A new agenda and pertinent issues were the<lb/>
focus of the semester's second meeting of the<lb/>
general body members of Allied Blacks for<lb/>
Leadership and Equality (A.B.L.E). The orga-<lb/>
nization met Tuesday evening at the Ledonia<lb/>
Wright .African American Cultural Center to<lb/>
plan for upcoming events and discuss issues<lb/>
relevant to minority student life.<lb/>
Spring semester ushered in a new execu-<lb/>
tive board and a host of new concerns for the<lb/>
organization which is the center of The Black<lb/>
Student Union.<lb/>
"Now that A.B.L.E is under new leader-<lb/>

intend to meet this semester A.B.L.E.<lb/>

STAFF REPORTS<lb/>
In Monday's meeting of the Student<lb/>
Government .Association (SGA), when the<lb/>
time came to discuss old business, the future<lb/>
of the organization's executive board tuition<lb/>
payment plan came into question. As TEC<lb/>
reported last week, sophomore class president<lb/>
Cliff Webster had intoduced a resolution<lb/>
denouncing the infamous bill. The bill, origi-<lb/>
nally passed in the spring of 1996, allows for<lb/>
the payment of the executive council's fall<lb/>
and spring tuition by student fees. Webster<lb/>
introduced the resolution to overturn the bill<lb/>
two weeks ago. Moday evening when the res-<lb/>
olution came into question, it was revealed<lb/>
that the resolution had "failed committee<lb/>
meaning the student welfare committee had<lb/>
already voted in opposition of the resolution.<lb/>
Objections arose which led to SGA having to<lb/>
vote as a body. Later, by means of secret bal-<lb/>
lot, it was decided that the tuition bill passed<lb/>
favorably with a vote of 26 to 11 with a few<lb/>
members abstaining.<lb/>
Although no other univerity in the UNC<lb/>
system has a comparable tuition bill for their<lb/>
student body executives, SGA members in<lb/>
favor of the bill at ECU maintain that the bill<lb/>
is legitimate and that SGA officials do more<lb/>
than their share to warrant the use of student<lb/>
fees.<lb/>
Among the things discussed at the meeting<lb/>
were the role and fundamentals of affirmative<lb/>
action and the seeming organizational bias that<lb/>
occurs when A.B.L.E. and other minority stu-<lb/>
dent groups submit proposals for event fund-<lb/>
ing to the Student Government Association<lb/>
(SGA).<lb/>
"The funding process really has some<lb/>
holes in it Frazier said, adding that she felt<lb/>
students were unaware of the control SGA has<lb/>
over what student organizations can and can-<lb/>
not do. "They make all the decisions, and<lb/>
when it comes to getting funds allocated,<lb/>
minority organizations like A.B.L.E. and the<lb/>
Native American Student Organization have<lb/>
to go through a lot more to get a lot less<lb/>

In Tuesday's edition of TEC, it was<lb/>
announced that A.B.L.Es general body meet-<lb/>
ing would be on Wednesday afternoon at 6<lb/>
p.m. when, in fact, the meeting was held<lb/>
Tuesday night. In the future, all general body<lb/>
meetings will be held on the second Tuesday<lb/>
of each month at 6 p.m. Any exceptions will be<lb/>
duly posted.<lb/>
Tueday night's meeting of Allied Blacks for Leadership and Equality (A.B.LE.) served as a time of dicussion, introduction of new ideas and an opportunity to meet<lb/>
the new executive board members. They are (from left to right) Vice President Kecia Adams, Treasurer Elena Cray, President Tytishia Frazier and Secretary Heather<lb/>

The Spot, located in Mendenhall Student Center, is one of the university's "quick-stop" dining options.<lb/>
Students voice concern that these type establishments give less substance for meals, cost more and quickly<lb/>
deplete declining balance accounts.<lb/>
