Professor receives National Science grant<lb />
Biologist to study<lb />
millipedes<lb />
CLAYTON BAUMAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
ECU biologist Jason Bond studies the taxonomy and systematics of millipedes like the one shown above.<lb />
Gates moves to full<lb />
time philanthropy<lb />
Professor Jason Bond, a biolo-<lb />
gist at ECU, has been busy making<lb />
progress with three grants he<lb />
recently received from the National<lb />
Science Foundation. Bond has been<lb />
using the grants to aid his study of a<lb />
diverse array of different species of<lb />
millipedes from around the world.<lb />
The grant, dubbed the Partner-<lb />
ship for Enhancing Expertise in<lb />
Taxonomy, or PEET, allows Bond to<lb />
recruit graduate and undergradu-<lb />
ate students in updating or editing<lb />
information about millipedes.<lb />
"The idea is that there are a lot<lb />
of very understudied taxonomic<lb />
S groups, millipedesbeingoneof them,<lb />
where most of the expertise is either<lb />
dying off or retiring said Bond.<lb />
"The idea is that the National<lb />
Science Foundation is trying to<lb />

A new software architect<lb />
emerges at Microsoft<lb />
LEE SCHWARZ<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Bill Gates will begin<lb />
devoting his time to his philan-<lb />
thropic endeavors aimed at rid-<lb />
ding the third world of infectious<lb />
diseases. Gates will begin to phase<lb />
himself out of Microsoft's day-to-<lb />
day operations, while Microsoft<lb />
newcomer, Ray Ozzie, founder<lb />
of Groove Software, a company<lb />
that makes business collaboration<lb />
software, will succeed Gates as<lb />
chief technology officer. Micro-<lb />
soft bought Groove in 2005 pri-<lb />
marily to secure Ozzie's services.<lb />
Ozzie is renowned for his inno-<lb />
vation in the software world.<lb />
"We wanted the technology but<lb />
also we had wanted to work with<lb />
Ray for 20 years said Steve Ballmer<lb />
of the Groove acquisition.<lb />
Analysts hope that Ozzie can<lb />
restore Microsoft's reputation for<lb />
innovation. Microsoft still clings to<lb />
its virtual monopoly on operating<lb />
systems and office applications for<lb />
most of its profits.<lb />
The lack of innovation seem-<lb />
ingly came to a head when Micro-<lb />
soft shocked the business world by<lb />
delaying launch of its new operat-<lb />
ing system Vista. While Microsoft<lb />
remains ambitious, as the Vista<lb />
launch was widely believed to have<lb />
been delayed because its features<lb />
were felt to be more ambitious<lb />
than Microsoft had innovation to<lb />
implement.<lb />
Analysts believe that Ozzie will<lb />
be good for the job.<lb />
"It will be a very good thing<lb />
to have Ozzie in this role. He is a<lb />
very methodical person who sees<lb />
Bill Gates will step aside to let Ray Ozzie take the lead at Microsoft.<lb />
both the whole picture of a project<lb />
clearly and also understands how<lb />
to manage it efficiently said Tim<lb />
Bajarin of Creative Strategies.<lb />
Ozzie will have big shoes to fill<lb />
as the Microsoft visionary. Micro-<lb />
soft will have to continue moving<lb />
toward web-based applications<lb />
and away from software packages.<lb />
Though Ozzie is about the same age<lb />
as Gates it is widely felt that he can<lb />
bring a new focus while instilling<lb />
more discipline.<lb />
Bill Gates is the world's richest<lb />
man. There were hundreds of men<lb />
who were in Silicon Valley and<lb />
see GATES page 3<lb />
and graduate students in systematic<lb />
and taxonomy<lb />
According to the story in the<lb />
faculty and staff newspaper, Pieces<lb />
of Eight, Bond shares the grant with<lb />
Dr. Petra Sterwald. Sterwald works<lb />
at the Field Museum of Natural His-<lb />
tory in Chicago.<lb />
Bond is currently working with<lb />
two graduate students on the stud-<lb />
ies. The program is also intended to<lb />
encourage undergraduate students<lb />
to take part.<lb />
Bond points out that not only<lb />
taxonomy is being studied in<lb />
regards to the millipedes but sys-<lb />
tematics. He and his colleagues look<lb />
at the evolutionary relationships of<lb />
different millipede groups.<lb />
Bond and those involved<lb />
recently received some publicity<lb />
in his work with the rediscovery<lb />
of the millipede that has the most<lb />
legs. The species hadn't been seen<lb />
or collected since 1920. Discovered<lb />
in California, Bond is keeping the<lb />
exact location a secret so as not to<lb />

