By law, the IRS must collect taxes as well as pay its own.<lb />
IRS investigates,<lb />
freezes refunds<lb />
Done without informing<lb />
public<lb />
LEESCHWARZ<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The IRS has decided to freeze<lb />
thousands of refunds it believes<lb />
may be fraudulent.<lb />
While the IRS maintains that<lb />
it is "very comfortable" when<lb />
it determines that someone<lb />
committed a fraudulent act, 80<lb />
percent of allegedly fraudulent<lb />
refunds were given either a<lb />
partial or full refund leading<lb />
some to believe the IRS Criminal<lb />
Investigation Office is simply on<lb />
a witch hunt.<lb />
About 75 percent of those who<lb />
had their refunds frozen were<lb />
low-income families attempting<lb />
to claim Earned Income Credit,<lb />
which is designed to help those<lb />
families rise from the depths of<lb />
poverty. This is leading some to<lb />
think ambiguous rules are the<lb />
reason for the confusion among<lb />
low-income families.<lb />
Since 1999, the IRS has<lb />
stopped $3.1 billion in fraudu-<lb />
lent refunds, thereby giving some<lb />
defense to their argument for<lb />
increased investigation. However,<lb />
the issue of how much they com-<lb />
municate with those being inves-<lb />
tigated appears to be another<lb />
issue entirely. If one were to look<lb />
at the suspected fraud like one<lb />
accused of a crime, then it would<lb />
raise questions about due process.<lb />
"It is a central tenet of Ameri-<lb />
can law that the government<lb />
must notify an accused person<lb />
of the offense it suspects he com-<lb />
mitted and must give the accused<lb />
person an opportunity to present<lb />
exculpatory evidence to show his<lb />
innocence said Nina Olson, tax<lb />
advocate.<lb />
On the other hand, the IRS has<lb />
$73 million in unclaimed legiti-<lb />
mate refunds owed to some 84,000<lb />
taxpayers. Most who have not<lb />
received this money are unaware<lb />
of it because of the bureaucratic<lb />
barrier prevalent within the IRS<lb />
which creates long hold times on<lb />
the telephone, ambiguous jargon<lb />
and simple confusion.<lb />
A tax code as complicated<lb />
as it is in this country seems<lb />
to provide job security for the<lb />
IRS employees who understand<lb />
it because of their day-to-day<lb />
familiarity with it.<lb />
Of note is the increasing<lb />
number of IRS employees who<lb />
either do not pay their taxes or<lb />
file at all. An investigation once<lb />
found 667 IRS employees who<lb />
did neither, 115 of whom were<lb />
fired. Section 1203 of the IRS<lb />
Restructuring and Reform Act of<lb />
1998 requires that IRS personnel<lb />
be fired for failing to file a tax<lb />
return.<lb />
The apparent disregard for<lb />
Section 1203 is confusing despite<lb />
promises from high IRS officials<lb />
to use the code to have a "chill-<lb />
ing" effect on those who violate<lb />
this code.<lb />
This summer, thelRSattempted<lb />
to slim down its workforce by<lb />
restructuring. A lot of those plans<lb />
have yet to be implemented and<lb />
will cut at least 100 jobs from the<lb />
IRS IT department. The job cuts are<lb />
in line for a government agency<lb />
which has been stricken with addi-<lb />
tional costs as the number of inves-<lb />
tigations increase. The National<lb />
Treasury Employees Union is not<lb />
taking job cuts lightly, which may<lb />
lead to interesting posturing in the<lb />
upcoming months.<lb />

Naomi Tutu tells of civil<lb />
rights struggle in South<lb />
Africa<lb />
CHRIS MUNIER<lb />
NEWS EDITOR<lb />
Naomi Tutu, daughter of<lb />
Archbishop Desmond Tutu and<lb />
editor of "The Words of Desmond<lb />
Tutu headlined this year's<lb />
Martin Luther King Jr. memo-<lb />
rial celebrations last night by<lb />
giving her accounts of civil rights<lb />
struggles in her home country,<lb />
South Africa.<lb />
David Dennard, associate<lb />
professor of history, introduced<lb />
Tutu by explaining her father's<lb />
involvement in the Apartheid<lb />
movement and compared his<lb />
efforts to the non-violent work<lb />
King did.<lb />
"She Tutu, like you, stands<lb />
on the shoulders of giants <lb />
her father King, Nelson Man-<lb />
dela said Dennard.<lb />
He said those leaders were<lb />
all rooted in the church and did<lb />
what they did without violence.<lb />
Dennard also added that in 1963,<lb />
the same year King gave his<lb />
"I have a dream" speech, ECU<lb />
admitted the first African Ameri-<lb />
can student, Laura Marie Little.<lb />
Tutu opened her speech by<lb />
declaring that King is not only<lb />
a source of inspiration in the<lb />
United States but South Africa<lb />
as well.<lb />
"I am happy to let you know he<lb />
is someone we all claim said Tutu.<lb />
The thesis of Tutu's speech<lb />
was grounded in the idea of<lb />
how people, in South Africa and<lb />
America alike, have to learn his-<lb />
tory and claim all parts of history,<lb />
including those that bring shame.<lb />
Whether they are stories<lb />
that hurt us, stories that shame<lb />
us or stories that we would like to<lb />
pretend didn't happen Tutu said.<lb />
She illustrated her claim<lb />
by recalling the way South<lb />
Africans handled the amnesty<lb />
hearings during the Truth and<lb />
Reconciliation Commission.<lb />
Tutu said she was surprised<lb />
at the number of perpetrators<lb />
who lied during those hearings<lb />
despite the offer the government<lb />
gave them. Their incentive was<lb />
amnesty in exchange for telling<lb />
the truth and revealing which<lb />
partisan forces were behind the<lb />

Firefighters in a ladder truck are dwarfed by flames at the Adhesives Research Corporation<lb />

ASHEBORO, NC (AP) Many<lb />
70-somethings stay active, but<lb />
few lash wheels to their feet and<lb />
take off rolling every chance they<lb />
get like Ed Price.<lb />
"I love it said Price, who<lb />
turned 71 in November.<lb />
"I just enjoy it. My heart and<lb />
soul's here. I could probably come<lb />
here and skate all day and all<lb />
night if they'd let me<lb />
Price was taking a breather<lb />
recently from skating at Roll-A-<lb />
Bout Skating Rink in Asheboro.<lb />
The resident of Mount Gilead in<lb />
Montgomery County makes the<lb />
45-mile commute from his home<lb />
at least three nights a week to<lb />
the rink.<lb />
The folks at Roll-A-Bout let<lb />
him in free because once he's on<lb />
the floor, Price becomes an extra<lb />
hand, helping oversee the mix<lb />
of beginners and accomplished<lb />
skaters making laps around the<lb />
hardwood. He particularly likes<lb />
mingling with the young people,<lb />
who comprise the majority of<lb />
the crowd.<lb />
He gives them skating tips if<lb />
they want, but mostly he moves<lb />
from person to person, from<lb />
group to group, simply chatting,<lb />
sharing small talk interspersed<lb />
with words of encouragement.<lb />
The youngsters call him<lb />
"Grandpa<lb />
It does not take a casual rink-<lb />
side observer who does not know<lb />
Price long to realize that he could<lb />
not possibly have that many<lb />
grandchildren.<lb />
"I love to be around young<lb />
people he said.<lb />
"I guess I'm more oriented to<lb />
young people than I am to elderly<lb />
people. Kids want to learn (to<lb />
skate) but moms and dads don't<lb />
have the time to do it. I hate to<lb />
say it, but mothers and fathers<lb />
are missing out on one of the<lb />
best parts of their kid's life, when<lb />
they're out here skating<lb />
Price grew up in Columbia,<lb />
SC, where his father was a textile<lb />
worker. The family moved from<lb />
mill village to mill village as the<lb />
elder Price changed jobs, finally<lb />
settling in Charlotte when Ed was<lb />
just entering his teens.<lb />
Long before the move to<lb />
North Carolina though, Price<lb />
made his way to a skating rink<lb />
for the first time. He was five<lb />
when his parents took him. His<lb />
father was not much of a skater<lb />
and his mother was average. For<lb />
some reason, he said, skating<lb />
suited him.<lb />
"I think I just had a natural<lb />
pickup in it. It came to me pretty<lb />
easily he said.<lb />
School did not come quite so<lb />
easily to Price. He dropped out in<lb />
the ninth grade and took a job<lb />
with an errand service. Until he<lb />
was old enough to get his license<lb />
and drive a delivery truck, he car-<lb />
ried packages on his bicycle. He<lb />
delivered telegrams, too. He also<lb />
earned money by selling newspa-<lb />
pers on the square in downtown<lb />
Charlotte.<lb />
But he never stopped skat-<lb />
ing.<lb />
He remembers skating in a<lb />
tent a man periodically set up in<lb />
Charlotte, but most of his skating<lb />
time was spent at the Queen City<lb />
Roller Rink downtown.<lb />
"I went skating every night<lb />
he said.<lb />
"Every night the building was<lb />
open, I was there and they only<lb />
closed on Wednesday night<lb />
He met his future wife, Betty,<lb />
at a skating rink. For years, they<lb />
were among a crowd that regu-<lb />
larly gathered to skate. In those<lb />
days, Price said, the music at the<lb />
rink came from records spun on<lb />
a phonograph turntable. Couples'<lb />
skating was popular, with a<lb />
fellow and his girl practicing to<lb />
do dances such as the Waltz, the<lb />
Two-Step and the Collegian.<lb />
After he and Betty married,<lb />
he took a job working in the<lb />
parts department for a Philco<lb />
appliance distributor. But they<lb />
kept skating and when the rink<lb />
owner wanted to get out of the<lb />
business, they wound up buying<lb />
the Queen City rink.<lb />
The Prices ran it for 10 years.<lb />
He worked by day at the parts<lb />
counter, by night at the rink. The<lb />
rink still was closed on Wednes-<lb />
day nights, but the Prices would<lb />
go to their church and bring the<lb />
church youth in buses and cars to<lb />
skate for free. During that time,<lb />
Price played a lot of team hockey<lb />
on roller skates.<lb />
Skating was a mainstream<lb />
pastime then and business was<lb />
good. But the popularity of skat-<lb />
ing ebbs and flows, according to<lb />
Price, as young people grow up<lb />
and get away from it, then have<lb />
children of their own and bring<lb />
them to the rink.<lb />
About 10 years ago, the Prices<lb />
sold their Charlotte home and<lb />
property to a developer who<lb />
later built a business center. They<lb />
purchased land in a development<lb />
near Mount Gilead and built a<lb />
home. For nine years, he was<lb />
part owner of a store called the<lb />
Uwharrie Sportsman, but he sold<lb />
that interest three years ago. Price<lb />

universities in the North Carolina<lb />
system impose unconstitutional limits<lb />
on freedom of speech, according to<lb />
a report issued Tuesday.<lb />
The report was issued by the Pope<lb />
Center for Higher Education Policy<lb />
and the Foundation for Individual<lb />
Rights in Education.<lb />
"It's a public school system<lb />
Greg Lukianoff, interim president<lb />
of the foundation, said at a news<lb />
conference in the Legislative Building.<lb />
"It's bound by the First Amendment<lb />
One example cited in the report was<lb />
a prohibition by Fayetteville State<lb />
University on vulgar language. Another<lb />
example was the prohibition on<lb />
"disrespect for persons" at the University<lb />
of North Carolina at Greensboro.<lb />
Elizabeth City State University was<lb />
the only school in the UNC system<lb />
not criticized in the report.<lb />
The report called on the system to<lb />
review the campus policies.<lb />
Leslie Winner, vice president and<lb />
general counsel for the university<lb />
system, said the report would be<lb />
examined carefully.<lb />
"Open debate and free dialogue<lb />
are hallmark values of the university<lb />
system and we very, very rarely get<lb />
any complaints that anyone feels<lb />
their free speech rights are being<lb />
infringed said Winner.<lb />
"We do have time, place and manner<lb />
restrictions that say you can't have<lb />
your protest on the classroom steps<lb />
when people are trying to get In, but<lb />
it never means you can't have your<lb />
protest<lb />
She questioned the need for the<lb />
report and called it "a clear case of<lb />

