Constant monitoring,<lb/>
feedback keeps<lb/>
professors on track<lb/>
SCOTT EATON<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
The complex and time-con-<lb/>
suming tenure system at ECU<lb/>
is designed to procure the most<lb/>
qualified professors to advance<lb/>
the university nationally and<lb/>
provide the best possible educa-<lb/>
tion for students.<lb/>
The procedures for to evalu-<lb/>
ate the professional competence<lb/>
of a professor have become more<lb/>
complex through the years and<lb/>
take up a large amount of time.<lb/>
Universities use the tenure system<lb/>
to recruit and retain qualified<lb/>
professors.<lb/>
"Twenty years ago we hired<lb/>
professors to teach but now we<lb/>
expect them to perform research<lb/>
and be involved in a multi-<lb/>
tude of other responsibilities,<lb/>
as well as retain the ability to<lb/>
be a good teacher said Richard<lb/>
Kearney, Department of Political<lb/>
Science Chair.<lb/>
"We look to hire faculty who<lb/>
will be tenurable at this univer-<lb/>
sity and the process is complex<lb/>
because our requirements are<lb/>
so high<lb/>
This tenure track system<lb/>
requires performance reviews<lb/>
and constant monitoring by<lb/>
department chairs and a depart-<lb/>
ments personnel committee.<lb/>
The committee consists of a<lb/>
department's tenured professors<lb/>
and is necessary to make deci-<lb/>
sions about a professor's career.<lb/>
This system leads to a professor<lb/>
becoming tenured and a perma-<lb/>
nent member of the faculty.<lb/>
"There is a post-tenure review<lb/>
that can provide a continuance or<lb/>
warnings for improvement and<lb/>
this provides protection against<lb/>
undesirable behavior of tenured<lb/>
professors Kearney said.<lb/>
"Professors are given security<lb/>
by this system. However, any<lb/>
felonious behavior or harassment<lb/>
will result in dismissal<lb/>
According to the Faculty<lb/>
Manual, there are three types of<lb/>
faculty appointments.<lb/>
Fixed term appointments are<lb/>
given to faculty who are consid-<lb/>
ered visiting professors, lecturers,<lb/>
visiting associate professor or<lb/>
clinical professors and are can<lb/>
be extended either year to year or<lb/>
each semester. These professors<lb/>
are not evaluated or considered<lb/>
within the tenure track system.<lb/>
Probationary appointments<lb/>
or reappointments are given to<lb/>
members in the tenure track<lb/>
system and are assistant profes-<lb/>
sors during this period.<lb/>
Appointments with per-<lb/>
manent tenure are given after<lb/>
seven years and are continuous<lb/>
until retirement, resignation or<lb/>
removal. Faculty members are<lb/>
associate or full professors after<lb/>
tenure is granted.<lb/>
"We evaluate our faculty<lb/>
members in the tenure track<lb/>
system after an initial three year<lb/>
contract and decide whether<lb/>
to issue an extension and then<lb/>
we repeat the process every two<lb/>
years until the seven-year mark<lb/>
when they will be considered for<lb/>
tenure Kearney said.<lb/>
"The personnel committee<lb/>
will make a recommendation for<lb/>
tenure, the department will give<lb/>
concurrence or non-concurrence,<lb/>
the recommendation then moves<lb/>
to the dean of the college and<lb/>
then the provost and trustees<lb/>
have the final say on the recom-<lb/>

Parking lots have to be handled carefully by officials at colleges, amusement parks and other venues.<lb/>
Why ECU has parking regulations<lb/>
Checking the reasons<lb/>
behind the rules of<lb/>
campus parking<lb/>
CHRIS MUNIER<lb/>
NEWS EDITOR<lb/>
All parking rules and cita-<lb/>
tions a student or faculty member<lb/>
will encounter are regulated by<lb/>
ECU Parking and Transportation<lb/>
Services, an organization look-<lb/>
ing to improve communications<lb/>
with students by disclosing all<lb/>
information about the parking<lb/>
situation many people dread.<lb/>
As hopeless as students think<lb/>
parking is, there are methods to<lb/>
handle the situation better. Mike<lb/>
Van Derven, director of Parking<lb/>
and Transportation Services,<lb/>
dispelled the myth that park-<lb/>
ing officials are looking to earn<lb/>
money by gouging students.<lb/>
"I have no benefit in giving<lb/>
tickets said Van Derven.<lb/>
"We're not about revenue<lb/>
generation<lb/>
He said money collected by<lb/>
issuing tickets and towing fees<lb/>
is primarily dispersed to public<lb/>
schools. All fines have to be<lb/>
approved by the Board of Gover-<lb/>
nors and the state.<lb/>
ECU Parking wants students<lb/>
to pay more attention to the dif-<lb/>
ferent things you can do with a<lb/>
permit. Van Derven said certain<lb/>
passes work at different lots<lb/>
during different points in the day.<lb/>
Once it gets late in the day, C lot<lb/>
passes can be used in other loca-<lb/>
tions. He said people have a hard<lb/>
time reading signs and get tick-<lb/>
eted for things that are avoidable.<lb/>
People often argue for ECU to<lb/>
build a parking deck on campus.<lb/>
However, it is very problematic to<lb/>
try this because of expenditures.<lb/>
"You have to look at the basic<lb/>
financing of that structure Van<lb/>
Derven said.<lb/>
A parking deck is one the<lb/>
most frequently asked questions<lb/>
ECU Parking has to answer.<lb/>
"Since no state funding is<lb/>
available or allowed for building<lb/>
a parking deck, the burden of<lb/>
such a high cost would be put on<lb/>
the students, staff and faculty<lb/>
according to the FAQ's on ECU<lb/>
Parking's Web site.<lb/>
"Basic parking deck construc-<lb/>
tion costs would be in the $7<lb/>
million range<lb/>
Furthermore, it is much easier<lb/>
for a school like Duke University to<lb/>
build a parking deck. They just spent<lb/>
about $62 million to build one.<lb/>
Parking can also be a dilemma<lb/>
when there are large events hosted<lb/>
on campus or during the beginning<lb/>
and end of semesters at the dorms.<lb/>
Most individual fines are<lb/>
not hefty, but they tend to pile<lb/>
up when multiple or repeated<lb/>
infractions occur. There are also<lb/>
some violations that can result<lb/>
in having a car towed. Such<lb/>
violations would include using a<lb/>
revoked permit or parking a vehi-<lb/>
cle in a space that impedes traffic.<lb/>
There are cases where people<lb/>
cannot find a parking spot and<lb/>
resort to parking at the end of<lb/>
lot in places not designated as<lb/>
parking spaces. People also park<lb/>

People nationwide prefer Firefox<lb/>
web browser over Internet Explorer<lb/>
Security measures, extra<lb/>
options are popular<lb/>
among users<lb/>

Mozilla Firefox is literally<lb/>
catching fire with Internet users<lb/>
and college students around<lb/>
campus.<lb/>
Mqpy people are already<lb/>
switching to Firefox because<lb/>
it has several added features<lb/>
including extra virus protection,<lb/>
customized options and multiple<lb/>
browser tabs.<lb/>
A big advantage of Firefox<lb/>
is its multiple browser option,<lb/>
enabling users to open several<lb/>
Web sites all within the same<lb/>
browser window. Users may click<lb/>
the tabs to get back and forth<lb/>
from each page whereas in Inter-<lb/>
net Explorer multiple windows<lb/>
have to be opened.<lb/>
Kari Chase, manager of the<lb/>
ECU web browser at Information<lb/>
Technology Computing Services<lb/>
said she likes Firefox because the<lb/>
Google search engine is built<lb/>
directly into the browser.<lb/>
In Internet Explorer, the<lb/>
Google toolbar is built in sepa-<lb/>
rately. Firefox users are restricted<lb/>
to just Google. Different search<lb/>
engines are available including<lb/>
Yahoo, Ask Jeeves and Wikipe-<lb/>
dia.<lb/>
Based on users' interests,<lb/>
the toolbar features a variety of<lb/>
extensions, some ranging from<lb/>
web blogging and entertainment<lb/>
to web developer tools and pri-<lb/>
More and more students are electing to use alternative browsers.<lb/>
vacy and security.<lb/>
Different themes for style and<lb/>
appearance of the web browser<lb/>
are also available.<lb/>
"The theme is actually<lb/>
how the buttons look on the<lb/>
browser said Chase.<lb/>
"I have about five or six differ-<lb/>
ent themes on my computer<lb/>
The RSS feed is another added<lb/>
feature that sets Firefox apart<lb/>
from Internet Explorer. The feed<lb/>
shows updated articles from<lb/>
every Web site the user places in<lb/>
the bookmark list.<lb/>
"I have my Web sites book-<lb/>
marked, so that everyday when<lb/>
there's a new article out there, it<lb/>
shows up in my bookmark list<lb/>
Chase said.<lb/>
"I don't have to go to that<lb/>
sight to see if there's anything<lb/>
new<lb/>
Along with several Internet<lb/>
options and extensions, Firefox<lb/>
is also considered to have better<lb/>
security and virus protection<lb/>
than Internet Explorer.<lb/>
Chase said she can perma-<lb/>
nently turn off pop-up windows,<lb/>
but if she does so in Internet<lb/>
Explorer, they still find a way to<lb/>
reappear.<lb/>
"By default Firefox catches<lb/>
them a lot faster Chase said.<lb/>
When users are download-<lb/>
ing information from Web sites,<lb/>
Firefox will also warn them if a<lb/>
Web site is secure by displaying a<lb/>
"lock" symbol in the URL.<lb/>
Chase also recommends<lb/>
Firefox to students living off<lb/>
campus because they are more<lb/>
susceptible to viruses than stu-<lb/>
dents living on campus who are<lb/>
protected by Cisco Clean Access<lb/>
Agent.<lb/>
"You can keep your virus pro-<lb/>
tections more up-to-date with<lb/>
Firefox Chase said.<lb/>

Teen scoots 11-year-old sister to<lb/>
death in Greensboro<lb/>
GREENSBORO, NC (AP) - An 11-<lb/>
year-old girl was shot to death by her<lb/>
teenage brother In their home, police<lb/>
said. The circumstances were still<lb/>
under investigation.<lb/>
Raanika Denette Seagroves and her<lb/>
brother were apparently downstairs in<lb/>
their apartment when the brother, whom<lb/>
police declined to identify, picked up a<lb/>
410-gauge shotgun and it went off.<lb/>
"It may be a week or so before we<lb/>
know for sure if there will be any<lb/>
charges filed police Capt. Gary<lb/>
Hastings said. "We don't have any<lb/>
evidence of any kind of altercation<lb/>
that we know of so far<lb/>
Police said four people were in tjpe<lb/>
apartment at the time of the shooting:<lb/>
the girl, her older brother, her father<lb/>
and another, unidentified person. The<lb/>
father was upstairs at the time.<lb/>
No charges were immediately filed.<lb/>
Possibilities range from manslaughter<lb/>
to murder, depending on whether<lb/>
investigators believe the shooting<lb/>
was an accident or deliberate. In other<lb/>
shootings involving minors, adults in<lb/>
the home have been charged with<lb/>
leaving a gun within reach.<lb/>
ASU to study nutrient's kick to<lb/>
sustain tired troops<lb/>
BOONE. NC (AP) - The largest<lb/>
research awaid in Appalachian State<lb/>
University's history will be used to<lb/>
examine whether a substance found<lb/>
in red grapes and red onions can help<lb/>
troops deprived of sleep or food.<lb/>
Researchers were awarded $1.1<lb/>
million by the Pentagon's Defense<lb/>
Advanced Research Projects Agency,<lb/>
or DARPA, for a two-year study of the<lb/>
effects of quercetin In helping maintain<lb/>
the immune systems of troops under<lb/>
intense stress, the school said Monday.<lb/>
Quercetin (pronounced CUREsee-<lb/>
tin) is a nutrient found in red grapes,<lb/>
red onions and other fruits and<lb/>
vegetables. The average American<lb/>
ingests about 25 milligrams of the<lb/>
substance a day in a normal diet,<lb/>
said David Nieman, a professor in<lb/>
the university's Department of Health,<lb/>
Leisure and Exercise Science.<lb/>
The federal grant will examine<lb/>
whether the plant pigment can<lb/>
help U.S. soldiers on long missions<lb/>
without sleep or food, Nieman said.<lb/>
If the substance helps boost immune<lb/>
system function, it could end up in<lb/>
military combat rations, he said.<lb/>
The study will examine immune system<lb/>
cells of endurance athletes, starting<lb/>
with a group that includes bicycle<lb/>
racers from western North Carolina.<lb/>
The study's second phase will take<lb/>
place next summer at a 100-mile trail<lb/>
run that starts in Squaw Valley, Calif.<lb/>

