ECU remembers 9-11, honors victims<lb />
President Bush and first lady Laura Bush participate<lb />
in a wreath laying ceremony commemorating the fifth<lb />
anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11 in Shanksville, Penn<lb />
ECU's Sept. 11 memorial ceremony was sponsored by Students for Defense of Democracies, a local chapter of the<lb />
Foundation for Defense of Democracies.<lb />
Memorial held outside<lb />
Mendenhall in<lb />
KIMBERI.Y BELLAMY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Two members of the founda-<lb />
tion for defense of democracies,<lb />
Chris Federici and Joel Carter,<lb />
organized a .9-11 memorial to pay<lb />
tribute to those who sacrificed<lb />
their lives in the tragedy.<lb />
The memorial was one of the<lb />
student's requirements in affiliation<lb />
with their recent trip to Israel and<lb />
their membership in the non-par-<lb />
tisan anti-terrorism organization.<lb />
The memorial took place in the<lb />
brickyard outside of Mendenhall<lb />
Student Center at 0 p.m. on<lb />
Monday, Sept. 11, tfOOfi.<lb />
Speakers for the event included<lb />
Lieutenant Colonel Dennis Mill-<lb />
sap, professor of aerospace stud-<lb />
ies for ECU's Air Force JROTC.<lb />
Major Kevin Smeltzer, opera-<lb />
tions bureau commander for the<lb />
Greenville Police Department<lb />
and Captain Wayne Harris of the<lb />
Greenville Fire Department.<lb />
Other attendees included Dr.<lb />
Marylyn Sheerer, Interim Vice<lb />
Chancellor for student life, Keri<lb />
Brockett, SGA secretary, troops<lb />
from the Army National Guard<lb />
students and faculty.<lb />
Local television media was<lb />
present for the event also such as<lb />
WITN-7,W'NCT-9andWCTI-i<lb />
Federici made the opening<lb />
remarks for the event and made it<lb />
clear that even though the event<lb />
happened five years ago, people<lb />
shouldn't become apathetic to the<lb />
threat of terrorism.<lb />
Lt. Col. Millsap addressed the<lb />
importance of the attacks by com-<lb />
paring it to the feeling Americans<lb />
experienced in 194 with the Pearl<lb />
Harbor attack.<lb />
Major Smeltzer said that he<lb />
was reluctant to agree to speak for<lb />
the event because he felt that he<lb />
wouldn't be a good representative<lb />
of how other police officers felt that<lb />
risked their lives that day.<lb />
Smeltzer also told a story<lb />
about him seeing a picture of a<lb />
police officer saving a woman and<lb />
child and knowing that the officer<lb />
was afraid because he had to go<lb />
back into the building by his face<lb />
that was (lushed white.<lb />
Captain Harris described how<lb />
the word hero is used so loosely<lb />
today and that to him everyone<lb />
that sacrificed their lives in the<lb />
attacks are heroes.<lb />
One thing that all the speakers<lb />
had in common is them bring-<lb />
ing up the fact that a majority<lb />
of Americans, including them,<lb />
remember exactly where they<lb />
were and what they were doing<lb />
when they heard about the attacks.<lb />
The memorial also included<lb />
about a five minute slide show of<lb />
pictures of the world trade center,<lb />
victims, firefighters, police officers<lb />
and others that was involved in<lb />
the attacks.<lb />
The speaker and Federici and<lb />
Carter stressed the fact that terror-<lb />
ism is still very much a threat today.<lb />
Carter concluded the event g<lb />
by saying that American must J<lb />
actively participate in fighting <lb />
against terrorism so that similar <lb />
events won't occur. &<lb />

Students dance the night away in hopes of preventing the spread of AIDS and teaching others about the risks.<lb />
AIDS education party<lb />

ADELINE TRENTO<lb />
STAFF WRITF.R<lb />
Most college students have the<lb />
mindset that they won't be affected<lb />
by AIDS. What they don't know is<lb />
that instances of AIDS are increas-<lb />
ing among college age students.<lb />
In the United States, half of<lb />
all people infected with HIV are<lb />
between the ages of 13 and !24.<lb />
This means that every hour, two<lb />
young Americans will contract<lb />
IIIV, according to amfar.org.<lb />
In response to this growing<lb />
problem, the Kmissaries, Alpha<lb />
Phi Alpha, Sigma Gamma Rho,<lb />
Phi Beta Sigma, NAACP, Sisters<lb />
and Campus Wellness sponsored<lb />
H.L.A.CK.O.U.T, an AIDS aware-<lb />
ness party. B.L.A.C.K.O.U.T<lb />
which stands for Blacks, Latinos,<lb />
Asians and Caucasians Keeping<lb />
Out the AIDS virus in our commu-<lb />
nity, was held last Friday, Sept. H,<lb />
in Mendenhall Student Center.<lb />
H.L.A.CK.O.U.T. was held to<lb />
educate students and make them<lb />
aware of the growing problem<lb />
young people are facing.<lb />
"IIIV has been nicknamed the<lb />
disease of young people said Jes-<lb />
sica Ledbetter, senior and member<lb />
of the Emissaries.<lb />
"The Emissaries, along with<lb />
various other organizations, have<lb />
collaborated on this project to<lb />
ensure that ECU students are not<lb />
only educated about HIV, but are<lb />
aware of the devastating effects it is<lb />
having on our local community<lb />
Educating students about the<lb />
virus and promoting safe sex were<lb />
the main goals of the party.<lb />
"Safety is our biggest concern<lb />
said Michael Coplin, senior and<lb />
secretary of Alpha Phi Alpha.<lb />
"We are not preaching absti-<lb />
nence, we are preaching safety and<lb />
ways to protect yourself<lb />
To promote safe sex, condoms<lb />
and safe sex kits were given out<lb />
throughout the night. Rapid IIIV<lb />
tests were also available at the<lb />
party. Students could receive an<lb />
IIIV test and have their results<lb />
back within SO minutes.<lb />
"One of the most important<lb />
activities at the party were the<lb />
HIV tests Coplin said.<lb />

Jarvis Lecture Series<lb />
presents Dr. Phyllis<lb />

BY LEE SCHWARZ<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The Jarvis Lecture Series<lb />
will host "Taking Back the Bible<lb />
on Oct. '1 at 7:30 p.m. in the<lb />
Willis Building. The lecture will<lb />
he held by internationally renowned<lb />
Bible scholar Dr. Phyllis Tribble.<lb />
Calvin Mercer of ECU's Religious<lb />
Studies Program is looking<lb />
f'o r wa r d to the lecture.<lb />
"Dr. Trible has been a<lb />
pioneer of provocative, scholarly<lb />
interpretation of the Bible. I<lb />
heard her lecture when I was<lb />
a young seminarian and have<lb />
followed her career through the<lb />
years. An excellent linguist,<lb />
she brings fresh insights to<lb />
old texts and does it very<lb />
capably said Mercer.<lb />
In explaining her position<lb />
of introducing feminist themes<lb />
in the Bible through non-literal<lb />
interpretation, Tribble says,<lb />
"The lecture explores the<lb />
nature and role of the Bible in<lb />
contemporary American, with<lb />
the aim of finding in it a<lb />
blessing. The need to wrestle with<lb />
this scripture stands over against<lb />
those who denounce it and<lb />
those who read it literally<lb />
Tribble points out that<lb />
.aome Bible stories are "texts<lb />
or terror Her 1973 essay<lb />
" D e p a t r i a r c h a 1 i z i n g in<lb />
Biblical Interpretation" explains<lb />
that her view is not radical<lb />

expressing one of the more<lb />
radical views of feminism, but<lb />

Parking: Free at the Willis Building<lb />
that much of the body of scripture in<lb />

the express intent of turning<lb />
the female gender into scape-<lb />

Generally one of the largest<lb />
debates in Biblical interpreta-<lb />
tion is the actual interpretation<lb />
of the Bible. The role of women<lb />
in the Bible is debatable just<lb />
as the interpretation of the<lb />
Bible is. It seems this topic<lb />
is in the eye of the beholder.<lb />

