College Hill suites set to debut<lb />

STAFF WRITER<lb />
College Hill and Campus<lb />
Living are primed to open up the<lb />
new College Hill Suites for busi-<lb />
ness in the coming weeks.<lb />
The five-story building will<lb />
offer students some added perks<lb />
from the traditional dorms at<lb />
ECU. Designed for returning stu-<lb />
dents, the dorm is intended for<lb />
those who enjoy the closely-knit<lb />
community that is dorm life.<lb />
Campus Living is not trying<lb />
to phase out incoming freshmen.<lb />
Instead, they feel that these stu-<lb />
dents should live in the traditional<lb />
dorm setting, where there is a<lb />

New nursing building nears completion<lb />
Building will allow for<lb />
more enrollment<lb />
CHRISTOPHER STEVENSON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
A new building often symbol-<lb />
izes a new and better future. The<lb />
same can be said for the new,<lb />
high-tech nursing building, which<lb />
should be ready for classes this<lb />
fall at ECU.<lb />
The Brody School of Medicine<lb />
is a top of the line medical school<lb />
and is considered one of the best<lb />
academic medical centers in<lb />
North Carolina.<lb />
The Brody Medical Sciences<lb />
Building was built next to Pitt<lb />
County Memorial Hospital in<lb />
1982, yet the nursing school,<lb />
which represents an important<lb />
aspect of medical learning, was<lb />
built quite a distance from the<lb />
medical science building.<lb />
The new nursing facility is<lb />
on the west campus area, in close<lb />
proximity to the Brody School of<lb />
Medicine and the Allied Health<lb />
Sciences School.<lb />
This proximity will allow<lb />
much more interdisciplinary<lb />
teaching, research and service.<lb />
This new nursing building<lb />
covers 84,000 square feet and is<lb />
connected to the School of Allied<lb />
Health Sciences and Health Sci-<lb />
ences Library buildings through<lb />
upper level walkways.<lb />
The buildings are separate at<lb />
the ground level, and open into<lb />
courtyard areas.<lb />
The new nursing building will<lb />
house meeting spaces to encour-<lb />
age studentfaculty interaction, as<lb />
well as high-tech clinical learning<lb />
labs, which are equipped to pro-<lb />
vide simulation learning across an<lb />
array of patient populations and<lb />
clinical problems.<lb />
These nine clinical labs will<lb />
create more space, allowing for<lb />
more people to enroll into the<lb />
nursing program, unlike the pre-<lb />
vious location for the school of<lb />
nursing, which had only one lab<lb />
SHEERER<lb />
The building features nine clinical labseight more than the older one.<lb />
and was not equipped for simula-<lb />
tion learning.<lb />
The difference in the number<lb />
of students that can be enrolled<lb />
per year and the advance tech-<lb />
nology used in the new building<lb />
will allow the nursing school to<lb />
become more efficient and suc-<lb />
cessful than ever.<lb />

The Fantasticks"<lb />
July 11-15<lb />
The original production opened on May<lb />
3,1960 at the Sullivan Street Playhouse<lb />
in New York's Greenwich Village<lb />
where it's still playing after 15,000<lb />
performances making The Fantasticks<lb />
is the longest-running musical in the<lb />
world! At the heart of its breathtaking<lb />
poetry and subtle sophistication is a<lb />
purity and simplicity that results in a<lb />
timeless fable of love that manages<lb />
to be nostalgic and universal at the<lb />
same time. With its minimal costumes,<lb />
small band and virtually non-existent<lb />
set, The Fantasticks is an intimate<lb />
show that engages the audience's<lb />
imagination and showcases a strong<lb />
ensemble cast.<lb />
footloose: The Musical"<lb />
July 25-29,2006<lb />
One of the most explosive movie<lb />
musicals in recent memory now bursts<lb />
onto the live stage. When Ren and<lb />
his mother move from Chicago to a<lb />
small farming town, Ren is prepared<lb />
for the inevitable adjustment period<lb />
at his new high school. What he isn't<lb />
prepared for are the rigorous local<lb />
laws, including a ban on dancing. The<lb />
ban is the brainchild of a preacher<lb />
determined to exercise the control<lb />
over the town youth that he cannot<lb />
command in his own home. When the<lb />
reverend's rebellious daughter sets her<lb />
cap for Ren, her roughneck boy friend<lb />
tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with<lb />
many of the locals eager to believe the<lb />
worst about the new kid. To the rockin'<lb />
rhythm of its Oscar-nominated top 40<lb />
score (the soundtrack album reached<lb />
number one on the Billboard charts<lb />
and has sold over 15 million copies!)<lb />
to which new, dynamic songs have<lb />
been added, Footloose celebrates the<lb />
wisdom of listening to young people,<lb />
guiding them with a warm heart and<lb />
an open mind.<lb />

