Asian Studies lecture<lb/>
focuses on combining<lb/>
virtues of hermit, samurai<lb/>
Heine applies Zen<lb/>
stratagem to modern day<lb/>
workplaces<lb/>
SCOTT EATON<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
The annual lecture in Asian<lb/>
studies focusing on Zen Buddhism<lb/>
and the modern-day workplace<lb/>
was held in the Science and Tech-<lb/>
nology Building Wednesday with<lb/>
more than 60 students and faculty<lb/>
members in attendance after a pre-<lb/>
vious cancellation in October.<lb/>
The lecture featured research<lb/>
done by Steven Heine, Florida<lb/>
International University Religious<lb/>
Studies professor and author of<lb/>
"White Collar Zen: Using Zen<lb/>
Principles to Overcome Obstacles<lb/>
and Achieve Your Career Goals<lb/>
and emphasized the idea of build-<lb/>
ing up one's skills where they can<lb/>
be highlighted in any situation.<lb/>
"Some people have a special<lb/>
skill where they can rise to the<lb/>
occasion at the moment their skills<lb/>
are needed most said Heine.<lb/>
Heine's new book describes<lb/>
the relationship between Zen and<lb/>
contemporary workplaces.<lb/>
"I wanted to reach out and<lb/>
write a book that deals with these<lb/>
issues and relate it to the modern<lb/>
era Heine said.<lb/>

produces a classic at<lb/>
McGinnis Theatre<lb/>
RACHEL KING<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
From Thursday, Nov. 17 to<lb/>
Tuesday, Nov. 22, students and<lb/>
the public will be able to enjoy<lb/>
the latest production from ECU<lb/>
l.oessin Playhouse, The Impor-<lb/>
tance of Being Earnest.<lb/>
The play, originally performed<lb/>
in 1895, is famous for its "penetrat-<lb/>
ing" humor and "insightful" look<lb/>
into society. The story centers<lb/>
around two friends who invent<lb/>
fictitious characters to use as alibis<lb/>
for times they need to get away<lb/>
from their daily lives. In doing so,<lb/>
they each form an alternate life<lb/>
unbeknownst to everyone else.<lb/>
All goes well until they fall in love.<lb/>
The confusion then ensues as the<lb/>
men struggle to keep up their lies<lb/>
and the women they love.<lb/>
"It's a very witty play said<lb/>
Jeff Woodruff, managing direc-<lb/>
tor of the School of Theatre<lb/>
and Dance.<lb/>
"It's also laugh-out-loud<lb/>
funny and not all plays are. It's a<lb/>
great show<lb/>
The show will begin every night<lb/>
at 8 p.m with the exception of<lb/>
Sunday, which has a showing at 2<lb/>
p.m. Tickets are $12 at the door but<lb/>
may be purchased ahead of time at<lb/>
$12 for the general public, $10 for<lb/>
those age 65 and over, and $8 for<lb/>
everyone age 18 and under. Thanks<lb/>
to the ECU Student Government<lb/>
Association activity fees, all current<lb/>
ECU students may pay youth price<lb/>
for their tickets if purchased ahead<lb/>
of time. Patrons may purchase tickets<lb/>
by phone at 328-6829 or 1-800-ECU-<lb/>
ARTS. Tickets may also be purchased<lb/>
online at ecuarts.com or in person<lb/>
at the McGinnis Theatre Box Office<lb/>
Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.<lb/>
- 5 p.m. The box office hours on a<lb/>
show day are 9 a.m. to curtain.<lb/>
The show is Greg Funaro's<lb/>
main stage directorial debut.<lb/>
Funaro, who worked profession-<lb/>
ally as an actor in New York City<lb/>
and all over the U.S has per-<lb/>
formed in 11 plays at ECU, most<lb/>
notably, The Best Little Whore-<lb/>
house in Texas, Grease, As You Like<lb/>
It and Romeo and Juliet.<lb/>
"Greg's been teaching for<lb/>
some time now he's an excel-<lb/>
lent instructor Woodruff said.<lb/>
"We've got a lot of new people<lb/>
on this show<lb/>
Also involved in the produc-<lb/>
tion, in her second main stage<lb/>
production as scenic designer, is<lb/>
Jenny Parker. One of the things<lb/>
Woodruff acknowledges as special<lb/>
about ECU theatre productions is<lb/>
the environment of the theatre.<lb/>
"In a professional production,<lb/>
you may have two assistant stage<lb/>
managers Woodruff said,<lb/>
"But we're in a teaching envi-<lb/>
ronment. It's a constant learning<lb/>
process using a 'learning-by-<lb/>
doing method so we tend to<lb/>
involve a lot of people<lb/>
In the production of Earnest,<lb/>
for instance, there are actually<lb/>
four assistant stage managers<lb/>
instead of only two.<lb/>
"It's a very labor-intensive<lb/>
business Typically, produc-<lb/>
tion starts six weeks before show<lb/>
time Woodruff said.<lb/>
"We had auditions around Sept.<lb/>
24. Then, the following Monday, they<lb/>
start work Luckily, Earnest's staff<lb/>
and cast had almost eight weeks to<lb/>
prepare. The play, written by Oscar<lb/>
Wilde, has historically had many<lb/>
successful runs since 1895. When it<lb/>
opened for the first time, it ran for<lb/>
86 performances. By the time The<lb/>
Importance of Being Earnest reached<lb/>
St. James Theatre, Wilde was also<lb/>
known for the novel "Dorian Gray"<lb/>
(1890) and the plays Lady Winder-<lb/>
mere's Fan (1892) andI WomanofNo<lb/>
Importance (1893). Wilde also wrote a<lb/>
handful of literary criticisms and fairy<lb/>
tales before his death in Paris in 1900.<lb/>

Heine discussed Zen philosophy in front of more than 60 students.<lb/>
a way of life but never fully<lb/>
adopted in one's life), Classical<lb/>
Zen (an academic approach to<lb/>
Zen) and Square Zen (practitio-<lb/>
ners of Zen without the proper<lb/>
historical context).<lb/>
Heine described the seem-<lb/>
ingly opposite archetypes of sam-<lb/>
urai, who act on the battlefield,<lb/>
and Hermits, who withdraw from<lb/>
society through meditation.<lb/>
"These two archetypes are<lb/>
not necessarily opposed to the<lb/>
other they can work complimen-<lb/>
tary to the other he said.<lb/>
The Samurai philosophy<lb/>
about the "Art of War" involves<lb/>
the "Art of Cunning in which<lb/>
overcoming fear of death or<lb/>
loss, striving for alertness and<lb/>
attentiveness and maximizing<lb/>
strength and reducing vulner-<lb/>
ability are the main goals.<lb/>
"The image of the Samurai has<lb/>
become a worldwide phenomenon<lb/>
with the idea appearing in movies<lb/>
such as The Magnificent Seven and<lb/>
The Shootist Heine said.<lb/>
The Hermit philosophy<lb/>
involves a withdrawal from<lb/>
society to discover tranquility,<lb/>
simplicity and a harmonious<lb/>
existence with nature.<lb/>
Heine explained the ideas<lb/>
behind the structure of Zen<lb/>
monasteries and pointed out the<lb/>
idea of harmonious living with<lb/>
nature in the design of temples<lb/>
throughout Japan.<lb/>

NEW JERSEY: Democratic<lb/>
Sen. Jon Corzine easily beat<lb/>
Republican businessman Doug<lb/>
Forrester after a sharply nega-<lb/>
tive campaign to succeed acting<lb/>
Democratic Gov. Richard J.<lb/>
Codey. The multimillionaires<lb/>
spent $70 million, more than<lb/>
double the previous record for a<lb/>
New Jersey governor's race.<lb/>
VIRGINIA: Democratic<lb/>

defeated Republican Jerry<lb/>
Kilgore, a former attorney gen-<lb/>
eral, in a closely watched contest<lb/>
to succeed popular Democratic<lb/>
Gov. Mark Warner.<lb/>
MAYORS:<lb/>
ATLANTA: The city's first<lb/>
female mayor, Shirley Franklin,<lb/>
trounced two little-known chal-<lb/>
lengers to win a second term.<lb/>
BOSTON: Three-term<lb/>
Mayor Thomas Menino, known<lb/>
as "Mumbles" for his fractured<lb/>
diction, fended off a challenge<lb/>
from longtime City Council-<lb/>
woman Maura Hennigan.<lb/>
CHICOPEE, Mass Attor-<lb/>
ney Michael Bissonnette easily<lb/>
defeated Mayor Richard Goy-<lb/>
ette, who was charged with<lb/>
extorting campaign contribu-<lb/>
tions from two businessmen.<lb/>
Goyette dropped out of the race<lb/>
a week ago - too late to remove<lb/>
his name from the ballot.<lb/>
CINCINNATI: State Rep.<lb/>
Mark Mallory, who is black and a<lb/>
member of a prominent political<lb/>
family, beat white City Council-<lb/>
man David Pepper four years<lb/>
after race riots tore apart the city.<lb/>
CLEVELAND: Popular<lb/>
City Council President Frank<lb/>
Jackson, whose hard-luck life<lb/>
growing up in the nation's<lb/>
12th-poorest city endeared him<lb/>
to voters, edged out incumbent<lb/>
Jane Campbell, the first woman<lb/>
to lead Cleveland.<lb/>
DETROIT: Mayor Kwame<lb/>
Kilpatrick overcame doubts<lb/>
about his leadership and judg-<lb/>
ment as voters gave him the<lb/>
second chance he asked for in a<lb/>
come-from-behlnd victory.<lb/>
HOUSTON: Mayor Bill<lb/>
White was re-elected with 91<lb/>
percent of the vote, his popu-<lb/>

measures to protect residents<lb/>
from Hurricane Rita.<lb/>
MINNEAPOLIS: Mayor<lb/>
R.T. Rybak won a second term<lb/>
despite a challenge from fellow<lb/>
Democrat Peter McLaughlin,<lb/>
a county commissioner and<lb/>
union favorite who accused<lb/>
Rybak of failing to protect the<lb/>
city's poorer neighborhoods.<lb/>
NEW YORK CITY: Billion-<lb/>
aire Republican Mayor Michael<lb/>
Bloomberg routed former Bronx<lb/>
Borough President Fernando<lb/>
Ferrer in this heavily Demo-<lb/>
cratic city and was on pace<lb/>
to surpass his 2001 spending<lb/>
record of $74 million.<lb/>
PITTSBURGH: Former City<lb/>
Councilman Bob O'Connor, a<lb/>
Democrat, defeated GOP lawyer<lb/>
Joe Weinroth in a city that has<lb/>
not elected a Republican mayor<lb/>
since the Depression. Incum-<lb/>
bent Tom Murphy decided not<lb/>
to seek a fourth term.<lb/>
SEATTLE: Mayor Greg<lb/>
Nickels cruised to a second term.<lb/>
Although Nickels' critics accused<lb/>
him of heavy-handed leadership<lb/>
and disregarding neighborhood<lb/>
concerns in favor of property<lb/>
developers, they were unable to<lb/>
recruit a high-profile challenger,<lb/>
settling on former professor<lb/>
Al Runte.<lb/>
ST. PAUL, Minn Randy<lb/>
Kelly was voted out after one<lb/>
term in this heavily Democratic<lb/>
city, largely because he endorsed<lb/>

City Council member, had led<lb/>
2-to-l in polls; most voters said<lb/>
they wanted to punish Kelly.<lb/>

Jerry Sanders, a former police<lb/>
chief backed by the city's busi-<lb/>
ness establishment, handily<lb/>
defeated Donna Frye, a maver-<lb/>
ick Democratic councilwoman<lb/>
and surf-shop owner. Sanders<lb/>
inherits a $1.37-billion pension<lb/>
shortfall that has led to a federal<lb/>
investigation and threatened<lb/>
the city with bankruptcy.<lb/>
CITY COUNCILS:<lb/>
DETROIT: Motown singer<lb/>
Martha Reeves was eighth out<lb/>
of 18 candidates vying for nine<lb/>
seats on the Detroit City Council<lb/>

Prescott City Council. Mechanic<lb/>
went to prison for his part in a<lb/>
Vietnam War protest and served<lb/>
nearly a year before he was par-<lb/>
doned by President Clinton.<lb/>
SCHOOL BOARD:<lb/>

eight GOP school board mem-<lb/>

After President Bush's fellow<lb/>

resounding conservative support<lb/>
for his nomination of Samuel Alito<lb/>
to replace the retiring Sandra Day<lb/>

Court. Alito is considered to be<lb/>
very conservative in the mold of<lb/>
Supreme Court Justices Clarence<lb/>

Bush touts as model justices.<lb/>
Miers was called into question<lb/>
about her credentials and conser-<lb/>

replied to the Republican critics<lb/>
that Miers was sufficiently con-<lb/>
servative, citing her service and<lb/>
conservations with Bush. When<lb/>
the Senate asked to examine<lb/>
her record regarding her White<lb/>

