Trustees get<lb />
pouring bids<lb />
Exclusive soft drink<lb />
rigits still undecided<lb />
TK Jones<lb />
ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR<lb />
The bids are in, but the battle is<lb />
not yet over.<lb />
Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola, cur-<lb />
rently sold together on campus, are<lb />
seeking exclusive rights to sell<lb />
their products noncompetitively,<lb />
offering bids to achieve the<lb />
monopoly.<lb />
Pepsi offered $7 million while<lb />
Coke offered $3.93 million to have<lb />
their products alone promoted on<lb />
campus for a 10-year period.<lb />
Though the figures vary greatly,<lb />
they do not suggest an obvious<lb />
winner. While Pepsi gave only one<lb />
bid, that for the 10-year contract,<lb />
Coke offered three additional bids<lb />
under shorter contracts.<lb />
1 The evaluations committee<lb />
determined the net present value<lb />
of each drink, finding Pepsi's mon-<lb />
etary net value is $5.8 million, and<lb />
Coke at $2.7 million.<lb />
"In terms of net value only,<lb />
Pepsi has the more attractive<lb />
offer said Layton Getisinger,<lb />
associate vice chancellor of admin-<lb />
istration and finance.<lb />
"Entering into an exclusive<lb />
arrangement is something the<lb />
board has yet to decide<lb />
Getsinger said.<lb />
But, if the board decides to<lb />
have an exclusive soft drink served<lb />
on campus and at university func-<lb />
tions, then ECU will not only be<lb />
the first in the UNC system, but<lb />
the first school in the state to have<lb />
this sort of contract.<lb />
The board of trustees will<lb />
decide the stipulations of arrange-<lb />
ments with either company after<lb />
they have voted on whether to<lb />
accept either of the offers in their<lb />
July 17 meeting. The university<lb />
has the option of rejecting both the<lb />
proposals.<lb />
One challenging factor for the<lb />
committee is to determine how<lb />
much of the bids represents funds<lb />
above and beyond what the uni-<lb />
versity would receive from the<lb />
combined current soft drink con-<lb />
tracts. Currently soft drinks are<lb />
available in dining halls, snack<lb />
bars, athletic events and vending<lb />
machines.<lb />
Though it might sound unusual<lb />
for only one company to hold<lb />
exclusive control over an area, it<lb />
isn't unheard of. Exclusive rights<lb />
are also contracted out in dining<lb />
services and housekeeping.<lb />
While it is still undecided as to<lb />
what to use the proceeds for, uni-<lb />
versity officials have suggested<lb />
earmarking it for academic and<lb />
athletic scholarships.<lb />

Year 2000 brings anticipated computer<lb />
problems to university systems<lb />
Information technology systems<lb />
must be replaced<lb />
Debbie Neuwirth<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
New Year's Eve 1999 will usher in a new mille-<lb />
nium as well as a host of computer problems<lb />
anticipated to affect everything from elevators<lb />
to telephone systems on campus.<lb />
Don Dunlap of Computer Information<lb />
Systems said ECU is in good shape compared to<lb />
other universities in solving the computer prob-<lb />
lems. Years ago computer memory was very<lb />
expensive, and when used for programming,<lb />
years and dates were abbreviated. As a result,<lb />
when the years 2000 and 2001 come around,<lb />
mainframes will be confused and the computers<lb />
will not know how to read them.<lb />
In 1993 and 1994, Computer Information<lb />
Services (CIS) redid the student systems. This<lb />
includes the registrative admissions and finan-<lb />
cial aid. Few problems are expected in these<lb />
areas because they have been brought to atten-<lb />
tion early on. However, information technolo-<lb />
gy, such as computers and telephone systems,<lb />
operate by computer chips in the hardware<lb />
which will need to be replaced.<lb />
"There are 50 months left of programming<lb />
effort Dunlap said.<lb />
Everything will be done in time, Dunlap<lb />
said. He added that personal computers are the<lb />
main problem now. This problem can be reme-<lb />
died by checking the software for these databas-<lb />
es. Through much work and coordination, per-<lb />
sonal computers will be worked on from now<lb />
through January, and mainframes by the end of<lb />
the year.<lb />
Richard Kerns, assistant dean for computer<lb />
services in the School of Business, said because<lb />
the efforts to fix the problem started in 1994,<lb />
that led off to a good start.<lb />
"It is unpredictable to think we have covered<lb />
everything Kerns said.<lb />
Computer equipment is very expensive, but<lb />
the turnover rate is very fast. Computer<lb />
Services and CIS are spreading their help to the<lb />
entire university to fix the computer problems.<lb />

1. ECU received a cutback of $1.2<lb />
million, the second highest cutback out-<lb />
side of Chapel Hill. Why do you think<lb />
ECU has been shortchanged in the<lb />
UNC-sys tern's ads?<lb />
I am nbt certain, but I am going<lb />
to find but. ECU has always been<lb />
on the short end of the stick, but I<lb />
will continue to fight for East<lb />
Carolina and this region to make<lb />
sure we receive our share.<lb />
2. Do you foresee any money allo-<lb />
rdterl for road expansion in Pitt<lb />
County?<lb />
Yes. Pitt County is a growing<lb />
area with a vibrant economy. We<lb />
have a high quality of life which is<lb />
making the Greenville area an<lb />
attractive place to raise a family,<lb />
(toad money will come.<lb />
3. What can you do to bring in new<lb />
industry?<lb />
Continue to work on legislation<lb />
that will enhance our children's<lb />
education. We must make certain<lb />
our children will be able to com-<lb />
pete in the global economy of the<lb />
21st century. We must also better<lb />
train and educate our work force so<lb />
that we will attract good, high pay-<lb />
ing, high-tech jobs. In addition,<lb />
government should get out of the<lb />
way and let the free market flour-<lb />
ish.<lb />
4. How do you feel about the<lb />
Legislature's decision regarding death<lb />
row?<lb />
The bill did away with a death<lb />
row inmate's choice between<lb />
death by gas or by lethal injection.<lb />
Now, lethal injection is the only<lb />
option. We did away with cyanide<lb />
gas because of safety reasons for<lb />
prison medical staff.<lb />
5. How does the delay in candidate<lb />
choice for the state House affect your<lb />
campaign?<lb />
None whatsoever. My cam-<lb />
paigning will be the same regard-<lb />
less of my opponent. I am the con-<lb />
servative, pro-family, less govern-<lb />
ment candidate.<lb />
6. What can be done with the<lb />
Global TransPark now that it has lost<lb />
Federal Express?<lb />
The loss of Federal Express to<lb />
the Triad was not good news. We<lb />
will continue to fight for the<lb />
TransPark. I am not convinced<lb />
that it is time to give up on the<lb />

