Law proposed to improve campus safety SGA works<lb />
on second<lb />
goal for the<lb />
summer<lb />
Freshman could<lb />
be required to give<lb />
fingerprints<lb />
SARAH BELL<lb />
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF<lb />
As summer orientation sessions<lb />
begin, many students have been<lb />
visiting ECU's campus to take vari-<lb />
ous course placement tests, register<lb />
for classes and be photographed for<lb />
their OneCard after completing the<lb />
admissions process. A recently pro-<lb />
posed bill, however, might create<lb />
one more hurdle for next year's<lb />
new students to jump before being<lb />
accepted to ECU.<lb />
State Sen. Neal Hunt has pro-<lb />
posed legislation that would require<lb />
criminal background checks for all<lb />
students admitted into the UNC<lb />
System.<lb />
Hunt's proposal was motivated<lb />
by the deaths of Jessica Faulkner,<lb />
18, and Christen Naujoks, 22, two<lb />
UNC Wilmington students whose<lb />
accused killers were students who<lb />
concealed their criminal histories<lb />
from the university.<lb />
If passed during this session of<lb />
the General Assembly, the new law<lb />
would take effect this fall.<lb />
Each background check would<lb />
cost around $20, to be paid for by<lb />
the applicant. If admissions staff<lb />
found a potential problem, the<lb />
student could be required to submit<lb />
fingerprints as well.<lb />
Supporters of the bill hope that<lb />
it will help keep students safer by<lb />
preventing predatory criminals<lb />
from being admitted to UNC<lb />
System schools.<lb />
Requiring background checks<lb />
on all new potential students might<lb />
be easier said than done, however.<lb />
Leslie Winner, UNC system vice<lb />
president and general counsel, said<lb />
performing criminal background<lb />
checks on all incoming UNC System<lb />
students would be difficult to<lb />
implement and "not the most likely<lb />
way to improve campus safety<lb />

college applicant's criminal history<lb />
could yield at most only two years<lb />
worth of information regarding<lb />
their behavior.<lb />
Also, requiring criminal back-<lb />
ground checks might overload the<lb />
State Bureau of Investigation with<lb />
an additional 80,000 fingerprint<lb />
checks from April to August each<lb />
year, according to Winner.<lb />
Sergeant Jermaine Cherry of<lb />
ECU Crime Prevention thinks back-<lb />
ground checks would be beneficial<lb />
to campus security, and could help<lb />
protect students and faculty.<lb />

SGA begins to review<lb />
funding manual<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY .<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The legislative branch of SGA<lb />
has started working on their<lb />
second goal for the summer: rede-<lb />
fining or providing more clarity to<lb />
the funding manual.<lb />
The funding manual includes<lb />
the rules and guidelines that SGA<lb />
follows when deciding how much<lb />
money to allot an organization.<lb />
It also includes task that organi-<lb />
zations have to complete upon<lb />
receiving funding.<lb />
The main objective for this<lb />
goal is find out why there were<lb />
some complications relating to<lb />
funding last year and how much<lb />
the funding manual played a role<lb />
in this.<lb />
After determining the reasons<lb />
for the problems with funding<lb />
allotments, the SGA will brain-<lb />
storm for possible improvements<lb />
to be made to the manual.<lb />
A few congressmen already<lb />
have some suggestions that may<lb />
improve the process of funding<lb />
student organizations.<lb />
Jon Massachi, congressman,<lb />
suggested more communication<lb />
between the SGA and student<lb />
organizations is needed.<lb />
Many organizations do not<lb />
check their e-mail as frequently<lb />
as they need to, which delays the<lb />
process for getting funding to<lb />
these organizations, according to<lb />
Massachi.<lb />
Improving communication<lb />
between the two groups would<lb />
increase the awareness of dates<lb />
that organizations must have<lb />
paperwork or tasks completed to<lb />
receive their funding.<lb />
Nadia Payne, congresswoman,<lb />
suggested enforcing stricter dead-<lb />
lines for organizations to submit<lb />
documents in to SGA.<lb />

A Musical Fable of Broadway and<lb />
based on a story and characters of<lb />
Damon Runyon, this funny and romantic<lb />
comedy-considered by many to be the<lb />
perfect musical comedy-soars with<lb />
the spirit of Broadway as it introduces<lb />
us to a cast of vivid characters who<lb />
have become legends in the canon.<lb />
Everything works out in the end, thanks<lb />
to the machinations of Abe Burrows<lb />
and Jo Swerling's hilarious, fast-paced<lb />
book and Frank Loesser's bright,<lb />
brassy, immortal score, which takes<lb />
us from the heart of Times Square to<lb />
the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even<lb />
into the sewecs of New York City.<lb />
'The Fantasticks"<lb />
July 11-15<lb />
The original production opened on May<lb />
3,1960 at the Sullivan Street Playhouse<lb />
in New York's Greenwich Village<lb />
where it's still playing after 15,000<lb />
performances making The Fantasticks<lb />
is the longest-running musical in the<lb />
world! At the heart of its breathtaking<lb />
poetry and subtle sophistication is a<lb />
purity and simplicity that results in a<lb />
timeless fable of love that manages<lb />
to be nostalgic and universal at<lb />
the same time. With its minimal<lb />
costumes, small band and virtually<lb />
non-existent set, The Fantasticks<lb />
is an intimate show that engages<lb />
the audience's imagination and<lb />
showcases a strong ensemble cast.<lb />

One of the most explosive movie<lb />
musicals in recent memory now bursts<lb />
onto the live stage. When Ren and<lb />
his mother move from Chicago to a<lb />
small farming town, Ren is prepared<lb />
for the inevitable adjustment period<lb />
at his new high school. What he isn't<lb />
prepared for are the rigorous local<lb />
laws, including a ban on dancing. The<lb />
ban is the brainchild of a preacher<lb />
determined to exercise the control<lb />
over the town youth that he cannot<lb />
command in his own home. To the<lb />
rockin' rhythm of its Oscar-nominated<lb />
top 40 score (the soundtrack album<lb />
reached number one on the Billboard<lb />
charts and has sold over 15 million<lb />
copies!) to which new, dynamic<lb />
songs have been added, Footloose fe<lb />

