CONGRATULATIONS!<lb/>
GRADUATION EDITION FALL 2005 <lb/>

THE EAST CAROLINIAN ? GRADUATION EDITION<lb/>
12-08-05<lb/>
Organization is truly key<lb/>
Being sure you have all your<lb/>
ducks in a row is vital<lb/>
CAROLYN SCANDURA<lb/>
FEATURES EDITOR<lb/>
One of the most important<lb/>
skills anyone can master is the fine<lb/>
art of organization. There is no<lb/>
right or wrong way to organize but<lb/>
there are wrong ways to manage<lb/>
your time when it is running out.<lb/>
Being less than two weeks from the<lb/>
December graduation ceremony<lb/>
seems that it would qualify as a<lb/>
period in some people's lives when<lb/>
time is running out. Not enough<lb/>
time to prepare for final exams, not<lb/>
enough time to go to The Career<lb/>
Center for that mock interview you<lb/>
have been planning on doing all<lb/>
semester and definitely not enough<lb/>
time to spend time with the people<lb/>
who got you through college day<lb/>
to day, your friends.<lb/>
Having someone else tell you<lb/>
that your time Is running out and<lb/>
you need to buckle down is the<lb/>
last thing that a December gradu-<lb/>
ate needs, what you really need<lb/>
are a few fresh ideas to help you<lb/>
get through the next few weeks<lb/>
with grace.<lb/>
First and foremost, you need to<lb/>
be sure that everything is in place<lb/>
for you to graduate on December<lb/>
17, with the rest of your depart-<lb/>
ment. Contact the graduation<lb/>
office, just to be safe, and be sure<lb/>
that you have completed all of the<lb/>
required paper work, you know<lb/>
what time you need to be at the<lb/>
ceremony and there are no- last<lb/>
minute fees or unpaid parking tick-<lb/>
ets that need to be taken care of.<lb/>
Aside from the routine admin-<lb/>
istrative items that must be taken<lb/>
care of, worrying about exams,<lb/>
papers and final group presenta-<lb/>
tions can be hectic and if some<lb/>
sort of organization is not in place,<lb/>
Important things can be missed.<lb/>
Try either making a to-do list,<lb/>
writing out sticky notes or using a<lb/>
month-overview planner. That will<lb/>
allow you to see when things are<lb/>
due, how long you have to do them<lb/>
and what other events must occur<lb/>
in that time period. Many people<lb/>
find It useful to plan events in<lb/>
order of pleasure. Not many people<lb/>
find pleasure in writing their 15-<lb/>
page history paper, but may find<lb/>
pleasure in holiday shopping. Put<lb/>
all of your tasks in order of what<lb/>
must be done and what you truly<lb/>
do not want to do. If you start with<lb/>

Center for help<lb/>
This student resource can<lb/>
be invaluable for students<lb/>
CAROLYN SCANDURA<lb/>
FEATURES EDITOR<lb/>
Finding a good ob is one of<lb/>
the most common worries of any<lb/>
student who is soon to graduate.<lb/>
There are so many paths to take,<lb/>
so many.companies to choose from<lb/>
and so much preparation that must<lb/>
be done. More so, what about the<lb/>
problem of employers only want-<lb/>
ing to hire people with experience<lb/>
but no one can get experience<lb/>
without being hired? Fortunately,<lb/>
ECU has a The Career Center to<lb/>
help students down the long hard<lb/>
road of ob hunting.<lb/>
If you have not already made<lb/>
contact with The Career Center,<lb/>
it Is never too late. The center<lb/>
describes their primary focus as<lb/>
providing assistance and guidance<lb/>
to students and alumni in their<lb/>
career quest. One little known fact<lb/>
about The Career Center is that<lb/>
they are available to help students<lb/>
at any point in their college career,<lb/>
whether they are freshman, soon<lb/>
to graduate seniors or alumni. This<lb/>
resource, which is a department<lb/>
within the division of Academic<lb/>
Affairs, helps students to fine<lb/>
tune their job-hunting skills and<lb/>
increase their confidence in high-<lb/>
stress interview situations.<lb/>
The Career Center uses a<lb/>
system they call e3, a combination<lb/>
of student exploration, experience<lb/>
and engagement in community<lb/>
resources. As described on their<lb/>
Web site, "Exploration is the foun-<lb/>
dation, Experience Is the practical<lb/>
application and Engagement is<lb/>
the point where you take control<lb/>
of your destiny Community<lb/>
resources range from members of<lb/>
the university, employers, agencies<lb/>
and other external populations<lb/>
such as other university popula-<lb/>
tions. Through their well-con-<lb/>
nected network, The Career Center<lb/>
can keep many employers as their<lb/>
partners, which can help students<lb/>
to initiate opportunities in public,<lb/>
private, governmental and corpo-<lb/>
rate sectors of work.<lb/>
In a society like today's every-<lb/>
one is looking for instant grati-<lb/>
fication. So what can The Career<lb/>
Center do for you, right now? They<lb/>
provide workshops, programs and<lb/>
opportunities for students that will<lb/>
help Improve and encourage career<lb/>
exploration, practical work experi-<lb/>
ence and professional develop-<lb/>
ment. All of these capabilities are<lb/>

