Cerutti arrested after<lb/>
buying Hydrocodone<lb/>
S T E v i: L 6 s i: v<lb/>
NEWS EDITOR<lb/>
Steven Cerutti, an ECU foreign<lb/>
languages professor, appeared in<lb/>
court for the first time Monday to<lb/>
answer charges of obtaining a con-<lb/>
trolled substance by fraud. A con-<lb/>
tinuance was filed and<lb/>
Cerutti will next appear in<lb/>
court Oct. 2i. Cerutti was<lb/>
arrested Friday.<lb/>
The arrest report said<lb/>
Cerutti used a forged pre-<lb/>
scription to obtain<lb/>
Hydrocodone at the CVS<lb/>
Pharmacy at 505 S.<lb/>
Memorial Drive.<lb/>
Cerutti declined to<lb/>
comment on the arrest.<lb/>
Obtaining a controlled<lb/>
substance by fraud is a<lb/>
class I felony that is punishable by<lb/>
a maximum penalty of a 10 month<lb/>
suspended sentence for a first<lb/>
offense and 15 months for anyone<lb/>
with a previous criminal record.<lb/>
Police say that Cerutti gave a<lb/>
CVS pharmacist a prescription to<lb/>
buy Hydrocodone. The pharma-<lb/>
"The CVS pharmacist then<lb/>
called the doctor whose name was<lb/>
on the prescription said Melissa<lb/>
Bartlett, public information officer<lb/>
for the Greenville Police<lb/>
Department. "The doctor con-<lb/>
firmed that the prescription was<lb/>
forged<lb/>
The police were then called and<lb/>
Cerutti was arrested by Officer<lb/>
P.D. O'Callaghan. Cerutti was later<lb/>
freed on a $1500 secured bond.<lb/>
Students and colleagues of<lb/>
Cerutti reacted with shock to the<lb/>
news.<lb/>
"It is evident that<lb/>
Cerutti has had a<lb/>
tremendous impact on<lb/>
not only the Classics<lb/>
Depc, but also on indi-<lb/>
vidual students' lives<lb/>
said Amanda Austin,<lb/>
senior classics major.<lb/>
"We are all adult<lb/>
enough to realize that<lb/>
all people make mis-<lb/>
takes, learn from their<lb/>
mistakes and as a result<lb/>
become better people<lb/>
Last Thursday, TEC published<lb/>
a profile of Cerutti that called him<lb/>
an "innovator of the classics pro-<lb/>

Many of Francis Speight's paintings hang in buildings across<lb/>
campus. An auditorium in the Jenkins Fine Arts Center and a building<lb/>
bear the name of ECU's first artist-in-residence, but the house he<lb/>
spent the last quarter century of his life in could be demolished to<lb/>
make way for a major entrance off of Tenth Street.<lb/>
"The master plan developed in 1992 called for the creation of a new<lb/>
front door off of 10th Street said Layton Getsinger, vice chancellor<lb/>
for Administration and Finance. "We've been working with the North<lb/>
Carolina Historical Society to see if there is a place to move the house<lb/>
instead of demolishing it<lb/>
Several other organiza-<lb/>
tions, including the Pitt<lb/>
County Historical Society,<lb/>
are working to find a vacant<lb/>
lot towhich to move the<lb/>
Speight home. However,<lb/>
finding a location to move<lb/>
the entire house to is easier<lb/>
said than done.<lb/>
"At this point, we'vi<lb/>
identified some lots and are<lb/>
discussing with the owners<lb/>
about selling, but nothing<lb/>
has been pinned down<lb/>
said Scott Powers, regional<lb/>
supervisor for Archives and<lb/>
History at the State Historic<lb/>
Preservation Office. "What<lb/>
we'd like to see is a residen-<lb/>
tial setting near ECU with ;<lb/>
houses of the same size and age. The lot also has to be big enough<lb/>
The lot size is not a pressing coneernaccording to Powers, because<lb/>
"most lots, if they are vacant, are of the appropriate size<lb/>
Speight was one of the preeminent artists to come from North<lb/>
Carolina. He was born in 18 on a farm outside of Windsor and<lb/>

attended Wake Forest College for three years. He studied at<lb/>
Washington, D.Cs Cdfcoran School of Art and transferred to the<lb/>
Pennsylvania Academy, where he spent the next forty years studying,<lb/>
teaching, and refining his art.<lb/>
While Speight was in Pennsylvania, he never forgot his roots. He<lb/>
often visited North Carolina and, in 1931, became a charter member of<lb/>
the N.C. Association of Professional Artists. In 1934, he taught a sum-<lb/>
mer art class at UNC-Chapel Hill. That year, his classes were so pop-<lb/>
ular that Speight found he had three times the expected number of<lb/>
students enrolled. The turnout for his courses ensured an art curricu-<lb/>
lum at Chapel Hill.<lb/>
Speight decided to permanantly return to his home state to paint<lb/>
more of North Carolina's landscapes. In 1961, Chancellor Leo W.<lb/>
Jenkins appointed Speight ECU'S first artist-in-residence, a position<lb/>
he held until his retirement in 1976.<lb/>
In 1936 Speight married Sara Blakeslee, herself a respected artist,<lb/>
and they had two children, Thomas and Elizabeth. Speight and his<lb/>
wife lived in their house just off of Ninth Street until his death in 1989<lb/>
at the age of 93. Mrs. Speight moved back to Pennsylvania last sum-<lb/>
mer to be closer to her children.<lb/>
ECU owns the Speight home and the house next door, and as such<lb/>
have every right to do what they wish, but have been "very coopera-<lb/>
tive" towards the people trying to move the home, Powers said. The<lb/>
woman who lives next to the Speight home has a rent contract with<lb/>
ECU. Until she moves, the university can do nothing to the houses,<lb/>
which gives those involved more time to find a vacant lot.<lb/>
"(If the Speight home were torn down ECU would lose a tangi-<lb/>
ble reminder of two of the most important artists to come out of North<lb/>
Carolina said Mauri York, biographer of the Speights. "I realize and<lb/>
respect that the university has a master plan and Chancellor Eakin has<lb/>
done a wonderful job improving the campus' appearance, but it would<lb/>
be nice if this structure could be preserved<lb/>