Women undergo mercury testing<lb />
Contaminated fish a<lb />
cause for concern<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Twenty women from the<lb />
Greenville area were tested for<lb />
mercury contamination at the<lb />
Greenville Town Commons last<lb />
Thursday.<lb />
Mercury contamination is a big<lb />
concern for women in North Caro-<lb />
lina because the exposure can lead to<lb />
health complications with unborn<lb />
fetuses and breast-fed infants.<lb />
According to Melinda Pierson,<lb />
SELC communications manager,<lb />
women of chlldbearing age whose<lb />
bodies are contaminated with<lb />
mercury pass the mercury on to<lb />
their unborn fetuses.<lb />
The mercury that is passed<lb />
on to the fetus is a neuro-toxin,<lb />
which controls the way the brain<lb />
develops. The toxin can cause<lb />
mental retardation, lower IQs,<lb />
cognitive delays and slow motor<lb />
skills.<lb />
Men can also suffer compli-<lb />
cations if contaminated such as<lb />
having tingling in their fingertips,<lb />
decreased motor skills and cardio-<lb />
vascular problems.<lb />
These symptoms are normally<lb />
seen in men with high levels of<lb />
mercury in their system, according<lb />
to Pierson.<lb />
The exposure to mercury<lb />
stems from individuals eating<lb />
mercury contaminated fish.<lb />
Mercury is transmitted into<lb />
fish by power plants that pro-<lb />
duce large amounts of pollut-<lb />
ants that contribute to mercury.<lb />
About 70 percent of mercury<lb />
deposits in local waters are emit-<lb />
ted by local coal-burning power<lb />
plants. People that fish in these<lb />
waters are likely to catch fish with<lb />
mercury in them.<lb />
The state has issued adviso-<lb />
ries to warn people of mercury<lb />
contamination in certain fish.<lb />
According to Pierson, the number<lb />
of contaminated fish is growing<lb />
exponentially.<lb />
The largest fish advisory was<lb />
recently released by the state and<lb />
included 22 species of fish that are<lb />
unsafe for children and pregnant<lb />
women.<lb />
The advisory includes fish that<lb />
are commonly caught, including<lb />
may cause serious health concerns.<lb />
largemouth bass, canned white<lb />
tuna, South Atlantic grouper, king<lb />
mackerel and Spanish mackerel.<lb />
According to Pierson, in the<lb />
past, the common rule of thumb<lb />
was that fish that are more likely to<lb />
be contaminated with mercury were<lb />
larger fish because their skin tissue<lb />
could absorb the mercury better.<lb />
This mercury is now being<lb />

Driving with cell phone as bad as driving drunk, study says.<lb />
Cell phones cause<lb />
problems on the road<lb />
(KRT) Drivers who talk on<lb />
cell phones may be just as danger-<lb />
ous as those who drink.<lb />
That's the sobering conclusion<lb />
of a study published Thursday by<lb />
University of Utah researchers who<lb />
monitored 40 meaand women on<lb />
a driving simulator.<lb />
And drivers using hands-free<lb />

When they return the<lb />
following year, they will have the<lb />
opportunity to live in the new<lb />
dorm with an established com-<lb />
munity of friends that they met<lb />
the previous year in the other<lb />
dorms.<lb />
"It gives you a lot more com-<lb />
munity ties, but after that first<lb />
year, when people are really<lb />
settled into the institution, and<lb />
have their support network of<lb />
g friends and all that, we feel that<lb />
8 it's a more appropriate time<lb />
for students to get that addi-<lb />
 tional privacy they'd like said<lb />
Aaron Lucier, associate director<lb />
of Campus Living.<lb />
"We're very excited. When<lb />
you work on projects like this,<lb />
where really, the design and the<lb />
construction has been going on<lb />
from phase one to this, in terms<lb />
of looking at the building and<lb />
designing this phase and talking<lb />
with architects, it's really been a<lb />
four to five year process<lb />
According to Lucier, the dor-<lb />
mitory will be ready to live in<lb />
around July 24.<lb />
The building is unique in<lb />
many ways. The dorm expands<lb />
on the idea of a suite style of<lb />
living that can be seen in Scott<lb />
and Belk dorms, but does it<lb />
in a way that truly realizes<lb />
what a suite should be like.<lb />
Two student rooms branch off<lb />
of a kitchenette and a living room<lb />
area with a sofa.<lb />
Each student room has a pri-<lb />
vate bathroom, while the kitch-<lb />
enettes will each have a full size<lb />
refrigerator and microwave.<lb />
Each floor will have a kitchen<lb />
that is bigger than the kitchenette<lb />
in the rooms, for students who<lb />
have need of a stove or want to<lb />
make larger meals.<lb />
"The spaces do not really<lb />
feel like a residence hall, some<lb />
of them feel like a loft apart-<lb />
ment that you would see in<lb />
an urban area said Lucier.<lb />
Built to house 488 students,<lb />
the massive dorm cost approxi-<lb />
mately $32 million.<lb />
The building has been in design<lb />
and construction for five years.<lb />
Students can take comfort in<lb />
having access to two elevators<lb />
when dealing with the hassle of<lb />
moving in and out. There is even a<lb />
waiting list to live there this year.<lb />

There is no kind of known<lb />
treatment to rid the mercury from<lb />
your body once exposed to it.<lb />
The state is currently work-<lb />

restrict mercury, which should be<lb />
ready in the fall.<lb />
According to Pierson, the pro-<lb />
posal's terms didn't pose a strong<lb />
enough effect on controlling<lb />
mercury.<lb />
The Sierra Club has made<lb />
an effort to encourage them to<lb />
enforce stricter measures to control<lb />
mercury contamination.<lb />
The state also required power<lb />
plants to reduce the amount of<lb />
pollutants that contribute to smut<lb />

Stacks Act a few years ago. They<lb />
weren't required to reduce mercury,<lb />

to the public.<lb />
The Greenville Sierra Club<lb />
wants the public to be more<lb />
socially aware of how to avoid<lb />
mercury contamination.<lb />
According to Pierson, she still<lb />
has trouble identifying which<lb />
fish are safe because it's hard to<lb />
remember all the fish that are on<lb />
the advisory.<lb />
The advisory covers just North<lb />
Carolina. The trouble with decid-<lb />
ing if the fish is safe emerges when<lb />
you know which fish is on the advi-<lb />
sory but you realize that it came<lb />
from a different state or country.<lb />
Most people don't have<lb />
common knowledge about if there<lb />
are large amounts of mercury pres-<lb />
ent in waters outside of their state.<lb />
The Greenville Sierra Club and<lb />
the University of North Carolina<lb />
at Asheville have found through<lb />
various studies that approximately<lb />
one in five women in North Caro-<lb />
lina have high levels of mercury<lb />
in their body.<lb />

