ECU earns Honorable Mention in<lb/>
Residential Construction Competition<lb/>
2006 ECU Competition<lb/>
Team Member<lb/>
STEVEN G. BEATTY<lb/>
CONTRIBUTED WRITER<lb/>
ECU earned Honorable Men-<lb/>
tion in the NAHB Student Chap-<lb/>
ter Residential Construction<lb/>
Competition that took place<lb/>
during the 2006 International<lb/>
Builders Show in Orlando, Fla.<lb/>
ECU's team took sixth place out<lb/>
of 36 four-year colleges and uni-<lb/>
versities. Last year ECU ranked<lb/>
16th, so this year's move to sixth<lb/>
place is a gain of 10 positions<lb/>
in one year. This is an amazing<lb/>
accomplishment.<lb/>
NAHB's student competi-<lb/>
tions are beneficial to students,<lb/>
their universities and the indus-<lb/>
try at large. By participating,<lb/>
students integrate their edu- <lb/>
cational preparation into real g<lb/>
world applications. Individuals I<lb/>
push beyond their perceived<lb/>
inadequacies, increase their<lb/>
appreciation of effective team-<lb/>
work and learn to promote their<lb/>
efforts. Their self-satisfaction of<lb/>
having risen to the challenge and<lb/>
accomplishing their goals culmi-<lb/>
nates this process, and then they<lb/>
get the opportunity to attend<lb/>
the International Builders Show.<lb/>
Students can observe how others<lb/>
dealt with the same problem,<lb/>
providing an important "debrief-<lb/>
ing" process to their efforts.<lb/>
Universities benefit from<lb/>
the students' exposure to indus-<lb/>
try representatives. A relatively<lb/>

Ray Garris, Tla Hudson, Andrew Rowley, Steven Beatty (front), Grant Lockhart (back),<lb/>

(From Left): 2005 ECU Competition Team: Scott Seaman, Bryan Allen, Baxter<lb/>
Matthews, David Price, Ryan Wood, Kevin Bowman.<lb/>
small but energized group of<lb/>
students can spark a firestorm of<lb/>
interest in residential construc-<lb/>
tion through their peer-to-peer<lb/>
interactions upon return to their<lb/>
home institutions. Reward to the<lb/>
industry is also evidenced by<lb/>
corporate exposure, recruiting<lb/>
of the best students and creating<lb/>
ambassadors to the next genera-<lb/>
tion of residential constructors.<lb/>
These competitions form a link<lb/>
between the student, the uni-<lb/>
versity and the industry, thereby<lb/>
culturing future success for all<lb/>
partners involved.<lb/>
"Until tonight, there were<lb/>
very few people in that room<lb/>
where the awards were given<lb/>
that knew ECU's name. Now they<lb/>
all know who we are said Dr.<lb/>
Douglas Kruger, chairperson of<lb/>
the Department of Construction<lb/>
Management.<lb/>
Every year at the NAHB Inter-<lb/>
national Builders Show, stu-<lb/>
dent chapters from two- and<lb/>
four-year colleges and universi-<lb/>
ties are invited to participate<lb/>
in the NAHB Student Chapter<lb/>
Residential Construction<lb/>
Competition during the IBS.<lb/>
The IBS is the second largest<lb/>
trade show in the United States,<lb/>
surpassed only recently by the<lb/>
Consumer Electronics Show<lb/>
in Las Vegas, Nev. The IBS is<lb/>
Orlando's largest trade-show<lb/>
with more than 135,000 people<lb/>
believed to have attended.<lb/>
The student competition is an<lb/>
event that simulates a real-world<lb/>
scenario. Teams compete for<lb/>
project approval and funding as<lb/>
though they were a local operat-<lb/>
ing division of a large national<lb/>
home building company. This<lb/>
competition gives students the<lb/>
opportunity to apply academic<lb/>
studies and classroom work to<lb/>
an actual construction project.<lb/>
There are separate events for four-<lb/>
year colleges and for two-year<lb/>
colleges. Last year, 29 chapters<lb/>
participated. ECU has been the<lb/>
only N.C. undergraduate institu-<lb/>
tion to field a competition team<lb/>
since 2004.<lb/>

The driver of the vehicle that killed Kyle Niccum, left, is unknown.<lb/>
Young man killed in<lb/>
hit-and-run accident<lb/>
Family asks for students'<lb/>
help as they search for<lb/>
answers<lb/>
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
During the early morning<lb/>
hours on the morning of Jan.<lb/>
29, 2006, Kyle Niccum, 22, of<lb/>
Raleigh was killed in a hit-and-<lb/>
run accident on Green Street<lb/>
in Greenville. While police are<lb/>
still investigating the incident,<lb/>
Kyle's father, Jeff Niccum, asked<lb/>
TEC to publish an article about<lb/>
the accident in the hopes that<lb/>
ECU students may provide some<lb/>
answers about what happened.<lb/>
Kyle Niccum and his friend<lb/>
Brandon Price traveled to<lb/>
Greenville to visit their friend<lb/>
William Cannady. The three<lb/>
friends were downtown when<lb/>
Price became involved in a fight,<lb/>
which led him to be taken to<lb/>
the hospital. Niccum and Can-<lb/>
nady, believing that Price had<lb/>
been taken to the Pitt County<lb/>
Detention Center, hailed a cab<lb/>
to find their friend. When they<lb/>
learned he had been taken to the<lb/>
hospital, Niccum and Cannady<lb/>
opted to walk back to Cannady's<lb/>
apartment after unsuccessful<lb/>
attempts to reach friends and<lb/>
taxis. According to a police<lb/>
report provided by the Greenville<lb/>
Police Department, Niccum<lb/>
and Price somehow went in the<lb/>
wrong direction, arriving at<lb/>
Green Street near Industrial<lb/>
Boulevard and New Hope Drive.<lb/>
An unidentified motorist travel-<lb/>
ing North on Green Street hit<lb/>
Niccum, throwing him approxi-<lb/>
mately 102 feet from the point<lb/>
of impact.<lb/>
"The driver apparently<lb/>
stopped stated Sergeant R. W.<lb/>
Worthington of the Greenville<lb/>
Police Department.<lb/>
"The driveT then said that<lb/>
they would go for medical help,<lb/>
but they never returned<lb/>
According to Sgt. Worthing-<lb/>
ton, the car that hit Kyle Niccum<lb/>
could have sustained damage<lb/>
to its front end, hood andor<lb/>
the right side of its windshield.<lb/>
Molding recovered at the scene<lb/>
of the accident suggests the car<lb/>
may have been white or light<lb/>
colored.<lb/>
Several motorists stopped to<lb/>
help, and police are hoping that<lb/>
they will be able to provide any<lb/>
information they can about the<lb/>
night of the accident.<lb/>
Jeff Niccum described his<lb/>
son Kyle as a good kid and as<lb/>
the kind of guy who would do<lb/>
anything for his buddies. Kyle<lb/>
wrestled and played football for<lb/>
Garner High School in Raleigh.<lb/>
Kyle moved back to Raleigh<lb/>
from Boone, where he attended<lb/>
Appalachian State University. He<lb/>
stopped going after he found out<lb/>
he was going to be a father. While<lb/>
working to support his child, he<lb/>
continued to follow his dream<lb/>
of becoming an engineer. He<lb/>
attended classes at Wake Techni-<lb/>
cal Community College to try to<lb/>
reach this goal.<lb/>
Kyle's family is deeply sad-<lb/>
dened by their loss. Kyle's par-<lb/>
ents, Jeff and Debbie, have lost<lb/>
a son. Kyle's sister Danielle, 24,<lb/>
has lost her little brother. Kyle's<lb/>
brother Christopher, 17, has<lb/>
lost his big brother and hunting<lb/>
partner. Probably most heart<lb/>
breaking of all is that three-<lb/>
year-old Cole Jacques has lost<lb/>
his father. Yet, it is through Cole<lb/>
that the family says they find<lb/>
strength.<lb/>

A memorial service for Dr.<lb/>
Gay Wilentz, professor of Eng-<lb/>
lish, was held Wednesday in the<lb/>
Science and Technology building<lb/>
at 3 p.m. to remember her life<lb/>
and many contributions to the<lb/>
university.<lb/>
Wilentz passed away on Feb.<lb/>
6 from an illness called AOS. She<lb/>
had her actual funeral service in<lb/>
Belize, where she spent much of<lb/>
her life for research and educa-<lb/>
tional purposes.<lb/>
The memorial was titled, "A<lb/>
Celebration of Life There was a<lb/>
large turnout of her colleagues,<lb/>
students, family and friends.<lb/>
A total of 10 people spoke<lb/>
about their experiences with<lb/>
Wilentz and what type of person<lb/>
she was.<lb/>
Many of the speakers couldn't<lb/>
fight back tears but still smiled as<lb/>
they mentioned how full of life<lb/>
she seemed, even during the last<lb/>
stages of life.<lb/>
Julie Fay, professor of English,<lb/>
recalled Wilentz saying, "It's life,<lb/>
what can you do?" when speak-<lb/>
ing optimistically of her life and<lb/>
illness.<lb/>
Fay said that she and Wilentz<lb/>
met each other in college and<lb/>
ended up becoming colleagues<lb/>
and frienfls for 20 years.<lb/>
Fay recited verses from the<lb/>
musical collection Wilentz lis-<lb/>
tened to before her death. The<lb/>
song was titled "Warrior" and<lb/>
illustrated the types of things<lb/>
Wilentz enjoyed.<lb/>
Many ECU professors, friends and colleagues were on hand yesterday to honor Gay Wilentz.<lb/>
Wilentz was very dedicated<lb/>
to teaching and to her students.<lb/>
According to Fay, Wilentz made a<lb/>
commitment to herself a few days<lb/>
before her death that she would<lb/>
e-mail her students.<lb/>
Seodial Deena, associate pro-<lb/>
fessor of English, was among the<lb/>
group of speakers who talked<lb/>
about Wilentz's commitment to<lb/>
education. Deena spoke about<lb/>
the study abroad trips they had<lb/>
to Belize.<lb/>
Wilentz devoted much of her<lb/>
time to educational endeavors<lb/>
in Belize.<lb/>
Her last trip to Belize was in<lb/>
the summer of 2005, according<lb/>
to one of the speakers. She was<lb/>
ill at the time but still managed<lb/>
to make the trip there.<lb/>
Carla Pastor, professor of<lb/>
English and Wilentz's surrogate<lb/>
daughter, spoke at the memo-<lb/>
rial.<lb/>
Pastor talked about how<lb/>
much she valued Wilentz's<lb/>
company and how much the<lb/>
Belizean people loved Wilentz.<lb/>
Michael Bassman, assis-<lb/>
tant vice chancellor of the<lb/>
honors program, lead a bless-<lb/>
ing in Hebrew called Kaddish,<lb/>
which means sanctification.<lb/>
Everyone said a blessing<lb/>
at the end of the memorial.<lb/>
Dr. Bruce Southard, Robert<lb/>
Siegel, Dr. Deirdre Mageean, Dr.<lb/>
Jane Marcus, Dr. Lillian Robinson<lb/>
and Dr. James Smith also spoke at<lb/>
the memorial.<lb/>
Mike Hamer and Susan Lud-<lb/>
deke did the musical selection for<lb/>
the memorial.<lb/>
Luddeke sang while<lb/>
Hamer play a stringed musical<lb/>
instrument. Luddeke was in tears<lb/>
throughout the song and said,<lb/>
"That was too hard as she went<lb/>
to her seat after the song.<lb/>
During the memorial, pic-<lb/>
tures of Wilentz on vacations,<lb/>
study abroad trips, and interact-<lb/>
ing with students and family<lb/>
flashed on a large projector<lb/>
screen.<lb/>

