SGA senate working toward reducing<lb/>
the price of textbooks for students<lb/>
Three scholarships<lb/>
given to students in the<lb/>
process<lb/>
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
The SGA senate is working to<lb/>
make textbooks more affordable<lb/>
for students by coming up with a<lb/>
number of alternatives to buying<lb/>
new textbooks.<lb/>
Matt Wagoner, executive cabi-<lb/>
net member of the campus affairs<lb/>
of the senate, has been very<lb/>
involved in the process and said<lb/>
that working on the book buyback<lb/>
system is a platform goal of theirs.<lb/>
Two of the key factors in text-<lb/>
book cost are faculty textbook<lb/>
adoption forms and student<lb/>
reservation forms.<lb/>
The adoption forms are to<lb/>
be filled out by faculty about<lb/>
mid-way through the semester<lb/>
to let the bookstore know which<lb/>
books are in high demand for the<lb/>
upcoming semester and allows<lb/>
them to buy the books back from<lb/>
the students.<lb/>
The bookstores can also find<lb/>
books at cheaper prices than new<lb/>
books by other alternatives such<lb/>
as wholesale book markets if they 1<lb/>
are given enough time to do so. <lb/>
The deadline for faculty to $<lb/>
turn in adoption textbook forms <lb/>
is Friday, March 24. Three scholar- a<lb/>
ships will be awarded as an incen- <lb/>
tive to the first three departments<lb/>
with the highest percentage of<lb/>
completion of the forms.<lb/>
Who receives the scholarship<lb/>
within each department is solely<lb/>
at the departments' discretion.<lb/>
Nationwide, only about half<lb/>
of the professors submit their text-<lb/>
book adoption forms in on time.<lb/>
Faculty should keep a few<lb/>
things in mind when considering<lb/>
which books to include on the<lb/>
adoption forms.<lb/>
Wagoner said it's a good idea<lb/>
for the professor to consider<lb/>
which items they are most likely<lb/>
Left: Matt Wagoner weighs the pros and cons of buying textbooks. Above: Textbooks and their pricetags. Below: A breakdown of where a student's textbook dollars go.<lb/>
to use if the book comes in a<lb/>
bundle, if a new edition is abso-<lb/>
lutely needed and to compare<lb/>
costs of the books.<lb/>
The second thing the senate is<lb/>
trying to improve is the textbook<lb/>
reservation form for students.<lb/>
The senate is trying to come<lb/>
up with new ways to get these<lb/>
forms distributed to students<lb/>
besides just going to the book<lb/>
store to pick a copy and they<lb/>
are also trying to find ways to<lb/>
encourage use of the forms to<lb/>
more upperclassmen.<lb/>
According to Wagoner, the<lb/>
bookstore reported that about 1,600<lb/>
freshmen use the forms as opposed<lb/>
to about 300 upperclassmen.<lb/>
One of the possible things<lb/>
that SGA may have is an aware-<lb/>
ness campaign for faculty and<lb/>
students to promote the knowl-<lb/>
edge about theses forms, accord-<lb/>
ing to Wagoner.<lb/>
submit the textbook reservation<lb/>
forms is August 1. This is impera-<lb/>
tive in having first priority of the<lb/>
used books.<lb/>
One of the options that has<lb/>
been suggested is initiating a<lb/>
textbook rental system. There<lb/>
are about three universities in<lb/>
the UNC system that have this<lb/>
option, but they are phasing out<lb/>
of it, according to Wagoner.<lb/>
A textbook rental system is<lb/>
departments require you to keep<lb/>
a textbook for a minimum of<lb/>
three years.<lb/>
Along with the senate, the Par-<lb/>
ents Council, textbook resolution<lb/>
committee, faculty and staff are<lb/>
involved in improving the cost of<lb/>
textbooks at the university.<lb/>
ECU is a role model for 15<lb/>
other schools under the UNC<lb/>
system in finding ways to prevent<lb/>
high textbook costs under the<lb/>
The deadline for students to unlikely to work because some Board of Governors.<lb/>
The Board of Governors, as<lb/>
well as ECU, is putting up a Web<lb/>
site to monitor or document<lb/>
the cost of textbook in hopes of<lb/>
reducing prices.<lb/>
Again, faculty members are<lb/>
reminded that the adoption<lb/>
forms are due March 24 and stu-<lb/>
dents must turn in reservation<lb/>
forms by August 1.<lb/>

Junior political science major<lb/>
Thomas Kyle Jones is running for<lb/>
Representative for district five<lb/>
in the House of Representatives<lb/>
in the N.C. General Assembly.<lb/>
He is a Republican inspired<lb/>
by President Ronald Reagan<lb/>
rather than President Bush.<lb/>
Jones will be turning the<lb/>
required age of 21 in Octo-<lb/>
ber before Election Day.<lb/>
Jones said he finds him-<lb/>
self a qualified candidate for<lb/>
the position because "as a tax-<lb/>
paying, law-abiding citizen of<lb/>
North Carolina, it is my respon-<lb/>
sibility to hold our elected<lb/>
officials accountable for their<lb/>
actions, just like everyone else<lb/>
District five covers Bertie,<lb/>
Gates, Hertford and Kyle Jones'<lb/>
home county of Perquimans.<lb/>
Jones feels that the current<lb/>
representative of district five,<lb/>
Howard Hunter, Jr among<lb/>
others, is over-taxing N.C. citi-<lb/>
zens to make up for over-spend-<lb/>
ing in Raleigh. This is not fair<lb/>
according to Kyle Jones, who<lb/>
really seems to know what he's<lb/>
doing going for this position.<lb/>
"Personally, I believe that my<lb/>
tax dollars could be spent much<lb/>
more wisely, and 1 intend to hold<lb/>
my representative accountable for<lb/>
his decisions to raise taxes and<lb/>
other decisions in the General<lb/>
Assembly that don't represent<lb/>
a majority of his constituency<lb/>
by running against him as the<lb/>
Republican candidate said Jones.<lb/>
Kyle Jones experienced much<lb/>
stress after buying his first piece<lb/>
of real estate at the age of 19,<lb/>
while working pressing hours<lb/>
to maintain it. Since then, he<lb/>
has been curious about where<lb/>
his tax money is actually going.<lb/>
When asked what his plans<lb/>
were to do with this opportunity,<lb/>
Jones said, "to let Representa-<lb/>
tive Hunter know that there's<lb/>
a crowd of his constituency out<lb/>
there that is very dissatisfied with<lb/>
what he's doing. Running for the<lb/>
N.C. House at such a young age<lb/>
will also assist me in getting my<lb/>
name out to the public for future<lb/>
instances that I might seek higher<lb/>
elective office and gaining an<lb/>
experience that few have the priv-<lb/>
ilege of having under their belt<lb/>
The main issue Jones is run-<lb/>
ning on is the "Taxpayers Bill of<lb/>
Rights" saying that, "If we were<lb/>
to enact the Taxpayers Bill of<lb/>
Rights, our government would<lb/>
have to abide by this basic for-<lb/>
mula for every new budget: New<lb/>
Government Spending (for that<lb/>
year), population increase (per-<lb/>
cent) plus inflation (percent)<lb/>
Jones is the youngest person<lb/>
to run for a state office in N.C.<lb/>
history. He is a serious can-<lb/>
didate and would appreciate<lb/>
the support of fellow students.<lb/>

Grant awarded to alumni<lb/>
to continue research<lb/>
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
ECU alumna Renea Baker<lb/>
was awarded an $8,000 grant to<lb/>
continue research studies on the<lb/>
approach taken by high school<lb/>
Advanced Placement statistics<lb/>
students to solve mathematical<lb/>
probability questions versus<lb/>
middle school statistics students.<lb/>
The grant was awarded by<lb/>
the National Council of Teach-<lb/>
ers of Mathematics (NCTM) and<lb/>
the Edward G. Begle Fund. This<lb/>
organization gives grants to full-<lb/>
time teachers of grades K-l 2 who<lb/>
teach mathematics.<lb/>
Baker is collaborating with<lb/>
Robin Rider, assistant professor of<lb/>
mathematics, on research studies<lb/>
Rider initiated while earning her<lb/>
master's degree. Rider's research<lb/>
consists of very similar topics, in<lb/>
which Rider acts as a mentor and<lb/>
Baker acts as an observer accord-<lb/>
ing to Rider.<lb/>
Rider's research looks at the<lb/>
way a college level AP statistics<lb/>
student determines the fairness<lb/>
in a situation where probability<lb/>
is involved, the reasoning they<lb/>
used to determine this and the<lb/>
distribution of probability in that<lb/>
situation.<lb/>
These things are compared<lb/>
to the decisions a middle school<lb/>
student would make in the same<lb/>
situation without the classical<lb/>
and procedural training that a<lb/>
college level student has in prob-<lb/>
ability and statistics.<lb/>
"This research looks at how<lb/>
students estimate theoretical<lb/>
probability from taking empirical<lb/>
trails through computer simula-<lb/>
tions said Rider.<lb/>
An example of this research<lb/>
would be comparing the out-<lb/>
come of the decision that each<lb/>
level student would have when<lb/>

1EE SCHWARZ<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Sam Walton died in 1992 of<lb/>
cancer. If you take the sum of the<lb/>
net worth's of Sam Walton's heirs<lb/>
and compare them to the likes<lb/>
of Bill Gates and Warren Buf-<lb/>
fett, the two richest men in the<lb/>
world, then you would find that<lb/>
Walton, if he were alive, would<lb/>
dwarf both Gates and Buffett<lb/>
in terms of personal net worth.<lb/>
Wal-Mart was started in<lb/>
1962 by Walton after success-<lb/>
ful stints with U.S. Army Intel-<lb/>
ligence and Benjamin Franklin<lb/>
department stores. Walton ran<lb/>
the stores so well that his was<lb/>
the top store in his six-state<lb/>
region. By using the profits from<lb/>
this venture, he opened the<lb/>
predecessor to Wal-Mart that<lb/>
was known as Walton's 5&10.<lb/>
Wal-Mart, the world's largest<lb/>
retailer, is a colossus of the busi-<lb/>
ness world. In 2005 Wal-Mart had<lb/>
$312 billion in revenue, 80 per-<lb/>
cent of which was earned in the<lb/>
U.S. With plans to open 20 new<lb/>
stores in the China during 2006,<lb/>
Wal-Mart will be on its way to<lb/>
having an equal number of stores<lb/>
in China as it does in the U.S.<lb/>
Wal-Mart currently has 3,700<lb/>
stores in the United States and<lb/>
56 in China. It is expected that in<lb/>
the next 20 years, Wal-Mart will<lb/>
have achieved its goal in China.<lb/>
How does Wal-Mart do so<lb/>
well? Wal-Mart does well namely<lb/>
by having a large number of items<lb/>
at low prices, thereby creating<lb/>
countless synergies and econo-<lb/>
mies of scale among its millions<lb/>
of products which lower the over-<lb/>
all inventory cost in its stores,<lb/>
also by having low labor costs and<lb/>
benefits, much to the chagrin of<lb/>
employees too destitute to afford<lb/>
proper medical coverage. The<lb/>
lack of medical benefits is seen<lb/>
by some as having an adverse<lb/>
affect on taxpayers as many of<lb/>
Wal-Mart's 1.3 million employees<lb/>
are low income people who have<lb/>
no hope of covering themselves<lb/>
or their children, thereby put-<lb/>
ting a huge strain on Medicaid.<lb/>
Medical costs are soaring<lb/>
much higher than general infla-<lb/>
tion and most companies are<lb/>
struggling to contain these<lb/>
costs. Wal-Mart's health care<lb/>
bill, which has compounded<lb/>
annually over the last four years,<lb/>
is not $1.5 billion. A lot of debate<lb/>
is going on about whether the<lb/>
employer or the government<lb/>
should cover low-income people.<lb/>
While Wal-Mart is not alone<lb/>
in trying to contain these costs<lb/>
while appeasing critics, two<lb/>
goals which seem to be mutually-<lb/>
exclusive, it does have a higher<lb/>
proportion of uncovered employ-<lb/>
ees. The nation's labor force as a<lb/>
whole has one-third of its mem-<lb/>
bers uncovered; one-half of Wal-<lb/>
Mart's employees are uncovered.<lb/>
The disparity between Wal-<lb/>
Mart's and the nation's work force<lb/>
may be due to the type of work<lb/>
involved. Retail jobs like cashier<lb/>
do not pay really well anywhere<lb/>
and as such are in low demand by<lb/>
more educated people. The good<lb/>
thing is that Wal-Mart provides<lb/>
jobs for these people who other-<lb/>
wise might not have jobs at all.<lb/>
The thought of how much of a<lb/>
strain that would place upon the<lb/>
nation's social systems dwarfs the<lb/>
strain being put upon Medicaid.<lb/>
So it is unfair to blame Wal-<lb/>
Mart for the social problems<lb/>
in the U.S. when other factors<lb/>
such as the total national health<lb/>
expenditures, that increased by<lb/>
7.7 percent in 2003 which is four<lb/>
times the rate of inflation in 2003,<lb/>
and Wall Street expectations.<lb/>
It should be noted how Wall<lb/>
Street reacted to Costco Whole-<lb/>
sale, a direct competitor that is<lb/>

about 100 miles east of Pittsburgh.<lb/>
His body was discovered about nine<lb/>
hours after police in a neighboring<lb/>

