STAFF WRITER<lb />
Over the past couple of se-<lb />
mesters, students taking software<lb />
engineering classes have helped<lb />
to bring about an online campus<lb />
and an array of services called<lb />
'Virtual ECU<lb />
Dr. Mohammad labrizzi, as-<lb />
sociate professor of computer sci-<lb />
ence, developed this program in<lb />
1998 through his software engi-<lb />
neering class, hoping to educate<lb />
students in a different manner.<lb />
"I educate students by en-<lb />
couraging them to learn<lb />
Tabrizzi said. "When they start,<lb />
they aren't ready, we educate<lb />
them<lb />
The students run the entire<lb />
system under the instruction of<lb />
Tabrizzi, demonstrating the capa-<lb />
bilities of the students develop-<lb />
ing usable software systems.<lb />
According to Tabrizzi, no<lb />
other university to date offers<lb />
students this type of hands-on<lb />
experience. Furthermore, no<lb />
other institution allows students<lb />
the power and ability to work<lb />
with these high-tech tools. Stu-<lb />
dents are responsible for doing<lb />
research as well as designing blue<lb />
prints to constantly improve and<lb />
update the program.<lb />
At this point, some of the<lb />
highlighted features include a<lb />
virtual map of all of the build-<lb />
ings on campus and a walking<lb />
route from building to building<lb />
in addition to floor maps of each<lb />
building to aid in finding the<lb />
exact locations of classrooms. In<lb />
addition, the program has a<lb />
number of goals that are featured<lb />
on the Web page including; mak-<lb />
ing the adviser process easier,<lb />
providing the faculty and stu-<lb />
dents online service, automating<lb />
some traditional paperwork tasks<lb />
and allowing the students to de-<lb />
velop the system with help<lb />
from the faculty and staff.<lb />
In the future, the system will<lb />
feature virtual home finders<lb />
where a student can locate the<lb />
ideal apartment according to<lb />
their standards, an online book<lb />
exchange and even a system that<lb />
helps college students find car<lb />
deals by communicating online<lb />
with various dealerships.<lb />
"This shows the potential of<lb />
students and this method of<lb />
mentoring should be involved in<lb />
all teaching said Daniel Cox, a<lb />
senior majoring in computer sci-<lb />
ence.<lb />
"I honestly think it's a good<lb />
cause Tabrizzi said. "It's going<lb />
to make it<lb />
On Nov. 27,1999, Dr. Tabrizzi<lb />
and his students presented a<lb />
new idea to the mayor of<lb />
Greenville, a project known as<lb />
Virtual Greenville. This system is<lb />
similar to its predecessor but it<lb />
features community support<lb />
and will focus on fostering the<lb />
community of Greenville.<lb />

The Student Recreation Center (SRC) cel-<lb />
ebrated its third anniversary this month.<lb />
In addition to the numerous exercise machines,<lb />
indoor track, raquetball and basketball courts,<lb />
climbing wall and swimming pools, the Rec Cen-<lb />
ter has other amenities<lb />
Terry Edwards, a program assistant for A-Rise,<lb />
said the SRC has opened many doors for students<lb />
and staff with disabilities.<lb />
"So many activities and opportunities are avail-<lb />
, a)le to students and staff with disabilities<lb />
Edwards said. "Before the SRC was built, those with<lb />
disabilities could not take advantage of<lb />
Christenbury Gym due to its inaccessibilty for the<lb />
handicapped. They also had difficulty getting into<lb />
Minges and using the equipment because they had<lb />
to work around the athletics schedules<lb />
Edwards said that in addition to the equipment<lb />
available to students at the SRC there are also many<lb />
programs available.<lb />
"Programs for students with disabilities are al-<lb />
ways available for students Edwards said. "This<lb />
week alone, the SRC is sponsoring Wheel Power<lb />
volleyball, wheel chair basketball and the Wheel<lb />
Power dance group<lb />
According to John Brown, coordinator of the<lb />
adventure program, the SRC offers an alternative<lb />
form of recreation, and is a place where Edwards<lb />
can sponsor programs for A-Rise.<lb />
"We regularly sponsor activities for students<lb />
which may not have always been available to<lb />
them Brown said. "Our programs range from rock<lb />
climbing and skiing to surfing, canoeing and<lb />
kayaking<lb />
All are welcome to participate in the activities<lb />
sponsored. He also said programs are planned for<lb />
students with disabilities.<lb />
"Last weekend the SRC took students with dis-<lb />
abilities to Ski Beach, N.C Brown said. "And we<lb />
are in the process of planning a kayaking trip on<lb />
open water. Usually students practice in the SRC<lb />
pool so we can make out what equipment is best<lb />
equipped for them<lb />
Junior Caneshia McAllister said the opportuni-<lb />
ties at the SRC are endless and have opened many<lb />
doors for her.<lb />
" never thought I would be able to participate<lb />
in so many activities McAllister said. "The pro-<lb />
grams and accessibility of them have been very<lb />
helpful to me. I've been given the chance to expe-<lb />
rience things I never dreamed of, like water and<lb />
snow skiing, kayaking and climbing, along with<lb />
racquetball, basketball, and swimming. I never<lb />
knew that there were other ways to participate in<lb />
sports, but the SRC has offered me the insight and<lb />
I love it<lb />

Students sponsor march for flood victims<lb />
More thanS 1,000<lb />
raised for Relief Fund<lb />
T. L. Register<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Students Patrick Charland<lb />
and Trevor Austin helped raise<lb />
over $1,000 for flood victims by<lb />
organizing a walk-a-thon<lb />
through the Student Volunteer<lb />
Program.<lb />
Austin and Charland went to<lb />
see Judy Baker, director of the<lb />
Student Volunteer Program,<lb />
wanting to do something to help<lb />
those affected by Hurricane<lb />
Floyd across eastern North Caro-<lb />
lina after the flooding.<lb />
"They came to me and I ex-<lb />
plained the nature of how things<lb />
work and gave them the names<lb />
of people they could contact to<lb />
help with advertising Baker<lb />
said. "The volunteer program<lb />
helped provide volunteers and<lb />
we printed the posters, but they<lb />
did all of the leg work. They were<lb />
very energetic and very respon-<lb />
sible about the whole thing<lb />
With the help of the Student<lb />
Volunteer Program, over 100<lb />
hours each of their own time and<lb />
energy, along with the aid of stu-<lb />
dents and locals around the area,<lb />
they were able to hold the "Road<lb />
to Recovery March" on Oct. 22.<lb />
The event was held at the E.B.<lb />
Aycock Middle School track<lb />
and raised $1254.75 for the ECU<lb />
Family Relief Fund.<lb />
"We thought about doing it,<lb />
and it worked Charland said.<lb />
"It was just nice to see everyone<lb />
come out and support the com-<lb />
munity<lb />
Students from organizations<lb />
such as Theta Chi fraternity and<lb />
Alpha Xi Delta sorority pitched<lb />
in to help raise funds by getting<lb />
individual sponsors and walking<lb />
during the march.<lb />
A small group of students<lb />
from Appalachian State Univer-<lb />

Funerals held for Seton Hall fire victims crime scene<lb />
LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP)The<lb />
grief-stricken friends and family of<lb />
three Seton Hall University fresh-<lb />
men who died in a dormitory fire<lb />
gathered Monday- to mourn and<lb />
wonder why.<lb />
But there were no answers. Not<lb />
at St. Jerome Roman Catholic<lb />
Church, where Frank S. Caltabilota<lb />
Jr. was remembered in a 90-minute<lb />
Mass.<lb />
Not at St. Francis of Assisi in<lb />
Vineland, where John Giunta was<lb />
laid to rest.<lb />
And not at St. John the Evange-<lb />