A Musical Fable of Broadway and<lb />
based on a story and characters of<lb />
Damon Runyon, this funny and romantic<lb />
comedy-considered by many to be the<lb />
perfect musical comedy-soars with<lb />
the spirit of Broadway as it introduces<lb />
us to a cast of vivid characters who<lb />
have become legends in the canon.<lb />
Everything works out in the end, thanks<lb />
to the machinations of Abe Burrows<lb />
and Jo Sweriing's hilarious, fast-paced<lb />
book and Frank Loesser's bright,<lb />
brassy, immortal score, which takes<lb />
us from the heart of Times Square to<lb />
the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even<lb />
into the sewers of New York City.<lb />
The Fantasticks"<lb />
July 11-15<lb />
The original production opened on May<lb />
3,1960 at the Sullivan Street Playhouse<lb />
in New York's Greenwich Village<lb />
where it's still playing after 15,000<lb />
performances making The Fantasticks<lb />
is the longest-running musical in the<lb />
world! At the heart of its breathtaking<lb />
poetry and subtle sophistication is a<lb />
purity and simplicity that results in a<lb />
timeless fable of love that manages<lb />
to be nostalgic and universal at<lb />
the same time. With its minimal<lb />
costumes, small band and virtually<lb />
non-existent set, The Fantasticks<lb />
is an intimate show that engages<lb />
the audience's imagination and<lb />
showcases a strong ensemble cast.<lb />
footloose: the musical"<lb />
July 25-29<lb />
One of the most explosive movie<lb />
musicals in recent memory now bursts<lb />
onto the live stage. When Ren and<lb />
his mother move from Chicago to a<lb />
small farming town, Ren is prepared<lb />
for the inevitable adjustment period<lb />
at his new high school. What he isn't<lb />
prepared for are the rigorous local<lb />
laws, including a ban on dancing. The<lb />
ban is the brainchild of a preacher<lb />
determined to exercise the control<lb />
over the town youth that he cannot<lb />
command in his own home To the<lb />
rockin' rhythm of its Oscar-nominated<lb />
top 40 score (the soundtrack album<lb />
reached number one on the Billboard<lb />
charts and has sold over 15 million<lb />
copies!) to which new, dynamic<lb />
songs have been added, Footloose<lb />
celebrates the wisdom of listening to<lb />
young people, guiding them with a<lb />
warm heart and an open mind.<lb />
North Korea preps new ballistic missiles<lb />
U.S. government increases<lb />
missile defense funding<lb />
LEE SCHWARZ<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The world's attention is on Iran.<lb />
Iran has announced its nuclear<lb />
aspirations while simultaneously<lb />
stating that it has peaceful electric-<lb />
ity-generated intentions.<lb />
North Korea has been as defiant<lb />
as Iran about nuclear tests and mis-<lb />
sile development, but has been quiet<lb />
about it. Talks involving the United<lb />
States, North and South Korea,<lb />
China, Russia and Japan showed just<lb />
how strong North Korean resolve is<lb />
on the issue. The fact that sanctions<lb />
have been put on North Korea by<lb />
the United States because of coun-<lb />
terfeiting issues and the fact that<lb />
Bush named North Korea as part of<lb />
the "Axis of Evil" in a State of the<lb />
Union Address has not made North<lb />
Korea more cooperative.<lb />
The testing involved a<lb />
Taepodong-2 intercontinental bal-<lb />
listic missile with an estimated<lb />
range of 2,175 to 2,670 miles, which<lb />
is more than enough range to reach<lb />
the United States. In response to<lb />
North Korea's missile capabilities,<lb />
the U.S. government has increased<lb />
funding to building and perfecting<lb />
a missile defense system by $10 bil-<lb />
lion a year.<lb />
The original "Star Wars" system<lb />
was largely mythical as a means of<lb />
psyche warfare against the Russians<lb />
during the Cold War. A smaller,<lb />
scaled down version and thereby<lb />
more realistic version called "Son of<lb />
Star Wars" is now in effect using and<lb />
UJ f<lb />
This is an Orbview-3 satellite image provided by GeoEye showing the Taepodong missile launch complex in<lb />
North Korea, called Musudan-ri.<lb />
undergoing further development.<lb />
According to U.S. intelligence,<lb />
North Korea also boasts the world's<lb />
fourth best army.<lb />
Technically, the Korean War<lb />
never ended as there is but a cease-<lb />
fire in place between the communist<lb />
North and the Democratic South.<lb />
There is a buffer area between the<lb />
two states called the demilitarized<lb />
zone.<lb />
Sean McCormack of the State<lb />
Department warned North Korea<lb />
on Friday saying, "We will take nec-<lb />
essary preparatory steps to track any<lb />
potential activities and to protect<lb />
ourselves<lb />
In August of 1998 North Korea<lb />
fired a ballistic missile over Japan.<lb />
While that missile was considered<lb />
rather short in terms of its range,<lb />
North Korea continues to work on<lb />
building a longer-range version and<lb />
may be close to completion.<lb />

FDA approves cervical cancer vaccine<lb />
(KRT) With a green light<lb />
from regulators, Merck & Co. Inc.<lb />
has begun deploying 1,500 freshly<lb />
trained salespeople and unleashing<lb />
a huge marketing campaign around<lb />
a delicate topic: cancer and sex.<lb />
The Food and Drug Adminis-<lb />
tration approved Merck's cervical<lb />
cancer vaccine Gardasil yesterday,<lb />
inaugurating a vaccine market<lb />
potentially worth several billion<lb />
dollars a year, with the Philadel-<lb />
phia area at its core. Gardasil will<lb />
be manufactured and marketed<lb />
from Merck's West Point complex.<lb />
GlaxoSmithKline PLC, developing<lb />
a rival vaccine Cervarix, has a U.S.<lb />
headquarters in Philadelphia. Both<lb />
vaccines ultimately could save<lb />
countless lives by helping prevent<lb />
infection from sexually-transmit-<lb />
ted strains of human papilloma-<lb />
virus, or HPV, that cause cancer,<lb />
the FDA and health experts said.<lb />
But Merck-the first to market-must<lb />
clear several legal and marketing<lb />
obstacles before the vaccines will<lb />
be widely available.<lb />
Merck's immediate challenge<lb />
is persuading federal and state<lb />
officials to recommend and pay for<lb />
widespread or mandatory vaccina-<lb />
tions, over possible objections of<lb />
sexual-abstinence and anti-vaccine<lb />
groups that prefer Pap smears as a<lb />
proven prevention. Merck market-<lb />
ers, working already for a year to<lb />
publicize HPV risks and prime the<lb />
market, also must take care not to<lb />
undermine cancer screening and<lb />
safe-sex campaigns, experts said.<lb />
All the while, Merck must watch<lb />
over its shoulder at GlaxoSmith-<lb />
Kline, which hopes to launch<lb />
Cervarix by late 2007.<lb />
Its second-to-market strategy is<lb />
to let Merck pave the regulatory road<lb />
and then slingshot past Gardasil.<lb />
"We congratulate Merck on<lb />
their launch and we hope to be<lb />
right behind them said Brian<lb />
Lortie, GlaxoSmithKline's vice<lb />
president for worldwide HPV vac-<lb />
cine development.<lb />
At stake, beyond public he HPV<lb />
can cause cancer. Surveys found<lb />
fewer than 20 percent of people<lb />
knew about the link, said Beverly<lb />
Lybrand, vice president and general<lb />
manager for Gardasil at Merck<lb />
Vaccines Division. Merck's cor-<lb />
porate "Tell Someone" campaign,<lb />
launched in April, uses paid TV<lb />
ads showing actresses, in interview<lb />
style, expressing surprise about the<lb />
cause and pledging to tell others.<lb />
Last fall, Merck funded "Make<lb />
the Connection run by the<lb />
industry-backed nonprofit Cancer<lb />
Research and Prevention Founda-<lb />
tion and celebrity charity Step Up<lb />
Women's Network. Designed by the<lb />
public-relations giant Edelman, the<lb />
campaign features publicity events,<lb />
a TV public-service announcement<lb />
and cameos by celebrities such as<lb />
Maria Shriver and Jessica Alba wear-<lb />
ing girls' beaded bracelets- designed<lb />
by Edelman-to highlight the link.<lb />
"That has been very impactful"<lb />
for girls, Lybrand said.<lb />
Neither campaign mentions<lb />
Gardasil, which Merck could not<lb />
legally promote until getting its<lb />
FDA license. Since last year, Merck<lb />
has spent at least1 million on the<lb />
campaigns without a dime in rev-<lb />
enues, including roughly $850,000<lb />
on online activities, according to<lb />
figures from its nonprofit partners<lb />
and TNS Media Intelligence, a<lb />
market research firm.<lb />

The top 10 most outrageous<lb />
excuses for tardiness on the job<lb />
(CareerBuilder.com) A new survey by Career-<lb />

24 percent say they arrive late at least once a month.<lb />
One-in-five admit to making up fake excuses to explain<lb />

The CareerBuilder.com survey, "Late to Work was<lb />

2,500 workers, including 1,000 hiring managers.<lb />
"While the majority of hiring managers tend to be<lb />

much stricter in their policies said Rosemary Haefner,<lb />
vice president of human resources for CareerBuilder.<lb />