Joseph Causey, 19, fordrunken driving,<lb/>
said Robert Stewart III, the district<lb/>
attorney in Huntingdon County, Pa.<lb/>
Causey acknowledged his role in<lb/>
the robbery and killing, Stewart<lb/>
said. He also implicated the couple,<lb/>
Rebecca Matthews, 23, and Michael<lb/>
John Paul Macias, 24, both of whom<lb/>
are from Huntingdon. All three gave<lb/>
statements to police, Stewart said.<lb/>
Stenfte and Causey worked for<lb/>

campaign finance violations tied to<lb/>
the video poker industry. The board<lb/>
is expected to review evidence that<lb/>
people within the video poker industry<lb/>
made anonymous contributions, used<lb/>

Crowley said his car lot sits across<lb/>
from a convenience store once<lb/>

said Johnson approached him In<lb/>

Nagln says New Orleans has<lb/>
better levees, plans for upcoming<lb/>
hurricane season<lb/>
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans<lb/>
is better prepared for the upcoming<lb/>
hurricane season because of stronger<lb/>
floodwalls and better evacuation<lb/>
plans since Hurricane Katrina, Mayor<lb/>
Ray Nagin said In an interview<lb/>
Tuesday.<lb/>
"We should be able to sustain another<lb/>
Katrina the mayor said.<lb/>
"If a Category 5 hits us, probably the<lb/>
city will be gone and the levees will<lb/>
still be standing. The work they're<lb/>
doing is just incredible Nagin said of<lb/>
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.<lb/>
Residents who note the city survived<lb/>
the worst of the Aug. 29 storm but<lb/>
then was swamped when floodwalls<lb/>
broke, inundating 80 percent of the<lb/>
city with brackish water, have heavily<lb/>
criticized the Corps, which designed<lb/>
and built the city's levees. Many have<lb/>
expressed fear about the condition<lb/>
of the levees as the June 1 start of<lb/>
hurricane season approaches.<lb/>
The mayor said he believes the city<lb/>
can be mostly restored in the next<lb/>
five years.<lb/>
New Orleans officials estimate<lb/>
about 189,000 of the city's roughly<lb/>
455,000 pre-storm residents have<lb/>
returned, and Nagin said he expects<lb/>
a significant jump in population after<lb/>
the end of the school year, when<lb/>
many families with children enrolled<lb/>
in schools elsewhere can return<lb/>
without disrupting their education.<lb/>
The worst-case scenario is the state<lb/>
creates an incredible bureaucracy<lb/>
to issue this money, everything gets<lb/>
bogged down and bottle-necked<lb/>
and lots of people get frustrated<lb/>
and we kind of limp along at half the<lb/>
population we had he said.<lb/>
On Monday, Nagin endorsed<lb/>
a proposal that would allow all<lb/>
residents to rebuild homes in<lb/>
neighborhoods shattered by the<lb/>
hurricanes. An advisory commission<lb/>
had recommended flooded<lb/>
neighborhoods be replaced with<lb/>
parks and that the city go slow in<lb/>
rebuilding low-lying areas.<lb/>

Coast Guard Academy football player<lb/>
should be court-martialed on sexual<lb/>
assault charges ended Tuesday with<lb/>
the defense declining to call any<lb/>
witnesses.<lb/>
Coast Guard Cadet Webster M. Smith,<lb/>
22, has been accused by seven<lb/>
female cadets of misconduct ranging<lb/>
from improper touching to rape<lb/>
between May and November 2005.<lb/>
Five of those cadets testified In secret<lb/>
at the Article 32 hearing, the military<lb/>
equivalent of a grand jury.<lb/>
The defense declined to call any<lb/>
witnesses Tuesday, leaving the<lb/>
case in the hands of Cmdr. Steven<lb/>
Anderson, who will report to the<lb/>
superintendent of the academy, Rear<lb/>
Adm. James C. Van Sice. Van Sice<lb/>
must decide within a week whether<lb/>
to court-martial Smith.<lb/>
"He said, 'Oh please, you wanted it<lb/>
she testified. That's when she said,<lb/>
There is no way in hell I would have<lb/>
wanted to have sex with you last night,<lb/>
even if I was sober<lb/>
Another witness, Coast Guard<lb/>
cadet Jere Cherni, testified that the<lb/>
alleged victim became pregnant and<lb/>
underwent an operation that she felt<lb/>
was immoral. After objections from<lb/>
Smith's attorneys, Cherni was not<lb/>

(KRT) Jessica Serrano,<lb/>
a student at the University of<lb/>
Miami, is no stranger to travel.<lb/>
Last summer she backpacked<lb/>
through Europe; in 2004, she<lb/>
studied in New Zealand and<lb/>
Australia. This year, she's going<lb/>
to Southeast Asia, a new destina-<lb/>
tion that she feels would benefit<lb/>
most from her tourist dollars,<lb/>
especially areas damaged by the<lb/>
2004 tsunami.<lb/>
She isn't the only student<lb/>
you'll see roaming the world.<lb/>
In any foreign country this<lb/>
summer, you're guaranteed to<lb/>
see at least a handful of U.S.<lb/>
students. An easy way to identify<lb/>
them: They'll be carrying maps,<lb/>
English-something dictionaries<lb/>
and seam-split backpacks over-<lb/>
flowing with souvenirs and dirty<lb/>
clothes.<lb/>
For decades, college students<lb/>
have ventured out of the United<lb/>
States for a summer of backpack-<lb/>
ing. Some travel because they<lb/>
seek insight into an unfamiliar<lb/>
culture, others are eager to cel-<lb/>
ebrate summer, graduation or<lb/>
final months of freedom.<lb/>
"It's my last chance said DA<lb/>
Epstein, a senior at Nova South-<lb/>
eastern University. He plans to<lb/>
spend the summer before gradu-<lb/>
ate school in Europe, flying into<lb/>
London and visiting friends in<lb/>
Italy.<lb/>
"The overall trend for col-<lb/>
lege-age students is Europe<lb/>
said Sarah-Jane Wilton, com-<lb/>
munications coordinator at STA<lb/>
Travel, a discount student travel<lb/>
company. Though students tend<lb/>
to gravitate toward traditional<lb/>
European favorites like Britain,<lb/>
Italy and France, travel experts<lb/>
say young people also like to go<lb/>
to places that have been in the<lb/>
public eye.<lb/>
"We saw a huge increase in<lb/>
Athens trips after the summer<lb/>
2004 Olympics in Athens said<lb/>
Jaimee Shield, a marketing spe-<lb/>
cialist at Contiki, a California-<lb/>
based travel tour company spe-<lb/>
cializing in all-inclusive adven-<lb/>
ture packages for 18-to-35-year-<lb/>
olds. "We are now seeing a hike<lb/>
in our Italian trips because of<lb/>
the Olympics<lb/>
Athletic and other special<lb/>
events tend to attract college<lb/>
students who long to participate<lb/>
as viewers or fans.<lb/>
Nicolette Imam, a Trinidad<lb/>
native studying at Florida Inter-<lb/>
national University, plans to<lb/>
attend the World Cup in Ger-<lb/>
many this summer. "It's very<lb/>
exciting because Trinidad quali-<lb/>
fied for the first time this year<lb/>
she said.<lb/>
Fernando Anzoategui, an FIU<lb/>
student, plans to visit France this<lb/>
summer in hopes of seeing the<lb/>
Tour de France.<lb/>
While special events like the<lb/>
World Cup or the Tour de France<lb/>
are the highlight of the summer<lb/>
for some, others purposefully<lb/>
veer away from locales saturated<lb/>
with media hype.<lb/>
"We just want to surf said<lb/>
Vannia Giacoman, an FIU stu-<lb/>
dent planning a one-week trip<lb/>
with friends to Hawaii.<lb/>
Though tours around the<lb/>
United States and Hawaii are<lb/>
among Contiki's offerings, the<lb/>
company's most popular trip<lb/>
this summer is Western Europe:<lb/>
Italy, France, London, Germany<lb/>
and Austria.<lb/>
"For my college graduation<lb/>
present, I'm asking my parents<lb/>
for a Contiki trip to Europe said<lb/>
Agustina Prigoshin, an FIU stu-<lb/>
dent. "I'd like to visit several places<lb/>
while I'm on that side of the world<lb/>
Prigoshin likes the fact that<lb/>
Contiki trips are all-inclusive,<lb/>
and she won't have to worry<lb/>
about unexpected costs.<lb/>
Prlscilla Caceres took Italian<lb/>
language classes at FIU to prepare<lb/>
for a high school trip she will<lb/>
chaperon to Tuscany and Prague.<lb/>
"I'm infatuated with Italian cul-<lb/>
ture Caceres said.<lb/>
There also seems to be increas-<lb/>
ing interest in travel to more<lb/>
exotic location in the Far East<lb/>
and South America. STA Travel<lb/>
has booked more trips to Machu<lb/>
Picchu and Ecuador this summer<lb/>
than in the past, Wilton said.<lb/>
With more students craving<lb/>
unusual vacation locales, tour<lb/>
companies like Contiki try to<lb/>
cater to these demands, adding<lb/>
new trip options. "People want<lb/>
to travel further east. We have a<lb/>
new trip to Croatia, by popular<lb/>
demand, and our new trip from<lb/>
Berlin to Budapest, also going<lb/>
to Prague and Vienna, is very<lb/>
popular<lb/>
An FIU study-abroad film pro-<lb/>

Under cross-examination, Strizki<lb/>
acknowledged that she did not know<lb/>
what happened while Smith and her<lb/>
friend were alone, or the details of<lb/>
their sexual history. Friends said the<lb/>
two had had an on-again, off-again<lb/>
sexual relationship.<lb/>

hostile attitudes and inappropriate<lb/>
treatment of women also persisted<lb/>

100 gunmen storm Iraqi jail, kill<lb/>
police and free fellow Insurgents<lb/>
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - About 100<lb/>
masked gunmen stormed a prison<lb/>
near the Iranian border Tuesday,<lb/>
cutting phone wires, freeing all the<lb/>
inmates and leaving behind a scene<lb/>
of devastation and carnage, 20 dead<lb/>
policemen, bumed-out cars and a<lb/>
smoldering jailhouse.<lb/>
At least 10 attackers were killed in<lb/>
the dawn assault on the Muqdadiyah<lb/>
lockup on the eastern fringe of the<lb/>
Sunni Triangle, police said. The raid<lb/>
showed the mostly Sunni militants<lb/>
can still assemble a large force,<lb/>
capable of operating in the region<lb/>
virtually at will, even though U.S.<lb/>
and Iraqi military officials said last<lb/>
year that the area was no longer an<lb/>
insurgent stronghold.<lb/>
In all, 33 prisoners were freed,<lb/>
including 18 insurgents who were<lb/>
detained Sunday during raids by<lb/>
security forces in the nearby villages<lb/>
of Sansal and Arab, police said. It<lb/>
was the capture of those insurgents<lb/>
that apparently prompted Tuesday's<lb/>
attack. The 15 other inmates were<lb/>
a mix of suspected insurgents and<lb/>
common criminals.<lb/>
In an Internet posting Tuesday night,<lb/>
the military wing of the Mujaheddin<lb/>
Shura Council, a militant Sunni<lb/>
Muslim insurgent group, purportedly<lb/>
claimed it carried out the operation.<lb/>
The posting said the group killed "40<lb/>
policemen, liberated 33 prisoners<lb/>
and captured weapons<lb/>
Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan, ranking<lb/>
Democrat on the Senate Armed<lb/>
Services Committee, said: "April<lb/>
is fine, but it is necessary that this<lb/>
commitment be kept in order for<lb/>
there to be continued support for<lb/>
the presence of American troops<lb/>
in Iraq<lb/>
However, President Bush said<lb/>
Tuesday that the decision about<lb/>
when to withdraw all U.S. troops from<lb/>
Iraq will fall to future presidents and<lb/>
Iraqi leaders, suggesting that U.S.<lb/>
involvement will continue at least<lb/>
through 2008.<lb/>
Clinical trial drug caused monkey<lb/>
glands to swell before disastrous<lb/>
human test In Britain<lb/>
LONDON (AP) - The experimental<lb/>
drug that caused convulsions and<lb/>
organ failure in the first humans it<lb/>
was tested on only left monkeys with<lb/>
swollen glands, and there was nothing<lb/>
to predict the disastrous effects on<lb/>
people, the drug company's chief<lb/>
scientist said Tuesday.<lb/>
The medical study on six previously<lb/>
healthy men has raised fresh<lb/>
questions over safety and whether<lb/>
volunteers have enough information<lb/>
to weigh the risks. Two men remained<lb/>
in a coma Tuesday and four others<lb/>
were seriously ill, but improving after<lb/>
participating in the trial last week.<lb/>
"It felt like we stepped into some sort<lb/>
of horror film Raste Khan, one of<lb/>
two men who were given placebos<lb/>
in the trial of TGN1412, a drug to treat<lb/>
leukemia and other ailments, told The<lb/>
Associated Press.<lb/>
David Glover, former chief medical<lb/>
officer at biotech company Cambridge<lb/>
Antibody Technology, said testing<lb/>
drugs like TGN1412 must go on<lb/>
despite the tragedy.<lb/>
"We need to understand the issues we<lb/>
face and look at creative solutions<lb/>
he said.<lb/>
Most Phase 1 trials, in which the drug is<lb/>
tested on humans for the first time, are<lb/>
conducted in industrialized nations.<lb/>
About 350 tests are authorized in<lb/>
Britain each year.<lb/>
Complicated health regulations<lb/>
and the need for sophisticated<lb/>
infrastructure usually prevent such<lb/>
trials from being carried out in<lb/>
developing nations. Phase 2 and 3<lb/>
trials, in which the drug is tested on<lb/>
patients in need of treatment, take<lb/>
place in poor countries.<lb/>
The procedure for selecting healthy<lb/>
volunteers for Phase 1 trials has<lb/>
caused controversy in Britain.<lb/>
Others say that without offering<lb/>
financial incentives it would be<lb/>
extremely difficult to get subjects to<lb/>
participate in Phase 1 tests.<lb/>
"It's a fine line. How do we attract<lb/>
people to do something for which<lb/>
there is not much reward?" Derbyshire<lb/>

