Domestic violence an<lb />
epidemic in the U.S.<lb />
SCOTT EATON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
A lecture sponsored by<lb />
the women's studies program<lb />
attracted a crowd of students<lb />
Monday and forced the spon-<lb />
sors to find a larger classroom to<lb />
accommodate the attendees.<lb />
Peter Romary, attorney at law,<lb />
spoke about the issue of domes-<lb />
tic violence in America and its<lb />
impact on the economy and<lb />
those who experience it.<lb />
"Every hour, 56 women are<lb />
victimized in the U.S. This year,<lb />
there have been 52 murders<lb />
contributed to domestic<lb />
violence in North Carolina<lb />
said Romary.<lb />
According to Romary, even<lb />
as domestic violence costs the<lb />
economy $67 billion per year and<lb />
the Center for Disease Control<lb />
has categorized it as an epidemic,<lb />
there is little attention and educa-<lb />
tion devoted to this problem.<lb />
"This is a cancer on our soci-<lb />
ety he said.<lb />
Romary began his lecture<lb />
by quoting a question he had<lb />
been asked and posing it to the<lb />
audience.<lb />
"If I go home and beat the s<lb />
out of my wife, what the f" does<lb />
it mean to you?" Romary said.<lb />
The room was silent for<lb />
a long moment as he posed the<lb />
question again.<lb />
"There are more work days lost<lb />
due to violence to women than<lb />
any other reason Romary said.<lb />
Sixty-six percent of all CEOs<lb />
say their business would benefit<lb />
by educating employees about<lb />
the effects of domestic violence,<lb />

CHRIS MUNIER<lb />
NEWS EDITOR<lb />
Domestic violence Is something Romary considers to be an epidemic in the United States.<lb />
tecting women from domestic<lb />
violence include NC Statute<lb />
SOB, which protects all victims<lb />
within any type of relationship,<lb />
NC Statute 50C, which protects<lb />
against stalking and Chapter 95,<lb />
which allows businesses to get<lb />
restraining orders on behalf of<lb />
their employees.<lb />
However, there's a problem<lb />
with the implementation, lack<lb />
of education and enforcement of<lb />
these laws, Romary said.<lb />
Romary asked the audience<lb />
if anyone there knew how to<lb />
get a restraining order. After a<lb />
few valiant attempts by a few<lb />
members of the audience, Romary<lb />
explained how the state of North<lb />
Carolina expects the average<lb />
citizen to know they must go<lb />
to the Civil Division of the Clerks<lb />
Office to get the paperwork and<lb />
the individual must fill it out.<lb />
"It scares me that people are<lb />
not given this information on a<lb />
regular basis Romary said.<lb />
Romary also pointed out that<lb />
there is a problem with non-<lb />
enforcement and a lack of educa-<lb />
tion that renders these statutes<lb />
ineffective.<lb />
Romary cited a U.S. Supreme<lb />
Court case that he argued in<lb />
which the Court said police were<lb />
under no mandate to enforce a<lb />
restraining order. The case was<lb />
Castle Rock v. Gonzalez and<lb />
the mother, who had taken out<lb />
a restraining order against her<lb />
husband, sued the police when,<lb />
after several pleas for help to the<lb />
police went unanswered, the<lb />
husband kidnapped and killed<lb />
her two children.<lb />
"So what is the use of that<lb />
paper if it won't be enforced?"<lb />
Romary said.<lb />
Romary also took issue with<lb />
a local case in which an attorney<lb />
had been arrested for contempt<lb />
of court after the judge appeared<lb />
to have raised his client's bond<lb />
because the judge determined<lb />
the outfit worn by the defendant<lb />
was too nice and, therefore, the<lb />
defendant was under suspicion<lb />
for being a drug dealer.<lb />
"This judge wanted to look<lb />
like he was tough on crime, but<lb />

Last Saturday, retiring UNC<lb />
President Molly Corbett Broad<lb />
was honored at ECU during the<lb />
Educator's Hall of Fame, four days<lb />
following the Board of Gover-<lb />
nors recommendation to install<lb />
Erskine Bowles, former deputy<lb />
White House chief of staff, as her<lb />
successor.<lb />
Broad and 20 other award-<lb />
winners were acknowledged.<lb />
She had been president of the<lb />
UNC system since 1997. She is<lb />
retiring at the conclusion of the<lb />
fall semester.<lb />
"President Broad has been<lb />
instrumental in keeping teacher<lb />
preparation and pre-K-12 initia-<lb />
tives as strategic priorities of<lb />
the UNC System said Marilyn<lb />
Sheerer, dean of the College<lb />
of Education. "She has been a<lb />
champion for public education<lb />
at all levels and models the kind<lb />
of leadership we need to address<lb />
our challenges<lb />
Bowles received a unanimous<lb />
recommendation from the Presi-<lb />
dential Search Committee of the<lb />
University of North Carolina<lb />
Board Of Governors to become<lb />
the sixteenth president.<lb />
"The president's job takes a<lb />
unique blend of skill, character<lb />
and passion. We searched for a<lb />
president who possesses all three<lb />
and no one possesses that blend<lb />
more than Bowles said Bradley<lb />
Wilson, chairman of the Presi-<lb />
dential Search Committee. "The<lb />
president must understand at a<lb />
deep level the teaching, research<lb />
and outreach that constitute<lb />
the mission of the University of<lb />
North Carolina. The challenge<lb />
for the president is also to have<lb />
a good understanding of how to<lb />
assemble the resources to carry<lb />
out that mission - Bowles has<lb />
both<lb />
Wilson and the search team<lb />
looked at 80 possible candidates<lb />
to take Broad's position. They<lb />
eventually chose Bowles, who<lb />
will take over, effective Jan. 1,<lb />
2006.<lb />
"We were fortunate to have<lb />
met with some extraordinary<lb />
people, but Erskine Bowles<lb />
matched up closely with the<lb />
presidential qualities listed in the<lb />
Board's Leadership Statement<lb />
Wilson said. "In the end, the<lb />
search committee concluded it<lb />
would have been unfair to dis-<lb />
close the identities of the other<lb />
applicants when Erskine Bowles<lb />
had unanimous support from the<lb />
committee<lb />
The Leadership Statement<lb />
holds the duties, responsibili-<lb />
ties and character necessities<lb />
involved with being president of<lb />
the 16-constituent UNC system.<lb />
Thepresidentis expected to"build<lb />
consensus and establish a singular<lb />
vision for the University accord-<lb />

Alpha Kappa Alpha sponsors<lb />
breast cancer fundraiser<lb />
Hope Is part of the message In fighting breast cancer in America.<lb />
Sorority raises awareness<lb />
with bracelets and<lb />
information<lb />
RACHEL KING<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Last week, Alpha Kappa Alpha<lb />
took the initiative to fight breast<lb />
cancer by raising money and<lb />
educating students passing by<lb />
Wright Plaza.<lb />
This year alone, it is estimated<lb />
that 40,410 women will die in the<lb />
United States of breast cancer.<lb />
This figure, prqvided by<lb />
The American Cancer Society,<lb />
prompted the sisters of Alpha<lb />
Kappa Alpha to act. Alpha Kappa<lb />
Alpha provides "service to all<lb />
mankind and they provided<lb />
it this month by sponsoring a<lb />
fundraiser designed to promote<lb />
awareness at ECU and give back<lb />
to the community in a unique<lb />
way.<lb />
"We try to incorporate pro-<lb />
grams every month, and we have<lb />
national program targets that<lb />
we are required to target each<lb />
month said Yolanda Mitchell,<lb />
Alpha Kappa Alpha member and<lb />
junior special education major.<lb />
It was decided that since<lb />
October is Breast Cancer Aware-<lb />
ness Month, the sorority would<lb />
order and sell 100 pink breast<lb />
cancer bracelets, modeled<lb />
after the ever-popular, yellow<lb />
"Livestrong" bracelets, made<lb />
famous by Lance Armstrong.<lb />
Every day last week from 10<lb />
a.m. to 2 p.m several members<lb />
of Alpha Kappa Alpha set up a<lb />
table in front of Wright Place<lb />
and covered it in information,<lb />
including breast cancer fliers<lb />
from ECU'S Student Health Ser-<lb />
vice, pink ribbons attached to<lb />
statistics and the bracelets, which<lb />
sold for $2 each.<lb />
By Wednesday morning, 70<lb />
of the 100 bracelets had been<lb />
sold. In addition, people were<lb />
making donations, sometimes in<lb />
amounts of up to $20.<lb />
"The fundraiser has really<lb />
exceeded our expectations<lb />
because we have raised a lot of<lb />
money and, basically, people<lb />
have come up to us and told<lb />
us they have family members<lb />
touched by breast cancer said<lb />
Adriane Spivey, Alpha Kappa<lb />
Alpha member and junior nurs-<lb />
ing major.<lb />
"It's benefiting a lot of people<lb />
here at ECU a lot of people have<lb />
come up to the table and bought<lb />
bracelets because they've had<lb />
a loved one with breast cancer<lb />
 it's a worthy cause Mitchell<lb />
said.<lb />
Although the sorority has<lb />
not decided exactly where the<lb />
funds will go, Mitchell said the<lb />
money will be given to either<lb />
a local or national breast cancer<lb />
foundation, where it can be put<lb />
to its intended use. The sorority<lb />
will conduct a meeting Sunday<lb />
to decide the final destination<lb />
of the money.<lb />
Alpha Kappa Alpha is not<lb />
the only campus organization<lb />
attempting to educate the ECU<lb />
community. ECU Student Health<lb />
Services, who contributed fliers<lb />
for the table, also "provides<lb />
education concerning breast<lb />
health, breast exams and con-<lb />
sults with students about any<lb />
breast health concerns Student<lb />
Health Services can be reached<lb />

breast cancer, including impor-<lb />
tant statistics, prevention and<lb />
risk factors, readers may consider<lb />

