Lottery contract goes to<lb/>

The highly anticipated start<lb/>

is going to arrive sooner than<lb/>
expected, with the first scratch-<lb/>
off tickets set to go on sale in<lb/>
March and the lotto-style tickets<lb/>
set for release May 30.<lb/>
The announcement comes<lb/>
after the state lottery commission<lb/>
chose GTECH Holdings Corp. to<lb/>
run the games. GTECH was in a<lb/>
heated competition with Scien-<lb/>

that has come under investiga-<lb/>

The investigation has already<lb/>

ECU VOICE speaks out about violence<lb/>
Ashley Wrenn shares her view on<lb/>
domestic violence issues.<lb/>
Addressing abuse, rape<lb/>
and other 'hot' topics<lb/>
CLAIRE MURPHY<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
ECU VOICE held an open<lb/>
mic benefit Tuesday, Jan. 31<lb/>
at Mudslinger's downtown to<lb/>
spread awareness of the domestic<lb/>
violence issue in Pitt County.<lb/>
Donations were accepted and<lb/>
went to the anti-violence cam-<lb/>
paign, V-Day 2006. The benefit is<lb/>
a prelude to the much-anticipated<lb/>
Vagina Monologues coming Feb.<lb/>
10-12.<lb/>
The coffee shop was a com-<lb/>
fortable place to sit and listen<lb/>
to the 10 volunteer readers who<lb/>
participated in speaking on rape,<lb/>
sexual abuse and spousal abuse.<lb/>
Anyone who signed up could<lb/>
express themselves freely on the<lb/>
"speak up and stop the violence"<lb/>
theme.<lb/>
Host Lorian Long, who is also<lb/>
the president of VOICE and pro-<lb/>
ducing the Vagina Monologues,<lb/>
began the presentation with some<lb/>
Latwon Johnson (left) and Andrew Canty (right) in police mug shots.<lb/>

Students were encouraged to attend The Vagina Monologues in Wright Auditorium Feb. 10 -12.<lb/>
frightening statistics including<lb/>
"three women are murdered by<lb/>
their husband or boyfriend every<lb/>
day and "one out of 16 accused<lb/>
rapists will spend time in jail,<lb/>
while 15 walk free<lb/>
Most of the participants read<lb/>
poems that had very dark and<lb/>
serious messages expressing<lb/>
personal feelings on the sensi-<lb/>
tive topic. Speaker and audience<lb/>
member Ashley Wrenn said,<lb/>
"It is important for anyone to<lb/>
come to events like this that<lb/>
promote awareness because vio-<lb/>
lence (against women) is not<lb/>
recognized enough<lb/>
Another speaker and poet,<lb/>
Bridget Todd, said, "People think<lb/>
this is such a far away issue and<lb/>
don't recognize that it could be<lb/>
happening to their neighbor or in<lb/>
their own dorm. Listening to the<lb/>
people speaking from experience<lb/>
can really give violence a face<lb/>
The violence awareness pre-<lb/>
sentation at Mudslinger's was<lb/>
partially sponsored by the Family<lb/>
Violence Program of Pitt County<lb/>
and was helped by the student<lb/>
director of the Vagina Mono-<lb/>
logues, Nikki Crews. Tickets for<lb/>
the upcoming Vagina Mono-<lb/>
logues will be available outside<lb/>
Wright Place this week and next<lb/>
week or at ecuarts.com.<lb/>
The evening also fea-<lb/>
tured a closing performance<lb/>
with a powerful song by the<lb/>
band Someone's Sister, who has<lb/>
traveled the country promot-<lb/>
ing the knowledge of domestic<lb/>
violence with lyrics inspired<lb/>
by local headlining news<lb/>
articles. The artists in the band<lb/>
are Georgia Winfree and Kath-<lb/>

heard on their Web site, some-<lb/>

Long said during her conclu-<lb/>
sion, "Come to the Vagina Mono-<lb/>

Ploy for peace gets famous activist jailed<lb/>
Sheehan arrested for<lb/>
unlawful conduct<lb/>
ZACK HILL<lb/>
ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR<lb/>
Peace activist Cindy Sheehan<lb/>
is back in the national spotlight<lb/>
again, this time getting arrested<lb/>
for causing a disruption in the<lb/>
House of Representatives galley<lb/>
just before President Bush's State of<lb/>
the Union address Tuesday night.<lb/>
Sheehan's son, Casey Austin<lb/>
Sheehan, was killed in Iraq, and<lb/>
she almost immediately started<lb/>
gaining attention as one of the<lb/>
most outspoken citizens against<lb/>
the war.<lb/>
In April 2004, Sheehan and<lb/>
other relatives of soldiers killed in<lb/>
Iraq met with Bush at Fort Lewis,<lb/>
Washington. Sheehan says that<lb/>
during the meeting, the president<lb/>
didn't want to hear about her<lb/>
son and even refused to look at<lb/>
pictures of him.<lb/>
In August 2005, Sheehan and<lb/>
other protestors began camping<lb/>
outside the president's ranch in<lb/>
Crawford, Texas. The group was<lb/>
demanding a meeting with Bush,<lb/>
but the president refused to meet<lb/>
with her again.<lb/>
Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Cali-<lb/>
fornia, another supporter of<lb/>
immediate withdrawal from Iraq,<lb/>
had invited Sheehan as a guest<lb/>
Tuesday night. Sheehan showed<lb/>
up wearing a T-shirt that said,<lb/>
"2,245 Dead. How many more?"<lb/>
referring to the number of U.S.<lb/>
soldiers killed in Iraq.<lb/>
Sheehan was asked to cover<lb/>
up the message and refused. She<lb/>
was handcuffed and arrested<lb/>
around 8:30 p.m. on charges<lb/>
of unlawful conduct. She was<lb/>
released a few hours later.<lb/>
Not One More Mother's Child,<lb/>
a book Sheehan wrote about<lb/>
her son and the war in Iraq, was<lb/>
published in November 2005.<lb/>

degree murder in the shooting<lb/>
death of Paul Berkley.<lb/>

home, he was shot and killed<lb/>
at a North Raleigh Millbrook<lb/>
Exchange park after a romantic<lb/>
night out to dinner and a movie<lb/>
with his wife.<lb/>
His wife, Monique Berkley,<lb/>
26, according to WRAL News<lb/>
confessed to investigators that<lb/>
she lured her husband to the<lb/>
park where he was shot and<lb/>
killed.<lb/>
Andrew Canty, 18, was also<lb/>
charged with first-degree murder<lb/>
and lived with Monique Berkley<lb/>
during his love affair with her<lb/>
during Paul Berkley's deploy-<lb/>
ment.<lb/>
Police said Monique Berkley,<lb/>

Johnson and Berkley's rela-<lb/>
tionship fell apart after Johnson<lb/>
left for college.<lb/>
He lived in Belk Hall and was<lb/>
studying business as a first year<lb/>

According to WRAL News,<lb/>
Lamarjohnson had saved enough<lb/>
money to pay a semester's tuition<lb/>
for both brothers at ECU.<lb/>
Brant Bush, 18, an Aycock res-<lb/>

out to find out that a murderer<lb/>
lived two dorms down from me. It<lb/>
makes me sad to see this happen<lb/>
to a person who just came back<lb/>
from the Middle East<lb/>
Police searched Johnson's<lb/>
dorm room and took computers<lb/>
and cell phones as evidence.<lb/>
Timothy Dixon, an ECU<lb/>
Police officer said, "Raleigh had<lb/>
contacted ECU Police and wanted<lb/>
to know if he was here. They<lb/>
(ECU Police) didn't want to talk<lb/>
to the suspect without paper<lb/>
work because they were worried<lb/>
he would destroy evidence<lb/>
According to ECU Police<lb/>
they didn't get a warrant in time<lb/>
before the suspect left, but he<lb/>
(Johnson) was caught along with<lb/>
Canty in Raleigh.<lb/>

Sen. Ham Horton dies at age 74<lb/>
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Sen.<lb/>
Hamilton Horton, a nine-term<lb/>
Republican legislator known for<lb/>
his impassioned speeches on the<lb/>
Senate floor going back 35 years,<lb/>
died Tuesday at the age of 74.<lb/>
Horton died at about 2 p.m. at his<lb/>
home, Senate officials said. Horton<lb/>
announced in December that he<lb/>
wouldn't run for another term because<lb/>
he had been diagnosed with cancer.<lb/>
The Winston-Salem attorney had<lb/>
a cancerous kidney removed in<lb/>
September but discovered later that<lb/>
the illness had spread throughout<lb/>
his body.<lb/>
Horton served two terms in the Senate<lb/>
beginning in 1971 but returned in<lb/>
1995 for six more terms. He also<lb/>
was in the House for one term in<lb/>
1969-70.<lb/>
Known for his commitment to the<lb/>
environment and conservative<lb/>
principles of fiscal responsibility<lb/>
and individual freedoms, Horton<lb/>
likely will be remembered for his<lb/>
speechmaking ability. His oratory<lb/>
often left reporters and his fellow<lb/>
senators searching for a dictionary<lb/>
to fully digest his remarks.<lb/>
On what would be the last working<lb/>
day at his Senate desk in August,<lb/>
Horton made an unsuccessful plea to<lb/>
stop passage of a state lottery, calling<lb/>
it "nothing but a fleecing of the people<lb/>