Dunellen, where Aaron Karol was<lb />
remembered as a "near-perfect kid<lb />
"Today our faith cannot answer<lb />
the question why said the Rev.<lb />
William Sheridan, assistant director<lb />
of campus ministry at Seton Hall.<lb />
"Why did three die? Why did John<lb />
die? Why?"<lb />
Caltabilota, of West i.ong<lb />
Branch, was a three-sport standout<lb />
at Shore Regional High School who<lb />
aspired to a career in medicine. An<lb />
honor student, he compared him-<lb />
self in his Seton Hall application<lb />
essay to a basketball player who<lb />
chooses to pass to an open team-<lb />
mate instead of shooting the ball<lb />
himself.<lb />
"My school counselor says that<lb />
I am a natural caretaker. Maybe she's<lb />
right Caltabilota wrote.<lb />
More than 8(X) people filled St.<lb />
Jerome for the service.<lb />
Caltabilota's girlfriend, Frin<lb />
Brown, 18, had to pause several<lb />
times during a five-minute eulogy<lb />
to gather herself. "You touched the<lb />
lives of so many people, even if<lb />
you'd only known them five min-<lb />
utes Brown said.<lb />
In Dunellen, about 450 people<lb />
crowded into St. John the Evange-<lb />
list Roman Catholic Church to say<lb />
goodbye to Karol, of Green Brook,<lb />
a soccer enthusiast and criminal jus-<lb />
tice major who hoped someday to<lb />
work for the FBI.<lb />
"He was just an all-round, near-<lb />
perfect kid said Jimmy Byrnes, 17,<lb />
a socceT teammate at Watchung<lb />
Hills Regional High School. "He had<lb />
everything sports, popularity,<lb />
smarts<lb />
Weeping teenagers carried the<lb />
coffin down the aisle, followed by<lb />
Karol's family.<lb />
"Learn from the loss of this<lb />
young man how precious life is<lb />
said the Rev. John Morley, a Seton<lb />
Hall priest. "And it does not come<lb />
with guarantees<lb />
In Vineland, about 500 people<lb />
including three bus loads of Se-<lb />
ton Hall students turned out for<lb />
Giunta's funeral Mass at St. Francis<lb />
of Assisi Roman Catholic Church.<lb />
Giunta, an elementary educa-<lb />

Gonzalez's grandmothers leave Miami without seeing him<lb />
MIAMI (AP)Elian Gonzalez's<lb />
grandmothers flew to Miami on<lb />
Monday in hopes of meeting with<lb />
their 6-year-old grandson before<lb />
they returned to Cuba, but the<lb />
women left town without seeing the<lb />
boy because of a dispute over the<lb />
site of the get-together.<lb />
The boy's maternal grand-<lb />
mother, Raquel Rodriguez, and pa-<lb />
ternal grandmother, Mariela<lb />
Quintana, shunned an invitation to<lb />
have dinner Monday night at the<lb />
home of Elian's relatives in Miami,<lb />
who insisted the meeting take place<lb />
there.<lb />
The grandmothers wanted to<lb />
meet privately with Elian at a neu-<lb />
tral site. After flying in from New<lb />
York, they spent about five hours at<lb />
the airport before departing for<lb />
Washington.<lb />
The two women arrived late<lb />
Monday in Washington where they<lb />
were scheduled to meet Tuesday<lb />
with several members of Congress.<lb />
The private Lear jet was met on the<lb />
Washington airport tarmac and the<lb />
two women were whisked away in<lb />
cars.<lb />
The grandmothers left Miami<lb />
while a group including Elian's two<lb />
great-uncles and Ms. Rodriguez's sis-<lb />
ter were heading to meet the<lb />
women at the airport. They did not<lb />
bring Elian along, and Spencer Eig,<lb />
an attorney for the Miami relatives,<lb />
said they were told the grandmoth-<lb />
ers had no interest in meeting with<lb />
the great-uncles.<lb />
"Elian is disappointed Fig said.<lb />
"I know the grandmothers are dis-<lb />
appointed. The situation is heart-<lb />
breaking for the Gonzalezes<lb />
The Reverend Hob Edgar, general<lb />
secretary of the National Council of<lb />
Churches, who sponsored the<lb />
women's trip, said the grandmoth-<lb />
ers were scared to come to Miami<lb />
because of protests by Cuban-<lb />
Americans who want Elian to stay<lb />
in the United States.<lb />
"They were frightened F.dgar<lb />
said. "They see the thousands of<lb />
people here in Miami marching and<lb />
protesting and you can imagine as<lb />
very simple, loving, caring grand-<lb />
parents that they would be fright-<lb />
ened to come<lb />
Edgar said the women were will-<lb />
ing to return to Miami, or go any-<lb />
where else, to meet with Elian as<lb />
long as there is agreement on a neu-<lb />
tral location for a visit.<lb />
The Miami relatives have been<lb />
caring for Elian since he was found<lb />
clinging to an inner tube off the<lb />
Florida coast on Nov. 25. His mother<lb />
and 10 other Cubans died in their<lb />
ill-fated attempt to reach the United<lb />
States.<lb />
The Immigration and Natural-<lb />
University of Alabama told<lb />
to suspend use of humans in research<lb />
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)Alabama's largest medi-<lb />
cal center has been ordered to stop enrolling human<lb />
volunteers in hundreds of federally-funded studies af-<lb />
ter a government citing potential safety concerns<lb />
among the test subjects.<lb />
University of Alabama at Birmingham officials said<lb />
Friday that about 25 percent of its 2,220 research<lb />
projects including those on AIDS and cancer could<lb />
be temporarily affected.<lb />
The order, made public by the university, was is-<lb />
sued this week by the National Institutes of Health's<lb />
Office for Protection from Research Risks, which over-<lb />
sees patient safety procedures at federally funded insti-<lb />
tutions.<lb />
The order made no mention of any harm to research<lb />
volunteers, and it was unclear how long admissions to<lb />
the programs would be baited.<lb />
Last year, a similar moratorium at Duke University's<lb />
medical center lasted four days.<lb />
The NIH office found flaws in UAH's internal over-<lb />
sight of its research projects involving human subjects,<lb />
including failure to adequately review patient risks and<lb />
insufficient tracking of research participants lor follow-<lb />
up information.<lb />
Calls to NTH officials were not returned Friday.<lb />
"The NTH order means new patients cannot enroll<lb />
in about 40 AIDS research programs that already in-<lb />
volve as many as 150 people said Dr. Michael Saag,<lb />
head of UAB's outpatient AIDS clinic. "People already<lb />
involved in studies will continue with the tfiafs Saag<lb />
said.<lb />
"This is a serious issue, and the university is ad-<lb />
dressing it very seriously and thoroughly Saag said.<lb />
The university said the order meant some research<lb />
projects must be reviewed again by its internal watch-<lb />
dog panel, known as the Institutional Review Board.<lb />
"Many of these items had already been addressed<lb />
at UAB and were in the process of being implemented<lb />
said Dr. Joan I.orden, the university's associate provost<lb />
for research.<lb />
At least six other research institutions have under-<lb />
gone similar moratoriums since 1998.<lb />
. Federal regulators restricted research at Duke for four<lb />
days last May because the school didn't meet the agency<lb />
time line for making changes after an inspection.<lb />
UAH said that, unlike other schools that have been<lb />
placed under tighter restrictions, it can continue ap-<lb />
proving new research projects. In addition to AIDS and<lb />
cancer, the university has major centers for treating<lb />
and researching heart disease, kidney ailments and eye<lb />
injuries and disorders.<lb />
The federal action had no immediate effect on pri-<lb />
vately funded research.<lb />
The university, with an enrollment of 15,000 stu-<lb />
dents, receives about 5300 million in research grants<lb />
each year, an amount higher than the total given to all<lb />
other Alabama universities combined. Of that, about<lb />
5212 million is from federal sources.<lb />