Society's Web site at cancer.org.<lb />
"Everybody in some way has<lb />
been touched by breast cancer,<lb />
- whether it is a mother, grand-<lb />
mother, family or friends said<lb />
Amber Jones, Alpha Kappa Alpha<lb />
member and senior psychology<lb />
major.<lb />
"It's very important that we<lb />
make the effort to make the com-<lb />
munity aware of this issue<lb />
This is especially true in con-<lb />
sideration of the fact that there<lb />
is much about breast cancer that<lb />
researchers still do not under-<lb />
stand.<lb />
"Seventy percent of breast<lb />
cancer patients have none of the<lb />
classical risk factors according<lb />
to Student Health Services.<lb />
"Women may create a false<lb />
sense of security for themselves<lb />
and may suffer from needless<lb />
excessive worry<lb />
However, women are not the<lb />
only ones who need to know<lb />
the risk factors. The American<lb />

African Union soldiers were captured in the Darfur region of Sudan until their release on Sunday.<lb />
Darfur rebels release 36 African<lb />

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP)<lb />
 Rebels have freed 36 mem-<lb />
bers of an African Union team,<lb />
including an American moni-<lb />
tor, who were kidnapped in<lb />
Sudan's western Darfur region,<lb />
an AU spokesman said Monday<lb />
as international envoys warned<lb />
the region was again sliding into<lb />
violence.<lb />
Two members of the team, its<lb />
Senegalese leader and a transla-<lb />
tor were still being held, and an<lb />
AU military high commander<lb />
has gone to the Tine region near<lb />
the border with Chad to negoti-<lb />
ate their release, said Noured-<lb />
dine Mezni, spokesman for the<lb />
African Union in Khartoum. The<lb />
36 were set free late Sunday, he<lb />
said in an e-mail statement that<lb />
gave no details on where the<lb />
detainees were released.<lb />
The abductions occurred a<lb />
day after two AU troops were<lb />
killed by another rebel group<lb />
- the first fatalities suffered by<lb />
the pan-African body since it<lb />
deployed peacekeepers to Darfur<lb />
in April 2004.<lb />
"The international commu-<lb />
nity should be very alarmed by<lb />
these events because the situation<lb />
is getting out of hand and we are<lb />
sliding backwards Baba Gana<lb />
Kingibe, the organization's top<lb />
envoy to Darfur, told The Asso-<lb />
ciated Press. "We have had some<lb />
very terrible tragedies, but this is<lb />
one of the lowest points, if not<lb />
the lowest, that we have had<lb />
Kingibe's concerns were<lb />
echoed by a top United Nations<lb />
envoy, who said Darfur could<lb />
again be engulfed by the type<lb />
of indiscriminate violence that<lb />
made it one of the world's worst<lb />
humanitarian disasters two<lb />
years ago.<lb />
"We have not turned the<lb />
corner Juan Mendez, the U.N.<lb />
special adviser on the prevention<lb />
of genocide, said Monday days<lb />
after returning from a trip to the<lb />
region and delivering a report<lb />
to the U.N. Security Council. "I<lb />
found the situation much more<lb />
dangerous and worrisome than I<lb />
expected it to be<lb />
U.S. Ambassador John Bolton<lb />
raised the possibility of new sanc-<lb />
tions against Sudan, saying the<lb />
council needed to do more about<lb />
worsening security. He later told<lb />
The Associated Press that one<lb />
possibility was to put more con-<lb />
trols on weapons flowing into<lb />
the country.<lb />
"Sanctions were put in before,<lb />
it's not clear they're being adhered<lb />
to Bolton told AP. "The question<lb />
(is) whether we should do some-<lb />
thing else in that area in terms of<lb />
arms into the country<lb />
The Sudanese government<lb />
has condemned the abduction<lb />
and killing of AU mission mem-<lb />
bers in Sudan but said it was up<lb />
to the African Union to stop the<lb />
attacks. Khartoum also urged<lb />
the international community to<lb />
pressure rebels in Darfur to abide<lb />
by a cease-fire agreement signed<lb />
with the government.<lb />
"Serious measures should be<lb />
taken by the African Union to<lb />
halt this targeting of (its) per-<lb />
sonnel, of the civilians and of<lb />
relief workers in Darfur by the<lb />
rebels" the official Sudan news<lb />

State<lb />
NC chief Justice: Courts may<lb />
suspend consideration of civil<lb />
cases<lb />
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) - Courts<lb />
may suspend consideration of civil<lb />
cases until prosecutors catch up<lb />
with criminal cases if legislators don't<lb />
increase spending on state courts,<lb />
North Carolina's chief justice says.<lb />
"I have a plan Chief Justice I. Beverly<lb />
Lake Jr. said Monday during a speech<lb />
to more than 100 lawyers and judges<lb />
at a meeting of the Forsyth County<lb />
Bar Association. "We're not going to<lb />
try any civil cases until we get criminal<lb />
where it needs to be"<lb />
Lake, 71, who has about three<lb />
months before he retires from the<lb />
N.C. Supreme Court, criticized the<lb />
Legislature's allocations to state<lb />
courts as being inadequate.<lb />
Legislators approved $310 million for<lb />
courts In the state budget for 2005-<lb />
06, Lake said. The courts got nearly<lb />
$383 million in state money for 2003-<lb />
04, according the N.C. Administrative<lb />
Office of the Courts.<lb />
"They have been nickeling-and-<lb />
diming us to death Lake said. The<lb />
message has gotten to them, but why<lb />
they won't accept it, I don't know<lb />
After his speech, Lake said the<lb />
caseload continues to Increase even<lb />
while the courts' budget gets smaller.<lb />
That threatens both defendants' rights<lb />
to speedy trials and public safety,<lb />
he said.<lb />
For example, it's possible for a charge<lb />
to be dismissed and a defendant<lb />
released If it's determined that a<lb />
defendant's constitutional right to a<lb />
speedy trial was violated.<lb />
Nearly 70,500 cases were pending<lb />
in criminal Superior Court at the end<lb />
of 2000-01, according to state court<lb />
statistics. That number increased to<lb />
79,424 at the end of 2004-05.<lb />
Half the pending cases in criminal<lb />
Superior Court were older than 205<lb />
days at the end of 2000-01, the<lb />
statistics showed. At the end of 2004-<lb />
05, half were older than 221 days.<lb />
About 21,000 cases were pending<lb />
in civil Superior Court at the end of<lb />
2004-05.<lb />
Lake encouraged the lawyers to<lb />
"bore in" on legislators because<lb />
more courts and programs could be<lb />
established with more state money.<lb />

Bushes pitch In with Gulf Coast<lb />
rebuilding<lb />
COVINGTON, La. (AP) - President<lb />
Bush pledged Tuesday that the<lb />
federal government will not seek<lb />
to dictate terms for rebuilding the<lb />
hurricane-devastated Gulf Coast but<lb />
would allow state and local officials<lb />
to make key decisions. He rejoiced<lb />
In what he said is a spirit of revival<lb />
there.<lb />
"I think we've seen the spirits change<lb />
Bush said in an Interview with NBC's<lb />
Today" show. "Local people are<lb />
beginning to realize there's hope In<lb />
the Interview, both he and his wife,<lb />
Laura, defended his choice of Harriet<lb />
Miers for the Supreme Court. Bush<lb />
reiterated his statement of last week<lb />
that he was confident she would be<lb />
confirmed by the Senate.<lb />
Bush and his wife were interviewed at<lb />
a Habitat for Humanity work site, in a<lb />
town just north of New Orleans where<lb />
the nonprofit organization is building<lb />
houses for displaced people.<lb />
In response to the government's<lb />
Initially slow response to Hurricane<lb />
Katrina, Bush said, "If I didn't respond<lb />
well enough, I'm going to leam the<lb />
lessons The federal government's<lb />
response to the second huge storm<lb />
to slam the area, Rita, has gotten<lb />
better reviews.<lb />
Tne story will unfold. I mean, the facts<lb />
of the story will come out over time,<lb />
and the important thing is for federal,<lb />
state and local governments to adjust<lb />
and to respond Bush said.<lb />
The president and his wife joined<lb />
other volunteers, driving nails into a<lb />
sheet of plywood with a hammer.<lb />
Bush rejected criticism from<lb />
Democrats that his visits to the<lb />
region, this was his eighth, were<lb />
largely picture-taking opportunities for<lb />
publicity and that his administration<lb />
lacked a coherent reconstruction<lb />
plan.<lb />
"I don't think Washington ought<lb />
to dictate to New Orleans how to<lb />
rebuild he said. Bush said he had<lb />
told Ray Nagin, the Democratic mayor<lb />
of New Orleans, over dinner the night<lb />
before that "we will support the plan<lb />
that you develop<lb />
On other subjects in the NBC<lb />
interview, Bush:<lb />
- Defended his Supreme Court choice<lb />
against criticism by some members<lb />
of the political right who feel let<lb />
down because of Mler's lack of a<lb />
conservative record. "My answer is<lb />
Harriet Miers is going to be confirmed<lb />
and people will get to see why I put<lb />
her on the bench he said.<lb />
- Predicted that the Oct. 15 Iraqi<lb />
elections on a new constitution would<lb />
be marked by violence from "a group<lb />
of terrorists and killers who want to<lb />
stop the advance of democracy<lb />
And, Bush said, "I also expect people<lb />
to vote<lb />
- Expressed confidence that the<lb />
government would develop a plan "to<lb />
handle a major outbreak" of bird flu if<lb />
it spreads to this country.<lb />
- Declined to discuss a federal grand<lb />
jury investigation that includes an<lb />
inquiry into the role, if any, that top<lb />
adviser Karl Rove played in disclosing<lb />
the identity of an undercover CIA<lb />
agent. "I'm not going to talk about the<lb />
case. It's under review. Thank you for<lb />
asking Bush said tersely.<lb />

