SAFETY AND TRANSPORTATION ISSUES<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Two students hospitalized after collapsing at a late-night party are<lb />
evidence of the popularity of a new and dangerous "designer drug<lb />
A 22-year-old ECU student, and a 21-year-old Pitt Community<lb />
College student were found unconscious on the front lawn of 506 E.<lb />
10th St. on April 4. Several members of the Sigma Pi Fraternity, who<lb />
were sponsering a late-night party, notified the Greenville Rescue<lb />
Squad when they found the students on their lawn, unable to<lb />
breathe.<lb />
Rescue personnel arrived on the scene at 3:46 a.m. and found the<lb />
students in a coma-like state. The students were taken to Pitt<lb />
County Memorial Hospital and placed on respirators. Both students<lb />
were released from the hospital on April 5.<lb />
Greenville Police found a Coke bottle filled with a clear liquid at<lb />
the scene. Analysis by the State Bureau of Investigations revealed<lb />
the liquid to be gamma hydroxy butric, or GHB. GHB, also known as<lb />
scoops and liquid ecstasy, is a clear, oily liquid which, when ingested,<lb />
gives users a quick high, followed by heavy sedation.<lb />
Using alchohol as a chaser to GHB is potentially deadly. The mix-<lb />
ture may cause extremely slow breathing or total respiratory collapse.<lb />
GHB can be made at home using chemicals, but officials warn that<lb />
unskilled "kitchen chemists" could produce samples with unknown<lb />
side effects.<lb />
Pitt County Memorial Hospital has documented several cases<lb />
involving GHB in the last 30-60 days. While this drug is not illegal to<lb />
possess, police are still investigating where the students obtained it.<lb />
Jeff Yurfest, president of Sigma Pi, expressed concern that GHB<lb />
is becoming too popular and people were associating it with fraterni-<lb />
ties.<lb />
"They were downtown drinking and they came here during a late<lb />
night Yurfest said. "They apparently took the GHB, but I have no<lb />
idea if they took it here or not. I got home from work and there were<lb />
two people passed out in our yard<lb />
Yurfest said he fears the incident will cause people to associate<lb />
the drug with the Greek system.<lb />
"Neither of them were members of this fraternity or of the Greek<lb />
system Yurfest said. "They just happened to be here when they<lb />
collapsed. It could have happened anywhere, but it kind of sucks<lb />
that it happened here<lb />
Yurfest also emphasized that the house on 10th Street is the<lb />
home of a few fraternity members and not the Sigma Pi fraternity<lb />
house.<lb />
"We have never had this kind of problem here Yurfest said. "It<lb />
isn't like someone was passing it GHB out from the fraternity. It's<lb />
a shame after all the effort that the Greeks have put in to clean up<lb />
our image on this campus that something like this happened<lb />
Students said the incident reflects the popularity GHB has<lb />
gained in the Greenville area.<lb />
"It's big on campus said ECU student Rebecca Ann Reynaud.<lb />
"It's all around. It's at the bars and its in the parties<lb />
There have been conflicting reports over whether or not GHB<lb />
can be detected in a drink. The high absorption rate of the drug<lb />
often prevents it from being detected in the emergency room.<lb />
"It does have a very strong taste said another student Ted<lb />
Rowell. "It's very salty<lb />
Donna Walsh .director of the Office of Health Promotion and<lb />
Well-being, said GHB is not classified as a date-rape drug because it<lb />
does have a taste.<lb />
"It has a slightly salty taste that people are overcoming by mixing<lb />
with cinnamon Walsh said.<lb />
Chris Arline, president of the Inter-Fraternity Council at ECU,<lb />
also had some comments on the incident regarding possible sanc-<lb />
tions against Sigma Pi.<lb />
"At this time I have seen no documentation that would indicate<lb />
Sigma Pi had anything to do with this Arline said. "I think that it<lb />
was just bad luck that it happened at a late night where a lot of their<lb />
brothers live<lb />
Arline also said the Greek system would try to arrange for speak-<lb />
ers on the subject to come to try to inform people about the dangers<lb />
of using GHB.<lb />
"I have done research on this drug since this happened and the<lb />
Greek system will be trying to spread the word that this stuff is a bad<lb />
thing Arline said.<lb />
Greenville Police said that they were put on full alert after the<lb />
incident. The Food and Drug Administration had been supplying the<lb />
department with information about the drug.<lb />
Above is a representation of the molecular structure of gamma hydroxy buturic. Also known as GHB,<lb />
scoops, or liquid ecstasy, the drug has been gaining popularity in the Greenville area and nearly claimed<lb />
the lives of two local students earlier this month.<lb />
Effects of GHB scare reach<lb />
farther than ECU campus<lb />
Designer drug proves<lb />
deadly<lb />
GREENVILLE (AP) - An unapproved<lb />
bodybuilding drug that nearly killed two<lb />
East Carolina students earlier this month is<lb />
having a resurgence in North Carolina, a doc-<lb />
tor said.<lb />
Gamma hydroxy buturic (GHB), illegal in<lb />
two states, cannot be legally marketed<lb />
nationwide, the Food and Drug<lb />
Administration has said.<lb />
But in the past eight months, a Texas<lb />
teen-ager was killed and a Georgia woman<lb />
lapsed into a coma after ingesting the drug,<lb />
according to the Centers for Disease Control<lb />
and Prevention (CDCP).<lb />
The two college students collapsed April<lb />
4 after mixing the drug with alcohol at a<lb />
party near East Carolina. Both needed respi-<lb />
rators to resuscitate them.<lb />
But Dr. Sven Normann, of the Florida<lb />
Poison Information Center, said word has<lb />
gotten out that GHB produces euphoria,<lb />
increased sensitivity to touch and drowsi-<lb />
ness. It's also been hyped as an aphrodisiac,<lb />
he said.<lb />
The side effects include breathing prob-<lb />
lems and - when the drug is mixed with alco-<lb />
hol and other depressants - vomiting,<lb />
seizures, loss of bladder control and amnesia,<lb />