Military takes advantage of online programs<lb/>
Men and women in<lb/>
uniform attend class<lb/>
CLAYTON BAUMAN<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
ECU is working closely with<lb/>
the armed forces to provide dis-<lb/>
tance education to hundreds of<lb/>
men and women in uniform.<lb/>
In conjunction with the estab-<lb/>
lished distance program provided<lb/>
already, men and women in<lb/>
every branch are working toward<lb/>
associate, bachelor's and master's<lb/>
degrees in locations as far away as<lb/>
Iraq and beyond.<lb/>
"We have a very strong dis-<lb/>
tance education program at the<lb/>
university said Steve Duncan,<lb/>
director of the Office of Military<lb/>
Programs.<lb/>
"More than 4,000 students<lb/>
are signed up<lb/>
Duncan went on to talk about<lb/>
how members of the military, as<lb/>
a part of their own self develop-<lb/>
ment, seek distance education.<lb/>
"Officers seek master's<lb/>
degrees, enlisted people seek asso-<lb/>
ciate degrees, bachelor's degrees<lb/>
and some master's degrees<lb/>
Duncan said.<lb/>
The distance program is a<lb/>
valuable tool considering the<lb/>
current situation in American<lb/>
affairs. With some men and<lb/>
women looking at their second<lb/>
and third six-month deploy-<lb/>
ments to places such as Iraq<lb/>
and Afghanistan, traditional in-<lb/>
classroom learning is a great deal<lb/>
more difficult.<lb/>
The opportunity for ECU<lb/>
education is also available to<lb/>
dependents or family of the ser-<lb/>
viceman or woman.<lb/>
Fort Bragg is one of ECU'S<lb/>
biggest customers in the distance<lb/>
education program. With more<lb/>
than 70 percent of Fort Bragg's<lb/>
members deployed overseas, the<lb/>
program is a way of allowing<lb/>
servicemen and women a way to<lb/>
continue their studies.<lb/>
Currently, ECU is serving<lb/>
172 students that are considered<lb/>
military. Other colleges that are<lb/>
contributing to the distance<lb/>
education program are Campbell<lb/>
University, Central Texas Col-<lb/>
lege and UNC-Pembroke among<lb/>
others.<lb/>
ECU expects to enroll several<lb/>
hundred more men and women<lb/>
in uniform into the distance<lb/>
education program.<lb/>
Playing a pivotal role in<lb/>
higher enrollment rate is the<lb/>
BRAC, or Base Realignment and<lb/>
Closure. According to Duncan,<lb/>
N.C. gained a number of military<lb/>
people.<lb/>
"The impact on the Fayette-<lb/>
ville community will be in the<lb/>
neighborhood of 20,000, both<lb/>
military and civilian Duncan<lb/>
said.<lb/>
Other bases taking part in the<lb/>
program are Camp Lejeune and<lb/>
Seymour Johnson.<lb/>

State<lb/>
NC Eye Exams<lb/>
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Nearly a<lb/>
dozen local school boards sued<lb/>
the state Tuesday over a new law<lb/>
requiring comprehensive eye exams<lb/>
for children entering kindergarten,<lb/>
arguing it violates the U.S. constitution<lb/>
and the state constitution's mandate<lb/>
for free public education.<lb/>
Flanked by a pediatrician, eye doctor<lb/>
and others opposed to the exam,<lb/>
local schools representatives said<lb/>
the examinations, which cost from<lb/>
$65 to more than $120. are too<lb/>
expensive and unnecessary since<lb/>
children already must receive vision<lb/>
screenings before entering school.<lb/>
The law set aside $2 million to help<lb/>
parents pay for exams uncovered<lb/>
by Medicaid or other government<lb/>
programs.<lb/>
The exam would be conducted by<lb/>
an optometrist or ophthalmologist to<lb/>
check for seven different disorders. As<lb/>
justification for the requirement, Black,<lb/>
D-Mecklenburg, cited a National<lb/>
Institutes for Health study that found<lb/>
that vision problems weren't caught<lb/>
in at least 10 percent of children who<lb/>
received basic screenings.<lb/>
SUPCO store shooting<lb/>
COLUMBIA, SC. (AP) - A convicted<lb/>
murderer who was eligible to be<lb/>
resentenced when the U.S. Supreme<lb/>
Court outlawed capital punishment<lb/>
for youthful offenders can get less<lb/>
than life in prison, the state Supreme<lb/>
Court ruled Tuesday.<lb/>
Eric Dale Morgan was about two<lb/>
weeks shy of his 18th birthday when<lb/>
he shot and killed a Spartanburg<lb/>
convenience store owner in 2000.<lb/>
He was convicted and sentenced<lb/>
to die in March 2004. That sentence<lb/>
was invalidated last year when the<lb/>
U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the<lb/>
death penalty for juveniles was<lb/>
unconstitutional.<lb/>
The state argued that the only option<lb/>
was a life sentence without parole<lb/>
because the jury found armed robbery<lb/>
to be an "aggravating circumstance"<lb/>
in the case.<lb/>
"Whether the jury found certain<lb/>
aggravating circumstances<lb/>
at his sentencing proceeding is<lb/>
irrelevant because the discussion<lb/>
of aggravators arises only when the<lb/>
state seeks the death penalty, which<lb/>
the state cannot do in this case<lb/>

unanimous opinion.<lb/>

Tainted blood<lb/>
TORONTO (AP) - Three Canadian<lb/>
health officials, a U.S. pharmaceutical<lb/>
company and one of its senior<lb/>
American executives pleaded not<lb/>
guilty Tuesday to charges that<lb/>
their neglect allowed thousands of<lb/>
Canadians to contract HIV through<lb/>
tainted blood.<lb/>
After weeks of delay and initial fears<lb/>
that some charges would be thrown<lb/>
out, hemophiliacs who received the<lb/>
tainted blood and relatives of those<lb/>
too ill to come to court, or who have<lb/>
already died, were relieved when the<lb/>
trial finally got under way.<lb/>
The courtroom was filled with victims<lb/>
and family members of those who<lb/>
received the contaminated blood<lb/>
products from Bridgewater, N.J<lb/>
based Armour Pharmaceutical Co.<lb/>
One HIV-positive woman sat with<lb/>
her husband and two daughters, a<lb/>
toilet paper roll at her side as she<lb/>
repeatedly dabbed at her eyes and<lb/>
glared at the defendants.<lb/>
"I think the victims want to see<lb/>
justice done said James Kreppner,<lb/>

Car bomb In Baghdad fatal<lb/>
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A car bomb<lb/>
exploded Tuesday on a street packed<lb/>
with shoppers in a Shiite area of<lb/>
Baghdad, killing 22 people and<lb/>
wounding 28, police said. It was the<lb/>
deadliest bomb attack in the Iraqi<lb/>
capital in a month.<lb/>
At least eight other people were killed<lb/>
and more than 30 injured Tuesday in<lb/>
bombings and shootings elsewhere<lb/>
in Baghdad and in attacks on beauty<lb/>
parlors and liquor stores, symbols<lb/>
of Western influence, in Baqouba<lb/>
northeast of the capital.<lb/>
The car bombing occurred shortly<lb/>
before 5 p.m. in a Shiite corner of<lb/>
Dora, a predominantly Sunni Arab<lb/>
district of Baghdad and one of the<lb/>
most dangerous parts of the city,<lb/>
rocked almost daily by bombings,<lb/>
ambushes and assassinations.<lb/>
It was the deadliest bombing in<lb/>
Baghdad since Jan. 19.<lb/>

THURSDAY February 23, 2006<lb/>
Our View<lb/>
Pirate Baseball<lb/>
The ECU baseball team has gotten off to<lb/>
an impressive start in the 2006 season<lb/>
under first year coach Billy Godwin.<lb/>
The Pirates have series victories over<lb/>
Maryland and College of Charleston<lb/>
and an overall record of 5-2 thanks<lb/>
in large part to a solid pitching staff.<lb/>
Two years ago when the Pirates made<lb/>
a run to the College World Series, they<lb/>
boasted one of the most dynamic<lb/>
offenses in the country only to have<lb/>
pitching fail them with the game on<lb/>
the line.<lb/>
Now with a shored up staff that includes<lb/>
the likes of starters Dustin Sasser and<lb/>
T.J. Hose, who both have a 0.75 ERA in<lb/>
two starts each, along with an experi-<lb/>
enced bullpen, Godwin can comfort-<lb/>
ably send a number of hurlers to the<lb/>
mound in the clutch, something the<lb/>
Pirates arguably lacked in years past.<lb/>
That isn't to say the Pirates' offense<lb/>
is less than formidable. ECU is hitting<lb/>
over .300 as a team and while they<lb/>
may be absent home run threats up<lb/>
and down the lineup, the Pirates are<lb/>
talented enough to light up the score-<lb/>
board, as evidenced by a 19-5 rout<lb/>
against Duke on Tuesday.<lb/>
ECU has a nice blend of veteran<lb/>
leadership and youth as seniors Jay<lb/>
Mattox, Jake Smith and Adam Witter<lb/>
have been hot at the plate.<lb/>
Mattox leads the team with a .429<lb/>
batting average and Smith and Witter<lb/>
are hitting well over .300 with a homer<lb/>
each. Smith has a team high nine RBI.<lb/>
We're only weeks into the season, but<lb/>
so far it seems ECU is back on track to<lb/>
make a run deep into the post season<lb/>
with a complete squad, both offen-<lb/>
sively and defensively. They will face a<lb/>
true test of their talent with an upcom-<lb/>
ing road series against national power-<lb/>
house Cal. St. Fullerton March 10-12.<lb/>