of mercury contamination, visit<lb />

SGA looks to complete<lb />
second summer goal<lb />
Revisions to the funding<lb />
manual<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
SGA has been working vigor-<lb />
ously to finish their second goal<lb />
for the summer: revising the fund-<lb />
ing manual.<lb />
The summer legislative branch<lb />
has put in a lot of time and effort<lb />
to make changes to the document<lb />
so that funding can be allotted<lb />
to student organizations more<lb />
efficiently.<lb />
The first draft of the emer-<lb />
gency funding manual has been<lb />
completed.<lb />
Further recommendations<lb />
for the manual will be made at a<lb />
meeting tomorrow night.<lb />
The legislative branch expects<lb />
to complete the remaining revi-<lb />
sions to the document by next<lb />
week.<lb />
After completing the emer-<lb />
gency funding manual, the SGA<lb />
will move on to their third and<lb />
final goal for the summer.<lb />
The last goal that the summer<lb />
branch will tackle is providing a<lb />
clear definition of what exactly a<lb />
funding board is and what respon-<lb />
sibilities and roles it has.<lb />
There are only two more meet-<lb />
ings left for the summer SGA. The<lb />
summer branch concludes their<lb />
meetings on July 24.<lb />
Despite the time restraints, the<lb />
branch seems ready to get started<lb />
on their final goal.<lb />
Students are encouraged to<lb />
come to the weekly meetings<lb />
held on Mondays in Mendenhall<lb />
Student Center, Room 14.<lb />

Driving from page 2<lb />
a direct blow at a popular pastime<lb />
that is taken for granted by millions<lb />
of multitasking drivers.<lb />
At any given moment during<lb />
the day, 10 percent of drivers on<lb />
U.S. roads are gabbing away on<lb />
their wireless devices, according to a<lb />
2005 estimate by the National High-<lb />
way Traffic Safety Administration.<lb />
Bad idea, said psychologist<lb />
Frank A. Drews, one of the Utah<lb />
study's authors.<lb />
"It's kind of almost unpredictable<lb />
how they are driving Drews said.<lb />
When using cell phones, drivers<lb />
had slower reaction times and more<lb />
accidents, and they drove incon-<lb />
sistently, sometimes approaching<lb />
other cars then falling back, he said.<lb />
Cellular industry officials<lb />
acknowledge that phones can<lb />
be a distraction but said there<lb />
are ways to use them sensibly.<lb />
It is unfair to single out phones,<lb />
said John Walls, a spokesman for<lb />
CTIAThe Wireless Association,<lb />
a Washington-based trade group.<lb />
"I think there are just a<lb />
multitude of distractions that<lb />
are out there Walls said.<lb />
"And by focusing on just<lb />
one, you're creating a false sense<lb />
of security among people<lb />
In another recent study by<lb />
the Virginia Tech Transportation<lb />
Institute, other distractions, such<lb />
as applying makeup and reading,<lb />
were found to be much more risky.<lb />
In the Utah study, both cell-<lb />
phone use and alcohol caused<lb />
participants to "drive" more errati-<lb />
cally over the simulated 24-mile<lb />
course, but in different ways.<lb />
Cell-phone users were involved<lb />
in more "accidents" and they took<lb />
about 70 milliseconds longer to<lb />
react when the car on the video<lb />
screen in front of them hit the<lb />
brakesa delay during which<lb />
a car traveling 55 mpn would<lb />
cover more than 5 feet of road.<lb />
When the drivers were drunk<lb />
with a blood-alcohol content of<lb />
.08they followed other cars more<lb />
closely and they braked 23 percent<lb />
more forcefully, a potential prob-<lb />
lem for motorists behind them.<lb />
They also had twice as many<lb />
close calls as they did when sober,<lb />
defined as stopping less than 4<lb />
seconds away from a collision.<lb />
The participants were given<lb />
a mixture of vodka and orange<lb />
juice. Their level of drunken-<lb />
nessequivalent to four drinks<lb />
in an hour on an empty stom-<lb />
ach for a 170-pound manwas<lb />
verified with a breath monitor.<lb />
By one key measure,<lb />
cell-phone users were even<lb />
worse than drunk drivers.<lb />
When talking on the phone the<lb />
drivers had three accidents, but when<lb />
they were drunk they had none.<lb />
The drivers also had<lb />
no accidents when they were<lb />
sober and not using phones.<lb />
Researchers said they<lb />
were surprised that the drunk<lb />
drivers were accident-free.<lb />
They urged people not to mis-<lb />
construe the results as suggest-<lb />
ing that drunk driving is safe;<lb />
there is no question it is not.<lb />

