Stadium collapses, investigation begins<lb />
Pirates plan to play<lb />
football opener at Rose<lb />
High School<lb />
Jomama Smith<lb />
U.S. PRESIDENT<lb />
Just as the contractors were putting<lb />
the finishing touches on the upper<lb />
deck of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium,<lb />
ECU's world of football came<lb />
crashing to the ground in what has<lb />
become ECU's biggest tragedy of<lb />
ail time.<lb />
At approximately 1:30 a.m. this<lb />
morning, the recently completed<lb />
upper deck of the football stadium<lb />
started to crumble. Within seconds,<lb />
it lay on the ground in millions of<lb />
pieces. ,<lb />
First to report to the scene was<lb />
officer Jimmy Bubble of the<lb />
Greenville Police Department.<lb />
According to Bubble, the cause of<lb />
the incident is unknown at this<lb />
time, and investigation is currently<lb />
under way.<lb />
It is really unfortunate that this<lb />
has happened Bubble said.<lb />
"After all of the time and effort that<lb />
was put in to building the upper<lb />
deck, it will be hard to ever watch<lb />
an ECU football game ever again<lb />
At this time, plans are being<lb />
made for the Pirates' season open-<lb />
er against UT Chattanooga to be<lb />
held at Greenville's Rose High<lb />
School.<lb />
"We understand that it will be<lb />
hard to fit all of the ECU fans on to<lb />
Rose's school grounds much less<lb />
into the actual stands, but it is the<lb />
only option that we have at this<lb />
point Bubble said. "It is either<lb />
Rose or no ECU football games at<lb />
all in 1998<lb />
Faculty and staff at Rose High<lb />
School are delighted that the<lb />
Pirates will be playing on their<lb />
grounds, and will make every effort<lb />
to ensure that- things run smoothly<lb />
for the first game of the season.<lb />
"We are planning to have a<lb />
bake sale as a fund raiser for<lb />
rebuilding the upper deck<lb />
Joannie Jackal, a math teacher at<lb />
Rose said. "We will also be selling<lb />
Rose High School underwear for<lb />
$2.50 per pair. Be sure to get yours<lb />
In the early morning hours of March 31 many students and nearby residents heard the loud crash as the stadium crumbled to the<lb />
ground. The opening season will temporarily be played at Rose High School.<lb />
before they all sell out<lb />
Tickets for the game will go on<lb />
sale on August 14, approximately<lb />
one month before the game date,<lb />
and can be purchased through the<lb />
Forensics Department at Rose<lb />
High School. Be prepared to wait<lb />
in line.<lb />

SGA President Scott Forbes made<lb />
a huge splash at the student rec<lb />
center late Monday night Forbes,<lb />
who was apparently skinny dip-<lb />

resigning.<lb />
"There's nothing wrong with<lb />
getting a little crazy every now and<lb />
then a defiant Forbes said. "PI!<lb />

ECU police say they answered<lb />
an anonymous call at 2:13 a.m. say-<lb />
ing that someone had removed the<lb />
cover from the student rec center's<lb />
outdoor pool. When police arrived<lb />
they found Forbes trying to climb<lb />
over the fence with his clothes in<lb />
his hand.<lb />
"He was attempting to climb<lb />
over the metal fence surrounding<lb />
the pool when we arrived on the<lb />
scene officer Joe Grishom said.<lb />
"It was quite a sight We could see<lb />
his bare butt shining from the<lb />
police car<lb />
Forbes was taken to the police<lb />
station and released. He faces a<lb />
court date of May 7 and a campus<lb />
hearing is expected in several<lb />
weeks.<lb />
Police say an unidentified<lb />
female was observed running from<lb />
the rec center. 52 year old Forbes<lb />
refused to tell police who the<lb />
young woman was, but sources say<lb />
she is a freshman.<lb />
"This is outrageous SGA<lb />
Legislator Leslie Sikes said. "Still,<lb />
as unbelievable as he sometimes is,<lb />
we all love him<lb />
Members of the executive com-<lb />
mittee refused to comment on<lb />
Forbes' late night swim. However,<lb />
several other sources said that this<lb />
is not the first time Forbes has been<lb />
caught in the buff.<lb />
Grishom said Forbes was caught<lb />
skinny dipping in the Tar River on<lb />
New Years Eve, but avoided arrest<lb />
by smooth talking his way out of<lb />
the situation.<lb />
"I'll take my clothes off when-<lb />
ever I want" Forbes said. "Besides,<lb />
it ain't bragging to say, if you've got<lb />

