CLAYTON BAUMAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Students from the ECU School<lb />
of Business were awarded first place<lb />
in a national competition recently.<lb />
The competition itself is based off<lb />
investigative work done with local<lb />
businesses where students identify<lb />
possible problems and seek ways to<lb />
eliminate those problems.<lb />
Racheal Baxter, Bryant Beddard,<lb />
Chris Long, Brian Ozment, and<lb />
Tauris Speight were selected for first<lb />
place regarding their work with Ben-<lb />
nett Vineyards, which is located in<lb />
Edward, N.C.<lb />
The students, who were mem-<lb />
bers of a 'seniors only' class taught<lb />
by Professor Michael Harris, Direc-<lb />
tor of the Small Business Institute,<lb />
were assigned the vineyard as their<lb />
project. Students worked closely with<lb />
business members, interviewing<lb />
them and researching the industry of<lb />
the business itself. Additionally, the<lb />
team researched and monitored cur-<lb />
rent industry trends. The informa-<lb />
tion will help discover any issues that<lb />
the students might be able to give<lb />

SGA legislature holds first summer meeting<lb />
First goal already<lb />
accomplished<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The legislative branch of SGA<lb />
held their first meeting of this<lb />
semester on Monday to review the<lb />
goals set for the summer.<lb />
The three goals for the summer<lb />
include approving funding recom-<lb />
mended during the spring, defin-<lb />
ing funding board and modifying<lb />
the funding manual.<lb />
SGA has already accomplished<lb />
the goal of getting funding to the<lb />
student organizations that needed<lb />
financial assistance in the spring.<lb />
The congressmen that were in<lb />
attendance on Monday seemed eager<lb />
to get to work on these goals and addi-<lb />
tional issues that need to be addressed.<lb />
Brianne Meagner, the new<lb />
associate director for campus<lb />
involvement and leadership, was<lb />
introduced at the meeting. Stu-<lb />
dents who need to contact her can<lb />
find her on the second floor of<lb />
Mendenhall Student Center.<lb />
Jon Massachi, congressman,<lb />
brought up the issue of expanding<lb />
the parking lot behind the Baptist<lb />
Student Union. A resolution was<lb />
created in the spring to extend the<lb />
parking lot but no approval to do<lb />
so has been made. The resolution<lb />
is under review by the Green Space<lb />
committee.<lb />
As of right now, the committee<lb />
doesn't agree with the resolution<lb />
for three reasons.<lb />

The E10 mixture promises<lb />
significant decrease of<lb />
8 petroleum use<lb />
CHRISTOPHER STEVENSON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
What if the whole world ran out<lb />
of gasoline? Many experts ponder<lb />
the possibility, especially as the<lb />
world's petroleum use continues to<lb />
grow. This summer ECU will begin<lb />
to use "gasohol" as an alternative<lb />
fuel source to power some of the<lb />
vehicles and equipment on campus.<lb />
Gasohol is an ElO mixture that<lb />
contains 90 percent gasoline and<lb />
10 percent ethanol. The 10 percent<lb />
replacement of ethanol in each<lb />
gallon will result in a 10 percent<lb />
reduction in petroleum used in<lb />
many universities' vehicles and<lb />
equipment.<lb />
George Harrell, senior associate<lb />
vice chancellor for campus opera-<lb />
tions, said that ECU uses about<lb />
107,000 gallons of the standard<lb />
gasoline yearly, and the change<lb />
to the ElO mixture will result in a<lb />
decrease of around 11,000 gallons<lb />
of petroleum per year. Harrell<lb />
said that crops grown in eastern<lb />
North Carolina can be converted<lb />
to produce the ethanol percentage<lb />
of the ElO mixture.<lb />
Ethanol is an alcohol-based<lb />
alternative fuel source that is pro-<lb />
duced by fermenting and distill-<lb />
ing starch crops that have been<lb />
converted into simple sugars.<lb />
Feedstock for this fuel source<lb />
includes corn, barley and wheat.<lb />
Ethanol can also be produced<lb />
from cellulosic biomass, such as<lb />
trees and grasses, which is called<lb />
bioethanol.<lb />
Most of the 4 billion gallons<lb />
of ethanol used every year in the<lb />
United States is used in the form of<lb />
the ElO mixture, and this 10 per-<lb />
cent blend is approved for all makes<lb />
and models of vehicles. Even some<lb />
automobile manufactures recom-<lb />
mend the use of the ElO mixture<lb />
over standard gasoline because of<lb />
its high octane level and enhanced<lb />
performance characteristics.<lb />
Ethanol is not a new concept.<lb />
At its most simple state, Ethanol<lb />
is grain alcohol, which has been<lb />
around for centuries. Henry Ford<lb />
even visualized his automobiles<lb />
running on this type of alcohol<lb />
rather than on regular gasoline.<lb />
The ElO mixture is completely<lb />
safe to use in smaller engines like<lb />
motorcycles, lawn mowers, trim-<lb />
mers, boats, snowmobiles and many<lb />
other engines, which is an added<lb />
benefit because it can fuel all the<lb />
different kinds of machines that<lb />