10. You will get free<lb />
juice and cookies.<lb />
9. You will weigh less - one<lb />
pint less when you leave<lb />
than when you came in.<lb />
8. It's easy and convenient<lb />
- it only takes about an hour.<lb />
7. It's something you can<lb />
spare - most people have<lb />
blood to spare yet, there is<lb />
still not enough to go around.<lb />
6. Nobody can ask you to do<lb />
any heavy lifting as long as<lb />
you have the bandage on. You<lb />
can wear it for as long as you<lb />
like. It's your badge of honor.<lb />
5. You will walk a little<lb />
taller afterwards - you will<lb />
feel good about yourself.<lb />
4. You will be helping to ensure<lb />
that blood is there when you or<lb />
someone close to you may need<lb />
it. Most people don't think they'll<lb />
ever need blood, but many do.<lb />
3. It's something you can do on<lb />
equal footing with the rich and<lb />
famous - blood is something<lb />
money can't buy. Only something<lb />
one person can give to another.<lb />
2. You will be someone's hero<lb />
- you may give a newborn,<lb />
a child, a mother, a father,<lb />
a brother or a sister another<lb />
chance at life. In fact, you<lb />
may help save up to three<lb />
lives with just one donation.<lb />

ECU Performing Arts Series<lb />
announces upcoming season<lb />
The S. Rudolph Alexander Per-<lb />
forming Arts Series, East Carolina<lb />
University's flagship professional<lb />
performance series, has opened<lb />
season ticket sales for the 2006-<lb />
2007 season.<lb />
For over four decades, the series<lb />
has brought major orchestras, the-<lb />
atrical productions, choirs, soloists<lb />
and dance companies to campus<lb />
to perform in Wright Auditorium.<lb />
In this season, six performances<lb />
will be preceded by informal dinner<lb />
discussions hosted by profes-<lb />
sors and regional celebrities, and<lb />
catered by Lopaus Point Market.<lb />
This year, the international prize-<lb />
winning pianist Alexander Kobrin,<lb />
winner of the Van Cliburn Gold<lb />
Medal, kicks off the season on<lb />
Sept. 27. The artist, who has<lb />
recorded Liszt and Chopin for<lb />
international labels, has appeared<lb />
in a film documentary about the<lb />
Cliburn Competition, which aired<lb />
on PBS stations nationally in 2005<lb />
and 2006.<lb />
Jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton, the<lb />
Jazz Week vocalist of the year,<lb />
brings her band to campus on Oct.<lb />
3. Sutton's voice is heard on com-<lb />
mercials representing BMW, Coca<lb />
Cola, Dodge, and J.C. Penney, as<lb />
well as on multiple<lb />
film scores and five acclaimed<lb />
CDs. The Wisconsin-born choir girl<lb />

City Hall showcases local art work<lb />
Citizens in City Hall for meetings,<lb />
paying bills or other business may<lb />
find the walls decked with art.<lb />
The City and Greenville Museum<lb />
of Art are utilizing the empty wall<lb />
space to showcase the work of<lb />
local artists.<lb />
"We talked about getting some art<lb />
for the Mayor's office said Mayor<lb />
Don Parrott, "then it evolved into<lb />
an arrangement with the Greenville<lb />
Museum of Art to supply art to the<lb />
whole building. I think it's a great<lb />
way to partner with and support<lb />
the local artistic community<lb />
Jennifer Hodges with the Greenville<lb />
Museum of Art said, "We're very<lb />
excited and happy. I think it's great<lb />
for everybody.<lb />
The city workers have something<lb />
pleasing on the wall to look at, and<lb />
the public gets to see this local art.<lb />
For the Museum - it gets us out<lb />
there and lets people know what<lb />
we do. And it's also good for the<lb />
artist - it's good exposure for their<lb />
works, they might sell something,<lb />
and it's another thing they can put<lb />
on their resume<lb />
The artwork will change every four<lb />
months, so the interior of City Hall<lb />
will get a fresh look three times a<lb />
year.<lb />
City staff has created a guide for<lb />
the pieces on display.<lb />
Included are names, the artist,<lb />
size, medium, and price if you're<lb />
interested in purchasing the work.<lb />
There are a few art guides avail-<lb />
able at the reception desk, or you<lb />
can visit the City's Web site at<lb />

DWI Checkpoints: Tools that get<lb />
drunk drivers off the roadways<lb />
Checkpoints conducted<lb />
at random, event-<lb />
specific dates<lb />
CHRISTOPHER STEVENSON<lb />
STAFF WRITKH<lb />
On Aug. 26, members of the<lb />
Greenville Police Department<lb />
along with several other law<lb />
enforcement agencies, including<lb />
the ECU Police Department, con-<lb />
ducted a Driving While Impaired<lb />
checkpoint<lb />
Held at the intersection of East<lb />
Fifth Street and Green Springs<lb />
Drive, the checkpoint started at 10<lb />
p.m. and concluded at 2:35 a.m.<lb />
The police at the check-<lb />
point tagged people with a vari-<lb />
ety of violations. The two most<lb />
common vehicle violations were<lb />
expired registrations and inspec-<lb />
tions, but the biggest violations at the<lb />
checkpoint were the 10 DWI arrests.<lb />
"The goal of the checkpoint is to<lb />
encourage individuals not to drink<lb />
and drive said Ralph Whitehurst,<lb />
administrative sergeant of<lb />
the ECU Police Department.<lb />
Whitehurst said by increasing<lb />
the chances of someone getting<lb />
caught driving after drinking, the<lb />
ECU Police Department hopes<lb />
these checkpoints will discourage<lb />
this highly unsafe act.<lb />
Police want everyone to pay<lb />
attention to the message that it's<lb />
not safe to drink and drive.<lb />
"If people haven't gotten<lb />
that message, the message of<lb />
the checkpoint is that you never<lb />
know when or where there may<lb />
be another said Major Kevin<lb />
Smeltzer of the Greenville Police<lb />
Department.<lb />
There will definitely be more<lb />
DWI checkpoints in the future. In<lb />
the Greenville area, both random<lb />
dates and event-specific dates are<lb />
chosen, including Halloween.<lb />
Whitehurst said a town or<lb />
neighborhood can also request a<lb />
checkpoint to be conducted in their<lb />
area to educe the number of viola-<lb />
tions and to increase the safety of<lb />
the roadways.<lb />
"Checkpoints are usually set up<lb />
at key roads leading in and out of<lb />
the Greenville downtown area for<lb />
obvious reasons Whitehurst said.<lb />
The DWI checkpoints<lb />
do not target ECU students spe-<lb />
cifically.<lb />
"Since the university is adjacent<lb />
to the downtown area, students as<lb />
well as non-students are likely<lb />
to encounter these checkpoints<lb />
Whitehurst said.<lb />
"It's been my observation in<lb />
the past 20 years that ECU gener-<lb />
ally has received this message and<lb />
you see them walking, riding the<lb />
bus or with a designated driver in<lb />
greater numbers than years ago<lb />
Smeltzer said<lb />
Many people get their first<lb />
taste of alcohol in college, which<lb />
can bring a nood of problems if<lb />
that person not responsible under<lb />
the influence. Whitehurst stressed<lb />
that students should not drink<lb />
while underage.<lb />
"Just about all sexual assaults<lb />
and physical assaults involve<lb />
alcohol in some way Whitehurst<lb />
said.<lb />
Students should use a des-<lb />
ignated driver if they decide to<lb />
drink. Transit buses and the Safe<lb />
Ride program offer alternatives<lb />
to driving.<lb />
"If an intoxicated person is<lb />
causing problems then they will<lb />
be refused a ride and police officers<lb />
w ill take appropriate enforcement<lb />
actions against the individual<lb />
Whitehurst said.<lb />
When a student drinks<lb />
to the point of intoxication, they<lb />
endanger themselves and other<lb />
people.<lb />
Whitehurst said, at this point,<lb />
the student is more likely to<lb />
commit acts of vandalism, and if<lb />
he or she drives a car, could kill an<lb />
innocent bystander.<lb />
If a student is found c<lb />
to be overly intoxicated, they will t<lb />
be transported to the hospital, at -c<lb />
the cost of approximately $700. i3<lb />
Students can go to transit. <lb />

