My Random Column<lb />
The end is here<lb />
Is anyone else glad that the semester is finally<lb />
over and we are free for a few weeks?<lb />
As for myself I am glad the semester is over.<lb />
The long hours of working here, plus the time-<lb />
consuming tasks of school and homework<lb />
are drawing to a close and I am finally able to<lb />
sleep in for once In many weeks. No longer<lb />
will you see guys sleeping on the benches of<lb />
the second floor of Bate or friends so hyper<lb />
they can't sit still from caffeine pills and too<lb />
much sugar.<lb />
Classwork, homework, studying and finals are<lb />
all coming to a rapid close. We here at TEC<lb />
would like to wish you all a happy holiday<lb />
season and a relaxing break.<lb />
As for myself, I am heading to the West Coast<lb />
to spend time with members of my family that<lb />
I haven't seen in several months. I am excited<lb />
and will enjoy the much needed break.<lb />
I just wanted to extend an invitation to work with<lb />
us this upcoming semester. All you need to do<lb />
is come in with a resume and fill out an applica-<lb />
tion. We need more staff writers, photographers<lb />
and copy editors. If you are interested, please<lb />
come in because we would love to have you.<lb />
It has been great hearing from all of you in pirate<lb />
rants and letters to the editor, and I hope you will<lb />
continue giving us feedback next semester.<lb />
I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday<lb />
break. Enjoy spending time with your families,<lb />
and friends. I hope travel is easy and safe.<lb />