NC rejects lone offer to operate<lb />
State Fair midway<lb />
RALEIGH, NC (AP) - On Tuesday,<lb />
North Carolina agriculture<lb />
department officials rejected the<lb />
lone offer to operate the State Fair<lb />
midway for the next three years,<lb />
saying the unexpectedly low bid was<lb />
unacceptable.<lb />
The State Fair has several options,<lb />
and we're confident that the solution<lb />
we choose will result in a successful<lb />
fair state Agriculture Commissioner<lb />
Steve Troxler said in a statement<lb />
Earlier in the day, Wade Shows of<lb />
Spring Hill, Fla the operator of last<lb />
year's fair, offered to pay the state<lb />
$3 for each paid admission to the<lb />
2006 State Fair - about half of the<lb />
$5,915 it paid last year. About 643,000<lb />
people paid to attend last year's fair<lb />
and overall attendance was about<lb />
796,000.<lb />
The state Department of Agriculture<lb />
and Consumer Services had<lb />
requested bids for a three-year<lb />
contract instead of the one-year deals<lb />
ft offered from 2003 to 2005. Officials<lb />
believed that midway operators<lb />
would be more likely to bid on a<lb />
three-year contract because it offered<lb />
more stability.<lb />
Ron Weber, the Wade Shows<lb />
spokesman who entered the bid, said<lb />
before the rejection that he believed<lb />
the bid was fair and that previous<lb />
offers for the state's business were<lb />
unusually high. He did not immediately<lb />
return a phone call seeking comment<lb />
after the state rejected the bid.<lb />
National<lb />
Air Force, rockers use same<lb />
earplug technology<lb />
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - The same kind<lb />
of earplugs sold to Def Leppard, the<lb />
Moody Blues, Nine Inch Nails and<lb />
other rock bands are starting to be<lb />
used by U.S. military pilots to protect<lb />
hearing, muffle cockpit noise and<lb />
ease communications.<lb />
Unlike commercial aircraft, military<lb />
planes usually have no insulation in<lb />
the cockpit to help muffle engine and<lb />
wind noise. And the fans that cool<lb />
cockpit equipment can be loud.<lb />
The new earplugs originally were<lb />
developed for aircraft maintenance<lb />
workers who often had to stand next<lb />
to deafening jet engines,<lb />
"The pilots got jealous said John<lb />
Hall, audio engineer in the Air Force<lb />
Research Lab at Wright-Patterson Air<lb />
Force Base.<lb />
The lab has been working on the<lb />
plugs with two private contractors:<lb />
Manufactured Assemblies Corp. of<lb />
Dayton and Westone Laboratories<lb />
Inc. of Colorado Springs, Colo.<lb />
The earplugs are similar to ones<lb />
Westone sells to rock bands, said<lb />
Karl Cartwright, head of new product<lb />
development for the company.<lb />
Musicians use the plugs not only<lb />
to protect their hearing, but also to<lb />
hear the sounds of the individual<lb />
instruments and voices more clearly.<lb />
The new plugs are made of silicon,<lb />
with speakers implanted inside. Each<lb />
plug is designed to fit the ears of<lb />
individual pilots and have small vents<lb />
that relieve pressure created with<lb />
changes in altitude that can rupture<lb />
eardrums.<lb />
About 300 pilots and maintenance<lb />
workers are using the new plugs,<lb />
he said. They cost more than $200<lb />
a pair, while the old foam plugs cost<lb />
a tiny fraction of that and are thrown<lb />
away after use.<lb />

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Gov.<lb />
Arnold Schwarzenegger vowed to<lb />
update his driver's license after police<lb />
determined he had been riding his<lb />

got into a minor accident over the<lb />
weekend.<lb />
Schwarzenegger "will move forward<lb />
to get the appropriate endorsement<lb />
the governor's spokeswoman, Margita<lb />

after the accident that left him with<lb />
15 stitches in his upper lip.<lb />

Apartheid brutalities.<lb />
"I was amazed at how people<lb />
would lie Tutu said.<lb />
However, Tutu eventually<lb />
realized that Apartheid criminals<lb />
were becoming dehumanized. She<lb />
told a story of Eugene De Kock,<lb />
former Apartheid death squad<lb />
leader, who confessed to the Truth<lb />
and Reconciliation Commission.<lb />
De Kock was nicknamed "prime<lb />
evil" because of how brutally he<lb />
tortured people. De Kock told<lb />
the commission he had to "split<lb />
himself He was a churchgoer, a<lb />
father and a husband but he was<lb />
also a callous torturer.<lb />
She considered the dilemma<lb />
racists and torturers had to be a<lb />
problem with a duality of per-<lb />
sonas and that by the time the<lb />
TRC hearings came about, people<lb />
had to integrate those two sides<lb />
and realize they were one in the<lb />
same.<lb />
"It was the same person who<lb />
went to church on Sunday and on<lb />
the same mission, went to burn<lb />
bodies Tutu said.<lb />
The exposure of the Apart-<lb />
heid crimes led to shame and<lb />
apologies.<lb />
"They realized to reclaim their<lb />
humanity, it was not enough to<lb />
tell the truth Tutu said.<lb />
Tutu finished her lecture by<lb />
providing assertions on how<lb />
history should be understood<lb />
by people.<lb />
"History is not something you<lb />
learn to be proud Tutu said.<lb />
While teaching at the Univer-<lb />
sity of Hartford, Tutu could not<lb />
believe the number of students<lb />
who expressed interest in learn-<lb />
ing about slavery in depth for<lb />
the first time. She criticized high<lb />
school history books for trying<lb />
to merely be "proud of history"<lb />
and that people are ashamed of<lb />
the slavery too much to learn<lb />
about it.<lb />
"Why is it that slavery is only<lb />
a paragraph long?" Tutu said.<lb />
Tutu described how she first<lb />
learned of King when her parents<lb />
made her go to church during<lb />
the middle of the night when<lb />
King was killed. She originally<lb />
wondered why someone in South<lb />
Africa should care about a man<lb />
who died in another country.<lb />
At that point, her parents spoke<lb />
with her about King's legacy.<lb />
Her speech was part of this<lb />
year's MLK memorial observances<lb />
and will be complemented by a<lb />
candlelight vigil Monday, Jan. 16 at<lb />
the top of College Hill at 6 p.m.<lb />

U.S Australia says businesses will<lb />
cut greenhouse gas emissions<lb />
voluntarily<lb />
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - The<lb />
United States and Australia insisted<lb />
Wednesday at the opening of a two-<lb />
day climate change conference that<lb />
industry leaders can be relied upon<lb />
to voluntarily slash emissions blamed<lb />
for heating the earth's atmosphere.<lb />
The Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean<lb />
Development and Climate brought<lb />
together senior ministers from the<lb />
United States, Australia, Japan, China,<lb />
South Korea and India, along with<lb />
executives from energy and resource<lb />
firms.<lb />
The countries with 45 percent of the<lb />
world's population account for nearly<lb />
half of the world's gross domestic<lb />
product, energy consumption and<lb />
global greenhouse gas emissions,<lb />
the Australian government said.<lb />
Environmentalists have branded the<lb />
meeting a stunt to divert attention from<lb />
the U.S. and Australian governments'<lb />
refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocol,<lb />
which legally binds countries to<lb />
targets for cutting greenhouse gas<lb />
emissions by 2012.<lb />
The United States is the world's<lb />
biggest greenhouse-gas emitter by<lb />
volume. Australia is the top producer<lb />
of greenhouse gases per capita,<lb />
according to the Australia Institute,<lb />
MHHBMMHB<lb />
an environmental think tank.<lb />
Canberra and Washington say<lb />
industry will regulate itself without<lb />
specific targets or taxes on the<lb />
amount of carbon they pump into the<lb />
atmosphere.<lb />
Global warming has been blamed<lb />
for rising sea levels and increasingly<lb />
frequent extreme weather, like the<lb />
hurricanes that lashed the United<lb />
States last year.<lb />
Three Chechens charged with<lb />

MOSCOW (AP) - Three ethnic Chechens<lb />
charged in connection with the 2004<lb />
slaying of an American journalist pleaded<lb />
not guilty Tuesday as their secret trial began<lb />
in Moscow City Court<lb />
Paul Klebnikov, the editor of Forbes<lb />
magazines Russian edition, was gunned<lb />
down outside the magazine's Moscow<lb />
offices in July 2004 in one of the highest-<lb />
profile slayings in the country in recent<lb />
years.<lb />
ProsecutrxssayKhozhAkrmedNuWiayev<lb />
ordered a former separatist minister in<lb />
Russia's conflict-tom Chechnya, who was<lb />
the subject of a critical book by Klebnikov<lb />
titled Conversations with a Barbarian The<lb />
kilter Nukhayev remains at large.<lb />
"Not one of the accused pleaded guilty -<lb />
all declared their innocence of all charges<lb />
said defense lawyer RuslanXhasancywho<lb />
represents suspect Kazbek Dukuzov.<lb />
DukuzwandMusaVakhayev are charged<lb />
with the shooting<lb />
A third suspect Fail Sadretdinov, faces<lb />
charges of attempted murder and<lb />
organizing the criminal group alleged<lb />
to have killed Klebnikov. Lawyers<lb />
suggested that prosecutors mainly have<lb />
accused Sadretdinov, a notary, of making<lb />
introductions.<lb />
Many observers have cast skepticism<lb />
on the official account of the motives,<lb />
suggesting that anger over Klebnikov's<lb />
work for Forbes was most likely the<lb />
motive for the killing. They say the U.S.<lb />
journalist may have made enemies<lb />
while investigating corruption and the<lb />
murky post-Soviet business world.<lb />