The United States has gained<lb />

Families of car crash victims stunned by mix-up<lb />
(KRT) In a tragic case of<lb />
mistaken identity, the family of an<lb />
Indiana college student believed to<lb />
have survived a multiple-fatality<lb />
crash in late April said Wednesday<lb />
their daughter was dead, while the<lb />
parents of a student thought to<lb />
have died in that collision learned<lb />
their daughter was alive in a Michi-<lb />
gan hospital.<lb />
The sad and extraordinary<lb />
story came to light on a Web log set<lb />
up by the family of Laura VanRyn,<lb />
a 22-year-old student from Caledo-<lb />
nia, Mich. Her relatives had kept a<lb />
five-week vigil at the Grand Rapids<lb />
hospital bed of a young woman<lb />
they thought was their daughter.<lb />
Uncertainty about the woman's<lb />
identity grew this week as she<lb />
regained consciousness, and dental<lb />
records confirmed the student the<lb />
VanRyn family had been watching<lb />
over was actually 18-year-old Whit-<lb />
ney Cerak of Gaylord, Mich.<lb />
The Cerak family had unknow-<lb />
ingly buried VanRyn on April 30, in<lb />
the northern Michigan woods about<lb />
180 miles north of Grand Rapids.<lb />
"Our hearts are aching as<lb />
we have learned that the young<lb />
woman we have been taking care<lb />
of over the past five weeks has not<lb />
been our dear Laura, but instead a<lb />
fellow Taylor student of hers the<lb />
VanRyns said on their blog.<lb />
Authorities in Indiana were<lb />
trying to unravel the heartbreaking<lb />
mix-up on Wednesday, five weeks<lb />
after five people-including four<lb />
students from Taylor University, a<lb />
small evangelical Christian college<lb />
in Upland, Indwere killed in a<lb />
crash on Interstate Highway 69.<lb />
Confusion apparently began<lb />
in the hectic moments after the<lb />
deadly April 26 crash involving<lb />
a semi-tractor trailer loaded with<lb />
baking flour and the Taylor Uni-<lb />
versity van, returning from nearby<lb />
Ft. Wayne. Grant County (Ind.)<lb />
Coroner Ron Mowery, whose office<lb />
handled the death investigations,<lb />
apologized during a news confer-<lb />
ence Wednesday for the mix-up.<lb />
He described an accident scene<lb />
where purses and wallets were<lb />
strewn about and that acquain-<lb />
tances of the students had iden-<lb />
tified the survivor taken to a Ft.<lb />
Wayne hospital as VanRyn. He said<lb />
no scientific testing was conducted<lb />
to verify the identifications.<lb />
"I can't stress enough that we<lb />
did everything we knew to do<lb />
under those circumstances, and<lb />
trusted the same processes and the<lb />
same policies that we always do<lb />
Mowery told reporters in Marion,<lb />
Ind. "And this tragedy unfolded<lb />
like we could never have imagined<lb />
The truth about the identities<lb />
of the two young women began to<lb />
take shape in recent days, as the<lb />
VanRyns watched Cerak slowly<lb />
recover from serious head and<lb />
neck wounds at a Grand Rapids<lb />
rehabilitation center for victims<lb />
of brain damage. Bruce Rossman,<lb />
a spokesman for Spectrum Health<lb />
System in Grand Rapids, said the<lb />
VanRyn family's doubts mounted<lb />
as Cerak gained more awareness of<lb />
her surroundings.<lb />
"They said a couple of times<lb />
they called her Laura and she said,<lb />
No, Whitney Rossman said.<lb />
Acting on suspicions, the two<lb />
families conferred on Tuesday,<lb />
Rossman said, and requested dental<lb />
records be checked. By Tuesday night<lb />
the families knew the young woman<lb />
was not Laura VanRyn. Twelve<lb />
hours later, at mid-morning on<lb />
Wednesday, dental records proved<lb />
the recovering woman was Cerak.<lb />
Rossman said he did not know<lb />
the specific nature of Cerak's<lb />
injuries or the extent to which<lb />
her identity would have been<lb />
obscured by wounds, bandages or<lb />
other markings. "There was some<lb />
general trauma associated with<lb />
the accident, including bruising<lb />
and swelling he said. The families<lb />
issued a joint statement Wednes-<lb />
day, saying these "two wonderful<lb />
young women shared a striking<lb />
similarity in size, hair, facial fea-<lb />
tures and body type<lb />
"Our families are supporting<lb />
each other in prayer, and we thank<lb />
our families, friends and communi-<lb />
ties for their prayers the families<lb />
said in a prepared statement.<lb />
Five weeks ago the local news-<lb />
paper in Gaylord, the Herald Times,<lb />
published an obituary for Whitney<lb />
Cerak. It read, "She lived a wonder-<lb />
ful, full, but short life<lb /><lb /><pb facs="00059425_tn_0004" /><lb />

