College of Education receives grant<lb />
to aid librarian student recruitment<lb />
Community Oriented<lb />
Librarian Recruitment<lb />
Scholarship to benefit<lb />
CLAYTON BAUMAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The ECU College of Education<lb />
.was recently awarded an important<lb />
grant from the Institute of Museum<lb />
and Library Services.<lb />
According to a press release<lb />
distributed by the college itself,<lb />
the department of Library Science<lb />
and Instructional Technology was<lb />
awarded a $747,000 grant aimed at<lb />
funding the Community Oriented<lb />
Librarian Recruitment Scholarship.<lb />
The grant will be geared toward<lb />
finding a way of recruiting as many<lb />
potential school librarian students<lb />
into the program as possible by offer-<lb />
ing scholarships.<lb />
"There are a lot of studies show-<lb />
ing statistically that there's going to<lb />
be a very massive number of posi-<lb />
tions available within the next five<lb />
to 15 years said Dr. John Harer,<lb />
the graduate program director for<lb />
librarian sciences and co-director<lb />
developer of the scholarship program.<lb />
"And that's because a large<lb />
number of retirements, the librar-<lb />
More lilbrarians like Mark Sanders and Stacey Thompson will be needed for work in the next five to 15 years.<lb />
ians in all fields of librarianship are<lb />
experiencing an aging population<lb />
Harer said that the prediction is<lb />
that there is going to be a need for<lb />
between 20 and 30 thousand librar-<lb />
ians over the next fifteen years.<lb />
Currently, librarian schools<lb />
around America are only producing<lb />
about 12 to 15 thousand librarians to<lb />
fill those positions.<lb />
Harer noted how more urban<lb />
areas, such as Raleigh and Charlotte,<lb />
have dramatically increased pool of<lb />
people to recruit from as opposed<lb />
to more rural areas like Greenville.<lb />
"People want to move to those<lb />
communities where there are more<lb />
services, amenities and that sort of<lb />
thing said Harer.<lb />

Students urged to 'Plunge into Purple'<lb />
Weecs of Welcome begin<lb />
Auoust 18<lb />
RACHEL KING<lb />
NEWS EDITOR<lb />
Beginning a long jour-<lb />
ney can only be done by taking<lb />
that all-important first step,<lb />
or so students have been told<lb />
since the beginning of time.<lb />
This year, those first steps can<lb />
be taken in the right direction with<lb />
help from the brand new program<lb />
set to commence Aug. 18 at ECU<lb />
and run for the next eight weeks,<lb />
'Weeks of Welcome (WOW) also<lb />
known as 'Plunge into Purple<lb />
The program will feature an<lb />
extensive array of activities, rang-<lb />
ing from performances by The<lb />
Swash Improv group, which is an<lb />
acting troupe comprised solely of<lb />
ECU students, to informal din-<lb />
ners with some of the university's<lb />
professors, where students may<lb />
openly voice any concerns or ques-<lb />
tions to the people in the know.<lb />
The purpose of WOW is to assist<lb />
new students with the tougher<lb />
aspects of such a life-changing<lb />
event as starting college, such as<lb />
learning to find their way around<lb />
campus, finding out what pro-<lb />
fessors will expect from them,<lb />
sharpening study, time manage-<lb />
ment and leadership skills, along<lb />
with what is perhaps the hardest<lb />
thing of all: meeting new people<lb />
and becoming comfortable in a<lb />
brand new environment. When<lb />
a student is away from home for<lb />
the first time, he or she may find it<lb />
difficult to adjust, after all. By par-<lb />
ticipating in all the various types<lb />
of events, students may also learn<lb />
what it truly means to be a Pirate.<lb />
WOW will begin with a leader-<lb />
ship symposium and luncheon on<lb />
Aug. 18, followed by "an evening<lb />
of social activities" at Mendenhall<lb />
Student Center, according to<lb />
The Pirate Parent newsletter.<lb />
Day two will start with a mid-<lb />
morning swim party at the Stu-<lb />
dent Recreation and Wellness<lb />
Center, next to Mendenhall, and<lb />
progress into a late-afternoon<lb />
cookout between the two build-<lb />
ings. After that, students will be<lb />
able to enjoy other assorted activi-<lb />
ties in Mendenhall until 2 a.m.<lb />
Freshmen are encouraged to<lb />
attend the events on day three, Aug.<lb />
20, as Pirate Parent promises the<lb />
day to be "one of the most impor-<lb />
tant days of all The event that is<lb />
causing such a stir is the Freshmen<lb />
Convocation in Wright Auditorium<lb />
at 3 p.m. Chancellor Ballard, among<lb />
other top officials here at the uni-<lb />
versity, will be present to officially<lb />
welcome all students to ECU.<lb />
Afterward, students can<lb />
"Explore ECU in 3-D which<lb />
has been described as a "tri-<lb />
dimensional program based on<lb />
discover, design and delivery<lb />
Around 8 p.m everyone will<lb />
have the chance to relax and<lb />
laugh with The Swash Improv<lb />
Group and a headliner comedian.<lb />

