SGA rewrites constitution<lb />
SGA President M. Cole Jones spoke at a recent meeting about the constitution, which is almost complete.<lb />
All students will be SGA<lb />
members under the new<lb />
document<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
After many years of not<lb />
being modified - since the very<lb />
first writing, actually - the SGA<lb />
administration is in its last stages<lb />
of making history by redoing the<lb />
constitution, which included<lb />
many complex rules and difficult<lb />
language to interpret.<lb />
M. Cole Jones, SGA Presi-<lb />
dent, said, "The constitution<lb />
was misused and abused for<lb />
personal gain and other alterna-<lb />
tive motives besides serving the<lb />
students<lb />
"It was very visible, being the<lb />
detailed document it was. It was<lb />
filled with many loopholes and'<lb />
complicated language. It was really<lb />
time for a change and to basically<lb />
give it a whole new face lift<lb />
According to Jones, the<lb />
last two SGA administrations<lb />
attempted to revise the consti-<lb />
tution, but were unsuccessful.<lb />
Jones said that his administration<lb />
decided to make this a platform<lb />
goal of theirs and that they were<lb />
determined to accomplish it.<lb />
To make initial changes to<lb />
the constitution, a 20 percent<lb />
vote was needed, but the largest<lb />
percentage of votes obtained was<lb />
about 16 percent.<lb />
The process of reconstruct-<lb />
ing the constitution began this<lb />
summer during the summer<lb />
senate that consisted of mainly the<lb />
executive board. The executive<lb />
board includes the president, vice<lb />
president, secretary and treasurer.<lb />
The student involvement for<lb />
the changes basically consisted<lb />
of these executive members and<lb />
grew as the year progressed.<lb />
Some of the key players in<lb />
the process were M. Cole Jones,<lb />
Dustin Pittman, Ben Wyche,<lb />
Terry Gore, Ping Li, Charles<lb />
Owens, Michaelino Antahades,<lb />
Ryan Wiggins, Abey Dessie, Nadia<lb />
Payne and Terry Holloman.<lb />
The previous rules in the con-<lb />
stitution didn't leave much room<lb />
for SGA to treat all organizations<lb />
equally as far as funding and<lb />
other issues are concerned.<lb />
Ben Wyche, speaker of the<lb />
senate, said that he got the<lb />
chance to look over the con-<lb />
stitution about two years ago<lb />
and after noticing injustices<lb />
that the document included<lb />
felt it was time for a change.<lb />
Wyche said, "There were<lb />
several issues that were in con-<lb />
s tradiction to supreme ruling and<lb />
1 state legislation, mainly how we<lb />
c funded organizations that were of<lb />
rs religious or political orientation<lb />
The only revisions made to<lb />
the document over the school's<lb />
S history were minor changes made<lb />
when men began to enroll at the<lb />
school. The past constitution<lb />
wasn't a direct reflection of all<lb />
the students, according to Jones.<lb />
Dr. Gary Moore, vice chancel-<lb />
lor of student life, and Mary Lu<lb />
Anta also played a big role in giving<lb />
SGA the permission and fund-<lb />
ing to get the revisions started.<lb />
The SGA was able to make<lb />
some drastic changes that will<lb />
ensure equality and impact all<lb />
students positively.<lb />
Altering the language of the<lb />
constitution was an important<lb />
change that will ensure that the<lb />
average college student will be<lb />
able to understand it.<lb />

Students are encouraged to attend the second open discussion.<lb />
Fifth Street may soon<lb />
become MLK, Jr. Street<lb />
Open discussion on<lb />
street renaming was held<lb />
Monday<lb />
CLAIRE MURPHY<lb />
ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR<lb />
An open discussion on<lb />
renaming the entirety of Fifth<lb />
Street after Dr. Martin Luther<lb />
King, Jr. was held in Willis audi-<lb />
torium Monday. The topic has<lb />
been a sensitive one for a long<lb />
time, and many citizens are<lb />
happy that something is finally<lb />
being done.<lb />
The evening opened with a<lb />
brief history on the street's name<lb />
based on city record. On April 11,<lb />
1989, a letter was sent requesting<lb />
Memorial Drive be renamed after<lb />
MLK. It, of course, remained<lb />
named for war veterans.<lb />
Many other roads were con-<lb />
sidered, and on Oct. 12, 1990,<lb />
zoning commissions held a vote<lb />
for the change of West Fifth<lb />
Street. January 1999 was the date<lb />
of the official name change that<lb />
still exists now.<lb />
The current debate is having<lb />
all of Fifth Street named after<lb />
Dr. King instead of just half. To<lb />
most Greenville natives, keep-<lb />
ing half is just degrading and<lb />
offensive. Sure, there is history-<lb />
people carry with them from<lb />
Fifth Street and it will be a pain<lb />
for those residents to change<lb />
addresses, but there is more his-<lb />
tory in this town of diversity and<lb />
segregation that affects people of<lb />
all races on every street in town.<lb />
This is the history that needs to<lb />
be symbolized by our admira-<lb />
tion for Dr. King for the younger<lb />
generations, students and aging<lb />
natives alike.<lb />
Dr. Derek H. Alderman, asso-<lb />
ciate professor of geography, is a<lb />
very active participant in Martin<lb />
Luther King, Jr. research. He has<lb />

'Give to the Troops' supplies peace of mind<lb />
Donations for troops are welcomed by the Gamma Beta Chi Society.<lb />
Gamma Beta Chi steps<lb />
up to assist deployed<lb />
soldiers<lb />
CLAYTON BAUMAN<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The Gamma Beta Chi Society<lb />
has been actively involved in a<lb />
program geared toward sending<lb />
care packages to troops deployed<lb />
overseas in places such as Iraq<lb />
and Afghanistan.<lb />
The society adopts different<lb />
organizations. This semester,<lb />
"Give to the Troops" was the<lb />
program of choice.<lb />
The society is accepting a<lb />
fi wide range of items to be sent<lb />
9 overseas and anyone is welcome<lb />
p and encouraged to donate.<lb />
I "A big part of what we're<lb />
S trying to do is to provide oppor-<lb />
tunities that 'Give to the Troops'<lb />
can't meet. For example, they'll<lb />
make a request of what they<lb />
would like Give to the Troops to<lb />
send to them in their care pack-<lb />
ages said Debranetta Gethers,<lb />
junior and president of Gamma<lb />
Beta Phi.<lb />
"And sometimes troops<lb />
request items that they don't<lb />
have in stock or they haven't<lb />
had donate and 'Give to the<lb />
Troops' can't financially go out<lb />
and purchase for them, so we<lb />
want to be there to meet that<lb />
need as well<lb />
Give to the Troops' is a<lb />
nation-wide organization. There<lb />
is one in each state and it just<lb />
so happens that 'Give to the<lb />
Troops' in North Carolina is in<lb />
Greenville said Stacey Jones,<lb />
service chairperson for Gamma<lb />
Beta Phi.<lb />
"They take donations and<lb />
they package them up and send<lb />
them overseas to places like Iraq<lb />
and Afghanistan and anywhere<lb />
else we have troops said Brandon<lb />
Brake, junior and vice president.<lb />
The society also sends out vol-<lb />
unteers to work at the "Give to the<lb />
Troops" location in Greenville.<lb />
Three to four volunteers go every<lb />
day to the center when it is open,<lb />
and take care of packaging.<lb />
"We pack enough for eight<lb />
to 12 people in the unit to hand<lb />
out Jones said.<lb />
"We put cards in there,<lb />
we put food in there, little<lb />
goodies, books, things of that<lb />
nature along with daily basic<lb />
things<lb />
The program started at the<lb />
beginning of February.<lb />
In the past Gamma Beta Chi<lb />
has worked with the Ronald<lb />
McDonald House, as well as col-<lb />
lected money for children who<lb />
are affected with aids.<lb />
"It's gone pretty well, but<lb />
they still need more Brake said<lb />
regarding the organization's cur-<lb />
rent success.<lb />
"I think a lot of people will<lb />
be interested in it, they just don't<lb />
know about it, so we just want to<lb />
get that name out there and get<lb />
them out<lb />
Gamma Beta Chi is currently<lb />
putting together plans to accept<lb />
items in Wright Plaza, as well as<lb />
collaborate with the society at<lb />
Pitt Community College. There<lb />
is no tentative date set yet.<lb />
The society learned about the<lb />
"Give to the Troops" program<lb />
through the advising center.<lb />
Gamma Beta Chi is a national<lb />
honor and service organization.<lb />
Potential members must hold<lb />
a 3.25 GPA or be in the top IS<lb />
percent of their class.<lb />
For those interested in donat-<lb />
ing, "Give to the Troops" is<lb />
located at 3109 Landmark Street<lb />
across from Wal-Mart.<lb />