Summer graduates allowed to walk in May<lb />
Officials change position<lb />

STI'DF.NT ORGANIZATIONS<lb />
Graduating seniors with courses to be com-<lb />
pleted in summer sessions will now have the<lb />
choice of graduating in either the spring or fall<lb />
Commencement ceremonies.<lb />
The decision was made and announced by<lb />
university officials on Friday, April 11.<lb />
"We need to carefully examine our policies<lb />
to make sure that we are being fair to all our<lb />
degree candidates Chancellor Richard Eakin<lb />
said. "ECU's size makes it virtually impossible<lb />
for us to hold just one graduation ceremony<lb />
during an academic year<lb />
The decision was made in hopes of avoid-<lb />
ing problems for students whose families had<lb />
already made plans to attend the May 10 cer-<lb />
emony<lb />
"The December ceremony was established<lb />
specifically to recognize students who com-<lb />
pleted their degree requirements during the<lb />
summer and fall Eakin said. "But we under-<lb />
stand that many students who plan to finish<lb />
their courses in the summer would rather par-<lb />
ticipate in the May ceremony because it would<lb />
be inconvenient for them to attend in<lb />
December<lb />
The only stipulation for seniors finishing<lb />
their course requirements in the summer is<lb />
that their names will be printed in the<lb />
December program rather than the May pro-<lb />
gram.<lb />
The decision applies to those students who<lb />
will be finishing in summer sessions this year.<lb />
University officials are reviewing the situa-<lb />
tion and trying to devise a plan that will<lb />
accommodate all students when it comes to<lb />
time to graduate.<lb />
A recent resolution was written by the stu-<lb />
dent government association (SGA) in support<lb />
f those seniors fulfilling their course require-<lb />
ments during the summer.<lb />
The resolution state that no summer grad-<lb />
uation is available to those students complet-<lb />
ing their course requirements during the sum-<lb />
mer. It also said that undue hardship is creat-<lb />
ed for those students and their families who<lb />
would have to participate in the Fall<lb />
Commencement.<lb />
Since most students will leave the<lb />
Greenville area to follow their careers or con-<lb />
tinue their education elsewhere, the resolu-<lb />
tion listed this as another reason for reversing<lb />
the decision.<lb />
Another point of importance to SGA which<lb />
was included in the resolution was that seniors<lb />
should leave ECU on a positive note.<lb />
This resolution gives all seniors lacking<lb />
summer school credits the full support of the<lb />
SGA. The SGA would like to see a policy<lb />
allowing all seniors to participate in Spring<lb />
Commencement.<lb />

money to extend the Greenville) Greenway<lb />
said Bike Rally Chairman Jeff Yurfest.<lb />
The Greenway is a paved path through the<lb />
wetlands in Greenville for people to walk and<lb />
ride bikes along while touring the wetlands.<lb />
The rally will con54clude with a five mile<lb />
bike ride. This will start at the Town<lb />
Commons, go through the Greenway, along<lb />
the bottom of College Hill, to Dogwood<lb />
Hollow, then past St. Peter's Church and fin-<lb />
ish at the Town Commons.<lb />
Participants in the bike ride will include<lb />
members of the community ranging from boy<lb />
scouts to ECU students.<lb />
After the bike ride there will be a family<lb />
picnic, eco-scavenger hunt, entertainment and<lb />
prize give-aways.<lb />
Mayor Nancy Jenkins and ECU Geology<lb />
Professor Dr. Stan Riggs will also speak.<lb />
The entertainment wiil include music from<lb />
members of Purple Schooibus, Hipbone,<lb />
Midnight Blue and the felly Smith Band.<lb />
The groups will raise money for the<lb />

a T-shirt people r-u.jt register for the rally. The<lb />
cost of registration is $10, which covers the<lb />
cost of the T-shirt.<lb />
"We got sponsors to cover the cost of the<lb />
T-shirts so the money we get will be profit for<lb />
the Greenway Yurfest said.<lb />
According to GAIA Secretary Sarah<lb />
McConnell, 80 percent of the proceeds will<lb />
benefit Greenway, TO percent will go to GAIA<lb />
and 10 percent will go to Natural Extremes.<lb />
Last year's rally raised over $1,000.<lb />
"We are currently in the process of putting<lb />
up fliers across campus about registering<lb />
McConnell said.<lb />
The bike ride will begin at 3 p.m. At 1:30<lb />
p.m. there will be a nature walk down the<lb />
Greenway guided by Biology Professor Dr.<lb />

ARLINCiTON, Va. (AP) - Stuart Orkin, a developmental biologist at Harvard Medical School<lb />
says human cloning has "inherent risks that I think are unacceptable But that does not mean<lb />
lie thinks research into it should be banned.<lb />
"We may miss the boat in a sense" if all study of human asexual reproduction is outlawed,<lb />
Orkin told the National Bioethics Advisory Commission on Sunday. "There is some advantage<lb />
for research to go on<lb />
President Clinton formed the 18-member commission to study implications of human cloning<lb />
after a Scottish scientist in February presented Dolly the sheep, the first-known successful clone<lb />
of an adult mammal.<lb />
As the panel mulls over the ethical, scientific and policy ramifications of human cloning,<lb />
Clinton has banned use of federal money on such experimentation and suggested a moratorium<lb />
on private studies.<lb />
Both Orkin and Janet Rossant, a professor of molecular and medical genetics at the University<lb />
of Toronto, appeared to pique the committee's interest when they agreed that human cloning<lb />
may be premature while so much is left to study in animals.<lb />
"Is it possible that we can do most of the basic science on animals without ever creating an<lb />
entity which many people find offensive?" asked commission member Thomas Murray, director<lb />
of the Center for Biomedical Ethics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.<lb />
Orkin did not advocate widespread cloning of animals. Plenty of research is left to do that<lb />
would not necessitate further cloning of any kind, he said. But researching human cloning could<lb />
lead to major advancements in such fields as organ transplants, he said.<lb />
"I'm not comfortable with the notion of banning any kind of research Orkin said. "However,<lb />
I am comfortable with moratoria on the implantation" of cloned human embryos because of the<lb />
"inherent risks that 1 think are unacceptable<lb />
Rossant said because not all animal research is directly applicable to humans, the board should<lb />
"avoid prohibiting legitimate research into animals or humans (because) it really has big poten-<lb />
tial for immense benefits in the future<lb />
The panel's mandate takes it beyond scientific ramifications of cloning into the hazy realm of<lb />
ethics.<lb />
Religious groups already have testified before the commission, which is now dealing with<lb />
whether to incorporate religious beliefs into the recommendations to Clinton.<lb />
"It's one thing to respect their beliefs but it becomes difficult to incorporate that to make<lb />
public policy Murray said.<lb />
Commission member Bernard Lo, director of the medical e tin. program at the University of<lb />
California, San Francisco, questioned whether scientific review boards should ask the motives of<lb />
laboratories seeking funds for future cloning projects. Others inwlved in genetic studies are not<lb />
required to answer such questions.<lb />

