Threatening the North Carolina<lb />

Ernesto brought rain and wind to<lb />
Greenville last Friday. In an effort<lb />
to keep the university staff and S<lb />

to close ECU due to severe weather. <lb />
Despite classes being cancelled <lb />
on Friday, very little damage was .g<lb />
done to campus. c<lb />
When Aaron Lucier, associ-<lb />

dorms had been flooded, he said,<lb />
"I'm not sure that flooded is the<lb />
proper terminology. There was<lb />

Avoid<lb />

Information you need<lb />
to know to stay safe<lb />
CHRISTOPHER STEVENSON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Students on campus want to<lb />
feel secure about their surround-<lb />
ings, but sometimes that means<lb />
students need to know the bad<lb />
along with the good about what<lb />
goes on within their campus<lb />
community<lb />
The topic of sexual assault is<lb />
a very serious topic and making<lb />
others aware of the information<lb />
surrounding this topic is impor-<lb />
tant.<lb />
If someone is walking into<lb />
a dangerous situation, it would<lb />
make sense that he or she would<lb />
have information that would<lb />
shield them from that danger,<lb />
but what if they thought they<lb />
were completely safe, unaware<lb />
of the danger that potentially<lb />
awaits them? Their guard would<lb />
be down and they would be open<lb />
to attack.<lb />
Sexual assault statistics<lb />
are open to the public, and it<lb />
is information that can help<lb />
inform women about potential<lb />
dangers.<lb />
According to the ECU main<lb />
crime statistics from 2004, there<lb />
were five forcible sex offenses on<lb />
campus that year.<lb />
Major Frank Knight<lb />
of the ECU police depart-<lb />
ment said that the 2O05 crime<lb />
statistics will be coming out this<lb />
October.<lb />
"The reason for the delay in<lb />
posting the previous year's sta-<lb />
tistics comes from the fact that<lb />
we have to survey the local police<lb />
departments, state law enforce-<lb />
ment agencies and federal law<lb />

Professors puzzled by decline in classroom attendance<lb />
(MCT) College professors<lb />
understand that 8 a.m. classes<lb />
are not the most popular among<lb />
students, but lately instructors<lb />
are wondering if any time would<lb />
be popular.<lb />
At UC Berkeley and else-<lb />
where, faculty members have<lb />
noticed declining attendance in<lb />
their classes the past year or two.<lb />
Some professors have resorted to<lb />
high-tech roll-taking methods to<lb />
keep students in their seats, while<lb />
others say the trend does not<lb />
bother them.<lb />
"One thing about college stu-<lb />
dents is that these students are<lb />
adults and can make their own<lb />
decisions said UC Berkeley pro-<lb />
fessor Alex Filippenko, whose<lb />
astronomy classes generally have<lb />
at least 700 students. About 200<lb />
usually attend, he said, while<lb />
others watch the lectures later on<lb />
Internet Web casts.<lb />
"In a largeclass, I'm not going<lb />
to force them to come Filippenko<lb />
said.<lb />
But the disappearing students<lb />
have alarmed enough professors to<lb />
prompt a lively online discussion<lb />
among Berkeley faculty members<lb />
this year and lead them to schedule<lb />
an October forum on the subject.<lb />
The online conversation began<lb />
last spring with a short message<lb />
from sociology professor Kristin<lb />
Luker, who noted that fewer than<lb />
half her students were showing up<lb />
to class that semester.<lb />
"Is it me?" She asked fellow<lb />
faculty members. "Is it a new<lb />
trend? Any thoughts?"<lb />
The questions opened the<lb />
door to a flood of suggestions<lb />
and observations. Several profes-<lb />
sors noted that the decline cor-<lb />
responded closely with the rise in<lb />
course materials available on the<lb />
Web, while others said too many<lb />
instructors are, well, boring.<lb />
Statistics lecturer Ani Adhi-<lb />
kari, who has won teaching awards<lb />
at Berkeley and Stanford, said she<lb />
has not seen attendance problems<lb />
in her courses. Some of that suc-<lb />
cess, she said, is because of the<lb />
complicated nature of statistics,<lb />
but she also prides herself on her<lb />
interactive teaching style.<lb />
"Jumping around in front of the<lb />
students is always a good thing<lb />
Adhikari said in an interview. "If<lb />
(students) could get everything they<lb />
needed from the book or a podcast,<lb />
I would actually not be offended<lb />
if they did not show up for class<lb />
To hear students talk about<lb />
it, one would think nobody ever<lb />
misses class.<lb />
Fourth-year UC Berkeley liter-<lb />
ature major Natalie Pham-Gia, 21,<lb />
said she cannot imagine relying on<lb />
the Internet for a college education.<lb />
"I hope it doesn't get to a<lb />
point where it's all done through<lb />
the computer Pham-Gia said. "I<lb />
think that's really lonely and not<lb />
very exciting<lb />
Freshman Fei Yang also said<lb />
he came to the Berkeley campus to<lb />
sit in a classroom.<lb />
"When you go to class, you<lb />
just learn better said Yang, 17.<lb />
"Technology will never be able to<lb />
replicate human interaction<lb />
But some academics say uni-<lb />
versities have yet to see the full<lb />
effects of technology on atten-<lb />
dance. After all, today's students<lb />
are "digital natives having used<lb />
computers since childhood.<lb />
Rather than policing truancy,<lb />
professors will have to find better<lb />
ways to use technology to reach<lb />
students who do not come to class,<lb />
said Diane Harley, a researcher<lb />
with UC Berkeley's Center for<lb />
Studies in Higher Education.<lb />
Students "have tools available<lb />
to them that make the concepts of<lb />
space and time much more fluid<lb />
Harley said. "Students have lives,<lb />
and the ability for students to sort<lb />
of navigate and juggle their time<lb />
reduces their stress.<lb />
"The new technologies offer<lb />
convenience and flexibility, and<lb />
students take advantage of that<lb />
Although computer-science<lb />
lecturer Americ Azevedo admitted<lb />
experiencing an "existential crisis"<lb />
when students did not attend his<lb />
classes, he said faculty members<lb />
should use computers to connect<lb />
with the digital natives and to<lb />
improve education.<lb />
"I think this is an opportu-<lb />
nity to have more interaction<lb />
with students, not less he said.<lb />
"I'm actually getting to the point<lb />
where I'm requiring students to<lb />
show up so they can see the dif-<lb />
ference between online and face-<lb />
to-face<lb />

