Security breach at ECU<lb />

Personal information about 250 students was exported via the internet.<lb />

ELIZABETH YORK<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
A computer security breach has<lb />
recently created a disruption for<lb />
some ECU students and faculty.<lb />
A document containing the per-<lb />
sonal information of 250 students<lb />
and applicants in the department<lb />
of physician assistant studies was<lb />
exported from an Internet server.<lb />
Computer specialists discovered the<lb />
security breach in May while repair-<lb />
ing the server after complaints of<lb />
slow computer speed.<lb />
The individuals whose informa-<lb />
tion was taken were notified by a<lb />
letter. Those affected also received<lb />
an information packet containing<lb />
recommendations on preventative<lb />
actions from the Federal Trade<lb />
Commission.<lb />
"We are forming a high-level<lb />
task force to review how data is<lb />
handled campus-wide said Jack<lb />
McCoy, director of the ECU Infor-<lb />
mation Security Office.<lb />
The FTC provides information<lb />
on identity theft and also a course<lb />
of action to limit the amount of<lb />
damage a theft can inflict. In some<lb />
states, there are laws that allow a<lb />
victim of identity theft to enact a<lb />
credit freeze.<lb />
Tyrell demons, a senior visit-<lb />
ing student from UNC-Chapel<lb />
Hill majoring in psychology and<lb />
pre-law, says he knows "identity<lb />
theft exists, but it's not something<lb />
I worry about on a day to day basis<lb />
He added that the threat of identity<lb />
theft does not prevent him from<lb />
completing transactions, on the<lb />
Internet or otherwise.<lb />
Computer security is a major<lb />
concern on campus.<lb />
Matt Duncan, a junior com-<lb />
munication major, said he has<lb />
had three computers broken into.<lb />
Viruses entered his computer via<lb />
e-mail, and caused major damage,<lb />
"I want to see if they can<lb />
increase the penalty on hackers<lb />
said Duncan.<lb />
"Have zero tolerance for them<lb />
- throw them in jail<lb />
Batrice Adcock, a master's student<lb />
in nursing, said she often depends on<lb />
campus computers in the event that<lb />
her home computer is down.<lb />

Faculty and student<lb />

diving at sunken ship<lb />
SHANNON KEITH<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
December 9, 1864, the USS<lb />
Otsego, a Union warship traveling<lb />
up the Roanoke River, sailed into a<lb />
nest of Confederate mines.<lb />
The 220-foot vessel, as well as<lb />
Bazely, the 70-foot tugboat<lb />
sent to retrieve the Otsego, fell<lb />
victim to the enemy mines and<lb />
ended up mired on the bottom<lb />
of the Roanoke. Although historic<lb />
and military accounts of the ship<lb />
and its fate did exist, the exact loca<lb />
tion of the wreckage was unknown.<lb />
The Otsego, lacking the fame of its<lb />
iron-clad contemporaries, such as the<lb />
USS Monitor and CSS Albemade, became<lb />
a little-remembered footnote in the<lb />
maritime history of the U.S. Civil War.<lb />
The ship's legacy may have even<lb />
been forgotten aJhogether; if not for the<lb />
efforts of a team of researchers from ECU.<lb />
In a month-long research project,<lb />
ending late last month, a dozen stu-<lb />
dents and faculty members from ECU's<lb />
Program in Maritime Studies searched<lb />
a six-mile stretch of river near James-<lb />
ville, N.C. and mapped it for study.<lb />
Students dived on the wreckage<lb />
and identified ship sections of the<lb />
Otsego and Bazely, despite the murky<lb />
waters that often limited visibility to<lb />
less than three feet.<lb />
Research such as this is nothing<lb />
new to the program, which over the<lb />
years has located and researched<lb />
numerous sites in the shipwreck-rich<lb />
waters of coastal North Carolina.<lb />
The Maritime Studies program,<lb />
a part of ECU's history department,<lb />
has developed a distinguished repu-<lb />
tation for teaching and research in<lb />
the field of nautical archeology.<lb />
The program, established in 1981,<lb />
has developed joint-research projects<lb />
with numerous organizations such as<lb />
the N.C. Maritime Museum, Office<lb />
of Naval Research, the Bermuda<lb />
Maritime Museum and the U.S. Coast<lb />
Guard, to locate, identify, research<lb />
and salvage lost and sunken ships.<lb />
In the RV Perkins, the programs<lb />
65-foot research vessel, students and<lb />
faculty have participated in such<lb />
expeditions as the search for the USS<lb />
Alligator, the navy's first submarine<lb />
that was lost off the coast of NC in<lb />
1863, the USS Monitor, the famed<lb />
iron-clad of the U.S. Civil War and<lb />
the wreckage thought to be the<lb />
Queen Anne's Revenge, the flagship<lb />
of the infamous pirate Blackbeard.<lb />
The various findings of their<lb />
research are featured in Stem to Stern,<lb />
an annual publication put out by<lb />
Maritime Studies to catalog the vari-<lb />
ous expeditions undertaken by the fac-<lb />
ulty and students within the program.<lb />
As for the fate of the Otsego, it<lb />
must remain on the bottom of the<lb />
Roanoke for the time being.<lb />
Larry E. Babits, director of the pro-<lb />
gram, said parts of the ship were not<lb />
retrieved because the school's permit<lb />
with the Navy only allowed for the<lb />
survey work, as well as complications<lb />
in preserving the wooden and iron<lb />
artifacts from deterioration.<lb />
However, Babits said this does<lb />
not take away from the excitement of<lb />
such a one of a kind find such as this.<lb />
"All other Otsego-style ships<lb />
have been lost Babits said.<lb />
"We can look at it as a sole sur-<lb />
vivor of its class<lb />

20 arrests from fights after<lb />
Charlotte fireworks show<lb />
CHARLOTTE, NC - About 20 people<lb />
were arrested after fights broke out<lb />
Monday night in Charlotte following a<lb />
fireworks show.<lb />
Police brought in officers from across<lb />
Mecklenburg County to shut down<lb />
city streets and bring the situation<lb />
under control.<lb />
The 20 people were arrested on<lb />
charges such as fighting, disorderly<lb />
conduct and resisting arrest police<lb />
spokesman Keith Bridges said<lb />
Tuesday. He was not aware of any<lb />
injuries.<lb />
"We donl know for sure what started<lb />
the original fight but following that,<lb />
there were more fights, said Bridges.<lb />
"Some of the youths were stopping<lb />
cars and jumping on them<lb />
Police were on the scene for several<lb />
hours after the fireworks show ended<lb />
about 10:20 p.m. getting people out of<lb />
the area, Bridges said.<lb />
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Capt.<lb />
Tim Jayne hesitated to call the situation<lb />
a riot but officers on the street used<lb />
that term as they radioed to each<lb />
other. At its height Jayne estimated the<lb />
crowds numbered about 2,000.<lb />
People threw fireworks into the crowds,<lb />
blocked traffic and refused to respond<lb />
to police, said Jayne. The crowds<lb />
pushed a Dumpster into the street, he<lb />
said, and intimidated people trying to<lb />
leave parking garages.<lb />