OPINION<lb />
editor@theeastcarolinian.com<lb />
SARAH BELL EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb />
In My Opinion <lb />
Thank you, Kim Jong-il<lb />
DUSTIN B. PITTMAN<lb />
OPINION COLUMNIST<lb />
Today, I'd like to take the time<lb />
to say "Thank You" to Kim Jong-il,<lb />
the communist dictator of North<lb />
Korea. It is because of him that I am<lb />
able to write this column this week.<lb />
Thank you, Kim Jong-il, for<lb />
proving to us that Ronald Reagan<lb />
was right on March 23, 1983 when<lb />
he told America of our need for the<lb />
Strategic Defense Initiative, code<lb />
named "Star Wars Your deci-<lb />
sion to develop and launch seven<lb />
intercontinental ballistic missiles<lb />
has shown us once and for all that<lb />
we need a ballistic missile shield<lb />
around the United States and our<lb />
allies. While I don't always concur<lb />
with President Bush, I praise him<lb />
today for his continuance of this<lb />
Reagan-era policy of protecting<lb />
our people. I hope one day our<lb />
allies in Canada and Mexico<lb />
will join with us so that North<lb />
America is fully protected from<lb />
powers in the world that wish to<lb />
destroy us. Without the ability<lb />
to shoot ICBMs out of the sky<lb />
before they are allowed to deto-<lb />
nate over our country we would<lb />
now be vulnerable to an attack<lb />
from communist North Korea.<lb />
Without Star Wars, we would<lb />
not be able tc enter into diplo-<lb />
matic means to deal with you; we<lb />
would be forced to act militarily.<lb />
Thank you, Kim Jong-il for<lb />
showing us that America's deci-<lb />
sion to pull back from above<lb />
the 38th Parallel was a bad deci-<lb />
sion. It is because of commu-<lb />
nist dictators like you that we<lb />
should have allowed our Marines<lb />
to push forward and continue<lb />
to win in Korea and spread<lb />
democracy across the Far East.<lb />
Thank you, Kim Jong-il for<lb />
shocking our allies in Japan. Thank<lb />
you for reminding them that it is<lb />
America, that bright light upon a<lb />
hill which allows for its security.<lb />
Thank you for proving that even<lb />
duds fired from your country can<lb />
reach not only to Japan, but also<lb />
over it. Thank you for showing<lb />
that your missile tests in 1998 were<lb />
not a joke. Thank you for putting<lb />
fire under the feet of the Japanese<lb />
so that they may lead UN discus-<lb />
sions with a force even greater<lb />
than that of the United States.<lb />
Thank you, Kim Jong-il for<lb />
awakening the United Nations<lb />
to the fact that the world is not a<lb />
happy place. Hopefully it will be<lb />
because of your actions that this<lb />
"world watchdog" will finally<lb />
evolve into the worldwide security<lb />
force that our former President<lb />
Woodrow Wilson envisioned<lb />
when he designed the League of<lb />
Nations. Thank You, Kim Jong-il<lb />
for letting the United Nations<lb />
know that there are insane leaders<lb />
like you who will stop at nothing<lb />
for a morsel of power. It is my<lb />
hope and sincere desire that when<lb />
we come to the table with North<lb />
Korea to discuss your desire for a<lb />
nuclear missile program that the<lb />
United Nations will act with all<lb />
the just force they can. I hope<lb />
that they will not allow you to<lb />
use your actions, which violated<lb />
agreements already made with<lb />
your country, to create a better<lb />
bargaining space in the world. I<lb />
hope the United Nations does not<lb />
concede to your desire for a weap-<lb />
ons program and it is my desire<lb />
that you will step away from the<lb />
table with international sanctions<lb />
which will help provide for the<lb />
security of our world.<lb />
Thank you, Kim Jong-il, for<lb />
awakening Russia to the fact that<lb />
even they with their former might<lb />
are no longer secure in their own<lb />
region. Thank you for bringing<lb />
them back to the realization that<lb />
America won the Cold War and<lb />
it is through our guidance and<lb />
leadership that the world will<lb />
remain secure. I hope your actions<lb />
will bring Russia to the table with<lb />
the same resolute determination<lb />
that America brings. I hope your<lb />
actions will help Russia, as well as<lb />
other nations of the world come to<lb />
the table with the desire to sanc-<lb />
tion your country for their actions.<lb />
Thank you, Kim Jong-il for<lb />
showing America where China<lb />
really stands. For many years our<lb />
country has "danced" with China<lb />
in the hopes that one day it will<lb />
fully open to American products<lb />
Chinese markets serving over one<lb />
billion people. For too long we<lb />
have made efforts to put our hand<lb />
in the Chinese cookie jar, while<lb />
sometimes overlooking the fact<lb />
that China still is a communist<lb />
country. We must act with the<lb />
best interest of the world in mind,<lb />
not the best interest of American<lb />
pocketbooks. Hopefully, we can<lb />
awaken China to the realization<lb />
that North Korea is not a country<lb />
they should be standing up for or<lb />
using their Security Council veto<lb />
for. Hopefully, they will join with<lb />
the other countries of the world in<lb />
issuing sanctions against North<lb />
Korea so that we may show the<lb />
other dictators of the world that it<lb />
is not okay to violate the rules of<lb />
the international community.<lb />
Thank you, Kim Jong-il for<lb />
showing us that Americans were<lb />
right in their outrage at North Korea<lb />
starting up their nuclear reactor.<lb />
While you claimed that it was in<lb />
a desire to provide energy to your<lb />
people, we can now understand<lb />
and fully see the true intent of that<lb />
nuclear program. Hopefully we will<lb />
not continue to turn a blind eye to it.<lb />
Finally, Kim Jong-il, I hope that<lb />
you will never have the ability or<lb />
the desire to show any being of the<lb />
world the true power of modern<lb />
nuclear weapons, and I hope that<lb />
you will never be allowed to.<lb />

I like summer sessions so much<lb />
better. The semester is shorter so<lb />
you knock out credits hours like<lb />
crazy. Also, the campus is much<lb />
quieter, much less congested.<lb />
Come fall, we'll have 20,000<lb />
people milling about, talking<lb />
on cell phones, oblivious to the<lb />