ECU students called on to aid the Invisible Children'<lb />
In northern Uganda, children like these are being stolen from their homes<lb />
due to a civil war that's been going on for more than 25 years.<lb />
War in Africa moves<lb />
students to take action<lb />
VANESSA CLARKE<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Imagine this, a twenty year<lb />
civil war. Imagine a rebel leader<lb />
who has long since lost the sup-<lb />
port of the civilian population<lb />
is now systematically terrorizes.<lb />
Imagine children being stolen in<lb />
the night, brainwashed and forced<lb />
to fight and kill. Imagine failed<lb />
peace talks, international criminal<lb />
court warrants and international<lb />
apathy. Imagine a loss of hope.<lb />
This describes the well docu-<lb />
mented current situation in north-<lb />
ern Uganda.<lb />
Still, despite a lack of attention<lb />
from both the media and other<lb />
countries, there are people who<lb />
have learned of the situation and<lb />
are trying to help.<lb />
Three filmmakers from Cali-<lb />
fornia went to Africa in search<lb />
of a story that could "change the<lb />
world according to their Web<lb />
site, InvisibleChildren.com.<lb />
What they found was a war<lb />
that was the direct result of Brit-<lb />
ish colonization.<lb />
c<lb />
"British authorities utilized<lb />
8 'divide and rule' tactics that<lb />
J pitted various groups against each<lb />
other, a dynamic that has been<lb />
perpetuated by post-indepen-<lb />
dence politics according to the<lb />
Uganda Conflict Action Network<lb />
Web site.<lb />
The three men filmed the<lb />
conflict from the perspective of<lb />
the children who are forced to<lb />
fight against the Ugandan gov-<lb />
ernment, on the side of Joseph<lb />
Kony's Lord's Resistance Army<lb />
. They set the documentary to<lb />
a poprock soundtrack, to make<lb />
it appeal to the MTV generation<lb />
and sent out a call for young men<lb />
and women to get involved.<lb />
Anna Azarjew, a sophomore<lb />
political science major, and Mack-<lb />
enzie Peel, a junior art major, felt<lb />
compelled to get involved after<lb />
seeing the movie on campus in April.<lb />
"I just have a huge heart for<lb />
Africa and a huge heart for the<lb />
kids. I felt called, like God really<lb />
wanted me there said Azarjew.<lb />
They decided to host their<lb />
own screening of Invisible Chil-<lb />
dren in July. However, they went<lb />
one step further. They decided to<lb />
raise money to send to Invisible<lb />
Children, who would in turn, send<lb />
the money to Uganda.<lb />
They sold Invisible Children<lb />
merchandise, had a bake sale and<lb />
invited several Christian artists<lb />
to sell their wares. In total, they<lb />
have raised over $1, 200.<lb />
"We never imagined raising<lb />
over $1,200 and it's amazing that<lb />
we have Azarjew said. "We're<lb />
not trying to put it all on our-<lb />
selves, we need help from other<lb />
people. That's why we are here, to<lb />
get help from other people<lb />
Still, that was not enough<lb />
for Azarjew and Peel. They have<lb />
more screenings in the works in<lb />
the future. They also wanted to<lb />
host an Invisible Children festival<lb />
and are in the process of talking<lb />
to American Eagle to sponsor the<lb />
event, Azarjew said.<lb />
"We decided that it is a really,<lb />
really urgent cause. We in Amer-<lb />
ica have a responsibility to the<lb />
world to really show what's going<lb />
on Azarjew said. "We pride<lb />
ourselves on human rights<lb />
and,we pride ourselves in<lb />
freedom of everything<lb />
These children in Uganda<lb />
do not have the freedom to do<lb />
many things Americans take for<lb />
granted, according to the United<lb />
Nations Integrated Regional<lb />
Information Networks. Simple<lb />
things, such as parents being<lb />
able to protect their children and<lb />
children being able to go to sleep<lb />
in their own homes, without the<lb />
fear that they will be kidnapped in<lb />
the middle of the night.<lb />
And that is what really touched<lb />
Azarjew, what really called her<lb />
into action.<lb />
"The fact that those kids have<lb />
to live like adults they have to<lb />
fear for their lives every second of<lb />
every day. I just think it's unfair<lb />
Azarjew said.<lb />

(AP) - Jackie Blackman says the chief<lb />
hazard of his job is complacency.<lb />
"If you relax and let your guard down,<lb />
that's when you're going to get hurt<lb />
said Blackman, 51. "I've had a broken<lb />
hand, broken foot, broken ribs, most<lb />
of the times I've been hurt has been<lb />
because of carelessness on my<lb />
part<lb />
Blackman shoes horses.<lb />
On a recent morning, Blackman's care<lb />
was evident. He took his time, making<lb />
sure he completed each step in the<lb />
process properly before moving on<lb />
to the next.<lb />
The object of Blackman's attentions<lb />
was Winston, a 13-year-old<lb />
Standardbred Fayetteville police<lb />
horse.<lb />
Winston is one of thousands of horses<lb />
that Blackman, a licensed farrier, has<lb />
shod over the years. It's a profession<lb />
he found by accident.<lb />
Twenty-six years ago, Blackman was<lb />
just a horse owner. One day he asked<lb />
his farrier, Stephen Eldridge, about<lb />
his work.<lb />

Suspect Rings Feces In Courtroom<lb />
(Duluth News Tribune) - Vandale Amos<lb />
Willis, 28, a Chicago man convicted<lb />
of importing cocaine into Duluth,<lb />
Minnesota, fired his public defender<lb />
in the courtroom and elected to<lb />
represent himself. That happens.<lb />
What happened next has never<lb />
before been seen in the St. Louis<lb />
County Courthouse or perhaps any<lb />
courthouse.<lb />
Willis smeared his own feces across<lb />
the top of the table where he and<lb />
St. Louis County prosecutor Vern<lb />
Swanum were sitting and also spread<lb />
It on a chair. He threw some more on<lb />
the carpeted floor before displaying<lb />
even more bizarre behavior.<lb />
"He was literally smearing feces on<lb />
his face and into his mouth Swanum<lb />
said. "He was putting it into his mouth.<lb />
That's when he kind of advanced<lb />
toward me. As I explained to one of my<lb />
compatriots, that's when I decided to<lb />
redeploy to a more secure position<lb />
Swanum said Willis has no recorded<lb />
history of mental illness. "I think he was<lb />
trying to goad the court into declaring<lb />
a mistrial Swanum said. "I can't get<lb />
into his mind, but I believe it was<lb />
intentional manipulative conduct<lb />
A St. Louis County sheriff's deputy<lb />
removed Willis from the courtroom. He<lb />
was brought back to court to complete<lb />
the trial Thursday afternoon. The<lb />
defendant had requested he be tried<lb />
by a judge instead of a jury.<lb />
Sixth Judicial District Judge, David<lb />
Sullivan, found Willis guilty of all three<lb />
crimes he was charged with. They were,<lb />
importation of controlled substance<lb />
across state borders, first-degree<lb />
possession of cocaine with intent<lb />
to sell, and first-degree possession<lb />
of cocaine. He is scheduled to be<lb />
sentenced next month. He faces a<lb />
guideline sentence of 86 months in<lb />
prison.<lb />
Sullivan is the judicial district's chief<lb />
judge. He declined comment on Willis'<lb />
behavior. He could have found Willis in<lb />
contempt of court, but didn't.<lb />