System works in Haiti but U.S. doesn't like it<lb/>
Foreign election<lb/>
showcases hypocrisy of<lb/>
the Bush administration<lb/>
GARY MCCABE<lb/>
BITTER BOULEVARD<lb/>
In my mind, there are two<lb/>
kinds of countries that make up<lb/>
this world we live in: brand name<lb/>
countries and generic countries.<lb/>
The brand name countries of the<lb/>
world are pretty obvious. Let's just<lb/>
say that if the planet Earth were<lb/>
one giant clothing store, the brand<lb/>
name countries would be the<lb/>
clothes in the storefront window,<lb/>
showing those who walk past the<lb/>
very best the store has to offer.<lb/>
These countries are rich, power-<lb/>
ful and immensely successful.<lb/>
The Republic of Haiti is clearly<lb/>
the latter kind of country. To put<lb/>
it bluntly, if the United States is<lb/>
the Armani suit of the world,<lb/>
Haiti is little more than a soiled<lb/>
pair of purple sweatpants in a<lb/>
dumpster behind K-Mart.<lb/>
Destitute and rife with gang<lb/>
warfare, Haiti has been on the<lb/>
verge on anarchy for years.<lb/>
The past two years have been<lb/>
especially difficult, following<lb/>
a 2004 political coup d'etat<lb/>
which unseated Haiti's elected<lb/>
leader, President Jean-Bertrand<lb/>
Aristide.<lb/>
Although the rebellion was<lb/>
a clear attack on democracy,<lb/>
the Bush administration was<lb/>
ambiguous in their response,<lb/>
publicly denouncing the actions<lb/>
of the rebels (the Haitian elite)<lb/>
while somewhat suggesting that<lb/>
Aristide's removal may actually<lb/>
be the first steps toward stabil-<lb/>
ity in the nation. It should also<lb/>
be pointed out that the United<lb/>
States had no problem interject-<lb/>
ing itself into the rebellion that<lb/>
brought Aristide to power in<lb/>
1994.<lb/>
So as you can imagine, it's<lb/>
not often that good news actually<lb/>
comes out of what has become<lb/>
the most impoverished nation<lb/>
in the Western Hemisphere.<lb/>
However, when I opened the<lb/>
paper Feb. 10, that's exactly what<lb/>
I found.<lb/>
The good news was this:<lb/>
Haiti had just run presidential<lb/>
elections and early electoral<lb/>
results showed that candidate<lb/>
Rene Preval was poised to win<lb/>
the contest. The significance of<lb/>
Preval's impending win was tied<lb/>
to whom he represented, the<lb/>
nation's overwhelming major-<lb/>
ity of Haiti's 8.5 million people<lb/>
living in extreme poverty.<lb/>
Preval ran for office on a<lb/>
very ambitious platform, call-<lb/>
ing for public schools, increased<lb/>
foreign investments, the use of<lb/>
negotiations rather than force to<lb/>
end gang warfare and a complete<lb/>
overhaul of the nation's flawed<lb/>
government. In a magnanimous<lb/>
gesture, Preval even pledged to<lb/>
appoint a prime minister from<lb/>
whichever political party won<lb/>
control of Parliament in this year's<lb/>
elections knowing perfectly well<lb/>
that it would not be his own.<lb/>
On paper, Preval certainly<lb/>
seems to be the perfect leader<lb/>
for Haiti at this point in time. As<lb/>
President Bush might say, he's a<lb/>
"uniter not a "divider He has<lb/>
clear goals for the nation and if<lb/>
successful, Haiti could very well<lb/>
make some positive strides and<lb/>
eventually be in a position to crawl<lb/>
out of that metaphorical dumpster<lb/>
behind K-Mart. So if this is such a<lb/>
positive event for Haiti, why has<lb/>
the United States done everything<lb/>
in its power to keep Preval from<lb/>
actually taking office?<lb/>
I won't go so far as to say that<lb/>
the United States was responsible<lb/>
for Aristide's removal in 2004<lb/>
- enough Haitians have said it<lb/>
that it's almost unnecessary.<lb/>
Besides, that's all in the past. It's<lb/>
quite clear that the traditional<lb/>
Haitian elite who took control<lb/>
in 2004 - later put under the<lb/>
control of a U.Sinstalled interim<lb/>
government - attempted to rig<lb/>
this election.<lb/>
I'm not just speculating either.<lb/>
Patrick Fequiere, a member of<lb/>
Haiti's election council, said<lb/>
it himself. When Preval came<lb/>
up short of the 50 percent vote<lb/>
needed for an instant victory, the<lb/>
council voted him in anyway to<lb/>
avoid the backlash that would<lb/>
surely come from a subsequent<lb/>
run-off, which could very well<lb/>
rob Preval of his victory.<lb/>
"We had to do something<lb/>
said Fequiere. "We could have<lb/>
just told Preval he got 48.76 per-<lb/>
cent, but when he contests the<lb/>
results, all of this mess is going<lb/>
to come out - the blank votes, the<lb/>
missing votes<lb/>
Even after his confirmation,<lb/>
President Bush and his adminis-<lb/>
tration are insisting that Preval<lb/>
share power with the traditional<lb/>
elite after begrudgingly accepting<lb/>
him as Haiti's presidential-elect.<lb/>
Share power? If that's the way the<lb/>
world is supposed to handle dis-<lb/>
puted elections, Al Gore would be<lb/>
co-president right now and we'd<lb/>
probably all be better off.<lb/>
So to answer my earlier ques-<lb/>
tion, the United States govern-<lb/>
ment doesn't want Preval in<lb/>
office simply because the United<lb/>
States is better off having Hai-<lb/>
tians starving to death and kill-<lb/>
ing each other. What does the<lb/>
United States have to gain from a<lb/>
strong, independent Haiti when a<lb/>
country run by like-minded elites<lb/>
is so much easier to manipulate?<lb/>
They don't care about Haiti<lb/>
or any other country, for that<lb/>
matter.<lb/>
Maybe if the Bush admin-<lb/>
istration were up front about<lb/>
that attitude, it would be a bit<lb/>
easier to swallow. Instead, our<lb/>
government runs around the<lb/>
world pretending to be this<lb/>
high-minded nation that wants<lb/>
to "liberate the oppressed" and<lb/>
"spread democracy" - only we've<lb/>
seen too many times what hap-<lb/>
pens to those oppressed peoples<lb/>
when they democratically elect<lb/>
someone who doesn't suit the<lb/>
U.S. government's agenda.<lb/>
The United States have been<lb/>
telling the Palestinians to con-<lb/>
duct democratic elections for<lb/>
years now. Earlier this year,<lb/>
the Palestinians held the elec-<lb/>
tions and voted in candidates<lb/>
representing the terrorist group<lb/>
Hamas.<lb/>
How do you think President<lb/>
Bush felt the day after those elec-<lb/>
tions? Do you honestly believe<lb/>
he was sitting the Oval Office<lb/>
thinking, "I sure am glad we<lb/>
brought democracy to the Pal-<lb/>
estinians Or do you think he's<lb/>
on the phone to Cheney asking,<lb/>
"What the hell are we going to<lb/>
do about this?"<lb/>
The United States is obviously<lb/>
one brand name country that<lb/>
will not be satisfied until they<lb/>
have a monopoly on the entire<lb/>
world and seemingly will do<lb/>
anything to reach that end, But<lb/>
is that such a good thing?<lb/>
In My Opinion<lb/>
(KRT) If unmarried women<lb/>
turned out in force for elections,<lb/>
they could shape the results. But<lb/>
they don't.<lb/>
It's a tantalizing problem,<lb/>
especially for Democrats, whom<lb/>
unmarried women tend to favor.<lb/>
If the 20 million who didn't<lb/>
vote in 2004 had turned out,<lb/>
John Kerry would be in the<lb/>
White House, based on fig-<lb/>
ures released Wednesday by a<lb/>
liberal get-out-the-vote group<lb/>
that specializes in women. If<lb/>
they'd even turned out at the<lb/>
same rate as married women,<lb/>
Kerry probably would've won.<lb/>
Unmarried women are "by far<lb/>
the most Democratic base, except<lb/>
for African-Americans said Dem-<lb/>
ocratic pollster Stanley Green-<lb/>
berg, the chief executive officer<lb/>
of Greenberg Quinlan Rosner,<lb/>
which conducted the survey. "We<lb/>
ought to be looking at this" as a<lb/>
political opportunity, he added.<lb/>
About 54 million women in<lb/>
America aren't married, nearly<lb/>
half of all voting-age women,<lb/>
according to Greenberg. His<lb/>
survey, sponsored by the "Wom-<lb/>
en's Voices. Women Vote. Action<lb/>
Fund explored the reasons that<lb/>
20 million single women elected<lb/>
not to vote in 2004.<lb/>
Greenberg concluded from<lb/>
a survey of 1,509 unmarried<lb/>
women that they:<lb/>
-Are more likely than unmar-<lb/>
ried men to think that politics is<lb/>
too complicated to understand.<lb/>
-Doubt that their votes would<lb/>
make a difference.<lb/>
-Worry most about the war<lb/>
in Iraq, followed by health care,<lb/>
then the economy and jobs.<lb/>
-Earn much less than men or<lb/>
married women. Half of unmar-<lb/>
ried women are in households<lb/>
that earn less than $30,000 a<lb/>
year, about twice the fraction of<lb/>
married women.<lb/>
-Disapprove of President Bush<lb/>
by a 2-to-l ratio.<lb/>
-Move more often than mar-<lb/>
ried women and are less likely to<lb/>
own their homes.<lb/>
-Ignore mainstream media, so<lb/>
they're harder to reach through<lb/>
TV ads.<lb/>
-Respond better to political<lb/>
ads that are framed in terms of<lb/>
issues and facts than to negative<lb/>
ads or ads that stress political<lb/>
party identity.<lb/>
"They just sort of feel unin-<lb/>
formed and not politically pow-<lb/>
erful said Greenberg's daughter,<lb/>
Anna, the vice president of<lb/>
Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and a<lb/>
researcher for the study. "So they<lb/>
don't want to participate<lb/>
The ranks of unmarried<lb/>
women are growing faster than<lb/>
most other groups because women<lb/>
today wait longer before marry-<lb/>
ing for the first time and remain<lb/>
unmarried longer after divorce.<lb/>
They also are more likely to live<lb/>
with their partners before marry-<lb/>
ing and to live with them longer.<lb/>
African-American women<lb/>
often are unmarried partly<lb/>
because they find it difficult to<lb/>
marry outside their race. Due to<lb/>
high mortality and incarceration<lb/>
rates, there are 86 African-Ameri-<lb/>
can men for every 100 women,<lb/>
said Avis Jones-DeWeever, a<lb/>
researcher for the Institute for<lb/>
Women's Policy Research, a<lb/>
nonprofit that studies income<lb/>
security for women.<lb/>
Low wages for single women<lb/>
make them feel marginalized, she<lb/>
added. "Unmarried wome'n don't<lb/>
vote because the government<lb/>
doesn't pay attention to them<lb/>
Stanley Greenberg said the<lb/>
findings snowed the potential for<lb/>
recruiting unmarried women to<lb/>
vote. To get through to a group<lb/>
that shuns mainstream media,<lb/>
he suggested using cell phones,<lb/>
e-mails and door-to-door cam-<lb/>
paigns, especially in swing states<lb/>
or districts in which the vote is<lb/>
likely to be close.<lb/>
Too many of you people try to be Dr. Phil. You<lb/>
should just settle your disputes with a fight instead<lb/>
of arguing back and forth through Pirate Rant.<lb/>
lack Johnson did the Curious George soundtrack.<lb/>
That rocks so much! We should get him to come<lb/>
play here! Forget Kanye!<lb/>
OMG! This is college, not kindergarten! The<lb/>
barely there "snow" was not an adverse weather<lb/>
condition. It was a minor inconvenience maybe.<lb/>
If you want to know the weather, get up five<lb/>
minutes early and watch the Weather Channel,<lb/>
local news or (dare I say it?) stick your head<lb/>
outside. If it's cold or snow is on the ground,<lb/>
wear appropriate clothing. Do not depend on<lb/>
ECU or anyone else to have to baby-sit you and<lb/>
tell you what it's like outside! Grow up. If there<lb/>
was considerable accumulation, ECU would<lb/>
have cancelled classes because of hazardous<lb/>
j conditions, which was not the case.<lb/>
Winter: If you're not going to snow and close<lb/>
1 things, then you need to leave!<lb/>
; To the person who ranted about "Fraggle Rock<lb/>
yes, "Fraggle Rock" was a great show indeed. Kind<lb/>
of like Coldstone is great, but only in puppet form.<lb/>
Vixen, girl, you need some serious help. Please<lb/>
stop wasting TEC space to cry and moan about<lb/>
breaking up. You did it because you wanted to<lb/>
dive it up and party, etc. Fate? Please. That's just<lb/>
your way of trying to justify your stupidity.<lb/>
My roommate is a hippie and yeah, all the ste-<lb/>
reotypes are true.<lb/>
My friend (probably in third trimester) has been<lb/>
craving a pastrami sandwich. Why is it so hard for<lb/>
a pregnant woman to get the sandwich she craves?<lb/>
Shhh! Don't blow our cover! We Southerners<lb/>
aren't idiots you know. A little snow, get out of<lb/>
school and off work! What's so wrong with that?<lb/>
We do the same thing with hurricanes. (Note:<lb/>
Earlier this year, we've had rain showers worse<lb/>
I than that thing!) We know what we're doing!<lb/>
i Don't you hate it when people support sports<lb/>
j teams from a city that they nave absolutely no<lb/>
i connection to? I don't care if you hate it or not.<lb/>
I hate it, and I'm telling you.<lb/>
The "loan a book" program as you call it is one<lb/>
little "perk" for staff and faculty and their kids<lb/>
attending ECU. Give us state employees a break!<lb/>
Have you seen our paychecks?<lb/>
Sucking up to the professor is the best thing I<lb/>
have going for me in one of my classes. I mean,<lb/>
doing it last semester got me an A when every-<lb/>
one else got Bs and Cs. Why stop now?<lb/>
To the guy in the yelloworange hoodie singing<lb/>
"Baby ILove Your Way" in Wright on Wednes-<lb/>
day around 10 a.m you are beautiful. That is<lb/>
my favorite song and you made shopping for a<lb/>
bagel and a diet Pepsi so enjoyable. Hope to see<lb/>
you in there again soon!<lb/>
We fired Bill Herrion for this? Good talent <lb/>
horrible coaching ECU Basketball.<lb/>
It's not North Carolina that smells bad, it's just<lb/>
you.<lb/>
About the "Our Confederate Dead" monument:<lb/>
I've grown up in Greenville, and my family has<lb/>
always been southern. Almost all the men in my<lb/>
family at the time if the Civil War fought for the<lb/>
Confederacy, and many died. That statue means<lb/>
a lot to me. And remember, the winners get to<lb/>
write the history books! The Civil War was not<lb/>
about slavery. The issue of slavery was kind of the<lb/>
popularity booster toward the end of the war.<lb/>
Those men gave their lives for freedom.<lb/>
Some of us do feel an enormous pressure to go<lb/>
Greek. I hate Greek life and I've almost joined<lb/>
two frats this semester. Peer pressure exists in<lb/>
college too!<lb/>
Why does the brewed coffee at Java City taste<lb/>
like bitter swill? Seriously, my cat can Drew a<lb/>
better cup of coffee!<lb/>
I pulled up to the house about seven or eight<lb/>
and I yelled to the cabbie "Yo, homes, smell<lb/>
'ya lata Looked at my kingdom, I was finally<lb/>
there, to sit on my throne, as the prince of Bel-<lb/>
Air. Sorry, I just needed to let that out.<lb/>
So my sorority says it's all about sisterhood, but<lb/>
then they go around talking about each other<lb/>
every chance they get? I just don't understand.<lb/>
What happened to the gentlemen at ECU? I<lb/>
would for once just love to go out on a date and<lb/>
have a guy treat me like I am a princess.<lb/>
My friend thinks he was a cockroach in another<lb/>
life and earlier today I killed a cockroach that<lb/>
was in our pantry, and he's giving me the "silent<lb/>
treatment because he thinks that I killed his<lb/>
great aunt.<lb/>
If you are a guy out there and have anything at<lb/>
all going on with a special lady friend, quit play-<lb/>
ing games, grow some balls and let her know<lb/>
how you feel or at least what you want out of it<lb/>
- even if you are just in it for getting some At<lb/>
least tell her so she doesn't waste her time.<lb/>
To my roommate who obviously doesn't realize<lb/>
the reason why our heating bill is so high: it is<lb/>
because of you making the thermostat cooler<lb/>
when you "get hot at night" or making it warmer<lb/>
because your little precious "feet are cold Take<lb/>
off your sleep pants or put on some socks!<lb/>
How can people sleep with their socks on?<lb/>
Is it normal to be 20 years old and have a few<lb/>
stray grey hairs and already have extremely<lb/>
wrinkled skin?<lb/>
Why are there girls working out in the Rec<lb/>
Center with makeup on? I am definitely not<lb/>
going to be interested when I look at your sweaty<lb/>
towel with mascara and foundation all over it.<lb/>