United Church of Christ rule-<lb />
making body passes resolution In<lb />
favor of gay marriage<lb />
ATLANTA - The president of the<lb />
United Church of Christ said his<lb />
denomination "acted courageously<lb />
to declare freedom" when it passed<lb />
a resolution endorsing same-sex<lb />
marriage on Independence Day.<lb />
The resolution calls on member<lb />
churches of the liberal denomination's<lb />
1.3 million members to consider<lb />
wedding policies "that do not<lb />
discriminate against couples based<lb />
on gender It also asks churches<lb />
to consider supporting legislation<lb />
granting equal marriage rights to<lb />
gay and lesbian couples and to work<lb />
against laws banning gay marriage.<lb />
The endorsement by the church's<lb />
rule-making body Monday makes it<lb />
the largest Christian denomination to<lb />
endorse same-sex marriage. The vote<lb />
is not binding on individual churches,<lb />
but could cause some congregations<lb />
to leave the fold.<lb />
"On this July Fourth the General<lb />
Synod of the United Church of<lb />
Christ has acted courageously to<lb />
declare freedom, affirming marriage<lb />
equality, affirming the civil rights of<lb />
same gender couples to have their<lb />

by the state, and encouraging our<lb />
local churches to celebrate and bless<lb />

Church of Christ.<lb />
Roughly 80 percent of the<lb />
representatives on the church's 884-<lb />
member General Synod voted to<lb />
approve the resolution Monday, a day<lb />
after a committee recommended it.<lb />
A small group of conservative<lb />
congregations had proposed an<lb />
alternative resolution defining marriage<lb />
as between a man and a woman,<lb />
and suggested that supporting gay<lb />
marriage could lead to the church's<lb />
collapse.<lb />

Russia says American journalist's<lb />
murder solved, but doubts linger<lb />
MOSCOW - For nearly a year after<lb />
American journalist Paul Klebnikov<lb />
was gunned down on a Moscow<lb />
street, his killing was like dozens of<lb />
other high-profile Russian murder<lb />
cases - plenty of speculation but no<lb />
resolution. Then something unusual<lb />
happened: The government said it<lb />
was solved.<lb />
However, strong doubts remain about<lb />
an investigation that has become<lb />
a crucial test of President Vladimir<lb />
Putin's Russia and its justice system<lb />
- whether it can dig deeper than<lb />

political expediency and unearth the<lb />
truth.<lb />
The prosecutors named Khozh-<lb />
Akhmed Nukhayev, a former Chechen<lb />
separatist figure, saying he had killed<lb />
the editor of Forbes magazine's<lb />
Russian edition as vengeance for<lb />
a critical book the American wrote<lb />
about him.<lb />
But as the first anniversary of<lb />
Klebnikov's killing approaches, other<lb />
possible motives are still circulating.<lb />
"Without any information about the<lb />
evidence, we're all left speculating<lb />
about the credibility of this claim<lb />
that the prosecutor has made said<lb />
Alex Lupis of the New York-based<lb />
Committee to Protect Journalists.<lb />
June 16, when it announced the<lb />
results of the investigation, the chief<lb />
prosecutor's office revealed nothing<lb />
about the basis for its conclusion and<lb />
declined requests forfurther comment.<lb />
Washington's offers of help in the<lb />
probe have likewise gone unanswered<lb />
or been rebuffed.<lb />
Klebnikov, a 41 -year-old New Yorker of<lb />
Russian decent, was shot as he left his<lb />
office at around 10 p.m. July 9,2004.<lb />
The killing cut short the career of a man<lb />
who had chronicled the violent chaos<lb />
of Russian capitalism after the Soviet<lb />
collapse but who had high hopes for<lb />
the country his ancestors came from,<lb />
and a measure of confidence that<lb />
things were improving under Putin.<lb />
NC State must pay<lb />
$300,000 for harrassment<lb />
RALEIGH, NC (AP) Two<lb />
research assistants who sued NC<lb />
State University over sexual harass-<lb />
ment by a civil engineering profes-<lb />
sor will be paid $300,000, a state<lb />
judicial panel has ruled.<lb />
Evalyn Gonzales and Kathy<lb />
A. Wood had worked for Shuaib<lb />
Ahmad, a civil engineering pro-<lb />
fessor who has left the university.<lb />
When Gonzales and Wood made<lb />
their accusations in 1997, the uni-<lb />
versity allowed Ahmad to resign<lb />
and gave him a positive recom-<lb />
mendation letter.<lb />
The university also promoted<lb />
Ahmad to full professor after the<lb />
allegations were made and paid<lb />
him the rest of his $80,710 salary,<lb />
according to the order issued<lb />
last week by the state Industrial<lb />
Commission.<lb />
According to the order, Ahmad<lb />
engaged in palm reading, neck rubs<lb />
and hugs, put his hands under<lb />
one woman's shorts and tried to<lb />
unbutton another's blouse.<lb />
Ahmad asked one woman to<lb />
go to the beach with him for a<lb />
weekend and once offered her an<lb />
aphrodisiac nut.<lb />
NC State refused comment on<lb />
the order because it is appealing it,<lb />
but university spokeswoman Debo-<lb />
rah Griffin said NC State doesn't<lb />
tolerate sexual harassment. Neither<lb />
victim wanted to comment, said<lb />
their attorney.<lb />
In the 10 years between the<lb />
first complaint and the lawsuit, 10<lb />
women were victimized because of<lb />
the university's negligence, Deputy<lb />
Commissioner George T. Glenn II<lb />
said in the order. Glenn also said<lb />
the university had a pattern of<lb />
ignoring sexual misconduct.<lb />
It took years to get the ruling<lb />
because the N.C. Court of Appeals<lb />
first had to decide whether the<lb />
women, who had filed complaints<lb />
with the university, should<lb />
proceed in state court or before the<lb />
commission, which presides over<lb />
workplace claims against the state. <lb /><pb facs="00059336_tn_0003" /><lb />

