will be officially named head coach<lb/>
in a press conference slated for<lb/>
Friday.<lb/>
Pitino has reportedly inked a<lb/>
nine year deal worth over 145 mil-<lb/>
lion dollars.<lb/>
The contract is the largest in col-<lb/>
tege basketball history. The<lb/>
specifics of the deal have not been<lb/>
released.<lb/>
Tuition will be increased by 200<lb/>
percent over the next year to pay<lb/>
for Pitino's services.<lb/>
Student reaction to the deal was<lb/>
mixed.<lb/>
"Do what?" said senior, Physical<lb/>
Therapy major, Chase Harrington.<lb/>
"I knew they wanted a good coach,<lb/>
but that's a lot of money<lb/>
Other students were less critical.<lb/>
"Who's Rick Pitino?" said<lb/>
sophomore, Decision Sciences<lb/>
major, Bryan Schultheis.<lb/>
ECU athletes are pleased with<lb/>
the signing.<lb/>
"That would be straight said<lb/>
ECU sprinter Britt Cox. "Pitino is a<lb/>
good coach, but they should have<lb/>

was "unaware of the risk" and has<lb/>
taken steps to reduce the radiation<lb/>
by at least 13 percent.<lb/>

The ECU board of Regents, in<lb/>
conjunction with ECU Athletics,<lb/>
announced a decision yesterday<lb/>
that will have a profound effect on<lb/>
Pirate attitude: Petey the Pirate is<lb/>
scheduled to become a kinder,<lb/>
gentler mascot beginning next<lb/>
Monday.<lb/>
"We've had complaints in the<lb/>
past, ever since Petey changed his<lb/>
image last year said board mem-<lb/>
ber Nass T Oldman.<lb/>
Petey's new image impressed<lb/>
students and faculty at first, but<lb/>
the sudden weight loss and the<lb/>
new pressure to look "cool" have<lb/>
taken their toll on him mentally.<lb/>
This year has been turbulent<lb/>
for our mascot, the brave and<lb/>
valiant Petey the Pirate.<lb/>
After a strenuous semester of<lb/>
dieting and exercising in the<lb/>
Minges training room, Petey<lb/>
proudly displayed his slimmer,<lb/>
trimmer, more muscular physique<lb/>
to the world a year ago.<lb/>
But Petey had changed, some-<lb/>
how.<lb/>
No longer the pleasantly portly<lb/>
soul seen scowling down in a dis-<lb/>
pleased manner from water towers<lb/>
and store windows, Petey had<lb/>
taken to acts of unwarranted<lb/>
aggression on and off the field.<lb/>
Coach Q. Tipp Browne of the<lb/>
ECU badminton team agrees<lb/>
wholeheartedly with the decision,<lb/>
citing his own personal relief that<lb/>
the "reign of terror" is now over.<lb/>
"Petey would verbally harass<lb/>
team members Browne recalled.<lb/>
"Then he would wait until they<lb/>
went to use the restroom during<lb/>
practice, and take away their lunch<lb/>
money<lb/>
Scheduled changes for Monday<lb/>
include a nice smile, ruffly sleeves<lb/>
and cuddly tummy that children<lb/>
and adults alike will love to rub.<lb/>
Now the streets will be safer,<lb/>
and students will not have to worry<lb/>
about being attacked at practice.<lb/>
"The changes haven't come a<lb/>
moment too soon said freshman<lb/>
Ben Dover. "We want the old<lb/>
Petev back<lb/>