Astronomers discover possible<lb/>
miniature solar system<lb/>
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Astronomers<lb/>
have discovered what they believe<lb/>
is the birth of the smallest known<lb/>
solar system.<lb/>
Peering through ground- and space-<lb/>
based telescopes, scientists observed<lb/>
a brown dwarf or failed star lesss than<lb/>
one hundredth the mass of the sun<lb/>
surrounded by what appears to be a<lb/>
disk of dust and gas.<lb/>
The brown dwarf located 500 light<lb/>
years away in the constellation<lb/>
Chamaeleon appears to be<lb/>
undergoing a planet-forming<lb/>
process that could one day yield a<lb/>
solar system, said Kevin Luhman of<lb/>
Pennsylvania State University, who<lb/>
led the discovery.<lb/>
It's long been believed that our own<lb/>
solar system came into existence<lb/>
when a huge cloud of gas and dust<lb/>
collapsed to form the sun and planets<lb/>
about 4.5 billion years ago.<lb/>
The new finding is the smallest brown<lb/>
dwarf to be discovered with planet-<lb/>
forming properties. If the disk forms<lb/>
planets, the resulting solar system will<lb/>
be about 100 times smaller than our<lb/>
own, scientists said.<lb/>
Brown dwarfs, which are bigger than a<lb/>
planet but much smaller than a star, are<lb/>
thought to be balls of gas that failed to<lb/>
collect enough mass to start shining.<lb/>
Top U.S. military officer contradicts<lb/>
his civilian boss: Americans must<lb/>
stop Iraqi abusers<lb/>
WASHINGTON (AP) - The nation's top<lb/>
military man, Marine Gen. Peter Pace,<lb/>
said American troops in Iraq have a<lb/>
duty to intercede and stop abuse of<lb/>
prisoners by Iraqi security personnel.<lb/>
When Defense Secretary Donald<lb/>
H. Rumsfeld contradicted Pace, the<lb/>
general stood firm.<lb/>
Rumsfeld told the general he believed<lb/>
Pace meant to say the U.S. soldiers<lb/>
had to report the abuse, not stop it.<lb/>
Pace stuck to his original statement.<lb/>
"If they are physically present when<lb/>
inhumane treatment is taking place,<lb/>
sir, they have an obligation to try to<lb/>
stop It Pace told his civilian boss.<lb/>
The unusual exchange occurred<lb/>
during a discussion at a news<lb/>
conference about the relationship<lb/>
between U.S. forces in Iraq and<lb/>
an Iraqi government considered<lb/>
sovereign by the United States.<lb/>
A questioner asked whether the<lb/>
United States and its allies might be<lb/>
deemed responsible for preventing<lb/>
mistreatment of people under arrest<lb/>
in Iraq, given that the U.S. and its allies<lb/>
' train Iraqi forces.<lb/>
He said soldiers who hear of but don't see<lb/>
an incident should deal with it through<lb/>
superiors of the offending Iraqis.<lb/>
That's when Rumsfeld stepped to the<lb/>
microphone and said, "I don't think<lb/>
you mean they have an obligation to<lb/>
physically stop it. It's to report it<lb/>
Pace then repeated to Rumsfeld that<lb/>
intervening when witnessing abuse is<lb/>
the order the troops must follow, not<lb/>
just reporting it.<lb/>

Eight reported dead, 700<lb/>
hospitalized In Pakistani quake<lb/>
zone as cold descends<lb/>
MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan (AP)<lb/>
- More than 700 people - many<lb/>
suffering from pneumonia and<lb/>
hypothermia - were treated at<lb/>
hospitals Wednesday as winter<lb/>
descends on Pakistani Kashmir and<lb/>
the millions who lost their homes in<lb/>
last month's earthquake.<lb/>
Media reports said eight people have<lb/>
died in northwestern Pakistan and<lb/>
Kashmir due to the bad weather, and<lb/>
doctors said the situation could worsen<lb/>
in the coming weeks if arrangements<lb/>
are not quickly made to provide<lb/>
winterized shelters to quake survivors.<lb/>
Rain and snow began lashing<lb/>
Pakistan's part of Kashmir late<lb/>
Saturday, blocking several roads and<lb/>
grounding helicopters used to ferry<lb/>
aid to remote areas. Since the quake<lb/>
struck on Oct. 8, killing more than<lb/>
87,000 people, aid agencies have been<lb/>
warning of another disaster among<lb/>
the survivors, who have been living<lb/>
in tents in the Himalayan highlands.<lb/>
The U.N. Office for the Coordination<lb/>
of Humanitarian Affairs in Pakistan<lb/>
has said the onset of winter<lb/>
conditions is severely hampering<lb/>
relief operations.<lb/>
Donors have pledged more than $6<lb/>
billion, but much of it is meant for<lb/>
reconstruction. MacLoed said less<lb/>
than half of the $550 million appeal<lb/>
for relief funds has been received.<lb/>
Tony Blair says Britain<lb/>
considering new generation of<lb/>
nuclear power stations<lb/>
LONDON (AP) - Prime Minister Tony<lb/>
Blair opened a fierce debate on<lb/>
energy and the environment Tuesday,<lb/>
saying the British government will<lb/>
consider building a new generation<lb/>
of nuclear power plants.<lb/>
In a speech briefly delayed by anti-<lb/>
nuclear activists, Blair said an energy<lb/>
study due to be finished next summer<lb/>
would look specifically at nuclear power.<lb/>
He acknowledged that reconsideration<lb/>
of a longstanding move away<lb/>
from the use of atomic reactors to<lb/>
generate electricity is a "difficult and<lb/>
challenging" issue.<lb/>
Many Europeans have strongly<lb/>
opposed nuclear power plants since<lb/>
the 1986 Chernobyl reactor disaster<lb/>
increased fears about its safety, but<lb/>
Britain is not alone in beginning to<lb/>
rethink that aversion.<lb/>
Opponents, including many in Blair's<lb/>
governing Labour Party, worry about<lb/>
accidents or terrorist attacks at<lb/>
nuclear plants and the need to<lb/>
dispose of radioactive waste safely.<lb/>
Advocates say nuclear power, which<lb/>
does not generate greenhouse gases<lb/>
that contribute to global warming, is<lb/>
environmentally beneficial. They also<lb/>
believe it will become increasingly<lb/>
necessary as world oil supplies tighten.<lb/>
For Britain, the problem is getting<lb/>
worse as oil and natural gas<lb/>
production in its own North Sea<lb/>
fields declines. Blair said that by<lb/>
2020, coal and nuclear plants that<lb/>
now generate more than 30 percent<lb/>
of the country's electricity supply will<lb/>
be decommissioned.<lb/>
A government policy paper on energy<lb/>
resources will be issued early In the<lb/>
summer of 2006 and will address<lb/>
the possibility of a new generation<lb/>
of nuclear reactors that could help<lb/>
provide enough energy for Britain,<lb/>
Blair said.<lb/>
Nuclear power now provides a fifth of<lb/>
Britain's electricity, but the country's<lb/>
12 nuclear power plants are aging<lb/>
and unless replaced will provide only<lb/>
four percent of electricity by 2010.<lb/>
Basnlght recommends finance<lb/>
consultant for lottery board<lb/>
RALEIGH, NC. (AP) - An Information<lb/>
technology consultant from Charlotte<lb/>
was recommended Wednesday by<lb/>
state Senate leader Marc Basnlght<lb/>
to join the new North Carolina State<lb/>
Lottery Commission.<lb/>
Bridget-Anne Hampden is president<lb/>
and chief executive officer of JHR<lb/>
& Associates LLC, a management<lb/>
consulting firm with clients including<lb/>
Lexmark International and the<lb/>
Charlotte Sting of the Women's<lb/>
National Basketball Association.<lb/>
If hernomination is confirmed byGcv Mike<lb/>
Easley, she will replace Malachi Greene<lb/>
of Charlotte, who resigned because<lb/>
of health issues and his schedule.<lb/>
Basnight originally chose retired<lb/>
educator Shirley Frye of Greensboro<lb/>
to replace Greene. But she withdrew<lb/>
her name after learning of potential<lb/>
conflicts of interest because of clients<lb/>
of her husband's law practice.<lb/>
The nine-member commission has<lb/>
another vacancy, created when<lb/>
Gordon Myers stepped down Nov.<lb/>
14. Myers cited a potential conflict of<lb/>
interest because he is a former vice<lb/>
president of the Asheville-based Ingles<lb/>
Markets grocery store chain, which<lb/>
may seek to sell lottery tickets.<lb/>
A third commissioner, Kevin Geddings of<lb/>
Charlotte, resigned amid questions about<lb/>
work he did for a potential lottery vendor<lb/>
as state lawmakers debated lottery<lb/>
legislation this summer. Prosecutors are<lb/>
now investigating whether he and others<lb/>
violated the state's lobbying law.<lb/>
State House Speaker Jim Black, who<lb/>
must name Myers' replacement, chose<lb/>
former UNC-Charlotte Chancellor Jim<lb/>
Woodward to succeed Geddings.<lb/>

Housing bubble: to burst or<lb/>
not to burst is the question<lb/>
Economists are watching the housing market closely.<lb/>
The future Of the hOUSing combined despite the fact<lb/>
market in the U.S.<lb/>
LEE SCHWARZ<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
In the last seven years hous-<lb/>
ing prices have outpaced infla-<lb/>
tion by 60 percent.<lb/>
Usually, home prices are cor-<lb/>
related very closely to inflation.<lb/>
This has been attributed to low<lb/>
interest rates and the fact that the<lb/>
economy was doing well enough<lb/>
for people to buy affordable<lb/>
homes for the first time. Many<lb/>
people believe this incredible<lb/>
pace cannot endure and that the<lb/>
sudden halt in growth will cause<lb/>
the bubble to burst much like the<lb/>
way tech stocks did in 2000.<lb/>
The housing bubble and the<lb/>
tech stock bubble are not the<lb/>
same, however. In 2000, there<lb/>
were many Internet compa-<lb/>
nies that had no earnings and<lb/>
were selling for high prices. The<lb/>
demand for these companies<lb/>
created the market and drove the<lb/>
prices higher.<lb/>
"Amazon is priced at more<lb/>
than Ford and General Motors<lb/>
Amazon has never made a dime<lb/>
said Berkshire Hathaway Chair-<lb/>
man Warren Buffett.<lb/>
"That does not even make<lb/>
sense to the inexperienced inves-<lb/>
tor<lb/>
When bubbles are allowed<lb/>
to continue too fast and for too<lb/>
long, a depression can take hold<lb/>
like the Great Depression, which<lb/>
marked the last time that hous-<lb/>
ing prices fell so precipitously<lb/>
because unemployment was<lb/>
around 25 percent.<lb/>
Houses are not nearly as vola-<lb/>
tile and have an intrinsic value,<lb/>
meaning they will not go to zero<lb/>
in price.<lb/>
This is mainly due to Keynes-<lb/>
ian economics, stating that<lb/>
builders and manufacturers will<lb/>
seldom, but probably never, sell<lb/>
their products for a price lower<lb/>
than what it costs them to pro-<lb/>
duce it.<lb/>
Keynesian Economics refers<lb/>
to John Maynard Keynes, the<lb/>
noted economist who virtually<lb/>
invented modern economics by<lb/>
de-bunking classical economic<lb/>
thought and citing what he<lb/>
observed happening in the real<lb/>
world in that producers often<lb/>
will lay off workers in bad times<lb/>
rather than take less money for<lb/>
their goods. Keynes resigned in<lb/>
protest due to the harsh stipula-<lb/>
tions placed on Germany by the<lb/>
Treaty of Versailles at the end of<lb/>
World War 1.<lb/>
Houses cost a lot of money<lb/>
to build in terms of raw materi-<lb/>
als and labor and a house has<lb/>
an intrinsic value that a lot of<lb/>
stocks do not have. Housing is a<lb/>
significant part of the U.S. Gross<lb/>
Domestic Product, with about<lb/>
5 percent of it based on home<lb/>
building.<lb/>
While the steep increase in<lb/>
price may not continue much<lb/>
longer, due in part to the increase<lb/>
in interest rates, the market will<lb/>
not completely "bottom out" as<lb/>
the average person owns a home<lb/>
for 14 years and 85 percent of<lb/>
houses in the U.S. are owned by<lb/>
individuals rather than investors,<lb/>
thereby making for a drastically<lb/>
less volatile market - one based<lb/>
largely on value.<lb/>
In addition, the age demo-<lb/>
graphic with the largest percent-<lb/>
age of homeowners is senior citi-<lb/>
zens who have a "buy-and-hold"<lb/>
mentality.<lb/>
In general, the real estate<lb/>
market catches up to economic<lb/>
changes much more slowly than<lb/>
the stock market because of the<lb/>
physical nature of buildings.<lb/>
In short, a housing bubble of<lb/>
tech bubble proportions should<lb/>
not be feared because the incred-<lb/>
ible rise in prices may soon cease.<lb/>

My Random Column<lb/>
Exams, holidays a time<lb/>
of stress and frustration<lb/>
"Exam" - it is the word rhat strike i fear in<lb/>
the hearts and minds of college students<lb/>
everywhere. The time is upon us at ECU. As<lb/>
most people are filling malls to do the perfect<lb/>
Christmas gifts and preparing for family visits,<lb/>
college students are piling into the library for<lb/>
precious silence.<lb/>
It is a time of year when stress mounts and<lb/>
patience can easily run out. And how unfortu-<lb/>
nate - this stressful time of year manages to<lb/>
coincide with the time of year when holiday<lb/>
jitters and pesky colds are also at their peak.<lb/>
The lack of sleep, the chaos of late-night study<lb/>
sessions and the germs can get to anyone if<lb/>
they aren't careful.<lb/>
Sleep becomes a thing of the past during this<lb/>
hectic time of year, and healthy eating habits<lb/>
are often neglected for the much easier option<lb/>
of grabbing a quick snack and a highly caffein-<lb/>
ated drink between study sessions.<lb/>
The staff of TEC understands the pressure of<lb/>
balancing exams, work and personal respon-<lb/>
sibilities. This is an exciting, yet somewhat<lb/>
pressure-filled time of the year. However, there<lb/>
are some things we can all do to minimize the<lb/>
effects of stress through exam time.<lb/>
Remember to get as much sleep as possible<lb/>
- as difficult as that may sound. Staying up<lb/>
all night to study may seem like a great idea<lb/>
the day before an exam, but It can often leave<lb/>
you too tired to perform well when exam time<lb/>
finally arrives.<lb/>
Don't forget to eat three healthy, balanced<lb/>
meals everyday. Meal time can be a great<lb/>
excuse to take a relaxing break from studying.<lb/>
Stock up on vitamin C to help protect against<lb/>
colds and viruses. After all, this is the time of<lb/>
year when no one can afford to be sick.<lb/>
Study diligently and make use o' Joyner<lb/>
Library's study rooms and resources and find<lb/>
relief in the fact that in a week or so, you'll be<lb/>
enjoying a nice, relaxing break.<lb/>