Brown tries to dampen the high<lb />

An anti-capitalist protester confronts riot police lines with a placard in<lb />
the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland, Monday, ahead of the G-8 summit.<lb />
EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP)<lb />
 Tuesday Britain's Treasury chief<lb />
warned that anti-poverty cam-<lb />
paigners may be disappointed<lb />
when G-8 leaders announce their<lb />
package of aid to Africa.<lb />
Gordon Brown's effort to dampen<lb />
expectations came as Live 8 organizer<lb />
Bob Geldof traveled to the Scottish<lb />
capital, Edinburgh, to step up pres-<lb />
sure ahead of the G-8 summit, which<lb />
begins in Gleneagles Wednesday.<lb />
Geldof insisted the British govern-<lb />
ment should not be "lowering the<lb />
bar" of what the G-8 should achieve.<lb />
Brown is a driving force behind<lb />
British Prime Minister Tony Blair's<lb />
efforts to make aid to Africa a G-<lb />
8 priority. The Chancellor of the<lb />
Exchequer says helping the conti-<lb />
nent is the "greatest moral crusade<lb />
of our time" and is pushing for debt<lb />
relief, free trade and a doubling of<lb />
international aid.<lb />
But he told the British Broad-<lb />
casting Corp. Tuesday that he'd<lb />
warned campaigners the G-8 was<lb />
unlikely to meet their expectations.<lb />
"I know that you will tell us<lb />
we've got to do more. I know that<lb />
what you will say is that what we<lb />
can achieve is perhaps not good<lb />
enough Brown said he'd told cam-<lb />
paigners. "But we have got to bring<lb />
the whole of the world together.<lb />
What Britain says is one thing,<lb />
what we can persuade the rest of the<lb />
world to do together is what we will<lb />
get as the outcome of Gleneagles<lb />
Leaving London by train for<lb />
Edinburgh, Geldof said he was "not<lb />
prepared to be disappointed<lb />
"I don't think that is an<lb />
option he said. "I don't think<lb />
the Chancellor should try lower-<lb />
ing the bar at this stage. We have<lb />

grotesquely irresponsible. It is<lb />

NC woman ordered evicted from<lb />
apartment after being shot<lb />
JACKSONVILLE, NC - A woman<lb />
who survived six gunshot wounds<lb />
and a jump from her second-story<lb />
apartment balcony to escape the<lb />
man trying to kill her has been<lb />
served with an eviction notice for,<lb />
among other things, being too loud<lb />
or too obnoxious.<lb />
Dorothea Thomas, 39, was attacked<lb />
June 24. Wednesday, the day after<lb />
she returned to her apartment from Pitt<lb />
County Memorial Hospital in Greenville,<lb />
she found a notice on her front door,<lb />
ordering her to leave. First she thought<lb />
she had to leave by Monday, but she<lb />
learned Thursday that she has three<lb />
weeks to move out.<lb />
"I was not doing the violence. I was<lb />
the victim. I shouldn't be treated like<lb />
the perpetrator said Thomas, a former<lb />
Marine and Jacksonville police officer.<lb />
Peggy Piche, district manager of United<lb />
Dominion Residential Community,<lb />
which owns the apartment complex,<lb />
said in a news release Thursday that<lb />
United Dominion Residential was<lb />
saddened to hear about Thomas'<lb />
injuries but that she would still need<lb />
to move out.<lb />
Though we truly regret the difficulty<lb />
she has been through, it is in the best<lb />
interests of everyone involved that she<lb />
no longer resides at our property and<lb />
we are working with her to resolve this<lb />
issue as soon as possible said Piche.<lb />
According to the eviction notice,<lb />
Thomas and her guests cannot behave<lb />
in a loud or obnoxious manner. They<lb />
also can't disturb or "threaten the rights,<lb />
comfort, health, safety or convenience<lb />
of others (including agents and<lb />
employees) in or near the apartment<lb />
community, disrupting our business<lb />
operations<lb />
Thomas was hit in the right palm, right<lb />
forearm, right breast, upper left-chest,<lb />
left thigh and left buttocks. Doctors<lb />
are still waiting for the bullet in her<lb />
chest to move closer to the surface<lb />
before removing it. The one lodged<lb />
between her tailbone and hip won't<lb />
be removed unless it becomes too<lb />
painful, she said.<lb />
Pawtucket cancels July 4th<lb />
fireworks after game against<lb />
Charlotte<lb />
PAWTUCKET, R.I. - The Pawtucket Red<lb />
Sox canceled a July 4 fireworks display<lb />
after a game against the Charlotte<lb />
Knights Monday night because several<lb />
people suffered burns and other<lb />
injuries during a similar post-game<lb />
show a day earlier.<lb />
Two fans were injured when they<lb />
tripped and fell while trying to run away<lb />
Sunday, police said.<lb />
Officials said a fireworks shell<lb />
apparently exploded as soon as it<lb />
came out of its tube, shooting sideways<lb />
and triggering a "chain reaction" of<lb />
sparks, which ignited other fireworks<lb />
on the ground.<lb />
"They all started going off all at once<lb />
Battalion Fire Chief Michael Carter<lb />
said Monday.<lb />
The fireworks exploded in multiple<lb />
directions, with sparks hitting<lb />
a scoreboard and setting fire to<lb />
some bushes outside the stadium,<lb />
Carter said.<lb />
At least six people were treated<lb />
for minor injuries, including several<lb />
workers who suffered minor burns<lb />
while standing near the explosion.<lb />
The fireworks were part of<lb />
Independence Day celebrations at<lb />
the Triple A stadium, and had been<lb />
staged without incident on Saturday<lb />
night. They were canceled Monday "in<lb />
the interest of public safety" according<lb />
to the team's Web site.<lb />
The city's police and fire departments<lb />
are investigating the accident along<lb />
with the state Fire Marshal's Office. '<lb />
Monday's Red Sox game against<lb />
Charlotte was scheduled to go on as<lb />
planned, with Curt Schilling expected<lb />
to make a rehabilitative start for<lb />
Pawtucket.<lb />
Wilmington man attacked by<lb />
alligator In lake<lb />
WILMINGTON, NC - A 10-foot-long<lb />
alligator chomped down on a man's<lb />
right arm then let him go while the<lb />
man was swimming in a lake Sunday<lb />
afternoon, officials said.<lb />
Floyd Masters, who's around 40,<lb />
was treated for unknown injuries<lb />
Sunday night at New Hanover Regional<lb />
Medical Center. The injuries are not life<lb />
threatening, said Wilmington police Lt.<lb />
J.D. Varrone.<lb />
Masters, of Wilmington, told police<lb />
he was swimming in Greenfield Lake<lb />
when he was attacked by the powerful<lb />
reptile near a wooden observation<lb />
deck overlooking the water. Signs<lb />
prohibiting swimming or disturbing<lb />
alligators are posted around the lake.<lb />
Mike Core was standing on the deck<lb />
with a friend when he saw a man<lb />
go into the lake behind the city<lb />
pumping station.<lb />
"This dude jumped in the lake and<lb />
we saw him bobbing along in the<lb />
water and we saw the alligator<lb />
coming Core said. The alligator made<lb />
a beeline toward the disturbance<lb />
in the water created by Masters,<lb />
witnesses said.<lb />
"It latched right on to him. It was cutting<lb />
right across the water and it got him<lb />
Core said. "I kept telling him, The<lb />
alligator's coming. Get out! Get out<lb />
Core and his friend were able to get<lb />
Masters away from the shoreline, and<lb />
he used his shirt to make a tourniquet<lb />
for the bleeding arm. Core said Masters<lb />
also had bite marks on his chest,<lb />
stomach and hand.<lb />
State wildlife officials and local police<lb />
are investigating.<lb />
Masters was not available for<lb />
comment.<lb />
NC residents among dozens<lb />
arrested in SC for cockfightlng<lb />
FLORENCE, SC - Police have arrested<lb />
about 80 people on cockfighting and<lb />
animal cruelty charges in Chesterfield<lb />
County.<lb />
Chesterfield County Sheriff Sam Parker<lb />
said most of those arrested Saturday<lb />
were from Darlington and Kershaw<lb />
counties in South Carolina and Robeson<lb />
and Scotland counties in North Carolina.<lb />
Parker said the arrests were the result of<lb />
investigations during the past two years.<lb />
"We've missed out a couple of times<lb />
before Parker said. "We've been made<lb />
aware of cockfighting activity in this<lb />
area, but have been unsuccessful<lb />
in finding the location until today<lb />
A tip Saturday morning paid off and<lb />
brought Chesterfield deputies and<lb />
animal control officers to the McBee site.<lb />
Police seized chickens and cockfighting<lb />
equipment as well as thousands in<lb />
cash and two pounds of marijuana. The<lb />
also found evidence of cockfighting,<lb />
with about 100 chickens at the site,<lb />
including several that were dead.<lb />
"It's very trashy, very nasty and bloody<lb />
Parker said of the scene. "It's very<lb />
unsanitary, very depressing when<lb />
you see all those dead chickens<lb />
lying on the ground just looked like<lb />
a death arena<lb />
Investigators say participants were<lb />
vying for honors, including a 5-foot<lb />

