Editor's note: This is part two of a threr-part series<lb />
on internships and the opportunities they provide<lb />
One of the greatest experiences a student can<lb />
have in college is to do an internship with a<lb />
prominent business, and there are many busi-<lb />
nesses in the Greenville area that recruit from<lb />
the ECU campus.<lb />
Northwestern Mutual Life is one of the<lb />
many companies that routinely recruits interns<lb />
from ECU. Northwestern was recently named<lb />
one of the "Top Ten Internships in America"<lb />
by the 1997 editions of America's Top<lb />
Internships.<lb />
"Our definition of internship is that an<lb />
internship is an opportunity for students to<lb />
Matt Tomaliwicz of ECU and Jackie Wang of Cornell University are state licensed insurance agents i<lb />
working for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance this semester.<lb />
PHOTO 8Y PATRICK IRELAN<lb />
sample the careers within the insurance indus-<lb />
try said Bill Fleming, district agent for<lb />
Northwestern Mutual Life.<lb />
Becoming an intern with Northwestern<lb />
Mutual Life involves more than filing, typing<lb />
memos and being a gopher for the boss.<lb />
Interns at Northwestern actually become<lb />
licensed insurance agents, sell insurance and<lb />
help customers decide what type of insurance<lb />
they need.<lb />
"We feel like the experience is invaluable to<lb />
the interns. They gain sales and business<lb />
experiences, networking ties and a better<lb />
understanding of finances and insurance<lb />
Fleming said.<lb />
The internships are available to all under-<lb />
graduate and graduate full-time students of<lb />
any major.<lb />
Each year Northwestern Mutual Life agen-<lb />
cies select over 500 students nationwide for<lb />
rheir unique internship program. Currently<lb />
there are four ECU students interning at the<lb />
local agency.<lb />
The internship is a year round commitment<lb />
and rhe interns are paid commission for every-<lb />
thing the sell just like a regular agent.<lb />
The company is currently testing a pilot 10-<lb />
week program this summer.<lb />
The pilot program involves the students<lb />
working full-time for 10 weeks and they<lb />
receive a $1000 stipend at the end, along with<lb />
commission on their sells throughout.<lb />
"It is a tremendous advantage for students<lb />
to do an internship Fleming said, "I've had<lb />
many former interns say that having our intern-<lb />
ship on their resume helped them get a job<lb />
over other applicants<lb />
Fleming said having a sales-type internship<lb />
is a big advantage because people in the busi-<lb />
ness industry know how difficult it is to sell<lb />
insurance so they know che student has a lot of<lb />
drive and ambition. <lb />
Since the intern program began in 1967,<lb />
over 3,000 college agents have gone on to<lb />
choose life insurance sales as a career.<lb />
Fleming said approximately one-third of<lb />
the interns make a career with Northwestern<lb />
Mutual Life. He also said that those agents<lb />
who were interns have the best career track<lb />
and in their first year as a full-time agent, they<lb />
have a 50 percent higher success rate.<lb />
Any students who would like to know more<lb />
about the Northwestern Mutual Life College<lb />
.Agent program should contact Jeff Mahoney at<lb />
355-7700 or stop by the agency at 217<lb />

University receives on-line African<lb />
art collection<lb />
COI RTFSY OF THF K 1 NK.JVS Rl KFM<lb />
An anonymous donor has given ECU one of the most extensive collec-<lb />
tions of .African an in the Southeastern U.S university officials<lb />
announced on May 9.<lb />
Among plans for the collection is the creation of a "gallery without<lb />
walls an interactive displav that vill provide access to the art objectN<lb />
via the Internet, according to Mike Dorsey, dean of the School of Art.<lb />
The extensive collectionnearly 1,000 piecesconsists primarily of<lb />
functional and ceremonial pieces from the western and southern regions<lb />
of Africa. Linique examples of fetish figures and a rare type of double-<lb />
faced helmet maskheaddress are part of the collection, along with cer-<lb />
emonial masks, animal headdresses, figures, weapons and instruments.<lb />
"The quality of the pieces is exceptional said Dorsey, who<lb />
announced the gift to the Board of Trustees. "This collection is the<lb />
quality of one that you would see in the Smithsonian<lb />
Dorsey said the donor decided to give the sizable collection to ECU<lb />
after seeing how the university handled the African art donated by Dr.<lb />
James W. Lankton, a Winston-Salem physician, in 1995. Lankton's 150-<lb />
piece collection is from the Kuba kingdom in central Zaire.<lb />
"As with the Lankton collection, we plan to use these pieces to<lb />
teach, to further our curriculum Dorsey said. "This isn't just about art.<lb />
We want people to be able to learn more about .African culturethe<lb />
region's history; societal issues, even musicfrom these art objects<lb />
In order to teach as many people as possible, and to bring the<lb />
school's two extensive .African art collections together for viewing and<lb />
study. Dorsey and his colleagues devised the gallerv without walls in<lb />
cooperation with the university's Computing and Information Systems<lb />
Office.<lb />
W Wavne Godwin, a School of Art facultv member who teaches com-<lb />
puter-aided design, will direct the gallery without walls. Plans for this<lb />
interactive exrit include rotating objects and information screens tar-<lb />
geted to different viewers.<lb />
"In rhis way, we can attract an elementary school student and an<lb />
African art scholar to the same exhibit. They can each 'click on' what<lb />
they're interested in Dorsey said.<lb />
Dorsey said this collection and the gallery without walls will create<lb />
new opportunities for ECU, art patrons and scholars. "The possibilities<lb />
onlv start with this exhibit<lb />
Some of the pieces included in the anonymous gift to the university are fetish pieces and double faced<lb />
headdresses. University officials are planning to include the pieces in a "gallery without walls The collec-<lb />
tion, along with the Lankton collection, will be able to be viewed via the Internet.<lb />