AARON BORREGO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
It Is time to venture into the<lb />
world of pirates and mythologi-<lb />
cal fantasy given to us by the new<lb />
movie, Pirates of the Caribbean:<lb />
Dead Man's Chest. This is the<lb />
second creation in the Pirates of<lb />
the Caribbean series brought to<lb />
us by Disney.<lb />
The movie stars the same<lb />
main players from the first<lb />
movie: Johnny Depp, Orlando<lb />
Bloom and the ever lovely Keira<lb />
Knightley.<lb />
Oddly enough, these actors<lb />
have great chemistry with one<lb />
another which translates pretty<lb />
well to the story unfolding on<lb />
screen.<lb />
This movie is the story of<lb />
Davy Jones and his army of sea-<lb />
phantoms to whom Jack owes<lb />
some sort of unpaid debt.<lb />
Always in trouble, Jack also<lb />
has to overcome the Kraken beast<lb />
which the power of the Dead<lb />
Man's Chest commands. The<lb />
mythological character of the<lb />
Kraken is basically a giant angry<lb />
squid capable of taking down<lb />
entire ships at one time.<lb />
As usual, pirates on the hunt<lb />
for their booty are bound to run<lb />
into some trouble, which is a fate<lb />
no different than that for these<lb />
pirate characters.<lb />
Johnny Depp is great as Cap-<lb />
tain Jack Sparrow or should 1 say,<lb />
he Is great doing an impression<lb />
of a famous guitarist from the<lb />
Rolling Stones. His acting alone<lb />
seems to be the highlight of the<lb />
humor and the movie for me.<lb />
Not to be completely outdone<lb />
Keira Knightley is as beautiful as<lb />
ever and pulls off the sexuality<lb />
of her character in this movie<lb />
quite well.<lb />
Orlando Bloom is just gar-<lb />
bage in my opinion. Seriously<lb />
though, he seems to be in the<lb />
cast just to attract females to<lb />
the theater, a role which Johnny<lb />
Depp does sufficiently. It is cool<lb />
to look confused all the time but<lb />
I think his village misses their<lb />
idiot very much.<lb />
There are some great moments<lb />
of comedy to lend a hand in this<lb />
movie although it seems that<lb />
they are far too spaced apart for<lb />
my liking.<lb />
This movie has some great<lb />
fight scenes and is scripted quite<lb />
well. It does seem that the movie<lb />
lacked some direction and forgot<lb />

LIZ FULTON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Peoplg always say it aftr theyt<lb />
see a movie like this: the book was<lb />
better than the movie. Keeping that<lb />
in mind, I refrained from reading<lb />
The Devil Wears Prada before going<lb />
to see it on the screen. I did not<lb />
want to have any expectations and<lb />
frankly, I just wanted to be thor-<lb />
oughly entertained on a Sunday<lb />
afternoon.<lb />
Having stated that, I have<lb />
no idea what the differences are<lb />
between the book and the movie,<lb />
and will therefore stay away from<lb />
that in my review.<lb />
Guys be warned, this really isn't<lb />
the movie for you (unless you have<lb />
a secret obsession with couture<lb />
fashion). This is the ultimate chick<lb />

Based on what I have read, The<lb />
Devil Wears Prada is based on author<lb />
Lauren Weisberger's experience<lb />

Concerts are neither the time nor the place to act like fools and possibly<lb />
ruin the show for everyone else like the students pictured above.<lb />
Spreadnecks. Deadheads.<lb />
Wayne-iacs. The musical acts that<lb />
possess a cult following know how<lb />
to keep their fans happy- they go<lb />
on tour every year.<lb />
As early as April, bands such as<lb />
Widespread Panic, the Dave Mat-<lb />
thews Band and Jimmy Buffett begin<lb />
their magical trek across the United<lb />
States delighting their fans with the<lb />
songs that made them so beloved<lb />
and teasing them with new ones.<lb />
There is so much anticipation<lb />
and excitement involved with the<lb />
purchase of tickets and the impend-<lb />
ing road trip associated with a<lb />
show. Packing up the SUV and<lb />
plotting the best way to get booze<lb />
into the amphitheater are just some<lb />
of the things to get accomplished<lb />
on the old to-do list.<lb />
The day of the show arrives,<lb />
and you're stoked to see the band<lb />
that has helped define your life.<lb />
You stake out your seat on the<lb />
lawn and you prepare for the great-<lb />
est three hours of your life. Then<lb />
all of a sudden, the most annoying<lb />
people on earth drop a blanket<lb />
down right beside you.<lb />
Who are these people? They are<lb />
definitely not true fans because if<lb />
they were, they would not be talk-<lb />
ing on their cell phones.<lb />
"Never call someone during a<lb />
concert and try to play the song for<lb />
them said notable WZMB radio<lb />
personality Jimmy Goose. "They<lb />
are not going to be able to hear it<lb />
anyway, and you're just distracting<lb />
the people around you<lb />
Furthermore, don't be "that<lb />
guy" that comes to a concert either<lb />
in a previous tour shirt or in the<lb />
current one. No one cares how<lb />
many shows that you've been to.<lb />
Wearing the shirt solidifies your<lb />
state as useless.<lb />
Another stereotype to stay away<lb />
from is the significant other that<lb />
has been dragged to the show. Pick<lb />
up your skirt and pretend to have a<lb />
good time because your girlfriend<lb />
will thank you later.<lb />
When attending a concert that<lb />
has a substantial fan base, take heed<lb />
to follow the rules of the herd. You<lb />
are in their world, and they can<lb />
spot a poser from a mile away. Do<lb />
not, I repeat DO NOT, sing along<lb />
to the songs that receive radio air<lb />
play. Most fans did not pay $50 to<lb />
hear your drunken renditions of<lb />
"Margaritaville" where you leave<lb />
out the lost verse and don't scream<lb />
"salt" incessantly.<lb />
I am proposing that the lawn<lb />
section be designated into multiple<lb />
sections. Dead center is reserved for<lb />
the real fans. These are the people<lb />
that know every song, every inside<lb />
joke and cheer manically at every-<lb />
thing the lead singer says.<lb />
The top right corner belongs<lb />
to the drunk idiots who only go<lb />
to shows to say that they went to a<lb />
show. I say they can all sway into<lb />
each other and throw punches until<lb />
they all self-destruct.<lb />
On the left side of the lawn is<lb />
where those of the more herbal per-<lb />
suasion should reside. They should<lb />
be close enough to the hard-core<lb />
fans so that they can enjoy their<lb />
natural refreshments. Remember,<lb />
not spreading the wealth is the<lb />
worst act one can commit at a show.<lb />
Many wise people have sang the<lb />
immortal words, "One good thing<lb />
about music when it hits you're<lb />
feeling no pain No pain indeed,<lb />
unless a hippie tramples your feet.<lb />