Iran's president lashes out at<lb/>
Bush, pledges to resist pressures<lb/>
of 'bully countries'<lb/>
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - In a speech to<lb/>
thousands of supporters Wednesday,<lb/>
Iranian President Mahmoud<lb/>
Ahmadinejad lashed out at the<lb/>
United States and vowed to resist<lb/>
the pressures of 'bully countries" to<lb/>
constrain Tehran's nuclear program,<lb/>
a day before the UN. nuclear agency<lb/>
is likely to vote to haul the country<lb/>
before the Security Council.<lb/>
Speaking hours after President<lb/>
Bush's State of the Union address,<lb/>
the Iranian leader derided the United<lb/>
States, as a "hollow superpower" that<lb/>
is "tainted with the blood of nations"<lb/>
and said Tehran would continue its<lb/>
nuclear program.<lb/>
"Nuclear energy is our right, and<lb/>
we will resist until this right is fully<lb/>
realized Ahmadinejad told the crowd<lb/>
in the southern Iran city of Bushehr,<lb/>
the site of Iran's only nuclear power<lb/>
plant.<lb/>
"Our nation can't give in to the<lb/>
coercion of some bully countries who<lb/>
imagine they are the whole world and<lb/>
see themselves equal to the entire<lb/>

The crowd responded with chants of<lb/>
"Nuclear energy is our right<lb/>
Referring to Bush directly and the<lb/>
U.Sled Iraq war, Ahmadinejad said:<lb/>
Those whose hands are tainted with<lb/>
blood of nations and are involved in<lb/>
wars and oppression in any part of<lb/>
the world we, hopefully, in the near<lb/>
future will put you on trial in courts<lb/>

The comments came after Bush<lb/>

Steelers going for fifth ring<lb/>
Cowher back for first time in years<lb/>
BY RON CLEMENTS<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Ten years ago Pittsburgh Head Coach Bill<lb/>
Cowher walked off the field at Sun Devil Sta-<lb/>
dium a loser following Super Bowl XXX when<lb/>
his Steelers lost to the Dallas Cowboys, 27-17,<lb/>
Cowher, then in just his fourth NFL season,<lb/>
was pretty sure he'd be back to the Super Bowl.<lb/>
He just didn't think it'd take 10 years.<lb/>
Fast forward those 10 seasons and<lb/>
Cowher, now in his 14th season as Pitts-<lb/>
burgh's head coach, has the Steelers back<lb/>
in the Super Bowl to face the NFC's best<lb/>
team, the Seattle Seahawks.<lb/>
Cowher is hoping for different results<lb/>
this time around. In 1995, he had a<lb/>
veteran quarterback who had played<lb/>
mistake-free football most of the season<lb/>
in Neil O'Donnell, but then threw three<lb/>
interceptions in the Super Bowl - two to<lb/>
game MVP Larry Brown. In 2005, Cowher<lb/>
has a young quarterback who has played<lb/>
great in the postseason and has lost just<lb/>
one game away from the Steel City in 15<lb/>
career outings.<lb/>
Ben Roethlisberger has been near<lb/>
flawless in the playoffs, notably at Denver<lb/>
In the AFC Championship game. The<lb/>
second-year QB from Miami, Ohio, was<lb/>
21-29 for 275 yards and two touchdowns<lb/>
as Pittsburgh converted four Jake Plum-<lb/>
mer turnovers into 21 points en route<lb/>
to a 34-17 dismantling of the AFC's No.<lb/>
2 seed. A week earlier, Pittsburgh's pres-<lb/>
suring defense confused and harassed<lb/>
Indianapolis' Peyton Manning and the<lb/>
AFC's top-seeded Colts.<lb/>
Sunday, the Steelers will face the NFC's top<lb/>
seed, the Seattle Sealiawks, and the NFL's MVP,<lb/>
running back Shaun Alexander. Pittsburgh<lb/>
lumped on both lndy and Denver early to force<lb/>
the Cohs and Broncos to play front behind and<lb/>
take them out of their game plan. If the Steelers<lb/>
plan cm beating the Seahawks, that strategy<lb/>
will riave to play out once again in order to take<lb/>
the ball away from Alexander, who led the NFL<lb/>
with 1,880 rushing yards and an NFL record 28<lb/>
touchdowns, and the explosive Seattle offense.<lb/>
Both Pittsburgh and Seattle have pow-<lb/>
erful running games. The Steelers are, of<lb/>
course, led by Jerome "The Bus" Bettis,<lb/>
but were led statistically by second-year<lb/>
back from North Carolina Willie Parker.<lb/>
Parker ran for more than 1,200 yards this<lb/>
season and was the Steelers' third-string<lb/>
back coming into the year, behind Bettis<lb/>
and former Philadelphia Eagle Duce Staley.<lb/>
While Bettis, who announced prior to the<lb/>
season that this would be his final season,<lb/>
is still the between-the-tackles punisher,<lb/>
Parker provides that burst of speed to break<lb/>
to the corners and has several runs this<lb/>
year of 40 yards or more.<lb/>
While Parker has been relatively quiet<lb/>
in the playoffs, Bettis has played amaz-<lb/>
ingly well. With the prospect of playing<lb/>
in the Super Bowl in his final game in<lb/>
his hometown, he is the only Steelers<lb/>
player find the end zone in all three of<lb/>
Pittsburgh's road wins.<lb/>
Helping the running game has been<lb/>
the play of Roethlisberger. "Big Ben"<lb/>
was the AFC's highest rated passer in the<lb/>
playoffs and has done a tremendous job of<lb/>
distributing the football. No one Pittsburgh<lb/>
receiver has caught more than five balls in<lb/>
a game and only one, Cedrick Wilson, has<lb/>
eclipsed the century mark in the playoffs.<lb/>
Wilson had three grabs for 102 yards in the<lb/>
Wild Card win at Cincinnati. Roethlisberger<lb/>
has completed 68 percent of his passes for 680<lb/>
yards and seven touchdowns passes to just one<lb/>
interception for a quarterback rating of 124.8<lb/>
in the playoffs.<lb/>
The offense for Pittsburgh, while having<lb/>
great game plans, has not had to do a whole<lb/>
lot because the Steel Curtain defense has<lb/>
given the offense a short field most of the<lb/>
time. Pittsburgh has forced six turnovers in<lb/>
three games and should have been seven If<lb/>
Troy Polamalu's interception of Peyton Man-<lb/>
ning would have stood. The Steelers have also<lb/>
recorded 11 sacks in those three wins, led by<lb/>
linebacker Joey Porter's three. Pittsburgh has<lb/>
gone on the road and shut down the AFC's top<lb/>
three teams and did so by taking apart three<lb/>
of the NFL's top six offenses.<lb/>
The Steelers are the first six seed to reach<lb/>
the Super Bowl and the first team since the<lb/>
1985 New England Patriots to win three road<lb/>
games en route to the Super Bowl. The '85<lb/>
Patriots were routed by the Chicago Bears in<lb/>
Super Bowl XX, 46-10. That is a fate the 2005<lb/>
Steelers would like to avoid in their attempt<lb/>
to win Pittsburgh the fifth Super Bowl title<lb/>
in franchise history and its first since 1979,<lb/>
when the 23-year-old Roethlisberger was still<lb/>
three years away from being born.<lb/>