Insurgents kill dozens of Iraqis<lb />
ahead of the constitutional<lb />
referendum<lb />
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Insurgents<lb />
determined to wreck Iraq's<lb />
constitutional referendum killed<lb />
more than 40 people and wounded<lb />
dozens in a series of attacks Tuesday,<lb />
including a suicide car bomb that<lb />
ripped apart a crowded market in a<lb />
town near the Syrian border, police<lb />
said.<lb />
U.S. and Iraqi officials have repeatedly<lb />
warned that the insurgents would<lb />
step up their attacks to undermine<lb />
Saturday's referendum, a crucial step<lb />
oUOdn from page A1<lb />
The government said it was<lb />
committed to continuing nego-<lb />
tiations to resolve the crisis in<lb />
the western region.<lb />
The AU has condemned the<lb />
rebel killings and kidnappings,<lb />
describing them as major viola-<lb />
tions of the shaky cease-fire deal<lb />
aimed at ending the Darfur con-<lb />
flict that started in 2003 and has<lb />
claimed the lives of more than<lb />
180,000 people<lb />
The violence began after<lb />
rebels took up arms against gov-<lb />
ernment forces, rising up against<lb />
what it regarded as years of state<lb />
neglect. Sudanese authorities are<lb />
accused of subsequently unleash-<lb />
ing militias known as thejanja-<lb />
weed against the rebels, fanning<lb />
a conflict that has sparked what<lb />
the U.N. has called the world's<lb />
worst humanitarian crisis.<lb />
The AU members and one<lb />
American were taken hostage<lb />
by the Justice and Equality<lb />
Movement, a dissident faction<lb />
of one of two main Darfur rebel<lb />
groups, said Adam Thiam, a<lb />
spokesman for AU Commission<lb />
Chairman Alpha Oumar Konare.<lb />
The freed American may have<lb />
been part of a support group that<lb />
is helping the AU mission in<lb />
Darfur by providing logistics and<lb />
helping fly in troops, according<lb />
to an AU official who asked not to<lb />
be identified because he was not<lb />
authorized to speak to the media.<lb />
The other hostages included<lb />
AU military observers, civilian<lb />
police and a Justice and Equality<lb />
Movement official, theof f icial said.<lb />
The AU first deployed to<lb />
Sudan with less than SOO peace-<lb />
keepers, but its mission has grown<lb />
to 6,200 with financial and logis-<lb />
tical support from the EU, the<lb />
United States and others.<lb />
The African Union also<lb />
accused the other main Darfur<lb />
rebel group, the Sudan Liberation<lb />
Army, of ambushing an AU patrol<lb />
Saturday and killing two Nige-<lb />
rian soldiers and two Sudanese<lb />
drivers attached to the team in<lb />
South Darfur.<lb />
The violence occurred in a<lb />
territory that is largely controlled<lb />
by the rebel group and has a his-<lb />
tory of previous rebel interference<lb />
and attacks against African Union<lb />
teams, said an AU statement.<lb />

"I've been shocked at how many<lb />

In the deadliest attack in nearly two<lb />
weeks, a suicide car bomb exploded<lb />
at about 11 a.m. in a crowded open<lb />
market in the northwestern town of Tal<lb />
Afar, killing 30 Iraqis and wounding<lb />
45, said Brig. Najim Abdullah, Tal<lb />
Afar's police chief. US and Iraqi forces<lb />
routed insurgents in a major offensive<lb />
there last month.<lb />
He said all the victims appeared to be<lb />
civilians since no Iraqi or U.S. forces<lb />
were in the center of Tal Afar, which is<lb />
260 miles northwest of Baghdad.<lb />
Insurgents also used two suicide car<lb />
bombs, three roadside bombs and<lb />
four drive-by shootings in the capital<lb />
on Tuesday to kill a total of 14 Iraqis;<lb />
29 were wounded, police said.<lb />
The worst attack involved a suicide<lb />
car bomb that exploded about noon<lb />
at an Iraqi army checkpoint in a busy<lb />
area of western Baghdad, killing eight<lb />
Iraqi soldiers and one civilian and<lb />
wounding 12 soldiers, said police<lb />
Capt. Qassim Hussein.<lb />
The violence came four days<lb />
ahead of Iraq's key vote on the<lb />
draft constitution, which Kurds and<lb />
the majority Shiites largely support<lb />
dnd the Sunni Arab minority rejects.<lb />
Sunnis are campaigning to defeat the<lb />
charter at the polls, although officials<lb />
from all sides have been trying up to<lb />
the last minute to decide on changes<lb />
to the constitution to swing Sunni<lb />
support.<lb />
Many Sunnis fear the document<lb />
would create nearly autonomous<lb />
Kurdish and Shiite mini-states in<lb />
the north and south, where Iraq's<lb />
oil wealth is located, and leave<lb />
most Sunnis Isolated in central and<lb />
western Iraq under a weak central<lb />
government in Baghdad. Whether the<lb />
constitution passes or fails, Iraq is due<lb />
to hold elections for a new parliament<lb />
on Dec. 15.<lb />
Militants are demanding that Iraqis<lb />
boycott the referendum and have<lb />
killed at least 384 people in the last<lb />
16 days In a series of attacks.<lb />
In another development, a top<lb />
election official said Tuesday that<lb />
Iraqi law will allow Saddam Hussein<lb />
and thousands-of other detainees<lb />
who have not been brought to trial to<lb />
vote in the referendum.<lb />
However, Abdul Hussein Hindawi,<lb />
one of the eight highest-ranking<lb />
officials on the Independent Electoral<lb />
Commission in Iraq, also said the<lb />
organization was still awaiting a full<lb />
list from the Interior Ministry and the<lb />
U.Sled coalition of the detainees<lb />
who should be allowed to receive<lb />
copies of the draft constitution and to<lb />
vote at Abu Ghraib prison and several<lb />
other U.S. detention centers.<lb />