Things that I absolutely love right now<lb />
Step one toward my New<lb />
Year's resolution<lb />
GARY MCCABE<lb />
BITTER BOULEVARD<lb />
This semester has really taken<lb />
its toll on me. I've always consid-<lb />
ered myself a pretty unhappy,<lb />
cynical person, but as of writing<lb />
this article I've finally reached<lb />
a level that even I think is<lb />
unhealthy.<lb />
I've turned into a very<lb />
anti-social person. I walk across<lb />
campus with my head down like<lb />
Charlie Brown on Christmas Eve.<lb />
I wear dark sunglasses to avoid eye<lb />
contact with people. I keep my<lb />
headphones on so I don't have to<lb />
hear people. I've closed off most<lb />
lines of communication with<lb />
people and prefer to be alone. I<lb />
can blame it on my mountain of<lb />
schoolwork and my multiple TEC<lb />
articles, but to be honest, I think<lb />
it's of my own doing.<lb />
I'm an angry person. How-<lb />
ever, I never realized just how<lb />
angry I've become lately. I guess<lb />
writing an opinion piece listing<lb />
the 10 things that I hate most is<lb />
a pretty clear sign that I've got a<lb />
problem - especially when one<lb />
entry on the list consisted of<lb />
more than 60 percent of Ameri-<lb />
cans (although that was sort of<lb />
tongue-in-cheek.)<lb />
I guess the second sign was the<lb />
other day when I was in my Copy<lb />
Editing and Design class when<lb />
one of the lovely young ladies in<lb />
my group, while talking about<lb />
a recent article of mine, asked,<lb />
"Why are you so angry? You seem<lb />
like a really nice guy And I didn't<lb />
have an answer for her.<lb />
So here's the deal. Most people<lb />
get depressed around the holi-<lb />
days. I'm going to do the opposite.<lb />
My New Year's resolution is going<lb />
to be just that. I want to be social<lb />
and fun. I want to be the person<lb />
people like to be around - not the<lb />
person they like to write nasty<lb />
pirate rants about.<lb />
So my first step is to respond<lb />
to last week's venomous article<lb />
where I simply named 10 things I<lb />
hated. I'm going to use this space<lb />
as a companion piece - things<lb />
I love. Hopefully I can think<lb />
of some things. And hopefully<lb />
Bush will do something stupid<lb />
over Christmas break so I can<lb />
tear him apart when I get back<lb />
so I never have to write about<lb />
myself again.<lb />
Puggles and Pandogs. Go<lb />
to Google Images and type in<lb />
"puggle" and then "pandog" and<lb />
brace yourself for what could pos-<lb />
sibly be the cutest little animals<lb />
ever - that is, 1 suppose, until<lb />
dog breeders get to work on the<lb />
"panduggle<lb />
Michelle Rodriguez's<lb />
DL'I. Last week I was upset that<lb />
Rodriguez was ruining "Lost"<lb />
with her poor acting and Clint<lb />
Eastwood-with-breasts dialogue<lb />
and delivery. All season I've<lb />
been hoping that somehow her<lb />
character would fall off a cliff or<lb />
be eaten by Hurley - anything<lb />
so long as she doesn't appear on<lb />
the show any longer and it can<lb />
get back to the characters that<lb />
made it great.<lb />
Last week, Rodriguez was<lb />
pulled over in Hawaii for driving<lb />
under the influence of alcohol<lb />
- but wait, it gets better. She's<lb />
on probation in California for<lb />
the same offense and this latest<lb />
arrest could end in jail time and<lb />
subsequently would have to be<lb />
written off the show.<lb />
George Bush's "holiday"<lb />
cards. The Religious Right is<lb />
boycotting businesses like Target<lb />
for offering customers a "Happy<lb />
Holidays" rather than the<lb />
traditional "Merry Christmas<lb />
Well, apparently our Commander<lb />
and Chief sent out his annual<lb />
batch of cards wishing recipients<lb />
a very "Happy Holidays Great<lb />
- hopefully the Religious Right<lb />
now will boycott their Golden<lb />
Boy Bush and we finally get<lb />
that approval rating down to<lb />
single digits. I know we can do if<lb />
we try<lb />
The Opie 8c Anthony<lb />
Show. You may recognize their<lb />
names even if you're not a fan of<lb />
talk radio. They were fired from<lb />
WNEW in New York City when a<lb />
promotion of theirs ended with a<lb />
couple having sex in St. Patrick's<lb />
Cathedral. They sat on the bench<lb />
for two and a half years and made<lb />
the jump to XM, but it didn't take<lb />
long before they found them-<lb />
selves in trouble again.<lb />
They currently run a<lb />
promotion called "Assault on<lb />
the Media" where they encour-<lb />
age fans to jump into the shot<lb />
of live news screaming "Opie<lb />
and Anthony and holding up<lb />
signs. Apparently, one fan took<lb />
it way too far and blew an<lb />
air horn in the ear of an ABC<lb />
newsman. Opie and Anthony<lb />
were given the rest of the week<lb />
off on Wednesday and things are<lb />
beginning to look eerily similar<lb />
to what happened after the St.<lb />
Patty's incident.<lb />
Rumors are going around<lb />
- where else? - the Internet that<lb />
heads might roll because the<lb />
interim governor of New Jersey<lb />
is involved now. However, I<lb />
doubt that would happen. Opie<lb />
and Anthony put on a great<lb />
show and are XM's only viable<lb />
alternative to Howard Stern once<lb />
he moves to Sirius. It's a shame,<lb />
though. Every time the show gets<lb />
in trouble, it's for their idiotic<lb />
fans, not them. If the show lasts<lb />
another week, please check it out.<lb />
If it doesn't, I suppose I had better<lb />
start pricing Sirius receivers.<lb />
Christmas Break. I can't<lb />
be the only one who needs a<lb />
break. The past three and a half<lb />
months have worn on all of us<lb />
but it's been especially brutal<lb />
on me. I'm a few credits from<lb />
graduating so it's a mad dash to<lb />
get them in before the end of<lb />
the spring semester and unfortu-<lb />
nately, it's added up to 20 credit<lb />
hours this semester. I just want to<lb />
get out of Greenville where there<lb />
are no schedules, no due dates<lb />
and no obligations so I can come<lb />
back here in January with new<lb />
batteries, ready to take on the<lb />
world. I feel better already.<lb />
In My Opinion<lb />
(KRT) I don't know about<lb />
you, but I sometimes grow weary<lb />
hearing big-picture thinkers tell us<lb />
we need more mathematicians and<lb />
scientists. Maybe it was because I<lb />
wasn't very interested in those sub-<lb />
jects as a kid. Whatever, all the talk<lb />
about math and science can leave my<lb />
politics-and-history mind blank.<lb />
Several students in suburban<lb />
Allen, Texas, said the same thing<lb />
the other day. When I asked a<lb />
classroom of high schoolers how<lb />
many wanted to study math and<lb />
science in college, one student<lb />
shot up his hand and said we<lb />
shouldn't forget the "bohemian"<lb />
side of the brain, meaning the side<lb />
that worries about things like war<lb />
and peace. A number of his fellow<lb />
students nodded.<lb />
I like their independence, but<lb />
here's the plain truth that people<lb />
like me need to remember: We<lb />
either champion math and sci-<lb />
ence, or we lose our footing in the<lb />
world. That's hard to imagine since<lb />
we're the Big Cat economically,<lb />
militarily and politically.<lb />
But if our schools downplay<lb />
math and science, Americans will<lb />
become the 7-foot basketball player<lb />
who stumbled over his own clumsy<lb />
feet running down the court.<lb />
While we're trying to get back up,<lb />
little fast guys will run right by.<lb />
I .iin.i! Alexander sounds like<lb />
a prophet when you get him<lb />
talking about this challenge. You<lb />
might expect that from a former<lb />
secretary of education and ex-uni-<lb />
versity president.<lb />
Now a Republican senator<lb />
from Tennessee, he worries about<lb />
India and China producing more<lb />
engineers than the United States.<lb />
It bothers him that we lose top<lb />
students from other countries after<lb />
they attend our colleges. And he's<lb />
concerned that our job base will rot<lb />
without enough of the science and<lb />
technology students who've pro-<lb />
pelled our economy since the 1960s.<lb />
Alexander is using his Senate<lb />
seat to try to correct these shortcom-<lb />
ings, championing a math-and-<lb />
science initiative that could turn<lb />
into this generation's moon shot.<lb />
The two-time presidential candi-<lb />
date also believes the issue could<lb />
help rescue his party from its dol-<lb />
drums, where Democrats outpace<lb />
Republicans in every issue except<lb />
leadership, according to a recent<lb />
ABC NewsWashington Post poll.<lb />
During a recent interview as<lb />
the Senate wrapped up a day of<lb />
business, he started our talk by<lb />
handing me a piece of paper that<lb />
he carries around like a daily Bible<lb />
verse. It featured this quote from<lb />
Nobel Prize physicist Steven Chu:<lb />
"The single most important thing<lb />
that America must do is keep its<lb />
edge in science and technology<lb />
Alexander and a few colleagues<lb />
asked the National Academy<lb />
of Sciences to outline the 10<lb />
most important things Amer-<lb />
ica can do to keep that edge.<lb />
They came back with "Rising<lb />
Above the Gathering Storm a<lb />
report that includes these goals:<lb />
-Improve K-12 math and sci-<lb />
ence education.<lb />
-Strengthen the nation's com-<lb />
mitment to research.<lb />
-Increase the talent pool by<lb />
improving higher education.<lb />
-Provide more incentives struc-<lb />
ture for innovation.<lb />
Each goal contains specific<lb />
requests. They range from recruit-<lb />
ing 10,000 science and math<lb />
teachers to increasing federal<lb />
investment in fundamental<lb />
research to providing 25,000 new<lb />
scholarships for U.S. undergrads to<lb />
ensuring that all Americans have<lb />
broadband Internet access.<lb />
Alexander is drafting a bill<lb />
with Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M<lb />
to include these ideas.<lb />
That's right, working with a<lb />
Democrat. This is the sort of cause<lb />
that transcends party politics, and<lb />
that's one reason Alexander hopes<lb />
President Bush makes it a center-<lb />
piece of his State of the Union<lb />
message next month. Only the<lb />
president, he says, can truly focus<lb />
the nation on this need, and that<lb />
includes reaching students like<lb />
those I spoke with in Allen.<lb />
The move would help the<lb />
president, too. He needs domes-<lb />
tic issues to save himself from a<lb />
ruined presidency. Iraq's not going<lb />
to do it, that's for sure.<lb />
Alexander, of course, knows a<lb />
few things about the presidency.<lb />
The last you probably heard of<lb />
him was when he was running for<lb />
the White House in his red plaid<lb />
shirt. He fell short of the GOP<lb />
nomination in 1996 and 2000<lb />
because he doesn't ooze intimacy<lb />
on the tube or hurl lightning bolts<lb />
at opponents.<lb />
I now agree that God is a little kid on an anthill, but he<lb />
isn't holding a magnifying glass - he's got a fan and a<lb />
bucket of icy water. And he's laughing.<lb />
Mr. McCabe, does it pain you to write that dribble as<lb />
much as it does for me to read ft.<lb />
Hey stupid with the rant about Kanye and WZMB.<lb />
Do you listen? WZMB is the best station in all of<lb />
Greenville.<lb />
Thank you Ms. Verna for cleaning up Jones Hall so<lb />
nicely! I just love seeing your smiling face everyday!<lb />
Thanks again!<lb />
It is absolutely ridiculous to have to make an appointment<lb />
to get blood taken when you already have the prescrip-<lb />
tion for it and the only reason for the appointment is so<lb />
some nurse can sign the slip that the doctor has already<lb />
signed, who is the doctor that ordered the blood to be<lb />
taken in the first place!<lb />
Once again, thank you TEC for telling us about events<lb />
after they happen. I would have loved to go to the World<lb />
War II talk two weeks ago, but all I got from it was an<lb />
article and a picture. I would also love to see the hockey<lb />
team, but since they never play tomorrow (they always<lb />
play yesterday) I guess I'll never get to see them. Why<lb />
not put upcoming sports events in the margins instead<lb />
of stupid fashion ideas, movies that no one watches and<lb />
albums that are just commercialized, sold-out junk. Try<lb />
being effective at communicating the news and future<lb />
events.<lb />
Why are all the computers in the Austin Lab so crappy<lb />
they take forever to load and I do not have enough time<lb />
in my day to deal with that? The other day there was a<lb />
line all the way out the door. I mean come on, buy some<lb />
good computers like Gateways!<lb />
I am Ranting because my Rant never gets posted. I read<lb />
TEC every time it comes out in hope that they would get<lb />
posted. I think this thing is rigged.<lb />
; Anybody else feel like they're talking to someone from<lb />
! another planet when they talk to the opposite sex? I<lb />
do!<lb />
Tony McKee, I find it interesting that you hate when<lb />
i "Liberals" push their views onto others, but you are<lb />
advocating pushing your views on the Christmas issue<lb />
on the entire campus. Maybe, just maybe, some people<lb />
have a different religious holiday and don't give a crap<lb />
if your Christmas is merry. "Happy Holidays works for<lb />
every religion. Show some respect.<lb />
Our country was founded on the principle of freedom<lb />
of religion, not the suppression of all religions. Suppres-<lb />
sion of religion is why we left our respective countries<lb />
of origin.<lb />
Why is there a noise policy on college hill if all we have<lb />
to listen to during exams is f construction! I mean<lb />
the jackhammers and construction workers is 10,000<lb />
times louder than anyone in the actual dorms. Get your<lb />
policy right people.<lb />
To the people in the back of Jones who are working for<lb />
the Galley, can you please stop slamming doors, talking<lb />
obnoxiously loud, smoking, backing up trucks that beep<lb />
warnings, loading and unloading stuff at two o'clock in<lb />
the morning! This is a 24-hour quiet zone and if I can get<lb />
written up for violating that, then you should too!<lb />
There was a horoscope in yesterday's paper. I thought The<lb />
East Carolinian stopped doing those. What a relief I once<lb />
again have a way of making important life decisions!<lb />
Why in the world is my comment to Tony McKee's ridicu-<lb />
lous article no longer posted under his editorial?<lb />
Gary McCabe, I almost look forward to hating your<lb />
articles on a weekly basis now. I haven't read writing of<lb />
your caliber since I flipped through a copy of the National<lb />
Enquirer in the grocery store line.<lb />
As a Southerner myself, I can say that Southerners take<lb />
pride in their hospitality and politeness. Saying "excuse<lb />
me" when you didn't hear someone can sound offensive.<lb />
"Do what? is a polite way for Southerners to ask you to<lb />
repeat yourself. Hope that feeds your concern.<lb />
As a member of the vast right-wing conspiracy, I say Tony<lb />
McKee is an embarrassment as a Republican. Yes, he<lb />
writes on conservative political issues, but It seems more<lb />
like he "copies and pastes" the e-mails you get from your<lb />
annoying co-workers and calls them articles.<lb />
Kristin Day, it's sad to see that this last article of your<lb />
long, seven-week process was produced on such a whim.<lb />
Your words seemed careless, almost as though people<lb />
who read your article wouldn't catch on that you may<lb />
not have been to passionate about the subect.<lb />
Freshmen, just in case you haven't noticed, we don't<lb />
wear other schools' apparel. We had a huge article about<lb />
wearing other schools named in the newspaper last year.<lb />
If you're getting dirty looks around campus, especially if<lb />
you're wearing a State or UNC shirt, it's probably because<lb />
you aren't supporting ECU.<lb />
What the heck is up with the news section writing<lb />
; features stories? They're twice as corny and not as wefl<lb />
I written. Stick to news, it's what you're Defter at. Having<lb />
I two restaurant reviews on the same day in two different<lb />
sections is a great way to embarrass your newspaper.<lb />
Terry Holland is the greatest AD ever. As of Dec. 6 ECU<lb />
will no longer be associated with men's pansy ball I<lb />
mean soccer. Thank you Terry Holland for dropping<lb />
soccer and freeing up more money for football.<lb />
Why are students so stressed out over final exams? It's<lb />
final exams, not the end of the world.<lb />
Everyone wants to complain about the tuition Increase<lb />
; but only a handful of people showed up to address the<lb />
issue. Complaining is nof going to get you anywhere.<lb />
You have a voice use it!<lb />
Tony McKee's article is the best article I've ever read in<lb />
! TEC! Go Tony!<lb />
j I was late to class on Tuesday because a monk In front of<lb />
Joyner thwarted me! Talk about bizarre.<lb />
I News flash Trevor: Rent is a rock opera, if you were to see<lb />
the stage production it would be nothing but singing.<lb />
; But hey buddy I won't hold It against you. Learn how to<lb />
use spell check, learn how to use grammar check, and<lb />
learn how to give good movies good reviews and you<lb />
should be fine.<lb />
To the guy at Todd who dropped his tray in front of the<lb />
whole cafeteria: my friends and I didn't laugh. We actu-<lb />
ally ran out looking for you And to the people who did<lb />
laugh, get a freaking life, you are in college now, start<lb />
acting like it! 6<lb />
j It's fairly obvious that the writer of the Lone Star review<lb />
failed to do some research, since their restaurant sani-<lb />
tation rating was 68.0 on July 18 of this year. It's also<lb />
abundantly obvious that the managers and staff there<lb />
knew he was reviewing the place for the newspaper.<lb />
Thanks to the Black Student Union for addressing stereo-<lb />
types, discrimination and racism in a great forum. Now I<lb />
ust wish that the administration would address it.<lb />
Ladies, I love you and by you I mean plural "all of you<lb />
Jo the person who had a "Gentleman" give his seat up<lb />
for her, this is a front! I have gotten on many crowded<lb />
buses and was never once offered a seat. Why' Because I<lb />
am probably not skinny or pretty enough for them, or I<lb />
am not a Sorority girl Not that I care, however!<lb />
Do not tell a girl you want to be single for a while. Just<lb />
say, I m sorry, I am just not interested in you We know<lb />
that those lines are bullsh't!<lb />