"Thirty percent of hiring managers say they don't<lb />

work is completed on time with good quality. However,<lb />
one-in-ten hiring managers say they would consider<lb />
terminating an employee if heshe arrives late once or<lb />
twice in a given year. One-in-five say a pink slip may be<lb />
in order if an employee is late three times in a year<lb />
When asked to identify the primary cause for<lb />
coming in late, 27 percent of workers cited traffic. Ten<lb />
percent pointed to getting their kids ready for school<lb />
or day care while 11 percent said falling back asleep<lb />
was the main culprit. Other popular reasons<lb />
included forgetting something at home, feeling<lb />
sick and the inability to find house or car keys.<lb />
Not surprising, Monday is the most popularday for late<lb />
arrivals, according to 64 percent of hiring managers.<lb />

"It's about biodiversity, and it's<lb />

Revising the document will<lb />

time consuming and require as<lb />
much detail as the constitution.<lb />

that ECU offers. The SGA is also<lb />

OPINION<lb />
editor@theeastcarolinian.com<lb />
SARAH BELL EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb />
In My Opinion<lb />
Al-Zarqawi's death overrated<lb />
One down, lots more to go<lb />
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
OPINION COLUMNIST<lb />
High ranking al-Qaida official<lb />
Abu Musab Al Zarqawi was killed<lb />
on June 7th in a raid by U.S. forces.<lb />
Since then, it seems that our gov-<lb />
ernment has stated that they have<lb />
done everything to confirm his<lb />
death except poke him with a stick.<lb />
Frankly, seeing his dead face on tele-<lb />
vision was enough for me.<lb />
For days the government was<lb />
performing various tests to confirm<lb />
that Zarqawi was dead. It seemed like<lb />
they wanted to make sure that he<lb />
was not mostly dead, because as we<lb />
all know mostly dead is slightly alive.<lb />
The story of his death seems<lb />
reminiscent of the fate of the Wicked<lb />
Witch of the East. Who would have<lb />
guessed that our military's firepower<lb />
was equivalent to that of a house<lb />
from Kansas falling from the sky?<lb />
The discovery of Zarqawi's death is<lb />
reminiscent another scene from the<lb />
' same movie, with American authori-<lb />
ties dancing around like the Mum h-<lb />
kins in celebration of his death.<lb />
Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little<lb />
bit. But when you consider the fact<lb />
that a U.S. army officer displayed a<lb />
picture of a dead Zarqawi in a golden<lb />
frame, you have to wonder.<lb />
The discovery of documents,<lb />
computer files, weapons and other<lb />
supplies that al-Qaida forces were<lb />
utilizing appear to be the veritable<lb />
"ruby slippers" in this situation.<lb />
Unfortunately there also appears<lb />
to be a Wicked Witch of the West<lb />
as well. U.S. military officials have<lb />
identified Abu Ayyub al-Masri, an<lb />
Egyptian, who is believed to also use<lb />
the name Abu Hamza al-Mujaher,<lb />
as Zarqawi's successor in Iraq and<lb />
presumably in operations beyond.<lb />
I'll gladly state that I think it's<lb />
great that Zarqawi is dead, and that<lb />
he got a well-deserved death. Maybe<lb />
a picture of his dead face in a gold<lb />
frame being displayed on national<lb />
television is a bit much, but then<lb />
again having his head on a pike<lb />
may not have been enough for some<lb />
(maybe even me). The problem I<lb />
really have is that I don't think that<lb />
the media and our government are<lb />
painting a true picture of the impact<lb />
that Zarqawi's death will have in our<lb />
situation in Iraq.<lb />
Zarqawi had no real history<lb />
before Iraq. He did not stand out<lb />
in the Afghan war in the 1980s like<lb />
others who accompanied Bin Laden.<lb />
If anything Al Zarqawi was keen<lb />
on linking himself with Bin Laden<lb />
because of his status in the funda-<lb />
mentalist world. In all possibility,<lb />
Bin Laden did not openly appoint<lb />
Al Zarqawi to lead al-Qaida in what<lb />
is known as "the land of two rivers<lb />
but rather Al Zarqawi volunteered<lb />
andor imposed himself into this<lb />
position. His activities and methods<lb />
were not in total harmony with Bin<lb />
Laden's tactics, who prefers to con-<lb />
centrate on fighting the "crusaders<lb />
meaning non-Muslims.<lb />
Al Zarqawi's death was indeed a<lb />
great success for the intelligence com-<lb />
munity. However, the events that led<lb />
to his death were made possible due<lb />
to the fact that Zarqawi's "inner<lb />
circle" was penetrated and that one<lb />
of the persons close to him wanted<lb />
to collect the bounty on his head.<lb />
Also Zarqawi's tactics and methods<lb />
of killing Iraqis were no longer<lb />
acceptable to other armed groups.<lb />
Al Zarqawi's fall was expected,<lb />
with the shrinking of his area of<lb />
operation and as the sympathy of<lb />
the western region's tribes decreased.<lb />
And so he died not in some grand<lb />
glorious battle in the city of Baghdad,<lb />
but in a remote town not far from<lb />
the Iranian border on the receiv-<lb />
ing end of a missile brought to him<lb />
courtesy of the red, white and blue.<lb />
Some optimists expect that<lb />
Zarqawi's death will make Iraq more<lb />
stable in less time than previously<lb />
anticipated or expected. However<lb />
based on the behavior of al-Qaida in<lb />
the past, the appearance of al-Masri,<lb />
aka al-Mujaher, and the fact that we<lb />
still can't seem to find Osama Bin<lb />
Laden, I feel that it is not a snake's<lb />
head we have cut off with Zarqawi's<lb />
death, but a hydra's head. A hydra<lb />
was a mythical, multi-headed crea-<lb />
ture that when one head was cut<lb />
off more would grow in its place.<lb />
The only way to stop them from<lb />
growing was to burn the resulting<lb />
wound. I fear we have yet to light<lb />
the torches.<lb />
Pirate Rants<lb />
Why does everyone want to be dif-<lb />
ferent but think you are crazy when<lb />
you actually are different?<lb />
Thank you TEC for giving me some-<lb />
thing do read while I am bored on<lb />
Wednesdays!<lb />
There's this couple at work who are<lb />
'not dating Every time somebody<lb />
asks them if they are going out and<lb />
he says they're not she looks like<lb />
she's going to cry. It makes me want<lb />
to punch him in the face. He should<lb />
be a man and either pursue a rela-<lb />
tionship or stop coming around and<lb />
constantly flirting with her.<lb />
At least it is not as hot as it was last<lb />
summer in Greenville!<lb />
Why are vacations never long<lb />
enough when you want to be where<lb />
you are, but too long when you are<lb />
tired of being gone?<lb />
Fat men should not wear Speedos<lb />
and jump on trampolines!<lb />
My office has a no fraternization<lb />
policy, which is fine and under-<lb />
standable. But what makes me<lb />
really mad is how the boss lets some<lb />
people ignore it "because they're<lb />
cute I should ask for a cuteness<lb />
exemption since I'm pretty cute too.<lb />
I guess the policy is just there so<lb />
they can force unattractive people<lb />
to quit if they dare to commit the<lb />
horrible sin of 'having feelings<lb />
The food Nazis are after Starbucks<lb />
now! It seems everyone who drinks<lb />
their coffee will die someday, give<lb />
me a break.<lb />
So, it is still bad if you have a the-<lb />
saurus that was given to you as a<lb />
Christmas present with your initials<lb />
engraved on the front and used<lb />
weekly, but you still swear?<lb />
Recently I read a rant about the<lb />
SGA only caring about the SGA.<lb />
This is wrong. The SGA makes<lb />
policies that affect every student<lb />
at ECU. It governs student fees and<lb />
all campus organizations. I would<lb />
like to thank TEC for covering<lb />
the SGA. Don't be stupid people,<lb />
pay attention to what is going on,<lb />
and for God's sake get involved.<lb />
I'm really sick of people saying: "Oh,<lb />
nice trench coat, like The Matrix<lb />
Every time I wear my raincoat. It is<lb />
a different color from the coats in<lb />
the movie, and it isn't even a trench<lb />
coat. Trench coats have two sets of<lb />
buttons and a belt. Rain coats have<lb />
one set of buttons and no belt. Thank<lb />
you for you time and attention.<lb />
It is more expensive for me to join<lb />
the Rec center as an alumni than it<lb />
is for me to join other gyms in town<lb />
that actually have qualified trainers<lb />
and free classes. As if you have not<lb />
raped my wallet for the past six years,<lb />
now that I have a real job you can<lb />
really pick my pockets. Thanks ECU!<lb />
You know your summer sucks<lb />
when, in June, you start counting<lb />
down the days until fall semester<lb />
starts.<lb />
Letter to the Editor<lb />
Dear Editor,<lb />
I have uncovered a startling<lb />
secret: Dustin Pittman is a lib-<lb />
eral sympathizer. His agenda is<lb />
cleverly disguised beneath a mask<lb />
of stalwart conservatism, but is<lb />
chalked full of undeniable liberal<lb />
undertones.<lb />
Although he does not say so<lb />
directly, Dustin clearly thinks Al<lb />
Gore, not George W. Bush, should<lb />
have been our president after the<lb />
2000 election. If not, why would<lb />
he spend so much time reiterat-<lb />
ing that "America is a majority<lb />
rule society or that Bush is<lb />
president because "A majority of<lb />
Americans voted for a Republican<lb />
president" ?<lb />
Holding true to his own opin-<lb />
ions, there is no way around the<lb />
fact that Dustin thinks Al Gore<lb />
should be our president. Dustin<lb />
is also pro-choice. How do I<lb />
know? His repeated demands to<lb />
dissolve or neuter the Supreme<lb />
Court. Dustin knows Roe v. Wade<lb />
will soon be overturned by those<lb />
loathsome activist judges, and<lb />
there is no doubt in my mind<lb />
Dustin will be outraged when this<lb />
happens - after all, the majority of<lb />
Americans support Roe v. Wade.<lb />
His clear distaste of judicial activ-<lb />
ism in the face of the majority<lb />
should is certainly an inspira-<lb />
tion to pro-choice supporters<lb />
everywhere.<lb />
I applaud Dustin in his attempt<lb />
to support both ends of the spec-<lb />
trum equally, but I must say it is<lb />
becoming increasingly confusing.<lb />