Former ECU coach dies<lb />
ERIC GILMORE<lb />
SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
Former ECU baseball coach<lb />
Keith LeClair succumbed to amyo-<lb />
trophic lateral sclerosis late Monday<lb />
morning. LeClair lost his battle<lb />
with the incurable muscular dis-<lb />
ease, which is commonly referred<lb />
as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. He<lb />
died at his home with family and<lb />
close friends at his side.<lb />
The New Hampshire native<lb />
became the second-winningest<lb />
baseball coach in school history in<lb />
five seasons at ECU. He succeeded<lb />
Gary Overton as ECU's eighth Head<lb />
Coach in the summer of 1997 and<lb />
through 2002 compiled a 212-96-1<lb />
(.688) record<lb />
He led the Pirates to four straight<lb />
NCAA Regional appearances, three<lb />
Colonial Athletic Association cham-<lb />
pionships and one Conference USA<lb />
title. His 2001 club advanced to the<lb />
NCAA Super Regionals and finished<lb />
with a No. 11 national ranking after<lb />
registering a 47-13 mark.<lb />
He continued to coach during<lb />
the 2002 season despite learning he<lb />
had the disease during the previous<lb />
summer. Throughout the season,<lb />
his health declined, causing him to<lb />
lose weight and become frail.<lb />
By LeClair standards, thequad<lb />

footloose: The Musical"<lb />
July 25-29,2006<lb />
One of the most explosive movie<lb />
musicals in recent memory now bursts<lb />
onto the live stage. When Ren and<lb />
his mother move from Chicago to a<lb />
small farming town, Ren is prepared<lb />
for the inevitable adjustment period<lb />
at his new high school. What he isn't<lb />
prepared for are the rigorous local<lb />
laws, including a ban on dancing. The<lb />
ban is the brainchild of a preacher<lb />
determined to exercise the control<lb />
over the town youth that he cannot<lb />
command in his own home. When the<lb />
reverend's rebellious daughtersets her<lb />
cap for Ren, her roughneck boy friend<lb />
tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with<lb />
many of the locals eager to believe the<lb />
worst about the new kid. To the rockin'<lb />
rhythm of its Oscar-nominated top 40<lb />
score (the soundtrack album reached<lb />
number one on the Billboard charts<lb />
and has sold over 15 million copies!)<lb />
to which new, dynamic songs have<lb />
been added, Footloose celebrates the<lb />
wisdom of listening to young people,<lb />
guiding them with a warm heart and<lb />
an open mind.<lb />

SGA finalizes goals<lb />
More documents approved<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The legislative branch of SGA<lb />
approved additional documents and<lb />
made plans to finalize their last goals<lb />
5 for the summer.<lb />
According to Ben Wyche, the<lb />
 final goal of defining a funding<lb />
board will be initiated during next<lb />
e Monday's meeting.<lb />
Legislative members are cur-<lb />
rently coming up with ideas and<lb />
ways of getting this last goal accom-<lb />
plished before the conclusion of<lb />
summer congress.<lb />
The second goal, revising the<lb />
funding manual, is near its last<lb />
stages. The manual has been spilt<lb />
into two parts and been recon-<lb />
structed for better understanding.<lb />
Two documents were approved<lb />
in Monday's meeting which included<lb />
a congress motion sheet and an act<lb />
to enter the emergency funding<lb />
manual into the general statutes.<lb />
Both of these approvals were<lb />
made to produce better clarity when<lb />
dealing with funding issues.<lb />
Jon Massachi brought up the<lb />
issue for approval to the congress.<lb />
The branch also agreed to add an<lb />
author to the bill or resolution for<lb />
the motion sheet.<lb />
SGA also discussed adding the<lb />
emergency funding manual into the<lb />
general statues.<lb />
This included discussion about<lb />
getting approval status by the SGA<lb />
advisor, president and treasurer<lb />
before making a document official.<lb />
Theorganizationformally known<lb />
as GSAC will now be known as GSC<lb />
which stands for Graduate Student<lb />
Council. This was confirmed by M.<lb />
Cole Jones, student body president.<lb />
Wyche mentioned that GSC may<lb />
potentially provide funding for grad<lb />
uate students in the future but they<lb />
will continue to receive funding from<lb />
SGA until further changes are made.<lb />
One of the last issues discussed<lb />
in Monday's meeting were updating<lb />
the SGA Web site which is currently<lb />
in the process of being updated.<lb />
Jones encouraged congress<lb />
members to inform him about any<lb />
additional things they would like to<lb />
see on the Webs ite to represent SGA.<lb />