Warning! Hilton fans may not enjoy this<lb />
Why do people admire Paris<lb />
Hilton?<lb />
BENJAMIN CORMACK<lb />
CASUAL OBSERVER<lb />
She is everywhere, everyone is talk-<lb />
ing about her and, apparently, everyone<lb />
wants to be like her: skinny, sexy, rich<lb />
and famous. I guess I can't really blame<lb />
them. Of course I'm talking about<lb />
Paris Hilton. While others may have<lb />
jumped on the we-love-Paris-Hilton-<lb />
bandwagon, I just don't see a reason<lb />
to get on it.<lb />
Why do people like or at least<lb />
appear to like Paris Hilton so much?<lb />
As I recall, she came into the public<lb />
eye out of relative obscurity. I mean,<lb />
I never knew the Hilton family had a<lb />
daughter named Paris. Next thing you<lb />
know, she has a TV show in the works<lb />
and a certain video floating around<lb />
cyberspace. Next thing you know, she<lb />
is a household name, inspiring fashion<lb />
and generally doing anything to grab<lb />
people's attention, and she continues<lb />
to do so.<lb />
I've seen and heard a few examples<lb />
of what could be considered inspired<lb />
by Paris Hilton. I've read in the Pirate<lb />
Rants about people discussing the<lb />
"big ugly" sunglasses some women<lb />
are wearing around campus. Now I'm<lb />
not certain about this, but isn't this a<lb />
trend started by Paris? Most of the times<lb />
I've seen her on TV, she was wearing<lb />
sunglasses, but I really wasn't paying<lb />
enough attention to her to really say for<lb />
certain what they looked like. Then a<lb />
few weeks ago, I saw a group of people<lb />
talking in the entrance room of my<lb />
dorm, apparently studying or working<lb />
on a project together, and one of them<lb />
had two little black dogs with her. The<lb />
dogs were sitting in a stroller. Now<lb />
this is something I know can connect<lb />
to Paris because it is one of the most<lb />
bizarre and annoying things about her.<lb />
Why did she carry that dog, a chihua-<lb />
hua named Tinkerbell, around with her<lb />
like some kind of fashion accessory?<lb />
Now I've heard that Paris has left Tin-<lb />
kerbell at home with her mother sports<lb />
a smaller Chihuahua named Bambi.<lb />
Tinkerbell apparently got too big for<lb />
her to carry around.<lb />
Apparently, I'm not the only one<lb />
who thinks Paris is not a great pet<lb />
owner. The organization known as<lb />
People For The Ethical Treatment Of<lb />
Animals (PETA) has come down on Paris<lb />
for treating Tinkerbell like something<lb />
she's grown out of. One spokesman<lb />
for PETA said, "It's a pity that Paris's<lb />
heart doesn't match her pocketbook.<lb />
Animals shouldn't be disposed of like<lb />
last season's trendy handbag<lb />
My confusion about Paris Hilton's<lb />
popularity goes beyond her relation-<lb />
ship with her pets. I just don't find her<lb />
very attractive. She doesn't even look<lb />
real to me - she looks like some kind<lb />
of living, life-size Barbie doll. Her skin<lb />
looks like it would feel like plastic and<lb />
the color would rub-off onto my hands.<lb />
I don't know if that is her original nose,<lb />
but if isn't I'd ask for my money back.<lb />
It just doesn't look right. Finally, Paris<lb />
has this image that I can only define as<lb />
non-unique. I don't know if it's because<lb />
so many people are copying her style, if<lb />
she is just promoting the latest fashions<lb />
or wearing what a lot of other people<lb />
are wearing, but there is nothing I can<lb />
see about her that stands out and makes<lb />
her unique among all the other faces of<lb />
celebrity-dom or even of this campus.<lb />
I can't even stand to watch her<lb />
TV show. She and Nicole Richie, or<lb />
whoever it is she has got following her<lb />
around now, go around from one differ-<lb />
ent place to another. Paris then finds a<lb />
bunch of ways to either degrade herself<lb />
or act like she's better than the people<lb />
she meets, and it's all good because<lb />
she has more money than most of<lb />
us, maybe even all of us put together,<lb />
will ever make in a lifetime. The thing<lb />
is, though, most of her money is not<lb />
money that she earned. It's money<lb />
that her parents earned, and if things<lb />
go well for Paris, she'll be running the<lb />
family business someday. So she has<lb />
very little to work for and because of<lb />
this, I would imagine she has a very big<lb />
void in her life. Maybe daddy-Hilton<lb />
was too busy running his fancy, over-<lb />
priced hotels to pay attention to her.<lb />
I can't take Paris seriously because<lb />
she seems like a little girl who wants<lb />
people to pay attention to her and will<lb />
do whatever it takes to get attention<lb />
and take any she can get. I mean how<lb />
does someone with her "social stand-<lb />
ing" and "popularity" end up doing a<lb />
Burger King commercial? I mean Darius<lb />
Rucker from Hootie and the Blowfish<lb />
dressed up in a cowboy outfit for one of<lb />
their commercials. When was the last<lb />
time you saw him before that? I think<lb />
Paris needs a better agent.<lb />
Paris Hilton has done one thing<lb />
that makes her seem like not such a<lb />
bad person. Apparently she and a few<lb />
other celebrities earned money to help<lb />
victims of Hurricane Katrina by auc-<lb />
tioning themselves out for dates. Some<lb />
high ranking socialite paid $200,000<lb />
for an evening with Paris. Now whether<lb />
or not that will be featured on "The<lb />
Simple Life" I don't know. Frankly<lb />
there's a lot of things I could buy with<lb />
$200,000 that I could find entertain-<lb />
ing, but Paris Hilton isn't one of them.<lb />
Maybe if Paris Hilton was famous for<lb />
doing something worthy of being<lb />
admired on a regular basis, I would have<lb />
a different opinion. Until then, I'll let<lb />
that bandwagon roll on by.<lb />
In My Opinion<lb />
Fighting obesity with a food 'fat tax'<lb />
(KRT) It seems that Americans<lb />
are constantly getting pelted with sci-<lb />
entific studies that tell us that we are fat<lb />
and getting fatter by the minute. The<lb />
latest round of bad news was brought<lb />
to us courtesy of researchers at Boston<lb />
University who have been gathering<lb />
health data on a group of 4,000 adults<lb />
for the last 30 years.<lb />
Their conclusion: a jaw-dropping<lb />
nine out of 10 men and seven out of<lb />
10 women will become overweight at<lb />
some point in their lives. And those<lb />
of us who have managed to keep the<lb />
weight monster at bay into middle<lb />
age shouldn't be too smug. Half the<lb />
people in the study who reached the<lb />
summer of their lives without a weight<lb />
problem eventually joined the ranks of<lb />
the "large" majority.<lb />
Although the numbers were a little<lb />
higher than expected, they don't (or<lb />
shouldn't, at least) come as a complete<lb />
shock to anyone. Our culture, our life-<lb />
styles, and our work habits all conspire<lb />
against us in the battle to stay fit.<lb />
Foods that are high in calories and<lb />
low in food value are tasty, plentiful<lb />
and convenient, and many of our best-<lb />
paying jobs and most popular leisure<lb />
activities have us sitting nearly motion-<lb />
less in front of video displays for hours<lb />
and hours on end.<lb />
The government has responded to the<lb />
situation by encouraging us to eat right<lb />
and get more exercise. They even came<lb />
up with a colorful new food pyramid to<lb />
illustrate the latest scientific thinking on<lb />
what constitutes a healthy diet.<lb />
Yeah, I'm sure that's going to help.<lb />
We may as well hope for the Fat Fairy<lb />
to come along while we're sleeping and<lb />
magically make us all thin with a wave<lb />
of her skinny wand.<lb />
If the government really wants to<lb />
do something about the obesity epi-<lb />
demic, it needs to stick to what it knows<lb />
best. And that's raising taxes.<lb />
The government could calculate a<lb />
"fat tax" that would be tied directly to<lb />
the relative calorie content of each food<lb />
item we buy compared to its overall<lb />
nutritional value. The more "empty<lb />
calories" a food provides, the higher<lb />
the tax. Fresh fruits and vegetables<lb />
would of course be taxed at 0 percent,<lb />
but potato chips, french fries and ice<lb />
cream would be hit really hard.<lb />
How does $5 for a large fry sound?<lb />
Or $20 for a triple-decker bacon cheese-<lb />
burger? Not too good, right? Well<lb />
that's the idea. I'll bet we'd think twice<lb />
before pigging out on junk food six<lb />
days a week if our pocketbooks were hit<lb />
harder when we went that route.<lb />
After all, despite all the noise that<lb />
conservationists have been making for<lb />
years about the importance of cutting<lb />
back on fossil fuel use, the average<lb />
American couldn't be bothered with<lb />
such nonsense until gasoline hit $3 a<lb />
gallon. Now everyone wants a hybrid.<lb />
The same motivation would undoubt-<lb />
edly work if it was applied to the kinds<lb />
of food that are most responsible for<lb />
increasing our waist lines.<lb />
So where would the extra money<lb />
go? My advice would be to use it<lb />
to finance tax credits to reimburse<lb />
companies that provide their employ-<lb />
ees with an hour of fully compensated<lb />
time each day to be used for vigorous<lb />
exercise.<lb />
People would be forced, by financial<lb />
necessity, to eat more healthy foods and<lb />
they'd be rewarded with an extra hour<lb />
of time off each workday to go out and<lb />
take a walk, go swimming or ride a bike.<lb />
It wouldn't completely solve the obesity<lb />
epidemic, but I guarantee you my plan<lb />
would make a significant impact.<lb />
Of course, it's unlikely such a plan<lb />
would win the popular support it would<lb />
need to become reality. We've already<lb />
had to give up our SUVs. It would be<lb />
cruel and unusual to make us give up<lb />
McDonald's and Krispy Kreme as well.<lb />
I mean, there has to be some pleasure<lb />
in life, right?<lb />
Pirate Rant<lb />
It must be Wednesday again. All the<lb />
fraternitiessororities are wearing their<lb />
"cool" letters!<lb />
W. stole my lunch money. Then he<lb />
beat me up behind the dumpster. I'm<lb />
telling Barbara.<lb />
Looks like I'll be clogging my arteries<lb />
with Sbarros pizza and chicken wraps<lb />
since rotten salads are the only thing<lb />
available on campus.<lb />
Yes I am Anti Greek, and Yes I will be<lb />
attending Reggae on the Lake. That's the<lb />
only thing you Greek people have going<lb />
for you. All the other parties are lame so<lb />
don't worry, I wont be attending.<lb />
Honestly, is it that hard to remember<lb />
you set an alarm? If you're going to<lb />
nave the most god-awful noise for an<lb />
alarm clock, as least have the decency<lb />
to shut it off when you get up. The rest<lb />
of the floor does NOT enjoy hearing<lb />
your alarm go off from 6 in the morn-<lb />
ing to about 9.<lb />
Sperrys, Rainbows, Uniqueness, Indi-<lb />
viduality, they are all fads and ways to<lb />
conform to society. People need to get<lb />
a grip and stop classifying people on the<lb />
outside. Check out the inside first!<lb />
I love how everyone complains about<lb />
politics. No one is forcing you to live in<lb />
this country, and if you don't like the<lb />
way things are going, ust leave. Go live<lb />
in a country where you have no control<lb />
over any facet of your life.<lb />
For all of the sociology grad students,<lb />
who talk so grammatically correct and<lb />
look down on everyone else, grow up,<lb />
until you apply that degree you aren't<lb />
anything!<lb />
Why is it that TEC never prints articles<lb />
about the crimes that actually occur on<lb />
campus? Two major drug dealers have<lb />
been arrested on campus (in dorms, no<lb />
less) in the last few weeks and yet no<lb />
mention of them, or any other crime on<lb />
campus, has been made in your paper.<lb />
The students should be better informed<lb />
about what is going on around them,<lb />
and TEC has a responsibility to help.<lb />
What happened to all the shiny new<lb />
Red Sox's hats? Did the bandwagon<lb />
break down or something?<lb />
To the girl on the track at the SRC in<lb />
the blue shorts: Do you mind if I tell<lb />
you, you are the most beautiful girl in<lb />
the world?<lb />
Last time 1 checked, 1 was sure that<lb />
sidewalks were not strictly for one-way<lb />
traffic. I'd like to get up the Hill without<lb />
dodging your mobs, thank you.<lb />
Friends don't let friends whine in the<lb />
Pirate Rant.<lb />
To the guy that gave me a cappuccino<lb />
outside of West End last night. Thank<lb />
you so much, you really made my day,<lb />
and helped me remember that there<lb />
are a few good and selfless people left<lb />
on this campus.<lb />
Anyone thinking about living in<lb />
Fletcher next semester should get to<lb />
know the coordinator first then you<lb />
will rethink your decision. What used<lb />
to be a fun and popular dorm has now<lb />
turned into hell!<lb />
When did the library become a family<lb />
day care center? Take your baby carriage<lb />
and get out. Some of us are actually<lb />
trying to study, and your crying baby<lb />
isn't helping us concentrate.<lb />
Where was everyone when Chuck D<lb />
was on campus?<lb />
For all of you 18 to 20-something's still<lb />
living off Mama and Daddy's dime, you<lb />
may not be so liberal when you get out<lb />
into the real world.<lb />
Why is it that a certain rapper has the<lb />
audacity to say that Bush doesn't like<lb />
black people and the government isn't<lb />
giving enough to the hurricane victims<lb />
when you watch cribs on MTV, all<lb />
the rappers are driving 350,000 cars?<lb />
They are lucky they give $10,000 to<lb />
the cause (minimal donation) and<lb />
expect everyone else to foot the bill or<lb />
we are racist?<lb />
It would lie great if the TEC would write<lb />
articles worth reading! I pick up a copy<lb />
every day out of sheer haoit, and every<lb />
day it takes me two minutes to look<lb />
through and see that, yet again There<lb />
is nothing worth my time to read.<lb />
So the school can afford all the repairs<lb />
in the Old Cafeteria Complex, but they<lb />
can't put more streetlights on the Mall<lb />
so that students don't have to worry<lb />
about getting jumped when they are<lb />
trying to walk around campus at night.<lb />
Although ECU has always been much<lb />
better at being retroactive than they<lb />
ever were at being proactive.<lb />
I'm tired of school. Whatever.<lb />
Why is that Java City has a total<lb />
monopoly over the coffee available<lb />
here on campus to students yet, when<lb />
you go to order they're always out of<lb />
the drink you were craving, never have<lb />
skim milk, don't have smoothie mix,<lb />
the bagels haven't arrived, they don't<lb />
have the syrup you want, and finally<lb />
when you settle on just getting a plain<lb />
cup of coffee.<lb />
To all of the whiney freshman who<lb />
think that they have too much home-<lb />
work, hard professors and demand-<lb />
ing schedules: Shut your lips. Oh my<lb />
God (Valley girl inflection for extra<lb />
sarcasm). You didn't actually think<lb />
that university life would come with<lb />
high expectations, difficult challenges<lb />
and standards of achievement, did<lb />
you? Suckers. Tap that keg. Oversleep<lb />
through that class. Funnel your parent s<lb />
hard earned money into a black hole of<lb />
academic failure and malaise. You're just<lb />
making the job market less competitive<lb />
for me. Quit your bellyaching and join<lb />
a study group for Jehovah's sake.<lb />
To those people who use their cell phones<lb />
on the bus, ifyou want your conversation<lb />
with your rriendsfarnilysignlficant<lb />
other to be private, DONT have that<lb />
conversation on a bus full of students and<lb />
expect them not to overhear your loud,<lb />
obnoxious arguments, ALL the details of<lb />
your sex life, or your personal problems.<lb />
We don't want to hear it, and I bet you<lb />
really don't want us to either.<lb />