OPINION COLUMNIST<lb />
OK. I know this is a weird thing for me to be<lb />
starting out the semester with, but if you've read my<lb />
articles before then you probably might expect some-<lb />
thing like this. If not, what have you been reading?<lb />
How cool is it that 'Peewee's Playhouse" is back<lb />
on TV? For those of you who don't know, Cartoon<lb />
Network's Adult Swim block has included the old<lb />
show in its late-night line-up.<lb />
Who would have thought that Laurence Fish-<lb />
burne would go from delighting us with his cowboy<lb />
antics as Cowboy Curtis, to leading a resistance<lb />
against machines and foretelling the prophecy of<lb />
"The One" in The Matrix movies?<lb />
Or how about S. Epatha Merkerson? Some of<lb />
you may know her as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren<lb />
from NBC's Law &? Order, but before that she was<lb />
delivering mail as Reba the Mail Lady.<lb />
Phil Hartman also played a big part in making<lb />
Pee-wee a success, from working helping to create<lb />
the character, to co-writing Pee-wee's first film. He<lb />
even played the character of Captain Carl on the show<lb />
and the earlier HBO special.<lb />
Before taking-off with his music career and<lb />
before he would work on scarier and arguably more<lb />
disturbing things, Rob Zombie was a production<lb />
assistant for the show.<lb />
Pee-wee Herman was created and portrayed by<lb />
actorcomedian Paul Reubens. Born Paul Rubenfeld<lb />
he grew up in Sarasota, Florida, where his parents<lb />
owned a lamp store. During winters, the Ringling<lb />
Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus called Sara-<lb />
sota home, and called such families as the Wallendas<lb />
and the Zacchinis his neighbors. The circus sparked<lb />
his interest in entertainment. If anything, Pee-wee's<lb />
second movie, Big Top Pee-wee, was probably in<lb />
homage to his childhood.<lb />
The inspiration for the name "Pee-wee" came<lb />
from a Pee-wee brand miniature harmonica and the<lb />
surname of an energetic boy Reubens knew from<lb />
his youth.<lb />
Reubens first appeared in the Film Cheech iS<lb />
Chong's Next Movie and in Nice Dreams in 1981.<lb />
Reubens also had a part in The Blues Brothers and<lb />
Meatballs II.<lb />
Reubens then developed a live stage show entitled<lb />
The Pee-wee Herman Show which featured many<lb />
characters that would go on to appear on the show<lb />
we all remember, such as Captain Carl, Jambi the<lb />
Genie, Miss Yvonne and Clocky. When it became<lb />
successful, he sold it to HBO in 1981, where it was<lb />
filmed as an adult comedy special.<lb />
In 1985 Reubens and then young director Tim<lb />
Burton teamed-up to make the comedy film Pee-<lb />
wee's Big Adventure. It cost a relatively modest $6<lb />
million to make, but took in $45 million at the box<lb />
office and becoming one of the year's surprise hits.<lb />
Thanks to the movie's runaway success, in<lb />
198B CBS offered Reubens a Saturday morning TV<lb />
timeslot, total creative control and a huge budget of<lb />
$325,000 per-episode.<lb />
When I was younger, I always imagined my first<lb />
apartment would be like The Playhouse. Boy if that<lb />
isn't way off! Of course now I'm at the age where<lb />
you don't want the furniture talking to you, but if<lb />
it is. . well. I suggest that you either need to take<lb />
something or stop taking something.<lb />
Sadly, Reubens' career has been let's say less<lb />
than noticeable in the past couple of years, appear-<lb />
ing in such cult favorites as Buffy the I'ampire Slayer,<lb />
Mystery Men, and Blow, as well as TV guest appear-<lb />
ances on "Everybody Loves Raymond and "Reno<lb />
911 to name a few.<lb />
Reubens legal troubles have even continued<lb />
since his first infamous arrest back in 1991. Reubens<lb />
was arrested again in 2002 in connection with an<lb />
investigation involving child pornography, which<lb />
coincided with an unrelated child pornography case<lb />
involving actor Jeffrey Jones. On March 22, 2004,<lb />
chilli pornography charges against him were dropped<lb />
by Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo after<lb />
Reubens pleaded guilty to a separate "misdemeanor<lb />
obscenity" charge. Public news stories concerning<lb />
his case cast doubt upon the suggestion that Reu-<lb />
bens intentionally acquired child pornography, as<lb />
he stated that he was a collector of "erotic artwork"<lb />
and that he had a sizable collection of vintage erotica<lb />
with samples dating back to the 18th century.<lb />
Despite all of the legal problems he's had,<lb />
Reubens once said something in an interview with<lb />
Boiling Stone about his work with "Pee-wee's Play-<lb />
house" that I think is kind of cool and captures the<lb />
real him.<lb />
"I'm just trying to illustrate that it's OK to be<lb />
different - not that it's good, not that it's bad, but<lb />
that it's all right. I'm trying to tell kids to have a<lb />
good time and to encourage them to be creative and<lb />
to question things<lb />
I guess that message will continue on in some<lb />
way, as Reubens has made several appearances on<lb />
various talk shows stating that new Pee-wee movies<lb />
are on the horizon.<lb />

LIZ LAUTEN<lb />
CONTRIBUTING COLUMNIST<lb />
By now I'm confident that even the freshmen are<lb />
familiar with the cult-like trend of Facebook (it's one<lb />
thing to choose not to use it, but I would think we<lb />
all know what it is by now), so I won't bother going<lb />
into detail explaining its every nuance. However, I<lb />
must say something about this new "facelift" that it<lb />
has been given.<lb />
Facebook has single-handedly propelled itself to<lb />
the top of the list as far as new breeding grounds<lb />
for stalkers go. As if it wasn't taking over our lives<lb />
and collegiate culture enough already, Facebook has<lb />
found yet another way to make sure we know every<lb />
detail of those around us.<lb />
I thought the recent addition of blogging capa-<lb />
bilities was pushing the original Facebook idea a<lb />
bit far, but obviously the ingenious creators in Palo<lb />
Alto, Calif, disagreed. For them, being able to see<lb />
your friend's pictures, comments and other friends<lb />
was not enough. Now we have the ability to see<lb />
details from their 10 most recent moves of the day,<lb />
to their newly added friends, to their most recent<lb />
comments they've made. It is mildly interesting to<lb />
know my friend's new favorite novel, but what are<lb />
we going to talk about in person now? There's no<lb />
point to gossip with girlfriends anymore. I'm sure<lb />
Facebook feels it's being creative and helpful once<lb />
again, but do you think they have actually stopped<lb />
to think about the damper they are going to put on<lb />
my relationships, as we will have no secrets left to<lb />
gab about after a few weeks of this?<lb />
While I'm pretty open about most things,<lb />
privacy is important to me and it would seem that<lb />
hundreds of other ECU students agree, as groups<lb />
such as the "We hate the new stalker layout" activist<lb />
group and "I feel like I'm stalking everyone on Face-<lb />
book with this new layout" have popped up all over<lb />
the site. All the outcries seem to be same, as far as<lb />
Facebook was concerned - simple was better. I liked<lb />
the clean lines and the minimalist approach it took in<lb />
keeping people connected. Myspace is where 1 went<lb />
crazy with html and Xanga is where I blogged my<lb />
little heart out. I don't need all of this extra "stuff"<lb />
on Facebook as far as I'm concerned.<lb />
I actually thought my friend's Facebook page<lb />
was broken when I saw all of her photos and current<lb />
information displayed on her page on the morning<lb />
of the changes. It wasn't until I went to my own<lb />
profile and my home page, did I realize that Face-<lb />
book was not broken, but rather the designers are<lb />
playing a sick, permanent joke on the millions of<lb />
registered users.<lb />
And really, what about all the stalkers out there?<lb />
I know people joke around about being a "Facebook<lb />
stalker but now as long as you could find a way to<lb />
an account, you could seriously be in the know about<lb />
someone to a creepy degree. Sure there are privacy<lb />
settings, but when is enough, enough?<lb />
1 think the best new group I've seen, thanks to the<lb />
changes, is "Change Facebook Back, You Fools<lb />

I love being in love :)<lb />
Two nights ago some of my friends were<lb />
being picked up by a sober driver from<lb />
downtown. Despite the fact that he was<lb />
doing not only his friends a service but also<lb />
the entire community, he was ticketed for<lb />
driving at a speed slow enough to impede<lb />
traffic. The police here in Greenville are to<lb />
scared of any actual police work and would<lb />
rather prey on "rich college kids" causing no<lb />
harm rather than stop a lager problem, like<lb />
say the drug deals and prostitution going on<lb />
constantly on the other side of the tracks.<lb />
The driver of the brown bus today didn't<lb />
even know his route. He kept asking us to<lb />
look at the map and tell him where he was<lb />
supposed to stop. The brown bus has been<lb />
slow and behind since the first day of classes.<lb />
The air conditioning is broken on it to.<lb />
I hate when professors don't erase the<lb />
board well enough. I just keep looking at<lb />
that one spot, it's so annoying!<lb />
Does anyone else find it hilarious to see a<lb />
Confederate flag license plate on a<lb />
Korean car?<lb />
Every time I call safe ride its busy then<lb />
I have to walk home drunk through the<lb />