member of the event and is part of<lb/>
the move to get Greenville resi-<lb/>

"This has been in the planning<lb/>
for 2 years Mickschultz said.<lb/>
Planners of the event are hoping<lb/>
to get approximately 30,000 people<lb/>
to attend. Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium<lb/>
holds up to 43,000 people. Parking<lb/>
is free to all those attending and<lb/>
accommodations are being<lb/>
arranged.<lb/>
"Since I've been here, we<lb/>
haven't used Dowdy-Ficklen<lb/>

football games said Stephen<lb/>
Gray, associate director of<lb/>
University Unions. "They're going<lb/>
to cover up the grass with a tarp for<lb/>

to the grass<lb/>
"Several hundred communities<lb/>
around the nation applied to hold<lb/>
the Festival but only 9 were select-<lb/>

ECU's housekeepers were honored Tuesday<lb/>
with catered lunches and dinners that kicked off<lb/>
International Housekeeping Week.<lb/>
There was a lunch-in at noon on Tuesday for<lb/>
the day staff and a dinner that followed for the<lb/>
night shift. Flowet baskets, electric lights, and<lb/>
pineapples were a few of the prizes given away<lb/>
in drawings.<lb/>
"It is wonderful to celebrate the excellent<lb/>
work that our housekeeping staff does all year<lb/>
long at this university said Dr. George Harrell,<lb/>
assistant vice chancellor for Administration and<lb/>
Finance.<lb/>
According to Harrell, the housing staff did a<lb/>
lot of extra work during the past summer. The<lb/>
staff had a successful move-in weekend in the<lb/>
residence halls, and they prepared for the meet-<lb/>
ing with Tipper Gore in the Rivers building.<lb/>
The first football game clean up went<lb/>
very smoothly.<lb/>
"We thought after this summer we could<lb/>
rest, but the activity has not stopped said<lb/>
Frank Pravdick, director of housekeeping services.<lb/>

voting for the King and Queen will<lb/>
take place on Saturday, October 10,<lb/>

will be narrowed down by the start<lb/>
of Homecoming. Festivities begin<lb/>
on Monday, October 5, and run<lb/>
through Saturday the 10.<lb/>
On October 5, the activities will<lb/>
begin with a Homecoming court<lb/>
reception where the final candi-<lb/>
dates will be announced and put in<lb/>
the competition.<lb/>
Tuesday night is autograph<lb/>
night and will be held at the Plaza<lb/>
Mall. This will be an opportunity<lb/>
for children to come out and get<lb/>
autographs from ECU football<lb/>
players and cheerleaders.<lb/>
Autograph night is aimed from ages<lb/>
five to 15, but all students are also<lb/>
encouraged to attend.<lb/>
Wednesday night will be the<lb/>
Banner Contest, where school affil-<lb/>
iated organizations make banners<lb/>
for a competition. Thursday will be<lb/>
Pirate Fest, a university pep tally<lb/>
where the cheerleaders and the<lb/>
gospel choir will participate.<lb/>

Each fall semester ECU sponsors Career Day, which is a chance for students to learn about<lb/>
different careers and what jobs they can get with the degrees they are currently pursuing.<lb/>
On September 23, the General Classroom building will be packed with representatives from<lb/>
a wide variety of companies, all of which hope to help students narrow their career and<lb/>
academic interests into workable goals.<lb/>
We at TEC feel that part of taking advantage of every opportunity available to you includes<lb/>
participation in Career Day.<lb/>
Talking to someone who has a career in the field you're interested in can help clear up<lb/>
misconceptions, doubts and anxieties about the job. It can also help you determine if the job<lb/>
is right for you.<lb/>
Career Day is also a way to help you solidify your major, or to change it if necessary. If you<lb/>
attend, you'll have the perfect chance to ask yourself, and people with experience, if your<lb/>
major is the right path to take in pursuing the career you want.<lb/>
Even if you have no idea what you want to do with the rest of your life, Career Day is a good<lb/>
place to start thinking about it. You can pick up literature about fields that interest you, and the<lb/>
representatives will be able to explain the pros and cons of their jobs to you.<lb/>
Internship opportunities are available, too. The representatives will be ready to tell you<lb/>
about different ways to beef up your resume and make it stand out from the rest.<lb/>
Ask the real professionals questions while you have the chance. You may even discover a<lb/>
career that you'd never even though of before, or see an overlooked choice in an entirely new<lb/>
light.<lb/>
It's never too early to start preparing for graduation and to begin deciding what you want out<lb/>
of life.<lb/>
Use Career Day as a tool for discovering exactly what's out there, so that when the time<lb/>
comes to make your decision you'll be informed.<lb/>
If you'd like to learn more about how to get the career you want but can't make it to Career<lb/>
Day, contact Career Services at 328-6050 or Career Counseling at 328-6661.<lb/>