Several changes, stemming from student complaints, are com-<lb/>
ing to campus dining next year.<lb/>
These changes include an increased declining balance for<lb/>
the 9 and 14 meal plans, a new design idea for the Galley and a<lb/>
possible change in dinning hall hours.<lb/>
University Dining Services<lb/>
Director, Frank Salamon, real-<lb/>
izes campus dining is not per-<lb/>
fect. However, he said<lb/>
University Dining Services is<lb/>
making every effort to follow<lb/>
up on student complaints and<lb/>
correct them to the best of<lb/>
their ability.<lb/>
One of the major ways they<lb/>
receive complaints is through<lb/>
their txd advisory meetings.<lb/>
This meeting is at Todd<lb/>
Dining Hall in Sweethearts.<lb/>
All of the cafe and dining hall<lb/>
managers attend this meeting<lb/>
to discuss what is going on in<lb/>
their location. According to<lb/>
marketing manager, Chris<lb/>
Warren student input they<lb/>
receive ranges from product<lb/>
ideas to complaints about ser-<lb/>
vice or meal plan options.<lb/>
One specific question stu-<lb/>
dents have asked is, why is<lb/>
there is one type of food in<lb/>
one location and not in anoth-<lb/>
er? Warren explains that<lb/>
there are space restrictions.<lb/>
For instance the Galley offers<lb/>
pizza and the Croatan does<lb/>
not. The reason for this is the<lb/>
Croatan has several large grills<lb/>
and there is not enough room for an oven to bake pizza.<lb/>
Another example is the Health Choice Deli that is found in the<lb/>
Spot and the Wright Place, but not in another cafe. This is<lb/>
because these locations were remodeled and these features<lb/>
were added. According to Warren and Salamon, this is a good<lb/>
thing since it makes each cafe unique.<lb/>
"In a way this helps to offer the greatest amount of variety<lb/>
everywhere Warren said. "If we can not offer a product some-<lb/>
where we try to offer it somewhere else<lb/>
Another common complaint about dining services deals with<lb/>
the price of food. Salamon want students to understand that<lb/>
Dining Services does not receive money from the University. It<lb/>
is a self-financing program. They do not try to set unreasonable<lb/>
prices, they simplv set them like any other business. They look<lb/>
at the cost of making that product and also look at the cost of<lb/>
running the program.<lb/>
Another change campus dining will be making for the stu-<lb/>
dents is increasing the declining balance provided with the<lb/>
meal plans. Next semester, with a 9 plus meal plan you will<lb/>
receive $150 in declining balance, with the 14 meal plan, stu-<lb/>
dents will receive $125. and with the 19 there is no change.<lb/>
According to Salamon. dining services realized the students on<lb/>
the lower meal plans use more declining balance, and he feels<lb/>
this should help student's declining balance last through a<lb/>
semester.<lb/>
.As far as changes for next year go dining services is seriously<lb/>
considering changing the hours for dinner. They feel most stu-<lb/>
dents do not eat until later in the evening. Salamon believes<lb/>
that 4:30 is too early to start dinner. In order to accommodate<lb/>
athletes with late practices, and because he has found the<lb/>
majority of students eat after 6 p.m they may extend dinner<lb/>
hours as late as 8 p.m. They are also in the process of moving<lb/>
and remodeling the Galley. They plan to have a coffee shop and<lb/>
a place for live music and other entertainment. They also plan<lb/>
on the Galley staying open later.<lb/>

Study finds high rate of pesticides in state's<lb/>
groundwater<lb/>
RALEIGH (AP) - The results of a study showing an alarming rate of pesti-<lb/>
cide contamination in the state's groundwater are skewed because the focus<lb/>