Rider used previous infor-<lb/>

school students and applied it to<lb/>
research she started when work-<lb/>
ing on her master's.<lb/>
Rider taught AP statistics<lb/>
at D.H. Conley High School in<lb/>
Greenville and Baker replaced her<lb/>
position in 2001 when Rider left<lb/>
to pursue her master's degree.<lb/>
When Rider began her<lb/>
research, she used Baker's AP<lb/>
statistics class to do her research.<lb/>
Baker became more involved in<lb/>
the research as it progressed and<lb/>
the two decided to collaborate<lb/>
on the studies.<lb/>
The research has revealed<lb/>
that the AP students who have<lb/>
more training in the subject<lb/>
have greater troubles with not<lb/>
realizing when to apply the<lb/>
principles they have learned and<lb/>
when to just use their common<lb/>
sense reasoning, according to<lb/>
Rider.<lb/>
Baker will receive her grant<lb/>
money and begin research work<lb/>
in May 2006. Her research will<lb/>
compare the outcome of the<lb/>
same situatiorts that Rider is<lb/>
researching of Rider's probability<lb/>
and data class and Baker's AP<lb/>
statistics class.<lb/>
This will be follow-up<lb/>
research involving the same<lb/>
teachers, same classes, same<lb/>
problems and same questions.<lb/>
The difference is the amount of<lb/>
training the students now have<lb/>
and the way the teachers present<lb/>
the subject after their research<lb/>
findings.<lb/>
Rider said that one of the<lb/>
main purposes of this research is<lb/>
to "teach students to use statis-<lb/>
tics and not just do statistics<lb/>
Rider and Baker presented<lb/>
their finding at the North Ameri-<lb/>
can Chapter of the International<lb/>
Group of Psychology of Math-<lb/>

Roanoke, Va.<lb/>
The two are attempting to<lb/>
distribute their research findings<lb/>
in other ways as well. They have<lb/>
submitted a research proposal<lb/>
to NCTM for a conference that<lb/>
will be held in Atlanta in April<lb/>
2007.<lb/>
Baker also has submitted a<lb/>
proposal to the Psychology of<lb/>
Math Education for a conference<lb/>
that will be held in October. This<lb/>
will be information presented by<lb/>
Baker alone.<lb/>
Rider and Baker are also<lb/>
attempting to publish articles<lb/>
in the Mathematic Teacher which<lb/>
will present their ideas to change<lb/>
the curriculum of AP statistics<lb/>
and Mathematical Thinking and<lb/>
Learning.<lb/>
Mathematical Thinking and<lb/>
Learning asked them to submit<lb/>
a manuscript to them because<lb/>
of the lack of research done in<lb/>
this area.<lb/>
The publication and distribu-<lb/>
tion of their research will be used<lb/>
to encourage more teachers to do<lb/>
research as well.<lb/>

THURSDAY March 23,2006<lb/>
Our View<lb/>
It's crunch time, ECU<lb/>
Now that Spring Break is over, it is time to focus<lb/>
on school again. As of today, Thursday, March 23,<lb/>
there are only 24 class days left until the end of<lb/>
spring semester. There is not much time yet to pull<lb/>
those grades up, whether It be from a F to a D or<lb/>
from a B to an A.<lb/>
With the semester winding away to practi-<lb/>
cally nothing, there are a few things that all ECU<lb/>
students should be doing to be sure they go out<lb/>
with a bang this April.<lb/>
1. If you are not already doing so, start using<lb/>
a planner. This will help you to break down the rest<lb/>
of the semester day by day, allowing you to see<lb/>
what commitments you have each day. Another<lb/>
advantage of using a planner is that you can<lb/>
coordinate all of your obligations - school, work<lb/>
and social - on a monthly calendar and prioritize<lb/>
what needs to be done when.<lb/>
2. Try making yourself a daily schedule. Make<lb/>
one for each day of the week, including everything<lb/>
from personal grooming to time for your favorite TV<lb/>
shows. Though it will take you a little while to map<lb/>
out each day, Saturdays and Sundays included,<lb/>
it will give you a better idea of what time you are<lb/>
wasting.and what you are not spending enough<lb/>
time on. If nothing else, it may show you that your<lb/>
two-hour block of time for "Desperate Housewives"<lb/>
and "Grey's Anatomy" is feasible.<lb/>
3. Sit down and analyze what you have been<lb/>
doing thus far in all of your classes. Average your<lb/>
grades and figure out if your performance is up to<lb/>
par. What kind of studying have you been doing that<lb/>
works? What definitely did not work? Does the profes-<lb/>
sor have any success advice? Make a study plan for<lb/>
each class and stick to it This hellish routine is only<lb/>
for another 24 days; you can tough it out<lb/>
4. School is important, but don't forget about<lb/>
your friends and family. These are the people in<lb/>
your life who are always there when you need them<lb/>
and now Is not the time to break those bonds. You<lb/>
may be really stressed out when exams roll around<lb/>
and in need of some support.<lb/>
5. Spending all that time studying and meet-<lb/>
ing social obligations can take a toll on everyone's<lb/>
body. Take a little time to give your body some<lb/>
attention. This does not mean go to the tanning bed,<lb/>
but it does mean planning some time for personal i<lb/>
pampering, taking a walk or going to the gym. Our !<lb/>
bodies are amazing things, but they cannot function<lb/>
to the best of their abilities if you abuse them.<lb/>
So there it is, the list of things you should be<lb/>
doing to be sure you are successful this semester.<lb/>
Realistically, if you can achieve three out of five of<lb/>
these objectives, vou should do OK - never settle<lb/>
for mediocre. It's crunch time ECU, make these j<lb/>
last 24 days count<lb/>

Can you hear me, Mr Disney? I have some advice<lb/>
Your beloved columnist<lb/>
contacts a beloved<lb/>
pioneer<lb/>
GARY MCCABE<lb/>
BITTER BOULEVARD<lb/>
This week I wanted to do some-<lb/>
thing a bit different with my column.<lb/>
Last week I spent spring break at<lb/>
beautiful Disney World. While it<lb/>
wasn't the first time for me, this<lb/>
particular visit elicited so many<lb/>
thoughts and observations about<lb/>
the park that I wished I could<lb/>
bring them to the attention to Mr.<lb/>
Walt Disney himself. Unfortu-<lb/>
nately, Mr. Disney passed away<lb/>
in 1966 and it would seemingly<lb/>
be impossible - for anybody else.<lb/>
You see, there are millions of<lb/>
beliefs of what heaven is like. Per-<lb/>
sonally, I see heaven as a beautiful<lb/>
cloud city (not unlike Care-a-lot).<lb/>
However, instead of flying around<lb/>
in cloud cars, those lucky residents<lb/>
spend most of their time reading<lb/>
(and admiring) my weekly columns.<lb/>
If you think I'm kidding, you seri-<lb/>
ously have no idea what a megalo-<lb/>
maniac I truly am.<lb/>
Mr. Disney, the following letter<lb/>
is directed to you; however, I think<lb/>
that simple Earth-dwellers like my<lb/>
online arch enemy "Big Al" could<lb/>
find enjoyment in reading it as well.<lb/>
Mr. Disney,<lb/>
I could have spent this year's<lb/>
spring break a thousand different<lb/>
ways - drunk in Key West, drunk<lb/>
in Cancun, drunk in my apart-<lb/>
ment - but I decided to spend mine<lb/>
at Disney World drunk.<lb/>
Why Disney World? Forget<lb/>
the fact that it was pretty much<lb/>
free for me to go. And forget<lb/>
the fact that I avoid beaches of<lb/>
Cancun and Daytona because<lb/>
there isn't an FDA-approved sun<lb/>
tan lotion strong enough to keep<lb/>
my German-Irish bum from burn-<lb/>
ing like a bad case of chlamydia.<lb/>
I went to Disney World because<lb/>
- even for a 23-year-old, contemp-<lb/>
tuous excuse for a human being<lb/>
like me - it truly is the "Happiest<lb/>
Place on Earth 1 love Disney<lb/>
World except for Animal King-<lb/>
dom, Epcot, Downtown Disney,<lb/>
Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon<lb/>
and 83 percent of Disney-MGM<lb/>
Studios. The rest (the Magic King-<lb/>
dom) is pure entertainment gold.<lb/>
The rides aren't anything to<lb/>
write home about and the food,<lb/>
while surprisingly good for a<lb/>
theme park, is obscenely expen-<lb/>
sive. It doesn't matter - Disney<lb/>
World has something I haven't<lb/>
found anywhere else in this coun-<lb/>
try: charm. I know that was your<lb/>
goal from day one, Mr. Disney, and<lb/>
to that end, you have succeeded<lb/>
immeasurably.<lb/>
1 feel like a child walking<lb/>
around your park. Whether I'm<lb/>
taking photos with your iconic<lb/>
creations (and lesser ones like<lb/>
Rafiki, whose line is invariably<lb/>
shorter), watching the amazing<lb/>
fireworks displays or ignoring<lb/>
the not-so-subtle racial overtones<lb/>
in the Song of the Soufi-themed<lb/>
Splash Mountain, I forget about<lb/>
all my deadlines, finals and my<lb/>
dreaded post-graduation job hunt.<lb/>
However, that's not to say<lb/>
there aren't improvements to<lb/>
be made, sir. My first suggestion<lb/>
involves children. Frankly, there<lb/>
are just too many of them. From<lb/>
the 9-year-olds still riding in<lb/>
strollers to the 11-year-olds still<lb/>
afraid of Goofy, they're a nuisance.<lb/>
New rules must be implemented.<lb/>
First of all, it bothers me to<lb/>
see parents carrying their sleeping<lb/>
tyke to and fro. If they can't stay<lb/>
awake, what's the point of being<lb/>
there? They're just taking up space,<lb/>
giving me one less chance to soar<lb/>
on the Dumbo ride. All children<lb/>
incapable of standing on their own<lb/>
should be ushered out of Disney<lb/>
- much like Michael Eisner was.<lb/>
Aside from the "standing" rule,<lb/>
how about a couple of days a week<lb/>
for adults only - adults 18 to 55,<lb/>
that is (old people are just as slow).<lb/>
Speaking of obstruction, there's<lb/>
another disturbing problem I've<lb/>
found and it involves America's<lb/>
growing problem: the obesity "epi-<lb/>
demic I know the American gov-<lb/>
ernment now classifies it as a disease,<lb/>
but I have little sympathy person-<lb/>
ally. When I see a large man riding<lb/>
around in a cart only to get up and<lb/>
walk to the men's room (or more<lb/>
likely, a hot dog stand) without a<lb/>
problem, I begin to think that it's far<lb/>
too easy to get one of those scooters<lb/>
(which may or may not allow them<lb/>
to cut in line I've seen that it<lb/>
does. People with true disabilities<lb/>
are exempt from the "walking rule"<lb/>
obviously.<lb/>
While I'm making room in the<lb/>
park, Mr. Disney, I have another<lb/>
suggestion that most people won't<lb/>
like too much. Disney World has<lb/>
done an amazing job of encourag-<lb/>
ing and promoting diversity and<lb/>
attracting money - I mean visi-<lb/>
tors - from around the globe. But<lb/>
as a bona fide American genius,<lb/>
it must make your blood boil to<lb/>
look down from cloud heaven<lb/>
and see large families draped in<lb/>
red, Canadian flag-infested (and<lb/>
matching) outfits.<lb/>
It doesn't take tacky red-and-<lb/>
white clothing for me to spot a<lb/>
Canadian. The Canadian is the<lb/>
wide-eyed, goofy-grinned spec-<lb/>
tator complete with an awkward<lb/>
personality and uncanny ability<lb/>
to stop on a dime - and hold<lb/>
up hundreds of people behind<lb/>
them - to take a photo of Mickey<lb/>
having his photo taken with<lb/>
someone else's young child.<lb/>
If Canadians were eliminated<lb/>
from Disney, or at least diverted<lb/>
away from the Magic Kingdom<lb/>
(let 'em rot at Epcot), it would<lb/>
be better for everyone involved.<lb/>
Mr. Disney, I know you are no<lb/>
longer with us. However, if my<lb/>
calculations concerning heaven<lb/>
are correct, you can influence all<lb/>
mortals to do your bidding. Should<lb/>
the young, the old, the obese and,<lb/>
most importantly, the Canadians<lb/>
be restricted access from your<lb/>
Magic Kingdom, it would be so<lb/>
awesome. While you're at it, how<lb/>
about a day - once a week - when<lb/>
only those of German or Irish<lb/>
or German-Irish with opinion<lb/>
columns named Gary can enter. I<lb/>
hate crowds.<lb/>
Sincerely (not really, unless<lb/>
you're completely dense and<lb/>
don't understand what a farce is)<lb/>