I. ECU received a cutback of $1.2<lb />
million, the second highest cutback out-<lb />
side of Chapel Hill. Why do you think<lb />
ECU has been shortchanged in the<lb />
UNC-sys tern's cuts?<lb />
My husband and I are both<lb />
graduates of ECU, and we have a<lb />
son who is a senior there. I will<lb />
work vigorously to increase alloca-<lb />
tions for ECU in the future.<lb />
2. Do you foresee any money allo-<lb />

County?<lb />
Yes. When I am elected to the<lb />
Legislature, I will work with the<lb />
leadership in the General<lb />
Assembly and the governor to see<lb />
that Pitt County gets its fair share<lb />
of the allocation of funds.<lb />
3. What can you do to bring in new<lb />
industry?<lb />
Money magazine recently<lb />
ranked Greenville as one of the<lb />
top 15 small southern cities to live<lb />
in. Using criteria such as econom-<lb />
ics, education and housing,<lb />
Greenville ranked in the top 8 per-<lb />
cent for its forecasted job growth<lb />
to 2002. I will strongly support any<lb />
efforts<lb />
to encourage industrial growth<lb />
in eastern North Carolina.<lb />
4. How do you feel about the<lb />
Legislature's decision regarding death<lb />
row?<lb />
The House voted 99-6 on June<lb />
9 to make lethal injection the only<lb />
option available for inmates on<lb />
death row. It is predicted that the<lb />
Senate will pass the bill also.<lb />
5. How does the delay in candidate<lb />
choice for the state House affect your<lb />
campaign?<lb />
The only way it affects my cam-<lb />
paign is perhaps in name recogni-<lb />
tion, because my name was not on<lb />
the ballot during the primary.<lb />
The campaign is fully opera-<lb />
tional, and I am excited about<lb />
being the Democratic nominee for<lb />
the 9th District state house seat.<lb />
6. What can be done with the<lb />
Global TransPark now that it has lost<lb />
Federal Express?<lb />
I was disappointed that<lb />
FEDEX did not choose Kinston<lb />
for its new operation; however, I<lb />
still believe that the TransPark is a<lb />
valuable idea. There will be other<lb />
opportunities. We should be<lb />
patient, and we should be realistic.<lb />