was on the most vulnerable areas of the state, a lobbyist said.<lb/>
Scientists who conducted the five-year study set up 97 special monitoring<lb/>
wells statewide in areas known to be vulnerable to pesticide leaching. Of the<lb/>
97 sites, 26 were contaminated and one in 10 sites had pesticide levels that<lb/>
approached or exceeded levels considered unsafe for drinking.<lb/>
The study, released Tuesday, was produced by the Department of<lb/>
Agriculture and the Department of Environment, Heath and Natural<lb/>
Resources at a cost of more than $1 million.<lb/>
Scientists tell farmers future of blue mold<lb/>
LAUREL SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) - Scientists will try to head off another blue<lb/>
mold epidemic by c'e.ecting the tobacco disease earlier, employing the right<lb/>
chemicals and setting up a system forgetting the word out to farmers in time.<lb/>
About 140 burley-tobacco farmers gathered in Ashe County to hear how<lb/>
scientists are trying to forecast and fight the spread of blue mold, which last<lb/>
year destroyed about a quarter of North Carolina's burley-tobacco crop.<lb/>
C.E. Main, the chairman of the university's plant-pathology department,<lb/>
has sought ways to rid tobacco of diseases for more than 30 years. But blue<lb/>
mold is hard to track, he told farmers Tuesday.<lb/>
Bridgeport police investigate whether rap video had<lb/>
role in girl's death<lb/>
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - An 8-year-old girl was fatally shot in her home,<lb/>
and police were investigating whether she might have been imitating a scene<lb/>
from a rap video.<lb/>
Tynisha Gathers was shot in the forehead by one of three other children<lb/>
playing with a handgun after the four had been watching television Tuesday<lb/>
evening in the home of the victim's grandmother, police said.<lb/>
Fblice Lt. Frank Resta said the children claimed they were replaying a<lb/>
scene from a rap video when the accident occurred.<lb/>
Police said they were unable to find any such tape when they checked the<lb/>
living room. Police didn't say whether the children identified a particular rap<lb/>
group or video.<lb/>
Resta said a 10-year-old girl who fired the shot was charged with<lb/>
manslaughter and taken to a juvenile detention center.<lb/>
Dumping of U.S. immigration lottery forms sparks riot -<lb/>
FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) - Police opened fire today to disperse riot-<lb/>

immigration lottery forms were dumped into the sea.<lb/>
Two passers-by spotted the forms - which give applicants a chance to win<lb/>
immigration visas to the United States - floating Tuesday afternoon near the<lb/>
King Jimmy wharf in the capital of this West African nation.<lb/>
As word spread of the dumping and suspicions rose that officials were<lb/>
responsible, several hundred protesters converged today on the post office,<lb/>
hurling stones and shouting.<lb/>
Riot police lobbed tear gas and fired live ammunition in the air, forcing the<lb/>
protesters to retreat. After four hours of running battles, police reported 17<lb/>

of Valentine's Day<lb/>
CHANTILLY, Va. (AP) - One hundred years ago, lovers - re busy express-<lb/>
ing tender devotion. Mail sacks sagged with valentines. Confectioners sold<lb/>
heart-shaped creams. Florists suggested people say it with flowers.<lb/>
"Be mine" has echoed through the mists of time.<lb/>
Through war arid peace, electricity and e-mail, man on the moon and<lb/>
woman in the voting booth, the essentials of Valentine's Day have stayed as<lb/>
firmly embedded as Cupid's arrow.<lb/>
It's just that the day keeps getting bigger.<lb/>