Children from 41 area schools and<lb/>
home-schooled youth in The Arts<lb/>
Experience Children's Choirs and<lb/>
Youth Oratorio do more than sing<lb/>
their hearts out - they learn to sight-<lb/>
read music.<lb/>
Each member auditions to participate<lb/>
and is placed in one of the three<lb/>
choirs melody, concert or youth<lb/>
oratorio according to age and<lb/>
ability level.<lb/>
The choirs rehearse every Tuesday<lb/>
night at Saint James Lutheran<lb/>
Church.<lb/>
According to The Arts Experience<lb/>
executive director Quincy Foil,<lb/>
the choirs provide an affordable<lb/>
opportunity for singing and technical<lb/>
music instruction and to promote<lb/>
self-confidence and appreciation for<lb/>
musical diversity.<lb/>
Foil founded the choir in 1995 after<lb/>
many parents of children in her piano<lb/>
classes asked her where to find local<lb/>
voice teachers.<lb/>
There was a need for children in<lb/>
this area for excellent vocal training<lb/>
Foil said.<lb/>
The beauty of the program is that<lb/>
kids move up through the years in<lb/>
age and ability, so there are great<lb/>
opportunities for gifted children to<lb/>
expand their natural talents<lb/>
According to Foil, one-third of students<lb/>
in the choirs participate with tuition<lb/>
assistance from local Individuals<lb/>
and sponsors.<lb/>
"Money should never be a barrier for<lb/>
a child to participate in the arts Foil<lb/>
said. "We have never turned down<lb/>

Microsoft's Gates said Internet-<lb/>
based services represent major<lb/>
'sea change'<lb/>
SEATTLE (AP) - Microsoft Chairman Bill<lb/>
Gates wants his managers to "act quickly<lb/>
and decisively" to offer more Internet-<lb/>
based software and services so the<lb/>
computer giant can beat its competition.<lb/>
Gates compares the push toward<lb/>
such services ranging from online<lb/>
business software offerings to free<lb/>
Web-based e-mail to the changes<lb/>
he saw nearly a decade ago. Then,<lb/>
he wrote a now-famous memo,<lb/>
called The Internet Tidal Wave that<lb/>
prompted a massive shift at Microsoft<lb/>
toward Internet-based technology.<lb/>
"The next sea change is upon<lb/>
us Gates wrote in an e-mail to<lb/>
top executives, dated Oct. 30 and<lb/>
obtained late Tuesday by The<lb/>
Associated Press.<lb/>
Gates also warned the company<lb/>
must be thoughtful in building the<lb/>
right technology to serve the right<lb/>
audience.<lb/>
This coming 'services wave' will be<lb/>
very disruptive he wrote. "We have<lb/>
competitors who will seize on these<lb/>
approaches and challenge us still, the<lb/>
opportunity to lead is very clear"<lb/>
Gates included a memo from Ray<lb/>
Ozzie, one of Microsoft's three chief<lb/>
technical officers, which outlined ideas<lb/>
for broad companywlde changes<lb/>
that can address the growing<lb/>
competitive threat.<lb/>
Ozzie concedes in the memo dated<lb/>
Oct. 28 that Microsoft has not led<lb/>
the pack on Internet-based software<lb/>
and services, and now faces intense<lb/>
competition from companies like<lb/>
Google Inc. Ozzie said Microsoft needs<lb/>
to focus on key tenets of the new<lb/>
model, including a shift toward offering<lb/>
free, advertising-supported offerings<lb/>
and more sophisticated, Internet-based<lb/>
methods of delivering products.<lb/>
"I believe at this juncture it's generally<lb/>
very clear to each of us why we need<lb/>
to transform the competitors, the<lb/>
challenges and the opportunities<lb/>
Ozzie wrote.<lb/>
Last week, Microsoft announced<lb/>
plans for Windows Live and Office<lb/>
Live, two Web-based offerings that<lb/>
aim to help the company compete<lb/>
with Google, Yahoo Inc Salesforce.<lb/>
com and other companies that are<lb/>
already seeing success with such<lb/>
Web-based offerings.<lb/>
Microsoft has recently faced criticism<lb/>
that its model, which still relies<lb/>
mostly on delivering software In<lb/>
traditional packaging, could grow<lb/>
antiquated. The concern is that, as<lb/>
more companies offer online services<lb/>
for everything from word processing<lb/>
to storing photos, there will be less<lb/>
of a need for Microsoft's lucrative<lb/>
Windows operating system and<lb/>
Office business software.<lb/>
Microsoft's nascent Windows Live<lb/>
and Office Live efforts aim to<lb/>
complement its valuable software<lb/>
franchises with online products that<lb/>
build on what people find on their<lb/>
desktop computers.<lb/>

Attack kills five policemen In<lb/>
Baquoba, U.S. Jets destroy<lb/>
building near Syria border<lb/>
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A suicide<lb/>
bomber detonated his car Wednesday<lb/>
near a police patrol in Baquoba, 35<lb/>
miles northeast of Baghdad, killing<lb/>
five policemen and wounding five<lb/>
others, officials said.<lb/>
U.S. Air Force jets destroyed a building<lb/>
near the Syrian border Wednesday<lb/>
where al-Qaida insurgents hid<lb/>
weapons, the U.S. military said.<lb/>
The attack occurred early in the day in<lb/>
the village of Bu Hardan near the cities<lb/>
of Qalm and Husaybah where U.S.<lb/>
and Iraqi troops conducted a major<lb/>
operation in the past four days.<lb/>
The terrorists were seen moving<lb/>
mortars and other small weapons into<lb/>
the targeted building the statement<lb/>
said. This weapons cache was<lb/>
directly linked to mortar attacks on<lb/>
Coalition and Iraqi security forces<lb/>
The statement said the raid destroyed<lb/>
the building and "all contents of the<lb/>
weapons cache<lb/>
Late Tuesday, the military announced<lb/>
that U.S. and Iraqi forces have secured<lb/>
the town of Husaybah and that al-<lb/>
Qaida-led insurgents there have been<lb/>
neutralized.<lb/>
Meanwhile, a driver for the Sudanese<lb/>
Embassy was shot dead Wednesday<lb/>
as he left the Palestinian mission In<lb/>
the Iraqi capital, police and the Iraqi<lb/>
Foreign Ministry said.<lb/>
The shooting occurred in the<lb/>
Mansour area of western Baghdad,<lb/>
where gunmen have attacked foreign<lb/>
diplomats and businessmen in the<lb/>
past. The driver was a Sudanese<lb/>
citizen, police and the ministry said.<lb/>
Labeed Abbawi, an undersecretary<lb/>
in the Foreign Ministry, confirmed<lb/>
the report but did not know why the<lb/>
driver was at the Palestinian mission<lb/>
or whether he was the only person<lb/>
in the car.<lb/>
The attack followed the abduction<lb/>
last month of two employees of the<lb/>
Moroccan Embassy, who were seized<lb/>
on the highway between Baghdad<lb/>
and Amman, Jordan. Statements<lb/>
attributed to al-Qaida in Iraq claimed<lb/>
responsibility and said the two had<lb/>
been sentenced to death.<lb/>
Al-Qaida also claimed responsibility<lb/>
for the kidnap-slaying last July of three<lb/>
foreign diplomats - two Algerians and<lb/>
one Egyptian - as part of a campaign<lb/>
to cut ties between Muslim countries<lb/>
and the Shilte-dominated, U.S<lb/>
backed Iraqi government.<lb/>
In Baghdad, Ghanem Mohammed, an<lb/>
employee at the Education ministry,<lb/>
was killed when gunmen opened fire<lb/>
on his car as he was driving to work<lb/>
in west Baghdad, according to police<lb/>
Maj. Mousa Abdul-Karim.<lb/>
Also in Baghdad, gunmen opened fire<lb/>
on a minibus, killing its driver, police<lb/>
Capt Qassim Hussein said. A roadside<lb/>
bomb in the southern neighborhood<lb/>
of Dora killed a motorist and wounded<lb/>
another man, police said.<lb/>

Assist's technology, like Ware-<lb/>
house Alert's, works with a tran-<lb/>
sponder, usually a belt clip trans-<lb/>
mitter. Police could pinpoint the<lb/>
location of someone wearing the<lb/>
transmitter In a residence hall as<lb/>
well monitor their movements once<lb/>
the system has been activated.<lb/>
"Someone In the police station<lb/>
could look at a screen and see exactly<lb/>
where you are DuVall said.<lb/>
The other two projects also<lb/>
involve incorporating personal<lb/>
safety devices into student and<lb/>
faculty life in the battle against<lb/>
campus crime.<lb/>
DuVall hopes that North Carolina<lb/>
schools will share ideas and innova-<lb/>
tions to make the process of testing<lb/>
and researching safety technol-<lb/>
ogy more efficient and productive.<lb/>
"I think with 16 universities<lb/>
in the UNC system we can all<lb/>
work together to bring down<lb/>
costs DuVall said.<lb/>
The Technology Advance-<lb/>
ment Center's work is crucial to<lb/>
the success of the trials.<lb/>
"We find the area of need,<lb/>
find the technology needed<lb/>
to address it, and trying to get<lb/>
funding for the pilot programs<lb/>
so that their effectiveness can be<lb/>
determined DuVall said.<lb/>
The programs are all nothing<lb/>
more than pilots at this point, but<lb/>
the possibility Is open that the mea-<lb/>
sures could eventually be extended<lb/>
to the entire student population.<lb/>
"We're making progress, and<lb/>
we're going to keep pushing"<lb/>
DuVall said. "The campus is<lb/>
always working on personal<lb/>

ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONS WEEK is celebrated nationally to<lb/>
honor health care providers working in more than 80 allied<lb/>
health professions.<lb/>
Allied health professionals are an essential part of America's<lb/>
health care safety net. Because there is a critical shortage of<lb/>
health care providers-currently and predicted for years to<lb/>
come-there are many opportunities available for those<lb/>
looking for an allied health career.<lb/>

"White Collar Zen is the idea<lb/>
of bringing together the idea of<lb/>
samurai and hermit Heine said.<lb/>
By understanding when to<lb/>
use the skills of a samurai or<lb/>
hermit, one can learn to deal<lb/>
with stressful situations that arise<lb/>
in everyday life, Heine said.<lb/>
"I call the cause of most of<lb/>
our anxiety the 'promotion com-<lb/>
motion where mini crises arise,<lb/>
such as not getting what you want<lb/>
or having something unwanted<lb/>
thrust upon you he said.<lb/>
" It is precisely for these situations<lb/>
that you should hone your skills so<lb/>
you will know when you should let<lb/>
something pass or take action<lb/>
Heine said one must integrate<lb/>
the potential to speak and think<lb/>
without allowing emotions to<lb/>
take over, which takes time to<lb/>
develop.<lb/>
Through the use of the samu-<lb/>
rai philosophy of savvy, diplo-<lb/>
matic, poised and persuasive<lb/>
communication, one can achieve<lb/>
many things but words can only<lb/>
go so far, Heine said.<lb/>
By learning the philosophy<lb/>
of the Hermit, one will learn<lb/>
sometimes silence is golden and<lb/>
there are times when it's best to<lb/>
sit back and take a bird's eye view<lb/>
of the situation.<lb/>
"Zen masters express a sense<lb/>
of irony and the absurd, knowing<lb/>
when to-and when not to-laugh<lb/>

Sports Studies degree<lb/>
attracting more students<lb/>
Degree can lead to<lb/>
careers in management<lb/>
or law<lb/>
SCOTT EATON<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
The new Bachelor of Sci-<lb/>
ence in Sports Studies is now<lb/>
being offered to students and is<lb/>
attracting more students as the<lb/>
program matures.<lb/>
At this time, there are five<lb/>
declared Sports Studies majors<lb/>
and 23 intended without much<lb/>
publicity about the program<lb/>
itself.<lb/>
"This degree is aimed at those<lb/>
who don't want to be teachers<lb/>
or exercise physiologists said<lb/>
Anthony Laker, sports studies<lb/>
and exercise science degree<lb/>
director.<lb/>
The new degree has been<lb/>
a few years in the making and<lb/>
covers a wider arena of sports<lb/>
studies than offered before. The<lb/>
time of inception of the idea<lb/>
to Implementing the program<lb/>
has taken 18 months and has<lb/>
involved the creation of other<lb/>
courses to meet the demands of<lb/>
the degree program.<lb/>
"We are finding that a $400<lb/>
billion industry can provide<lb/>
quite an attractive career choice<lb/>
Laker said.<lb/>
ECU is the only school in<lb/>
North Carolina to offer such a<lb/>
degree and very few others in<lb/>
the nation have a compatible<lb/>
program, as well, Laker said.<lb/>
"The bulk of the courses<lb/>
will come from inside the<lb/>
department, but we realize<lb/>
other departments offer similar<lb/>
courses that are of great use to a<lb/>
student of sports studies, such<lb/>
as communications and leisure<lb/>
studies Laker said.<lb/>
Students will be required<lb/>
to take courses involving sport<lb/>
sociology, sport psychology,<lb/>
international sport and sports<lb/>
media, as well as many other<lb/>
courses designed to meet the<lb/>
career aspirations of the stu-<lb/>
dents, Laker said.<lb/>
A requirement of the degree<lb/>
is that students must be involved<lb/>
in a sport.<lb/>
"They don't necessarily have<lb/>
to be involved in a college level<lb/>
competitive sport, but we require<lb/>
the students to pick any activity<lb/>
course to fulfill the require-<lb/>
ment he said.<lb/>
"It's important they do what<lb/>
they're studying<lb/>
There is also an independent<lb/>
study required, as well, to assimi-<lb/>
late everything the student has<lb/>
learned through the degree<lb/>
program.<lb/>
The degree can lead to a<lb/>
career in sports management,<lb/>
marketing, journalism, sports<lb/>
law and many other careers<lb/>
within the sports industry.<lb/>
"The business school has<lb/>
welcomed students hoping to<lb/>
attain a MBA with a concentra-<lb/>
tion in sports management<lb/>
said Stacey Altman, assistant<lb/>
professor of exercise and sports<lb/>
studies.<lb/>
"This degree program is also<lb/>
great for law schools, as well,<lb/>
because it contains an aspect of<lb/>
the humanities<lb/>
There is already an estab-<lb/>
lished graduate program for<lb/>
sports management, and Laker<lb/>
believes the BS will provide<lb/>
better preparation for students<lb/>
wishing to pursue their Master's<lb/>
in that area.<lb/>
The program has not added<lb/>
new faculty to the department,<lb/>
but with the growing interest in<lb/>
the program, it may be neces-<lb/>
sary, according to Laker.<lb/>
"If we get more students<lb/>
involved, we would need a larger<lb/>
faculty to handle the number of<lb/>
classes needed for the degree<lb/>
Laker said.<lb/>