Lawmakers press for<lb />
sexual harassment law<lb />
RALEIGH (AP) For decades it<lb />
has been the subject of countless<lb />
court battles and headlines, yet<lb />
nowhere in North Carolina law can<lb />
be found the words "sexual harass-<lb />
ment<lb />
State lawmakers have vowed to<lb />
change that this year after the<lb />
State Personnel Commission ruled<lb />
it could not help a former state<lb />
employee despite evidence sexual<lb />
harassment by her supervisor had<lb />
created "a hostile work environ-<lb />
ment<lb />
Even so, lawmakers disagree<lb />
over how state law currently<lb />
addresses the complicated issue of<lb />
sexual harassment and what<lb />
changes are needed. Equally<lb />
uncertain is whether the push to<lb />
clarify the law will become lost in a<lb />
partisan political struggle.<lb />
"I just saw this as a nonpartisan<lb />
issue that we needed to correct<lb />
said Rep. Leo Daughtry, R-<lb />
Johnston, who has sponsored a<lb />
plan to rewrite state law to clearly<lb />
prohibit sexual harassment of state<lb />
employees. "Both the Democrats<lb />
and the Republicans worked<lb />
together to find a way to swiftly<lb />
address it<lb />
Still, the plan by Daughtry, a<lb />
likely Republican gubernatorial<lb />
hopeful in 2000, has become a<lb />
political football despite assur-<lb />
ances from Senate Democrats that<lb />
they will act on the issue.<lb />
The Senate voted down the bill<lb />
Wednesday, less than a week after<lb />
first rejecting it as "not germane<lb />
Senators have admitted their origi-<lb />
nal decision to reject the plan was<lb />
payback for House leaders reject-<lb />
ing as "not germane" a campaign<lb />
finance reform plan packaged in a<lb />
stripped-down House bill that was<lb />
sent to the Senate last year.<lb />
Daughtry's plan was packaged<lb />
in a stripped-down Senate bill sent<lb />
to the House.<lb />
Sen. Leslie Winner, D-<lb />
Mecklenburg, says the latest "no"<lb />
vote on Daughtry's plan had noth-<lb />
ing to do with political gamesman-<lb />
ship, but with giving the entire<lb />
issue careful consideration.<lb />
Most important, she said, is<lb />
clarifying what state law currently<lb />
says regarding sexual harassment<lb />
and whether the State Personnel<lb />
Commission was correct in its rul-<lb />
ing.<lb />
"First of all, it's not clear to me<lb />
that the State Personnel<lb />
Commissioninterpretation was<lb />
correct Winner said in an inter-<lb />
view last week. "The attorney<lb />
general does have some concerns<lb />
about it. I think we ought to hear<lb />
some concerns about it<lb />
The attorney general's office<lb />
has not issued a formal opinion on<lb />
Daughtry's plan, but officials there<lb />
are studying the changes and<lb />
expect to issue an opinion next<lb />
week.<lb />
Although state law does not<lb />
specifically mention sexual harass-<lb />
ment, it does prohibit sex discrim-<lb />
ination. Among the definitions of<lb />
sex discrimination included in<lb />
Office of State Personnel regula-<lb />
tions is the creation of an "intimi-<lb />
dating, hostile or offensive work-<lb />
ing environment<lb />
State law also prohibits retalia-<lb />
tion or threats against state<lb />
employees who report "a violation<lb />
of state or federal law, rule or regu-<lb />
lation<lb />
Still, most state employees in<lb />
the past had sought relief from<lb />
sexual harassment either through<lb />
the courts or through the federal<lb />
Equal Employment Opportunity<lb />
Commission, which has specific<lb />
prohibitions against both "quid<lb />
pro quo harassment" and creation<lb />
of "a hostile work environment<lb />
Computer<lb />
continued from page 1<lb />
Break<lb />
continued from page 1<lb />
Even though there are intense<lb />
changes in mainframes, most of<lb />
the work on them have been com-<lb />
pleted. Leon Gipson of CIS feels<lb />
most labs on campus should be<lb />
2000 compliant. He believes that<lb />
most of the problem is with the<lb />
personal computers and the<lb />
servers, but they are currently<lb />
being identified by individual<lb />
departments. "We are well coordi-<lb />
nated in our efforts, so we know<lb />
what we are looking for Gipson<lb />
said.<lb />
At this time, Computer Services<lb />
and CIS are looking at what is not<lb />
compliant. Then the decision to<lb />
replace or surplus equipment is<lb />
made. There are 543 days left until<lb />
the year 2000, and compared to<lb />
other universities, ECU is well on<lb />
their way to attacking the problem.<lb />
Senate. "There are also a number<lb />
of ex-officio members, without<lb />
vote, representing Academic<lb />
Affairs, Student Life, Business<lb />
Affairs and the Registrar<lb />
When deciding on breaks, the<lb />
Calendar Committee must look at<lb />
many different angles, including<lb />
the space of time between the reg-<lb />
ular semesters.<lb />
"Not being privy to the discus-<lb />
sions the committee might have<lb />
had relative to the one day break<lb />
between summer sessions, I can<lb />
only surmise that the number of<lb />
days available between the two<lb />
regular semesters is a major factor<lb />
in their decision Sexauer said.<lb />
After the calendar had been<lb />
decided it must be approved by<lb />
the Faculty Senate and the<lb />
Chancellor.<lb />
"The calendars for fall and<lb />
spring and both sessions are devel-<lb />
oped by the Calendar Committee<lb />
of the Faculty Senate Sexauer<lb />
said. "The committee submits its<lb />
report to the Faculty Senate for<lb />
discussion and possible amend-<lb />
ment. The report is sent to the<lb />
chancellor for final approval<lb />
Though students may feel<lb />
overwhelmed with only a one day<lb />
break, departments on campus<lb />
have not had a problem with it<lb />
According to Michael Balko,<lb />
director of housing, there has not<lb />
been a problem getting students in<lb />
and out of the residence halls in<lb />
only one day.<lb />
Rose Mary Stelma, director of<lb />
financial aid, said there have been<lb />
no concerns or adjustments made<lb />
and all has worked out as usual in<lb />
financial aid.<lb />
Calendars have been approved<lb />
by the Calendar Committee<lb />
through spring semester 2001.<lb />
Bomb<lb />
continued from page 1<lb />
hospitals safety.<lb />
"The in house police force is<lb />
being extra vigilant to keep eyes<lb />
open for suspicious behavior and<lb />
characters Former said. "The<lb />
main thing we do is turn it over to<lb />
the proper authorities<lb />
Cpl. William Harris of the<lb />
Greenville Police said it appears<lb />
the letter was written by someone<lb />
who is upset by the hospital's trans-<lb />
fer to privatization.<lb />
Hospital privatization took place<lb />
June 1, despite extreme public<lb />
opposition. The author apparently<lb />
felt the hospital had been stolen<lb />
from him or her.<lb />
Once the Greenville Police<lb />
Department is involved, it is their<lb />
responsibility to bring in other<lb />
authorities, such as the State<lb />
Bureau of Investigation and the<lb />
Federal Bureau of Investigation, if<lb />
needed.<lb />
Harris said that at this point the<lb />
Greenville Police Department is<lb />
assisting the hospital and the SBI <lb />
has assisted the Greenville Police,<lb />
but the Greenville Police are run- '<lb />
ning the investigation.<lb />
Harris was unable to comment<lb />
on any leads in the investigation :<lb />
except that they are asking anyone<lb />
with leads to please call Crime<lb />