GM plans to lower prices on<lb />
57 of 76 N. American models<lb />
A GM dealer is placing a new price tag on a car for sale.<lb />
DETROIT (AP) General<lb />
Motors Corp which has been<lb />
losing market share in the United<lb />
States to Asian automakers, said<lb />
Tuesday that it will lower the<lb />
prices on 57 of its 76 models in<lb />
North America in an effort to<lb />
boost its sliding market share<lb />
and wean buyers off expensive<lb />
incentives.<lb />
Mark LaNeve, vice president<lb />
of sales and marketing for the<lb />
world's biggest automaker, told<lb />
reporters that the program will<lb />
lower the manufacturer's sug-<lb />
gested retail price by as much as<lb />
$2,500 on some vehicles, but the<lb />
average decrease will be $1,300.<lb />
"We want it to be crystal clear<lb />
that with or without incentives<lb />
you're getting a great price<lb />
said LaNeve, who planned to<lb />
announce the deal later Tuesday<lb />
at the North American Interna-<lb />
tional Auto Show.<lb />
GM will lower prices on all<lb />
Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehi-<lb />
cles and most Pontiac vehicles<lb />
starting Wednesday, LaNeve said.<lb />
Saab, Saturn and Hummer will be<lb />
excluded because GM feels they<lb />
are already priced appropriately,<lb />
he said.<lb />
LaNeve said GM believes it<lb />
will make money despite the<lb />
markdowns because it has new<lb />
products coming to market,<lb />
and it will be spending less per<lb />
vehicle on incentives, which<lb />
have sometimes topped $4,000<lb />
per vehicle.<lb />
"Bottom line, we think this is<lb />
the right thing to do for our busi-<lb />
ness LaNeve said. GM's sales<lb />
dropped five percent in 2005<lb />
despite popular employee-pricing<lb />
discounts last summer.<lb />
GM shares edged up a penny<lb />
to $22.57 in midday trading on<lb />
the New York Stock Exchange.<lb />
Under the new pricing plan, a<lb />
2007 Chevrolet Tahoe will have<lb />
an MSRP of $33,990 for a model<lb />
with a 5.8-liter, V-8 engine. That<lb />
is $2,000 below the 2006 Chev-<lb />
rolet Tahoe even though the new<lb />
Tahoe offers better fuel economy,<lb />
Chevrolet General Manager Ed<lb />
Peper said.<lb />
GM said the new pricing will<lb />
make it easier for consumers to<lb />
compare GM vehicles with their<lb />
competitors on the Internet,<lb />
where two-thirds of car shoppers<lb />
are now doing research. High<lb />
incentive spending had made it<lb />
more difficult for consumers to<lb />
figure out the price of a vehicle.<lb />
Peper said the 2007 Chevrolet<lb />
Impala LS will sell for $20,990,<lb />
, or $1,000 less than the previous<lb />
c model. A comparable Toyota<lb />
Camry sells for $23,320, while a<lb />
comparable Honda Accord sells<lb />
for $25,650, Peper said.<lb />
GM has been struggling for<lb />
years to overcome negative per-<lb />
ceptions about the quality of<lb />
its vehicles. LaNeve said the<lb />
company would be introducing<lb />
aggressive new ads that invite<lb />
buyers to compare their vehicles<lb />
to any others on the market.<lb />
GM also has struggled trying<lb />
to get away from expensive incen-<lb />
tives that it launched after the<lb />
Sept. 11 attacks. Incentives like<lb />
last summer's employee-discount<lb />
plan have led to big short-term<lb />
sales gains, but they have hurt<lb />
the company's image because<lb />
they can cheapen the brand<lb />
image and hurt resale values.<lb />
LaNeve said incentives won't<lb />
go away entirely, but the com-<lb />
pany plans to use them spar-<lb />
ingly.<lb />
"That's just part of the auto-<lb />
motive landscape LaNeve said.<lb />

ments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. While this means<lb />
only two editions of TEC next week and another<lb />
day off from school, many students seem to forget<lb />
the true reasons we honor Dr. King every year.<lb />
It is difficult to reflect on the reasons for a holiday<lb />
if you do not know much about the person it is<lb />
honoring, so here is a brief history lesson. Martin<lb />
Luther King, Jr. was bom Jan. 15,1929, in Atlanta,<lb />
Ga. As a child, King attended segregated Geor-<lb />
gia schools and graduated from high school at<lb />
the age of 15, going on to earn a Bachelor of<lb />
Arts Degree from Morehouse College, an Afri-<lb />
can-American institution in Atlanta. He then went<lb />
on to act as a co-pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist<lb />
Church in Atlanta. He then went on to earn his<lb />
doctorate from Boston University, and was later<lb />
offered a pastoral position at the Dexter Avenue<lb />
Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.<lb />
Throughout his time in Alabama, King contin-<lb />
ued to progress with the civil rights movement,<lb />
not only to help African-American people, but<lb />
also for the advancement of other minorities<lb />
and women. He made many famous speeches,<lb />
wrote many famous books and campaigned for<lb />
many great political leaders.<lb />
At the age of 35, Martin Luther King, Jr was the<lb />
youngest man to have earned the Nobel Peace<lb />
Prize. Rather than keep the money for himself,<lb />
King donated his $54,123 to civil rights efforts<lb />
around the country.<lb />
On April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn King was<lb />
assassinated at the age of 39. The Internet can<lb />
be a great resource for more information about<lb />
his accomplishments, a way to listen to some of<lb />
his speeches or to just find out a little more about<lb />
his life. A simple "Google" search of his name<lb />
will bring thousands of Web sites to the surface,<lb />
ranging from why he should be celebrated in a<lb />
more appropriate way to why the day in his honor<lb />
should no longer exist. The fact remains, however,<lb />
that African Americans, women and other minori-<lb />
ties in this country would not be where they are<lb />
today without his non-violent efforts.<lb />
On Monday, Jan. 16, don't just enjoy the day<lb />
off from school - look around you and think<lb />
about how much different this country could be<lb />
if King had not sacrificed himself for the good<lb />
of others. Think about how you, at the begin-<lb />
ning of this New Year, could dedicate a part of<lb />
yourself and your time to make our University,<lb />
community, state, country or world a better<lb />
place. It is quite evident that one person truly can<lb />
make a difference. Why not be the next person<lb />
to have a national holiday dedicated to them?<lb />

Birds of a feather, are you an omen?<lb />
had my head in the<lb />
cloud, and I saw birds<lb />
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
CASUAL OBSERVER<lb />
For those of you who made<lb />
it past your first fall semester<lb />
to your first spiing semester,<lb />
congratulations - from here on<lb />
it should be a little bit easier. At<lb />
least, that's how it has been for<lb />
me. Unfortunately, I don't always<lb />
feel that way at the beginning.<lb />
However, I can say two things that<lb />
I would consider to be fortunate:<lb />
(1) out of the eight semesters I've<lb />
spent here at ECU, I've only had<lb />
one that I would consider a bad<lb />
one, and (2) I had an omen of<lb />
good will on Monday.<lb />
If you saw a guy in a black<lb />
Harley Davidson shirt staring<lb />
up at the sky near Mendenhall<lb />
student center, that was me. I was<lb />
too enthralled in what I saw in<lb />
the sky to really care what others<lb />
were thinking. As I was walking<lb />
to lunch Monday at about 10<lb />
minutes to noon, I saw this huge<lb />
bird soaring at least 30 feet in<lb />
the air. I've seen big birds flying<lb />
over campus before, but only a<lb />
few times - so some of you can<lb />
probably imagine why I wanted<lb />
to appreciate the moment. Then<lb />
I saw two more up even higher<lb />
in the air, then later two more<lb />
off in the distance over down-<lb />
town. I stood there for at least 20<lb />
minutes, watching one swoop<lb />
over my head while the others<lb />
were flying around central<lb />
campus and downtown.<lb />
Come to think of it,<lb />
I had another weird bird<lb />
experience while I was at home<lb />
over the holidays. I was at my<lb />
dentist's office for a checkup. It<lb />
was around lunch time, so the<lb />
doors were locked. Instead of<lb />
waiting inside the exterior<lb />
waiting room, which is about the<lb />
size of a closet or armoire here on<lb />
campus, I decided to wait out-<lb />
side. I remember I was wishing<lb />
that I had brought my mp3<lb />
player when I noticed a rather<lb />
large bird perched on a tree<lb />
across the street from where I<lb />
was. Suddenly, he took off from<lb />
the branch flew straight toward<lb />
me. I could have sworn that<lb />
he was looking at me dead on,<lb />
and his eyes felt like they were<lb />
piercing right through me. I<lb />
was so surprised that I couldn't<lb />
move. It flew right past me,<lb />
coming within at least three<lb />
feet of me and over the roof of<lb />
the building.<lb />
Have you ever heard of<lb />
augurs? In ancient Rome, augurs<lb />
were priests or officials who read<lb />
the flight patterns of birds and<lb />
interpreted them as omens or<lb />
messages from the gods. In fact,<lb />
the very origin of Rome is slightly<lb />
based in augury. According to the<lb />
story, Romulus and Remus, twin<lb />
sons of the war god MarsAres,<lb />
were trying to decide where to<lb />
build their city. They decided to<lb />
settle this by testing each others'<lb />
ability as an augur. Each took a<lb />
seat where they wanted to found<lb />
their city. Remus saw six vultures,<lb />
while Romulus saw 12. This<lb />
meant they would build their city<lb />
where Romulus wanted. Angered<lb />
by his loss to Romulus, Remus<lb />
began ridiculing and obstructing<lb />
his brother's work. Finally, Remus<lb />
leapt across the trench Romulus<lb />
had dug, an omen of bad luck<lb />
which implied a city that was<lb />
easily breached. This angered<lb />
Romulus, and he immediately<lb />
slew his brother. Romulus named<lb />
the city Rome, after himself, and<lb />
became its first king.<lb />
I'm not planning to build<lb />
a city any time soon, and even<lb />
if I was I don't think I'd be<lb />
willing to slay anybody to do it.<lb />
For me, I guess these experiences<lb />
are just about appreciating the<lb />
world around me. What I don't<lb />
understand is how no one else<lb />
seemed to care or notice what<lb />
was going on in both of my<lb />
situations. The only time I've<lb />
seen any of those kinds of birds<lb />
is out a car window while driving<lb />
down the highway or at the zoo.<lb />
It's one of those things that you<lb />
don't see every day, and it bugs<lb />
the heck out of me when no one<lb />
else notices these kinds of things.<lb />
I mean, when I was out there<lb />
Monday, it seemed like no one<lb />
else even noticed what was going<lb />
on. When I was at my dentist's<lb />
office, no one else saw the bird.<lb />
I guess what this is really about<lb />
is that I wish people could have<lb />
felt the same thing I did when I<lb />
saw those birds.<lb />
This whole experience was<lb />
capped-off qn my way back from<lb />
lunch. 1 noticed a feather on the<lb />
ground as I was walking. When<lb />
I looked at it closer, it appeared<lb />
to be from one of the birds I had<lb />
seen. While I don't want to go<lb />
into specific details, seeing these<lb />
birds has given me a sense of<lb />
confidence to pursue something.<lb />
They also make me feel like this<lb />
is going to be an interesting<lb />
semester. I guess that's kind of<lb />
what omens do. For those of you<lb />
who may have not have seen the<lb />
birds, I hope that I have in some<lb />
way passed my own feelings of<lb />
this experience that give you<lb />
hope for a great semester.<lb />
In My Opinion<lb />
(KRT) You can do a lot<lb />
of things when December rolls<lb />
around and temperatures plunge.<lb />
But would you hold an inter-<lb />
national conference on global<lb />
warming?<lb />
The United Nations did.<lb />
It recently hosted a gathering<lb />
of all the countries that have<lb />
signed on to the Kyoto Protocol,<lb />
a treaty aimed at preventing<lb />
global warming. Some 10,000<lb />
people traveled to Montreal for<lb />
the conference. It was predict-<lb />
ably cold outside, but there was<lb />
plenty of hot rhetoric indoors.<lb />
Unfortunately for the delegates,<lb />
the speakers could never quite<lb />
agree what we're up against.<lb />
While most Kyoto enthusiasts<lb />
have long argued the planet is get-<lb />
ting warmer, a recent report in the<lb />
journal Nature hints that a new ice<lb />
age may be on the way. The report<lb />
says the ocean current that keeps<lb />
Europe warm may be shifting, which<lb />
could make the continent cooler.<lb />
But no matter what, the<lb />
worrywarts have the future<lb />
covered. Steven Guilbeault of<lb />
Greenpeace explained, "Global<lb />
warming can mean colder, it can<lb />
mean drier, it can mean wetter,<lb />
that's what we're dealing with<lb />
No wonder humanity is having<lb />
trouble addressing the problems<lb />
- we can't even decide what the<lb />
problems are.<lb />
However, activists can agree<lb />
on who's to blame: The United<lb />
States, of course.<lb />
Another Greenpeace spokes-<lb />
man, Bill Hare, told reporters,<lb />
"When you walk around the<lb />
conference hall here, delegates<lb />
are saying there are lots of issues<lb />
on the agenda, but there's only<lb />
one real problem, and that's the<lb />
United States<lb />
It makes a nice soundbite and<lb />
certainly plays to the anti-Ameri-<lb />
can crowd, but nothing could be<lb />
further from the truth.<lb />
Yes, the United States refused<lb />
to ratify Kyoto. President Clinton<lb />
never even submitted the treaty<lb />
to the Senate, perhaps because<lb />
senators had already voted 95-<lb />
0 to reject any pact that would<lb />
reduce economic growth - some-<lb />
thing Kyoto certainly would do.<lb />
President Bush eventually put the<lb />
treaty out of its misery in 2001.<lb />
But that hasn't kept Wash-<lb />
ington from leading a serious<lb />
international effort to reduce<lb />
carbon-dioxide emissions. Just<lb />
last summer, the United States<lb />
announced the Asia-Pacific Part-<lb />
nership for Clean Development<lb />
and Climate Change. This group<lb />
includes Australia, China, India,<lb />
Japan, South Korea and the<lb />
United States. The State Depart-<lb />
ment says the group will "coop-<lb />
erate on the development, diffu-<lb />
sion, deployment and transfer<lb />
of longer-term transformational<lb />
energy technologies that will<lb />
promote economic growth while<lb />
enabling significant reductions<lb />
in greenhouse gas intensities<lb />
That's critical for two reasons.<lb />
First, because China and India<lb />
are among the world's biggest<lb />
polluters, any treaty that aims to<lb />
reduce pollution is going to have<lb />
to include them. Yet both were<lb />
exempt from Kyoto.<lb />
Second, any attempt to con-<lb />
trol global warming will fail<lb />
unless it also encourages global<lb />
economic growth. As British<lb />
Prime Minister Tony Blair put it<lb />
in September, "the blunt truth<lb />
about the politics of climate<lb />
change is that no country will<lb />
want to sacrifice its economy in<lb />
order to meet this challenge<lb />
Most European Union coun-<lb />
tries that signed the treaty are<lb />
seeing carbon-dioxide emissions<lb />
increase and realize they have<lb />
no way to meet their obligations<lb />
under Kyoto. Some, including host<lb />
nation Canada, have seen emis-<lb />
sions climb more quickly than<lb />
they are in the United States.<lb />
That doesn't seem to bother<lb />
some participants. "We need<lb />
much deeper cuts beyond 2012<lb />
the European Union Commis-<lb />
sion's director general for the<lb />
environment said after the con-<lb />
ference wrapped up. But that<lb />
ignores the fact that most Euro-<lb />
pean countries are already failing<lb />
to live up to Kyoto. How could<lb />
they make deeper cuts than the<lb />
ones they're not making now?<lb />
Blair's approach, and the one the<lb />
U.S. advocates, is the correct one.<lb />
We can do good by doing well.<lb />
A certain amount of humil-<lb />
ity is in order here. With all our<lb />
scientific advances, we can barely<lb />
predict what the weather will be<lb />
tomorrow, let alone forecast what<lb />
will happen 50 years from now.<lb />
What we do know is that as<lb />
a country becomes more afflu-<lb />
ent, it becomes cleaner. So the<lb />
best way to protect the earth is<lb />
to skip the big U.N. conferences,<lb />
which certainly do produce a<lb />
concentrated mass of hot air,<lb />
and focus on keeping the global<lb />
economy hot.<lb />