I hate people who say they hate freshman.<lb />
I see, "I hated me when I was a Freshman<lb />
and I'm wondering how stupid you have to<lb />
be to make a statement like that Everyone<lb />
deserves the chance to come here and<lb />
learn and party without some stuck up, frat<lb />
boy or sorority girl, six year senior telling<lb />
them they suck. The whole undergrad class<lb />
sucks, so bunch yourselves together. Next<lb />
time you're in class take a look around at 10<lb />
other kids sitting near you and remember<lb />
that only four will actually graduate.<lb />
I told myself I would not be attracted to a<lb />
sexy coworker. I lied.<lb />
Why doesn't ECU police enforce the<lb />
city noise ordinance for car stereo's on<lb />
campus?<lb />
Why is it so cold in Fleming?<lb />
The Neo-Nazi police department has once<lb />
again done a stupendous job protecting the<lb />
students from drunk-driving. I have always<lb />
been interested in curbing drunk driving,<lb />
but I never thought to force drunken people<lb />
off the Pirate Express Buses. After all,<lb />
those kids could have beaten up the driver,<lb />
taken over the bus and driven drunk. This<lb />
was a brilliant, strategic move by Greenville<lb />
Police Department. They stopped them<lb />
from doing something dangerous. I wonder<lb />
how they got home though.<lb />
I am secretly in love with Paris Hilton's<lb />
"Stars Are Blind .<lb />
I swear I have found the best roomie ever!<lb />
She cooks me dinner, cleans the house,<lb />
does my laundry and drives me and picks<lb />
me up from class. Seriously who ever said<lb />
never live with your best friend, obviously<lb />
didn't know mine!<lb />
It does not make you look cool if you wear<lb />
your keys and your wallet around your neck,<lb />
it makes you look stupid.<lb />
Why are campus resources being used to<lb />
find the chancellor a new house? He says<lb />
it is too noisy in the neighborhood. What<lb />
about the other residents is ECU going to<lb />
relocate them too. That is the historic home<lb />
of the chancellor and it should remain that<lb />
way!<lb />
I'm a 24 year old army veteran. The CMGT<lb />

There are way to many buses that use the<lb />

To my old roommate, just wanted to let you<lb />

How to buy rounds for<lb />
all your friends and still<lb />

LIZ FULTON<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Let's be honest- if you are like<lb />
most students, the minute you<lb />
receive your monthly allowance<lb />
from the parentals, it is spent before<lb />
the paperwork has been processed<lb />
at the bank.<lb />
No matter how many times you<lb />
tell yourself that this month will be<lb />
different and the money will last,<lb />
some little emergency comes up and<lb />
you find yourself stealing bananas<lb />
from the dining hall.<lb />
Basically, there are two paths<lb />
you can take: stop spending all your<lb />
money or essentially keep the cash<lb />
flow more constant than the one<lb />
deposit made at the first of every<lb />
month.<lb />
I am more prone to identify with<lb />
option two. There are plenty of ways<lb />
to make money in this town, and all it<lb />
takes is a little ingenuity and an ultimate<lb />
sacrifice of your pride and morality.<lb />
The most obvious way to<lb />
make more money is to get a job.<lb />
Plenty of people have them but if<lb />
you know that working for "the<lb />
man" is a dent in your armor of<lb />
self-righteousness, then we can<lb />
move along to other modes of<lb />
monetary acquisition.<lb />
While this isn't an exactly fool-<lb />
proof plan, buy a lot of lottery tick-<lb />
ets. Somebody has to win, right<lb />
Why can't it be you? However, if<lb />
you desire more of a challenge in<lb />
gambling, secretly learn how to play<lb />
Texas Hold 'Em. That way you can<lb />
either hustle your friends out of all<lb />
their money or go for the big bucks<lb />
in online tournaments.<lb />
If gambling is too morally offen-<lb />
sive, then try a scam that has been<lb />
perfected by one of my friends. This<lb />
works especially well if you are an<lb />
art or interior design major. Make<lb />
a call to your favorite parent and<lb />
inform that all of a sudden, your<lb />
heinous professor has demanded<lb />
that you buy more bookssup-<lb />
pliesfabricetc. As this is clearly<lb />
something your parents will see as<lb />
a benefit to your college education,<lb />
they will definitely get you the<lb />
money that will instead be spent on<lb />
killer new boots or simply a night<lb />
of carousing.<lb />
Also falling into this region of<lb />
creative spending is the power of<lb />
the gas card. To keep the bill from<lb />
getting too high, stop using it solely<lb />
for gas (yay public transit!) and buy<lb />
from the extensive adult beverage<lb />
section for your friends. That lands<lb />
you cash in your pocket and beer<lb />
in your friends' hands. Everybody<lb />
wins!<lb />
If after all of this, you still find<lb />
yourself mooching or eating Ramen<lb />
for three meals a day, try exchang-<lb />
ing favors with your rich friends<lb />
for money. I'm sure that absence of<lb />
their maid and the actual possibility<lb />
of having to do their own laundry<lb />
will make them all too eager to pay<lb />
you to do it.<lb />
You could also create a ser-<lb />
vice that would benefit strangers<lb />
and friends alike. Think Shannen<lb />
Doherty and become the middleman<lb />
when someone wants to break up with<lb />
his or her significant other. Best case<lb />
scenario, you could score yourself a<lb />
AAMN: Let's hear<lb />
it for male nurses<lb />
American Assembly of Men in<lb />
Nursing at ECU<lb />
CAROLYN SCANDURA<lb />
FEATURES EDITOR<lb />
For the most part, when someone says the word<lb />
"nurse a female dressed in white comes to mind.<lb />
Fortunately times are changing and there is a grow-<lb />
ing population of men in the nursing workforce. Here<lb />
at ECU, one of the organizations that supports these<lb />
male nurses is the American Assembly of Men in<lb />
Nursing, or AAMN.<lb />
Historically, the earliest evidence of men as<lb />
nurses was found in Ayur-Veda, ancient Indian books,<lb />
which discuss the prevention and cure of disease. In<lb />
these books, the nurses that we mentioned were<lb />
always male. In American history, male nurses were<lb />
an important part of the Civil War as combat medics<lb />
for both the Confederate and Union troops.<lb />
The AAMN was first organized in 1971 toencour-<lb />
age men of all ages to join the nursing profession, to<lb />
support the men who were al ready nurses to grow pro-<lb />
fessionally and to be advocates for men's health issues.<lb />
According to aamn.org the national purpose<lb />
of the organization is to "provide a framework for<lb />
nurses, as a group, to meet, to discuss and influence<lb />
factors, which affect men as nurses<lb />
At ECU the School of Nursing AAMN chapter<lb />
has a simple purpose according to Philip Julian, the<lb />
faculty advisor for the chapter: "We are just here to<lb />
get the word out to students<lb />
Membership, at ECU and nationally, is open to<lb />
any nurse, male or female, to better facilitate discus-<lb />
sion and to meet the most important objective of<lb />
AAMN: strengthening and humanizing health care.<lb />
Each year, AAMN holds a conference rotating<lb />
the theme so that one year focuses on men's health<lb />
issues and the next focuses on issues of gender in<lb />
nursing. Like many other professional organizations,<lb />
membership is required but can be obtained on many<lb />
different levels. Full membership, which is available<lb />
to Registered Nurses, includes a voice with a vote<lb />
at AAMN meetings, appointment or election to an<lb />
AAMN office, quarterly newsletters and reports and<lb />