Small cars rule the world<lb />
T<lb />
The newest fads in the<lb />
car craze<lb />
TOMEKASTEELE<lb />
SENIOR WRITER<lb />
Horoscopes:<lb />
This year has seen a whole<lb />
host of new cars and car acces-<lb />
sories, but the one that sticks<lb />
out the most are smaller vehicles.<lb />
Hybrids, Beetles, Scions and Mini<lb />
Coopers made by various car<lb />
companies are flying off the lot.<lb />
Evidently, if it's small, it's hot.<lb />
Smaller compact cars are<lb />
being seen on the hottest televi-<lb />
sion shows, and many celebrities<lb />
are doing away with large SUV's<lb />
for customized Mini Cars with<lb />
English style. The design Euro-<lb />
pean cars have been utilizing for<lb />
years is making its way to the<lb />
U.S and we are catching on that<lb />
bigger isn't necessarily better.<lb />
One reason smaller cars are<lb />
taking over is because they run so<lb />
much better on gas. In the midst<lb />
of today's ever-rising gas prices,<lb />
conservation of money is a huge<lb />
factor in a buyer's mind. This is<lb />
why more people are choosing<lb />
the Honda Civic Hybrid when<lb />
considering fuel efficiency.<lb />
The 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid<lb />
was rated the third most fuel<lb />
efficient car sold in the U.S. based I<lb />
on the Environment Protection 2<lb />
Agency miles-per gallon ratings <lb />
for city and highway travel. The <lb />
Hybrid has a small, sleek appear-1<lb />
ance and costs around $20,000. r<lb />
The Hybrid is so environmen-<lb />
tally friendly that it is eligible<lb />
for a clean-fuel tax deduction.<lb />
Honda also has an Accord Hybrid<lb />
series.<lb />
Another hot car is the<lb />
revamped Volkswagen Beetle<lb />
TD1. This car has a unique shape<lb />
and comes in a variety of colors.<lb />
The tiny flower that comes in<lb />
the dashboard is a distinctive<lb />
and charming accessory that sets<lb />
the Beetle apart from any other<lb />
vehicle.<lb />
The TDI Beetle was ranked<lb />
fourth in the "Top 10 Most Fuel-<lb />
Efficient Cars for 2005" accord-<lb />
ing to the EPA formula. Although<lb />
this car looks small from the<lb />
outside, once inside it's quite<lb />
spacious and it's always cool to<lb />
be able to zip through traffic and<lb />
easily parallel-park.<lb />
"I bought my Beetle because<lb />
It is great on gas and has a good<lb />
sell back value. It's compact,<lb />
cute and different. It defines me<lb />
in that way because it's not like<lb />

everything else achievable. Practice.<lb />
Cancer - If things aren't going quite as<lb />
expected, take a break. Atrip to the mall<lb />

Leo - If things don't go according to<lb />

of that, too.<lb />

one more time just to make sure. You<lb />
almost have it memorized by now.<lb />
Capricorn - Now's the time to ask for<lb />
money. The people who have it will<lb />
be feeling generous. Be respectful<lb />
and make even more.<lb />
Aquarius - You'll be able to tell when<lb />

Scions come in three hot<lb />
styles. The xA, xB and the tC. The<lb />
xA has a rounded box shape. The<lb />
xB has the clean-cut box shape<lb />
and the tC has a basic compact<lb />

is most interesting and mostly<lb />
seen around Greenville.<lb />
It has a futuristic look and<lb />
tons of things can be done to it to<lb />
make it unique and distinct from<lb />
other cars. This is definitely a car<lb />
to be seen. The xB Scion sticks<lb />
out from all the other standard<lb />
cars and turns heads with its<lb />
innovative design.<lb />
The Scion xA is ranked eighth<lb />
on the top ten most fuel efficient<lb />
cars for 2005 list. The Scion xB<lb />
grabbed the ninth spot on the<lb />
list. Not only are these cars styl-<lb />
ish, they are cheap on gas too.<lb />
What more could a broke college<lb />
student ask for? The Scion Web<lb />
site offers many accessories that<lb />
can be used to customize any<lb />
Scion. Some accessories include<lb />
clutches and a number of other<lb />
car gadgets.<lb />
Another extraordinarily<lb />
designed vehicle that is hot in<lb />
2005 is the Mini Cooper. This<lb />
eclectic car is showing up all over<lb />
the big screen and television. The<lb />
Mini Cooper is the epitome of<lb />
European taste. This car comes<lb />
as a 2-door coupe, convertible,<lb />
sports coupe or a 4-passenger<lb />
family coupe.<lb />
The Mini Cooper sells from<lb />
$17,000 - $25,000 depending on<lb />
which of the four models one<lb />
chooses to buy. Even though the<lb />
car's title implies that it is a min-<lb />
iature version of a standard car,<lb />
the Mini Cooper has tons of head<lb />
and foot room. With its cool oval<lb />
shaped headlights and tailored<lb />
design, the Mini Cooper will be<lb />
here to stay for years to come.<lb />
So the hottest cars of 2005<lb />
aren't just stylish and they aren't<lb />
just small, they are also fuel effi-<lb />
cient and more environmentally<lb />
friendly. Smaller cars are simply<lb />
fantastic, easy to manage and<lb />
their unique shapes just make<lb />
them that much hotter.<lb />

Gas prices are on the rise after<lb />
the disaster of Hurricane Katrina<lb />
sent the American economy into<lb />
turmoil. Despite urges from Presi-<lb />
dent Bush to conserve gas, people<lb />
are still heading to their local<lb />
dealership to buy gas guzzling<lb />
trucks and SUVs. The demand<lb />
is high for vehicles that offer<lb />
versatility as well as style.<lb />
Full size pickup trucks are an<lb />
American classic because they<lb />
bring storage capacity and off<lb />
road capabilities to the average<lb />
consumer. You see them every-<lb />
where, while driving in the city<lb />
or cruising through back roads,<lb />
they have become a staple vehicle<lb />
in our society.<lb />
The Chevy Silverado Is a<lb />
popular choice with half, three<lb />
quarter and one-ton capacities<lb />
available, as well as a number of<lb />
cab configurations - this truck<lb />
can fit the needs of any indi-<lb />
vidual. Its solid construction and<lb />
quietness are two features that<lb />
outweigh its low gas mileage.<lb />
The Nissan Titan is a more<lb />
luxurious full size pickup than<lb />
others because it not only offers<lb />
various capacities, but also fea-<lb />
tures two cab configurations<lb />
and three trim levels as well as<lb />
optional side-curtain air bags.<lb />
The wide opening rear doors are<lb />
great for families because they<lb />
open wide to allow for comfort-<lb />
able transitions both into and out<lb />
of the truck.<lb />
Refinement and ride comfort<lb />
are the Toyota Tundra's claims<lb />
to fame. There is a vast amount<lb />
of front seat space which allows<lb />
both the driver and passenger<lb />
room to be comfortable, not<lb />
cramped like in many other<lb />
trucks. Another pro for this<lb />
vehicle is the high resale value<lb />
that it possesses. This may not be<lb />
an initial priority for most buyers,<lb />
but it is something buyers should<lb />
consider.<lb />
Compact pickup trucks are<lb />
an affordable way to enjoy the<lb />
benefits of having a truck with-<lb />
out breaking the bank. These<lb />
trucks weigh no more than<lb />
5,500 pounds and offer the<lb />
same advantages that full size<lb />
pickups do. They have the ever<lb />
important storage capacity and<lb />
off road capabilities - the only<lb />
difference from a full size pickup<lb />
is the amount of these elements<lb />
is less prevalent.<lb />
The Ford Ranger has been an<lb />
American favorite for a number of<lb />
years now. They are now offered<lb />
with a variety of features to<lb />
choose from such as cab style and<lb />
engine choice. The four-cylinder<lb />
engine offers better fuel economy<lb />
than the V-6 for those trying to<lb />
conserve gas. Overall, the driv-<lb />
ing ease and maneuverability of<lb />
this truck make it a good choice<lb />
no matter what options you<lb />
choose.<lb />
For those who want a big,<lb />
tough truck and don't care how<lb />
much fuel they use, try a Ford F-<lb />
Series. The new F-150 has been a<lb />