Al-Zarqawi's death could accelerate progress<lb />
One battle won in the<lb />
War on Terror<lb />
LEE SCHWARZ<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has<lb />
finally been subdued by U.S. forces.<lb />
A figure of intense notoriety and<lb />
who drew enough attention to<lb />
garner a $25 million dollar bounty,<lb />
equal to the bounty for Osama bin<lb />
Laden, was the leader and main<lb />
recruiter of foreign Islamic fighters<lb />
into Iraq. A vast majority of U.S.<lb />
military casualties are attributed<lb />
to Zarqawi's men. His death by<lb />
aerial bombing is seen as a huge<lb />
victory against terrorism in Iraq.<lb />
Germany's foreign intelligence<lb />
chief, Ernst Uhrlau, said Zarqawi's<lb />
death "cannot be overestimated<lb />
While Zarqawi's death was a<lb />
feat for the U.S. and Iraqi military<lb />
the question is: Will his death serve<lb />
as a rallying cry for the remain-<lb />
ing Iraqi militants in Iraq? The i<lb />
insurgents are described as being<lb />
"Very, very smart. They don't<lb />
want to die by Sergeant Chris-<lb />
topher Schwarz of the U.S. Army<lb />
10th Mountain Division fighting<lb />
the insurgency in Iraq. There is<lb />
no question that they are debat-<lb />
ing their options in the midst of<lb />
severely weakened leadership.<lb />
It has been suggested that one<lb />
of Zarqawi's deputies will step in<lb />
to fill his shoes. Perhaps this new<lb />
deputy will run a terrorist opera-<lb />
tion that more closely follows the<lb />
goals of the international Al-Queda<lb />
organization. The suicide bomb-<lb />
ings of Iraqi Shiites and attempts to<lb />
plunge Iraq into civil war have mar-<lb />
ginalized Zarqawi from bin Laden<lb />
An Iraqi soldier guards the scene of the airstrike against Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Iraq<lb />
and from the support he used to<lb />
enjoy from among the rest of the<lb />
Iraqi insurgency. Zarqawi had<lb />
immense support when targeting<lb />
U.S. military locations and none<lb />
when attacking Iraqi Shiites.<lb />
The negative implications of<lb />
Zarqawi's rogue operations hurt<lb />
Al-Queda in the Islamic world so<lb />
perhaps his death was more of an<lb />
expulsion from Al-Queda than<lb />
it was an execution by the U.S.<lb />
military. It is possible that bin<lb />
Laden used the U.S. to eliminate<lb />
a political embarrassment using<lb />
the Al-Queda name and conse-<lb />
quently revoked Zarqawi's fran-<lb />
chise rights.<lb />
A terrorism analyst at the Gulf<lb />
Research Center in Dubai said<lb />
"Al-Qaeda headquarters will now<lb />
have more influence on the Iraqi<lb />
branch. At least, I think they'll<lb />
be in a far better position than<lb />
before In fact Ayman al-Zawahiri<lb />
bin Laden's number two man in<lb />
Al-Queda wrote a long letter to<lb />
Zarqawi telling him of his precipi-<lb />
tous place among Muslim opinion<lb />
makers. Zarqawi may have had<lb />
an even lower job approval rating<lb />
with Muslims than Bush. Strangely<lb />
enough an Al-Queda take over of<lb />
Iraq's insurgency may be stabiliz-<lb />
ing as Al-Queda has no wish for the<lb />
anarchy which would result from<lb />
an Iraqi civil war.<lb />
While Zarqawi's death will<lb />
affect recruiting there are other<lb />
insurgent groups independent of<lb />
Al-Queda who may be a more seri-<lb />
ous threat to the peace and stability<lb />
of Iraq. After news of Zarqawi's<lb />
death hit the news prices of crude<lb />
oil dropped $1 per barrel and the<lb />
Iraqi government capitalized on<lb />
the momentum by announcing the<lb />
selection of two cabinet members.<lb />

Amendment banning gay<lb />
marriage fails in Senate<lb />
A news conference was held Wednesday, June 7 after the Senate<lb />
voted to block a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriages.<lb />
, (KRT) While backers of a gay<lb />
marriage ban have triumphed at the<lb />
ballot box in state after state, they<lb />
failed Wednesday for the second<lb />
time in two years to pass a federal<lb />
constitutional amendment defin-<lb />
ing marriage as between a man<lb />
and woman, making little headway<lb />
since the Senate's last vote on the<lb />
issue in 2004.<lb />
"We're not going to stop until<lb />

woman is respected Kansas Repub-<lb />
lican Sam Brownback said.<lb />
Only 49 senators voted to move<lb />
ahead with the amendment on a<lb />
test vote Wednesday, far short of<lb />
the 60 needed to keep the measure<lb />
alive and the 67 needed to amend<lb />
the Constitution. A similar vote<lb />
in 2004 produced 48 votes for the<lb />
amendment.<lb />
Supporters of banning same-sex<lb />
marriage had hoped to get more<lb />
than 50 votes this time, especially<lb />
after the GOP picked up four Senate<lb />
seats in the 2004 election. But the<lb />
marriage amendment lost the sup-<lb />

criminal background checks on<lb />
incoming students would help<lb />
ECU to better comply with the<lb />

"The additional burden on<lb />
the manpower hours required to<lb />

Lange said.<lb />
Currently, ECU admissions does<lb />
background checks on prospective<lb />
students whose applications raise<lb />
red flags.<lb />
If a student indicates prior<lb />
convictions or pending charges<lb />
on his or her application, the<lb />
university requires documentation<lb />
of the offense for review, which then<lb />
undergoes a structured process of<lb />
evaluation by various departments.<lb />

A Musical Fable of Broadway and<lb />
based on a story and characters of<lb />

comedy-considered by many to be the<lb />
perfect musical comedy-soars with<lb />
the spirit of Broadway as it introduces<lb />
us to a cast of vivid characters who<lb />
have become legends in the canon.<lb />
Everything works out in the end, thanks<lb />
to the machinations of Abe Burrows<lb />
and Jo Swelling's hilarious, fast-paced<lb />
book and Frank Loesser's bright,<lb />
brassy, immortal score, which takes<lb />
us from the heart of Times Square to<lb />

"The Fantasticks"<lb />
July 11-15<lb />
The original production opened on May<lb />
3,1960 at the Sullivan Street Playhouse<lb />
in New York's Greenwich Village<lb />
where it's still playing after 15,000<lb />
performances making The Fantasticks<lb />
is the longest-running musical in the<lb />
world! At the heart of its breathtaking<lb />
poetry and subtle sophistication is a<lb />
purity and simplicity that results in a<lb />
timeless fable of love that manages<lb />
to be nostalgic and universal at<lb />
the same time. With its minimal<lb />
costumes, small band and virtually<lb />
non-existent set, The Fantasticks<lb />
is an intimate show that engages<lb />
the audience's imagination and<lb />
showcases a strong ensemble cast.<lb />