Americans are expected to swap 950 million valentines, give 90 million<lb/>
roses (eight in 10 of them red) and spend $700 million on candy for Friday.<lb/>
That's a hunk of burning love.<lb/>
It begins with tiny little flames.<lb/>
At Greenbriar East elementary school in Virginia's Fairfax County, the<lb/>
youngest children have their valentine pouches made, cards ready and<lb/>
expectations primed.<lb/>
On Friday, says trlird-grade teacher Mary Henry, "they will get all squig-<lb/>
gly and giggly when they read them<lb/>
Kids will skitter off to classroom comers to read their notes. Like gener-<lb/>
ations past, they've been snipping and pasting red and white paper. Glue<lb/>
sticks have replaced the glue pots of old.<lb/>
The card exchange falls oft in higher grades.<lb/>
"Some of them are into the boy-girl thing and some aren't said sixth-<lb/>
grade teacher Mark Stevens, counting stacks of change for Friday's ice cream<lb/>
party. "Some are into the boy-girl thing a little too much<lb/>
Not so at a table where six boys from fifth grade are practically inhaling<lb/>
lunch. The only two in this group planning to give valentines this year are<lb/>
doing so under pressure.<lb/>
"Mom's making me said Andrew. He will have his computer spit them<lb/>
out.<lb/>
At high school, the beat picks up. Expensive roses make their debut.<lb/>
As in kindergarten, but for different reasons, Valentine's Day is again a<lb/>
big, big deal.<lb/>
A hundred years ago, Roy Farrell Greeve tried to stop all this.<lb/>
In a Feb. 14,1897, cartoon in The Washington Post, he told modem girls<lb/>
that Cupid and hearts were "clearly out of date<lb/>
Nice try.<lb/>
Elsewhere in the paper, a florist asked: "What could be prettier, or more<lb/>
refined, than flowers?" In another cartoon, a mailman struggled with a sack<lb/>
of "red-hot Valentines<lb/>
Thirty years later, newspapers were full of love testimonials and mer-<lb/>
chants out to make a buck. "Say it with flowers a flower shop implored in<lb/>
1927. You could take your sweetie to Sargeant's restaurant in Washington for<lb/>
a $1 turkey dinner.<lb/>
Roses, "delicately tinted as her fair cheeks went for $3 to a spectacular<lb/>
$10 a dozen - a day's wage for a bricklayer, or a month's child care.<lb/>
For Valentine's Day 1967, a bottle of Beaujolais sold for1.99 - one quar-<lb/>
ter of the price for a modest label now. A pound of Whitman chocolate in a<lb/>
red foil heart box went for Si .33. Now, a Whitman's Sampler tops $.<lb/>
This year, the average consumer will spend $30 on Valentine's Day, says<lb/>
a retailers' survey.<lb/>
Free valentine greetings, meanwhile, are whizzing through the Internet.<lb/>
But the message has not changed as much as the medium.<lb/>
Even the insulting valentines on the Web have their counterparts in the<lb/>
penny dreadfuls of a century ago. "Tis all in vain, your simpering looks<lb/>
begins one from that era.<lb/>
Different accounts exist of the origins of Valentine's Day. The earfy<lb/>
Christian church had at least two saints named Valentine - one, a priest who<lb/>
secretly married couples against Roman orders; another, a man behind bars<lb/>
who was thrown notes of affection by children he had treated kindly<lb/>
English poet Geoffrey Chaucer wrote in the 1300s that birds chose their<lb/>
mates on Valentine's Day.<lb/>
The tone appeared set by 1603. William Shakespeare voiced a sentiment<lb/>
heard ever since when he had Ophelia say: "And I a maid at your window,<lb/>
To be your valentine<lb/>
Flash forward to a greeting card early this century: "Be my Valentine<lb/>
And to a car4 taped to a window at Greenbriar East school this week: "Be<lb/>
mine<lb/>

Alarm clocks affect<lb/>
mood, biorhythms<lb/>
CHICAGO (AP) - Changing the<lb/>