Is tanning now worth all the wrinkles later?<lb />
Take one step outside a dorm<lb />
or apartment and there is one sight<lb />
you are sure to see on a sunny day:<lb />
people tanning. Girls and guys<lb />
alike get up in the morning with<lb />
one purpose in mind, to go outside<lb />
and soak up all ofthose warm, skin<lb />
damaging rays. What is the real<lb />
cost of this bronzed look though?<lb />
Everyone has done it. Looked at<lb />
someone with a great tan and thought<lb />
one of two things: "Wow, they have<lb />
a really great tan, I wish mine was<lb />
that good or "Look at that tanning<lb />
bed victim, they are going to be a<lb />
wrinkled piece of leather in 15 years<lb />
What is the real appeal of a tan?<lb />
Some people think it makes them<lb />
look skinnier, other people say that<lb />
it allows them to wear an array of<lb />
colorful clothes. Males seem to be<lb />
under the impression that their<lb />
physique will look more toned with<lb />
a straight off the beach tan. The<lb />
truth of the matter is, these few<lb />
years of bronzed glory are doing<lb />
irreversible damage to your skin.<lb />
Back in the 90s, the group of<lb />
teens everyone loved from the<lb />
zip code 90210 were some of the<lb />
best looking people of the time<lb />
and they were without tans. Yes,<lb />
they would lie in the sun at any<lb />
given chance but the starring<lb />
women, Jennie Garth and Shannon<lb />
Doherty had no tan at all, they<lb />
were actually bordering on the line<lb />
of too pale. Everyone wanted to<lb />
be Kelly or Brenda at some point.<lb />
What about Luke Perry and Jason<lb />
Priestley? They were some of the<lb />
hottest looking guys on television<lb />
and they did not have the gross<lb />
tanned look that guys seem to be<lb />
going for these days.<lb />
A flashback may not be enough<lb />
for some people to think about<lb />
their tanning habits but a look<lb />
at the present may be. There are<lb />
many entertainers and people of<lb />
authority today who do not sport<lb />
a tan. Gwen Stefani, one of the<lb />
best looking female vocalists out<lb />
there, does not have a tan at all.<lb />
When asked about her skin care<lb />
by magazines, Gwen says she uses<lb />
self tanner when she has the desire<lb />
to look tan. Eminem, on the male<lb />
side of things, is not one to go to a<lb />
tanning bed or lie in the sun. Both<lb />
of these artists have hugely success-<lb />
ful careers and no tan.<lb />
If examples of successful, beau-<lb />
tiful people are not enough, what<lb />
about skin cancer? According to<lb />
Coppertone, the founders of the<lb />
Sun Safety Alliance, more than one<lb />
million new cases of skin cancer are<lb />
diagnosed each year. Skin cancer is<lb />
the fastest growing cancer among<lb />
Americans, which is partly attrib-<lb />
uted to the fact that each sunburn<lb />
someone has doubles their chances<lb />
of getting skin cancer.<lb />
A popular defense among tan-<lb />
ners is, "I am wearing some sun-<lb />
screen so I don't get burned<lb />
Though protection from an ugly<lb />
burn is great, any color from the<lb />
sun is skin damage that can never<lb />
be reversed. Outdoor tanning and<lb />
tanning bed use now will greatly<lb />
increase the risk of squamous cell<lb />
carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma<lb />
and melanoma in the future. Next<lb />
time you get ready to go to the<lb />
tanning bed or lay out for the day,<lb />
think about whether this tan is<lb />
worth all of the nasty wrinkles and<lb />
possible skin cancer later in life.<lb />
Should homeless shelters charge to stay?<lb />
You know the world has gone<lb />
crazy when homeless shelters are<lb />
charging people to sleep under a<lb />
previously fee-free roof. Welcome<lb />
to Greenville.<lb />
Why are they making the<lb />
homeless pay? Because the fee<lb />
will help fund programs to get the<lb />
homeless off the streets.<lb />
Watching a representative from<lb />
the shelter tell a reporter that $3 is<lb />
not a lot of money to ask for is baf-<lb />
fling. Sure, to the common Ameri-<lb />
can resident, it isn't. However when<lb />
a man has to beg for change all day<lb />
and finally raises those $3, should<lb />
he give up his only meal so he can<lb />
sleep in a place he could previously<lb />
s,tay at for free?<lb />
That means the only people<lb />
who can take advantage of these<lb />
programs are those who were lucky<lb />
enough to find work in a town<lb />
where educated college students<lb />
and graduates cannot find suitable<lb />
employment.<lb />
There are college students,<lb />
parents, even homeowners who<lb />
at this moment cannot spare $3<lb />
because their next check won't<lb />
be available until the following<lb />
week. But we expect the homeless<lb />
to provide it?<lb />
Of course there are homeless<lb />
people who use any money they<lb />
find to buy alcohol and drugs, so it<lb />
is hard to defend their need for free<lb />
help. However there are many people<lb />
who, for whatever reason, cannot<lb />
make ends meet and have found<lb />
themselves on the street. These<lb />
are the people we should do what<lb />
we can to help without question.<lb />
Why can't the shelter get the<lb />
money from fundraisers and grants<lb />
to implement these programs? Is<lb />
there really a shortage of volunteers<lb />
who can work with these programs<lb />
without pay? There must be some<lb />
students in town, high school and<lb />
college students, who need volun-<lb />
teer hours for organizations, schol-<lb />
arships and resumes. They would<lb />
receive so much more experience<lb />
and pride from doing something to<lb />
help those in such desperate need.<lb />
As students at' ECU, Greenville is<lb />
our community as long as we are<lb />
here, and we should do something<lb />
to help it.<lb />