What makes or breaks a<lb />

It isn't always easy living with someone in a close space, whether it be a dorm room or an apartment as shown above.<lb />

in North Carolina<lb />
Adjusting to life with a<lb />
new roommate<lb />
SHANNON DAVIS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Preparing for a new semester is<lb />
stressful enough with purchasing<lb />
unnecessarily expensive books,<lb />
finding the right classrooms and<lb />
being submerged among thou-<lb />
sands of complete strangers, but<lb />
the anxiety of living with an<lb />
unfamiliar person outweighs all<lb />
other trepidations.<lb />
Some people are lucky enough<lb />
to be paired up with their "second<lb />
half the one person they could<lb />
not live without, while others are<lb />
more unfortunate and wind up<lb />
with Satan's offspring.<lb />
A senior mathematics major<lb />
spoke about her freshman year<lb />
roommate as "an emotionally<lb />
unbalanced, un-medicated bi-polar<lb />
mess, who four years later is still<lb />
four years away from graduating<lb />
A sophomore criminal justice<lb />
major reported that her room-<lb />
mate would have random out-<lb />
bursts of rage causing her to shake<lb />
uncontrollably, was obsessed with<lb />
undressing in front of her web cam<lb />
on a nightly basis and would con-<lb />
stantly smoke cigarettes in their<lb />
tiny, non-smoking dorm room.<lb />
Thankfully, not everyone who<lb />
lives on campus has horrible room-<lb />
mate tales such as these.<lb />
It takes a lot of patience and<lb />
consideration to have a success-<lb />
ful roommate relationship. One<lb />
person may need to adjust how<lb />
early or late they dry their hair<lb />
while the other may need to moni-<lb />
tor how loud they watch the<lb />
television when their roommate<lb />
is studying.<lb />
Roommates have to share a<lb />
small amount of space for their<lb />
belongings and cohabitate in a<lb />
cinderblock room, most likely<lb />
sharing characteristics much like<lb />
a jail cell.<lb />
Who sleeps on the top bunk?<lb />
Who sleeps on the bottom? Does<lb />
a game of rock-paper-scissors<lb />
settle that decision or does some-<lb />
one actually enjoy scampering up<lb />
the side of the beds to their only<lb />
sanctuary in the room?<lb />
Privacy also becomes an issue.<lb />
When living in a residence hall,<lb />
there are no barriers. The matter of<lb />
privacy goes out of the window.<lb />
Roommates can become "best<lb />
friends forever" in a matter of days<lb />
or they could become each other's<lb />
worst enemies. Sometimes both<lb />
situations can occur. A triumphant<lb />
roommate relationship is based<lb />
solely on open communication and<lb />
thoughtfulness. If your roommate<lb />
is bugging you, the only way they<lb />
will know is if you tell them.<lb />
Try setting some kind of<lb />
schedule if the two of you really<lb />
cannot get along. Set aside time<lb />
tor both of you can be in the room<lb />
alone, without your roommate<lb />
bothering you.<lb />
Schedule quiet time and try to<lb />
do something together, outside of<lb />
the room, once a week. This may<lb />
help to strengthen your relation-<lb />
ship inside the room and realize<lb />
that the other person may actually<lb />
be human.<lb />
Living with someone new can<lb />
be challenging but it can also be<lb />
fun so long as people have open<lb />
minds and honest hearts.<lb />

First thing's first, you may<lb />

We look forward to intro-<lb />

bordering states.<lb />
One of the first places that<lb />
came to mind when trying to<lb />
pick a city to kick off our series<lb />
was Charlotte. It is filled with<lb />
a variety things of to do and<lb />
places to visit set in a backdrop of<lb />
cultural significance.<lb />
Charlotte is home to some of<lb />
North Carolina's most famous<lb />
sports teams, like the Charlotte<lb />
Bobcats and the Carolina Pan-<lb />
thers. Charlotte also houses<lb />
the Lowe's Motor Speedway,<lb />
which plays host to NASCAR's<lb />
Coca-Cola 600.<lb />
If sports aren't your thing, you<lb />
may be interested in a day of shop-<lb />
ping. Charlotte's Southpark Mall<lb />
offers visitors a chance to shop at a<lb />
premier variety of stores including<lb />
Anthropologie, Coach, Kenneth<lb />
Cole, Tiffany's and many more.<lb />
Ifyou are interested in heading<lb />
out of town a bit, a short drive to<lb />
Concord Mills in Concord, N.C<lb />
will lead you to an expansive<lb />
amount of shopping that won't<lb />
break your budget.<lb />
Ifyou are up for a day of fun<lb />
in the sun, a visit to Paramount's<lb />
Carowinds should quench your<lb />
thirst for excitement. Carowinds<lb />
features tons of thrilling rides as<lb />
well as live entertainment that is<lb />
sure to please those from every<lb />
walk of life.<lb />
Carowinds isn't the only place<lb />
to enjoy some heart-pounding fun.<lb />
Lowe's Motor Speedway, host of the Coca-Cola 600, in Charlotte is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the area.<lb />
DeAngelo Williams outruns an opponent at the Carolina Panthers Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC.<lb />
A visit to Victory Lane Indoor<lb />
Carting Center allows visitors<lb />
to race go-carts at up to 28 mph<lb />
speeds.<lb />
Once you get your adrenaline<lb />
rushing, you can keep your buzz<lb />
by visiting Laser Quest. The<lb />
indoor laser maze offers a variety<lb />
of games and levels of difficulty.<lb />
After all the excitement you<lb />
may be exhausted and tempted to<lb />
head back to Pirate Country, but<lb />
another good way to wind down<lb />
is by visiting Charlotte's Mint<lb />
Museum of Art. The museum is<lb />
home to permanent collections of<lb />
American and European paintings<lb />
and furniture as well as African,<lb />
pre-Colombian and Spanish art.<lb />
A road trip to Charlotte will<lb />
take over four hours, but the<lb />
experience is definitely worth the<lb />
drive. Another plus to the trip<lb />
is being able to spend time with<lb />
friends and family away from<lb />
school and stress.<lb />

RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Skip Holtz said one thing he<lb />
expected from James Pinkney<lb />
this season was for his senior<lb />
quarterback to emerge as a leader.<lb />
Pinkney,<lb />
quiet by<lb />
nat u re,<lb />
has been<lb />
more<lb />
vocal<lb />
during<lb />
practice and, Saturday at Navy,<lb />
it was leadership by example as<lb />
Pinkney connected on 24 of his<lb />
35 pass attempts for 283 yards<lb />
with two touchdowns and no<lb />
interceptions in the 28-23 loss to<lb />
the Midshipmen<lb />
"I thought James had a great<lb />
day Holtz said. "He would like to<lb />
carries the ball in the second quarter as Matt Hall throws a cut block.<lb />
NAVY<lb />
28<lb />
ECU<lb />
23<lb />
have four or five passes back that<lb />
he threw, but at the end of the day<lb />
he completed 69 percent of his<lb />
passes and threw for 283 yards.<lb />
I thought he played very well in<lb />
the game<lb />
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound<lb />
senior from Delray Beach, Fla. got<lb />
off to a great start, leading the<lb />
Pirates to a 14-7 lead in the second<lb />
quarter. At halftime, Pinkney<lb />
was 15-of-lS for 165 yards and a<lb />
touchdown.<lb />
"He did some good things<lb />
said quarterbacks coach Phil<lb />
Petty. "As always, you go back<lb />
and there are things you can get<lb />
better at, but the one thing he did<lb />
was he played hard. He was tough<lb />
and he was leader and he pro-<lb />
tected the ball, which is what we<lb />
ask him to do, and he made some<lb />
great plays<lb />
Pinkney said that his goals<lb />
coming into the season were to<lb />
read defenses better and develop<lb />