'Nacho Libre' released last weekend<lb />
This interesting group of<lb />
characters are lacking in<lb />
overall direction<lb />
ZACH STEPHENSON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Jack Black has the gift of tenac-<lb />
ity. His work with pal Kyle Gass in<lb />
the vaudeville scheme known as<lb />
Tenacious D, is exactly that, tena-<lb />
cious. In other words, Black has<lb />
the ability to bend an oversimpli-<lb />
fied concept well past its original<lb />
intention.<lb />
Jared Hess' Nacho Libre provides<lb />
a perfect archetype for Black's<lb />
character. While the young director<lb />
and screenwriter is blessed with the<lb />
creative adeptness to bring absurdly<lb />
mundane subject matter to life,<lb />
he lacks the speed-driven focus of<lb />
previous generations' to intertwine<lb />
it with important cinematic ele-<lb />
ments, such as character develop-<lb />
ment and plot depth.<lb />
Taking obvious cues from Wes<lb />
Anderson, at times Nacho Libre<lb />
perfectly mirrors the awkwardness<lb />
and empty glass humor of films<lb />
like Rushmore, but fails miserably<lb />
at reeling the intent into a produc-<lb />
tive result.<lb />
Bring in Black - an overweight,<lb />
comedic talent with the unrivaled<lb />
capability of appealing to intellec-<lb />
tual sets and frat boys alike. Much<lb />
like John Belushi, Black uses the<lb />
simplistic allure of fart jokes, but<lb />
does it with genius improvisation<lb />
resulting in a keyed-up gamble,<lb />
frolicking in preposterous reason.<lb />
But, just as every 'Cool Hand Luke'<lb />
has his ball-and-chain, Nacho Libre<lb />
seems to imprison Black between his<lb />
brief escapes into jesting freedom.<lb />
Despite its lack of cohesiveness,<lb />
the film is far from a checkmate<lb />
to Hess's directorial career. The<lb />
story has an amusing premise, and<lb />
Nacho's scraggy wrestling partner<lb />
Esqueleto (Hector Jimenez) is a nice<lb />
supplement to the film's pace.<lb />
His character provokes Black's<lb />
most memorable moments, includ-<lb />
ing a few brawls reminiscent of<lb />
South Park's satiric take on the infa-<lb />
mous Roddy Piper and Keith David<lb />
scuffle in They Live.<lb />
Nacho Libre exhibits a montage<lb />
of one-liners, as seen in Hess' Napo-<lb />
leon Dynamite, but they lack enthu-<lb />
siasm, although Black's Hispanic<lb />
impersonation of Antonio Banderas<lb />
is rich with parodying stereotype.<lb />
It is a ballsy approach to a PG flick,<lb />
but it flawlessly complements the<lb />
film's slapstick ambitions. Hess's<lb />
capabilities make the perfect candi-<lb />
date for a Saturday Night Live writer.<lb />
His ability to actualize characters<lb />
like Nacho and Napoleon Dynamite<lb />
would glue late-night-college-ston-<lb />
ers into a ratings vortex.<lb />
At the same time, it would allow<lb />
him a less demanding landscape to<lb />
exhibit his comedic talent. Ljce the<lb />
numerous SNL skits adapted to the<lb />
silver screen, Hess's films frequently<lb />
carry redeeming moments, but<lb />
the polished product lacks overall<lb />
direction.<lb />