Student rebel leaders identified among 10 killed in hostage siege<lb />
RATCHABURI, Thailand (AP) Thailand displayed<lb />
the bodies Tuesday of 10 Myanmar insurgents killed<lb />
during a pre-dawn hostage rescue operation to free<lb />
hundreds of patients, visitors and medical staff trapped<lb />
in the takeover of a provincial hospital.<lb />
Two of them were identified as leaders of a tiny<lb />
group of exiled students opposed to their country's<lb />
military regime. They had stormed Myanmar's embassy<lb />
in Bangkok in October and were allowed to escape in<lb />
exchange for freeing dozens of hostages they held for<lb />
26 hours.<lb />
This time, Thai authorities took a hard line, saying<lb />
they could not play for time with the lives of hospital<lb />
patients at stake.<lb />
No civilians were injured in the pre-dawn, hour-<lb />
long assault by police coniniandos and army special<lb />
forces Tuesday, ending a 22-hour stalemate, live po-<lb />
licemen officers were wounded.<lb />
Prime Minister Chuan I.eekpai said the rescue op-<lb />
eration had been carefully planned and was "very suc-<lb />
cessful freeing all the hostages.<lb />
But the public display of the bodies seemed an at-<lb />
tempt to forestall speculation of summary executions.<lb />
Thai police have occasionally killed violent criminals<lb />
in cold blood after their capture.<lb />
The corpses were wrapped in white sheets, so the<lb />
nature of their wounds could not be discerned. At least<lb />
six seemed to be bleeding from their heads.<lb />
The regional police commander, I.t. Gen. Anant<lb />
Heamathanong, said all the hostage-takers had died in<lb />
fighting and none had been executed. He said nine<lb />
were killed at the scene and the 10th in a gun battle<lb />
after fleeing. No other details were given.<lb />
The bodies were taken by ambulance to a Buddhist<lb />
temple, leaving bloodstains on the concrete where they<lb />
had lain.<lb />
The takeover has been blamed on a fringe rebel<lb />
group of the Karen minority.called God's Army, led by<lb />
12-year-old twins believed to have magical powers, and<lb />
it may have supplied some of the manpower.<lb />
But it became clear that a major, and probably com-<lb />
manding, role was played by the Vigorous Burmese Stu-<lb />
dent Warriors, which had holed up with God's Army<lb />
in the Myanmar-Thai border jungles.<lb />
presents<lb />
Big Mac<lb />
Five of the students seized Myanmar's embassy in<lb />
Bangkok in October, holding dozens of hostages. They<lb />
were allowed to fly to freedom in Thai helicopters in<lb />
exchange for releasing them, angering Myanmar's gov-<lb />
ernment for what it viewed as Thai coddling of terror-<lb />
ists. Myanmar closed the border for two months in re-<lb />
taliation.<lb />
Spokesmen for the foreign and defense ministries<lb />
identified two of the dead as members of the Vigorous<lb />
Burmese Student Warriors known only as johnny and<lb />
Preeda, the best-known of the group. Others may also<lb />
have been members.<lb />
One official who took part in the raid, speaking on<lb />
condition of anonymity, said he estimated the dead<lb />
gunmen ranged in age from their early teens to early<lb />
30s. A full identification was not given.<lb />
The twin leaders of God's Army, Johnny and I.uther<lb />
Htoo, were not among them and played no apparent<lb />
role in the takeover.<lb />
The God's Army base in Myanmar came under at-<lb />
tack from government forces last week, sending 1,000<lb />
civilian refugees to Thailand. The Thais meanwhile<lb />
shelled the rebels to keep them from coming as well.<lb />
In their demands Monday, the rebels sought an end<lb />
to the Thai shelling and refuge for civilians and fight-<lb />
ers inside Thailand. They also wanted helicopters tp<lb />
escape.<lb />
An estimated 900 people had been trapped when<lb />
the gunmen seized the hospital Monday morning. But<lb />
at least half of them had been freed by their captors or<lb />
escaped during the day and overnight before the as-<lb />
sault was launched.<lb />
Thai authorities said throughout the ordeal that<lb />
they were trying to negotiate a peaceful end to the siege.<lb />
But at about 5:40 a.m police and soldiers armed<lb />
with M-16 assault rifles ran on foot or sped in trucks<lb />
and jeeps into the walled, 2.4-hectare (six-acre) hospi-<lb />
tal compound.<lb />
Reporters kept away from the hospital could hear<lb />
explosions, possibly mines and explosives rigged by the<lb />
hostage-takers, and automatic weapons fire, which con-<lb />
tinued sporadically for an hour.<lb />
Freed hostages on Tuesday recalled their ordeal,<lb />
some complimenting their captors, other condemning<lb />
them.<lb />
Decha Yuwang, 32, a laborer, was taken prisoner<lb />
with his mother who had come for treatment for a sore<lb />
throat. The gunmen guarding them in a small room<lb />
with 80-90 other captives assured they would come to<lb />
no harm.<lb />
"They spoke to us very politely said Decha. "I ad-<lb />
mire their bravery<lb />
Kheak Im-uerb, 35, was recovering from an appen-<lb />
dectomy when the gunmen arrived. He and other post-<lb />
operative patients escaped halfway through the siege,<lb />
since the small number of gunmen were unable to con-<lb />
trol all the hospital's outlying buildings.<lb />
"A doctor told us to go if we could Kheak said.<lb />
"He said, 'We can always fix your stitches again if they<lb />

OURVIEW<lb />
The Student Recreation Center is celebrating its third anniversary this<lb />
month. The SRC stands as an example of what a university can do when it<lb />
focuses on the students. While many university facilities have solely aca-<lb />
demic uses, the SRC caters exclusively to the needs of the student body.<lb />
While the many exercise machines and basketball courts give students<lb />
a place to play and workout, the SRC also puts together trips, organizes<lb />
intramurals, and club sports and plans functions that enhance student life<lb />
at ECU.<lb />
The SRC runs programs such as A-Rise for students with disabilities<lb />
and has special programs for students at the beginning of each semester<lb />
and during exams.<lb />
Prospective students are immediately drawn to the SRC when visiting<lb />
the campus on tour. The SRC is head and shoulders above the student<lb />
recreation facilities at every other school in the state. It is a testament to<lb />
what can happen when a university puts serious thought into the lives of<lb />
its students and follows through with those plans.<lb />
That's what makes the SRC more than just a place to get in a quick<lb />
game of hoops.<lb />
On a trip to the SRC during the week, you will see honor students<lb />
playing alongside frat brothers, day students, freshmen and even the odd<lb />