timing of when you are awake and<lb/>
when you sleep can profoundly<lb/>
affect your mood, according to sci-<lb/>
entists who have for the first time<lb/>
linked mood changes to the pre-<lb/>
dictable and enduring internal<lb/>
rhythms of the human body.<lb/>
Two studies released Tuesday<lb/>
tease apart the complex relation-<lb/>
ships between daily biological<lb/>
rhythms, sleep choices and<lb/>
whether people feel cheerful or<lb/>
blue.<lb/>
The studies suggest, for exam-<lb/>
ple, that even if a person has got-<lb/>
ten enough sleep, he is likely to be<lb/>
irritable or blue if his waking hours<lb/>
center on a time when his biologi-<lb/>
cal clock tells him he "should" be<lb/>
asleep.<lb/>
Conversely, even if a person<lb/>
stays awake 36 hours straight and is<lb/>
seriously sleep-deprived, he may<lb/>
say he feels terrific if you ask him<lb/>
about his mood at an hour when his<lb/>
biological clock tells him he is sup-<lb/>
posed to be awake, findings sug-<lb/>
gest.<lb/>
The studies show that "some<lb/>
hours of the day, we're happier<lb/>
than others, and it's occurring<lb/>
inside us, not just in reaction to<lb/>
the world around us said psychol-<lb/>
ogist David F. Dinges of the<lb/>
University of Pennsylvania.<lb/>
He called the work a "tour de<lb/>
force<lb/>
The findings will pave the way<lb/>
for research that one day could<lb/>
help millions of depressed people<lb/>
live happier lives and aid people<lb/>
whose sleep patterns are disrupted<lb/>
by shift work or travel, said Oinges,<lb/>
chief of sleep and chronobiology in<lb/>
the psychiatry department.<lb/>
"We don't really understand<lb/>
whether (sleep) disturbances <lb/>
are leading to some of the mood<lb/>
disturbances associated with night<lb/>
shift work or chronic exposure to<lb/>
time zone changes he said.<lb/>
But since depression, anxiety<lb/>

The investigation dragged on<lb/>

The studies, conducted inde-<lb/>
pendently in Boston and in<lb/>
Manchester, England, arc<lb/>
described in a report in the<lb/>
February issue of the Archives of<lb/>
 General Psychiatry, released<lb/>
Tuesday by the American Medical<lb/>
Association.<lb/>
A total of 24 healthy young vol-<lb/>
unteers were confined to laborato-<lb/>
ries and regimented to artificially<lb/>
. long sleep-wake cycles - 30 hours<lb/>
' or 28 hours instead of the usual 24<lb/>
hours - for about a month.<lb/>
The subjects experienced<lb/>
highs and lows in mood corre-<lb/>
sponding to a combined effect of<lb/>
two things: the amount of time a<lb/>
subject had been awake and the<lb/>
subject's body temperature, which<lb/>
is usually lowest in the early morn-<lb/>
ing of a 24-hour sleep-wake cycle.<lb/>
"This is very exciting, because<lb/>
it leads us to believe that similar<lb/>
mechanisms could be involved in<lb/>
depression said Dr. Diane B.<lb/>
Boivin, who led the Boston<lb/>
research at Harvard-affiliated<lb/>
Brigham and Women's Hospital.<lb/>
Dr. Thomas Wehr, chief of the<lb/>
Psychobiology Branch at the<lb/>
National Institute of Mental<lb/>
Health, said he is preparing to use<lb/>
the "ingenious" design of the<lb/>
studies to explore whether alter-<lb/>
ing sleep patterns can combat<lb/>
manic depression, which afflicts<lb/>
about 1 percent of the population.<lb/>
Manic depression and major<lb/>
depression, which afflicts 8 per-<lb/>
cent to 10 percent of the popula-<lb/>
tion, are often typified by worse<lb/>
moods in the morning and steadi-<lb/>
ly improving moods throughout<lb/>
the day, said Wehr, who was not<lb/>
; involved in the new studies.<lb/>
It is known that about 60 per-<lb/>
cent of major dcpressives will<lb/>
respond favorably - if temporarily -<lb/>
to sleep deprivation, such as being<lb/>