Air marshal kills passenger at Miami airport<lb />
MIAMI (AP) An agitated<lb />
passenger who claimed to have<lb />
a bomb in his backpack was shot<lb />
and killed by a federal air mar-<lb />
shal Wednesday after he bolted<lb />
frantically from a jetliner that<lb />
was boarding for takeoff, officials<lb />
said. No bomb was found.<lb />
It was the first time since<lb />
the Sept. 11 attacks that an air<lb />
marshal had shot at anyone,<lb />
Homeland Security Department<lb />
spokesman Brian Doyle said.<lb />
Another federal official said<lb />
there was no apparent link to<lb />
terrorism.<lb />
According to a witness, the<lb />
passenger ran down the aisle of<lb />
the Boeing 757, flailing his arms,<lb />
while his wife tried to explain<lb />
that he was mentally ill and had<lb />
not taken his medication.<lb />
The passenger, identified<lb />
as Rigoberto Alpizar, indicated<lb />
there was a bomb in his bag and<lb />
was confronted by air marshals<lb />
but ran off the aircraft, Doyle<lb />
said. The marshals went after<lb />
him and ordered him to get<lb />
down on the ground, but he did<lb />
not comply and was shot when<lb />
he apparently reached into the<lb />
bag, Doyle said.<lb />
Alpizar, a 44-year-old U.S.<lb />
citizen, was gunned down on<lb />
a jetway outside the American<lb />
Airlines plane, which was parked<lb />
at a gate at Miami International<lb />
Airport. Alpizar had arrived<lb />
earlier in the day from Quito,<lb />
Ecuador, and Flight 924 was<lb />
going to Orlando, near his home<lb />
in Maitland.<lb />
Relatives said Alpizar and<lb />
his wife had been on a working<lb />
vacation in Peru. A neighbor who<lb />
said he had been asked to watch<lb />
the couple's home described the<lb />
vacation as a missionary trip.<lb />
"We're all still in shock.<lb />
We're just speechless a sister-<lb />
in-law, Kelley Beuchner, said<lb />
by telephone from her home in<lb />
Milwaukee.<lb />
The shooting occurred<lb />
shortly after 2 p.m. as Flight 924<lb />
was about to take off for Orlando<lb />
with the man and 119 other<lb />
passengers and crew, American<lb />
spokesman Tim Wagner said.<lb />
After the shooting, investi-<lb />
gators spread passengers' bags<lb />
on the tarmac and let dogs sniff<lb />
them for explosives, and bomb<lb />
squad members blew up at least<lb />
two bags.<lb />
No bomb was found, said<lb />
James E. Bauer, agent in charge<lb />
of the Federal Air Marshals field<lb />
office in Miami. He said there was<lb />
no reason to believe there was any<lb />
connection to terrorists.<lb />
The concourse where the<lb />
shooting took place was shut<lb />
down for a half-hour, but the rest<lb />
of the airport continued operat-<lb />
ing, officials said.<lb />
Federal officials declined<lb />
to say how many times Alpizar<lb />
was shot, or reveal how many air<lb />
marshals were on the plane.<lb />
Mary Gardner, a passen-<lb />
ger aboard the Orlando-bound<lb />
flight, told WTVJ-TV in Miami<lb />
that the man ran down the aisle<lb />
from the rear of the plane. "He<lb />
Post 9-11, violence is seen aboard American Airlines fligh 924.<lb />
was frantic, his arms flailing<lb />
in the air she said. She said a<lb />
woman followed, shouting, "My<lb />
husband! My husband<lb />
Gardner said she heard the<lb />
woman say her husband was<lb />
bipolar, a mental illness also<lb />
known as manic-depression, and<lb />
had not had his medication.<lb />
Gardner said four to five<lb />
shots were fired. She could not<lb />
see the shooting.<lb />
After the shooting, police<lb />
boarded the plane and told the<lb />
passengers to put their hands on<lb />
their heads, Gardner said.<lb />
"It was quite scary she told<lb />
the TV station via a cell phone.<lb />
"They wouldn't let you move.<lb />
They wouldn't let you get any-<lb />
thing out of your bag<lb />
Alpizar's brother-in-law,<lb />
Steven Beuchner, said he was a<lb />
native of Costa Rica, and met<lb />
Beuchner's sister, Anne, when<lb />
she was an exchange student<lb />
there. Relatives said the couple<lb />
had been married about two<lb />
decades.<lb />
Neighbors described Alpizar<lb />
as a pleasant man who worked in<lb />
the paint department of a home-<lb />
supply store and spent his spare<lb />
time tending to the lawn of his<lb />
ranch-style house. Many found it<lb />
incomprehensible that he could<lb />
have made a bomb threat.<lb />
"He was a nice guy, always<lb />
smiling, always talkative Louis<lb />
Gunther said. "Everybody is talk-<lb />
ing about a guy I know nothing<lb />
about<lb />