Enjoy playing computer games? Perhaps you should relocate to Santa Cruz, California where they are teaching students to design video games.<lb />
Santa Cruz University launches computer-gaming major<lb />
(MCT) New at the Uni-<lb />
versity of California-Santa Cruz:<lb />
Not only can students spend gobs<lb />
of time on computer games, they<lb />
can major in them, too.<lb />
The school, known for its laid<lb />
back, frisbeeplaying ambience,<lb />
is quite serious about its new<lb />
major in computer game design,<lb />
the first in the University of Cali-<lb />
fornia system.<lb />
Administrators said in July<lb />
that the interdisciplinary pro-<lb />
gram, coordinated by the Com-<lb />
puter Science department, will<lb />
prepare students for high-tech<lb />
jobs by exposing them to both the<lb />
technical and the artistic virtues<lb />
of game design.<lb />
As might be expected, stu-<lb />
dents like the new program.<lb />
"The major is a great idea,<lb />
and it's probably going to get tons<lb />
and tons of new students to come<lb />
to Santa Cruz said sophomore<lb />
Chris Carlsson, who is majoring<lb />
in economics but is extremely<lb />
well acquainted with computer<lb />
games.<lb />
The capstone of the major will<lb />
be a yearlong project for seniors.<lb />
Student teams will develop a<lb />
video game from start to finish.<lb />
Pohl said the new program<lb />
will capitalize on the school's<lb />
proximity to Silicon Valley and<lb />
the opportunities available in<lb />
the multi-billion video game<lb />
industry.<lb />
"The Santa Cruz culture all<lb />
along has been a culture of experi-<lb />
mentation and interdisciplinary<lb />
work said Ira Pohl, chair of the<lb />
Computer Science department.<lb />
Without knowing all of the<lb />
details, computer game industry<lb />
analysts said it is tough to assess<lb />
the program's quality or judge<lb />
how desirable its graduates might<lb />
be for employers.<lb />
Students who think they want<lb />
to "study" video games should<lb />
think carefully before they pursue<lb />
that path, an industry veteran<lb />
advised.<lb />
"People think playing games<lb />
is easy so designing them<lb />
must be fun But, like anything<lb />
else, it's hard work. And it<lb />
requires a lot of effort said Erie<lb />
Goldberg, a '2H-year veteran of<lb />
the computer game industry and<lb />
managing director of Crossover<lb />
Technologies. Still, he said, "I'd<lb />
love to see people get the formal<lb />
training that was not available<lb />
to me<lb />
Several schools have launched<lb />
game design departments during<lb />
the past decade, including the<lb />
University of Southern Califor-<lb />
nia, Southern Methodist Univer-<lb />
sity and Carnegie Mellon.<lb />
Santa Cruz professors spoke<lb />
with game designers at Electronic<lb />
Arts and Microsoft to get a feel<lb />
for their needs.<lb />
The new major will<lb />
require students to understand<lb />
how to program games, not just<lb />
how to make the graphics. "They<lb />
won't be an art student retrained<lb />
to do a little programming Pohl<lb />
said.<lb />
(MCT) Watch old movies.<lb />
Scan vintage fashion magazines.<lb />
You get the message: College stu-<lb />
dents tended to dress very much<lb />
alike in the old days.<lb />
Sweaters and pearls starred<lb />
in one era. Blazers and preppy<lb />
khakis ruled in another. Plaid<lb />
grunge once dominated. But<lb />
times change.<lb />
Today's young scholars are<lb />
more creative. They may have<lb />
many of the same items as their<lb />
dorm roommates. They have the<lb />
skinny dark blue jeans, the mes-<lb />
sage T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts<lb />
and puffy vests.<lb />
But do they want to look the same<lb />
as their roommates? Probably not.<lb />
They prefer to set themselves<lb />
apart with a little tweak. Making<lb />
a statement is a priority. They'll<lb />
mix unlikely layers and relish<lb />
juxtapositions even when they<lb />
draw raised eyebrows.<lb />
"A guy will wear a hooded<lb />
sweatshirt and a puffy parka with<lb />
shorts and thongs. They love<lb />
o thongs. They wear them with<lb />
everything. But it should look as<lb />
if it was picked up off the dorm<lb />
room floor<lb />
Marshal Cohen, senior fashion<lb />
analyst for NPU, which tracks<lb />
shopping trends, says students may<lb />
buy a new pair of jeans but because<lb />
they start out with summer clothes,<lb />
they usually wait until later in the<lb />
fall for serious shopping.<lb />
"They don't want to show<lb />
up with stuff that was cool in<lb />
Wisconsin but not in Chapel Hill,<lb />
N.C Cohen says.<lb />
At the same time, students<lb />
are devoting money to furnish-<lb />
ing dorm rooms and apartments.<lb />

BLACKOUT<lb />
continued from Al<lb />
"One out of four people with<lb />
AIDS don't know they have it<lb />
For the event, Mendenhall was<lb />
decorated with signs that showed<lb />
statistics about HIV and AIDS.<lb />
Pamphlets and information on<lb />
the causes and symptoms of AIDS<lb />
were passed out throughout the<lb />
night to educate students. Party-<lb />
goers received pamphlets on the<lb />
correct way to use condoms, and<lb />
they also received information<lb />
that corrected many myths about<lb />
HIV and AIDS.<lb />
The sponsors of<lb />
BLACKOUT held the event to<lb />
help students become aware of the<lb />
problem and talk about the virus.<lb />
"AIDS is a silent killer that<lb />
has no face, friends or boundar-<lb />
ies Ledbetter said.<lb />
"It is ravaging entire commu-<lb />
nities because no one is willing to<lb />
talk about it<lb />
Although there are many AIDS<lb />
awareness activities on campus, the<lb />
goal of B.L.A.C.K.O.UT. was to<lb />
bring everyone together for one<lb />
unified event. At one a.m the<lb />
party was blacked out in a tribute<lb />
to all those who are living with or<lb />
have died from Al DS. The blackout<lb />
began at one a.m. and lasted four<lb />
minutes, representing that one in<lb />
four people infected with AIDS do<lb />
not know they have it. Students<lb />
were given glow sticks which they<lb />
held up in unison to demonstrate<lb />
their combined effort in ending the<lb />
spread of HIV and AIDS.<lb />
More than 350 people attended<lb />
the party and the event raised<lb />
$920. All of the proceeds were<lb />
donated to Picaso, Pitt County's<lb />
AIDS service organization.<lb />
Picaso is a local organization<lb />
that provides services to those<lb />
infected with AIDS in Pitt County<lb />
and surrounding areas. They offer<lb />
financial services, housing assis-<lb />
tance, transportation and support<lb />
to those infected with the virus.<lb />
Picaso also provides educational<lb />
programs to churches, schools and<lb />
youth groups to help stop the spread<lb />
of AIDS in the Greenville area,<lb />
according to picaso.org.<lb />
"This is only the beginning<lb />