OPINION<lb />
editor@theeastcarolinian.com<lb />
SARAH BELL EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb />
In My Opinion<lb />
Green design could benefit ECU<lb />
Progressive energy<lb />
policies are key for a<lb />
growing school<lb />
EDMCKIM<lb />
PRODUCTION MANAGER<lb />
ECU is a decidedly growing<lb />
school, with the third largest student<lb />
population in the University of North<lb />
Carolina system. As the university<lb />
continues to expand to accommo-<lb />
date these students, its demand for<lb />
resources will continue to grow as<lb />
well. As these demands for resources<lb />
continue to grow, the demand for<lb />
new resources will increase as well,<lb />
but these resources are not unlimited.<lb />
New solutions will be necessary for<lb />
a clean transition into the future. I<lb />
think the most obvious solution to<lb />
this problem is utilizing the prin-<lb />
ciples of green design.<lb />
Green design is, at the surface,<lb />
anything designed with a certain<lb />
amount of sustainability. Using<lb />
recycled papers (and in turn, recy-<lb />
cling used papers), using inks that<lb />
are non-toxic and able to be recycled,<lb />
and using renewable energy sources<lb />
scratch at the surface of what green<lb />
design really is. At a deeper level,<lb />
green design is the ability to make<lb />
something that can sustain itself<lb />
long term and do so in a way that<lb />
is conscious (and conscientious) of<lb />
its impact on a community or an<lb />
environment.<lb />
An essential element of green<lb />
design is the conservation of energy,<lb />
water and other resources through<lb />
the use of renewable resources and<lb />
infrastructure (like solar panels<lb />
and recycling rain water). Creating<lb />
a successful infrastructure will be<lb />
essential to the university's expan-<lb />
sion. Green design opportunities<lb />
exist at all levels of development,<lb />
from materials that are non-toxic<lb />
and renewable and sustainable<lb />
(using recycled materials and recy-<lb />
cling materials), to less complicated<lb />
designs which need to be replaced less<lb />
often and require less maintenance.<lb />
Utilizing renewable resources is<lb />
something that is very important.<lb />
The benefits of using renewable<lb />
resources could help to move our<lb />
region (and ideally, our nation) to a<lb />
higher level of civilization.<lb />
Green Design, as an idea or move-<lb />
ment isn't particularly new if you've<lb />
been around the design industry for a<lb />
while, but as of recently, it has begun<lb />
to pick up some steam. Architects<lb />
are beginning to embrace the ideas<lb />
of Green Design, and probably have<lb />
been aware of these concepts for<lb />
some time. Ultimately, it's not up to<lb />
the designer to advance the move-<lb />
ment, it's up to the client. The client<lb />
needs to be willing to pay for these<lb />
advances (which, by the way have<lb />
a way of paying themselves back in<lb />
the long run).<lb />
More and more humans and<lb />
animals are dying each year due<lb />
to pollution. It's an inevitable fact<lb />
that the more pollution we create,<lb />
the more consequences we will<lb />
suffer. One way to limit pollution<lb />
here at the university would be to<lb />
upgrade our motor fleet, which ECU<lb />
has begun to do. Limiting green-<lb />
house gasses and pollutants preserves<lb />
the environment around ECU that<lb />
are being poisoned constantly by<lb />
careless people who feel it's easier<lb />
to stick with the status quo than to<lb />
make a legitimate change.<lb />
Some people would say ECU has<lb />
begun to embrace this movement. I<lb />
can agree they have taken steps in<lb />
the right direction, like using ethanol<lb />
fuels and beginning to build more<lb />
energy efficient buildings. I think<lb />
there is a lot of work left. My vision<lb />
of the ECU of tomorrow contains<lb />
autonomous structures, vehicles that<lb />
are using hybrid technologies and<lb />
systems that sustain and renew them-<lb />
selves. The university needs to utilize<lb />
natural and renewable resources,<lb />
build structures that respect nature<lb />
and use vehicles that do not pollute<lb />
our river and wetlands. ECU could<lb />
only stand to benefit from these<lb />
environmentally friendly technolo-<lb />
gies and practices.<lb />
The green design movement has<lb />
been lightly handled to say the least<lb />
at the government level. I mean,<lb />
when you got something that's<lb />
working, why change? .Not exactly.<lb />
What we have is working, but a new,<lb />
sustainable and equitable system<lb />
would work much better in this<lb />
changing world. ECU needs to accept<lb />
that sustainable infrastructures are<lb />
the key to a successful future for the<lb />
institution.<lb />
Quick action will always be pref-<lb />
erable to bureaucracy; however, the<lb />
state has a penchant for bureaucracy.<lb />
So that means now is the time to<lb />
get the ball rolling on a new, green<lb />
university infrastructure. The costs<lb />
might be magnificent at first, but the<lb />
savings in the long run will be inargu-<lb />
ably greater. The moral and environ-<lb />
mental benefits will always be greater<lb />
than the financial ones, but the<lb />
financial ones will be huge as well.<lb />
Lets look at some realities of<lb />
energy prices: oil prices are near-<lb />
ing $80 a barrel. Wars are being<lb />
fought over oil interests; traditional<lb />
industries and resources are just not<lb />
worth the prices (environmental,<lb />
financial, physical and political)<lb />
that we are paying and they are too<lb />
substantial to ignore. Electric lighting<lb />
is expensive and relatively unneces-<lb />
sary if you design around it and<lb />
use sunlight as your main source of<lb />
energy. Water could be recycled, and<lb />
rainwater could be collected and re-<lb />
used instead of city water. All these<lb />
things are not only possible they are<lb />
plausible.<lb />
Alternative sources of energy and<lb />
environmentally conscious design<lb />
are at the roots of tomorrow's tech-<lb />
nology. If tomorrow really does "start<lb />
here" at ECU, we need to upgrade our<lb />
industrial practices and step into the<lb />
forefront of environmentally con-<lb />
scious development.<lb />