Party guide: Don't be guilty of a dreaded party foul<lb />
The error-proof plan for a<lb />
perfect summer party<lb />
UZ FULTON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
A successful band party thrown by Kappa Sigma is shown above.<lb />
Ah, summer. Just saying the<lb />
word conjures up images of bikinis,<lb />
Coronas, long days that turn into<lb />
longer nights and more impor-<lb />
tantly, nights that turn into days.<lb />
It's plenty fun to go down-<lb />
town and see who you can find<lb />
on Cotanche, but to break up the<lb />
monotony, this is the best time to<lb />
roll with your summer crew at a<lb />
good old-fashioned house party.<lb />
There is a catch-22 with house<lb />
parties, though. You want to get<lb />
the word out and have a substantial<lb />
number of guests, but at the same<lb />
time you don't want it to get so<lb />
overblown that you wake up the<lb />
g next morning with a barely inhab-<lb />
n itable dwelling. Here is a list of<lb />
essentials for a lively and enjoyable<lb />
o festivity that people will be talking<lb />
about well into fall semester.<lb />
The primary necessity is a<lb />
diverse guest list. Make sure to mix<lb />
it up with your back home friends<lb />
who complain constantly about the<lb />
lameness of their respective colleges<lb />
(sorry N.C. State, you simply can't<lb />
compete) with your posse of peeps<lb />
who have spent the last three years<lb />
studying the drink specials at bars<lb />
around town in lieu of their Black-<lb />
board assignments.<lb />
Also cruise your distant friends<lb />
on MySpace or Facebook that have<lb />
a distinguishable level of hotness to<lb />
bring some much needed eye-candy<lb />
to your traditional entourage. It also<lb />
creates situations for random hook-<lb />
ups and bad decisions amidst the<lb />
reduced summer population.<lb />
Adding a theme to your soiree<lb />
can also have added benefits for a<lb />
rockin' good time. There is the very<lb />
cliched but never overdone toga<lb />
theme, which some of my friends<lb />
have had great luck with. Bed sheets<lb />
and Budlight? I smell success.<lb />
Luaus are also perfect for<lb />
summer because bathing suits<lb />
and leis take out much of the<lb />
thinking about what to wear.<lb />
Those who are really ambitious can<lb />
cruise Party Makers on Arlington<lb />
Boulevard for their various assort-<lb />
ments of decorations.<lb />
It could also be fun to center a<lb />
whole party around a certain bev-<lb />
erage of choice. A Captain Morgan<lb />
party might entail everyone dress-<lb />
ing like pirates while Jose Cuervo<lb />
will pose the question, "Are you a<lb />
Mexican or a Mexican't?"<lb />
But nothing is more important<lb />
than the selection of tunes on rota-<lb />
tion at your party. Crowd favorites<lb />
like Sublime are key as well as<lb />
smooth-talking slow jams for later<lb />
on in the night. It is also vital to<lb />
play beach music favorites such as<lb />
"Carolina Girls "Cool Me Out"<lb />
and "Stagger Lee<lb />
Music can also signal the clos-<lb />
ing of a party with songs such as<lb />
"Tuesday's Gone" and "Closing<lb />
Time If you simply want people to<lb />
leave, playing Nickelback or Michael<lb />
McDonald will guarantee people to<lb />

Battle of the Sexes<lb /><lb />
The opposite sex is so<lb />
annoying<lb />
MEREDITH STEWART<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Since the beginning of time<lb />
it has been a battle of the sexes.<lb />
Guys love girls, from the way they<lb />
walk to the way<lb />
they talk; they just<lb />
can't seem to get<lb />
enough. They can<lb />
not live without<lb />
girls yet find it<lb />
frustrating to live<lb />
with them. Same<lb />
theory applies to<lb />
girls. They all love<lb />
guys, but despise<lb />
their rude and<lb />
sometimes obnox-<lb />
ious habits. I've<lb />
narrowed down<lb />
the habits of both<lb />
guys and girls to<lb />
see what students<lb />
at ECU find most annoying about<lb />
the opposite sex.<lb />
One thing women do that<lb />
drives men crazy is criticize other<lb />
women. Seems like many women<lb />
can not make a simple compli-<lb />
ment toward another woman, they<lb />
love to analyze everything about<lb />
Who's Fault?<lb />
Guy's faults:<lb />
leave the toilet seat up<lb />
Let dirty dishes sit in the sink for<lb />
a week<lb />
Have wandering eyes<lb />
Drive like they are in a race<lb />
Girl's faults:<lb />
Nag, Nag, Nag<lb />
Stress about their appearances<lb />
Become too emotional<lb />
Pretend to be Innocent<lb />
other girls from their weight to<lb />
what they are wearing. Only a girl<lb />
would notice another girls' purse<lb />
didn't match or that small bump<lb />
on her face.<lb />
"I went out with this girl one<lb />
time and all she did was talk about<lb />
how other girls looked. It was hard<lb />
to even get to know what she liked<lb />
because all she<lb />
talked about was<lb />
how ugly every-<lb />
one else was and<lb />
how they were<lb />
out of style said<lb />
Sean Bozeman,<lb />

Another thing<lb />
girls seem to do<lb />
quite often is to<lb />
act in a jealous<lb />
manner. Often<lb />
just mentioning<lb />
another woman's<lb />
name can make<lb />
her perk up and<lb />
listen to you. Call it want you wish,<lb />
but many girls second guess every-<lb />
thing, especially a guy. If you have<lb />

DiFranco's Time to Heal'<lb />
solo live album debuts<lb />
Ani DiFranco: "Carnegie<lb />
Hall 4.6.02"<lb />
SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
A few months ago one of<lb />
my dearest friends couldn't<lb />
stop talking about a singer she<lb />
had stumbled upon while flip-<lb />
ping through the radio. When<lb />
she mentioned her name, Ani<lb />
DiFranco I have to admit that<lb />
the only thing that I recognized<lb />
about her was just that, her name.<lb />
I was quite unfamiliar with<lb />
her sound and vowed to check out<lb />
some of her music even if I did not<lb />
quite put a deadline on that vow.<lb />
Okay, I have to admit that I did<lb />
not run out and buy her albums<lb />
right away. However, when 1 came<lb />
across her latest live album, "Carn-<lb />
egie Hall 4.6.02 I jumped at the<lb />
opportunity to tune in.<lb />
I wasn't sure what to expect<lb />
when 1 first popped this album into<lb />
my CD player, but I can tell you<lb />
that what I heard was far beyond<lb />
my expectations. This album is<lb />
drenched in emotion; jam packed<lb />
with stellar guitar rifts and topped<lb />
off with the amazing voice of<lb />
none other than DiFranco herself.<lb />
Just seven short months after<lb />
the Sept. 11 attacks in New York,<lb />
DiFranco played a packed house at<lb />
Carnegie Hall.<lb />
The raw emotional atmosphere<lb />
of that night is captured in this live<lb />
recording. Four years after this jaw<lb />
dropping performance DiFranco<lb />
released this album on April 4.<lb />
Her solo album features IS<lb />
song and spoken word choices,<lb />
along with a comical anecdote<lb />
about the inspiration behind the<lb />
song "Gratitude<lb />
Each song effortlessly pulls the<lb />
audience into a soothing state of<lb />
mind and allows you to completely<lb />
connect with the lyrics.<lb />
My favorite part of the entire<lb />
album is when DiFranco recites her<lb />
poem, "Self Evident<lb />
Self Evident brings to light<lb />
the realities that the Sept. 11<lb />
attacks awakened in all Americans.<lb />
Throughout the entire album<lb />
DiFranco uses her opinions to<lb />
add color to the riveting accounts<lb />
of her life as well as the lives of<lb />
others.<lb />
Her lyrics are poignant and<lb />
honest, and while you may not<lb />
agree with her point of view you<lb />
will definitely appreciate her music.<lb />
DiFranco's latest studio album,<lb />
"Reprieve hits stores August 8.<lb />
The recording of this 12-track<lb />
album began in New Orleans, but<lb />
was finished in Buffalo due to the<lb />
catastrophe that Katrina caused.<lb />
The album consists of both<lb />
song and spoken word selections.<lb />