The ten things that I hate most right now<lb/>
And no, people aren't<lb/>
things - that list would<lb/>
be too long<lb/>
GARY MCCABE<lb/>
BITTER BOULEVARD<lb/>
I'm being told that last week's<lb/>
column had mixed reviews. I<lb/>
understand that a lot of people<lb/>
liked the article. I understand<lb/>
that readers enjoyed my sticking<lb/>
up for "Arrested Development<lb/>
whose last day on the air should<lb/>
be celebrated each year as a<lb/>
national holiday in memorial of<lb/>
what a great show it was.<lb/>
However, I'm also being told<lb/>
that some readers didn't like<lb/>
what I had to say. Namely, they<lb/>
didn't appreciate when I said<lb/>
that I hated the South and the<lb/>
Midwest. I mean, I guess that I<lb/>
really can't blame them for not<lb/>
looking at those statements in<lb/>
a larger picture and see that I<lb/>
meant that I hate the Midwest<lb/>
because I'm subjected to a ton<lb/>
of shows catering to that audi-<lb/>
ence yet shows I'm interested in<lb/>
get cancelled because they don't<lb/>
appeal to Midwesterners and<lb/>
Southerners.<lb/>
I guess I shouldn't take that<lb/>
leap of faith and expect so much<lb/>
from people. I shouldn't expect<lb/>
people to read on a level above<lb/>
that of a caveman. I shouldn't<lb/>
expect someone to read an article<lb/>
actively, trying to make inter-<lb/>
pretations and observations of<lb/>
their own.<lb/>
What I should expect, I guess,<lb/>
are angry Pirate Rants, such as the<lb/>
one which so eloquently stated,<lb/>
"Stupid people write stupid arti-<lb/>
cles just because I denigrated<lb/>
your region of choice.<lb/>
So I'm going to be very plain<lb/>
with the article today. Don't<lb/>
worry - I'm not going to try and<lb/>
make you think too much today.<lb/>
Instead of some political com-<lb/>
mentary on - oh, I don't know<lb/>
- President Bush admitting to not<lb/>
having a timetable for pulling out<lb/>
of Iraq. Instead, here's a list of ten<lb/>
things that I really hate right now<lb/>
- in order.<lb/>
10. FedEx: I'm waiting on a<lb/>
package from CircuitCity.com<lb/>
with my new XM gear and you<lb/>
know what, I've been waiting<lb/>
too long. It was supposed to be<lb/>
on my door early on the first<lb/>
day of Thanksgiving break. It<lb/>
didn't come.<lb/>
So on Friday morning, I get a<lb/>
call from the main office confirm-<lb/>
ing my address. Here's the gist:<lb/>
"Can we bring it today?" "No.<lb/>
Now I'm gone. Bring it Monday,<lb/>
please "We only deliver to<lb/>
businesses on Monday "Fine.<lb/>
Tuesday - early "Sure thing<lb/>
Now it's Tuesday afternoon and<lb/>
- shocker - no package. I wonder<lb/>
what Brown can do for me<lb/>
9. "Lost The first season was<lb/>
amazing and I'll admit it, I jumped<lb/>
on the bandwagon late and got<lb/>
hooked watching season one on<lb/>
DVD. Season two on the other<lb/>
hand has been awful. The pieces are<lb/>
still there and I still watch, but it's<lb/>
been very frustrating to watch.<lb/>
It's eight or nine episodes in<lb/>
and I've learned next to nothing.<lb/>
The show is moving at a snail's<lb/>
pace, constantly teasing me with<lb/>
something promising only to let<lb/>
me down. But the worst move<lb/>
was killing off the cute blonde<lb/>
and adding the "feisty" Anna<lb/>
Lucia who's dialogue sounds like<lb/>
it was ripped from Dirty Harry.<lb/>
Good move.<lb/>
8. Pink Shirts. I think the day<lb/>
after Kanye West became famous,<lb/>
an announcement was made:<lb/>
"It's okay to wear pink shirts,<lb/>
guys I think that guys have<lb/>
been waiting forever to break out<lb/>
the pink - like they kept in a case<lb/>
on a wall that says: "In case of rap<lb/>
star making it OK, break glass<lb/>
Pink shirts are disgusting, you<lb/>
trend whores.<lb/>
7. The Philadelphia Eagles.<lb/>
It's not exactly their fault but<lb/>
every time you turn on ESPN or<lb/>
open a sports page, all you read<lb/>
about is the Philadelphia Eagles<lb/>
and Terrell Owens or Donovan<lb/>
McNabb. Philly is awful this year<lb/>
and won't even make the playoffs<lb/>
but somehow they get all of the<lb/>
attention while the Indianapolis<lb/>
Colts quietly sneak up on an<lb/>
undefeated season and players<lb/>
like Shaun Alexander, Carson<lb/>
Palmer and LaDainian Tomlin-<lb/>
son have amazing seasons.<lb/>
6. The Democratic Party.<lb/>
I've already gone on record as a<lb/>
Libertarian so you know how I<lb/>
feel about both the Democratic<lb/>
and Republican Parties. But the<lb/>
Democrats especially raise my ire<lb/>
because they seem to think that<lb/>
Hillary Clinton has a chance at<lb/>
winning the presidency in 2008.<lb/>
America is regressing socially<lb/>
and somehow they think she<lb/>
shocked the world despite fight-<lb/>
ing for a percentage of a percent-<lb/>
age of the vote? Because you have<lb/>
to assume that at least 40 percent<lb/>
won't vote for her purely because<lb/>
she's a woman. Get ready for a<lb/>
Republican dynasty because the<lb/>
Democrats don't even want to<lb/>
put up a fight.<lb/>
S. Nintendo. First they push<lb/>
the only Gamecube game anyone<lb/>
wants to play (The Legend of<lb/>
Zelda: Twilight Princess) to spring<lb/>
2006 and now they introduce<lb/>
their new hardware (Revolution)<lb/>
with a controller that looks like a<lb/>
cheap television remote. I'm sure<lb/>
it'll be great for Pokemon games<lb/>
and the other kiddie garbage<lb/>
Nintendo puts out but there's no<lb/>
way I'll want to play a real game<lb/>
using it. I wonder what the PS3<lb/>
can do for me<lb/>
4. The NHL. Hockey is back!<lb/>
Only it's completely different<lb/>
because of the rule changes to<lb/>
make it more appealing to stupid<lb/>
Midwesterners. More goals! Less<lb/>
contact! More penalties! A league<lb/>
full of mediocre teams! The NHL<lb/>
Whored out their entire sport.<lb/>
3. "Black Friday Black Friday<lb/>
is the day human beings devolve<lb/>
into animals for the sake of<lb/>
saving a few dollars. Old women,<lb/>
children - no one is safe from a<lb/>
good old fashioned trampling<lb/>
when $3.99 DVDs are on the line.<lb/>
Animals, I tell you, animals.<lb/>
2. "The Howard Stern Show I<lb/>
used to love Howard Stern - now<lb/>
I've finally seen the light. Hearing<lb/>
about how great and revolution-<lb/>
ary is fine - if he's actually doing<lb/>
something great and revolution-<lb/>
ary. Instead of going on and on<lb/>
about how entertaining the show<lb/>
will be on Sirius, the best way<lb/>
to sell the move is by - get this<lb/>
- actually doing an entertaining<lb/>
show, not complaining about<lb/>
your perfect life. Long live the<lb/>
new kings of radio: XM's Opie &<lb/>
Anthony and Ron & Fez.<lb/>
1. The South and the Mid-<lb/>
west. I'll briefly explain this with<lb/>
an analogy: Let's say I was an<lb/>
aspiring weatherman. I get out<lb/>
of ECU and I begin working at<lb/>
one of the local stations. Then<lb/>
if I'm lucky, I can move to Char-<lb/>
lotte. Then, maybe if I'm lucky,<lb/>
I can move to Indianapolis. But<lb/>
here's the thing: the pinnacle<lb/>
would always be a northeast city<lb/>
like New York City or Boston or<lb/>
somewhere on the west coast<lb/>
like Los Angeles. And there's a<lb/>
reason for that but I'll let you<lb/>
draw your own conclusions as to<lb/>
why that is.<lb/>
THURSDAY December 1, 2005<lb/>
Pirate Rant<lb/>
In My Opinion<lb/>
(KRT) Those still doubtful<lb/>
about the reality of global warm-<lb/>
ing would do well to note the most<lb/>
recent issue of the journal Science.<lb/>
An article describes the findings<lb/>
of researchers who drilled two<lb/>
miles into the ice of the Antarc-<lb/>
tica, retrieving a sample that has<lb/>
yielded information about the<lb/>
Earth's climate the past 650,000<lb/>
years. Never before have climatolo-<lb/>
gists traveled so far back in time.<lb/>
The previous record extended back<lb/>
an estimated 440,000 years.<lb/>
What did scientists learn?<lb/>
Today's levels of carbon dioxide<lb/>
are 27 percent higher than they<lb/>
have been in all that time. The<lb/>
levels of methane, an even more<lb/>
troubling greenhouse gas, are 130<lb/>
percent higher.<lb/>
The international consensus<lb/>
of scientists warning about the<lb/>
threat of global warming has held<lb/>
that human activity since the late<lb/>
1800s has accelerated the heat-<lb/>
ing of the planet. These ice cores,<lb/>
revealing layers upon layers of<lb/>
fallen snow, plus compressed air<lb/>
bubbles, provide more decisive evi-<lb/>
dence of the recent rapid changes.<lb/>
The sudden buildup departs from<lb/>
much slower and more gradual<lb/>
past increases in the amount of<lb/>
greenhouse gases.<lb/>
Something critically telling<lb/>
occurred in the 19th century: the<lb/>
advent of sharply increased burn-<lb/>
ing of fossil fuels. It follows that<lb/>
reduced use of those fuels (coal<lb/>
and oil) is required to reverse a<lb/>
steady trend that threatens to<lb/>
alter our environment and way of<lb/>
life. That change need not arrive<lb/>
overnight. It must begin. In this<lb/>
country, it should start with a<lb/>
mandate that cars and trucks burn<lb/>
gasoline more efficiently.<lb/>
To all the smokers who actually defend their gross habit: Do<lb/>
you know what smoking does to you? It stunts your growth,<lb/>
it yellows your teeth and blackens your hings. Is that what<lb/>
you want? To be a yellow toothed midget with lung cancer?<lb/>
To the'people who complain about slow drivers on 264:<lb/>
You do realize that the speed limit applies to both lanes,<lb/>
right? I can't stand it when I'm going 70-75mph in the<lb/>
left lane and some jerk tailgates me because heshe<lb/>
wants to go 85 mph. Slow down! It will save you gas<lb/>
and possibly a speeding ticket.<lb/>
Gary McCabe, do you hate everybody? And if you don't,<lb/>
you sure act like it.<lb/>
Bicycle riders are supposed to have the same rights as<lb/>
cars. OK so why aren't they given tickets for going too<lb/>
slow and reckless driving?<lb/>
If Greenville is called G-Vegas because it's a city in the<lb/>
middle of nowhere like Las Vegas, then why can't the<lb/>
train engineers figure out how to go through town at<lb/>
some time other than a.m. or p.m. rush hour?<lb/>
To the dark haired girl that works at the Java City in the<lb/>
library, thank you for always being so nice to me and my<lb/>
friends when we come to get smoothies at night. You make<lb/>
them the best. You are the reason that we come there!<lb/>
I hate when people collect friends on Facebook! You<lb/>
don't know 1,000 people at ECU. Stop collecting.<lb/>
Five and a half years and summer school each time,<lb/>
Congrats roommate you finally made it.<lb/>
Why do girls always try to steal guy's clothing and<lb/>
personal things? Yet love to leave their toothbrush and<lb/>
other things around my house?<lb/>
To the girl who wants her guy to "feel special Boys<lb/>
don't deserve to feel specialand in the wise words of<lb/>
the girl in my dorm who practically lives in the lobby,<lb/>
"Boys are stupid. Throw rocks at them<lb/>
To the boy who thinks that downtown girls aren't<lb/>
classy maybe I like to have a few drinks, socialize<lb/>
once in a while that just makes me not boring not<lb/>
unclassy don't be mad cause your attempt to spin your<lb/>
game was unsuccessful.<lb/>
To the person who came up with the rules of driving<lb/>
on Highway 264,1 am glad that I am not the only one<lb/>
who feels this way. I am in with you on that.<lb/>
Number of detailed large projects: six. Avg. amount<lb/>
of hours spent in Rivers building this semester: 500.<lb/>
Number of Nervous Breakdowns within our class: 20.<lb/>
Having someone else to cry with you: priceless. The<lb/>
enormous amount of stress, pressure and few hours of<lb/>
sleep this semester has been hard on us but we had each<lb/>
other to get through it! I love my Jr. IDMR girls!<lb/>
I hate it when people talk on their cell phones In class<lb/>
when the professor steps outurn hello we're in college.<lb/>
Last time I checked it was still rude!<lb/>
To the person that replied that breathing in smoke from<lb/>
another person's cigarette won't cause cancer. You<lb/>
are completely wrong - second hand smoke is actu-<lb/>
ally worse. You are still breathing in the same 4,000<lb/>
carcinogens but in even higher concentrations because<lb/>
the temperature of the tar is lower.<lb/>
You didn't get in because your "slightly messed up" ID<lb/>
was probably fake, and we don't let underage people<lb/>
In. If you are really of age, go get a new ID or try PD's.<lb/>
How stupid are YOU?<lb/>
I hate it when no one else in my group project responds<lb/>
to e-mails except for two people - the other two I will<lb/>
tell our teacher that you didn't contribute jack.<lb/>
Saying "Merry Christmas" Isn't unconstitutional until<lb/>
the Supreme Court determines so. Until then, Merry<lb/>
Christmas everyone!<lb/>
It's not my job to carry your habit, so stop asking me to<lb/>
bum a cigarette. If you can't afford it, then quit.<lb/>
I think a professor's gone overboard when he thinks he<lb/>
can get away with calling a student fat in class! AND<lb/>
loudly arguing with a student and belittling him In<lb/>
front of the class. Watch out all you Shakespeare lovers,<lb/>
stay away from professor H.<lb/>
Well here we go again SGA once again throws more<lb/>
money at issues in an attempt to make them go away.<lb/>
When will people learn that more money will not solve<lb/>
a problem, it takes a plan and then implementing it. A<lb/>
budget would be a smart start.<lb/>
I am not comfortable having my social security number<lb/>
written down because the ECU system is down if you<lb/>
can't do it like it's suppose to be done, then shut the<lb/>
place down until it's fixed. How do I know that I can<lb/>
trust a part time worker or another student with that<lb/>
piece of paper? How do I know that it will be shredded<lb/>
so that no one else will see it? How do I know that I'll<lb/>
be charged right? Joke could be on you because I may<lb/>
not have any decline left.<lb/>
If people want to go to ECU and spend thousands of<lb/>
dollars to do nothing but party and slack off that's up<lb/>
to them so stop worrying about what they are doing<lb/>
and do your own thing.<lb/>
I'm sick of being sick!<lb/>
To the person who claimed that police only name the<lb/>
race of suspect if they are 'black it's people like you<lb/>
who cause a racial divide in this country.<lb/>
Don't forget your New Year's resolution over the holi-<lb/>
days!<lb/>
Rules for driving on 264 (and any other road), first MIND<lb/>
your own business and let the police officers do their job.<lb/>
On another note, let me guess what the police said when<lb/>
you reported a person for speeding. We'll keep an eye<lb/>
out for the suspected vehicle and the area. According to<lb/>
a Wake County Deputy Sheriff, this means they will do<lb/>
nothing, unless you are willing to take the accused to court<lb/>
and have reasonable evidence that that person was doing<lb/>
something wrong. My source said this is very hard because<lb/>
a simple, "he was going faster than me" doesn't count.<lb/>
So go ahead take us all to court, I bet you can't afford<lb/>
It. P.S. Stay to the right and there will be no problems.<lb/>