Just because the football team had two<lb />
down years doesn't mean people still didn't<lb />
come to our games. You have probably never<lb />
been to a soccer game because the only<lb />
people who go are the parents and friends<lb />
of the players. The soccer team did not bring<lb />
in any revenue and had a terrible season.<lb />
The football team at least brought money to<lb />
the school that you are currently attending!<lb />
With the wind blowing through my hair, I<lb />

Guess what? WZMB isn't coming back as<lb />
cool as before. It is going to suck now. They<lb />
need someone better to run that station!<lb />
The soccer team got cut because they didn't<lb />
! win and didn't make any money. The foot-<lb />
ball team brings in millions for the uni-<lb />
versity, has a great tradition and was much<lb />
improved this year.<lb />
If Marcus Vick cannot act professional in<lb />
college football, how can he act professional<lb />
in the NFL? Get some class.<lb />
When is TEC going to understand the area<lb />
it should be covering? Wednesday's paper<lb />
had a front page with no ECU-related news<lb />
and much less inside. It is not your job to<lb />
cover the world - there are other free papers<lb />
on campus to cover that! Cover ECU!<lb />
Just so you know, just because a guy kisses a<lb />
girl it doesn't mean that he necessarily likes<lb />
her. It's a little more complicated than that.<lb />
Why don't you write your own funny pirate<lb />
rants instead of replying to other people?<lb />
No one asked for your opinion.<lb />
How are we supposed to know if we want to<lb />
drop a class or not after going to it twice?<lb />
So, it's January, and weather.com just<lb />
informed me that it will be in the 70s for<lb />
the next two days! Ah, this is just madness<lb />
but I love it!<lb />
It's one thing if a man gets out of a car and<lb />
pulls an umbrella from behind the driver seat<lb />
because it's pouring and uses it outside or if a<lb />
man leaves a building or classroom and notices<lb />
it's raining and retrieves a black umbrella<lb />
from his book sack. But it is quite another,<lb />
on a sunny day, with a 30 percent chance of<lb />
rain, for a man to be holding a three foot long<lb />
purple umbrella "just in case" it sprinkles.<lb />
I hate people who say they are going to<lb />
graduate this semester when they know that<lb />
there is no way it will happen.<lb />
I went to the same high school as both Marcus<lb />
and Michael Vick and they are rude and self-<lb />
ish. The school never made it past the first<lb />
play-off game and they went once in the years<lb />
they were there. Why do people like them?<lb />
The celebrity profile of Heath Ledger in<lb />
Wednesday's TEC failed to mention that if<lb />
you want to see Brokeback Mountain, you have<lb />
to take a two hour road trip to Durham and its<lb />
independent theater because Carmike sucks!<lb />
Don't take the elevator to the second floor,<lb />

What can spoil a great night of<lb />
hockey? Rude and inconsiderate fans.<lb />
Everyone knows that sporting event<lb />
parking lots are tough to deal with.<lb />
Everyone is anxious to get out of there<lb />
to go celebrate their team winning,<lb />
but it is physically impossible for<lb />
there to be no waiting. Because ECU<lb />
has many large sporting events of its<lb />
own, the Features staff thought it was<lb />
important to remind students about a<lb />
few manners that their parents may<lb />
or may not have taught them.<lb />
1. The rule in parking lots is one for<lb />
one. If someone is nice enough to let<lb />
you out in front of them, you should<lb />
wave to thank them and then do the<lb />
same for the next person who needs<lb />
to get out. This is not only polite, but<lb />
it helps the traffic flow and makes<lb />
getting out of the parking lot much<lb />
less stressful.<lb />
2. If someone is pulled over on the<lb />
side of the road because their car<lb />
is broken down or they are getting<lb />
some kind of ticket move over a<lb />
lane if possible. Not only is it rude,<lb />
it is against the law to hit a law<lb />
enforcement officer on the side of<lb />
the road. If you were the one trying<lb />
to change your tire or attempting to<lb />
convince the State Trooper that you<lb />
were not going 110 in a 55, then you<lb />
would appreciate It if people didn't<lb />
come so close, wouldn't you?<lb />
3. When a lane is ending and there<lb />
are people who have to merge, it<lb />
is rude to purposely cut them off.<lb />
Everyone has been there. You are<lb />
in a new town and you didn't know<lb />
the right lane ends. You check your<lb />
blind spot to see if you can get over<lb />
and there is a car that just will not let<lb />
you merge<lb />
Those are just a few of the things that<lb />
Features thinks ECU students and<lb />
faculty need to remember at any and<lb />
all sporting events. Not only should<lb />
you be polite at sporting events, but<lb />
also in your every day life.<lb />

The 63rd Golden Globe<lb />
Awards are just around the corner<lb />
and many of you are probably<lb />
wondering not only who is going<lb />
to win but who is even nomi-<lb />
nated. The telecast of the awards<lb />
will come to viewers live from<lb />
the Beverly Hilton Monday, Jan.<lb />
16 at 8 p.m.<lb />
Best Motion Picture-Drama<lb />
nominations include Brokeback<lb />
Mountain, The Constant Gardener,<lb />
Good Night and Good Luck, A His-<lb />
tory of Violence, and Matchpoint.<lb />
The clear winner will be Broke-<lb />
back Mountain if you consider the<lb />
fact that it has more nominations<lb />
than any other film, with seven.<lb />
However, there could be a sur-<lb />
prise win from one of the other<lb />
less-publicized films.<lb />
Maria Bello A History of<lb />
Violence), Felicity Huffman<lb />
(Transamerica), Gwyneth Pal-<lb />
trow (Proof), Charlize Theron<lb />
(North Country) and Ziyi Zhang<lb />
(Memoirs of a Geisha) are the<lb />
ladies nominated for Best Perfor-<lb />
mance by an Actress in a Motion<lb />
Picture-Drama. Zhang is the only<lb />
newcomer of the bunch - all<lb />
of the other women have been<lb />
nominated in the past.<lb />
Best Performance by ah Actor<lb />
in a Motion Picture-Drama nomi-<lb />
nees are Russell Crowe (Cinderella<lb />
Man), Philip Seymour Hoff-<lb />
man (Capote), Terrance Howard<lb />
(Hustle and Flow), Heath Ledger<lb />
(Brokeback Mountain) and David<lb />
Straithairn (Good Night, Good<lb />
Luck). Crowe is the only man of<lb />
this group who has been previ-<lb />
ously nominated.<lb />
Mrs. Henderson Presents, Pride<lb />
and Prejudice, The Producers, The<lb />
Squid and the Whale, and Walk<lb />
the Line are the nominees for<lb />
Best Motion Picture-Musical<lb />
or Comedy. There isn't a clear<lb />
preference in this category. How-<lb />
ever, I have to hold out hope<lb />
that one of my favorite movies<lb />
of the year, Pride and Prejudice,<lb />
will win.<lb />
Best Performance by an<lb />
Actress in a Motion Picture-<lb />
Musical or Comedy nominees<lb />
are Judi Dench (Mrs. Henderson<lb />
Presents), Keira Knightley (Pride<lb />
and Prejudice), Laura Linney<lb />
(The Squid and the Whale), Sarah<lb />
Jessica Parker (The Family Stone)<lb />
and Reese Witherspoon (Walk<lb />
the Line). Parker is a clear favorite<lb />
considering she's won four out<lb />
of seven nominations. However,<lb />
they were for her role on the<lb />
television series "Sex in the City"<lb />
rather than a movie.<lb />
Pierce Brosnan (The Matador),<lb />
Jeff Daniels (The Squid and The<lb />
Whale), Johnny Depp (Char-<lb />
lie and The Chocolate Factory),<lb />
Nathan Lane (The Producers), Cil-<lb />
lian Murphy (Breakfast on Pluto)<lb />
and Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the<lb />
Line) are the men nominated for<lb />
Best Performance by an Actor<lb />
in a Motion Picture-Musical or<lb />
Comedy. Depp has won four out<lb />
of five nominations - Murphy<lb />
is the only one of the group to<lb />
receive his first nomination.<lb />
Receiving nominations for<lb />
Best Director are Woody Allen<lb />
(Matchpoint), George Clooney<lb />
(Good Night and Good Luck), Peter<lb />
Jackson (King Kong), Ang Lee<lb />
(Brokeback Mountain), Fernando<lb />
Meirelles (The Constant Gardener)<lb />
and Steven Spielburg (Munich).<lb />
Spielburg has won only two out<lb />
of 10 nominations, leaving this<lb />
category open to all nominees.<lb />
The Cecil B. Demille Award<lb />
is the show's most prestigious<lb />
award, honoring one person each<lb />
year who has had a major impact<lb />
on the world of entertainment.<lb />
This year Anthony Hopkins, a<lb />
six-time Golden Globe nominee,<lb />
is set to receive the award.<lb />
This year the Golden Globe<lb />
Awards will air in more than<lb />
150 countries. One of the things<lb />
that makes these awards differ-<lb />
ent from the Academy Awards is<lb />
that it includes both movies and<lb />
television shows. Don't forget to<lb />