because the general American<lb/>
public is tired and bored with the<lb/>
whole Clinton scandal. This<lb/>
growing apathy towards the<lb/>
Clinton-Lewinsky situation, while<lb/>
perhaps founded, is harmful to the<lb/>
case and to the forces that propel<lb/>
and counteract it. I think there arc-<lb/>
some basic, simple truths that<lb/>
should be highlighted in order to<lb/>
make a proper judgment call on<lb/>
the whirlwind of scandals and<lb/>
events.<lb/>
First, every person involved in<lb/>
this case is scum to some degree.<lb/>
Clinton, Starr, Lewinsky,<lb/>
Lewinsky's mother, Tripp?the<lb/>
whole lot. They represent<lb/>
everything that is negative about<lb/>
politicsi.eself-seeking, amoral.<lb/>
etc.Thcrefore, based on their total<lb/>
disregards for the truths, none of<lb/>
them are to be trusted. So finding<lb/>
the "truth" through the quagmire<lb/>
of accusations, denials, and<lb/>
betrayals is practically impossible.<lb/>
Secondly, we do have a right to<lb/>
know what Clinton did (and most<lb/>
likely continues to do) even if that<lb/>
intrudes on his private life. Even<lb/>
though this may sound unfair, well,<lb/>
neither is life. lie is our presidem<lb/>
and if he is doing things that brings<lb/>
his office and therefore our country<lb/>
into disrepute, then his<lb/>
constituents have a right to know,<lb/>
BUT making Kenneth Starr's<lb/>
report open to the public is just too<lb/>
much. It's too much because that<lb/>
report is so raunchy it's<lb/>
embarrassing to our country. Plus,<lb/>
making the report accessible to<lb/>
children is wrong. Children do not<lb/>
need to view the symbol of our<lb/>
country in the way he is portrayed<lb/>
(accurate or not) in the Starr report.<lb/>
That is a sure-fire way to disillusion<lb/>
future generations to government<lb/>
and politics.<lb/>
Thirdly, Gore becoming<lb/>
president is just a scary thought. I<lb/>
am not a big Clinton fan, but if<lb/>
removing him means promoting<lb/>
(iore, then a serious review needs<lb/>
to be made. Gore represents the<lb/>
notion that things can always get<lb/>
worse<lb/>
Finally, Clinton's removal is not<lb/>
a legal debate but rather a political<lb/>
contest.<lb/>
Congress is only going to act<lb/>
how their voters compel them to<lb/>
act. The legal issues are a<lb/>
smokescreen, existing only to add a<lb/>
tad bit of validity to the<lb/>
Congressional decision. This is<lb/>
where the public comes in. So,<lb/>
once again, we should not throw<lb/>
our hands up. It is more important<lb/>
than ever and is quite crucial to<lb/>
evaluate the case and voice and<lb/>
educated opinion.<lb/>
Columnist gets parking woes opinion<lb/>
Columnist<lb/>
parked in a no parking<lb/>
zone at 7:57 am, three<lb/>
minutes before it was legal. I<lb/>
came back from class and my<lb/>
truck was gone. I found it at<lb/>
the University Amoco and<lb/>
paid fifty five dollars to those<lb/>
toothless wonders and got my<lb/>
truck and the ticket.<lb/>
Sometimes I think the local police-<lb/>
need to get their act straight. They<lb/>
always seem to nail the students for<lb/>
things even our hometown cops<lb/>
would let slide. I'm sure that many<lb/>
of you have had experiences with<lb/>
the ECU and Greenville police.<lb/>
Here is my history of experiences<lb/>
with the man.<lb/>
During the tailgate this past<lb/>
week, I saw five uniformed officers<lb/>
and one undercover officer give-<lb/>
one guy a ticket for underage-<lb/>
possession of alcohol. At the same<lb/>
time, I saw a lady Stumble to her<lb/>
car and drive out of the tailgating<lb/>
field, drunk as a fish. That's sort of<lb/>
like writing a ticket for jaywalking<lb/>
while there's a murder happening<lb/>
right beside you. Sure it's stupid,<lb/>
but at least they'll meet their quota<lb/>
for tickets this month.<lb/>
In August, 1 was stopped and<lb/>
the officer asked for all the regular<lb/>
documents. I Ie took me back into<lb/>
his unmarked car and gave me a<lb/>
ticket for a missing registration. I<lb/>
never found out why he Stopped<lb/>
me,but luckily the DA threw it out<lb/>
of court. Also, I parked in a no<lb/>
parking zone at 7: 57 am, three<lb/>
minutes before it was legal. I came<lb/>
back from class and my truck was<lb/>
gone. I found it at the University<lb/>
Amoco and paid fifty five dollars to<lb/>
get my truck and the ticket. The<lb/>
cop had ticketed it at 7:59 am and<lb/>
called the tow truck, one minute<lb/>
before it would be legally parked.<lb/>
Then, I parked for 5 minutes at<lb/>
RingGoid Towers, and went to<lb/>
drop off some papers in a freind's<lb/>
apartment in the building. When I<lb/>
RingGoid 'Towers, low and behold,<lb/>
my truck was gone. I Iniversity<lb/>
Amoco strikes again. I think that if<lb/>
they had frequent tower miles, I<lb/>
would have a trip to 'Tahiti by now.<lb/>
And even my friends arc not<lb/>
immune from persecution. lv<lb/>
friend Anthony pulled into a<lb/>
parking spot from the wrong<lb/>
direction in front of Jones I lall anil<lb/>
got an eighty five dollar ticket<lb/>
Then he got a ticket for having his<lb/>
resident sticker on the wrong side<lb/>
of his back window. My friend John<lb/>
got a ticket for doing 20 in a 15 on<lb/>
College Hill Drive. Dan was<lb/>
stopped and searched because he-<lb/>
had a Cannabis sticker on his back<lb/>
window. 'That doesn't sound like-<lb/>
probable cause to me.<lb/>
1 don't believe for one<lb/>
minute,that there is that little-<lb/>
crime in Greenville such that the<lb/>
Police Department has to devote<lb/>
such a large chunk of their force to<lb/>
being meter maids and harassing<lb/>
college students. I have gotten so<lb/>
tired of the city's constant<lb/>
meddling with myself and my<lb/>
friends, that 1 am applying to<lb/>
transfer to Virginia Tech . 'They<lb/>
seem to be a bit more respectful to<lb/>
their students. The city seems to<lb/>
forget that without us students and<lb/>
our money, Greenville would still<lb/>
be nothing but a tobacco field and<lb/>
a gas station on US 264. And I<lb/>
would rather spend my money on<lb/>
an education.<lb/>