Our View<lb/>
Holidays are coming,<lb/>
are you excited?<lb/>
The holidays are fast approaching and most of us<lb/>
havenl even begun to make our Christmas lists.<lb/>
The holidays can be a stressful time for all of us,<lb/>
especially when you doni know what to get every-<lb/>
one on your list Shopping for your loved ones<lb/>
should be an enjoyment not a chore. We here at<lb/>
TEC want to make your shopping endeavors this<lb/>
year the best yet Just follow our few simple steps<lb/>
and you'll have everyone on your list smiling with<lb/>
pleasure on Christmas morning.<lb/>
Create a budget and stick to it You should plan<lb/>
ahead of time how much you want to spend total.<lb/>
If you have a dependency on plastic, we suggest<lb/>
you leave the credit cards at home. Christmas is<lb/>
the prime time of year to go in debt Be sure to<lb/>
include packaging costs in that budget as well,<lb/>
such as wrapping paper, boxes and bows.<lb/>
Know who you're shopping for. Make sure when<lb/>
you're looking for gifts, you're keeping what your<lb/>
family and friends like in mind. You don't want to<lb/>
buy a gift you would like to have - you should buy<lb/>
something they would like to have. Gift certificates<lb/>
are becoming the hot holiday gift and are always<lb/>
a great idea. Your loved ones still know you care,<lb/>
but they get to shop and get exactly what they<lb/>
want<lb/>
Don't rule out small gifts. Sometimes less is more.<lb/>
It is the thought that counts. You shouldn't under-<lb/>
estimate the power of a homemade gift The best<lb/>
gifts come from the creative mind. Baskets are<lb/>
always a nice idea too. Putting together a lot of<lb/>
little things can make for a pretty big present at<lb/>
a reasonable cost.<lb/>
It might be helpful to map out a plan of where<lb/>
you want to shop. Wandering around aimlessly<lb/>
can be tiring and frustrating. You end up getting<lb/>
something just to be buying a gift and then you're<lb/>
stuck with a gift you don't want to give and a gift<lb/>
no one would want to receive.<lb/>
Online shopping is the way to go. Its fun, its fast<lb/>
and it's easy. There is no simpler way to buy gifts.<lb/>
You never have to leave the comfort of your home.<lb/>
The only glitch in the plan is you have to remem-<lb/>
ber to order your items early enough in the year<lb/>
to ensure you get your gifts by Christmas.<lb/>
We hope this has helped make the beginning<lb/>
of your holiday season a little easier. With all the<lb/>

Nine simple rules for being a better president<lb/>
Your daddy won't pay<lb/>
your way through my<lb/>
course, Bushy<lb/>
GARYMCCABE<lb/>
BITTER BOULEVARD<lb/>
Last November, the number<lb/>
one issue on voters' minds wasn't<lb/>
the war in Iraq. It wasn't the econ-<lb/>
omy. It wasn't even terrorism. It<lb/>
was moral values. I suppose when<lb/>
some terrorist finally sneaks in<lb/>
one of his dirty bombs and blows<lb/>
up a city, I should be comforted in<lb/>
knowing that President Bush isn't<lb/>
nailing one of his aides.<lb/>
However, that's beside the<lb/>
point. I'd much rather discuss the<lb/>
irony that surrounds the Republi-<lb/>
can Party right now. I mean - when<lb/>
you think about it - it's pretty<lb/>
funny. A lot of people supported<lb/>
Republicans last year because of<lb/>
their "moral values" and now look<lb/>
at them - a lot of the big names in<lb/>
the party are under investigation<lb/>
for immoral activities. Am I the<lb/>
only one who finds that funny?<lb/>
Let's start toward the bottom of<lb/>
the list and work our way up, shall<lb/>
we? Senate Majority Leader Bill<lb/>
Frist is currently getting the Martha<lb/>
Stewart treatment and is under<lb/>
investigation for insider trading.<lb/>
On the other side of Congress,<lb/>
U.S. House Majority Leader Tom<lb/>
Delay is accused of conspiracy and<lb/>
laundering $190,000 in corporate<lb/>
campaign contributions and is facing<lb/>
a possible life sentence. A life sentence<lb/>
Moving up the branch<lb/>
slightly, Lewis "Scooter" Libby,<lb/>
Vice President Dick Cheney's<lb/>
Chief of Staff, recently resigned<lb/>
following charges of perjury,<lb/>
obstruction of justice and making<lb/>
false statements in regards to the<lb/>
leak of a CIA agent's identity. The<lb/>
leaking of such information is a<lb/>
crime in and of itself.<lb/>
Both Cheney's and Deputy<lb/>
White House Chief of Staff Karl<lb/>
Rove's names have been consis-<lb/>
tently brought up since this identity<lb/>
leak story broke - many in the media<lb/>
expected indictments to come their<lb/>
way as well. In fact - worse case sce-<lb/>
nario, of course - if Libby is found<lb/>
guilty and is facing a long prison<lb/>
sentence, who knows what he might<lb/>
have to say about his bosses.<lb/>
Finally, we've moved all the<lb/>
way up to President Bush himself<lb/>
who, in a recent poll conducted<lb/>
by The Washington Post and CBS<lb/>
News, is believed to be dishon-<lb/>
est by 58 percent of Americans.<lb/>
Dishonesty is immoral, correct?<lb/>
And just to rub it in further, his<lb/>
approval rating has slipped to an<lb/>
all-time low, 35 percent.<lb/>
So it's back to school for the<lb/>
Bush administration. President<lb/>
Bush has required his executive<lb/>
office staff to attend "refresher<lb/>
courses" on ethics and handling<lb/>
classified materials. But I think<lb/>
the Bush administration needs a<lb/>
refresher course on far more than<lb/>
ethics. So that's why I've decided<lb/>
to use this space to outline nine<lb/>
things the administration should<lb/>
also study up on. 1 would greatly<lb/>
encourage President Bush to<lb/>
attend my course as well.<lb/>
The Declaration of Inde-<lb/>
pendence. In the ground break-<lb/>
ing document, founding father<lb/>
Thomas Jefferson included the<lb/>
line "We hold these truths to<lb/>
be self-evident, that all men are<lb/>
created equal It doesn't say "all<lb/>
straight men are created equal<lb/>
Somehow Bush has denigrated<lb/>
homosexuals to second-class citi-<lb/>
zens. He talks about freeing Iraqis<lb/>
while oppressing and denying<lb/>
homosexuals the right to marry<lb/>
like it affects him in any way. Why<lb/>
shouldn't they have the right to<lb/>
marry and love whom they choose<lb/>
and instead have to be ostracized<lb/>
by Bush's religious Right?<lb/>
The Andrew Jackson<lb/>
Administration. The spoils<lb/>
system didn't work too well for<lb/>
President Jackson, so why does<lb/>
Bush think his blatant cronyism<lb/>
will work now? You saw how well<lb/>
his buddy Michael Brown did as<lb/>
the director of FEMA after Hur-<lb/>
ricane Katrina. Harriet Miers was<lb/>
such a bad pick that his own party<lb/>
wouldn't support him. Either stop<lb/>
picking your friends for cushy<lb/>
jobs or make better friends.<lb/>
Edward Gibbon's The<lb/>
Decline and Fall of the<lb/>
Roman Empire. This would<lb/>
serve as a great example for<lb/>
the Bush administration for<lb/>
what happens when an empire<lb/>
stretches itself out too far. Who<lb/>
cares about imperialism? It's<lb/>
almost like Bush cares more<lb/>
about the countries we send our<lb/>
men and women to than the men<lb/>
and women we're sending.<lb/>
Webster's New Diction-<lb/>
ary's definition of the word<lb/>
"mandate "The wishes of<lb/>
constituents expressed to a rep-<lb/>
resentative legislature Bush<lb/>
received 51 percent of the vote<lb/>
last November. That means 49<lb/>
percent disagree with what he's<lb/>