Ways to embrace<lb />
summer<lb />
SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Summer is officially here so<lb />
now is the time everyone will be<lb />
searching for the perfect way to<lb />
spend his or her free time without<lb />
breaking the bank. Summertime<lb />
offers many different activities<lb />
from sunset picnics to a trip to<lb />
the beach.<lb />
If you are a lover of the out-<lb />
doors, summer is the perfect<lb />
season to take advantage of warm<lb />
days and cool nights. Grab your<lb />
pals and head to a local pool for<lb />
an afternoon of fun in the sun.<lb />
Turn off your cell phone and leave<lb />
your stress at home. It's not only<lb />
a great way to cool off, but also to<lb />
enjoy an uninterrupted afternoon<lb />
of conversation.<lb />
If you are looking for some<lb />
old-school fun in the sun, try run-<lb />
ning through the sprinklers with<lb />
your closest group of friends. This<lb />
was fun while you were young and<lb />
it can be just as much fun now,<lb />
especially if you don't mind your<lb />
water bill being a little on the<lb />
high side.<lb />
Spending all day in the sun<lb />
can work up quite an appetite.<lb />
With the temperatures cooling<lb />
down in the evening, a picnic<lb />
under the stars will offer excite-<lb />
ment along with relaxation. Pack<lb />
some sandwiches and a blanket,<lb />
and head to a local park for a<lb />
magical evening. Greenville's Elm<lb />
Street Park offers a picnic shelter<lb />
containing tables, but be sure to<lb />
plan ahead because the park closes<lb />
at nightfall.<lb />
Tennis is a popular sport to<lb />
enjoy during the summer. It is a<lb />
great sport to learn because there<lb />
are opportunities to play at all dif-<lb />
ferent ages and skill levels. After<lb />
learning all of the rules, tennis<lb />
can be played at a leisurely pace,<lb />
or you can choose to spice it up<lb />
with a bit of competition. Elm<lb />
Street Park offers public tennis<lb />
courts where you can practice<lb />
and compete.<lb />
If you prefer watching sports<lb />
rather than participating in them,<lb />
baseball is a great American<lb />
pastime that can be enjoyed on<lb />
many different levels. Local teams<lb />
have night games, but if you are<lb />
looking for a higher level of skill,<lb />
look no further than the Kinston<lb />
Indians. This minor league team<lb />
can be found playing home games<lb />
in Kinston, N.C. at Grainger<lb />
Stadium, right off Highway 11. A<lb />
schedule of events can be found<lb />
at kinstonindians.com.<lb />
If the pool is just not sponta-<lb />
neous enough for you, try taking<lb />
a road trip to one of your favorite<lb />
beaches. North Carolina is cer-<lb />
tainly not lacking in great places<lb />
to visit on your day of adventure.<lb />
You can enjoy a day of fun in the<lb />
sun with minimal expense. Some<lb />
of the more popular beaches this<lb />
summer are Emerald Isle, Wrights-<lb />
ville Beach, Carolina Beach and<lb />
Atlantic Beach.<lb />
While you are there, you can<lb />
try your hand at surfing, body<lb />
boarding, skim boarding or even<lb />
sand castle building. A stroll along<lb />
the beach as the sun sets is great<lb />
for romantics, while a seashell<lb />
search is ideal for friends and<lb />
family.<lb />
For thrill seekers, the beach<lb />
may not provide all the adrena-<lb />
line pumping action you're look-<lb />
ing for. An amusement or water<lb />
park may be more your speed.<lb />
For close to $40 a day you can<lb />
spend the entire day riding roller<lb />
coasters, barreling down enor-<lb />
mous slides or watching shows.<lb />
One down side to the parks, how-<lb />
ever, is they can be pricey when<lb />
taking into account the price of<lb />
food and souvenirs.<lb />
Summer is the season of con-<lb />
certs. Hearing live music is one<lb />
of the most exhilarating things<lb />
to do. You can see your favorite<lb />
bands or artists perform as they<lb />
tour the country stopping at<lb />
various locations along the way.<lb />
To find out who's coming to a<lb />
town near you visit ticketmaster.<lb />
com. If you don't mind the short<lb />
drive to Raleigh, you can look at<lb />
the schedule for Alltel Pavilion<lb />
online at alltelpavilion.com and<lb />
check out their incredible list of<lb />
performers for this summer.<lb />
Do you have a passion for art?<lb />
If so a local art museum or gal-<lb />
lery may be the perfect venue to<lb />
explore. Local venues include the<lb />
Greenville Museum of Art as well<lb />
as Emerge Art Gallery. Both have<lb />
rotating exhibits and are open<lb />
to the public free of charge. You<lb />
can view painting, photographs,<lb />
drawings, sculptures and more.<lb />
Summer has arrived which<lb />
means the days are longer and the<lb />
possibilities are endless. Make the<lb />
most of your summer by spending<lb />
your days enjoying everything<lb />
life has to offer. Don't let summer<lb />
pass you by, school will be starting<lb />
back before you know it.<lb />
This writer can be contacted at<lb />