It's important to have a<lb/>
secure Web site because people<lb/>
can also steal personal informa-<lb/>

John McCarron, a computer<lb/>
repair technician for ACE Sup-<lb/>

because the minimal pop-up<lb/>
displays give people a less chance<lb/>
of getting spyware.<lb/>
Spyware is software made by<lb/>
publishers that allows them to<lb/>
snoop on your browsing activity,<lb/>
invade your privacy and flood you<lb/>
with horrible popup ads, accord-<lb/>
ing to the Dallas Morning News.<lb/>
However, Charlie Justice,<lb/>
coordinator of student initia-<lb/>
tives in ITCS, chooses Internet<lb/>
Explorer over Firefox because of<lb/>
recent security concerns.<lb/>
"Firefox is good, and for<lb/>
a while people were saying it<lb/>
was more secure than Internet<lb/>
Explorer, but recently because<lb/>
more people have been using it,<lb/>
more viruses and hackers have<lb/>
turned their attention to It<lb/>
said Justice.<lb/>
The Mozilla foundation<lb/>
which built Firefox is constantly<lb/>
upgrading security and fixing<lb/>
problems that may slow down<lb/>
the browser.<lb/>
In some cases, Internet<lb/>
Explorer is more efficient, but<lb/>
with open source browsers<lb/>
Firefox loads more quickly and<lb/>
offers more options.<lb/>
The only time Chase prefers<lb/>
Internet Explorer as opposed<lb/>
to Firefox is with Pirate-mail<lb/>
because it is operated by<lb/>
Microsoft technologies, which<lb/>
are compatible with Internet<lb/>
Explorer.<lb/>
To fix this problem, Business-<lb/>
week reported that the Mozilla<lb/>
foundation has organized a<lb/>
campaign to persuade Web sites<lb/>
to adopt open standards and wel-<lb/>
come all browsers. Firefox would<lb/>
be welcome in this case.<lb/>
Many people say Firefox is<lb/>
better than Internet Explore for<lb/>
designing Web sites and Chase<lb/>
testifies to that because the<lb/>

Firefox has taken in 12 percent<lb/>

Open source browsers that<lb/>
allow Firefox show that its usage<lb/>

As far as the future is con-<lb/>

Got Questions?<lb/>
Dear Features,<lb/>
Why Is It only called "cheating" when<lb/>
guys do it? My girlfriend enjoys<lb/>
clubbing more than I do and I'm<lb/>
tired of her rubbing against other<lb/>
men all night.<lb/>
-It wasn't me<lb/>
Dear It wasn't me,<lb/>
This is another one of those beautiful<lb/>
double standards. Girls typically think<lb/>
that everything that ever goes wrong<lb/>
In a relationship is always the guy's<lb/>
fault (and this Is not a bias column,<lb/>
you have two females writing this).<lb/>
Girls also tend to become more<lb/>
jealous than guys do, therefore they<lb/>
suspect more instances of foul play.<lb/>
Cheating comes in many different<lb/>
forms, depending on what your<lb/>
significant other feels. It can vary from<lb/>
anything like flirting with someone<lb/>
else to engaging in sexual activity<lb/>
with someone else (duh). Granted, it's<lb/>
probably not right for your girlfriend<lb/>
to go out to a club and grind against<lb/>
various other guys all night, but we<lb/>
can't tell your woman what she can<lb/>
and can't do.<lb/>
Recipes:<lb/>
Potato LatKes<lb/>
2 pounds russet (baking) potatoes<lb/>
1 medium onion<lb/>
12 cup chopped scallions, including<lb/>
the green part<lb/>
1 large egg beaten<lb/>
Salt and pepper to taste<lb/>
Vegetable oil for frying<lb/>
Peel the potatoes and put in cold<lb/>
water. Using a grater or a food<lb/>
processor coarsely grate the potatoes<lb/>
and onions. Place together In a<lb/>
fine-mesh strainer or tea towel and<lb/>
squeeze all the water over a bowl.<lb/>
The potato starch will settle to the<lb/>
bottom; reserve that after you have<lb/>
carefully poured off the water. Mix<lb/>
the potato and onion with the potato<lb/>
starch. Add the scallions, egg, and<lb/>
salt and pepper. Heat a griddle or<lb/>
non-stick pan and coat with a thin<lb/>
film of vegetable oil. Take about two<lb/>
tablespoons of the potato mixture in<lb/>
the palm of your hand and flatten as<lb/>
best you can. Place the potato mixture<lb/>
on the griddle, flatten with a spatula,<lb/>
and fry for a few minutes until golden.<lb/>
Flip the pancake over and brown<lb/>
the other side. Remove to paper<lb/>
towels to drain. Serve Immediately.<lb/>
Hot Chocolate with Peppermint<lb/>
Schnapps<lb/>
1 quart milk (skim, 2 percent or whole)<lb/>
or half-and-half<lb/>
6 ounces bittersweet or semisweet<lb/>
chocolate, chopped (recommended:<lb/>
Scharffenberger)<lb/>
9 ounces peppermint schnapps<lb/>
Whipped cream, for serving<lb/>
6 peppermint sticks, for serving<lb/>
Heat one cup of the milk In a<lb/>
medium saucepan over low heat.<lb/>
Add chocolate, stirring constantly,<lb/>
until melted. When the chocolate has<lb/>
melted, increase heat to medium and<lb/>
add the remainder of the milk while<lb/>
whisking rapidly. Do not allow to boil.<lb/>
Serve in small cups fortified with a<lb/>
jigger (1 12 ounces) of peppermint<lb/>
schnapps and a dollop of whipped<lb/>
cream. Add a peppermint stick to<lb/>
stir.<lb/>
Poached Apples with Vanilla<lb/>
Cinnamon Syrup<lb/>
4 granny smith apples, peeled with<lb/>
the stem on<lb/>
3 cups of sugar<lb/>
2 vanilla beans, split and scraped<lb/>
4 cinnamon sticks<lb/>
2 quarts of water<lb/>
Juice of one lemon<lb/>
In a roomy one gallon pot place<lb/>
peeled apples, vanilla, cinnamon and<lb/>
sugar. Cover with water then bring to<lb/>
a simmer over medium to low heat<lb/>
for twenty minutes. Once the apples<lb/>
are soft enough, pierce with a knife.<lb/>
Remove the apples with a slotted<lb/>
spoon to a holding plate. Reduce<lb/>
poaching liquid to a light syrup, then<lb/>
place the apples back in sauce pot<lb/>
and hold on warm until ready to<lb/>
serve. Use four small serving bowls<lb/>
with matching underliner plates then<lb/>
place one apple In the middle of each<lb/>
bowl. Pour warm syrup over each<lb/>
apple and then garnish cinnamon<lb/>
sticks and vanilla beans.<lb/>
Candled Yams<lb/>
4 pounds yams (or sweet potatoes),<lb/>
peeled and cut to large bite-sized<lb/>
pieces<lb/>
2 cups orange juice<lb/>
3 cups light com syrup<lb/>
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon<lb/>
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg<lb/>
14 cup vanilla extract<lb/>
2 teaspoons lemon zest<lb/>
2 tablespoons flour<lb/>
112 cups light brown sugar, packed<lb/>
1 12 cups granulated sugar<lb/>
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Boll<lb/>
yams until slightly underdone, to<lb/>
avoid breaking. Strain, cool and set<lb/>
aside. In a large container whisk<lb/>
together orange juice, corn syrup,<lb/>
cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and zest.<lb/>
In another bowl, whisk flour and both<lb/>
sugars together. Put cooled yams in a<lb/>
deep baking dish, add dry Ingredients<lb/>
and stir to coat. Pour liquid over yams<lb/>
and bake for 20 to 25 minutes.<lb/>
Another Jane Austen film classic<lb/>
Keira Knightly<lb/>
delivers Oscar worthy<lb/>
performance<lb/>
TREVOR KIRKENDALL<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Another celebrated Jane<lb/>
Austen novel has found its way<lb/>
to the big screen - again. Pride<lb/>
& Prejudice is, according to the<lb/>
Internet Movie Database, the<lb/>
ninth adaptation of the popular<lb/>
book first published in 1813. This<lb/>
new version was adapted by Deb-<lb/>
orah Moggach, directed by Joe<lb/>
Wright and stars Keira Knightley<lb/>
as the story's heroine.<lb/>
Knightley plays Elizabeth<lb/>
Bennett, one of five daughters<lb/>
to Mr. and Mrs. Bennett (Donald<lb/>
Sutherland and Brenda Blethyn).<lb/>
Mrs. Bennett is hard pressed to<lb/>
see that one of her daughters,<lb/>
preferably her eldest Jane (Rosa-<lb/>
mund Pike) will marry the wealth<lb/>
bachelor Mr. Bingley (Simon<lb/>
Woods). The daughters meet Mr.<lb/>
Bingley that night at a ball along<lb/>
with his sister Caroline (Kelly<lb/>
Reilly) and his friend Mr. Darcy<lb/>
(Matthew MacFayden).<lb/>
Mr. Bingley takes an immedi-<lb/>
ate liking to Jane which flatters<lb/>
Mrs. Bennett.<lb/>
Elizabeth, on the other hand,<lb/>
doesn't want anything to do with<lb/>
men right now. However, she is<lb/>
strangely attracted to Mr. Darcy.<lb/>
He is too at first, though he<lb/>
doesn't admit it right away.<lb/>
Keira Knightley as Elizabeth and Matthew Macfadyerv as Mr. Darcy, star in the film 'Pride & Prejudice<lb/>
Mrs. Bennett isn't too con-<lb/>
cerned if her daughters are in<lb/>
love with the men she wants<lb/>
them to marry, so long as they<lb/>
marry. With Jane and Mr. Bingley<lb/>
pretty much sealed up, she turns<lb/>
her attention to Elizabeth. She<lb/>
wants her to marry Mr. Collins<lb/>
(Tom Hollander) who has just<lb/>
moved into town. Elizabeth<lb/>
laughs at the thought of this, but<lb/>
her mother won't put up with<lb/>
that - she must marry this man.<lb/>
Elizabeth blows Mr. Collins off at<lb/>
another ball, this one at the Bing-<lb/>
ley's, especially when Mr. Darcy<lb/>
surprises her with a dance request.<lb/>
Soon after this, Elizabeth<lb/>
finds herself being more and<lb/>
more attracted to Mr. Darcy, but<lb/>
she tries to resist her temptations.<lb/>
Mr. Darcy does the same thing,<lb/>
but they always seem to end up<lb/>
at the same place together. One<lb/>
such incident occurs at the house<lb/>
of Lady Catherine de Bourg (Judi<lb/>
Dench), who is hard set on Mr.<lb/>
Darcy marrying her daughter.<lb/>
Her thoughts are that both she<lb/>
and Mr. Darcy were born into<lb/>
privileged families, and although<lb/>
the Bennett's are somewhat privi-<lb/>
leged, they have nowhere near<lb/>
the amount of estate that she and<lb/>
Mr. Darcy have.<lb/>
This is one of the most cel-<lb/>
ebrated stories in the history of<lb/>
literature. Anytime someone<lb/>
takes a stab at bringing such a<lb/>
story to the big screen is running<lb/>
the risk of messing it up some-<lb/>
how. In order to stay completely<lb/>
true to the book, the film would<lb/>
need to run somewhere near six<lb/>
hours in length or more. This<lb/>
has actually happened before.<lb/>
AStE did a TV miniseries for this<lb/>
story in 1980.<lb/>
Joe Wright's version is very<lb/>
true to the original book, and<lb/>
it does so in just over two hours.<lb/>
Every shot in this film is soaked<lb/>
with the same love that Austen<lb/>
used to create these characters<lb/>
and this story almost 200 years<lb/>
ago. Director of photography<lb/>
Roman Osin paints the picture<lb/>
of eighteenth century England<lb/>
with better than anyone else has<lb/>
in the past. His work on this film<lb/>
has some of the best cinematog-<lb/>
raphy in any film this year.<lb/>
Keira Knightley, fresh off an<lb/>
abominating performance in<lb/>
Domino, shows that she truly is a<lb/>
great actress with the potential<lb/>
of having a long and lustrous<lb/>
acting career ahead of her. She<lb/>
commands every scene she's in,<lb/>
including the ones alongside<lb/>
her former Oscar nominated<lb/>
and Oscar winning counterparts<lb/>
(Blethyn and Dench respectively).<lb/>
By the end of the award season,<lb/>
she too should be joining the<lb/>
ranks of Oscar nominees such as<lb/>
the aforementioned actresses.<lb/>
Matthew MacFayden is a<lb/>
sensation in his first leading per-<lb/>
formance. Everyone all the way<lb/>
down to the other sisters (Pike,<lb/>
Talulah Riley, Jena Malone and<lb/>
Carey Mulligan) are perfect in<lb/>
the roles they play. Dench, who is<lb/>
only on screen for a few minutes,<lb/>