Priestly's assistant. She is told it is<lb />
the job "a million girls would die<lb />
for" because Priestly is the editor-<lb />
in-chief of Runway magazine, the<lb />
Mecca of all things fashion.<lb />
In the beginning Andy could<lb />
care less about working at Runway.<lb />
She dresses like a disheveled Gap<lb />
advertisement and endures com-<lb />
ments about her hair and being<lb />
(gasp!) a size six.<lb />
She has her close friends, a pre-<lb />
tentious lot who are slaving away at<lb />
their menial jobs and dreaming of<lb />
their Imminent success. Her boy-<lb />
friend Nate (played by Entourage's<lb />
Adrian Grenier) is working toward<lb />
landing a successful chef position<lb />
and loves her just the way she is.<lb />
She encounters Christian<lb />
Thompson (Simon Baker) a free-<lb />
lance writer who circulates effort-<lb />
lessly in this world and provides a<lb />
possible love triangle. There is also<lb />
Nigel (the fabulous Stanley Tucci)<lb />
who as Runway's fashion director<lb />
helps Andy into her transformation<lb />
as a savvy sophisticate.<lb />
As the movie progresses, it<lb />
becomes more about Andy's trans-<lb />
formation and induction into the<lb />
elite fashion world than about the<lb />
hassles of her tiber-demanding boss.<lb />
The Devil Wears Prada illus-<lb />
trates the sacrifices one must be<lb />
willing to take to advance and<lb />
the loss of the soul that results. As<lb />
Andy becomes better at her job,<lb />
she begins to drift from her friends<lb />
and into a world that is completely<lb />
obsessed with the surface of things.<lb />
It is a very well-done movie and<lb />
much of the credit goes to Meryl<lb />
Streep. Her performance as an icy<lb />
dictator keeps the whole movie<lb />
rolling and her brief moments of<lb />
vulnerability makes it impossible<lb />
to completely hate her.<lb />
As a female, I enjoyed this<lb />
movie immensely and had no feel-<lb />
ings of guilt spending my money<lb />
on a movie ticket. The clothes are<lb />
enough to make tomboys like me<lb />
drool and entertain the notion of<lb />
moving to New York and working<lb />
in fashion.<lb />
I did have one problem with<lb />
the movie. Throughout the movie<lb />
Andy is mocked for being a size six<lb />
and told that it was "the new 14<lb />
For much of the movie, she simply<lb />
shrugs it off, but as the movie nears<lb />
its end, she comments to Nigel<lb />
about becoming a size four.<lb />

weight monster.<lb />

E o o o<lb />
Couples like this never can tell.<lb />
The question that<lb />
everyone asks<lb />
MEREDITH STEWART<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Everyone can agree that love<lb />
is a wonderful and necessary feel-<lb />
ing, but since it can not be seen,<lb />
weighed or measured, no one can<lb />
really explain what it truly means<lb />
to be "in love Couples everywhere<lb />
tell each other, "I love you but<lb />
do they really know what they are<lb />
saying?<lb />
Love is a warm feeling that you<lb />
have for someone who you can<lb />
trust, talk to, turn to for support<lb />
and share common interests with.<lb />
Love does not care what someone<lb />
looks like, how much money one<lb />
has or what kind of car they drive.<lb />
Love should be unconf ined, sincere<lb />
and unselfish. If your partner can<lb />
be a part of your whole life, then<lb />
that is an indication of love. The<lb />
two of you should not have to hide<lb />
things or be deceitful towards each<lb />
other.<lb />
"I know that I love my girl-<lb />
friend because I have never been so<lb />
open and free to express myself like<lb />
I am with her. She makes me feel<lb />
comfortable and even if I have had<lb />
a bad day, just seeing her makes me<lb />
smile said James Daniel, sopho-<lb />
more criminal justice major.<lb />
True love is more a sense of<lb />
friendship and respect. When<lb />
you do not find yourself trying to<lb />
impress your partner, instead only<lb />
wanting their happiness and well<lb />
being, then you know it is love.<lb />
Putting your partner ahead of<lb />
yourself is the first step to express-<lb />
ing those feelings. Real love looks<lb />
past the imperfections and learns<lb />
to accept as well as appreciate<lb />
the little things. A deep respect<lb />
for another's individuality helps<lb />
create a bond between two people,<lb />
which cannot be changed. If you<lb />
love someone you want to know<lb />
what they hate, love, think and<lb />
believe. When love is in play faults<lb />
and weaknesses of the other person<lb />
are recognized and accepted. You<lb />
always want what is best for the<lb />
person you love; you know their<lb />
dreams and do nothing but show<lb />
support and encouragement to help<lb />
them achieve these things.<lb />
Many of these feelings can<lb />
come from a sense of infatuation<lb />
as well. How do you know if you<lb />
are infatuated with someone or<lb />
really love them? Infatuation is<lb />
like a form of madness, you are<lb />
consumed by your thoughts and<lb />
nothing else seems to matter. Your<lb />
life suddenly becomes wrapped<lb />
around another person and it is<lb />
hard to be without him or her.<lb />
Infatuation focuses primarily on<lb />
how the other person makes you<lb />
feel and what they can do for you.<lb />
I believe lust is mainly a physical<lb />
attraction that most people mis-<lb />

take for love. When two people<lb />

it was two people having a good<lb />

nection said Katherine Stewart,<lb />
junior English major.<lb />
Many of us are still too young to<lb />
fully understand the true meaning<lb />
of love. It is definitely an experi-<lb />
ence everyone should have and<lb />
fully appreciate. It is very difficult<lb />
to open yourself up and let your<lb />
emotions run wild or to throw your<lb />
heart out on the line for someone<lb />
else to take care of.<lb />
Making yourself vulnerable is<lb />
always a scary feeling, many fear<lb />
rejection or the fact that one day<lb />
the relationship may end and they<lb />
are left with their heart in a million<lb />
pieces. Once you find someone who<lb />
you can trust, who you can talk<lb />
to and know they will always be<lb />
there then that is the first signs of<lb />
someone who could possibly sweep<lb />
you off your feet.<lb />
Over time infatuation could<lb />
turn into love, but many people<lb />
split before they ever find out. Just<lb />
be careful who you trust and try<lb />
not to get hurt, but also keep other<lb />
peoples' feeling in mind. They are<lb />
probably just as nervous about a<lb />
new relationship or taking things to<lb />
"the next level" if they are already<lb />
in a relationship, so just remember<lb />
to live, love and laugh.<lb />