Taking new steps toward<lb />
reducing smoking<lb />
Student Union lays down the cards<lb />
Grant helps initiate<lb />
programs to stop<lb />
smoking<lb />
KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The N.C. Health and Well-<lb />
ness Trust Fund (HWTF) awarded<lb />
ECU $80,000 Feb. 9 to decrease<lb />
the number of smokers between<lb />
the ages of 18 and 24.<lb />
Faculty members involved<lb />
in implementing programs<lb />
that will help reduce college-<lb />
aged smokers include Georgia<lb />
Childs, Dr. David White, Karen<lb />
Warren and Dr. Craig Becker.<lb />
White and Warren will<lb />
be the principle investigators<lb />
examining how smoking can be<lb />
reduced, and Becker will act as<lb />
the lead evaluator who will see<lb />
that the programs are going as<lb />
planned and are fulfilling the<lb />
objectives they have to reduce<lb />
the number of college smokers.<lb />
The expertise of Family Medi-<lb />
cine and Pediatrics will provide<lb />
assistance with these programs.<lb />
Also involved in this proj-<lb />
ect are the Department of<lb />
Health Education and Promo-<lb />
tion and the Healthy Pirates.<lb />
The Healthy Pirates will deliver<lb />
smoking cessation classes. With<lb />
the help of several groups, the<lb />
Healthy Pirates will have a media<lb />
campaign to promote students<lb />
not to start smoking or to stop.<lb />
The grant will allow the<lb />
individuals involved in this<lb />
grant to start mandatory<lb />
tobacco prevention education<lb />
in the required Health 1000<lb />
courses and develop and enforce<lb />
a campus smoking policy.<lb />
"We are very excited for the<lb />
opportunity to enhance the<lb />
health and well-being of our<lb />
students said Childs.<lb />
The grant will last until<lb />
December 2007, but efforts to<lb />
reduce smoking and prevention<lb />
will continue.<lb />
"The modules for the Health<lb />
1000 classes will still be in place<lb />
when the grant money runs out<lb />
Childs said<lb />
According to the Center<lb />
for Disease Control, the age<lb />
group of 18-24-year-olds is<lb />
the only age group that has<lb />
nationally rising smoking<lb />
rates instead of falling ones.<lb />
Childs said that she feels that<lb />
social habits and stress may cause<lb />
the large number of smokers seen<lb />
within this age group.<lb />
"A majority of 18-24-year-<lb />
olds are in college or may have<lb />
stressful jobs. They may start<lb />
smoking as a means of relieving<lb />
stress Childs said.<lb />
"Smoking may be a social<lb />
thing where they smoke at parties,<lb />
in the club or outside on campus<lb />
for a chance to meet people<lb />
The grant will also allow<lb />
them a chance to create an area<lb />
where smokers can go to smoke<lb />
without affecting the air and<lb />
breathing of non-smokers.<lb />
"There are often people stand-<lb />
ing outside near the entrances<lb />
of buildings smoking. This<lb />
affects others who have to travel<lb />
through the smoke to get in the<lb />
buildings Childs said.<lb />
Environmentally, smoking<lb />
Is a problem at ECU mainly<lb />
because of students and staff<lb />
throwing their cigarette butts on<lb />
the ground.<lb />
ECU's grant is one of the first<lb />
state funded grants to promote<lb />
prevention and reduction of<lb />
tobacco use among college-aged<lb />
youth.<lb />
Over the past two years,<lb />
$1.6 million was awarded to 20<lb />
universities, community col-<lb />
leges, health departments and<lb />
organizations in North Carolina<lb />
by HWTF.<lb />
Students who would like<lb />
to quit now have the option of<lb />

New Firefighters<lb />
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - More<lb />
people who have already had a career<lb />
are becoming full-time firefighters, fire<lb />
officials say.<lb />
The Fayetteville Fire Department<lb />
does not keep statistics about how<lb />
many people are switching careers<lb />
or about what jobs they've had, but<lb />
officials say, since Sept. 11,2001, the<lb />
trend is apparent.<lb />
Some were soldiers and airmen,<lb />
others stay-at-home moms and<lb />
contractors. Many made more money<lb />
than they do as firefighters, but it's not<lb />
about the size of the paycheck.<lb />
For some, it's about the hours.<lb />
Fayetteville firefighters work 10 shifts<lb />
a month at 24 hours per shift, leaving<lb />
about 20 free days for family, hobbies<lb />
or even another job.<lb />
For others, Ifs about the rush of adrenaline<lb />
when entering a burning building.<lb />
Mostly, they want to feel as if they've<lb />
made Fayetteville a better place to live.<lb />
Almost half of these current trainees<lb />
had other careers before becoming<lb />
firefighters.<lb />
The exercise is designed to simulate<lb />
the type of smoky, fiery building the<lb />
recruits could see as firefighters.<lb />

Teen Smoking<lb />
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - More teenagers<lb />
in the nation's top-producing tobacco<lb />
state are avoiding cigarettes,<lb />
chew and other leaf products that<lb />
once dominated North Carolina's<lb />
economic engine, according to a<lb />
survey released Tuesday.<lb />
About 25 percent fewer high school<lb />
students and 40 percent fewer<lb />
middle-schoolers reported smoking<lb />
between 2003 and 2005, according<lb />
to the biennial Youth Tobacco Survey.<lb />
The drop represents 27,000 fewer<lb />
teens that reported smoking during<lb />
the two-year period.<lb />
The kids from the ground up really<lb />
do precipitate the buzz that it's no<lb />
longer cool to smoke, and because<lb />
of that, their parents jump on said<lb />
Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue, chairwoman of<lb />
the N.C. Health and Wellness Trust<lb />
Fund. The fund uses money from<lb />
the state's master settlement with<lb />
tobacco companies to improve the<lb />
health of North Carolinians.<lb />
National<lb />
Major Bush ally visits Washington<lb />
WASHINGTON (AP) - Italian Prime<lb />
Minister Silvio Berlusconi, facing<lb />
a tough election to stay in power,<lb />
got a boost Tuesday from his ally<lb />
President Bush, who effusively<lb />
praised Berlusconi as a strong<lb />
leader who has "brought stability to<lb />
the Italian government<lb />
Berlusconi had breakfast with Bush,<lb />
followed by formal talks.<lb />
"He's a man of his word Bush said<lb />
of Berlusconi as they sat side by side<lb />
in the Oval Office.<lb />
"Obviously, it's important for an<lb />
American president to be able to<lb />
work with somebody in a consistent<lb />
manner and I appreciate the stability<lb />
the prime minister has brought to our<lb />
close ally and friend<lb />
Asked whether the friendly U.S<lb />
Italian relations would continue if<lb />
Berlusconi's opponent won, Bush<lb />
hastened to say that he was keeping<lb />
his distance from Italian politics.<lb />
Italy initially was among the most<lb />
important U.S. allies in the Iraq war,<lb />
having provided 3,000 troops to the<lb />
effort in 2003 after U.Sled invaders<lb />
had brought down President Saddam<lb />
Hussein's government. Italy now has<lb />
2,600 troops in country and is in the<lb />
process of removing them all by the<lb />
end of the year.<lb />
The Italian economy is foundering<lb />
MLK<lb />
from page A1<lb />
many works published on this<lb />
subject and is very informed on<lb />
all aspects of street naming. He<lb />
has given many talks on naming<lb />
streets after MLK, but this was his<lb />
first time speaking about it to his<lb />
own town.<lb />
The purpose of his speech<lb />
was to show how prevalent street<lb />
naming is and how culturally<lb />
important as well.<lb />
"There are over 730 U.S.<lb />
cities named after King, and this<lb />
number is very conservative said<lb />
Dr. Alderman.<lb />
There have been recorded<lb />
marches and much controversy<lb />
over the years throughout the<lb />
country on this topic. On average,<lb />
19 streets per year are named after<lb />
him since his assassination. There<lb />
is even a side street in Italy named<lb />
after the honorable Dr. King<lb />
making it even more shameful, in<lb />
some opinions, to not give a man<lb />
who inspired an entire nation an<lb />
entire road in his memory.<lb />
There was also a lot of help<lb />
and guidelines provided by<lb />
VISIONS here in Greenville at the<lb />
discussion. They are a non-profit<lb />
education organization in close<lb />
connection with ECU. They are<lb />
mainly based on cultural, racial<lb />
and sexual equality.<lb />
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.<lb />
was about integration and unity.<lb />
It was strongly implied at the dis-<lb />
cussion that naming half of the<lb />
street after him (that half being<lb />
on what is classified as the "poor"<lb />
side) symbolizes diversity and seg-<lb />
regation on its own. The citizens<lb />
here are looking for a metaphori-<lb />
cal bridge to connect all com-<lb />
munities and ethnicities and rid<lb />
them of the lingering prejudices.<lb />
All are welcome to attend<lb />
the next discussion March 27<lb />
at 7 p.m. at the Eppes Recre-<lb />
ation Center at 400 Nash St.<lb />
here in Greenville. Student<lb />
voices are greatly appreciated.<lb />