McVeigh verdict begins healing process<lb />
'This brings some peace' -<lb />
McVeigh verdict gives<lb />
nation chance to heal<lb />
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - One by one, the fam-<lb />
ilies lined up at the slippery elm that had out-<lb />
lived the Oklahoma City bombing to nourish it<lb />
with water representing tears they had shed for<lb />
the dead.<lb />
Some poured all they had, symbolizing the<lb />
grief they had resolved. Others sprinkled only a<lb />
few drops; some tears will never be forgotten.<lb />
Slowly, the ground beneath the tree became<lb />
muddy.<lb />
"I really feel like I can go on with my life<lb />
now said Dan McKinney, whose wife, Linda,<lb />
and niece, Shellv, were killed in the blast on April<lb />
19, 1995.<lb />
McKinney<lb />
emptied<lb />
about<lb />
three-quar-<lb />
ters of his<lb />
bottle of<lb />
water at the<lb />
base of the<lb />
tall, leafy<lb />
"survivors'<lb />
tree" that<lb />
street from where the Alfred P.<lb />
Murrah building was reduced to<lb />
rubble. He thought he might<lb />
drink the rest.<lb />
"That way it'll always be with<lb />
me he said.<lb />
Relatives of the 168 people<lb />
who lost their lives gathered<lb />
here Monday night, hours after<lb />
the nation learned that Timothy<lb />
McVeigh, a 29-year-old Gulf War<lb />
veteran, had been convicted of<lb />
murder and conspiracy.<lb />
Now the nation will wait<lb />
again as jurors decide whether McVeigh w ill<lb />
be sentenced to die for the deadliest act of<lb />
terrorism in the United States.<lb />
The verdict brought cheers here and at<lb />
the federal courthouse in Denver, where<lb />
McVeigh had been on trial since April 24.<lb />
After U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch<lb />
left the bench, one man in the courtroom<lb />
raised both fists over his head. People<lb />
embraced and burst into tears.<lb />
Rudy Guzman, whose brother. Marine<lb />
Capt. Randy Guzman, died in the bombing,<lb />
stood sobbing outside the courthouse:<lb />
"There's no relief at all<lb />
In Washington, President Clinton said it<lb />
was "a very important and long overdue day<lb />
for the survivors and families of those who<lb />
died in Oklahoma City But he, too,<lb />
acknowledged that no verdict can end the<lb />
anguish.<lb />
"This brings some peace<lb />
said Deloris Watson, whose<lb />
grandson was severely<lb />
injured in the building's day<lb />
care center. "But my P.Js<lb />
lungs are no better than<lb />
when the explosion<lb />
occurred. This will remain<lb />
with us for as long as we<lb />
live<lb />
Aren Almon, whose 1-year-<lb />
old daughter, Baylee. died in<lb />
the blast and was carried<lb />
from the building by a firefighter in one of<lb />
the most heartbreaking images of the cata-<lb />
strophe, offered her thanks to the jury.<lb />
"I don't think they're going to regret this.<lb />
They made the right decision. He was guilty.<lb />
I hope he'll get the death penalty she said.<lb />
Baylee was one of 19 children who per-<lb />
ished.<lb />
The attention now is on the penalty for<lb />
McVeigh. Like Ms. Almon, many said he<lb />
should be shown no mercy.<lb />
"I don't think the conventional methods<lb />
should be used. I think they should ampu-<lb />
tate his legs without anesthesia and shove<lb />
bamboo rods up his leg said a tearful<lb />
William Baay, a rescue worker who had sifted<lb />
through the shattered concrete and glass and<lb />
twisted metal.<lb />
"He killed my son and he's not human<lb />
now said Charles Tomlin, who lost his son,<lb />
Ricky. "He's an animal. Only an animal can<lb />
do what he did<lb />
Inside his small, ranch-style house in<lb />
Pendleton, N.Y McVeigh's father, William,<lb />
quietly watched the verdict on television.<lb />
Nearby was his daughter, Jennifer, who<lb />
described her brother's anti-government fer-<lb />
vor to jurors.<lb />
In a statement, they asked for prayers on<lb />
Timothys behalf: "Even though the jury has<lb />
fund Tim guilty, we still love him very<lb />
much and intend to stand by him no matter<lb />
what happens<lb />
James Nichols, the brother of co-defen-<lb />
dant Terry Nichols, said the trial proved<lb />
nothing. He accused the government of a<lb />
conspiracy.<lb />
"They've made accusations, Terry and<lb />
Tim done this, and Terry and Tim done that,<lb />
but they've backed it up with no evidence<lb />
he told reporters outside his fatm in Decker,<lb />
Mich. "Those jurors had a lot of pressure on<lb />
them: 'What do we do?' .And public pressure<lb />
changes peoples' minds<lb />
Evidence of the bomb's destruction still<lb />
stood around those who came to the flower-<lb />
bedecked fence surrounding the bomb site.<lb />
The steel skeletons of nearby buildings<lb />
ripped apart by the blast are rusting with<lb />
exposure. In other buildings, gaping holes<lb />
remain where shattered windows have not<lb />
been replaced.<lb />
Where<lb />
the federal<lb />
building<lb />
once stood,<lb />
nothing is<lb />
left but an<lb />
empty<lb />
expanse of<lb />
grass. '<lb />
The<lb />
water contin-<lb />

"It feels<lb />
good said<lb />
Amy Stiers,<lb />
whose step-<lb />
mother and<lb />
cousin lost<lb />
their lives.<lb />
"We've had two years of sad times. Today is<lb />
happy<lb />
Jennifer Walker said the day was emo-<lb />
tional but nothing like learning that her<lb />
father, David, had died in the blast.<lb />
"I am taking this one day at a time until<lb />
he gets final justice she said of McVeigh.<lb />
"That's when God gets him<lb />
Though a number of minority<lb />