The tree eRecrultlng service con-<lb/>
nects students and alumni with<lb/>
employers. Members of eRecrutlng<lb/>
can search for fobs, Internships,<lb/>
co-ops and employers can review<lb/>
resumes of those looking for work.<lb/>
Register with eRecrultlng by com-<lb/>
pleting the one-page registration<lb/>
form on their Web site and faxing<lb/>
It to 328-6425 or by returning it to<lb/>
the above address through the mall<lb/>
or in person.<lb/>
possible through their extensive<lb/>
experience with employers all over<lb/>
the country as well as the technol-<lb/>
ogy they utilize to communicate<lb/>
with these employers.<lb/>
One of the most valuable tools<lb/>
that The Career Center has to offer<lb/>
students is the mock-interview.<lb/>
This process allows students to<lb/>
go to the office, dressed in profes-<lb/>
sional attire and sit with a trained<lb/>
professional and go though the<lb/>
typical interview for their chosen<lb/>
career. There are many career spe-<lb/>
cialists on their staff, one of whom<lb/>
will be able to guide students<lb/>
through resume writing, what<lb/>
kind of answers are appropriate for<lb/>
typical questions and what type of<lb/>
questions the student should ask<lb/>
an Interviewer.<lb/>
"After visiting The Career<lb/>
Center, I have felt better prepared<lb/>
in interview situations, more con-<lb/>
fident about my resume and very<lb/>
connected with the work world<lb/>
said senior Industrial Technology<lb/>
major Nicholas Walters.<lb/>
"I am graduating on the<lb/>
December 17 and the help I<lb/>
received at The Career Center has<lb/>
been Invaluable<lb/>
With graduation approaching<lb/>
quickly, this is a very busy time<lb/>
of year for The Career Center so<lb/>
appointments are necessary. Be<lb/>
sure to be prepared with questions,<lb/>
goals and any companies that you<lb/>
would like to be put in touch with.<lb/>
The Career Center is a great tool for<lb/>
students to utilize whether they<lb/>
are graduating this month, next<lb/>
semester or in the next few years.<lb/>

Graduation from page A2<lb/>
that Item, use some energy on concentrating<lb/>
and just getting it done, all of your other<lb/>
tasks will seem much less stressful.<lb/>
No matter how much you have to do, one<lb/>
of the most important parts of stress and time<lb/>
management is saving some time for your-<lb/>
self. Whether it be taking the time to watch<lb/>
NipTuck or going<lb/>
to the gym, these<lb/>
little breaks from all<lb/>
of your responsibili-<lb/>
ties can really help<lb/>
relieve stress. If you<lb/>
are really in a time<lb/>
crunch, try com-<lb/>
bining those plea-<lb/>
sure activities with<lb/>
another required<lb/>
task. Watch your<lb/>
favorite television<lb/>
show and wrap holi-<lb/>
day gifts or go to<lb/>
the gym and study<lb/>
while you are on<lb/>
the exercise bike. The old saying, "kill two<lb/>
birds with one stone" definitely applies here.<lb/>
If you feel like everything is getting<lb/>
out of hand and you are going to have a<lb/>
nervous break down, be sure to stop what<lb/>
you are doing, take a break and breathe.<lb/>
There are many relaxation-breathing<lb/>
techniques that really can help calm your<lb/>
nerves. Try looking on the Internet for some<lb/>
tips and trick on how to relax. Stress can<lb/>
drastically decrease your productivity and<lb/>
so can sleep deprivation.<lb/>
One of the most popular comments<lb/>
heard out of any student's mouth is, "I'm<lb/>
just so tired College students often do not<lb/>
get enough sleep and it can affect all of their<lb/>
everyday tasks. When planning your day,<lb/>
be sure you plan enough time in there for<lb/>
sleep. If you don't you will end<lb/>
up dragging your feet all day<lb/>
and getting less done that you<lb/>
needed to. Taking those extra<lb/>
two hours to sleep will not<lb/>
only make you feel better, but<lb/>
will also increase how much<lb/>
you get done. If you are having<lb/>
trouble getting to sleep, again<lb/>
use the Internet as a resource.<lb/>
There are many Web sites that<lb/>
can help you find new ways to<lb/>
g. calm your mind so that you<lb/>
I can sleep.<lb/>
t Everyone has so many<lb/>
things to do at this time of<lb/>
year, getting it all done seems<lb/>
impossible. Searching for jobs, perfecting<lb/>
your resume, going to work, studying for<lb/>
exams and still managing to perform the<lb/>
human tasks of eating and sleeping can seem<lb/>
Impossible, but taking a few minutes each day<lb/>
to plan your time and prioritize your tasks<lb/>
can be a great tool not only in the upcoming<lb/>
weeks; but for the rest of your life.<lb/>