that all areas west and east of the<lb />
Dr. van der Steen spoke about the complexity of the Palestinian conflict.<lb />
Jordan River belong to one party<lb />
and hot the other.<lb />
. While we see much of the<lb />
extreme examples of the Israeli-Pal-<lb />
estinian conflict on the news, Dr.<lb />
van der Steen says that the majority<lb />
of the people are in favor of peace.<lb />
"Most Israelis and Palestin-<lb />
ians are willing to give up part of<lb />
their original claims of land in<lb />
exchange for peace and are willing<lb />
to consider the other party's claims.<lb />
It's more than just a land dispute.<lb />
It's an ideological dispute, and<lb />
religion comes into it, and religion<lb />
is always a very dangerous thing to<lb />
mix into politics she said.<lb />
While unsure of her overall<lb />
message, Dr. van der Steen wanted<lb />
people to understand that the Israeli-<lb />
Palestinian conflict is not a simple<lb />
problem and lacks a simple solution.<lb />
This program was sponsored by<lb />
the World Affairs Council (WAC),<lb />
a non-profit organization relatively<lb />
new to Greenville and ECU, and<lb />
was also made possible by the<lb />
Rivers Chair program, which brings<lb />
in international faculty to ECU.<lb />
Dr. Richard J. Kilroy, Jr<lb />
visiting assistant professor and<lb />
assistant director of military pro-<lb />
grams, is the president of the<lb />
board of directors of the WAC in<lb />
Greenville. While WAC has existed<lb />
in Greenville since Spring2006,<lb />
Dr. van der Steen's program was<lb />
the first event WAC has sponsored.<lb />
WAC also hosts the Great Deci-<lb />
sions Program, in which they<lb />
discuss issues such as U.S. policy<lb />
with Iran, United Nations reform,<lb />
human rights in terrorism, and the<lb />
global energy crises.<lb />
Greenville's WAC chapter is just<lb />
one of five in the state of N.C with<lb />
the others located in Charlotte,<lb />
Gfeensboto, TriangleRaleigh area<lb />
and Asheville. There are a total of<lb />
85 chapters and various organiza-<lb />
tions of the WAC that stem from<lb />
the main organization located in<lb />
Washington, D.C.<lb />
While many programs from ECU<lb />
are involved in WAC and the board of<lb />
directors, such as the international<lb />
programs and the study abroad<lb />
programs, it is not limited to them.<lb />

Baxter described the experience<lb />
as pretty intense considering that<lb />
it was the first time that any of the<lb />
students had received any hands<lb />

company.<lb />
She stressed that students who<lb />
are considering opening a business<lb />
in the future that knowing one<lb />
individual skill of the business, such<lb />
as marketing or accounting, simply<lb />
won't cut it. A person needs to know<lb />

their livelihood is at stake. In this<lb />
semester, you can actually give them<lb />

that they make more money. If the<lb />
stakes are critical, students rise to the<lb />
challenge said Harris.<lb />