kept up all night, Wehr said.<lb/>
German researchers are now<lb/>
trying to make that improvement<lb/>
permanent by depriving depres-<lb/>
sives of sleep and then shifting<lb/>
their bedtimes to much earlier in<lb/>
the evening, Wehr said.<lb/>
The biological clock is an area<lb/>
of the brain that serves as a pace-<lb/>
maker for rhythms in biological<lb/>
functions ranging from sleeping<lb/>
and waking to digestion, Dinges<lb/>
said.<lb/>
"Over the years, it has seemed<lb/>
fairly clear that in people who<lb/>
have mood disorders, their mood<lb/>
varies depending on when and<lb/>
how much they sleep relative to<lb/>
their circadian (daily) rhythms<lb/>
Wehr said.<lb/>
With the two new studies, sci-<lb/>
entists now have at least a theo-<lb/>
retical way to predict how some-<lb/>
one's mood will be affected by his<lb/>
sleep timing as it relates to his<lb/>
own biological clock.<lb/>

Frazier said she encourages all<lb/>
minority organizations to send rep-<lb/>
resentatives to the weekly SGA<lb/>
meetings to see how things are<lb/>
being done.<lb/>
"If every one would just send at<lb/>
least one person to speak for their<lb/>
group, that may make a noticable<lb/>
difference Frazier said.<lb/>
Another topic of discussion was<lb/>
the need for a program geared<lb/>
toward minority high school stu-<lb/>
dents as a means of recruitment to<lb/>
ECU. The model for this idea<lb/>
comes from a similar program enti-<lb/>
tled Project Uplift, based at UNC-<lb/>
Chapel Hill.<lb/>
"The answer to having a stronger<lb/>
minority student body voice is to first<lb/>
increase minority enrollment<lb/>
Frazier said. "Apparently these type of<lb/>
programs make a lasting impression<lb/>
in the minds of high school students.<lb/>
So we may take a proposal of this to<lb/>
the minority student affairs, and from<lb/>
there it will probably go to admis-<lb/>
sions<lb/>
Fraizier emphasized the impor-<lb/>
tance of membership to any thriving<lb/>
organization.<lb/>
"The only way we're going to be<lb/>
able to accomplish any of the things<lb/>
we have on the agenda this semester<lb/>
is through our members Frazier said.<lb/>
"I encourage all old and new mem-<lb/>
bert o come to the meetings. Now<lb/>
that we are under new leadership, we<lb/>
definitely plan to use all of our stu-<lb/>
dent resources wherever we can<lb/>
Frazier added that other minority<lb/>
organizations on campus should have<lb/>
representatives at the AB.L.E. meet-<lb/>
ings as well. She said the group regu-<lb/>
larly tackles the topics that matter<lb/>
most to minority students.<lb/>
"While we are the umbrella orga-<lb/>
nization for the collective minority<lb/>
student groups, we still need the sup-<lb/>
port of the individual groups in order<lb/>
to stand<lb/>
Some of the upcoming events<lb/>
AB.L.E. will be contributing to<lb/>
include a Black Faculty and Staff<lb/>
Award Ceremony which will honor<lb/>
one outstanding faculty member and<lb/>
peer-nominated student and an end-<lb/>
of-semester unity program with all of<lb/>
the other minority organizations on<lb/>
campus.<lb/>
"We also will be helping out with<lb/>
the Gospel Choir's anniversary cele-<lb/>
bration on Feb. 22 along with the<lb/>
National Pan Hellenic Council<lb/>
Frazier said. "That's what we<lb/>
needmore support of that nature. I<lb/>
think we really should support each<lb/>
other's programs<lb/>
Currently A.B.L.E. has openings<lb/>
for several positions including<lb/>
Historian and members to fill cam-<lb/>

Law professor's future at UNC still<lb/>
uncertain<lb/>
UNC School of Law Professor Barry Nakell was sus-<lb/>
pended from his reaching position in October after<lb/>
being charged with a misdemeanor for shoplifting $36<lb/>