Got Questions?<lb />
Dear Features,<lb />
It's getting cold outside and I was<lb />
wondering If flannel Is still "In" or If It<lb />
lost its popularity like grunge music<lb />
did?<lb />
-I love the 90s<lb />
Dear I love the 90s,<lb />
While some believe that the flannel<lb />
shirt and jeans combination should<lb />
stay In the era of Nirvana and Pearl<lb />
Jam, we're starting to think that<lb />
the always toasty flannel shirts are<lb />
making a comeback. If you've seen<lb />
those Old Navy commercials they're<lb />
running for the holidays, they feature<lb />
a very attractive man (think of the<lb />
Brawny paper towel man) wearing<lb />
their new flannel shirts. I'd say that It's<lb />
a safe bet to Invest In a flannel shirt or<lb />
two and if the trend disappears again,<lb />
at least you'll have a set of clothes<lb />
for camping.<lb />

HOLIDAY MOVIES SURE TO WARM<lb />
HEARTS, PROVIDE ENTERTAINMENT<lb />
Watching movies with loved ones Is a great holiday activity.<lb />
Top 10 holiday movies<lb />
SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
During the holiday season,<lb />
one of my favorite things to<lb />
do is watch holiday movies<lb />
with my family and friends.<lb />
There is nothing better than<lb />
sharing laughter, tears and<lb />
excitement with the people<lb />
closest to your heart. If you're<lb />
looking for perfect holiday<lb />
movies to enjoy with family<lb />
or friends, look no further.<lb />
Home Alone<lb />
Nothing makes you appre-<lb />
ciate family more than this<lb />
movie. McCauley Culkin stars<lb />
as 8-year-old Kevin McCal-<lb />
lister who wakes up to find<lb />
that his family has left for<lb />
Christmas vacation without<lb />
him. He's thrilled to be home<lb />
alone, until two burglars attempt<lb />
to break in. By the end of the<lb />
movie you are reminded exactly<lb />
what family is all about and<lb />
the true meaning of the winter<lb />
holidays.<lb />
National Lampoon's<lb />
Christmas Vacation<lb />
Trouble ensues when Clark<lb />
Grlswold, played by Chevy Chase,<lb />
invites his entire extended family<lb />
over for Christmas. One thing<lb />
after another goes wrong for the<lb />
Griswolds, but they stick together<lb />
as a family through it all. This<lb />
movie will have you laughing<lb />
out loud from start to finish and<lb />
leave you feeling just a bit better<lb />
about your own eccentric family.<lb />
How the Grtnch Stole<lb />
Christmas<lb />
The animated version of this<lb />
movie is my favorite, because<lb />
growing up I remember watching<lb />
this classic on television every<lb />
year with my entire family. The<lb />
grinch is disgusted with the<lb />
happiness that Christmas brings<lb />
to the Whos in Whoville, so he<lb />
plots a way to ruin Christmas.<lb />
The tables eventually turn and<lb />
he ends up becoming just as<lb />
jubilant as the Whos. This movie<lb />
reminds me that a little bit of<lb />
kindness can mean the world to<lb />
someone.<lb />
Love Actually<lb />
I fell in love with this movie<lb />
the first time I saw it. The premise<lb />
of the movie is that "love actu-<lb />
ally is everywhere The movie<lb />
is set around Christmas time and<lb />
filled with characters searching<lb />
for or, in some cases, stumbling<lb />
upon love. The stories represent<lb />
different kinds of love, bolstered<lb />
with various obstacles for each<lb />
character. If you're a victim of a<lb />
broken heart, this movie will give<lb />
you hope and make you believe<lb />
in love again.<lb />
The Santa Clause<lb />
This movie is one of the best<lb />
because you get a peak inside the<lb />
lives of Santa and everyone else<lb />
living at the North Pole. When<lb />
Santa Clause falls off the roof<lb />
of Scott Calvin's (Tim Allen)<lb />
house on Christmas Eve his son<lb />
convinces him to put on the red<lb />
suit. After doing so he begins<lb />
delivering gifts to the children of<lb />
the world and wakes up to find<lb />
himself at the North Pole. Over<lb />
the next year Scott transforms<lb />
into Santa, creating questions<lb />
among friends, coworkers and<lb />
family. This movie gives me hope<lb />
that anything is possible if you<lb />
just believe.<lb />
Miracle on 34,H Street<lb />
When the real Santa Clause<lb />
begins working at Macy's, mira-<lb />
cles follow closely behind. How-<lb />
ever, when he begins telling<lb />
people that he is actually Santa<lb />
Clause rather than just a store<lb />
Santa, he is thought to be crazy.<lb />
However, thanks to believers<lb />
around the world faith is restored<lb />
in him as well as the friends he<lb />
makes along the way. There are<lb />
two versions of this movie, both<lb />
are alike and just about equal<lb />
in quality but history proves<lb />
originals to be better.<lb />
A Christmas Carol<lb />
There are so many versions of<lb />
this movie that I can't pick one<lb />
as being the best. However, the<lb />
premise of the movie is magical.<lb />
We join Ebenezer Scrooge on<lb />
his journey to Christmas past,<lb />
present, and future and learn<lb />
that Christmas is all about the<lb />
company you keep. I love this<lb />
movie because it transforms<lb />
Scrooge's pessimism into hope<lb />
and kindheartedness.<lb />
The Nightmare Before<lb />
Chrtstmas<lb />
This is one of Tim Burton's<lb />
most popular animated movies<lb />
about how Christmastown is<lb />
taken over by the pumpkin king<lb />
from Halloweentown trouble<lb />
ensures. This movie is lighthearted<lb />
and hilarious - I recommend<lb />
this one not only for the winter<lb />
holidays, but anytime of the year.<lb />
Charlie Brown Chrtstmas<lb />
When Charlie Brown has the<lb />
holiday blues he seeks out some<lb />
professional help from none<lb />
other than his friend Lucy.<lb />
Lucy suggests he become the<lb />
director of the Christmas play.<lb />
In doing so Charlie Brown<lb />
finds out that Christmas is<lb />
more than just the commer-<lb />
cial holiday that he thought<lb />
it was, it is also a time to<lb />
spend celebrating with friends.<lb />
It's a Wonderful Life<lb />
When George Bailey (James<lb />
Stewart) falls on hard times<lb />
and believes the only way to<lb />
solve his problems is suicide he<lb />
decides to jump from a bridge<lb />
into freezing water - however<lb />
his guardian angel Clarence<lb />
(Henry Travers) saves him.<lb />
Throughout the movie Clar-<lb />
ence gives George a look at<lb />
how his life affected so many<lb />
others. This is my favorite<lb />
Christmas movie of all time<lb />
because it makes me appreciate<lb />
what my life means in perspec-<lb />
tive to others.<lb />
Each of these movies brings<lb />
to life the holiday spirit and<lb />
reminds each and everyone one<lb />
of us that the important things<lb />
in life aren't gifts, but rather<lb />
sharing memories together<lb />
with friends and family, and<lb />
believing the impossible.<lb />
If you need more movie<lb />
ideas to keep you busy, try<lb />
watching A Christmas Story,<lb />
Eight Crazy Nights or Elf. What-<lb />
ever you decide to watch, enjoy<lb />
that time alone or with those<lb />
special people in your life.<lb />