In My Opinion<lb />
Ethanol is a start, not the solution<lb />
Driving under the<lb />
influence of ethanol<lb />
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
OPINION COLUMNIST<lb />
There has been a lot of talk<lb />
lately that some of you may have<lb />
heard about the use of a substance<lb />
called ethanol tc replace gasoline.<lb />
With gas prices still ranging near<lb />
$3 a gallon, many probably think<lb />
this is the answer to our skyrocket-<lb />
ing gas-prices dilemma. But do you<lb />
really know what ethanol is?<lb />
Ethanol is basically alcohol, spe-<lb />
cifically ethyl or grain alcohol. It's<lb />
flammable, colorless and commonly<lb />
used to make alcoholic beverages.<lb />
Essentially, it is alcohol. For you chem-<lb />
istry majors, it can be represented as:<lb />
EtOH, C2HSOH andor C2H60.<lb />
The truth of the matter is that<lb />
ethanol can be found in most gaso-<lb />
line, just in a very small amount.<lb />
Most of America's gasoline is about<lb />
10 percent ethanol, and is derived<lb />
from corn. Brazil is the largest<lb />
national fuel ethanol industry, and<lb />
produces ethanol from sugarcane.<lb />
They produce 14 billion liters of<lb />
ethanol annually, covering about<lb />
40 percent of Brazil's gasoline<lb />
demand. All of Brazil's fuel con-<lb />
tains at least 25 percent alcohol.<lb />
Ethanol, while widely mixed<lb />
with gasoline, could be used by itself<lb />
as a fuel source. In fact, back in 2005,<lb />
the Indy Racing League announced<lb />
its cars would run on a 10 percent<lb />
ethanol - 90 percent methanol (gas-<lb />
oline) blend fuel. In 2007, the cars<lb />
will race on 100 percent ethanol.<lb />
The theoretical benefits to<lb />
ethanol are that it's renewable, it<lb />
can be domestically produced and<lb />
it burns cleaner than gas. The prob-<lb />
lem with the latter is that using<lb />
ethanol as a fuel produces nitrogen<lb />
monoxide and nitrogen dioxide.<lb />
Both are harmful air pollutants, but<lb />
"I<lb />
both are still produced by normal<lb />
gasoline. The theory though is<lb />
that ethanol would produce less<lb />
of them than normal gasoline.<lb />
While some of you may think<lb />
Republicans and oil tycoons are<lb />
putting down ethanol, it should be<lb />
known that President George W.<lb />
Bush and members of Congress have<lb />
expressed support for ethanol use.<lb />
This spring, refiners in parts of the<lb />
president's home state of Texas and<lb />
in the Northeast have been replac-<lb />
ing a gasoline additive called MTBE<lb />
(methyl tertiary-butyl ether) with<lb />
ethanol. MTBE, a chemical used to<lb />
oxygenate fuel, can contaminate<lb />
drinking water. Ethanol, which<lb />
does not present the same danger,<lb />
can serve the same purpose in fuel.<lb />
In 2005, an energy bill was<lb />
passed that requires the U.S. to<lb />
boost its ethanol production to<lb />
7.5 billion gallons by 2012, up<lb />
from about 4 billion in 2005. This<lb />
is a significant increase when you<lb />
consider the fact that the U.S. used<lb />
up almost 140 billion gallons of gas<lb />
last year. However, ethanol contains<lb />
less energy than gas and that would<lb />
mean drivers would have to make<lb />
more frequent trips to the pump.<lb />
You may have also heard that<lb />
ethanol is cheaper than gasoline,<lb />
but that is not true. The move this<lb />
spring by more regions to use etha-<lb />
nol means that demand for ethanol<lb />
has spiked and driven prices up.<lb />
Recently, the New York harbor<lb />
price for ethanol was around $3 per<lb />
gallon compared with about $2.28<lb />
for gasoline. That gas price is before<lb />
it is mixed with ethanol. In other<lb />
words, for now ethanol is helping<lb />
to increase prices at the pump.<lb />
Another factor that could be<lb />
increasing gas prices is the fact that<lb />
ethanol can't travel in pipelines<lb />
along with gasoline, because it<lb />
picks up excess water and impuri-<lb />
ties. As a result, ethanol needs to<lb />
be transported by trucks, trains<lb />
or boats, which is more expensive<lb />
and complicated than sending it<lb />
down a pipeline. Because refiners<lb />
switched to ethanol this spring,<lb />
the rise in gas prices could be due<lb />
to their change in transportation<lb />
needs to move ethanol.<lb />
So based on all these facts,<lb />
maybe things aren't as they appear.<lb />
Maybe the reason we have to spend<lb />
more on gas is because the reality<lb />
is that we're spending more on<lb />
ethanol. Perhaps instead of greedy<lb />
politicians and rich fats cats being<lb />
the enemy to your gas expenses,<lb />
you should look at the environ-<lb />
mentalists and the alternative fuel<lb />
activists with a little more anger.<lb />
Maybe President Bush isn't an oil-<lb />
hungry business tycoon who doesn't<lb />
care about the environment, since<lb />
he would have had some approval<lb />
of the energy bill that has required<lb />
more ethanol to be produced in this<lb />
country. Maybe the need for oil in<lb />
this country is based on a need to<lb />
make gasoline cheaper for people<lb />
to buy and have so they can drive<lb />
happily around in their SUVs rather<lb />
than having to pay more for it as<lb />
ethanol becomes needed more and<lb />
more or as ethanol becomes used<lb />
in our gasoline more and more.<lb />
Maybe gas prices aren't being<lb />
dictated by greedy corporate fat<lb />
cats of the oil industry. Maybe the<lb />
ethanol industry is to blame, or<lb />
even those that push the use of<lb />
ethanol. Perhaps there could even<lb />
be a connection between the two.<lb />
I'm all for saving the environ-<lb />
ment, in fact I've made the effort to<lb />
recycle beyond what my apartment<lb />
complex and the school has given<lb />
me the option for. However, people<lb />
will not always make the effort to<lb />
do what's right or good for them or<lb />
the Earth, especially if has to come<lb />
from their wallet. Alternative fuels<lb />
are a great idea, but don't be fooled<lb />
into thinking that just because you<lb />
pay more you actually gain more.<lb />
Pirate Rants<lb />
. You may not have the need to swear,<lb />
but sometimes &$ or(insert<lb />
your own curse word here) gets<lb />
the message across so much better.<lb />
Is smoking a requirement for<lb />
admission to ECU? Every time<lb />
I see a hot girl, she pulls out a<lb />
cancer stick, lights up, and inhales<lb />
the putrid smoke. Ladies, smok-<lb />
ing doesn't do anything for your<lb />
"super model" look. 10 years down<lb />
the road you're going to look like<lb />
Anna Nicole Smith and I'm going<lb />
to laugh.<lb />
People, let's try thinking before<lb />
we speak.<lb />
After I saw the Spin Doctors, I<lb />
heard them on the radio. WZMB<lb />
is on top of their stuff.<lb />
Is it just me or does the construc-<lb />
tion going on to renovate the Old<lb />
Cafeteria look the exact same today<lb />
as it did the first day of classes?<lb />
Wow, what a great work effort!<lb />
Why are there lights coming out of<lb />
the manholes on campus? I think<lb />
they are building something down<lb />
there!<lb />
It's not too late to tell me how you<lb />
feel. Really. If you've loved me for<lb />
so long or even come to love me<lb />
because we known each other for so<lb />
long, then graduation is no excuse<lb />
for you to just give up. Fight for me<lb />
with every fiber of your being! Be<lb />
confident and don't hold back now.<lb />
Don't let self-doubt keep you from<lb />