One of the most explosive movie<lb />
musicals in recent memory now bursts<lb />
onto the live stage. When Ren and<lb />
his mother move from Chicago to a<lb />
small farming town, Ren is prepared<lb />
for the inevitable adjustment period<lb />
at his new high school. What he isn't<lb />
prepared for are the rigorous local<lb />
laws, including a ban on dancing. The<lb />
ban is the brainchild of a preacher<lb />
determined to exercise the control<lb />
over the town youth that he cannot<lb />
command in his own home. To the<lb />
rockin' rhythm of its Oscar-nominated<lb />
top 40 score (the soundtrack album<lb />
reached number one on the Billboard<lb />
charts and has sold over 15 million<lb />
copies!) to which new, dynamic<lb />
songs have been added, Footloose <lb />
celebrates the wisdom of listening to<lb />
young people, guiding them with a<lb />
warm heart and an open mind.<lb />
Al-Zarqawi's death could accelerate progress<lb />
One battle won in the<lb />
War on Terror<lb />
LEE SCHWARZ<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has<lb />
finally been subdued by U.S. forces.<lb />
A figure of intense notoriety and<lb />
who drew enough attention to<lb />
garner a $25 million dollar bounty,<lb />
equal to the bounty for Osama bin<lb />
Laden, was the leader and main<lb />
recruiter of foreign Islamic fighters<lb />
into Iraq. A vast majority of U.S.<lb />
military casualties are attributed<lb />
to Zarqawi's men. His death by<lb />
aerial bombing is seen as a huge<lb />
victory against terrorism in Iraq.<lb />
Germany's foreign intelligence<lb />
chief, Ernst Uhrlau, said Zarqawi's<lb />
death "cannot be overestimated<lb />
While Zarqawi's death was a<lb />
feat for the U.S. and Iraqi military<lb />
the question is: Will his death serve<lb />
as a rallying cry for the remain-<lb />
ing Iraqi militants in Iraq? The<lb />
insurgents are described as being<lb />
"Very, very smart. They don't<lb />
want to die by Sergeant Chris-<lb />
topher Schwarz of the U.S. Army<lb />
10th Mountain Division fighting<lb />
the insurgency in Iraq. There is<lb />
no question that they are debat-<lb />
ing their options in the midst of<lb />
severely weakened leadership.<lb />
It has been suggested that one<lb />
of Zarqawi's deputies will step in<lb />
to fill his shoes. Perhaps this new<lb />
deputy will run a terrorist opera-<lb />
tion that more closely follows the<lb />
goals of the international Al-Queda<lb />
organization. The suicide bomb-<lb />
ings of Iraqi Shiites and attempts to<lb />
plunge Iraq into civil war have mar-<lb />
ginalized Zarqawi from bin Laden<lb />
An Iraqi soldier guards the scene of the airstrike against Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Iraq<lb />
and from the support he used to<lb />
enjoy from among the rest of the<lb />
Iraqi insurgency. Zarqawi had<lb />
immense support when targeting<lb />
U.S. military locations and none<lb />
when attacking Iraqi Shiites.<lb />
The negative implications of<lb />
Zarqawi's rogue operations hurt<lb />
Al-Queda in the Islamic world so<lb />
perhaps his death was more of an<lb />
expulsion from Al-Queda than<lb />
it was an execution by the U.S.<lb />
military. It is possible that bin<lb />
Laden used the U.S. to eliminate<lb />
a political embarrassment using<lb />
the Al-Queda name and conse-<lb />
quently revoked Zarqawi's fran-<lb />
chise rights.<lb />
A terrorism analyst at the Gulf<lb />
Research Center in Dubai said<lb />
"Al-Qaeda headquarters will now<lb />
have more influence on the Iraqi<lb />
branch. At least, I think they'll<lb />
be in a far better position than<lb />
before In fact Ayman al-Zawahiri<lb />
bin Laden's number two man in<lb />
Al-Queda wrote a long letter to<lb />
Zarqawi telling him of his precipi-<lb />
tous place among Muslim opinion<lb />
makers. Zarqawi may have had<lb />
an even lower job approval rating<lb />
with Muslims than Bush. Strangely<lb />
enough an Al-Queda take over of<lb />
Iraq's insurgency may be stabiliz-<lb />
ing as AUQueda has no wish for the<lb />
anarchy which would result from<lb />
an Iraqi civil war.<lb />
While Zarqawi's death will<lb />
affect recruiting there are other<lb />
insurgent groups independent of<lb />
Al-Queda who may be a more seri-<lb />
ous threat to the peace and stability<lb />
of Iraq. After news of Zarqawi's<lb />
death hit the news prices of crude<lb />
oil dropped $1 per barrel and the<lb />
Iraqi government capitalized on<lb />
the momentum by announcing the<lb />
selection of two cabinet members.<lb />

Amendment banning gay<lb />
marriage fails in Senate<lb />
A news conference was held Wednesday, June 7 after the Senate<lb />
voted to block a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriages.<lb />
, (KRT) While backers of a gay<lb />
marriage ban have triumphed at the<lb />
ballot box in state after state, they<lb />
failed Wednesday for the second<lb />
time in two years to pass a federal<lb />
constitutional amendment defin-<lb />

since the Senate's last vote on the<lb />
issue in 2004.<lb />
"We're not going to stop until<lb />

Only 49 senators voted to move<lb />
ahead with the amendment on a<lb />
test vote Wednesday, far short of<lb />
the 60 needed to keep the measure<lb />
alive and the 67 needed to amend<lb />
the Constitution. A similar vote<lb />
in 2004 produced 48 votes for the<lb />
amendment.<lb />
Supporters of banning same-sex<lb />
marriage had hoped to get more<lb />
than 50 votes this time, especially<lb />
after the GOP picked up four Senate<lb />
seats in the 2004 election. But1 the<lb />