rugged, yet comfortable options<lb />
that are available. The F-Series<lb />

How an ECU dropout<lb />
became America's<lb />
sweetheart<lb />
GARY MCCABE<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
In 1985, Sandra Bullock was<lb />
a 20-year-old aspiring actress<lb />
leaving ECU with a dream, her<lb />
dog and anything else that<lb />
would fit into her Honda Accord<lb />
as she migrated to New York City<lb />
to try her luck at acting. The<lb />
only thing she forgot, though,<lb />
was her degree - she was three<lb />
credits short of getting her BA<lb />
in drama.<lb />
Fast-forward to 2005 and<lb />
Bullock is an A-list actress with<lb />
millions of fans and even more<lb />
dollars. Just imagine what she<lb />
could have accomplished if she<lb />
had stuck around and gotten<lb />
that degree.<lb />
Bullock was born on July 26,<lb />
1964 to John and Helga Bullock.<lb />
Her father was an Alabama-born,<lb />
Julliard scholar working in the<lb />
upper-echelon of the US Army.<lb />
Her mother was a German opera<lb />
singer living in Nuremburg. The<lb />
two met and within three years,<lb />
were married. Eventually the<lb />
pair moved to Arlington, Va<lb />
where John worked as a contrac-<lb />
tor for the Pentagon. Before too<lb />
long they had their first child,<lb />
Sandra.<lb />
Bullock's formative years<lb />
were spent bouncing between<lb />
Germany and the United States.<lb />
Overseas, she would live in<lb />
Salzburg and Nuremburg with<lb />
her aunt and grandmother and<lb />
attend German schools. Bullock<lb />
began studying ballet and sing-<lb />
ing in choruses.<lb />
At age 10 she moved back<lb />
the United States for good but<lb />
after so many years in Europe,<lb />
was quite different from the<lb />
students in Arlington. Bullock<lb />
was teased and humiliated by<lb />
her classmates for the way she<lb />
acted, the way she dressed and<lb />
the way she looked.<lb />
However, the awkward<lb />
phase would be short lived and<lb />
by high school, Bullock had<lb />
developed into a lovely young<lb />
lady who excelled at cheer-<lb />
leading and drama. Her senior<lb />

Together Forever:<lb />

SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
In all aspects of the media,<lb />
celebrity couples seem to be hold-<lb />
ing the spotlight. Stars are no<lb />
longer known for their work, but<lb />
rather for the company they keep.<lb />
While some couples seem to be<lb />
breaking up as fast as they get<lb />
together, others are furthering<lb />
their commitments with surprise<lb />
engagements and, in some cases,<lb />
weddings.<lb />
No matter how perfect for '<lb />
one another some people seem to<lb />
be, more often than not there is<lb />
some sort of trouble in paradise.<lb />
Let's examine some star couples<lb />
who recently made headlines not<lb />
for being successful, but rather<lb />
for failing to stay together.<lb />
Well, it was no shock when it<lb />
was announced that Renee Zell-<lb />
weger and Kenny Chesney were<lb />
getting a divorce after only four<lb />
months of marriage. Considering .<lb />
the short amount of time that<lb />
they dated before eloping, they<lb />
were pretty much doomed before<lb />
they said even said "I do<lb />

Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher Melania Knauss and Donald Trump<lb />
their marriage has been attrib-<lb />
uted to several things, which<lb />
include Brad's reported affair<lb />
with co-star Angelina Jolie as<lb />
well as Jen's resistance to start<lb />
a family.<lb />
What about Jessica Simpson<lb />
and her hottie husband Nick<lb />
Lachey? Those two cannot seem<lb />
to stay out of the headlines and<lb />
each magazine article seems to<lb />
say something different. "The<lb />
ring is back on "They are defi-<lb />
nitely divorced or "Still in love<lb />
Who can keep up? Being in the<lb />
public eye must be hardj but what<lb />
leads to rumors like these?<lb />
These couples were on "heart-<lb />
break-avenue" with the disap-<lb />
pearance of the fundamental<lb />
ingredient, love. Not to say that<lb />
these couples were never in love,<lb />
but toward the end of their rela-<lb />
tionships you could tell the love<lb />
was fading. Relationships can<lb />
withstand almost anything if the<lb />
two people involved are willing<lb />
to work through it, but when love<lb />
is lost there is no hope.<lb />
While some celebrity couples<lb />
seem to be on the rocks, others<lb />
are thriving and growing to<lb />
new heights. Ashton Kutcher<lb />
and Demi Moore tied the knot<lb />
a few weeks ago after two years<lb />
of dating. There is a IS year<lb />
age difference between the two,<lb />
which makes some wonder how<lb />
strong their commitment to one<lb />
another is. Now that they are<lb />
married, I fear Kutcher will fold<lb />
under the pressure of having to<lb />
fill not only the role of husband,<lb />
but stepfather as well.<lb />
There has been buzz of Mat-<lb />
thew McConaughey planning to<lb />
propose to girlfriend, Penelope<lb />
Cruz since last February. Nothing<lb />
has come of this gossip - however,<lb />
McConaughey has recently been<lb />
promoting an upcoming film<lb />
and during several interviews<lb />
spoken of his love for her. There<lb />
is no doubt in my mind that<lb />
if these two decide to further<lb />
commit, they will have no prob-<lb />
lem surviving. By keeping their<lb />
relationship out of the media,<lb />
they are giving themselves a<lb />
chance to be together without<lb />
public scrutiny.<lb />
One couple that never seems<lb />
to leave the spotlight are newly-<lb />
weds Donald Trump and Mela-<lb />
nia Knauss. After marrying in<lb />
January of this year, the two have<lb />
been in magazines and on enter-<lb />
tainment shows almost every-<lb />
day. Now the two are making<lb />
waves with the announcement<lb />
of Melania's pregnancy. Why are<lb />
the two in such a hurry to start a<lb />
family? I'm sure Melania is going<lb />
to make sure she has a Trump heir<lb />
just in case the marriage ends in<lb />
divorce, which is highly likely<lb />
considering their 24 year age<lb />
difference. In this case, I believe<lb />
the term "gold digger" is the best<lb />
description of Melania.<lb />
While some celebrities are<lb />
destined to split, there are other<lb />
couples who I have no doubt will<lb />
be together forever. Take Tom<lb />
Hanks and Rita Wilson, this pair<lb />

a degree in drama.<lb />
While attending ECU, Bullock<lb />
supported herself by competing<lb />
in dance competitions but after<lb />
a breakthrough performance<lb />
in a production of Three Sisters,<lb />
decided that the time was right<lb />
to move forward with her career<lb />
- despite being so close to getting<lb />
her degree.<lb />
She moved to New York<lb />
and was accepted to the world-<lb />
renowned Neighborhood Play-<lb />
house School of the Theatre, a<lb />
school whose graduates include<lb />
Steve McQueen, James Caan,<lb />
Diane Keaton and Gregory Peck.<lb />
Studying under Sanford Meisner,<lb />
she began doing auditions and<lb />
slowly made a name for herself.<lb />
Soon movie and television<lb />
roles started coming her way. In<lb />
1989, she had a role in The Preppie<lb />
Murder and in 1990 she played<lb />
the Melanie Griffith role in the<lb />
TV adaptation of Working Girl.<lb />
The show didn't last, but Bullock<lb />
persevered.<lb />
Later in 1990, while filming<lb />
Love Potion 9, she fell for co-star<lb />
Tate Donovan. After the- film<lb />
wrapped, Bullocked moved to<lb />
Los Angeles to live with Tate. Love<lb />
Potion 9 bombed when it was<lb />
released two years later.<lb />
Things began slowly for Bull-<lb />
ock in Los Angeles, but In 1993,<lb />
she won a small role in The<lb />
Vanishing. After a short time,<lb />
a Warner Brothers executive<lb />
recommended her for a role In<lb />
Demolition Man co-starring Syl-<lb />
vester Stallone and Wesley Snipes.<lb />
Demolition Man was an important<lb />
film for Bullock because it was<lb />
a mainstream film which she<lb />
could display her talent but most<lb />
importantly for what it would<lb />
lead to.<lb />
Demolition Man producer Joel<lb />
Silver was so Impressed with Bull-<lb />
ock that he recommended her to<lb />
director Jan De Bont. At the time,<lb />
De Bont was working a film about<lb />
a deranged criminal who planted<lb />
a bomb on a bus and should the<lb />
bus drop below SO mph, it would<lb />
detonate. The film was Speed.<lb />
De Bont offered Bullock the<lb />
role of Annie Porter, the feisty<lb />
passenger-turned-bus driver<lb />
with a suspended driver's license.<lb />
Initially producers were livid<lb />
that De Bont cast a virtually<lb />
unknown in the role of Annie<lb />
instead of a famous, busty blonde,<lb />
which they wanted.<lb />
However, the ends justified<lb />
the means. Speed grossed well<lb />
more than $100 million domes-<lb />
tically and became one of the<lb />
biggest hits of 1994. As a result,<lb />
Bullock became one of the big-<lb />
gest actresses in Hollywood and<lb />
quickly became a bankable lead<lb />
actress.<lb />
Since Speed, Bullock has<lb />
headlined string of successful<lb />
films including Miss Congenial-<lb />
ity, While You Were Sleeping and A<lb />
Time to Kill, and has even segued<lb />
that into a successful producing<lb />
career.<lb />
Bullock, however, has never<lb />
let her success go to her head<lb />
and is said to be one of the most<lb />
genuine, warm and down-to-<lb />
Earth celebrities in America. Julia<lb />
Roberts and Meg Ryan can pre-<lb />
tend to be America's sweetheart<lb />
on screen but reportedly, they're<lb />