Ride a bike for health, happiness<lb/>
Write a Letter to tke Editor<lb/>
Got something to say? Need somewhere to say it?<lb/>
Bring your letter to the eastcarolinian , located on the<lb/>
2nd floor of The Student Publications Building<lb/>
mean, consider all the<lb/>
advantages of riding your<lb/>
bike. Sure, you can t go very<lb/>
far. But if all your friends<lb/>
can't go very far either, then<lb/>
you can all stay where you<lb/>
are and form a loving,<lb/>
happy little commune. It<lb/>
worked in the sixties!<lb/>
Today I woke up at seven o'clock<lb/>
(in the AM, you slackers), crawled<lb/>
out of bed and stumbled into the<lb/>
shower, threw some crap in a bag<lb/>
and missed breakfast- all so that I<lb/>
could ride my bike to work. And I<lb/>
feel great.<lb/>
I was only ten minutes late and<lb/>
successfully avoided any major<lb/>
collisions with a vehicle, curb, or<lb/>
pedestrian. Ami I was only honked<lb/>
at and veiled at negatively five or<lb/>
six times. My faithful old bike- and<lb/>
old is truly an understatement- got<lb/>
me to work safely, and I didn't<lb/>
have to feel responsible for any air<lb/>
pollution or strip mining for fossil<lb/>
fuels in the process.<lb/>
You know, after you do that just<lb/>
once, suddenly all those thousands<lb/>
of Japanese people you see on TV<lb/>
biking to work don't seem crazy at<lb/>
all. In fact, they seem a lot more<lb/>
sane than the rest of us. The only-<lb/>
downside to the whole trip (if you<lb/>
don't consider the fact that I'm<lb/>
incredibly out of shape and that<lb/>
my bike had been sitting in the<lb/>
leaky basement of my parent's<lb/>
house for the past six years,<lb/>
completely untouched by human<lb/>
hands) was that every other breath<lb/>
1 took was probably toxic.<lb/>
Mnimmm, carbon monoxide '<lb/>
Now, if only half of the people<lb/>
who live in any sort of proximity to<lb/>
work or school would just leave<lb/>
their cars parked a little more<lb/>
often, then when we do get out of<lb/>
bed early to ride our bikes, we<lb/>
could take deep long breaths, or<lb/>
short windy ones like me, and not<lb/>
poison our lungs. Wouldn't that be<lb/>
great?<lb/>
I mean, consider all the<lb/>
advantages of riding your bike.<lb/>
Sure, you can't go very far. But if all<lb/>
your friends can't go very far either,<lb/>
then you can all stay w here you arc<lb/>
and form a loving, happy little<lb/>
commune. It worked in the sixties!<lb/>
And consider the shapely IcgJJ<lb/>
muscles you will get- after the"<lb/>
bruises heal. You eventually ??<lb/>
develop a tolerance to inclimate <lb/>
weather, including but not limited J<lb/>
to snow, rain, sleet, hail, and"<lb/>
hurricane-like conditions. In the??<lb/>
end you would be able to ride!<lb/>
through hell, give Satan a high<lb/>
five, and come back to tell thejj<lb/>
story. ??<lb/>
Oh, and a certain angry littleii<lb/>
traffic cop would have a really! J<lb/>
difficult time towing a bike, don't;J<lb/>
you think: Of course. I'm not"<lb/>
switching to a bike just to get backa<lb/>
at him. Of course I'm not. (But just<lb/>
try and tow this, you little turd.) ;j<lb/>
I think that wc would be a'j<lb/>
much happier group of people if??<lb/>
we would ride our bikes more<lb/>
often. I am happier from just one<lb/>
trip, for god's sake. Okay, maybe all <lb/>
this stems from the fact that my car t<lb/>
doesn't work any more. But who !<lb/>
cares: I'm selling that lemon and <lb/>
getting a Lemond. baby. Until j<lb/>
winter comes. Then I may change i<lb/>
my mind. But in the meantime, if t<lb/>
yOu're riding down the street in <lb/>
vour gas-guzzling tank and happen J<lb/>
upon a rusty old bike- with two flat j<lb/>
tires and a really happy person on ?<lb/>
it. know that it's me, and t'lri gonna !<lb/>

SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
Dr. Robert Morrison is no less than<lb/>
extraordinary as he balances partici-<lb/>
pating in grueling marathon and<lb/>
triathlon events and teaching<lb/>
(Ihcmistry courses at ECU.<lb/>
Morrison recently participated in<lb/>
the International Triathlon Union<lb/>
World Championship in Lausanne,<lb/>
Switzerland. lie had to go through<lb/>
an extensive process to be eligible for<lb/>
this international competition.<lb/>
"You have to qualify in a U.S.<lb/>
sanctioned race Morrison said. "If<lb/>
vou're in the top three, you qualify<lb/>
for the national championships<lb/>
In the national championships,<lb/>
those who are in the top 12 are eligi-<lb/>
ble to go on to the world champi-<lb/>
onships. Morrison placed seventh in<lb/>
this race.<lb/>
The world championship compe-<lb/>
tition began wirJvajjflgp?ter swim.<lb/>

tion consists of a road race on foot<lb/>
over a 10 kilometer course.<lb/>
Morrison finished 17th place in<lb/>
his age bracket.<lb/>
Lcnjoy the bike part of the race<lb/>
Morrison saidi but I run the best. I<lb/>
can pick up time in that category<lb/>
It was in one of his courses that<lb/>
Morrison received his inspiration to<lb/>
run races. In 1972, Morrison taught a<lb/>
student who was a marathon runner.<lb/>
His enthusiasm was so contagious,<lb/>
Morrison decided to give it a try.<lb/>
"He was very enthusiastic about<lb/>
marathons Morrison said. "I would<lb/>
train with him for the races<lb/>
In 1980, it was another friend that<lb/>
convinced Morrison to get involved<lb/>
in triathlons.<lb/>
"It was a veryjpjHhg sport then<lb/>
Morrison said. " 5M Ironman had<lb/>
only been going on for a couple of<lb/>
years<lb/>
From that moment on, Morrison<lb/>
has kept active with triathlons. I lc<lb/>
said he usually does two or three<lb/>
triathlons a year, but he has already<lb/>
participated in five.<lb/>
Morrison trains extensively to<lb/>
keep himself in phenomenal shape<lb/>
to participate in these races.<lb/>
According to Morrison, his training<lb/>
involves running, cycling and swim-<lb/>
ming three times a week and exten-<lb/>
sive workouts on the weekends. I lc<lb/>
is also a member of the East Carolina<lb/>
Velo club, a bicycle organization that<lb/>
began last year on campus.<lb/>
Morrison nas participated in 21<lb/>
marathons, the last one which took<lb/>
place in Charlotte, NC in 1994,<lb/>
Recently he has been training<lb/>
with 35 year old Carl Bonner, a local<lb/>
engineer who, Morrison said, is a very<lb/>
good triathlete.<lb/>
"I lc has been training to do the<lb/>
"Hawaii Ironman the first of next<lb/>
month Morrison said. "He has<lb/>
inspired me to get involved in the<lb/>
national and international events<lb/>
Morrison will continue his compe-<lb/>
titions this month. On September<lb/>
27, he is going to participate in the<lb/>
Senior Games bicycle races.<lb/>
There is always good competition<lb/>
in my age bracket Morrison said.<lb/>
Morrison graduated with a B.S. in<lb/>
Chemistry from the College of<lb/>
Kmporia. a small Presbyterian col-<lb/>
lege in Kmporia, Kansas. Krom<lb/>
there, he moved on to receive his<lb/>
PhD. in Chemistry at the University<lb/>
of Nebraska in 1969. In 1970, he-<lb/>
joined the ECU start" where he has<lb/>
remained for the last 2H years.<lb/>
"I worked as an assistant analyst in<lb/>
the computing center for two years<lb/>
and then transferred to the<lb/>
Chemistry department in 1972<lb/>

Hurricane safety myths brought to light<lb/>
Taped windows not<lb/>
much for protection<lb/>
I'll I I II' (?' I I I I s<lb/>
, II W RITfcR<lb/>
Why should we board up the win-<lb/>
dows during a hurricane? Is it true<lb/>
that two hurricanes can combine to<lb/>
ffjrrn one big one? Since all the big<lb/>
hurricanes have already happened,<lb/>
We do not have to worry about them<lb/>
inv moreright; These questions<lb/>
and myths have conic up since<lb/>
Hurricane Bonnie, and given the<lb/>
ictivity of other hurricanes in<lb/>
recent ueeks. they are becoming<lb/>
more and more important.<lb/>
Let's start off with the basics<lb/>
first: What is the difference<lb/>
between a hurricane water) and a<lb/>
hurricane warning? A watch means<lb/>
that storm conditions are right for<lb/>
potentially dangerous Weather.<lb/>
During a hurricane watch, people<lb/>
should be stocking up on emer-<lb/>
gency supplies, and for those who<lb/>
live near the ocean, it niav be the<lb/>
time to prepare for evacuation.<lb/>
When a hurricane warning is issued.<lb/>
it means that hurricane conditions<lb/>
(a storm with winds of seventy four<lb/>
m.p.h. or greater) is expected in the<lb/>
area in twenty four hours or less. In<lb/>
the event of a warning, people<lb/>
should either evacuate or move to<lb/>
safe shelter.<lb/>
Just because Bonnie has passed<lb/>
and left everyone with the sense<lb/>
that there is not anything to worry<lb/>
about anymore, it is not the time to<lb/>
let our guard down. Hurricane sea-<lb/>
son lasts from June 1-Nov. 30. Most<lb/>
hurricanes occur from the middle of<lb/>
August through the middle of<lb/>
Octoben The size and duration of<lb/>
hurricanes can vary. According to<lb/>
1 S Today, the smallest storm<lb/>
might be one hundred miles across,<lb/>
while the largest might have a cir-<lb/>
cumference of three hundred<lb/>
miles. Some hurricanes have been<lb/>
kpown to last a few hours, while<lb/>
others have lasted for more than<lb/>
two weeks.<lb/>
There are many commonly held<lb/>
beliefs about hurricanes.<lb/>
When a hurricane is coming,<lb/>
most of us shut our windows and<lb/>
cover them with tape. We do this<lb/>
because we think that the wind will<lb/>
blast in the window and blow glass<lb/>
everywhere. While this is true, the<lb/>
tape only provides some protection.<lb/>
'The Federal Emergency<lb/>
Management Agency says:<lb/>
"Permanent shutters arc the best<lb/>
protection. A lower-cost approach is<lb/>
to put up plywood panels. Use half<lb/>
inch plywood cut to fit each win-<lb/>
dow. Do this long before the<lb/>
storm<lb/>
Of course shutters and fitted<lb/>
plywood covers arc expensive.<lb/>
Another alternative is to bring<lb/>
inside any outside objects like law n<lb/>
chairs and tables. Just imagine what<lb/>
an ordinary garbage can will do at<lb/>
seventy five m.p.h. heading toward<lb/>
your house. The danger of an open<lb/>
window is that when wind gets<lb/>
inside a building, it can push the<lb/>
roof upwards and WHOOSH<lb/>
there goes your roof.<lb/>
'There is a myth that if two<lb/>
storm systems are near each other,<lb/>
they can combine to form a huge<lb/>
hurricane. This is false. If two<lb/>
storms are in the vicinity of one<lb/>
another, they will most likely weak-<lb/>
en one or both. Or they may even<lb/>
circle each other, but storms never<lb/>
hit each other. Also, most of us see<lb/>
hurricanes as the wrath of Mother<lb/>
Nature and that they just cause-<lb/>
death and destruction. While this is<lb/>
Taping windows offers little to no protection from wind during an actual hurricane.<lb/>
certainly true, hurricanes serve rhe<lb/>
beneficial purpose of bringing rain<lb/>
and ending droughts. 'Texas usually<lb/>
has a large amount of thoughts each<lb/>
year. They are usuallv ended by the<lb/>
coming of an hurricane.<lb/>
Some final warnings: During a<lb/>
storm, when the "eve" passes over,<lb/>
a calmness comes to the sky. Do<lb/>
not be fooled by this, the worst part<lb/>