NAHB from page A1<lb/>
Teams are comprised of<lb/>
dedicated students and faculty<lb/>
coaches. Each team is given<lb/>
plans, specifications, HOA doc-<lb/>
uments and other pertinent<lb/>
documents from a real-world<lb/>
project that has been recently<lb/>
completed or is under construc-<lb/>
tion.<lb/>
Over approximately six weeks,<lb/>
teams prepare written proposal<lb/>
packages that are submitted to<lb/>
a panel of construction industry<lb/>
judges. The proposal is com-<lb/>
prised of estimates, schedules,<lb/>
financials, marketing research,<lb/>
marketing plans and many other<lb/>
components.<lb/>
The written proposal com-<lb/>
prises 80 percent of each team's<lb/>
score. The remaining 20 percent<lb/>
comes from the team's oral pre-<lb/>
sentation at the International<lb/>
Builders Show.<lb/>
At the presentation portion<lb/>
of the competition each team is<lb/>
allowed to present for IS minutes.<lb/>
Then the judges question the<lb/>
team members for 10 minutes.<lb/>
Each team member is expected<lb/>
to be fully knowledgeable of all<lb/>
aspects of the project and the<lb/>
proposal.<lb/>
After the conclusion of team<lb/>
presentations, the NAHB Student<lb/>
Chapters Awards Ceremony is<lb/>
held. This is when teams learn<lb/>
the results of a near six-month<lb/>
effort. Following the ceremony,<lb/>
the teams are treated to the<lb/>
NAHB Student Chapters Awards<lb/>
Reception.<lb/>
"Being in the competition,<lb/>
I feel like I received a better<lb/>
understanding of how everything<lb/>
comes together to complete a land<lb/>
acquisition package said Aubrey<lb/>
B. Taylor, a 2005 team member<lb/>
and ECU graduate of May 2005.<lb/>
"Everything from market-<lb/>
ing research to estimating land<lb/>
development and construction<lb/>
r<lb/>
costs to creating an exit strategy<lb/>
and maintaining even flow.<lb/>
Having to participate in all the<lb/>
tasks involved, in the competi-<lb/>
tion helped to tie all my classes<lb/>
from school together into one<lb/>
'capstone' course. 1 also received<lb/>
a better understanding of how<lb/>
the land development process<lb/>
works<lb/>
Taylor is now a Field Manager<lb/>
for Centex Homes in their Myrtle<lb/>
Beach Division.<lb/>
Participation in the<lb/>
competition is an excellent<lb/>
avenue for students to obtain<lb/>
internships and jobs from<lb/>
industry leading residential con-<lb/>
struction companies. There is a<lb/>
job fair held in conjunction with<lb/>
the International Builders Show.<lb/>
Some students receive invita-<lb/>
tions to exclusive events held by<lb/>
employers. Many students make<lb/>
contacts that lead to future job<lb/>
offers, while others leave the job<lb/>
fair with firm offers.<lb/>
This year, the team is<lb/>
comprised of 10 students<lb/>
representing a cross-section of<lb/>
its Construction Management<lb/>
student body. This cross-section<lb/>
reflects thediversity of thecampus<lb/>
and the workplace. Some are tra-<lb/>
ditional students, while others are<lb/>
non-traditional students with job<lb/>
experience who are formalizing<lb/>
their education or retraining<lb/>
to change careers after being<lb/>
displaced.<lb/>
The 2006 ECU Competition<lb/>
Team included Steven Beatty,<lb/>

Tia Hudson, Grant Lockhart,<lb/>
John "Baxter" Matthews, Jeremy<lb/>

Andrew Rowley and Scott Seaman.<lb/>
The 2006 Presentation Team<lb/>
members were Steven Beatty,<lb/>
Raymond Garris, Matthew Hill,<lb/>
Jeremy Morrison, John Rappo-<lb/>
port and Andrew Rowley. Donna<lb/>
Hollar, a member of the faculty of<lb/>
the Department of Construction<lb/>
Management, functions as the<lb/>
Competition Team Coach.<lb/>
There are nearly 600 stu-<lb/>
dents enrolled in Construction<lb/>
Management. These students<lb/>
are working to obtain a Bach-<lb/>
elor of Science in Construction<lb/>
Management. Many also obtain<lb/>
a minor in Business Admin-<lb/>
istration. The degree empha-<lb/>
sizes commercial and general<lb/>
construction. However, about<lb/>
40 percent of ECU's graduates<lb/>
enter the residential construc-<lb/>
tion sector.<lb/>
The trend toward residen-<lb/>
tial construction is increas-<lb/>
ing. Because of this, the<lb/>
department is in the process of<lb/>
adding a residential construc-<lb/>
tion track to its curriculum. The<lb/>
department also intends to add<lb/>
a heavy construction track in<lb/>
the future.<lb/>
The 2006 team wishes to<lb/>
acknowledge the support of many<lb/>
individuals and companies who<lb/>
assisted in making participation<lb/>
possible.<lb/>
Special recognition goes<lb/>
to our financial sponsors: East<lb/>
Carolina Construction Associa-<lb/>

and Professional Construction<lb/>
Estimators Association Coastal<lb/>

If you are seeking some highly<lb/>

Campus Confessions:<lb/>
I have mastered the art of sleeping<lb/>
with my eyes open, so if you see me<lb/>
staring Into space during class dont<lb/>
bother me, I'm sleeping.<lb/>
I've taken two exams this semester<lb/>
when I was still a little drunk from the<lb/>
night before, and I did better on both<lb/>
of them than any others.<lb/>
Is it bad that I could care less about<lb/>
the stupid winter Olympics?<lb/>
I like to smell the underside of my nail<lb/>
because it always smells weird if my<lb/>
nail is long.<lb/>
I hate my roommate because he is<lb/>
part of my race and he is a self-hater.<lb/>
When my roommate goes home for<lb/>
the weekend, I wear her clothes and<lb/>
hang them back in her closet without<lb/>
washing them.<lb/>
I dream about making out with my<lb/>
lab partner on one of the lab tables.<lb/>
He's kind of dorky, but in a sexy Clark<lb/>
KentSuperman sort of way.<lb/>
I have been having a sexual<lb/>
relationship with an instructor.<lb/>
I make a big deal about being lactose<lb/>
intolerant, but I am not. I grew out of<lb/>
that allergy a decade ago.<lb/>
I'd like to mandate that everyone who<lb/>
still thinks It's funny to scream out<lb/>
trademark UP Jon phrases should<lb/>
have steel plates bolted to their<lb/>
mouth, Beetlejuice style. Seriously,<lb/>
the horse is dead.<lb/>
I am terribly ashamed to take a<lb/>
poo in a public bathroom. I mean,<lb/>
the toilets are there, but the entire<lb/>
nature of handling your business<lb/>
makes it somewhat undesirable to<lb/>
expose passing strangers to. After<lb/>
all, if you happen to venture Into a<lb/>
public bathroom, you might know<lb/>
what someone's fecal matter smells<lb/>
like before you even know their name.<lb/>
That's just not right.<lb/>
I am totally incapable of seeing the<lb/>
difference between Kentucky and<lb/>
Tennessee. They're the same state,<lb/>
right?<lb/>
I signed the roll for my roommate in<lb/>
ethics class.<lb/>
I go the men's restroom when the line<lb/>
is too long for the girls' restroom.<lb/>