'Hawks overlooked no more<lb/>
Seahawks finally in NFL title garne<lb/>
RON CLEMENTS<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
The 15-3 Seattle Seahawks enter Super<lb/>
Bowl XL as the NFC's top seed with an expe-<lb/>
rienced head coach who has a Super Bowl<lb/>
title on his resume, the NFL's MVP, a Pro Bowl<lb/>
quarterback and a defense that led the NFL in<lb/>
sacks in 2005 - and they're the underdog?<lb/>
This is creating quite the chip on the<lb/>
collective shoulders of Seattle players. The<lb/>
NFC Champions are a four-point dog to<lb/>
the AFC's six-seed entering the playoffs,<lb/>
the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 14-5 Steelers<lb/>
won three straight road games to win the<lb/>
AFC and get to the Super Bowl.<lb/>
Despite going 10-0 at home this year,<lb/>
including playoff demolitions of the Wash-<lb/>
ington Redskins and Carolina Panthers, the<lb/>
Seahawks were tabbed as the underdog for Super<lb/>
Bowl XL in Detroit by Las Vegas oddsmakers.<lb/>
Super Bowl XL will seem like a road<lb/>
game for the Seahawks, being that Detroit<lb/>
is just a couple-hour drive from Pittsburgh<lb/>
and Seattle has been tabbed as the "visit-<lb/>
ing" team by the NFL. Seattle will wear<lb/>
their home uniforms, however, because<lb/>
Pittsburgh Head Coach Bill Cowher<lb/>
requested that his team be allowed to wear<lb/>
their white visitor jerseys.<lb/>
Seattle, playing in its first Super Bowl<lb/>
in its 30-year franchise history, has been<lb/>
the most overlooked team in the NFL for<lb/>
years, and for good reason. This year was<lb/>
the first season the Seahawks had won a<lb/>
playoff game since 1984. They were embar-<lb/>
rassed in their last two playoff appearances<lb/>
- last year at home against St. Louis and<lb/>
in 2003 in overtime at Green Bay when<lb/>
quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said after<lb/>
winning the coin toss, "We want the ball<lb/>
and we're gonna score<lb/>
On the second play of the overtime<lb/>
period, Hasselbeck threw an interception<lb/>
to Green Bay's Al Harris, who returned it<lb/>
for a touchdown and a Packers' win.<lb/>
This year, Hasselbeck has been a com-<lb/>
pletely different player. He was the NFC's<lb/>
highest rated passer in the regular season<lb/>
and in the postseason. When league MVP<lb/>
running back Shaun Alexander left the game<lb/>
against Washington with a concussion, Has-<lb/>
selbeck led the way for the Seahawks, run-<lb/>
ning in the deciding touchdown himself.<lb/>
In his seventh NFL season, and fifth<lb/>
in Seattle, Hasselbeck has become one<lb/>
the NFL's best quarterbacks, and has done<lb/>
so very much under the radar. Consider<lb/>
that in 2003, he was left off the initial Pro<lb/>
Bowl roster despite throwing for over 3,800<lb/>
yards with 26 touchdown passes to just<lb/>
15 interceptions. Philadelphia's Donovan<lb/>
McNabb was originally selected ahead of<lb/>
Hasselbeck, despite throwing for just 16<lb/>
touchdowns and 11 interceptions that year.<lb/>
Alexander is another player that is<lb/>
overshadowed by other running backs.<lb/>
Even in college, Alexander's career at<lb/>
Alabama was secondary to that of 1999<lb/>
Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne from<lb/>
Wisconsin. For the last three seasons, Alex-<lb/>
ander's brilliance was second-fiddle to San<lb/>
Diego's I ,il i.iini.m Tomlinson This year,<lb/>
Alexander finally broke out and entered<lb/>
the spotlight. He led the NFL in rushing<lb/>
yards with 1,880 and an amazing 5.1<lb/>
yard-per-carry average as he set the NFL's<lb/>
single-season touchdown record with 28<lb/>
to earn himself the league's MVP award.<lb/>
With all the firepower the Seahawks<lb/>
have on offense, including two Pro Bowl<lb/>
offensive linemen, wide receivers Darrel<lb/>
Jackson and Peter Warrick and play-<lb/>
making tight end Jerramy Stevens, it's the<lb/>
Seahawks defense that has been amazingly<lb/>
impressive in the postseason.<lb/>
With two rookie linebackers and a<lb/>
veteran front four that includes former St.<lb/>
Louis Ram and Super Bowl winner Grant<lb/>
Wistrom, the Seahawks led the NFL in sacks<lb/>
this year with a mind-blowing 50 -an aver-<lb/>
age of over three per game. The Seahawks<lb/>
have been outstanding at shutting down<lb/>
the opposing team's best player in the play-<lb/>
offs and stifling the run. Washington's Pro<lb/>
Bowl running back Clinton Portis managed<lb/>
just 41 yards against Seattle in its 20-10<lb/>
defeat while the Carolina Panthers were<lb/>
limited to 36 yards of rushing while their<lb/>
playmaking receiver, Steve Smith, caught<lb/>
just five passes for 33 yards and was held<lb/>
out of the end zone by the Seattle "D<lb/>
Going against a team that mirrors itself<lb/>
with a young quarterback that doesn't<lb/>
make many mistakes, a punishing running<lb/>
game, a play-making tight end, a stifling<lb/>
defense and a veteran coaching staff with<lb/>
Super Bowl experience, Seattle has a tough<lb/>
task. But, then again, winning the Super<lb/>
Bowl is never easy. Mike Holmgren knows<lb/>
that. He's already won one.<lb/>

Our View<lb/>
Creating new paths<lb/>
shouldn't mean<lb/>
creating more mud<lb/>
"Do not go where the path may lead - go<lb/>
instead where there is no path and leave a trail"<lb/>
- Ralph Waldo Emerson<lb/>
I'm afan of making my own way in the world, literally.<lb/>
Although rarely math-minded, I do hold in esteem<lb/>
the rule that says "the shortest distance between<lb/>
two points is a straight line I'm typically strapped<lb/>
for time or in a hurry to get out of the cold, so I<lb/>
often find myself leaving one place and head-<lb/>
ing in a straight line toward my next destination.<lb/>
Doing so requires crossing streets and intersec-<lb/>
tions at odd angles, stepping over various tree<lb/>
roots or mulched areas and cutting through<lb/>
grass and various hedges, because unfortu-<lb/>
nately there isn't a nice, paved straight line that<lb/>
runs from my front door to Joyner Library.<lb/>
I'm not sure the ECU lawn maintenance crews<lb/>
endorse Emerson's philosophy or my interpre-<lb/>
tation, however.<lb/>
There are wonderful paved pathways all around<lb/>
campus, wide enough to accommodate several<lb/>
people at once and leave room to go around<lb/>
the slow walkers or move aside for bikers.<lb/>
These paths regularly coincide with my straight-line<lb/>
treks, which is great because they aren't muddy.<lb/>
What I don't understand is the new trend to walk<lb/>
in the same direction of the nice, paved paths<lb/>
on campus - just not on them.<lb/>
Unlike randomly cutting across areas like the mall,<lb/>
which rarely leaves atrail, this new trend has begun<lb/>
to make its mark, but doesn't lead anywhere new.<lb/>
The new paths (adjacent to the paved ones) are<lb/>
muddy and cause the nice, paved pathways to be<lb/>
muddy also because the grass that would help<lb/>
absorb excess water has been trampled into oblivion.<lb/>
I encourage everyone to strike out, both literally<lb/>
and figuratively, and create new paths for them-<lb/>
selves as the semester continues. But if there is<lb/>
already a nice, paved path to your destination of<lb/>
choice, make the most of it<lb/>
H Pirate Rant<lb/>
Eric Gilmore takes a moment to apologize<lb/>
Let me clarify<lb/>
ERIC GILMORE<lb/>
SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
It's easy to sit behind a com-<lb/>
puter screen and take jabs at<lb/>
public figures. As a columnist<lb/>
and senior writer, it's my job to<lb/>
inform, report and sometimes<lb/>
question decisions of those in<lb/>
charge.<lb/>
I want to publicly apologize<lb/>
for the way my words were<lb/>
misconstrued in Wednesday's<lb/>
column entitled "Recruiting<lb/>
rankings can't be judged on Sign-<lb/>
ing Day In the second to last<lb/>
paragraph, I accused former ECU<lb/>
head football coach John Thomp-<lb/>
son of having "a lack of ethical<lb/>
standards" involving recruiting<lb/>
players with character.<lb/>
Little did I know that the<lb/>
comment would inflame a threat<lb/>
against TEC claiming a lawsuit by<lb/>
someone affiliated with Thomp-<lb/>
son. And that a concerned reader<lb/>
"hopes TEC has some evidence of<lb/>
unethical behavior because it's<lb/>
going to cost them<lb/>
First, what exactly are ethics?<lb/>
According to Webster's Ninth<lb/>
New Collegiate Dictionary, ethics<lb/>
is "conforming to accepted pro-<lb/>
fessional standards of conduct<lb/>
Many educators and coaches<lb/>
refer to Code of Ethics of the<lb/>
Education Profession as adopted<lb/>
by the 1975 NEA Representa-<lb/>
tive Assembly. The document<lb/>
breaks down principles into two<lb/>
sections, commitment to the<lb/>
student and commitment to the<lb/>
profession. But aside from the<lb/>
31-year-old document, ethics are<lb/>
governed by the various interpre-<lb/>
tations by individual coaches.<lb/>
According to Ralph and<lb/>
Michael Sabcock, co-authors of<lb/>
Coaching: A Realistic Perspective,<lb/>
coaches who often practice a<lb/>
"lack of ethical standards" "are<lb/>
ambitious and anxious to move<lb/>
up the coaching ranks on the<lb/>
basis of their team's won-lost<lb/>
record, they are afraid for their<lb/>
jobs or they are dishonest<lb/>
Regular citizens educators'<lb/>
and coaches' ethical principles<lb/>
fall into three different catego-<lb/>
ries: high, low or none at all.<lb/>
So if Thompson was guided by<lb/>
a "lack of ethical standards as<lb/>
previously stated, he would fall<lb/>
neither into the high nor none<lb/>
at all categories.<lb/>
With that being said, the<lb/>
point I failed to clearly convey<lb/>
was about the type of players that<lb/>
Thompson recruited versus the<lb/>
athletes that current Head Coach<lb/>
Skip Holtz inked on Wednesday.<lb/>
Not that Thompson signed axe<lb/>
murders or serial killers, but<lb/>
only a select few tout the same<lb/>
resume in the character category<lb/>
as Holtz's recruits.<lb/>
Cory Dowless, an offensive<lb/>
lineman from Franklinville, N.C.<lb/>
is a member of the Beta Club<lb/>
and National Honor Society.<lb/>
Linebacker Nick Johnson from<lb/>
Charlotte will bring a 4.12 GPA<lb/>
into Greenville next year. Both<lb/>
were announced during the<lb/>
same press conference that Holtz<lb/>
revealed that five Thompson<lb/>
recruits were transferring while<lb/>
yet another - that makes three<lb/>
- is suspended.<lb/>
Consider the recruiting phi-<lb/>
losophy of Holtz's coaching staff<lb/>
that prides itself on height, char-<lb/>
acter and potential.<lb/>
"It's not going to be one of<lb/>
those deals, okay, we just signed<lb/>
a bunch of great players, but in<lb/>
three years what happened to the<lb/>
rest of that class said current<lb/>
recruiting coordinator Donnie<lb/>
Kirkpatrick following a press con-<lb/>
ference announcing the signees.<lb/>
"The new recruits are going<lb/>
to be here and represent the uni-<lb/>
versity very, very well<lb/>
Does Thompson's recruiting<lb/>
philosophy make him unethical?<lb/>
No it does not, and it was not my<lb/>
intention to make any reader<lb/>
believe so, nor do I believe it<lb/>
myself. Did the now unemployed<lb/>
coach violate NCAA standards<lb/>
while at ECU? Not that I know of,<lb/>
and I certainly wasn't accusing<lb/>
him of any such behavior. Did<lb/>
I poorly choose my words? Yes,<lb/>
and for that I retract that specific<lb/>
clause in my Wednesday's Sports<lb/>
opinion article.<lb/>