In My Opinion<lb/>
(KRT) Did you know that<lb/>
it's a federal crime to listen to<lb/>
your music on the wrong brand<lb/>
of portable music player?<lb/>
It's true. At least, it is if you buy<lb/>
your music online. Take Apple's<lb/>
iTunes Music Store, which recently<lb/>
sold its billionth song. Apple talks<lb/>
a lot about the convenience and<lb/>
affordability of its music, but they<lb/>
don't mention its darker side:<lb/>
it's only compatible with Apple<lb/>
products. MP3 players from other<lb/>
companies aren't supported.<lb/>
In a free market, that wouldn't<lb/>
be so bad. Manufacturers of com-<lb/>
peting MP3 players, such as Sony,<lb/>
Creative and Samsung, could<lb/>
provide software to automatically<lb/>
convert the music to a compatible<lb/>
format. But that would be illegal,<lb/>
thanks to a little-known law called<lb/>
the Digital Millenium Copyright<lb/>
Act, which Congress passed in<lb/>
1998.<lb/>
The DMCA was billed as an<lb/>
anti-piracy measure. It prohibits<lb/>
anyone from "circumventing" a<lb/>
copy protection scheme such as<lb/>
that used to scramble songs from<lb/>
the iTunes store, or from creating<lb/>
software to do so. It was hoped<lb/>
that those restrictions would pre-<lb/>
vent hackers from unscrambling<lb/>
music or movies and uploading<lb/>
them to the Internet.<lb/>
But that's not how things have<lb/>
worked out in the real world. After<lb/>
nearly a decade on the books, it's<lb/>
hard to find any evidence that the<lb/>
DMCA has reduced piracy. More<lb/>
and more content is being released<lb/>
In copy-protected formats, but as<lb/>
every college student knows, the<lb/>
latest movies and songs are still<lb/>
widely available on peer-to-peer<lb/>
file sharing networks. Even worse,<lb/>
new copy-protection formats are<lb/>
routinely hacked within weeks of<lb/>
release, and hacking tools are read-<lb/>
ily available from offshore Web<lb/>
sites. "Copy protection" hasn't<lb/>
done much to prevent copying.<lb/>
Most computer scientists think<lb/>
that's not going to change. Indeed,<lb/>
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has said as<lb/>
much. In a remarkably candid<lb/>
Rolling Stone interview shortly<lb/>
after the launch of the iTunes<lb/>
Music Store, he said that "we have<lb/>
Ph.Ds here, that know the stuff<lb/>
cold, and we don't believe it's pos-<lb/>
sible to protect digital content<lb/>
He pointed out that as soon as<lb/>
someone finds a flaw - and every<lb/>
copy protection scheme has them<lb/>
- she can unscramble the file and<lb/>
upload it to the Internet. Once that<lb/>
happens, all the copy protection<lb/>
technology in the world won't do a<lb/>
thing to stop its further spread.<lb/>
But if Jobs knows that copy<lb/>
protection technologies don't stop<lb/>
piracy, why does Apple use them?<lb/>
One reason is that the recording<lb/>
industry, whose executives lack<lb/>
computer science degrees, has<lb/>
insisted on it. But another reason<lb/>
may be that it allows Apple to lock<lb/>
its customers Into using its prod-<lb/>
ucts. Under the DMCA, software to<lb/>
convert your copy-protected music<lb/>
library to a different format is ille-<lb/>
gal. That means that if a customer<lb/>
wants to switch to a non-Apple<lb/>
device, he will need to re-purchase<lb/>
all of his music in the new format.<lb/>
If his library is large, that could<lb/>
cost hundreds of dollars.<lb/>
Such compatibility problems<lb/>
aren't limited to Apple products.<lb/>
Customers who buy music from<lb/>
Yahoo's online store-which uses<lb/>
Microsoft's copy-protection soft-<lb/>
ware-have the opposite problem:<lb/>
they cannot listen to their music<lb/>
on an iPod. Ironically, Microsoft<lb/>
has adopted the slogan "Plays for<lb/>
Sure" for its format, despite the fact<lb/>
that it's not compatible with the<lb/>
world's most popular MP3 player.<lb/>
Nor is the problem limited<lb/>
to music. Video technologies are<lb/>
an even bigger mess. Google sells<lb/>
videos in a format that is incom-<lb/>
patible with virtually all por-<lb/>
table video devices on the market.<lb/>
Videos purchased from the iTunes<lb/>
store-like songs-only work with<lb/>
Apple products. Perhaps worst of<lb/>
all, there is no legal way for DVD<lb/>
owners to watch their movies on<lb/>
portable devices like the IPod. It's<lb/>
legal to "rip" your CDs so you can<lb/>
listen to them on your iPod, but<lb/>
doing the same thing with your<lb/>
DVDs is against the law.<lb/>
Congress may have intended<lb/>
to target copyright infringers,<lb/>
but in practice the DMCA mostly<lb/>
harms paying customers by pre-<lb/>
venting them from playing legally<lb/>
acquired content on the device of<lb/>
their choice. The Constitution says<lb/>
that the purpose of intellectual<lb/>
property is to "promote the prog-<lb/>
ress of science and the useful arts<lb/>
When a copyright law begins to<lb/>
interfere with peoples' freedom to<lb/>
enjoy the content they have legally<lb/>
purchased, Congress needs to give<lb/>
it another look.<lb/>

Not everyone who subleases their apartment is doing so<lb/>
as a result of poor planning. I, for one, found a job in a<lb/>
different area when I graduated in December and had<lb/>
to relocate. Tell me, would you want to live 400 miles<lb/>
away from your apartment and still get stuck with the<lb/>
bill? I think not!<lb/>
Why don't they just fire Johnson for eating cereal at<lb/>
work all the time? Seriously, I really hate that com-<lb/>

I want to thank the football player who gave me his shirt<lb/>
and carried me back to my room from downtown the<lb/>
Wednesday night before spring break. That was prob-<lb/>
ably the nicest thing any stranger has ever done. There<lb/>
need to be more nice guys like you around.<lb/>
Do the new Doublemint Twins commercials creep<lb/>
anyone else out besides me?<lb/>
Your book bag does not need its own seat on the bus.<lb/>
To the person who thinks we are spoiled brats who<lb/>
have mommy and daddy pay for college: at least my<lb/>
parents were smart enough to create a college fund for<lb/>
me so that I won't be paying off student loans for the<lb/>
rest of my life.<lb/>
Why is it that the nursing school makes your GPA to be<lb/>
so important? The nursing field is more about personal<lb/>
experience and people skills than how much info you<lb/>
can cram in your head in college. By the way they are<lb/>
doing things now, there are some not-so-charming"<lb/>
people getting into the program.<lb/>
I do not think Fifth street should be renamed, and I am<lb/>
an African American.<lb/>
I had to stay in town to work my shifts in addition to<lb/>
picking up my coworker's shift so she could go and do<lb/>
whatever she did at the tourist trap she visited. I had<lb/>
no break so she could go lay on her back for a week.<lb/>
You suck!<lb/>
Marriage is legalized prostitution. Think about it, so<lb/>
many females today demand that their significant<lb/>
other pay for most, if not all of their meals, be 'treated<lb/>
like princesses and be given huge engagement rings<lb/>
before they say yes.<lb/>
If I can pay taxes here, I should get in-state tuition<lb/>

Prejudice or to pre-judge. To the person the other day<lb/>
talking about the prejudiced comments in the rants,<lb/>
do you not judge the person next to you by how they<lb/>
are dressed, their hygiene or perhaps what they drive?<lb/>
Hmm, didn't think so. Maybe you should be the first<lb/>
to sign up for a tolerance class.<lb/>
The squirrels on campus are planning something. I<lb/>
can feel it!<lb/>
I'm so glad I went over my utilities bill, but they don't<lb/>
tell until five months later.<lb/>
I know quite a few students get bored when their Eng-<lb/>

this out for a reason.<lb/>
I know you guys want to act hard when you're around<lb/>
your boys, but when your girlfriend comes to talk to<lb/>
you, don't ignore her or treat her like a guy. She is<lb/>
your girl for a reason. That just makes us think of how<lb/>
inconsiderate guys really are. Can a girl get a hug or a<lb/>
kiss goodbye? 1 know all boys are guilty of it; in not<lb/>
that hard. Would you rather see her getting that from<lb/>
another guy?<lb/>
Midnight snacks are awesome.<lb/>
How much do you think a small yogurt at the Wright<lb/>
Place should cost? Surely $1.16 is too much!<lb/>
Three years ago I paid $360 at Pirates Cove and never<lb/>
ever in three years went over on electricity or anything,<lb/>
but oh woah as soon as they make it convenient for us<lb/>
(checking my status online like I care) I all of a sudden<lb/>
go over my electricity by $13.95. Because that makes<lb/>
sense right? Paying more rent and spending a majority<lb/>
of last semester on campus in the Rivers building equals<lb/>
going over on my bill.<lb/>
Uh yea, the "luxury SUV" is spelled Tahoe not the<lb/>
same spelling as Taho, the wireless internet connec-<lb/>
tion. I'm going to go ahead and generalize and group<lb/>
you with a lot of other people and go out on a limb by<lb/>
guessing you came here because you didn't get into<lb/>
UNC or Duke because your SAT English score wasn't<lb/>
good enough. Ha ha, loser.<lb/>
Why is it that one of the Greene hall RAs has a bulletin<lb/>
board up for Women's History Month and yet only<lb/>
posted information about black women? On excuse<lb/>
me, African American women. What about Scottish,<lb/>
Hispanic, Chinese, etc? They are women too. If you<lb/>
want to dedicate months to certain races or genders,<lb/>
be fair and celebrate them all.<lb/>
Are the elevators in Clement ever going to get fixed? I<lb/>
have been taking the stairs to the seventh floor for the<lb/>
past two weeks! Although I must say, the stair climbing<lb/>
Is getting me into peak physical condition.<lb/>
Keeping Fifth street "as is" is logical, not racist.<lb/>
I'm confused. During the winter it was 80 degrees, but<lb/>
now it's spring and it's in the 50s outside. Did the two<lb/>
seasons switch and no one thought to include me?<lb/>
I think it is so rude when the students in my class pack<lb/>
up before the professor is done lecturing. I mean, where<lb/>
do you have to go in such a hurry that two minutes will<lb/>
make that much of a difference anyway?<lb/>
The girl sitting next to me in class yawns without cover-<lb/>
ing her mouth. I mean, I really don't want to smell her<lb/>
breath, much less see her tonsils.<lb/>
You are not supposed to be as tan in the winter as you<lb/>
are in the summer. You just look stupid and not natural<lb/>
plus, give your skin a break already!<lb/>
I hate how the government is so paranoid about ste-<lb/>
reotyping when looking for terrorists. It's a simple fact<lb/>
that all of them have been Muslims of Middle-Eastern<lb/>
descent. Deal with it.<lb/>
Why can't Microsoft make enough Xbox 360s? Stop<lb/>
sending them to Japan and Europe and let your home<lb/>
country get first bat!<lb/>
If you don't like ECU, then transfer or drop out. But no<lb/>
one cares to hear you complain about how miserable<lb/>
you are. Here is a quarter, call someone who cares!<lb/>
I don't care if your jeans cost $45 or $245. They still<lb/>
make you look deformed. Money isn't going to buy you<lb/>
a body so don't share with me, or the other ones in the<lb/>
house, how much you spent!<lb/>