Recipe:<lb/>
Chocolate Rlcotta Pie<lb/>
1 12 cups all-purpose flour<lb/>
2 tablespoons cornmeal<lb/>
34 cup pine nuts, plus 34 cup,<lb/>
toasted (about 8 ounces in total)<lb/>
14 cup sugar, plus 34 cup<lb/>
Pinch salt<lb/>
1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter,<lb/>
melted and cooled slightly<lb/>
12 cup water<lb/>
8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips<lb/>
(about 1 13 cups)<lb/>
34 cup ricotta cheese<lb/>
3 ounces cream cheese, at room<lb/>
temperature<lb/>
1 large egg<lb/>
3 large egg yolks<lb/>
Blend the flour, cornmeal, 34 cup<lb/>
pine nuts, 14 cup sugar and salt in<lb/>
a food processor until finely ground.<lb/>
Add the butter and pulse, just until<lb/>
the dough forms. Press the dough<lb/>
over the bottom and about 2 inches<lb/>
up the sides of an 11-inch-diameter<lb/>
tart pan with a removable bottom.<lb/>
Refrigerate until the dough is firm,<lb/>
about 30 minutes.<lb/>
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.<lb/>
Line the tart dough with aluminum<lb/>
foil and fill with pie weights or dried<lb/>
beans. Bake the tart shell In the lower<lb/>
third of the oven until just set, about<lb/>
25 minutes. Carefully remove the foil<lb/>
and pie weights. Bake the shell until<lb/>
golden, about 10 minutes longer. Cool<lb/>
completely.<lb/>
Combine the remaining 34 cup of<lb/>
sugar with 12 cup water in a small<lb/>
saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring until<lb/>
the sugar dissolves. Cool the sugar<lb/>
syrup slightly.<lb/>
In a double boiler, melt the chocolate<lb/>
over very softly simmering water.<lb/>
Pulse the ricotta cheese and cream<lb/>
cheese in a food processor until<lb/>
smooth. Add the egg and egg yolks,<lb/>
one at a time, and process until<lb/>
smooth. Add the melted chocolate<lb/>
and process until combined. With the<lb/>
machine running, add the sugar syrup<lb/>
in a thin steady stream and process<lb/>
until smooth.<lb/>
Pour the custard into the tart shell<lb/>
and bake until the filling is almost set,<lb/>
about 30 minutes or until the custard<lb/>
has set. Scatter the remaining 34<lb/>
cup toasted pine nuts on top of the<lb/>
filling. Let the tart cool completely<lb/>
before serving.<lb/>
The tart can be wrapped in plastic<lb/>
and refrigerated for up to three days.<lb/>
Return the tart to room temperature<lb/>
before serving.<lb/>
'Date Movie' proves to be just that<lb/>
Collection of parodies is<lb/>
sure to please<lb/>
SCOTTY WILLIAMS<lb/>
SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
First off, let's all thank the<lb/>
Wayans brothers for bringing<lb/>
us Scary Movie, the franchise<lb/>
that has so far squeezed out<lb/>
three movies worth of poking<lb/>
fun. Actually, Scary Movie has<lb/>
a fourth installment in post<lb/>
production. Until recently, how-<lb/>
ever, this franchise was thenly<lb/>
notable dip into the spoof pool,<lb/>
an aberration in Hollywood.<lb/>
Now we might have a justifi-<lb/>
able genre on our hands.<lb/>
Date Movie is a spoof of epic<lb/>
proportions. It's clear from the<lb/>
trailer that you're coming to see<lb/>
a movie that makes fun of other<lb/>
current movies. The pleasant<lb/>
surprise of this movie is that<lb/>
even though you enter expect-<lb/>
ing low-brow toilet humor, you<lb/>
get something much more.<lb/>
The draw of spoof-type<lb/>
movies is that they make fun of<lb/>
things with the sort of venom<lb/>
that you would expect to see on<lb/>
the Internet (in the 18-plus cat-<lb/>
egory of course). For a perfect<lb/>
example of the draw, check out<lb/>
the TV show "Family Guy<lb/>
Date Movie has this sort of<lb/>
draw written all over it. Noth-<lb/>
ing is safe from the scripted ire<lb/>
of this movie, from movies to<lb/>
current events to animals?<lb/>
The movie is a parade of laughs<lb/>
from start to finish.<lb/>
The theme of this movie<lb/>
is somewhat generic for the<lb/>
romantic comedy - a woman<lb/>
deeply desires romance and her<lb/>
"prince charming" and seeks to<lb/>
find a man who will see past a<lb/>
few imperfections.<lb/>
There are a few obstacles<lb/>
along the way, and these obsta-<lb/>
cles themselves are the com-<lb/>
bined plots of a few popular date<lb/>
movies like a wacky family (a la<lb/>
My Big Fat Greek Wedding) or neu-<lb/>
rotic parents (Meet the Parents,<lb/>
you got it). Through the course<lb/>
of the movie, the happy couple<lb/>
traverses these obstacles to end<lb/>
up together, happily ever after.<lb/>
The part of this movie you<lb/>
will enjoy is that you come to see<lb/>
current spoofing, but if you're a<lb/>
little older, you will appreciate<lb/>
the spoofing of movies like Pretty<lb/>
Woman. You will be grossed out<lb/>
and it will make you laugh, but<lb/>
you'll also notice some visual<lb/>
humor and higher-order jokes.<lb/>
They're in the movie; you've just<lb/>
got to look for them.<lb/>
I will comment on one prob-<lb/>
lem with this movie. There's a<lb/>
scene where the whole family is<lb/>
at dinner and the humor seems<lb/>
to be dragging. The whole audi-<lb/>
In a dangerous venue, a bridal shop, Julia (Alyson Hannigan) and Andy (Sophie Monk) spoof 'Kill Bill<lb/>
ence is waiting for their next<lb/>
roll moment, the next thing<lb/>
that's going to put them in the<lb/>
aisles in stitches, and what do<lb/>
we get? LIT Jon. The hilarity of<lb/>
the movie at this juncture has<lb/>
been put in the hands of a man<lb/>
who can't put a whole sentence<lb/>
together and whose comedic<lb/>
draw has been exhausted, over-<lb/>
played and beaten to death for<lb/>
months. (Yes, this is a note<lb/>
to all who want to be funny,<lb/>
"yeaaaaaaah and "whaaaaaat!?"<lb/>
just aren't funny anymore. Drop<lb/>
it and let it die.)<lb/>
Other than that, I must say<lb/>
this movie is so funny and is so<lb/>
many different kinds of funny<lb/>
that it's a clinic in laughter.<lb/>
You'd have to take a pencil and<lb/>
paper to the movie with you to<lb/>
ECU student: Her "American Idol" story<lb/>
Sitting down with<lb/>
Jennifer Sieminski<lb/>
KRISTIN MURNANE<lb/>
ASSISTANT FEATURES EDITOR<lb/>
Jennifer Sieminski used to be<lb/>
your typical ECU student. This<lb/>
blonde-haired New Jersey native<lb/>
is a Communication major and<lb/>
describes herself as a "normal<lb/>
kid But there is something<lb/>
not so normal about this girl,<lb/>
something that the majority of<lb/>
us Pirates will never experience.<lb/>
Sieminski was recently on the<lb/>
number one rated television<lb/>
show "American Idol After a<lb/>
stellar audition at Solider Field in<lb/>
Chicago, Sieminski was invited<lb/>
to travel across the country to<lb/>
the show's Hollywood auditions,<lb/>
taking the next step to "Idol"<lb/>
fame. This is her story.<lb/>
TEC: First, can you take us<lb/>
through the audition process?<lb/>
Sieminski: I first auditioned<lb/>
at Soldier Field. I think the<lb/>
final head count was something<lb/>
around 15,000. Everybody got<lb/>
a ticket when you entered and<lb/>
you had an assigned seat, so you<lb/>
could leave the stadium, but<lb/>
there were people who didn't<lb/>
have money for a hotel overnight.<lb/>
They stayed in the stadium, out-<lb/>
doors, for two days; they had 12<lb/>
tents on the field with lower level<lb/>
producers. They funnel us down<lb/>
and we sing in groups of four<lb/>
and we go before these judges.<lb/>
I ended up singing "Something<lb/>
to Talk About" by Bonnie Rait<lb/>
and the producers liked it and<lb/>
they said "Can you sing another<lb/>
song?" and I said "sure so I sang<lb/>
"Bless the Broken Road" by Rascal<lb/>
Flatts. I was the only one in my<lb/>
group to go through. I was prob-<lb/>
ably only like the 40th person<lb/>
to get through that day. So I was<lb/>
pretty psyched because I knew<lb/>
that the next audition was the<lb/>
B<lb/>

-H iB lL H<lb/>

Jennifer Sieminski holds her 'Golden Ticket' to the next round.<lb/>
most important. It was in front<lb/>
of the executive producers, Ken<lb/>
Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe. This<lb/>
is where they decide who they<lb/>
want in their top 24. 1 didn't<lb/>
know that at the time, but now<lb/>
I know it, so I went and I waited<lb/>
for hours for these producers<lb/>
and they made us memorize that<lb/>
"Lady Marmalade" song because<lb/>
that was our city's song.<lb/>
TEC: That leads me into another<lb/>
question. I've read online about<lb/>
how you and a few other people<lb/>
had talked about how everything<lb/>
was edited too much and nothing<lb/>
was how it seemed on TV, and<lb/>
that the judges (Randy, Paula and<lb/>
Simon) didn't really see everyone.<lb/>
Is that true?<lb/>
Sieminski: Yes, that's partly<lb/>
true. When we went to the execu-<lb/>
tive producers, only 300 people<lb/>
from the 15,000 got to see them,<lb/>
and I'd say about 200 of them<lb/>
were genuinely bad. The produc-<lb/>
ers know the difference between<lb/>
people who are trying to fake it<lb/>
and people who genuinely think<lb/>
that they are God's great gift. It's<lb/>
sad, because I witnessed this. I<lb/>
tried to teach these kids "Lady<lb/>
Marmalade" and 1 heard them<lb/>
sing. The whole time I was just<lb/>
thinking "these are those people<lb/>
that they're going to parade on<lb/>
TV Funny thing was, Crazy<lb/>
Dave, 1 taught him the song<lb/>
and I'm like "Oh my God, this<lb/>
guy is so bad 1 felt so bad for<lb/>
him. They didn't ask me to sing<lb/>
"Lady Marmalade" because, I then<lb/>
realized, they only had the bad<lb/>
people sing it.<lb/>
TEC: So how did your audition<lb/>
with Simon, Paula and Randy go?<lb/>
Sieminski: Simon was so nice to<lb/>
me. 1 was very surprised. He said<lb/>
"I love you. You're a natural. You<lb/>
know what you want; you know<lb/>
what you're doing. So it's a defi-<lb/>
nite 'yes' for me Paula was like<lb/>
"yeah, great tone but she doesn't<lb/>
like girls, as we all know. So I<lb/>
didn't really pay attention to her.<lb/>
It was actually Randy who didn't<lb/>
like me. He was like "yeah, that<lb/>
was good dawg; it didn't blow<lb/>
me away, but good audition<lb/>
They were unanimous on send-<lb/>
ing me through, so I was excited.<lb/>
TEC: Well then, can you walk<lb/>
us through the Hollywood audi-<lb/>
tions?<lb/>
Sieminski: I got there and the<lb/>
first night we had an orientation<lb/>
where we were told that we can't<lb/>
have personal web pages and we<lb/>
can't have stuff about us online<lb/>
singing. You can't do this, you<lb/>
can't do that. Anyway, they had<lb/>
given us two weeks in between<lb/>
the Chicago audition and Hol-<lb/>
lywood, and we had a list of 12<lb/>
songs to pick from for the first<lb/>
round. I was thrilled because<lb/>
"Bless the Broken Road" was on<lb/>
there, so 1 didn't have to learn<lb/>
a new song so I just wanted<lb/>
to stick with what 1 knew. I was<lb/>
going to be safe.<lb/>
Our calls were at 7:30 in the<lb/>
morning. The first day, they<lb/>
had group one audition, which<lb/>
was Las Vegas auditions, Austin<lb/>
auditions. I was thrilled I wasn't<lb/>
on day one. I had a day to relax.<lb/>
So we went on a field trip and<lb/>
we went to the Hollywood Bowl,<lb/>
the Santa Monica Pier, the Hol-<lb/>
lywood Walk of Fame and the<lb/>
Kodak Theatre, where the finale<lb/>
is held. When I auditioned, my<lb/>
number was 72 and there were 75<lb/>
people auditioning that day, so I<lb/>
was at the very end and luckily,<lb/>
I moved on from that point.<lb/>
So here's where things start to fall<lb/>
apart. Auditions ended that day<lb/>
around 11:30 p.m. and we were<lb/>
exhausted. I just wanted to go to<lb/>
sleep, but no we have to get<lb/>
into groups of three or four. My<lb/>
group consisted of myself, the<lb/>
oh-so-humble Katherine McPhee<lb/>
and Crystal Stark. We picked "I<lb/>
Can't Help Myself" (sugarpie<lb/>
honeybunch), and we picked it<lb/>
because it had easy words and we<lb/>
knew the melody. It's now 11:30<lb/>