And 92 percent, including 88 percent of smokers, believe the tobacco<lb />

HICKORY, N.C. (AP) - More and<lb />
more cities and counties are offering<lb />
tax rebates to companies that build<lb />
or expand plants - raising the stakes<lb />
in the fierce competition for new<lb />
industries and their jobs.<lb />
"You don't do it because you<lb />
want to. You do it because you have<lb />
to said Union County economic<lb />
development director Lee Correll,<lb />
whose county lost a S.V5 million Wal-<lb />
Mart distribution center to<lb />
Pageland, S.C in 1995 after that<lb />
state offered twice as much in<lb />
incentives.<lb />
Local and state officials across<lb />
the country are wrestling with the<lb />
complex issues of whether to sacri-<lb />
fice potential tax revenues in order<lb />
to get more, and to whom they<lb />
should give them.<lb />
The fight heated up in North<lb />
Carolina after the state Supreme<lb />
Court last year ruled it constitution-<lb />
al for local governments to offer<lb />
incentives. Winston-Salem lawyer<lb />
William Maready had sued aftet his<lb />
city and Forsyth County gave more<lb />
than $13 million to 24 companies,<lb />
and a lower court ruling in his favor<lb />
had chilled local government<lb />
recruiting efforts.<lb />
Cabarrus County was among the<lb />
first to try something different: It<lb />
used tax rebates to get Corning Inc.<lb />
to build a massive fiber-optics plant<lb />
that will create more than 600 jobs.<lb />
Other recruiters took note of<lb />
Cabarrus' success, and dozens of<lb />
local governments have adopted or<lb />
are considering similar policies.<lb />
In 1996. the N.C. General<lb />
Assembly approved a reduction in<lb />
the corporate income tax; job-cre-<lb />
ation tax credits for all 100 counties:<lb />
and worker training, machinery and<lb />
equipment tax credits. The compa-<lb />
ny could get $19 million from newly<lb />
approved state tax credits by 2000.<lb />
The county promised to return<lb />
85 percent of the company's proper-<lb />
ty tax payments for the first five<lb />
years.<lb />
Corning won't say how much it is<lb />
investing, but county officials esti-<lb />
mate the company would get S8 mil-<lb />
lion in tax breaks if it invests $300<lb />
million.<lb />
Cabarrus Economic<lb />
Development Director Maurice<lb />

The grant policies work like this:<lb />
A company that builds a new plant<lb />
and pays property taxes for five years<lb />
can get much of that money back in<lb />
the form of a grant. The grants are in<lb />
addition to more traditional assis-<lb />
tance such as land, site work, water<lb />
and sewer line extensions and roads.<lb />
North Carolina local govern-<lb />
ments are requiring minimum<lb />
investments ranging from $500,000<lb />
under a proposed Union County<lb />
policy to S3 million in Cabarrus<lb />
County. Many localities have set up<lb />
sliding scales that tie the size of<lb />
grants to the amount companies<lb />
invest, although Catavvba has also<lb />
linked them to factors such as jobs<lb />
created and type of industry.<lb />
Competing for industry used to<lb />
be a game played largely by the<lb />
states.<lb />
North Carolina pioneered the<lb />
idea M) years ago by developing a<lb />
highly regarded community college<lb />
system, offering free job training and<lb />
helping with utilities, roads and tax<lb />
credits.<lb />
Other Southern states responded<lb />
by sweetening their financial pack-<lb />
ages, and now North Carolina's<lb />
incentives pale in comparison.<lb />
In the early 1990s, North<lb />
Carolina couldn't match the esti-<lb />
mated 300 million in incentives<lb />
that South Carolina offered BMW to<lb />
locate in Greer.<lb />
Many economists think govern-<lb />
ments should stop competing.<lb />
"It's very rare you ever get back<lb />
enough in taxes to make up for w hat<lb />
you gave up said James Smith, a<lb />
professor of finance at I NC Chapel<lb />
Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business<lb />
School. "The argument is everybody<lb />

of GHB overdoses since February.<lb />
"The possibility exists that the<lb />
person could use GHB and be left in<lb />
what we call a persisting vegetative<lb />
state said Dr. William Meggs. "F<lb />
would go on record unequivocally<lb />

In December, the State Bureau<lb />
of Investigation released a report<lb />
about GHB warning of its develop-<lb />
ing reputation for causing hallucina-<lb />
tions, heightened sexual desire and<lb />
euphoria. The report also said the<lb />
drug has started popping up in<lb />
nightclubs, college campuses and<lb />
areas where high school students<lb />
congregate.<lb />
The ECU students said GHB is<lb />
considered en vogue in college cir-<lb />

"It makes you feel like you're<lb />

The federal Drug Enforcement<lb />
Administration wants to have GHB<lb />
classified as an illegal narcotic, simi-<lb />
lar to cocaine. Rhode Island and<lb />
Georgia have already outlawed it and<lb />
five others - California, Florida,<lb />
Texas, Massachusetts and Hawaii -<lb />
have bills banning the drug in differ-<lb />
ent stages of enactment.<lb />
At ECU, the overdoses were a<lb />
wake-up call to university officials,<lb />
who are planning a program next fall<lb />
on GHB and other trendy drugs.<lb />
The Inter-Fraternity Council, a<lb />
student association of fraternities,<lb />
will help organize the event, presi-<lb />
dent Christopher Arline said.<lb />
"It scares the hell out of us, and<lb />
we don't want to lose any of our<lb />

Already, the office of Health<lb />

dean of students. Officials took fur-<lb />
ther action after the overdoses, con-<lb />

information to residence halls.<lb />
Greenville police are trying to<lb />
find the supplier of the GHB that<lb />
led to the two overdoses, Lt. John<lb />