Are all of the departments wired with the same sources of information?<lb />
According to Computing and Information Systems (CIS) they are. But if<lb />
this is the case, then why is it possible for a student enrolled full-time in<lb />
the spring and fall semesters, but not taking any summer classes, to have<lb />
access to certain facilities and not others? Or, should we say, not without<lb />
a fee.<lb />
Anyone with a One Card indicating they had attended the previous<lb />
semester can use the library's facilities without any questions. But try to<lb />
use that same card to get into the Student Recreation Center over the<lb />
summer and you won't make it past the front door without paying an<lb />
additional $30, the same fee charged to faculty.<lb />
The cashier's office said the bottom line is that anyone not paying for a<lb />
session of classes technically should not be able to use anything that<lb />
would normally be funded through the university fees even when the<lb />
computer shows the student is enrolled for the next semester but each<lb />
entity can come up with their own rules.<lb />
So, question the library about their act of kindness in extending their<lb />
privileges a few weeks through the summer and thev will tell you so lone<lb />
as you re enrolled in the tall, there's not a problem.<lb />
Another service provided throughout the summer is Student Health.<lb />
You can still purchase medicine and see health care providers at a fraction<lb />
of what independent medical practices charge, again, so long as you're<lb />
enrolled in the fall. ,<lb />
And the computer lab in Mendenhall? Not a problem, just show your<lb />
card so they'll know you're enrolled for fall.<lb />
The rec center, on the other hand, said if you aren't currently taking<lb />
classes, then you can't use the facilities unless you pay. Aren't we already<lb />
paying with the increase in tuition? Whose building is it anyway? And<lb />
who are they to be the ones on campus to refuse to give student dis-<lb />
counts?<lb />
OPINION<lb />
Columnist<lb />
Jeff<lb />
BERGMAN<lb />
Liberal is in eyes of beholder<lb />
Opinion columnists are the<lb />
only part of the media<lb />
I view as having a decisive<lb />
liberal or conservative slant.<lb />
Not all opinion columnists<lb />
are liberal.<lb />
According to conservatives, the<lb />
media industry is run by a bunch of<lb />
bleeding heart liberals. We 'tree-<lb />
huggers' put our personal left-wing<lb />
slant on everything from political<lb />
races to the problems in the world.<lb />
I believe this about as much as I<lb />
think the sound of a chainsaw rip-<lb />
ping through an old growth forest is<lb />
music.<lb />
Opinion columnists are the only<lb />
part of the media I view as having a<lb />
decisive liberal or conservative<lb />
slant. Not all opinion columnists are<lb />
liberal. Opinion columnist Walter<lb />
Williams is about as much of a left-<lb />
of-center Democrat as Ronald<lb />
Reagan was an actor.<lb />
Suppose the media were one-<lb />
sided; explain why we have a<lb />
Republican controlled congress.<lb />
The standard answer for that ques-<lb />
tion is the voters saw through the<lb />
many years of lies by the media and<lb />
voted in a much-needed conserva-<lb />
tive voice in government. The<lb />
Republican explanation is devoid<lb />
of good sense.<lb />
In 19 Bill Clinton won the<lb />
presidency again. Throughout that<lb />
year the media reported on<lb />
Clinton's supposed sexual impro-<lb />
prieties. The voting public still put<lb />
the man back into office. The fuzzy<lb />
logic that right-wing individuals<lb />
claim is the explanation would<lb />
assume that two years after the so-<lb />
called '94 revolution, we, the public<lb />
lost a few IQ points.<lb />
If the media were as liberal as<lb />
many claim then explain to me why<lb />
the reporting of Clinton's sex life is<lb />
front page. Meanwhile, Phil<lb />
Gramm's dumping of a few thou-<lb />
sand into a T&A flick goes unre-<lb />
ported except by the extreme<lb />
liberal Al Franken.<lb />
Sure the news is liberal. That<lb />
explains why hundreds of reporters<lb />
are trying to infiltrate Nike plants<lb />
around the globe to see if children<lb />
are being exploited. Note to nar-<lb />
row-minded individuals: the<lb />
reporters are in Washington right<lb />
now, covering the oh-so-important,<lb />
"If Air-Force One is a-rockin don't<lb />
come a knockin<lb />
Yeah, we are all a bunch of hip-<lb />
pie liberals, trying to influence peo-<lb />
ple. If that is the case, we have<lb />
failed as miserably as the Bay of<lb />
Pigs. The liberals in the media sure<lb />
have done a great job: Health-Care<lb />
reform failed miserably and welfare<lb />
for the poor has been cut, while<lb />
welfare for the rich is rarely men-<lb />
tioned.<lb />

Freebies have hidden cost<lb />
Even if I know it's crap I<lb />
want it if it's free. <lb />
but nothing is ever truly<lb />
free unless you steal it.<lb />
There's something about the word<lb />
"free" that drives a girl insane.<lb />
Even if it's not really free. As long<lb />
as it says so, I'm hooked. Like "buy<lb />
one, get one free You're not get-<lb />
ting a freaking thing for free,<lb />
buddy.<lb />
I'm a sucker for something that<lb />
is free. If anything comes in the<lb />
mail say, for instance, an offer for<lb />
seven free CDs (which will actually<lb />
cost about forty bucks in shipping<lb />
charges) I'm all over it like a<lb />
soggy diaper. Never mind that sign-<lb />
ing up for the "club" means being<lb />
hounded by a neverending barrage<lb />
of postcards and obligations and<lb />
resigning your personal taste in<lb />
music to a corporate conglomerate<lb />
who will now saturate vou with sub-<lb />
liminal messages directing you to<lb />
buy Nikes and Kathie Lee Gifford-<lb />
wear, thus supporting their lack of<lb />
adherence to the child labor laws<lb />
and the endless cycle of poverty in<lb />
Guatemala. All because the enve-<lb />
lope said "Free<lb />
The saddest part (well, aside<lb />
from the starving Guatemalan chil-<lb />
dren in sweat shops) is that as we all<lb />
know, I no longer own a CD player<lb />
(thanks to our marvelous system of<lb />
justice that lets burglars out for<lb />
"good behavior"). Yet I still signed<lb />
up for the BMG deal. Now that's<lb />
skillful marketing. Columbia<lb />
House also sucked me in like a gold<lb />
chain- wearing, chest hair-looking-<lb />
like-taco meat pimp downtown on a<lb />
Saturday night. I still owe them my<lb />
first born child.<lb />
You know what gets me every<lb />
time? When they throw in the Mini<lb />
Super Duper Thingie Bopper for<lb />
free with your purchase of a Super-<lb />
Super Duper Thingie Bopper on<lb />
the infomercials. I mean, it slices,<lb />
dices, mows the lawn, milks the<lb />
cow, and makes a wonderful center-<lb />
piece for any dinner party and<lb />
the Mini Thingie is lightweight for<lb />
traveling! Now who could pass that<lb />
up? Not me.<lb />
Even if I know it's crap I want it<lb />
 if it's free. I signed up for 15<lb />
credit cards last year solely for the<lb />
T-shirts. I buy books at UBE just<lb />
for the packet of deodorant, mouth-<lb />
wash and cough syrup. In the end I<lb />
spend more money trying to get the<lb />
free stuff than I would have origi-<lb />
nally.<lb />
There must be some sort of psy-<lb />
. chological connection between the<lb />
idea of a freebie and the euphoric<lb />
feeling of triumph. I always feel<lb />
like I've beaten the man as he<lb />
walks away with my money and a<lb />
grin and I stand there with a dorky<lb />
smile and a handful of crap. But it<lb />
was buy one poo, get the second<lb />

