Spring semester is in full swing and<lb/>
many students are beginning to make<lb/>
decisions for next year. One of the hard-<lb/>
est and most important things they have<lb/>
to decide is where to live. Students can<lb/>
choose to live on campus in a dorm, or-<lb/>
off campus in an apartment or house.<lb/>
Each of these options come with their<lb/>
own set of pros and cons, but the decid-<lb/>
ing factor is ultimately based on per-<lb/>
sonal preference.<lb/>
Lets start with dorm life, which<lb/>
is an option predominately chosen by<lb/>
underclassmen who are exploring the<lb/>
idea of living away from home for the<lb/>
first time. The best thing about living in<lb/>
a dorm is that they are on campus and<lb/>
within walking distance to all of your<lb/>
classes as well as the library, Student<lb/>
Recreation Center and various dining<lb/>
options. Living in the residence halls<lb/>
also has various perks including free<lb/>
laundry facilities, cable television, high<lb/>
speed internet, daily newspapers, com-<lb/>
puter lab access and phone service.<lb/>
Although the residence halls them-<lb/>

a distinct possibility that you and your<lb/>
roommate will share a similar schedule.<lb/>

and unruly, but luckily each floor has a<lb/>
resident advisor (RA) that is trained to<lb/>

Off-campus options include both<lb/>
apartments and houses. The difference<lb/>
between the two isn't substantial, how-<lb/>
ever it is important to recognize that,<lb/>
like the dorms, they each come with<lb/>

tired of dorm life and searching for a<lb/>
place to call home. There are many local<lb/>
apartment complexes that are included<lb/>
on the ECU bus route or have their own<lb/>
bus to provide students with quick and<lb/>

There are a vast number of com-<lb/>
plexes that offer amenities which cater<lb/>
to college students. Apartments come<lb/>
furnished or unfurnished depending<lb/>
on preference. Furnished apartments<lb/>
include full-sized beds, desks, chairs,<lb/>
sofas, end tables, dressers, night stands<lb/>
and kitchen tables with chairs. Some<lb/>
other perks include a refrigerator,<lb/>
washer and dryer, dishwasher, Internet,<lb/>
private bathroom and large closet space.<lb/>
Of course, these things are going to vary<lb/>
from complex to complex but the overall<lb/>
advantages are about the same.<lb/>
Utilities, water and sewage, cable<lb/>
and high-speed Internet are often bun-<lb/>
dled with the rent of the apartment. Not<lb/>
having to remember to pay more than<lb/>
one bill every month can save students<lb/>
from credit problems down the road. The<lb/>
only disadvantage of having these things<lb/>
included are that you are only allotted a<lb/>
set amount of utilities each month and<lb/>
if you go over you can be facing unex-<lb/>
pected charges.<lb/>
Students looking for a place that is<lb/>
more like a home away from home rather<lb/>
than just a place to live may search for<lb/>
a house. There are many houses within<lb/>
walking distance from campus that can<lb/>
be rented out to students. Living in a<lb/>
house can provide students with a larger<lb/>
living area as well as more freedom.<lb/>
However, houses don't generally<lb/>
include things such as cable, Internet,<lb/>
water, sewage and utilities in the rent,<lb/>
and having to pay for each thing sepa-<lb/>
rately can become a bit pricey. Also,<lb/>
most houses don't come furnished which<lb/>
means you are looking at the possibil-<lb/>
ity of spending hundreds of dollars on<lb/>
furniture. If you can get past the extra<lb/>
expenses, however, a house can be the<lb/>
ideal place to set up home.<lb/>
In the end the decision is yours, and<lb/>
depending on personal preferences one<lb/>
of these options is bound to be the per-<lb/>
fect place to call home.<lb/>