In My Opinion<lb/>
(KRT) When it comes to<lb/>
assessing the state of America's<lb/>
largest fighting force, Defense<lb/>
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is an<lb/>
Army of one.<lb/>
"The force is not broken<lb/>
Rumsfeld insisted last week.<lb/>
"It's battle-hardened. It's not a<lb/>
peacetime force that has been in<lb/>
barracks or garrisons <lb/>
"It's not broken, it's battle-<lb/>
hardened" puts us in mind of<lb/>
the Monty Python skit about the<lb/>
man who brings a dead parrot<lb/>
back to the pet shop. "No, no, he's<lb/>
not dead, he's he's restin the<lb/>
shop owner says. "Remarkable<lb/>
bird, the Norwegian Blue<lb/>
Contrary to Rumsfeld's<lb/>
sanguine remarks, two studies<lb/>
released in January said that<lb/>
three years of combat in Afghani-<lb/>
stan and Iraq, coupled with<lb/>
related recruiting and retention<lb/>
problems, have severely strained<lb/>
the Army. A study done for the<lb/>
Pentagon by military analyst<lb/>
Andrew Krepinevich says the<lb/>
Army has been reduced to a "thin<lb/>
green line Another study, done<lb/>
for congressional Democrats,<lb/>
cited a risk of "breaking the force<lb/>
While those two studies were<lb/>
getting all the publicity, a copy of<lb/>
the Pentagon's latest "Quadren-<lb/>
nial Defense Review" was being<lb/>
leaked to InsideDefense.com, a<lb/>
Web site for military insiders. In<lb/>
opaque bureaucratic language,<lb/>
the QDR comes to largely the<lb/>
same conclusions as the other<lb/>
two studies: "For the foreseeable<lb/>
future, steady state operations,<lb/>
including operations as part of<lb/>
a long war against terrorist net-<lb/>
works, and the associated rotation<lb/>
base and sustainment require-<lb/>
ments, will be the main deter-<lb/>
minant for sizing U.S. forces<lb/>
In other words, as long as<lb/>
the Army is going to rotate units<lb/>
in and out of Iraq, it may not be<lb/>
broken, but it's not going to be<lb/>
able to do much of anything else.<lb/>
Long term, the QDR says, the<lb/>
Pentagon better start planning<lb/>
for how it would deal with a "near<lb/>
peer" competitor, i.e China,<lb/>
with a downsized U.S. force.<lb/>
So that's three reports - one<lb/>
done by an independent analyst,<lb/>
one done for his political oppo-<lb/>
nents and one done inside the<lb/>
Pentagon itself - that seem to<lb/>
dispute Rumsfeld's "don't worry,<lb/>
be happy" views.<lb/>
Rep. Ike Skelton of Missouri,<lb/>
the top Democrat on the House<lb/>
Armed Services Committee,<lb/>
released a letter he wrote Jan.<lb/>
26 to Rumsfeld. Skelton said the<lb/>
Army's worn-out equipment has<lb/>
placed the force "at strategic risk<lb/>
and estimated the cost of replac-<lb/>
ing or repairing it at $35 billion.<lb/>
The figure continues to grow, he<lb/>
said, and doesn't Include the cost<lb/>
of modernizing the Army, which<lb/>
he said could exceed $80 billion.<lb/>
Finally, there is this assess-<lb/>
ment from Gen. George Casey,<lb/>
the Army's top commander in<lb/>
Iraq: "The forces are stretched<lb/>
and I don't think there's any<lb/>
question about that<lb/>
Today's Army is a lethal fight-<lb/>
ing force. But how long it can stay<lb/>
that way, given Rumsfeld's lousy<lb/>
pre-war planning and non-exis-<lb/>
tent post-war planning, is an open<lb/>
question. So is this: How does<lb/>
this man keep his job? Remark-<lb/>
able bird, this Don Rumsfeld.<lb/>

Dear Editor,<lb/>
It is the year 2006 and we're<lb/>
still putting up with this racist<lb/>
crap! We should abolish black<lb/>
history month? America would<lb/>
not be what it is today without<lb/>
our contribution - our hero's,<lb/>
our diversity, our inventions,<lb/>
our marches, our bloodshed, our<lb/>
sweat, our chains, our leaders and<lb/>
our white followers. America was<lb/>
built on the backs of black men,<lb/>
women and children.<lb/>
"BHM a ploy to distract black<lb/>
people?" It is not one month<lb/>
put aside to say this all you are<lb/>
in a month. It's a monument - a<lb/>
torch - passed from year to year,<lb/>
generation to generation to say<lb/>
thank you for all your accom-<lb/>
plishments, for all your struggles,<lb/>
all your sacrifices, your restless<lb/>
spirit that would not give up in<lb/>
the face of adversity.<lb/>
The words of Morgan Free-<lb/>
man were taken out of context.<lb/>
"You cannot regulate all that we<lb/>
are in a month but you can<lb/>
make sure that all we've been<lb/>
through is not forgotten by set-<lb/>
ting aside a month.<lb/>
"They must, as a people, work<lb/>
to reduce the behaviors and atti-<lb/>
tudes that perpetuate negative<lb/>
stereotypes It's the ignorance of<lb/>
people like you that keeps these<lb/>
stereotypes going. You cannot<lb/>
judge a whole race of people on<lb/>
what a few do.<lb/>
"The past is the past The<lb/>
past is my future, the past is my<lb/>
tomorrow, the past is my pres-<lb/>
ent. Every time I listen to the<lb/>
stories my grandmother tells of<lb/>
her grandmother being beaten<lb/>
with a rod 80 times for taking a<lb/>
piece of meat to feed her child,<lb/>
then having salt rubbed in the<lb/>
wounds, I am reminded of how<lb/>
far we have come.<lb/>
The past is my tomorrow<lb/>
when I have to watch a movie in<lb/>
class to remind me of the harsh<lb/>
realities that blacks had to suffer<lb/>
at the hands of the white man.<lb/>
The past is my reality when I<lb/>
have to read this article to remind<lb/>
me there will always be racism<lb/>
and discrimination.<lb/>
Patrina Edwards<lb/>
Senior<lb/>
Business Management<lb/>
The article about "First Love" yesterday was decaderjh<lb/>
and pathetic, containing unrealistic ideals because of<lb/>
dumb movies and books. This amounts to total cob'<lb/>
fusion to females. For instance, a ranter complainetf<lb/>
about not going on "traditional dates That's youf<lb/>
darn fault. Why? It's because you place all those guys-<lb/>
who have done so, or who would, in the "friends'<lb/>
zone. . i<lb/>
If Social Security cards are so important (i.e. getting-a,<lb/>
job, getting driver's license, etc.) then why in the world-<lb/>
are they made of paper? Shouldn't they be plastic?- -<lb/>
For the people wondering where the stereotypes fr-<lb/>
sororitiesfraternities came from, I have solved the!<lb/>
mystery. You guys pick and choose carbon copies<lb/>
to join you. When I was dressed up, I got plenty j<lb/>
fliers, which I promptly recycled, and when I was!<lb/>
dressed in sweat pants, I didn't receive one. Hmmrfl;<lb/>
imagine that!<lb/>
To the girl who wants guys to take her to dinner and<lb/>
a movie. What is this, 1951?<lb/>
I am sick of hearing people talk crap about North<lb/>
Carolina. No one put a gun to your head and made<lb/>
you come here. So if it's that bad, then please go back<lb/>
up north where you came from!<lb/>
To the girl who said, "it's not a big deal" about asking<lb/>
for a girl's number. If it's not a big deal then why ap<lb/>
all girls scared to ask a guy for his number.<lb/>
How could that beautiful girl on Tuesday's paper lie-<lb/>
depressed? ; <lb/>
I am so sick of the drunk people that get off the down<lb/>
town express bus at River Pointe on the weekends and<lb/>
cannot just walk quietly back to their apartment. I ant<lb/>
tired of waking up at all hours hearing people talking<lb/>
fighting, hollering, shooting fireworks outside my<lb/>
window And by the way, I see you peeing behind<lb/>
the dumpsters you idiots.<lb/>
Maybe the reason so many doctors are considered<lb/>
cold, arrogant and rude is because so many of them!<lb/>
have neglected their early composition classes ut<lb/>
which you were supposed to learn effective commu-<lb/>
nication as evidenced in the New York Times and the<lb/>
News & Observer.<lb/>
OMG! We got an awesome recruiting class. I love Terry<lb/>
Holland and Skip Holtz. Start planning the trip to the<lb/>
Bowl game now.<lb/>
To the SRC whiner, if you don't like all the people<lb/>
using the SRC, maybe you can go somewhere else.<lb/>
And if you don't like "older people" being there, get<lb/>
over it. Can't wait until you interview for a job with<lb/>
an "older person<lb/>
To the person who is working on their pre-med biology<lb/>
degree, reading the paper is a way to get news. It's a<lb/>
fact of life, not just English class.<lb/>
Why does the staff at ECU, the people who are here to<lb/>
assist students, have to be so grouchy to those students'<lb/>
all the time? I know you are inundated day in and<lb/>
day out with questions, but that's what you are paid<lb/>
for. We pay good money for our education and all the<lb/>
services that go along with it. Smile once in awhile!<lb/>
It's 40 degrees outside. Let's leave the thermostat oh<lb/>
68 at least. I mean, it's the winter.<lb/>
"Support Our Troops" stickers and LiveStrong bands<lb/>
are not a fashion trend, they have a meaning behind<lb/>
them!<lb/>
Pre-med student, not only do you need that English'<lb/>
class, but you also need to hire an English tutor. You-<lb/>
obviously haven't mastered the grammatical skills<lb/>
that are usually attained after first grade. I don't'<lb/>
want a doctor who is ignorant of current events and<lb/>
can't even use proper grammar in a Pirate Rant. Oh;<lb/>
and it goes without saying that you should give up<lb/>
on the medical school idea right now. Perhaps 'a<lb/>
job at McDonald's would better suit you. Wait <lb/>
nevermind, that career requires too much use of the<lb/>
English language.<lb/>
The employees at most of the food spots on campus,<lb/>
especially The Galley, have the worst attitudes<lb/>
around! If they don't like serving people, then find<lb/>
a new job!<lb/>
People, is it really so hard to re-rack your weights in<lb/>
the gym when you're done?<lb/>
I wear Duke shirts around campus because I am not only<lb/>
a lifelong Duke fan, but also a Duke graduate. Unless<lb/>
- and until - ECU wins a trophy in anything, back off<lb/>
I would enjoy presidential speeches much more if<lb/>
there weren't a 30 second pause for congress to give'a<lb/>
standing ovation after every statement Bush made.<lb/>
Did you know there is a higher rate of cancer for<lb/>
teachers in the Bate Building than any other building<lb/>
on campus? It is actually considered a "sick" building.<lb/>
Have fun business students.<lb/>
The hardest thing is to watch someone you love so<lb/>
much love someone else.<lb/>
Anyone who has ever eaten at West End Dinning Hall<lb/>
knows Ms. Terry. She is the sweetest lady you will ever<lb/>
meet. A person can live forever, and he will never come<lb/>
across someone with as much character, and as much<lb/>
love for us students as Ms. Terry.<lb/>
0MG, pick up your feet when you walk your shoes<lb/>
cannot be that heavy! And don't even try to say that's it's<lb/>
because you have on clogsslip-ons because that is BS!<lb/>
The computer labs are where I go to do work for school,<lb/>
not socialize with my friends. Please be courteous and<lb/>
shut up when other people are trying to work.<lb/>
Why do people complain that the meals on campus<lb/>
are not good? The dining halls are not always good<lb/>
but the new "pirate meals" give you good more healthy<lb/>
choices to eat. Fast food is not good - use your meals<lb/>
because you already paid for them.<lb/>
If I hear one more person at an apartment complex<lb/>
office tell me that my pet(s) are going to cause damage<lb/>
and I cannot have them I will snap! Or worse, they<lb/>
tell me I can have them but then force me to pay a<lb/>
God-awful amount of money as a nonrefundable<lb/>
deposit. If I have to pay 400 dollars to keep my pet(s)<lb/>
(who are a part of the family), then I might as well let<lb/>
them excrete all over the place a day before I hand my<lb/>
keys back in so I can get my money's worth!<lb/>