Nancy and David Auffarth both sport shades at the beach; Nancy's cost $20 and David's $90, but offer the same UV protection.<lb/>
Price not as important as level of protection<lb/>
(KRT) For Nancy and<lb/>
David Auffarth, reasons for<lb/>
choosing sunglasses couldn't<lb/>
be more different than their<lb/>
gender.<lb/>
One wears high-end shades.<lb/>
The other, cheapies.<lb/>
One goes for durability. The<lb/>
other a cool look.<lb/>
But never during their occa-<lb/>

from the sun come up, "because<lb/>
Nancy said, "my $20 knockoffs<lb/>

There was a time eye experts<lb/>

Auffarth's $90 Pacific Traders<lb/>
were far safer than his wife's<lb/>
knockoffs. But all kidding aside,<lb/>
many experts say, Nancy Auf-<lb/>
farth is probably right.<lb/>
"Most high-end sunglasses<lb/>
have glass lenses, which are<lb/>
pretty much guaranteed to have<lb/>
100 percent protection from<lb/>
UV rays said Kenny Moscot, a<lb/>
licensed optician and president<lb/>
of the respected New York eye<lb/>
shop Sol Moscot Opticians.<lb/>
"And most cheaper ones have<lb/>
plastic lenses. As they're made,<lb/>
the plastic only provides about<lb/>
60 percent protection.<lb/>
But what they do is dye the<lb/>
plastic shades darker, bringing<lb/>
the protection level up to 100<lb/>
percent. So it is true that they<lb/>
are safer today<lb/>
That fact is nice to know, the<lb/>
Auffarths said, but they insist<lb/>
that toughness and appearance<lb/>
were their main criteria.<lb/>
"I guess I really wasn't think-<lb/>
ing medical reasons said David<lb/>
Auffarth, while the New York<lb/>
couple was on vacation in Florida.<lb/>

these because of the way they<lb/>

But there is such a thing as too<lb/>

"At some point, those glasses<lb/>
on the absolute cheapest end of<lb/>
the spectrum are nothing more<lb/>
than dark plastic in a frame. And<lb/>
that's no protection at all.<lb/>
"You can go less expensive if<lb/>
you want these days, but don't<lb/>
overdo it Moscot said. "Think<lb/>
about it. How exactly do you<lb/>
know the cheaper glasses in the<lb/>
drug store are providing adequate<lb/>
protection? Because they have a<lb/>
sticker on them?"<lb/>
Bootlegged name-brand<lb/>

stop piracy, why does Apple<lb/>
use them? One reason is that<lb/>
the recording industry, whose<lb/>
executives lack computer science<lb/>
degrees, has insisted on it. But<lb/>
another reason may be that it<lb/>
allows Apple to lock its customers<lb/>
into using its products. Under the<lb/>
DMCA, software to convert your<lb/>
copy-protected music library to<lb/>
a different format is illegal. That<lb/>
means that if a customer wants<lb/>
to switch to a non-Apple device,<lb/>
he will need to re-purchase all of<lb/>
his music in the new format.<lb/>

Wall Street cried bloody murder.<lb/>
If Wall Street is unhappy then<lb/>
it will rate Wal-Mart's stock<lb/>
lower than it should be. Inves-<lb/>
tors will see this lower rating<lb/>
and be less inclined to buy it.<lb/>
If investors are not buying the<lb/>
stock then it will be difficult for<lb/>
Wal-Mart to convince an invest-<lb/>
ment banker to underwrite new<lb/>
shares to finance the growth.<lb/>
Wal-Mart and other U.S. com-<lb/>
panies cannot afford to upset<lb/>
Wall Street and hope to do well.<lb/>

SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
When The Matrix debuted in<lb/>
theaters in 1999, it was a smash<lb/>
hit. It was a powerful success,<lb/>
the fifth best movie of the year.<lb/>
It grossed more money than Big<lb/>
Daddy, The Blair Witch Project and<lb/>
1999 Best Picture Oscar winner<lb/>
American Beauty to name a few. In<lb/>
addition to giving Keanu Reeves<lb/>
a role that will undoubtedly stick<lb/>
with him for the rest of his life<lb/>
(no one will want to remember<lb/>
his Bill and Ted series, 1 promise<lb/>
you), the movie gave young<lb/>
moviegoers food for thought and<lb/>
challenged them to think outside<lb/>
the box.<lb/>
A movie that can alter a<lb/>
person's thought pattern in<lb/>
such a way has succeeded in<lb/>
ways that can't be measured<lb/>
with box office numbers. Well,<lb/>
maybe it can when you think<lb/>
about the fact that the sequel,<lb/>
The Matrix Reloaded had the best<lb/>
opening weekend of 2003 (the<lb/>
same year that Lord of the Rings:<lb/>
Return of the King came out). For<lb/>
this reason, Andy and Larry<lb/>
Wachowski (collectively known<lb/>
as the Wachowski Brothers)<lb/>
became icons.<lb/>
Other than sequels and spin-<lb/>
offs of The Matrix, the Wachows-<lb/>
kis have not done much. As a<lb/>
matter of fact, the next major<lb/>
movie they have a hand in just<lb/>
hit theaters. V for Vendetta is<lb/>
another Wachowski Brothers<lb/>
product. They did not direct,<lb/>
but they wrote the script for this<lb/>
movie that stars Hugo Weav-<lb/>
ing and Natalie Portman. After<lb/>
watching, this reviewer has one<lb/>
stark conclusion: whatever the<lb/>
Wachowski Brothers have to<lb/>
say about the world, you should<lb/>
listen.<lb/>
Vendetta is everything you<lb/>
want in a movie and then some.<lb/>
It is another movie that will<lb/>
shove your mind outside the<lb/>
box and then ask you to take a<lb/>
look around. Without a lot of<lb/>
fight scenes, it is action, suspense,<lb/>
thrills and chaos all wrapped up<lb/>
in a neat little symbol.<lb/>
The movie puts you in the<lb/>
middle of a futuristic England<lb/>
ruled by a government that<lb/>
overprotects the people and<lb/>
imposes a curfew. It simultane-<lb/>
ously introduces you to Evey, a<lb/>
beautiful English woman (played<lb/>
by Portman) and V, an imposing,<lb/>
mysterious gentleman in a mask<lb/>
(played by Weaving). Once they<lb/>
meet each other, the movie pro-<lb/>
ceeds like dominos falling. V's<lb/>
goal is to take down the totalitar-<lb/>
Natalie Portman stars as Evey with Hugo Weaving as "V in V for Vendetta, currently in theaters.<lb/>
ian government one building at<lb/>
a time in the name of freedom,<lb/>
and as you would surmise, a few<lb/>
people might object to it.<lb/>
The Wachowski Brothers<lb/>
have an amazing gift for writ-<lb/>
ing stories that weave you into<lb/>
them and have you diving and<lb/>
darting along with each plot<lb/>
development. Throughout the<lb/>
movie, you'll see things that<lb/>
reveal a little more at a time<lb/>
and throw in some details that<lb/>
you're a little unsure of. By the<lb/>
end of the movie, you've watched<lb/>
them all come together to form<lb/>
an exquisite picture that blows<lb/>
you away.<lb/>
The acting is very convinc-<lb/>
ing, and a few roles stand out.<lb/>
For one, Weaving speaks his<lb/>
dialogue with a conviction and<lb/>
a smooth style that makes you<lb/>
eat up every word as if you've<lb/>
never heard such words ever<lb/>
before. Honestly, Weaving could<lb/>

There are plenty of cover<lb/>

of the fine establishments of<lb/>
downtown Greenville. I'm sure<lb/>
we can all attest to catching at<lb/>
least some of an 80z Enuff or a<lb/>

If you have been lucky enough<lb/>
to catch their shows at Pantana<lb/>
Bob's (and Corrigan's before<lb/>
that), then you will know that<lb/>
the Victor Hudson Band delivers<lb/>
a performance so full of energy<lb/>
and southern-fried classic rock<lb/>

tap their feet in appreciation.<lb/>
This lively quintet also likes<lb/>
to change it up with unique 1980s<lb/>

Music city: Nashville, Tennessee<lb/>
More than just the country<lb/>
capital of the country<lb/>
JOHN BOSCO<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
While most people might<lb/>
associate Nashville solely with<lb/>
country music, there's a chunk<lb/>
of rock, blues, R&B and even<lb/>
hip-hop history that has passed<lb/>
through the city.<lb/>
However, it's true that Nash-<lb/>
ville is best known for country<lb/>
music. Dubbed "Music City, USA"<lb/>
by radio announcer David Cobb,<lb/>
Nashville lives up to its reputa-<lb/>
tion. During the 1950s, the music<lb/>
industry centered around the<lb/>
city, and the recording district<lb/>
became known as Music Row.<lb/>
Interestingly enough, though,<lb/>
the establishment of Nashville<lb/>
as the country capital is due to<lb/>
a rock legend. When Elvis Pre-<lb/>
sley signed to RCA, RCA chose<lb/>
Nashville as the location for their<lb/>
Southeast branch.<lb/>
But as rock became more<lb/>
popular, country sales dropped<lb/>
and needed a makeover. With<lb/>
the drop came Chet Atkins' and<lb/>
Owen Bradley's transformations<lb/>
of the country sound to vocal<lb/>
choruses and mellow strings<lb/>
(commonly referred to as the<lb/>
"Nashville Sound").<lb/>
Some of the hottest coun-<lb/>
try acts have lived in Nash-<lb/>
ville and include modern<lb/>
country musicians like Faith<lb/>
Hill, Alan Jackson and Shania<lb/>
Twain. Some of the legends<lb/>
include Emmylou Harris, Dolly<lb/>
Parton, Hank Williams, Waylon<lb/>
Jennings and Willie Nelson.<lb/>
While it's easy to see Nash-<lb/>
ville as a crucial part of country<lb/>
music history, a lot of times it is<lb/>
failed to be seen as an important<lb/>
jump start for many musicians<lb/>
with diverse backgrounds.<lb/>
Many people don't know<lb/>
about Jimi Hendrix's roots in<lb/>
Nashville, but that's where his<lb/>
story really got started. Hendrix<lb/>
and bandmate Billy Cox moved<lb/>
to Nashville, where they played<lb/>

Modern music: Just a giant<lb/>
fad headed for doom?"<lb/>
JOHN BOSCO<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
When you think of fads,<lb/>
your mind probably focuses in<lb/>
on that perfect image of a mem-<lb/>
orable fashion flop like, well,<lb/>
almost all fashion of the 1980s<lb/>
(though today it might seem<lb/>
that what's old is new again).<lb/>
Maybe it's something edible<lb/>
i you're thinking about - like<lb/>
Tab, you know, that diet cola<lb/>
drink from the same era filled<lb/>
with fashion flops (which for<lb/>
whatever reason is making a<lb/>
return as a fruity energy drink<lb/>
- but no jokes here, Tab remains<lb/>
my favorite soda of all time<lb/>
and I pray nightly that they<lb/>
don't cut production on it).<lb/>
Maybe it's even something<lb/>
as ridiculous as the pet rock<lb/>
(got to love those hippies).<lb/>
But knowing that this<lb/>
column is about music, I'd guess<lb/>
you're starting to wonder, once<lb/>
again, what on earth I'm get-<lb/>
ting at. Well, regardless of what<lb/>
your mental image of a fad is,<lb/>
I'd say that it's probably the rare<lb/>
case that someone immediately<lb/>
classifies music as a huge fad.<lb/>
But isn't it just as true that<lb/>
music, like fashion, comes and<lb/>
goes in time and that only the<lb/>
best music stays (or at least the<lb/>
best music of the time lives on)?<lb/>
Of course it is. Music is<lb/>
constantly changing, and<lb/>
specifically, the face of popu-<lb/>
lar music is ever changing.<lb/>
Today's predominantly pop-<lb/>
ular genre is probably hip-hop,<lb/>
but 40 years ago that wasn't the<lb/>
case; in the 1960s it was rock<lb/>
bands like the Beatles (argue<lb/>

MARK ROMANO<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Many fans of the Yeah Yeah<lb/>
Yeahs will be disappointed in<lb/>
Show Your Bones, their new album<lb/>
due out March 28. If you loved<lb/>
the squeaks and squeals that<lb/>
Karen O made on 2003's Fever to<lb/>
Tell, don't bother with this one;<lb/>
there are far fewer of those. On<lb/>
the other hand, fans who appre-<lb/>
ciate the growth and progression<lb/>
that a band must make in order to<lb/>
maintain any sort of credibility<lb/>
in the music world, pick it up;<lb/>
you'll love it. Don't get me wrong,<lb/>
though, this is still the Yeah Yeah<lb/>
Yeahs we're talking about.<lb/>
Karen still lets some orgasmic<lb/>
wails escape her sultry larynx,<lb/>
but this time around you can tell<lb/>
that she's really developed her<lb/>
vocal style and is coming into<lb/>
her own as a singer.<lb/>
Nick Zinner's thousand<lb/>
pound guitar tone is replaced<lb/>
with a thinner, more produced<lb/>
sound, but he makes up for it by<lb/>
layering several tracks of guitar as<lb/>
well as keyboards on top of each<lb/>
other, and he even busts out an<lb/>
acoustic guitar for songs such as<lb/>
"Sweets" and "Gold Lion the first<lb/>
single from the album. Actually,<lb/>
almost every song has an acoustic<lb/>
guitar on it, but don't let that<lb/>
throw you off.<lb/>
You can get your dance rock<lb/>
fix from "Deja Vu" and "Honey<lb/>
Bear which will be great to<lb/>
hear at a live show and are sure<lb/>
to get your blood flowing, and<lb/>
the acoustic guitar is inevitably<lb/>
drowned out halfway through<lb/>
the songs. What a lot of people<lb/>
don't know about the band is<lb/>
that Nick and Karen actually<lb/>
started out as a folk duo, and the<lb/>
band's DVD Tell Me What Rock-<lb/>
ers To Swallow (2004) gave fans<lb/>
a preview of "Cheated Hearts<lb/>
one of the more typical songs on<lb/>
the album.<lb/>
Most people that won't like<lb/>
this album are the ones that<lb/>
expect every band to stay the<lb/>
same and want more of the past.<lb/>
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs weren't<lb/>
afraid to explore different song<lb/>
writing styles and arrangements<lb/>
on this one, which earns them<lb/>
incredible respect in my book,<lb/>
but even the band isn't sure of<lb/>
how to describe the new album.<lb/>
"Show Your Bones is what hap-<lb/>
pens when you put your finger in<lb/>
a light socket said singer Karen<lb/>
O in a press interview.<lb/>
"Maybe there is some of that<lb/>
electric current flowing through<lb/>
the tracks of our album, illumi-<lb/>
nating us from the inside out for<lb/>
you to laugh at and cry to or fry<lb/>
to. Or not<lb/>
All in all, the album is excel-<lb/>
lent. It bleeds art-rock and they<lb/>
for sure have not sold out in<lb/>
any way. They're doing what<lb/>
they should be doing, which is<lb/>
growing and caring about their<lb/>
music, but alas, there are no<lb/>
scorchers like "Tick" and "Date<lb/>
With the Night" from the previ-<lb/>
ous album.<lb/>
Show Your Bones shows that<lb/>
the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are going<lb/>
to be around much longer<lb/>
than most people expected and<lb/>
are incredibly talented song<lb/>
crafters.<lb/>