A young man who said he lived<lb />

W: would like to take a moment out of our busy lives to spread a little sunshine. (We know,<lb />
that's not realty like us, but we're in a giving mood today.)<lb />
Our fellow student medium, The Rebel, has recently won two prestigious awards for their work<lb />
on the issue that came out last year. Our other colleagues over at Expressions also garnered<lb />
national recognition and praise last semester for their efforts on their publication.<lb />
In case you don't know, and shame on you if you don't, The Redeis ECU's student literary and<lb />
arts magazine and Expressions is our school's publication focusing on minority issues. Both mag-<lb />
azines are totally created by students. The submissions are all by students, and the editorial<lb />
staffs of both are comprised of students, as well. The Rebel is only published once a year and<lb />
Expressions comes out twice every semester, which is often a reason that knowledge of their exis-<lb />
tence is somewhat limited on campus.<lb />
?Ye would like to see 'hat situation change. We would like for more people to open them-<lb />
selves up and read these superior productions of our fellow students. We would like for more<lb />
students to try and actively participate in the creation of these publications.<lb />
And with the accolades that these two magazines have recently been given, perhaps more<lb />
focused attention can be brought to bear on them.<lb />
rfe at TEC applaud the staff and contributors of The Rebel and Expressions for a job well done.<lb />
Both magazines deserve all of the recognition that has come their way. Good luck in the future.<lb />

Can't we all just get along:<lb />
?<lb />
Recently, The East Carolinian ran an<lb />
advertisement from a group called<lb />
Another Way. The group is a Christian<lb />
organization of ex-homosexuals who<lb />
maintain that God fulfilled their<lb />
needs and therefore healed them of<lb />
their h"noscualit. I've heard a lot of<lb />
talk about the ad, mostly criticizing it,<lb />
but I figure, "Hey, this is America.<lb />
They can say what they want<lb />
While exiting the offices of The<lb />
East Carolinian yesterday, I ran into an<lb />
acquaintance of mine who happens to<lb />
be a very active member of B-GLAD<lb />
(Bisexuals, Gays and Lesbians<lb />
Advocating Diversity). He was a little<lb />
ruffled under the collar about this ad,<lb />
and informed me that he was going to<lb />
write "screaming letters to the editor"<lb />
and launch a massive counter-ad cam-<lb />
paign.<lb />
Now, I have nothing against the<lb />
counter-ad campaign. Like I said, this<lb />
is America. But when I got to thinking<lb />
about the "screaming letters to the<lb />
editor" bit, I realized that the fellow<lb />
has no grounds for them. Actually,<lb />
they might undermine his position,<lb />
and that of B-GLAD's, severely.<lb />
So I asked him, "Well, have you<lb />
called this 1-800 number in the ad?"<lb />
"I checked out their Web site (also<lb />
in the ad) and I decided that anyone<lb />
who says that AIDS was the best thing<lb />
that ever happened to them (homo-<lb />
sexuals) isn't worth talking to he<lb />
said.<lb />
Now, I'm not sure I'd agree that<lb />
AIDS is the best thing that might ever<lb />
happen to me, but I did know a fellow<lb />
who had a high possibility of being<lb />
HIV positive. Strange as it might<lb />
sound to us normal folks, this fellow<lb />
did count that as a blessing. He saw<lb />
even the possibility as a sign that he<lb />
ought to pursue a career helping AIDS<lb />
victims. I bet all those people he's<lb />
helping right now are thinking his pos-<lb />
sibility of having the disease was the<lb />
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR<lb />
best thing that ever happened to<lb />
them. (He graduated and I never<lb />
found out if he was truly positive or<lb />
not.)<lb />
More importantly, this conversa-<lb />
tion made mc realize three things<lb />
a!xut the actions of B-GLAD in thi<lb />
situation which are quite revealing I<lb />
hope they're not an example of how<lb />
the members of B-G1.AD normally<lb />
conduct themselves.<lb />
First, I'm all for diversity, and I<lb />
thought that B-GLAD was too. It would<lb />
seem to me that if the members of B-<lb />
GLAD were really advocating diversity<lb />
(as their name suggests), that they<lb />
ought to be celebrating the fact that<lb />
there are homosexuals out there who<lb />
hold a view opposing theirs. That is<lb />
what diversity means, after all. If B-<lb />
GLAD does not support diversity, but is<lb />
rather just another bunch of political<lb />
whiners (and I hope this isn't the case),<lb />
then perhaps they ought to change their<lb />
name.<lb />
Secondly, if B-GLAD is successful in<lb />
their campaign to have the editor refrain<lb />
from printing ads pertaining to people's<lb />
beliefs in sexuality and religion, then<lb />
they are shooting themselves in the foot.<lb />
The same First Amendment rights that<lb />
allow B-GLAD to print ads for Blue<lb />
Jeans Day and Pride Week allow the<lb />
people at Another Way to run ads as<lb />
well.<lb />
And third, given die lack of research<lb />
done by members of B-GLAD, and<lb />
given the snap judgment of my friend in<lb />
the offices of The East Carolinian, I<lb />
would have to say that this Christian<lb />
group is a victim of stereotype and big-<lb />
otry. 1 felt like I had stepped into an<lb />
alternate dimension - the Christians<lb />
were promoting love and the gay rights<lb />
group was being prejudiced. Perhaps<lb />
once a member of Another Way has been<lb />
contacted and a dialogue is opened<lb />
between the two groups, then some<lb />
judgments can be made.<lb />
I once read a Peanuts comic strip in<lb />
which Snoopy was writing a book. It was<lb />
a book of theology and its title was Has<lb />
It Ever Occurred To You That You<lb />
Might Be Wrong? I could plainly see<lb />
from my friend's expressions that it had<lb />
not, in the least, occurred to him that he<lb />
misfit Ik- wrong. I think he rruv bet e<lb />
been afraid to consider that possibility.<lb />
I can understand why. The world<lb />
view of Another Way, if it is right, would<lb />
mean my friend would have to do some<lb />
changing in the way he thinks. It might<lb />
mean he'd have to be uncomfortable for<lb />
a while. But isn't that what diversity is<lb />
for? Isn't the main benefit of diversity<lb />
that the presence of other ideas and<lb />
beliefs challenges us to understand our-<lb />
selves and our own beliefs, as well as<lb />
considering the opinions of others?<lb />
Diversity is a two (or three or four) way<lb />
street.<lb />
In closing, I would like to comment<lb />
that 1 do understand why the members<lb />
of B-GLAD feel as hostile as they do.<lb />
The Christian groups on campus have. .<lb />
not acted in a way that is very loving<lb />
toward homosexuals. In my Bible there<lb />
are lot of commands about not judging<lb />
others and loving one's neighbor.<lb />
Last week, during Pride Week, I<lb />
overheard quite a few hateful and hurt-<lb />
ful conversations from people who are<lb />
supposed to be God's representatives.<lb />
Only yesterday I heard about an inci-<lb />
dent at the Inter-Varsity Christian<lb />
Fellowship where a female student was<lb />
driven to tears because she wanted to<lb />
point out that the attitude of some<lb />
Christians was inconsistent with their<lb />
claims that God's love is in them. She<lb />
was harshly treated and, as stated, dri-<lb />
ven to tears.<lb />
"vfc don't all have to agree. America<lb />
isn't about agreeing. But if we can't talk<lb />
to each other and team from one anoth-<lb />
er's ideas, then somebody needs to call<lb />
up George Washington and Thomas<lb />
Jefferson and let. them know their<lb />
"grand experiment" has failed.<lb />
It's unfair to let non-grads walk<lb />
lb the Editor,<lb />
Recently, we, the student body of<lb />
East Carolina University, have been<lb />
subjected to the whining of a group of<lb />
students who feel that they should be<lb />
allowed to graduate this spring even<lb />
though they still have one or two<lb />
classes left to complete. This group of<lb />
students feel that it is unfair that they<lb />
were not at least told they would be<lb />
unable to graduate at the next cere-<lb />
mony.<lb />
However, if said students will con-<lb />
sider the definition of graduation,<lb />
they will then realize that it is both<lb />
reasonable and fair to prevent them<lb />
from graduating at that time and,<lb />
moreover, that any notification of this<lb />
fact is simply unnecessary.<lb />
Graduation is a ceremony at which<lb />
students who have successfully com-<lb />
pleted an entire course of study are<lb />
recognized for their accomplishment.<lb />
Thus, if a student lacks even one class<lb />
from said course of study, he is not eli-<lb />
gible for graduation. This fact is so<lb />
obvious that it should not need stat-<lb />
ing. The inability of the students in<lb />
question to comprehend this fact says<lb />
to me that they have not learned<lb />
much from their time here at ECU<lb />
and should not be allowed to graduate<lb />
anyway. In conclusion, it would unfair<lb />
to the many students who have com-<lb />
pleted their studies (and deserve the<lb />
recognition of their achievements<lb />
that a diploma represents) to force<lb />
them to share their special day with<lb />
those who have not.<lb />