ECU faculty attend conference in Italy<lb />
Eight members of the ECU faculty were in Italy May 21-23, to attend the<lb />
third ECU-University of Ferrara conference on Renaissance Studies at the<lb />
Ferrara campus. The conference alternates each spring between Greenville<lb />
and the Ferrara campuses.<lb />
This year's conference focused on Francesco Patrizi da Cherso, a 16th<lb />
century Italian philosopher. The ECU professors presented papers at the<lb />
conference about the philosopher and about the age in which he lived.<lb />
Those participating in the program included Anthony Papalas and Bodo<lb />
Nischan of the department of history, Eugene Ryan of the department of<lb />
philosophy Martin Schwarz of foreign languages and literatures, Lawrence<lb />
Hough of political science, Lillian Robinson of English, and Christopher<lb />
Ulffers and Bret Watson of the School of Music.<lb />
Greenville natives named to ASU's Honors Lists<lb />
Several students from Greenville have been named to the honor roll at<lb />
Appalachian State University.<lb />
Two students were named to the Chancellor's List, which requires a 3.85<lb />
CPA for at least 12 credit hours. They were Jennifer Lynn Colardo, majoring<lb />
in communication disorders, and Katherine Elise McPherson, majoring in<lb />
child development.<lb />
In order to be named to the Dean's List, a student must have a 3.45 GPA<lb />
for 12 to 14 credit hours or a 3.25 for 15 or more credit hours. Those students<lb />
were Leslie Lynn Bartlett in biology, Jennifer Rebecca Curry in foods and<lb />
nutrition, and Sarah Marie Dutton for communications.<lb />
ECU study reports RX drugs<lb />
too costly for many retirees<lb />
Sociologist Jim Mitchell and anthropologist Holly Mathews, both with the<lb />
ECU Center on Aging, collected information from over 600 eastern North<lb />
Carolina residents aged 66 and older. Mitchell and Mathews found that more<lb />
than 30 percent of the people who take prescription drugs have difficulty<lb />
paying for them.<lb />
Medicare, the federal health insurance program for older adults, does not<lb />
pay for prescription drugs, and Medicaid, the federal program that pays for<lb />
health care for people who are financially needy, pays only after a large<lb />
deductible is met.<lb />
The ECU researchers said 10 percent of the older people who have diffi-<lb />
culty paying for their drugs borrow money from family members or have rel-<lb />
atives pay for their prescriptions. About 15 percent keep their expenses<lb />
down by taking less medicine than prescribed or by going without their med-<lb />
ications altogether.<lb />
The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research of the National<lb />
Institutes of Health funded the study.<lb />
Mitchell, the primary investigator on the project, will present the results<lb />
in June at the meeting of the Association for Health Services Research in<lb />
Chicago.<lb />

Morton criticized for shopping center development<lb />
SUGAR MOUNTAIN, N.C. (AP) - A conservationist long admired for pre-<lb />
serving Grandfather Mountain is being criticized as an environmental hyp-<lb />
ocrite because of a shopping center he built.<lb />
The shopping center, with a supermarket and a combined fast-food<lb />
restaurant and gas station, is built on 17 acres on the north side of the<lb />
mountain, which sits in the middle of the state's premier skiing resorts.<lb />
Next to the center, Morton and a business partner plan to build hotels,<lb />
condominiums and apartments on 80 acres, leaving the remaining three<lb />

Morton also built.<lb />
Morton says he's mystified that the country club community residents<lb />
are fussing about fewer than 100 acres along a heavily traveled intersection<lb />
between Boone and Banner Elk when, four years ago, he sold or gave up<lb />
development rights to 800 acres surrounding the property.<lb />
Man who rented apartment from judge files suit<lb />
RALEIGH (AP) - A Wake County Superior judge is being sued for alleged-<lb />
ly striking a tenant with his car during an argument.<lb />
Jean-Pierra Mwamba is seeking $30 million dollars in damages from<lb />
Judge Stafford Bullock. The case went to court Monday on Bullock's<lb />
motion for dismissal, but proceedings were delayed 60 days so Mwamba<lb />
can get a lawyer.<lb />
Mwamba rented an apartment from Bullock but was evicted in 1993.<lb />
He sued Bullock over the eviction, bur a judge threw out the case.<lb />
In his lawsuit, Mwamba says he encountered the judge in February of<lb />
last year in a fast-food parking lot. He claims the judge got into his<lb />
Mercedes-Benz and struck Mwamba five times in the legs. Police did not<lb />
charge Bullock.<lb />