we could have. The potential hap-<lb />

Hurricane season in North Carolina<lb />
What you need to know<lb />
SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
can do to prepare for hurricane<lb />
season is build a hurricane survival<lb />
kit.<lb />
The arrival of summer<lb />
marks the beginning<lb />
of another hurricane<lb />
season. Last year the<lb />
intense amounts of ,<lb />
wind and rain cre-<lb />
ated by Hurricane<lb />
Katrina shattered<lb />
the lives of count-<lb />
less Americans. In<lb />
the wake of this<lb />
tragedy many of us<lb />
were left wondering<lb />
what we would do if<lb />
we ever found ourselves<lb />
in a similar situation.<lb />
Preparation is the key<lb />
to escaping a hurricane with<lb />
minimal damage. Since we live<lb />
in eastern North Carolina the<lb />
probability of a hurricane striking<lb />
is extremely high, therefore precau-<lb />
tions should be taken to reduce the<lb />
effects of a disaster.<lb />
One of the first things that you<lb />
HURRICANE<lb />
EVACUATION<lb />
. ROUTE<lb />
The kit should include blankets,<lb />
a battery-powered radio, non-per-<lb />
ishable food (enough for three to<lb />
seven days), water (one gallon per<lb />
person for three to seven days), a<lb />
first aid kit, flashlights and bat-<lb />
teries.<lb />
By keeping this kit on hand you<lb />
will take the burden of scrambling<lb />
to find things off of your shoul-<lb />
ders so that you can shift<lb />
your focus to the safety of<lb />
yourself as well as your<lb />
family.<lb />
Next, if an evacua-<lb />
tion is issued for your<lb />
area be sure to leave<lb />
as soon as possible.<lb />
Staying in your home<lb />
will only put your<lb />
in danger. You can<lb />
rebuild and restore<lb />
damage to your home,<lb />
but your life is irreplace-<lb />
able, so don't take any<lb />
unnecessary risks.<lb />
Have an evacuation plan<lb />
ready so that when it's time to<lb />
leave you aren't left wondering<lb />
where to go. Keep important contact<lb />
information for family and friends<lb />
with you at all times so that you can<lb />
easily find a place to stay until the<lb />
storm passes.<lb />
Atlantic hurricanes<lb />
Forecasters expect another very active<lb />
Also, keep the number of hotels<lb />
in other towns on hand so that if<lb />
your family and friends have to<lb />
evacuate as well you won't be left<lb />
stranded. If none of these options<lb />
work for you, shelters are another<lb />
option. Shelters usually open in<lb />
the event of an emergency, and<lb />
while they may not be the most<lb />
comfortable place to stay, they-are<lb />
generally safe.<lb />
Hurricane preparation should<lb />
also include learning about poten-<lb />

Rocking country weekend in Roanoke Rapids<lb />
Big & Rich concert review<lb />
AARON BORREGO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Big & Rich entertained a large crowd at the new Carolina Crossroads<lb />
Last week's preview of the<lb />
Big and Rich concert hardly<lb />
described the environment which<lb />
the performers created with their<lb />
performances on Saturday, June 3.<lb />
Not even the rain showers could<lb />
put a damper on the festivities<lb />
held this past weekend for about<lb />
20,000 fans.<lb />
Being that I arrived a bit late,<lb />
I only saw a bit of the local band<lb />
Southern Draw. Even they were<lb />
primed and ready to play that<lb />
day in the rain and didn't disap-<lb />
point by giving spectators a good<lb />
bit of Carolina country to shake<lb />
the buns to.<lb />
Next was Danielle Peck, a new<lb />
and upcoming female country<lb />
artist. Her music had great catch to<lb />
the words and was easy to listen.<lb />
Besides, she is a native of North<lb />
Carolina, as she stated during her<lb />
set, and we all know how beautiful<lb />
Carolina girls are.<lb />
a Jason Aldean followed up to an<lb />
2 enormous reception upon starting<lb />
his set. His music was extremely<lb />
entertaining with a performance<lb />
which matched his passion he has<lb />
put into writing his songs. There<lb />
was something for everyone when<lb />
he covered some Guns and Roses<lb />
during his stint. "Paradise City"<lb />
and "Sweet Child O' Mine" received<lb />
huge attention and singing along<lb />
from the crowd.<lb />
Now before the main act was<lb />
to appear, you must imagine there<lb />
would be some bumps in the road,<lb />
especially for a newly established<lb />
venue such as the Carolina Cross-<lb />
roads. Big & Rich was to give a<lb />
press conference for the media to<lb />
which the record label bluntly said<lb />
no deal. This would have been nice<lb />
to know before Carolina Cross-<lb />
roads tried to get them to give the<lb />
press conference for about an hour<lb />
and a half.<lb />
Either Big & Rich is too pansy<lb />
for a simple press conference or<lb />
their label doesn't have the eggs<lb />
to let these boys speak, either way<lb />
they came out looking like nancy<lb />
boy sellouts to the media. Being a<lb />
national act, you have some respon-<lb />
sibility to the people who buy your<lb />
records and see your shows to at<lb />
least be kind enough to take time<lb />
out of your busy day of sleeping<lb />
to speak to them through media<lb />
outlets.<lb />
Also, to the two women who I<lb />
gave my seat up to, trying to be a<lb />
chivalrous Southern gentleman:<lb />
Have some common decency and<lb />
say thank you. I noticed these old<lb />
bags were wearing "Corporate"<lb />
access tags around they- necks and I<lb />
imagine couldn't be bothered with<lb />
common human decency.<lb />
Big & Rich eventually took the<lb />
stage and I realized something- the<lb />
wait and anticipation was all worth<lb />
it. These guys rocked a field of<lb />
totally engulfed and entranced<lb />
people. Opening with "Coming to<lb />
your City they never let go of the<lb />
fans during the show.<lb />
Another first for me was this;<lb />
during the show Big & Rich brought<lb />
an American flag out there and took<lb />
the led into an impromptu "Pledge<lb />
of Allegiance" with the crowd, to<lb />
which they gave thanks to this<lb />
great nation for allowing them to<lb />
play their music.<lb />
Carolina Crossroads did a great<lb />
job organizing this event, which<lb />
actually ran quite smoothly. I hope<lb />
some of you made the trip to see<lb />
this grade "A" show. If not, you<lb />
missed a great concert and time.<lb />