Not just for Pirate Rants <lb />
Brody Ruckus:<lb />
Hero or total<lb />
lunatic?<lb />
Either way, you have to give the<lb />
man credit for a good idea<lb />
RACHEL KING<lb />
NEWS EDITOR<lb />
On Sept. 8, at approximately 9 p.m I<lb />
joined a movement. I did not know it then,<lb />
but I certainly do now. With all the contro-<lb />
versy swirling around recent changes to the<lb />
online networking site Facebook, It is only<lb />
fair that I point out another major change<lb />
in the system: A brand new group called, if<lb />
this group reaches 100,000, my girlfriend<lb />
will nave a threesome The founder of the<lb />
group and leader of the exponentially grow-<lb />
ing affair? A man named Brody Ruckus,<lb />
from Atlanta, Ga.<lb />
The group was created on Sept. 5 at about<lb />
3 p.m. By 7 p.m it had about 200 members.<lb />
By Sept. 7, there were 7,000. At 1 a.m. on<lb />
Sept. 8, there were 50,000 of us pulling for<lb />
Ruckus' threesome with his girlfriend. Holly<lb />
and a third, yet unknown member. Only<lb />
12 short hours later, the group had gained<lb />
another amazing 30,000 people to bring the<lb />
total up to 83,300 members. Keep in mind<lb />
that the group had only existed since Tues-<lb />
day afternoon. At 4:05 p.m. Friday after-<lb />
noon, the group hit its goal of 100,000.<lb />
I call it a movement Because of the expo-<lb />
nential rate of growth of the group and the<lb />
attention it has already gleaned. Idare say<lb />
you have probably heard of the group or have<lb />
joined by now yourselves, since practically<lb />
everyone on my friend list has, too. I find it<lb />
amazing mind-boggling, even, that a single<lb />
man - a regular person-can hatch an idea<lb />
so ridiculously effective that in the space<lb />
of four or so days, he's already met his goal<lb />
and then some.<lb />
The back-story? Basically, Ruckus and<lb />
his girlfriend had been sitting around talk-<lb />
ing about the largest group on Facebook (it<lb />
boasts over 800,000 members) and made a<lb />
friendly bet that Ruckus couldn't come up<lb />
with something that would gain that kind<lb />
of attention. One of those, "It can't be done<lb />
kind of exchanges. He affirmed that with<lb />
the right idea, not only could it be done, it<lb />
could De done in epic proportions. And so<lb />
it began.<lb />
Supporters of Ruckus and his carnal<lb />
dreams have already made everything from<lb />
posters to t-shirts to journals emblazoned<lb />
with his name and his cause. After all, as<lb />
Ruckus says, what hot-blooded college boy<lb />
isn't looking to indulge in a "naked sand-<lb />
wich?" Links provided on the group details<lb />
page allow members to purchase a button or<lb />
sticker proclaiming their support.<lb />
"I helped Brody Ruckus reach 100,000<lb />
some say. Girls' shirts include phrases such<lb />
as "Pick me for the threesome, Brody<lb />
VHl has even been contacted in hopes of<lb />
featuring Ruckus on an episode of "Best<lb />
Week Ever Hey, it could happen.<lb />
However, with the immense and immedi-<lb />
ate success of this group, the deal between<lb />
Ruckus and his girlfriend morphed into<lb />
something even more outrageous. Sup-<lb />
posedly, if the group can reach 300,000,<lb />
Ruckus will be allowed to take pictures. If it<lb />
becomes the largest group on Facebook (who<lb />
knows?), he win be allowed to film it.<lb />
As of Sunday around noon, the member-<lb />
ship tally grows upwards of over 180,000. By<lb />
the way, in the original bet, Ruckus techni-<lb />
cally has until Dec. 31 to reach his new goal<lb />
of largest group ever. Not a bad start, one<lb />
must admit.<lb />
In one final change of events, Ruckus and<lb />
his girlfriend agreed to allow group mem-<lb />
bers to vote on the third member from girls<lb />
on Facebook that have actually requested<lb />
to be involved. Voting time has not been<lb />
announced yet, but they won't see my vote.<lb />
Enough is enough ana it's starting to go<lb />
a little too far for me, but isn't it amazing<lb />
to see what can happen with the right idea<lb />
in the right medium directed at the right<lb />
audience? Although I have my own personal<lb />
feelings about threesomes and don't agree<lb />
with everything the group promotes and<lb />
represents, I joined because it was funny and<lb />
I was amazed. Now I'm glad I did. It makes<lb />
for an interesting story and I wouldn't be<lb />
surprised to see it on national news. Check<lb />
it out for yourself.<lb />

Convenience takes a backseat to bus schedule<lb />
STACY DAIL<lb />
OPINION WRITER<lb />
So, here 1 im, standing outside of Joyner library,<lb />
at 8:15 p.m in the rain. Doesn't sound like such a<lb />
bad situation, but throw in 15 pounds of books and<lb />
the fact that I just missed the bus that only comes<lb />
every 30 minutes, the bus that will separate me from<lb />
this rainy wet misery, and my dry little car, and the<lb />
situation sounds a bit worse.<lb />
If you haven't guessed already, I am one of the<lb />
many commuter students at ECU that get the privi-<lb />
lege of taking the ECU bus every single day during<lb />
the week. Don't get me wrong, the school and their<lb />
bus system is great during the day, but at night is<lb />
where my problem begins.<lb />
The Minges Park and Ride bus runs from 6:50<lb />
a.m. to 6:50 p.m picking up and dropping off<lb />
students every five to 10 minutes. Being a transfer<lb />
student from NC. State, I applaud ECU on their bus<lb />
system. During the day, it's easy to catch a bus just<lb />
about any where you want to go, and for those of us<lb />
going to Minges in a hurry to get to work or run an<lb />
errand, the bus is quick, easy and efficient.<lb />
Then, seven o'clock rolls around and the Minges.<lb />
Park and Ride buses go home. Unfortunately, there<lb />
are still many commuter students who would love to<lb />
get to their car with such quickness and efficiency<lb />
that 1 was just complimenting ECU's bus system on.<lb />
Instead these students have to wait for The Pirate<lb />
Ride bus, which comes every 80 minutes, if you're<lb />
lucky. At Joyner library, the bus is scheduled to come<lb />
15 after the hour and 15 until the hour.<lb />
When I was so gracefully running to catch the<lb />
bus that left me, it was about 8:10, and when I finally<lb />
got on the bus, my books and I quite wet, it was 8:53.<lb />
Sure this is only a 13 minute difference from the 30<lb />
minute schedule, but in.my opinion, the bus coming<lb />
every 30 minutes is ridiculous.<lb />
There are a lot of students who take night classes,<lb />
and when we get out of class, regardless of the<lb />
time, we are ready to get to our cars and get home<lb />
or wherever else we have to be. Waiting 20, 30 or<lb />
even 40 minutes isn't logical, given all the buses that<lb />
ECU has, and factoring in the amount that students<lb />
pay for tuition.<lb />
Yes, I understand that the reason ECU does this<lb />
is because not as many students need the bus at night,<lb />
but it would be nice for them to consider those of<lb />
us who do, and don't enjoy waiting half an hour or<lb />
longer for the bus to arrive.<lb />
A lot of those living off campus have bills to<lb />
pay, and when getting out of class at night some<lb />
are going to work, or need to get home to do school<lb />
work before starting a new busy day of more school<lb />
and more work. Time is a very important thing in<lb />
a college student's life, and waiting for the bus for a<lb />
long time is just a waste of it.<lb />
I admit that the bus schedule probably isn't the<lb />
biggest problem that ECU has right now, but I think it<lb />
is important and should be improved. Scheduling the<lb />
buses to come every 10 minutes would be OK, that way<lb />
a five or so minute delay wouldn't be that big of a deal.<lb />
I know that I, and probably all the other com-<lb />
muter students, would love to know that no matter<lb />
what time they get out of class, going home and get-<lb />
ting on with their life is no longer 30 minutes away,<lb />
but an easy and quick five to 10 minutes.<lb />
PIRATE RANTS<lb />
How do you fumble on the one yard line?!<lb />
There is someone I know who is scrumptious.<lb />
To all, and I mean all, you girls wearing low-<lb />
cut shirts that expose heaving cleavage and<lb />
shorts and miniskirts that barely cover your<lb />
posterior: Why, oh why, do you torture me so?<lb />
Any sorority that says they don't haze, they<lb />
are lying! Trust me, I live with two different<lb />
sorority girls. Why would you want to part<lb />
of an organization that makes you drink<lb />
or do humiliating things for a good laugh?<lb />
Is it bad that I like Hannah Montana<lb />
on the Disney Channel and I am 23?<lb />
I hate the new nursing school building.<lb />
There are no places to sit outside, one<lb />
place to eat and no visitor parking. It was<lb />
not made for students; it was made to "have<lb />
the best technology Too bad it doesn't<lb />
work and the lights go off during class !<lb />
I don't think sports deserves its own<lb />
section in the newspaper any more than<lb />
say, a knitting section or a video game<lb />
section, let alone it's own half of TEC.<lb />
To the guy wondering where all the single<lb />
good girls are: We're out here wondering<lb />
where the single good guys are! Seriously,<lb />
if all you're meeting is trashy girls, maybe<lb />
you're looking in the wrong places!<lb />
Why are ECU employees allowed to<lb />
smoke cigarettes in state owned vehicles?<lb />
I barely noticed that they painted two<lb />
white lines across 14th Street between<lb />
Berkley Road and College Hill Drive. Is that<lb />
supposed to be a pedestrian crosswalk?<lb />
Can they put some signs up or paint the<lb />
road so it's more evident? And sorry to<lb />
the student that I about hit the other day.<lb />
All this policy crap is really hindering<lb />
me from getting my game on.<lb />
To the person who walked by the<lb />
bus stop Friday morning covered in<lb />
permanent marker: I just want to thank<lb />
you for making me realize my day<lb />
could be a lot worse than a hangover.<lb />
I hate geography especially at 8 a.m even<lb />
more when my professor can't speak English.<lb />
I'm from Bermuda! A Hurricane is about to<lb />
hit does anyone care? It's not on the news<lb />
or do Americans only care about Americans?<lb />
I love America but that's pathetic!<lb />
Be good to everyone. To each the other true.<lb />
A lot of things don't bother me, but<lb />
one thing that does bother me? When<lb />
I'm walking to class and someone is<lb />
walking and text messaging on their cell<lb />
phone at the same time. For some reason<lb />
people feel the need to walk slowly like<lb />
a granny with a walker, rather than just<lb />
sitting down somewhere to take care of<lb />
that important text message. It's not that<lb />
hard to just get out of people's way to<lb />
play with your cell phone, I mean really.<lb />
Nineteen days, and it's still cold in Fleming.<lb />
I miss the opinion articles from last<lb />
year. Especially the conservative<lb />
corner, even if that's because it<lb />
made me so angry it was just funny.<lb />
I think I'm in love with you, but I don't want to<lb />
get my heart broken. And I don't want to lose<lb />
everything that we have. Have I mentioned<lb />
you're basically my best friend? No, really.<lb />
How the hell am I 21 years old and<lb />
still slightly afraid of the dark and<lb />
unable to sleep in a house by myself?<lb />
To the girl that I see everyday in the<lb />
gym: I wish that I could get the courage<lb />
to give you a hug. Sweetheart, you are<lb />
too thin. I don't know what makes you<lb />
think that you still need to keep running,<lb />
but I promise you don't need it, and I<lb />
hope that someone else notices soon.<lb />
I bet you eight out of 10 people who<lb />
eat fast food regularly are considered<lb />
obese. I seriously see so many overweight<lb />
people going through the McDonalds<lb />
drive-thru on my way to work every day.<lb />
Why do so many girls ignore everyone else<lb />
like they don't exist? When you walk by and<lb />
give them a cheerful wave or smile to be<lb />
friendly, they keep walking as if they didn't<lb />
see it. Why don't people at least nod, say<lb />
hi, or at least loosen up? Half of everyone<lb />
I meet is all tensed up. It's just college.<lb />
Slim and Shady Mornings Rock my socks<lb />
every Tuesday and Thursday on WZMB!<lb />
I'm bringing sexy back<lb />
To the two people who sit next to me in<lb />
English: If you feel the need to pass notes<lb />
back and forth go back to high school!<lb />
It is disrespectful to your classmates<lb />
who you distract, and the teacher. If<lb />
you already know everything, maybe you<lb />
shouldn't have signed up for the class.<lb />
I hate to bring up the issue of smoking,<lb />
but this is getting ridiculous. Every time I<lb />
walk anywhere on campus, it seems like<lb />
everyone is smoking It is effecting those of<lb />
us who like to keep our lungs and not want<lb />
to breathe out of a hole in our necks. I think<lb />
ECU should be a non-smoking campus and<lb />
follow in the footsteps of PCMH. If you're<lb />
going to smoke, may I suggest you not<lb />
walk in front of other people while doing it<lb />
and then breathing it out onto us. There is<lb />
nothing more disgusting than seeing smoke<lb />
come out of your mouths and into my hair.<lb />
To the guys from North Campus Crossing<lb />
that "threatened" my friends and myself'<lb />
while we were waiting for the Pirate<lb />
Express the other night downtown.<lb />
That was a classless act. How did you<lb />
pinheads get into ECU? If you can't<lb />
control yourself then don't go downtown.<lb />
To the guys who think skateboarding all<lb />
around Pirate's Cove at two in the morning<lb />
is apparently the best thing ever, there are<lb />
not enough words in the English language to<lb />
describe how much I loathe you. Just when<lb />
I'm about to fall asleep, every night, there's<lb />
the sound of your skateboards. I'm outraged.<lb />
I hate classes where my classmates act like<lb />
they are the professor and give people the<lb />
third degree when the miss a class. Get a life!<lb />
We always have next weekend<lb />
Pirates. I know you can do it!<lb />
I hate that I'm doing this to<lb />
you. I hate that you hate me for it.<lb />