Remember your first time on a college campus? Fterhaps it was when you were in high<lb />
school or maybe even younger. Did you feel lost? Did someone give you the wrong direc-<lb />
tions? Wire you confused? It wasn't a good feeling, was it? So why would you want to do the<lb />
same thing to someone else?<lb />
For most of us, orientation was the first time we stayed on a college campus. W: were all<lb />
doubtful, uncertain and scared. Ws didn't know if we would make friends, get the classes<lb />
we wanted or get in the clubs we wanted. Our stomachs were full of butterflies and our<lb />
minds were a wreck. But, at the same time, we were excited and ready to leave home, anx-<lb />
ious for this new period in our life.<lb />
This week marks the beginning of ECU's freshman orientation and, for many, this is the<lb />
beginning of a whole new world, full of opportunities and chances to have fun. Some stu-<lb />
dents will be more than ready, eager and full of potential, yet others will be scared to death<lb />
in fear that they will not fit in. We all know that fitting in is very important when you are a<lb />
freshman and the hat thing you want to do is embarrass yourself.<lb />
So why dorft we, ECU upperclasamen, doour very best to make sure that their transition<lb />
from high school to college goes smoothly? Ws are mature and capable of acting like the<lb />
adults that we are, so when we see them walking along like a group of tourists carrying their<lb />
little white bags we need to be polite, caring and willing to give them our support. And<lb />
when they ask for directions don't tell them, "There is no such place as Mendenhall here<lb />
at ECU; you must be crazy or "College Hill? Do you mean Chapel Hill? There's nothing<lb />
but Pirates here; you are at the wrong school<lb />
We don't always remember what it was like our first time at college and how badly we<lb />
wanted to make a good impression. So let's be on our best behavior and treat the freshmen<lb />
as we would want to be treated - as human beings, not like little rugrats in the way.<lb />
Pretty soon we will be once again entering a new stage in our lives leaving college and<lb />
moving into the real world. Ws are going to have a boss above us and maybe subordinates<lb />
beneath us. Vfe don't want a boss to treat us like an imbecile and we can't treat our subor-<lb />
dinates that way if we want them to work for us. So when you see these freshmen walking<lb />
around in great confusion, try to think about how you would feel on your first day at a new<lb />
job.<lb />
OPINION<lb />
Lefties deserve equality in a right world<lb />
Equality: 1 demand it for myself and<lb />
expect it for others. fet, from the<lb />
time I wake to the time 1 go to sleep,<lb />
I encounter inequalities. These<lb />
inequalities occur in everyday items<lb />
that most people take for granted.<lb />
Writing, eating driving a cat, using a<lb />
computer, and even playing sports<lb />
present some sort of problem to peo-<lb />
ple in with my handicap. People like<lb />
myself are discriminated against, all<lb />
because we use our left hand more<lb />
than our right.<lb />
Imagine you are driving down a<lb />
two-lane highway and a bus full of<lb />
nuns suddenly swerves into the right<lb />
lane (your lane). The natural reac-<lb />
tion for right-handed people is to<lb />
pull with their right hand, thus dri-<lb />
ving off on to the shoulder of the<lb />
road. A leftie's natural reaction is<lb />
the opposite, pull with the left-hand<lb />
and swerve into oncoming traffic,<lb />
malting the six-o'clock news.<lb />
Research has shown left-handed<lb />
people are more prone to accident<lb />
than their right-handed brethren.<lb />
The evidence for lefties being acci-<lb />
dent prone is everywhere. An<lb />
extremely good example is skill<lb />
saws. Skill saws have a protective<lb />
steel guard on the left side. The<lb />
guard is there to prevent a right-<lb />
handed person from separating a<lb />
hand from his or her body. A left-<lb />
handed person who uses the saw<lb />
with his or her left hand could very<lb />
well lose some vital organs along<lb />
with the hand.<lb />
Writing poses a big problem for<lb />
the left-handed individual. Left-<lb />
handed people have to write back-<lb />
wards, from left to right. Consider<lb />
most ink does not dry instantly.<lb />
Many a time I have looked at my<lb />
pinkie to see it has turned blue or<lb />
black because of the ink Right-<lb />
handed people have the extra tew<lb />
seconds that the ink dries before<lb />
their hands touch the ink on the<lb />
next line.<lb />
Even computers are designed for<lb />
right-handed people. Look at com-<lb />
puters, especially the ones on cam-<lb />
pus. The mouse is almost always<lb />
located on the right side. You can try<lb />
to move the mouse, but look what<lb />
happens, Rw a right handed person<lb />
their first finger is usually the one<lb />
that does the clicking. With the<lb />
mouse on the left-hand 3ide the ring<lb />
finger now does the clicking As if<lb />
that were not bad enough, look at<lb />
the key configuration of the key-<lb />
board. The right-hand side is where<lb />
two of the most commonly used<lb />
keys are located, the backspace and<lb />
enter.<lb />
As late as 1946, left-handed peo-<lb />
ple were considered to be awkward,<lb />
messy, unusual, prone to criminality<lb />
and often mentally and physically<lb />

TV zombies caught in vicious cycle<lb />
Statisticians report average U.S.<lb />
households watch over six hours of<lb />
television daily. Personally. I don't<lb />
know any average U.S. households. I<lb />
suspect Martha Stewart's may he. At<lb />
anv rate, that's six hours of ogling a<lb />
dav. We watch ER. Baywatch,<lb />
Seinfeld. We know the characters'<lb />
lives better than we know the lives<lb />
of real people.<lb />
But what happens to our<lb />
generation, which grew up literally<lb />
spending more time watching TV<lb />
than communicating with family,<lb />
watching silicon-injected, cucum-<lb />
brously cool, characters, saving lives<lb />
or falling tropically in love? What<lb />
happens when we watch tons of TV<lb />
which affects nearly every aspect of<lb />
life, from deodorant soap, to what<lb />
we look for in a spouse? Problem is<lb />
most of us don't reali.e the deep<lb />
effect of TV; or if we do realize, we<lb />
don't really care (the TV as indiffer-<lb />
ent living room furniture syn-<lb />
drome).<lb />
Why has this generation<lb />
seen a spike in the number of cases<lb />
of clinical depression? Why has the<lb />
divorce rate rocketed since 1950?<lb />
Because Joe Briefcase watches<lb />
six hours of good looking, sinistcrly<lb />
charming people living extraordi-<lb />
nary lives. Then Joe looks at his own<lb />
life and says, "My wife isn't nearly<lb />
that good looking or 'All I do is sell<lb />
insurance or real estate or teach ele-<lb />
mentary kids etc Ironically, what<lb />
does Joe do? Does he go out and<lb />
save lives or meet gorgeous people?<lb />
I think it's safe to say that in most<lb />
cases, no. He plops down for anoth-<lb />
er six hours, and whether conscious<lb />
of it or not, subtly feels even worse<lb />
about himself. It's a vicious, self-<lb />
deprecating cycle that 250 million<lb />
Americans subject themselves to<lb />
dailv.<lb />
defective. Even today left-handed<lb />
people have stigmas attached to<lb />
them. Try shaking someone's hand<lb />
with your left and see what happens.<lb />
Southpaw, back-handed and back-<lb />
wards are names for us. In the day<lb />
and age of political correctness we<lb />
prefer side-challenged. Research<lb />
has been done which shows that<lb />
left-handed people die before right-<lb />
handed people. Lefties might die<lb />
anywhere from five to nine years<lb />
before right-handed people.<lb />
The upside to being left-handed<lb />
is we are tend to be gifted as chil-<lb />
dren. A very good oumpk of this is<lb />
looking at the past presidents and<lb />
candidates. Presidents Ford,<lb />
Reagan, Bush, Clinton are all left-<lb />
handed. Candidates for the presi-<lb />
dency that are left-handed are Dole<lb />
and Perot.<lb />
We are not asking for much. All<lb />
we are asking is for equality As a<lb />
minority, thirteen percent of the<lb />
population is left-handed; we are<lb />
entitled to the same rights and priv-<lb />
ileges as others. Some of those<lb />
rights include: more left-handed<lb />
desks placed throughout the class-<lb />
room - not just in the back, allowing<lb />
left-handed people to play polo and<lb />
jala, and watching a right-handed<lb />
person try to drive a manual shift car<lb />
that came from Britain, where they<lb />
drive on the left side of the road.<lb />