Defensive tackle Jay Ross' arms<lb />

The mammoth-sized Ross<lb />
had Just finished the Farmers'<lb />

the second annual Strongman<lb />
Competition at the Cliff Moore<lb />

The Farmers' Walk isn't as easy<lb />
as it sounds. The event consisted<lb />
of hauling 400 pounds, (a petty<lb />
200 pounds per arm) the length<lb />
of a football field. As Ross, who<lb />
won one of the two heats, figured<lb />
out, the first 50 yards are easy for<lb />
300-plus pound linemen. It's the<lb />
next 50 and especially the last 10<lb />
yards that are so taxing.<lb />
To get rid of individualistic<lb />

Ratner brings credibility to the<lb />
UFC, which has been trying to<lb />
prove it's a safe and serious sport<lb />
and one worthy of coverage.<lb />
Brazilian Royce Gracie, a Jiu-<lb />
jitsu master, helped start UFC in<lb />
1993. Back then, the no-holds<lb />
barred UFC was brutal, with fight-<lb />
ers using all sorts of now-banned<lb />
practices like head butting.<lb />
Fights were held in small<lb />
venues such as Indian casinos<lb />
and backwater towns. Liddell said<lb />
his first UFC fight was held about<lb />
eight years ago in Louisiana in<lb />
front of a couple thousand folks.<lb />
Liddell, a slugger with a devastat-<lb />
ing right hand, couldn't remember<lb />
the town.<lb />
"Somewhere in the middle<lb />
of nowhere said Liddell, who's<lb />
nicknamed "The Iceman<lb />
Ratner recalled watching CNN<lb />
in the 1990's while Ken Shamrock,<lb />
one of the UFC's biggest stars,<lb />
debated the organization's biggest<lb />
detractor, Sen. John McCain of<lb />
Arizona. After the show, Ratner<lb />
remembered thinking Nevada<lb />
would never allow the sport.<lb />
But it was Ratner, ironically,<lb />
who helped thrust the UFC into<lb />
the mainstream when he decided<lb />
the sport had to be regulated while<lb />
he was with the NAC. The commis-<lb />
sion approved the sport in 2001.<lb />
Out went bloody head butts<lb />
and other vicious blows that could<lb />
cause serious harm. In came a<lb />
skilled and conditioned fighter.<lb />
"The biggest miscon-<lb />
ception that I've seen is that<lb />
some people still think it's<lb />
anything goes and there are<lb />
no rules Ratner said. "These<lb />
guys are tremendous athletes<lb />
Still, the UFC struggled. The<lb />
deep pockets of Lorenzo and<lb />
Frank Fertitta, who bought the<lb />
UFC for $2 million along with<lb />
White, allowed the company to<lb />
stay afloat.<lb />

White said UFC almost folded<lb />
in 2003. But its fortunes began<lb />
to change with a reality show on<lb />
Spike TV called "Ultimate Fighter"<lb />
that has given UFC its biggest<lb />
stage, averaging 2.2 million view-<lb />
ers in its third season.<lb />
"Spike was a perfect fit for us<lb />
White said. "We know who we are<lb />
going after<lb />
The UFC's emergence as the<lb />
premier mixed martial arts sport<lb />
in the country and the show's<lb />
popularity have made Liddell and<lb />
other UFC stars wealthy.<lb />
That first fight in 1998 earned<lb />
him $1,000. Now Liddell makes<lb />
more than a1 million a year from<lb />
UFC bouts and lucrative sponsor-<lb />
ships. And he doesn't fight in<lb />
podunk towns. His last fight was in<lb />
Las Vegas in front of 12,000 people.<lb />
"I can't complain the 36-<lb />
year-old Liddell said. "The TV<lb />
show has helped us grow<lb />
For Spike, the series brought<lb />
in serious advertising dollars tar-<lb />
geting men between the ages of<lb />
18 and 34, the network's prized<lb />
demographic. Burger King, the<lb />
U.S. Army and Taco Bell are<lb />
among the advertisers.<lb />
Kevin Kay, Spike's general<lb />
manager, said "Ultimate Fighter"<lb />
was the network's highest-rated<lb />
program and biggest revenue<lb />
generator.<lb />
But like Ratner, Kay worried<lb />
whether UFC would repel advertis-<lb />
ing instead of attracting it, given<lb />
its violent image.<lb />
"There was a lot of con-<lb />
sternation he said. "Is it<lb />
gonna work? Are advertisers<lb />
going to run away from it?"<lb />
The reality show, along with<lb />
other UFC programming, has<lb />
allowed the UFC to create and<lb />
market its stars, the fighters who<lb />
will ultimately decide the compa-<lb />
ny's fortunes. Crowd pleasers such<lb />
as Chris Leben and Forrest Griffin<lb />
have become big draws.<lb />
"We've given them a huge televi-<lb />
sion platform, and we helped them in<lb />
their pay-per-view fights Kay said.<lb />
Company executives wouldn't<lb />
disclose what kind of audience<lb />
their pay-per-view fights are gen-<lb />
erating but they did say recent<lb />
numbers are at least comparable<lb />
to World Wrestling Entertainment<lb />
Inc. According to filings with the<lb />
Securities and Exchange Commis-<lb />
sion, the WWE had four events<lb />
that averaged 482,000 pay-per-<lb />
view buys in the fourth financial<lb />
quarter of 2006.<lb />
However, UFC's cable ratings<lb />
lag well behind the WWE broad-<lb />
casts on USA Network.<lb />
White thinks the UFC could<lb />
generate a million buys one day<lb />
very soon. Saturday's rematch<lb />
between Tito Ortiz and Sham-<lb />
rock, bitter rivals who starred in<lb />
the latest "Ultimate Fighter was<lb />
expected to tally more than a half<lb />
million buys the Mandalay Bay<lb />
hotel-casino in Las Vegas.<lb />
For the second time, Ortiz beat<lb />
Shamrock.<lb />
The fight sold out, with ring-<lb />
side seats fetching $750. About<lb />
12,400 people attended and tickets<lb />
generated a $3.5 million gate,<lb />
a far cry from Zuffa's first UFC<lb />
fight in Atlantic City that drew<lb />
less than 5,000 people, and a<lb />
$217,150 gate.<lb />
While UFC attempts to<lb />
conquer television, hurdles remain<lb />
in getting the sport legalized<lb />
across the country. In New York,<lb />
the UFC faces a difficult battle;<lb />
Gov. George Pataki opposes the<lb />
sport.<lb />
The Fertitta brothers have<lb />
poured millions into the UFC, and<lb />
they haven't seen a return on their<lb />
investment yet.<lb />
But the Fertittas aren't known<lb />
for their bad bets. They made a for-<lb />
tune with Las Vegas-based Station<lb />
Casinos Inc a Wall Street darling.<lb />