Tokyo To Go! becomes new spin on an old favorite<lb />
New Japanese hibachi<lb />

MEREDITH STEWART<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Greenville has many options<lb />
when it comes to restaurants, casual<lb />
dining, fast food and take-out. On<lb />
April 26 another place opened that<lb />
people can't stop talking about,<lb />
Tokyo To Go! It's located at 310-F<lb />
E. Arlington Boulevard, in the Big<lb />
Lots stopping center.<lb />
"The reason for opening a<lb />
Japanese place was because I was<lb />
unhappy with the other ones. I<lb />
thought they were too crowded,<lb />
the wait was too long and through<lb />
different experiences I just<lb />
decided to open up one of my<lb />
own said George Swarts, owner of<lb />
Tokyo To Go!<lb />
You can call ahead for pick<lb />
up at 321 - 8300 and even view<lb />
their menu on their Web site,<lb />
TOKY02GO.com or by requesting<lb />
the menu via fax. If you chose to eat<lb />
in their large dining area you will<lb />
also be pleased with their service,<lb />
cleanliness and family friendly<lb />
atmosphere.<lb />
"The reason I decided to work<lb />
at Tokyo To Go! is because they are<lb />
Walking into Tokyo to Go! you may notice a different atmosphere. Customers enjoy the unique flavors that are offered at Tokyo to Go!<lb />
providing a great product that will<lb />
hopefully lead to expanding stores<lb />
in the near future said manager<lb />
Dennis Duffy.<lb />
Tokyo To Go! offers a variety of<lb />
food selections such as shrimp, filet,<lb />
scallops and all white meat hibachi<lb />
or teriyaki chicken. Each entree<lb />
(sumo size) or bowl (lunch portion)<lb />
comes with vegetables and your<lb />
choice of rice or their soba noodles.<lb />
I found that the noodles were best<lb />
with shrimp or scallops and their<lb />
fried rice was great with the chicken<lb />
or beef. Their Japanese mushroom<lb />
soup and spring rolls are perfect<lb />
for appetizers or just a quick snack.<lb />
They also have Samurai Wraps<lb />
which are made of steamed or fried<lb />
rice, zucchini, onions and your<lb />
choice of a sauce and meat (or just<lb />
all vegetables) all rolled in a tortilla.<lb />
The steak wrap with white sauce<lb />
is a personal favorite. Their salads<lb />
are great for light lunches and even<lb />
better with hibachi chicken or<lb />
steak on top.<lb />
Tokyo To Go! seems to have<lb />
mastered the sauces. They offer<lb />
ginger dressing which is great on<lb />
salads, homemade white sauce<lb />
that is great on everything, ginger<lb />
sauce which adds a little sweet-<lb />
ness to your meal, mustard which<lb />
is good for those who like things<lb />
a little spicy and hot sauce for<lb />
those who like it really spicy. All of<lb />
these sauces are homemade with<lb />