SGA<lb />
from page A1<lb />
Changes were also made to<lb />
provide the constitution with<lb />
more concrete rules to ensure that<lb />
SGA will function more smoothly<lb />
in their business decisions.<lb />
The administration decided<lb />
to change the title of senate to<lb />
congress and representatives<lb />
to day senators. Clearer job<lb />
descriptions were created for the<lb />
executive board members as well.<lb />
Other technical things were<lb />
revised such as an increase in the<lb />
executive board's salary, the com-<lb />
bining of all the branches, the<lb />
structure of the body of articles,<lb />
the impeachment process, checks<lb />
and balances along with many<lb />
other things.<lb />
One of the main goals of the<lb />
new constitution is to serve the<lb />
students in the best way pos-<lb />
sible.<lb />
Jones said that he would like<lb />
the student body to know that<lb />
every student is a member of<lb />
SGA under the new constitution<lb />
and everyone is free to express<lb />
concerns and opinions.<lb />
Ryan Wiggins, screening and<lb />
appointment chair who became<lb />
active in the changes later in<lb />
the semester, said that recently<lb />
the administration have been<lb />
working well over 50 hours a<lb />
week making changes iq the<lb />
document.<lb />
In order to approve the consti-<lb />
tution, three reading must occur<lb />
and ratification of the revised<lb />
document. The third reading<lb />
of the constitution occurred on<lb />
February 20.<lb />
Approval from Dr. Moore<lb />
and Corey King, assistant vice<lb />
chancellor of student experi-<lb />
ences, are the final steps in this<lb />
historic event for SGA and the<lb />
university.<lb />
Once the constitution is<lb />
approved, no other major changes<lb />
will be able to take place until 2010.<lb />
The constitution will be avail-<lb />
able for the students to view via<lb />
the Internet on the SGA Web site,<lb />
according to Wiggins.<lb />
This is one of the many<lb />
achievements the SGA adminis-<lb />
tration has been able to accom-<lb />
plish. This administration has<lb />
been able to help many orga-<lb />
nizations, the community and<lb />
have more things in store for<lb />
this year.<lb />
Jones said, "We want students<lb />
to know that this administration<lb />
is ran by the students and for the<lb />
students<lb />

Marketing for CIAA<lb />
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - It may seem<lb />
incongruous that for 14 years, the<lb />
CIAA basketball tournament and its<lb />
related events have been overseen<lb />
by a management company founded<lb />
by a former NASCAR marketer in the<lb />

historically black colleges and<lb />
universities isnt as odd as it might seem.<lb />

Prosecutors snow execution<lb />
Saddam signed order they say<lb />
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Prosecutors<lb />
presented documents Tuesday<lb />
they said show Saddam Hussein<lb />
approved executions of more than<lb />
140 Shiites in the 1980s, the most<lb />
direct evidence yet against the former<lb />
Iraqi leader in his four-month trial.<lb />
Among those sentenced to hang was<lb />
an 11-year-old boy.<lb />
The most significant document<lb />
featured a signature said to be<lb />
Saddam's on a court list of people to<lb />
be executed, though it was not clear he<lb />
was aware of their ages. The list on that<lb />
particular document only had names.<lb />
About 50 of those sentenced died<lb />
during interrogation before they<lb />
could go to the gallows. One man, his<lb />
brother and two sons were executed<lb />
by mistake, and Saddam allegedly<lb />
ordered them declared "martyrs" to<lb />
cover up the error.<lb />
When it was discovered that the 11-<lb />
year-old and nine other juveniles were<lb />
not executed but were still in prison<lb />
years later, they were ordered killed<lb />
and their bodies burled in secret;<lb />
an order approved with a signature<lb />
the prosecution said was that of the<lb />
intelligence agency chief at the time,<lb />
Barzan Ibrahim, who is Saddam's half<lb />
brother and a co-defendant in the trial.<lb />
Deadly Bird Flu<lb />
BERLIN (AP) - The deadly strain of bird<lb />
flu has been found in a cat in Germany,<lb />
officials said Tuesday; the first time the<lb />
virus has been identified in an animal<lb />
other than a bird in central Europe.<lb />
Health officials urged cat owners to<lb />
keep pets indoors after the dead cat<lb />
was discovered over the weekend<lb />
on the Baltic Sea island of Ruegen,<lb />
where most of the more than 100 wild<lb />
birds infected by the H5N1 strain have<lb />
been found.<lb />
The disease could continue its<lb />
spread in poultry stocks in Europe<lb />
and beyond.<lb />
The risk now is high for everybody<lb />
said Bernard Vallat, director of the<lb />
Paris-based World Organization for<lb />
Animal Health, which hosted the<lb />
two-day meeting of experts from 50<lb />
countries.<lb />
Authorities in Sweden and Hungary<lb />
also said they were conducting<lb />
further tests to confirm whether wild<lb />
birds that had tested positive for a<lb />
form of bird flu were infected with the<lb />
H5N1 strain.<lb />
Slovenia, as well as the southern<lb />
German state of Bavaria, both registered<lb />
new cases of H5N1 in wild fowl.<lb />

(CareerBullder.com) It's<lb />
one of the simplest things you<lb />
can do. Your mother told you<lb />
to always say it. By expressing<lb />
it - or not - you can change a<lb />
person's mood and percep-<lb />
tion of you in an instant. Who<lb />
knew two words could be so<lb />
powerful?<lb />
Writing a thank-you letter<lb />
after an interview doesn't just<lb />
showcase a candidate's manners<lb />
- it can also make or break their<lb />
chances of landing a job. Nearly<lb />
15 percent of hiring managers<lb />
say they would not hire someone<lb />
who failed to send a thank-you<lb />
letter after the interview. Thirty-<lb />
two percent say they would<lb />
still consider the candidate, but<lb />
would think less of him or her,<lb />
according to CareerBuilder.com's<lb />
recent "How to Get in the Front<lb />
Door" survey.<lb />
Although most hiring<lb />
managers expect to receive a<lb />
thank-you note, format prefer-<lb />
ences differ. One-in-four hiring<lb />
managers prefer to receive a<lb />
thank-you note in e-mail form<lb />
only; 19 percent want the e-<lb />
mail followed up with a hard<lb />
copy; 21 percent want a typed<lb />
hard copy only and 23 percent<lb />
prefer just a handwritten note.<lb />
No matter which format<lb />
you choose, it's crucial to act<lb />
quickly when sending a thank-<lb />
you letter to your interviewer.<lb />
Twenty-six percent of hiring<lb />
managers expect to have the<lb />
letter in-hand two days after<lb />
the interview, and 36 percent<lb />
expect to have it within three<lb />
to five days. Sending the letter<lb />
quickly reinforces your enthusiasm<lb />
for the job, and helps keep you<lb />
top-of-mind for the interviewer.<lb />
Survey Methodology The<lb />
CareerBuilder.com survey, "How<lb />
to Get in the Front Door was<lb />
conducted from May 17 to May<lb />
27, 2005. Methodology used to<lb />
collect survey responses totaling<lb />
more than 650 hiring managers<lb />
for this study involved selecting<lb />
a random sample of comScore<lb />
Networks panel members.<lb />
These Web Panel members were<lb />
approached via an e-mail invita-<lb />
tion, which asked them to par-<lb />
ticipate in a short online survey.<lb />
The results of this survey are<lb />
statistically accurate to within<lb />
3.84 percentage points (19 times<lb />
out of 20).<lb />
?<lb />
Here are some<lb />
tips to make the<lb />
most of your<lb />
thank-you letter:<lb />
Stick to three paragraphs.<lb />
In the first paragraph, thank the<lb />
Interviewer (or the opportunity.<lb />
Use the second to sell yourself<lb />
by reminding the hiring manager<lb />
of your qualifications. In the third<lb />
paragraph, reiterate your Interest<lb />
In the position.<lb />
Fill In the blanks.<lb />
Thank-you notes are a great<lb />
way to add In key Information<lb />
you forgot In the Interview, clarify<lb />
any points or try to ease any<lb />
reservations the Interviewer might<lb />
have expressed.<lb />
Proofread carefully.<lb />
Double-check to be sure your<lb />
note Is free from typos and<lb />
grammatical errors. Don't rely<lb />
solely on your spell-checker.<lb />
Be specific.<lb />
Don't send out a generic<lb />
correspondence. Instead, tailor<lb />
your note to the specific )ob<lb />
and the relationship you have<lb />
established with the hiring<lb />
manager.<lb />

Our View<lb />
Variety is the<lb />
spice of life<lb />
Last night my roommate boiled two hot<lb />
dogs for dinner. Last week she made a<lb />
bologna-and-mayonnaise sandwich with<lb />
a side of cottage cheese for lunch.<lb />
Sometimes she mixes rice, a chicken<lb />
breast and a can of French onion soup all<lb />
together in a casserole dish and bakes it<lb />
for hours, which makes the whole house<lb />
smell. She doesn't like most vegetables,<lb />
and she thinks the food I eat is just as weird.<lb />
Eating habits and food preferences vary<lb />
widely from person to person, just like<lb />
everything else. No one person's habits<lb />
or preferences are better than another's,<lb />
as long as they're healthy.<lb />
Yet we've all judged others' different<lb />
preferences, often in negative ways. Who<lb />
hasn't seen someone eating a dish and<lb />
said "ew, gross at least once?<lb />
What a person chooses to eat is influ-<lb />
enced by a number of factors, but it is a<lb />
personal choice that really only affects<lb />
that person, just like clothing and hair-<lb />
style choices, religious affiliation and<lb />
sexual orientation.<lb />
So why are we so judgmental?<lb />
I don't have to like my roommate's food,<lb />
but I don't have to criticize it either.<lb />
Personal choices are just that, personal.<lb />
To assume that some know better than<lb />
others what to eat, how to dress, where to<lb />
worship or what to feel, even on the small-<lb />
est scale, limits our ability to embrace<lb />
diversity.<lb />
Everyone is different, and those differ-<lb />
ences should be used to foster creativity,<lb />
not conflict. We here at TEC encourage dif-<lb />
ferences and debate, in food and in life.<lb />
Pirate Rant<lb />