However the strangest thing of all<lb />

-4c seems that in 1993, four cellists<lb />
at the Sibelus Academy in Helsinki,<lb />
Finland, got the idea of playing<lb />
MetaUica on their cellos. So, they<lb />
raked through their MetaUica records<lb />
searching for playable songs. Due to<lb />
the ohysical demand of cellos, songs<lb />
with, ast solos were out of the ques-<lb />

playable ones to find songs that would<lb />

The CD contains material span-<lb />

moments to get accustomed to, but<lb />
once the other cellos join it, it<lb />
becomes a tight song that flows<lb />

A seemingly unusual song for the<lb />

"Goodbye Rom this, I was able to<lb />

followed a progressive maturity all in<lb />

they're not onto anyone else's sound.<lb />
It's easy to tell that these guys are<lb />

the lyrics is that they don't fit into<lb />
context with the music that is being<lb />
played. The lyrics move in 3 totally<lb />
different direction. And although they<lb />
move in separate ways, they find their<lb />
way back to one solemn purpose. At<lb />
the end of the song, the message is<lb />
complete.<lb />
The next track on the record is<lb />
called "Eagle It's an acoustic song<lb />
set to a slower pace than the rest of<lb />
the record. There's a big buildup the<lb />
first time around. It's sore of a tease,<lb />
they don't take you anywhere else,<lb />
just right back to the verse. This is<lb />
good writing and a descent display of<lb />
dynamics. You aren't let down that the<lb />
song doesn't pick up. It actually helps<lb />
you appreciate it a bit more. As a<lb />
result, the listener is positioned for<lb />
listening to the tunes that follow on<lb />
the record. Like I said, it's good writ-<lb />
ing.<lb />
The song on the record that I<lb />
believe holds the most promise is<lb />
"Cow Tipping Anybody that's a<lb />
good 'ol country boy will understand<lb />
the true meaning behind a song like<lb />
this. What's funny about it is that<lb />
leVbsseur puts himself in the cow's<lb />

Circumcised men have varied sex<lb />
COLLEGE PRESS SERVICE<lb />
'Circumcision offers virtually no health<lb />
benefits but men who are circumcised<lb />
-tend to have more varied sex, a recent-<lb />
ly published study said.<lb />
The report by University of<lb />
Chicago researchers found no signifi-<lb />
cant differences between circumcised<lb />
and uncircumcised men in their likeli-<lb />
hood of contracting sexually transmit-<lb />
ted diseases. But the study in the<lb />
Journal of the American Medical<lb />
Association did find "significant differ-<lb />
ences between circumcised and uncir-<lb />
cumcised men in terms of their sexual<lb />
practices<lb />
"The difference was greatest for<lb />
masturbation - ironically a practice<lb />
that circumcision was once thought to<lb />
limit the study said. It said 47 per-<lb />
cent of circumcised men reported<lb />
masturbating at least once a month vs.<lb />
34 percent for their uncircumcised<lb />
peers.<lb />
The difference in frequency can-<lb />
not be explained but it does "cast<lb />
doubt on the Victorian-era notion that<lb />
circumcision reduces the urge to mas-<lb />
turbate the study said.<lb />
In addition, circumcised men were<lb />
found to be nearly 1.4 times more like-<lb />
ly to engage in heterosexual oral sex<lb />
than uncircumcised men. They were<lb />
also more likely to have had homosex-<lb />
ual oral sex and heterosexual anal<lb />
intercourse.<lb />
The study was based on an analysis<lb />
of data collected from a sample of<lb />
1,410 men, aged 18 to 59, in the<lb />
United States, which has one of the<lb />
world's highest non-religious circum-<lb />
cision rates.<lb />