Morrison said, " but 1 run the best. I<lb/>
can pick up time in that category<lb/>
It was in One of his courses that<lb/>
Morrison received his inspiration to<lb/>
run races. In 1972, Morrison taught a<lb/>
student who was a marathon runner.<lb/>
His enthusiasm was so contagious,<lb/>
Morrison decided to give it a try.<lb/>
"He was very enthusiastic about<lb/>
marathons Morrison said. "I would<lb/>
train with him for the races<lb/>
In 1980, it was another friend rhat<lb/>
convinced Morrison to get involved<lb/>
in triathlons.<lb/>
"It was a very "tijjjfrg sport then<lb/>

years<lb/>
From that moment on, Morrison<lb/>
has kept active with triathlons. I le<lb/>
said he usually does two or three<lb/>
triathlons a year, but he has already<lb/>
participated in five.<lb/>
Morrison trains extensively to<lb/>
keep himself in phenomenal shape<lb/>
to participate in these races.<lb/>
According to Morrison, his training<lb/>
involves running, cycling and swim-<lb/>

is also a member of the East Carolina<lb/>
Velo club, a bicycle organization that<lb/>
began last year on campus.<lb/>
Morrison has participated in 21<lb/>
marathons, the last one which took<lb/>
place in Charlotte, NC in 1994.<lb/>
Recently he has been training<lb/>
with 35 year old Carl Bonner, a local<lb/>
engineer who, Morrison said, is a verv<lb/>

"I le has been training to do the<lb/>

Hurricane safety myths brought to light<lb/>
'l aped windows not<lb/>

Pnil.ll' Q II. res<lb/>
STAR V, KM I H<lb/>
Win should we board up the win-<lb/>
dows during a hurricane? Is it true<lb/>
ih.it two hurricanes can combine to<lb/>
form one big oner Since all the big<lb/>
hurricanes have already happened,<lb/>
we do not have to worry about them<lb/>
.my more, right? These questions<lb/>
arid myths have conic up since<lb/>
Hurricane Bonnie, ami given the<lb/>
ictivity of other hurricanes in<lb/>
recent weeks, they arc becoming<lb/>
re and more important.<lb/>
Let's start off with the basics<lb/>
fii st: What is the difference<lb/>
between a hurricane watch and a<lb/>
hurricane warning? A watch means<lb/>
i hat storm conditions arc right for<lb/>
potentially dangerous weather.<lb/>
I luring a hurricane watch, people<lb/>
should be stocking up on cmer-<lb/>
jgehcy supplies, anil for those who<lb/>
live near the ocean, it may be the<lb/>
time ro prepare for evacuation.<lb/>
When a hurricane warning is issued.<lb/>
it means that hurricane conditions<lb/>
(a storm with winds of seventy four<lb/>
m.p.h. or greater) is expected in the<lb/>
area in twenty four hours or less. In<lb/>
the event of a warning, people<lb/>
should either evacuate or move to<lb/>
safe shelter.<lb/>
Just because Bonnie has passed<lb/>
and left everyone with the sense<lb/>
that there is not anything to worry<lb/>
about anymore, it is not the time to<lb/>
let our guard down. 1 lurricane sea-<lb/>
son lasts from June 1-Nov. 30. Most<lb/>
hurricanes occur from the middle of<lb/>
August through the middle of<lb/>
October. The size and duration of<lb/>
hurricanes can vary. According to<lb/>
USA Today, the smallest storm<lb/>
might be one hundred miles across,<lb/>
while the largest might have a cir-<lb/>
cumference of three hundred<lb/>
miles. Some hurricanes have been<lb/>
known to last a few hours, while<lb/>
others have lasted for more than<lb/>
two weeks.<lb/>
There arc many commonly held<lb/>
beliefs about hurricanes.<lb/>
When a hurricane is coming,<lb/>
most of us shut our windows and<lb/>
coyer them with tape. We do this<lb/>
because we think that the wind will<lb/>
blast in the window and blow glass<lb/>
everywhere. While this is true, the<lb/>
tape only provides some protection.<lb/>
The ? Federal Emergency<lb/>
Management Agency says:<lb/>
"Permanent shutters are the best<lb/>
protection. A lower-cost approach is<lb/>
to put up plywood panels. Use half<lb/>
inch plywood cut to fit each win-<lb/>
dow. Do this long before the<lb/>
storm<lb/>
Of course shutters and fitted<lb/>
plywood covers are expensive.<lb/>
Another alternative is to bring<lb/>
inside any outside objects like lawn<lb/>
chairs and tables. Just imagine what<lb/>
an ordinary garbage can will do at<lb/>
seventy five m.p.h. heading toward<lb/>
your house. The danger of an open<lb/>
window is that when wind gets<lb/>
inside a building, it can push the-<lb/>
reof upwards and WHOOSH<lb/>
there goes your roof.<lb/>
There is a myth that if two<lb/>
storm systems are near each other,<lb/>
they can combine to form a huge<lb/>
hurricane. This is false. If two<lb/>
storms are in the vicinity of one<lb/>
another, they will most likely weak-<lb/>
en one or both. Or they may even<lb/>
circle each other, but storms never<lb/>
hit each other. Also, most of us sec-<lb/>
hurricanes as the wrath of Mother<lb/>
Nature and that they just cause-<lb/>
death and destruction. While this is<lb/>
m<lb/>