SEVEN OUT OF TEN<lb />
DALE WILLIAMSON<lb />
SF.NIOH WRITF.R<lb />
What do you get when you take one<lb />
part Blade Runner, mix it with one<lb />
part Die Hani, add a little Star Wars<lb />
and The Adventures of But karoo Bataat<lb />
flavoring, and spice the entire recipe<lb />
with French pisoazz? In lesser hands,<lb />
the result would be an indigestible<lb />
mess, but such is not the case with<lb />
Luc Besson's latest creation, 'Ihe Fifth<lb />
FJement, a film that does not live up<lb />
to hopeful expectations but still<lb />
manages to be a fun ride.<lb />
Besson's reputation as an accom-<lb />
plished filmmaker has steadily been<lb />
growing over the past few years. His<lb />
French actionspy flick, la Femme<lb />
Nikita garnered enough attention<lb />
that Hollywood lud to get a piece of<lb />
the pie by producing a lame<lb />
American remake known as Point of<lb />
No Return. And in a time when the<lb />
likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and<lb />
Sylvester Stallone were deflating the<lb />
action genre, Besson breathed fresh<lb />
life into it with a small, quirky treat<lb />
called The Professional.<lb />
When word leaked out that<lb />
Besson's next feature would be a sci-<lb />
ence fiction film, fans and industry<lb />
insiders immediately set up high<lb />
expectations. People were envision-<lb />
ing grand results, something that<lb />
would boggle the mind and establish<lb />
new standards for an entire genre.<lb />
Considering Besson kept the film s<lb />
plot in sccrecv from everyone, espe-<lb />
cially the press. The Fifth FJement<lb />
seemed destined to be the biggest<lb />
thing to happen to science fiction<lb />
cinema since George Lucas' mytho-<lb />
logical dream about a boy and a<lb />
galaxv finallv became reality.<lb />
The result, alas, does not meet<lb />
those grand expectations. The Fifth<lb />
Element is Besson's childhood dream<lb />
come true, and it is a worthy dream<lb />
filled, at times, with astonishing<lb />
moments. But the plot is nothing<lb />
worth hiding from the press. Sadly<lb />
enough, the story (co-wntten by<lb />
Besson and Robert Mark Karmcn) is<lb />
about as simplistic as the plot in The<lb />
last World.<lb />
Here's what the pitch would<lb />
sound like coming from a producer:<lb />
"It's the future, you set, and this,<lb />
um, ancient prophecy states that,<lb />
uh, the world will be destroyed by.<lb />

Even if you are new to ECU and the<lb />

a certain lacking in the way of diver-<lb />

you aware or further inform you<lb />
about movies recently released on<lb />

Greenville.<lb />
I have no desire to repeatedly<lb />
debate whether or not Greenvilie has<lb />
an adequate choice of movies. You<lb />
may think the selection is just<lb />

alternatives. The reviews in this col-<lb />

Sunday has always been traditionally<lb />
a day of rest, a time to recover from<lb />
the weekend and prepare for the<lb />
upcoming week. However, this past<lb />
Sunday was a day of music as eight<lb />
up-and-coming artists played Walnut<lb />
Creek Amphitheater as part of the<lb />
G-105 Big Shindig. .<lb />
While the show's lineup of eight<lb />
popular new rock artists was well-<lb />
planned, the flaw of the show was<lb />
mediocre publicity. Since the show<lb />
was sponsored by G-105, a radio sta-<lb />
tion in Raleigh, no other radio sta-<lb />
tions advertised the show, and fans<lb />
outside the Triangle were left to<lb />
other sources for info.<lb />
Still, the show ended up being a<lb />
sell-out and, despite bad weather<lb />
forecasts, the Creek stayed mostly<lb />
filled for the entire day. Of course,<lb />
some people came and went as their<lb />
favorite bands were playing, but that<lb />
proved to be their loss as each band<lb />
played to their full potential.<lb />
Due to a ticket problem I missed<lb />
the first two acts, Shawn Colvin and<lb />
Duncan Sheik. However, I do know<lb />
that the powers-that-be must have<lb />
been worried about staying on<lb />
schedule, because Sheik got cutoff<lb />
partway through his last song. The<lb />
Third act of the day was the always<lb />
energetic Poe. After having a decent<lb />
Cwbov Mouth proved a tough act to follow this weekend at the G-105 Big Shindig<lb />
atW2SSt Barenaked Ladies. Poe and The Verve Pipe also played.<lb />
PHOTO COURTESY OF MIKE PERRY<lb />