If a student indicates prior<lb />

a<lb />
OPINION<lb />
editor@theeastcarolinian.com<lb />
SARAH BELL EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb />
In My Opinion<lb />
Other issues trump gay marriage<lb />
Congress should<lb />
concentrate on more<lb />
important matters<lb />
DUSTIN PITTMAN<lb />
OPINION COLUMNIST<lb />
Now calm down my Conserva-<lb />
tive friends, I haven't gone soft on<lb />
you, in no way do I support the<lb />
idea of gay marriage, I just believe it<lb />
should stay away from the Constitu-<lb />
tion. I think it's more important for<lb />
Congress to spend their time solidi-<lb />
fying the nation's position on other<lb />
issues rather than trying to score<lb />
points with ultra-Conservatives<lb />
like myself, no matter how much<lb />
they need any points they can get.<lb />
The United States Constitution<lb />
is a sacred document, changed only<lb />
27 times in its more than 200-year<lb />
history, and it shouldn't change a<lb />
again for a ban on gay marriage.<lb />
Any mention of gay marriage in the<lb />
Constitution would do only serve<lb />
to weaken the document which is<lb />
the paramount law of this great<lb />
nation. Our Congress has many<lb />
other options it can exercise to<lb />
address this problem.<lb />
Conservative thinkers who<lb />
disagree with me on this issue say<lb />
that a constitutional amendment<lb />
banning gay marriage is the only<lb />
way that we can keep it out of the<lb />
hands of our court system, but I<lb />
say there's another way: limit the<lb />
jurisdiction of the court. This is<lb />
a power of Congress which has<lb />
seldom, if ever, been used, but it is<lb />
a power nonetheless. If we limit the<lb />
Court's ability to hear cases related<lb />
to these issues, they will not have<lb />
the opportunity to write law, plain<lb />
and simple.<lb />
Activist judges have forever<lb />
changed the laws of our nation by<lb />
legislating from the bench and a<lb />
constitutional amendment banning<lb />
gay marriage will only serve to fix<lb />
this one problem. I, for one, think it<lb />
is more important for us to exercise<lb />
the power of the plenty against our<lb />
activist judges and prevent them<lb />
from doing as they wish with the<lb />
laws of our nation. The Ninth Circuit<lb />
Court of Appeals is widely known,<lb />
and sometimes praised, as being the<lb />
most activist of our nation's court<lb />
system. Our Congress created it, and<lb />
they should dissolve it. By restruc-<lb />
turing the Court system, Congress<lb />
could remove from office, the legal<lb />
way, the entire Ninth Circuit and<lb />
replace them with judges appointed<lb />
by President George W. Bush, who<lb />
despite his many flaws as a Conser-<lb />
vative, has done a wonderful job in<lb />
appointing strong traditionalists to<lb />
the bench. By removing the Ninth<lb />
Circuit and courts like it, Congress<lb />
could reshape the system so that we<lb />
will not have to worry about activist<lb />
judges changing laws, because tradi-<lb />
tionalists would hold the benches.<lb />
But instead of doing what<lb />
would be difficult and, for some,<lb />
politically blackening, those we<lb />
elected to office decided that they<lb />
would try and pull the wool over<lb />
our eyes by attempting to ban gay<lb />
marriage using the Constitution<lb />
so we might praise them as great<lb />
Conservatives and vote for them<lb />
in the fall. I'm not fooled. Congress<lb />
could have done more, but they<lb />
were scared that it would upset<lb />
a few. It still remains true that a<lb />
majority of Americans believe gay<lb />
marriage is wrong, and regardless<lb />
of your position on the issue, you<lb />
must recognize one thing: America<lb />
is a majority rule society regardless<lb />
of whether or not what the major-<lb />
ity of Americans believe is moral<lb />
or immoral; it is the belief of the<lb />
majority. We have a responsibility<lb />
to protect the minority on any<lb />
issue, but we can't let that minority<lb />
guide policy.<lb />
A majority of Americans voted<lb />
for a Republican president and<lb />
voted more Republicans into the<lb />
Congress than they did Demo-<lb />
crats, because they believe that it<lb />
was the Republican Party which<lb />
could better guide the future of<lb />
America, and nothing could be<lb />
truer. The Republican Party can<lb />
bring success to America, but they<lb />
have to remember the principles for<lb />
which they stand. We didn't elect<lb />
Republicans to office so they could<lb />
increase the size of government<lb />
and increase interest rates every few<lb />
months. We elected Republicans<lb />
to strengthen America by allow-<lb />
ing it to grow in the free market.<lb />
As this was a source of major<lb />
debate over the past week I've had<lb />
a lot of time to think about how I<lb />
really feel about gay marriage, and<lb />
I've realized I really don't care.<lb />
At a time when our nation is<lb />
at war, attempting to provide the<lb />
citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan<lb />
with the very freedoms we forget<lb />
we have, I don't care about gay mar-<lb />
riage. At a time when the average<lb />
college student is racking up more<lb />
than $18,000 in debt while interest<lb />
rates continue to increase, I don't<lb />
care. At a time when the price of<lb />
oil has shot over $73 a barrel and<lb />
the price of gas is inching closer to<lb />
$3 a gallon every day, I don't care.<lb />
And at a time when our nation<lb />
is finally awakening from the oil<lb />
rich slumber we've had for way<lb />
too long, and our citizens are beg-<lb />
ging the government to help us rid<lb />
ourselves of a dependence on oil,<lb />
I don't care about gay marriage.<lb />
Our Congress should get to work<lb />
on the issues that matter, and I'm<lb />
talking to the Republicans and the<lb />
Democrats. Some politicians, on<lb />
both sides of the isle, have become<lb />
way too cozy in the job that they<lb />
have and it's due time we give them<lb />
a shock. If they're going to waste<lb />
time talking about an issue of no<lb />
real importance to America, vote<lb />
them out of office.<lb />

honor. Don't hate.<lb />
Why is it that when you are home<lb />
for the summer, your parents want<lb />
to take family trips everywhere.<lb />
Including Home Depot and the gro-<lb />
cery store can't I just stay home<lb />
and not be dragged along?<lb />
Oh please, the only message that<lb />
swearing gets across is that you are<lb />
in desperate need of a thesaurus.<lb />
Is anyone else ready for Lil Jon to<lb />
just go away?<lb />
I'm an 18-year-old with an earring<lb />
and people basically expect that<lb />
by being jerks they'll entice me to<lb />
talk back to them. When I'm just<lb />
as courteous and civil as always,<lb />
even empathizing with them ("I<lb />
understand why you feel that way,<lb />
Sir") they'll quickly get embarrassed<lb />
as they realize they're being out-<lb />
matured by an 18-year-old with an<lb />
earring.<lb />
Does anyone else miss the sounds of<lb />
the clock tower and the trains to tell<lb />
the time all over Greenville when<lb />
we are gone for the summer?<lb />
Retail sucks. That should be reason<lb />
enough for anyone to want to go<lb />
to college.<lb />
You think the drivers in Greenville<lb />
can't drive try California.<lb />
6-6-06 came and went and the<lb />
world didn't stop spinning. What<lb />
hoax are we going to look forward<lb />
to next?<lb />
Rain, rain, go away come again<lb />
some other day 'Cause I am sick<lb />
and tired of these thunderstorms!<lb />
Why is it that after three years,<lb />
when you finally find out that she<lb />
is interested, and you pursue it, she<lb />
just jerks you around and never calls<lb />
you back? Doesn't the phone have<lb />
numbers on it for a reason?<lb />
If this random kid asks me one more<lb />
time if he can get on the computer<lb />
I am going to slug him!<lb />
I really really hate when I am<lb />
hungry and I hit a restaurant and<lb />
the food sucks! I'm left still freakin'<lb />
hungry (my blood sugar dropping)<lb />
and out 20 bucks again it just<lb />
sucks!<lb />
When the girl you are dating drinks<lb />
more than you, it is quite pos-<lb />
sible that she is a man. I probably<lb />
shouldn't date himher anymore.<lb />
It may be a problem when Friday<lb />
night is your night off from drinking.<lb />
OK why is it the City of Greenville<lb />
is so concerned about grass height<lb />
but not the dumpy houses that I<lb />
wish were hidden by tall grass so I<lb />
wouldn't have to look at them! Per-<lb />
haps the Greenville PD should be<lb />
spotting criminals instead of weeds<lb />
over 12 inches high!<lb />
I believe in miracles. Where did you<lb />
come from? You sexy thing, you.<lb />
Why is it that I see an ECU police car<lb />
parked in the Chancellor's driveway<lb />
each and every night?! Don't the<lb />
ECU cops have something better to<lb />
do than to provide the Chancellor<lb />
with a private security guard? Seri-<lb />
ously though, ECU Police, why not<lb />
patrol the whole campus area like<lb />
you're supposed to do?<lb />
I hate when my employers refuse to<lb />
give me work to do at work!<lb />
If you have more than 500 pictures<lb />
on Facebook.com, you should think<lb />
about seeking professional help.<lb />
Why do some of the people I enjoy<lb />
most have to run away to California?<lb />
Life is a circus, don't be a clown.<lb />