certainly true, hurricanes serve the<lb/>
beneficial purpose of bringing rain<lb/>
and ending droughts. Texas usually<lb/>
has a large amount of droughts each<lb/>
year. They arc usually ended by the<lb/>
coming of an hurricane.<lb/>
Some final warnings: During a<lb/>
storm, when the "eye" passes over,<lb/>
a calmness comes to the sky. Do<lb/>
not be fooled by this, the worst part<lb/>
of the hurricane will occur after the<lb/>
eve moves on. Be alert of tornadoes<lb/>
which usually spawn off of hurri-<lb/>

Themes set for each home game<lb/>
Mario Schkriiai ker<lb/>
SKNIOR WRITKR<lb/>
The ECU volleyball program will have a<lb/>
different promotional theme for each home<lb/>
game to increase the public attention and<lb/>
attendance for their sport.<lb/>
Developed and conducted by the uni-<lb/>
versity's sports marketing department, the<lb/>
promotional program is aiming to fill<lb/>
Mingcs Coliseum for the upcom-<lb/>
ing home volleyball games.<lb/>
"Families, students and kids<lb/>
from Pitt County come to our<lb/>
football and basketball games,<lb/>
but many of them never saw a<lb/>
volleyball game Christopher<lb/>
Loney, assistant marketing<lb/>
director said. "If we could bring<lb/>
them out to watch a volleyba<lb/>
game, maybe they would like the sport and<lb/>
become true fans<lb/>
According to Kim Walker, head volley-<lb/>
ball coach, volleyball is a fast and exciting<lb/>
sport to watch.<lb/>
"If the arena is packed it would help the<lb/>
players as well. Knowing that they are sup-<lb/>
ported by the ECU community, they would<lb/>
gain confidence Walker said.<lb/>
The theme for today's' match against<lb/>
Hampton at 6 p.m. is the 'Boys and Girls<lb/>
Club According to Loney, all members of<lb/>
the Boys and Girls Club of Pitt County<lb/>
receive free tickets and special recognition<lb/>
during the match. The first one hundred<lb/>
fans admitted will receive small popcorn<lb/>
and soft drink complements provided by<lb/>
concession stand.<lb/>
"We are targeting our younger kids for<lb/>
today's' home game. The first<lb/>
one hundred people will also<lb/>
receive a team volleyball<lb/>
poster Loney said. "If it's a<lb/>
close game, a big crowd<lb/>
could make the difference to<lb/>
win the game<lb/>
There will also be a 'ECU<lb/>
serve it up contest' at each<lb/>
home game according to Loney.<lb/>
Ten people will be picked randomly to par-<lb/>
ticipate in a competition to hit the ball over<lb/>
the net between every 2nd and 3rd game.<lb/>
"They participants can win pizzas,<lb/>
CDs, movie tickets, T-shirts, and much<lb/>
more. There will be a total of 40 or 50 items<lb/>
on each side of the net Loney said.<lb/>
Having the youth<lb/>
involved in these activities<lb/>
is something that is very<lb/>
important to not, only<lb/>
the players and coach-<lb/>
es, but the athletic<lb/>
department as well.<lb/>
"But we want our<lb/>
younger students get<lb/>
involved in the sport,<lb/>
too Loney said.<lb/>
AH ECU students<lb/>
living in resident<lb/>
halls will be invit-<lb/>
ed to attend the<lb/>
'1st Annual<lb/>
Resident Hall's<lb/>
Night Out' on<lb/>
October 23, when<lb/>
ECU will host<lb/>
William & Mary.<lb/>
According to Loney,<lb/>
promotional activities<lb/>
for that event will<lb/>
include pizzas to the<lb/>
loudest section,<lb/>
Sections will be<lb/>
pre-selected upon<lb/>
the size of the<lb/>
dorm's and students can decorate and hang<lb/>
banners in the arena. One lucky student will<lb/>
win one month of meals at Todd Dining<lb/>
Hall.<lb/>
Other themes will include 'Family<lb/>
Night' with great family prize packages.<lb/>
The first package will include four com-<lb/>
plementary dinners and four movie<lb/>
tickets. The second pack-<lb/>
age will include a weekend<lb/>
room at Atlantic Beach,<lb/>
along with dinner for<lb/>
four. The third package<lb/>
will be four tickets to an<lb/>
ECU football game.<lb/>
"Nevertheless, the<lb/>
main goal of the program<lb/>
is that the ECU commu-<lb/>
nity will show up tonight<lb/>
and for all of the home<lb/>
games to show our purple<lb/>