No matter how you tune it music from 1976 is far superior to todays' hits.<lb />
Musical spirit of 1976<lb />
Those were the good 'ole<lb />
days<lb />
DANIEL BROCK<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
I continually bemoan the<lb />
state of modern music. I despise<lb />
rap music, Green Day is a bunch of<lb />
hacks and emo kids just bring me<lb />
down. The incoherent mumbling<lb />
of Fifty Cent, the grating screams<lb />
of Thursday and the rudimentary<lb />
chords of Gavin Rossdale leave<lb />
me wondering what happened<lb />
to eight minute guitar solos and<lb />
strutting front men. Give me Bad<lb />
Company ahead of Bad Religion<lb />
and Led Zeppelin instead of<lb />
Lloyd Banks. I don't know why<lb />
music is terrible and why people's<lb />
musical taste is terrible, but it<lb />
certainly wasn't that way in 1976.<lb />
There weren't just a few good<lb />
albums in 1976 - there was a<lb />
plethora. And while 1976 wasn't<lb />
the monster that some years<lb />
earlier in the decade were, it still<lb />
held its own. Let's take a look<lb />
back at some of 1976's biggest hits.<lb />
Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes<lb />
Alive. Hands down the greatest<lb />
live album ever, this record epito-<lb />
mizes 1970s rock. Rock, ballads<lb />
and pop are all crafted perfectly,<lb />
and the three big hits "Baby, I<lb />
Love Your Way "Show Me the<lb />
Way" and "Do You Feel Like We<lb />
Do?" were a perfect soundtrack<lb />
to the centennial summer.<lb />
ACDC - High Voltage. As<lb />
the mellow sounds of Framp-<lb />
ton wafted across parks and<lb />
parades, Bon Scott and crew<lb />
came thunderin' from down<lb />
under. With Malcom and Angus<lb />
Young shredding guitars and<lb />
a drummer pounding his kit<lb />
with tree trunks, the Australian<lb />
quintet was indeed electric. This<lb />
record is TNT, dynamite.<lb />
Stevie Wonder Songs in The<lb />
Key of Life. Stevie Wonder's high<lb />
water mark was a breathtaking<lb />
effort in scope. The double LP's<lb />
range of style and mood shows<lb />
a vision that makes up for his<lb />
lack of sight. Hit's like "Isn't<lb />
She Lovely" were weighted by<lb />
cold tunes like "Village Ghetto<lb />
Land Coolio even based his<lb />
song "Gangsta's Paradise" on<lb />
"Past Time Paradise<lb />
Tom Petty and the Heart<lb />
Breakers - Tom Petty and the Heart-<lb />
breakers. This record continues<lb />
to be a classic. Upon its release,<lb />
this record was well received by<lb />
well, everyone. "Breakdown"<lb />
and "American Girl" are poetic<lb />
garage-rock music. Using dif-<lb />
ferent guitar styles of the day<lb />
and a rocking attitude, Tom<lb />
Petty and Co. established them-<lb />
selves as a band of the future.<lb />
Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood<lb />
Mac. When the remaining<lb />
members of Fleetwood Mac<lb />
joined forces with Lyndsey<lb />
Buckingham and Stevie Nicks,<lb />
few knew the fireworks that<lb />
would ensue. With three tre-<lb />
mendous songwriters, a searing<lb />
guitarist and a solid rhythm<lb />
section, not to mention the<lb />
sultry Nicks, the Mac lit the fuse<lb />
on an explosive career to come.<lb />
see 1976 page A8<lb />
As a disc jockey (you may know me as DJ White<lb />
Fang) at ECU's student radio station, WZMB 91.3,<lb />
the most important thing to me is exposing lis-<lb />
teners to something new they maybe would have<lb />
never found otherwise. As a collaboration between<lb />
TEC and WZMB, that's the trend I'll be following<lb />
with this column throughout the semester - expos-<lb />
ing you to artists outside the mainstream and<lb />
giving you an idea of what we're up to at WZMB.<lb />
Since this is the first column, I figure the best<lb />
place to start is with last year, so I've rounded up<lb />
my personal favorite top 10 albums from 2005<lb />
that might have missed your radar but deserve a<lb />
good listen.<lb />
1. Suf jan Stevens - Illinois. As a part of his goal to<lb />
create an album for each state, Suf jan Stevens released<lb />
Illinois last year and awed the critics. The release<lb />
places an emphasis on Stevens' amazing falsetto,<lb />
and the musical arrangements perfectly embody the<lb />
lyrics that eerily look into the mind of John Wanye<lb />
Gacy, Jr solemnly stand at someone's hospital bed,<lb />
and celebrate the invention of the Ferris wheel.<lb />
2. The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute. Hailed<lb />
by many as the second coming of prog-rock and<lb />
drawing comparisons to Led Zeppelin and Rush,<lb />
Frances the Mute caught a lot of flack for its five<lb />
tracks divided into strange movements that clock<lb />
in at more than 70 minutes total. But with a good<lb />
listen, you'll uncover some amazing solos, tight<lb />
drumming, excellent vocal range and a sound that<lb />
really brings music back to a place where it needs<lb />
to head - somewhere different.<lb />
3. The Decemberists - Picaresque. This album<lb />
is the Decemberists' most accomplished album to<lb />
date, and front man Colin Meloy's amazing story-<lb />
telling ability shines through on nearly every track.<lb />
Not only are the lyrics and stories created easy to<lb />
appreciate, the music will have you dancing in your<lb />
seat and the vocal harmonies leave you humming<lb />
the tunes even before you know any of the lyrics.<lb />
4. The Fiery Furnaces - EP. A personal favorite<lb />
band of mine, the Fiery Furnaces showcase their<lb />
musical abilities here. Brother and sister combo<lb />
Eleanor and Matt Friedberger compose amazing<lb />
pop tunes chock full of keyboards, synthesizers<lb />
and creative guitar riffs. The lyrics are creative and<lb />
flow like poetry while the music makes you want<lb />
to get up and move.<lb />
WZWW5<lb />
5. Antony and the Johnsons -lama Bird Now.<lb />
Antony's voice is the focal point of this album, and<lb />
his multi-octave range and heavy vibrato are a<lb />
refreshing sound for the mellower tone this album<lb />
achieves. The melancholy yet beautiful songs fea-<lb />
ture appearances from Culture Club member Boy<lb />
George, Rufus Wainwright and Devendra Banhart.<lb />
6. Spoon - Gimme Fiction. Listen to (and enjoy)<lb />
"I Turn My Camera On 1 don't think I have to<lb />
say more than that. This entire album is fun and<lb />
energetic, yet reserved and mysterious.<lb />
7. Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon. If hard-<lb />
core music is your thing, this is the best release of<lb />
the year. Gutter Phenomenon expands on the band's<lb />
previous masterpiece of an album, Hot Damn! but<lb />
puts more emphasis on rocking and not caring<lb />
and less on being a part of "the scene From the<lb />
guitar riffs to the vocal screeches to the rhythms<lb />

If the Warner Brothers Records<lb />
press release about Tony Hussle<lb />
is to be taken seriously, then<lb />
everyone needs to stop buying<lb />
Warner Brothers music. The<lb />
opening sentence of the press<lb />
release reads, "It wouldn't be<lb />
much of a stretch to suggest<lb />

drix, Prince<lb />
and DeVante<lb />
Swing, but it's<lb />
in this descrip-<lb />
t ion that<lb />
Hussle fails<lb />
to live up to.<lb />
The seven<lb />
song EP Sexy,<lb />
Freaky, Electric<lb />
is a sample of tracks from his<lb />
upcoming full-length release of<lb />
the same title in March. The big-<lb />
gest problem with the release is<lb />
that it fails to deliver anything<lb />
exciting and the brief sections of<lb />
impressive musical arrangements<lb />
are overshadowed by goofy lyrics<lb />
that don't deliver.<lb />
The opening track is a spoken<lb />
word introduction featuring his<lb />
mother, who describes Hussle's<lb />
beginnings in music as a young<lb />
kid involved with the church<lb />
choir director and persistent on<lb />

playing (she humorously men-<lb />
tions that his feet couldn't reach<lb />
the pedals on the organ, so he<lb />
played piano). This track lasts for<lb />
a little over a minute and leads<lb />
you to believe maybe the album<lb />
won't be so bad.<lb />
It isn't until ypu dive into the<lb />
second track, "Come Again and<lb />
its trite lyrics that make it hard<lb />
to take the music seriously. From<lb />
this track on, the only subject<lb />
tackled on the EP is sex, sex and<lb />
more sex. Lines like, "Hold up<lb />
girl, I gotta go to the bathroom<lb />
are confusingly placed in his first<lb />
person account of making a girl<lb />
well you heard the title.<lb />
The lyrics<lb />
from the<lb />
second track<lb />
only become<lb />
more and<lb />
more difficult<lb />
to take seri-<lb />
ously. They<lb />
flow more like<lb />
a pubescent<lb />
boy's private<lb />
diary about<lb />
his first crush<lb />
than anything<lb />
substantial or<lb />
inspired. The<lb />
big problem is<lb />
this so-called<lb />
'revolution-<lb />
ary funk' isn't challenging or<lb />
interesting, but the music<lb />
wouldn't be so bad if it weren't<lb />
for the lyrics.<lb />
"In This House the album's<lb />
third track, is about making love<lb />
in his house with his girl before<lb />
work. "Special" continues the<lb />
trend of ridiculousness with lines<lb />
like, "You're so specialspecial<lb />

8. Thunderbirds are Now!<lb />
- lustamustache. Without a doubt,<lb />
one of the best all around albums<lb />
this year. An energetic release<lb />
led by vocalist Ryan Allen's<lb />
amazing range (sounds like a<lb />
girl) and guitar that hits hard<lb />
and similar to Le Tigre and<lb />
Les Savy Fav, this album fea-<lb />
tures amazing basslines that<lb />
punch and synth parts that wail.<lb />
9. Sleater-Kinney - The Woods.<lb />
SleatenKinney has been releasing<lb />
good music for a while now, and<lb />
The Woods is no exception. Amaz-<lb />
ing fern rock with vocal shrieks<lb />
that will pierce your eardrums and<lb />
leave you awestruck, this album<lb />
seems like it looks to the past<lb />
for inspiration, to a time when<lb />
the Pretenders ruled and before<lb />
the indie music scene became so<lb />
exclusive. Try the tracks "Wil-<lb />

Those were the top five of 1976,<lb />
but that was merely the tip of the<lb />
iceberg. The following list is mind<lb />
blowing and makes me wonder why<lb />
I couldn't have been living then.<lb />
All of these albums were<lb />
released in 1976: ACDC - High<lb />
Voltage, Aerosmith - Rocks, Blondie<lb />
- Blondie, Boston- Boston, David<lb />
Bowie - Station to Station, Chicago<lb />
- Chicago X, Alice Cooper - Alice<lb />
Cooper Goes to Hell, Kiss - Destroyer,<lb />
Bob Dylan - Desire, The Eagles<lb />
- Greatest Hits, The Eagles - Hotel<lb />
California, Foreigner - Foreigner,<lb />
JenningsNelson - Wanted! The<lb />
Outlaws, Journey - Look Into the<lb />
Future, Led Zeppelin - Presence,<lb />
Lynyrd Skynyrd - One More from<lb />
the Road, Bob Marley - Rastaman<lb />
Vibration, Wings - Wings at the Speed<lb />
of Sound, Steve Miller Band - Fry<lb />
Like an Eagle, The Ramones - 77ie<lb />
Ramones, The Rolling Stones -Black<lb />
& Blue, Rush-2112.<lb />
With albums like those, no<lb />
wonder 1976 is, and will forever<lb />
be known as, the greatest year in<lb />
music history. If you think about it,<lb />
anything is better than now.<lb />