Thomas Wingenbach, Patrick<lb />

Two international gay athletic competitions to be held this summer<lb />
(AP) If gays want to play flag<lb />
football or darts, Chicago is the<lb />
place to be. If they are looking to<lb />
see how they measure up against<lb />
the best gay handball players or<lb />
are looking for a rousing game of<lb />
bridge, Montreal is the spot.<lb />
Four years after the last Gay<lb />
Games, there will be not one but<lb />
two international gay athletic<lb />
competitions this summer. In<lb />
Chicago, the Gay Games VII will<lb />
be held July 15-22. Then, from July<lb />
29-Aug. 5, Montreal will host the<lb />
first Outgames 2006.<lb />
The two nearly simultane-<lb />
ous events are the result of a<lb />
bitter dispute, primarily over<lb />
money and control, between the<lb />
Federation of Gay Games and<lb />
organizers in Montreal, where<lb />
the Gay Games originally were<lb />
slated to be held. That dispute led<lb />
the federation to move the Gay<lb />
Games to Chicago and prompted<lb />
Montreal to stage its own games.<lb />
There long has been concern<lb />
that holding two events would<lb />
hurt both by diluting the pool<lb />
of athletes and cost them money<lb />

because sponsors would choose<lb />
one at the expense, of the other.<lb />
But organizers of both events<lb />
say they're attracting plenty of<lb />
athletes.<lb />
About 12,000 are expected<lb />
in Chicago, and the Outgames<lb />
are expecting about the same<lb />
number to participate in the<lb />
games themselves, an inter-<lb />
national conference, or both.<lb />
"There are enough gay people<lb />
in the world to have (two) events<lb />
said triathlete Hector Torres, a<lb />
radio station promotions director<lb />
in Orlando, Fla.<lb />
The Gay Games and Outgames<lb />
will include about three dozen<lb />
events. Some are exclusive to one<lb />
city or the other (sailing in Chi-<lb />
cago, table tennis in Montreal)<lb />
but runners, swimmers, basketball<lb />
players, figure skaters, bicyclists<lb />
and others will compete at both<lb />
venues. Both the Gay Games and<lb />
the Outgames are open to gay and<lb />
straight participants.<lb />
Organizers of both events<lb />
say they have enough corporate<lb />
sponsorship and other finan-<lb />
cial support to lead them to<lb />
believe they won't lose money,<lb />
as have previous Gay Games.<lb />
"We are estimating about<lb />
100,000 will participate, volunteer<lb />
and spectate in some fashion said<lb />
Kevin Boyer, an official with Chi-<lb />
cago Games Inc a not-for-profit<lb />
group putting on the Gay Games.<lb />
"The economic impact (to Chi-<lb />
cago) will be $50 to $80 million<lb />
While some athletes have told<lb />
organizers they plan to compete<lb />
in both Chicago and Montreal,<lb />
many more are picking just one.<lb />
Sometimes the choice is all about<lb />
the individual sports. But there are<lb />
other considerations, such as con-<lb />
venience, cost and even patriotism.<lb />
Mark Tewksbury, co-president<lb />
of the organization staging the<lb />
Outgames, said he suspects all<lb />
those factors contributed to the<lb />
lower turnout of American athletes<lb />
in Montreal than he thinks there<lb />
would have been if the Gay Games<lb />
weren't being held in Chicago.<lb />
"That's where we got some sig-<lb />
nificant fall off said Tewksbury,<lb />
a swimmer who won three Olym-<lb />
pic medals for Canada, including<lb />
a gold medal in the 100-meter<lb />
backstroke at the 1992 Games in<lb />
Barcelona.<lb />
At the same time, he said,<lb />
"The international community<lb />
seems to be coming to Mon-<lb />
treal There are 109 countries<lb />
registered for the games, the<lb />
conference, or both, he said.<lb />
Triathelete Hector Torres will<lb />
compete in the Gay Games VII.<lb />
In Chicago, Boyer said com-<lb />
petitors from 61 countries have<lb />
signed up. But he acknowledged he<lb />
has heard of some athletes going<lb />
to Canada instead of Chicago<lb />
because of government policies in<lb />
the United States about issues such<lb />
as gay marriage.<lb />
"Certainly there are people<lb />
who have told us we love Chi-<lb />
cago, we love the gay community<lb />
in Chicago, but we cannot bring<lb />
ourselves to come to the United<lb />
States right now he said.<lb />