Nothing less than<lb />
entertainment from this<lb />
summer release<lb />
CAROLYN SCANDURA<lb />
FEATURES EDITOR<lb />
Summer is meant to be a time<lb />
of rest and relaxation but most ECU<lb />
students find themselves plagued<lb />
by school and work this Summer.<lb />
Taking some time out of your hectic<lb />
schedule this summer is a must,<lb />
even if it is only to take a trip to the<lb />
local theater to see the new Disney-<lb />
Pixar film, Cars.<lb />
I have always been a sucker for<lb />
Pixar films. I can watch Toy Story<lb />
over and over and still be enter-<lb />
tained by some of the incredible<lb />
hidden animation or those quirky<lb />
little lines that you didn't notice<lb />
the first 37 times you watched it.<lb />
The same can be said for A Bug's<lb />
Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters. Inc. and<lb />
The Incredibles. All of these movies<lb />
have supplied entertainment to<lb />
children, both big and small, since<lb />
their releases. I never would have<lb />
thought that Pixar could top Finding<lb />
Nemo, which is my favorite movie<lb />
in the world until now.<lb />
Any movie that can keep me<lb />
entertained and laughing my head<lb />
off after working two 12-hour shifts,<lb />
has got to be a great one. Without<lb />
giving away why this film was so<lb />
heart warming, let's run through<lb />
what actually happened.<lb />
After the 30 minutes of pre-<lb />
views, it was time for the custom-<lb />
Tow Mater" with the voice of Larry the Cable Guy and "Lightning McQueen" enjoying their time together.<lb />
ary, no talking, Pixar short film<lb />
before the feature. Before Cars,<lb />
the film was called One Man Band,<lb />
which was a great beginning to a<lb />
great movie. The animation was<lb />
crisp and clear and the story was<lb />
probably the best yet.<lb />
Cars begins in a NASCAR race<lb />
of some sort, where the three<lb />
main contenders are "Lighting<lb />
McQueen" the young hot-shot<lb />
rookie who is played by Owen<lb />
Wilson, "The King" who is played<lb />
by none other than The King<lb />
himself, Richard Petty and "Chick<lb />
Hicks" who is played by Michael<lb />
Keaton. The three cars are racing for<lb />
the Piston Cup and amazingly all<lb />
tie for first place. A tiebreaker race<lb />
is set in California and the cars are<lb />
all anxious to get there first.<lb />
Lightning McQueen, who is<lb />
embarrassed by his sponsor, Rust-<lb />
Eze, wants to become the new racer<lb />
for Dynoco after The King retires.<lb />
Dynoco has helicopters, beautiful<lb />
big rigs and a pit crew anyone would<lb />
die for. Lightning is willing to do<lb />
anything to be at the top. Here is<lb />
where the problems start.<lb />
Lightning and his personal big<lb />
rig, Mack, voiced by John Ratzen-<lb />
berger, who has been in just about<lb />
every other Pixar movie ever made,<lb />
head for California in an attempt to<lb />
be the first team to the race. Long<lb />
story short, Lightning gets lost in<lb />
a town called Radiator Springs in<lb />
the famous Carburetor County<lb />
along Route 66. While in town,<lb />
Lightening meets a great group of<lb />
locals after completely destroying<lb />
their town and being sentenced to<lb />
fix it. Some of these locals include<lb />
Tow Mater played by Larry the<lb />
Cable Guy, Sally the Porsche played<lb />
by Bonnie Hunt and Doc Hudson<lb />
played by Paul Newman.<lb />
At this point, it would be unfair<lb />
to say anything more about the<lb />
story, the characters or the events<lb />
in the movie because I would much<lb />
rather everyone go out and see for<lb />
themselves. This is quite possibly<lb />
one of the best, most entertaining<lb />
movies I have seen since Finding<lb />
Nemo, which is a lot coming from<lb />
the girl who had the Finding Nemo<lb />
DVD Collectors Edition at midnight<lb />
the day it was released.<lb />
The animation in the film<lb />
made you feel like you were there<lb />
with all of the cars and the music<lb />
was stimulating and appropriate<lb />
for each scene. This laugh out loud<lb />
film had quite a bit of adult humor<lb />
that the typical six-year-old wuld<lb />

Hulk Hogan<lb />
He just keeps coming<lb />
back for more<lb />
MEREDITH STEWART<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Terrence "Terry" Gene Bollea,<lb />
otherwise known as Hulk Hogan,<lb />
has been proclaimed to be the big-<lb />
gest attraction wrestling has ever<lb />
seen. Growing up, Hogan played<lb />
bass guitar in several Florida-based<lb />
rock bands, including Ruckus and<lb />
Infinity's End.<lb />
He played in local bars, where<lb />
wrestlers would go to hang out,<lb />
and caught the attention of former<lb />
top drawing wrestler Jack Brisco<lb />
and his brother Gerald who con-<lb />
vinced Hogan to give wrestling a<lb />
shot. He trained for almost two<lb />
years and finally had his first<lb />
wrestling match in Tallahassee,<lb />
Fla on August 19, 1977.<lb />
In 1979 Hogan made his debut<lb />
in the World Wrestling Federa-<lb />
tion, and was given the name<lb />
"The Incredible Hulk Hogan He<lb />
wrestled three matches and won<lb />
them all. One month later, he<lb />
made his debut in Madison Square<lb />
Garden and in only 11 min-<lb />
utes and 12 seconds, he defeated<lb />
Ted DiBiase.<lb />
He continued to wow his fans<lb />
and began drawing crowds of all<lb />
ages. In 1981, Sylvester Stallone<lb />
personally asked him to be in<lb />
Rocky III. It was against the rules<lb />
of the World Wide Wrestling Fed-<lb />
eration, but Hogan took the offer<lb />
anyway and was fired.<lb />
He began to wrestle with the<lb />
American Wrestling Association<lb />
and later went on to wrestle on<lb />
the Japan Pro Wrestling teams. He<lb />
became so famous in Japan that<lb />
he even recorded an album there.<lb />
Fans could not seem to get<lb />
enough of Hulk Hogan and by<lb />
1983 he made a dramatic return<lb />
to the WWF. As his fans, referred<lb />
to as "Hulkamaniacs carried<lb />
him through the hard times (a<lb />
steroid scandal) and cheered<lb />
him through the great ones,<lb />
Hogan went on to win 15 world<lb />

this and the story's moral: Slowing<lb />

help but please.<lb />
Cars was actually the first<lb />
movie directed by John Lasseter<lb />
(who directed both Toy Story and<lb />
A Bug's Life) since Toy Story 2. The<lb />
fact that he was a part of this movie<lb />
should make any Pixar lover stop<lb />
reading right now and get to the<lb />
theater. Cars raced to first place at<lb />
the box office this weekend with a<lb />
$62.8 million debut, maintaining<lb />
Disney-Pixar's undefeated record<lb />
with a seventh straight hit.<lb />
I recommend that if you have<lb />
any free time at all and an extra<lb />