STAFF WRITER<lb />
Although I never expected<lb />
to see it so soon, December is<lb />
here and within a few short<lb />
weeks, 2005 will be but a fond<lb />
memory for most of us. This<lb />
semester, I've had the privilege<lb />
of sharing with you some of my<lb />
personal favorite films, albums,<lb />
songs and books - all I feel con-<lb />
fident in calling "masterpieces<lb />
Whether you agreed with me<lb />
or not - and most people prob-<lb />
ably didn't agree that Revenge<lb />
of the Nerds was a masterpiece<lb />
- hopefully you enjoyed reading<lb />
my selections every week.<lb />
Sorry - I kind of got off-<lb />
track there. Like I said, 2005<lb />
will be behind us soon so I<lb />
would like to do something<lb />
a little different with this<lb />
column - my last, I believe<lb />
- and that is to run down the<lb />
few actual masterpieces of 2005.<lb />
I say few because, quite frankly,<lb />
this has been a terrible year for<lb />
music and film. I've said it before<lb />
that I was really excited about<lb />
a lot of this year's CD releases<lb />
and I've really been let down<lb />
- especially by the Foo Fighters.<lb />
In Your Honor is utter garbage.<lb />
In terms of movies, there<lb />
hasn't been a single film released<lb />
this year that could have nomi-<lb />
nated for Best Picture last year<lb />
which means by default, this<lb />
year's Oscars will be terrible. I<lb />
mean, it's a sad state of affairs<lb />
when the best film I've seen<lb />
in theaters all year was The 40<lb />
Year-Old Virgin. And in terms<lb />
of books, to be honest I really<lb />
haven't had the time to read any-<lb />
thing new - this has been a very<lb />
taxing year for me personally.<lb />
So without further ado,<lb />
here's the short-but-sweet<lb />
list of 2005's masterpieces.<lb />
Downfall: Technically this<lb />
should have been on last year's<lb />
but you'll have to forgive me<lb />
- this film, which depicts the final<lb />
days of the Third Reich, wasn't<lb />
released on DVD until August.<lb />
This film mesmerized me.<lb />
Expectations were not that high from many<lb />
critics around the country for Aeon Flux, a futur-<lb />
istic film based on the 1995 MTV series of the<lb />
same name. The studio didn't even screen the<lb />
film prior to its release to avoid any potential<lb />
critical backlash that may have occurred. My<lb />
expectations were not high, but after seeing<lb />
this film it has exceeded all expectations and<lb />
has proven to be enormously entertaining.<lb />
Aeon Flux stars Charlize Theron as the hero-<lb />
ine of the film. It takes place some 400 years in<lb />
the future after a killer virus has wiped out 99<lb />
percent of the population. The remaining five<lb />
million people have been placed in a secluded<lb />
city called Bregna, the last city on Earth.<lb />
The man who cured the virus is Trevor Good-<lb />
child. His seventh generation descendent is played<lb />
by Marton Csokas and goes by the same name as<lb />
his ancestor. He is the one in control of the city.<lb />
Aeon is a Monican, a group of rebels who<lb />
attempt to fight the Goodchild government. The<lb />
government is out to get the Monicans and they<lb />
do so by killing suspected members. One day,<lb />
they kill Aeon's sister (Amelia Warner), despite<lb />
the fact that she is not a Monican. This sets up<lb />
a deadly assault on Trevor Goodchild himself.<lb />
Aeon, with the help of her partner Sithandra<lb />
(Sophie Okoneda), infiltrate the main office<lb />
complex of the Goodchild government. Here we<lb />
meet Trevor Goodchild and his power hungry<lb />
brother Oren (Johnny Lee Miller).<lb />
Soon after the infiltration, Aeon comes face<lb />
to face with Trevor but can't find it in her to<lb />

A look at what films are<lb />
in the running for the<lb />
year's biggest prizes<lb />
TREVOR KIRKENDALL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
The end of the year is finally<lb />
here and overall the movies that<lb />
have been released thus far have<lb />
made this year a good one.<lb />
This year, out of the nearly 60<lb />
films I saw, I awarded the follow-<lb />
ing films a perfect four-star (A)<lb />
review: Batman Begins, Broken<lb />
Flowers, Capote, The Constant<lb />
Gardener, Crash, Good Night, and<lb />
Good Luck, A History of Violence,<lb />
Hustle & Flow, Murderball, North<lb />
Country, Pride & Prejudice, Sin City,<lb />
Stay and Walk the Line.<lb />
There is still about a month<lb />
left of the calendar year and the<lb />
movies that usually come out in<lb />
December are the ones that will<lb />
usually win an Oscar for Best<lb />
Picture of the year. As a matter of<lb />
fact, since 1990, seven films that<lb />
have won the best picture Oscar<lb />
were released in December, four<lb />
of which came in the last four<lb />
years. The chances that we have<lb />
not yet seen this year's winner<lb />
are still pretty good. There are<lb />
many films that could be in the<lb />
running for that<lb />
award, as well as<lb />
others that have<lb />
yet to make an<lb />
official release.<lb />
Crash, the<lb />
racially driven<lb />
drama staring<lb />
Sandra Bullock,<lb />
Matt Dillon<lb />
and Don Chea-<lb />
dle, has become<lb />
a rather big hit<lb />
since its Septem-<lb />
ber release on<lb />
DVD. This film<lb />
was my choice<lb />
for best film of<lb />
the year up until<lb />
very recently. It<lb />
was, however, not all that impres-<lb />
sive at the box office due to its<lb />
limited release status. The Acad-<lb />
emy does recognize box office in<lb />
its consideration.<lb />
The same can be said about<lb />
Ron Howard's Cinderella Man.<lb />
This was another very good film<lb />
that seemed to go overlooked by<lb />
the public. If anything comes<lb />
from this, it should be a Best Sup-<lb />
porting Actor for Paul Giamatti,<lb />
who went overlooked in both<lb />
American Splen-<lb />
dor and Sideways.<lb />
The Con-<lb />
stant Gardener, a<lb />
small politically<lb />
charged thriller<lb />
staring Ralph<lb />
Flennes, was also<lb />
released during<lb />
the summer. Its<lb />
director, Fer-<lb />
nando Meirelles,<lb />
was a surprise<lb />
nomination in<lb />
2003 for his Bra-<lb />
zilian film Cify<lb />
of God. He has a<lb />
chance to pick<lb />
up nomination<lb />
number two, but<lb />
he's considered a dark horse.<lb />
Other films have been gen-<lb />
erating buzz in a limited release<lb />
status. Some have since gone<lb />
wide while others remain limited.<lb />
One of these films is A History<lb />
of Violence. This film may not<lb />
earn a Best Picture nod, but it<lb />
could possibly earn nomina-<lb />
tions for its leading stars Viggo<lb />
Mortensen and Maria Bello.<lb />
Capote, the biopic about In<lb />
Cold Blood author Truman Capote,<lb />
is the best film of the year thus<lb />
far. Philip Seymour Hoffman<lb />
will win the Oscar for Best Actor.<lb />
He has some competition, but<lb />
right now he's generating the<lb />
same buzz as Jamie Foxx did last<lb />
year for his performance in Ray,<lb />
which he eventually won. Capote<lb />
could end up being a Best Picture<lb />
nod, but look for it to defiantly<lb />
secure a nomination (and win)<lb />
for Hoffman and Best Support-<lb />
ing nods for either Clifton Col-<lb />
lins, Jr. or Catherine Keener.<lb />
George Clooney made his<lb />
debut as director with Good<lb />
Night, and Good Luck, a story<lb />
about Edward R. Murrow and<lb />
CBS's outlash at Senator Joseph<lb />
McCarthy's anti-communism<lb />
politics in the 1950s. David<lb />
Strathairn will earn a nod for<lb />
playing Murrow and Clooney<lb />
could earn a Best Director nod.<lb />
At one point, farhead looked<lb />
like it could make a run for Oscar<lb />
gold, but with mixed reviews upon<lb />
its release, its chances of snagging<lb />
see OSCAR page B2<lb /><lb />

THE EAST CAROLINIAN FEATURES<lb />
Aeon<lb />
from page B1<lb />
kill him, even though he's the<lb />
man who ordered her sister to<lb />
be killed. There is an interesting<lb />
connection here between both<lb />
Aeon and Trevor, but she doesn't<lb />
know what it is. Now, Aeon is<lb />
ordered to be hunted by her<lb />
fellow Monicans for not taking<lb />
out the target when she had the<lb />
chance.<lb />
Director Karyn Kusama, who<lb />
won Best Director and the Grand<lb />
Jury Prize at the 2000 Sundance<lb />
Film Festival for Girlfight, makes<lb />
her second appearance behind<lb />
the camera. She doesn't let the<lb />
special effects needed for this<lb />
film to tell the story. Judging<lb />
by the images on the preview, it<lb />
almost looks like this will be a<lb />
CGl-laced feature. And it is, but<lb />
she doesn't over do it. The effects,<lb />
although not first rate, are merely<lb />
for background usage only.<lb />
Aeon Flux isn't a great movie<lb />
by any means. I went into this<lb />
film with very low expectations<lb />
(like it was going to be as bad as<lb />
Rent) and was surprised to find<lb />
that this film was very enter-<lb />
taining. Running at just over 90<lb />
minutes, the film's action never<lb />
lets up and keeps the audience<lb />
engaged for the entire time.<lb />
The screenplay might not be<lb />
great. The special effects are far<lb />
from the year's best. The acting<lb />
isn't what you'd expect with two<lb />
Oscar winners (Theron and Fran-<lb />
ces McDormand in a small role)<lb />
and another nominee in the cast<lb />
(Okoneda), but it is quite enter-<lb />
taining. And sometimes, enter-<lb />
tainment is really all you need to<lb />
make a movie going experience<lb />
fun. The fans of the old TV series<lb />
should also be impressed.<lb />