OPINION WRITER<lb />
As we stand here at the crosswalk of freedom, wait-<lb />
ing to be mangled by the bus of Election 2000, Ameri-<lb />
pans must first choose the two main competitors to<lb />
compete in this topless mud-wrestling ring of democ-<lb />
racy.<lb />
On Monday, Iowa held a caucus to help find<lb />
tomorrow's presidential scandal, today. For those of<lb />
you who don't know, the word caucus sounds a lot<lb />
like the French word "causerie" meaning talk show.<lb />
Trust me folks, all this election needs is a crack-<lb />
addicted, transvestite prostitute or any member of the<lb />
midget KKK to have every possible type of candidate<lb />
running.<lb />
To make it easier for you, I will break down win-<lb />
ners and losers of each party.<lb />
From the Republican Party, George W. (Wonder<lb />
Woman) Bush, won his campaign in Iowa with a big<lb />
win over Steve Forbes. This Republican front- runner<lb />
is the son of former president, George Bush, who had<lb />
the highest American approval-rating in history dur-<lb />
ing his presidency.<lb />
However by the end of Flection '92, Bush's rating<lb />
mirrored that of O.J. Simpson playing golf with the<lb />
skeletal remains of his dead ex-wife.<lb />
Steve Forbes surprisingly won over 30 percent of<lb />
the Republican vote to come in second in the race.<lb />
Forbes was a little upset with this, and he blamed it on<lb />
an under-financed campaign.<lb />
So he went to the bank to take more money out of<lb />
his kids near-penniless trust fund in preparation for<lb />
another second place victory in New Hampshire.<lb />
I would say something about John McCain, but I<lb />
fear it'll rub him the wrong way, causing him to throw<lb />
a temper tantrum like a two-year-old in the toy section<lb />
of Wal-Mart.<lb />
On a lighter note, Orin Hatch, whose campaign slo-<lb />
gan "Don't mess with me, I'm from Utah quit after<lb />
obtaining just one percent of the 10 percent who voted<lb />
in Iowa. Leaving the American public holding their<lb />
hands to their mouths gasping, "Who?"<lb />
The political spectrum of the Democratic race can<lb />
be broken down like the mixture of the all-guy band<lb />
NSync. That is, a couple of "pretty boys" with good<lb />
voices, surrounded by a bunch of ugly, vapid, back-up<lb />
singers.<lb />
Running in first is Al Gore, who won (because he<lb />
was able to get nine out of 10 lumberjacks in'that state<lb />
to agree that he's top-grade.<lb />
By nearly two votes to one, Al Gore beat former<lb />
senator and NBA hall-of-famer Bill Bradley, proving<lb />
once again that the Knicks suck.<lb />
If your favorite candidate didn't win this time,<lb />
maybe he'll have better luck in New I lampshire. That's<lb />
the state that has the tough job of keeping all the<lb />
whinny French-Canadians from delecting to here.<lb />

Everyday, hundreds of students use the bus system<lb />
as transportation to and from class. For me, it is an<lb />
easy way to get to class without searching for a park-<lb />
ing spot. I can drive to Minges from my apartment<lb />
and then take the shuttle to Christenbury.<lb />
I am very thankful that this service is provided for<lb />
us. However, some things do not need to be discussed<lb />
on route to school. If you want to learn about your<lb />
fellow classmates, ride the bus. Anything and eyery-<lb />
thing is discussed.<lb />
I really have an issue, or shall I say pet peeve, with<lb />
this.<lb />
Monday morning there was a great romance story<lb />
being told, which appeared to be a replay of the<lb />
weekend's events. I can honestly say that I was sur-<lb />
prised by the level of details that I heard. Which for<lb />
me as a listener, really helped bring it to life.<lb />
I do, nevertheless, feel sorry for the girlfriend, es-<lb />
pecially since I know her.<lb />
I heard about these three people: the girlfriend, the<lb />
boyfriend and a close female friend. All three have been,<lb />
good friAids for several years, and always seem to be<lb />
together.<lb />
They had plans over the weekend, but unfortu-<lb />
nately the girlfriend had to go out of town, which left<lb />
the other two in Greenville to enjoy themselves. The<lb />
close friend decided to invite the boyfriend over for a<lb />
nice dinner and an evening by the fire, which led them<lb />
to cross that friendship line.<lb />
To make the story even better, the intimate details<lb />
such as the fact that the friend bought a green lingerie<lb />
set just for him, were actually revealed. Plus, I now<lb />
know even where in the apartment the actual relations<lb />
occurred.<lb />
After those two actions were presented, the girl-<lb />
friend was degraded by the two on the bus.<lb />
I do not want to hear this kind of stuff on my way<lb />
to class. For some reason I think that information like<lb />
this needs to be discussed elsewhere.<lb />
What if I am good friends with the actual people<lb />
(like I am) and decide to tell them what I heard?<lb />
If you have to talk smack, you better watch your<lb />
back and make sure who you tell these stories around.<lb />
More than that, have a little respect for those around<lb />
you. Some of us do not care who you had sex with or<lb />
what exactly it was that you did this weekend.<lb />
Which takes me to the bus ride back to Minges af-<lb />
ter school.<lb />
It was around 3 p.m which meant that most people<lb />
had already left campus and the bus was rather sparse.<lb />
This also means that little conversations can be heard<lb />
by everyone riding. This time there were two rather<lb />
nice looking guys discussing the tactics in luring a<lb />
young girl on a date, or least to have a drink with them.<lb />
For example, one of their procedures in capturing<lb />
"fresh meat" is to tell them how innocent they are.<lb />
The boy approached the girl, tells her that she does not<lb />
look like she feels comfortable in the surroundings and<lb />
to let him take her where she will be less vulnerable.<lb />
Another example from the boy's conversation was<lb />
to tell her that either there were a lot of drugs in the<lb />
bathroom and they needed to get out, or that a ran-<lb />
dom person has a gun and it would be wise for her to<lb />
let him take her out of the bar.<lb />
I found both of these approaches rather interest-<lb />
ing, f really hope that girls do not fall for these tactics.<lb />
I also hope that these two guys have better ways of<lb />
getting dates. Either way, I don't care.<lb />
There is a time and a place for everything. This<lb />
means that the shuttle is not the place for revealing<lb />
thoughts or events that might affect others riding.<lb />
In the future, I hope that you really will look to see<lb />
who is sitting next to you. You really never know when<lb />
you are getting yourself into trouble or you might find<lb />
your story in the newspaper.<lb />
I enjoy digging for information and writing about<lb />
it, but it is handed to me, as I was riding the shuttle),<lb />
there is no way that I can refuse.<lb />

OPINION COLUMNIST<lb />
In this hectic, day-to-day college life that we live<lb />
in, we sometimes forget the important people in our<lb />
life and their effect upon us. The friends we grew up<lb />
with that now go to another school, the really sweet<lb />
teacher that got you out of trouble, the parents that<lb />
helped raise you into the man or woman you are to-<lb />
dayall of these people played an integral part in who<lb />
you are today.<lb />
These people are special to you and they don't even<lb />
know it.Tell them how much they mean to you and<lb />
lww they touched your soul. A simple letter or phone<lb />
call is sometimes all that is needed. How many times<lb />
have you heard someone who lost a loved one say "I<lb />
never had the chance to tell them how much I really<lb />
cared It tears my heart to pieces when I hear this be-<lb />
cause I was once in the same boat as they are now in.<lb />
Travis Cobb Ellis was one of my best friends in high<lb />
school. We were both on the golf team and we both<lb />
hung out together on the weekends. Some of my most<lb />
memorable high school moments were spent with him<lb />
.and our other friends. I eventually went off to school<lb />
while Travis looked for something to do after high<lb />
school. The last time I saw him was on a golf course at<lb />
the end of July in 1998. We got into a big argument<lb />
that resulted in me walking off the course and vowing<lb />
to tear him a new one. I hung around to wait for him<lb />
but decided to go home instead. That was the last time<lb />
I spoke with him until his funeral four months later.<lb />
Travis was hit by a car that ran off the road Oct. 2,<lb />
1998 while working with the Department of Transpor-<lb />
tation spraying flowers on the roadside. My whole life<lb />
went to pieces after his death because I believed he<lb />
didn't know how much I really cared for him as my<lb />
friend. He was my boy and I let him die without ever<lb />
letting him know. After his death, it became important<lb />
to me to tell each and every person I'm friends with<lb />
how I feel about them. I tell my friends I love them, I<lb />
tell my parents I love them after every phone call, I tell<lb />
anyone I can that I love them because when it is all<lb />
said and done, I do not want these people to have to go<lb />
through what I did.<lb />
Fell your parents you love them. You may not get<lb />
along too well with them but it is important for them<lb />
to hear it. You'll brighten their day. It is a simple ges-<lb />
ture that can greatly ease the pain if the person is taken<lb />
from you. Some people may say that I'm unlucky be-<lb />
cause so many of my friends have died, but I look at it<lb />
differently. The Lord is trying to show me how pre-<lb />
cious each and every life is, so take nothing for granted.<lb />
No matter what, when God decides to return you to<lb />
his side, there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. Life<lb />
is short. Take nothing for granted. Open yourselves to<lb />
others.<lb />