CHRISTOPHER STEVENSON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The Middle East is a place of<lb />
history and conflict filled with<lb />
a richness of religion that has<lb />
impacted nearly the entire planet.<lb />
Heather Crisco, who graduated<lb />
from ECU in 2004 with a double<lb />
BA in anthropology and religious<lb />
studies, is currently a MA student at<lb />
the American University in Cairo,<lb />
Egypt in the sociology-anthropol-<lb />
ogy department.<lb />
(Irisco went on a student abroad<lb />
trip with ECU to the Middle East<lb />
area. Crisco was so impacted by her<lb />
student abroad trip to the Middle<lb />
East that she decided to stay. Crisco<lb />
spent a great deal of time on her<lb />
trip in the Palestinian and Israeli<lb />
areas.<lb />
Americans are not completely<lb />
alien to the Middle East environ-<lb />
ment. Americans hear mainly nega-<lb />
tive things about the Middle East<lb />
through filtered news stations like<lb />
CNN. Americans hear about other<lb />
Americans being taken hostage by<lb />
extremists and terrorist. Americans<lb />
hear about the suicide bomb attacks<lb />
on a weekly basis. It is not a warm,<lb />
fuzzy feeling that comes to mind.<lb />
Crisco wrote by e-mail about<lb />
this very situation but shared a<lb />
stark contrast to what the media<lb />
mainly filters to Americans con-<lb />
cerning the Middle East.<lb />
"Before coming to Egypt, I was<lb />
faced with many concerns (espe-<lb />
cially from family and friends)<lb />
about being the target of hatred and<lb />
violence because I am an American<lb />
and a female. I've found that this<lb />
is a huge stereotype among many<lb />
Americans that is just that a ste-<lb />
reotype. I've not once during any of<lb />
my travels throughout the Middle<lb />
East, experienced negativity, hos-<lb />
tility or threats of danger because<lb />
of my nationality. If anything, I<lb />
have been welcomed to the point<lb />
that it almost becomes irritating<lb />

to a variety of people in each<lb />

Palestinians. Crisco emphasized<lb />
that the Palestinian people are<lb />
in favor of promoting peace and<lb />
democracy. Crisco wrote that<lb />
though the political group Hamas,<lb />
who is thought of as a terrorist<lb />
organization by much of the world,<lb />
officially has not committed any<lb />
acts of violence since being elected<lb />
and are actually calling for the<lb />
violence to stop.<lb />
Crisco has been influenced<lb />
greatly by her trip abroad.<lb />
"Because of my PalestineIsrael<lb />
trip specifically, I have definitely<lb />
changed. I have changed in that,<lb />
after meeting with government<lb />
officials, university officials and<lb />
peace-keepers from both sides; it<lb />
has become clear to me that some-<lb />
thing has to be done. Voices need<lb />
to be heard and not only the voice<lb />
of Israel Crisco wrote.<lb />
It's no secret that the United<lb />
States' government favors Israel<lb />
over Palestine. Our government<lb />
gives Israel millions of dollars and<lb />
military equipment on a continual<lb />
basis, which is one reason why<lb />
Israel has the third most powerful<lb />
air force in the world. Even Ameri-<lb />
can residents, for the most part,<lb />
seem to favor Israel over Palestine.<lb />
The United States has a huge Chris-<lb />
tian population, and the Christian<lb />
belief is that the people of Israel are<lb />
God's chosen people. The question<lb />
to ask is does this religious connec-<lb />
tion with Israel blind Americans<lb />
from seeing the conflict situation<lb />
between Israel and Palestine clearly<lb />
and in a non-biased manner?<lb />
Crisco does think that there is<lb />
a huge misconception some Ameri-<lb />
cans tend to share about the Israeli<lb />
and Palestinian conflict.<lb />
"Americans are unfortunately<lb />
only exposed to a censored media<lb />
which does not always portray<lb />
the conflict in a fair manner, thus<lb />
many Americans tend to think that<lb />
the Palestinians are nothing but a<lb />
group of militant, fundamentalist<lb />
Muslims who are attacking Israel<lb />
non-stop. This is absolutely not<lb />
true, and if anything, it is Israel<lb />
doing most of the attacking<lb />
Crisco wrote.<lb />
After finishing school, Crisco<lb />
hopes to eventually have a job that<lb />
at least keeps her coming back to<lb />
the Middle East. Many students like<lb />
Crisco go on student abroad trips<lb />
every year for the feeling of adven-<lb />
ture and for the educational aspects<lb />
that contribute to an unforgettable<lb />
experience.<lb />
Calvin Mercer, who is the<lb />
co-director of the religious study<lb />
program at ECU, is the one who got<lb />
Crisco interested in taking the trip<lb />
abroad to the Middle East.<lb />
"I know students often sign<lb />
up for study abroad because of the<lb />
sights and adventure, but most<lb />
students find out that the physical<lb />
travel is really about expanding the<lb />
internal journey of the mind and<lb />