I'm against drugs for all the wrong reasons<lb />
Williams and Doherty<lb />
need to kick the habit.<lb />
for my sake<lb />
GARY MCCABE<lb />
BITTER BOULEVARD<lb />
Drugs are ruining my life.<lb />
Now before you begin assem-<lb />
bling intervention groups across<lb />
campus for me, let me state that<lb />
I don't do drugs. 1 can't afford<lb />
them. And technically, I don't<lb />
have a life. That's beside the<lb />
point, though. Drugs are ruin-<lb />
ing my life, albeit indirectly.<lb />
Let me give you an abbreviated<lb />
list of my heroes in life - John<lb />
Belushi, Brad Nowell of Sublime,<lb />
Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Bruce, Elvis<lb />
Presley, Keith Moon, Dana Plato<lb />
and Marvin Gaye. What do all of<lb />
these people have in common?<lb />
They all died because of drugs.<lb />
Well, except for Marvin Gaye. He<lb />
died because his dad was a jerk.<lb />
But I'm not trying to make<lb />
some noble statement about the<lb />
dangers of drug use. I'm saying<lb />
that these people are all selfish<lb />
and have deprived me of years<lb />
of entertainment because all the<lb />
money in the world wasn't enough<lb />
to keep them happy.<lb />
If Belushi had thought better<lb />
of shooting himself up with<lb />
a combination of heroin and<lb />
cocaine, maybe Blues Brothers<lb />
2000 would have been good. Or<lb />
if Keith Moon hadn't overdosed,<lb />
maybe he could have convinced<lb />
Pete Townshend that giving his<lb />
credit card number to a child<lb />
pornography site wasn't the best<lb />
way to do research for a book.<lb />
Just think how much better<lb />
the world would be if these people<lb />
had lived. Think of all the Nirvana<lb />
records, River Phoenix movies<lb />
and "Diff'rent Strokes" reunions<lb />
we've missed out on. That's why<lb />
I'm writing this article. I'm writ-<lb />
ing this article because two of my<lb />
favorite people at the moment are<lb />
on the verge of ruining my day and<lb />
1 don't want that to happen.<lb />
If he hasn't already, Ricky Wil-<lb />
liams is ruining the chances of my<lb />
beloved Miami Dolphins winning<lb />
a Super Bowl in the near future. 1<lb />
may have mentioned in a previous<lb />
piece, but let me-reiterate that I'm<lb />
a die-hard Dolfan. So when the<lb />
enigmatic Williams was traded to<lb />
Dolphins dirt-cheap and ended<lb />
up leading the league in rushing<lb />
in his first year with the team, I<lb />
was happier than Pete Townshend<lb />
when the police believed that he<lb />
was "doing research<lb />
The WilliamsDolfans love<lb />
affair was short-lived, though.<lb />
Just days prior to training camp<lb />
for what would have been his<lb />
third season in Miami, Williams<lb />
left the team - and then left the<lb />
country - because he wanted to<lb />
smoke marijuana freely. The ensu-<lb />
ing season for the Williams-less<lb />
Dolphins was awful. And when 1<lb />
say awful, I mean awful like John<lb />
Travolta's hit song "Let Her In<lb />
Seriously - download it and see<lb />
what I mean.<lb />
So after sitting out one season,<lb />
Williams changed his mind.<lb />
Maybe he missed the game. Maybe<lb />
it had something to do with the<lb />
$8.6 million he owed the Dolphins<lb />
for breach of contract. Either way,<lb />
he wanted back in and Miami's<lb />
new coach Nick Saban facilitated<lb />
it. I was apprehensive at first, but<lb />
he won me back by playing his<lb />
heart out for the remainder of the<lb />
season following his four-week<lb />
suspension for three failed drug<lb />
tests.<lb />
The Dolphins finished strong<lb />
and were projected to have a great<lb />
2006-07 season. Bringing back<lb />
Williams was a great move and<lb />
whether he was traded during<lb />
the off season or retained for a<lb />
strong backfield next season, the<lb />
Dolphins were better of f unless<lb />
he failed another drug test.<lb />
But he's a changed man,<lb />
right? That's impossible. It would<lb />
never of course, it happened!<lb />
Now Williams faces a one year<lb />
suspension from the NFL. It<lb />
wasn't a new man - just the<lb />
same crap. This time it killed any<lb />
shot Miami has at a Super Bowl.<lb />
Williams' discretions are noth-<lb />
ing compared to Pete Doherty's<lb />
though. Pete Doherty isn't exactly<lb />
a big star in the United States<lb />
- usually he's just referred to as<lb />
Kate Moss's crack-addicted ex-<lb />
boyfriend. That might even be<lb />
a fair assessment of Doherty if it<lb />
wasn't for the teensy-weensy fact<lb />
that he co-founded the greatest<lb />
band since Nirvana. Of course,<lb />
most Americans were too busy<lb />
listening to Nelly to notice.<lb />
I discovered the Libertines a<lb />
bit late. By the time I heard their<lb />
debut album Up the Bracket, origi-<lb />
nally released in October of 2002,<lb />
Doherty had already been kicked<lb />
out of the band three times, once<lb />
for burglarizing his band mate Carl<lb />
Barat's house in a crack-induced<lb />
haze. It was only August 2004<lb />
when I heard Up the Bracket, but<lb />
already the Libertines were no<lb />
more and Doherty had formed a<lb />
new band, Babyshambles.<lb />
It's a shame about Doherty<lb />
because it's obvious that as a<lb />
songwriter and as musician, he's<lb />
an absolute genius. His lyricism<lb />
is on par with some of the best<lb />
-Costello, Lennon, Cobain - but<lb />
his well-documented drug addic-<lb />
tion will be the death of him.<lb />
Since Oct. 2, 2005, Doherty has<lb />
been arrested at least a half dozen<lb />
times for possession of "class-A"<lb />
drugs. On Jan. 25 alone, he was<lb />
arrested three times, although<lb />
to be fair, one of the arrests was<lb />
for assaulting a fan at a recent<lb />
Babyshambles show.<lb />
On Feb. 8 of this year, some-<lb />
how Doherty managed to skip<lb />
out on jail time for all of the<lb />
arrests and instead was handed<lb />
a 12-month community order,<lb />
which stated that Doherty must<lb />
stay clean for a year and should he<lb />
fail a mandatory drug test in that<lb />
period, he could face the jail time<lb />
he had just avoided, somewhere in<lb />
the range of five to seven years.<lb />
Happily, Doherty vowed to<lb />
kick the habit as he'd just been<lb />
handed a gift from God. He<lb />
cleaned himself up, showed up to<lb />
his concerts on time and things<lb />
looked good. You'd think he'd<lb />
finally change his ways, right?<lb />
Knowing the consequences, he'd<lb />
never of course, he did! He got<lb />
picked up on suspicion of stealing<lb />
a car and possession of "class-A"<lb />
drugs last Tuesday. By the time he<lb />
gets out of prison, I'll have moved<lb />
on from Brit Rock. Hell, I could be<lb />
past this phase in a month.<lb />
So because of these selfish<lb />
millionaires, one which could<lb />
share his bed again with Kate<lb />
Moss should he ever clean him-<lb />
self up, I'm losing out. I'm not<lb />
the happiest of people. I don't<lb />
always find a reason to get out<lb />
of bed in the morning. I don't<lb />
care if people do drugs. That's<lb />
their own choice, but the minute<lb />
it affect me like it has in these<lb />
two cases, I get angry. I want a<lb />
Super Bowl championship. I want<lb />
another Babyshambles record.<lb />
What are these guys thinking?<lb />
Do they even consider how their<lb />
actions are going to affect me?<lb />
In My Opinion<lb />
(KRT) Wednesday marks<lb />
the 45th anniversary of the<lb />
Peace Corps. And as a recently<lb />
returning Peace Corps volunteer,<lb />
I believe we need more organiza-<lb />
tions like this one.<lb />
Six months ago, I was board-<lb />
ing a plane in Turkmenistan,<lb />
heading home to the United<lb />
States. 1 had finished two years of<lb />
work as a Peace Corps volunteer<lb />
in a tiny village in an unknown<lb />
corner of the world. I remem-<lb />
bered the tear-streaked faces of<lb />
my local friends, the little library<lb />
we had built and filled with Shel<lb />
Silverstein and Judy Blume and<lb />
the essays my students had writ-<lb />
ten about Rosa Parks and global<lb />
warming.<lb />
In the years since its creation<lb />
in 1961, Peace Corps volunteers<lb />
have lived all over the world,<lb />
upholding the three goals of<lb />
the organization: To teach other<lb />
countries about America and<lb />
its customs, to teach Americans<lb />
about other countries and their<lb />
customs, and to assist in develop-<lb />
ing infrastructure in countries<lb />
that request it.<lb />
Often with few resources<lb />
and just a few weeks of training<lb />
in local languages and culture,<lb />
Peace Corps volunteers have<lb />
taught English, established nurs-<lb />
eries and fisheries, supported<lb />
local groups and, most impor-<lb />
tantly, built lasting relationships<lb />
with host country nationals. Vol-<lb />
unteers continue this important<lb />
work today and are establishing<lb />
peace and friendship in more<lb />
than 70 countries.<lb />
President Kennedy created<lb />
the United States Peace Corps<lb />
- the first organization of its<lb />
kind - after he addressed a group<lb />
of students at the University of<lb />
Michigan. The students pleaded<lb />
for an opportunity to serve their<lb />
country peacefully and to give<lb />
back to the global community.<lb />
Kennedy was moved by their<lb />
determination and hope.<lb />
Many of us head off to our<lb />
countries, determined to help<lb />
people and to transmit our<lb />
knowledge to those less fortu-<lb />
nate. What inevitably results is<lb />
the humbling realization that we<lb />
don't have all the answers, and<lb />
that paying attention to what our<lb />
hosts tell us about their needs,<lb />
culture and ideas is the real key<lb />
to building cooperative relation-<lb />
ships. We learn as much from<lb />
them as they do from us.<lb />
Global opinion of the United<lb />
States is at an all-time low, thanks<lb />
to the Bush administration's uni-<lb />
lateralist approach to U.S. foreign<lb />
policy. Europe is unsupportive,<lb />
the Middle East is destabilized<lb />
and quagmires engulf Iraq and<lb />
Afghanistan. Most nations of the<lb />
world do not see us as a force for<lb />
peace, and it is because we do not<lb />
give them the chance to.<lb />
Fortunately, when people<lb />
abroad see Peace Corps volun-<lb />
teers helping to rebuild their<lb />
communities and their infra-<lb />
structure, it creates goodwill<lb />
between countries and their<lb />
people.<lb />
Peace Corps volunteers are far<lb />
less threatening than uniformed<lb />
Americans with guns. The United<lb />
States should Increase the size<lb />
and funding of the Peace Corps.<lb />
Instead of shipping out more<lb />
troops around the world, we<lb />
should send more Peace Corps<lb />
volunteers. They may be the best<lb />
antidote to terrorism and hatred.<lb />
1 want a Rosa Parks Road, a Pope John Paul Lane and<lb />
a Mother Teresa Boulevard. Can we work those into<lb />
a Greenville map too?<lb />
The magazine selection at the SRC is horrible. I pay<lb />
enough money to the school to help support SRC<lb />
services. I think I deserve something other than<lb />
Time and Better Homes and Gardens to read!<lb />
My friend is having a hard time with life lately and<lb />
wants Xanax to make her feel mellowed out, but<lb />
what she really needs is Prozac so she'll stop moping<lb />
around and get on with life already.<lb />
If ECU wants to gain ranks in the academic world<lb />
so much, why don't they start by offering a 24-hour<lb />
campus library?<lb />
My roommate says that my other roommate and I<lb />
are heartless because we don't coddle her dog the<lb />
way she does. I'm sorry, but last time I checked she<lb />
was not our dog. She should seriously just be glad<lb />
we let it loose and that we're nice to it at all.<lb />
So normally I'm a huge fan of the cold weather and<lb />
snow, but let me tell you - with gas heating, I'm<lb />
i dying for it to be hot again. I just can't take any<lb />
! more high electric bills!<lb />
Look, if you are writing an e-mail to me about<lb />
class, first tell me what freaking class you are talk-<lb />
ing about. Just saying "I missed class on Tuesday.<lb />
What's due?" does not tell me who you are or what<lb />
class you're from!<lb />
The food at West End was so good on Oscar Night.<lb />
Why can't they cook like that all the time?<lb />
To the idiots who insist on playing 'music' as loud<lb />
as possible from their cars driving up and down<lb />
Campus Hill each day, grow up. Nobody wants to<lb />
hear your crappy music andor50 sound system you<lb />
bought at Wal-Mart. What you're doing is commonly<lb />
referred to as noise pollution. I hope you go deaf.<lb />
Busch Gardens will always trump Disney World, no<lb />
matter how cool Space Mountain is.<lb />
Heck, why stop at renaming Fifth Street. Why not<lb />
rename the whole school MLK and change our<lb />
mascot to the soul birds?<lb />
I'm sorry, but if you're dumb enough to show the<lb />
world on Facebook or MySpace you did something<lb />
illegal, you shouldn't complain when the police<lb />
show up at your door because you posted a picture of<lb />
you underage with a beer in your hand. Darwinism<lb />
comes into effect somewhere, and better to learn it<lb />
in college than in the real world.<lb />
To the person who wrote the rant about dead bodies<lb />
still in the streets of New Orleans, please write<lb />
another rant with the Web address where I can read<lb />
that article. I don't expect a response, but if it is<lb />
actually out there, I would love to read it. TEC, how<lb />
irresponsible of you to put that in the paper. Some<lb />
people might actually believe this sort of nonsense.<lb />
Would it be too much to ask the library to update<lb />
their computer mice to the optical ones? Or even<lb />
snirtle clean the roller balls?<lb />
I vote Fifth Street to be renamed to Robert E. Lee Street.<lb />
OK here's the deal. It's getting hot out now, so show-<lb />
ering is a must. Please don't come to class smelling<lb />
like you have been dead for 10 years!<lb />
Beware of those apartments that advertise free "high<lb />
speed" wireless Internet. You get what you pay for<lb />
- nothing!<lb />
I'm too lazy to get up and rant myself, so my friend<lb />
is writing this.<lb />
Why do people open their doors into other people's<lb />
car? I'm sorry that your car is a piece of crap and you<lb />
I are jealous of my beautiful car, but that is no reason<lb />
to cause harm to my car. It's called karma. What goes<lb />
; around comes around, and one day I hope you have<lb />
something beautiful that sonieone destroys.<lb />
To the girls who walk in groups on the sidewalk<lb />
I and take up the whole thing, learn some respect<lb />
' and give a little space for the one person walking<lb />
the other way.<lb />
! About the article on overrated one-night stands,<lb />
you shouldn't assume that the guys are using the<lb />
girls. People (male and female) don't always regret<lb />
one night stands.<lb />
Give them an inch and they will take a foot.<lb />
Yay, we finally have a yearbook again! I've heard<lb />
that it may be a little more risque than your normal<lb />
high school yearbook though<lb />
Based on TC's article, you'd think that the recent<lb />
Career Fair wasn't a colossal waste of time for 95<lb />
percent of all majors.<lb />
To the car alarm that goes off every hour on College<lb />
Hill, please stop. It's really annoying to listen to you.<lb />
Wright Place has a sanitation grade of a "B Men-<lb />
denhall's Destination 360 has a grade of 90. Please<lb />
look in to this. This sucks for people with meal plans<lb />
who have to eat here!<lb />
I am so sick of people not washing their hands<lb />
after they get done using the bathroom. There is no<lb />
reason for me to wash my hands when I am about<lb />
to grab the same door handle that your nasty hands<lb />
just contaminated. Bathroom etiquette should have<lb />
been taught to you a long time ago. The sinks and<lb />
soap aren't just there for looks.<lb />
Maybe there would be less crime around campus<lb />
if I weren't sitting here in Joyner library watching<lb />
an ECU police officer flirt with a security guard for<lb />
over an hour.<lb />
Here's an idea, lets change the name of all Fifth<lb />
Street and MLK to Malcolm X drive!<lb />
Can we have less baby mama drama in the SGA please?<lb />
Beauty is overrated! Anyone can look gorgeous with<lb />
make-up.<lb />