Seen above: The main characters In Chris Columbus' screen adaptation of the Broadway musical.<lb/>
Better not pay this 'Rent'<lb/>
Some musicals should<lb/>
just stay on the stage<lb/>
TREVOR KIRKENDALL<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
The Broadway production of<lb/>
Rent is probably a phenomenal<lb/>
musical. I wouldn't know this<lb/>
because I have never had the<lb/>
opportunity to watch it on stage<lb/>
before. I still would like to have<lb/>
a chance to see it performed<lb/>
on stage somewhere even after<lb/>
seeing Chris Columbus' big<lb/>
screen adaptation, despite the<lb/>
absolute abomination that it is.<lb/>
Rent is the latest in the big<lb/>
screen musical adaptations in<lb/>
recent years. Moulin Rouge! res-<lb/>
urrected the movie musical after<lb/>
lying dormant for about three<lb/>
decades. The following year,<lb/>
Chicago won the Best Picture<lb/>
: Oscar, the first musical to win<lb/>
since Oliver in 1968. And last<lb/>
year, The Phantom of the Opera<lb/>
came to the big screen. This was<lb/>
a very good film, but it was not<lb/>
nearly as magical as witnessing<lb/>
it in person.<lb/>
This was the attitude I had<lb/>
going into Rent. Having never<lb/>
seen it, I was wondering if there<lb/>
was anyway for me to view it with<lb/>
an unbiased perspective. I hadn't<lb/>
even heard any of the music from<lb/>
the show before, except for the<lb/>
song that was in the trailer.<lb/>
The big screen adaptation of<lb/>
Rent reminds us of why the movie<lb/>
musical became such a box office<lb/>
disaster in the 1970s. It's one of<lb/>
the most painful movie going<lb/>
experiences I've had all year long<lb/>
and I hope to soon forget it.<lb/>
Rent follows several friends<lb/>
in New York City who deal with<lb/>
the everyday things such as life,<lb/>
love and happiness. At the center<lb/>
of the story are two roommates,<lb/>
Mark (Anthony Rapp) and Roger<lb/>
(Adam Pascal). Mark has just<lb/>
been dumped by his girlfriend<lb/>
Maureen (Idina Menzel) for a<lb/>
lawyer named Joanne (Traci<lb/>
Thorns). Roger has just made<lb/>
friends with the tenet downstairs,<lb/>
a stripper named Mimi (Rosario<lb/>
Dawson). Their friend Collins<lb/>
(Jesse L. Martin) is back in town<lb/>
and soon meets a new lover,<lb/>
a cross-dresser named Angel<lb/>
(Wilson Jermaine Heredia).<lb/>
Mark and Roger's former room-<lb/>
mate turned landlord is Ben<lb/>
(Taye Diggs), who only appears<lb/>
when an antagonist in needed<lb/>
in the story. Other than that,<lb/>
there are no true bad-guys or<lb/>
dramatic conflicts in the story.<lb/>
The only types of conflict<lb/>
revolve around certain individ-<lb/>
uals' sexual preference and how<lb/>
a few of them deal with having<lb/>
AIDS on an everyday basis.<lb/>
Not everyone in this group is<lb/>
infected with this deadly dis-<lb/>
ease, but a few of them are.<lb/>
The characters sing. Then<lb/>
they sing and sing again. There<lb/>
is very little dialogue between<lb/>
characters other than the lyrics<lb/>
in the songs that the late Jona-<lb/>
than Larson had written. Some<lb/>

More than just another<lb/>

AARON BORREGO<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Well, it seems that holiday<lb/>
time inspires more to life than<lb/>
just spiked eggnog, endless lines<lb/>
at the local mall and most of all,<lb/>
presents! Now we have the glori-<lb/>
ous return of holiday flavored<lb/>
music. Christmas music mainly<lb/>
has a Christian feel to it, but now<lb/>
the Jewish faith has something<lb/>
modern to listen too.<lb/>
Hanukkah Rocks is certainly<lb/>
a well welcomed response to<lb/>
barn burners such as Marlah<lb/>
Carey and Kenny G busting<lb/>
out their respective arsenal to<lb/>
accost unsuspecting Christmas<lb/>
ballads.<lb/>
With this change, gone are<lb/>
the 20 thousand live renditions<lb/>
of "Santa Claus is coming to<lb/>
town" done by fore mentioned<lb/>
artists. Also, gone are the head-<lb/>

Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike<lb/>
Dirnt formed a band called Sweet<lb/>
Children in California when<lb/>
they were 14 (or 16, depending<lb/>
on where you look). Once they<lb/>
added a drummer named Al<lb/>
Sobrante, they changed their<lb/>
name to a moniker you might<lb/>
just recognize, unless you've<lb/>
been living under a rock for quite<lb/>
some time - Green Day. The term<lb/>
Green Day came from a slang<lb/>
term for smoking marijuana.<lb/>
Lead singer Armstrong actually<lb/>
had the nickname "two dollar<lb/>
bill" since he used to sell it in<lb/>
high school for that price.<lb/>
In 1989, they were signed to<lb/>
a label named Lookout! Records<lb/>
and released their first EP entitled<lb/>
1,000 Hours. In 1990, Tre' Cool<lb/>
joined the band to drum and soon<lb/>
became a permanent drummer.<lb/>
Now, 16 years later, Green<lb/>
Day has been through the north-<lb/>
e:n California underground<lb/>
punk scene and survived a few<lb/>
letdown albums and had some<lb/>
boomers, but has persevered to<lb/>
their current status as a world-<lb/>
famous punk rock band since<lb/>
2000. In 2000 after the release of<lb/>
their album Warning, many fans<lb/>
and critics declared the Green<lb/>
Day was dying a slow death, but<lb/>
wouldn't live much longer.<lb/>
The band fought through the<lb/>
criticisms and crash of Warning,<lb/>
as well some other obstacles. The<lb/>
members dealt with some infight-<lb/>
ing and fixed their own conflicts.<lb/>
Then the master tapes for their<lb/>
newest album (20 tracks in all)<lb/>
were stolen. They still persevered,<lb/>
starting over from scratch and<lb/>
creating a new album, American<lb/>
Idiot, which released in 2004.<lb/>
This album drew on much of the<lb/>
political unrest of the time (the<lb/>
title track became very popular<lb/>
around the release of the album).<lb/>
American Idiot debuted at number<lb/>
one on the Billboard charts, the<lb/>
first ever Green Day album to<lb/>
do so. It has been billed as a<lb/>
"punk rock opera but whatever<lb/>
you would call it, it signaled the<lb/>
band's rise from near-death and<lb/>
they changed everything from<lb/>
their wardrobe and hairstyles to<lb/>
the instruments they play.<lb/>
Now, they've released Bullet<lb/>
in a Bible, the CD and DVD of<lb/>
two live shows from the Milton<lb/>
Keynes National Bowl in London,<lb/>
England. The album is a perfor-<lb/>
mance of mostly singles from<lb/>
American Idiot with some songs<lb/>
from other albums mixed in,<lb/>
like "Longview "Minority" and<lb/>
"Good Riddance (Time of Your<lb/>
Life) The group's popularity has<lb/>
clearly gone international if this<lb/>
album's background noise is any<lb/>
indication. Their reception (they<lb/>
rocked a crowd of more than<lb/>
130,000 screaming fans) can<lb/>
signify that they have completed<lb/>
the journey from the despondent<lb/>
children of punk rock to the<lb/>
distorted guitar voice of politi-<lb/>
cal discontent throughout the<lb/>
world. For any who disagree with<lb/>
that statement, listen to their<lb/>
performance of "Minority and<lb/>
hear the words of Armstrong,<lb/>
"Remember one thing - regardless<lb/>
of who the powers tha be are, the<lb/>
people that you elect, the people<lb/>
that I elect into office, remember,<lb/>
you have the (expletive) power,<lb/>
we are the (expletive) leaders,<lb/>
don't let these (expletive) dictate<lb/>
your life or tell you what to do<lb/>
The album itself is actually<lb/>
very good, the music a refresh-<lb/>
ing mix of new and old that<lb/>
long-time fans are sure to delight<lb/>
in, as well as fans who (you can<lb/>
admit it, it's not a sin) have been<lb/>
won over by American Idiot. Don't<lb/>
throw away or store away the<lb/>
DVD, either - in many ways it<lb/>
will be more of an experience<lb/>
than listening to the CD. When<lb/>