Muslims plan own cemetery<lb />
in Winston-Salem, NC<lb />
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP)<lb />
 Had there been a Muslim ceme-<lb />
tery closer to his home in Winston-<lb />
Salem, Bashir El-Beshti wouldn't<lb />
have been burled in Burlington,<lb />
about 50 miles to the east.<lb />
That's where the nearest<lb />
Muslim cemetery is located.<lb />
But his death March 18 and<lb />
his burial at the other end of<lb />
the Triad has sparked a movement<lb />
by local Muslims to develop their<lb />
own cemetery.<lb />
"That awakened us to the need,<lb />
that we needed something here<lb />
said Sam Atassi, president of the<lb />
Muslim Association of the Triad.<lb />
If city officials OK the pro-<lb />
posed rezoning, the cemetery<lb />
would have the capacity for 330<lb />
graves on just over two acres in<lb />
southern Winston-Salem, about<lb />
one for every Muslim family in the<lb />
Triad. According to the site plan,<lb />
about 1 13 acres would be used for<lb />
the cemetery.<lb />
Islam, like other religions, has<lb />
specific rituals for burying the<lb />
dead. A body must be washed and<lb />
then wrapped in a funeral shroud.<lb />
It's not buried in a coffin or casket<lb />
and it's placed on its side to face<lb />
Mecca, known as the birthplace<lb />
of Muhammad, the founder of<lb />
Islam, said Abdul Majid, the vice<lb />
president and project director for<lb />
the Pakistani Islamic Association<lb />
of North Carolina.<lb />
Not all Muslims are buried in<lb />
Muslim cemeteries. Irshad Hasan,<lb />
the imam of Masjid Al-Mu'minun<lb />
mosque in Winston-Salem, said<lb />
that Muslims born in the United<lb />
States often have come from a<lb />
Christian background and already<lb />
have plots in cemeteries picked by<lb />
their families.<lb />
Hasan said that Muslims who<lb />
have died in his mosque have been<lb />
buried in such cemeteries, but<lb />
they are buried according to<lb />
Islamic rituals.<lb />
The association owns the cem-<lb />
etery in Burlington, which has been<lb />
there for about 15 years. The group<lb />
recently built its Pakistani Islamic<lb />
Center next to it.<lb />
The City-County Planning<lb />
Board is scheduled to consider<lb />
the rezoning request July 14. It<lb />
will make a recommendation to<lb />
the Winston-Salem City Council,<lb />
which has final authority on the<lb />
rezoning.<lb />
No proposed opening date for<lb />
the cemetery was available.<lb />

What to do when these<lb />
storms show their ugly<lb />

TREVOR KIRKENDALL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Who will it be this year? Gert?<lb />
Irene? Jose? Katrtna? Which one<lb />
of these storms will be the one<lb />
to achieve hurricane status and<lb />
slam into our coast without any<lb />
mercy at all?<lb />
It's that time of year again.<lb />
Hurricane season Is now upon<lb />
us. If there's any area in the state<lb />
that knows how destructive these<lb />
storms can be, It is eastern North<lb />
Carolina.<lb />
Some of us were at ECU when<lb />
hurricane Floyd ripped through In<lb />
1999 leaving most of Greenville<lb />
under water. People lost their<lb />
homes, their possessions and some<lb />
even lost their lives during that<lb />
storm. Even when warnings are<lb />
given to the city well in advance,<lb />
there is still very little that can<lb />
be done to protect property and<lb />
people from these storms.<lb />
So what exactly are these<lb />
storms? And how can we better<lb />
prepare ourselves when these<lb />
unwelcome guests come knock-<lb />
ing this fall? According to the<lb />
National Oceanic and Atmo-<lb />
spheric Administration, a hur-<lb />
ricane is one type of tropical<lb />
cyclone, which is a generic term<lb />
for a non-frontal synoptic scale<lb />
low-pressure system over tropical<lb />
or sub-tropical waters with thun-<lb />
derstorm activity and definite<lb />
cyclonic surface wind circulation.<lb />
They start out as tropical depres-<lb />
sions, which have sustained winds<lb />
of less than 39 mph. Anything<lb />
more than 39 mph, but less than<lb />
74 mph is a tropical storm. Once It<lb />
reaches 74 mph and above, we have<lb />
the conventional hurricane.<lb />
Watches and warnings are<lb />
Issued weeks in advance to help<lb />
people prepare for many of the<lb />
different hazards caused by a hur-<lb />
ricane, such as storm surges, high<lb />
winds, flooding and tornados.<lb />
A hurricane's intensity is<lb />
measured on the Safflr-Simpson<lb />
Scale. This scale places hurricanes<lb />
in five different categories. A<lb />
Category One hurricane contains<lb />
winds from 74-95 mph. The storm<lb />
surge will rise to about four or five<lb />
feet above normal and will deliver<lb />
minimum damage. A Category<lb />
Two hurricane has winds rang-<lb />
ing from 96-110 mph with six<lb />
to eight foot storm surge. T$fese<lb />
storms will deliver some<lb />
tural damage, but most will<lb />
trees and other plants. 3<lb />
Three hurricane has i<lb />
111-130 mph and i<lb />
nine to 12 feet<lb />
tout<lb />
damage to residences and to some<lb />
larger buildings. A Category Five<lb />
hurricane is rare. They have wind<lb />
speeds of over 155 mph and a<lb />
storm surge greater than 18 feet.<lb />
These storms will cause buildings<lb />
to collapse and major damages to<lb />
residences Including the flooding<lb />
of basements and first floors. The<lb />
strongest Category Five hurricane<lb />
to date is Hurricane Gilbert in<lb />
1988. The most recent was Hur-<lb />
ricane Mitch In 1998 that hit<lb />
Central America and killed over<lb />
9,000 people, mainly due to the<lb />
amount of flooding.<lb />
Once these warnings are issued<lb />
and it looks like the hurricane is on<lb />
a head on collision course for our<lb />
area, it is time to take action and<lb />
have a plan of what to do. With<lb />
the threat of a hurricane, there is<lb />
always the possibility that the high<lb />
winds and flooding may take out<lb />
the electricity for quite some time.<lb />
This is why the National Hurricane<lb />
Center and the NOAA recommend<lb />
putting a hurricane supply kit<lb />
together before the storm strikes.<lb />
This kit should Include water (one<lb />
gallon per day per person for three<lb />
to seven days), food (non-perish-<lb />
able canned foods, snacks and<lb />
paper plates with plastic utensils),<lb />
seasonal clothing, toiletries, a<lb />
first-aid kit, a flashlight with extra<lb />
batteries, a battery powered radio,<lb />
cash, keys, important documents<lb />
(kept In a waterproof, container)<lb />
and tools. One thing that not many<lb />
people think about is the need for<lb />
prescription medications. If there<lb />
is a hurricane watch or warning, be<lb />
sure to refill all of your medil<lb />
that may be needed. You sH<lb />
also fill you car up with a full 1<lb />
of gas because if the power i<lb />
pumps will not wort<lb />
great canned foods,<lb />