truly free unless you steal it.<lb />

pier than the stuff at the gro-<lb />
cery store and park our cars<lb />
so far away <lb />
While I was helping my sister<lb />
Lauren move into Fletcher Hall on<lb />
Sunday for her technology camp, I<lb />
took a short trip back down<lb />
Memory Lane. It's been about a<lb />
year since I loaded all my stuff into<lb />
my beat -up '85 Ford Ranger and<lb />
made my first trip to ECU. I<lb />
remember making several trips to<lb />
get all my junk into my room in<lb />
Jones Hall, where it was arranged in<lb />
its usual disorderly manner. I also<lb />
remember meeting a bunch of peo-<lb />
ple who were pretty interesting and<lb />
seemed pretty nice.<lb />
Then I met the resident assis-<lb />
tants. My RA Brian was a pretty<lb />
cool guy. He wasn't a jerk, and<lb />
would generally leave you be. But 1<lb />
know a lot of people whose RAs arc<lb />
real nut cases. I really wasn't into<lb />
having someone who is my age<lb />
putting all sorts of rules on me that<lb />
not even my Mom would force<lb />
upon me. Of course, we got away<lb />
with murder. Cold beer was easier<lb />
to get than hot water. Everybody<lb />
knew somebody with a bong in the<lb />
closet. I don't know why the dorms<lb />
aren't run like an apartment com-<lb />
plex. You're an adult. If you want to<lb />
drink a beer in your home, then<lb />
why should ECU send its moral<lb />
crusaders to give you a ticket? They<lb />
could care less about the drinking;<lb />
they just want any extra money that<lb />
they don't have to earn.<lb />
Another sketchy area: visitation.<lb />
For some ungodly reason, ECU<lb />
won't let you stay in your friend's or<lb />
girlfriend or boyfriend's room after<lb />
2 a.m. I remember going to N.C,<lb />
State to see a friend of mine in his<lb />
dorm and we stayed all weekend,<lb />
because obviously State isn't.on a<lb />
big power trip over their dorms.<lb />
And their dorms are better than<lb />
ours. Half of our dorms are so old<lb />
and dilapidated; I had a nicer place<lb />
to live when I was in Army basic<lb />
training! Heck, some floors on<lb />
White Hall look like they filmed<lb />
Armageddon there!<lb />
Then there is food and parking.<lb />
No kitchens mean you have to eat<lb />
at the dining halls, which are<lb />
crowded and serve fattening pseu-<lb />
do-laxatives. Then parking is a joke<lb />
everywhere. The extra $96 for a lit-<lb />
tle moronic sticker was the decid-<lb />
ing factor on me not returning to<lb />
the dorms. Heck, I always have<lb />
parking at the apartment and it's<lb />
free!<lb />
And Traffic and Parking is<lb />
always out to make a dishonest<lb />
buck. If you are a cashier or a ticket<lb />
writer, when we come in to pay the<lb />
fine, it takes everything we have<lb />
not to smack you in the face.<lb />
So basically, we hated having<lb />
someone other than our parents<lb />
boss us around, make us live in<lb />
accomodations worse than our room<lb />
at home, eat food trappier than the<lb />
stuff at the grocery store and park<lb />
our cars so far away that we have to<lb />
ride a bus to get there. No wonder<lb />
we like apartments so much. Our<lb />
freshman year of college was worse<lb />

The Wandering Eyes are an Austin,<lb />

Patriotic music was on the bill of fare<lb />
Sunday night when the Greenville Choral<lb />
Society performed in the Town<lb />
Commons amphitheater for a picnicking<lb />
crowd of Greenville residents as part of<lb />
the annual Sunday in the Park concert<lb />
series.<lb />
Six ECU School of Music students,<lb />
along with faculty member George<lb />
Broussard, accompanied the Society dur-<lb />
ing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic<lb />
Older citizens clapped along to old-<lb />
fashioned gospel favorites and veterans<lb />
were asked to stand for a special musical<lb />
salute.<lb />
The concert was part of an anniversary<lb />
celebration for Sunday in the Park, a<lb />
Greenville tradition for 25 years.<lb />
Young adults fondly remember grow-<lb />
ing up with Sunday in the Park as part of<lb />
their summers, and even non-residents<lb />
enjoy the cultural benefits of the series.<lb />
Mary Robinette, from east<lb />
Tennessee, attended her third concert<lb />
of the season on Sunday. Asked which<lb />
has been her favorite, she replied, "I<lb />
liked this one better my daughter<lb />
and grandson were in it<lb />
Stewart Aronson has been praised<lb />
highly for creating, developing and<lb />
nursing Sunday in the Park through its<lb />
first 25 years. "He is the true spirit of<lb />
Sunday in the Park said a resident<lb />
who did not wish to be named.<lb />
Aronson came to Greenville to work<lb />
with the ECU Summer Theater program,<lb />
one of the few cultural resources available<lb />
to residents during the summer. In the<lb />
summer of 1974 the Summer Theater<lb />
went on hiatus, creating a potential for<lb />
cultural stagnation for residents who had<lb />
come to depend on the theater for quality<lb />
entertainment.<lb />
As a direet result of a conversation<lb />
between Aronson and Boyd Lee, then<lb />
director of Greenville Parks and<lb />
Recreation, the first concert was held that<lb />
June in a sunken kudzu-encrusted field at<lb />
the junction of Third and Fourth streets<lb />
with Readc, near what is now the fresh-<lb />