ZACH STEPHENSON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
On entrance, the club seemed<lb />
sparse for a show embracing such<lb />
North Carolina essentials as Supas-<lb />
tition and Cesar Comanche. A<lb />
lone dancer flagrantly bounced<lb />
across the floor, oblivious to the<lb />
stares of his sober onlookers.<lb />
The robotic, b-boy concoctions<lb />
were an amusing spectacle, but<lb />
became an archaic anecdote<lb />
once the talent seized the stage.<lb />
An unbilled appearance from<lb />
Wilmington-based emcee Fuzz<lb />
Jax graced the night's infancy.<lb />
His show opener "How Many<lb />
Times laced soulful production<lb />
with lingual expressions like "I<lb />
can't take it no more It's Hol-<lb />

what they really rappin' for<lb />
Pretty bold statements coming<lb />
from a relatively unknown<lb />
rapper, but his style proved a<lb />
worthy asset to the night's aura of<lb />
roots revival.<lb />
Following suit, the Artistic<lb />
Anarchists set was perfectly timed,<lb />
right when the crowd finished<lb />
swilling Jager bombs and was ready<lb />
to get loose.<lb />
The group's gritty sound<lb />
and jaded lyrics complemented<lb />
their persona, topped off with<lb />
a T-shirt stating 'They Hate Me'<lb />
in bold print. The Anarchists'<lb />

Comanche snatched the mic<lb />
like a well-seasoned vet. He's the<lb />

'nuff said. "Jacob's Ladder" cli-<lb />
maxed the night. The first verse,<lb />
"We love all of ya'll We love all<lb />
of ya'll, man Knoxville, Charlotte,<lb />
Greenville, DC put the crowd in<lb />
complete hysteria.<lb />
When asked how he felt about<lb />
the success of the League, and com-<lb />
parisons to the rest of the industry,<lb />
he replied modestly. "Music needs<lb />
to ground itself in real life. If it<lb />
sounds dope, I'm with it The con-<lb />

Supastition previously con-<lb />

track "Hate My Face I'm asking,<lb />

backwash of Stones Throw Records<lb />

by Adult Swim than the hip-hop<lb />
community, Supa has messiah-<lb />
like potential.<lb />
His lyrics were clear and concise,<lb />
an amazing feat for a rapper at a live<lb />
show. After using call-and-response<lb />
tactics to involve the crowd, he<lb />
jumped off stage, leaving the audi-<lb />

Aundrae Allison- Football<lb />
Allison somersaulted into the end<lb />
zone when scoring his first touchdown<lb />
during 2005's spring practice. Back then,<lb />
fans didn't know what to expect from<lb />
the Georgia Military transfer. Allison<lb />
was a highly touted recruit when he<lb />
originally signed with UNC, but few<lb />
anticipated the type of breakout season<lb />
that included an assault on the pres-<lb />
tigious ECU record book. Instead of<lb />
flaming out, Allison arrived on the<lb />
scene to deliver one of the most magical individual football seasons ever.<lb />
The junior receiver tallied an ECU single-season<lb />
record in receiving yards with 1,024. He was the first Pirate receiver<lb />
to break the century mark in a single-season while shattering<lb />
the previous record by 127 yards. His 93.1 receiving yards-per-game<lb />
ranked 19,h nationally while his catches-per-game (7.55) led Confer-<lb />
ence USA and were fourth nationally.<lb />
Had Allison not suffered a knee injury in the season finale, he<lb />
may have broke Terrance Copper's single-season reception mark,<lb />
which he narrowly missed by four receptions. The junior also tallied<lb />
five games with receiving yards in excess of 100 yards, the most ever<lb />
for an ECU receiver.<lb />
Allison was named to the All-C-USA team and started all 11 contests<lb />
while scoring seven touchdowns despite facing multiple double teams.<lb />

Pirate since 2004 to earn All-America accolades.<lb />
Smith finished his collegiate career with 29<lb />
home runs and 135 RBIs, which ranks in the<lb />
top 12 on ECU'S all-time charts. During 2006,<lb />
he topped all Pirate hitters in seven categories<lb />
including average, hits, doubles, RBI, total<lb />

The Greensboro, N.C. native was selected to the first-team All C-USA<lb />

Hector Cotto- Track fir Field<lb />
Cotto will compete in the NCAA national<lb />
championship outdoor track meet on June<lb />
7-10. The lid meter hurdler recently finished<lb />
third at the East Regional in Greensboro to<lb />
qualify for the national meet. It was Cotto's<lb />
second consecutive trip to the regional meet.<lb />
The senior hurdler broke his own per-<lb />

13.66 during the East Regional, breaking<lb />
his previous mark of 13.78, which he set<lb />
as a junior. The Cary, N.C. native finished<lb />
second in the C-USA Championships after<lb />
posting a 14.00 mark. Cotto turned in a<lb />
strong outing at the Penn Relays, when he finished eighth (14.08)<lb />
in the college division and ninth in the championship heat (14.55).<lb />
Bryan Yaslnsac- Swimming fir Diving<lb />
Yasinsac made an immediate impact on<lb />
Rick Kobe's swimming squad, which finished<lb />
second in C-USA, after transferring from the<lb />
University of Florida. Yasinsac earned all-con-<lb />
ference honors in four relay events and set an<lb />
ECU record in the 50-free (20.61).<lb />
The 6-foot, 5-inch swimmer anchored<lb />
the 200-medley relay (1:30.73), 400-medley<lb />
relay (3:22.48), 200-freestyle relay (1:22.49)<lb />
and the 400-freestyle relay (3:02.10), all<lb />
of which topped C-USA. The 200-medley<lb />
relay also established an ECU record time.<lb />
In addition to the 50-free, the Taylorsville, N.C. native led the<lb />
team with top times in the 100-free (45.61) and 200-free (1:41.65).<lb />
Chris Moore- Football<lb />
Despite getting released from the New<lb />
Orleans Saints, Moore had a memorable col-<lb />
lege campaign. The hard nosed and undersized<lb />
middle linebacker etched his mark on the ECU<lb />
record book while also serving as the senior<lb />
emotional leader for the Pirates' 5-6 resurgence.<lb />
Moore tallied 415 career tackles, which<lb />
stands fourth all-time behind former ECU greats<lb />
Harold Randolph, Robert Jones and Pernell<lb />
Griffin. The 6-foot, 235-pound linebacker led<lb />
the conference in tackles in 2004 and finished<lb />
third in 2005. The first-team C-USA selection led C-USA in tackles for a loss.<lb />
He started all 11 games in 2005 and gritted out 38 games total for his career.<lb />