a few of the exciting elements<lb />
that combine to make MTV's<lb />

craving more. Fans of the show<lb />
won't be disappointed with the<lb />

For 16 seasons, MTV's "The<lb />

"The Real World: Key West"<lb />
will offer the roommates some<lb />
unique challenges. The first of<lb />
these challenges was battling<lb />
Mother Nature in the form of<lb />
three hurricanes - Katrina, Rita<lb />

Nature didn't stand a chance<lb />
in the wake of their obligation<lb />
to open and run Mystic Sunless<lb />

However, as is expected in<lb />

roommates managed to cause<lb />
plenty of trouble when they set<lb />
out to party the night away on<lb />
the strip at hot spots such as Fat<lb />
Tuesday's and Lazy Gecko.<lb />
"The Real World" isn't all fun<lb />
and games - it also places focus<lb />
on issues that are often brushed<lb />
under the rug by our society. The<lb />
reality of the show echoes the<lb />
personal battles that not only<lb />
each roommate faces, but also<lb />
we as individuals face in our<lb />
everyday lives.<lb />
Since its premiere in 1992,<lb />
"The Real World" has put a<lb />
national spotlight on societal<lb />
issues such as AIDSHIV, sexual<lb />
orientation, racial tension, eating<lb />
disorders and alcoholism. This<lb />
season, two of the roommates<lb />
will face a battle with anorexia<lb />
and anger management prob-<lb />