discusses tea, choirs<lb/>

JOHN BOSCO<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
For those out of the loop, the<lb/>
Fiery Furnaces are the brother<lb/>
sister duo of Matt and Eleanor<lb/>
Friedberger. It wouldn't be a<lb/>
stretch to say they're one of the<lb/>
most critically acclaimed and<lb/>
highly praised rock bands play-<lb/>
ing today. Last year, their two<lb/>
releases, EP and Rehearsing My<lb/>
Choir, made them the only art-<lb/>
ists on the College Music journal's<lb/>
year-end chart with multiple<lb/>
records, at numbers 22 and 191,<lb/>
respectively.<lb/>
With two red cats stamped<lb/>
on my hands (the mark of being<lb/>
under 21 at the Cat's Cradle), a<lb/>
digital camera and a spot to sit<lb/>
close to the stage against a graf-<lb/>
fiti-tagged wall, I was ready for<lb/>
the show to start.<lb/>
Eleanor Friedberger, the main<lb/>
vocalist, showed up on stage in an<lb/>
all white outfit with a very ener-<lb/>
Band members playing at Cat's Cradle on Saturday, Feb. 13.<lb/>
getic start to the show. The man<lb/>
behind the music, Matt Fried-<lb/>
berger, was playing only guitar<lb/>
this time around (no keyboards<lb/>
like on the albums), and a bass-<lb/>
ist and drummer who were both<lb/>
very impressive backed them.<lb/>
The mood was established<lb/>
early with the familiar tune<lb/>
"Asthma Attack" and an impres-<lb/>
sive up tempo version of "Straight<lb/>
Street" before diving into songs<lb/>
from their newest record, Rehears-<lb/>
ing My Choir.<lb/>
It was in those songs that the<lb/>
Furnaces were most remarkable.<lb/>
Album versions of the songs fea-<lb/>
ture their grandmother on vocals<lb/>
alongside Eleanor and are accom-<lb/>
panied by pianos and synthesiz-<lb/>
ers; live, however, the mood was<lb/>
much more rock 'n' roll.<lb/>
Matt showcased a bluesrock<lb/>
guitar approach that has been<lb/>
relatively sparse since their<lb/>
first release, Gallowsbird's Bark.<lb/>
Guitar solos were thrown left<lb/>
and right, and rhythmically, the<lb/>
beats were tight and exciting.<lb/>
Eleanor's vocals were virtually<lb/>
flawless and her delivery of<lb/>
lines like, "Zap-Zapped by the<lb/>
zombie in the two-door Dodge"<lb/>
were a treat to watch. The crowd<lb/>
seemed to be very into it and<lb/>
the atmosphere was attentive<lb/>
yet relaxed. Overall, the set was<lb/>
extraordinary and the encore<lb/>
was wonderful.<lb/>
While the show wasn't the<lb/>
pyrotechnic phenomenon that<lb/>
is a Kiss show, it wasn't sup-<lb/>
posed to be. They proved that<lb/>
they have even more depth than<lb/>
their albums show and bring<lb/>
something more to the table<lb/>
live than just carbon copies of<lb/>
their songs. Luckily, I was able<lb/>
to talk to Matt Friedberger on<lb/>

Playground of<lb/>
'punks'<lb/>
Fast, loud, strange<lb/>
looking musicians<lb/>
MARK ROMANO<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
The word "punk" carries<lb/>
many connotations - most people<lb/>
associate the word with trouble<lb/>
causing teens with black leather<lb/>
jackets and Mohawks. Well, that's<lb/>
pretty much right, but it's what<lb/>
bands like Bad Brains and Minor<lb/>
Threat (from which Fugazi later<lb/>
evolved) contributed to the world<lb/>
of music: freedom.<lb/>
Punk was born, evolved and<lb/>
perpetuated in America, and the<lb/>
people who created it wanted<lb/>
nothing to do with what every-<lb/>
one else was doing. Punk, for<lb/>
those of you unfamiliar with it,<lb/>
is basically really fast and loud<lb/>
guitar driven rock music, but<lb/>
that's barely scratching the sur-<lb/>
face and undermining the huge<lb/>
influence that punk had in the<lb/>
late 1970s and on future genera-<lb/>
tions of rock music.<lb/>
Punk has its roots in later clas-<lb/>
sic rock acts such as Alice Cooper<lb/>
and Iggy Pop, who pushed the<lb/>
limits of stage performance and<lb/>
began playing faster and more<lb/>
intense rock music, straying<lb/>
away from formulaic and osten-<lb/>
tatious hair metal. In 1976, The<lb/>
Ramones from New York released<lb/>
the first punk album that really<lb/>
attracted widespread attention<lb/>
and marked the beginning of<lb/>
punk popularity.<lb/>
Punk had been brewing in<lb/>
L.A New York and especially<lb/>
Washington, D.C for years in<lb/>
small nightclubs, such as the still<lb/>
popular 911 Club in D.C. Punk<lb/>
musicians nd followers had a<lb/>
great sense of independence, cre-<lb/>
ating almost a brotherly attitude<lb/>
toward the D.C. scene, which<lb/>
became known as harDCore, and<lb/>
setting themselves apart with<lb/>
spike studded leather jackets,<lb/>
Mohawks, makeup and body<lb/>
piercings.<lb/>
What better place for punk<lb/>
to emerge than the capital of<lb/>
'the land of the free"? The do-it-<lb/>
yourself, independent attitude<lb/>
kept punk alive. By not giving<lb/>
into major record labels that<lb/>
would overcharge for records<lb/>
and tickets, punk bands were self<lb/>
sufficient and proud. They cared<lb/>

I started to break down. I was so<lb/>
tired and this was so stressful <lb/>
it was 2:30 in the morning before<lb/>
they let us go back to the hotel<lb/>
and then 7:30 call, everyone was<lb/>
a bit tired and it was a little rough.<lb/>
The group day went well. We got<lb/>
group 22, and we had plenty of<lb/>
time to practice.<lb/>
We did well, and guess who forgot<lb/>
.ill the words? Katherine but<lb/>
that was the toughest part, the<lb/>
group part. Anyway, around 3<lb/>
a.m. they made us pick from 95<lb/>
songs, and my first audition song<lb/>
was on that list too. So I was just<lb/>

got great feedback. I never got a<lb/>

That's why I was so confused<lb/>

contestants), and I looked around<lb/>
before the judges) even came in<lb/>
there and 1 knew I was cut. I just<lb/>
knew it. I wanted to be in Ace's<lb/>
room<lb/>
TEC: Speaking of which, who<lb/>
were the hottest guys there?<lb/>
Sieminski: I'm in love with Ace.<lb/>
I picked him from the beginning<lb/>
to win. He didn't sound very<lb/>
good on the Denver audition<lb/>
when they showed him, but he<lb/>
was amazing in Hollywood.<lb/>
TEC: How do you feel about the<lb/>
Brittenum twins? Are they really<lb/>
as obnoxious as they came off as<lb/>
on TV?<lb/>
Sieminski: Yes, even more so.<lb/>
We hated them. Everyone was<lb/>
like, "I can't stand them They<lb/>
were very obnoxious and it was<lb/>
not surprising that they were<lb/>
held on forgery and theft.<lb/>
TEC: Most important question of<lb/>
all. Is Ryan Seacrest as corny off<lb/>
camera as he is on camera?<lb/>
Sieminski: 'laughs No. I had<lb/>
a chance to talk to Ryan a lot.<lb/>
He's an extremely nice guy, very<lb/>
down to earth, not corny at all.<lb/>
He's a cool guy, he's nice. He<lb/>
interacted with the contestants.<lb/>
I liked him a lot.<lb/>
TEC: Has anyone ever recognized<lb/>
you from the show?<lb/>
Sieminski: Yes. Last night when<lb/>
1 was working at Chico's these<lb/>
girls were talking to the waiter<lb/>
and the waiter came up to me<lb/>
and was like "those girls think<lb/>
they know you. They saw you<lb/>
on 'American Idol' last night<lb/>
laughs Some girl on the bus<lb/>
the other day asked me if I was<lb/>
on there.<lb/>
TEC: What advice do you have<lb/>
for anyone interested in audition-<lb/>
ing for the show?<lb/>
Sieminski: Go in there with an<lb/>
open mind and be ready for any-<lb/>
thing. Know that it's a hit or miss<lb/>
thing. You don't know what the<lb/>
producers are looking for. They<lb/>
have a preconceived thing that<lb/>
they're looking for every season<lb/>
before you get there. If you don't<lb/>
make it past that first round,<lb/>
don't give up. It's not you, it's<lb/>
them. It's a very difficult process;<lb/>
people always ask me if I'd do it<lb/>
again and it's a long exhausting<lb/>
process. You have to have a very<lb/>
strong passion for this business.<lb/>