Vendetta<lb/>
from page B1<lb/>
h If i -<lb/>
Mark Phoenix (Willy), Ian BurfiekJ (Rngerman) and Natalie Portman (Evey).<lb/>
find it compelling. He's that<lb/>
good. People just haven't seen it<lb/>
before because when they heard<lb/>
him as Agent Smith in The Matrix,<lb/>
he was the bad guy and no matter<lb/>
how he spoke the words, they<lb/>
hated them. He gives his revolu-<lb/>
tionary iconoclast character such<lb/>
charisma that you're cheering<lb/>
for him throughout the entire<lb/>
movie.<lb/>
Portman also had an impres-<lb/>
sive performance as a woman<lb/>
with a united past and future.<lb/>
She has given some very impres-<lb/>
sive performances since bursting<lb/>
onto the scene as Padme in Star<lb/>
Wars Episode I, and this role only<lb/>
helps reinforce that idea. You<lb/>
can always tell an actor is giving<lb/>
a great performance when you<lb/>
feel your emotions stirred and<lb/>
ignited by what happens to the<lb/>
character.<lb/>
Vendetta is absolutely burst-<lb/>
ing at the seams with positives.<lb/>
For one, anyone with a love of<lb/>
history will be thrilled by this<lb/>
movie and devilishly grin when<lb/>
they notice just how alike Adam<lb/>
Sutler (played by John Hurt) is<lb/>
to another certain gentleman<lb/>
in history (1 don't think it's a<lb/>
coincidence that his position was<lb/>
"High Chancellor"). This movie is<lb/>
a case study in revolution, free-<lb/>
dom and what sort of world we<lb/>
could be living in, or very well<lb/>
might live in one day. That's the<lb/>
beauty of this script and the way<lb/>
the Wachowski Brothers wrote it<lb/>
- it makes you recognize how cer-<lb/>
tain things line up with the world<lb/>
outside the movie theater.<lb/>
There are only one or two<lb/>
major fight scenes throughout<lb/>
the movie, but all the Wachowski<lb/>
junkies can rest assured because<lb/>
they're amazing. They'll remind<lb/>
you of the fighting scenes from<lb/>
The Matrix that made you coo<lb/>
like a baby.<lb/>
The plot of the movie will<lb/>
have you following along eagerly.<lb/>
While you'll get it at the end,<lb/>
you'll want to watch it again<lb/>
just to see certain parts again to<lb/>
deepen your understanding, and<lb/>
that makes it golden.<lb/>
It contains a lot of action;<lb/>
it's not major macho guy movie<lb/>
action (all shooting and slashing<lb/>
and screaming) but swift, beau-<lb/>
tiful and thrilling action that<lb/>
makes you follow every second<lb/>
and think about when you'll<lb/>
come back to see it again, and<lb/>
you should.<lb/>
If you want to explore some-<lb/>
thing else related to the movie,<lb/>
research Guy Fawkes (the man<lb/>
whose face is the mask of V) and<lb/>
the Gunpowder Plot of 1605,<lb/>
because it is true and a group did<lb/>
conspire to blow up the English<lb/>
Parliament.<lb/>
Above all, watch this movie<lb/>
again and again. It's another one<lb/>
of those movies that will put us"<lb/>
outside the box, somewhere every-<lb/>
one needs to visit once in a while.<lb/>

While Greenville is the band's<lb/>
home base, they are looking<lb/>
to play other spots around the<lb/>
state and also have an EP being<lb/>
released in about six months.<lb/>
There is already one original<lb/>
song, written by Kirkman, and<lb/>
five more to follow.<lb/>
With so much motivation to<lb/>
take their music to the next level 8<lb/>
and put on crowd-pleasing shows, g<lb/>
isn't it time that ECU embraced<lb/>
the Victor Hudson Band and<lb/>
claimed them as their own?<lb/>

Attention ECU Sophomores<lb/>
If you have earned 45-60 hours and at least 30 of<lb/>
them were completed at ECU (not counting Math<lb/>
0001 or 0045), you are required to respond to the<lb/>
Sophomore Survey<lb/>
before you can pre-register for either<lb/>
Summer or Fall 2006 courses.<lb/>
If vour earned credit hours fall within these limits you should have<lb/>
received a message on March 2 at your ECU Exchange email address<lb/>
asking you to participate in the survey. The message explained that your<lb/>
record would be "tagged" so that you could not register until you responded<lb/>
to the survey. If you did not receive the email notice, it means that the<lb/>
survey and registration restriction does not apply to you.<lb/>
Many of you have now responded, but this is to encourage the rest of you<lb/>
to respond as soon as possible. When you submit your survey responses<lb/>
the "tag" will be removed from your record so that you can pre-register.<lb/>
Registration staff can verify that your responses were received and that the<lb/>
tag was removed.<lb/>
We really want your feedback to the survey questions, but you may choose<lb/>
to opt out by submitting a blank form. Opting out will also remove the<lb/>
sophomore survey tag that would prevent you from pre-registering.<lb/>
The survey period is March 2 - April 24. During that period you can<lb/>
complete the survey by going to the ECU "One-Stop" web site, entering<lb/>
your ECU Exchange email userid and password to sign on, and clicking on<lb/>
"Sophomore Survey" in the box labeled "Surveys You can also access the<lb/>
"One-Stop" from:<lb/>
Mendenhall Computer Lab, Wright Place Cafeteria, the Austin Building,<lb/>
and Joyner Library East.<lb/>
Please respond to the survey before sophomore pre-registration begins<lb/>
on March 23. This will also help you avoid delays during pre-registration<lb/>
when the workload on ECU computers is at a peak. All remaining tags for<lb/>
this survey will be removed from student records on April 25, the day after<lb/>
the survey closes<lb/>

and lived on Jefferson Street.<lb/>
Jefferson Street is the traditional<lb/>
heart of Nashville's black com-<lb/>
munity with a huge rhythm and<lb/>
blues scene.<lb/>
Hendrix performed along-<lb/>
side B.B. King, Little Richard<lb/>
and Curtis Knight as a back-up<lb/>
musician, but got most of his rec-<lb/>
ognition with the Isley Brothers.<lb/>
He toured the Chitlin' Circuit,<lb/>
which is the southeast string<lb/>
of venues that catered to black<lb/>
audiences and made a reasonable<lb/>
amount of money.<lb/>
Even a more modern musi-<lb/>
cian, Ben Folds, passed through<lb/>
Nashville. Folds left Winston-<lb/>
Salem, N.C. to pursue a publish-<lb/>
ing deal from a publisher in<lb/>
Nashville.<lb/>
Even hip-hop is relying on<lb/>
Nashville. Young Buck of the<lb/>
G-Unit crew released the album<lb/>
Straight Outta CaShville, which is a<lb/>
reference to Nashville. The city is<lb/>
growing in its importance to dirty<lb/>
south hip-hop, proving it isn't all<lb/>
country and rock in Nashville.<lb/>
More than any one genre,<lb/>
though, Nashville remains the<lb/>
major hub of music production<lb/>
for many artists from different<lb/>
musical backgrounds.<lb/>

bands of all time) and musical<lb/>
geniuses like Jimi Hendrix and<lb/>
Bob Dylan were front and center<lb/>
in the popular music scene. And<lb/>
I'd bet that 30 years from now, it's<lb/>
not going to be the dirty south<lb/>
rappers who are lauded with<lb/>
fans and living in lavish homes<lb/>
featured on MTV's "Cribs<lb/>
Anyone remember back in<lb/>
the late 1990s when a rash of boy<lb/>
bands broke loose on the popu-<lb/>
lar music scene? What about<lb/>
teen divas like Britney Spears or<lb/>
Christina Aguilera? Who's going<lb/>
to admit to having those posters<lb/>
on their walls when they were in<lb/>
middle school?<lb/>
Probably no one, and that is<lb/>
precisely why popular music acts<lb/>
like N SYNC are fads and not<lb/>
given a lot of credit; who is going<lb/>
to look back 40 years from now<lb/>
and say, "Wow, the Backstreet<lb/>
Boys really revolutionized the<lb/>
concept of music?"<lb/>
And that's what separates the<lb/>
Beatles and popular musicians<lb/>
from other eras from your run-<lb/>
of-the-mill,modern heartthrob<lb/>
boy-bands. The Beatles earned<lb/>
their fame and deserved it. They<lb/>
delivered album after album<lb/>
after album of great music. Sgt.<lb/>
Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band<lb/>
is sometimes even credited as the<lb/>
first concept album.<lb/>
Listen to a copy of The White<lb/>
Album and then listen to a copy<lb/>
of anything produced by any<lb/>
modern day teen-frenzy band<lb/>
and I think you'll see where I'm<lb/>
going with this.<lb/>
So why the change?<lb/>
1 can't say I know, but I'm<lb/>
sure the answer is out there. I<lb/>
will say that not all popular<lb/>
music is bad. Super-successful<lb/>
acts like Radiohead, Beck, The<lb/>
Strokes, Franz Ferdinand and the<lb/>
White Stripes are all well-deserv-<lb/>
ing talent. Songwriters from<lb/>
past generations, such as Bruce<lb/>
Springsteen and Neil Young, are<lb/>
even finding success in recent<lb/>
years with new releases.<lb/>
Maybe indie music will have<lb/>
all the luck in the future on the<lb/>
popular music scene (though<lb/>
I suppose it wouldn't be called<lb/>
"indie" anymore).<lb/>
But who knows, maybe 40<lb/>
years from now it'll be the world<lb/>
music scene blowing up and<lb/>
taking the dark turn that rock is<lb/>
known for - sex, drugs and world<lb/>
music, anyone?<lb/>
Be sure to tune in to WZMB<lb/>
91.3 while we do our best to make<lb/>
sure the "f" in fad is replaced<lb/>
with an "r<lb/>