The last-minute<lb />
way to get tickets to<lb />
performances<lb />
LIZ FULTON<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Every so often, it is necessary<lb />
to tear yourself away from the<lb />
ordinary and spend an evening<lb />
being enlightened by the beauty<lb />
of the performing arts.<lb />
For the structured and<lb />
forward thinking, ECU's College<lb />
of Fine Arts and Communica-<lb />
tion has created a way to buy<lb />
advance tickets for the S.<lb />
Rudolph Performing Arts Series<lb />
held annually on central campus<lb />
at Wright Auditorium.<lb />
Every year, SRAPAS brings<lb />
acclaimed musicians, singers,<lb />
plays and ballets to our campus<lb />
at amazing costs to students<lb />
and visitors alike. Of the nine<lb />
performances scheduled for the<lb />
2006 - 2007 season, there is an<lb />
option of purchasing tickets for<lb />
four events for only $0. Besides<lb />
the fact that the series takes about<lb />
half a million dollars to operate,<lb />
the accolades and awards these<lb />
performers have won is luck<lb />
in itself to only see them for<lb />
$10 a show.<lb />
With the purchase of advance<lb />
tickets, it is also possible to choose<lb />
your seats and know that you<lb />
will be attending some of the<lb />
most highly cultured events<lb />
in Greenville.<lb />
If you are not so lucky to<lb />
plan out your calendar weeks in<lb />
advance but still want to attend<lb />
a SRAPAS event, it is now easier<lb />
than ever with the program's rush<lb />
ticket option.<lb />
For only $5, you can attend<lb />
a performance without reserv-<lb />
ing a ticket. The only setback is<lb />
that your seat will be determined<lb />
by whatever is available and<lb />
you must show up half an hour<lb />
prior to the show's opening. All<lb />
shows are held at Wright Audi-<lb />
torium and you must bring your<lb />
student ID.<lb />
"The performers in the season<lb />
are so talented, and it's a really<lb />
great opportunity to see some of<lb />
them on the ground floor said<lb />
Michael Crane of the College of<lb />
Fine Arts.<lb />
"They're not only 'edu-tain-<lb />

The vaccination, developed by Merck is available at the ECU Student<lb />
Health Center in a three dose course that is available to any student.<lb />
Human Papillomavirus<lb />
and the new vaccine<lb />
SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
ASSISTANT FEATURES EDITOR<lb />
Unless you've been hiding<lb />
under a rock for the past six<lb />
months, it is unlikely that you've<lb />
managed to escape the numerous<lb />
Commercial! that air frequently<lb />
on major television networks.<lb />
Merck's ad campaign, "Tell Some-<lb />
one encourages people to spread<lb />
the word about the Human Pap-<lb />
illomavirus, which can lead to<lb />
cervical cancer. Therefore, I've<lb />
decided to spread the word to you.<lb />
Let's start oft with the basics.<lb />
For those of your who don't<lb />
already know, you are probably<lb />
wondering what flPV is. Genital<lb />
warts and cervical cancer are the<lb />
two most common problems that<lb />
are associated with HPV, which<lb />
is most often transmitted from<lb />
person to person through sex.<lb />
I II'V is also the most common<lb />
sexually transmitted disease in<lb />
the US, with about 50 percent of<lb />
sexually active people contracting<lb />
Hl'V at some time throughout<lb />
their life Every year around 0.8<lb />
million Americans contract Hl'V.<lb />
The virus is most prominent in<lb />
women and men in their late teens<lb />
and early -20s.<lb />
There are over !()() varieties<lb />
of Hl'V; however, not all form<lb />
of Hl'V lead to cervical cancer or<lb />
genital warts Some people can live<lb />
for months or even years after they<lb />
are infected with the disease before<lb />
they experience any symptoms.<lb />
After reading about this dis-<lb />
ease you may begin to worry<lb />
about your own health. Hl'V is not<lb />
included in a regular STI) test;<lb />
therefore, women must have a pap<lb />
Mm ar to determine whether they<lb />
have abnormal cells in the cervix.<lb />
Since Hl'V is a virus, it will<lb />
remain with you throughout your<lb />
lifetime. However the problems<lb />
that stem from it can be treated.<lb />
Most visible genital warts should<lb />
disappear with time, but if you<lb />
suffer from a more severe case,<lb />
you may need to visit a doctor for<lb />
surgery or medication.<lb />
Cervical cancer can also be<lb />
treated with traditional cancer<lb />
treatments, which include, but are<lb />
not limited to, surgery, radiation<lb />
therapy and chemotherapy.<lb />
Once you are certain that<lb />
you are HI'V-free, you can seek<lb />
a preventative measure for the<lb />
virus in the form of the vaccine,<lb />
Gardasil.<lb />
The vaccine protects against<lb />
the most invasive types of Hl'V<lb />
which include strains 6, 11, 16<lb />
and IK. However, it does not cure<lb />
those already diagnosed with the<lb />
virus.<lb />
Student Health Services offers<lb />
Gardasil to students for $130<lb />
per dose, totaling (590 for the<lb />
full series. For more information<lb />
about the vaccine, please visit the<lb />
Center of Disease Control and<lb />
Prevention's Web site at cdc.gov<lb />
Another preventative measure<lb />
against HPV is using barrier pro-<lb />
tection during Sexual intercourse,<lb />
whether it is through the use of<lb />
a condom or a diaphragm Also,<lb />
limiting the number of sexual<lb />
partners greatly lowers your risk<lb />
of contracting the virus<lb />
The bottom line as with any<lb />
STU is to make sure that you<lb />
understand the disease and that<lb />
you get checked regularly if you<lb />
are sexually active The key to<lb />
treating this disease is catching it<lb />
in early stages before it has time to<lb />
wreck havoc on your body.<lb />
In order to learn more<lb />
about HPV, vilit hpvtest.com<lb />