grill are ready t<lb />
ed patas and <lb />
When thepower is i<lb />

their cool. Toi<lb />
on iD of the i<lb />
Ither keef them<lb />
or eat <lb />
dspollr<lb />
e should heed the<lb />
that the storm Is coming.<lb />
 a rple of hurrlcBies have moved<lb />
Greenville over the last few<lb />
years and many students decided to<lb />
stay aad wade out the storm. These<lb />
storms were nothing more than<lb />
Category Three hurricanes and did<lb />
little to effect the daily routines of<lb />
people In Greenville. The NOAA<lb />
predicts a very active hurricane<lb />
season this year. If there's a Cat-<lb />
egory Five that's due to hit this area,<lb />
make up your mind now as to what<lb />
you want to do. If you leave, leave<lb />
early enough. If you stay, heed the<lb />
warnings and be ready for what's<lb />
coming. Hurricanes are nothing<lb />
more than giant thunderstorms.<lb />
Thunderstorms may be neat to fall<lb />
asleep to, but a hurricane Is a tot<lb />
more than that.<lb />

SDielberq and Cruise lose 'War of the Worlds'<lb />
Tom Cruise plays Ray Ferrier who is the main character of the movie.<lb />
New film fails on<lb />
nearly all levels<lb />
TREVOR KIRKENDALL<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
After cranking out nothing<lb />
but good films over the last five<lb />
years, director Steven Spielberg<lb />
has finally put out a dud. And not<lb />
just any dud, War of the Worlds<lb />
is Spielberg's worst film since his<lb />
World War II comedy 1941, which<lb />
was released in 1979. Spielberg's<lb />
$128 million version is a disorga-<lb />
nized mess that boarders on being<lb />
completely incoherent.<lb />
War of the Worlds is a big budget<lb />
adaptation of the classic H.G. Wells<lb />
novel of the same name. This is not<lb />
a remake of the Byron Haskin film<lb />
from 1953, but rather a modernized<lb />
adaptation from the classic book.<lb />
Hollywood superstar Tom<lb />
Cruise is Ray Ferrier, a blue collar<lb />
worker from New Jersey. Ray is a<lb />
divorced father of two. His wife<lb />
Mary Ann (Miranda Otto of Lord<lb />
of the Rings fame) has left him with<lb />
the kids, Robbie and Rachel (Justin<lb />
Chatwin and Dakota Fanning),<lb />
this particular weekend. As she<lb />
leaves, Cruise tells her that she has<lb />
"nothing to worry about" - famous<lb />
last words in this type of generic<lb />
summer blockbuster film.<lb />
Not long after Mary Ann leaves,<lb />
a lighting storm passes over the<lb />
area, mysteriously striking the same<lb />
places more than once. But this is<lb />
no ordinary lightning. This electric<lb />
shock is turning on alien machines<lb />
that have been buried under our<lb />
very feet for millions of years. Soon,<lb />
these tripod machines break free<lb />
from the ground and start blowing<lb />
up everything in their paths. But<lb />
for what reason? There's no expla-<lb />
nation as to why these aliens are<lb />
destroying our planet.<lb />
"They watched with envious<lb />
eyes says Morgan Freeman in the<lb />
narration at the beginning. How<lb />
did these aliens know when they<lb />
buried these tripods millions of<lb />
years ago that there were going<lb />
to be humans walking this planet<lb />
someday and would prosper to a<lb />
point where there would be a need<lb />
to destroy us?<lb />
This all lasts roughly 30 min-<lb />
utes, and it looks pretty promising<lb />
from there. However, the film comes<lb />
to a dead stop as soon as the killer<lb />
tripods appear. For the remaining<lb />
hour and a half of the film, we<lb />
sit and watch Cruise run around<lb />
with his kids, trying to escape the<lb />
tripods. They run and run and run<lb />
some more, and the film drags on<lb />
until the point where I thought I<lb />
was going to get a rash.<lb />
Cruise has selected better roles<lb />
in the past. He walks around with<lb />
this dumbfounded look on his<lb />
face that is unrealistic and almost<lb />
humorous at times, almost like<lb />
Simon Pegg in the British horror-<lb />
comedy Shaun of the Dead. Dakota<lb />
Fanning is usually very solid,<lb />
upstaging the award winning actors<lb />
she works along side. She's a little<lb />
over the top for this role. She spends<lb />
the majority of the time scream-<lb />
ing at the top of her lungs. This<lb />
role does the talented young lady<lb />
no justice. After about the first 30<lb />
seconds of this, it gets a little old.<lb />
The best role played in this film<lb />
is that of Tim Robbins, who plays<lb />
Ogilvy, a crazed man hiding out<lb />
in his basement who thinks they<lb />
can lead a revolution against the<lb />
tripods. His part is short, and once<lb />
he is gone we miss him.<lb />
The special effects are nothing<lb />
short of impressive, as expected.<lb />
And what more can we expect from<lb />
just another summer blockbuster?<lb />
Spielberg does succeed on one level,<lb />
and that is keeping the special<lb />
effects a secondary entity. Unlike<lb />
some films where the special effects<lb />
and computer generated images are<lb />
the focal points from beginning to<lb />
end; Spielberg puts his actors in<lb />
front with the effects of destruction<lb />
in the background.<lb />
Screenwriter David Koepp is<lb />
one of Hollywood's worst screen-<lb />
writers. Why Spielberg keeps turn-<lb />
ing to him to write for his films<lb />
and other films that come out of<lb />
his DreamWorks studios is beyond<lb />
me. Koepp's usage of humor is<lb />
timed wrong in every single film he<lb />
scripts. Although the humor is kept<lb />
to a minimum in War of the Worlds,<lb />
it is still out of place whenever it<lb />
does show up. Koepp has botched<lb />
this classic H.G. Wells story in more<lb />
ways than just adding out of place<lb />
humor. In the novel, the space<lb />
ships came out of the sky. Koepp<lb />
tried a new approach by having<lb />
the machines buried in the earth<lb />
for millions of years. He must have<lb />
forgotten that we are industrial-<lb />
ized people who dig in the ground<lb />
to build oil rigs, subways systems,<lb />
sewer systems, electrical systems,<lb />
telephone wires and much more.<lb />
How is it possible that all of these<lb />
tripods went unseen for millions of<lb />
years all across the world? Someone<lb />
must have discovered one some-<lb />
where at sometime. Spielberg and<lb />
Koepp should have stuck with the<lb />
original way; it would have been<lb />
just as intense, if not more so.<lb />
War of the Worlds could also be<lb />
evidence that this legendary film-<lb />