THURSDAY March 23, 2006<lb/>
The Round of 16 from A to Z<lb/>
(KRT) A is for Aristotle,<lb/>
the ancient philosopher George<lb/>
Mason coach Jim Larranaga<lb/>
dusted off and trotted<lb/>
out after his Patri-<lb/>
ots had knocked<lb/>
off North Caro-<lb/>
lina on Sunday.<lb/>
While talk-<lb/>
ing of his<lb/>
upstart<lb/>
team, he<lb/>
reminded<lb/>
all that the<lb/>
old Greek once<lb/>
had said,<lb/>
"Excel-<lb/>
lence is<lb/>
not an<lb/>
act. It's a habit<lb/>
B is for Big Baby,<lb/>
which is the nickname<lb/>
of 6-foot-9-inch, 310-<lb/>
pound LSU forward<lb/>
Glen Davis.<lb/>
C is for Jim Calhoun<lb/>
and Connecticut, who<lb/>
together are going after<lb/>
their third national<lb/>
title in eight years. The<lb/>
Huskies are on a col-<lb/>
lision course to meet<lb/>
Duke in the champi-<lb/>
onship game, which<lb/>
would be nothing new<lb/>
to them. When they<lb/>
won it in 2004, they<lb/>
defeated the Blue Devils<lb/>
in a national semifinal.<lb/>
When they won in 1999,<lb/>
they defeated them in<lb/>
the final.<lb/>
D is for Jared Dudley,<lb/>
the 6-7 Boston Col-<lb/>
lege forward who<lb/>
teams with 6-7<lb/>
Craig Smith to<lb/>
give the Eagles<lb/>
one of the<lb/>
most-powerful<lb/>
inside pairs<lb/>
still left in the<lb/>
tourney. They<lb/>
now represent<lb/>
the ACC, which<lb/>
prefers finesse to<lb/>
fists. But they grew up<lb/>
in the Big East, where<lb/>
banging is a birthright.<lb/>
E is for Enigma,<lb/>
which could well<lb/>
be the nick-<lb/>
name of Connecticut sopho-<lb/>
more forward Rudy Gay. He is<lb/>
arguably the best pure talent in<lb/>
college basketball and certainly a<lb/>
top NBA draft pick whenever he<lb/>
decides to leave school. But his<lb/>
personality is passive, he rarely<lb/>
asserts himself and he simply<lb/>
has disappeared, on occasion,<lb/>
from games.<lb/>
F is for the Feel Good Story,<lb/>
which this year could be Bradley<lb/>
or George Mason or Wichita State.<lb/>
But remember Memphis<lb/>
guard Darius Washington Jr. on<lb/>
his knees in agony after he missed<lb/>
two foul shots with no time<lb/>
remaining in the championship<lb/>
game of last year's Conference<lb/>
USA tourney? If he had made<lb/>
them, the Tigers would have<lb/>
defeated Louisville and would<lb/>
have been in the NCAAs. With-<lb/>
out them, they were doomed to<lb/>
the NIT. Well, he rebounded from<lb/>
that failure and so did the Tigers,<lb/>
and that's a nice thing.<lb/>
G is for Guards, the strength<lb/>
of Villanova. The Wildcats start<lb/>
four who, so far, have shot down<lb/>
the adage that basketball is a big<lb/>
man's game.<lb/>
H is for Homegrown, which<lb/>
is the case with LSU. Five of its<lb/>
top six players are from Baton<lb/>
Rouge or one of its suburbs and<lb/>
the sixth, senior guard Darrel<lb/>
Mitchell, grew up just 60 miles<lb/>
away in St. Martinville.<lb/>
I is for Inconsistent, which<lb/>
is how Texas point guard Daniel<lb/>
Gibson has played. He has scored<lb/>
as many as 37 points in a game<lb/>
this season. But in 11 others<lb/>
he has failed to reach double<lb/>
figures.<lb/>
J is for Jordan Farmar, who<lb/>
with Arron Affalo gives UCLA<lb/>
the type of backcourt needed<lb/>
for tourney success. They are<lb/>
the keys for the Bruins, who<lb/>
succeeded even while battling a<lb/>
season-long rash of injuries.<lb/>
K is for Mike Krzyzewski, the<lb/>
Duke coach who is inescapable<lb/>
this time of the year. He and<lb/>
his Blue Devils have advanced<lb/>
to the regionals for the ninth<lb/>
consecutive year, which is the<lb/>
longest current streak and only<lb/>
four behind the aJI-time record<lb/>
North Carolina set between 1981<lb/>
and 1993. To put their accom-<lb/>
plishment in some perspective,<lb/>
the only teams still standing who<lb/>
advanced to the regionals last<lb/>
year are Villanova, Washington<lb/>
and West Virginia.<lb/>
L is for Jim Les, the Bradley<lb/>
coach whose first job with the<lb/>
school was ball boy. He did it<lb/>
from 1972 to 1975, which is when<lb/>
his older brother, Tom, was a<lb/>
point guard for the Braves.<lb/>
M is for Makeover, which is<lb/>
what Ben Howland has given<lb/>
UCLA. The Bruins were long a<lb/>
quintessential West Coast team,<lb/>
which means they played little<lb/>
defense and were as soft as a<lb/>
souffle. Under Howland, whose<lb/>
previous stop was Pitt, they have<lb/>
embraced defense and developed<lb/>
an attitude.<lb/>
N is for the NFL, which has<lb/>
been scouting George Mason's<lb/>
Jai Lewis. The 6-9, 295-pound<lb/>
forward played defensive end<lb/>
and tight end in high school and,<lb/>
obviously, has the body to do<lb/>
some damage on Sundays.<lb/>
O is for Over, which is the<lb/>
condition of Florida's streak of<lb/>
failures. The Gators, entering<lb/>
this tournament, had lost on the<lb/>
opening weekend to lower-seeded<lb/>
teams for five straight years. That<lb/>
is a record of futility they now<lb/>
share with Illinois (1986-90) and<lb/>
Arizona (1989-93).<lb/>
P is for Pops, which is how<lb/>
Georgetown coach John Thomp-<lb/>
son III always refers to his dad<lb/>
and former Hoyas coach John<lb/>
Thompson Jr.<lb/>
Q is for Quarterback, which<lb/>
is another position Duke point<lb/>
guard Greg Paulus played in high<lb/>
school. He threw 152 touchdown<lb/>
passes in just 45 games, set a New<lb/>
York state record with his 11,763<lb/>
career passing yards and was<lb/>
recruited heavily by major foot-<lb/>
ball programs, whom he spurned<lb/>
in favor of Krzyzewski.<lb/>
R is for Brandon Roy, the<lb/>
6-6 Washington guard who last<lb/>
season started just four games.<lb/>
Entering the tourney, he was the<lb/>
best least-known player in the<lb/>
country. Now, at least Illinois<lb/>
fans know about him.<lb/>
S is for Stats, which are<lb/>
always fun to play with. How's<lb/>
this one? The Missouri Valley (2<lb/>
of 4) and the Colonial Athletic (1<lb/>
of 2) conferences got 50 percent<lb/>
of their teams through to the<lb/>
regionals. That's the same per-<lb/>
centage as the ACC, the PAC-10<lb/>
and the Big East, and a better<lb/>
percentage than the SEC (2 of<lb/>
6), the Big 12 (1 of 4) and the Big<lb/>
Ten (0 of 6).<lb/>
T is for Mark Turgeon, the<lb/>
Wichita State coach who played<lb/>
under Larry Brown at Kansas, was<lb/>
an assistant under Brown when<lb/>
the Jayhawks won the national<lb/>
title in 1988 and stayed on to<lb/>
work for Roy Williams when Wil-<lb/>
liams succeeded Brown. That<lb/>
pedigree and the Shockers' sue- <lb/>
cess mean he's going to be one<lb/>
hot prospect next month when<lb/>
the coaching carousel starts spin-<lb/>
ning in earnest.<lb/>
U is for the Usual Suspects,<lb/>
which this year are Duke guard<lb/>
J.J. Redick and Gonzaga forward<lb/>
Adam Morrison. Vou have heard<lb/>
enough about them already and<lb/>
will be hearing still more so.<lb/>
V is for the Verb "Pittsnogled<lb/>
which was created in honor of<lb/>
West Virginia's 6-11, tattoo-laden<lb/>
Kevin Pittsnogle. Mountaineers<lb/>
fans now can buy T-shirts and<lb/>
socks and even underwear embla-<lb/>
zoned with the phrase, "You've<lb/>
Been Pittsnogled<lb/>
W is for Williams. There is<lb/>
Shelden, the Duke forward, and<lb/>
Marcus, the Connecticut point<lb/>
guard. If either is abducted by<lb/>
aliens or sidelined by foul trou-<lb/>
ble, his team is in trouble.<lb/>
X is for Mr. X-Factor, who<lb/>
always visits this time of year. He<lb/>
shows up this March in the guise<lb/>
of 7-2 Georgetown center Roy<lb/>
Hibbert, who is far from a finished<lb/>
product but already capable of<lb/>
influencing a game. Just ask Ohio<lb/>
State. He hit the Buckeyes Sunday<lb/>
with 20 points, 14 rebounds and<lb/>
three blocked shots. When he<lb/>
produces like that, the Hoyas are<lb/>
plenty tough.<lb/>
Y is for Yannick Noah, the<lb/>
former tennis star and 1983<lb/>
French Open champion whose<lb/>
son, Joakim, now stars for Flor-<lb/>
ida. The boy's mom, by the way, is<lb/>
Cecilia Rodhe, who was only Miss<lb/>
Sweden in 1978. Nice genes, huh?<lb/>
Z is for Zero, which is the<lb/>
number of Big Ten teams involved<lb/>
in this weekend's festivities.<lb/>
Player of the Year candidate<lb/>
J.J. Redick (left) will lead No. 1<lb/>
seed Duke in their quest for a<lb/>
Final Four appearance. Senior<lb/>

Krzyzewski defends beleaguered NCSU coach<lb/>
Sendek taking plenty of<lb/>
heat from critics<lb/>
(KRT) Add Duke's Mike<lb/>
Krzyzewski to the list of coaches<lb/>
rising to defend Herb Sendek<lb/>
from N.C. State's restless fans.<lb/>
On Saturday in Dallas, Texas<lb/>
coach Rick Barnes said Sendek,<lb/>
a former Barnes assistant, isn't<lb/>
properly appreciated at N.C.<lb/>
State, where some fans want<lb/>
him fired despite five straight<lb/>
NCAA tournament bids. Krzyze-<lb/>
wski complimented Sendek on<lb/>
Monday during a news confer-<lb/>
ence scheduled to discuss Duke's<lb/>
Atlanta Region semifinal meeting<lb/>
with Louisiana State.<lb/>
"He's really one of the terrific<lb/>
coaches in our country Krzyze-<lb/>
wski said. "He's a proven winner.<lb/>
Packer not<lb/>
remorseful<lb/>
It makes me appreciate what we<lb/>
have at Duke with the support<lb/>
we've had<lb/>
Some Duke boosters were<lb/>
ready to run Krzyzewski out of<lb/>
town in 1983 after the Blue Devils<lb/>
went a combined 21-34 in his<lb/>
second and third seasons. Krzyze-<lb/>
wski remains bitter with some of<lb/>
those Iron Dukes boosters to this<lb/>
day after three NCAA titles and<lb/>
10 Final Four trips.<lb/>
"There are still some (Iron<lb/>
Dukes) I would never talk to<lb/>
Krzyzewski said. "But I'll always<lb/>
talk to my president and my<lb/>
administrators, because they<lb/>
didn't flinch. Hopefully (N.C.<lb/>
State's) people won't flinch,<lb/>
either<lb/>
PACKER<lb/>
(KRT) If Bradley and<lb/>
Wichita State fans expected a<lb/>
teary apology from Billy Packer,<lb/>
then what the CBS analyst said<lb/>
Tuesday will sorely disappoint<lb/>
them.<lb/>
Packer said he found it<lb/>
"funny and amusing" that his<lb/>
questioning of NCAA tourna-<lb/>
ment selection chairman Craig<lb/>
Littlepage has become such a big<lb/>
issue to Missouri Valley Confer-<lb/>
ence fans.<lb/>
"It must be interesting to be<lb/>
a lightning rod Packer said . . .<lb/>
and he clearly has become one.<lb/>
"Some of the other networks<lb/>
have hours and hours of NCAA<lb/>
selection talk and it doesn't ever<lb/>
seem to be an issue. I don't think<lb/>
too many people had George<lb/>
Mason facing Wichita State in<lb/>
this weekend's round<lb/>
Jim Nantz certainly didn't.<lb/>
But Packer's classy partner said<lb/>
he's glad the dreamers are still<lb/>
alive.<lb/>
"They have given this tour-<lb/>
nament a special texture Nantz<lb/>
said. "(The committee) should<lb/>
feel very vindicated and I'm<lb/>
happy for them. I think this<lb/>
is the greatest tournament we've<lb/>
ever had<lb/>
Nantz said his issue was with<lb/>
the computers, not the commit-<lb/>
tee. After he called the semifinals<lb/>
and final of the Big Ten tourna-<lb/>
ment, Nantz said he came away<lb/>
thinking the conference wasn't<lb/>
particularly strong.<lb/>
"And guess which conference<lb/>
was No. 1 in the RPI?" Nantz<lb/>
said. "The Big Ten. And here the<lb/>
Big Ten is sitting on the outside<lb/>
after the first week<lb/>
Packer held firm when a TV<lb/>
reporter from Peoria pestered<lb/>
him and asked why he had<lb/>
singled out Bradley for criticism<lb/>
during the selection show.<lb/>
"I don't think I ever men-<lb/>
tioned a team he replied.<lb/>
Then Packer offered some<lb/>
perspective, talking about how<lb/>
during the 1978-79 season, he<lb/>
said Al McGuire had to be "out<lb/>
of (his) mind" for saying Indiana<lb/>
State should be ranked No. 1.<lb/>
The outcry was such that<lb/>
NBC moved Packer off a Wichita<lb/>
State-Indiana State game played<lb/>
in Terre Haute, Ind because<lb/>
network officials thought his life<lb/>
might be in danger.<lb/>
"I've been around the Valley<lb/>
for a long time Packer said.<lb/>
"I'm aware of the league. This is<lb/>
no knock on any team. This is<lb/>
an opinion that came up in that<lb/>
television program, and I think<lb/>
it has been blown way out of<lb/>
proportion<lb/>
While Nantz said he hoped<lb/>
people "aren't feeling slighted or<lb/>
as if there's any kind of grudge<lb/>
Packer offered this response<lb/>
to his critics: "It's, in a way, a<lb/>
compliment and it's very comi-<lb/>
cal to think that those two or<lb/>
three minutes (on the selection<lb/>
show) and two questions could<lb/>
be such a giant issue when it's<lb/>
really about the guys playing<lb/>
the games<lb/>