SUVs seem to be everywhere<lb />

The Jeep Liberty offers the<lb />

handling capabilities. There are a<lb />

For those concerned with<lb />
safety, the Saturn Vue earned one<lb />

in the industry. The handling<lb />

A healthy alternative to<lb />
downtown<lb />
EMILY JORDAN<lb />

The Pita Pit opened its doors<lb />
to Greenville on Aug. 22, 2005.<lb />
Located at 214 East Fifth St it<lb />
is in the heart of the downtown<lb />
area. Offering a variety of fresh<lb />
and fast healthy choices. The<lb />
Pita Pit adds a new spin to most<lb />
of the greasy spoons that you'll<lb />
find downtown.<lb />
From the street, the restau-<lb />
rant looks like a typical fast<lb />
food joint, minus the drive-thru.<lb />
There are Pita Pit trademark char-<lb />
acters painted on the windows<lb />
that tell you you're about to enter<lb />
fun-land instead of a restaurant.<lb />
The walls inside are colorfully<lb />
painted with similar cartoonish<lb />
Pita Pit characters - there's even<lb />
a pita driving a car.<lb />
Aside from the youthful<lb />
decor, the signage is a little less<lb />
than impressive as well. It seems<lb />
that the Pita Pit coordinators are<lb />
all about simplicity. The menu<lb />
is plain and with little choice.<lb />
The to-go menu pamphlet looks<lb />
as though someone designed it<lb />
using a basic publishing program<lb />
on their home computer, which<lb />
does not profit the restaurant's<lb />
professional appeal.<lb />
The choices the menu offers<lb />
are limited to salads, pitas and<lb />
smoothies. Essentially, you can<lb />
put together any kind of pita<lb />
you like from the meat, veggies,<lb />
cheese and sauce lists. For meat<lb />
lovers, there are several choices<lb />
of non-veggie pitas, like grilled<lb />
chicken, Philly steak, gyros, tuna,<lb />
seafood, turkey and ham. The<lb />
Pita Pit has a fair selection of<lb />
fresh vegetables and vegetable<lb />
spreads, which range from Baba-<lb />
goush, an eggplant spread, to<lb />
hummus, a chick pea spread. The<lb />
smoothie selection is rather bleak,<lb />
as only four different flavors are<lb />
offered on the menu.<lb />
Nutrition is a large contribut-<lb />
ing factor to The Pita Pit promise -<lb />
"Fresh Thinking, Healthy Eating<lb />
PitaPit.com offers a nutrition<lb />
scale. Click your choices from<lb />
the menu and the scale will<lb />
give you a total for calories, fat,<lb />
protein, fiber, carbohydrates,<lb />
sodium and cholesterol. The pita<lb />
alone has only 260 calories and<lb />
0.4 grams of fat. Of course, the<lb />
veggie pitas are generally going<lb />
to have the least amount of fat.<lb />
For example, a veggie pita with<lb />
lettuce, tomato, green peppers,<lb />
alfalfa sprouts, mushrooms, black<lb />
olives and Babagoush spread has<lb />
only four grams of fat. However,<lb />
meat lovers can have an enjoy-<lb />
able pita for less than 10 grams of<lb />
fat. And a seafood pita with just<lb />
lettuce and tomato has only two<lb />
grams of fat - that's impressive.<lb />
It all depends on what you put<lb />
on your pita.<lb />
A pita alone will fill you up,<lb />
and it's not going to cost you an<lb />
arm and a leg either. Pita prices<lb />
range from $4.95 - $5.75 plus<lb />
any extras, like bacon, cheese<lb />
and meat. For a pita and a drink,<lb />
it will run around seven bucks.<lb />
The Pita Pit is a little more expen-<lb />
sive than a fast food restaurant<lb />
like McDonald's, but your health<lb />
is worth the extra cost.<lb />

the end of a 24-22 victory over San<lb />

against Jacksonville. The injury Isn't<lb />
as severe as It initially appeared to<lb />

coach Bill Cowher said "It looked<lb />

NFL regular-season starter, was<lb />
Injured with 1:05 remaining when<lb />
Chargers defensive end Luis Castillo's<lb />

as Roethlisberger was completing<lb />
a 9-yard pass to Antwaan Randle<lb />
El. Roethlisberger lay In pain on the<lb />
turf for several minutes, clutching at<lb />
his knee, before limping off the field.<lb />
He was removed from the field on a<lb />
cart, his knee heavily wrapped, after<lb />
Jeff Reed kicked a 40-yard field goal<lb />
with six seconds remaining, but he<lb />
had no bandage on the knee when<lb />
he got dressed shortly after that.<lb />
Roethlisberger had an MRI test shortly<lb />
after the team returned to Pittsburgh<lb />
on Tuesday morning. Roethlisberger<lb />
was the NFLs offensive rookie of the<lb />
year last season after going 130<lb />
on a team that went a franchise-<lb />
record 15-1 before ultimately losing<lb />
to New England 41-27 in the AFC<lb />
Championship Game. He was off<lb />
to an excellent start this season,<lb />
completing 52 of 86 passes for 913<lb />
yards, seven touchdowns and no<lb />
interceptions. His quarterback rating<lb />
of 123.8 Is the best in the league.<lb />
Backup Tommy Maddox sat out the<lb />
San Diego game with a calf injury,<lb />
but also could be available Sunday.<lb />
Cowher said his Injury also wasn't<lb />
as bad as initially thought. If neither<lb />
Roethllsberger nor Maddox can play,<lb />
the Steelers would turn to 30-year-old<lb />
Charlie Batch, the Lions' starter from<lb />
1998 until late in the 2001 season<lb />
who has played little since signing<lb />
with his hometown Steelers before<lb />

Patterson expected to miss<lb />

Wake Forest cornerback Kevin<lb />
Patterson Is expected to miss<lb />
Saturday's game at No. 14 Boston<lb />
College after undergoing surgery<lb />
Tuesday to treat abdominal pain, the<lb />
school said. Patterson was admitted<lb />
to a hospital Monday night and may<lb />
have his appendix removed, coach<lb />
Jim Grobe said. Football trainer Don<lb />
Steelman later said doctors had taken<lb />
Patterson in for surgery Tuesday, but<lb />
it was unclear what procedure would<lb />
be performed. Steelman was also<lb />
unsure how long Patterson would be<lb />
out. Patterson had a similar episode<lb />
this summer, when hospital doctors<lb />
believed he had appendicitis. He was<lb />
released without further treatment<lb />
after the pain subsided. Patterson<lb />
has started all six games for the<lb />
Demon Deacons (2-4, 1-2 Atlantic<lb />
Coast Conference). Riley Swanson,<lb />
who played In all 23 games the past<lb />
two seasons, will probably replace<lb />
Patterson. Swanson has a forced<lb />
fumble and a pass breakup this<lb />
season after being suspended for the<lb />
opener for breaking a team rule.<lb />
Pirates move quickly to grab<lb />
former Dodgers manager Tracy<lb />
Former Los Angeles Dodgers<lb />
manager Jim Tracy was hired<lb />
Tuesday as the Pittsburgh Pirates'<lb />
manager, the Associated Press<lb />
learned from a source close to the<lb />
team who requested anonymity.<lb />
Tracy, 49, was the front-runner from<lb />
the start of the Pirates' search last<lb />
week because of his long-standing<lb />
ties to Pirates general manager Dave<lb />
Littlefield, with whom he worked in<lb />
the Montreal Expos' organization In<lb />
the 1990s. Tracy beat out the only<lb />
two known candidates for the job,<lb />
former Oakland Athletics manager<lb />
Ken Macha and Atlanta Braves coach<lb />
Fredi Gonzalez. Tracy replaces Lloyd<lb />
McClendon, who was fired on Sept.<lb />
6 during his fifth consecutive losing<lb />
season and was replaced for the rest<lb />
of the season by bench coach Pete<lb />
Mackanln, who was not considered<lb />
for the job on a permanent basis.<lb />
Tracy managed the Dodgers from<lb />
2001 until the Injury-riddled team<lb />
finished 71-91 this season. The<lb />
record was their second-worst since<lb />
they moved from Brooklyn In 1958.<lb />
He finished with a 427-383 record,<lb />
guided Los Angeles last year to its<lb />
first division championship since<lb />
1995, and had only one losing season<lb />
in five, but resigned last week after<lb />
a falling out with general manager<lb />
Paul DePodesta. With the Pirates,<lb />
Tracy takes over a team coming<lb />
off 13 consecutive losing seasons,<lb />
three short of the major league<lb />
record, and a 67-95 record but one<lb />
that broke In a half-dozen promising<lb />
rookies during the second half of this<lb />

current associate athletic direc-<lb />

had a base salary of $100,000<lb />
annually through June 30, 2008.<lb />
Mazey's contract called for him<lb />
to receive a $5,000 bonus if ECU<lb />
advanced to a NCAA Regional or<lb />
won the Conference USA's regu-<lb />

According to Mazey's signed<lb />

contract for cause, Mazey would<lb />
be given 30 days notice and only<lb />
be entitled to the amount of his<lb />
salary upon his effective date of<lb />
termination.<lb />
ECU officials declined to<lb />

ECU is currently paying<lb />

paid $100,000 through Dec.<lb />
2007. Former basketball coach<lb />
Bill Herrion is due $100,000<lb />

No settlement between Mazey<lb />
and the athletic program has<lb />
been made public. Depending on<lb />
the reason Mazey was suspended,<lb />
the termination clause may forgo<lb />