ECU, ISP Sports<lb />
announce new flagship<lb />
radio stations for FM, AM<lb />
ERIC GILMORE<lb />
SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
ECU fans will be adjusting<lb />
their dials to a new radio frequency<lb />
come football season. ECU and<lb />
ISP Sports announced a five-year<lb />
agreement with Classic Rock 106.5<lb />
(WSFL-FM) which will enable the<lb />
100,000-watt station to become the<lb />
football FM flagship for the Pirate<lb />
ISP Radio Network.<lb />
ISP Sports, a marketing firm<lb />
based out of Winston-Salem,<lb />
recently inked a deal with ECU<lb />
to operate the marketing arm of<lb />
the athletic department, which<lb />
includes multi-media broadcast<lb />
rights. Thus, ISP Sports and athletic<lb />
director Terry Holland wanted to<lb />
find a station with the largest pos-<lb />
sible coverage area.<lb />
WSFL's will emerge as the lone<lb />
flagship FM signal, which reaches<lb />
Wake<lb />
County to<lb />
the west and nearly<lb />
the entire North Carolina<lb />
coastline to the south and east,<lb />
will allow Pirate fans to receive a<lb />
new extended level of coverage.<lb />
However, the drama falls on the<lb />
AM dial. Talk 1070 (WNCT-AM)<lb />
will serve as the AM flagship for<lb />
the network and provide exclusive<lb />
coverage of ECU men's basketball<lb />
and baseball. After a long period<lb />
of anticipation, Talk 1070 recently<lb />
amped their wattage up to 50,000<lb />
during the day, but powers down to<lb />
10,000-watts at night. According<lb />
to their Web site, they also operate<lb />
on an HD signal.<lb />
Talk 1070 is managed by Hinton<lb />
Media Group and more specifically<lb />
Henry Hinton. Hinton, a large<lb />
Pirate Club contributor, previously<lb />
owned New East Communications,<lb />
which included the former flagship<lb />
station 98.3 (WCZI-FM). Talk 1070<lb />
and Classic Rock 106.5 are both<lb />
owned by Beasley Broadcasting<lb />
Group, a large media conglomer-<lb />
ate.<lb />
"Having always had a strong<lb />
presence in the eastern Carolina<lb />
market, we are delighted that Clas-<lb />
sic Rock 106.5 and Talk 1070 will<lb />
be the home to Pirates' football<lb />
George G. Beasley, Chairman and<lb />
CEO said in a press release.<lb />
"Under the leadership of Terry<lb />
Holland and his team, ECU is<lb />
poised for a great future and we<lb />
want to be a part of it<lb />
Confused? In essence, Pirate<lb />
Radio 1250 (WGHB-AM) and 930<lb />
(WDLX-AM) (think T-shirts) was<lb />
carved out of the deal and will no<lb />
longer be permitted to cover any<lb />
network games, programming or<lb />
coaches' shows. Pirate Radio, who<lb />
has carried games for the past three<lb />
years, sports two 5,000-watt sta-<lb />
tions that span from Wilson to the<lb />
Outer Banks.<lb />
"Although ISP Sports and ECU<lb />
made the deci-<lb />
sion to end our<lb />
partnership, it does<lb />
not mean we will pack up<lb />
our bags or turn dur backs on<lb />
ECU stated an open letter reaction<lb />
co-authored by Troy Dreyfus and<lb />
Jonathan Ellerbe, both managing<lb />
partners of the Pirate Media Group,<lb />
which owns Pirate Radio.<lb />
"Are we disappointed? Yes. Are<lb />
we devastated? No<lb />
Because of a deep divide between<lb />
ECU's fans regarding the AM split<lb />
between Talk 1070 and Pirate Radio's<lb />
two stations, Holland felt the need<lb />
to issue an open letter released<lb />
on the ECU athletic Web site.<lb />
"I do not pretend to understand<lb />
all the "history" involved with the<lb />
various radio entities who have<lb />
carried Pirate athletic events Hol-<lb />
land said in his opening paragraph.<lb />
"Neither am I burdened with ties<lb />
to any of these entities that would<lb />
make me respond emotionally<lb />
instead of attempting to do what <lb />

'Canes one win from Cup<lb />
RON CLEMENTS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Tonight the Carolina Hur-<lb />
ricanes go for their first Stanley<lb />
Cup Trophy in franchise history.<lb />
It took me awhile to become part<lb />
of the "Caniac Nation but my<lb />
enthusiasm had to develop from<lb />
something.<lb />
Growing up in Wisconsin, I was<lb />
a one-team fan depending on the<lb />
sport. The Milwaukee Brewers for<lb />
baseball, the Milwaukee Bucks for<lb />
basketball and, of course, the Green<lb />
Bay Packers for football. There is no<lb />
NHL team in Wisconsin, so I had<lb />
no real loyalties. I pulled for the<lb />
Minnesota North Stars during their<lb />
Stanley Cup Finals run in 1991, but<lb />
not passionately.<lb />
Two years later 1 was living in<lb />
Southern California and pulled for<lb />
the Wayne Gretzky-led Los Angeles<lb />
Kings to win the Cup, only to see<lb />
them fall in five games to the Mon-<lb />
treal Canadiens and the evil Patrick<lb />
Roy. It was then that I took a real<lb />
interest in hockey, at the age of 19.<lb />
The Kings became my team.<lb />
When 1996 rolled around, I<lb />
found myself cheering for Pat-<lb />
rick Roy and his new team, the<lb />
Colorado Avalanche. It was the first<lb />
season in Colorado for the former<lb />
Quebec Nordiques and they swept<lb />
Florida to bring Lord Stanley's Cup<lb />
to Denver. I just happened to be in<lb />
Denver for the decisive triple-over-<lb />
time Game 4 and I can still picture<lb />
Uwe Krupp's shot from the blue line<lb />
getting by John Vanbiesbrouck for<lb />
the game's only goal. It was one of<lb />
the best games I have ever watched,<lb />
with a combined 125 shots on goal,<lb />
and the Avalanche became my<lb />
team number two.<lb />
I went to my first NHL game in<lb />
1997 in L.A. It was Gretzky's first<lb />
game back in Los Angeles, as he was<lb />
a member of the New York Rangers.<lb />
The Rangers won the game, which<lb />
disappointed most of the fans inside<lb />
the GreatVestern Forum that night,<lb />
but it was a memorable experience<lb />

RddlO from page 11<lb />
is right for ECU while trying to be<lb />
fair to everyone involved<lb />
Holland went on to cite reasons<lb />
behind the five-year agreement. He<lb />
included that "the Pirate radio net-<lb />
work had of recent years has had,<lb />
at best, pitiful night-time coverage<lb />
of Pitt County Jeff Charles, the<lb />
play-by-play voice for football and<lb />
basketball, used to be the director of<lb />
electronic media before ISP Sports<lb />
came on board in January.<lb />
Holland wrote that ECU has had<lb />
a one-year game broadcast agree-<lb />
ment with 1250 for the past three<lb />
years and 1070 the last two years<lb />
with everyone's understanding that<lb />
at some point ECU needed a large<lb />
FM flagship station for its network.<lb />
According to Holland, N.C.<lb />
State stepped in and took the oppor-<lb />
tunity instead. When ECU got word<lb />
that the Wolfpack had taken the<lb />
opportunity, the unnamed 25,000-<lb />
watt FM was in serious negotiations<lb />
with 1250-AM for an agreement<lb />
that would have eliminated 1070-<lb />
AM frdm all Pirate broadcasts.<lb />
"ECU has been loyal to both<lb />
partners and has demonstrated<lb />
a willingness to do everything<lb />
reasonable (except to com-<lb />
promise ECU'S future) to keep<lb />
both included for game broad-<lb />
casts Holland included.<lb />
Holland also added that the<lb />
athletic department would assist<lb />
both radio stations with their daily<lb />
programming. However, fans have<lb />
now questioned the Holland's lack<lb />
of loyalty to Pirate Radio, who<lb />
bailed them out during troubled<lb />
times three short years ago.<lb />
"As we have said many times<lb />
on our airwaves, 'It's tough to be a<lb />
Pirate Dreyfus and Ellerbe's letter<lb />
read. "But as true Pirates who bleed<lb />
purple and gold, we vow to finish<lb />
what we started and will not let<lb />
adversity slow us down or divert us<lb />