the virus as well as answers<lb />

60s Rock - When the music mattered<lb />
Barry Drake to drop<lb />
some hippy knowledge<lb />
on ECU<lb />
ZACH STEPHENSON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The 1960s were overrated.<lb />
If there was a revolution, where<lb />
did it go? Everyone involved in<lb />
the four-year "decade seem-<lb />
ingly copped out once Hell's<lb />
Angels paraded Altamont and<lb />
Charlie Manson painted the<lb />
walls with "Helter Skelter<lb />
What's left besides a few<lb />
embarrassing names and<lb />

ramble about the "good old<lb />
days after a seventh egg nog?<lb />
All the real entities from<lb />
that era have either OD'd or<lb />
are still living in their parents'<lb />
basements. It would be nice to<lb />
see Brian Wilson get some much<lb />
needed dough from the 40th<lb />
anniversary release of Ptt Sounds,<lb />
but we all know that will never<lb />
happen. Syd Barrett passed this<lb />
year, along with all hope of a<lb />
reptilian Pink Floyd reunion.<lb />
In essence, the 1960s were a<lb />
period when rock n' roll hit its<lb />
pinnacle by embracing its African<lb />
American heritage. There were a<lb />
few savants who pushed beyond<lb />
the constraints of the blues, but<lb />
they are the ones said farewell<lb />
to their instruments long ago.<lb />
It's sweet to see a revived<lb />
interest in bands like Captain<lb />
Beefhart and the 13th Floor<lb />
Elevators, but hearing "You're<lb />
Gonna Miss Me" blaring from the<lb />
backdrop of a Dell commercial is<lb />
like watching your idol's death<lb />
rattle from a too real perspective.<lb />
Dylan and Hendrix are<lb />
untouchable from any stance.<lb />
So were The Yardbirds, but as<lb />
our generation's Dylan, Anton<lb />

"Well I'll bet you money that<lb />

The 1960s had such impact<lb />
because they were the years that<lb />
people began to see music as<lb />
a soundtrack of the times. But<lb />
this admiration escalated into<lb />
egotistic stars that cared less<lb />
about their message than the<lb />
recognition, which locked the<lb />
gates of credibility with a key<lb />
ofexcess.<lb />
Despite my cynical ram-<lb />

Skip Holtz, ECU Head Coach<lb />
"My eighth grade football coach<lb />
texted me a message over this<lb />
weekend that I got Saturday<lb />
night. It talked about being<lb />
'disappointed' as a part of life,<lb />
but 'discouragement' is a choice.<lb />
Right now, UAB was a disap-<lb />
pointing loss, but the one thing<lb />
we're not going to do is get<lb />
discouraged. We're not going to<lb />
turn on each other and fall apart<lb />
from within<lb />

Pirates fall to Blazers<lb />
in dramatic fashion<lb />
UAB wide receiver Steven Brown, Watson Brown's son, runs away from ECU safety Kyle Chase on the sideline in the first quarter.<lb />
Late fumble secures<lb />
win for UAB<lb />
BY RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
ECU wide receiver Phillip<lb />
Henry turned in the best game of<lb />
his career Saturday night at UAB,<lb />
but it won't be remembered for the<lb />
junior's 138-yard receiving perfor-<lb />
mance, it will be remembered for<lb />
the five yards Henry didn't get.<lb />
On a 4th-and-15 from midfield<lb />
with just over a minute remaining<lb />
and the Pirates trailing by five,<lb />
James Pinkney uncorked a perfect<lb />
pass to Henry. Pinkney lobbed the<lb />
ball over the hands of a leaping<lb />
defender and hit Henry in stride.<lb />
It appeared Henry was going in<lb />
for the winning score when the<lb />
unthinkable happened. UAB safety<lb />
Chris Felder caught up to Henry<lb />
and punched the ball out from<lb />
behind inside the five-yard line.<lb />
The Blazers recovered the fumble<lb />
in the end zone for a touchback and<lb />
held on for a 17-12 win.<lb />
The play epitomized what has<lb />
been a rollercoaster start for the<lb />
Pirates, who fell to 0-2 on the<lb />
young season.<lb />
"It hurts said ECU Head<lb />
Coach Skip Holtz. "We had plenty of<lb />
opportunities, but what really hurts<lb />
about it is that as poorly as we played<lb />
on offense, we still had our oppor-<lb />
tunities. And then there was that<lb />
flash of seconds there at the end<lb />
While Henry is the easy scape-<lb />
goat, in no way is Holtz, or the<lb />
team, putting the blame on him.<lb />
"Phillip Henry didn't lose this<lb />
football game Holtz said. "I made<lb />
the comment to the team at our<lb />
team meeting; he had an oppor-<lb />
UAB<lb />
17<lb />
ECU<lb />
12<lb />
tunity to win it. He made a great<lb />
catch. He could have dropped the<lb />
ball, too. He made a great catch in<lb />
the open field. A guy jumped up<lb />
as a distraction, he caught the ball<lb />
in his hands up over his head and<lb />
kinda spun around and took off for<lb />
the end zone. He had an opportu-<lb />
nity to win it, but he didn't lose it.<lb />
There were a whole lot of other<lb />
opportunities that we had<lb />
Those "other opportunities"<lb />
the Pirates had were similar to the<lb />
same chances they got at Navy a<lb />
week earlier. ECU recovered a pair<lb />
of UAB fumbles, but was unable to<lb />
convert either into points.<lb />
The Pirates had the ball inside the<lb />
UAB 10-yard line three times, but only<lb />
got one touchdown while settling a<lb />
pair of 22-yard Robert Lee field goals<lb />
on the other two possessions.<lb />
Henry's offensive punch and the<lb />
emergence of redshirt sophomore<lb />
tight end Davon Drew, who caught<lb />
his first career touchdown pass, made<lb />
up for a lackluster day for standout<lb />
receiver Aundrae Allison.<lb />
The talented wideout, who was<lb />
placed on the watch list for the Bilet-<lb />
nikoff Award last week, was shut out<lb />
for the first time in his ECU career.<lb />
The Pirates tried three fade routes<lb />
to him near the end zone and threw<lb />
to him six times during the game,<lb />
but Allison was unable to come up<lb />
with a catch.<lb />
OPINION<lb />
Henrys<lb />
fumble adds<lb />
to laundry<lb />
list of<lb />
late game<lb />
blunders<lb />
Reaction must be<lb />
positive for fragile team<lb />
ERIC GILMORE<lb />
SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
Two more yards and Phillip<lb />
Henry is a hero. Instead, the ECU<lb />
wide receiver becomes another<lb />
name in ECU football folklore.<lb />
Whether it was a severe case<lb />
of bad luck or the Alabama curse,<lb />
ECU couldn't catch a late game<lb />
break.<lb />
As seems to be standard from<lb />
the purple and gold, it was a case<lb />
of almost, but not quite enough.<lb />
Henry's late fumble at UAB imme-<lb />
diately reminded Pirate fans of<lb />
that dreadful Oct. 6 day in 2001<lb />
when then - KCU running back<lb />
Art Brown was primed to score<lb />
on a UNC kickoff in Chapel<lb />
Hill. Instead regaining the lead,<lb />
Madison Hedgecock jarred the<lb />
ball loose as Brown was entering<lb />
the endzone. Touchdown erased,<lb />
harmless touchback recorded.<lb />
ECU didn't score again and lost<lb />
the game 24-21.<lb />
It's the same script. Through-<lb />
out ECU's football history, huge<lb />
upsets are negated by question-<lb />
able calls and late fumbles. The<lb />
Pirates come close, but one play at<lb />
the exact wrong time constantly<lb />
prevents them from prevailing.<lb />
How about the 1983 team<lb />
that lost by a combined 13 points<lb />
. to Florida State, Florida and<lb />
: Miami? Then, ECU Head Coach<lb />
Ed Emory had a squad poised to<lb />
upset national power Florida State<lb />
when quarterback Kevin Ingram<lb />
fumbled in the late minutes at the<lb />
FSU 30, well within Jeff Heath's,<lb />
field goal range. During that<lb />
same year, Norwood Vann and<lb />
Stefon Adams collided in the end<lb />
zone to negate a sure touchdown<lb />
catch that would have prevented<lb />
Miami from winning the national<lb />
championship.<lb />
ECU's most infuriating loss<lb />
was to Southern Miss in 1986.<lb />
After ECU scored, the Golden<lb />
Eagles had a few seconds left for<lb />
a Hail Mary. During the ensuing<lb />
play, a Southern Miss receiver<lb />
illegally lateralled the ball for-<lb />
ward to another Southern Miss<lb />
player, who went in the end zone<lb />
to score. ECU Head Coach Art<lb />
Baker had a choice of declining the<lb />
penalty, which would have given<lb />
Southern Miss a touchdown or<lb />
enforce it at the spot of the foul.<lb />
Baker chose the ladder, which<lb />
set up a go-ahead Golden Eagles<lb />
field goal to defeat ECU 23-21.<lb />
The NCAA later changed the<lb />
rule that an offensive team cannot<lb />
benefit from a penalty at the end<lb />
of the game.<lb />
In ECU's only loss during<lb />
the 1991 season, the Pirates were<lb />
flagged for a questionable exces-<lb />
sive celebration penalty at Illinois<lb />
in front of a national television<lb />
audience. Granted, the Jeff Blake<lb />
led squad made several memo-<lb />
rable plays late in games, hut the<lb />
Illinois loss prevented ECU from<lb />
having it's only ever undefeated<lb />
record.<lb />
How about Steve Logan's call<lb />
at West Virginia on Sept. 14,<lb />
1996? Instead of forcing overtime,<lb />
see UAB page A8<lb />
James Pinkney had to run for his life as the UAB front seven confused the<lb />