James Pinkney threw for 283<lb />
yards despite being sacked by<lb />
Jon Chan in the third quarter.<lb />
OPINION<lb />
Navy loss stings,<lb />
but Pirates can<lb />
bounce back<lb />
Navy is the second-best team ECU will<lb />
play all season<lb />
ERIC GILMORE<lb />
SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
ECU put up a tough fight in Annapolis.<lb />
But moral victories and five-point losses<lb />
aren't what the team needs in a season<lb />
where wins are so scarce. The schedule is<lb />
brutal and swing games such as Navy are<lb />
what will prevent tne Pirates from earning<lb />
a postseason berth.<lb />
Despite the devastating loss, the Pirates<lb />
figure to be alright. They competed hard and<lb />
were an onside Kick short of watching ECU<lb />
quarterback James Pinkney pull a come-<lb />
from-behind win. If only the referee had seen<lb />
the Midshipmen special teams player snatch<lb />
the ball from Phillip Henry's hands.<lb />
People may not realize it now, but Navy<lb />
is really that good. Aside frwm Air Forces<lb />
variation, Navy is only team in the nation to<lb />
run a true triple-option scheme.<lb />
The scheme gave ECU's inexperienced<lb />
defense fits of trouble as it will with the rest<lb />
of the nation.<lb />
As Holtz had predicted, the unproven<lb />
linebacking unit was exposed as the Navy<lb />
offensive line repeatedly cut blocked them<lb />
across the line of scrimmage.<lb />
Navy is the second-best team that ECU<lb />
will play all year. The Midshipmen have a<lb />
light schedule coming from the independent<lb />
ranks with Notre Dame serving as the only<lb />
sure loss.<lb />
Clearly, West Virginia showed with a 42-<lb />
10 blowout of Marshall that they are ECU's<lb />
best opponent. Virginia's offseason player<lb />
attrition was exposed as Pittsburg downed<lb />
the Wahoo's 38-13.<lb />
N.C. State's ineptitude on offense con-<lb />
tinued as Marcus Stone struggled to pass<lb />
against Division I-AA opponent Appalachian<lb />
State.<lb />
According to sources, Navy Head Coach<lb />
Paul Johnson was unhappy with quarterback<lb />
Brian Hampton's performance. According to<lb />
Johnson, the first-time starter missed several<lb />
reads in the confusing triple option scheme.<lb />
Fans didn't notice as the senior signal-<lb />
caller rushed for 149 yards. Adam Ballard is<lb />
an imposing figure, standing at 223 pounds<lb />
and striking fear up the middle while bar-<lb />
reling over defenders.<lb />
Yet ECU stood tough. They did break<lb />
a few times, watching Navy pound out 403<lb />
yards on the ground. Despite the loss, even<lb />
Head Coach Skip Holtz feels better about<lb />
losing this season's opener than winning<lb />
24-21 against Duke in 2005.<lb />
"I was pleased with what normally hap-<lb />
pens during a first game said Holtz. "Kick-<lb />
ing blunders, having long kick-off returns<lb />
for touchdowns, poor operation on your field<lb />
goals, turnovers on offense are some things<lb />
that occur for teams during their opening<lb />
game, but I was pleased with how we handled<lb />
the ball<lb />
The football adage is that a team improves<lb />
the most from game one to game two. The<lb />
newcomers have adjusted to the speed of the<lb />
game while getting the butterflies out. As<lb />
the amount of repetitions continue to mount,<lb />
so does the comfort level of the team.<lb />
"Most of the mistakes that we saw from<lb />
the Navy game are fixable Holtz said. "Last<lb />
year we made a bunch of personnel moves out<lb />
of the gate, but we won t do that this year.<lb />
It's just a case that freshman are going to<lb />
have to play like juniors. There's not a pill<lb />
for that. Its just going to take more hard<lb />
work and some time to solve some of those<lb />
problems<lb />
Now the key is to fix the season opener<lb />
woes with a win at UAB. If they don't, things<lb />
could head south quickly.<lb />

Men tout best recruiting<lb />
class in school history<lb />
JARED JACKSON<lb />
STAFF WRITKR<lb />
Shawn Heinchon and Tom<lb />
Morris hope to take KCU tennis<lb />
to new heights. The men's and<lb />
women's tennis coaches respec-<lb />
tively hope to execute better after<lb />
experiencing only mild success<lb />
last spring.<lb />
Heinchon is entering his third<lb />
season on staff and his second as<lb />
ECU's head men's coach. Again, the<lb />
squad will be inexperienced w ith<lb />
plenty of youth mixed throughout<lb />
the roster. In order to better the 8-<lb />
13 overall record and seventh place<lb />
Conference-USA finish, Heinchon<lb />
expects vast improvement across<lb />
the board.<lb />
"Our goals for the season are<lb />
to simply work as hard as ;e can<lb />
everyday 9aid Heinchon. "As far<lb />
as the numbers go we would like<lb />
to make improvements on last<lb />
year's results meaning our C-USA<lb />
finish and a better team record,<lb />
8-13 in 2005<lb />
With only two juniors on<lb />
the roster, Mike Catalano and<lb />
Henrique Viana will be forced to<lb />
show leadership responsibilities.<lb />
Catalano, a Williamston, NY.<lb />
native totaled a record of 12-15<lb />
in singles competition and a 2-8<lb />
record in doubles in the spring.<lb />
Viana, a Brazilian native, tallied<lb />
a 12-18 record in singles and 8-13<lb />
in doubles competition.<lb />
"I would consider all of our<lb />
guys leaders in their own right, but<lb />
junior Henrique Viana & sopho-<lb />
more Brian Walters have gone<lb />
above and beyond in the leader-<lb />
ship category both on and off the<lb />
court Heinchon said.<lb />
Sophomores Walters and Ales-<lb />
key Kochetov should be improved<lb />
after a year of Division I competi-<lb />
tion under their belts. Walters was<lb />
12-l(j in singles competition, while<lb />
being 6-11 in doubles competition<lb />
last year. Kochetov notched a 12-<lb />
17 in singles competition though<lb />
playing considerable tougher<lb />
opponents. He was 7-14 in doubles<lb />
competition.<lb />
The team's recruiting class<lb />
could be the focal point of the<lb />
team. Local favorite Greg Simon,<lb />
from nearby J.H. Rose High<lb />
School, reached the finals of the<lb />
Class 4-A state doubles champi-<lb />
onship with an improbable run<lb />
as the tourney underdog before<lb />
falling in three competitive sets.<lb />
According to the ECU's official<lb />
Web site, Simon also was selected<lb />
as the program's most valuable<lb />
player and received both Rose's<lb />
coaches and leadership award In<lb />
addition to his four year all-con-<lb />
ference accolades, he was chosen<lb />
as the league's player of the year.<lb />
The gem of the recruiting class<lb />
is Whit Whitwell. Whitwell,<lb />
who earned a No. l United States<lb />
Tennis Association state ranking<lb />
in the 18's Division after compil-<lb />
ing a No. 2 rating in the 16's,<lb />
captured a singles title for Little<lb />
Rock's Lutheran High School as<lb />
a sophomore while competing in<lb />
Arkansas' 2-A prep classification.<lb />
As a freshman, Whitwell played<lb />
a key role in leading Lutheran to<lb />
a state doubles championship. He<lb />
also reached the Sweet Sixteen at<lb />
the National Copper Bowl, one<lb />
of the nation's most prestigious<lb />
Junior Tennis tourneys.<lb />
During the summer, Whitwell<lb />
was rated the second-highest<lb />
prospect in Arkansas by Ten-<lb />
nisRecruiting.net. Whitwell has<lb />
posted a 25-6 national record<lb />
against opponents designated in a<lb />
similar classification or lower. He<lb />
also holds a top 30 regional rank<lb />
and is listed among the top 200<lb />
players nationally after attending<lb />
Newk's Tennis Academy in Texas<lb />
over the past two years.<lb />
The recruiting class is rounded<lb />
out by Will Peeler, Bryan Oakley<lb />
and Samuel McSpadden. The 2006<lb />
class has been ranked by TennisRe-<lb />
cruiting.net as one of the nation's<lb />
top SO classes and best among all<lb />
other C-USA programs.<lb />
The schedule remains tough<lb />
as ECU travels to Wilmington,<lb />
Raleigh and Chapel Hill and<lb />
Charleston, S.C. for various tour-<lb />
naments. The team starts a three<lb />
day matchup with UNCW, which<lb />
will start on Sept. 8.<lb />
"Our key matches this year<lb />
are not going to be just one match<lb />
Heinchon said. "We have seven or<lb />
eight nationally ranked teams that<lb />
we are fortunate enough to have on<lb />
our schedule<lb />
Women's tennis<lb />
The women's tennis team<lb />
enters the season with plenty<lb />
of optimism. Morris is return-<lb />
ing for his ninth season as head<lb />
coach. Morris' 115 wins marks<lb />
him as ECU's all-time winnineest<lb />
women's tennis coach.<lb />
Morris is hoping to break his<lb />
career-high 19 wins that the team<lb />
posted in the spring. With the<lb />
momentum brewing from a sixth-<lb />
place seed and a C-USA tourna-<lb />
ment win, expectations continue<lb />