TEC's masterpiece spotlight: Rock bands<lb/>
i<lb/>
Uncovering the best<lb/>
cover songs<lb/>
GARY MCCABE<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Even more rare than the<lb/>
sober 1960s rock star is the<lb/>
cover song, which eclipses the<lb/>
original version. Many have<lb/>
tried and thus, the world has<lb/>
been subjected to a barrage of<lb/>
atrocious covers so bad that they<lb/>
destroy the legacy of whatever<lb/>
song the band is attempting to<lb/>
pay homage to.<lb/>
The list of terrible covers is<lb/>
staggering - Motley Crtie doing<lb/>
The Beatles' "llelter Skelter The<lb/>
Lemonheads doing Simon &<lb/>
Garfunkle's "Mrs. Robinson No<lb/>
Doubt doing Dexy's Midnight<lb/>
Runners' "Come on, Eileen Alien<lb/>
Ant Farm doing Michael Jackson's<lb/>
"Smooth Criminal Elton John<lb/>
doing The Beatles' "Lucy in the<lb/>
Sky with Dia-<lb/>
monds" and<lb/>
Limp Bizkit<lb/>
doing "Faith<lb/>
And that's just<lb/>
off the top of<lb/>
my head.<lb/>
These are all<lb/>
songs that not<lb/>
only make me<lb/>
turn the dial of<lb/>
my stereo when<lb/>
they come on,<lb/>
they make me<lb/>
think much less<lb/>
of the original<lb/>
version simply<lb/>
because any-<lb/>
time I hear the<lb/>
good version,<lb/>
I'll think of the<lb/>
bad version.<lb/>
There should be laws protect-<lb/>
ing certain songs from this kind<lb/>
of treatment. 1 mean, if I ran the<lb/>
world, covering anything from<lb/>
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones,<lb/>
David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Led<lb/>
Zeppelin, Neil Young, Lou Reed,<lb/>
Tom Petty or anyone in that class<lb/>
of musicians would be punish-<lb/>
able by death. The means for<lb/>
the execution, of course, differs<lb/>
depending on how bad the cover<lb/>
is. If it's pretty bad, you get the<lb/>
firing squad. If it's U2 doing<lb/>
"Helter Skelter" bad, you get raped<lb/>
with a hatchet and left to bleed<lb/>
to death violated, cold and alone.<lb/>
I wish the White House had a<lb/>
suggestion box.<lb/>
Don't get my wrong, though.<lb/>
There have been a few covers<lb/>
worthy of praise. Even fewer in<lb/>
number are the covers which<lb/>
eclipse the original and become<lb/>
the definitive version of a song.<lb/>
This week, I would like to high-<lb/>
light the very few elite cover<lb/>
songs which fall into the category<lb/>
of "masterpiece<lb/>
Joe Cocker - "With a<lb/>
Little Help from My Friends<lb/>
I know, I know - this song breaks<lb/>
rule number one by covering a<lb/>
Beatles song and had my ideas<lb/>
been implemented in the 1970s,<lb/>
the world have to go on without<lb/>
this amazing version of a throw-<lb/>
away song Lennon and McCart-<lb/>
ney threw to Ringo.<lb/>
Where the Beatles version<lb/>
sounds hollow behind Ringo's<lb/>
timid vocal delivery and the<lb/>
band's simple arrangement, Cock-<lb/>
er's version is a lush powerhouse<lb/>
of a song with Cocker doing pro-<lb/>
viding a vocal tour de force.<lb/>
I defy you to find a singer<lb/>
with more passion and power in<lb/>
their performance than Cocker.<lb/>
Cocker was gutsy to take a Beatles<lb/>
song of all artists and completely<lb/>
retool it until it's hardly recogniz-<lb/>
able, but he was and we as listen-<lb/>
ers are better for it.<lb/>
Mini Hendrix - "All Along<lb/>
the Watchtower Bob Dylan's<lb/>
original attempt at "All Along<lb/>
the Watchtower" is an incredible<lb/>
exercise in soHgwriting however<lb/>
is lacking in its performance. I'm<lb/>
not a huge fan of the original<lb/>
simply because the harmonica<lb/>
Dylan uses hurts my ears.<lb/>
Hendrix's take on the song is<lb/>
a whole different story. Pounding<lb/>
into your headphones with drums<lb/>
that would have woken Terri Schi-<lb/>
avo, Hendrix takes the Dylan clas-<lb/>
sic and infuses it with guitar licks<lb/>
that envelop the song throughout.<lb/>
The words don't matter. Hendrix's<lb/>
guitar is doing all the talking. And<lb/>
that guitar work is more expres-<lb/>
sive than even Bob Dylan could<lb/>
ever be. I read that Bob Dylan<lb/>
has used Hendrix's arrangement<lb/>
whenever he performs the song.<lb/>
Good move.<lb/>
Johnny Cash - "Hurt<lb/>
"Hurt" was the coup de grace to<lb/>
Trent Reznor's The Downward<lb/>
Spiral, an emotional bloodletting<lb/>
about, well, bloodletting - cut-<lb/>
ting yourself, mutilating yourself<lb/>
with knives or drugs to make sure<lb/>
you're even alive.<lb/>
When Johnny Cash covered<lb/>
"Hurt" for his final album Ameri-<lb/>
can IV: The Man Comes Around,<lb/>
it was the coup de grace to his<lb/>
entire career. Only Reznor's lyrics<lb/>
ring more true for the man who's<lb/>
finally realizing his own mortal-<lb/>
ity. With his steady and striking<lb/>
baritone, Cash pierces the listen-<lb/>
ers' souls as he wails, "What have<lb/>
I becomeMy sweetest friend<lb/>
everyone I knowgoes away in the<lb/>
end only to barter with fate for<lb/>
another chance at life.<lb/>
The arrangement and Cash's<lb/>
voice is nothing short of haunt-<lb/>
ing. The feeling you get listening<lb/>
to "Hurt" is a feeling you can<lb/>
never shake. The song attaches<lb/>
itself to your soul and relent-<lb/>
lessly holds on for dear life. The<lb/>
song is all the more powerful<lb/>
considering the circumstances<lb/>
around it. His wife June Carter<lb/>
Cash died shortly after its release.<lb/>
Cash himself died four months<lb/>
later. Cash personified pain and<lb/>
anguish throughout his career.<lb/>
"Hurt" exemplifies Cash's entire<lb/>
life in three minutes, 38 seconds<lb/>
of beautiful, sorrowful bliss. If<lb/>
"Hurt" becomes Cash's legacy, it's<lb/>
only fitting.<lb/>

is as solid as always. And don't<lb/>
be fooled by lack of screen time<lb/>
- she won an Oscar for Shakespeare<lb/>
in Low and only clocked in eight<lb/>
minutes. The best supporting role<lb/>
is that of Blethyn as the Bennett<lb/>
mother. She's a scene stealer in<lb/>
almost every shot she appears<lb/>
in. Her character's witty humor<lb/>
keeps everyone engaged in the<lb/>
story being presented on the<lb/>
screen. This is ensemble acting<lb/>
performance of the year for<lb/>
everyone on screen.<lb/>
Pride & Prejudice is the type of<lb/>
film that defines what a romance<lb/>
movie truly is. Every year we see<lb/>
these pointless romantic com-<lb/>
edies that are just like everything<lb/>
else that came out the week<lb/>
before it. This one may also<lb/>
be like everything, but guess<lb/>
what? The story is 192 years<lb/>
old. If anyone is copying stories<lb/>
here, it's all these contempo-<lb/>
rary films that take their ideas<lb/>
from stories like this. When the<lb/>
same story is being repeated<lb/>
year in and year out for that<lb/>
amount of time, that's a legacy.<lb/>
Pride & Prejudice reminds us<lb/>
of where our favorite romance<lb/>
films of today comes from, and<lb/>
it does so in the true filmmaking<lb/>
sense that is all but gone in the<lb/>
vast majority of today's films.<lb/>
If you are looking for a film<lb/>
to see on your holiday break,<lb/>
remember this one.<lb/>

and truly unique album leaves<lb/>
listeners in limbo wondering<lb/>
where music like this originates.<lb/>
To this end, we have the<lb/>
creative minds of Adam Gardner<lb/>
of Gusto and Dave Schneider<lb/>
of The Zambonis to thank for<lb/>
their collaboration. These two<lb/>
met on a tour featuring both of<lb/>
their current bands in April of<lb/>
2005. Somewhere along the trip,<lb/>
Gardner mentioned to Schneider<lb/>
they should write a CD based on<lb/>
Hanukkah. Being that both men,<lb/>
of the Jewish persuasion, were<lb/>
writing an all Hanukkah album,<lb/>
humor was at a premium during<lb/>
their collective efforts.<lb/>
"Applesauce vs. Sour cream"<lb/>
is very indicative of this seemly<lb/>
effervescent statement. It is quite<lb/>
a humorous song that chronicles<lb/>
the choice these strapping young<lb/>
lads faced during Hanukkah<lb/>
time. Headlined by tunes such as<lb/>
"Latke Clan" and "Goyim friends<lb/>
this album is pretty humorous to<lb/>
non-Jewish listeners. This might<lb/>
be because I don't quite understand<lb/>
the meanings behind the words.<lb/>
The song styles range from<lb/>
early British invasion to Ramones<lb/>
inspired punk, and yet, is not for<lb/>
everyone because it is purely so<lb/>
different in the delivery.<lb/>
For all those who didn't<lb/>
know, the miracle of Hanukkah<lb/>
is where the "Eternal Light" was<lb/>
to be made in a temple from a<lb/>
small lamp and jug of oil. The oil<lb/>
was only supposed to last for one<lb/>
day, but instead lasted for eight<lb/>
days which is a true miracle indeed.<lb/>
Going along with religious<lb/>
doctrine, the LeeVees wrote<lb/>
the entire album in just eight<lb/>
days! I will be the first to admit<lb/>
that the songwriting leaves a<lb/>
lot of room for improvement,<lb/>
however, should still be noted as<lb/>
entertaining and a descent listen<lb/>
to who venture for this album.<lb/>
The music itself is quite<lb/>
pleasing and easy to listen to.<lb/>
The entire album is nice to listen<lb/>
through from start to end and<lb/>
should be given a chance to<lb/>
music "thrill seekers<lb/>
Overall, this album is good<lb/>
but not great or even for every-<lb/>
one. Songwriting gets a C the<lb/>
music gets a B and overall album<lb/>
gets a hard earned C. Hopefully<lb/>
someone will come across this<lb/>
album and appreciate it for what<lb/>
it is, a humorous attempt at holi-<lb/>
day music, which everyone could<lb/>
use a little bit of humor during<lb/>
this time of year.<lb/>

of the actors have very poor sing-<lb/>
ing skills, so it's a little hard to<lb/>
follow when they're singing.<lb/>
In an attempt to avoid both<lb/>
spoilers and large amounts of<lb/>
controversy over my opinion on<lb/>
this film and the filmmaking, I<lb/>
won't go into any types of hard<lb/>
criticism on the quality of film-<lb/>
making being presented here.<lb/>
However, I will say that<lb/>
some musicals should be meant<lb/>
to stay on the stage and not<lb/>
be moved to the silver screen.<lb/>
People who have not seen<lb/>
Larson's musical on Broadway<lb/>
are not aware of some of the<lb/>
flashy staging technique used<lb/>
to bring the story to life. That's<lb/>
what makes the stage such an<lb/>
amazing medium - everything<lb/>
happens right before your eyes.<lb/>
It's a jaw dropping sight to see<lb/>
set pieces that weight over a ton<lb/>
disappear in a mere two second<lb/>
blackout. This type of magic is<lb/>
completely void on the screen.<lb/>
The type of magic that one<lb/>
would look for in a motion pic-<lb/>
ture would be an engaging story<lb/>
and identifiable characters that<lb/>
you could grow to love.<lb/>
Rent contains neither of these<lb/>
elements. You find yourself<lb/>
being too distracted by the<lb/>
singing and the dancing that<lb/>
you forget to attach yourself to<lb/>
the lives these people are lead-<lb/>
ing. And when director Colum-<lb/>
bus (Home Alone, Harry Potter)<lb/>
wants you to feel sorry for his<lb/>
characters, you only feel sorry<lb/>
for yourself for not buying the<lb/>
large popcorn that comes with<lb/>
free refills when you're done.<lb/>
I'm not saying that Rent is<lb/>
a bad musical. It's just not the<lb/>
first show I would have picked<lb/>
to make into a movie. The movie<lb/>
musicals that should be out in<lb/>
theaters are musicals that are<lb/>
written directly for the screen.<lb/>
Recently, John Turturro pre-<lb/>
miered his newest film as a direc-<lb/>
tor at the Toronto Film Festival.<lb/>
His film, Romance & Cigarettes,<lb/>
stars James Gandolfini and Susan<lb/>
Sarandon and it is a musical.<lb/>
Turturro wrote all the music and<lb/>
lyrics for the movie.<lb/>
This film, due for an inde-<lb/>
pendent release in the spring,<lb/>
has nothing to live up to.<lb/>
There's no stage musical for<lb/>
this film to draw comparisons<lb/>
with. These types of films are<lb/>
what movie musicals should be.<lb/>
I still plan on seeing Rent<lb/>
when it comes around North<lb/>
Carolina next time. I'm sure the<lb/>
story and characters would be<lb/>
much more engaging to watch as<lb/>
all the drama unfolds. Musicals<lb/>
like this with catchy songs and<lb/>
amazing performances would<lb/>
be so much better if it happens<lb/>
in front of you.<lb/>
This works better instead of<lb/>
having to sit through 135 min-<lb/>
utes of people who can't sing or<lb/>
dance and who act with about<lb/>
as much excitement as a three<lb/>
toed sloth.<lb/>

Green Day from page m<lb/>
you watch 130,000 plus with<lb/>
arms in the air and rocking out to<lb/>
popular Green Day tunes, you'll<lb/>
be reminded of watching groups<lb/>
like Queen rocking European<lb/>
audiences. If you want a scale of<lb/>
what 130,000 people is in a big<lb/>
group, consider the paid atten-<lb/>
dance of this year's Super Bowl<lb/>
was 78,125. So the concert totals<lb/>
nearly doubled that of the largest<lb/>
sporting event held in America.<lb/>
To put it succinctly, in the words<lb/>
of Rolling Stone magazine, Green<lb/>
Day has "conquered the world<lb/>
To see a band perform its<lb/>
songs live is an entirely different<lb/>
animal than sitting in a room<lb/>
listening to the album. The expe-<lb/>
rience is something entirely dif-<lb/>
ferent, because music that gets to<lb/>
your ears also comes alive before<lb/>
your eyes, if the band is truly<lb/>
committed to making powerful<lb/>
music. Green Day has revitalized<lb/>
a commitment to this musical<lb/>
experience, and it shows on the<lb/>
DVD. Armstrong and Dirnt fre-<lb/>
quently take off running across<lb/>
the stage, engage the audience<lb/>
on numerous occasions, and<lb/>
the performance is full of those<lb/>
moments when you can feel the<lb/>
blood running in your veins and<lb/>
heating up from passion.<lb/>