The most outstanding period<lb />
piece of the year is Pride & Preju-<lb />

make a run for Best Actress for<lb />
Keira Knightley.<lb />
Knightley will have some<lb />
competition in this category with<lb />
Reese Witherspoon for her June<lb />
Carter Cash portrayal in Walk<lb />
the Line. Joaquin Phoenix should<lb />
also snag Best Actor, but the win<lb />
will probably go to Hoffman for<lb />
Capote. Walk the Line itself might<lb />
be just strong enough to snag a<lb />
Best Picture nomination too.<lb />
George Clooney appears on<lb />
the list of hopefuls once again,<lb />
this time as a Best Actor candi-<lb />
date for the politically charged<lb />
Syriana. He might be looking at<lb />
being the first person ever nomi-<lb />

Best Actor for different films in<lb />
the same year. Syriana, written<lb />
and directed by Stephen Gaghan<lb />
(Traffic) opens in wide release<lb />
this Friday.<lb />
This brings us up to Decem-<lb />
ber. Many of these films have<lb />
been screened to many critics<lb />
around the country who have<lb />
helped add to the growing buzz.<lb />
First up is Brokeback Mountain,<lb />
an unusual love story staring<lb />
Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllen-<lb />
haal as two cowboys in the 1960s<lb />
that form romantic relationships<lb />
despite being married. This film<lb />
has already generated enough<lb />
buzz to leave assumptions that<lb />
this film may not only be nomi-<lb />
nated for the top prize, but win<lb />
it too. Ledger is also favored for<lb />
a Best Actor nod.<lb />
Memoirs of a Geisha, directed<lb />
by Rob Marshall (Chicago), opens<lb />
later this month. It's a who's who<lb />
in Asian celebrities staring Zhang<lb />
Ziyi, Michelle Yeoh, Gong Li and<lb />
Ken Wantanabe.<lb />
The Producers brings the<lb />
famous Broadway musical to<lb />
the screen once again. It first<lb />
appeared as a comedy by Mel<lb />
Brooks (which won a screenplay<lb />
Oscar in 1968). Now, Nathan<lb />
Lane, Matthew Broderick, Uma<lb />
Thurman and Will Ferrell star in<lb />
the big screen musical adaptation.<lb />
The New World is a retelling<lb />
of the Jamestown story told<lb />
this time by Terrence Malick<lb />
(The Thin Red Line). Colin Far-<lb />
rell, Christopher Plummer and<lb />
Christian Bale star in this epic<lb />
film.<lb />
Match Point is Woody Allen's<lb />
first film to take place outside<lb />
New York. Set in London, it tells<lb />
the tale of love gone bad. Scarlett<lb />
Johansson stars in the film that<lb />
could finally earn her an Oscar.<lb />
This film generated in enormous<lb />
amount of buzz from the Cannes<lb />
Film Festival back in May.<lb />
Finally, Steven Spiel-<lb />
berg's Munich is the odds on<lb />
favorite to win Best Picture<lb />
and no one has even seen it.<lb />
It tells the story of four men<lb />
assigned by the Israeli govern-<lb />
ment to track down members<lb />
of a Palestinian terrorist group<lb />
who killed Israeli athletes at the<lb />

Downfall takes place primarily<lb />
in Hitler's underground bunker<lb />
as Berlin is under siege from the<lb />
Russian army. The war is all but<lb />
over - but no one, and certainly<lb />
not Hitler, will admit it. Slowly<lb />
the German dictator unravels,<lb />
losing all touch with reality as his<lb />
life's effort blows up in his face.<lb />
Bruno Ganz plays Hitler with<lb />
such ferociousness and convic-<lb />
tion that you cannot take your<lb />
eyes off of him. It's his perfor-<lb />
mance, as well as the pristine<lb />
portrayal of the time, that makes<lb />
this an absolute masterpiece.<lb />
Resident Evtt 4: I've never<lb />
included a video game in this<lb />
column, which is odd because<lb />
video games take up pretty much<lb />
the bulk of my time outside of<lb />
school work. I never liked the<lb />
Resident Evil series - basically<lb />
because it was difficult to control.<lb />
But with the Gamecube's Resident<lb />
Evil 4 they upped the graphics,<lb />
got rid of the zombies and made<lb />
it a breeze to play by turning it<lb />
into a first-person shooter.<lb />
The result is probably the<lb />
most tense, most beautiful, most<lb />
entertaining video game<lb />
ever made. The game will<lb />
get under your skin. It's<lb />
impossible to stop playing.<lb />
And most importantly, you'll<lb />
have months of nightmares to look<lb />
forward to - nightmares about<lb />
burlap sack-masked, chainsaw-<lb />
wielding rednecks. Scary stuff.<lb />
The White Stripes - Get<lb />
Behind Me Satan: Jack and<lb />
Meg White could have just<lb />
rehashed 2003's Elephant and<lb />
this album still would have<lb />
made this list. However, the<lb />
Stripes don't seem to know the<lb />
meaning of "cruise control<lb />
It's a strange album. For<lb />
a band that became famous<lb />
for loud, thrashing guitar and<lb />
pounding drums, Satan is almost<lb />
meek in comparison to their<lb />
earlier work. I mean, Jack became<lb />
a bona fide guitar god with Ele-<lb />
phant's "Ball and a Biscuit but<lb />
there's nary a solo to be found on<lb />
this entire album. Normally I'd<lb />
be angry when a band switches<lb />
gears so abruptly, but you can't<lb />
argue with results. Jack's lyrics<lb />
are sharper than ever and his old<lb />
school, 1950s rock 'n' roll piano<lb />
work is overwhelming. Subdued,<lb />
unconventional, amazing -1 love<lb />