Campus Confessions:<lb/>
I fantasize about my ex-girlfriend all<lb/>
the time.<lb/>
I got caught making out by my<lb/>
girlfriend's parents at the movie<lb/>
theater last week. They were making<lb/>
out, too.<lb/>
I pierced my penis on a dare and<lb/>
now it Is infected to a very disgusting,<lb/>
unhealthy degree.<lb/>
I sing "It's Raining Men" loudly in the<lb/>
car when I am driving to work and<lb/>
I am a straight man.<lb/>
I have a massive crush on one of the<lb/>
West End lunch ladies.<lb/>
Last year I had to steal a toothbrush<lb/>
from the student store because I was<lb/>
out of money and decline.<lb/>
I like the smell of mothballs and<lb/>
gasoline.<lb/>
I hate my sister because she is too<lb/>
much like me and it upsets me to be<lb/>
around me.<lb/>
If I don't shower a certain way, in<lb/>
a certain order, I have to start over.<lb/>
It takes me at least 40 minutes to<lb/>
shower.<lb/>
I accidentally had sex with<lb/>
my friend's girlfriend before we lived<lb/>
together. It was an accident because<lb/>
she is my new roommate's sister.<lb/>
I'm really lazy. I hardly everwalkto class.<lb/>
I just take the bus everywhere.<lb/>
All I want in life is to get it on in the<lb/>
dark rooms in Jenkins.<lb/>
My roommate is really sweet, but I<lb/>
can't stand the fact that she hardly<lb/>
ever leaves the room. Let's get out<lb/>
and do something for once.<lb/>
I constantly get caught singing along<lb/>
to the music in my car.<lb/>
To the guy who came into the<lb/>
computer lab I work in and who I<lb/>
saw walking on campus a few days<lb/>
later, our eyes have only met twice<lb/>
and we've never really spoken, but<lb/>
I haven't been able to stop thinking<lb/>
about you. Everything about you from<lb/>
your "I don't give a damn" clothes, to<lb/>
your short beard, to your gorgeous<lb/>
eyes, makes me melt. I can't wait to<lb/>
see you again.<lb/>
How about I was playing two guys,<lb/>
and it turns out they know each<lb/>
other oops.<lb/>
I'm a guy and I have a crush on my<lb/>
roommate he's a guy too.<lb/>
One day I want to grow up to be a<lb/>
stripper.<lb/>
Sometimes I sing the "Happy Birthday"<lb/>
song to myself two times while I wash<lb/>
my hands just to be sure they are<lb/>
clean.<lb/>

SCOTTY WILLIAMS<lb/>
SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
Before it hit theaters, Annapo-<lb/>
lis' previews gave it the look of<lb/>
a middle-notch movie about<lb/>
making it in the harshest of<lb/>
harsh environments. The angry<lb/>
looks of Tyrese Gibson and the<lb/>
stone cold stares of James Franco<lb/>
indicated this movie was going<lb/>
to be an exercise in beating the<lb/>
odds. It had the typical military<lb/>
movie sneer, the angry words<lb/>
and clenched teeth that said this<lb/>
movie would let the world know<lb/>
that not only does hell exist, but<lb/>
it's located in Annapolis, Md.<lb/>
Hell did exist in this<lb/>
movie, but it was in the eyes<lb/>
of viewers who felt tortured<lb/>
by the undying confusion -<lb/>
"What kind of movie is this?"<lb/>
Annapolis is one big<lb/>
disappointing package. I use<lb/>
the word package because<lb/>
this is not a navy movie. It's<lb/>
one big annoying conglom-<lb/>
eration of romance, boxing and<lb/>
a few misplaced rank stripes.<lb/>
Franco is Jake Huard, a young<lb/>
riveter who seeks to fulfill a<lb/>
lifelong dream (or a promise to<lb/>
his mother, they hint at both)<lb/>
United States Naval Academy in<lb/>
Maryland. Huard barely makes it<lb/>
in and deals with all the trouble<lb/>
of being a new recruit in the navy<lb/>
- commanding officers with ego<lb/>
problems, an interesting mix of<lb/>
roommates, intense physical con-<lb/>
ditioning and mental demands.<lb/>
Gibson is Midshipment Lt. Cole,<lb/>
a high-ranking officer (and<lb/>
Marine as luck would have it)<lb/>
who has it in for Huard. Luckily<lb/>
for him, another high-ranking<lb/>
officer is falling for him as he<lb/>
prepares to take on Cole in a<lb/>
boxing tournament. Weil get to<lb/>
that little problem later.<lb/>
This entire newspaper could<lb/>
be filled by my qualms with<lb/>
this movie. First, I've seen more<lb/>
military accuracy and realism in<lb/>
"Looney Tunes When I think<lb/>
about the writing of this movie,<lb/>
1 imagine director Justin Lin in<lb/>
a room with the writers asking,<lb/>
"This guy Gibson's a big, bad<lb/>
naval guy, but could we make<lb/>
him a Marine, too? Can we put<lb/>
an overweight fatso in this pres-<lb/>
tigious, selective Academy? I've<lb/>
got to have a fat guy<lb/>
The aforementioned "fat<lb/>
guy" is Vicellous Reon Shannon,<lb/>
and he honestly puts on a great<lb/>
performance. His character has<lb/>
more heart than Huard. It's clear<lb/>
AH, played by Jordana Brewster, inspects Jake Huard, played by James Franco, in th<lb/>
Annapolis<lb/>
that Shannon's character was cast<lb/>
to be comic relief, but he ends up<lb/>
more human and with more emo-<lb/>
tion than the stone-faced Franco.<lb/>
This is somewhat confusing.<lb/>
Speaking of confusion, this<lb/>
movie devotes so much of the<lb/>
storyline to a boxing tournament,<lb/>
you could swear you're watching<lb/>
Rocky Balboa with a high and<lb/>
tight haircut swinging at a bigger,<lb/>
more muscular Apollo Creed.<lb/>
This movie's major problem (if<lb/>
one can stand out among the<lb/>
rest) is it cannot figure out what<lb/>
kind of movie it wants to be.<lb/>
If it is trying to be a boxing<lb/>
movie, it deserves to be clubbed<lb/>
to the canvas. The boxing scenes<lb/>
are a flurry of blue and red gloves.<lb/>
After seeing quality boxing in<lb/>
movies like Cinderella Man and<lb/>
Million Dollar Baby, this just<lb/>
doesn't stand a fighting chance<lb/>
(yes, I went there with a pun):<lb/>