HUSSI8 from page A7<lb />
But it doesn't stop there.<lb />
"Wait" describes his<lb />
frustration with a girl who fails<lb />
to give it up to him after three<lb />
months of dating. In "Your<lb />
Gift" he tackles the theme of<lb />
stealing someone's girlfriend<lb />
(what a surprise!), and in the<lb />
EP's closer, "She's a Virgin, Too<lb />
he gives accounts of every time<lb />
he's taken someone's virginity.<lb />
What makes this so much<lb />
worse is that Hussle claims that<lb />
his inspiration comes from God.<lb />
"1 honestly feel that God touched<lb />
me to do music says Hussle.<lb />
Maybe so, but it seems more<lb />
lazy than inspired.<lb />
Tony Hussle needs to stick to<lb />
writing music, not lyrics. Look-<lb />
ing past the lyrics, these tracks<lb />
do have some very impressive<lb />
beats and musical arrangements.<lb />
"In This House" features some<lb />
excellent guitar solos that could<lb />
drive blues guitarists wild.<lb />
His musical blend of soul,<lb />
funk, blues, rock and hip-hop<lb />
does bring promise of something<lb />
better in the future, but it's in his<lb />
lyrics that Tony Hussle loses all<lb />
credit. You can only sing so much<lb />
about sex and there are some<lb />
things that you just shouldn't<lb />
sing seriously about.<lb />
Unfortunately, all seven songs<lb />
blend together into a giant pile<lb />
of nonsense and by the time you<lb />
get halfway through the EP, even<lb />
the music seems like it's all a little<lb />
too similar. Unless it's laughs<lb />
you're looking for, Tony Hussle's<lb />
Sexy, Freaky, Electric probably just<lb />
isn't worth the time and wasted<lb />
brain cells.<lb />

A state divided by blue blood<lb />
Art Chansky tells the tale<lb />
of hard-court hate<lb />
SCOTTY WILLIAMS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
You know a sports rivalry<lb />
has gone monumental and<lb />
historical whenever you<lb />
base relationship decisions<lb />
on which side your xten-<lb />
tial mate is on. It's got to<lb />
be bad when you come<lb />
to blows with your own<lb />
family on game night.<lb />
Some sports rivalries<lb />
are on the lighter side<lb />
of true animosity while<lb />
the big ones - Auburn<lb />
Alabama, Ohio StateMichigan<lb />
or TexasOklahoma, to name a<lb />
few - could really change the<lb />
course of people's years. Yet the<lb />
biggest rivalry of them all is<lb />
here in North Carolina and it's<lb />
been raging on for decades upon<lb />
decades.<lb />
Royal Blue or Baby Blue?<lb />
Duke and the University of<lb />
North Carolina have had bas-<lb />
ketball bad blood since before<lb />
Dean Smith and Mike Krzyze-<lb />
wski (yep, that's how you spell<lb />
it, from memory no less) played<lb />
prep ball. The roots of this angry<lb />
rivalry go down into the history<lb />
of the Atlantic Coast Conference,<lb />
and anyone who has ever called<lb />
Coach K a little rat or prayed to<lb />
God to wipe the Four Corners<lb />
from the face of existence's play-<lb />
book needs to know about it.<lb />
F.nter Art Chansky's Blue<lb />
Wood: DukeCaroltna: Inside the<lb />
Musi Storied Rivalry in College<lb />
Hoops, a holy text for both sides<lb />
of the rivalry. This book goes<lb />
through the history of the rivals<lb />
and introduces you to key play-<lb />
ers from back in the day as well<lb />
taking you through the landscape<lb />
of college basketball.<lb />
You'll meet Frank McGuire, the<lb />
Irish hothead coach who won North<lb />
Carolina's first national champion-<lb />
ship but also brought the school<lb />
NCAA sanctions for questionable<lb />
recruiting practices. You'll meet Vic<lb />
Bubas, McGuire's counterpart of<lb />
the time at Duke. You'll learn some<lb />
facts and things that may shock you<lb />
a little. For instance:<lb />
Among Dean Smith's vener-<lb />
able accomplishments, he has<lb />
one dubious distinction - he's<lb />
the only coach ever to be ejected<lb />
from an NCAA Final Four game.<lb />
Duke very nearly brought in<lb />
Adolph Rupp, the Baron of the<lb />
Bluegrass and the owner of the<lb />
third-most wins in college basket-<lb />
ball ever, to coach the Blue Devils.<lb />
(1'at Summitt is number one and<lb />
Dean Smith is number two. Yes,<lb />
women's basketball does count in<lb />
my book. Feel free to dispute.)<lb />
Art Heyman had committed<lb />
to North Carolina before revers-<lb />
ing and signing with Duke. This<lb />
animosity was part of the reason<lb />
he and Larry Brown got into their<lb />
famous fight that you'll read<lb />
about if you don't know it.<lb />
The book doesn't just cover<lb />
the rivalry, though. It also goes<lb />
into the deeper things of college<lb />
basketball. Chansky comments<lb />
on coaches as advertising icons<lb />
and how recruitment and game-<lb />
fixing got out of control. You'll<lb />
read about how Bubas' Blue<lb />
Devils lost to Rupp's Kentucky<lb />
Wildcats in the NCAA semifinal,<lb />
and that team could have gone<lb />
on to change history by play-<lb />
ing the Texas Western Miners<lb />
in 1966. There is also a lot of<lb />
insider information - you may<lb />
have never known about Roy Wil-<lb />
liams' return to the homeland<lb />
after his job at Kansas, or the<lb />
rampage that Krzyzewski went on<lb />
after he left Duke and it was run<lb />
into the ground for a season.<lb />
This book Is a coffee table<lb />
necessity for anyone who claims<lb />
to have a background in college<lb />
basketball and especially anyone<lb />
who would die for a ticket to see<lb />
the Tar Heels In Cameron or the<lb />
Blue Devils In the Dean Dome.<lb />
It's a history of Duke, Carolina<lb />
and college basketball the way<lb />
people would like to have it told,<lb />
well-written, passionate and<lb />
unbiased. Whether you think<lb />
Grant Hill is an icon or Rashecd<lb />
Wallace has a heart of gold, you<lb />
need to read this book cover to<lb />
cover as many times as possible<lb />
until you can recite from it.<lb />
Then you can paint your face<lb />
one color and wipe your nose<lb />
with the other.<lb />

The Pirates dueled with one of<lb />
the best teams in the nation for 39<lb />
minutes, but in the end, the sea-<lb />
soned armor of Memphis deflected<lb />
a potential ECU upset bid as the<lb />
Tigers defeated the Pirates 77-67.<lb />
"We made a couple of shots<lb />
and a couple of plays because we<lb />
were a little bit longer said Mem-<lb />
phis Head coach John Calipari.<lb />
"The reality of it is ECU<lb />
could have easily won the game<lb />
"As a coach, you want your<lb />
team to play hard and I thought<lb />
they did said first year ECU<lb />
Head coach Ricky Stokes.<lb />
"Any time, when you lay it on<lb />
the line like that and you lose,<lb />
you're disappointed. But if we can<lb />
continue to have the effort, good<lb />
things will happen to this team<lb />
Stokes received gritty efforts<lb />
from his Kinston combo of Corey<lb />
Rouse and Jeremy Ingram. House<lb />
paced ECU with 20 points and<lb />
12 rebounds despite fighting foul<lb />
trouble for much of the first half,<lb />
lngram's 12 point, 11 rebound<lb />
performance was impressive con-<lb />
sidering the Memphis decisive<lb />
height advantage.<lb />
Junior forward Tyronne Beale<lb />
added 13 points. The Pirates shot<lb />
just 22-of-S9 (37 percent) from<lb />
the field. But late in the game,<lb />
free throw shooting became<lb />
another bugaboo going l7-of-25<lb />
(68 percent).<lb />
Rodney Carney, a potential<lb />
NBA lottery pick, led Memphis<lb />
with a game high 27 points on<lb />
8-of-23 shooting. Insiders con-<lb />
sider the 6-foot-7-inch swing man<lb />
to be among the best athletes in<lb />
college basketball. The senior<lb />
leader struggled early, but con-<lb />

10-of-35 (28.6 percent) from 3<lb />
point range.<lb />
" If they're wide open, they have<lb />

Memphis point guard Darius<lb />
Washington, Jr scored eight<lb />
points in the last eight minutes,<lb />
20 seconds. But the sophomore's<lb />
pivotal play was when he dove on<lb />
his own miss and was granted a<lb />
timeout with 1:20 remaining.<lb />
Memphis hit 9-of-10 free<lb />
throws over the last 1:09 to seal<lb />
the win. The Tigers finished the<lb />
game on a 13-6 spurt.<lb />
Behind a season high 7,535<lb />
partisan fans, ECU rushed out<lb />
early on with seven consecutive<lb />
points capped by lngram's first<lb />
three-pointer. Ingram notched<lb />
another jumper to push ECU to<lb />
their biggest lead at 21-13 with<lb />
9:36 remaining in the first half.<lb />
Memphis countered with a<lb />
14-2 run to reassume the lead.<lb />
ECU didn't score for over two<lb />
minutes during the Tiger run.<lb />
The teams were deadlocked at the<lb />
intermission after trading baskets<lb />
for the rest of the frame.<lb />
"Don't think we didn't play<lb />
well Calipari said.<lb />
"We're not much better than<lb />
that. If ECU plays like that every<lb />
night out, their fine<lb />