When guys do something annoying, they can be subject to this yelling.<lb />
"Girls like to act jealous, when<lb />
I really do not think they are. They<lb />
come up with random stuff to<lb />
believe and then I end up not even<lb />
knowing what's going on. If I did not<lb />
like the girl I was with, then I would<lb />
not be with her said James Tsui,<lb />
sophomore criminal justice major.<lb />
If you have given her reason<lb />
to doubt you in the past, then you<lb />
should only be so lucky for her to<lb />
give you another chance, but if not,<lb />
then you should not have to pay the<lb />
price for her feeling insecure.<lb />
In the battle of the sexes it has<lb />
always been about who wears the<lb />
"pants" in the relationship. The<lb />
main thing girls use as a manipula-<lb />
tive way to get what they want is sex.<lb />
In many cases women use sex<lb />
to gain superiority over men, this<lb />
has been going on for ages and<lb />
will continue until men come up<lb />
with something better.<lb />
And while many believe this to<lb />
be a dirty tactic, girls should really<lb />
leave the basic human needs out of<lb />
the picture when trying to get what<lb />
they want. Agree?<lb />
Now it's time for the girls to<lb />
get their wild screams and protests<lb />
into the open about guys. What<lb />
is the deal with selective hearing?<lb />
It is like guys have a filter in their<lb />
brain and only hear the parts of the<lb />
stories that include food or sex. I<lb />
know girls can talk your ear off, but<lb />
paying attention is half of the battle.<lb />
Men seem to have the ability<lb />
to pick and choose what they hear,<lb />
so hear this next time your girl is<lb />
talking and you are not paying<lb />
attention just take that as a "no sex<lb />
for you" ticket.<lb />
Guys - they burp, fart and spit<lb />
all things most girls can not stand.<lb />
But just think - if a girl walked<lb />
around spitting everywhere, burp-<lb />
ing out loud and leaving silent, but<lb />
deadly gas trails, guys would defi-<lb />
nitely not find that attractive.<lb />
They would be completely<lb />
grossed out and more than likely<lb />
never talk to that girl again. But<lb />
as soon as a guy does any of these<lb />
things, it becomes funny?<lb />
"My ex-boyfriend thought<lb />
burping loud was a talent and pass-<lb />
ing gas was just all too hilarious.<lb />
Since I could not break those bad<lb />
habits I had to break the relation-<lb />
ship said Cat Stallings, junior<lb />
English major.<lb />
Although guys have selective<lb />
hearing, they are not as careful as<lb />
to what they talk about. The one<lb />
thing that can get to a girl more<lb />
than just about anything else is<lb />
for a guy to sit there and chat away<lb />
about one of his ex-girlfriends.<lb />
Whether it is just a first date or if<lb />
you have been in a relationship<lb />
for a while, I can not name one<lb />
girl who wants to hear about an<lb />
old flame.<lb />
It makes them feel like they<lb />
are being compared to your old<lb />
girlfriend or that you are trying to<lb />
drop a few hints she has some of<lb />
the same traits your ex did. And<lb />
if that is the case, your girlfriend<lb />
will think that you are going to<lb />
end things soon just like you did<lb />
with the girl before her.<lb />
"I can not stand for a guy to talk<lb />
away our dinner date about his ex.<lb />
That leads me to believe that he is<lb />
not over her and that he constantly<lb />
thinks about her. I wish that guys<lb />
would keep stuff like that to their<lb />
self, unless they are asked about<lb />
it said Alina Panchuk, sophomore<lb />
political science major.<lb />
There you go guys, no matter<lb />
how hard you try to open up<lb />
about your past feelings and other<lb />
experiences that you believe a girl wants<lb />
to know, they change their mind.<lb />
Just think of another way to get<lb />
her to understand you and know<lb />
that you have a different side, but<lb />
talking about your past relation-<lb />
ships is just not the way to go.<lb />
The battle of the sexes is end-<lb />
less. Girls will continue to be aliens<lb />
to guys and guys will always strug-<lb />
gle to decode women. Just remem-<lb />
ber that habits are just the charac-<lb />
teristics of another and should not<lb />
always be quickly judged.<lb />
Just because someone does<lb />
things you do not like, does not<lb />
mean they cannot be talked out or<lb />
at least compromised.<lb />

Hurricanes aren't supposed<lb />

But In the immediate aftermath of<lb />

Cup Finals Monday night, the Tri-<lb />
angle couldn't help Itself.<lb />
Trust me, I was there. And all<lb />
of the rest of the Caniacs wouldn't<lb />
have traded a minute of it In the<lb />
wake of North Carolina's first-ever<lb />
professional sports title, a car was<lb />
destroyed and a band rock-h-rolled<lb />
redneck hockey style just outside of<lb />
the RBC Center.<lb />
Cars honked jingles and<lb />
fists were pumped as high as the<lb />
new Progress Energy building in<lb />
downtown Raleigh. Crowd surfers<lb />
were tossed around and strangers<lb />
exchanged high-fives as if they<lb />

That was just outside. Captain<lb />

No way the Hurricanes were<lb />

Cam Ward made sure of that.<lb />
The rookie goalie stopped nearly<lb />

Stanley Cup the 114-year-old silver<lb />
chalice that signaled to all hockey<lb />
Has a home in North Carolina.<lb />
"Nine years in the making.<lb />
It's about time said an impatient<lb />
Adrian lonescu, 19, of Cary.<lb />
In the team's second trip to the<lb />
Stanley Cup finals since the former<lb />
Hartford Whalers moved south<lb />
in 1997, the Hurricanes beat the<lb />
Edmonton Oilers in seven games,<lb />
unleashing Tuesday's parade of<lb />
pickup trucks carting players<lb />
through a cheering crowd of Cani-<lb />
acs at the RBC Center.<lb />
Assistant captain Glen Wesley<lb />
held the silver Stanley Cup aloft as<lb />
children in his truck pitched foam<lb />
pucks into the crowd like they were<lb />
medallions tossed from a Mardi<lb />
Gras float.<lb />
Other fans waited to hear their<lb />
hometown heroes trumpet victory<lb />
on stage, where a band warmed up<lb />
a crowd at the end of a 90-degree<lb />
day. Long lines formed for beer and<lb />
smoothies, while better prepared<lb />
o fans brought coolers and kicked<lb />
back under the few shady spots.<lb />
$ "They call it a nontraditional<lb />
hockey market, but there's all those<lb />
people out there screaming in the<lb />
heat said defenseman Aaron<lb />
Ward. "So maybe by the standards<lb />
of temperature we're not a hockey<lb />
market, but we've got some enthu-<lb />
siasm out there<lb />
Bill Murphy, 44, of Raleigh,<lb />
wore his red Hurricanes sweater and<lb />
took pride in the life-size replica of<lb />
the Cup he spent hours building<lb />
out of cardboard, tape and alumi-<lb />
num foil. He said he engineered<lb />
the model using specifications he<lb />
found on the Internet, attaching it<lb />
to the trunk of his Honda Accord<lb />
two days ago.<lb />
A New York transplant and<lb />
an Islanders fan his entire life, he<lb />
wanted his son 8-year-old Brendan<lb />
to experience his adopted city's<lb />
celebration.<lb />
"There's so much history in<lb />
that Cup Murphy said. "Some<lb />
people think it's just a trophy, but<lb />
it's a way of life for hockey fans<lb /><lb /><pb facs="00059427_tn_0012" /><lb />