"The Real World: Key West" is<lb />

definitely play an important role<lb />
in keeping things real.<lb />

Paul Walker, the lead character in the film, plays Joey Gazelle, an Italian lower-level bagman.<lb />
Cursing, shooting and<lb />
10-year-olds<lb />
SCOTTY WILLIAMS<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Shuffling into the theater<lb />
for a 10 o'clock showing of<lb />
Running Scared, this reviewer<lb />
was not exactly excited. A<lb />
particular pet peeve of mine in<lb />
movies is when a movie doesn't<lb />
proclaim what it is in the<lb />
trailer. The theatrical trailer<lb />
for this movie was a barrage of<lb />
bullets flying, people shooting<lb />
and angry voices with nothing<lb />
to declare about a plot or a<lb />
storyline, and I wasn't sure<lb />
what exactly the title implied.<lb />
A few minutes into the<lb />
movie, the subject matter<lb />
became more clear - once<lb />
you've seen it, you'll be run-<lb />
ning scared out of the theater,<lb />
haunted by the thought that<lb />
you actually had to give up<lb />
your money to see it.<lb />
Paul Walker is the lead in<lb />
this movie, playing a character<lb />
named Joey Gazelle. Walker's<lb />
character is supposed to be<lb />
Italian (I say "supposed to be"<lb />
because everyone who was<lb />
supposed to be Italian in this<lb />
movie slipped in and out of<lb />
an Italian accent like a pair<lb />
of khakis) and working in the<lb />
mob as a lower-level bagman,<lb />
essentially. Gazelle's job is to<lb />
dispose of hot pieces (other-<lb />
wise known as guns used to kill<lb />
people) and cover up things.<lb />
After one especially charged<lb />
deal goes bad and some cops<lb />
die, Gazelle has two pieces<lb />
to hide. Things go especially<lb />
wrong when a friend of his<lb />
son's gets the gun and shoots<lb />
his father. The rest of this<lb />
119-minute movie is Gazelle<lb />
chasing the gun and the little<lb />
boy through a sea of profan<lb />
ity, nudity and even child<lb />
molesters.<lb />
Movie reviewers need to<lb />
invent a new phrase to describe<lb />
the language in this movie.<lb />
Being a veteran and fan of<lb />
movies like Fight Club, where<lb />
every other word is profane,<lb />
I can honestly say this is the<lb />
most profane movie I have ever<lb />
seen. I would tell you the exact<lb />
number of occurrences of the<lb />
F-bomb in this movie, but that<lb />
would mean I have to go back<lb />
and see it again to count. The<lb />
potty-mouthed mobsters and<lb />
Russians in this movie easily<lb />
topped 100 times. If anything,<lb />
there were more curse words in<lb />
this movie than minutes.<lb />
When characters aren't<lb />
raining a sea of profanities,<lb />
they're shooting each other in<lb />
gratuitous scenes of bloodshed<lb />
or groping each other's clearly<lb />
visible private parts. Oh yeah,<lb />
and two preteen children are<lb />
main characters starring in<lb />
the midst of this debauchery.<lb />
When you can't watch a movie<lb />
without your conscience and<lb />
ethos sitting on your head, that<lb />
says something.<lb />
If there is one thing viewers<lb />
should learn about this film, it<lb />
is that Paul Walker is not fit for<lb />
a leading role in a movie. After<lb />
watching The Fast and the Furi-<lb />
ous and Into the Blue, the public<lb />
should know this. Walker's<lb />
character goes off to commit<lb />
horrible actions, usually with<lb />
one of the two children in tow,<lb />
stomps around and cusses at<lb />
women, children and big hairy<lb />
men, but apparently has a soft<lb />
side. We'll contact the FBI to<lb />
go looking for it.<lb />
The movie's one selling<lb />
point was a bevy of special<lb />
effects and intense camera<lb />
work, which is slightly impres-<lb />
sive, but only from the stance<lb />
of special camera effects work.<lb />
Hollywood needs to realize<lb />
that no gun has the firepower<lb />
to send a person flying 15 feet<lb />
across a room, no matter how<lb />
cool it might look.<lb />
This movie is supposed to<lb />
have a plot, but nothing is all<lb />
that discernable in terms of a<lb />
plot. The action of the movie<lb />
takes so many turns, you're<lb />
guessing at the end. The acting<lb />
in the movie is forgettable, and<lb />
you can't remember a single<lb />
interesting piece of acting 15<lb />
minutes after you walk out<lb />
of the movie. The only thing<lb />
you will remember as you<lb />

JOHN BOSCO<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
It's hard for me to believe, but<lb />
it's already March.<lb />
When I started this column<lb />
in January, it was with the wrap-<lb />
up of the best records of 2005<lb />
that you hadn't heard. I made a<lb />
point that one of my goals was to<lb />
expose you to music that you've<lb />
maybe never heard but probably<lb />
should give a chance.<lb />
Well, it's about time I gave<lb />
my recommendations for some<lb />
albums released this year that<lb />
are worth checking out. Lucky<lb />
for you, they come just in time to<lb />
enjoy during spring break.<lb />
Neko Case - Fox Confessor<lb />
Brings the Flood. Without a<lb />
doubt, the focus of this album is<lb />
Case's amazing voice. Her range<lb />
is somewhere amid the greats like<lb />
Nancy Sinatra, Patsy Cline and<lb />
Judy Garland. Her pristine vocal<lb />
performance fits perfectly with<lb />
the modern musical arrange-<lb />
ments on this album. If you are<lb />
looking for an uncommon sound<lb />
that doesn't push you away with<lb />
eccentricity, look no further. I<lb />
recommend you get two copies,<lb />
one for you and one to pass on<lb />
to a friend.<lb />
The Elected - Sun, Sun,<lb />
Sun. Rilo Kiley's Blake Sennett<lb />
takes a break from the poppy<lb />
sound Rilo fans may be familiar<lb />
with and moves toward a more<lb />
singer-songwriter style with his<lb />
band, The Elected. The maturity<lb />
and complexity of this album<lb />
is surprising and enjoyable. I've<lb />
already written the full review<lb />
on this one, so it should come as<lb />
no surprise that it's making the<lb />
Best-of-2006-So-Far list.<lb />
NOFX - Never Trust A<lb />
Hippy EP. If 1 had to admit<lb />
one guilty pleasure, it would<lb />
be NOFX. Actually, there's no<lb />
guilt involved. They are, and<lb />
always have been, on the cut-<lb />
W7W1? 915<lb />
ting edge of what punk music is<lb />
and should be - political, gritty,<lb />
hilarious and creative. They<lb />
bring some of the most amazing<lb />
vocal harmonies I've ever heard<lb />
to a genre that rarely considers<lb />
them an option. As self-taught<lb />
musicians, they attack politics<lb />
and extremist bands like Pro-<lb />
poghandi with good points and<lb />
they don't back down. They<lb />
stand up for their beliefs and<lb />
should be respected for that.<lb />
They are the epitome of punk,<lb />
and Never Trust A Hippy is sure to<lb />
make religious hypocrites cringe.<lb />
Rachael Cantu - Run All<lb />
Night. I admit it, I'm a sucker for<lb />
Tegan and Sara (you try listen-<lb />
ing to "Walking with a Ghost"<lb />
and not hum it all day long).<lb />
So when I got wind that Tegan<lb />
was doing vocals on a Rachael<lb />
Cantu track, I had to give it a<lb />
listen. Hun All Night may only be<lb />
eight tracks long, but I'm already<lb />
a Rachael Cantu fan. Though<lb />
nothing here steps out of the<lb />
bounds of anything I've ever<lb />
heard before, something about<lb />
the album sticks. Last week it was<lb />
the station's number one charted<lb />
album, and that doesn't surprise<lb />
me one bit.<lb />
I kl ant - The Black Magic<lb />
Show. For anyone who might<lb />
have read the Pitchfork review<lb />
of Elefant's new album and<lb />
decided it wouldn't be worth<lb />
their time, I beg you to think<lb />
again. While Pitchfork usually<lb />
gets it right, they were way off<lb />
with The Black Magic Show. Ele-<lb />
fant managed to take their sound<lb />
one step beyond their last release,<lb />
Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid, with<lb />
a great-sounding follow-up.<lb />
Unlike their last album, this<lb />
collection isn't entirely love<lb />
songs. Some tracks fall short,<lb />
but overall, the songs are well-<lb />
composed and have good hooks.<lb />
The Strokes -1 list Impres-<lb />
sions Of Earth. Come on. If<lb />
you haven't heard about the<lb />
Strokes by now, you are missing<lb />
out on a huge chunk of good<lb />
popular music. Rarely do bands<lb />
as good as The Strokes get as<lb />
much airplay as they deserve.<lb />
Their new album, released in<lb />
early January, continues their<lb />
climb to the top of rock music.<lb />
Personally, it seems to me the<lb />
feel of this album is less garage-<lb />
rock than their past releases;<lb />
The Strokes just seem more<lb />
aware of themselves as a band.<lb />
Beth Orton - Comfort of<lb />
Strangers. Initially, 1 wasn't sure<lb />
how I felt about this album I<lb />
popped it in and thought, "Great,<lb />
another folk singer-songwriter<lb />
looking for some airplay Luckily,<lb />
it didn't end there. After giving<lb />
it a full listen, the melodies on<lb />
this album stuck with me and<lb />
her voice did, too. Orton's vocal<lb />
prowess is shown on Comfort of<lb />
Strangers - this album has sparse<lb />
and minimal arrangements, but<lb />
the beauty in her voice and<lb />
her knack for melody shines<lb />
through.<lb />
Hopefully you found some-<lb />
thing on this list that you might<lb />
enjoy. As always, be sure to tune<lb />
in to WZMB 91.3 as we continue<lb />
to put the rad back into radio.<lb />