time of 15:31:37.<lb />
Verrelle Taylor (Campbell) as<lb />
stated above finished first with a<lb />
time of 15:31.37. He was followed<lb />
by Aaron Kolk (UNC-W) finished<lb />
with a time of 15:41.88. Coming in<lb />
third was Jeremy Helf (Campbell)<lb />
with a time of 15:56.92. Ian Bracy<lb />
(UNC-W) placed fourth with a time<lb />
of 16:04.25. Rounding out the top<lb />
five was Jacob Reed (unattached)<lb />
with a time of 16:07.19.<lb />
The outcome of the men's run<lb />
isn't so pleasant for ECU with all<lb />
due respect. Stephen Tausend fin-<lb />
ished 10th with a time of 16:36.08.<lb />
Chris Belfiore followed Tausend and<lb />
finish 11th with a time of 16:40.98.<lb />
Rich Saunders finished 12th with a<lb />
time of 16:41.71. Drew Jenkins fin-<lb />
ished 16th with a time of 17:02.31.<lb />
Kyle Yunaska placed 28th with the<lb />
time of 18:17.29. He was followed<lb />
by Bryan Snow with the time of<lb />
18:21.77. Michael Barnett was 30th<lb />
with a time of 18:26.74. Michael<lb />
Wall rounded out the pirates team<lb />
at the 33rd spot. His time was<lb />
19:36.46.<lb />
The silver lining after this<lb />
match is that the men's cross coun-<lb />
try team is dealing with a lot of<lb />
injuries. After finishing 3rd in this<lb />
Invitational, there is only room to<lb />
move up.<lb />
On the women's side, Charlotte<lb />
Farquharson (Campbell) outpaced<lb />
everyone to win with a time of<lb />
19:02:lO.Alyse Nelson (Campbell)<lb />
placed second with a time of 19:13.69.<lb />
Coming in third, was Nicole Briggs<lb />
representing ECU with a time of<lb />
19:29.46. Amelia Arthur (Camp-<lb />
bell) was 4th with a time of 19:35.97.<lb />
Rounding out the top five was<lb />
Hayley Flynn also representing<lb />
ECU with a time of 19:36.50.<lb />
The times for the ECU women<lb />
were pretty impressive. As stated<lb />
earlier Nicole Briggs placed third<lb />
overall individually with a time of<lb />
19:29.46. Hayley Flynn followed<lb />
her at fifth overall with a time of<lb />
19:36:50. Samantha Lichtner was<lb />
7th with a time of 19:52:12. Jennifer<lb />
White placed ninth with a time of<lb />
19:58:75.<lb />
Tayleigh Davis finished 11th<lb />
with a time of 20:06.74. Danielle<lb />
Petty finished 15th with a time of<lb />
20:21.50. Aisha Bilal-Mack placed<lb />
17th with a time of 20:34.66. Fol-<lb />
lowing her was Hollie Brooks with<lb />
a time of 20:39.26. Also following<lb />
her was Erinn Latta with a time of<lb />
20:56.88. Jessica Raphael rounded<lb />
out the women pirates' team. She<lb />
placed 24th was a time of 21:38:01.<lb />
After all was said and done, the<lb />
women had four runners in the top<lb />
10. Three of those that placed in the<lb />
top 10 were freshmen. The women<lb />
hope to improve upon this excellent<lb />
showing and win an match in the<lb />
upcoming future.<lb />
Up next on the schedule for both<lb />
the men and women is the Coastal<lb />
Carolina Invite on Sept. 16th. The<lb />
men will compete in the 8 K while<lb />
the women will compete in the 5<lb />

THE EAST CAROLINIAN SPORTS<lb />
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2006<lb />
UAB<lb />
continued from A7<lb />
Holtz said Allison's unchar-<lb />
acteristic drops and inability to<lb />
shake coverage frustrated the<lb />
senior, but would have been fine<lb />
had the Pirates won the game.<lb />
"Aundrae will trade a no-catch<lb />
game for a win right now Holtz<lb />
said at his weekly press luncheon<lb />
Monday. "His frustration was that<lb />
he wasn't making the plays. He<lb />
came in after one of those fades<lb />
and said, I gotta make that catch '<lb />
His frustration was that he wasn't<lb />
performing at the level he wanted<lb />
to perform to and not about his<lb />
record about how many games he<lb />
can catch a pass<lb />
While Allison was double-and-<lb />
triple-teamed by the Blazers often,<lb />
it opened up the field for ECU's<lb />
other wideouts to get open. Henry<lb />
and Drew had six catches apiece<lb />
and quarterback James Pinkney<lb />
connected with nine different<lb />
receivers for the second straight<lb />
week. Pinkney, who sprained his<lb />
right ankle during the game, com-<lb />
pleted 20 of his 38 pass attempts for<lb />
280 yards with the touchdown to<lb />
Drew and a second-quarter inter-<lb />
ception that led to a UAB field goal<lb />
right before halftime. The senior<lb />
quarterback wore a protective boot<lb />
Monday, but is not expected to miss<lb />
any practice time.<lb />
The Pirates out-gained the <lb />
Blazers, 376-323, and turnovers<lb />
were even at three. Holtz said the<lb />
defense turned in its "second-best<lb />
performance" in the two years he's<lb />
been at the helm of the football<lb />
ship and is expecting this team<lb />
to turn the corner.<lb />
"There are a million one plays'<lb />
that you could pick that changed the<lb />
course of that football game Holtz<lb />
said. "Phillip Henry's just happened<lb />
to be at the end of the game. We've<lb />
played over 300 plays here in two<lb />
games and the difference in winning<lb />
and losing these two games is two<lb />
plays. You change two plays and<lb />
what kind of attitude, confidence<lb />
and swagger does this team have?<lb />
"We've got 10 games left<lb />
on the schedule It's way too<lb />
early to start hanging our heads<lb />
and moping around. We've been<lb />
underdogs in both games and had<lb />
to go play on the road with a rela-<lb />
tively young team, and I've been<lb />
really proud of the way they've<lb />
competed, but now is not the time<lb />
to pat yourself on the back and say,<lb />
You know what, we're better than<lb />
we were a year ago That doesn't<lb />
matter. We just gotta get better<lb />
We got a long way to go<lb />