In a recent board meeting, ECU<lb />
officials overturned the policy<lb />
regarding separate sex bathrooms in<lb />
coed residence halls.<lb />
"It is a change we have been try-<lb />
ing to make for many semesters<lb />
now said Larry Boston, faculty<lb />
member. "College students arc<lb />
adults and should be able to see and<lb />
do adult things<lb />
Jones Hall will be the testing<lb />
grounds for coed bathrooms. If the<lb />
change to coed bathrooms goes<lb />
over smoothly here, the change will<lb />
then go into effect in all coed resi-<lb />
dence halls.<lb />
"We want to make sure students<lb />
are comfortable with the change<lb />
Boston said.<lb />
According to ECU official Tony<lb />
Claw, the change is to make sure<lb />
students are aware of their own sex-<lb />
uality, or lack thereof.<lb />
"It is about time men and<lb />
women begin to see the opposite<lb />
sex in full nudity so that students<lb />
will understand the difference<lb />
between genders Claw said. "It<lb />
will be quite the educational expe-<lb />

Many students are thrilled with<lb />
the idea of seeing each other com-<lb />

"I look great in my birthday suit<lb />

"The body is a beautiful thing,<lb />
especially those of the opposite<lb />
sex said Bette<lb />
Colingheimerhoffen, Jones Hall<lb />
resident. "I just hope people aren't<lb />
to shy to drop their drawers in front<lb />
of me.<lb />
All students interested must<lb />
have written consent from their par-<lb />
ents before the deadline for on-<lb />
campus housing. The change to<lb />
coed bathrooms is scheduled to go<lb />
into effect Fall 1998. As of March<lb />
30, the waiting list to get into Jones<lb />
Hall is over four years long.<lb />
ECU's Board of Trustees will vote<lb />
on a controversial measure that<lb />
seeks to legalize prostitution on<lb />
campus. If the measure passes,<lb />
ECU will become the first educa-<lb />
tional institute in the United States<lb />
to sanction organized prostitution.<lb />
Trustee Richard Baird is credited<lb />
with developing the<lb />
proposal. He said he<lb />
thought of the idea<lb />
one day while star-<lb />
ing intensely at the<lb />
cupola.<lb />
"I was out on the<lb />
mall, trying to figure<lb />
out what the hell<lb />
good the cupola is<lb />
Bairdexplained. "I<lb />
mean it's long, stiff,<lb />
thick, fun to look at<lb />
but what the hell<lb />
good is it? And then,<lb />
bam, it came to me.<lb />
"Actually, the<lb />
idea of legalized<lb />
prostitution at<lb />
places of learning<lb />
is not new. It's a<lb />
common practice<lb />
on European<lb />
campuses, especially in France. By<lb />
the way, do you know what they<lb />
call a Big Mac in Paris?"<lb />
Additionally, Baird is proposing<lb />
that current dining facilities be<lb />
turned into what he calls "pleasure<lb />
domes<lb />
"The dining facilities are the<lb />
perfect spot students have been<lb />
screwed by outrageous prices for<lb />
years anyway he said. Baird says<lb />
it's also possible that new classes<lb />
will be offered to accommodate the<lb />
measure, including introduction to<lb />
pimping, hoing around (AKA fish-<lb />
net finance) and a special seminar<lb />
on S & M and T & A sponsored by<lb />
BB & T. Surprisingly, the proposal<lb />
has met with little opposition on<lb />
campus.<lb />
When approached for comment<lb />
Trustee Benny Coleman, respond-<lb />
ed, "Where's my money, honey?"<lb />
The measure has drawn fire<lb />
from the White House. President<lb />
Clinton claims to be enraged and<lb />
"spurting" mad.<lb />
" A s<lb />
Americans, we<lb />
owe it to our-<lb />
selves not to<lb />

Clinton said.<lb />