All this snow is wonderful. It reminds me of a Rob-<lb />
ert Frost poem about the pastoral settings of the North<lb />
with the crisp air and the splendid mountain ranges.<lb />
Or does this snow remind me of a Edgar Allen Poe poem<lb />
about death and dismemberment? Looking at the car<lb />
wreck I just saw, it had to be Poe.<lb />
I grew up in the North and 1 remember I had to dig<lb />
my father's car out of five feet of snow just so I could<lb />
go to the DMV to take my driving test. I failed the test,<lb />
but it was not because of the snow, it was because I<lb />
had the radio on and my arm out the window. But<lb />
anyway, I have been driving in snow as long as 1 can<lb />
remember and I don't mind it at all. 1 like driving to<lb />
school on a sheet of icesideways. Having it snow<lb />
down here in the South provides me no end of enter-<lb />
tainment. It is a gas to watch everyone walking like<lb />
they are on a tight rope connected to two unicycles<lb />
while wearing stiletto heels. Arms flailing about and<lb />
legs wobbling. It looks like downtown at 2:30 am. See-<lb />
ing cars on the side of the road gives me a snicker be-<lb />
cause that is one less person that can get my illegal<lb />
parking spot at Darryl's. 1 know that is evil of me, but<lb />
so is the parking situation, and desperate needs cause<lb />
for desperate deeds.<lb />
Another thing 1 like watch in the snow is the ex-<lb />
pression on the faces of all the students who are slid-<lb />
ing around the campus. They have a look of money in<lb />
their eyes. They are waiting to fall and break their hips<lb />
just so their lawyers can get them a fat settlement and<lb />
have a building named after them. 1 am not sure which<lb />
building I will buy when I fall, but the new chemistry<lb />
building will look good with a statue of me in front of<lb />
it.<lb />
But all seriousness aside, now it is time for fun.<lb />
There is so much fun to'be had in the snow. And re-<lb />
member the first rule of fun in the snow: the more<lb />
dangerous it is, the more fun it is. Tying an old<lb />
Volkswagen Beetle's hood to the back of your buddy's<lb />
truck and being hauled around the neighborhood at'<lb />
forty miles an hour is always fun. Taking a canoe down!<lb />
the hill on 4th st. is also fun. (It will be even more furi!<lb />
if there are eleven other drunk people in there with!<lb />
you.) i!<lb />
And what about the snowballs! What fun to be had<lb />
Throwing snowballs at cars as they go by has been!<lb />
around since snow was first invented. It is pure bliss to!<lb />
watch the people scowl as you pelt their windows with!<lb />
snowballs the size of grapefruits, knowing they will,<lb />
never catch you when they do stop and chase you<lb />
Snowball fights are another great time, but remember<lb />
putting old batteries in the center of the snowball is'<lb />
unfair and should only be used if your side is losing the<lb />
battle. <lb />
And who can forget the old favoriteSkitching<lb />
Now skitching is done by waiting for a car to stop at a j<lb />
stoplight or stop sign and sneaking up behind it, grab-<lb />
bing the bumper and getting pulled for a block or two<lb />
Make sure to wear heavy boots and gloves and a;<lb />
catcher's mask doesn't hurt either. But make sure the'<lb />
car you choose can handle it. This is a true story in'<lb />
Buffalo, NY where I skitched for years, my buddy and <lb />
grabbed the bumper of aYugo. The bumper actually<lb />
ripped off and we almost got killed by the car behind !<lb />
us. So choose a sturdy car like a Ford Festiva or a Ged!<lb />
Metro. ;<lb />
So enjoy the snow, drive to school fast, do donuts<lb />
wherever you can and make sure to have a good law-<lb />
yer. Dress warm and remember which bars stay open<lb />
in the foul weather. And if school does close, make sure<lb />
that whatever you do, don't catch up on work and study<lb />
It belittles the school's grand gesture of looking out for'<lb />
your safety. Go out and have some fun and make some<lb />
money<lb />

FEATURES BRIEFS<lb />
The many<lb />
meanings of color<lb />
RED has the lowest<lb />
vibration, being therefore the<lb />
coarsest and most physically<lb />
vitalizing. Astrologers tell us<lb />
that the "planetary<lb />
color " of Mars is<lb />
red and has<lb />
dynamic power<lb />
over iron, which is<lb />
responsible for our<lb />
red-blood. Without it we<lb />
would have transparent liquid<lb />
in our veins. Mars is consid-<lb />
ered the God of War, giving a<lb />
martial spirit to all born under<lb />
this sign, quick strength and<lb />
force, power and leadership.<lb />
Red is the color of Mars, whose<lb />
stone is the ruby and whose<lb />
metal is iron.<lb />
ORANGE is the second<lb />
color in the spectrum. This<lb />
I beautiful color is<lb />
associated with the<lb />
sun, and has a<lb />
I warming and<lb />
invigorating effect. But<lb />
whereas red is stimulating to<lb />
the body and the blood,<lb />
orange is stimulating to the<lb />
emotions. It is also considered<lb />
the color of the brave. It<lb />
should be avoided by ex-<lb />
tremely emotional types of<lb />
people, who acquire balance<lb />
through its complimentary<lb />
color, blue.<lb />
YELLOW is the third color<lb />
of the spectrum. This color<lb />
belongs to the planet Mercury.<lb />
Mercury instills a<lb />
quick intellect by<lb />
stimulating the<lb />
nervous system.<lb />
Wisdom is said to<lb />
be conferred by<lb />
Mercury and its color. This<lb />
color has stood for wisdom<lb />
and intellect throughout the<lb />
ages. Yellow lamps or glass<lb />
windows stimulate the nerves<lb />
of the brain and the body.<lb />
They should not be used by<lb />
highly nervous subjects.<lb />
GREEN is the fourth color<lb />
which stands in the center of<lb />
the scale of seven colors.<lb />
Green gives stability, endur-<lb />
ance and quietude. People<lb />
with the luminous .<lb />
I green of Saturn in<lb />
their aura are the<lb />
harmonizers and<lb />
pacifiers of the<lb />
world. They stand<lb />
for social stability. If<lb />
the green is dark and crude it<lb />
tells that its owner, so con-<lb />
cerned with the affairs of<lb />
others, has become "green<lb />
with envy<lb />
BLUE belongs to the planet<lb />
Venus, the giver of love,<lb />
devotion and harmony. Its<lb />
stone is the amethyst, the<lb />
super-sacred of the seven<lb />
jewels. Pale blue in the aura<lb />
represents devotion, while<lb />
dark blue shows fanaticism.<lb />
One can either be "true blue"<lb />
or have a fit of the "blues<lb />
according to one's outlook.<lb />
INDIGO is the sixth color<lb />
of the scale. It is, like green, a<lb />
meeting-ground for all the<lb />
colors. Its planet is said to be<lb />
Uranus and its stone is jet. In<lb />
the aura it shows dignity and<lb />
high aspirations.<lb />
VIOLET is the seventh and<lb />
last color of the spectrum. It<lb />
represents the seventh and<lb />
highest quality a<lb />
person attains <lb />
noble spiritual<lb />
aspiration. There-<lb />
'1t fre it has always<lb />
been connected to<lb />
the priestly ceremo-<lb />
nies. It cools the nerves, is<lb />
magnetic and antiseptic.<lb />
Purple and violet speak of<lb />
honor, spirituality and self-<lb />
esteem.<lb />