In our soon to be recurring<lb/>
series of featured music cities,<lb/>
this week's title takes us to the<lb/>
great state of Texas. The capital<lb/>
city of Austin boasts not only<lb/>
the biggest rotunda building in<lb/>
America, but also the moniker<lb/>
"The Live Music Capital of the<lb/>
World The Capitol building<lb/>
is even bigger than the Capitol<lb/>
building in Washington, D.C.<lb/>
Also equally as impressive are<lb/>
the many programs supported<lb/>
by the Austin city government<lb/>
in order to display the musical<lb/>
talents of the local area. This<lb/>
includes a music commission that<lb/>
was created by the city council to<lb/>
deal with everything related to<lb/>
the music industry, Web sites and<lb/>
even a musician hiring service<lb/>
to play functions of all kinds.<lb/>
Corporations ordering bands<lb/>
to play their functions are com-<lb/>
monplace in this city. This may<lb/>
seem a bit odd to most, but to Aus-<lb/>
tinites, this is the way we embrace<lb/>
our name. The city of Austin cre-<lb/>
ated the Austin music channel as<lb/>
an economic development proj-<lb/>
ect to showcase local music and<lb/>
musicians and display the diver-<lb/>
sity found throughout the city.<lb/>
Austin Music Partners<lb/>
launched Music and Entertain-<lb/>
ment TV Oct. 1, 2005 on chan-<lb/>
nel 15 on both Time Warner<lb/>
and Grande Communications<lb/>
stations. If TV isn't your deal<lb/>
because you are more of an out-<lb/>
doors type, then the Austin music<lb/>
festivals might be more to your<lb/>
liking. Even places such as Zilker<lb/>
Park host events year-round, not<lb/>
to mention the city club venues<lb/>
that hold entertainment.<lb/>
Another outdoor music fest,<lb/>
called "Live from the Plaza<lb/>
is a music concert that hap-<lb/>
pens during lunchtime at city<lb/>
hall every Friday between April<lb/>
and October, completely free of<lb/>
charge. As a side note, for the<lb/>
folks in Austin who can't make<lb/>
the concert, the shows are aired<lb/>
in their entirety on Austin chan-<lb/>
nel 6.<lb/>
Austin holds more music<lb/>
venues per capita than hot spots<lb/>
such as Memphis, Las Vegas, Nash-<lb/>
ville, Los Angeles and New York<lb/>
City. These venues have inspired<lb/>
the sounds of punk, ska, reggae,<lb/>
blues, jazz, funk, bluegrass, world,<lb/>
alternative, classical and country.<lb/>
Famous Texan musicians and<lb/>
groups include Willie Nelson,<lb/>
Janisjoplin, Lyle Lovett, Stevie Ray<lb/>
Vaughan, Selena and ZZ Top, who<lb/>
all have done the Austin scene.<lb/>
The Austin City Limits Music<lb/>
Festival is a music and art festi-<lb/>
val in Austin, typically held on<lb/>
a Friday, Saturday and Sunday<lb/>
toward the end of September. The<lb/>
festival is produced by the Austin<lb/>
City Limits television show and<lb/>
Waterloo Music and takes place in<lb/>
the aforementioned Zilker Park.<lb/>

Ten Tenors embark on their 'Larger Than Life' tour<lb/>

United States<lb/>

Auditorium. For more information, visit ticketmaster.com.<lb/>
The TeYi Tenors kick off<lb/>
a tour for their new album,<lb/>
Larger Than Life, in Raleigh<lb/>
this month and are making<lb/>
quite a buzz for themselves.<lb/>
For those unfamiliar with<lb/>
the Ten Tenors, they are an<lb/>
Australian vocal group that<lb/>
performs in a variety of musi-<lb/>
cal styles ranging from opera<lb/>
to pop to rock and beyond.<lb/>
They have performed along-<lb/>
side artists like Rod Stew-<lb/>
art, Andrea Boccelli, Alanis<lb/>
Morissette and Willie Nelson.<lb/>
Their international career<lb/>
started in Germany in 2001,<lb/>
when all of their 48 shows<lb/>
at two distinguished cabaret<lb/>
venues sold out. In addition to<lb/>
an amazing kick-start to a tour-<lb/>
ing career, this made the Ten<lb/>
Tenors the fastest selling act in<lb/>
the history of both venues.<lb/>
Since then, they have toured<lb/>
internationally at sold-out<lb/>
venues in Europe, Asia and Aus-<lb/>
tralia. In 2002, they made a guest<lb/>
appearance at the Eurovision<lb/>
Grand Prix in Germany before<lb/>
an audience of nearly 15,000<lb/>
people, not to mention that<lb/>
more than 20 million people<lb/>
were watching on television.<lb/>
To date, they have per-<lb/>
formed on three continents<lb/>
and have been seen by more<lb/>
than an estimated 77 million<lb/>
people. They exhibit a wide<lb/>
range of styles and take on<lb/>
the vocal challenges of every-<lb/>
thing from ABBA to opera.<lb/>
This year, they embark on<lb/>
a North American tour and<lb/>
will be performing at Raleigh<lb/>
Memorial Auditorium in early<lb/>
February. Their new CD, Larger<lb/>
Than Life, was released just last<lb/>
year on Rhino Records.<lb/>
They have received praise<lb/>
for their live performances -<lb/>
even landing a public television<lb/>
broadcast throughout the U.S.<lb/>
and Canada last December of<lb/>
their performance in Brisbane,<lb/>
Australia. But their tour isn't<lb/>
all that's been getting notice -<lb/>
Larger Than Life has been making<lb/>
quite the buzz for itself, too.<lb/>
Their previous CD, One Is<lb/>
Not Enough, climbed the Euro-<lb/>
pean pop charts to the top 10<lb/>
and in 2003 they were asked by<lb/>
Disney to record the Jungle Book<lb/>
2 theme song "Jungle Rhythm<lb/>
Not so surprisingly, the<lb/>
band is made up of 10 mem-<lb/>

After all, this movie<lb/>
cannot call itself a navy movie,<lb/>
otherwise lawyers should get<lb/>
involved from here. That's what<lb/>
was marketed, but not what<lb/>
was delivered. People who have<lb/>
gone through the experience<lb/>
of the U.S. Naval Academy will<lb/>
either roll in the aisles with<lb/>
laughter or outright walk away<lb/>
and ask for their money back.<lb/>
For all you feminists, you'll<lb/>
also be enthralled to hear that the<lb/>
leading woman in this movie, Jor-<lb/>
dana Brewster, is a high-ranking<lb/>
officer who's just weak enough to<lb/>
fall for a first-year plebe and treat<lb/>
him with kid gloves through the<lb/>
movie. I continually asked myself<lb/>
how this woman would've made<lb/>
her rank, with her getting a soft<lb/>
spot for Huard and all.<lb/>
There's not one time in<lb/>
the movie where Brewster's<lb/>
character does what a higher-<lb/>
ranking officer would do and<lb/>
wield a little bit of that power<lb/>
she holds. Instead of a strong<lb/>
female character, this woman is<lb/>
a pushover with a soft spot. With<lb/>
her actions, it would've made<lb/>
more sense to cast this character<lb/>
with the same rank as Huard<lb/>
instead of being a superior offi-<lb/>
cer. It would've made a lot more<lb/>
sense than making her the cool<lb/>
commander.<lb/>
Franco's leading man abilities<lb/>
need some more polish, because<lb/>
his character is supposed to<lb/>
undergo a change. Huard in the<lb/>
beginning is the same as Huard<lb/>
in the end, just with a few more<lb/>
pounds. Gibson's acting is better<lb/>
than Franco's, but only because<lb/>
Gibson just had to play the tough<lb/>
guy, without much dynamic.<lb/>
Gibson's becoming more type-<lb/>
cast with each movie, by the way.<lb/>
The movie's biggest successes<lb/>
are the hearty chuckles certain<lb/>
situations will render. Shannon's<lb/>
jokes and one-liners are great,<lb/>
and you'll genuinely get a belly<lb/>
laugh from some of the moments.<lb/>
Other than those few chuckles,<lb/>
this movie won't give you much<lb/>
to smile about. You'll be too busy<lb/>
scratching your head.<lb/>