I know no one understands it, but<lb />
I have been so bored this summer<lb />
I want school to start again.<lb />
I love that I get as many DVDs<lb />
mailed to me as I can possibly watch<lb />
for one set amount every month.<lb />
Don't you hate flaky opinion writers?<lb />
Why is it that you can only be<lb />
someone's hero if you find what<lb />
he or she needs in a 15 hour time<lb />
range? I mean I have tried to find<lb />
it, but give me a little more time<lb />
next time please!<lb />
Greenville needs to build a bubble<lb />
over the whole city to control the<lb />
temperature. Wouldn't it be nice if it<lb />
weren't so hot and humid all summer?<lb />
Why are certain parking lots<lb />
chained so that no one can park<lb />
there? If I've paid for a parking<lb />
pass for that particular lot then I<lb />
want to park there! The true axis<lb />
of evil is not N. Korea and Iran, it's<lb />
the ECU parking gurus and the<lb />
tow truck companies! I hate you!<lb />
Thank you, I feel somewhat better<lb />
now. Not really.<lb />
Does anyone find it ridiculous that<lb />
networks send their best anchors<lb />
to war zones?<lb />
Where is Suri Cruise? I am begin-<lb />
ning to think she doesn't really exist.<lb />
I shower every other day and shave<lb />
maybe once a week or so. Or is it<lb />
the other way around? Hard to say,<lb />
it's been a while. Is that a problem<lb />
you think? Oh yeah, sometimes I<lb />
forget to brush my teeth. I do, how-<lb />
ever, use deodorant. Sometimes.<lb />
Wanna be roomies?<lb />
Yeah, so I understand the purpose of<lb />
cleaning the bathrooms daily but I<lb />
don't understand why you have to<lb />
close our particular bathroom every<lb />
afternoon for four hours straight. I<lb />
would understand this better if you<lb />
actually cleaned the showers every<lb />
day or did something that actually<lb />
took a long time to do. So please,<lb />
clean the bathrooms in Cotten but<lb />
please don't close ours off all after-<lb />
noon because the other bathroom is<lb />
way dirtier and nastier than ours. Oh<lb />
yeah, please clean the showers more<lb />
often too. Thanks!<lb />
I got a digital camera as a present<lb />
and you would think that I would<lb />
have nice group shots because you<lb />
can retake pictures if they aren't<lb />
good. But no, most of my pictures<lb />
still have closed eyes or goofy<lb />
looks, what gives?<lb />
Come here with an open mind.<lb />
Attend class regularly. Read and study.<lb />
Do well. Commit yourselves to suc-<lb />
cess. Or go home. No sense in wast-<lb />
ing your time and ours. Good luck.<lb />
I really hope that future columns<lb />
by Dustin B. Pittman will not be<lb />
littered with sentences ending in<lb />
prepositions. Have you taken Eng-<lb />
lish 1100? It is really annoying.<lb />
I work in the dining hall and it's a<lb />
pain to clean up. Why can't you<lb />
just clean up after yourself.<lb />
Hey! Keep your eyes on your own<lb />
paper!<lb />
Ew don't be "that guy" who sticks<lb />
his head out of his car window<lb />
and takes a double look when I am<lb />
walking on the sidewalk.<lb />
I don't care if you're blow drying or<lb />
vacuuming over there, but please<lb />
stop doing it at 1:30 a.m<lb />
I hate when I am outside all day<lb />
and even with two different times<lb />
of putting on sunscreen, I get sun-<lb />
burned. Why is it so hard to find<lb />
sunscreen that work well?<lb />
I am having beach-withdrawal. I<lb />
need to go back A.S.A.P<lb />
How did we live when we only had<lb />
house phones to talk to each other?<lb />