FEATURES ASSISTANT EDITOR<lb />
The Emerald City got a<lb />
taste of what it's like to be in<lb />
a a world of snowy white when<lb />
flakesfell on Tuesday.<lb />
Although meteorologists<lb />
reporting flurries for early<lb />
Tuesday morning, not many<lb />
people in this area were ready<lb />
for what we actually re-<lb />
ceivednorthwest winds<lb />
gusting between 15-25 mph,<lb />
temperatures in the upper-<lb />
30s, not to mention the four<lb />
to six inches of snowfall.<lb />
According to WITN-7<lb />
Meteorologist Marvin<lb />
Daugherty, he has not seen<lb />
snow hit eastern North<lb />
Carolina like this for about<lb />
20-25 years. - <lb />
But since it did come<lb />
down and classes were<lb />
canceled, ECU students did<lb />
not waste one minute In<lb />
getting outside and playing in<lb />
the wintry weather.<lb />
One of the more popular<lb />
sites this Tuesday was the hill<lb />
located on 5th Street, where<lb />
it.<lb />
borrowed one of my friend's sled<lb />
and had a great time sledding<lb />
said senior Kiersten Hansen.<lb />
Whether it be through making<lb />
snowmen or pelting passers-by<lb />
with snow balls, campus became<lb />
a giant playground as students<lb />
put their creativity and mischief<lb />
to work.<lb />
"My friends and 1 participated<lb />
in a massive snowball fight, did<lb />
some recreational driving trdund<lb />
the area and tried to avoid any<lb />
drive-by slusliings said<lb />
Mckenzie Thompson, a speech<lb />
and pathology graduate student.<lb />
"People were trying to do<lb />
drive-by snowball throwings<lb />
said senior Lissa Griffin. "Unfor-<lb />
tunately it backfired because as<lb />
the guy threw the snowball, he<lb />
fell out of the back of the truck<lb />
"My friends and I have been<lb />
trying to build a really big<lb />
snowman said freshman Leo<lb />
Nieves. "We have been rolling<lb />
this ball of snow for about an<lb />
hour<lb />
Many people were happy to<lb />
see the snow fall and have it<lb />
stick.<lb />

ASSISTANT FEATURES EDITOR<lb />
Tuesday was definitely one for<lb />
the record books. It was nice to<lb />
see students come together for<lb />
snowball fights, creating<lb />
snowmen and skiing down the<lb />
5th Street slope on sleds, garbage<lb />
can lids and Mendenhall cafeteria<lb />
trays.<lb />
But, it wasn't nice to find out that<lb />
my Adidas Vindicators were not a<lb />
suitable source of footwear. It may have<lb />
been better to wear a sturdy pair of ice<lb />
skates for the hike to class on Wednes-<lb />
day morning. Don't get me wrongI<lb />
appreciate the administrative higher-ups<lb />
for canceling morning classes for those<lb />
who had to drive on the slick roads, but<lb />
how about us poor pedestrians?<lb />
If s a fact that eastern North<lb />
Carolina isn't used to getting this<lb />
amount of snow, but let's get on the<lb />
ball, people. Most of the main walk-<lb />
ways on this campus were covered by a<lb />
complete sheet of ice. What used<lb />
to be a five-mmute walk to the<lb />
General Classroom Building took<lb />
an extra five just to make it to class<lb />
without slipping and falling.<lb />
The fact that many students'<lb />
classes were canceled after endur-<lb />
ing the physically challenging hike<lb />
to their classroom building just<lb />
added to the frustrations of the<lb />
day. It's times like these that I want<lb />
class to be heldespecially if I<lb />
went through all the trouble to risk<lb />
my life (and my humility) to get<lb />
there. I mean, really, what's worse:<lb />
falling on the ice and injuring<lb />
yourself or falling on the ice and<lb />
injuring your ego as people look<lb />
down at you, suppressing their<lb />
laughter.<lb />
Yesterday would have been the<lb />
prime moment for ECU maintenance to<lb />
clear some of these paths, you know,<lb />
before the snow turned into ice. Now I<lb />
should give credit wherecredit's due<lb />
since I did see some people clearing<lb />
some of the areas. But some of the main<lb />
walkways looked untouched. And, no,<lb />
throwing sand and dirt on top of the ice<lb />
will not make it all better.<lb />
Last time I checked, when it snows,<lb />
thecity puts down salt rocks to melt the<lb />
ice and prevent slippage. The dirt<lb />
and sand stuff only makes what<lb />
was left of the snow slushy dirt<lb />
covered the ice, and really did <lb />
nothing to help pedestrians. It<lb />
stuck to our shoes, leaving<lb />
attractive dirt prints wherever we<lb />
went. Let's learn a lesson from<lb />
the Northeastern statesI don't<lb />
recall ever seeing them use sand!<lb />
Oh yeah, I do want to thank those<lb />
who cleared the road for those driving<lb />
around campus. You guys did a<lb />
fantastic job in removing the ice and<lb />
snow, but did you have to place it<lb />
directly in the gutter areas? I have a<lb />
theory as to what you were thinking:<lb />
pushing the snow into the far comers<lb />
of the road will clear the area for<lb />
drivers and when it finally melts, it will<lb />
go right into thedrains.<lb />
Well, that's great, but it was only<lb />
supposed to get up to40degreeson<lb />
Wednesday. That's only a mere eight<lb />
degrees above freezing. So it took<lb />
leaps and bounds to make it from the<lb />
street to the sidewalks, again endanger-<lb />
ing ourselves to make a wrong step,<lb />
slip and fall at the expense of being the<lb />
joke of all of those who are within<lb />
viewing distance.<lb />
Although it was an eventful snow<lb />
day, we aredefinitelynot as prepared<lb />
as we could be for the consequences<lb />
once the fun is over.<lb />

Dear Majorie,<lb />
My roommate hangs his<lb />
underwear on the door every<lb />
night. He says that he hangs<lb />
them up so that they can air<lb />
out. He then wears them the<lb />
next day. Is this sanitary?<lb />
Grossed out in Garrett<lb />
Dear Grossed out,<lb />
This has got to be one of the<lb />
more disgusting dorm tales that<lb />
I have heard. First of all, what if<lb />
you get a late-night visitor, do<lb />
you really want him or her to<lb />
see the funky drawers? No, I<lb />
didn't think so. Secondly, we<lb />
should all worry about our<lb />
roommates, and it is in his best<lb />
interests to wear clean drawers<lb />
at all times. What if he was to<lb />
go home with a hotUe, and they<lb />
started getting hot and heavy.<lb />
Rest assured, he wouldn't get<lb />
any if she saw nasty skids. For<lb />
everyone concerned, clean<lb />
drawers are a must. Jeans last for<lb />
three days, shirts indefinitely if<lb />
you wear something under<lb />
them, but drawers are a one-day<lb />
thing.<lb />
Dear Majorie,<lb />
My freshman roommate gets<lb />
up at 5:30 a.m. every morning<lb />
to get ready for her 8 a.m.<lb />
college algebra class. Her<lb />
4<lb />
makeup case is the size of a 10-<lb />
gallon aquarium, and she has<lb />
more shoes than I have cans of<lb />
Spaghetti-O's. Is this a freshman<lb />
female phenomenon, or is it just<lb />
her?<lb />
Concerned in Clement<lb />
Dear Concerned,<lb />
This is a phenomenon that we<lb />
have seen in many freshman<lb />
females on campus. Possibly<lb />
because there is a 3-1 ratio of girls<lb />
to guys on campus or because this<lb />
is their first chance to snag a real<lb />
college guy, we're not sure. Ladies,<lb />
at 8 a.m. the men aren't Hungry<lb />
for love, they are thinking about<lb />
the fact that the sun shouldn't rise<lb />
so early or about how many<lb />
aspirins are medically safe to take<lb />
at one time for the hangover<lb />
that's pounding their brain.<lb />
With the money that your<lb />
roommate spends on make-up in<lb />
a month, the rest of us could<lb />
probably feed a small country.<lb />
Natural beauty is a blessing, but<lb />
plaster is disgusting. If you must<lb />
wear make-up and you must be<lb />
beautiful at 8 a.m know that you<lb />
will be one of a select few and that<lb />
everyone will identify you as an<lb />
overly eager freshman.<lb />