The field, surrounded by high earth<lb />
walls, was a natural amphitheater and pro-<lb />
vided space for families to spread their<lb />
blankets and listen to bands outside,<lb />
which became a popular way to spend a<lb />
summer Sunday night.<lb />
The first season of Sunday in the Park<lb />
was a success. "We've been doing it ever<lb />

Sunday's program, acting as Master of<lb />

First of three l40s classics<lb />
for summer season<lb />
Stephanie Russell<lb />
THEATER REVIEWER<lb />
The East Carolina Summer Theatre has<lb />
once again created magic in McGinnis.<lb />
This season, a celebration of the theater of<lb />
the fabulous forties, opened with the<lb />
Rodgers and Hammerstein classic,<lb />
Oklahoma<lb />
Set in the mid-western frontier before<lb />
Oklahoma was a state, the play is a story<lb />
about people and the land they love. As a<lb />
sort of romantic comedy musical of the<lb />
times, there are love triangles, affairs of the<lb />
heart, and plain, good old-fashioned cow-<lb />
boy games.<lb />
Steven Edward Moore shines as Curly, a<lb />
cowboy with a heart of gold. Moore belts<lb />
out such classics as "Oh, What a Beautiful<lb />
Morning" and "People Will Say We're in<lb />
Love" with tremendous zeal and enormous<lb />
talent. His voice is perfectly suited to the<lb />
romantic cowboy he portrays. Moore<lb />
brings Curly to life in all of his rugged <lb />
and gentle splendor.<lb />
Laurey, the love interest of Curly and<lb />
Jud Frye, is played by Alayna Hamilton.<lb />
Hamilton, an alumnae of East Carolina,<lb />
makes a triumphant return to the<lb />
McGinnis stage in this outstanding produc-<lb />
tion. She can sing, dance, and actwhat<lb />
more could you possibly need to star in a<lb />
musical? Maybe stage presence and chem-<lb />
istry with your fellow actors, both of which<lb />
Hamilton has in abundance.<lb />
These two are supported by an equally<lb />
talented cast, all of whom make Oklahoma!<lb />
the huge success that it is. James Darrah<lb />
(Will Parker) and Nicole Fenstad (Ado<lb />
Annie) almost steal the show. Both are<lb />
incredible singers and actors. Fenstad's<lb />
rendition of "I Cain't Say No is hilarious,<lb />
thanks in part to her amazing comic timing<lb />
that shows itself throughout the show.<lb />
John Darrow, Walter Shoen, and Patch<lb />
Clark (Jud Frye, Ali Hakem and Aunt<lb />
Filler, respectively) provide further fabu-<lb />
lous support. These three are as important<lb />
to the overall success of the show as any of<lb />
the lead characters. From serious drama to<lb />
sarcastic humor, Darrow, Shoen and Clark<lb />
know how to do it all!<lb />
Unbelievable choreography from David<lb />
Wanstreet showed off the talents of a<lb />
remarkable ensemble. All cast members<lb />
were integral parts of the show, singing and<lb />
dancing their way into the heart of the<lb />
action and the audience. The vocal<lb />
direction of Mort Stine and the orchestra,<lb />
under the direction of Dr. Douglas<lb />
Morrison, were a further delight.<lb />
Costuming by Jeffery Phipps and scenery<lb />
by Robert C. Alpers, were, as always,<lb />
absolutely wonderful.<lb />
You may have missed your chance to see<lb />
a Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic of<lb />
Broadway. The East Carolina Summer<lb />
Theatre '98 has done a remarkable produc-<lb />
tion of Oklahoma Don't miss the opportu-<lb />

forties. Blithe Spirit, a farcical comedy by<lb />
Noel Coward, started yesterday and runs<lb />

Do the novels of any pop writer make bet-<lb />
ter movies than those of Elmore Leonard?<lb />
I suppose the high brows in the crowd<lb />
could point to Jane Austen and get little<lb />
argument (since so few of the rest of us<lb />
have seen the flicks based on her books),<lb />
but one look at the trailers is enough to<lb />
show that these cinematic tea parties are<lb />
not exploiting the medium to its full poten-<lb />
tial.<lb />
Movies, whatever their inherent faults<lb />
(see Armageddon if you need reminding),<lb />
are most effective when showing lives, not<lb />
manners, in peril.<lb />
Hubba Hubba and George get cozy.<lb />
PHOTO COURTESY OF UNIVERSAL PICTURES<lb />
And Leonard's strength is making us<lb />
care about these lives. How does he do it?<lb />
Why do we like Get Shorty's Chili Palmer,<lb />
Jackie Brown's Jackie Brown, and the gang<lb />
of robbers and accomplices<lb />
in Out of Sight?<lb />
While I could give you<lb />
all sorts of crap about<lb />
Leonard's ability to endow<lb />
his characters with humani-<lb />
ty and about his special tal-<lb />
ent for realistic dialogue,<lb />
that would not be entirely<lb />
true. You want these char-<lb />
acters to live mainly<lb />
because they are so enter-<lb />
taining.<lb />
Avoiding the bullets will<lb />
permit them to continue<lb />
pulling off their schemes<lb />
and saying funny things.<lb />
The dialogue in these<lb />
movies (especially Out of<lb />
Sigfit) is too witty to be real-<lb />
istic. One priceless bit has a<lb />
car thief arguing that he<lb />
couldn't possibly be steal-<lb />
ing the car he is seen trying<lb />
to hotwire because he had<lb />
already stolen it a week ago.<lb />
As to the actual story,<lb />
Out of Sight, directed by<lb />
Stephen Soderbergh, has<lb />
all of the by-now familiar<lb />
Leonard elements: hidden loot, double-<lb />
crosses, and games of criminal one-upman-<lb />
ship.<lb />
George Clooney plays Jack, a chronic<lb />
t<lb />
bank robber, and plays him well. Gone are<lb />
many of the annoying tendencies he com-<lb />
mits each week on ER. For once, he does<lb />
not look like one of those bobbinhead<lb />
dolls from the ESPN baseball commercials.<lb />
Jack breaks out of jail with help from<lb />
Buddy (Ving Rhamcs, being his usual bad-<lb />
ass self). FBI agent Karen Sisco, played by<lb />
hubba-hubba Jennifer Lopez, spots them<lb />
and attempts to intercede, only to be dis-<lb />
armed and thrown in the trunk with Jack.<lb />
They talk about movies as if they're on<lb />
their first date, while he drums his fingers<lb />
on her outer thigh as if it was their second<lb />
or third. Nothing explicitly erotic goes on<lb />
back there, but the sexiness of the situation<lb />
makes what follows not only believable,<lb />
but also inevitable.<lb />
Yep, you guessed it; they fall in love.<lb />
Sort of. Despite those sparks she felt in the<lb />
trunk, she still tries to gun him down the<lb />
first chance she gets.<lb />
The movie then convincingly traces<lb />
how their attraction for each other becomes<lb />
irresistible. In a wise move, Soderbergh<lb />
gives us none of those tedious scenes<lb />
where friends and family attempt to talk<lb />
the lovers out of it<lb />
Sure, Buddy frowns about Jack's need to<lb />
see her, and Dennis Farina, as Karen's<lb />
father, shakes his head disapprovingly, but<lb />
they both seem somewhat amused by the<lb />