Hockey paving way on Tobacco Road<lb />
Rod Brind'Amour's hat choice highlights deeply rooted college loyalities.<lb />
(AP) Among the raucous<lb />
crowd of Carolina Hurricanes fans,<lb />
some wild cheers turned to boos<lb />
whenever North Carolina basket-<lb />
ball coach Roy Williams showed<lb />
up on the scoreboard. Ditto for<lb />
new North Carolina State coach<lb />
Sidney Lowe.<lb />
In North Carolina, such hard-<lb />
wood loyalties are passed down in<lb />
families like heirlooms.<lb />
But with the Hurricanes one<lb />
win away from bringing the first<lb />
major professional team champion-<lb />
ship to North Carolina, the rabid<lb />
'Caniacs that fill the RBC Center,<lb />
and the ticketless fans who party<lb />
outside as the game goes on, have<lb />
embraced hockey as they might a<lb />
NASCAR champion or ACC MVP.<lb />
Argue they might and do about<lb />
everything else, fans here are proving<lb />
a Tar Heel can love a game played on<lb />
the ice. So can a Demon Decon, a Blue<lb />
Devil, those running with a Wolfpack<lb />
or sailing with the Pirates.<lb />
"Everybody for the longest<lb />
time would argue that North Caro-<lb />
lina was all about basketball<lb />
said East Carolina football coach<lb />
Skip Holtz, who took time off<lb />
from preparing the Pirates for next<lb />
season to attended Game 2 of the<lb />
finals against the Edmonton Oilers<lb />
in Raleigh.<lb />
"I think this is a great sports<lb />
state he said. "They follow it,<lb />
they're rabid, they're animated.<lb />
They're great sports fans, and<lb />
they're going to follow a winner<lb />
Fans on Tobacco Road have had<lb />
plenty of practice. Duke, North<lb />
Carolina and North Carolina State<lb />
have combined to win nine NCAA<lb />
basketball championships and<lb />
create fiercely loyal fan bases, as<lb />
have fellow ACC member Wake<lb />
Forest and chip-on-the-shoulder<lb />
East Carolina.<lb />
Fans live in the same neighbor-<lb />
hoods, eat at the same restaurants<lb />
and send their kids to the same<lb />
schools. They sometimes even share<lb />
the same residence, making "A<lb />
House Divided" bumper stickers a<lb />
staple in two different shades of blue.<lb />
Udf16S from page 12<lb />
for me and my affinity for the<lb />
sport grew exponentially. Just a few<lb />
months later, I relocated to Jackson-<lb />
ville, North Carolina and I was again<lb />
living in a state without hockey.<lb />
Thankfully that lasted just a<lb />
few months. In an awkward and<lb />
sudden move, the Hartford Whal-<lb />
ers left their home in Connecticut<lb />
and moved to Greensboro. I hated<lb />
this move initially and cursed the<lb />
new Carolina Hurricanes. They had<lb />
just become another northern team<lb />
to migrate south, following the<lb />
Winnipeg Jets (Phoenix Coyotes)<lb />
and Minnesota North Stars (Dallas<lb />
Stars) to name just a couple. I felt<lb />
bad for the fans in Hartford and the<lb />
move was poorly executed, remind-<lb />
ing me of the Baltimore Colts' mid-<lb />
night move to Indianapolis.<lb />
The new Hurricanes had no<lb />
real home, playing in the small<lb />
Greensboro Coliseum to minimal<lb />
and hockey-ignorant fans in its<lb />
first season. Then a funny thing<lb />
happened. In Carolina's second<lb />
season, they made the playoffs and<lb />
the fans showed up. The Hurricanes<lb />
created "Hockey U" to educate their<lb />
new southern fan base on the rules<lb />
and terminology of the game. What<lb />
they should have done prior to the<lb />
move, they did during the playoff<lb />
run and it worked.<lb />
The Hurricanes sold out the Col-<lb />
iseum while winning, but lost to the<lb />
Boston Bruins in the first round of<lb />
the playoffs. I was fortunate enough<lb />
to attend two of those playoff games<lb />
and, I'll admit, I was pulling for<lb />
Boston, due in large part to their<lb />
goalie - former L.A. King, Byron<lb />
Dafoe. What I saw in the Coliseum,<lb />
with these Carolina fans embracing<lb />
the game that I grew to love, made<lb />
me respect the team and its fan base.<lb />
The next season the 'Canes<lb />
found a new home in Raleigh and I<lb />
went to another game, against the<lb />
Rangers. I grew fonder of the Hur-<lb />
ricanes with each season and really<lb />
jumped on their bandwagon in 2002<lb />
when Carolina reached the Stanley<lb />
Cup Finals. Even former Whaler<lb />
fans wanted the 'Canes to win, if<lb />
for no other reason than the fact<lb />
that they were playing the league's<lb />
most-hated team, the Detroit Red<lb />
Wings. I have always despised<lb />
the Red Wings (Blackhawks, too)<lb />
- blame it on the NFL's NFC North.<lb />
Carolina lost those Stanley Cup<lb />
Finals, but just four years later, the<lb />
Hurricanes find themselves just<lb />
one game away from hoisting Lord<lb />
Stanley's Cup. Like Ron Francis four<lb />
years ago, it is the veteran leadership<lb />
of Rod Brind'Amour that has led the<lb />
'Canes to Lord Stanley's doorstep.<lb />
Brind'Amour and Head Coach<lb />
Peter Laviolette have kept the<lb />
Hurricanes calm, patient and<lb />
focused. The unflappable Hurri-<lb />
canes rebounded from their Game<lb />
3 loss in Edmonton to win Game 4<lb />
Monday night despite being out-hit<lb />
by the Oilers, 32-19 and hounded<lb />
by the raucous Rexall Place crowd.<lb />
While second-year point<lb />
machine Eric Staal has become a star<lb />
and threaded a perfect pass to Mark<lb />
Recchi for the game-winning goal<lb />
Monday night, the Conn Smythe<lb />
front-runner for Carolina is rookie<lb />
netminder Cam Ward. Ward has<lb />
made brilliant save after brilliant<lb />
save while posting three shutouts<lb />
in his first Stanley Cup playoffs.<lb />
My NHL passion grew from<lb />
watching a Wayne Gretzky-led<lb />
team lose in the Stanley Cup Finals.<lb />
Tonight that passion will grow<lb />
stronger as I watch the team that<lb />
Gretzky built lose in the Stanley Cup<lb />
Finals to my Carolina Hurricanes.<lb />