Ward saves the day for Hurricanes in Game 1<lb />
(AP) His teammates were<lb />
still grumbling Tuesday about how<lb />
poorly they played. Yet some of the<lb />
Carolina Hurricanes say that without<lb />
rookie goaltender Cam Ward, they<lb />
might be grousing instead about a<lb />
loss to Edmonton in the opening<lb />
game of the Stanley Cup finals.<lb />
"We got outshot, outchanced,<lb />
we got outplayed, plain and simple.<lb />
If it wasn't for Cam Ward, we would<lb />
have lost that game left wing Cory<lb />
Stillman said after Tuesday's off-<lb />
day skate at the RBC Center, site of<lb />
Game 2 in the best-of-seven series.<lb />
"If you're looking at the stats,<lb />
we won the game Stillman said of<lb />
the 5-4 victory. "It was great, but I<lb />
think the only guy who showed up<lb />
on our team was our goaltender<lb />
Ward made 34 saves against the<lb />
Oilers, but none was more impres-<lb />
sive than a stop on center Shawn<lb />
Horcoff with 3.8 seconds left when<lb />
Ward flailed at the puck with his<lb />
glove hand and batted it away.<lb />
"It was one of those instances<lb />
that Ryan Smyth made a great pass<lb />
where I kind of anticipated the shot<lb />
and bit down and just out of pure<lb />
desperation threw my glove out and<lb />
just so happened to hit it Ward said.<lb />
"It's just a good example of not giving<lb />
up on the puck, I guess, and getting<lb />
a little bit lucky at the same time<lb />
Carolina coach Peter Laviolette<lb />
said it was an impressive perfor-<lb />
mance given that Ward surrendered<lb />
three goals in two periods and<lb />
allowed another that tied the score<lb />
at 4 late in the third period.<lb />
"Usually, if you get one high-<lb />
light-reel save in a game, it's a<lb />
good one to get Laviolette said.<lb />
"But he probably had four of them.<lb />
Empty-net, backdoor goal where,<lb />
somehow, he got across and got a<lb />
piece of it. He was very focused. He<lb />
played great, he really did<lb />
Ward, whose beard barely hids<lb />
the fact that he's just 22, didn't<lb />
make his NHL playoff debut until<lb />
it looked like the Hurricanes were<lb />
about to be run out of the postsea-<lb />
son in the first round. But he gave<lb />
the team hope after replacing regu-<lb />
lar-season starter Martin Gerber in<lb />
a Game 2 loss to Montreal.<lb />
In Game 3 against the Cana-<lb />
diens, Ward stopped 27 of 28 shots<lb />
to earn his first playoff victory, and<lb />
followed that by making 23 saves<lb />
in a Game 4 win. Stellar efforts in<lb />
Games 5 and 6 helped Carolina rally<lb />
from an 0-2 deficit in the series and<lb />
propel them toward their second run<lb />
at the Stanley Cup in four seasons.<lb />

of his four semifinal victories over<lb />
New Jersey, Ward came through<lb />
in the Eastern Conference finals<lb />
against Buffalo, ending with a 22-<lb />
save performance against the Sabres<lb />
in Game 7 that gave Carolina a<lb />
chance to rally for a 4-2 victory.<lb />
"His play in the playoffs has<lb />
been consistent Laviolette said.<lb />
"He came in and saved our bacon<lb />
against Montreal, and he played<lb />
extremely well<lb />
Edmonton led 3-0 late in the<lb />
second period Monday before they<lb />
rallied for the win. One goal came<lb />
on a penalty shot and another was<lb />
the result of a deflection off one of<lb />
Ward's teammates.<lb />
"It's how you respond from<lb />
those situations that matter Ward<lb />
said. "We have been in those<lb />
situations all season long, and once<lb />
again, we were able to overcome<lb />
that obstacle without giving up<lb />
One of Ward's teammates says<lb />
now that the has goalie stepped up,<lb />
it's their turn.<lb />
"He is still a young guy. He is<lb />
not a guy that rests on his laurels<lb />
said defenseman Aaron Ward, who<lb />
is not related. "He is just going to<lb />
be out there and give a performance<lb />
for all of us. Now the onus is on us <lb />
to perform for him<lb />