Holland on the future of ECU Athletics<lb />
12-8-05<lb />
An in-depth Q&A with<lb />
the Pirates' head honcho<lb />
ERICGILMORE<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
The East Carolinian's Eric<lb />
Gilmore was able to track down<lb />
ECU'S Athletic Director Terry<lb />
Holland for an Interview per-<lb />
taining to Holland's time at<lb />
the university thus far. Holland<lb />
has revamped ECU Athletics<lb />
in the past year-plus, bringing<lb />
in new coaching staffs for the<lb />
football, basketball and baseball<lb />
programs.<lb />
Eric Gilmore: Skip Holtz<lb />
just began the second year of his<lb />
five-year contract. With media<lb />
appearances, his guaranteed<lb />
salary this year was approxi-<lb />
mately $390,000. Comparatively,<lb />
Al Groh, the coach whom you<lb />
hired at Virginia now has a guar-<lb />
anteed salary of $1.7 million.<lb />
After going 5-6 this year, is there<lb />
a possibility of increasing Holtz's<lb />
pay or extending his contract?<lb />
Terry Holland: Coach Holt<lb />
and his staff have done a marvel-<lb />
ous (ob of restoring the pirate<lb />
pride and spirit and we hope to<lb />
keep them all under contract for<lb />
as long as possible.<lb />
EG: According to Holtz, his<lb />
team and this program are "still a<lb />
work in progress but the media<lb />
and fans seemed to label the<lb />
200S season a success. Judging<lb />
from your vantage point, was this<lb />
season successful?<lb />
TH: More important than<lb />
the won-loss record or the result<lb />
of any particular game is the fact<lb />
that this staff and team members<lb />
built a "foundation" that can sup-<lb />
port a championship program.<lb />
EG: With the increase in<lb />
overall scheduling for 2006,<lb />
what indicators will make next<lb />
year successful? What are your<lb />
expectations?<lb />
1H The only goal is to put<lb />
a team on the field that has an<lb />
equal chance to win against any<lb />
competition on any given Satur-<lb />
day. As long as we are progressing<lb />
toward that goal, the won-loss<lb />
record or individual game results<lb />
will eventually take care of them-<lb />
selves.<lb />
EG: The SGA senate recently<lb />
voted to support the athletic<lb />
department's $50 increase in<lb />
student fees. The $436 fee pumps<lb />
over $10 million directly into<lb />
the athletic budget. Is it fair for<lb />
students to fund approximately<lb />
half of the athletic budget?<lb />
TH: The ECU student fees<lb />
are comparable to those at other<lb />
institutions. So, I guess the cor-<lb />
rect way to look at it is that the<lb />
students are doing their part - is<lb />
everyone else doing their part?<lb />
EG: In recent interviews,<lb />
you've mentioned expanding<lb />
Dowdy-Ficklen stadium. You've<lb />
spoken of a six-story building<lb />
that would encompass football<lb />
offices and more luxury suites.<lb />
How much would this structure<lb />
cost and when do you expect it<lb />
to be completed?<lb />
TH: 1 have clearly said that<lb />
is my vision but that it is the<lb />
vision of someone who does<lb />
not know what they are talking<lb />
about. The circle of excellence<lb />
campaign include; funding for<lb />
hiring someone who can tell us<lb />
what can be done and how much<lb />
it will likely cost.<lb />
EG: Your expertise is<lb />
undoubtedly in basketball. You've<lb />
experienced 418 wins in 21 years<lb />
at both Davidson and Virginia.<lb />
While you've enjoyed success,<lb />
ECU never really has. How much<lb />
tougher is building the basketball<lb />
program compared to football<lb />
and baseball?<lb />
TH: It is harder simply<lb />
because it has never been done<lb />
so there is no tradition to point to<lb />
that helps people believe we can<lb />
do it. So we have hired coaches<lb />
who have been part of building<lb />
championship programs to pro-<lb />
vide that credibility - but they<lb />
cannot do it without a lot of help<lb />
from all pirate fans.<lb />
EG: Ricky Stokes and his<lb />
team have stated their goal is to<lb />
have a winning season. Similar<lb />
to the football question, what are<lb />
your expectations for the basket-<lb />
ball program - both this season<lb />
and beyond?<lb />
TH: Again, building a solid<lb />
foundation for success on and<lb />
off the field and court is the first<lb />
step and continuing toward that<lb />
goal is the next step.<lb />
EG: Billy Godwin was first<lb />
named "interim head baseball<lb />
coach" upon randy Mazey's<lb />
suspension. At that time, you<lb />
stated that there would be a<lb />
national search at the conclu-<lb />
sion of the upcoming season.<lb />
Instead, Godwin was named head<lb />
coach on Nov. 2. Why the<lb />
change?<lb />
TH: We felt that Billy Godwin<lb />
was the person we wanted to lead<lb />
our program and that waiting<lb />
until the end of the season would<lb />
be unfair to this year's team as<lb />
well as this year's recruiting class.<lb />
If we could have "Interviewed"<lb />
coach Godwin earlier, we would<lb />
have been able to make a simul-<lb />
taneous announcement. But,<lb />
of course, it was impossible to<lb />
interview anyone until the deci-<lb />
sion on coach Mazey had been j<lb />
made. '<lb />
EG: At Virginia, your athletic<lb />
program was in contention for<lb />
the sears cup yearly. Most of<lb />
ECU'S Olympic and non-revenue<lb />
sports need significant upgrades.<lb />
What has to be done to improve<lb />
programs such as golf, tennis and<lb />
cross-country?<lb />
TH: I always believe that<lb />
facilities are the most important<lb />
investment an athletic program<lb />
can make since those facilities<lb />
will serve generations of athletes<lb />
The ECU football program compiled five wins in Holland's first year as Athletic Director.<lb />
and coaches. The second level<lb />
of investment would be to hire<lb />
outstanding coaches, and the<lb />
third level would be scholarship<lb />
support to the maximum allowed<lb />
by the NCAA.<lb />
EG: Why was the decision<lb />
made on Tuesday to discontinue<lb />
the men's soccer program?<lb />
TH: It was initiated by the<lb />
need to hire a new coach - I<lb />
found that I could not ask a coach<lb />
to take the position until ECU is<lb />
capable of providing the men's<lb />
soccer team with the support<lb />
necessary to have a fair chance<lb />
against our conference oppo-<lb />
nents. The record over 23 years<lb />
in the CAA and Conference USA<lb />
of 17-151-5 means that we have<lb />
averaged less than one conference<lb />
win per year for over two decades.<lb />
That is a clear indication that we<lb />
have not provided the necessary<lb />
support in the past and we are not<lb />
currently positioned to provide<lb />
such support.<lb />
EG: Do you think ECU will<lb />
add one of the following varsity<lb />
sports within the next decade:<lb />
lacrosse, hockey, wrestling, crew<lb />
or rugby?<lb />
TH: Since ECU has 19 sports<lb />
(after the loss of men's soccer)<lb />
that means we support more<lb />

Steroids issue raged in 2005<lb />
Congress plays large role<lb />
in the controversy<lb />
RON CLEMENTS<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
With the recent death of pro-<lb />
fessional wrestler Eddie Guerrero,<lb />
the World Wrestling Entertain-<lb />
ment announced this week that<lb />
it will begin random drug test-<lb />
ing for its athletes - something<lb />
long overdue in pro wrestling.<lb />
Guerrero's death put the cap on<lb />
a 2005 year, which was plagued<lb />
by the issue of steroids in profes-<lb />
sional sports.<lb />
It's been just over since the<lb />
death of former baseball player<lb />
and drug abuser Ken Caminiti,<lb />
and his death and admitted drug<lb />
abuse along with Jose Canseco's<lb />
book citing rampant steroid use<lb />
in baseball was held over the col-<lb />
lective heads of baseball's brass<lb />
entering 2005.<lb />
In March, Congress decided<lb />
to step in calling onto the carpet<lb />
many of the players named in<lb />
Canseco's book and some of<lb />
baseball's top management,<lb />
including Players' Association<lb />
President Donald Fehr and Major<lb />
League Baseball commissioner<lb />
Bud Selig. Not much was accom-<lb />
plished from the hearing, aside<lb />
from Selig vowing for stiffer<lb />
penalties for violations of MLB's<lb />
new drug policy. The one real<lb />
highlight was 20-year veteran<lb />
Rafael Palmeiro, one of the play-<lb />
ers cited in Canseco's book as a<lb />

Bush has been arguably the most explosive offensive player in college football this season.<lb />
Heisman profile: Reggie Bush<lb />