was received warmly by the fans who<lb />
had arrived in time for her set.<lb />
Unfortunately despite an excellent<lb />
performance by her cellist, Poc's set<lb />
was disjointed at best. The music of<lb />
each instrument didn't seem to fit<lb />
together and her lyrics seemed<lb />
strained. She did give the crowd one<lb />
highlight though, as during her sec-<lb />
ond song she jumped the barricade<lb />
and ran through the crowd stopping<lb />
at a group of fans to body-surf for a<lb />
minute before returning to the<lb />
99flC<lb />
After Poc's set, the dark clouds<lb />
above opened up and no seat was<lb />
safe from the rain. While the lawn<lb />
crowd got the worse of it, strong<lb />
winds blew the rain under the roof as<lb />
far as the stage and got fans every-<lb />
where wet. However, the rain<lb />
stopped soon enough and no one<lb />
seemed to mind the cooling shower<lb />
too much.<lb />
Third Eve Blind took the stage as<lb />
the rains stopped and delivered what<lb />
ended as a decent performance.<lb />
.After a rough start that didn't look<lb />
promising, they improved song by<lb />
song until the end, having won a few<lb />
new fans over.<lb />
Local favorites Cravin Melon<lb />
were up next and were introduced as<lb />
"those guys that most of you know<lb />
from fraternitv parties everywhere;<lb />
Doug, Jimbo, J.J and Rick.<lb />
Cravin Melon Playing mostly<lb />
shine<lb />
songs off their most recent CD,<lb />
Cravin provided the Shindig withits<lb />
most musically sound set. The<lb />
crowd was receptive to all the songs<lb />
but went ballist;c when the band<lb />
kicked into their single "Come<lb />
Undone<lb />
This frenzy continued when they<lb />
ended their set with "Sweet Tea<lb />
One group on the lawn had even<lb />
made a banner saying "Drink Sweet<lb />
Tea and the band, after ending the<lb />
song, decided to let the crowd have<lb />
some participation. "It's not often<lb />
we play for 20,000 people said<lb />
Cravin's singer Doug Jones. "Lets<lb />
see how this sounds with you<lb />
singing The band then did one<lb />
more chorus of "Sweet Tea" with the<lb />
fans singing.<lb />
Recent MTV darlings the Verve<lb />
Pipe were up next and delivered a<lb />
powerful performance. You would<lb />
never expect the band to sound like<lb />
they did mcrerv from their hit, The<lb />
Freshmen Their performance<lb />
belied their slow hit by being simply<lb />
fast and loud. The band ripped<lb />
through song after song before end-<lb />
ing with an excellent rendition of<lb />
"The Freshmen <lb />
Up next was the Louisiana-based<lb />
quartet of Cowboy Mouth. Starting<lb />
their show with "This Little Light of<lb />

from the beginning that they were<lb />
here to make the audience feel good.<lb />

I would become a country music fan,<lb />
I would have laughed in their face.<lb />
There was no way I could go from<lb />
Jane's Addiction and Fishbone to<lb />
Hank Williams and Patsy Cline. But<lb />
it happened. And once I was bitten<lb />
by the twang bug there was no look-<lb />
ing back. This brings me to<lb />
Saturdav night, May 31 at the new-<lb />
House of Blues in Myrtle Beach<lb />
where the man in black himself,<lb />
Johnny Cash, rocked out for almost<lb />
three hours.<lb />
I knew it would be a great night<lb />
the instant I saw the House of<lb />
Blues. Built in the likeness nf an old<lb />
rusty tin shack, it has the charm of a<lb />
juke joint with the excitement of a<lb />
rock n' roll club. The inside is just as<lb />
awe inspiring with its wide, wood<lb />
planked floors and New Orleans<lb />
srvle decorations.<lb />
At ten o'clock the patchwork<lb />
quilt curtain slowly opened as<lb />
Johnnv Cash's four piece band<lb />
picked it up with a medley of his<lb />
best known songs. Finally, the man<lb />
in black strutted and bopped out on<lb />
stage to start out the night with<lb />
"Folsom Prison Blues<lb />
The crowd was great! They<lb />
danced, sang along and kept the yee<lb />
ha-ing to a minimum. One tie-dye<lb />
clad voung man even hopped up on<lb />
stage to give Johnny a hug, but was<lb />
quicklv accosted bv security and led<lb />
outside. At the start of the second<lb />
song, the tall ebony draped figure<lb />
showed he was there to get down to<lb />
business as he took off his jacket and<lb />
rolled up his sleeves, ready for a<lb />
night of blues rock and the sad songs<lb />
of convicts and coal miners that<lb />
countrv music is made of. The third<lb />
song siowed the pace a little. The<lb />
backdrop faded to black as Johnny<lb />

but their drummer got the crowd<lb />
going more. Introducing himself<lb />
merely as Fred, the drummer sang,<lb />
played his drums with unending<lb />
energy and proved to be a cheerleader<lb />
for all. Twice he ran through the<lb />
crowd firing people up. The second<lb />
time he climbed up one of the posts<lb />
at the back of the pavilion and talked<lb />
to the audience about how nothing<lb />
mattered but being alive. Their set<lb />
was also highlighted bv a version of<lb />
The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again"<lb />
that bordered on punk. By the time<lb />
they left the stage, nobody was left<lb />
sitting down, and the crowd was more<lb />
pumped than they had been the<lb />
whole night.<lb />
Unfortunately for the Barenaked<lb />
Ladies, this rmiJe for a tough act to<lb />
follow. The Ladies came out and<lb />
played their best and delivered a good<lb />
show, but it couldn't compare with<lb />
the energy of Cowboy Mouth.<lb />
However, the Ladies were the most<lb />
diverse group of the day as they<lb />
blended reggae, rap, lounge, big band<lb />
and rock together for a sound that was<lb />
truly unique to the day's perfor-<lb />
mances.<lb />
One nice thing about the Shindig,<lb />
was the fact that the artists were also<lb />
the fans. Cravin' Melon bassist J.J.<lb />
Bowers commented that he would<lb />
like to see the Verve Pipe perform,<lb />
while the Verve Pipe watched every-<lb />

pavilion. Poe's band came out to sign<lb />
autographs, and Duncan Sheik tried<lb />
to watch Third Eye Blind in between<lb />
signing autographs from the pavilion.<lb />
In all, the Shindig featured eight<lb />
great bands that seemed to care more<lb />
for the fans than for themselves at<lb />
time. Don't you wish all shows were<lb />
like that?<lb />