From New York to Los<lb />

chronicles the rise of the U.S. Air<lb />
Guitar Championships through<lb />
the eyes of former world cham-<lb />

through the personal journeys of<lb />

and Lipsitz are also executive pro-<lb />

as NBC's "Last Comic Standing<lb />
Bravo's "Project Runway" and<lb />
HBO's "Project Greenlight<lb />
The competitions will con-<lb />
sist of two rounds. In the first<lb />
round, competitors perform to a<lb />
song of their choice. In round<lb />
two, the top competitors from<lb />
round one perform to a sur-<lb />
prise compulsory song. In each<lb />
round, contestants perform for<lb />
one minute to their songs and<lb />
are then judged on a combina-<lb />
tion of technical expertise, stage<lb />
presence and "airness The most<lb />
important regulation that the<lb />
contestants must follow is that all<lb />
guitars have to be invisible.<lb />
The 2005 U.S. Air Guitar<lb />
Champion is Fatima "the Rock-<lb />

2004 and 2003 champions being<lb />
MiRi "Sonyk-Rok" Park and<lb />
David "C-Diddy" Jung. All three<lb />
victors possess the technical<lb />
wizardry, stage presence and the<lb />
ever-elusive "airness" required to<lb />
succeed in this competition.<lb />
Air guitar can be viewed as<lb />
musical self-expression, a com-<lb />
petitive sport or a form of perfor-<lb />

air guitar is so embedded in the<lb />
fabric of American life that it has<lb />
become an almost instinctual<lb />
response. When the right riff is<lb />
heard in a groovy tune, for many<lb />
of us, air guitar simply happens.<lb />

Red-hot Smith looking to<lb />
continue RBI assault<lb />
BRENT WYNNE<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
After walloping Duke for the<lb />
second time this season, a 17-4<lb />
beat down Tuesday that included<lb />
catcher Jake Smith going off for<lb />
a grand slam and six RBI, the<lb />
Pirates will return to action<lb />
this weekend when they host<lb />
2004 Kinston Regional opponent<lb />
Stony Brook.<lb />
Smith, who his hitting .386<lb />
with three homers and 20 RBI<lb />
this season, was named Confer-<lb />
ence USA's Hitter of the Week<lb />
for his efforts during last week's<lb />
games. He batted .444 over a four<lb />
game stretch, three of which were<lb />
Pirate victories, and also blasted<lb />
a home run, two doubles and<lb />
collected 10 RBI.<lb />
Smith is proving not only to<lb />
be one of the elite hitters in the<lb />
conference, but also one of the<lb />
most feared arms behind the<lb />
plate in the nation. Runners have<lb />
tried 14 times to steal against<lb />
the senior catcher, and Smith<lb />
has successfully gunned down<lb />
eight would-be stealers. That's<lb />
an alarming success rate of 57<lb />
percent, a percentage that most<lb />
big league catchers can't claim<lb />
to have.<lb />
Head Coach Matt Senk and<lb />
his Stony Brook Seawolves will<lb />
look to change the luck of Pirate<lb />
opponents against Smith, as<lb />
well as try to steal a win or two<lb />
from the Diamond Bucs in Clark-<lb />
LeClair Stadium.<lb />
In their first and only series<lb />
of the season, the Seawolves<lb />
traveled to Orlando, Fla. to take<lb />
on Central Florida. The Golden<lb />
Knights swept the series 1-0, 8-3<lb />
and 5-4 to drop Stony Brook to<lb />
0-3 to start the 2006 season.<lb />
Don't let these three losses<lb />
fool you. The Seawolves were<lb />
highly competitive throughout<lb />
the weekend, with some great<lb />
pitching and defense. Where<lb />
Brook failed to capitalize was at<lb />
the plate, where they managed<lb />
just 18 hits, an average of six a<lb />
game, and a team batting aver-<lb />
age of .182.<lb />
Isidro Fortuna leads the Sea-<lb />
wolves at the dish. He leads<lb />
the team with a .429 average,<lb />
including two doubles, a triple<lb />
and a run scored. Freshman<lb />
Steven Mazzurco is batting .375<lb />
with a triple and a RBI. The only<lb />
other Brook player batting .300<lb />
or better is Chris Sipp, with<lb />
a .300 average and a RBI. Jon<lb />
Pasieka and Robert Dyer have<lb />
both chipped in two "BI.<lb />
The lack of offense has put<lb />
Stony Brook's pitching staff in<lb />
a near impossible situation to<lb />
win games. Kris Bakey started<lb />
game one for the Seawolves<lb />
and pitched masterfully for six<lb />
innings, allowing just three hits<lb />
and no runs, but Brook's offense<lb />
put up goose eggs, falling to<lb />
the Golden Knights 1-0. Bakey<lb />
got a no decision despite being<lb />
brilliant.<lb />
Stony Brook ran out to an<lb />
early 1-0 lead in game two, before<lb />
starter Brian Murtagh collapsed<lb />
in the second, giving up six runs<lb />
and six hits to allow UCF to seize<lb />
control of the contest. The bright<lb />
spot for the rest of the game<lb />
was the pitching of Mike Errigo.<lb />
Errigo stopped the bleeding for<lb />
the most part of his 5.2 innings.<lb />
He allowed five hits and only<lb />
one run. Don't be surprised if<lb />
Head Coach Matt Senk decides<lb />
to go with Errigo as a starter this<lb />
weekend against the Pirates.<lb />
Matt Restivo started and<lb />
pitched five innings in game<lb />
three, and had it not been for<lb />
a fielding error in the fourth<lb />
inning that allowed UCF to score<lb />
three unearned runs, he would've<lb />
shut out the Golden Knights for<lb />
the five innings he was in. He<lb />
gave up three hits and struck<lb />
out three.<lb />
Bakey, Errigo and Restivo will<lb />
be the key for the Seawolves' staff<lb />
if they hope to win a game or<lb />
games against ECU this weekend.<lb />
While it's obvious that this<lb />
isn't the same team that won<lb />
the American East and gave the<lb />
Pirates all they could handle in<lb />
the Kinston Regional in 2004,<lb />
the philosophy is the same. This<lb />
team will be scrappy and fight<lb />
for every run they get or give.<lb />
Expect some very good pitching<lb />
and solid defense along with a lot<lb />
of small ball and manufacturing<lb />
runs. The Seawolves will come<lb />
into Greenville focused on leav-<lb />
ing with wins.<lb />
Game time Friday is 3 p.m.<lb />
The Pirates and Seawolves battle<lb />
again Saturday and Sunday at<lb />
1 p.m.<lb />

Skip Holtz spent last spring<lb />
learning players' names and posi-<lb />
tions while trying to install his<lb />
offense. In year two, Holtz plans<lb />
for things to run much smoother.<lb />
"We don't have to put the<lb />
names on their helmets so it's not<lb />
'hey 82, come here said Holtz<lb />
about the differences between<lb />
last season and this.<lb />
"We actually know these<lb />
guys a little bit more now. You're<lb />
going out there with a much<lb />
more advanced agenda. Last year,<lb />
we took almost all spring to put<lb />
everything in. This year, you can<lb />
almost roll the balls out there.<lb />
You can say 'OK, we're going to<lb />
put in half the offense in day<lb />
one and half the offense in day<lb />
two' because they know what to<lb />
do. We're not going to be teach-<lb />
ing what to do, we're going to be<lb />
teaching how to do it<lb />
All kidding aside, Holtz has<lb />
plenty of business items to cover<lb />
during the NCAA sanctioned 15<lb />
practices. He and his coaching<lb />
staff must fill holes on the offen-<lb />
sive line, at fullback, tight end<lb />
and linebacker. Holtz must also<lb />
juggle the newest recruits and<lb />
nagging injuries while overseeing<lb />
fierce position battles.<lb />
Holtz announced an addition<lb />
to his coaching staff by the hiring<lb />
Don Yanowsky as tight endsspe-<lb />
cial teams coach. Yanowsky, who<lb />
coached at ECU during 2000-01,<lb />
most recently served on the Duke<lb />
staff for three years. Yanowsky<lb />
was the defensive line coach<lb />
during his previous stint with<lb />
ECU. He replaces Greg McMahon,<lb />
who left to become the assistant<lb />
special teams coach for the New<lb />
Orleans Saints.<lb />
Quarterbacks<lb />
Three-year starter James<lb />
Pinkney will undergo his first<lb />
spring practice under Holtz after<lb />
missing last season with aca-<lb />
demic trouble. The threesome<lb />
of sophomore Patrick Pinkney,<lb />
redshirt freshmen Rob Kass and<lb />
Brett Clay are in a heated battle<lb />
for the backup slot. The younger<lb />
Pinkney will be healthy for the<lb />
first time in his career while<lb />
Kass ran the scout team during<lb />
the fall.<lb />
Offensive line<lb />
The offensive line was the<lb />
largest question mark follow-<lb />
ing the fall with the loss of<lb />
three seniors. But according to<lb />
Holtz and offensive line coach<lb />
Steve Shankweiler, the staff has<lb />
already tentatively penciled<lb />
in four starters. Josh Coffman<lb />
and Eric Graham will probably<lb />
man the tackle slots while Matt <lb />
Butler and Terence Campbett<lb />
will likely play guard. However,<lb />
Holtz reiterated that the center<lb />
position is wide open as former<lb />
defensive tackle Fred Hicks moves<lb />
across the ball. Senior Thomas<lb />
Wingenbach and grayshirt Larry<lb />
Lease are in contention. Senior<lb />
Lance Neisz will be held out of<lb />
contact drills until after spring<lb />
break while last season's backup<lb />
center, Drew Sutton, won't make<lb />
it back until the fall. Redshirt<lb />
freshman Jonathan Battle and<lb />
midseason transfer Andrew Farr<lb />
will add depth. Davon Drew, up<lb />
to 242 pounds after being moved<lb />
from quarterback, is the likely<lb />
starter at tight end. Jay Sonnhal-<lb />
ter is the only other tight end<lb />
with game experience because<lb />
Shawn Levesque decided to forgo<lb />
his senior season for personal<lb />
reasons.<lb />
Running backs<lb />
Two-year starter Chris John-<lb />
son will be pushed by sophomore<lb />
Dominique Lindsey and senior<lb />
Brandon Fractious. Fractious will<lb />
look to solve his fumbling stigma<lb />
while Johnson will try to build<lb />
momentum from his 684-yard<lb />
season. Robert Tillman, used<lb />