ZACH STEPHENSON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
I was sophomoric enough to<lb />
believe Owen Wilson blunt-slid<lb />
that handrail in the old Yeah Right!<lb />
skate video. To pile on more embar-<lb />
rassment, I was bummed out all day<lb />
after the extra features unveiled the<lb />
true assailant.<lb />
That might be slightly embel-<lb />
lished, but it holds some truth.<lb />
Wilson has a weird, stranded puppy<lb />
appeal that hypnotizes you into<lb />
hoping for his success. But the<lb />
Russo brothers' bid to swill Wilson's<lb />
attribute into two hours of gold<lb />
seems crafted more along the lines<lb />
of Criss Angel than P.T. Barnum.<lb />
The film follows Carl Peterson<lb />
(Matt Dillon) through discrepant<lb />
relationships between his newly-<lb />
wed wife, Molly (Kate Hudson), her<lb />
dad (Michael Douglas) and Dupree<lb />
(Wilson). Instead of developing<lb />
these bonds beyond a periphel<lb />
glimpse, the film quickly puts all<lb />
eyes on Dupree.<lb />
When the Russo brother's<lb />
piloted the Arrested Development<lb />
series, they won critical acclaim<lb />
for juggling dysfunctional rela-<lb />
tionships into a whimsy melee.<lb />
The show focused on a handful of<lb />
quirky characters, but was able to<lb />
interconnect and draw humor from<lb />
their clashes.<lb />
You, Me and Dupree attempts the<lb />
same brand of situational comedy,<lb />
but swaps wit for predictable pos-<lb />
ture. After Dupree forgets to tell his<lb />
boss he took some days off to attend<lb />
Peterson's wedding, he gets fired<lb />
and moves in with the Petersons.<lb />
His mishaps become too much to<lb />
handle and he is eventually given<lb />
the boot. When the Petersons' find<lb />
out he has nowhere to go (again<lb />
- the stranded puppy appeal),<lb />
they bring him back in, where he<lb />
changes and eventually saves their<lb />
relationship. Substitute Wilson for<lb />
Brandon Frazier and we have Encino<lb />
Man II.<lb />
It's cliche to say that Hollywood<lb />
is running out of ideas, but like a<lb />
drunken shoplifter, You, Me and<lb />
Dupree steals a scene straight from<lb />
the pro shop of Happy Gilmore. It<lb />
switches Sandler's paranoid dream<lb />
of Shooter and his girl for one<lb />
Permanent guest Dupree relaxes with newlyweds Molly and Cart in the summer comedy You, Me and Dupree.<lb />
of Dupree and Molly. It's smart<lb />
to throw in some scenes of the<lb />
proclaimed "band-aid" wearing a<lb />
skimpy swimsuit, but at least do it<lb />
with some principle.<lb />
Ironically, the Russo broth-<lb />
ers fail at the technique that put<lb />
them on the map. Then again,<lb />
Arrested Development's run dis-<lb />
jointed quicker than Dillon's nine-<lb />
iron in Drugstore Cowboy. And from<lb />
the looks of it, You, Me and Dupree<lb />
is going to be a summer hit. In the<lb />

it is easy to see the hints drop-<lb />

Can you spot some characteristics of a trophy wife in the woman above?<lb />
that any lady who only dons pastels<lb />

SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Let me be the first to admit that<lb />
this summer I had planned to get into<lb />
shape, but with a hectic work sched-<lb />
ule it seems that I barely had time<lb />
to brush my teeth, much less work<lb />
out and plan healthy meals. How-<lb />
ever, with a month of summer left<lb />
before school starts back, I still have<lb />
time to devote to my fitness goals.<lb />
The first step to becoming<lb />
healthier is attempting to eat<lb />
healthier. It's always tempting to<lb />
stop by Krispy Kreme when the<lb />
"Hot Now" sign is lit up, but eating<lb />
sweets will not satisfy your hunger<lb />
and in the long run you will end<lb />
up gaining weight. When you are<lb />
craving a snack try some fruit or<lb />
grab one of my favorites, the new<lb />
"100 Calorie Packs<lb />
Many people believe that skip-<lb />
ping out on breakfast will help<lb />
them lose weight, but the truth is<lb />
quite the contrary. When you skip<lb />
out on breakfast your body will<lb />
need more food by the time you eat<lb />
lunch. So, rather than overeating at<lb />
lunch, grab a light breakfast such as<lb />
a bagel or toast with fruit to get your<lb />
metabolism going for the day.<lb />
When it comes to eating healthy<lb />
the rules are pretty simple, follow<lb />
your food guide pyramid. Eating<lb />
more grains, fruits and vegetables<lb />
will fill you up for a longer period of<lb />
time. As always, remember to that<lb />
portion control is key when eating<lb />
meats and sweets.<lb />
As far as working out, pretty<lb />
much anything goes. You can go<lb />
for a run around your neighbor-<lb />
hood, ride your bike to class, take<lb />
the stairs rather than the elevator<lb />
or park at the end of the parking lot<lb />
when you go shopping. No matter<lb />
how you get it, exercise is a key<lb />
ingredient to getting fit.<lb />
If you enjoy more structured<lb />
workouts, heading over to the Stu-<lb />

your speed. The SRC offers tons<lb />
of workout equipment, an indoor<lb />

a climbing wall. At the SRC you can<lb />

So if you make contact with a<lb />
pretty girl drinking a vodka-pine-<lb />
apple with big pearl studs in her<lb />
ears, follow these simple steps to<lb />
extract yourself should she get a<lb />
fervent grip on your wallet.<lb />
First, inform her that you own<lb />
a Tag watch. If she stares blankly<lb />
at you, then you are in the clear. If<lb />
she asks you why you don't own a<lb />
Rolex, run fast.<lb />
If you start discussing common<lb />
interests and the topic of golf is<lb />
broached, deny having any knowl-<lb />
edge of the Masters or who Phil<lb />
Mickelson is. Golf has always been<lb />
a sport synonymous with money<lb />
and feigning ignorance will make<lb />
you seem "common" in her eyes.<lb />
Despite how much time these<lb />

ERIC GILMORE SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
Coach LeClair leaves lasting legacy at ECU<lb />
LeClair survived by wife,<lb />
two children<lb />
ERIC GILMORE<lb />
SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
Even in death, Keith LeClair's<lb />
legacy will live on.<lb />
A stadium bears his name. Hall<lb />
of fames don his plaques. A round<lb />
robin tournament provides a stage<lb />
for big time college baseball.<lb />
The stadium is a brick-by-brick<lb />
metaphor of the foundation he<lb />
built at the helm of ECU's baseball<lb />
team. Both the ECU and Western<lb />
Carolina University Hall of Fames<lb />
display the hard work and passion<lb />
he put in as both a player and coach.<lb />
Like his teams, the tournament puts<lb />
Greenville in the national spotlight.<lb />
At the end, it didn't matter. Nei-<lb />
ther did LeClair's body, which slowly<lb />
failed him over the five years that he<lb />
was inflicted with amyotrophic lat-<lb />
eral sclerosis, better known as ALS<lb />
or Lou Gehrig's disease.<lb />
What did matter were his faith,<lb />
his mind and his family. Three<lb />
things, a trinity if you will, that<lb />
. never failed him.<lb />
"The experience of the disease<lb />
caused him to go a bit deeper in his<lb />
faith and to look inward and think<lb />
about what's important in life said<lb />
Oakmont Baptist Pastor Greg Rogers.<lb />
"He decided that family and<lb />
faith was number one and every-<lb />
thing else would come second<lb />
LeClair had been unable to<lb />
communicate since his eyes dete-<lb />
riorated in October from using his<lb />
laser eye technology. Even his wife<lb />
Lynn, who is described as a "saint"<lb />
by Rogers, lost the ability to speak<lb />
with her husband.<lb />
"Most people are<lb />
defined by what<lb />
they do in terms<lb />
of wins, honors,<lb />
accomplishments<lb />
Keith is defined by<lb />
the way he lived his<lb />
life<lb />
TODD RALEIGH<lb />
WCU HEAD COACH<lb />
"It all comes back to faith said<lb />
Joseph Hastings, a former ECU player<lb />
who is one of six college assistant<lb />
coaches that played under LeClair.<lb />
"They took the situation and<lb />
used it as an opportunity to reach<lb />
out to people.<lb />
On Father's Day, there was<lb />
LeClair sitting in his power chair<lb />
worshiping at the Oakmont Baptist<lb />
Church watching his only daughter,<lb />
Audrey, sing a musical solo.<lb />
"He didn't have to say anything<lb />
to be an inspirational type of figure<lb />
for people Rogers said.<lb />
"His presence in our worship<lb />
service was something that touched<lb />
people deep within their hearts<lb />
Still, LeClair kept fighting. And<lb />
through his five-year battle, he<lb />
got to treasure moments with his<lb />
children as they grew. Little things,<lb />
like baseball games and Sunday<lb />
afternoons were experiences he pre-<lb />
served as sand piled in his hourglass.<lb />
"These last five years have been<lb />
a real gift for Keith in respect to<lb />
his children because he was able to<lb />
watch them grow Rogers said.<lb />
He got to watch the dedication<lb />
of the stadium that bears his name.<lb />
He helped to raise money for ECU<lb />
athletics and ALS awareness. He<lb />
wrote devotionals to family and<lb />
friends. Through it all, LeClair was<lb />
happy and at peace.<lb />
"Most people are defined by<lb />
what they do in terms of wins,<lb />
honors, accomplishments and<lb />
things like that WCU head coach<lb />
Todd Raleigh said, a former team-<lb />
mate and assistant coach.<lb />
"Keith is defined by the way he<lb />
lived his life. He put his family and<lb />
religion first and did everything else<lb />
after that the right way<lb />