In My Opinion<lb/>
(KRT) As soon as President<lb/>
Bush nominated Samuel Alitojr. to<lb/>
the Supreme Court, Americans were<lb/>
treated to the unlovely spectacle<lb/>
known as "borking This is a pro-<lb/>
cess by which a few bits of informa-<lb/>
tion about a judicial appointee are<lb/>
selectively culled from a lifetime<lb/>
of work, distorted for maximum<lb/>
dramatic effect and proclaimed as<lb/>
proof that he is horribly unfit for the<lb/>
post. And though it generally reveals<lb/>
more about the attackers than the<lb/>
attacked, it sometimes works. Ask<lb/>
Robert Bork, who was voted down<lb/>
by the Senate in 1987 after being<lb/>
portrayed as a cross between Lester<lb/>
Maddox and Cotton Mather.<lb/>
Liberal groups immediately<lb/>
denounced Allto as the enemy<lb/>
of civil liberties, reproductive<lb/>
freedom, workers' rights and<lb/>
racial equality. People for the<lb/>
American Way called him "an<lb/>
out-of-the-mainstream opponent<lb/>
of fundamental legal rights and<lb/>
protections for all Americans<lb/>
The Brady Campaign to Pre-<lb/>
vent Gun Violence dubbed him<lb/>
"Machine Gun Sammy<lb/>
But the effort to demonize<lb/>
Alito will be an arduous one.<lb/>
Unlike Bork, Alito has not spent<lb/>
years in academia, formulating<lb/>
grand theories and staking out<lb/>
provocative positions. Unlike<lb/>
Clarence Thomas, he can't be por-<lb/>
trayed as underqualified. Instead,<lb/>
he's a veteran appeals court judge<lb/>
who boasts sterling credentials.<lb/>
His failure to rescue himself from<lb/>
a case involving Vanguard, despite<lb/>
his investments in Vanguard<lb/>
funds, was a mistake, but it hardly<lb/>
looks like a disqualifying one.<lb/>
What makes Alito a formidable<lb/>
candidate is an excellent record of<lb/>
service on the federal bench, earn-<lb/>
ing the admiration of liberals as<lb/>
well as conservatives. Mark I. Levy,<lb/>
a Justice Department lawyer under<lb/>
Presidents Carter and Clinton, told<lb/>
the Los Angeles Times that "Alito<lb/>
is very smart, and he is unques-<lb/>
tionably conservative. But he is<lb/>
open-minded and fair Alito's<lb/>
late appeals court colleague, the<lb/>
famously liberal A. Leon Higgin-<lb/>
botham Jr once said, "Sam Alito<lb/>
is my kind of conservative<lb/>
The critics have tried to indict<lb/>
him on the basis of a handful<lb/>
of 300 opinions he has written<lb/>
during his 15 years on the bench.<lb/>
In one dissent, denounced by the<lb/>
Brady Campaign, he concluded<lb/>
that a federal law against machine<lb/>
gun ownership was unconsti-<lb/>
tutional. But that decision was<lb/>
grounded where Alito's opinions<lb/>
doing. Fifty-one percent of the<lb/>
vote is hardly a mandate.<lb/>
That Exxon sign down<lb/>
the street. Maybe if I were an<lb/>
oil tycoon like Bush "was seeing<lb/>
a sign advertising regular gas at<lb/>
2.85 a gallon would be a joyous<lb/>
occasion. But most people aren't<lb/>
oil tycoons and we're sick of<lb/>
being bilked like that. You know,<lb/>
when gas prices spiked in the<lb/>
1970s, we tried to stick a thorn<lb/>
bush up Jimmy Carter's rear end.<lb/>
Why are we sitting for this? Can<lb/>
Bush offer no help whatsoever?<lb/>
The Holding in Roe v.<lb/>
Wade. Study this good, President<lb/>
Bush, because it looks to me that<lb/>
you're stacking the Supreme Court<lb/>
so you can make a move concern-<lb/>
ing Roe v. Wade. You're more wor-<lb/>
ried about a fetus than the poor girl<lb/>
who's going through a nightmare<lb/>
because of a terrible mistake.<lb/>
If Roe v. Wade is overturned,<lb/>
it won't get rid of abortion.<lb/>
They'll just be done illegally<lb/>
and dangerously in back alleys<lb/>
where there's a better chance<lb/>
the patient will die because of it.<lb/>
At least now the procedures are<lb/>
fairly safe. Besides, who are you<lb/>
to make anyone else's decision.<lb/>
You didn't get that mandate.<lb/>
The Public Speaking Hand-<lb/>
book by Steven and Susan<lb/>
Beebe of Texas State University.<lb/>
What happened to public servants<lb/>
who spoke with eloquence and class<lb/>
like Alexander Hamilton? All Bush<lb/>
does is hit the talking points, give a<lb/>
three second blurb for the news and<lb/>
sit through the applause. And God<lb/>
forbid he has to ad-lib.<lb/>
The First Amendment to<lb/>
the United States Constitu-<lb/>
tion. There's a passage in the<lb/>
First Amendment which reads<lb/>
"Congress shall make no law<lb/>
respecting an establishment or<lb/>
religion or prohibiting the free<lb/>
exercise thereof That means<lb/>
stop taking my tax dollars and<lb/>
giving them to churches. Get<lb/>
that religious head who deter-<lb/>
mines what's offensive out of the<lb/>
FCC meetings. And get those Ten<lb/>
Commandments the hell away<lb/>
from my Courthouse.<lb/>
The Richard Nixon<lb/>
Administration. You defi-<lb/>
nitely need to research Nixon's<lb/>
administration because you're<lb/>
about half a step away from turn-<lb/>
ing into it. Actually, I'd be hap-<lb/>
pier if Nixon was president now.<lb/>
At least he started pulling troops<lb/>
out of Vietnam. Bush is sending<lb/>
them into a new one.<lb/>
invariably are: in the decisions of<lb/>
the Supreme Court. In 1995, the<lb/>
court struck down a law banning<lb/>
gun possession in school zones<lb/>
because it exceeded Congress'<lb/>
power to regulate interstate com-<lb/>
merce. Alito made a strong case<lb/>
that the machine gun ban suf-<lb/>
fered from the same flaw.<lb/>
His dissent in a major abor-<lb/>
tion-rights case, which argued for<lb/>
upholding a rule requiring wives<lb/>
to notify their husbands (though<lb/>
not to obtain their consent)<lb/>
before getting abortions, showed<lb/>
the same determination to follow<lb/>
the dictates of the higher court.<lb/>
Writing in The New Republic-<lb/>
Online, Hastings College of<lb/>
Law professor Ethan Leib says<lb/>
his opinion, though eventually<lb/>
rejected by the Supreme Court,<lb/>
was "a careful application of the<lb/>
framework laid out by Justice<lb/>
(Sandra Day) O'Connor<lb/>
What's clear from this is that<lb/>
Alito is a judge's judge methodical,<lb/>
dispassionate and respectful of<lb/>
precedent. Certainly he deserves a<lb/>
thorough appraisal between now<lb/>
and January, when the Senate plans<lb/>
to vote. But the opposition camp is<lb/>
likely to find that, as Americans get<lb/>
acquainted with Alito, they won't<lb/>
find him scary at all.<lb/>
To the person who came to ECU to learn, some of us<lb/>
enjoy going to a party school. This problem is not hard<lb/>
to fix, go somewhere else.<lb/>
OK. Why do the buses switch routes whenever they get to<lb/>
Mendenhall? There should be one bus for each route. I got on<lb/>
the red bus the other night, and when we left, the driver forgot<lb/>
' to mention that he had switched the route and was no longer<lb/>
doing red. I had to ride on the wrong route to find out.<lb/>
' If people that aren't straight know that I am straight,<lb/>
why do they still hit on me?<lb/>
If you are going to smoke please do not do it in front of<lb/>
! a building entrance. You may not mind sitting through<lb/>
' class smelling like an ashtray but I do. Smoke on, but<lb/>
not where I have no way of avoiding you.<lb/>
To the girl wearing the overalls with one strap hanging<lb/>
off, 1985 called and it wants its style back.<lb/>
Los Tios is the most dominant intramural soccer team on<lb/>
the planet. Come check out our next game Monday at 7:30!<lb/>
We were wondering if we ran out of toilet paper would<lb/>
you buy any? Now we are wondering what you have<lb/>
been using as toilet paper since last Friday?<lb/>
Is your goal to make as much noise as possible when-<lb/>
i ever you are in the house?<lb/>
So you transferred schools under the illusion of being<lb/>
closer to all your childhood friends. Instead, you<lb/>
ditched everyone for your new controlling girlfriend.<lb/>
Then you blame all your problems on everyone else.<lb/>
Good job, Captain Loser!<lb/>
To all the people who complain about Student Transit,<lb/>
why don't you just walk, It is better for you anyway.<lb/>
Just because my friend went to Iraq and I started dating<lb/>
you, then we broke up and he came home, does not<lb/>
mean that you were a "fill-in Of all people you should<lb/>
know me better than that! I was not scheming up this<lb/>
plan all along, it's called coincidence.<lb/>
To the girls who complain that they can't jog around<lb/>
town without being harassed, wear something more<lb/>
than a sports bra and hot pants.<lb/>
To the roommate of the person who says someone<lb/>
needs to tell their roommate to walk around in some-<lb/>
thing other than his boxers, try walking around nude<lb/>
and see how they like that.<lb/>
Does anyone know who that guy is in the "great places<lb/>
to meet people" article? I've seen him walking around<lb/>
1 campus. He is beautiful, his teeth are perfect!<lb/>
I think I really should take up playing racquetball<lb/>
I maybe I wouldn't be so broke!<lb/>
To all of those who are so against my befriend because I found<lb/>
: aneaninginhisbed-pleasestopartingsoself-righteous.lt<lb/>
turns out it was my twin sister's earring. I stay with him because<lb/>
he can get me into clubs, he's in a fraternity and he has some<lb/>
! other big assets. I kind of love him too. But I cheat on him<lb/>
too with his frat brothers, so we're even. But don't tell him!<lb/>
ECU sells an arrangement of colored ECU shirts for<lb/>
$9.95. But the purple and yellow shirts are like $20.<lb/>
And, I kid you not, there was a shirt saying "I only wear<lb/>
purple and gold. Go Pirates" (which was $30). How<lb/>
do these people expect poor college kids to buy their<lb/>
school colors when cheaper colors are offered?<lb/>
How come the Sbarros pizza at Wright Place isn't as<lb/>
tasty as they used to be in the first three days of open-<lb/>
ing? I think that's sketchy.<lb/>
I can't believe college students actually "penny people in"<lb/>
and dive into bushes for fun. You're in college now grow up!<lb/>
To the guy who wants his roommate to walk around<lb/>
in something other than his boxers, tell him to walk<lb/>
around my apartment in his boxers! My roommates<lb/>
and I could use some different scenery!<lb/>
The Night Drop-Off bus driver is the greatest!<lb/>
Why did they cancel Titanic for the step show?<lb/>
Why is the Wright Fountain still not working? It is an<lb/>
embarrassment to the ECU campus, especially when<lb/>
we have visitors. The fountain should be a point of<lb/>
pride for us. Let's get it fixed now!<lb/>
Eight percent, HAHA.<lb/>
Ladies, if your feet are cold, your legs should be too. You<lb/>
don't look cute or stylish. You look like you got dressed<lb/>
in the dark without checking the weather channel.<lb/>
I am so over people not knowing how to use a turn-<lb/>
ing lane correctly. They are put there for a reason so<lb/>
use them!<lb/>
Dear Roommate, You freak me out when you run<lb/>
around the house naked. Can we at least get some gym<lb/>
shorts on? Thanks, Your Roommate.<lb/>
If you are someone who wants to sleep around, why are<lb/>
you going to have a boyfriendgirlfriend? Go collect<lb/>
your STDs from whomever you want without hurting<lb/>
someone you have decided to be "committed" to!<lb/>
To all the hypocritical people who complain about the<lb/>
lack of voters. What happened to the approximately<lb/>
49,318 of you who didn't vote on Tuesday?<lb/>
Girls need to stop complaining about the mixed signals<lb/>
they get from guys. Perhaps you should read the book<lb/>
He's lust Not That Into You and you'll find your answer<lb/>
probably from reading the title alone.<lb/>
My rants are always published. Thank you TEC fof<lb/>

was also argued as not having<lb/>
sufficient experience evidenced<lb/>
by the fact she has never been<lb/>
a judge at any level, the same<lb/>
cannot be said of Alito, who has<lb/>
served for the last 15 years on<lb/>
the third U.S. Circuit Court of<lb/>
Appeals. Alito has, in fact, won<lb/>
10 of the 12 cases he has argued<lb/>
before the Supreme Court, no<lb/>
doubt giving him respect from<lb/>
the highest court in the land.<lb/>
Alito is praised by religious<lb/>
sources, with religious broad-<lb/>
caster Pat Robertson calling the<lb/>
pick "a grand-slam home run A<lb/>
key reason for Alito's popularity<lb/>
among the religious is that he is<lb/>
against abortion and openly sup-<lb/>
ports legislation that will limit<lb/>
abortion rights.<lb/>
The fact that Alito has a<lb/>
long history of court decisions<lb/>
from which to examine only<lb/>
makes him more popular with<lb/>
conservatives like Senator Sam<lb/>
Brownback, a Republican from<lb/>
Kansas and a potential presiden-<lb/>
tial candidate.<lb/>
"What I've been hoping for<lb/>
is we would get nominees with a<lb/>
paper trail so we can know their<lb/>
views said Brownback.<lb/>
Democrats who cannot attack Ali-<lb/>

ing him as an extremist of sorts.<lb/>
"The Senate needs to find out<lb/>
if the man replacing Miers is too<lb/>
radical for the American people<lb/>
said Senate Minority Leader<lb/>
Harry Reid of Nevada.<lb/>
It seems that the 22 senators<lb/>
who voted against John Roberts<lb/>
will certainly vote against Alito<lb/>
as well, which also means Alito<lb/>
will get the necessary votes from<lb/>
the rest of the Senate, perhaps<lb/>
before the end of the year. This<lb/>
is what Bush wants.<lb/>