ASSISTANT LIFESTYLE EDITOR<lb />
Larry FTynt, the porn king who first gave life to Hustler magazine, has received<lb />
a lot of publicity lately. When acclaimed film director Milos Forman released his<lb />
controversial movie. The Peopkvs. Larry Flynt, everyone from critics to talk show<lb />
hosts had Frynt on their tongues. Even Mr. Fhnt himself went public, boasting<lb />
to the world that he, like the film claims, is a symbol of American free speech,<lb />
no matter what you think of him or his questionable publication.<lb />
Pornography has been a hot issue for feminists for a long time, and this<lb />
Thursday ECU will get the rare opportunity to engage in the issue when Laura<lb />
Kipnis, one of the most vocal feminists dealing with pornography gives a talk<lb />
entitled "National tomographies; Transnational Bodies<lb />
Kipnis has actively studied the social complexities of pornography long<lb />
before Woody Harrclson portrayed Frynt on the big screen. She is possibly best<lb />
known within the academic world for her 1992 essay entitled "(Male) Desire<lb />
and (Female) Disgust: Reading Hustler<lb />
Now that Frynt has been somewhat embraced by Hollywood and main-<lb />
stream media, Kipnis is more active than evet She is currently one of the most<lb />
cited scholars when discussing the controversy of pornography.<lb />
While much of the Larry Flynt debate has revolved around the issue of free<lb />
speech, Kipnis has moved beyond that. Her current work examines pornography<lb />
as culture, specifically a transgressionai culture that has connections with the<lb />
avant garde aesthetic<lb />
Kipnis' professional and academic history has more than qualified her as an<lb />
appropriate voice for such a controversial issue. She was trained in the arts, earn-<lb />
ing her M.FA at the Novia Scotia College of Art and Design in 1982; is cur-<lb />
rently an Associate professor of radio, television and film at Northwestern<lb />
University in Chicago; has published two books on sexual politics, Bound and<lb />
Gaged: Pornography and the Politics ofFantasy in America mA Ecstasy Unhmted: On<lb />
Sex, Capital, Gender & Aesthetics; has written and directed several short videogra-<lb />
phics; and has presented talks on an and sex at many conferences.<lb />
Laura Karris<lb />
Her interests with pornography stem from both her<lb />
interests with the avant garde and a concern for social<lb />
justice.<lb />
"I don't come out of a traditional academic disci-<lb />
pline Kipnis stated during a phone interview. "The<lb />
study of pornography) is not just accepted across the<lb />
board. However, my approach doesn't get much eye<lb />
rolling because it is so political, dealing with class<lb />
Coming out of the art world, Kipnis didn't expect to<lb />
have a career turn as an academic. However, it was her<lb />
artwork that lead her into the academic circle and<lb />
allowed her to become a lively voice in the academic<lb />
dialogue.<lb />
"I would get invited to show my videos at academic conferences she<lb />
reflected. "Then someone asked me to write essays. So, I ended up with a<lb />
career that was split between me being a video artist and an essayist<lb />
When Kipnis allowed her scholarly skills to sink into the muddy waters of<lb />
pornography, she decidedly took a different approach than most traditional fem-<lb />
inists, instead on focusing on how pornography oppresses women, she asked,<lb />
"What other meanings circulate within pornography?"<lb />
What she discovered was that pornography illustrates gaps between social<lb />
classes. Focusing on the idea of class within pornography, Kipnis began to use<lb />
pornography as "a vehicle to talk about social issues that aren't talked about in<lb />
other media<lb />
Kipnis will deal with questions on how to talk about pornography within a<lb />
national context, addressing such topics as gender, class and politics.<lb />
In a nutshell, Kipnis will be talking about "the politics of pornography in the<lb />
current national politics<lb />
Kipnis' talk is sure to be an informative and engaging experience that wiU<lb />
spark some lively discussion. The lecture will be presented by the English<lb />
department as part of its Theory Colloquium Lecture Series on Thursday, April<lb />
17 at 4 p.m. in Room 2014 of the General Classroom Building. A reception will<lb />
follow in the English faculty lounge of the General Classroom Building. All are<lb />
welcome to attend.<lb />

To promote the grand opening of their<lb />
new club in North Myrtle Beach, S.C<lb />
the House of Blues is bringing the<lb />
jazz-influenced soul of the band Lake<lb />
Trout to Mendenhail's Brickyard from<lb />
Noon ur i! 1 p.m. tomorrow.<lb />
Lake Trout finds their home in the<lb />
Baltimore area, where they are one of<lb />
the premiere bands in the local music<lb />
scene. Lake Trout's sound is hard to<lb />
pin down. Not only does the band list<lb />
jazz greats Miles Davis, John Coltrane<lb />
and Grant Green as influences, but<lb />
also funksters The Meters and Curtis<lb />
Mayfield and current rap groups The<lb />
Pharcyde, Digable Planets, A Tribe<lb />
Called Quest, and The Roots. Sounds<lb />
like a great time for all.<lb />
The North Myrtle Beach House of<lb />
Blues itself has an impressive lineup<lb />
scheduled for their inaugural month<lb />
of May. The club will be christened on<lb />
May 4 with a performance by the<lb />
Blues Brothers (Dan Akroyd, Jim<lb />
Belushi (replacing his brother John)<lb />
and John Goodman) and the<lb />
Godfather of Soul himself, James<lb />
Brown. To say that James Brown is not<lb />
to be missed is an understatement.<lb />
Besides that amazing opening bill,<lb />
the club has booked quite a number of<lb />
other stellar performers to visit within<lb />
the first month. Names such as<lb />
Spearhead, Koko Taylor, John MayaU's<lb />
Bluesbreakcrs and Erykah Badu don't<lb />
just trickle off the tongue, they<lb />
impress greatly. Add Johnny Cash to<lb />
that list (yes, Johnny Cash), playing<lb />
not one date but two, and you've got a<lb />
schedule that can't be beaten.<lb />
If the House of Blues can keep this<lb />
up, and I feel quite certain that they<lb />
can, then this club should become one<lb />
of the main live musk attractions of<lb />
the Southeast.<lb />
It is to their credit that they recog-<lb />
nize the potential mass audience they<lb />
can draw from Southeastern universi-<lb />
ties, and that they have chosen ECU<lb />
as representative of the people the)'<lb />
hope to attract. So given their respect<lb />
for this university, it is only right that<lb />
we should support their appearance<lb />
on campus tomorrow by going to see<lb />
Lake Trout. Ill definitely be there.<lb />