THURSDAY December 1, 2005<lb/>
NCAA football conference<lb/>
championship weekend<lb/>
iDnghorns, Trojans will<lb/>
be tested once more<lb/>
before postseason<lb/>
BRANDON HUGHES<lb/>
ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR<lb/>
The college football regular<lb/>
season has come to an end and<lb/>
all that's left before a heap of<lb/>
bowl games featuring mediocre<lb/>
matchups are the conference title<lb/>
games this weekend.<lb/>
USC and Texas roll into their<lb/>
meetings with undefeated records<lb/>
and a clear path to the national<lb/>
championship, but must take care<lb/>
of business to set up that January<lb/>
clash. It's time to preview the<lb/>
powerhouse Big 12, Pac 10, SEC<lb/>
and ACC conferences.<lb/>
2.4 yards per carry.<lb/>
Prediction<lb/>
There's no contest here. Texas<lb/>
completely overmatches Colo-<lb/>
rado in every aspect of the game<lb/>
and add in the fact that the<lb/>
Longhorns are disappointed with<lb/>
last week's performance and you<lb/>
get a blowout in the making. I<lb/>
think Texas is a virtual lock for<lb/>
the national title game, which<lb/>
is more than can be said for the<lb/>
USC Trojans. '<lb/>
Last meeting<lb/>
USC did not play UCLA this<lb/>
season, but did last year in a close<lb/>
29-24 win. Bush ran for over 200<lb/>
yards, but the Bruins held Lelnart<lb/>
in check to keep the game close.<lb/>
The Trojans' defense forced three<lb/>
turnovers and held UCLA to just<lb/>
17 yards rushing on 25 carries.<lb/>
Prediction<lb/>
This one could be much<lb/>
closer than the three-touchdown<lb/>
spread USC is favored by. The<lb/>
Trojans' defense is above average<lb/>
at best, allowing over 20 points<lb/>
per game and this game will be<lb/>
a shootout, but I'll take USC to<lb/>
march onto the national cham-<lb/>
pionship to face Texas.<lb/>
It . UHtlHln, ,<lb/>
Prediction<lb/>
These teams could easily be<lb/>
undefeated at this stage of the<lb/>
season, but this game could<lb/>
knock the loser out of a BCS bowl,<lb/>
especially if it's Georgia. The<lb/>
Bulldogs will come out on top<lb/>
of this defensive battle because I<lb/>
think Shockley has the advantage<lb/>
over Russell when it comes to<lb/>
sheer athletic ability and making<lb/>
a big play that could decide the<lb/>
outcome of the game.<lb/>

Colorado (7-4) vs. No. 2<lb/>
Texas (ll-O)<lb/>
Season review<lb/>
The Longhorns have steam-<lb/>
rolled opponents all season in<lb/>
convincing fashion, facing little<lb/>
competition since a 25-22 win<lb/>
over Ohio State in early Septem-<lb/>
ber. Junior quarterback Vince<lb/>
Young is one of the front runners<lb/>
to win the Heisman with the phe-<lb/>
nomenal year he's had through<lb/>
the air and on the ground. Young<lb/>
did have a rough outing last week<lb/>
against Texas A&M, but that may<lb/>
be just the motivation this vet-<lb/>
eran squad needs to pummel the<lb/>
Buffaloes on Saturday.<lb/>
Colorado boasts only a 5-<lb/>
3 conference mark, but that's<lb/>
enough to garner a spot in the<lb/>
title game. Coming off a 30-3<lb/>
blowout loss to Nebraska, the Buf-<lb/>
faloes are just trying to prepare for<lb/>
a no-name bowl in a few weeks.<lb/>
Last meeting<lb/>
Young was flawless in a 42-<lb/>
17 drubbing between these two<lb/>
teams earlier this season on Oct.<lb/>
15, completing 25-of-29 passes<lb/>
for 336 yards and two touch-<lb/>
downs and also rushing for three<lb/>
scores. Texas sprinted out to a<lb/>
28-0 advantage midway through<lb/>
the second quarter and held the<lb/>
Colorado rushing attack to just<lb/>
No. 11 UCLA (9-1) vs. No.<lb/>
1 USC (11-0)<lb/>
Season review<lb/>
Everyone knows the talent<lb/>
of quarterback Matt Leinart<lb/>
and running back Reggie Bush,<lb/>
but they overshadow a stellar<lb/>
supporting cast. LenDale White<lb/>
has rushed for over 1,000 yards<lb/>
and 19 touchdowns and receiver<lb/>
Dwayne Jarrett has over 1,000<lb/>
yards receiving. Steve Smith<lb/>
could also eclipse 1,000 yards<lb/>
receiving before the season is<lb/>
over. It's a good thing the Tro-<lb/>
jans are ridiculously awesome<lb/>
on offense, because their defense<lb/>
isn't national champion caliber.<lb/>
Fresno State and Notre Dame<lb/>
have both given USC a tight<lb/>
battle earlier this season.<lb/>
UCLA has one blemish on<lb/>
their record and it's an ugly one.<lb/>
The Bruins suffered a complete<lb/>
meltdown at the hands of Ari-<lb/>
zona, losing 52-14. Other than<lb/>
that, UCLA has been impressive,<lb/>
led by senior quarterback Drew<lb/>
Olson. Olson isn't getting much<lb/>
Heisman attention, but you<lb/>
would be hard pressed to find<lb/>
better numbers. The signal-caller<lb/>
has thrown 30 touchdowns and<lb/>
just three interceptions and he<lb/>
went 22-of-27 for 510 yards and<lb/>
five scores in his last outing.<lb/>
No. 13 Georgia (9-2) vs.<lb/>
No. 3 LSU (10-1)<lb/>
Season review<lb/>
These respective SEC squads<lb/>
will look back at this season and<lb/>
think about what could have<lb/>
been. Georgia fell to Florida when<lb/>
starting quarterback D.J. Shock-<lb/>
ley went down with an injury<lb/>
and lost to rival Auburn on a last<lb/>
second field goal. LSU led Tennes-<lb/>
see 24-7 heading into the fourth<lb/>
quarter, but came away with an<lb/>
overtime defeat for their only loss.<lb/>
Both teams have outstanding<lb/>
defenses, allowing around 14<lb/>
points per contest. Offensively,<lb/>
Shockley is the catalyst for the<lb/>
Bulldogs, throwing for 19 touch-<lb/>
downs and just five picks. On the<lb/>

Last meeting<lb/>
Georgia blew out LSU in a<lb/>
45-16 win last season on Its way<lb/>
to a 10-2 overall record. The<lb/>

offensive attack as quarterback<lb/>

and five touchdowns and the<lb/>
team tallied 221 rushing yards.<lb/>
Receiver Reggie Brown hauled<lb/>

Florida State (7-4) Vs. No.<lb/>
S Virginia Tech (10-1)<lb/>
Season review<lb/>
This season has been a disap-<lb/>
pointment for Seminoles' legend-<lb/>
ary coach Bobby Bowden. His<lb/>
team has suffered three consecu-<lb/>
tive losses to N.C. State, Clemson<lb/>
and Florida heading into this<lb/>
matchup and the offense is way<lb/>
out of sync. The usual suffocating<lb/>
defense has also been missing in<lb/>
action this season, giving up 21.6<lb/>
points per game.<lb/>
Barring a 27-7 loss to Miami,<lb/>
Virginia Tech has been arguably<lb/>
the most dominant team in the<lb/>
country this season. The Hokies'<lb/>
defense is giving up just over 10<lb/>
points per game and other than<lb/>
Miami, no team has scored more<lb/>
than two touchdowns against<lb/>
them.<lb/>
Last meeting<lb/>
FSU last met the Hokies on Jan.<lb/>
1, 2002, In the Gator Bowl, win-<lb/>
ning that matchup 30-17. Semi-<lb/>
noles' Head Coach Bobby Bowden<lb/>
has never lost to Virginia Tech.<lb/>
Prediction<lb/>
FSU could give quarterback<lb/>
Marcus Vick some headaches<lb/>
with their team speed on defense<lb/>
and I don't think freshman<lb/>
quarterback Drew Weatherford is<lb/>
mature enough to lead his team<lb/>
to a win on this stage against<lb/>
Virginia Tech. This game should<lb/>
be close throughout, but look<lb/>
for the Hokies to pull away late<lb/>
for a win.<lb/>

Cherl Mills scorched the Aggies with a career-high 36 points.<lb/>
Lady Pirates claim<lb/>
another early road<lb/>
victory, 74-71<lb/>
(SID) The ECU women's<lb/>
basketball team continues to<lb/>
show that it can win on the road,<lb/>
following a tightly contested 74-<lb/>
71 victory over N.C. A&T at the<lb/>
Corbett Sports Center Tuesday<lb/>
night. The win precedes the<lb/>
CPWAtavola Lady Pirate Invita-<lb/>
tional which will take place on<lb/>
Saturday and Sunday at Minges<lb/>
Coliseum in Greenville.<lb/>
Cherie Mills had a breakout<lb/>
performance leading all scorers<lb/>
with 36 points and grabbing<lb/>
eight rebounds in the victory.<lb/>
She is now sandwiched between<lb/>
Jennifer Jackson who scored 31<lb/>
points (Nov. 13, 2004 vs. Louis-<lb/>
ville) and Danielle Melvin, who<lb/>
scored 39 points against Rich-<lb/>
mond (March 5, 1999) as the last<lb/>
three players to score between 30<lb/>
and 40 points for the program.<lb/>
The Lady Pirates (3-1) inside<lb/>
game, which manufactured 26<lb/>
points in the paint, proved to be<lb/>
the difference down the stretch<lb/>
as Mills scored 18 points in the<lb/>
second half.<lb/>
With ECU leading 64-59 at<lb/>
the 7:42 mark of the game, the<lb/>
Lady Aggies (0-4) knotted the<lb/>
contest with a 5-0 run over the<lb/>
next two minutes. Mills put the<lb/>
Pirates back on top, and a back-<lb/>
and forth contest over the final<lb/>
minutes, the lead was stretched<lb/>
to one following two clutch Jas-<lb/>
mine Young free-throws. Leading<lb/>
72-71, ECU turned up the heat<lb/>
on defense to force a turnover<lb/>
and subsequent foul by Shareka<lb/>
Glover. Unable to force a defen-<lb/>
sive foul, ECU closed out the<lb/>
game with a layup by Mills with<lb/>
one second remaining.<lb/>
Young matched Cherie Mills<lb/>
as the only Pirates player in<lb/>
double figures with 11 points.<lb/>
Eight other ECU players scored at<lb/>
least two points or more.<lb/>
"I am very excited to get out of<lb/>
here with a victory Head Coach<lb/>
Sharon Baldwin-Tener said.<lb/>
"Our young players were<lb/>
able to handle the environment,<lb/>
because it is a great place to play<lb/>
basketball<lb/>
ECU led the Lady Aggies<lb/>
after one half of play 35-32,<lb/>
with center Cherie Mills lead-<lb/>
ing all scorers with an 18 point<lb/>
performance. The Lady Pirates<lb/>
dominated from the inside, scor-<lb/>
ing 22 points, while connecting<lb/>
on all three free throw attempts.<lb/>
Trailing by 10 points on two dif-<lb/>
ferent occasions, the Pirates went<lb/>
on a 10-0 run at the 8:20 mark<lb/>
of the contest to tie the game at<lb/>
25-25 with 5:44 remaining in the<lb/>
half. A tight game over the fol-<lb/>
lowing minutes, ECU assumed a<lb/>
four point lead at 34-30 with 2:06<lb/>
left and would take a three-point<lb/>
advantage into the half.<lb/>
Relievers fetching big bucks on MLB free-agent market<lb/>
Wagner<lb/>
(AP) Now that Billy Wagner<lb/>
Is the New York Mets' closer and<lb/>
Bobby Howry is a setup man for<lb/>
the Chicago Cubs, a handful of<lb/>
attractive relief pitchers remain<lb/>
on the free-agent market.<lb/>
it sure looks as though they'll<lb/>
cost big bucks.<lb/>
With so many teams trying<lb/>
to upgrade their bullpens, prices<lb/>
are soaring for reliable reliev-<lb/>
ers. And the New York Yankees<lb/>
haven't even signed one yet<lb/>
though they've intensified talks<lb/>
with Kyle Farnsworth and Tom<lb/>
Gordon.<lb/>
The Yankees and Farnsworth<lb/>
have been talking about a two-<lb/>
or three-year deal averaging<lb/>
$4.5 million to $6 million, a<lb/>
high-ranking baseball offi-<lb/>
cial said Tuesday, speaking on<lb/>
condition of anonymity because<lb/>
the negotiations were ongoing.<lb/>
Gordon, who spent the past<lb/>
two seasons as Mariano Rivera's<lb/>
primary setup man in New York,<lb/>
has been seeking a three-year<lb/>
contract. His agent also has been<lb/>
talking with the Indians and<lb/>
Phillies, who are looking for a<lb/>
closer to replace Wagner.<lb/>
"1 don't think internally that<lb/>
we have the key to solve the situ-<lb/>
ation new Philadelphia general<lb/>
manager Pat Gillick said. "We'll<lb/>
have to go outside the organiza-<lb/>
tion<lb/>
The Phillies did find an<lb/>
infielder Tuesday, agreeing with<lb/>
Abraham Nunez on a $3.35<lb/>
million, two-year contract that<lb/>
includes a club option for 2008<lb/>
and performance bonuses.<lb/>
Other relievers available<lb/>
include Trevor Hoffman, Bob<lb/>
Wickman, Todd Jones, Octavio<lb/>
Dotel and Jose Mesa. They all<lb/>
must be smiling about the $47<lb/>
million, five-year deal closer B.J.<lb/>
Ryan finalized with Toronto this<lb/>
week, the richest total ever for a<lb/>
reliever.<lb/>
No wonder general manager<lb/>
Omar Minaya and the Mets were<lb/>
so eager to get Wagner off the<lb/>
market, even at a cost of $43 mil-<lb/>
lion over four years.<lb/>
"When the B.J. Ryan thing<lb/>
came down and the fifth year was<lb/>
given, I knew that the teams that<lb/>
lost on B.J. were going to be in<lb/>
on Wagner, and that was exactly<lb/>
what happened Minaya said. "I<lb/>
felt that, look, let's try to get this<lb/>
done sooner rather than later<lb/>
Wagner, a four-time All-Star<lb/>
who saved 38 games for Phila-<lb/>
delphia last season with a 1.51<lb/>
ERA, got a no-trade clause from<lb/>
the Mets, which he said was very<lb/>
important. The deal includes a<lb/>
club option for 2010 that could<lb/>
raise the value to $50 million<lb/>
over five seasons.<lb/>
"It seemed like all roads kind<lb/>
of led to New York Wagner saic<lb/>
after slipping on his new No. 12<lb/>
Mets jersey at a Shea Stadiurr<lb/>
news conference. "I think it wa:<lb/>
always the Mets' ball to lose<lb/>
His agreement has a $10.75<lb/>
million average salary, topping<lb/>
Rivera's $10.5 million as the high<lb/>
est for a reliever. Wagner, who ha-<lb/>
284 career saves, takes over as tht<lb/>
Mets' closer from Braden Looper<lb/>
another free agent.<lb/>