Poker events: Buddies think they know when to hold 'em<lb />
Rabin, left, and Beck offer collegiate poker tournaments of Texas Hold-em<lb />
(KRT) The bond between<lb />
buddies Craig Rabin and Jason<lb />
Beck is obvious, particularly in the<lb />
way they tend to finish the dan-<lb />
gling end of each other's sentences.<lb />
The way Beck tells it, he called<lb />
Rabin as soon as he got the idea<lb />
in 2004 to start a business that<lb />
would host free college poker<lb />
tournaments at which students<lb />
would compete for scholarships.<lb />
It didn't matter that the pair<lb />
was separated by more than a<lb />
thousand miles, with Beck in<lb />
college in Miami and Rabin at Illi-<lb />
nois State University in Normal.<lb />
Rabin picks up the story: "1<lb />
was like, 'This is a great idea So<lb />
I had this business class that was<lb />
on small business ownership. We<lb />
had to create a fake company. But<lb />
I was thinking, why create a fake<lb />
hot dog stand when we have got<lb />
this great idea?"<lb />
Since 8th grade, Beck and<lb />
Rabin have talked about running<lb />
a business together. Now, less than<lb />
a year after graduating from col-<lb />
lege with business degrees, they<lb />
are hosting free traveling Texas<lb />
Hold 'Em poker tournaments at<lb />
six universities. In April they will<lb />
hold an online national champi-<lb />
onship with a scholarship prize<lb />
pool of up to $20,000.<lb />
The budding entrepreneurs<lb />
have succeeded in avoiding the<lb />
corporate 9-to-5, but they are<lb />
entering controversial territory in<lb />
bringing a "legitimized" version of<lb />
poker onto university campuses.<lb />
Beck and Rabin aim to ride<lb />
the poker wave; there has been an<lb />
enormous growth in the game's<lb />
popularity in general and in col-<lb />
lege poker, in particular, during<lb />
the past few years.<lb />
There are about 3 million<lb />
young people, between ages 14<lb />
and 22, who gamble at cards on a<lb />
weekly basis, according to a recent<lb />
study by the Annenberg Public<lb />
Policy Center at the University of<lb />
Pennsylvania. About half of the<lb />
males attending college gamble<lb />
at cards at least once a month, the<lb />
research showed.<lb />
Long a popular pastime, now<lb />
poker events on television have<lb />
glamorized the game and those<lb />
who play it.<lb />
Beck, who worked in the Uni-<lb />
versity of Miami's intramural<lb />
department and played poker in<lb />
college, said he couldn't help but<lb />
notice students' growing interest in<lb />
the game. He said he thought schol-<lb />
arship tournaments hosted mainly<lb />
by university intramural depart-<lb />
ments and funded by local and<lb />
national sponsorships would allow<lb />
students to enjoy the excitement<lb />
of the game without the troubling<lb />
aspects of gambling for money.<lb />
But as popular as it is, college<lb />
poker is controversial, particularly<lb />
when it comes to university-spon-<lb />
sored events. University officials<lb />
have been criticized for being slow<lb />
to recognize and react to problem<lb />
student gambling in the same way<lb />
they have to drug and alcohol abuse.<lb />
Legal gaming is heavily regu-<lb />
lated and Internet gambling is ille-<lb />
gal in Illinois, though anyone with<lb />
a credit card, online access and a<lb />
search engine can quickly find a<lb />
place to play poker or other games.<lb />
Keith Whyte, executive direc-<lb />
tor of the National Council on<lb />
Problem Gambling, says this<lb />
operation may be a problem.<lb />

CAR<lb />
(AP) For Jason Fraser, a<lb />
one-and-one was more likely to<lb />
mean operations on both of his<lb />
knees on the same day than a trip<lb />
to the free-throw line.<lb />
Curtis Sumpter's MRI exam<lb />
revealed a torn ACL that earned<lb />
him a DNP against North Caro-<lb />
lina in last season's NCAA tour-<lb />
nament.<lb />
Now it's Allan Ray's turn to<lb />
learn if the give-and-go means<lb />
all he can do in his final home<lb />
game is give some high-fives<lb />
and go to the bench because of<lb />
a sprained knee.<lb />
Say this for Villanova's senior<lb />
class, these players know almost<lb />
as much about X-rays as they do<lb />
about game film.<lb />
And when the group is intro-<lb />
duced before their home finale<lb />
Wednesday against St. John's,<lb />
the seniors better not forget to<lb />
thank the doctors, trainers and<lb />
physical therapists, as well as<lb />
Mom and Dad.<lb />
But this group didn't come<lb />
to Villanova to earn an MD. The<lb />
quartet of Fraser, Sumpter, Ray<lb />
and Randy Foye arrived together<lb />
as coach Jay Wright's first prized<lb />
recruiting class and were deter-<lb />
mined to return the Wildcats to<lb />
college basketball's elite level.<lb />
"If we're going to make this<lb />
program go, it had to start with<lb />
us said Foye, Villanova's lead-<lb />
ing scorer.<lb />
"We took it upon ourselves<lb />
that we've got to do this<lb />
All four played a part in<lb />
making fourth-ranked Villanova<lb />
(22-3, 12-2 Big East) a national<lb />
championship contender again.<lb />
The senior night game might<lb />
or might not include Ray, who<lb />
sprained his knee in Sunday's<lb />
loss at Connecticut. The game<lb />
definitely won't include Sumpter,<lb />
who has missed all season recov-<lb />
ering from two knee surgeries.<lb />
"That was the plan from the<lb />
beginning, to go out together<lb />
Sumpter said.<lb />
"But things happen along<lb />
the way<lb />
Instead of putting together<lb />
two 10-game winning streaks<lb />
with a four-guard lineup, the<lb />
Wildcats could have been charg-<lb />
ing down the stretch with four<lb />
senior starters. But injuries and<lb />
operations slowed the careers of<lb />
Sumpter and Fraser.<lb />
The 6-foot-9, 225-pound<lb />
Fraser was supposed to be the<lb />
best of the bunch, coming to<lb />
the Main Line as a McDonald's<lb />
Ail-American after leading Ami-<lb />
tyville High School to four<lb />
straight New York State Class B<lb />
titles. He was athletic, could run<lb />
well for a big man and block<lb />
shots, and was considered tal-<lb />
ented enough to make the leap to<lb />
the NBA right out of high school.<lb />
There isn't much leaping or<lb />
jumping anywhere these days.<lb />
Fraser has been plagued by<lb />
injury since he was a freshman,<lb />
missing four games his first year<lb />
because of a stress fracture in his<lb />
foot and three others when he<lb />
was suspended because of phone-<lb />
card violations. He missed eight<lb />
more games with a broken left<lb />
foot as a sophomore, and four<lb />
more last season with a broken<lb />
bone in his right hand.<lb />

for time as well. Wide receivers'<lb />
coach Donnie Kirkpatrick has<lb />
plenty of depth to work with,<lb />

wideout he lacked in 2005.<lb />
Defensive line<lb />
Marcus Hands is still recover-<lb />

prematurely ended his 2005<lb />
season delaying his return for<lb />
the fall. Senior Shauntae Hunt<lb />
is penciled in as the defensive<lb />

man Scotty Robinson and junior<lb />
Wendell Chavis. The interior<lb />
is thin, however, with Dontre<lb />
Brown, Brandon Setzer and Mark<lb />
Robinson vying for the two<lb />
starting slots at defensive tackle.<lb />
Depth, though, will be an issue<lb />
as grayshirt Johnnie McCoy is<lb />
the only other scholarship player<lb />
practicing.<lb />
Linebackers<lb />
Four of the five top lineback-<lb />

who will not practice due to a<lb />

spring. Lackawanna College<lb />
teammates Danny Muhwezi and<lb />
Orlando Farrow along with Fred<lb />
Wilson will compete with juniors<lb />
Durwin Lamb and Quentin<lb />

mix. Depth won't be a problem<lb />
as the three starting slots are a<lb />
free-for-all.<lb />
Secondary<lb />
Jamar Flournoy was the slated<lb />

before a season-long suspension<lb />
forced a redshirt. The senior<lb />

saw significant playing time in<lb />
2005. Redshirt freshmen Van<lb />

in April 2003, and seven over-<lb />

The number he cherishes<lb />

In a perfect scenario, Fraser<lb />

Considered the Wildcats most<lb />

the ACL in his left knee in a<lb />

the season-ending loss against<lb />