When they do get together<lb />

advice no laughter, no second<lb />

One ECU football player has been convict-<lb />
ed and one has been acquitted on charges of<lb />
assault.<lb />
Kevin Ward, a defensive back from<lb />
Kinston, and Travis Mazyck, a wide receiver<lb />
from Virginia Beach, Va were accused of<lb />
assaulting fellow student Kevin Hyman at a he will<lb />
fraternity party at Mendenhall Student would<lb />

On July 1, Mazyck was<lb />
found not guilty, while Ward<lb />

gy to Hyman and stay out of<lb />

In our modern world of controversy,<lb />
disputed ideas often revolve around<lb />
what exactly defines an athlete, distin-<lb />
guishes him or her from a spectator and<lb />
low any particular event even qualifies<lb />
n being termed a "sport NASCAR,<lb />
vith all its apparent simplicity, is one of<lb />
he more highly viewed activities in the<lb />
Southeastern U.S but perhaps the<lb />
east likely to have prestige accompany<lb />
t as a topic among sports critics.<lb />
This is due mostly to conceptions of<lb />
ion-athletic drivers, who require no<lb />
kill on the track, who supposedly are<lb />
ot versed in true competition, when<lb />
;alistically the necessary endurance<lb />
wolved may be slightly greater than<lb />
hat's essential for most other sports,<lb />
asketball and football, for examples,<lb />
How athletes to be exchanged, either<lb />
hen they've become injured or<lb />
tigued, but in sweltering heat that's<lb />
itensified by their fire-proof suits, full-<lb />
ice helmets and gloves, NASCAR dri-<lb />
;rs must attempt to retain their sanity<lb />
hile losing 10-12 pounds of sweat.<lb />
t Yes, racing requires patience. So<lb />
Bhat? Well, it's much more complex<lb />
since this mental discipline is just a<lb />
preparatory exercise.<lb />
The cars that are raced weigh<lb />
round 3,500 pounds, are capable of<lb />
peeds up to 200 mph, and even<lb />
ough it appears the aim is merely to<lb />
et ahead of the others while turning<lb />
ift, maintaining such a powerful vehi-<lb />
le, with an equivalent one just inches<lb />
way, certainly demands precision.<lb />
Not just anyone could do it.<lb />
Given that the pit crew must be in<lb />
ood health, jumping over a wall,<lb />
umping gas and changing tires in<lb />
omctimes less than 18 seconds, the<lb />
rivers must likewise be physically able<lb />
sustain uncomfortable conditions as<lb />
ricy do what most athletes try to do,<lb />
Ain.<lb />
And just like a baseball bat or tennis<lb />
racket is a tool for the hitter, so is a car<lb />
potential means for the driver to gain<lb />
advantage over his competitors.<lb />
If this machine, or driving tool, mal-<lb />
'unctions, or if there's not a carefully<lb />
lanned out meal that will rest for four<lb />
lours and not pursue an exit, or if a pit<lb />
rew isn't quite as vigorous as they<lb />
hould be, then an entire team is affect-<lb />
d and loses the race.<lb />
Being one of the key terms in any<lb />
athletic association, this idea of a<lb />
team" is undoubtedly a deciding fac-<lb />
or when considering whether or not<lb />
MASCAR is a sport, simply because it<lb />
uggests working together toward a<lb />
ommon goal.<lb />
Not predetermined, racing involves<lb />
avoiding risks, a respectable level of<lb />
concentration, and, at best, adrenalin-<lb />
pumping entertainment. These charac-<lb />
teristics definitely apply to other sports,<lb />
so why do so many refrain from placing<lb />
NASCAR in an athletic classification?<lb />
Probably the absence of a visible and<lb />
changing scoreboard and the fact that<lb />
when televised, a race does unjustly<lb />
appear repetitious.<lb />
But it's the observer who's easily<lb />
deceived by appearance that will forev-<lb />
er remain ignorant to NASCAR drivers,<lb />
far from being destitute of strength,<lb />
and the peril of their activity, quite<lb />
comparable to mountain climbing, foot-<lb />
ball and even ice-skating.<lb />
On the track, it's man against man,<lb />
machine against machine, and during a<lb />
race there's a sense of speeding stimu-<lb />
lation for both the drivers and fans that,<lb />
beyond the monotony, should entitle<lb />
NASCAR as a sport.<lb />