worth of food and a restaurant guide from A Southern<lb/>
Season in the Eastgate Shopping Center.<lb/>
Nakell was previously convicted in 1991 of stealing<lb/>
a book from a Carrboro bookstore.<lb/>
The faculty hearing committee, which is com-<lb/>
posed of five University personnel, heard closing argu-<lb/>
ments in Nakell's hearing Jan 24. The committee<lb/>
was given 10 working days to make a recommendation<lb/>
in the case.<lb/>
Daniel Pollitt, acting counsel for Nakell and a<lb/>
Kenan professor emeritus in the law school, said he<lb/>
had not been informed of a decision.<lb/>
Campus crime increases in '96 for the<lb/>
University of Missouri-Columbia<lb/>
Crime on campus rose considerably in several areas.<lb/>
Burglaries on campus increased over 46 percent, from<lb/>
54 percent in 1995 to 91 percent in 19, the<lb/>
Missouri University Police Department reported.<lb/>
The number of drug abuse violations also saw a 41<lb/>
percent increase, from 34 to 58 offenses.<lb/>
Police Chief Scott Shclton said the large increase<lb/>
in drug abuse cases, usually involving marijuana, is<lb/>
most likely attributed to increased awareness by uni-<lb/>
versity staff.<lb/>
Violent crimes on campus rase slightly in 19,<lb/>
with sex offenses increasing from 17 to 25 reported<lb/>
incidents and one reported rape. Aggravated assault<lb/>
increased from six incidents in 1995 to nine in 19.<lb/>
Vandalism cases dropped from 176 incidents in<lb/>
1995 to 152 incidents. Hate crimes also dropped<lb/>
from 10 to seven incidents from the previous year.<lb/>
University of Tennessee students on<lb/>
a quest to battle discrimination<lb/>
A group of UT students will be asking SGA members<lb/>
to pass a new bill this month that would add sexual<lb/>
orientation to UT"s non-discrimination policy.<lb/>
The students have united with faculty and staff<lb/>
member to draft the bill, which, if passed, will protect<lb/>
students, faculty and staff members from job discrim-<lb/>
ination on the basis of sexual orientation.<lb/>
This is not the first time SGA has seen such a bill.<lb/>
Nearly one year ago, a similar bill presented to the<lb/>
SGA would have added sexual orientation to the dis-<lb/>
crimination clause found in Hilltopics.<lb/>
Former SGA President Keith Townsend and the<lb/>
SGA Senate tabled the bill, claiming the law was "too<lb/>
ambiguous<lb/>
Already, more than 300 universities and schools in<lb/>
the U.S. have added sexual orientation to their dis-<lb/>
crimination clauses, including the University of<lb/>
Arkansas, University of South Carolina, University of<lb/>
Virginia and University of Tojas, all of which are state<lb/>
institutions like UT<lb/>
The search and seizure policy at<lb/>
Appalachian University - a success or<lb/>
failure?<lb/>
It has been close to a year since the University instat-<lb/>
ed the current search and seizure policy. The policy<lb/>
gives university police the authority to search a room<lb/>
in the residence halls (with probable cause) without<lb/>
first obtaining a search warrant.<lb/>
ASU Police Captain Larry Foster, whose depart-<lb/>
ment handles all searches called in by residents and<lb/>
security assistantssays that while the police have<lb/>
made more searches, they have made no official<lb/>
arrests.<lb/>
In Fall 1995, before the policy was enacted, there<lb/>
were 25 citations written for the possession of a con-<lb/>
trolled substance. In Spring 19, the first semester<lb/>
under the new policy, that number jumped over 200<lb/>
percent to 51. Last semester, it increased once again,<lb/>
to 61 counts of possession of a controlled substance.<lb/>
It is clear that the policy has had a dramatic effect<lb/>
on the number of residence hall students getting<lb/>