Team to take on Ohio<lb/>
Bobcats this weekend<lb/>

SKMOK WRITER<lb/>
ECU will attempt to run its winning<lb/>
streak to two games this Saturday when<lb/>
the Pirates travel to Athens to take on the<lb/>
Ohio Bobcats.<lb/>
The two schools have met only once<lb/>
before, a wild 55-45 ECU victory two<lb/>
years ago in Greenville. In that game,<lb/>
ECU held a 55-24 fourth quarter lead but<lb/>
nearly saw it slip away as Ohio scored<lb/>
three straight touchdowns. Many of<lb/>
Ohio's key players from that game are still<lb/>
around. Quarterback Kareem Wilson and<lb/>
tailback Steve Hoofkin combined for<lb/>
three scores as sophomore starters in 19<lb/>
and both are back for their senior seasons.<lb/>
Ohio causes match-up problems for<lb/>
most teams because of its unique option<lb/>
offense.<lb/>
"They are a true triple option team<lb/>
head coach Steve Logan said. "It's going<lb/>
to be a different set of problems for our<lb/>
defensive unit in particular, to sit down<lb/>
and play assignment football<lb/>
Since ECU has played Ohio before,<lb/>
most players know what to expect from<lb/>
the Bobcats.<lb/>
"A number of these kids experienced<lb/>
the Ohio game, particularly the down<lb/>
four Logan said. "That's a critical ele-<lb/>
ment<lb/>
Senior linebacker Rod Coicman was<lb/>
one of those Pirates that played in the '96<lb/>
game.<lb/>
"I remember they were tough<lb/>
Coleman said of the- Bobcats. "They<lb/>
never give up. They just keep pounding<lb/>
and pounding. They never quit<lb/>
While the front seven arc somewhat<lb/>
experienced against the triple option, the<lb/>
secondary is not quite as experienced.<lb/>
Safety Kelvin Suggs saw time on defense<lb/>
against Ohio, but few others in the sec-<lb/>
ondary did.<lb/>
"It's going to be a whole new deal<lb/>
Logan said.<lb/>
Senior safety Kendrick Phillips played<lb/>
only on special teams the last time these<lb/>
teams met. He says that his role will prob-<lb/>
ably change this week.<lb/>
"I think I'll be moved up closer to the<lb/>
line of scrimmage Phillips said. Thai<lb/>
way we'll have more players for the run<lb/>
On offense, ECU will try to take-<lb/>
advantage of Ohio's small secondary with<lb/>
taller wideouts LaMont Chappell and<lb/>
Troy Smith. No player in the Bobcat sec-<lb/>
ondary is taller than $'11, Logan says Ohio<lb/>
could cause trouble with its attacking<lb/>
defense.<lb/>
"It's called a 30 defense Logan said.<lb/>

Four Pirate athletes to<lb/>
receive honor for 1998<lb/>
Eric Cop cm<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
On Oct. 31, four former Pirate athletes will<lb/>
be honored as the 1998 inductees into the<lb/>
ECU Hall of Fame.<lb/>
The inductees this year are Earnest<lb/>
Byner, Bob Maynard, Dr. Raymond<lb/>
Pennington, and Dave Thomas. During<lb/>
the halftime show of the Houston football<lb/>
game, a special presentation will take place<lb/>
in theifhonor.<lb/>
"These are four of F)CU's finest said<lb/>
Associate Athletic Director Henry VanSant.<lb/>
The halftime show will cap off the Hall<lb/>
of Fame Weekend that will be taking place<lb/>
die weekend of October 30-31. The day<lb/>
before the game there will be a golf tourna-<lb/>
ment and banquet in honor of the Hall of<lb/>
F'amers and Letterwinners.<lb/>
The four Hall of Fame inductees are<lb/>
football standouts in the history of Pirate<lb/>
football. Among these four, two of them<lb/>
were two-sport athletes.<lb/>
From 1980-1983, Byner played as a full-<lb/>
back for the Pirates, rushing for over 2,000<lb/>
yards in his college career before starting a<lb/>
career in the NFL with the Cleveland<lb/>
Browns.<lb/>
Byner was invited to the Pro Bowl in<lb/>
1990 and 1991, and has rushed for over<lb/>
7,000 yards in his NFL career. After 14 sea-<lb/>
1<lb/>
sons and membership to 3 teams, Byner is<lb/>
now working in the office for the Baltimore<lb/>
Ravens.<lb/>
Maynard was on the Pirate football team<lb/>
and ran track from 1954-1958. He now<lb/>
lives in Raleigh after retiring from the John<lb/>
Deere Company where he resumed the<lb/>
position of vice president and general man-<lb/>
ager. Maynard now is working with the<lb/>
Amadas company out of Georgia.<lb/>
This honor is one that means much to<lb/>
Maynard.<lb/>
"It's fantastic he said.<lb/>
Pennington was another two-sport star<lb/>
as a football and baseball player from 1953-<lb/>
1957. While being named to the Dean's<lb/>
List, Pennington managed to make all-con-<lb/>
ference for two years and was co-captain in<lb/>
his senior season for the football team.<lb/>
Pennington is now a professor of physical<lb/>