Mark Wharton settles in as new Pirate Club Director<lb />
Wharton returns for<lb />
"dream job'<lb />
RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
So often we hear of former play-<lb />
ers returning to their alma mater<lb />
to coach. Mark Wharton graduated<lb />
from ECU in 1993 and has returned<lb />
to Greenville as the new Executive<lb />
Director of the Pirate Club. Whar-<lb />
ton, who assumed his new duties<lb />
July 17, didn't play sports at ECU,<lb />
but his mark on campus was there<lb />
even when he wasn't and his return<lb />
is something special.<lb />
"It's amazing being back - how<lb />
many of the same faces and a lot<lb />
of phone calls congratulating and<lb />
saying hello Wharton said.<lb />
"It's kinda weird. Not a lot has<lb />
changed. I left here in 2000 and I told<lb />
" everyone that my dream job would<lb />
be back in this capacity. I thought it<lb />
would come down the road when I<lb />
was 55 or something, but it's more of<lb />
an honor and privilege now<lb />
Wharton obtained his bachelor's<lb />
degree in leisure studies with a con-<lb />
centration in community and com-<lb />
mercial recreation from ECU in 1993<lb />
before adding a master's in human<lb />
ecology with an emphasis in sport<lb />
management from the University of<lb />
Tennessee in 1995.<lb />
This is Wharton's second stint<lb />
with the Pirate Club. In 1996, he<lb />
returned to Greenville as the Club's<lb />
assistant director - a position he<lb />
held for four years. During that time,<lb />
Wharton led a campaign to revamp<lb />
the athletic department's facilities.<lb />
He was responsible for the develop-<lb />
ment of 17 Pirate Club chapters in<lb />
North Carolina, South Carolina and<lb />
Georgia. In addition to identifying<lb />
members for annual campaigns, he<lb />
qualified individuals and businesses<lb />
for ECU'S "Kick-off To Victory"<lb />
campaign to raise $10.5 million for<lb />
the construction of the Pirates' new<lb />
strength and conditioning building,<lb />
later named the Murphy Center.<lb />
Wharton also played an active role<lb />
directing othe Young Graduate Cam-<lb />
paign and Student Pirate Club while<lb />
coordinating parking and seating<lb />
assignments for games.<lb />
"We are fortunate to have some-<lb />
one of Mark's capability who also<lb />
brings a wealth of experience to<lb />
this job Pirate Club President John<lb />
Hudson said in May.<lb />
"He developed his foundation at<lb />
ECU and will bring a passion back to<lb />
the Pirate Club<lb />
Wharton's most recent posi-<lb />
tion was associate director of<lb />
athletics for development at the<lb />
University of Nevada-Las Vegas<lb />
for the past two years, where he<lb />
headed all development and fund-<lb />
raising activities for the Rebels'<lb />
intercollegiate athletics program.<lb />
"We are thrilled to welcome Mark<lb />
back to the Pirate family said Terry<lb />
Holland, ECU athletic director.<lb />
"His experience, institutional<lb />
knowledge and vision will serve our<lb />
fund-raising efforts very well for<lb />
years to come<lb />
Wharton served as the Associ-<lb />
ate Athletics Director for External<lb />
Affairs at UNC-Asheville from 2003<lb />
to 2004. Prior to that, he spent three<lb />
years at James Madison University<lb />
as Director of the Duke Club. The<lb />
37-year-old father of two began his<lb />
professional career while a student at<lb />
ECU, earning an appointment as the<lb />
Kinston Indians' Director of Regional<lb />
Marketing in January of 1991.<lb />
"Mark is a Pirate and therefore<lb />
understands the mission and vision<lb />
for ECU as a university and as an ath-<lb />
letic department Holland said.<lb />
"He is a good fit yet also has an<lb />
extensive and varied background<lb />
in fundraising at different types of<lb />
institutions in different parts of the<lb />
country. Mark's experience here in<lb />
the Pirate Club in the late 90s, at<lb />
James Madison, UNC-Asheville and<lb />
UNLV provide him with the ideal<lb />
foundation for leading the Pirate<lb />
Club into a new era. He respects and<lb />
understands the great job the Pirate<lb />
Club has done for ECU Athletics over<lb />
these many years and he brings new<lb />
ideas and proven concepts that can<lb />
help us be even more competitive<lb />
over the next decade<lb />
Wharton has the future on his<lb />
mind, to reward the long-time support-<lb />
ers of the Pirates while continuing to<lb />
emphasize growth of the Pirate Club.<lb />
"We've got to grow our base and<lb />
for those long-time supporters, we've<lb />
got to move them up the ladder<lb />
Wharton said.<lb />
"We have to continue our facility<lb />
improvements and build our endow-<lb />
ment. Ten years ago, they were talk-<lb />
ing about having $10 million, now<lb />
we're pushing for $20 million. We<lb />
can't settle with where we are<lb />