Attention ECU Sophomores<lb/>
If you have earned 45-60 hours and at least 30 of them were<lb/>
completed at ECU (not counting Math 0001 or 0045),<lb/>
you are required to respond to the<lb/>
Sophomore Survey<lb/>
before you can pre-register for either<lb/>
Summer or Fall 2006 courses.<lb/>
If your earned credit hours fall within these limits you will receive a<lb/>
message at your ECU Exchange email address asking you to participate<lb/>
in the survey, and your record will be "tagged" so that you cannot register<lb/>
until you have responded to it. If you do not receive the email notice, it<lb/>
means that the survey and registration restriction does not apply to you.<lb/>
When you are taking the survey, as soon as you submit your responses<lb/>
the "tag" will be removed from your record so that you can pre-register.<lb/>
Registration staff can verify that your responses were received and that the<lb/>
tag was removed.<lb/>
Note: Although we really want your feedback to the survey questions,<lb/>
you may choose to opt out by submitting a blank form. Opting out will<lb/>
also remove the sophomore survey tag that would prevent you from<lb/>
pre-registering.<lb/>
The survey period is March 2 - April 24. During that period you can<lb/>
complete the survey by going to the ECU "One-Stop" web site, entering<lb/>
your ECU Exchange email userid and password to sign on, and clicking on<lb/>
"Sophomore Survey" in the box labeled "Surveys You can also access the<lb/>
"One-Stop" from:<lb/>
Mendenhall Computer Lab, Wright Place Cafeteria, the Austin Building,<lb/>
and Joyner Library East.<lb/>
For this survey you are emailed an announcement on March 2. Later you<lb/>
are sent an email reminder, and then a postcard, if you have not responded<lb/>
to the survey.<lb/>
Please respond to the survey as soon as possible after the survey opens on<lb/>
March 2 and certainly before sophomore pre-registration begins on March<lb/>
23. This will also help you avoid delays during pre-registration when the<lb/>
workload on ECU computers is at a peak. All remaining tags for this<lb/>
survey will be removed from student records on April 25, the day after<lb/>
the survey closes.<lb/>

the phone about the tour and<lb/>
upcoming albums.<lb/>
TEC: I know it's early in the tour,<lb/>
but does it feel any different from<lb/>
past tours?<lb/>
Furnaces: Well, we played<lb/>
Charlotte and we're in Florida<lb/>
now. We haven't played any<lb/>
shows here yet, but we're playing<lb/>
different places this tour. Besides<lb/>
that, you know, it's not much<lb/>
different. It feels different for me<lb/>
because I'm not carrying around<lb/>
a keyboard with me.<lb/>
TEC: Yeah, I noticed that. The<lb/>
last time I saw you, about a year<lb/>
ago, you played a lot more key-<lb/>
board and the bassist was play-<lb/>
ing a synthesizer, so it was sort<lb/>
of a different feel. Is there any<lb/>
reason you're not playing any<lb/>
keyboard?<lb/>
Furnaces: No big reasons. It's a<lb/>
way to make it a different expe-<lb/>
rience. We're sort of in-between<lb/>
records, I mean even though<lb/>
Rehearsing My Choir isn't that old,<lb/>
we're in-between that and Bitter<lb/>
Tea. It seemed more appropriate<lb/>
to me to just play guitar.<lb/>
TEC: Is Bitter Tea going to be<lb/>
more guitar-based like what<lb/>
you're doing with the guitar live,<lb/>
or is that just something you're<lb/>
doing on tour?<lb/>
Furnaces: Oh no, it's all key-<lb/>
boards, a lot of pianos, organs<lb/>
and synthesizers. Well, some<lb/>
guitar, but heavier on the others.<lb/>
TEC: Similar to what you did on<lb/>
Rehearsing My Choir?<lb/>
Furnaces: This record has<lb/>
drums and drum machines,<lb/>
unlike Rehearsing My Choir. And<lb/>
the songs have choruses and it's<lb/>
not really narration like the last<lb/>
album was, but more songs with<lb/>
repeating choruses, the same<lb/>
lyrics and what not. Does that<lb/>
make sense?<lb/>
TEC: Yeah, definitely. Did you<lb/>
know when you were record-<lb/>
ing Rehearsing My Choir that the<lb/>
versions you were going to be<lb/>
playing live were going to be so<lb/>
different than the way they were<lb/>
in the studio? They seem much<lb/>
more consciously rock.<lb/>
Furnaces: Live, you have the<lb/>
drums so it's natural to make<lb/>
them louder. You know, we try<lb/>
to make them into rock songs. I<lb/>
thought that would be fun. Live,<lb/>
there are drums and no Grand-<lb/>
mother, so you've got those dif-<lb/>
ferences and so that was fun to<lb/>
change them live.<lb/>
TEC: When you sit down to<lb/>
write a song, what are your<lb/>
personal goals? Is it to write<lb/>
something people will like or<lb/>
something they'll think is weird<lb/>
or unique?<lb/>
Furnaces: (laughs! I think you<lb/>
just have to try to feel fulfilled,<lb/>
personally. It's not like writing<lb/>
for a goal, but you just have to try<lb/>
to satisfy yourself. So, no I don't<lb/>
write for someone to listen and<lb/>
think it's good or bad, but just that<lb/>
it is for me, if that makes sense.<lb/>
TEC: This summer you have<lb/>
some solo albums coming out;<lb/>
are they going to be a lot different<lb/>
from the music you write for the<lb/>
Fiery Furnaces or is it similar?<lb/>
Furnaces: To me, they sound<lb/>
completely different because I<lb/>
wound up singing. One record is<lb/>
all songs and one record is a story<lb/>
record. On the story one I sort of<lb/>
have this ghost language which<lb/>
is something that happened<lb/>
because I wanted an excuse to use<lb/>
a lot of backwards vocals laughs).<lb/>
It's more like Rehearsing My Choir<lb/>
in that there's a story but no nar-<lb/>
rating. The other is just songs. It's<lb/>
a much louder rock record.<lb/>
TEC: Finally, I guess I was just<lb/>
wondering if the band name, The<lb/>
Fiery Furnaces, comes from the<lb/>
Bob Dylan song "Jokerman<lb/>
Furnaces: Oh "Jokerman No,<lb/>
the name comes from Chitty<lb/>
Chitty Bang Bang. I was watching<lb/>
and the dad says he's going to put<lb/>
the car in the Fiery Furnace, and<lb/>
1 knew it was a biblical reference.<lb/>
The idea of fire and brimstone I<lb/>
just thought sort of just fit for a<lb/>
rock band, plus my last name is<lb/>
Friedberger and there are two of<lb/>
us in the band so you have the<lb/>
two Fs. And the plural of Furnace<lb/>
just when you say it seems sort of<lb/>
hard and tongue-twisting.<lb/>

Punk<lb/>
from page B1<lb/>
about their fans and remembered<lb/>
the times when they were in the<lb/>
crowd, paying for tickets and<lb/>
albums.<lb/>
Punk itself has carried dif-<lb/>
ferent themes through different<lb/>
bands: some were anti-establish-<lb/>
ment, some were anti-drug, and<lb/>
many focused on the problems<lb/>
of the young performers' lives,<lb/>
which allowed them to connect<lb/>
with a large group of young<lb/>
adults in the area. Whatever<lb/>
message they carried, it was a<lb/>
high energy expression of life,<lb/>
often focusing on being tired of<lb/>
a repressive government and the<lb/>
toils of life, but in a completely<lb/>
proactive way. Songs typically<lb/>
lasted two to three minutes, since<lb/>
they were played so fervently,<lb/>
and also reflected the attitude<lb/>
of the scene in the sense that<lb/>
they wanted to get things done<lb/>
as loud, fast and straightforward<lb/>
as they could.<lb/>
Punk would later fizzle out<lb/>
in the late 1980s and become a<lb/>
huge influence on grunge and<lb/>
later rock music. Punk has had a<lb/>
series of submissions and revivals<lb/>
in the music world, most recently<lb/>
resurfacing in an unfortunately<lb/>
mainstream form.<lb/>
Punk bands from D.C.<lb/>
embraced their vision, and unlike<lb/>
many political and social move-<lb/>
ments, they focused on the fact<lb/>
that they have already become<lb/>
outspoken social rebels and<lb/>
gained a massive following that<lb/>
is still predominant today.<lb/>

Keith LeClair Classic 2006<lb/>
In-state rivals NCSU,<lb/>
UNC-W come to<lb/>
Greenville<lb/>
BRENT WYNNE<lb/>
SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
ECU will host the third<lb/>
annual Keith LeClair Classic<lb/>
beginning Friday morning, as<lb/>
teams pay tribute to the man<lb/>
who put ECU baseball on the<lb/>
map and in the minds of people<lb/>
throughout the country. While<lb/>
LeClair continues his fight with<lb/>
ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), the<lb/>
Pirates and five other teams will<lb/>
hopefully give the former skipper<lb/>
the best three days he's had in<lb/>
quite some time.<lb/>
The Diamond Bucs welcome<lb/>
opponents Penn State, UNC-<lb/>
Wilmington and Virginia Tech,<lb/>
as well as West Virginia and<lb/>
N.C. State. Teams will play three<lb/>
games against a combination of<lb/>
three of the five other teams in a<lb/>
round robin type format.<lb/>
ECU gets under way Friday at<lb/>
5 p.m. as they battle Penn State.<lb/>
They will then play UNC-W at<lb/>
1:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed<lb/>
by Virginia Tech Sunday at 1 p.m.<lb/>
The tournament as a whole<lb/>
gets under way bright and early<lb/>
Friday, as the Hokies square off<lb/>
against the Seahawks at 10 a.m.<lb/>
Let's take a look at the Pirates'<lb/>
opponents.<lb/>
PENN STATE: The Nittany<lb/>
Lions don't quite pack the same<lb/>
punch as Joe Paterno's Orange<lb/>
Bowl champs. Penn State opened<lb/>
the 2006 baseball season dropping<lb/>
all three games at perennial power<lb/>
Tulane. The Green Wave domi-<lb/>
nated their inferior opponents 9-<lb/>
3,12-0 and 9-4.1 wouldn't expect<lb/>
Penn State to put up much of a<lb/>
fight against the Pirates, but noth-<lb/>
ing is a sure thing. With that in<lb/>
mind, here are some players who<lb/>
V<lb/>
could have an impact in Friday's<lb/>
game against ECU.<lb/>
Key Hitters: Lance Thomp-<lb/>
son - the senior outfielder was<lb/>
named the Big Ten Player of the<lb/>
Week after he hit .417 during a<lb/>
three game series against Tulane.<lb/>
Thompson was 5-12 for the set,<lb/>
including a home run, a double<lb/>
and four RBI. The Lion slugger<lb/>
also recorded nine total bases,<lb/>
as well as two runs scored while<lb/>
slugging .750. This is the first time<lb/>
a Penn State hitter has received<lb/>
this honor since Matt Harter did<lb/>
for the week of Feb. 24, 2004.<lb/>
Brian Ernst - In two<lb/>
The Pirates will face off against non-conference rival UNC-Wilmington, along with Virginia Tech and Penn State.<lb/>
"<lb/>
games started, the 5-foot-ll-<lb/>
inch switch hitter was 4-for-8<lb/>
at the plate, with four total<lb/>
bases and one run scored. He<lb/>
also slugged .500 for the series.<lb/>
As a team, the Nittany Lions<lb/>
only have three players batting<lb/>
over .250 after three games of play.<lb/>
The other one to do this besides<lb/>
Thompson and Ernst was James<lb/>
Spinelli, who only played in one<lb/>
game, going 2-for-2 at the plate.<lb/>
Key Pitchers: Scott Kelley-the<lb/>
freshman right-hander made two<lb/>
relief appearances against the<lb/>
Green Wave. In his two innings<lb/>
of work, he surrendered only one<lb/>
hit and one run. His ERA for the<lb/>
young season is 4.50.<lb/>
Aaron Markowitz - the junior<lb/>
reliever was the workhorse of the<lb/>
staff over the weekend, leading<lb/>
the team in innings pitched with<lb/>
5.1. In his two appearances, he<lb/>
gave up five hits and three earned<lb/>
runs. He, along with Kelley, may<lb/>
get some work against the Pirates<lb/>
if the Nittany Lion starter is<lb/>
chased early, as has been the case<lb/>
in all three games this season.<lb/>
UNC-WILMINGTON: The<lb/>
Seahawks likely represent ECU's<lb/>
most formidable opponent for<lb/>
the weekend. They bring a 5-1<lb/>
record to Greenville along with<lb/>
a chip on their shoulder as they<lb/>
had to watch their bitter rivals go<lb/>
to their seventh straight NCAA<lb/>
tournament last season, while<lb/>
they were one of only three teams<lb/>
in the country with 40 or more<lb/>
wins not to make the field of 64.<lb/>
Wilmington absolutely embar-<lb/>
ks rassed Maryland-Eastern Shore in<lb/>
 a three game series 19-2,18-0 and<lb/>
S 20-1 before dropping the open-<lb/>
ing game against Wake Forest<lb/>
S 7-9. The Seahawks bounced back<lb/>
 against the Deacons, taking the<lb/>
last two games 10-8 and 10-5. Sat-<lb/>
urday afternoon's game against<lb/>
the Pirates could be an offensive<lb/>
exhibition. Here are the key play-<lb/>
ers for UNC-W.<lb/>
Key Hitters: John Raynor - The<lb/>
Colonial Athletic Association<lb/>
named Raynor the Player of the<lb/>
Week after the senior outfielder hit<lb/>
.613 in a three game series against<lb/>
Wake Forest. For the season,<lb/>
Raynor has a six game hitting<lb/>
streak with a .652 batting aver-<lb/>
age and currently ranks second<lb/>
on Wilmington's all-time batting<lb/>
average list with a career .352<lb/>
average. For the season, Raynor<lb/>
has belted two home runs with<lb/>
nine RBI and seven runs scored.<lb/>
Chris Hatcher - The junior<lb/>
outfielder is batting .619 with one<lb/>
home run, five RBI, four doubles<lb/>
and a team leading 15 runs.<lb/>
Matt Poulk - leads the team<lb/>
in RBI with 11. He is also tied for<lb/>
the team lead with three round<lb/>
trippers. The senior infielder is<lb/>
slugging 1.056 and has scored<lb/>
nine times.<lb/>
Justin Barefoot - Tied with<lb/>
Poulk for team lead in homers<lb/>
with three. The redshirt sopho-<lb/>
more is batting .450 with seven<lb/>
RBI and nine runs scored.<lb/>
Daniel Hargrave (.538,2 HRs,<lb/>
9 RBI, 1.154 slugging percentage),<lb/>
Steve Halford (.474, HR, 7 RBI)<lb/>
and Jonathan Batts (.300, HR, 8<lb/>
RBI) are also major contributors to<lb/>
this loaded Wilmington offense.<lb/>
Key Pitchers: Zach Booker - In<lb/>
two starts this season, the junior<lb/>
is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 12.2<lb/>
innings. Booker has recorded 12<lb/>
strikeouts, and opponents are<lb/>
hitting .271 against him. Allen<lb/>
Flood - Flood is 1-0 with a 2.61<lb/>
ERA in two starts. He has only<lb/>
given up five hits in 10.1 innings<lb/>