Got Problems?<lb/>
Dear Features,<lb/>
Why do the majority of people who<lb/>
read this newspaper only read the<lb/>
Pirate Rants? Since I have been<lb/>
at ECU, I have found that TEC has<lb/>
many other great sections to read<lb/>
like Features and Sports. If they want<lb/>
to read about other things, why don't<lb/>
they send In suggestions?<lb/>
- Ranting for Features<lb/>
Dear Ranting for Features,<lb/>
We wonder the same thing. Don't<lb/>
people get tired of reading other<lb/>
people whine and complain after<lb/>
a while? Perhaps the Pirate Rants<lb/>
are read because they're short, to<lb/>
the point and sometimes comical.<lb/>
Maybe people want to see if their<lb/>
rant was printed. Maybe the rest<lb/>
of the newspaper Is too dull or<lb/>
boring to them. We really don't<lb/>
know. We would like to encourage<lb/>
people to actually take the time<lb/>
and read the rest of the paper,<lb/>
even if it's just another story or two.<lb/>
Your peers spend long days and<lb/>
even longer nights putting the paper<lb/>
together just for you, do them a favor<lb/>
and read it for something other than<lb/>
random complaints. We've been<lb/>
telling people about some of the<lb/>
stories we run, like the "Survival of the<lb/>
Fittest" series, and people always say<lb/>
something along the lines of "wow<lb/>
that's a really cool idea but have no<lb/>
clue that we've been printing It for<lb/>
the entire semester. Read the paper,<lb/>
educate yourself or entertain yourself,<lb/>
depending on which section you read.<lb/>
You just might find us to be more<lb/>
interesting than previously thought.<lb/>
Recipes:<lb/>
Country Ham with Redeye Gravy<lb/>
and Buttermilk Biscuits<lb/>
6 (12-pound) country ham steaks<lb/>
(uncooked)<lb/>
2 tablespoons butter<lb/>
1 small onion, finely chopped<lb/>
2 tablespoons flour<lb/>
34 cup very strong coffee<lb/>
34 cup chicken stock<lb/>
14 cup chopped green onions<lb/>
14 cup heavy cream<lb/>
Salt and freshly ground black pepper<lb/>
Buttermilk Biscuits, recipe follows<lb/>
Heat a large skillet over high heat and<lb/>
saute ham steaks four to five minutes<lb/>
on each side. Remove to a plate and<lb/>
keep warm while you make the sauce.<lb/>
Add butter and onions to skillet<lb/>
and cook until onions are softened,<lb/>
scraping up any browned bits on<lb/>
pan bottom. Add flour and stir well<lb/>
to combine. Cook for one to two<lb/>
minutes, then add coffee and chicken<lb/>
stock. Whisk well to combine, then<lb/>
allow sauce to cook until thickened,<lb/>
about six minutes. Add green onions<lb/>
and heavy cream and cook five<lb/>
minutes longer. Season with salt and<lb/>
pepper, to taste, and serve over ham<lb/>
steaks with buttermilk biscuits.<lb/>
Buttermilk Biscuits:<lb/>
2 cups flour, sifted<lb/>
2 teaspoons baking powder<lb/>
14 teaspoon baking soda<lb/>
12 teaspoon salt<lb/>
4 tablespoons unsalted butter<lb/>
12 cup plus 2 teaspoons buttermilk<lb/>
Preheat oven to 375 degrees<lb/>
Fahrenheit and line a baking<lb/>
sheet with parchment paper.<lb/>
In a large bowl, combine dry<lb/>
ingredients and blend thoroughly.<lb/>
Using your fingers or a pastry blender,<lb/>
cut In butter until mixture resembles<lb/>
coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk and<lb/>
quickly blend In, making sure to not<lb/>
overwork the dough.<lb/>
On a lightly floured surface, roll out<lb/>
the dough with a rolling pin to a<lb/>
thickness of 12-Inch. Use a biscuit<lb/>
cutter or the rim of a glass, press<lb/>
out as many biscuits as possible.<lb/>
Gather up scraps and quickly knead<lb/>
back together, then cut out as many<lb/>
additional biscuits as possible. Place<lb/>
biscuits on prepared baking sheet<lb/>
and bake until golden brown, about<lb/>
15 to 20 minutes. Serve immediately.<lb/>
Film about the soldier, not the war<lb/>
'Jarhead' focuses on<lb/>
people and not politics<lb/>
TREVOR KIRKENDALL<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
For one of the first times in<lb/>
recent years, we finally have a<lb/>
film that has the potential to be a<lb/>
political soapbox for some of the<lb/>
current administration's foreign<lb/>
policy. However, director Sam<lb/>
Mendes (American Beauty) has<lb/>
chosen not to take sides on politi-<lb/>
cal issues in his new film Jarhead,<lb/>
even though he is opposed to the<lb/>
current situation in Iraq.<lb/>
Jarhead stars Jake Gyllen-<lb/>
haal (Donnie Darko) as Private<lb/>
Anthony Swofford. The year is<lb/>
1989 and Saddam Hussein is<lb/>
getting ready to invade Kuwait<lb/>
prompting the first Gulf War.<lb/>
Swoff (as his friends refer to him<lb/>
in the film) has just enlisted<lb/>
in the Marine Corps for lack<lb/>
of anything else to do with<lb/>
his time. The film opens with<lb/>
him at boot camp and we only<lb/>
see about five minutes of that<lb/>
(unlike Full Metal Jacket where<lb/>
the first hour is all boot camp<lb/>
before heading on to Vietnam).<lb/>
After boot camp, Swoff gets<lb/>
stationed and he is encouraged by<lb/>
Staff Sergeant Sykes (Jamie Foxx)<lb/>
to try out for the scout snipers.<lb/>
Swoff is reluctant, but goes ahead<lb/>
with it anyway. He and seven<lb/>
other men are picked to be scout<lb/>
snipers and Swoff is partnered<lb/>
up with Troy (Peter Sarsgaard).<lb/>
Not long after completion, the<lb/>
media announces Saddam's inva-<lb/>
sion of Kuwait. The Marines are<lb/>
Jamie Foxx (Staff Sergeant Sykes) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko) play soldiers in the Gulf War.<lb/>
all excited that they will be going<lb/>
over seas for some action, despite<lb/>
their assumptions that they will<lb/>
only be there for about two weeks.<lb/>
For once, we are treated to<lb/>
a war movie that really doesn't<lb/>
deserve to be called that. This<lb/>
movie is all about the soldiers<lb/>
stationed in Saudi Arabia rather<lb/>
than the Gulf War itself. There<lb/>
is no action worth mentioning<lb/>
that would even place this in<lb/>
the realms of the war movies we<lb/>
are all familiar with. The title,<lb/>
Jarhead, says it all. This film is<lb/>
about the "jarheads" during the<lb/>
war and not the war.<lb/>
This isn't necessarily a bad<lb/>
thing either. As a matter of fact,<lb/>
it's kind of nice to see the other<lb/>
side of war for once. Films like<lb/>
Saving Private Ryan, The Thin<lb/>
Red Line and Platoon show us<lb/>
the bloody and violent side. All<lb/>
three of these films do show<lb/>
to some degree a human ele-<lb/>
ment to the soldiers, but not in<lb/>
the way that Jarhead does. The<lb/>
closest film comparable to this<lb/>
would be The Deer Hunter which<lb/>
showcased three distinct sec-<lb/>
tions, Robert De Niro and Chris-<lb/>
topher Walken before the war<lb/>
(Vietnam), during the war and<lb/>
after the war. The war was still<lb/>
a focal point, but not nearly as<lb/>
big as the characters themselves.<lb/>
Jarhead is actually based on<lb/>
a book of the same name by the<lb/>
real Anthony Swofford. Judg-<lb/>
ing by some of the lines in the<lb/>
book, he too is against the cur-<lb/>
rent situation overseas. However,<lb/>
screenwriter William Broyles,<lb/>
Jr. (Apollo 13, Entrapment) keeps<lb/>
the politics to a minimum and<lb/>
focuses the story on Swofford<lb/>
and his fellow Marines. Jarhead is<lb/>
neither pro-war nor anti-war and<lb/>
that's the way it should be. Had<lb/>
the filmmakers made it lopsided,<lb/>
it may not have been as powerful<lb/>
as it is. Come to think of it, there<lb/>
was only one instance where the<lb/>
subject of politics was brought up.<lb/>
Sarsgaard's character shoots this<lb/>
idea down and says that they're<lb/>
here to do a job - something<lb/>
almost all soldiers believe.<lb/>
As a film that has created a lot<lb/>
of buzz on the film festival circuit<lb/>
as an Oscar hopeful, Jarhead does<lb/>
live up to its expectations, but<lb/>
will probably not win a coveted<lb/>
Best Picture nod. Out off all the<lb/>
main performances in this film,<lb/>
Jamie Foxx seems to be the only<lb/>
one who could snag a nomina-<lb/>
tion. His performance as the fast<lb/>
talking Staff Sergeant is fiery and,<lb/>
at time, humorous. Gyllenhaal<lb/>
also has landed in the best role of<lb/>
his young career. He portrays this<lb/>
character with a lot of emotion<lb/>
ever second he is on the screen.<lb/>
At one point he takes a slip into<lb/>
a psychotic state and he is excep-<lb/>
tional in this segment.<lb/>
Oscar winning director Sam<lb/>
Mendes proves that his previous<lb/>
two features, American Beauty<lb/>
and Road to Perdition, were not<lb/>
beginners luck. A veteran British<lb/>
stage director, Mendes has always<lb/>
been outstanding at getting the<lb/>
emotions out of his actors. They<lb/>
perform as if they were on the<lb/>
stage rather than in front of a<lb/>
camera. He has done the same<lb/>
once again with Jarhead.<lb/>
Don't expect to go into this<lb/>
film looking for lots of battle<lb/>
sequences, blood and gore. This is<lb/>
the soldiers' story about what they<lb/>
do for a living. The powerful per-<lb/>
formances and the solid screen-<lb/>
writing make Jarhead one of the<lb/>
better war films in recent years.<lb/>

So last weekend I think I<lb/>
did one of the craziest things<lb/>
I've done In my 21 years of exis-<lb/>

the majority of this month's<lb/>
paycheck to fly to my home<lb/>
state of Maryland and stay for<lb/>
just over 24 hours, only to see<lb/>
a band which I had already<lb/>
seen a dozen times before.<lb/>
Dashboard Confessional is my<lb/>
favorite band and as you can tell<lb/>
by the photo, I'm quite obsessed.<lb/>
I'm going to do something<lb/>
that very few journalists do, I'm<lb/>
going to open up and spill all of<lb/>
my emotions regarding this expe-<lb/>
rience just for your viewing plea-<lb/>

Brief history, I grew up lis-<lb/>

of the so-called "emo" genre. I<lb/>
worshiped the ground that bands<lb/>
like Fugazi and Rites of Spring<lb/>
walked on, and when the genre<lb/>
revolutionized, I followed it and<lb/>
latched onto Florida band Further<lb/>

fell in love with singersong-<lb/>

solo side project, Dashboard<lb/>

Roughly five years (and<lb/>

was catching a plane from<lb/>
RDU to Baltimore. Despite<lb/>
being rejected for an inter-<lb/>

Never watch 'Ichi the<lb/>

GARY MCCABE<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Honestly, I've never<lb/>
really gotten into the whole<lb/>
Japanese culture scene that<lb/>
a lot of people my age are<lb/>
borderline obsessed with.<lb/>
I mean, I've seen a few of<lb/>
the hipaiiitn.ition shows on<lb/>
Adult Swim at four in the<lb/>
morning, but I really don't<lb/>
see what's so special about it.<lb/>
The same rule of thumb has<lb/>
gone for Japanese films as well. I<lb/>
saw Ringu, the basis of The Ring<lb/>
and frankly, I wasn't crazy about<lb/>
It or a lot of the other Japanese<lb/>
films that have migrated into<lb/>
American consciousness. How-<lb/>
ever, my opinion of Japanese film<lb/>
changed drastically recently when<lb/>
I sat down to watch Ichi the Killer.<lb/>
I had read about Ichi the Killer<lb/>
in several magazines that boasted<lb/>
of its unparalleled blood, vio-<lb/>
lence and utter insanity and for<lb/>
some reason I decided to give It<lb/>
a chance. After all, I liked the Kill<lb/>
Bill films and - I thought<lb/>
- how much worse could<lb/>
it be? To answer the ques-<lb/>
tion, a lot worse (in terms<lb/>
of violence that is.)<lb/>
Typically plots don't<lb/>
matter much in these<lb/>
sort of films but the story<lb/>
in Ichi the Killer is worth<lb/>
noting - if only for its<lb/>
absolute absurdity. It's a<lb/>
tough film to follow- I've<lb/>
seen It three times thus<lb/>
far and I'm still not com-<lb/>
pletely certain of what's<lb/>
going on. Normally, that<lb/>
would be a clear sign that<lb/>
a movie is bad. That's<lb/>
not the case with Ichi the<lb/>
Killer - it only makes you want<lb/>
to see it. over and over again.<lb/>

Disney abandons hand<lb/>
drawn animation for CGI<lb/>
with 'Chicken Little'<lb/>
TREVOR KIRKENDALL<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
Disney has now abandoned<lb/>
the classic hand drawn animated<lb/>
feature and switched to computer<lb/>
animation following the revolu-<lb/>
tionary work by Pixar. They have<lb/>
also done away with the musical<lb/>
numbers in the films as well. This<lb/>
new formula of filmmaking for<lb/>
Disney has proven itself to be<lb/>
a mistake and it shows In their<lb/>
newest cartoon Chicken Little.<lb/>
It's interesting that you can<lb/>
take a 20-second nursery rhyme<lb/>
and stretch it into an 80-minute<lb/>
feature. This leaves room for the<lb/>
writers to have creative freedom.<lb/>
Robert L. Baird, Steve Bencich,<lb/>
RonJ. Friedman and Dan Gerson<lb/>
all had a hand in destroying the<lb/>
classic children's rhyme. Sign<lb/>
number one you have a bad film<lb/>
on your hands, the screenplay<lb/>
was written by more than two<lb/>
people. With four people writing<lb/>
the same movie, you have four<lb/>
different minds working on four<lb/>
different ideas of how the story<lb/>
should progress.<lb/>
Zach Braff (Carden State)<lb/>
voices Chicken Little, a tiny<lb/>
chicken who claims that the<lb/>
sky is falling one sunny after-<lb/>
noon. The residents of the town,<lb/>
including his own father, Buck<lb/>
Cluck (voiced by Pretty Woman<lb/>
and Raising Helen director Garry<lb/>
Marshall). A year goes by and<lb/>
the residents still think Chicken<lb/>
Little is crazy. The only people<lb/>
who don't are his friends Abby<lb/>
Mallard (Joan Cusack) and Runt<lb/>
of the Litter (Steve Zahn).<lb/>
Chicken Little gets the idea to<lb/>
make himself a hero. He decides<lb/>
to join the school baseball team<lb/>
where he hopes to be a legend just<lb/>
like his father was many years<lb/>
ago. He succeeds in changing his<lb/>
image, but no sooner after this<lb/>
happens, a piece of the sky hits<lb/>
him yet again.<lb/>
This time, however, there is<lb/>
an evil looking spaceship that is<lb/>
associated with it this time. Its<lb/>
pilots are two robotic looking<lb/>
aliens that look like goofy Ver-<lb/>
sions of the tripods from this<lb/>
summer's War of the Worlds.<lb/>
Two words come to mind<lb/>
when thinking about how to<lb/>
describe this film, not funny.<lb/>
There are semi-humorous parfs,<lb/>
most of which are puns at other<lb/>
films such as Raiders of the Lost<lb/>
Ark and the original 1933 version<lb/>
of King Kong, something very few<lb/>
people in audience understood.<lb/>
As a matter of fact, I may have<lb/>
been the only one. A better<lb/>
selection of films that the target<lb/>
audience may have seen prior to<lb/>
this would have made for larger<lb/>
laughs in the theater.<lb/>
As for the underlying message<lb/>
that all Disney films seem to pos-<lb/>
sess, it is the exact same message<lb/>
that Finding Nemo was trying to<lb/>
get across. Is Disney running out<lb/>
of so many ideas that they have<lb/>
to steal messages from their own<lb/>
vault? Apparently so.<lb/>
Here's a tip to the filmmakers<lb/>
at Disney: leave the computer<lb/>
animation to Pixar and 20th<lb/>
Century's animation studio<lb/>
(makers of Robots and Ice Age),<lb/>
continue to'hand draw your films<lb/>
and hire back Alan Menken for<lb/>
some more memorable Oscar<lb/>
winning songs.<lb/>
And here's a tip to the film-<lb/>
goers, stick to the other Pixar<lb/>
animated films like Toy Story,<lb/>
Finding Nemo or The Incredihles<lb/>
rather than wasting time, energy<lb/>
and thought processes on (:hiiktn<lb/>
Little. It is hardly anything you<lb/>
will regret skipping. Cute as the<lb/>
idea Is, Disney just could not<lb/>
make this one work.<lb/>