The ending, for example, is so typical<lb />
that I almost expected to hear Sting<lb />
singing "Love is the Fifth Element"<lb />
when the credits started rolling.<lb />
But, once you accept it for what it<lb />
is, Besson's dream is as enjoyable and<lb />
invigorating as anything you're likely<lb />
to see this summer.<lb />
Bruce Willis plays the same char-<lb />
acter he does in a!i his action films<lb />
(the down-on-my-luck, my-wife-has-<lb />
left-me, ex-specialistsuper cop who<lb />
is pulled reluctantly back into<lb />
action). But nobody plays that part<lb />
better than Willis. With his narrowly<lb />
slit eyes and weathered face, Willis<lb />
always allows his characters to act<lb />
without hesitation or apology. Willis is<lb />
one of the few action actors who can<lb />
add just the right amount of nastiness<lb />
to his heroes without obliterating the<lb />
essential heroic qualities. The most<lb />
interesting good guys are always the<lb />
ones who have a little bad in them.<lb />
On the flip side, nobody does bad<lb />
guy better than Gary Oldman. While<lb />
his performance as the evil Zorg<lb />
(That's right, his name is Zorg) may<lb />
be a bit over-the-top, it's still a classic<lb />
performance. If Oliver Stone ever<lb />
does the filmography of Ross Ferot,<lb />
Oldman's tailor-made for the role.<lb />
The shining star in this galaxy<lb />
though, is Milla Jovovich, who plays a<lb />
central role as Leeloo (I won't give<lb />
away what exactly her role is,<lb />
although it's not really too hard to<lb />
guess). Sure, she's beautiful and<lb />
physically impressive, but her real<lb />
strength lies in her acting. She gives a<lb />
wonderful performance that com-<lb />
mands the screen. In many ways, the<lb />
film would severely be lacking with-<lb />
out Jovovich.<lb />
Other worthwhile elements<lb />
include Eric Serra's music, Jean-Paul<lb />
Gautier's costume designs, and, of<lb />
course, the visual effects (This film<lb />
must be seen on the big screen sim-<lb />
ply for a shot in which Leeloo leaps<lb />
off a towering skyscraper into the<lb />
claustrophobic metropolis of the<lb />
future).<lb />
Besson's film is constantly good,<lb />
even poetic at moments, but it suf-<lb />
fers from a disjointed focus. Besson<lb />
seems to almost be making three<lb />
films at once here. He has a visually<lb />
stunning space opera, a standard<lb />
action flick, and a nutty slapstick<lb />
comedy all clamoring for attention.<lb />
While this does not allow for a mod-<lb />
em day masterpiece, Besson manages<lb />
to keep The Fifth Element in an ener-<lb />
getic and fun motion.<lb />

important to understanding the char-<lb />
acters of Mike and Trent. In most<lb />
movies, the cocky Trent character<lb />
would have been a one-dimensional<lb />
jerk. Trent is arrogant and over confi-<lb />
dent, but he cares about his friends,<lb />
and Mike needs him. Both actors are<lb />
real-life friends, which is very appar-<lb />
ent in the film.<lb />
The supporting cast (Ron<lb />
Livingston, Patrick Van Horn, Alex<lb />
Desert) is also excellent. Livingston's<lb />
character is passed up for the role of<lb />
Goofy at Disneyland for an applicant<lb />

behind him showed thirty year old<lb />

After this song, johnny took a<lb />
break. After all, he is 65 years old.<lb />
However, this marked a turning point<lb />
in the evening because while he was<lb />
on break, his son, John Carter Cash,<lb />
who was backing up his dad on<lb />
acoustic guitar, did a few songs. I<lb />
have to say this was a little disap-<lb />
pointing. Johnny Cash supposedly<lb />
has the voice of God and this was not<lb />
Jesus.<lb />
But after two songs, Johnny was<lb />
back on stage and all was well. After<lb />
a few more songs from his latest<lb />
album. Unchained, Johnny brought out<lb />
his wife, June Carter Cash. What<lb />
was interesting is that you could see<lb />
the chemistry between them. They<lb />
were affectionate, energetic, and<lb />
after June came out, Johnny seemed<lb />

Whitley, Greene head list of no-shows<lb />
CHARLOTTE (AP) - The no-shows overshadowed the participants as the<lb />

The absences of Gragert and King weren't surprises. Gragert is punting<lb />
overseas in the World League of American Football. King a reserve defen-<lb />

and alcohol abuse and, as a result, could face sanctions from the Nrb.<lb />
The only two other Carolina veterans who are under contract but did not<lb />
attend Monday's practice were Greene, the NFLs sacks leader last year, and<lb />
Whitley, who has had repeated alcohol-related troubles.<lb />
Coach Dom Capers raised the possibility that Whitley was again having<lb />

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Marv Slaney filed a complaint with the U.S.<lb />
Olympic Committee, claiming the drug test that prompted her suspension<lb />
was flawed and discriminates against women.<lb />
The USOC, in turn, demanded that USA Track & Field, the sport s<lb />
national governing body, respond by Fridcy, either by scheduling a hearing or<lb />
taking other action.<lb />
Lawyers for Slanev and two other Americans suspended by the interna-<lb />

USOC executive director Dick Schultz, who said the main concern was<lb />
resolving the cases before next week's national championships.<lb />
"We are following our normal procedures, to try to get this resolved,<lb />
Schultz said. "We want to see if it's resolvable between the athletes and<lb />

Schultz said that, if Slaney, hurdler Sandra Farmer-Patnck and another<lb />
unidentified athlete could not settle their dispute with USA Track & held,<lb />
their next step would be hearings before the Amencan Arbitration<lb />
Association. He said they also could take their cases to court.<lb />

Group alleges 25 schools discriminate<lb />
against female athletes<lb />
WASHINGTON (AP) - Heather Whittaker knows all about federal laws<lb />
protecting female athletes from discrimination. But the Bngham Young<lb />
University volleyball player says her school hasn't violated any.<lb />
"No one has ever complained about there being a lack of scholarships in<lb />
the women's department said the senior, who did a class paper on the ath-<lb />
letic department's compliance with federal discrimination laws. She is also<lb />
on full scholarship at the Utah university.<lb />
The National Women's Law Center thinks differently<lb />
The Washington-based center filed complaints Monday with the<lb />
Education Department's office for civil rights accusing 25 colleges and uni-<lb />
versities, including Vanderbilt, Duke, Wake Forest, Boston College and<lb />
Brigham Young, of violating the 1972 law known as Title DC<lb />
The organization alleges that female athletes receive just over one-third<lb />
of the scholarship dollars nationwide. If scholarships for female athletes<lb />
were more in line with participation, women at the 25 schools would get 5<lb />
million more, the center estimated.<lb />
Deborah Brake, senior counsel for the law center, noted that women<lb />
account for 49 percent of Duke's enrollment, but 34 percent of the hleres.<lb />
Duke women athletes got 27 percent of the scholarship money in 1995-<lb />
. That meant the average woman got $2,603 less than the average man,<lb />
the center says.<lb />