THE EAST CAROUNIAN SPORTS<lb />
PAGE A9<lb />
South Bend gears up for a big weekend<lb />
Weis and the Fighting Irish will give USC one of their very few top ten match-ups since 1990.<lb />
(AP) Tickets are being<lb />
hawked for more than $2,500,<lb />
some hotels are charging $1,000<lb />
for the weekend, requests for<lb />
media credentials have come<lb />
from overseas and ESPN is send-<lb />
ing its "College GameDay" crew<lb />
in a day early.<lb />
Oh, and a Friday night pep<lb />
rally could draw as many as<lb />
50,000 fans.<lb />
Other than that, it will be<lb />
a normal football weekend at<lb />
Notre Dame, where anticipation<lb />
for Saturday's game against No.<lb />
1 Southern California is already<lb />
somewhere between through the<lb />
roof and off the charts.<lb />
"I said to somebody. 'We<lb />
have to pace ourselves. We can't<lb />
get worn out early in the week,1"<lb />
said Greg Ayers, executive direc-<lb />
tor of the South BendMishawaka<lb />
Convention and Visitors Bureau.<lb />
"The eyes of college foot-<lb />
ball will be on South Bend this<lb />
weekend and it will be a terrific<lb />
atmosphere<lb />
An atmosphere that will<lb />
gain intensity as the 2:30 p.m.<lb />
kickoff approaches. At stake is<lb />
USC's 27-game winning streak,<lb />
which includes three victories<lb />
over Notre Dame.<lb />
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS<lb />
Notre Dame normally holds<lb />
its Friday night pep rally at the<lb />
Joyce Center, which seats about<lb />
11,500. It's also where a team<lb />
from California saw its monu-<lb />
mental winning streak come to<lb />
an end. That was UCLA basket-<lb />
ball, the year was 1974 and the<lb />
streak was 88 games.<lb />
Friday's pep rally will take<lb />
place at Notre Dame Stadium,<lb />
weather permitting.<lb />
After hearing that some<lb />
5,000 fans were turned away<lb />
from Notre Dame's pep rally<lb />
before the Sept. 17 Michigan<lb />
State game, coach Charlie<lb />
Weis suggested they take the<lb />
show outside.<lb />
"We felt the best thing for<lb />
the fans was to give them an<lb />
opportunity to be a part of the<lb />
experience he said.<lb />
This would mark the fourth<lb />
pep rally held at the stadium and<lb />
the first since 2000, on the eve<lb />
of the Nebraska game.<lb />
"I know one thing Weis<lb />
said. "I am not going to emcee<lb />
this one because I am 0-1 when<lb />
I have emceed. I have a plan<lb />
for this one, as you would expect<lb />
I would<lb />
WHO'S SELLING TWO?<lb />
USC sports information<lb />
director Tim Tessalone has<lb />
no access to tickets for road<lb />
games. And that's probably the<lb />
good news. It means he doesn't<lb />
have to sort through the numer-<lb />
ous requests.<lb />
"The Notre Dame game is a<lb />
tough ticket every year he said.<lb />
"This is a pilgrimage game<lb />
Major university donors get<lb />
first crack at USC's ticket allot-<lb />
ment of 7,000. If tickets get<lb />
returned, Notre Dame would<lb />
sell them.<lb />
"But that's pretty unlikely<lb />
said Josh Berlo, Notre Dame's top<lb />
ticket officer.<lb />
Scalping tickets in Indiana is<lb />
legal as long as the transaction<lb />
takes place off campus grounds,<lb />
according to Ayers.<lb />
On StubHub.com, $450 will<lb />
get you an upper level end-<lb />
zone seat and $2,775 will land<lb />
you a prime seat in Section 9.<lb />
(The range for tickets to Tues-<lb />
day's White Sox game is $210<lb />
to $2,332.)<lb />
But Berlo said his office has<lb />
revoked "thousands of tick-<lb />
ets from hundreds of people"<lb />
who have resold their tickets for<lb />
a profit.<lb />
"Be careful who you give<lb />
them to he warned.<lb />
MEDIA DARLINGS<lb />
The last time Notre Dame<lb />
hosted a game of this magnitude,<lb />
NBC Sports spent $60,000 to<lb />
bring in temporary lighting and<lb />
ESPN, for the first time, sent its<lb />
"College GameDay" crew on loca-<lb />
tion to South Bend.<lb />
That was Nov. 13, 1993,<lb />
and the event was the "Game<lb />
of the Century pitting No. 1<lb />
Florida State against the second-<lb />
ranked Irish.<lb />
Permanent lights were<lb />
installed in 1996, but NBC will<lb />
beef up its coverage this time by<lb />
adding to its normal array of 12<lb />

receivers and defensive backs.<lb />
ESPN, meanwhile, will dis-<lb />
patch "GameDay" commentators<lb />
Chris Fowler and Lee Corso to<lb />
South Bend on Thursday for a<lb />
"SportsCenter" segment. ESPN2's<lb />
"Cold Pizza" will originate from<lb />
an area between the stadium and<lb />
the Hesburgh Library on Friday.<lb />
"It's always our goal to be<lb />
right in the center of the activ-<lb />
ity ESPN spokesman Josh Krule-<lb />
witz said. "Getting there Thurs-<lb />
day gives us a chance to rev it up<lb />
a little early<lb />
As for media requests, Notre<lb />
Dame has received one from a<lb />
British publication.<lb />
That might seem fishy con-<lb />
sidering the sport will be the<lb />
American version of football,<lb />
but senior associate athletic<lb />
director John Heisler was not<lb />
taken aback.<lb />
"When you play a Big<lb />
Ten team, there's a Japanese<lb />
publication that routinely<lb />
makes a request Heisler said.<lb />
"I've checked out their Web site.<lb />
I can't read it, but they're defi-<lb />
nitely covering these games<lb />
Heisler expects all 330 seats<lb />
in the main press box to be<lb />
claimed. Additional work sta-<lb />
tions might be created by bring-<lb />
ing in bar stools.<lb />
"These are nice problems to<lb />
have; that's how we look at it<lb />
Heisler said.<lb />
THEY'LL LEAVE THE LIGHTS<lb />
ON FOR YOU<lb />
St. Joseph County has<lb />
added 1,500 hotel rooms since<lb />
Notre Dame Stadium expanded<lb />
before the 1997 season,<lb />
bringing the total to 4,000.<lb />
But, of course, this isn't nearly<lb />
enough to accommodate every-<lb />
one.<lb />
Ayers said the rooms sold<lb />
out about a month ago. And<lb />
every one requires a two-night<lb />
stay, including the South Bend<lb />
Marriott, which is fetching $499<lb />
per night.<lb />
"It's similar to a Super Bowl or<lb />
an Olympics, where the rates go<lb />
much higher Ayers said.<lb />
According to a 2002 study<lb />
conducted by Notre Dame,<lb />
an average football weekend<lb />
generates $6.3 million for<lb />
South Bend-area businesses.<lb />
USu from page A7<lb />
yet. Media prognosticators have<lb />
pretty much given it to them,<lb />
but as ESPN's College Game-<lb />
day Lee Corso says, "Not so<lb />
fast my friend I will tell you<lb />
why. For starters, USC's defense<lb />
has looked very shaky against<lb />
subpar Pac-10 teams. Against<lb />
Arizona State last week, the<lb />
Trojan defense gave up 415 total<lb />
yards. Granted, ASU has a good<lb />
offense, but USC is the defend-<lb />
ing national champ and is a lock<lb />
to be at the Rose Bowl again<lb />
this year. Saturday the Trojan<lb />
defense gave up only 245 total<lb />
yards, but the game was back<lb />
and forth in the fourth quar-<lb />
ter until Leinart remembered<lb />
who he was and who he was<lb />
playing. The defense is not the<lb />
only reason why we shouldn't<lb />
be handing them the crystal<lb />
football just yet. There are a<lb />
few teams in my opinion that<lb />
can beat them either during<lb />
the regular season or in the<lb />
championship game (that is if<lb />
USC gets there).<lb />
USC takes on the Fightin'<lb />
Irish of Notre Dame this upcom-<lb />
ing Saturday, in what could<lb />
possibly be the Trojans first<lb />
loss of the season. Notre Dame<lb />
under former Patriots offensive<lb />
coordinator Charlie Weiss, is<lb />
one of the top offenses in the<lb />
country. Yeah, their defense is<lb />
not all that, but the Irish will<lb />
put up some big numbers and<lb />
points against USC Saturday.<lb />
Plus they have had two weeks<lb />
to prepare for the Trojans and<lb />
the game is at Notre Dame.<lb />
Texas is another team that<lb />
can beat the Trojans. The two<lb />
do not play in the regular<lb />
season, but if USC runs the<lb />
table, as does Texas, you can bet<lb />
they will meet in the national<lb />
championship game. Texas<lb />
finally beat Oklahoma in the Red<lb />
River Shootout this past Satur-<lb />
day, and their schedule sets them<lb />
up for an undefeated season. The<lb />
Longhorn's QB Vince Young,<lb />
who is a Heisman Trophy can-<lb />
didate, could possibly run and<lb />
pass all over the USC defense.<lb />
Texas' running game is also<lb />
stout, led by Freshman Jamaal<lb />
Charles and Vince Young. If<lb />
the Longhorn's defense can<lb />
stop the Trojans offense, a<lb />
Texas national champi-<lb />
onship is quite possible.<lb />
The Virginia Tech Hokies,<lb />
currently third in the country,<lb />
could also pull the upset. But<lb />
Head Coach Frank Beamer has<lb />
had a habit recently of losing the<lb />
big game, a-la Miami. That big<lb />
game should be at the end of the<lb />
season against Florida State in the<lb />
ACC championship game. The<lb />
Hokies still may not get to the<lb />
BCS championship game though.<lb />
Their schedule includes a tough<lb />
Boston College team and Miami.<lb />
If they do run the table, they still<lb />
more than likely will have to<lb />
play Florida State for the confer-<lb />
ence championship. The Hokies<lb />
perennialy play excellent special<lb />
teams, aka Beamer Ball. Their<lb />
defense is one of the most domi-<lb />
nant in the country this year with<lb />
two shutouts in six games so far.<lb />
Oh yeah, they also have some guy<lb />
named Michael Vick's brother<lb />
Marcus at QB. The Hokies offense<lb />
is also rolling, scoring 236 points<lb />
against 54 points given up. Look<lb />
out for the Hokies.<lb />
Finally, the Florida State<lb />
Seminoles also have a sporting<lb />
chance at making it the National<lb />
Championship game. The Semi-<lb />
noles schedule sets up favorably<lb />
for an appearance in the ACC<lb />
championship game and with a<lb />
win there, you have to put them<lb />
in the mix to play in the Rose<lb />
Bowl. With stout defense and a<lb />
surprisingly good offense led by<lb />
a freshman QB and WR's, the<lb />
'Noles definitely have a chance<lb />
of beating the USC Trojans. By<lb />
the way, FSU has a coach named<lb />
Bobby Bowden, maybe you've<lb />
heard of him - he already has<lb />
two national championships<lb />
under his belt so he knows how<lb />
to win the big game.<lb />
Be that as it may, once again<lb />
we will probably have another<lb />
BCS mess with rankings, com-<lb />
puters, human error, etc. After<lb />
what, eight years, the BCS still<lb />
does not work and still does<lb />
not satisfy every team. There<lb />
is another chance that there<lb />
could be four or five undefeated<lb />
teams this year, which could<lb />
make things pretty darn inter-<lb />
esting for those BCS morons.<lb />
Regardless, USC, look out. You<lb />
haven't won anything yet. Last<lb />
year was last year.<lb />