man Glen Wesley did the same after<lb />
18 faithful seasons.<lb />
Rookie goaltender Cam Ward<lb />
received the prestigious Conn Smythe<lb />
trophy in recognition of being the<lb />
MVP for the playoffs. Various aged<lb />
veterans each paraded around with<lb />
the Cup, including an injured Doug<lb />
Weight who could barely hoist<lb />
the Cup due to a right arm injury.<lb />
And it all happened a short hour<lb />
from the ECU campus. For the first<lb />
time in recent memory, playoff games<lb />
were broadcast via radio throughout<lb />
the region. Despite being clad in the<lb />
normal enemy colon of red and black,<lb />
there were actually a few Pirate fans<lb />
sprinkled among the RBC masses.<lb />
In a state where so many colleges<lb />
create battle lines in state politics and<lb />
even divide households, the Canes,<lb />
like the Carolina Panthers, are a<lb />
source for all North Carolinians to<lb />
unite. As evidenced Monday night,<lb />
the Tuesday parade and throughout<lb />
the playoff run, support they did.<lb />
Nineteen-thousand plus fans<lb />
packed Game 7 and provided an<lb />
electric atmosphere while standing<lb />
throughout. A couple thousand<lb />
more watched from a Jumbotron<lb />
outside while factions were content<lb />
with tailgating with makeshift tele-<lb />
visions in the back of pickup trucks.<lb />
Countless more packed bars and<lb />
crowded around TV sets throughout<lb />
the region.<lb />
What was beautiful was that the<lb />
state rooted for the same result, one<lb />
that came to fruition when Justin<lb />
Williams scored an empty net goal to<lb />
put Carolina up 3-1 with 1:01 left.<lb />
And for us down easterners, we<lb />
have every right to be just as proud,<lb />
just as Charlotte and Asheville do<lb />
to the west. The outskirts of Raleigh<lb />
may not have that wealthy contin-<lb />
gent as those inside the beltline, but<lb />
the cheers were just as loud, from all<lb />
directions.<lb />
Many insiders, experts and any-<lb />
body in the surrounding Hartford,<lb />
Conn, area were among nay-sayers<lb />
that thought a franchise smack dab<lb />
in the middle of North Carolina<lb />
wouldn't work. Critics cited the<lb />
smallish media market and the lack<lb />
of a consistent fan base. However,<lb />
Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos<lb />
continued to pump money into the<lb />
franchise and now ten years later,<lb />
has watched the dividends paid<lb />
exponentially.<lb />
Say what you want, but the Canes<lb />
won the title for the entire state.<lb />
Despite the newspaper columnist jeers<lb />
of what many still perceive as May-<lb />
berry, this is now Canes country. And<lb />
frankly, that's deserves a fist pump.<lb />

The 'Canes, playoff beards intact, crowd around the Stanley Cup.<lb />
the Carolina zone and wound up<lb />
making a helpless dive to block Wil-<lb />
liams' gimme into the goal that had<lb />
been vacated by Jussi Markkanen In<lb />
favor of an extra skater.<lb />
The crowd of nearly 19,000,<lb />
most of them standing throughout<lb />
the game, began chanting, "We<lb />
want the cup A minute later, they<lb />
had their wish. The champions<lb />
reside on Tobacco Road territory<lb />
best known for college basketball<lb />
and NASCAR and hockey finished<lb />
off its promising return from a<lb />
season-ruining lockout (dismal TV<lb />
ratings notwithstanding).<lb />
"It was (ust surreal<lb />
Brind'Amour said, explaining his<lb />
emotions. "It just kind of came to<lb />
a head when I realized that was it.<lb />
We were going to win<lb />
Weight didn't get to play after<lb />
injuring his shoulder in Game S.<lb />
But he donned his uniform and<lb />
came out for the ceremony, taking<lb />
his turn with that treasured piece<lb />
of silverware. He even managed to<lb />
get it over his head.<lb />
Ward wasn't even Carolina's<lb />
No. 1 goalie at the beginning of<lb />
the postseason, but he got the call<lb />
when Martin Gerber struggled in<lb />
an opening round against Mon-<lb />
treal. The rookie wound up win-<lb />
ning more games in the playoffs<lb />
(IS) than he did as Gerber's backup<lb />
during the regular season (14).<lb />
And, unlike all those older<lb />
teammates, Ward didn't have to<lb />
wait very long for his first cup.<lb />
"People say it's your rookie sea-<lb />
sons and chances are that it will come<lb />
again he said. "But you just never<lb />
know. You can't predict the future.<lb />
You've got to take care of the present<lb />
Ward did just that, knocking<lb />
aside Edmonton's best chance<lb />
to tie with just under 4 minutes<lb />
remaining. First, he stopped a shot<lb />
by Raffi Torres with the left pad.<lb />
Then, when Pisani got a stick on<lb />
the rebound, the goalie blocked<lb />
that one with his skate.<lb />
Torres bent over in agony as he<lb />
rounded the net, as if he realized<lb />
that Edmonton wouldn't have a<lb />
better chance to tie It up.<lb />
The Hurricanes were born in<lb />
the old World Hockey Association<lb />
as the Boston-based New England<lb />
Whalers, and entered the NHL in<lb />
1979 playing out of Hartford. Want-<lb />
ing a new arena, the team headed<lb />
south in 1997.<lb />
The first two years in Carolina<lb />
were a dismal experience, the team<lb />
forced to play 80 miles away in<lb />
Greensboro while the coliseum in<lb />
Raleigh was being built. So few fans<lb />
turned up in the beginning that the<lb />
upper deck was curtained off.<lb />
Now, the Hurricanes are cham-<lb />
pions, capitalizing on their second<lb />
trip to the finals. Four years ago,<lb />
they were beaten in five games by<lb />
heavy favorite Detroit.<lb />

(SID) Former Pirate quar-<lb />

the ECU football program as<lb />
a member of the coaching<lb />
staff after accepting an offen-<lb />
sive assistant's position accord-<lb />
ing to an announcement from<lb />
head coach Skip Holtz Tuesday.<lb />
Troth was a three-year letter-<lb />
winner at ECU, beginning with his<lb />
true freshman campaign in 2001<lb />
under former head coach Steve<lb />
Logan before transferring to NCAA<lb />
Division I-AA member Liberty<lb />
prior to the 2004 season.<lb />
After experiencing limited<lb />
playing time as David Garrard's<lb />
top understudy during his rookie<lb />
year, Troth took over the start-<lb />
ing job in 2002 as a sophomore<lb />
and turned in ECU's ninth-<lb />
best single-season passing yard<lb />
total in history after complet-<lb />
ing 177-of-359 passes for 2,315<lb />
yards and 15 scores in 12 games.<lb />
During the course of the year,<lb />
he reached the 300-yard, three-<lb />
TD milestone on two occasions<lb />
- throwing for 339 yards (25-of-46)<lb />
against USF on Oct. 19 before tal-<lb />
lying 369 (22-of-33) yards at Hous-<lb />
ton on Nov. 9 - which rank 14th<lb />
and sixth, respectively, on East<lb />
Carolina's all-time single-game<lb />
passing yard list. Troth ranked<lb />
among the top 60 signal-callers<lb />
in the nation by averaging 14.8<lb />
completions per game and stood<lb />
76th in total offense with a 175.4<lb />
yards-per-game average.<lb />
After passing for 380 yards in<lb />
just six games as a reserve in 2003<lb />
under first-year head coach John<lb />
Thompson, Troth opted to close<lb />
out his collegiate career at Liberty<lb />
the following season where he<lb />
threw for 694 yards as a part-time<lb />
starter for the Flames.<lb />
A three-time all-state, all-<lb />
county and all-conference selec-<lb />
tion at Vance High School in<lb />
Charlotte, Troth compiled 6,929<lb />
passing yards and 79 scoring<lb />
strikes during his prep career,<lb />
which at the time served as<lb />
Mecklenburg County records<lb />
and ranked as the sixth-high-<lb />
est passing total in state history.<lb />
Troth, who earned a bachelor's<lb />
degree in broadcast journalism<lb />