UMass offers all-gay housing option<lb />
Cindy Sher<lb />
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY<lb />
Chris Savastano faced housing prob-<lb />
lems that most students at the<lb />
University of Massachusetts in<lb />
Amherst, Mass never have to deal<lb />
with.<lb />
When students in his dorm discov-<lb />
ered he was gay, they tampered with<lb />
his mail, broke into his room and even<lb />
threatened his life.<lb />
When Savastano heard about "2 in<lb />
20 a floor of all gay, lesbian and bisex-<lb />
ual students and their heterosexual<lb />
allies, he signed up immediately.<lb />
The first successful program of its<lb />
kind, "2 in 20" works to end hoirto-<lb />
phobia and to provide a supportive<lb />
environment for gay, lesbian, bisexual<lb />
and transgender students.<lb />
"When you're first coming out, it's<lb />
nice .and reaffirming Savastano, a<lb />
junior said. "You're not alone and iso-<lb />
lated. It's exactly what other people<lb />
are going through<lb />
Students asked the housing admin-<lb />
istration to initiate the floor in 1992<lb />
after many had faced problems similar<lb />
to Savastano's.<lb />
"It provides a sense of support and<lb />
comfort in a society that doesn't<lb />
always provide that to them said<lb />
Michael Gilbert, the director of hous-<lb />
ing services at UMass.<lb />
The floor began with ten residents<lb />
and has grown each year. It now has 33<lb />
residents and may expand to another<lb />
floor this fall.<lb />
The name "2 in 20" refers to sex<lb />
researcher Alfred C. Kinsey's claim<lb />
that one out of every ten people is gay.<lb />
Residents preferred the name "2 in<lb />
20" because 1 in 10" sounds lonely<lb />
the floor's resident assistant Donnie<lb />
Roberts said in an article that<lb />
appeared in Tie Chronicle of Higher<lb />
Education on Feb. 21.<lb />
Located on the fourth level of the<lb />
Mary Lyon dormitory, the floor also<lb />
provides unique programming for its<lb />
students. Residents have a drag bail<lb />
each semester in addition to an open<lb />
house for university faculty, staff and<lb />
students to learn about "2 in 20<lb />
The floor also has a Response<lb />
Room, otherwise known as a "safe<lb />
room which is available to any stu-<lb />
dent living in university housing who<lb />
is being harassed because of his or her<lb />
sexual orientation. The student may<lb />
use the "safe room" as a temporary<lb />
housing assignment.<lb />
"We adapt our programming to be<lb />
quite specific said Julie Robbins, res-<lb />
idence director of the floor, which has<lb />
the same housing fees as other dorms<lb />
at UMass. "Whereas they might have a<lb />
program on 'Homophobia 101' at<lb />
another dorm, they might have<lb />

AUGUSTA. Ga. (AP) - Tiger Woods' victory walk up the 18th fairway was<lb />
detoured by a wild hook off the final tee at the Masters, which was probably just<lb />

It is hard to imagine anyone capable of following in these footsteps.<lb />
His romp over Augusta National Golf Club evoked memories of the cold<lb />

Shortly after he drained a bending 4 12-foot putt for par on the final hole<lb />

Woods choked back tears as he embraced his parents.<lb />
"Every time I hug my mom and pop after a tournament, 1 know it's over he<lb />

Moments before the stabbing, a fight on the dance floor prompted the disc<lb />

Pratt was arrested at a nearby restaurant and told police he had fled to elude<lb />
Murphy's friends.<lb />
Pratt said Murphy and a group of his friends jumped him on the dance floor<lb />

consisted simply of shoving and pushing and then Murphy was cut.<lb />
' Pratt said he was crouching on the dance floor and that Murphy had him by<lb />

Patriots sweep Pirates over weekend<lb />
STEVE 1.0SEV<lb />
STAFF WRITF.lt<lb />
The Pirates came out of this weekend with hurt<lb />
pride and a damaged record. They lost all three of<lb />
their baseball games against the George Mason<lb />
Patriots. The Pirates come out of the weekend with<lb />
an overall 21-21 record and now fail to 7-8 in the<lb />
CAA.<lb />
A doubleheader was scheduled for Saturday, but<lb />
the rainy weather caused the second of the two to<lb />
be postponed until Sunday. The game that was<lb />
plaved that day was a rough one for both sides.<lb />
Both teams were chalking up hit after hit as they<lb />
came up to bat. The pitching staff of either team<lb />
could not stop the batters from blasting fiery<lb />
grounders and soaring flies. The defense of each<lb />
team had difficulty keeping the runners from<lb />
advancing.<lb />
"Poor defense was Lhe answer to our loss said<lb />
Pirates Head Coach Gary Overton.<lb />
Saturday's game was played in pouring rain and<lb />
at times had to be postponed for minutes because<lb />
of the driving rain. In the end and 44 runs later,<lb />
ECU had lost 17-27.<lb />
The first game on Sunday began with a promis-<lb />
ing start. The score remained 0-0 until the third<lb />
inning. Macon Jones hit a shallow fly to center field<lb />
that earned him a single. When Kevin Monroe<lb />
came up to bat, the Patriot pitcher tried to pick off<lb />
Jones leading off at first. The second time the<lb />
pitcher threw to first, Jones slid headfirst into the<lb />
bag. The ball ricocheted off his helmet and rolled to<lb />
the deep end of right field foul territory. Jones got<lb />
up and ran to second. A slow reaction by the Patriot<lb />
right fielder allowed Jones to steal third.<lb />
Right fielder Antaine Jones was hit by a wild<lb />
pitch while on first and quickly stole second base.<lb />
The Patriots' catcher threw the ball in an attempt<lb />
to get A Jones out. The second baseman missed<lb />
the ball and it went past the<lb />
center fielder. M. Jones<lb />
seized the opportunity and<lb />
bolted for home. A. Jones fol-<lb />
lowed suit and made it to<lb />
third. Left fielder Steve<lb />
Salargo stepped up to bat and<lb />
was thrown out at first, which<lb />
allowed A. Jones to score.<lb />
Mason stayed off the<lb />
board until the fifth inning.<lb />
.After a walk and a single,<lb />
Overton pulled pitcher John<lb />
Payne and put Conrad Clark<lb />
on the mound. The next bat-<lb />
ter hit a fly ball that was<lb />
caught in deep left field. The<lb />
leading runner scored and<lb />
made the game 2-1. ECU.<lb />
In the next inning.<lb />
Mason's batters dominated<lb />
the Pirates' fielders and pitch-<lb />
ers. The firsr batter walked<lb />
and stole second. The next<lb />
batter hit a single and was<lb />
advanced by the following batter, who was thrown<lb />
out at first. The next man up hit a line drive over<lb />
the shortstop's head that scored the two already on<lb />
base. .After a fly out and a single, Clark was pulled<lb />
and Kevyn Fulcher was put in. A hit to right field<lb />
scored two more runs and Fulcher was replaced by<lb />
Travis Thompson. Thompson walked his first bat-<lb />
ter and was pulled for Mike Daniels.<lb />
"The bullpen has somewhat struggled through-<lb />
out the year Overton said.<lb />
A hit to center scored another two runs, and<lb />
before the Pirates could get their last out. the lead-<lb />
ing runner for Mason stole home. The final score<lb />
was 8-2. Mason.<lb />
"Losing the first game the way we lost it cer-<lb />
tainly had an effect on the second Overton said.<lb />
The second game on Sunday was similar to the<lb />