Skip Holtz answers questions from media members tennis<lb />
(SID) On Navy: After<lb />
watching the film against Navy,<lb />
it's really frustrating to lose a<lb />
game like this. I think these play-<lb />
ers have worked so hard and put<lb />
their heart and soul out there on<lb />
the field. It wasn't a lack of effort<lb />
that put us at 0-1 at this point.<lb />
Navy did a nice job or running the<lb />
football with the scheme of what<lb />
they do. They have a lot of move-<lb />
ment, quickness and athleticism<lb />
on their front seven that caused<lb />
a lot of disruption on both sides<lb />
of the ball.<lb />
On the first game: 1 was<lb />
pleased with what normally hap-<lb />
pens during a first game. Kicking<lb />
blunders, having long kick-off<lb />
returns for touchdowns, poor<lb />
operation on, your field goals,<lb />
turnovers on offense are some<lb />
things that occur for teams during<lb />
their opening game, but I was<lb />
pleased with how we handled the<lb />
ball.<lb />
On the offensive and defen-<lb />
sive line: The front seven on<lb />
defense and offensive line is where<lb />
we have our most inexperience.<lb />
The same thing that we were con-<lb />
cerned about during camp is what<lb />
hurt us on the field. The offensive<lb />
line, with three new starters up<lb />
front and the youth on our defen-<lb />
sive front played cautious, hesitant<lb />
and like they hadn't played before.<lb />
When you play an offense that<lb />
is attacking and aggressive like<lb />
Navy, it just takes a little hesi-<lb />
tancy with the way they hit their<lb />
fullback, traps and options and at<lb />
that point it is too late.<lb />
Marcus Hands did some good<lb />
things and C.J. Wilson really<lb />
played well for his first game.<lb />
Mark Robinson is really playing<lb />
well for us right now as a nose<lb />
guard and played a very com-<lb />
petitive football game. Wendell<lb />
Chavis stepped in and did some<lb />
good things and Brandon Setzer<lb />
played pretty decent before he<lb />
was injured.<lb />
On the linebackers: When<lb />
you look at the linebacker position,<lb />
you have a whole lot of guys who<lb />
have never played. Quentin Cotton<lb />
did a pretty nice job along with<lb />
Van Eskridge, who made some<lb />
big plays. There were times when<lb />
you would look and be impressed<lb />
with what Fred Wilson and Jarrett<lb />
Wiggins did. There were so many<lb />
positive things such as how Van<lb />
Eskridge was running to the ball.<lb />
At the same time, on the very next<lb />
play they would go the wrong way.<lb />
We played very inconsistent like a<lb />
lot of inexperienced players do.<lb />
On the skill positions: When<lb />
you look at the wide receivers, run-<lb />
ning backs and James Pinkney, I<lb />
was very pleased with how they<lb />
performed on the offensive side<lb />
of the ball. I thought James had a<lb />
great day. He would like to have<lb />
four or five passes back that he<lb />
threw, but at the end of the day he<lb />
completed 69 percent of his passes<lb />
and threw for 283 yards. I thought<lb />
he played very well in the game.<lb />
The secondary played good<lb />
as well. It wasn't a coverage game<lb />
for them, but more of a run sup-<lb />
port kind of game. I thought the<lb />
seniors and the experience on this<lb />
football team played pretty well<lb />
and that's what makes this so frus-<lb />
trating right now because half of<lb />
your team is very senior laden and<lb />
experienced. Then when you go<lb />
to your front seven, you are start-<lb />
ing five freshman or sophomores.<lb />
Football is won on the offensive<lb />
and defensive line.<lb />
On injuries: Pierre Bell is still<lb />
unknown for this week. He has a<lb />
lack of strength right now in his<lb />
shoulder and we'll evaluate that as<lb />
we go. Brandon Setzer will be out<lb />
a minimum of two and a maximum<lb />
of four weeks with where he is now<lb />
with an injury to his knee. Drew<lb />
Sutton, who is a senior center,<lb />
was hurt during camp and he is<lb />
expected back by the end of the<lb />
week. Norman Whitley has been<lb />
out of practice for a week and will<lb />
have to undergo shoulder surgery<lb />
sometime next week.<lb />
On UAB: Everyone keeps<lb />
talking about how they lost their<lb />
quarterback in Hackney and how<lb />
it will be a different team with<lb />
the lack of his explosiveness as an<lb />
offensive weapon. They just played<lb />
at Oklahoma and lost 24-17. It<lb />
wasn't a fluke. They are starting<lb />
17 seniors on this football team.<lb />
Hackney may be gone but every-<lb />
one else is back. The strength of<lb />
their football team is not only their<lb />
experience but their defense. They<lb />
held Oklahoma to 14 first downs,<lb />
140 yards rushing and 230 yards<lb />
in passing. Oklahoma had a screen<lb />
play that went for 70 yards after<lb />
he broke about four tackles. If you<lb />
take that one play out of there, they<lb />
held Oklahoma to 300 yards on the<lb />
day. They created four turnovers,<lb />
had two great interceptions and<lb />
they forced two fumbles.<lb />
On the offensive side of the<lb />
ball they have changed everything.<lb />
Now that they have a new quarter-<lb />
back they run much more option.<lb />
They are spreading the field,<lb />
running the quarterback, chang-<lb />
ing their formations and running<lb />
out different personnel groups.<lb />
They averaged 5.5 yards per play<lb />
against Oklahoma. They do a<lb />
great job of protecting the ball. I<lb />
don't believe they had a turnover a.<lb />
in their opening game. They held<lb />
the ball for 35 minutes.<lb />
Skip Holtz complains about an<lb />
penalty in the fourth quarter.<lb />