Just meeting the band is<lb/>
a cultural experience. Guitar-<lb/>
ist Jardel Paisante hails from<lb/>
Brazil, as do percussionist Danny<lb/>

and guitarist Ahrue Lister is<lb/>
from the California bay area. A<lb/>
group this culturally diverse<lb/>
coming together to make music<lb/>
makes for a unique blend with<lb/>
a hard-rocking central artery.<lb/>
The band's first release came<lb/>
in 2001 after signing with Road-<lb/>

called Revolution, Revolution and<lb/>
their first single was a song called<lb/>
"What Comes Around If you're<lb/>

album. Confession, which came<lb/>
on the soundtrack to Freddy vs.<lb/>
Jason. The group has appeared<lb/>
on Ozzfest and Jagermeister tours,<lb/>
all since forming in 1999.<lb/>
Their newest album is called<lb/>
One Nation Underground and<lb/>
showcases some unique sounds.<lb/>
For instance, it might be a bit<lb/>
perplexing to consider hard rock<lb/>
with tribal-style percussion and<lb/>
classical Spanish guitar. Most<lb/>
of the songs on this album put<lb/>
these together with fluidity that<lb/>
makes you think they've never<lb/>
been heard separately.<lb/>
However, la muslca (the music)<lb/>
isn't the only part of 111 Nino that<lb/>
sets them apart. The lyrics of the<lb/>
songs are sung in both English<lb/>
and Spanish harmoniously, so<lb/>

you may be scrounging for a<lb/>

Looking up the words is worth<lb/>
your while, however. According<lb/>
to Machado (quoted from the<lb/>
band's official Web site), the<lb/>
band's newest album looks to be<lb/>
deeper lyrically than past albums.<lb/>
"The easiest thing to do Is<lb/>
write about relationships and<lb/>
your family this record is<lb/>
about society being controlled<lb/>
and divided through all sorts of<lb/>
different influences both internal<lb/>
and external Machado says.<lb/>
The thing that will immedi-<lb/>
ately grab you about the music is<lb/>
how the spicey Latin beat comes<lb/>
through.<lb/>
Check out their song "In This<lb/>
Moment" for the best example of<lb/>
this phenomenon taking place in<lb/>
your head.<lb/>
Some of the top tracks on this<lb/>
album include "This is War" and<lb/>
"What You Deserve which can<lb/>
be heard on some radio stations<lb/>
as their first single. Other per-<lb/>
sonal favorites include "Every-<lb/>

of Mine Most of the tracks are<lb/>
very impressive, however, and<lb/>
this could be an album for many<lb/>
who like to start at track one and<lb/>
enjoy all the way to the end.<lb/>
The band as a whole is very<lb/>
happy with what this album<lb/>
has come out to be, and chances<lb/>
are you will be too, because it<lb/>
has a new twist on hard rock.<lb/>
It comes out hard with the<lb/>
belief that you can be hard<lb/>
rock and still have some classic<lb/>
roots in styles from your culture.<lb/>
Ill Niflo's music is the refresh-<lb/>
ing result of cultural mixing<lb/>

His trail of, well, entrails and<lb/>
sliced flesh leads him to Ichi, the<lb/>
most efficient, merciless killer<lb/>
to ever walk the Earth. However,<lb/>
there's a twist. Ichi doesn't enjoy<lb/>
killing - he's been brainwashed<lb/>
into and coerced into doing it by<lb/>
his mentor Jijii, who uses him<lb/>
only to create unrest in the world<lb/>
of the Yakuza gangs.<lb/>
Ichi has been bullied his<lb/>

that Jijii exploits to sick his<lb/>

But all that really doesn't<lb/>

storyline and there are some<lb/>
very odd and enjoyable plot<lb/>
twists but the appeal of Ichi<lb/>
the Killer is in its pure, blood-<lb/>
shoot ing-out-the-arm-sockets<lb/>
carnage - a lot of which 1 can't<lb/>
really go into in this article.<lb/>
I felt like a young child<lb/>
again, covering my eyes<lb/>
with my hands to avoid the<lb/>
grotesque scenes, but con-<lb/>
stantly peeping through<lb/>
with a morbid fascination.<lb/>
It's about as violent and dis-<lb/>
gusting a film as they come.<lb/>
For example, after torturing a<lb/>
rival gang leader by hanging him<lb/>
from hooks and pouring boiling<lb/>
grease on his body, Kakihara<lb/>
repents by slicing his own tongue<lb/>
off. In another scene, Ichi with<lb/>
one giant bicycle kick, complete<lb/>
splits a man in half.<lb/>
Disgusting? Yes. But the film<lb/>
is so over-the-top violent and so<lb/>
bizarre that it's enthralling. Not<lb/>
to mention the cinematography<lb/>
of the film. American slasher<lb/>
films look like 1970s porno. Ichi<lb/>
the Killer looks amazing and<lb/>
super-stylized.<lb/>
This film's not for<lb/>
everyone. But more people will get<lb/>
enjoyment from it than you'd<lb/>
expect. On it's surface it's another<lb/>
ultra-violent Yakuza film, but<lb/>
pay attention because ultimately<lb/>
it's something altogether more<lb/>
wonderful if you have the<lb/>

my recommendation, keep<lb/>

STAFF WRITER<lb/>
The picture of Travis Aber-<lb/>
crombie provided on the press<lb/>
release supporting his album Tied<lb/>
kind of threw me for a loop. With<lb/>
crossed arms and an indignant<lb/>
glare, Abercrombie looks like<lb/>
some sort of angry giant - like<lb/>
a mongoloid version of Dallas<lb/>
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban<lb/>
- leading me to expect him to play<lb/>
prog-metal or something heavy.<lb/>
Instead, what I heard was the<lb/>
same dime-a-dozen alt-rock that<lb/>
I hear when I turn on any ter-<lb/>
restrial rock station. Tied sounds<lb/>
like one part Our Lady Peace, one<lb/>
part Matchbox 20 with a double<lb/>
shot of Better Than Ezra for good<lb/>
measure. That's not to say it isn't<lb/>
listenable though - Our Lady<lb/>
Peace, Matchbox Twenty and<lb/>
Better Than Ezra are (or were)<lb/>
pretty successful for a reason,<lb/>
right? In fact, taken for what it is,<lb/>
Tied it's somewhat enjoyable.<lb/>
Abercrombie was born in<lb/>
raised South Carolina and has<lb/>
been working the music racket<lb/>
for eight years. While at Clemson,<lb/>
he formed the band Seven Miles<lb/>
which for an Indie college band<lb/>

Encouraged by the success<lb/>
of Seven Miles, Abercrombie<lb/>
recorded a spiritual, debut solo<lb/>
album in 2001 and decided to<lb/>
pack his bags and move to Nash-<lb/>
ville, hoping to have an edge as a<lb/>
"rocker" in a "country" town. He<lb/>
paid his dues working open mics<lb/>
and small shows in Nashville and<lb/>
slowly built a following.<lb/>
That following led to his<lb/>
second album, Spin, and slowly<lb/>
things started to come together.<lb/>
He rounded out a concrete line-<lb/>
up of musicians to tour with and<lb/>
started receiving some decent<lb/>
radio airplay in college towns as<lb/>
the album sold steadily after each<lb/>
show. Now, after taking 2004 off<lb/>
for "timing" issues, Abercrombie<lb/>
is hoping to build more momen-<lb/>
tum with Tied.<lb/>
Tied is a pretty low-key, laid<lb/>
back modern rock record with<lb/>
a slightly bluesy feeling at times.<lb/>
The musicianship of the band<lb/>
- guitarists George Cocchini<lb/>
and Audley Freed, bassist Chris<lb/>
Donohue, drummer Steve Ebe<lb/>
and percussionist Ron Bennett<lb/>
- is solid but never flashy.<lb/>
Although I suppose if they<lb/>
were supposed to be the focal<lb/>
point of the record, their names<lb/>
would have made the cover of the<lb/>
album. They're too good for back-<lb/>
ing band status, though. Their<lb/>
work on the songs "Haunt Me"<lb/>
and "Morning Sun" is exceptional.<lb/>
As for Abercrombie, I'm not<lb/>
completely sold on the talent of<lb/>
his vaunted on the accompany-<lb/>
ing press release. His voice - aside<lb/>
from being eerily similar to that<lb/>
of 1990s alternative band Live's<lb/>
singer Ed Kowalczyk - is bland.<lb/>
However, he does the make the<lb/>
most of it by singing each of his<lb/>
lyrics with as much gut-wrench-<lb/>
ing emotion as he can muster. I'll<lb/>
gladly give him points for effort.<lb/>
Speaking of his lyrics - which<lb/>
were all written by him and the<lb/>
occasional help from a guest<lb/>
co-writer - are quite poignant<lb/>
at times and are consistently<lb/>
thoughtful and interesting.<lb/>
Abercrombie chooses to write<lb/>
about the typical rock star fare<lb/>
- finding and losing love - but<lb/>
he's more than capable of put-<lb/>
ting a unique South Carolina<lb/>
spin on it to keep things fresh.<lb/>
All in all, it's not a terri-<lb/>
ble record at all. There are a<lb/>
handful of quality songs on the<lb/>
album - most notably "Elevator<lb/>
Song" and "God" - but most<lb/>
of the time I'm too occupied<lb/>
thinking of who he'i trying to<lb/>
sound like than who he really is.<lb/>
Basically, I wouldn't go out of<lb/>
my way to listen to Tied, but if it<lb/>
came on the radio one day, I prob-<lb/>
ably wouldn't turn the station.<lb/>