Summer is here again and that means it's time for barbeques, suntans and<lb />
outdoor activities. But unfortunately, along with the high temperature and<lb />
good times comes the danger of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.<lb />
Many people are confused as to the difference between the two and often<lb />
mistake them for the same thing. Heat exhaustion is a heat injury with<lb />
hyperthermia due to dehydration. Heat stroke is extreme hypothermia with<lb />
thermoregulatory failure and central nervous system dysfunction. What caus-<lb />
es heat exhaustion or stroke is failure of heat-dissipating mechanisms or an<lb />
overwhelming heat stress leading to a rise in core temperature, dehydration<lb />
and salt depletion. . . . , u<lb />
Although children and the elderly are at the most nsk, it s important that<lb />
everybody knows the proper precautions to take to avoid heat exhaustion or<lb />
stroke. First, stress the importance of proper conditioningdon't over do<lb />
yourself, especially if you're in 90-95 degree weather. Also, maintain as much<lb />
skin exposure as possible in hot, humid conditions while using proper sun<lb />
block protection. Most importantly, avoid dehydration with proper fluids<lb />
during activity or exercise (clear liquids with no carbonation or caffeine.)<lb />
Doctors suggest eight ounces of fluid intake for every 15 minutes ot moder-<lb />
ate exercise. <lb />
Another tool for avoiding heat exhaustion or stroke is to know the symp-<lb />
toms for both and to get inside as soon as possible. The signs and symptoms<lb />
of heat exhaustion<lb />
are: fatigue, weak-<lb />
ness, dizziness, vom-<lb />
iting due to nausea,<lb />
headache, profuse<lb />
sweating, intense<lb />

Summer fun at the Student Recreation Center<lb />
ZINA BRILEY<lb />
STUK WRITKB<lb />
Summer has officially arrived and the gang at<lb />
the newly-opened Student Recreation Center<lb />
is prepared for it all.<lb />
This semester has been a very successful<lb />
one, due to the many spectacular events<lb />
kicked off bv its grand opening Jan. 13 and fol-<lb />
lowed bv the Annual 3-on-3 Schick Superhoop<lb />
Basketball Tournament, which brought in<lb />
teams from all over the east coast. The ulti-<lb />
mate stress reliever. Exam Jam, the mega out-<lb />
door hit and the christening of the outdoor<lb />
pool were also significant events for the SRC.<lb />
Throughout the semester, several stu-<lb />
dents and faculty members took part in<lb />
Adventure, RtnessL.E.R, and Intramural<lb />
Programs that kept the staff at SRC busy.<lb />
"We have witnessed a number of partici-<lb />
pants come through our doors and the summer semester looks just as promis-<lb />
inE said Intramural Director David Gaskins.<lb />
Now that things are rolling at the SRC, they need the students and fac-<lb />
ultv to continue their perfect attendance. This summer ihe SRC will ofter<lb />
things such as Alive .After Five on June 12 and 16 and again on July 10 and<lb />
July- 24. This special event includes refreshments, music and the company ot<lb />
entertaining student staff members.<lb />
"We expect the number of partici-<lb />
pants to decrease a little, but we<lb />
hope that the students that are here<lb />
take part in the climbing wall work-<lb />
shop or the session on how to<lb />
rollerblade and team up with their<lb />
friends and play intramural soft-<lb />
ball said Kari Brown, assistant<lb />
director of fitness and instructional<lb />
programs.<lb />
So be sure to pop in the SRC and do<lb />
a little weight workout to keep that<lb />
body in mint condition, and if not<lb />
the weight room, maybe an aerobic<lb />
session is more your speed. And<lb />
after one of those work-outs you<lb />
could wade around in the indoor<lb />
pool and on nice days you can keep<lb />
up your summer glow and lay out by<lb />
the outdoor pool.<lb />
If vou are not the fitness type and<lb />
don't like to be cooped up, try one of<lb />
the Jeiuure Programs and go<lb />
backpacking (June 6-8) or canoeing (Jury 9). Be sure to check the sign up<lb />
dates for these programs or vou might find yourself in a p.ck-up game ot bas-<lb />
ketball or doing a few laps around the indoor track, but that won t be so bad<lb />
liecause after those you can stop by the Rxxl Court and pick up a healthy-<lb />
snack that will keep you guilt free. . ,<lb />
You can do all this Monday - Thursday 6 a.m9 p.m Friday 6 a.m6 p.m.<lb />
David Hart and Samone Johnson enjoy the pool party at the rec center last<lb />
week. More of these parties will be held during the summer.<lb />

Winning coach<lb />
retires from<lb />
baseball team<lb />
AP - Gary Overton has resigned as<lb />
head coach of the East Carolina<lb />
University baseball team, said<lb />
Director of Athletics Mike<lb />
Hamrick.<lb />
Overton has coached the Pirates<lb />
since 1984, when he took over for<lb />
Hal Baird. He compiled a record of<lb />
427-237-1.<lb />
"I am proud of the accomplish-<lb />
ments the program has achieved<lb />
during the last 13 years Overton<lb />
said Monday in a statement<lb />
released from the university. "Now,<lb />
I'm looking forward to spending<lb />

Under Ovcrton's guidance, the<lb />
Pirates won Colonial Athletic<lb />

1987, 1989,1990,1991 and 1993.<lb />
The university said it will begin<lb />