Williams' view from the sideline this season couldn't be much different<lb/>
(AP) The last time most<lb/>
of the nation saw Roy Williams,<lb/>
he was walking slowly up the<lb/>
sideline, adjusting his eyeglasses<lb/>
to make sure he was reading the<lb/>
scoreboard correctly.<lb/>
This was just before the long-<lb/>
suffering coach waded into the<lb/>
middle of North Carolina's cham-<lb/>
pionship celebration and a half-<lb/>
dozen bear hugs from kids who<lb/>
eventually left for the NBA rather<lb/>
than stick around to help him<lb/>
defend it.<lb/>
Williams got to use those<lb/>
glasses again Tuesday, against<lb/>
the Illinois team he beat nearly<lb/>
I<lb/>
nine months earlier to finally<lb/>
nail down that elusive champi-<lb/>
onship.<lb/>
He professed to be pleased by<lb/>
plenty of what he saw. Of course,<lb/>
saying anything else this early<lb/>
in the rebuilding process would<lb/>
have been asking for serious trou-<lb/>
ble. And nobody knows how that<lb/>
works better than Williams.<lb/>
He began this season as the<lb/>
answer to a trivia question: Who<lb/>
was the coach of the last college<lb/>
basketball team to go unranked<lb/>
the season after winning it all?<lb/>
Williams took over at Kansas<lb/>
following Larry Brown's 1988<lb/>
title run with Danny Manning<lb/>
and the so-called Miracles. And<lb/>
besides being hamstrung by the<lb/>
penalties Brown left in his wake,<lb/>
he had to put together a respect-<lb/>
able product fast from a lot of<lb/>
spare parts.<lb/>
So Williams knows this could<lb/>
be the shortest championship<lb/>
celebration ever. Just as he knows<lb/>
patience among the North Caro-<lb/>
lina faithful, even in the after-<lb/>
glow, won't last any longer than<lb/>
it did at Kansas. But first, he has<lb/>
to get his own kids to buy into<lb/>
the plan.<lb/>
"I'm really proud of my team<lb/>
Williams said after the Illinl got a<lb/>
small measure of revenge with a<lb/>
68-64 win Tuesday night in the<lb/>
ACCBig Ten Challenge.<lb/>
"They were down 13 or so<lb/>
and they kept playing and trying<lb/>
to make plays. I told them that<lb/>
they played harder and better<lb/>
than I coached. And I apologized<lb/>
to them for that he added.<lb/>
"I looked out there a couple<lb/>
times and we had four freshmen<lb/>
and somebody else out on the<lb/>
court<lb/>
The Tar Heels actually trailed<lb/>
by 14 before a 12-0 run engi-<lb/>
neered by the freshman quartet<lb/>
.<lb/>
of Tyler Hansbrough, Marcus Gin-<lb/>
yard, Bobby Frasor and Danny<lb/>
Green brought North Carolina<lb/>
back within 64-62. That's when<lb/>
Illinois' slight edge in experience<lb/>
proved telling.<lb/>
Redshirt sophomore Brian<lb/>
Randle countered with a layup<lb/>
and a moment later, grabbed a<lb/>
big rebound off a missed free<lb/>
throw. Then, guard Dee Brown,<lb/>
a star in last season's tourna-<lb/>
ment who would have joined<lb/>
teammates Deron Williams and<lb/>
Luther Head at the next level if<lb/>

T.J. more than Chad's sidekick<lb/>
Houshmandzadeh has been an integral part of the potent Bengals' offense and their 8-3 record.<lb/>
(AP) T.J. Houshmandza-<lb/>
deh beamed as he reached out<lb/>
and accepted the scuffed white<lb/>
cleats with black trim and purple<lb/>
padding.<lb/>
An attendant was delivering<lb/>
the gift he had requested from<lb/>
Deion Sanders.<lb/>
"Deion's my favorite player<lb/>
of all time the Cincinnati Ben-<lb/>
gals receiver said. "He started all<lb/>
the flamboyancy in football. He<lb/>
brought charisma to the game.<lb/>
He set the trends that guys do<lb/>
now<lb/>
While Houshmandzadeh<lb/>
turned the cleats upside down,<lb/>
examining the gift from his<lb/>
famous friend in detail, receiver<lb/>
Chadjohnson dressed quietly at<lb/>
a neighboring locker. Together,<lb/>
they had just played the biggest<lb/>
role in sending Deion's Baltimore<lb/>
Ravens to a 42-29 loss.<lb/>
They couldn't be more differ-<lb/>
ent T.J. and Chad, that is.<lb/>
Johnson makes the national<lb/>
highlights with his bold state-<lb/>
ments, big touchdowns and<lb/>
choreographed celebrations<lb/>
that would do Deion proud.<lb/>
Houshmandzadeh makes his<lb/>
big catches without fanfare, the<lb/>
way players did before Deion<lb/>
came along.<lb/>
Different, yet indispensable.<lb/>
The Bengals (8-3) are in first<lb/>
place in the AFC North because<lb/>
opponents haven't been able to<lb/>
stop both of them. Johnson has<lb/>
66 catches for 1,085 yards, hurt-<lb/>
ing defenses with his speed and<lb/>
athleticism. Houshmandzadeh<lb/>
has 51 catches for 655 yards,<lb/>
making the tough receptions<lb/>
with his sure hands.<lb/>
"They're both unique quar-<lb/>
terback Carson Palmer said.<lb/>
"They do completely different<lb/>
things well and complement<lb/>
each other perfectly. T.Js a<lb/>
physical guy, a physical blocker,<lb/>
physical when he gets the ball.<lb/>
He's like Hines Ward. And Chad,<lb/>
he's just physically a freak. He's<lb/>
so much faster than anybody<lb/>
else and so much quicker and<lb/>
explosive<lb/>
Their temperaments are very<lb/>
different, too.<lb/>
Earlier this season, Johnson<lb/>
tried to get Houshmandzadeh<lb/>
to join him in having fun talk-<lb/>

ing games. Houshmandzadeh<lb/>
politely declined he's not into<lb/>

last season and held batters to a<lb/>
.191 average.<lb/>
Chicago also added left-<lb/>
hander Scott Eyre to its bullpen<lb/>
this offseason, and now the Cubs<lb/>
would like to sign free-agent<lb/>
shortstop Rafael Furcal, a speedy<lb/>
leadoff hitter.<lb/>
"If he chooses to stay in<lb/>
Atlanta, obviously nobody could<lb/>
fault him for that general<lb/>
managerjim llendry said. "I just<lb/>

Free-agent starter Paul Byrd<lb/>

are still searching for a closer<lb/>
and have been reluctant to throw<lb/>
big money at any pitcher this<lb/>
offseason.<lb/>
Cal Eldred, who came back<lb/>
from serious injury and illness<lb/>
in the last three seasons to<lb/>
pitch for St. Louis, has decided<lb/>
to retire.<lb/>
Nunez started 77 games at<lb/>
third base for St. Louis last season<lb/>
and hit .285 with five homers<lb/>
and44RBIsin 139 games overall.<lb/>
He probably will platoon at third<lb/>

"As long as we keep compet-<lb/>
ing as hard as we are and get<lb/>
better - we've got to execute<lb/>
better, we've got to get better<lb/>
defensively - we're going to be<lb/>
OK Williams said. "We're going<lb/>
to be OK<lb/>
Then again, he doesn't have a<lb/>
choice. Such is the state of college<lb/>
basketball these days - lonelier<lb/>
than ever at the top and tougher<lb/>
to stay there as the game gets<lb/>
younger and younger.<lb/>
Williams lost his top seven<lb/>
scorers and the four biggest stars<lb/>
ofl hi, championship team to the<lb/>
NBA, their quality measured by<lb/>
the fact that all four were among<lb/>
the first 14 picks in this summer's<lb/>
draft. But he gets little sympathy,<lb/>
and expects even less.<lb/>
Before the season began,<lb/>
Williams talked about how<lb/>
much he enjoyed teaching again.<lb/>
But now that the games have<lb/>
begun in earnest, he's just as<lb/>
likely to complain about having<lb/>
to teach the same lessons over<lb/>
and over. Williams is determined<lb/>
to play the same up-tempo style<lb/>
that has him closing in on SOO<lb/>
wins in his 18th season, even<lb/>
knowing that the deeper he dips<lb/>
into his bench to buy a breather<lb/>
for his starters, the more he risks<lb/>
letting the game get away from<lb/>
him.<lb/>
It's a calculated gamble that<lb/>
would turn Williams' hair white<lb/>
if it wasn't already. He's got a<lb/>
tough conference schedule wait-<lb/>
ing, with a seasoned, talented<lb/>
and top-ranked Duke team on<lb/>
one side of him and a surging<lb/>
North Carolina State team on the<lb/>
other - in the most basketball-<lb/>
mad state in the country.<lb/>
"Can I make the NCAA<lb/>
tournament with this team?"<lb/>
Williams said in a preseason<lb/>
interview. "I have no idea, but<lb/>
we're going to try like crazy. If<lb/>
you look at it on paper and add<lb/>
up our numbers compared to<lb/>
everybody else, it's not real good,<lb/>
let's be honest<lb/>
Williams has reinforcements<lb/>
on the way, a recruiting class<lb/>
with a half-dozen prospects so<lb/>
good that some already think<lb/>
Michigan's famous "Fab Five'<lb/>
may be unseated as the best<lb/>
ever. But that's a year away. In<lb/>
the meantime, Williams is look-<lb/>
ing for help anywhere he can<lb/>
find it.<lb/>
"Coach Williams, he really<lb/>
got intense. When we were<lb/>
coming out of huddles, he got<lb/>
into a stance, growling recalled<lb/>
Frasor. "He was in our face<lb/>
making us believe that we could<lb/>
win this game if we just play hard<lb/>
every possession<lb/>
Get used to that scowl.<lb/>
Chances are we'll be seeing it a<lb/>
lot this season.<lb/>
MOTB from page B5<lb/>
shtick.<lb/>
"That's not me he said.<lb/>
At one time, it was. As a<lb/>
player at Cerritos Junior College<lb/>
in California, he was as much of<lb/>
a showoff as any of them.<lb/>
"I'd be outrageous, going up<lb/>
into the stands, going to the con-<lb/>
cession stand and getting a hot<lb/>
dog Houshmandzadeh said.<lb/>
The coaches told him to stop,<lb/>
so he did. He stayed low-key<lb/>
when he moved to Oregon State,<lb/>
where he first became Johnson's<lb/>
teammate. Both came to Cincin-<lb/>
nati in the 2001 draft Johnson in<lb/>
the second round, Houshman-<lb/>
dzadeh in the seventh.<lb/>
When Peter Warrick got hurt<lb/>
last season, Houshmandzadeh<lb/>
got his chance and again formed<lb/>
a tandem with Johnson. Sud-<lb/>
denly, Houshmandzadeh was<lb/>
known for more than his long<lb/>
last name and his long, curly<lb/>
mane.<lb/>
He's a proven No. 2 receiver<lb/>
who considers himself much<lb/>
more. In his opinion, he's just<lb/>
as good as his college buddy, and<lb/>
maybe better.<lb/>
"If you think any other way,<lb/>
you have a problem Housh-<lb/>
mandzadeh said. "It's a compe-<lb/>
tition with each other on the<lb/>
team. He knows how I feel about<lb/>
his game, how I respect his game.<lb/>
But for me to say he's better than<lb/>
me<lb/>
He stopped without saying<lb/>
it.<lb/>
"They compete over who's<lb/>
going to have a better game<lb/>
Palmer said. "You can't ask for<lb/>
more than that as a quarterback.<lb/>
You've got one guy who wants to<lb/>
play better than the best receiver<lb/>
in the league. That's a tough<lb/>
combination to defend<lb/>
When defenses double- and<lb/>
triple-team Johnson, Palmer<lb/>
looks to Houshmandzadeh.<lb/>
That's what happened Sunday,<lb/>
when Sanders and the other<lb/>
Ravens defensive backs made<lb/>
sure Johnson wouldn't have a<lb/>
sensational game.<lb/>
Johnson was good five<lb/>
catches for 88 yards. Houshman-<lb/>
dzadeh was sensational, getting<lb/>
147 yards on nine catches.<lb/>
"They took Chad away<lb/>
Palmer said. "They didn't think<lb/>
T.J. could beat them. He took<lb/>
every one of their corners out of<lb/>
the game<lb/>
Houshmandzadeh even<lb/>
talked a little trash to corner-<lb/>
back Chris McAlister and spiked<lb/>
the ball at his feet after a sideline<lb/>
catch.<lb/>
"He started talking trash<lb/>
and that got me into the game<lb/>
Houshmandzadeh said, getting<lb/>
animated as he remembered<lb/>
the moment. "I was ready to go.<lb/>
They've got all the high-priced<lb/>
corners there, so let 'em (line) up<lb/>
and let's go<lb/>
Chad and Deion would be<lb/>
proud.<lb/>