Ten Nagging Questions<lb/>
Gilmore sounds off on<lb/>
hot button sports topics<lb/>
EMC GILMORE<lb/>
SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
First of all, whoever<lb/>
unscrewed my car antenna on<lb/>
Saturday night, I want it back. Do<lb/>
you see me laughing now that my<lb/>
coveted AM dial has been erased,<lb/>
limiting me to two garbage FM<lb/>
choices? No. If it gets returned<lb/>
in its proper place, no questions<lb/>
will be asked.<lb/>
Luckily, digitalwireless tech-<lb/>
nological advances allowed me<lb/>
to still stay informed during<lb/>
a busy sports week. Just think<lb/>
- if Al Gore hadn't invented the<lb/>
Internet, I would have spent all<lb/>
week positioning the aluminum<lb/>
foil covered bunny ears amid<lb/>
plumes of static. Instead, I took<lb/>
a two-hour nap and didn't miss<lb/>
a lick of the Daytona 500. Hal-<lb/>
lelujah DVR.<lb/>
So during a weekend chalked<lb/>
full of Olympic, NASCAR and<lb/>
men's basketball coverage, I found<lb/>
myself perplexed by 10 questions<lb/>
meant for a higher power. Not<lb/>
as in God, but just a reasonable<lb/>
fellow smarter than myself.<lb/>
Five to Ponder<lb/>
What are the chances<lb/>
that the ECU ice hockey<lb/>
team Is a varsity sport in<lb/>
10 years?<lb/>
Hey, never say never. How-<lb/>
ever, never might be the closest<lb/>
right answer. The days of ECU<lb/>
facing Maine In the Frozen Four<lb/>
are somewhere this side of an<lb/>
eastern North Carolina glacier.<lb/>
I'm on the bandwagon with the<lb/>
next 700 fans packed in Bladez<lb/>
on Ice on Friday, but too many<lb/>
logistical hurdles loom for the<lb/>
upstart squad beginning with the<lb/>
athletic administration.<lb/>
Athletic director Terry Hol-<lb/>
land said in an interview with<lb/>
TEC released Dec. 8 that "since<lb/>
ECU has 19 sports that means<lb/>
we support more sports than other<lb/>
Conference USA schools and more<lb/>
than many of our competitors<lb/>
from BCS conferences with much<lb/>
larger budgets<lb/>
When asked about adding an<lb/>
additional sport, Holland added<lb/>
that "unless someone knows<lb/>
something that I don't know, I<lb/>
believe that until ECU'S athletic<lb/>
budget is comparable to those of<lb/>
schools with 20 or more sports<lb/>
playing Division I-A football, ECU<lb/>
will not add a sport.<lb/>
Sorry to be the bearer of bad<lb/>
news. Consider the financial<lb/>
ramifications of an already drown-<lb/>
ing financial budge Supplying<lb/>
equipment, possibly converting<lb/>
Minges into an ice rink and adding<lb/>
women's sports or contracting<lb/>
another men's sport to comply<lb/>
with Title IX would be the tip of<lb/>
the Iceberg. 1 know, bad pun.<lb/>
If any sports will be added,<lb/>
why not lacrosse or crew? At<lb/>
least lacrosse with its increasing<lb/>
popularity would draw more fans<lb/>
than a men's or women's tennis<lb/>
match. Tennis channel watchers,<lb/>
the truth hurts.<lb/>
As the sectionals began<lb/>
Tuesday, are the high school<lb/>
basketball playoffs still rel-<lb/>
evant?<lb/>
The national media drooled<lb/>
over the top ranked Oak Hill<lb/>
Academy's 88-74 Saturday win<lb/>
over then-No. 2 North College<lb/>
Hill. Both schools may hand out<lb/>
high school diplomas, but these<lb/>
basketball factories put education<lb/>
a distant second. The premier high<lb/>
school teams recruit from AAU<lb/>
summer squads making public<lb/>
high school basketball almost<lb/>
obsolete.<lb/>
I'm tired of newspapers being<lb/>
saturated about prep athletes<lb/>
being groomed to make qualifying<lb/>
scores on the SAT. In this me-first<lb/>
sports world we live in, how about<lb/>
some team-oriented stories from<lb/>
the state playoffs? Fewer than 10<lb/>
people probably caught wind of<lb/>
the first round barnburner when a<lb/>
Washington l'am Pack player sank<lb/>
two free throws with 0.05 seconds<lb/>
left to edge Nash Central on Tues-<lb/>
day. That's at least newsworthy.<lb/>
Call me stupid, but does<lb/>
anyone know where Andorra,<lb/>
Liechtenstein or Moldova is?<lb/>
I don't claim myself to be<lb/>
a geographical buff, but I'm no<lb/>
slouch either. I could name my<lb/>
state capitals by the third grade.<lb/>
But watching the theatrical waste<lb/>
of millions that was the Olympic<lb/>
opening ceremonies, I realized<lb/>
that I need to touch up on my<lb/>
map skills. Certainly none of these<lb/>
countries have a chance to medal,<lb/>
but shouldn't it be a prerequisite<lb/>
that American fans have been<lb/>
taught of the country's existence?<lb/>
By the way, what is the difference<lb/>
between Slovenia and Slovakia?<lb/>
And NBC wonders why they can't<lb/>
garner ratings. Either Americans<lb/>
need to dust off their Geosafaris<lb/>
or the IOC needs to provide more<lb/>
extensive entrance requirements.<lb/>
Is SIOnCampus.com crazy ,<lb/>
naming UNC among the Tap<lb/>
10 College Basketball Student<lb/>
Sections?<lb/>
David Letterman and I love<lb/>
top 10 lists. I don't love his, mainly<lb/>
because that dweeby sunglass-<lb/>
wearing fool always spazzes out.<lb/>
Nevertheless, In order of the most<lb/>
raucous crowd to the sedate. Sports<lb/>
Illustrated listed Duke, Illinois, Ken-<lb/>
tucky, Michigan State and Florida<lb/>
In the top five. No arguments<lb/>
there. Rounding out the top ten<lb/>
was Kansas, Rutgers, Washington,<lb/>
Gonzaga and UNC. Cue the funny<lb/>
accented cowboy in disbelief that<lb/>
Pace Picante Sauce was from New<lb/>
York City. Only exchange the New<lb/>
York City with UNC.<lb/>
How on earth has Sam Cas-<lb/>
sell's proclaimed "wine and cheese i.<lb/>
crowd" emerged to become a top <lb/>
10 student section? It must be a<lb/>
Stuart Scott conspiracy. Appar-<lb/>

How can the U.C. Santa Barbara<lb/>

Virginia, Virginia Tech and for<lb/>

The only team to ever suffer<lb/>

NCAA could be in trouble again<lb/>
for committing violations. The<lb/>
only comfort is that this time<lb/>
the basketball team is in trouble<lb/>
instead of the fledgling football<lb/>
team. According to the Dallas<lb/>
Morning News, the NCAA is<lb/>
investigating whether men's<lb/>
Head Coach Jimmy Tubbs com-<lb/>
mitted an NCAA rules violation<lb/>
by accepting money from a<lb/>

The paper went on to report .<lb/>

The real question is when the<lb/>

VIRGINIA TECH: It's hard<lb/>

Is a California cult going<lb/>

I thought analysts were just<lb/>

- continuing the trend of Player<lb/>

baseman Bryan Thomas was<lb/>
named the ACC Player of the<lb/>
Week last week for his efforts in<lb/>
the Campbell series. The junior<lb/>
batted .700 in two games, with<lb/>
two home runs and 10 RBI. He<lb/>
also scored four times and is<lb/>
slugging an astonishu 1.400.<lb/>
He drove in a career high seven<lb/>
runs in Virginia Tech's 16-6 win<lb/>
in game two. Thomas led the club<lb/>
last season with a .384 average.<lb/>
Nate Parks - In two games<lb/>
started, Parks was 4-for-8 with a<lb/>
trip and two RBI. He scored five<lb/>
times as well.<lb/>
Sheldon Adams - The senior<lb/>
outfielder was 4-for-10, with a<lb/>
triple, an RBI and two runs scored.<lb/>
Key Pitchers: David Cross<lb/>
- The junior started game one<lb/>
against the Camels and held<lb/>
them at bay, pitching five solid<lb/>
innings. He scattered five hits<lb/>
and gave up just one earned run<lb/>
while striking out four. He leads<lb/>
starters with a 1.80 ERA.<lb/>
Greg Fryman - came on in<lb/>