Holtz hauls in 2006 recruiting class<lb/>
Pirates address depth,<lb/>
position concerns with<lb/>
27signees<lb/>
ERIC QILMORE<lb/>
SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
A late push helped boast<lb/>
ECU'S 2006 recruiting class as<lb/>
arguably the best since ECU<lb/>
joined Conference USA in 1997.<lb/>
Even with online recruiting<lb/>
services releasing recruits' every<lb/>
thought, the Skip Holtz coaching<lb/>
staff corralled a talented group<lb/>
sprinkled with some projects.<lb/>
Holtz signed 27 of the 46<lb/>
players that came to campus on<lb/>
official visits. Of the 27, nine are<lb/>
from North Carolina, eight are<lb/>
from Florida, and Georgia and<lb/>
South Carolina are represented<lb/>
with three players apiece.<lb/>
Quarterbacks<lb/>
Holtz showed his trust in red-<lb/>
shirt freshmen Robert Kass and<lb/>
Brett Clay by declining to sign<lb/>
a true quarterback. Holtz stated<lb/>
publicly that he doesn't want to<lb/>
waste his 85 allotted scholarships<lb/>
on signal callers. But by not sign-<lb/>
ing a quarterback, he will now<lb/>
be forced to rely on Kass, Clay or<lb/>
sophomore Patrick Pinkney once<lb/>
current starting quarterback,<lb/>
James Pinkney graduates.<lb/>
Grade - in<lb/>
Running Backs<lb/>
Holtz went into the recruiting<lb/>
process hoping to sign only one<lb/>
running back. Because former<lb/>
verbal commitment Kennard<lb/>
Reeves opted for Vanderbilt late<lb/>
in the game, the door was opened<lb/>
for the enigmatic Norman Whit-<lb/>
ley. The Richmond County back<lb/>
turned down BCS offers early in<lb/>
the recruiting process only to<lb/>
have them pulled later on.<lb/>
"That's the kind of kid that<lb/>
we want here said running<lb/>
backs coach Junior Smith refer-<lb/>
ring to the Shine Bowl MVP.<lb/>
"To have the confidence, to<lb/>
have a chip on their shoulder<lb/>
believing they're the best back<lb/>
in the countTy<lb/>
Fullback was an immediate<lb/>
concern that Holtz addressed in<lb/>
the form of Kevin Gidrey since<lb/>
Jermarcus Veal and Jason Pender<lb/>
both graduated. According to<lb/>
Holtz, Gidrey the 252 pound<lb/>
bruiser is a "big, thick, athletic<lb/>
son of a gun" who will compete<lb/>
for playing time as a freshman.<lb/>
Grade - B<lb/>
Reason Why: Holtz failed to<lb/>
corral Devven Sutton, a highly<lb/>
coveted fullback that could have<lb/>
been a goal line threat.<lb/>
Wide Receivers<lb/>
Recruiting coordinator and<lb/>
wide receivers coach Donnie<lb/>
Kirkpatrick couldn't stop brag-<lb/>
ging about how talented Javon<lb/>
Brumsey and late additions<lb/>
Dwayne Harris and DeMorio<lb/>
Waymon are.<lb/>
"Those guys are being signed<lb/>
so in two years, we won't have to<lb/>
rebuild, we'll be reloading said<lb/>
Kirkpatrick.<lb/>
Brumsey has the height nec-<lb/>
essary to climb the proverbial<lb/>
ladder to complete fade routes<lb/>
accompanied with blazing speed.<lb/>
"His strength is his speed<lb/>
(4.43), his height, which you<lb/>
can't coach and his hands said<lb/>
Northeastern High School coach<lb/>
Antonio Moore about Brumsey<lb/>
who chose the Pirates over N.C.<lb/>
State and Virginia.<lb/>
"I could make a whole list<lb/>
about his strengths. I couldn't<lb/>
finish without saying that Javon is<lb/>
a great kid and a great personality<lb/>
Grade- B<lb/>
Reason Why: Holtzsigned three<lb/>
very quality players, but missed<lb/>
out on some playmakers and also<lb/>
failed to ink a true tight end.<lb/>
Offensive Linemen<lb/>
Steve Shankweiler added<lb/>
some hogs to his offensive line-<lb/>
men troop in bringing along five<lb/>
newcomers. After graduating<lb/>
three starters, Holtz needed some<lb/>
immediate help while still secur-<lb/>
ing the future. Willie Barton, a<lb/>
320-pound JUCO transfer from<lb/>
Georgia Military should compete<lb/>
for a starting slot. Andrew Farr, a<lb/>
prep school transfer is rehabbing<lb/>
a knee injury, but will participate<lb/>
in spring practice.<lb/>
D.J. Scott, Sean Allen and<lb/>
Cory Dowless participated in<lb/>
ECU's summer camp. Scott, the<lb/>
highly regarded of the three was<lb/>
the first verbal commitment and<lb/>
never wavered from his decision.<lb/>
Doug Polochak hails from Nease<lb/>
High School, one of the premier<lb/>
schools in Florida.<lb/>
Grade - A-<lb/>
Reason Why: Holtz brought<lb/>
in five quality players, but only<lb/>
one potential 2006 starter.<lb/>
Defensive Linemen<lb/>
Ask any high school coach<lb/>
which the hardest position to<lb/>
recruit is and he will immediately<lb/>
answer with the defensive line.<lb/>
Luckily for the Pirates, defensive<lb/>
line coach Donnie Thompson is one<lb/>
of the best recruiters in t he state.<lb/>
Thompson personally plucked<lb/>
defensive ends from the region<lb/>
Skip Holtz speaks to the media at a press conference Wednesday afternoon as ECU announced its 2006 recruiting class.<lb/>
in 6-foot-7-inch Travis Melvin<lb/>
and 6-foot-6-inch Willie Smith.<lb/>
The Pirates also inked a couple<lb/>
of unknowns in Joe Council and<lb/>
Davion Holman.<lb/>
"Davion's got tremendous<lb/>
range said Dr. Phillips High<lb/>
School Head Coach Kevin Pettis<lb/>
about Davion Holman who<lb/>
turned down Nebraska. "His<lb/>
wing span is unbelievable. He's<lb/>
just a tall, rangy type of kid who<lb/>
gets after it real well<lb/>
Grade - A-<lb/>
Reason Why: Holtz signed<lb/>
plenty of potential, but no kids that<lb/>
are likely to compete immediately.<lb/>
Linebackers<lb/>
The seven linebackers will<lb/>
make Pirate fans forget about the<lb/>
four that recently graduated. With<lb/>
a slew of young talent already in<lb/>
the program, Holtz added veteran<lb/>
JUCO's in Orlando Farrow, Fred<lb/>
Wilson and Daniel Muhewzi. All<lb/>
three have legitimate height and<lb/>
size lacking in the younger players.<lb/>
Holtz inked four freshman<lb/>
players, all of which will take time<lb/>
to develop. Relative unknown<lb/>
Chris Atkins and Atlanta product<lb/>
Lorenzo Osborne will have to gain<lb/>
weight while middle linebacker<lb/>
prospects Nick and A.J. Johnson<lb/>
will have to develop their speed.<lb/>
Grade - A<lb/>
Secondary<lb/>
Holtz signed tall, rangy cor-<lb/>
ners while still maintaining<lb/>
hard hitting safeties. Convincing<lb/>
Melvin Patterson to play with his<lb/>
cousin Kasey Ross in the second-<lb/>
ary was a huge coup. Patterson<lb/>
chose ECU on Tuesday over N.C.<lb/>
State, but will need to rehab an<lb/>
ACL injury he suffered during the<lb/>
first game of his senior season.<lb/>
"Trying to find a weakness,<lb/>
I don't see a lot of them there<lb/>
said Santa Fe Head Coach Scott<lb/>
Pritchett about Patterson.<lb/>
"He's not perfect, but he's got<lb/>
a lot of strengths. I can't see a lot<lb/>
of negatives<lb/>
Corners Darryl Reynolds and<lb/>
Dekota Marshall, both over six<lb/>
feet and from the region both have<lb/>
the opportunity to play in 2006.<lb/>
Marshall, who bench presses 370<lb/>
pounds despite his 185 pound<lb/>
frame runs a 4.4 40-yard dash.<lb/>
"Dekota's potential is unlim-<lb/>
ited said 23-year Southwest<lb/>
Onslow Head Coach Phil Padgett.<lb/>
"It wouldn't shock me if he<lb/>
is playing on Sundays in four or<lb/>
five years<lb/>
Travis Simmons, a late addi-<lb/>
tion and Dan Wideman, a pos-<lb/>
sible academic casualty, are both<lb/>
considered projects.<lb/>
Grade - A-<lb/>
Reason Why: All players signed<lb/>
have great physical attributes,<lb/>
but little position experience.<lb/>
House Cleaning<lb/>
Holtz announced that five<lb/>
players have left the program citing<lb/>
playing time as their main con-<lb/>
cern. Cornerback Erode Jean, wide<lb/>
receiver Brian Howard, offensive<lb/>
linemen Zach Davis and Mike Wil-<lb/>
liams and defensive lineman Mike<lb/>
Horner will move on to I-AA schools.<lb/>
I il I in.in suspended<lb/>
Starting H-back Robert Till-<lb/>
man has been suspended from<lb/>
the team for the spring semes-<lb/>
ter. Holtz did not give a specific<lb/>
reason for the rising senior's sus-<lb/>
pension. Tillman caught 16 balls<lb/>
for 186 yards and one touchdown<lb/>
in six games before suffering a<lb/>
season-ending hamstring injury.<lb/>
MacDonaugh ends career<lb/>
Mike MacDonagh, a formej<lb/>
walk-on transfer from Wayne St.<lb/>
will no longer don football pads.<lb/>
MacDonagh finished with 11 tacli-<lb/>
les, including two for loss whilfc<lb/>
starting five games in each of the<lb/>
last two seasons. The defensive<lb/>
end suffered a neck injury during<lb/>
the final game of the seasoO<lb/>
causing a narrowing in his spine.<lb/>