the disappointment which I was<lb/>
about to experience. I arrived<lb/>
at Washington College, a small<lb/>
school located on the Eastern<lb/>
Shore of Maryland with just over<lb/>
1,000 students, about an hour<lb/>
and a half before doors were<lb/>
scheduled to open for this show.<lb/>
I parked my little Italian self in<lb/>
line behind about thirty other<lb/>
people anxiously awaiting the<lb/>
performance. I managed to sneak<lb/>
around to the back of the build-<lb/>
ing (while leaving my significant<lb/>
other in line) to see if I could<lb/>
catch-a closer look at Carrabba,<lb/>
since he's infamously known<lb/>
for hanging out before and after<lb/>
shows to spend time with his<lb/>
fans. I caught a bit of their sound<lb/>
check before I ventured back<lb/>
out front because, quite frankly,<lb/>
I was tired of standing around<lb/>
hearing guitars being tuned and<lb/>
I came to the conclusion that Mr.<lb/>
Carrabba wasn't coming outside<lb/>
anytime soon.<lb/>
Doors opened, the show<lb/>
started, and I had a prime posi-<lb/>
tion front and center only about<lb/>
ten feet from the stage. Dash-<lb/>
board came on stage and they<lb/>
started off strong with the upbeat,<lb/>
fast paced "Am I Missing" off of<lb/>
their latest release, and then they<lb/>
broke into one of the many fan<lb/>
favorites, "Sharp Hint of New<lb/>
Tears From then on, I was slowly<lb/>
becoming bored. They proceeded<lb/>
to play about an hour and 45<lb/>
minutes of their slowest songs,<lb/>
except for four short songs with<lb/>
some sort of excitement. Now<lb/>
don't get me wrong, I'm a fan<lb/>
of older DC songs just as much<lb/>
as the newer electric music, but<lb/>
when you're playing a small col-<lb/>
lege show where the majority of<lb/>
the people in attendance will<lb/>
know you only by your singles,<lb/>
you don't play mostly slow songs.<lb/>
You want to impress, you want to<lb/>
get people into the music, you<lb/>
don't want them to yawn.<lb/>
Granted Carrabba's voice<lb/>
sounded excellent, but I felt as if<lb/>
the show and the atmosphere was<lb/>
lacking energy. Carrabba him-<lb/>
self even mentioned something<lb/>
halfway through the set about<lb/>
how people weren't singing<lb/>
along loud enough and weren't<lb/>
energetic (when DC is known<lb/>
for having fans sing along louder<lb/>
than Carrabba can). He said he<lb/>
would kick it up a notch, played<lb/>
one faster song, then slowed it<lb/>
down again. Aside from all of<lb/>
this, it was a good performance.<lb/>
They played a new song, ten-<lb/>
tatively titled "Don't Wait" which<lb/>
I was impressed with. Carrabba's<lb/>
vocals were also pretty dead on<lb/>
all night. Another high point<lb/>
was when "A Plain Morning" was<lb/>
brought out of "retirement I<lb/>
hadn't seen this song performed<lb/>
live before, and I was glad that<lb/>
they brought it back out for a<lb/>
night. The most energy was<lb/>
seen during the encore when<lb/>
the band played (shockingly)<lb/>
their two biggest singles, "Vin-<lb/>
dicated" from the Spidermtm 2<lb/>
soundtrack and "Hands Down<lb/>
I believe the show might have<lb/>
been more energetic if they per-<lb/>
haps traded one or two slower<lb/>
songs for something along the<lb/>
lines of "Bend and Not Break" or<lb/>
"Hey Girl" just to pick it up a bit.<lb/>
Events happened after the<lb/>
show regarding concert security<lb/>
which made the night an even<lb/>
worse experience. To make a very<lb/>
long story short, Carrabba said<lb/>
that he would be around after the<lb/>
show if anyone wanted to hang<lb/>
out. About 10 minutes after this<lb/>
was said, campus security liter-<lb/>
ally removed all concert patrons<lb/>
from not only the pavilion, but<lb/>
from campus all together. Only<lb/>
about twenty people decided<lb/>
to stick around and we tried<lb/>
walking around back to where<lb/>
the band's vehicles were parked.<lb/>
We were just standing around,<lb/>
peacefully, sharing stories and<lb/>
concert experiences with each<lb/>
other, willing to wait until the<lb/>
band came out, but apparently<lb/>
that was too much for security<lb/>
to handle. I was literally walked<lb/>
to the car and the campus police<lb/>
stood there watching until I left<lb/>
campus, and all I was doing was<lb/>
standing around waiting for an<lb/>
autograph. A few people were<lb/>
able to sneak around the cops, but<lb/>
obviously I was not one of them.<lb/>
Overall, not a horrible show,<lb/>
but not one of the best I've seen.<lb/>
Maybe I'm jaded, maybe I'm<lb/>
greedy, who knows. I'm bitter,<lb/>
probably because this was one<lb/>
of my last opportunities to get<lb/>
a quote or two from the band<lb/>
to run in this article. I graduate<lb/>
in a few months and won't have<lb/>
the honor of writing for publica-<lb/>
tion if my career track works out<lb/>
as I've planned. I know that by<lb/>
writing this review, I'm eliminat-<lb/>
ing whatever chances 1 had at an<lb/>
interview with any members of<lb/>
the band, but I can't lie. I wasn't<lb/>
about to write a review about how<lb/>
stellar of a show this was, I don't<lb/>
want to lie to you, our readers.<lb/>
Will I shell out more money<lb/>
the next time Dashboard Con-<lb/>
fessional is within 500 miles?<lb/>
Most definitely - like I said, I'm<lb/>
obsessed. Will I ever attend<lb/>
another event at that venue or<lb/>
have such high hopes? No.<lb/>

Rested Pirates to take on Tulsa<lb/>
ECU must win out to be<lb/>

Lions battle in the African<lb/>
Serengeti for territory. After<lb/>
each combat, the domain<lb/>
hungry felines rest to lick their<lb/>
wounds. For days, the lions sleep,<lb/>
exhausted from the bloodshed<lb/>
exacted from their opponents.<lb/>
A football field is hardly the<lb/>
African plains, but an idle week<lb/>
helped ECU's football players to<lb/>
recoup. Nicks and knacks were<lb/>
nursed by the training staff. The<lb/>
sleep deprived players napped<lb/>
often, free of commitments over<lb/>
the weekend.<lb/>
"This has been an open date<lb/>
which has been great for us<lb/>
because it is an opportunity to get<lb/>
healthy physically and mentally,<lb/>
and to have an attitude adjust-<lb/>
ment in what turns into be a long<lb/>
grind in a long season said first<lb/>
year head coach Skip Holtz.<lb/>
The Pirates immediately<lb/>
exceeded expectations with<lb/>
wins over Duke, SMU and Rice,<lb/>
but have also frustrated fans with<lb/>
close losses. The last two contests,<lb/>
both games ECU could have<lb/>
(and maybe should have) won,<lb/>
has drained the fans' immediate<lb/>
momentum.<lb/>
Throughout the season, Holtz<lb/>
has stayed positive. Not John<lb/>
Thompson positive, but enough<lb/>
to soothe fans' knee-jerk reac-<lb/>
tions. Holtz has praised the effort<lb/>
of his team on the field, but has<lb/>
been publicly frustrated with his<lb/>
team's aptitude for committing<lb/>
errors at inopportune times.<lb/>
"I asked them to sit down and<lb/>
evaluate if the season were to end<lb/>
after eight games Holtz said at<lb/>
his weekly press conference.<lb/>
"Some of the words that have<lb/>
been chosen were 'disappoint-<lb/>
ing 'close 'inconsistent and<lb/>
'missed opportunities It is a<lb/>
season that almost was<lb/>
Yet the season isn't complete.<lb/>
ECU has a short sprint remain-<lb/>
ing with three games left on<lb/>
the schedule. But the last leg<lb/>
will determine the attitude for a<lb/>
season so far marred by what-ifs.<lb/>
"When you are looking at it<lb/>
you are three plays away from<lb/>
being 6-2, and you are saying<lb/>
'wow, we have been so close on<lb/>
so many opportunities Holtz<lb/>
said.<lb/>
"What we have talked about<lb/>
as a team is turning because we<lb/>
can still change where we are on<lb/>
the season. We can still change<lb/>
the outcome of this season.<lb/>
Instead of being a season of<lb/>
'almost or 'what would have<lb/>
beens we have an opportunity<lb/>
to make it that 'we got it done<lb/>
For the first time in 2005,<lb/>
ECU got it done on the ground<lb/>
against UCF. Chris Johnson<lb/>
was replaced by the two-headed<lb/>
monster of Brandon Fractious<lb/>
and Dominque Lindsay in the<lb/>
backfield. Holtz plans to use all<lb/>
three, but keep Johnson as the<lb/>
starter.<lb/>
"With the way the other two<lb/>
guys have played, they warranted<lb/>
that they need to touch the ball<lb/>
a little more Holtz said.<lb/>
"They're all going to play. I<lb/>
think they've merited more play-<lb/>
ing time<lb/>

Stephens treated as fourth starting linebacker<lb/>
Backup linebacker has<lb/>
battled through injuries<lb/>
ERIC GILMORE<lb/>
SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
Deshaun Stephens has been a valuable backup for the Pirates.<lb/>
Dashaun Stephens isn't an<lb/>
attention grabber. He doesn't<lb/>
crave the limelight. He has no<lb/>
signature dances after tackles or<lb/>
flashy chains draped around his<lb/>
neck. He doesn't talk smack.<lb/>
Blending is perfectly fine for<lb/>
Stephens. An uncommon trait<lb/>
seen in today's me-first society,<lb/>
Stephens doesn't mind fitting<lb/>
in. The senior is content walking<lb/>
past reporters after practice while<lb/>
his fellow teammates generate<lb/>
sound bites.<lb/>
But if not for one play last<lb/>
year, Stephens might be garner-<lb/>
ing more attention. As he had<lb/>
been instructed, the linebacker<lb/>
was heading for the ballcarrier<lb/>
while bracing for impact. An<lb/>
opposing lineman dove at his<lb/>
knees to knock him off his feet,<lb/>
n It was then that Stephens heard a<lb/>
loud popping sound in his right<lb/>
knee. Immediately, he knew his<lb/>
junior season was over.<lb/>
Stephens was another name<lb/>
on the triage unit that wreaked<lb/>
havoc on ECU's second consecu-<lb/>
tive dormant season under John<lb/>
Thompson. The linebacker joined<lb/>
wideout Bobby Good and tight<lb/>
ends Shawn Levesque and Sean<lb/>
Harmon, all of whom suffered<lb/>
knee injuries.<lb/>
But Stephens's case was a little<lb/>
different. Good, Levesque and<lb/>
Harmon were surefire starters.<lb/>
Stephens had only started two<lb/>
games in his career. The former<lb/>
coaching staff had demoted him<lb/>
midseason in favor of true fresh-<lb/>
man Durwin Lamb.<lb/>
A determined Stephens trans-<lb/>
ferred his pads for crutches. The<lb/>
Tabor City, NC native was already<lb/>
a grizzled veteran at rehabilita-<lb/>
tion. During high school, Ste-<lb/>
phens suffered an ankle injury<lb/>
that severely debilitated his<lb/>
senior season. But Stephens really<lb/>
notched his expertise in the<lb/>
training room when he partially<lb/>
tore his MCL during his sopho-<lb/>
more year.<lb/>
Stephens agonized in rehab-<lb/>
bing his fresh MCL and ACL tear.<lb/>
While busy with rebuilding his<lb/>
cartilage, Stephens was forced<lb/>
to again watch younger players<lb/>
climb the depth chart at his posi-<lb/>
tion. Redshirt freshman Jarrett<lb/>
Wiggins was listed as the starter<lb/>
coming out of spring practice.<lb/>
"They just said 'we'll give you<lb/>
a chance said Stephens about<lb/>
his new coaching staff.<lb/>
"If you go out and perform<lb/>
like we want you to and know<lb/>
you can, we'll give you a chance.<lb/>
That's what I did. I tried to bust<lb/>
my tail in the weight room to get<lb/>
my knee as strong as I could<lb/>
When fall camp finally rolled<lb/>
around, Stephens beat out Wig-<lb/>
gins. But Stephens couldn't beat<lb/>
out fellow senior Josh Chisolm<lb/>
who regained his eligibility after<lb/>
sitting out a year. Not starting<lb/>
isn't a problem for Stephens.<lb/>
"I love it Stephens said<lb/>
about his backup role.<lb/>
"Of course, I'd rather start,<lb/>
but I'm still part of the team. I<lb/>
can still go out there and make<lb/>
a big play. I can still do my job<lb/>
and help the team win. I'm not<lb/>
a selfish person<lb/>
"I trust Dashaun just as much<lb/>
as I trust Cheese (Chisolm) or<lb/>
Chris while he's in there said<lb/>
fellow senior linebacker Richard<lb/>
Koonce.<lb/>
"We're just all like brothers<lb/>
out there<lb/>
Stephens has logged 23 total<lb/>
tackles and a single tackle-for-<lb/>
loss. He ranks among the top 10<lb/>
on the team in solo tackles with<lb/>
14. Stephens grabbed a fourth<lb/>
quarter lame-duck by Wake<lb/>
Forest quarterback Ben Mauk in<lb/>
the second game of the season.<lb/>
His pick is by the only player,<lb/>
not in the secondary, to record<lb/>
an interception.<lb/>
Since Skip Holtz and the new<lb/>
coaching staff arrived, he has<lb/>
preached senior leadership. Play-<lb/>
ers like Stephens have to carry the<lb/>
torch for the younger guys.<lb/>
"These four seniors are really<lb/>
taking it upon themselves to get<lb/>
this team in the right direction<lb/>
said linebackers coach Rock<lb/>

ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR<lb/>
The Indianapolis Colts<lb/>
deserve the headlines this week<lb/>
after finally overcoming their<lb/>
nemesis with a 40-21 win over<lb/>
New England on Monday night.<lb/>
Quarterback Peyton Manning<lb/>
turned out an impressive per-<lb/>
formance against a defense that<lb/>
previously has had his number.<lb/>
More importantly, the Colts are<lb/>
8-0.<lb/>
The college ranks in this<lb/>
week's edition of TEC Top 10<lb/>
features some key SEC matchups<lb/>
as Alabama puts its unbeaten<lb/>
record on the line against LSU.<lb/>
That division, along with others,<lb/>
are heating up in the race for<lb/>
the BCS.<lb/>
Last week's record: 6-4<lb/>
Season record: 3S-25<lb/>
No. 1 USC at California<lb/>
Despite the critics of the<lb/>
Trojans' defense, USC rumbles<lb/>
on. Their latest victim was<lb/>
Stanford in a 51-21 blowout<lb/>
last week. Let's get a quick<lb/>
update on USC's dominating<lb/>
individual statistics. Matt Leinart<lb/>
has thrown for 2,771 yards and<lb/>
23 touchdowns. Reggie Bush has<lb/>
rushed for 1,022 yards and 11<lb/>
touchdowns, LenDale White has<lb/>
913 yards and 14 scores. Receiv-<lb/>
ers Dwayne Jarrett has racked up<lb/>
964 yards and 14 touchdowns on<lb/>
65 receptions. All of this in nine<lb/>
games. Needless to say, struggling<lb/>
Cal doesn't stand a chance. USC<lb/>
wins 41-27.<lb/>
No. 5 LSU at No. 4<lb/>
Alabama<lb/>
Easily the game of the week<lb/>
in the college ranks, Alabama's<lb/>
unbeaten season will be tested<lb/>
as the Tigers invade Tuscaloosa<lb/>
on Saturday. Alabama has done<lb/>
It with defense all season, allow-<lb/>
ing a ridiculous 8.2 points per<lb/>
contest. South Carolina was the<lb/>
last team to score two touch-<lb/>
downs against the Crimson Tide<lb/>
and that came in mid Septem-<lb/>
ber. LSU was just a second half<lb/>
collapse away against Tennessee<lb/>
from making this meeting a clash<lb/>
of perfect teams, but the Tigers<lb/>
still boast key wins over Florida<lb/>
and Auburn. Alabama escapes<lb/>
unscathed this time, 17-16.<lb/>
No. 15 Auburn at No. 9<lb/>
Georgia<lb/>
Another huge SEC battle fea-<lb/>
tures the Bulldogs' hopes for a<lb/>
conference title on the line with<lb/>
Auburn still in the hunt as well.<lb/>
Injured quarterback D.J. Shock-<lb/>
ley will return for Georgia after<lb/>
missing his team's loss to Florida<lb/>
two weeks ago. He will need<lb/>
to be at 100 percent to pre-<lb/>
pare his offense for one of the<lb/>
top defense's in the country as<lb/>
Auburn is allowing just 12.7<lb/>
points a game. The Bulldogs<lb/>
are no slouch on defense either<lb/>
 so expect an old-fashioned low<lb/>
' scoring SEC affair with Georgia<lb/>
winning 14-13.<lb/>
No. 12 Florida at South'<lb/>
Carolina<lb/>
Steve Spurrier will face his<lb/>
former team for the first time<lb/>
this weekend as a big underdog.<lb/>
While Florida has continued their<lb/>
impressive offensive fireworks<lb/>
without Spurrier, the Gamecocks<lb/>
are just getting comfortable with .<lb/>
their new coach's scheme. It<lb/>
may take a few years, but South<lb/>
Carolina will eventually emerge<lb/>
as a contender in the SEC. They<lb/>
don't have enough firepower this<lb/>
weekend so expect the Gators to<lb/>
roll 30-14.<lb/>
No. 25 Northwestern at<lb/>
No. 10 Ohio State<lb/>
Northwestern may have one<lb/>
 <lb/>
of the nation's most explosive<lb/>
offenses, but unfortunately their<lb/>
defense is horrendous. Ohio State<lb/>
should have little trouble taking<lb/>
care of business on Saturday.<lb/>
Senior quarterback Brett Basanez<lb/>
is one of most prolific passers<lb/>
in NCAA history, but he will<lb/>
struggle and I think the Wildcats<lb/>
will put up their lowest point<lb/>
total of the season, falling to the<lb/>
Buckeyes 27-16.<lb/>
Denver at Oakland<lb/>
Denver has emerged as Indy's<lb/>
main competition in the AFC and<lb/>
has division rival Oakland next<lb/>
up on their slate. The Broncos<lb/>
have no superstars, but what<lb/>
they do have is a team-oriented<lb/>
squad proficient is every aspect<lb/>
of the game. The Raiders had an<lb/>
opportunity to jump back into<lb/>
the playoff hunt but were devas-<lb/>
tated by a last second touchdown<lb/>
from the Chiefs last week. Denver<lb/>
takes this one 28-17.<lb/>
NY Jets at Carolina<lb/>
Carolina is clicking on all<lb/>
cylinders and the Jets will be the<lb/>
unfortunate recipients of another<lb/>
beating. The Panthers have one<lb/>
of the best receivers in the NFL<lb/>
in Steve Smith who seems to<lb/>
notch career high performances<lb/>
every other game. The Jets are<lb/>
one of the worst offensive teams<lb/>
in football and Brooks Bollinger<lb/>
will get the nod at quarterback.<lb/>
He will be on his back for most<lb/>
of the afternoon in a 30-10 win<lb/>
for Carolina.<lb/>
Washington at Tampa Bay<lb/>
Tampa Bay just doesn't<lb/>
seem as intimidating with an<lb/>
ailing Cadillac Williams and a<lb/>
rookie quarterback under center<lb/>
and Carolina exposed some<lb/>
weaknesses in their defense<lb/>
last week in a 34-14 rout.<lb/>
Don't expect the Redskins to<lb/>
put up that many points, but<lb/>
the combo of Washington's<lb/>
revamped offense and usually<lb/>
stout defense will be enough for<lb/>
a victory. The Redskins remain in<lb/>
the postseason hunt with a 23-<lb/>
21 win.<lb/>
St. Louis at Seattle<lb/>
The Rams have responded in<lb/>
a big way to coach Mike Martz's<lb/>
departure from the team, beat-<lb/>
ing Jacksonville two weeks ago<lb/>
before the bye week last Sunday.<lb/>
St. Louis is giving running back<lb/>
Stephen Jackson more touches<lb/>
to give the offense some much<lb/>
needed balance and St. Louis will<lb/>
also get back injured receivers<lb/>
Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce against<lb/>
the Seahawks. This matchup will<lb/>
have some playoff implications<lb/>
down the road and I'll take the<lb/>
Rams because of their new found<lb/>
dedication to the running game.<lb/>
St. Louis wins 27-20.<lb/>
Dallas at Philadelphia<lb/>
Philly is reeling heading into<lb/>
their NFC East rivalry game with<lb/>
the Cowboys. Terrell Owens is<lb/>
apologizing for his actions, but<lb/>
coach Andy Reid isn't budging<lb/>
on his decision to suspend the<lb/>
standout receiver. He may want<lb/>
to rethink that if Philly will have<lb/>
any hope reaching the playoffs.<lb/>
The Eagles are last in the division<lb/>
with a 4-4 record and their game<lb/>
against the Cowboys is almost a<lb/>
must win situation. I think this<lb/>
season belongs to another squad<lb/>
in the division as the Eagles lose<lb/>
again. I'll take Dallas 20-14.<lb/>

games at Cincinnati, Jacksonville<lb/>
and Seattle are all against teams<lb/>
with winning records. The Colts<lb/>

along with Tennessee, San Diego<lb/>

Because they have beaten<lb/>

the 1972 Dolphins got through<lb/>

pirates mm- cheerleader not involved in sexual conduct<lb/>
ends with 62 receptions for 812<lb/>
yards. Mills ranks second within<lb/>
Conference, behind ECU wide<lb/>
receiver Aundrae Allison in both<lb/>
categories. For his career, the<lb/>
senior is 30 yards shy of 2,000<lb/>
receiving yards.<lb/>
"They utilize him in a lot of<lb/>
different ways Holtz said.<lb/>
"He is our Aundrae. They<lb/>
move him around, put him in<lb/>
motion, play him out oi the back-<lb/>
field, tight end and second tight<lb/>
end. He is one of the things that<lb/>
really make that offense go<lb/>
"One thing that helps us with<lb/>
Garrett being so productive is<lb/>
that he not only will he get the<lb/>
football, but because of his pro-<lb/>
ductivity he will also earn a lot<lb/>
of attention from the defensive<lb/>
perspective said Tulsa head<lb/>
coach Steve Kragthrope at his<lb/>
weekly press conference.<lb/>
"(That) will force the other<lb/>
team to reconfigure their defense<lb/>
to be able to cover Garrett, which<lb/>
also opens up some other players<lb/>
and allows them to catch some<lb/>
more passes<lb/>
Tulsa dropped in the West-<lb/>
ern Division of C-USA last week<lb/>
losing 41-38 to UTEP. The Miners<lb/>
scored a field goal with six sec-<lb/>
onds left to inch out the close<lb/>
win. Tulsa led 38-31 with 8:12<lb/>
left in the fourth quarter before<lb/>
allowing UTEP to score twice<lb/>
within the last four minutes.<lb/>
Missing on the defensive<lb/>
line for ECU will be Marcus<lb/>
Hands. The sophomore pass<lb/>
rusher underwent season-ending<lb/>
shoulder surgery over the week-<lb/>
end. Hands underwent the same<lb/>
surgery on his other shoulder less<lb/>
than a year ago.<lb/>
Kragthrope, listed by many<lb/>
as an up and coming head coach<lb/>
recently signed a multi-year<lb/>
contract to secure him at Tulsa.<lb/>
Kragthrope is the sixth youngest<lb/>
head coach in Division I-A. Holtz,<lb/>
the 11th youngest coach is ust 13<lb/>
months Kragthrope's elder.<lb/>
But personal vendettas aside,<lb/>
the Pirates are backed against<lb/>
a wall. In order to savor their<lb/>
season past the three remaining,<lb/>
ECU must win. The opportunity<lb/>
to become bowl eligible is still<lb/>
obtainable.<lb/>
"The seniors feellike we want to<lb/>
accomplish something this year<lb/>
said team leader Richard Koonce.<lb/>
"We've got to eliminate mis-<lb/>
takes and that's it. Plain and<lb/>
simple, that's what has been<lb/>
beating us all year. If we do that,<lb/>
we'll win<lb/>

Against the Patriots, the Colts<lb/>
ran 38 times and passed 37<lb/>
times.<lb/>
Linebacker Cato June is<lb/>
second in the league in intercep-<lb/>
tions.<lb/>
Pass rushers Robert Mathis<lb/>
and Dwight Freeney are first and<lb/>
eighth in sacks.<lb/>
At plus-9, the Colts are third<lb/>
in the league in turnover ratio.<lb/>
With "only" 14 touchdown<lb/>
passes, Manning is behind his<lb/>
record pace of last year, when<lb/>
he threw 26 by midseason on<lb/>
his way to 49. But Manning says<lb/>
he's just as happy grinding out<lb/>
17-play touchdown drives like the<lb/>
one that gave the Colts the lead<lb/>
for good against New England.<lb/>
"I think defenses are sur-<lb/>
prised we're able to play that<lb/>
game Manning said. "They<lb/>
think, 'Boy, Peyton must be<lb/>
getting frustrated I'm calling a<lb/>
lot of runs myself. Tom Moore<lb/>
(coordinator) has called a lot of<lb/>
pass plays and I'm checking to<lb/>
runs. The fantasy playeis don't<lb/>
like to hear that<lb/>
Both Colts running touch-<lb/>
downs were pass plays Manning<lb/>
changed, once waving three<lb/>
substitutes off the field.<lb/>
Watching from the sidelines<lb/>
was younger brother Ell, the New<lb/>
York Giants quarterback. Peyton<lb/>
watched Eli's game last week<lb/>
against Washington during the<lb/>
Colts' off week.<lb/>
"He had a Halloween party<lb/>
and I dressed up as The King<lb/>
Peyton Manning said. "One of<lb/>
the more enjoyable nights I've<lb/>
had. Nobody recognized me.<lb/>
They recognized me, but they<lb/>
recognized me as Elvis. I might<lb/>
have to bring that back to India-<lb/>

(AP) A Carolina Panthers<lb/>
cheerleader charged with giving<lb/>
police a false name during her<lb/>
arrest at a bar has denied the<lb/>
accounts of some witnesses that<lb/>
she was having sex with another<lb/>
cheerleader in a restroom stall.<lb/>
Renee Thomas, 20, who is also<lb/>
accused of hitting a bar patron, is<lb/>
charged with giving a false name<lb/>
and causing harm to another, a<lb/>
third-degree felony punishable<lb/>
by probation or a jail term of up<lb/>
to five years. The second cheer-<lb/>
leader, Angela Keathley, 26, is<lb/>
charged with disorderly conduct<lb/>
and resisting arrest.<lb/>
The two members of the<lb/>
Panthers TopCats were arrested<lb/>
early Sunday at a bar In Tampa,<lb/>
Fla hours before the Panthers<lb/>
played division rival Tampa<lb/>
Bay. Some witnesses told police<lb/>
the two angered patrons wait-<lb/>
ing in restroom line by having<lb/>
sex in a stall. Another witness<lb/>
discounted the sex story, telling<lb/>
The Tampa Tribune that Thomas<lb/>
was drunk.<lb/>
In a written apology, Thomas'<lb/>
attorney said his client wanted to<lb/>
apologize "to everyone affected<lb/>
by the incident<lb/>
"This was an unfortunate inci-<lb/>
dent which has generated numer-<lb/>
ous rumors and inaccurate facts<lb/>
attorney Peter Anderson wrote.<lb/>
"Miss Thomas denies all allega-<lb/>
tions of any sexual conduct<lb/>
The statement did not spe-<lb/>
cifically address the criminal<lb/>
charges, but said Thomas is<lb/>
cooperating with authorities in<lb/>
Florida. Anderson declined to<lb/>
make any additional comment<lb/>
when reached by telephone<lb/>
Wednesday. Repeated attempts<lb/>
to reach the women have been<lb/>
unsuccessful.<lb/>
Thomas was released before<lb/>
police learned she had given<lb/>
them a driver's license belonging<lb/>
to another Panthers cheerleader,<lb/>
who was not in Tampa. Detec-<lb/>
tives are trying to determine how<lb/>
Thomas got the license.<lb/>
Tampa police spokeswoman<lb/>
Laura McElroy said Tuesday the<lb/>
allegations of sexual conduct<lb/>
"have nothing to do with the<lb/>
charges McElroy said.<lb/>
"The charge is that she<lb/>
(Thomas) punched someone in<lb/>
the face and then she chose to<lb/>
give police a fake ID she said.<lb/>
The cheerleaders were not<lb/>
in town to perform at the game,<lb/>
and the team said both were<lb/>
fired from the TopCats squad<lb/>
for violating a signed code that<lb/>
bans conduct embarrassing to<lb/>
the Panthers.<lb/>