LeClair watched his team defeat<lb />

along the foul line to capture his<lb />
only C-USA tournament crown.<lb />
After making the final out, the<lb />
team doused his vehicle in cel-<lb />
ebration. The act, done spontane-<lb />
ously, was a symbol of the respect<lb />
mutual respect between he and<lb />
his players.<lb />
He was inducted into the ECU<lb />
athletic hall of fame in 2002 and<lb />
was honored as the first recipient<lb />
of the C-USA Student-Athlete Advi-<lb />
sory Committee's (SAAC) Coaches<lb />
Choice Award. In addition, the<lb />
C-USA Baseball Coach of the Year<lb />
Award is named in his honor.<lb />
He won the American Baseball<lb />
Coaches Association's East Region<lb />
Coach-of-the-Year award in both<lb />
1999 and 2001. During his col-<lb />
legiate baseball career as a player,<lb />
assistant coach and head coach at<lb />
Western Carolina and ECU, LeClair<lb />
was a part of 13 NCAA Tournament<lb />
teams and earned five conference<lb />
coach-of-the-year awards.<lb />
LeClair played at WCU under<lb />
current Clemson head coach Jack<lb />
Leggett. LeClair was an All-South-<lb />
ern Conference selection in 1988<lb />
while earning SoCon Tournament<lb />
MVP honors the same season. The<lb />
former walk-on also established<lb />
Catamount records for hits and<lb />
total bases in a season. He was<lb />
inducted into the WCU athletic<lb />
hall of fame in 2002 and his jersey<lb />
was recently retired.<lb />
LeClair signed a minor league<lb />
contract with the Atlanta Braves<lb />
after finishing his collegiate career.<lb />
After a spring training stint with<lb />
the San Francisco Giants in 1989,<lb />
he was offered a student assistant<lb />
coaching position at WCU. At<lb />
WCU, he had a 229-135-2 (.628)<lb />
record while winning four South-<lb />
ern Conference championships<lb />
and advancing to NCAA regional '<lb />
play four times.<lb />
The funeral service will be held<lb />
on Friday, July 21 at 2 p.m. at Oak-<lb />
mont Baptist Church in Greenville.<lb />
The family will receive friends on<lb />
Thursday evening between 5 and<lb />
8 p.m. at S.G. Wilkerson and Sons<lb />
Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers,<lb />
the family has requested that dona-<lb />
tions be made to the ALS Founda-<lb />

LeClair is survived by his wife,<lb />