ERIC GILMORE<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Paterno, Chaney share an<lb />
unseemly ability to embarrass<lb />
(KRT) One guy is 79 years old. The other is<lb />
73. Before going any further, think of the people<lb />
you know who fit that age description.<lb />
Now, see if you can build a list of things they<lb />
have done recently to make you wince.<lb />
I'll wait. . .<lb />
OK, you can stop now. You get the point, which<lb />
is this: Whether it's your father, your grandfather,<lb />
an uncle whose underwear always seems to be<lb />
hanging out, we all have people we love and adore<lb />
who can, at any time, embarrass the hell out of us<lb />
with their words and actions.<lb />
In Joe Paterno and John Chaney, we now have<lb />
two coaches like that, two old curmudgeons who<lb />
can make us laugh one minute and curse the next,<lb />
who can make us proud to know them or of them<lb />
one day and make us run for cover the next.<lb />
After again losing to Saint Joseph's Sunday,<lb />
Chaney held a pity party for himself. He com-<lb />
plained that he was being policed by his own con-<lb />
ference because of last year's "Goongate" episode,<lb />
and he chastised reporters for not letting go of the<lb />
incident, as though it would have been just another<lb />
A-10 game without the coverage. He called himself<lb />
"a lightning rod" as if that was an accident, and not<lb />
the result of a career of flying kites in hurricanes.<lb />
Palerno, of course, made himself fodder for the<lb />
National Organization for Women down at the<lb />
Orange Bowl by doing something he has spent his<lb />
career avoiding: sharing his thoughts on something<lb />
he knows or cares little about. Asked to comment on<lb />
a Florida State linebacker accused of sexual assault,<lb />
Paterno sounded like Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinny.<lb />
He babbled on about the kid not knowing what he<lb />
was getting into, about "a cute girl" knocking on<lb />
your door.<lb />
"What do you do?" he asked, sounding genu-<lb />
inely perplexed.<lb />
see PATERNO page AW<lb />
Am I getting old when I catch myself watching<lb />
ESPN Classic? Or when 1 get nostalgic for those<lb />
ESPN anchors who accompanied my mornings as<lb />
often as my cereal? Is it right that cheesy TV graph-<lb />
ics and old school Starter jackets put me in a mood<lb />
too giddy for my own liking?<lb />
Recently while feeding an addiction to my<lb />
newly discovered digital cable sports tier, I again<lb />
found myself locked on ESPN Classic. Steve Sabol,<lb />
the ageless face of NIT. Films, was gracefully nar-<lb />
rating a piece on the NFL's greatest playoff games.<lb />
To my surprise, my grandfather's generation of<lb />
quarterbacks in Paul Hornung or Bart Starr didn't<lb />
handcuff the airwaves. And even more surprising<lb />
was that the games didn't feature Terry Bradshaw<lb />
or Roger Staubach from my dad's generation.<lb />
The games were from the 1990s, an era I can<lb />
claim as my own. The Images reinvigorated memo-<lb />
ries of Natrone Means bulldozing through defenses.<lb />
Suddenly, I recalled gasping when Jim Harbaugh's<lb />
pass was batted around in Pittsburg and conjured<lb />
up names like Jay Novacek and Alvin Harper, two<lb />
players that complemented the Dallas already<lb />
potent three-pronged attack? I remembered when<lb />
kickers Chip lohmiller and Steve Christie were<lb />
household names for the right reasons and Scott<lb />
Norwood wasn't as fortunate.<lb />
Now as we head into the depths of January,<lb />
the fuzzy playoff picture is becoming clearer. Wild<lb />
card pretenders were displaced leaving only eight<lb />
premier teams. And now upon the nitty gritty, any<lb />
mistake can cause players and their teams to head<lb />
home dejected. But if history is any lesson, heroes<lb />
will rise, legacies will be cemented and the best<lb />
team will become champion.<lb />
New England at Denver<lb />
Save a Vladimir Putin swipe, Mike Shanahan<lb />
and Bill Belichick could stock a hopeful hand full<lb />
of Super Bowl rings. Shanahan has two as a head<lb />
coach while Belichick, a rare visitor during January,<lb />
has three of his own. Rings aside, the team tout-<lb />
ing a better record and higher seed, Denver, isn't<lb />
expected to advance.<lb />
A severe underdog four years ago, New England<lb />
was crowned a dynasty in the preseason. To the<lb />
contrary with Denver, who struggled in a hapless<lb />
2004 Wild Card exit to Indianapolis. Through the<lb />
midpoint in 2005, Denver stood tall at 6-2 with a<lb />
revamped Jake Plummer. And the so-called dynasty<lb />
was experiencing a rare form of mediocrity at 4-4<lb />
after numerous injuries at key positions.<lb />
Ten weeks later, Jake Plummer has a chance<lb />
to solidify his recent Pro Bowl selection. And the<lb />
Broncos can quell the nauseating Tom Brady to Joe<lb />
Montana references. But the Patriots have playoff<lb />
extensive experience and Brady is 10-0 as a starter<lb />
in the postseason. Plus, wouldn't an AFC chain<lb />
pionship showdown with Indianapolis be more<lb />
intriguing?<lb />
Prediction: New England 26, Denver 10<lb />
Pittsburgh at Indianapolis<lb />
After winning 13 consecutive games, the Colts<lb />
lost their last meaningful game to San Diego 26-17<lb />
in the RCA Dome. A month of rest or not, momen-<lb />
lum in football can't be turned on like a faucet.<lb />
Though, the zeal of Head Coach Tony Dungy will<lb />
displace any media concerns about distractions.<lb />
Pittsburg was a Kimo von Oelhoffen cheap shot<lb />
away from getting run ragged by the Bengals. The<lb />
Palmer injury ripped the color from the Cincin-<lb />
nati TV sets. Instead, the defensive Steelers rode an<lb />
aged Bus for 52 yards into the second round. Ben<lb />

The Colts beat an injury<lb />
riddled current Steelers team<lb />
26-7 on November 28. However,<lb />
Peyton Manning's ease in pass-<lb />
ing for 245 yards coupled with<lb />
Edgerrin James' 145 yards on the<lb />
ground are areas of concern for<lb />
Bill Cowher's staff.<lb />
The Steelers are not athletic<lb />
enough in the secondary to<lb />
compete with the Colts' staple<lb />
of receivers. Look for Manning,<lb />
Dungy and the no-name defense<lb />
to make their first stand toward<lb />

Washington at Seattle<lb />
Joe Gibbs has won three<lb />
Super Bowl rings with different<lb />
quarterbacks in Joe Theismann,<lb />
Doug Williams and Mark Rypien.<lb />
But Washington quarterback<lb />
Mark Brunell, experiencing a<lb />
minor renaissance, is far from<lb />
his prime. Behind the less than<lb />
fleet-footed Brunell, the visiting<lb />
Redskins are blooming with con-<lb />
fidence having won six straight.<lb />
Seattle is the class of the<lb />
NFC. Evidence is their supreme<lb />
13-3 regular season record and<lb />
NFL MVP Shaun Alexander. The<lb />
former Alabama great surpassed<lb />
Priest Holmes' regular season<lb />
touchdown record with 27. If<lb />
Washington defensive coordi-<lb />

to stop the run.<lb />
The Redskin plan will force<lb />
Matt Hasselbeck will make good<lb />

ball to wideouts Bobby Engram<lb />
and Joejurevicius. If he does so,<lb />
Mike Holmgren could be back in<lb />
the Super Bowl for the first time<lb />
in 10 years.<lb />
Prediction: Seattle 18,<lb />
Washington 9<lb />
Carolina at Chicago<lb />
The erratic Panthers shocked<lb />
the nation with their 23-0 blow-<lb />
out of the Giants. John Fox came<lb />
up with an artistic game plan of<lb />
stopping Tiki Barber, who gained<lb />
only 41 yards. Again, the Panther<lb />
defense will be charged with<lb />
stopping the run.<lb />
Comparing the Giants to the<lb />
Bears, Chicago isn't as diverse<lb />
offensively. Rex Grossman in<lb />
his two starts has thrown for<lb />
a measly 259 yards and one<lb />
touchdown. But defensively, the<lb />
Bears are downright scary. Lovie<lb />
Smith's team has only allowed<lb />
12.6 points per game.<lb />
Remember the 13-3<lb />
embarrassment the Bears handed<lb />
to Carolina earlier? Steve Smith<lb />
caught 14 balls for 169 yards,<lb />
but the sparkplug couldn't find<lb />
the end zone. Carolina will need<lb />
some "explosion plays" to win.<lb />
Unfortunately for the home<lb />
team, their offense has none.<lb />
Prediction: Carolina 24,<lb />
Chicago 20<lb />

TALK ABOUT YOUR OWN<lb />
TEAM ONLY. OR DON'T TALK<lb />
AT ALL.<lb />
I can think of only one reason<lb />
Joe didn't heed the advice he has<lb />
given his players for decades: his<lb />
age. One day, I am convinced,<lb />
they are going to discover that<lb />
the part of the brain that blocks<lb />
the path of foolish and harmful<lb />
thoughts disintegrates as we get<lb />
older. This would not completely<lb />
explain Pat Robertson, of course,<lb />
but it could be a contributing<lb />
factor.<lb />
For years, Paterno has<lb />
shielded his players from the<lb />
media. As recently as December,<lb />
he pulled the old bait and switch<lb />
on us, inviting reporters out to<lb />
State College for a day of inter-<lb />
views with players.<lb />
Only when everyone got<lb />
there, all they got was Joe.<lb />
Here's some advice for when<lb />
Joe invites everyone out next<lb />
year: Put the players in front of<lb />
us and you go hide.<lb />
No one will be upset. Promise.<lb />
This would not be a bad idea<lb />
for ol' lightning rod, either. As<lb />
Chaney himself said after the St.<lb />
Joe's rematch, "Kids handle situ-<lb />
ations of this kind better than<lb />
adults Agreed. Let his players<lb />
put into context the rematch<lb />
with St. Joe's, the way Nehemiah<lb />
Ingram did so well after Sunday's<lb />
close loss. You? Go take a nap or<lb />
something, so when you wake<lb />
up you're not so cranky, yelling<lb />
at everybody because you didn't<lb />
get foul calls.<lb />
One thing I find awfully<lb />
interesting amid all this is how<lb />
often coaches - not just JoePa<lb />
and Chaney - paint themselves<lb />
as victims or how often their<lb />
trusted aides do. Remember,<lb />
these are the same people who<lb />
accept no excuses from the<lb />
people who play for them,<lb />
who preach accountability and<lb />
responsibility. Yet no sooner had<lb />
NOW's Pennsylvania leader said<lb />
she was "appalled" by Paterno's<lb />
comments than a spokesman at<lb />
the school was claiming he was<lb />
taken out of context.<lb />
It was on television, people.<lb />
You get cable out there in Pleas-<lb />
antville, don't you? The context<lb />
was clear for everyone to see.<lb />
Lest anyone think I am treat-<lb />
ing either man harshly, nothing<lb />
could be farther from the truth.<lb />
On the contrary, I am empathetic<lb />
to the plights of each, dealing<lb />
with a world from which most of<lb />
their peers have retired to Flor-<lb />
ida. It's no accident that JoePa<lb />
sometimes sounds like George<lb />
Costanza's dad. My parents are<lb />
slightly younger than Joe and<lb />
slightly older than John, and the<lb />
greatest challenge they face these<lb />
days is navigating their way to<lb />
the supermarket.<lb />
They often look confused,<lb />
sometimes become cantankerous<lb />
and occasionally say things they<lb />
don't really mean and haven't<lb />
really thought out. I'm not the<lb />
first one to point out that if they<lb />
live long enough, your parents<lb />
may become like your children<lb />
just as your children are becom-<lb />
ing parents.<lb />
The difference is you can't<lb />
make your parents apologize<lb />
the way you can make your kids<lb />
apologize. You can't make your<lb />
parents see the error of their<lb />
ways the way you can your kids,<lb />
because they are so set in them.<lb />
You can't send them to their<lb />
room to make them think about<lb />
it, and you can't embarrassingly<lb />
dismiss it to others with the<lb />
claim that they do not know<lb />
any better.<lb />
Instead, you can only encour-<lb />
age them to relax, take things<lb />
slower, maybe even retire.<lb />
Before they get into real<lb />
trouble.<lb />