This film seems to be a direct<lb />
carbon copy of another Spielberg<lb />
film. Does anyone remember a<lb />
movie called Jurassic Park? Tell me<lb />
if this sounds familiar. War of the<lb />
Worlds shows a man and two kids<lb />
running away from mysterious<lb />
monster-like beings with the power<lb />
to kill and destroy almost anything<lb />
it comes across. The only difference<lb />
is that Jurassic Park actually worked,<lb />
except for the ending where every-<lb />
one just leaves and dinosaurs are<lb />
left to rule this one little island.<lb />
Well, the ending of War of the<lb />
Worlds is also a let down. It is one<lb />
of the most laughable endings in<lb />
the history of cinema. The book<lb />
explains it quite well, but Spiel-<lb />
berg does not. I guess $128 million<lb />
doesn't buy you an explanation<lb />
of the resolution these days. It's<lb />
very anti-climactic and leaves us<lb />
very angry as we leave the theater.<lb />
There's even a direct copy of the ter-<lb />
rifying kitchen scene in Jurassic Park<lb />
shown in this film. It is identical<lb />
from the looks of the actor's faces<lb />
to the camera angles. However, it<lb />
looked much better 12 years ago.<lb />
We've seen it before, Mr. Spielberg.<lb />
Show us something new.<lb />
I have no doubt that Spielberg<lb />
will once again crank out another<lb />
masterpiece of a film in the same<lb />
realms of Schindler's List and Saving<lb />
Private Ryan, but War of the Worlds<lb />
was not even close to that caliber<lb />
a film. It is far from it, and ranks<lb />
among the worst both Spielberg<lb />
and Cruise have ever been apart of.<lb />

SPORTS EDITOR<lb />
The Big Stories<lb />
It's near the halfway point in<lb />
the season and it is a very different<lb />
MLB than we're used to seeing by<lb />
this time. Well, on the field it's dif-<lb />
ferent. Off the field everything is up<lb />
to par. Trade rumors are swirling,<lb />
players are being moved around left<lb />
and right, suspensions loom over<lb />
several players' heads and there is<lb />
much debate about this year's All<lb />
Star rosters.<lb />
Dirty laundry first.<lb />
Maybe it's the Texas heat but<lb />
Kenny Rogers now makes two Rang-<lb />
ers' pitchers in the last two years<lb />
who have had violent outbursts<lb />
on the field. Rogers was suspended<lb />
by MLB just one day after Frank<lb />
Francisco was sentenced to a work<lb />
program and anger management<lb />
classes after pleading guilty to<lb />
misdemeanor assault. As you may<lb />
remember, the Texas reliever was<lb />
suspended 15 games last year<lb />
after his chair-throwing incident.<lb />
Rogers was suspended 20 games for<lb />
shoving a cameraman and destroy-<lb />
ing the camera. The suspension<lb />
marks the longest punishment<lb />
handed down by the administra-<lb />
tion in decades. Only a 30-day<lb />
stint imposed on Pete Rose in 1988<lb />
was longer.<lb />
There has been much debate<lb />
over whether Rogers should have<lb />
made the All Star game due to<lb />
his recent behavior. Here are two<lb />
simple reasons why Rogers should<lb />
definitely be in the All Star Game<lb />
- Nine wins, 2.45 ERA.<lb />
Behavior is never a question of<lb />
whether or not a player will make<lb />
it to the All Star game, it should<lb />
be determined by how they have<lb />
done up until this point. Rogers<lb />
has been one of the best in the AL<lb />
so far this year. This incident also<lb />
occurred so recently, that judging a<lb />
man from one mistake he made no<lb />
more than a week or two before the<lb />
All Star selections would be harsh<lb />
and unjust.<lb />
Leaving Rogers for now, as I said<lb />
before, All Star selections should be<lb />
made on the performance players<lb />
have put up to this point. So is it not<lb />
one of the greatest injustices and big-<lb />
gest jokes of all time that Scott Rolen<lb />
and Carlos Beltran are starting for the<lb />
NL squad next week? Rolen was on<lb />
the DL for most of the first half with a<lb />
shoulder in jury and is now hitting a<lb />
mighty .266 with five homeruns and<lb />
24 RBI. That was Morgan Ensberg's<lb />