ECU volleyball tallies one win<lb />
in Comfort Suites Invitational<lb />
(KCU SID) The ECU vol-<lb />

evening in the Pirates' final match<lb />
of the Comfort Suites Invitational<lb />
hosted by Charlotte at Halton<lb />
Arena. ECU was swept 3-0 by<lb />
North Florida in the first match<lb />
while host Charlotte downed the<lb />
Lady Pirates 3-1.<lb />
The Pirates recorded their<lb />
second shutout win of the season,<lb />
beating Penn 30-22, 30-22,<lb />
With the win, ECU improves to 5-5<lb />
on the year while Penn falls to 0-3.<lb />
Kelley Wemert led the Pirates<lb />
offensively, with 19 kills. Mignon<lb />
Dubenion, who was named to the<lb />
all-tournament team, added 13 kills<lb />
and five block assists. Defensively,<lb />
ECU was powered by Heidi Krug,<lb />
who matched her career-high with<lb />
20 digs and 42 assists. She now has<lb />
3,551 career assists.<lb />
Chris Bushing's squad opened<lb />
the tournament with a disappointing<lb />
loss to North Florida, The Ospreys<lb />
won in three straight game 30-22,<lb />
30-24, 20-25.<lb />
Offensively, the Pirates were led<lb />
by Kelley Wernert who had 12 kills<lb />
in the match Mignon Dubenion<lb />
added 10 kills. Trish Monroe led<lb />
ECU on the defensive end, with<lb />
13 digs Heidi Krug is now juft 22<lb />
assists away from becoming the all-<lb />
time assists leader, as she tallied 34<lb />
assists on the match.<lb />
In the second game, ECU tell to<lb />
instate Charlotte 3-1 (31-29, 30-24,<lb />
30-14,30-24). Despite the loss, senior<lb />
setter I leidi Krug liecame tin-all-time<lb />
assist leader in ECU history with her<lb />
45 assists on the afternoon.<lb />
Kelley Wernert and teammate<lb />
Mignon Dubenion led the Pirates<lb />
with 14 kills each.<lb />
The Niners proved to be too<lb />
much for the Pirates, taking the<lb />
final two games to w in the match.<lb />
The Pirates were led on the defense<lb />
by Hannah Eenker and Stephanie<lb />
Turner with 10 digs each. Dubenion<lb />
also contributed up front with three<lb />
assisted blocks<lb />

OPINION<lb />
continued from A7<lb />
Logan decided to go for a two-<lb />
point conversion. ECU failed and<lb />
lost the game 10-9.<lb />
The Pirates came close to<lb />
winning at Alabama in 1998<lb />
when David Garrard was a fresh-<lb />
man. Instead of taking a SEC<lb />
out on the road, ECU's extra<lb />
point was blocked and taken back<lb />
for a Crimson Tide two-point<lb />
conversion. The play proved to<lb />
be the difference as ECU lost<lb />
23-22.<lb />
Even though many Pirate<lb />
backers want to erase the John<lb />
Thompson era from the record<lb />
books, ECU kept up with its<lb />
stereotype by repeatedly letting<lb />
chances slip through their fingers.<lb />
Who could forget Vonta Leach's<lb />
courageous 111-yard performance<lb />
against South Florida in Dowdy-<lb />
Ficklen in 2003? Having won one<lb />
game all season, ECU had the<lb />
chance to tie the game in double<lb />
overtime only to have Cameron<lb />
Broadwell's extra point attempt<lb />
blocked.<lb />
Yet another heartbreaking<lb />
defeat.<lb />
Debatably, the most gut<lb />
wrenching loss in Pirate his-<lb />
tory also happened in the state<lb />
of Alabama. Despite being up by<lb />
30 points in the second half, the<lb />
2001 team, with Steve Logan<lb />
at the helm, lost in double over-<lb />
time 64-61 to Byron Leftwich<lb />
and Marshall. The GMAC Bowl<lb />
loss left fans speechless and sent<lb />
a shockwave that ECU is still<lb />
trying to recover from.<lb />
Despite the Pirates' propen-<lb />
sity for fumbling away chances to<lb />
win, maybe Henry's play will turn<lb />
the mojo in the opposite direction.<lb />
Just maybe.<lb />
Aside from the lack of luck or<lb />
Alabama witchcraft, Skip Holtz<lb />
needs to instill enough confidence<lb />
to find a win versus Memphis on<lb />
Saturday. The team's recent lack<lb />
of winning attitude combined<lb />
with two recent heartbreaks puts<lb />
the Pirates in a super fragile state<lb />
ofaffairs. Just think what another<lb />
fumble would do.<lb />

ECU women's soccer notches one<lb />
win in N.C. State Tournament<lb />
Kirkley scores game<lb />
winner to beat Georgia<lb />
State 3-2<lb />
(ECU SID) After dropping<lb />
the first of two games in the N.C.<lb />
State Tournament to American<lb />
University, the ECU women's<lb />
soccer team battled back<lb />
on Sunday, defeating<lb />
Georgia State 3-2 on a game<lb />
winner by freshman Sarah Kirk-<lb />
ley in the 81st minute of play.<lb />
The goal by Kirkley was her<lb />
second on the season, giving her<lb />
a team-leading seven points.<lb />
Georgia State (2-3-1) jumped<lb />
out to the early lead when<lb />
Nathalie Carter kicked the ball<lb />
into the high right corner of the<lb />
net past Amber Campbell at the<lb />
1:14 mark. Campbell would go<lb />
on to allow another goal in the<lb />
47th minute, also by Carter. The<lb />
two goals let up by Campbell<lb />
ECU<lb />
03<lb />
GA. ST.<lb />
02<lb />
would be the most she has allowed<lb />
all season in a single game.<lb />
Tara Shaw recorded her second<lb />
and third goals of the season in the<lb />
first period just five minutes apart<lb />
from each other. Amy Szilard was<lb />
credited with her first colle-<lb />
giate assist when she passed it<lb />
off to Shaw through the box.<lb />
Sarah Kirkley would get her<lb />
first of three big points in the<lb />
game when she assisted Shaw off<lb />
a corner kick, who would head the<lb />
ball into the back of the net.<lb />
"Sarah Kirkley played a<lb />
phenomenal game today coming<lb />
through with the game winner<lb />
said head coach Rob Donnen-<lb />
wirth. "With the work ethic she<lb />
puts in she deserves it. Amy<lb />
Szilard also played a great game<lb />
for us up top. It was a hard<lb />
fought win<lb />
Jen Kurowicki would replace<lb />
Campbell and play 41:27.<lb />
Kurowicki would go on to finish<lb />
out the game without allowing a<lb />
goal. This was the second time in<lb />
six games that Kurowicki has seen<lb />
action, totaling 54:06, without<lb />
letting up a goal.<lb />
The Lady Pirates have now<lb />
played their first five out of six<lb />
games on the road and are off<lb />
to their best start of the season<lb />
since 2000, when they were<lb />
also 4-2 to begin the year. ECU<lb />
(4-2) will now come home to Bun-<lb />
ting Field for parent's weekend<lb />
and play host to UNC Wilming-<lb />
ton on Friday and Pennsylvania<lb />
on Sunday.<lb />