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS - DECEMBER 17, 2005<lb />
Delivered by: Mr. Phillip R. Dixon<lb />
Mr. Dixon is a former chair of the ECU Board of Trustees<lb />
and noted Greenville attorney (Dixon, Doub, Conner ft<lb />
Foster, PLLC) and civic leader.<lb />
Good morning! What a GREAT day! On behalf of outgoing system<lb />
President Molly Broad, incoming system President Erskine Bowles,<lb />
and the 32 members of the UNC system Board of Governors, I bring<lb />
you all greetings, our congratulations, and best wishes to you and your<lb />
families for a happy and meaningful holiday season.<lb />
The UNC system consists of sixteen different campuses extending<lb />
from Wilmington to Cullowhee. It has approximately 39,000 employ-<lb />
ees, and helps educate nearly 200,000 students each year. Without<lb />
doubt, it is the finest University system in the nation. California ap-<lb />
pears second, and Michigan appears third. It benefited gready from a<lb />
$3.1 billion higher education bond issue in 1998, which is the largest<lb />
such bond issue ever passed by any state in the entire nation. You can<lb />
see the impact of these bonds on this and every other campus within<lb />
the system. In spite of recent increases in tuition and fees, the North<lb />
Carolina system remains one of the most affordable systems of higher<lb />
education in the nation. When I state that the UNC system is the<lb />
finest University system in the entire country, I am not bragging, and<lb />
I am not overstating the very high regard in which our system is held.<lb />
We can all take great pride in being a part of this campus and this<lb />
University system.<lb />
Our own ECU is the third largest campus and the fastest growing cam-<lb />
pus in this wonderful system. As the Chancellor often notes, students<lb />
are voting with their feet, and our enrollment continues to grow at an<lb />
impressive rate. ECU is very proud to have one of only two medical<lb />
schools in the system, and perhaps the finest young medical school<lb />
in the nation. It is recognized as a leader in family medicine, rural<lb />
medicine, primary care, tele-medicine, and robotic surgery. Hopefully,<lb />
Chancellor, in the near fiituic we will be adding a dental school which<lb />
will better serve our citizens, especially those in under-served areas of<lb />
Eastern North Carolina. You should also know that ECU is the lead-<lb />
ing producer of teachers and nurses and other allied health profession-<lb />
als in the system, and by far is clearly the system's leader in distance<lb />
education. No other campus currendy comes close to accomplishing<lb />
what we are accomplishing today in higher education with technology.<lb />
But I digress. On to the task at hand. You will each have many<lb />
birthdays, attend many dinner parties, celebrate many Fourths of July,<lb />
but you will have only one college graduation. It is a rich and special<lb />
event that you typically experience but once in a lifetime. This is also<lb />
indeed a celebration. It is both an ending and a beginning. To the<lb />
graduates - congratulations on your academic achievements, and on the<lb />
friendships you have built while here at the University. They both will<lb />
continue to enrich your lives through the years. Congratulations also to<lb />
the parents, spouses and families. You too should feel a sense of great<lb />
accomplishment and pride in your graduate's completion of his or her<lb />
formal schooling. Perhaps now you can expect some payback for all<lb />
those sacrifices you made financially and otherwise for these past 4, 5, 6<lb />
or more years. Perhaps most importandy, congratulations to the faculty<lb />
and staff. You should pat yourselves on the back for a job well done.<lb />
Only after some passage of time will we really know and appreciate the<lb />
impact that you have had on the lives of these young people.<lb />
It becomes the responsibility of anyone asked to address a group such<lb />
as yours to try and impart some wisdom from their years of experience.<lb />
I do not have as many years of experience as some speakers might. I,<lb />
therefore, turned to the partners and associates in my law firm for ad-<lb />
vice and counsel. We meet regularly for a firm meeting on Tuesday of<lb />
each week, and this week I asked each of them what advice they might<lb />
give to each of you. I should add that every one of the attorneys in my<lb />
office, and most of the paralegals, are proud graduates of East Carolina<lb />
University. You see, only in this way can we insure quality control in<lb />
our hiring. We take great pride in this campus. Our youngest attorney,<lb />
the one who may best remember his graduation, gives this simple advice<lb />
to you and anyone going out in the world today. Don't go. TTiat may<lb />
not be bad advice. But, assuming that you do not have that as a realistic<lb />
option, or perhaps more likely that you have already relied upon that<lb />
advice for several years of schooling beyond the normal four years, I<lb />
will turn my attention to what advice I should give you concerning<lb />
what my father used to call the "cold cruel world As I recall, my<lb />
parents had a great deal of advice for me when I was finishing school.<lb />
Other than the most obvious "get a job I recall most of it sounded<lb />
terribly boring, and you may have heard some of this advice before.<lb />
"Life isn't fair "there is no such thing as a free lunch "some good<lb />
deals aren't "money won't buy happiness "no pain, no gain "talk is<lb />
cheap "pride goes before the fall and "no man is an island Even<lb />
though those expressions are tired, they are probably still true. But let's<lb />
be more practical. What are life's dcs and don'ts? You have probably<lb />
already heard many times how to dress for an interview, and what to say<lb />
in response when they ask you what kind of salary you want, but what<lb />
are the things you really need to know? What are the things we people<lb />
in the business world look for in people who we will hire and promote?<lb />
Our world is changing. Education remains a key to success. As my<lb />
youngest partner Jeff suggests, you really should get as much educa-<lb />
tion as you possibly can. Get a Masters or professional degree, or seek<lb />
a doctorate. With our distance education offerings on the internet, it<lb />
should be easier, less expensive, and much more convenient than ever<lb />
for you to do so. Remember, there are many much less fortunate. In<lb />
my practice, I see this daily - one in five people I see in my practice<lb />
cannot read and write; one in five is functionally illiterate. Accordingly,<lb />
you are already far ahead of the average, but as time passes, more will be<lb />
required and expected of you.<lb />
Here is my list of Rules to Live By:<lb />
RULE 1. BE WILLING TO PAY THE PRICE<lb />
My wife is a very talented violinist. Her favorite virtuoso is Isaac<lb />
Stern. Someone once approached Mr. Stern and offered this praise<lb />
after a concert, "Mr. Stern, I'd give my life to play as beautifully as you<lb />
do Mr. Stern responded, "I did You graduates have already invested<lb />
four or more years as a down payment, while some of your former high<lb />
school classmates decided to spend these past four or more years else-<lb />
where beginning their careers. Today most of them are already earning<lb />
what they can expect to earn for the rest of their lives. Don't throw<lb />
that down payment you have made away. If you want to be successful<lb />
in a chosen field, find out what it takes to be the very best. This is go-<lb />
ing to include time, practice, commitment, and some sacrifice. There is<lb />
a price that must be paid. Be willing to pay the price.<lb />
RULE 2. BE SELF-DISCIPLINED<lb />
Emerson said that our primary need in life is to have somebody who<lb />
will make us do what we can do. We all have had that somebody who<lb />
has gendy prodded us along - a parent, friend or teacher. From now<lb />
on, you will have to rely more upon yourself to motivate and inspire<lb />
you to make you do what you are capable of doing. Discipline is neces-<lb />
sary to put in the necessary hours, to stay up to date in your chosen<lb />
field, to read, to use your time well, to eat right, to stay healthy to main-<lb />
tain balance in your life, and to stay with the tasks that you are given.<lb />
Remember also that it is "follow-through" that marks success. Disci-<lb />
pline is simply control. If you don't control yourself, someone else will,<lb />
or no one else will. Either case will be less desirable than self-control.<lb />
RULE 3. SET SOME GOALS<lb />
This is not the same as being disciplined. Discipline is setting your<lb />
alarm clock at 5:00 a.m. and making yourself get up when it goes off<lb />
Goal setting is knowing why you set the alarm at 5:00 a.m. in the first<lb />
place. Think about what you hope to achieve, and chart out what you<lb />
plan to achieve. If you have ever been sailing on a boat, you know that<lb />
finding the wind is not always easy. If you have no plans to go any<lb />
place special, then any wind is the right wind; but if you have a certain<lb />
waterside restaurant that you want to make by noon, then you need to<lb />
pick a specific direction and find the right wind. "Winners" in this<lb />
world expect to win in advance. Life for them becomes a self-fulfilling<lb />
prophecy. Choice, not chance, determines destiny. Make some choices<lb />
and set some goals.<lb />
RULE 4. LEARN TO GET ALONG WITH OTHERS<lb />
Studies confirm over and over again that people do not lost their jobs<lb />
because they don't have the technical know-how and the requisite skills.<lb />
Most frequendy, they simply cannot get along with other people. You<lb />
may not please all the people all the time, but you can please most of<lb />
the people most of the time - even if it is no other way than being<lb />
open to their criticism. This is particularly true with spouses and<lb />
roommates. If your employer tells you that you lose your temper too<lb />
easily, and your parents and spouse tell you the same thing, it stands to<lb />
reason that you probably lose your temper too easily. When you hear<lb />
such feedback, listen before you deny it Don't be so defensive. Evalu-<lb />
ate it, ponder it, and make any changes in your life that are in order.<lb />
RULE 5. BE A DREAMER<lb />
We have all heard the quote from George Bernard Shaw that says,<lb />
"Some men see things as they are and say why? I dream things that<lb />
never were and say why not?" We need more people in the workplace<lb />
saying "why not?" We have many problems, and we need solutions to<lb />
them. Keep your head in the clouds - Dare to Dream.<lb />
RULE 6. TAKE RISKS<lb />
Don't be afraid to fail. We need people in the business world who<lb />
strike out where there is no path, and leave a trail of their own - not<lb />
people who simply follow where the path leads.<lb />
RULE 7. STAY INFORMED<lb />
Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, "Man's mind,<lb />
once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions I<lb />
hope that is true, and I hope that you will never be satisfied to stop<lb />
learning what is going on around you. Wealth was once measured in<lb />
gold. Now it is measured in what we know. Stay alert. Keep informed.<lb />
RULE 8. BE ETHICAL<lb />
Know when to compromise and when to stick to your convictions.<lb />
What you once knew to be right and wrong is still right and wrong.<lb />
Unfortunately, the corporate world is having to learn all over again<lb />
that being ethical is what is best for business, and best for the bottom<lb />
line in the long run. Compromise can come in many forms, whether it<lb />
be decisions on insurance coverage, or how to handle hazardous waste<lb />
disposal. Right has been, and always will be, right,<lb />
RULE 9. HAVE SOME FUN<lb />
Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life.<lb />
Coach Little League. Get involved in your church or a worthwhile<lb />
community project. Do something to make the world in which we live<lb />
a better place.<lb />
RULE 10. DEFINE SUCCESS IN YOUR OWN TERMS<lb />
This is perhaps the most important rule. Some people spend their lives<lb />
climbing the ladder of success only to find that when they get to the<lb />
top, the ladder is leaning against the wrong building. Decide what you<lb />
want. Ask yourself whether you want a job traveling most of the time.<lb />
Do you want adventure and learning about the world around you? or<lb />
do you want to be at home at night with your family? Your personal<lb />
definition of success makes many seemingly difficult decisions much<lb />
easier through the years<lb />
By way of summary, do the following:<lb />
Be willing to pay the price<lb />
Be self-disciplined<lb />
Set some goals<lb />
Learn to get along well with others<lb />
Be a dreamer<lb />
Take risks<lb />
Don't be afraid to fail<lb />
Stay informed<lb />
Be ethical<lb />
Have some fun<lb />
Define success in your own terms<lb />
Some final observations:<lb />
If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over<lb />
your head, and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75 of this world.<lb />
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a<lb />
dish someplace, you are among the top 8 of the world's wealthiest<lb />
people.<lb />
If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are<lb />
more blessed than the million who will not survive the week.<lb />
If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of<lb />
imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are<lb />
ahead of 500 million people in the world.<lb />
If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest,<lb />
torture, or death, you are more blessed than 3 billion people in the<lb />
world.<lb />
If your parents are still alive and still married to each other, you are<lb />
very rare even in the United States.<lb />
If you hold up your head with a smile on your face, or are truly thank-<lb />
ful; you are blessed because a majority can, but most do not.<lb />
If you can hold someone's hand, hug them, or even touch them on the<lb />
shoulder, you are blessed because you can offer a healing touch.<lb />
If you can read, you are more blessed than over 2 billion people in the<lb />
world who cannot read at all.<lb />
I conclude with one more final observation. One of the greatest<lb />
achievements of graduation is actually being able to sit through the<lb />
commencement exercises and a speech such as this one. My personal<lb />
congratulations to each of you. Thank you.<lb /><pb facs="00059381_tn_0011" /><lb />