PINKNEY<lb />
continued from A8<lb />
Chris Johnson scores his first<lb />
touchdown of the season.<lb />
a stronger arm. Both were evi-<lb />
dent Saturday. Pinkney, who is<lb />
now bench pressing over 300<lb />
pounds, did a good job of finding<lb />
the open receiver when he had<lb />
the time, and when under duress,<lb />
getting rid of the ball and avoid-<lb />
ing sacks.<lb />
Petty added that Pinkney's<lb />
growth as a leader has been<lb />
evident from the start of camp,<lb />
as well as the added punch in<lb />
his arm.<lb />
Pinkney's first touchdown<lb />
pass, a rifle shot to Kevin Roach<lb />
in the front right corner of the<lb />
end zone, was a play created by<lb />
Pinkney. He was flushed from<lb />
the pocket, rolled to his right<lb />
and sniped the ball on a rope to<lb />
Roach, just in front of the defen-<lb />
sive back and only where Roach<lb />
could get it.<lb />
Pinkney's other touchdown<lb />
pass went to junior wideout<lb />
Phillip Henry as the senior<lb />
signal caller took advantage of<lb />
ECU'S depth at the skill posi-<lb />
tions by finding nine different<lb />
receivers.<lb />
Pinkney, who threw for<lb />
over 2,700 yards a season ago<lb />
with 14 touchdown passes and<lb />
eight interceptions, expects to<lb />
improve on those numbers this<lb />
year. In order to put up better<lb />
statistics in 2006, he will need<lb />
to get better protection from his<lb />
young offensive line. The Pirates<lb />
were inconsistent running the<lb />
ball against Navy, netting just<lb />
76 yards, and Pinkney was under<lb />
constant pressure. He was sacked<lb />
just once, but that was more of a<lb />
tribute to his ability to get rid of<lb />
the ball.<lb />
"James took a beating Holtz<lb />
said immediately following the<lb />
game in Annapolis. "We couldn't<lb />
protect him. There were times<lb />
where we had guys running wide<lb />
open down the field and you look<lb />
back in the backfield and James<lb />
is running for his life. He made<lb />
some really good decisions and<lb />
played really well I think it's<lb />
just a shame we couldn't give him<lb />
more time<lb />
Aundrae Allison, who was<lb />
Pinkney's go-to guy last year with<lb />
83 receptions for 1,024 yards and<lb />
seven scores, caught six passes for<lb />
86 yards Saturday and said he was<lb />
impressed with Pinkney's play<lb />
and leadership on the field.<lb />
"Overall, he did a great job<lb />
the senior wideout said. "He was<lb />
there for the team and he got us<lb />
motivated throughout the game<lb />
and he ws the general of the-<lb />
team<lb />

said Knight.<lb />
Knight said it takes a while<lb />
for all these agencies to gather<lb />
the information that is specific<lb />
to ECU.<lb />
Other information that can be<lb />
beneficial for students is the ECU<lb />
crime logs, which are located on<lb />
the ECU Web site and are open<lb />
for anyone to access.<lb />
The crime logs break down<lb />
the crime or alleged crime in<lb />
specific detail. It breaks down<lb />
the place, date and time the crime<lb />
or alleged crime took place.<lb />
It also list what the crime or<lb />
alleged crime is, and whether it<lb />
is has been closed or if it is still<lb />
under investigation.<lb />
In the crime log for 2006,<lb />
there are at least six alleged inci-<lb />
dents involving sexual assault,<lb />
rape or assault to a female that are<lb />
still under investigation.<lb />
The North Carolina State<lb />
Bureau of Investigation Division<lb />
of Criminal Information is also a<lb />
database that people can access<lb />
crime statistics.<lb />
Major Kevin Smeltzer of the<lb />
Greenville police department<lb />
said, According to the SBI We<lb />
site, ECU reported two rapes on<lb />
campus in 2005<lb />
"As for the crime stats they<lb />
can be very misleading unless<lb />
you know what you are looking<lb />
at and how they are accumulated<lb />
Smeltzer said.<lb />
Smeltzer says various<lb />
agencies classify crimes dif-<lb />
ferently for a wide variety of<lb />
reasons. Although rape is<lb />
classified uniformly across<lb />
the board, sexual assault<lb />
is more likely to be classi-<lb />
fied differently. How agencies<lb />
classify attempted rape and<lb />
aggravated assault varies widely<lb />
Students can go toecu.edupolice<lb />
to access both the crime campus<lb />
statistics and the crime logs.<lb />

Perks for law interns<lb />
(KRT) Jerry Taylor was<lb />
all nerves before he started his<lb />
summer internship at the Seattle<lb />
law firm of Garvey Schubert Barer.<lb />
He worried about the workload,<lb />
whether he would impress his supe-<lb />
riors, whether the other attorneys<lb />
would be tough on him.<lb />
As a 23 - year - old student<lb />
with two more years of law school<lb />
ahead of him, he was under a lot<lb />
of pressure.<lb />
But Taylor's anxiety melted<lb />
away when he arrived at the law<lb />
firm and was ushered into his<lb />
private office with sweeping views<lb />
of Puget Sound and a nameplate<lb />
on the door. The lunches, parties<lb />
and recreation trips that followed<lb />
helped, too.<lb />
"I love this company said Taylor,<lb />
a Seattle University student.<lb />
Welcome to the high-pressure<lb />
yet perk-filled world of summer<lb />
law internships, where firms<lb />
compete to lure "summer associ-<lb />
ates who can walk away with<lb />
$100,000-a-year job offers more<lb />
than a year before they graduate.<lb />
Every summer, law-school<lb />
students from around the coun-<lb />
try file into the hushed, high-rise<lb />
interiors of Seattle law firms for<lb />
what seasoned attorneys refer to<lb />
as a "12 week job interview<lb />
As in most major cities, dozens<lb />
of Seattle firms rely on this con-<lb />
stant succession of fresh brain-<lb />
power to build their permanent<lb />
ranks. The experience, by most<lb />
accounts, is part legal boot camp<lb />
and part social junket.<lb />
The programs allow students<lb />
to spend the summer writing<lb />
memos, doing legal research,<lb />
conferring with clients and soak-<lb />
ing up everything they can from<lb />
veteran attorneys.<lb />
Interns also devote a chunk<lb />
of their time lunching at Seat-<lb />
tle's top eateries, cruising the<lb />
region's waterways, trekking<lb />
to company retreats and tipping<lb />
back gratis martinis.<lb />
Contrary to the intern stereo-<lb />
type, summer law associates are<lb />
not treated as lowly hangers-on,<lb />
sent to pick up partners' dry clean-<lb />
ing or lattes.<lb />
Firms compete for top stu-<lb />
dents after meeting them on<lb />
annual recruiting trips at law<lb />
schools around the country. A<lb />
typical summer associate at a mid-<lb />
size Seattle firm earns the weekly<lb />
equivalent of $100,000 a year.<lb />
"It's a very exciting time<lb />
for the firm when the summer<lb />
associates show up. These are the<lb />
best from America's law schools<lb />
said Craig Miller, partner and<lb />
chair of the hiring committee<lb />
for the Seattle office of Davis<lb />
Wright Tremaine.<lb />