BARRE, Vt. (AP)A judge has dismissed criminal<lb />
charges against a Montpelier man who was accused of<lb />
violating a city ordinance by letting his chickens roam.<lb />
Judge Mark Keller recently dismissed a misdemeanor<lb />
case against Gary Schy without a hearing in Vermont<lb />
District Court after notifying both sides that he in-<lb />
tended to so unless they objected.<lb />
Schy, a 41-year-old day care operator, was charged<lb />
in August under a city ordinance that makes it a crime<lb />
to have chickens escape from their enclosure.<lb />
Court documents said a neighbor, Bernard Folta,<lb />
57, complained to police about Schy's chickens escap-<lb />
ing in July and even provided Montpelier police with<lb />
photos that depicted the chickens off Schy's property.<lb />
Folta told police he had been complaining to Schy<lb />
about the chickens escaping since the summer of 1998,<lb />
and had filed a complaint previously.<lb />
Schy was charged in August 1998 with "failure to<lb />
contain chicken according to court records. He said<lb />
the charges were dropped after he agreed to make a<lb />
donation to the city.<lb />
When the latest charges were filed, Schy could have<lb />
faced a $250 fine and up to 30 days in prison if con-<lb />
victed. City attorney Glenn Howland had said he was<lb />
only seeking the fine.<lb />
In September, Keller put the case on hold for 90<lb />
days to give the two sides a chance to work out a solu-<lb />
tion through the Corrections Department's Court and<lb />
Reparatiye Service program.<lb />
Schy sajd Monday Howland had filed a motion ask-<lb />
ing the charges be reinstated. Howland did not return<lb />
calls seeking comment.<lb />

A local band's show is typically more than just<lb />
the music and making money selling CDs. The<lb />
audience is incorporated into the show, and the band<lb />
follows the audience and feels the mood of the night.<lb />
"For someone performing for 500 people, there is<lb />

"You get a better sense of what the band is really<lb />
about. The band tends to react more to the crowd<lb />

Thomas has surgery<lb />
Chiefs linebacker had surgery Tuesday to treat<lb />
the serious back injury he suffered in a car accident<lb />
Sunday. The 4 12 hour surgery was performed in<lb />
Thomas' home town of Miami by the renowned back<lb />
specialists at the Miami Project. Thomas regained<lb />
some feeling in his feet but, is still paralyzed below<lb />
the waist. Doctors are undecided as to whether or not<lb />
Thomas will walk again.<lb />
"Anybody who knows Derrick Thomas knows not<lb />

Medical Center. "But it's too early to tell right now<lb />

After weeks of running on grass and wondering<lb />
when their new track would be complete, ECU men's<lb />
and women's track teams finally got to run for real<lb />
this weekend, at the Pepsi One Invitational.<lb />
The meet on the campus of Virginia Tech in<lb />
Blacksburg, V.A featured stiff competition for the Pi-<lb />
rates. "It was a pretty big meet said Head Women's<lb />
Track Coach Matt Munson. "We chose to open a little<lb />
later because of what we had been through with the<lb />
track. But this was a big meet. We were up against teams<lb />
like Penn State, Carolina and Florida State<lb />
The meet was bigger than most season openers for<lb />
past ECU teams.<lb />
"I prefer a smaller meet said thrower Crystal Frye.<lb />
"But you don't want to be babied<lb />
Both teams rose to the occasion. The men posted<lb />
the third fastest collegiate time this year in the 4x400<lb />
meter relay. Three runners qualified for the IC4A's in<lb />
the 400m. The women had three athletes qualify for<lb />
the prestigious ECAC Indoor Championships.<lb />
Junior Rasheca Barrow posted two ECAC qualify-<lb />
ing times. On Friday Barrow qualified with a time of<lb />
7.61 in the preliminaries of the 60 meters. The Win-<lb />
ston-Salem native then notched another ECAC quali-<lb />
fying time in the 200 meters on Saturday. Barrow placed<lb />
sixth with a time of 24.94.<lb />
In addition to Barrow, thrower Crystal Frye earned<lb />
a bid to the ECAC in the shot put with a personal best<lb />
throw of 44' 6 34<lb />
"The competition in this meet is always fierce Frye<lb />
said. "There are of course the collegiate competitors and<lb />
also competitors that are no longer in college<lb />
Also qualifying for the ECAC meet was freshman,<lb />
Becky Post. Post tied for seventh in the pole vault. She<lb />
is the first pole vaulter in ECU history, thus her first<lb />
vault of 10' 6 was a school record in addition to a<lb />
personal best.<lb />
Her vault qualified her for the ECAC and brought<lb />
the total number of qualifiers to four in only the first<lb />
meet of the season.<lb />
"1 did really put that on the kids Munson said I<lb />
told them to go for it this week. For the kids who quali-<lb />
fied, it's out of the way and they don't have to worry<lb />
about it<lb />
For the ECU men's team the 4x400 meter relay team<lb />
picked up where they left off last season. In their first<lb />
meet they qualified for the IC4A Championships, and<lb />
turned in the third fastest time run by a college team<lb />
this year, behind Florida State and Georgia Tech.<lb />
"If we'd have run smart, we would have beaten<lb />
Georgia Tech said Head Men's Track Coach Bill<lb />
Carson.<lb />
The team ran with a reorganized lineup.<lb />
"I just wanted to try different people out at differ-<lb />
ent spots Carson said.<lb />
Three of the 400 meter runners qualified for the<lb />
IC4A's. Senior Damon Davis finished fifth in the 400<lb />
meters with a time of 47.97. Freshman Lawrence Ward<lb />
finished eighth at 48.40 while Darrick Ingram placed<lb />
ninth in 48.42.<lb />
ECU placed two people in the top 30 in the 800<lb />
meters. Freshman I'rankie Green placed 20th with a<lb />
time of 1:56.80, and teammate Brian Beil came in 28th<lb />
at 1:57.45.<lb />