Signing day: A recruiting bonanza, for whom?<lb/>
(KRT) On ESPNU, they're calling it "elec-<lb/>
tion-style" coverage. By the time it's over, the<lb/>
network's 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. (CST) special might<lb/>
make national signing day seem more like national<lb/>
signing week.<lb/>
College Sports TV will offer a more modest<lb/>
three hours of coverage Wednesday, beginning at<lb/>
3 p.m. Like its five-lettered competitor, the network<lb/>
will feature interviews with college coaches, high-<lb/>
lights of top recruits and live player commitment<lb/>
announcements.<lb/>
Alas, neither will be on the air at 9 a.m when<lb/>
a defensive tackle from Fort Lauderdale named<lb/>
Charles Deas is set to pledge to LSU, Auburn, Florida<lb/>
State or Nebraska.<lb/>
Not even Deas' coach, Mark James of Dillard<lb/>
High School, knows which school he will pick.<lb/>
"He told me he was going to shock the nation<lb/>
James told rivals.com.<lb/>
In fairness, you can understand why Deas<lb/>
and the 20 other recruits who are set to make live<lb/>
announcements Wednesday might have lost their<lb/>
perspective on things.<lb/>
The attention paid to recruits in the months<lb/>
leading to national signing day never has been<lb/>
greater.<lb/>
And it goes well beyond Web sites such as scout,<lb/>
com and rivals.com, which has 150,000 subscribers<lb/>
paying at least $9.95 per month for information,<lb/>
rumors and everything in between.<lb/>
"The amount of access they have to student-<lb/>
athletes is amazing top recruit Myron Rolle told a<lb/>
national panel examining recruiting ethics. "They<lb/>
can call you on your cell phone seven times a night<lb/>
and you're like, 'Didn't 1 give you an interview two<lb/>
minutes ago?' That can be overwhelming<lb/>
Rolle, a defensive back from New Jersey, said<lb/>
Monday he even had received attention from Flor-<lb/>
ida Gov. Jeb Bush, who text-messaged him while he<lb/>
visited Florida State's campus in November.<lb/>
Rolle recalled the message going like this: "I'm<lb/>
excited you're looking at Florida State. (Florida State<lb/>
President) T.K. Wetherell and I are friends. When<lb/>
you come to Tallahassee again, let's hook up with<lb/>
each other. Jeb Bush<lb/>
"There may have been a time when something<lb/>
like that shocked me University of Georgia<lb/>
President Michael Adams told the Atlanta<lb/>
journal-Constitution. "But I have been in this too<lb/>
long. Are our priorities out of order? The answer<lb/>
is, yes<lb/>
A love note from the brother of the commandei-<lb/>
in-chief notwithstanding, Rolle had committed<lb/>
orally to Florida State in September. So Bush, indeed,<lb/>
will get his chance to "hook up" with Rolle.<lb/>
You don't need a TV (or a newspaper) to keep<lb/>
tabs on your favorite school's recruiting class.<lb/>
Notre Dame will offer live coverage of coach<lb/>
Charlie Weis' 11 a.m. news conference on its Web<lb/>
site, und.com. Subscribers to Fighting Irish All-<lb/>
Access Monthly ($6.95month) can view a video<lb/>
highlight package featuring each Irish signee.<lb/>
Northwestern fans can check out coach Randy<lb/>
Walker's 6 p.m. news conference at NUsports.com,<lb/>

to signing day. Walker would rather see his current<lb/>
crop of players receive attention. And his focus on<lb/>
intangibles such as character and work ethic lead<lb/>
to relatively low rankings for his classes.<lb/>
Said assistant athletic director Mike Wolf: "You<lb/>
look at guys like Tim McGarigle, Mark Philmore and<lb/>
Shaun Herbert, they were ranked as the minimum-<lb/>
star recruits<lb/>
It's true. Rivals.com gave each two stars and<lb/>
ranked Northwestern's 2002 class 65th nationally.<lb/>
Actually it was tied for 65thwith Middle Tennes-<lb/>
see State.<lb/>
McGarigle, Philmore and Herbertall fourth-year<lb/>
players helped NUtieforthird in the Big Ten last season.<lb/>
If Northwestern is going low-key, Illinois is<lb/>
going high-key. Its Web site, fightingillini.com,<lb/>
will feature live online chats and interviews with<lb/>
coaches, an all-day "war room" blog that begins at<lb/>
7 a.m. and streaming video of coach Ron Zook's<lb/>
3:30 p.m. news conference.<lb/>
Cassie Arner, the school's associate director<lb/>
of athletic public relations, devised the plan. And<lb/>
Zook embraced it.<lb/>
"We want to make the biggest bang anyone has<lb/>
ever seen Arner said. "People know everything<lb/>
that's going on with recruiting now because of the<lb/>
Internet: If you're not helping them, then they're<lb/>
going to go somewhere else. We want to be their<lb/>
best source of information<lb/>
And, coming off a winless Big Ten season, the<lb/>

ticket sales and boost a Memorial Stadium renova-<lb/>

Arner's original plan called for an online show<lb/>
during which current Illinois players and coaches<lb/>
would hold clipboards and discuss the signings,<lb/>
almost like ESPN's coverage of the NFL draft. But<lb/>
Illinois' compliance department nixed that idea.<lb/>
Still, Illinois will break ground with its signing<lb/>
day bonanza.<lb/>
"We're going to cover this just like we cover a<lb/>

a small barricade, which sur-<lb/>

Seahawks running back Shaun<lb/>
Alexander.<lb/>
Right about now, I'm starting<lb/>
to think this might not be an<lb/>
intimate one-on-one chat.<lb/>
And then things get weird.<lb/>
Alexander starts talking<lb/>
about his spiritual beliefs while,<lb/>
in the next booth over, alleged<lb/>

Gottfried then wanders over<lb/>
to Alexander and asks him to<lb/>
tell the funniest joke he knows.<lb/>
Alexander says he'll get back<lb/>
to him. Gottfried then tells<lb/>
Alexander to repeat any dirty<lb/>

Hundreds of reporters converge<lb/>
in one glorious glob of media<lb/>

Alexander, besides graciously<lb/>

The league MVP has been wait-<lb/>

quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is<lb/>
the funniest guy on the team, of<lb/>
at least the one everyone laugh$<lb/>

a little vague.<lb/>
Gottfried traipses over to<lb/>
Hasselbeck's booth and tells<lb/>
him that Alexander singled him<lb/>

people in the world Hasse'beck<lb/>
says. "Those who are good at<lb/>
math and those who aren't<lb/>
OK, it's not sidesplitting<lb/>
funny, but on a day when the<lb/>
comediansroving reporters<lb/>
Include Gottfried and Tom<lb/>
Arnold, we'll take any semblance<lb/>
of humor we can get. In fact,<lb/>
we'll take anything to relieve the<lb/>
torture of too many stories from<lb/>
too many angles in too loose of<lb/>
a format.<lb/>
Solemn questions are followed<lb/>
by goofy questions which lead to<lb/>
inane questions. A reporter from<lb/>
a Spanish-language media outlet<lb/>
conducts interviews with a hand<lb/>
puppet. The puppet sports Troy<lb/>
I'olamalu-style hair. Cute, but<lb/>
can the puppet make a deadline?<lb/>
Some questions even address<lb/>
football, but that doesn't neces-<lb/>
sarily improve the situation. For<lb/>
example, Seattle coach Mike<lb/>
Holmgren offers this revealing<lb/>
analysis into the key to Super<lb/>
Bowl XL, which will be played<lb/>
this Sunday:<lb/>
"The difference in the game<lb/>
will be who turns the ball over<lb/>
the fewest times Holmgren said.<lb/>
While 1 am unable to confirm<lb/>
this at press time, rumor also has<lb/>
it that the team who scores the<lb/>
most points will win.<lb/>
The Seahawks are trapped for<lb/>
an hour with no easy escape, but<lb/>
at least they can take solace in the<lb/>
Steelers suffering the same plight.<lb/>
The Steelers, too, find them-<lb/>
selves surrounded by microphones<lb/>
attached to sporadically coherent<lb/>
owners. Most seem very interested<lb/>
in finding out if Jerome Bettis is<lb/>
from Detroit.<lb/>
New York Giants defensive end<lb/>
Michael Strahan, masquerading as<lb/>
a reporter for The NFL Network,<lb/>
approaches Steelers receiver Hines<lb/>
Ward. I anticipate Strahan has a<lb/>
question but, alas, my instincts<lb/>
fail me. "The only man in football<lb/>
with a better smile than me is you<lb/>
Strahan tells Ward.<lb/>
Strahan says something about<lb/>
Ward trying to block him, then<lb/>
inquires whether Ward has a nas-<lb/>
tier visage in his facial repertoire.<lb/>
"Give me a mean mug he<lb/>
tells Ward.<lb/>
Ward scrunches up his face.<lb/>
He looks not unlike Gilbert<lb/>
Gottfried.<lb/>
Now that's funny. In a weird,<lb/>
awkward sort of way.<lb/>