MLB from page M2<lb />
first three weeks of this season.<lb />
The young Houston third base-<lb />
man is boasting a clip of .290 with<lb />
22 homeruns and 60 RBI. The 22<lb />
homers is two more than Yankees<lb />
megastar Alex Rodriguez. And this<lb />
kid didn't even make it as a backup.<lb />
What about Beltran? He has<lb />
been nagged by small injuries<lb />
much of this year and has been<lb />
the leading underachiever on a<lb />
team full of them, batting .266<lb />
with nine homeruns and 41 RBI.<lb />
Teammate Mike Cameron would<lb />
have deserved a starting spot more<lb />
than Beltran and he was hurt for all<lb />
of April and some of May. Memo to<lb />
baseball fans - Get a clue. Memo to<lb />
Bud Selig - you're in the same boat<lb />
as the fans.<lb />
If home field advantage for<lb />
the World Series is going to be<lb />
determined by the outcome of<lb />
the All Star game, which is bogus<lb />
in and of itself, then please have<lb />
the temerity to make sure the<lb />
absolutely best squads are chosen<lb />
from each league. This is going to<lb />
look more like a slow-pitch softball<lb />
game between the 1932 New York<lb />
Yankees and the Bad News Bears<lb />
than it will an All Star game.<lb />
Surprises at the halfway point<lb />
I feel as if all existence should<lb />
stop and end immediately by<lb />
saying this, but it hasn't yet so we<lb />
must be in good shape - The Wash-<lb />
ington Nationals are leading in<lb />
the NL East. A first-year team with<lb />
maybe three recognizable names<lb />
on the entire roster is leading by<lb />
4.5 games over the "we-win-the-<lb />
East-every-year-but-can't-win-a-<lb />
ring-if-our-life-depended-on-it"<lb />
Atlanta Braves.<lb />
This is no fluke either. This<lb />
Nationals team may very well be for<lb />
real. Nick Johnson is finally having<lb />
his first seemingly healthy year, hit-<lb />
ting .320 with 8 homeruns and 42<lb />
RBI. Jose Guillen has been an abso-<lb />
lute monster for the Nats as he leads<lb />
the team in homers (17) RBI (47) and<lb />
runs (47). Livan Hernande has been<lb />
stellar on the mound, winning 12<lb />
games thus far, and closer Chad Cor-<lb />
dero leads the league in saves with<lb />
29. The team's six-game winning,<lb />
streak ended Monday as the Mets<lb />
handed the Nats a 5-2 loss.<lb />
Another Guillen has been a big<lb />
part of a big surprise in the league<lb />
this year as Manager Ozzie Guillen<lb />
has led the Chicago White Sox to<lb />
the top of their division early. The<lb />

AL Central, leading by an 8.5 games<lb />
over Minnesota. Pitching has been<lb />
the highlight for the team as Mark<lb />
Beuhrle and John Garland have<lb />
1 provided the best one-two punch in<lb />
the league, combining for 23 wins<lb />
and just five losses. Then factor in<lb />
Freddy Garcia's resurgence (8-3,<lb />
3.29 ERA) and you have one of the<lb />
best staff's in MLB.<lb />
Can anyone say Triple Crown?<lb />
Derrek Lee is having a God-like<lb />
season, hitting a ridiculous .378<lb />
with 25 homeruns (good for second<lb />
in the league behind Andruw Jones)<lb />
and 67 RBI. He leads MLB in average<lb />
and is a close second in homeruns<lb />
, and RBI to Jones and Carlos Lee<lb />
respectively. Lee has finally learned<lb />
how to shorten his swing and get to<lb />
the high, inside pitches that hurl-<lb />
ers have been jamming down his<lb />
throat for most of his career. Now<lb />
however, there isn't a pitch in the<lb />
book that Lee can't hit. Lee has a<lb />
legitimate shot to take down the<lb />
I first Triple Crown since 1967 when<lb />
Red Sock Carl Yastrzemski earned<lb />
the title in the AL.<lb />
Top Five Fantasy Players<lb />
1) Travis Haf ner - The young<lb />
Cleveland Indians slugger was out<lb />
of this world last week, hitting .469<lb />
with 5 homeruns, 15 RBI and 11<lb />
runs. Hafner had a monster day<lb />
on the fourth of July, going 6-10<lb />
with three bombs, six RBI and four<lb />
runs. If you had enough foresight<lb />
to notice this kid's potential and<lb />
patience to deal with Cleveland's<lb />
slow start to the season, you've<lb />
reaped many benefits so far this<lb />
season. He should be a mainstay in<lb />
our everyday lineup.<lb />
2) Morgan Ensberg - Perhaps<lb />
the biggest All Star snub in the<lb />
history of the game, Houston's All<lb />
Star caliber third baseman boasted<lb />
a clip of .387, scoring seven runs,<lb />
knocking in 13 and blasting four<lb />
out of the yard. Ensberg has been a<lb />
pleasant surprise for both the Astros<lb />
and fantasy owners this season, as<lb />
he and Lance Berkman have single-<lb />
handedly resurrected Houston's<lb />
offense. There's no reason to believe<lb />
Ensberg will slow down in the<lb />
second half so keep him on the hot<lb />
corner in your lineup.<lb />
3) David Dellucci - Believe<lb />
it or not, the Texas Rangers have<lb />
offensive threats in spots other<lb />
than their infield. The Texas left-<lb />
fielder hit three homeruns, scor-<lb />
ing nine times and driving in four<lb />
while batting .421 for the week.<lb />
Dellucci is at best a decent out-<lb />
fielder, both in the field and at the<lb />
plate. It is unlikely he'll keep a pace<lb />
like this for the rest of the season, or<lb />
anything close to it. However, if he<lb />
continues his hot streak, you may<lb />
want to try and sell high on him<lb />

4) Brian Roberts - The former<lb />
Tar Heel and young Oriole's second<lb />
baseman has been stellar this season<lb />
and continued his excellence at the<lb />
plate last week. Roberts hit three<lb />
homeruns with six runs and six RBI<lb />
with a clip of .304. Robert's batting<lb />
average was down this past week<lb />
but he is almost automatic to be on<lb />
base at least once every game. He<lb />
found his power stroke recently and<lb />
when he hits for both power and<lb />
average, he's more valuable than<lb />
just about any position player in<lb />
the league because of his ability to<lb />
steal bases also.<lb />
5) Vladimir Guerrero -<lb />
Vlad has been unbelievable<lb />
after coming off of the DL<lb />
in early June. Last week he<lb />
hit an even .400 with three<lb />
homers, eight RBI and five runs.<lb />
When Vlad went on the DL<lb />
because of a partially dislocated<lb />
shoulder in mid-May, he was hit-<lb />
ting .303 with seven homeruns,<lb />
24 RBI and 24 runs. Since coming<lb />
back on June 10' he's raised his<lb />
average to .348, his homerun<lb />
total to 15 and has doubled his<lb />
RBI total. Keeping this guy in<lb />
your lineup and on your team<lb />
permanently is a no-brainer.<lb />