Titans, Rams cut through Super Bowl hype<lb />
ATLANTA (AP)Roland Williams had a tinge of<lb />
disbelief in his voice.<lb />
"Everything seems different the St. Louis Rams<lb />
tight end said Tuesday. "My hotel room seems differ-<lb />
ent. The sheets on my bed seem different. Even the<lb />
water tastes different<lb />
So, this is what it's like to play in your first Super<lb />
Bowl.<lb />
"I can't believe it Titans receiver Chris Sanders<lb />
said, video camera in hand as hundreds of reporters<lb />
milled about at that annual phenomenon known as<lb />
media day. "Look at me. I can't stop smiling<lb />
The Rams aren't really playing in their first Super<lb />
Bowl, but they might as well be. Their only previous<lb />
appearance came in 1980, when they were still in Los<lb />
Angeles and St. Louis belonged to the football Cardi-<lb />
nals.<lb />
The Titans are neophytes, playing in their first Su-<lb />
per Bowl as Tennessee's team or their previous incar-<lb />
nation as the Houston Oilers.<lb />
"I've never seen this much media Sanders said.<lb />
"I'm taping every-<lb />
thing<lb />
But, with memo-<lb />
ries of the Atlanta Fal-<lb />
cons still fresh on their<lb />
minds, both the Rams<lb />
and Titans declared a<lb />
moratorium on any-<lb />
thing that might be<lb />
construed as contro-<lb />
versial.<lb />
No dog collars. No<lb />
insults. No guaranteed victories.<lb />
"We want to be careful in what we say and what we<lb />
do Tennessee receiver Derrick Mason said. "We don't<lb />
want to say anything about the Rams that might get<lb />
them motivated<lb />
Not even an appearance by Mr. Dog Collar himself,<lb />
Falcons cornerhack Ray Buchanan, could produce the<lb />
slightest of trash talk at the Georgia Dome.<lb />
A year ago, Buchanan first guaranteed a victory over<lb />
the Denver Broncos, then arrived for interviews wear'<lb />
ing silver-studded neckwear as a way of dramatizing<lb />
his team's underdog role. <lb />
Instead of being motivated, the Falcons suffered a<lb />
major meltdown, losing 34-19.<lb />
"We're not going to do stuff like that Williams<lb />
said. "We're going first class to get the job done. We<lb />
respect our fine opponent, the Tennessee Titans?'<lb />
Not the kind of talk you'd get from Deion Sanders<lb />
or Jim McMahon. Then again, this game just doesn'(<lb />
have the star power of past Super Bowls.<lb />
Many reporters kept glancing at the one-page ros-<lb />
ters that were handed out at the Georgia Dome, trying<lb />
to figure out who they were talking to.<lb />
No. 77. Who's that?<lb />
Long before each team exhausted its one-hour ses<lb />
sion, the crowd in front of most podiums went from<lb />
thick to thin. Soon, reporters were interviewing .each'<lb />
other, pointing microphones toward players-tuaied<lb />
commentators like Joe Theismann, Jim Kelly and Ror(<lb />

OPINION COLUMN<lb />
The true meaning of Super Bowl Sunday<lb />
Chris Sachs<lb />
OPINION COLUMNIST<lb />
Get ready everyone, Sunday is almost upon us. Stock<lb />
up on chips, meat, booze and large television sets. Call<lb />
your bookies now and take all the cash out of your<lb />
girlfriend's purse. That's right everyone, it's Super bowl<lb />
time! That time of the year where there really is some-<lb />
thing worth watching on TV. Pure carnage at it's best,<lb />
and that is just the Super bowl party; the game is pretty<lb />
good, too.<lb />
As men we all reach a climax in the end of January.<lb />
We build up pressure of watching mediocre teams play<lb />
mediocre games and watch as our favorite teams lose<lb />
the AFC championship. We suffer with our girlfriends<lb />
nagging us on Sundays and getting dragged to Lane<lb />
Bryant sales at the mall when we should have been<lb />
home watching the final 30 seconds. We answer the<lb />
phone when Mom calls right when the game gets in-<lb />
teresting. We have designated drivers when the local<lb />
pub shows a Monday night game and draft beers are<lb />
only a Peso each.<lb />
But when it comes to the Super bowl, all the gloves<lb />
come off. The girlfriends get locked in the closet, the<lb />
phone gets a drop kick into the street, the car keys get<lb />
thrown in the woods, and the pyramid of kegs in the<lb />
living room gets dry, one per hour. We have slabs of<lb />
meat on the grill so large that they would make Fred<lb />
Flintsone commit suicide.<lb />
We have enough chips and dip to build edible mud<lb />
huts all over the city. We have the 215 inch TV plugged<lb />
into a stereo system with enough decibels to make your<lb />
nose bleed. This is what it's all about men. The best of<lb />
the best fighting it out, and the best party of the year.<lb />
It's in our nature fellas, grab your clubs and give a grunt.<lb />
The pigskin is gonna fly!<lb />
Personally, I don't care who wins this year, the Rams<lb />
or the Titans, but I do care about the game itself. I just,<lb />
want to watch the best. I want to watch the commer-<lb />
cials that cost two billion dollars per half second. But i<lb />
usually root for the team that lives closet to my home<lb />
state. So I will have to go for the Titans, but I have an<lb />
uncle in St. Louis, so maybe I should go with them<lb />
Which team is better?<lb />
I have no idea and I don't care. I just want to see<lb />
broken arms and ambulances on the field. I jqjjt want<lb />
good excuse to have furniture thrown about ittyapart<lb />
ment in a drunken rage and wake up with 40 snoozing!<lb />
men on my couch. Then I know the night was worth it;<lb />
and a good party was thrown. Because that is what the'<lb />
Super bowl is all about. !<lb />
So fellas, skip classes for the rest of the week and go!<lb />
out and get supplies. Classes will be here next week<lb />
and you can fail them later, but the Super bowl only"<lb />
comes once a year. !<lb />

"They don't know how to get<lb />

break from his day job to play<lb />
pseudo-journalist. "As soon as they<lb />
remembered Ray in that dumb col-<lb />
lar, they said, 'We're not going to<lb />
sell out like that<lb />
Indeed, both teams seemed to<lb />
learn from the Falcons' self-destruc-<lb />
tion.<lb />
Atlanta's players were bickering<lb />
when they got off the plane. Terance<lb />
Mathis decided it was the proper<lb />
time to discuss a heretofore un-<lb />
known alcohol problem. Buchanan<lb />
said Denver tight end Shannon<lb />
Sharpe looked like a Kentucky<lb />
Derby entry. Worst of all, Eugene<lb />
Robinson was arrested the night<lb />
before the game on a charge of so-<lb />
liciting sex from an undercover po-<lb />
lice officer.<lb />
Titans coach Jeff Fisher asked his<lb />
players to please refrain from those<lb />
type of antics.<lb />
"He told us to enjoy the mo-<lb />
ment cornerback Samari RoIIe<lb />
said, "but don't get silly about it<lb />
from page 8<lb />
Buchanan, who also wound up<lb />
with a journalist's pass around his<lb />
neck instead of something studded,<lb />
did his best to dress down the for-<lb />
mal atmosphere.<lb />
"These guys look a little tense, a<lb />
little intense he said. "They need<lb />
to loosen up, have some fun<lb />
So Buchanan waded into a group<lb />
of reporters surrounding Titans<lb />
safety Blaine Bishop, armeel with a<lb />
microphone from the Black Enter-<lb />
tainment Television network.<lb />
"You should be loose<lb />
Buchanan said grinning mischie-<lb />
vously. "There should be a smile on<lb />
your face<lb />
"I'm pretty loose Bishop said,<lb />
managing a weak smile.<lb />
"Just don't guarantee a victory<lb />
Buchanan said.<lb />
"Oh, no Bishop said. "I would<lb />
never do that. Not with all the<lb />
weapons they have<lb />
With those kind of answers, it<lb />
was not surprising that yet another<lb />
guest journalist, Dallas Cowboys<lb />
lineman Nate Newton, seemed<lb />
bored by the whole affair.<lb />
"This media stuff is not all it's<lb />