It's the bane of the collegian's<lb/>
existence and the sole cause of all<lb/>
discomfort associated with living<lb/>
off campus.<lb/>
I'm talking about the one piece of<lb/>
mail you never want to get. That's right,<lb/>
the electric bill.<lb/>
Greenville Utilities should never,<lb/>
ever go broke with the way they charge<lb/>
for lights and heating. No matter<lb/>
how hard you try, the price is so spo-<lb/>
radic your budget never feels quite the<lb/>
iamc month-to-month. With so many<lb/>
electric accounts in Greenville, there's an<lb/>
equal number of people who think they<lb/>
know exacUy how to keep the bill down,<lb/>
and a lot of them haven't the foggiest as to<lb/>
where the real budget busters are.<lb/>
As a three-year veteran of the<lb/>
dreaded electric company, I fee! highly<lb/>
qualified to inform you of the secrets<lb/>
to a minimized electric bill. Keep in<lb/>
mind, planning to lower the bill signifi-<lb/>
cantly can be like game-planning to stop<lb/>
Michael Jordan at basketball - you can<lb/>
never stop it, no matter what you do. You<lb/>
can only hope to contain it. But we'll<lb/>
take a crack at it.<lb/>
First, to all your friends and anal-<lb/>
retentive roommates who storm around<lb/>
the house turning off the lights behind<lb/>
you and moaning and groaning about<lb/>
4he electric bill, this will shut them up<lb/>
once and fof all - the lights do NOT<lb/>
contribute the most to power usage.<lb/>
The truth is they use very little, and the<lb/>
same is true for the rest of the major<lb/>
appliances. If you were to turn off your<lb/>
computer every night, hit every light as<lb/>
you leave, and basically shut down your<lb/>
electric house at bedtime, it would not<lb/>
give you that much lower of a bill.<lb/>
According to Greenville Utilities,<lb/>
one of the most money-saving things<lb/>
you can do for your electric bill is to<lb/>
make sure your house is weather-sealed<lb/>
and windows are sealed properly; this<lb/>
can save up to 30 percent on your bill.<lb/>
Some tips from the other side:<lb/>
The biggest gulper of power is that<lb/>
p lovely little sliding dial in your living room,<lb/>
8 the thermostat. If you have roommates that<lb/>
fi fight over it, be prepared for a high bill.<lb/>
 The more you play with it, the higher the<lb/>
bill gets. The best thing to do is find one<lb/>
comfortable middle place and forget about<lb/>
it. Roommates who slide it up and down in<lb/>
a silent argument will send your bill sky-<lb/>
ward, so work it out somehow. The U.S.<lb/>
Department of Energy actually recom-<lb/>
mends a thermostat setting of 68 degrees or<lb/>
tower in the winter. Personally, for those of<lb/>
as who are hot natured, people who are cold<lb/>
can put on more clothes. Once you're hot, it<lb/>
could get awkward stripping off layers of<lb/>
clothing trying to cool off.<lb/>
The washer and dryer can also be a<lb/>
problem, but here are a few simple solu-<lb/>
tions. For the washer, use cold water. Heat-<lb/>
ing the water uses power, and your clothes<lb/>
will be just as clean in cold water. (Hint:<lb/>
you don't have to be a laundry guru with<lb/>
cold water, either. It's just water, detergent<lb/>
and clothes with no picky sorting.) For<lb/>
the dryer, clean the finer after every load.<lb/>
It can be tedious to clean that little wire<lb/>
thing, but it will save you money.<lb/>
The best way to save money is<lb/>
to check your house or apartment for<lb/>
energy leaks and places where heat leaks<lb/>
out (i.e. the refrigerator or the air condi-<lb/>
tioner) and take care of them. Just updat-<lb/>
ing your window seals could save you a<lb/>
lot. If these items still bother you, just<lb/>
go to the electric company and ask them<lb/>
how you can lower your bill. They're not<lb/>
really evil people, they'll give you a nice<lb/>
little handout that breaks down exactly<lb/>
how much money running certain appli-<lb/>
ances can cost per hour. They'll tell you<lb/>
this ultimately: anything that heats or<lb/>
cools will hurt you.<lb/>
The electric bill is probably the one<lb/>
thing that can ruin your month if it's too<lb/>
high. Nothing makes a person shiver like<lb/>
opening that envelope and seeing those<lb/>
high digits. However, if you're smart<lb/>
with your electric usage, and you can be<lb/>
content in one steady temperature, you<lb/>
should never go bankrupt.<lb/>