first. It remained scoreless until the fourth, when<lb />
ECU took the lead with one run. Mason gained the<lb />
lead with two in the next inning and took another<lb />
in the seventh to make it 3-1. In the eighth they<lb />
scored three, two of which were from a fly to center<lb />
field. ECU raised the crowd's hopes a bit when they<lb />
scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but<lb />
were unable to score any more. The final score was<lb />
Mason 6, ECU 3.<lb />
"We weren't making the plays during these<lb />
games. That is the mistake that hurt us through the<lb />
year Overton said.<lb />
The Pirates have a week off before their next<lb />
game at L'NC-Wilmington this weekend. The game<lb />
against ECU is considered a big one by L'NCW<lb />
"They are playing better than usual and we're<lb />
not playing as well. We'll have to find a variety of<lb />
ways to w in Overton said.<lb />

Golfers prepare to tee off at CAA championships<lb />
ANTHON'YSTXNFILL<lb />
STVFWRITKR<lb />
The ECU Golf Team is heading to<lb />
Goldsboro on April 18-20 to partici-<lb />
pate in their last, and most important<lb />
tournament of the season. The tour-<lb />
nament is the Colonial Athletic-<lb />
Association Championships and will<lb />
be played at Lane Creek Country<lb />
Club. The Pirates are coming off their<lb />
best tournament of the spring, with a<lb />
fourth place finish at the Tennessee<lb />
State Intercollegiate. Even though the<lb />
Pirates had their best finish. Coach<lb />
Kevin Williams felt they should have<lb />
done better.<lb />
"I was disappointed in a way,<lb />
because I felt that there was only one<lb />
team last week that could have beat<lb />
us, and that was Jacksonville State<lb />
from Alabama Williams said. "But it<lb />
was our best finish of the spring, so<lb />
that's still better than we've been<lb />
doing<lb />
The CAA Championships are for<lb />
bragging rights, and the Pirates will be<lb />
facing all nine of the conference<lb />
teams, including VCU. who's ranked<lb />
14th in the nation. Williams believes<lb />
that they have a good chance of being<lb />
in the top four, hopefully finishing sec-<lb />
ond behind VCU. The Pirates have<lb />
defeated Wilmington three out of the<lb />
five times they've met this year. Both<lb />
times ECU met James Madison they<lb />
lost, but thev were narrow margins of<lb />
loss. VCU, UNCWand JMU were the<lb />
top three teams that Williams thinks<lb />
will be the best competition.<lb />
"We need to play consistent and do<lb />
well two of the three days in order to<lb />
take second place Williams said. "If<lb />
we want to win, and upset VCU, we'll<lb />
have to play good all three rounds<lb />
The five Pirates Williams chose to<lb />
go to Goldsboro are Marc Miller. Kevin<lb />
Miller. Richie Creech, Steven Satterly,<lb />
and either Daniel Griffis or Robbie<lb />
Perry. Williams says that they'll find<lb />
out for sure this week.<lb />
"Perry's been real consistent in<lb />
tournaments, but not in qualifying<lb />
Williams said. "In fact, he was our low-<lb />
est score in the Furman tournament.<lb />
Then again. Griffis has been consis-<lb />
tent qualifying and not in the tourna-<lb />
ments. So the fifth spot will be decid-<lb />
ed this week, between these two<lb />
Griffis and Perry<lb />
The Pirates have won the CAA<lb />
seven out of the last 10 years. Two<lb />
vears ago they placed second, and last<lb />
year finished a disappointing seventh.<lb />
Since this is the Pirates last tourna-<lb />
ment of the year. Williams summa-<lb />
rized this season's play.<lb />
"I think that is was disappointing<lb />
in certain ways, because of the incon-<lb />
sistency Williams said. "We're basi-<lb />
cally a young team, starting three<lb />
freshmen at some tournaments.<lb />
Maybe this youth had something to do<lb />
with the inconsistency, but thee<lb />
had plenty of tournament experience.<lb />
We did secure a winning record<lb />
though, which we haven't had in two<lb />
years, so that's a positive<lb />
The Pirates, going into the CAA<lb />
Championships, have an overall record<lb />
of 91-65-3. If every thing goes as<lb />
planned and the Pirates take second,<lb />
they'll finish the season with '8 wins.<lb />
Even though Williams was disappoint-<lb />
ed, congratulations are in order for the<lb />
Pirates winning season, and once<lb />

away.<lb />
Nicki Andrews was hit by a pitch<lb />

Andrews and Conrad. Rhonda Rost<lb />

bases again. Strickland then hit a one<lb />
in the gap in left center to score two<lb />
more runs. ECU scored six runs off<lb />