Victor Conte, of BALCO, is one of the main pieces ot the puzzle In baseball's steroid explosion.<lb />
 )<lb />
(AP) Reggie Bush raced<lb />
around left end, easily leaving<lb />
most Fresno State defenders in<lb />
the dust, though a few had angles<lb />
on him.<lb />
Some 30 yards downfield,<lb />
the Southern California star was<lb />
hemmed in near the sideline<lb />
- so he stopped. With would-be<lb />
tacklers whizzing by him, Bush<lb />
changed direction, cruised all<lb />
the way across the field and into<lb />
the end zone.<lb />
The 90,000-plus fans packed<lb />
into the Los Angeles Coliseum went<lb />
wild. And with that you-had-to-<lb />
see-it-to-believc-it 50-yard touch-<lb />
down, the competition for the<lb />
I leisman Trophy might have ended.<lb />
A rare combination of speed,<lb />
power and shiftiness, the 6-foot,<lb />
200-pound Bush had the game of<lb />
a lifetime that November night,<lb />
 rushing for 294 yards on 23 car-<lb />
ries and setting a Pac-10 record<lb />
with 513 all-purpose yards as<lb />
No. 1 USC outlasted Fresno State<lb />
50-42.<lb />
USC coach Pete Carroll said<lb />
a, he hadn't seen a performance like<lb />
that in 40 years.<lb />
"The game I remember was<lb />
when Gale Sayers played against<lb />
the 49ers (in 1965), he scored six<lb />
touchdowns Carroll said. "That<lb />
was way back when.<lb />
"I've always thought that was<lb />
the kind of guy Reggie is like<lb />
Ot hers have said the samething.<lb />
"It's a great honor to be com-<lb />
pared to somebody like that<lb />
Bush said of Sayers, the former<lb />
Kansas and Chicago Bears star.<lb />
"I've evolved into my own person<lb />
and running style. I've been<lb />
playing this game since I was 8<lb />
years old<lb />
The 20-year-old Bush, a<lb />
junior from the San Diego area,<lb />
completed the regular season<lb />
last weekend with another show-<lb />
stopping performance, gaining<lb />
260 yards on 24 carries in a 66-19<lb />
triumph over UCLA.<lb />
The Heisman will be awarded<lb />
Saturday night in New York. It<lb />
was no coincidence Bush wore a<lb />
Yankees baseball hat last Sunday,<lb />
when it was formally announced<lb />
the Trojans would play No. 2<lb />
Texas for a third consecutive<lb />
national championship Jan. 4 in<lb />
the Rose Bowl.<lb />
"I plan on going to New York,<lb />
so I'm preparing myself he said<lb />
with a smile.<lb />
Bush was a finalist last Decem-<lb />
ber, when teammate Matt Leinart<lb />
won the award. It appears the<lb />
roles will be reversed this year.<lb />
"What would it mean? It<lb />
would be everything Bush said.<lb />
"I'd be lying if I said I didn't want<lb />
to win it<lb />
"Over the summer, I wanted<lb />
to focus on being a complete<lb />
running back, working on pass<lb />
blocking, running between the<lb />
tackles he said. "I really wanted<lb />
to become a complete running<lb />
back this year, and I think I have<lb />
Bush rushed for 537 yards as<lb />
a freshman and 908 as a sopho-<lb />
more. He gained 1,658 yards<lb />
on 197 carries in 12 games this<lb />
season, and his 8.9-yard average<lb />
per carry is tops in the country.<lb />
His 138.2-yard average per game<lb />
ranks fourth.<lb />

sports than other C-USA schools<lb />
and more than many of our com-<lb />

with much larger budgets. Unless<lb />

I don't know, I believe that until<lb />
ECU's athletic budget is compa-<lb />
rable to those schools with 20<lb />
or more sports playing division<lb />
1A football, ECU will not add<lb />
a sport.<lb />
EG: What are the advantages<lb />
and disadvantages of competing<lb />
in C-USA?<lb />
TH: The disadvantage is the<lb />
distance from our conference<lb />
opponents requiring our teams<lb />
to do a better job of non-confer-<lb />
ence scheduling to create and<lb />
keep local rivalries (as we have<lb />
done in football recently). The<lb />
advantage of C-USA is that we get<lb />
to play in major media markets<lb />
throughout the southeast and<lb />
into the southwest - Orlando,<lb />
Birmingham, Memphis, New<lb />
Orleans, Tulsa, Dallas and Hous-<lb />

EG: Ever since you arrived,<lb />
it's seemed that ECU's goal<lb />
has been to position itself for<lb />
a potential move into another<lb />
athletic conference. What makes<lb />
ECU a lucrative program when<lb />
the next round of realignment<lb />
occurs?<lb />
TH: We are not positioning<lb />
for another conference except<lb />
to protect ourselves if and when<lb />
another re-alignment occurs.<lb />
As we found out the hard way,<lb />
C-USA is a major source for other<lb />
conferences to raid.<lb />
EG: You instilled a rigor-<lb />
ous class attendance policy for<lb />
student-athletes causing them<lb />
to lose their scholarship if they<lb />
miss three or more classes. How<lb />
has the policy been received and<lb />
is it enforceable?<lb />
TH: It has been well received<lb />
but enforcement is totally depen-<lb />
dent on the willingness of pro-<lb />
fessors to provide the athletic<lb />
department with attendance<lb />
information. About 60 percent<lb />
of the professors respond to our<lb />

we are slowly increasing that<lb />

Helix High School in Spring Valley.<lb />
"He's probably the fastest guy<lb />
who's ever played at a running<lb />
back position said Garrett, now<lb />
the USC athletic director. "Gale<lb />
Sayeis was very fast. O.J. was<lb />
very fast. This kid (LaDainian)<lb />
Tomlinson in San Diego is very<lb />
fast. I think Reggie's faster than<lb />
all of them.<lb />
LaMar Griffin, Bush's stepfa-<lb />
ther, said in a televised interview<lb />
during the UCLA-USC game that<lb />
he believed Bush would pass up<lb />
his final year of eligibility to play<lb />
in the NFL next season.<lb />
Bush insists he hasn't made<lb />
a decision.<lb />
"I really hope he does the<lb />
right thing for himself Garrett<lb />
said. "Last year, I think it was the<lb />
right thing for Matt<lb />
Leinart passed up an oppor-<lb />
tunity to become an instant<lb />
millionaire last January when he<lb />
decided to return to USC for his<lb />
senior year.<lb />
"Reggie could be a different<lb />
case Garrett said, an obvious<lb />
reference to the hitting all run-<lb />
ning backs take, making their<lb />
professional careers far shorter<lb />
on average than quarterbacks.<lb />
"I think he's a reasonable<lb />
person who will make a reason-<lb />
able decision Garrett said. "I<lb />
just want him to do the right<lb />
thing for himself. If he stays, that<lb />
would be great for us. If he goes,<lb />
it would be great for him<lb />
It would likely also be great<lb />
for the NFL team that selects<lb />
Bush, who's expected to be one<lb />
of the top selections, if not No.<lb />
1, in the draft next April should<lb />
he decide to come out.<lb />
"I'll think about it after the<lb />
season he said.<lb />
USCis37-l sinceBush enrolled.<lb />
Bush said whenever he does<lb />
go pro - this year or next year -<lb />
he'll just be happy to be there.<lb />
"For me he said, "just to get<lb />
a chance to make my mark in the<lb />
NFL is a dream<lb />
SterOid from page B4<lb />
steroid user, shaking his finger at<lb />
congressmen while denying ever<lb />
using performance enhancers.<lb />
Three other stars thought to<lb />
have used steroids, Sammy Sosa,<lb />
Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds,<lb />
did not say much at the hearing.<lb />
Sosa just denied use - McGwire<lb />
refused to answer questions on<lb />
the issue, casting doubt on his<lb />
integrity as a ball player - and<lb />
Bonds was not subpoenaed to<lb />
attend the hearing.<lb />
In September, Palmeiro was<lb />
suspended by Major League<lb />
Baseball because the Baltimore<lb />
Orioles slugger and member of<lb />
the 500-homer and 3,000-hit<lb />
club popped positive for steroids.<lb />
MLB's new drug policy was vindi-<lb />
cated and Palmeiro received the<lb />
proverbial black eye and prob-<lb />
ably saw his induction into the<lb />
Hall of Fame slip away. Nine MLB<lb />
players were suspended during<lb />
the 2005 season for steroid use.<lb />
Baseball was not alone in<lb />
its steroid issues. The NFL also<lb />
had a steroid hangover of sorts<lb />
from the 2004 season. While<lb />
the congressional hearings were<lb />
taking place in Washington, a<lb />
story broke from Charlotte that<lb />
accused three Carolina Panthers<lb />
players of shooting up during<lb />
Carolina's 2003 Super Bowl<lb />
season, and just days before their<lb />
appearance in the Super Bowl in<lb />
January 2004.<lb />
The investigation into the<lb />
alleged Carolina drug use is<lb />
ongoing. Just last week, the<lb />
doctor who allegedly gave the<lb />
Panthers' players the steroids tes-<lb />
tified that he "advised the players<lb />
how to take the drugs without<lb />
failing league tests<lb />
While the issue of steroids<lb />
continues to loom over profes-<lb />
sional sports heading into a new<lb />
year, the brass in all of the major<lb />
sports leagues continue to strug-<lb />
gle with the players' unions to<lb />
work out a settlement agreeable<lb />
to everyone. Progress has been<lb />
made and is still being made on<lb />
the subject of steroids because<lb />
the issues of 2005 are something<lb />
the NFL, MLB or any other league<lb />
wants to deal with in 2006.<lb />