An almost endless cache of information,<lb />
the internet has millions of sites for every-<lb />
thing imaginable. So, it's not really much<lb />
of a surprise to find ECU sports well-rep-<lb />
resented and still growing.<lb />
One of those sources, one not run by or<lb />
through the university, is Crossbones.com,<lb />
a website devoted exclusively to ECU<lb />
athletics. Created about two and one half<lb />
years ago, the site gives information on<lb />
whatever is presently relevant to Pirate<lb />
sports and updates on former Pirates who<lb />
have careers in professional sports. The<lb />
prime and most popular feature though, is<lb />
Piratetalk, an open forum for all to talk<lb />
about their loves and hates involving the<lb />
Bucs. Students, alumni, fans, rival fans and<lb />
(its rumored) even athletic<lb />
department officials use the<lb />
chat room, discussing any<lb />
sport, though football is a<lb />
favored topic.<lb />
Crossbones.com<lb />
actually evolved from<lb />

newsletter called the Skull and Crossbones,<lb />
run by alum Coby Heath. A few years ago,<lb />
Heath was approached by Alan McDavid,<lb />

of its primary functions is to ser-<lb />

local newspapers would not be<lb />
much help to the distant Pirates,<lb />
and national publications such as<lb />

the ECU supporters can log on and<lb />

desire.<lb />

sports are present. Piratetalk is the best<lb />

with motivation to learn<lb />
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) <lb />
For 25 days each summer, the gym<lb />
at South Carolina State University<lb />
echoes with the din of hundreds of<lb />
young math and science scholars.<lb />
They run through times-table<lb />
drills. They goosh together glue<lb />
and liquid starch to make a slick,<lb />
white polymer. They stretch their<lb />
environmental vocabularies.<lb />
And, oh yeah, they play<lb />
sports. Basketball, golf, swim-<lb />
ming. Volleyball, softball, ten-<lb />
nis.<lb />
"We use (sports) as a carrot,<lb />
to elicit that behavior that we<lb />
want says Ken Mosely, a<lb />
teacher at South Carolina State<lb />
who originated the National<lb />
Youth Sports-sanctioned pro-<lb />
gram there in 1993. The pro-<lb />
gram rotates short classes in<lb />
math and science with court or<lb />
field time.<lb />
"(Children) excel in sports<lb />
because they want to play it<lb />
all the time, without anybody<lb />
motivating them Mosely says.<lb />
In Moscly's, and in two other<lb />
such programs at the University of<lb />
South Carolina and Francis Marion<lb />
University, hundreds of mostly<lb />
low-income children attack math<lb />
and science with fervor though<lb />
maybe not quite the fervor they<lb />
reserve for play because they know<lb />
that studying earns them coaching<lb />
in sports, too.<lb />
Ten-year-old Pasha Franklin is<lb />
among the 350-plus children who<lb />
will attend South Carolina State<lb />
each weekday through Friday. She<lb />
sat one day at a folding table,<lb />
scratching at u math worksheet as a<lb />
tiny,<lb />
face.<lb />
hat-mounted fan cooled her<lb />
"It's OK she said of the pro-<lb />
gram. "I like science, because<lb />
that's my best subject, and I like<lb />
sports (especially basketball)<lb />
Pasha said she wasn't the only<lb />
one learning something this sum-<lb />
mer: "Now my mom's helping me,<lb />
too. She learned how to do some<lb />
more math" because Pasha takes<lb />
"That's one thing the program<lb />
tries to do, teach parents who may<lb />
have limited skills themselves.<lb />
Every parent wants to be able to<lb />
help his or her children succeed<lb />
Ken Mosely<lb />
Souih Carolina State teachrer<lb />
her work home.<lb />
That's one thing the program<lb />
tries to do, teach parents who may<lb />
have limited skills themselves,<lb />
Moseley says. Every parent wants<lb />
to be able to help his or her chil-<lb />
dren succeed, he says.<lb />
Nine-year-old Brandon Watkins<lb />
said he would rather be having<lb />
"real fun" watching movies this<lb />
summer, but he liked some things<lb />
about the summer program.<lb />
"You can learn about doing<lb />
stuff, and you can do it at home<lb />
he said.<lb />
The program takes children<lb />
ages 10 to 16 and teaches them not<lb />
only math, science and sports, but<lb />
drug-resistance and personal<lb />
hygiene. Some of the older stu-<lb />
dents come from group homes<lb />
reserved for those in minor trouble<lb />
with the law.<lb />
But even those children seem<lb />
happy to knead plastic baggies of<lb />
goo to make a Silly Putty-like blob<lb />
of polymer.<lb />
Though much of the program<lb />
centers on classroom instruction,<lb />
Mosely and his staff manage to<lb />
teach math and science through<lb />
sports, too.<lb />
"If you want to teach some-<lb />
body about vectors and angles,<lb />
what better way than basketball?"<lb />
he asks.<lb />
"We can really get them inter-<lb />
ested in percentages when they're<lb />
making free-throw shots. (And<lb />
they learn) what angle of release<lb />
will help them to get the best<lb />
shot<lb />
Last year, about 40 National<lb />
Youth Sports Programs nationwide<lb />
emphasized math and science.<lb />
This year, the NCAA-sponsored<lb />
program has boosted that total to<lb />
100.<lb />
Like UNC-Chapel Hill, SCSU<lb />
has offered programs for several<lb />
years. This year, with about 450<lb />
children, SCSU is the first to<lb />
emphasize math and science.<lb />
"Sports has the ingredients of<lb />
teaching many other life skills<lb />
says Albert Neal, a clinical profes-<lb />
sor in the School of Public Health<lb />
who administers USC's program.<lb />
And sports show children they<lb />
can excel, he says.<lb />
"All of the A's they've been<lb />
missing other places, they get<lb />
them through sports Neal said.<lb />