Committee honors mall preacher with statue<lb/>
Birdlove condemns<lb/>
students lifestyles<lb/>
KRISTY KREME<lb/>
LATE WRITER<lb/>
A statue of the annual mall visitor<lb/>
has been given to the school in<lb/>
honor of his mission work.<lb/>
Jery Birdlove, an evangelist<lb/>
that visits ECU's campus annually,<lb/>
has decided<lb/>
to give a<lb/>
statue in<lb/>
honor of his<lb/>
message.<lb/>
Birdlove<lb/>
feels the<lb/>
campus<lb/>
needs the<lb/>
statue to<lb/>
remind them of their daily sin.<lb/>
The statue will be placed in the<lb/>
mall directly across from the library.<lb/>
When people walk by, the statue<lb/>
will blurt but phrases. Birdlove<lb/>
feels if the statue is here on cam-<lb/>
pus, then there will be less of a<lb/>
need for him to come here and<lb/>
preach to the students.<lb/>
The statue will stand on a plat-<lb/>
form and be a total of nine feet in<lb/>
height. Birdlove will be holding a<lb/>
Bible and.pointing his finger as if<lb/>
he were preaching.<lb/>
The estimated cost of the statue<lb/>
is $200,000.<lb/>
Birdlove,<lb/>
who claims<lb/>
to have a<lb/>
degree<lb/>
from the<lb/>
Christ to<lb/>
the Nations<lb/>
Bible<lb/>
College in<lb/>
Dallas,<lb/>
Texas, travels from university to<lb/>
university to preach to the many<lb/>
students about sin.<lb/>
According to Birdlove, ECU is<lb/>
one of the top party schools in the<lb/>
country and is in sore need of<lb/>
reformation.<lb/>
Birdlove has<lb/>
his opinion on<lb/>
women being<lb/>
subservient to<lb/>
their husbands.<lb/>
He feels women<lb/>
should obey and<lb/>
submit to their<lb/>
husbands.<lb/>
"When you<lb/>
meet a man like<lb/>
me, you'll want<lb/>
to submit also<lb/>
Birdlove said.<lb/>
Birdlove was<lb/>
quick to judge<lb/>
the women in<lb/>
his attending<lb/>
crowd the last time he came to<lb/>
campus. He was constantly<lb/>
reminding them they were living in<lb/>
un because they were wearing<lb/>
"B(<lb/>
It . 'V.J. C4,<lb/>
8fk-<lb/>
11PJP1 EHHHw<lb/>
short shorts.<lb/>
He event went as far as saying<lb/>
that declining grades comes from<lb/>
masturbation.<lb/>
"I think Birdlove is full of noth-<lb/>
ing. How would<lb/>
he know this fact,<lb/>
unless it came<lb/>
from personal<lb/>
experience said<lb/>
one male in the<lb/>
crowd.<lb/>
Despite the<lb/>
fact that Birdsong<lb/>
enrages specta-<lb/>
tors each year he<lb/>
visits, the univer-<lb/>
sity is allowing<lb/>
his stature to<lb/>
stand on the mall.<lb/>
A sensor will<lb/>
detect passersby<lb/>
and trigger a digi-<lb/>
tal voice to shout some of his<lb/>
favorite sayings.<lb/>

Following the success of the<lb/>
Athletic Department's Diamond<lb/>
Girl program, plans were<lb/>
announced in a press conference<lb/>
Monday for a spin-off called Hoop<lb/>
Hos.<lb/>
The Hoop Hos program will<lb/>
solicit female college students to<lb/>
try out for a coveted spot as a<lb/>
1999-2000 Hoop Ho.<lb/>
Ron Jeremy, Director of the<lb/>
program said women will be cho-<lb/>
sen according to the following cri-<lb/>
teria:<lb/>
"Candidates must know where<lb/>
Williams Arena is.<lb/>
"Candidates must at least pre-<lb/>
tend to enjoy basketball.<lb/>
"Candidate should maintain a<lb/>
maximum 2.0 GPA<lb/>
"The exceptional candidate<lb/>
should be able to walk, jiggle, and<lb/>
recruit adolescent high school<lb/>
players all at the same time.<lb/>
Jeremy made it clear that this<lb/>
program should not be confused<lb/>
with Pirate Cheerleaders or Pure<lb/>
Gold Dancers.<lb/>
"We are not looking for women<lb/>
with any particular athletic tal-<lb/>
ents, so to speak Jeremy said.<lb/>
"We want to celebrate the natural<lb/>
abilities of young ladies and apply<lb/>
those abilities to help boost ticket<lb/>
sales, secure better recruits and<lb/>
brighten up promotional events<lb/>
The program is being modeled<lb/>
after the WCW's Nitro Girls.<lb/>
"We don't really expect our<lb/>
girls to achieve what the Nitro<lb/>
Girls have Jeremy said. "Not in<lb/>
the first year anyway<lb/>
Jeremy has already ordered<lb/>
propts that should arrive before<lb/>
the first practice session.<lb/>
"We've got tassels, fingerpaint,<lb/>
all colors of latex fabric for uni-<lb/>
forms and most importantly eight<lb/>
inch platforms, " Jeremy said.<lb/>
"We want these ladies concentrat-<lb/>
ing on walking well and looking<lb/>
hot. There really shouldn't he<lb/>
anytime to think about anything