NFL commissioner will retire<lb/>
NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue recently announced his intentions to retire from the league effective in July.<lb/>
Tagliabue has served the<lb/>
league since 1989<lb/>
(KRT) The NFL already<lb/>
might have been the most popu-<lb/>
lar of American sports leagues<lb/>
when Paul Tagliabue replaced<lb/>
Pete Rozelle as commissioner<lb/>
in 1989.<lb/>
But the league did nothing<lb/>
but extend that edge in 17 sea-<lb/>
sons under Tagliabue's leader-<lb/>
ship. The NFL paused to consider<lb/>
that Monday after the 65-year-old<lb/>
Tagliabue announced he would<lb/>
retire effective in July.<lb/>
"Pro football has been the<lb/>
No. 1 sport in America for years,<lb/>
but under Paul's leadership, the<lb/>
NFL has become the dominant<lb/>
sports league in the world<lb/>
San Diego Chargers owner Alex<lb/>
Spanos said. "His vision has<lb/>
helped the league stay on the<lb/>
forefront for a new generation.<lb/>
The NFL's TV and media packages<lb/>
are second to none. The league<lb/>
has taken full advantage of new<lb/>
technologies and the Internet.<lb/>
The league added more fans<lb/>
around the world through NFL<lb/>
Europe and the American Bowl<lb/>
games.<lb/>
"Bottom line: He oversaw<lb/>
the greatest period of growth<lb/>
in league history and was able<lb/>
to maintain labor peace at the<lb/>
same time, which to me was his<lb/>
greatest accomplishment. Both<lb/>
the owners and players as well as<lb/>
the fans are enjoying the rewards<lb/>
of his leadership<lb/>
That seemed to be the consen-<lb/>
sus, that the NFL is stronger on<lb/>
most, if not all, fronts. The league<lb/>
is now in 31 cities and healthy in<lb/>
all of them. More than two-thirds<lb/>
of the teams play in stadiums that<lb/>
are new or were renovated during<lb/>
Tagliabue's time.<lb/>
There is harmony with the<lb/>
players association. That was<lb/>
something that often eluded the<lb/>
NFL in the 1980s. The league suf-<lb/>
fered work stoppages in 1982 and<lb/>
1987, but none under Tagliabue's<lb/>
watch.<lb/>
"Paul's legacy has been and<lb/>
will be expansion . . labor<lb/>
peace, revenue growth, stadium<lb/>
development, excellent com-<lb/>
petition levels on the field and<lb/>

Roddick<lb/>
'just ticked<lb/>
off right<lb/>
now'<lb/>
American tennis star in a<lb/>
funk on the court<lb/>
(KRT) Andy Roddick<lb/>
answers questions the way he hits<lb/>
tennis balls, smashes them head-<lb/>
on, no-holds-barred, emotions<lb/>
leaping off his Lacoste sleeves,<lb/>
a dash of comedy whenever he<lb/>
sees fit.<lb/>
So, when reporters last week<lb/>
fired question after question<lb/>
after Roddick's fourth-round<lb/>
loss in Indian Wells, Calif he<lb/>
spilled his guts, admitting he is<lb/>
ticked off, increasingly frustrated<lb/>
with subpar results, grasping for<lb/>
answers and missing his Cheetos<lb/>
as he heads into the NASDAQ-<lb/>
100 Open in Key Biscayne this<lb/>
week.<lb/>
Roddick was anointed the<lb/>
Next Great American Player even<lb/>
before he won the 2003 U.S.<lb/>
Open and reached No.l later that<lb/>
year. But he hasn't won a Grand<lb/>
Slam since, has lost to four play-<lb/>
ers ranked below No. 50 in the<lb/>
past two months and on Monday<lb/>
dropped to No. 4 in the world.<lb/>
"I'm not the captain of Team<lb/>
Fun right now Roddick said in<lb/>
a news conference. "I feel a little<lb/>
empty. . . . I'm just ticked right<lb/>
now. I'm just leveling with you<lb/>
guys. I'm not happy. I'm not<lb/>
going to sit here and put on my<lb/>
fun face<lb/>
Asked where the frustration is<lb/>
coming from, Roddick snapped:<lb/>
"It's coming from playing hor-<lb/>
ribly. I don't know what else<lb/>
you want. I mean, it's pretty<lb/>
simple. It's not coming from<lb/>
joy or from being thrilled with<lb/>
what I was doing out there. You<lb/>
know, it's just frustration. We've<lb/>
all been there, except I have<lb/>
people watching when I break<lb/>
something<lb/>
During his loss to 26th-ranked<lb/>
Igor Andreev at Indian Wells,<lb/>
Roddick sprayed 45 unforced<lb/>
errors, had no winners in the<lb/>
third set and was slapped with<lb/>
a point penalty after breaking a<lb/>
racket in the sixth game of the<lb/>
final set.<lb/>
"I'm irked he said. "I'm<lb/>
really upset about it. You know,<lb/>
it's not fun going into that locker<lb/>
room afterward, again feeling<lb/>
that way. It's not something I'm<lb/>
accustomed to. It's not something<lb/>
I want to become accustomed to.<lb/>
I'm glad that it really kind of<lb/>
hurts me this deep If I was OK<lb/>
with it, I think we'd have more of<lb/>
a problem<lb/>
Watching from his seat as TV<lb/>
analyst, U.S. Davis Cup captain<lb/>
Patrick McEnroe said there is no<lb/>
question Roddick is in a funk.<lb/>
"Andy's very blunt and<lb/>
honest, he doesn't sugar-coat it,<lb/>
he's really struggling McEnroe<lb/>
said. "His confidence is shaky<lb/>
right now. This is probably the<lb/>
toughest patch of his career he's<lb/>
going through. I wouldn't call it<lb/>
a crisis, but he has real struggles.<lb/>
There is no easy answer, no magic<lb/>
solution. He has to keep plugging<lb/>
away. One big tournament could<lb/>
turn it around for him<lb/>
He suggested a factor in<lb/>
Roddick's unraveling might be<lb/>
because he became "too obsessed"<lb/>
with trying to beat top-ranked<lb/>
Roger Federer, who has a 10-1<lb/>
record against Roddick, includ-<lb/>
ing victories in two Wimbledon<lb/>
finals.<lb/>
"Andy was so concerned with<lb/>
beating Federer he got away from<lb/>
what he does best, and lost sight<lb/>
of the fact that the rest of these<lb/>
guys are not bums McEnroe<lb/>
said. "They have figured out his<lb/>
big serve and big forehand, and<lb/>
they're not going to roll over for<lb/>
him. There's too much depth<lb/>
now to be worrying about one<lb/>
guy<lb/>
TV analyst Mary Carillo<lb/>
agreed: "Andy has to go back<lb/>
to playing Andy Roddick tennis<lb/>
instead of trying to figure out<lb/>
how to beat Federer. He has to<lb/>
remember what it felt like when<lb/>
he was on top, remember that<lb/>
kind of cockiness he had. Once<lb/>
you start questioning the best<lb/>
parts of your game, the rest of<lb/>
your game slips, your serve goes<lb/>
off, everything goes away<lb/>
Carillo said one thing she<lb/>
has noticed is Roddick doesn't<lb/>
take the ball on the rise as<lb/>
often as he should, prefer-<lb/>
ring rather to wait and wail on<lb/>
balls from behind the baseline.<lb/>

ROddlCk from page B7<lb/>
Roddick has had four coaches<lb/>
over the past three years. He<lb/>
parted ways with longtime coach<lb/>
Tarik Benhabiles after the 2003<lb/>
French Open and spent the<lb/>
next year and a half under the<lb/>
tutelage of Brad Gilbert. Roddick<lb/>
went 121-26 and won nine titles<lb/>
with Gilbert in his box, includ-<lb/>
ing his first and only Grand<lb/>
Slam. He finished 2003 at No.l<lb/>
as a 21-year-old. But he slipped<lb/>
behind Federer in 2004 and<lb/>
fired Gilbert at the end of that<lb/>
season.<lb/>
He worked with Dean Gold-<lb/>
fine in 2005 but dismissed him<lb/>
recently and is now being coached<lb/>
by older brother John, who runs a<lb/>
tennis academy in San Antonio.<lb/>
John pulled out some old tapes<lb/>
of Roddick a few weeks ago and<lb/>
had his younger brother watch as<lb/>
a reminder of better days.<lb/>
Andy Roddick said the video<lb/>
session didn't unearth anything<lb/>
significant, but it was helpful.<lb/>
"When you're kind of search-<lb/>
ing for something, you know<lb/>
you're capable of it, you've done<lb/>
it a million times, you can't figure<lb/>
out why it's not clicking for you<lb/>
like it always has, you know<lb/>
he said. "It was just nice to<lb/>
see it and be like, OK, that's<lb/>
what I do<lb/>
Roddick said he doesn't want<lb/>
to take away from his opponent's<lb/>
accomplishments, but he realizes<lb/>
it is weaknesses in his game that<lb/>
is helping lower-ranked players<lb/>
to beat him.<lb/>

Krzyzewski acknowledged<lb/>
that some N.C. State fans will<lb/>
say he is sticking up for Sendek<lb/>
because Duke has regularly<lb/>
defeated the Wolfpack. Duke<lb/>
is 23-3 against N.C. State since<lb/>
Sendek became coach in 1996-<lb/>
97.<lb/>
"For those people, go write<lb/>
a letter and complain about me,<lb/>
then Krzyzewski said. "Because<lb/>
I am going to say something good<lb/>
about a good guy and a really<lb/>
good coach<lb/>
Sendek is 191-132 in 10 sea-<lb/>
sons with the Wolfpack. N.C.<lb/>
State was 22-10 this season and<lb/>
was eliminated from the NCAA<lb/>
tournament in the second round<lb/>
by Texas on Sunday.<lb/>
"We had, I think, four out-<lb/>
standing teams in our confer-<lb/>
ence, and I think that State's<lb/>
included Krzyzewski said. "State<lb/>
had some problems at the end of<lb/>
the year when they were hurt and<lb/>
injured and whatever. I mean,<lb/>
they beat (George Washington)<lb/>
by (21). They were really good<lb/>

the viability of the sport and the<lb/>

the world<lb/>
"I don't know about a legacy,<lb/>
but over the years, we've accom-<lb/>
plished a lot of things Tagliabue<lb/>
said in a conference call with<lb/>
NFL reporters. "Certainly, the<lb/>
expansion of the league to 32<lb/>
teams, the growth and the popu-<lb/>
larity of the sport, the fact we<lb/>
didn't have any seasons inter-<lb/>
rupted by strikes or lockouts,<lb/>
all of those things are very, very<lb/>
important.<lb/>
"Turning around the rela-<lb/>
tionship and building a strong<lb/>
relationship with the NFL Players<lb/>
Association would be the thing<lb/>
I'm most proud of. Everyone<lb/>
involved in the NFL in the 80s<lb/>
saw (labor unrest) as a growing<lb/>
negative<lb/>
The NFL saw some defeats<lb/>
in the Tagliabue era, including<lb/>
the transfer of both Los Angeles<lb/>
franchises. LA remains without a<lb/>
team more than 10 years later.<lb/>
This year's negotiations for<lb/>
an extensive bargaining agree-<lb/>
ment were contentious. Though<lb/>
a deal was finally done, it came<lb/>
at the last hour and required<lb/>
many concessions on the part of<lb/>
the owners.<lb/>
The NFL also still lags on<lb/>
the hiring of minorities in<lb/>
head-coaching positions despite<lb/>
Tagliabue's policy encourag-<lb/>

teams have black head coaches,<lb/>
including the Chiefs with Herm<lb/>
Edwards.<lb/>
Still, Tagliabue's departure is<lb/>
viewed as a loss for the league,<lb/>
though he will stay on past July<lb/>
as a consultant.<lb/>
"Paul Tagliabue can take<lb/>
great pride in the stature the<lb/>
National Football League holds<lb/>
today among this country's pro-<lb/>
fessional sports leagues Chiefs<lb/>
presidentgeneral manager Carl<lb/>
Peterson said. "From the first, he<lb/>
was a quick read of the numer-<lb/>
ous and far-reaching changes the<lb/>
league has undergone and has<lb/>
always brought a professionalism<lb/>
to his role.<lb/>
"We will miss Paul and his<lb/>
leadership, although we are<lb/>
pleased that he has agreed to<lb/>
remain as an adviser for the next<lb/>
couple of years. Obviously, his<lb/>
counsel and expertise will prove<lb/>
invaluable to the next commis-<lb/>
sioner of the NFL<lb/>
The search for a replace-<lb/>
ment will begin next week at<lb/>
the annual NFL meetings in<lb/>
Orlando, Fla. Candidates include<lb/>
NFL executive vice president<lb/>
Roger Goodell and Atlanta Fal-<lb/>
cons president Rich McKay.<lb/>
Secretary of State Condoleezza<lb/>
Rice, a bona fide football fan,<lb/>
has made reference to an interest<lb/>
in running the league someday,<lb/>
but Sean McCormack, the State<lb/>
Department's assistant secretary<lb/>
for public affairs, said Monday<lb/>
that she is not applying for the<lb/>
post at this time.<lb/>
Tagliabue will assist in the<lb/>
search for his successor.<lb/>
"The way we'll approach it<lb/>
is to have a very comprehensive<lb/>
search that will identify both<lb/>
internal candidates whether<lb/>
it's our own offices cir those<lb/>
of the teams as well as outside<lb/>
candidates in other businesses<lb/>
or organizations Tagliabue<lb/>
said. "Weil bring a list of mul-<lb/>
tiple strong candidates to the<lb/>
owners to evaluate and start the<lb/>
winnowing-out process<lb/>