Staff replaced at battered, women's shelter<lb/>
amid abuse charges<lb/>
NEW YORK (AP) - Employees of a<lb/>
battered women's shelter have<lb/>
been replaced amid charges they<lb/>
had sex with the women, used<lb/>
drugs and alcohol while working<lb/>
and let abusive husbands and<lb/>
boyfriends in at night.<lb/>
Investigators got an anonymous<lb/>
tip about abuse at the New Day<lb/>
shelter in the Bronx, the only shel-<lb/>
ter for battered women run by city<lb/>
workers. Others are run by private<lb/>
agencies.<lb/>
"They had gone for a place look-<lb/>
ing for safety and they hadn't found<lb/>
it for themselves or their children<lb/>
said Brian Wing, the commissioner<lb/>
of the New York State Department<lb/>
of Social Services.<lb/>
Eleven of 44 staff members<lb/>
were suspended Tuesday without<lb/>
pay; the rest were transferred.<lb/>
None of the suspects were identi-<lb/>
fied. Also replaced was the shel-<lb/>
ter's security company.<lb/>
Investigators heard details<lb/>
about the abuse last month during<lb/>
a public hearing of the Governor's<lb/>
Commission on Domestic<lb/>
Violence.<lb/>
Two women told commissioners<lb/>
about the shelter's problems,<lb/>
including children wandering the<lb/>
hails and staffers stealing food and<lb/>
clothing. They also accused work-<lb/>
ers of coercing them to have sex<lb/>
and allowing batterers into the<lb/>
shelter. They said they complained<lb/>
to the administrator, who did noth-<lb/>
ing.<lb/>
Edward J. Kuriansky, commis-<lb/>
sioner of the city's Department of<lb/>
Investigation, said shoddy supervi-<lb/>
sion also allowed staffers to double<lb/>
and triple their pay while sleeping<lb/>
on the job.<lb/>
"The larger the shelter, the<lb/>
more difficult it is to instill a fami-<lb/>
ly spirit said Lucy Friedman,<lb/>
executive director of Victim's<lb/>

continued from page 1<lb/>
Bahamas.<lb/>
At the beginning of the year the<lb/>
choir decided that they wanted to<lb/>
take their ministry out of the country<lb/>
and to the Bahamas.<lb/>
Debra Dixon, the choir director<lb/>
commented on a few reasons for<lb/>
going to the Bahamas.<lb/>
"It is a wonderful opportunity to<lb/>
go out of the country to sing, one<lb/>
main reason was for exposure, and to<lb/>
give students a chance to get away,<lb/>
retreat, and explore the sites Dixon<lb/>
said.<lb/>
Traveling to the Bahamas seemed<lb/>
t excite every choir member and<lb/>
some non- choir members.<lb/>
"Students who had never been<lb/>
part of choir wanted to join the choir<lb/>
just to go on the tour and they<lb/>
seemed not to car: about the real<lb/>
reason for soaring said another<lb/>
choir member.<lb/>
Some veteran jr choir members<lb/>
like sophomore Joe Williams, who is<lb/>
the Sergeant at Arms and base sec-<lb/>
tion leader said people who join the<lb/>
choir for the Bahamas trip, have the<lb/>
wrong ideas<lb/>
"lb join the choir just to go on the<lb/>
trip is shaky and flaky Williams said.<lb/>
Surprisingly, even though the<lb/>
Bahamas trip was the most anticipat-<lb/>
ed, the choir decided not to go<lb/>
because of the price.<lb/>
The whole trip was going to cost<lb/>
$270 which accounted for airfare,<lb/>
hotel fees, bus transportation, which<lb/>
included touring in Georgia,<lb/>
Alabama, Knoxville, Tennessee,<lb/>
Charlotte, Miami, Orlando, and<lb/>
Dillian, Florida. The gospel choir<lb/>
needed at least fifty people to go, but<lb/>
only 40 people committed to going.<lb/>
As a consequence, the gospel<lb/>
choir has decided to tour every previ-<lb/>
ous planned destination excluding<lb/>
the Bahamas, which will now cost<lb/>
$150.<lb/>
One choir member, Amy Berridge<lb/>
who had looked forward to touring<lb/>
the Bahamas said, " I think we<lb/>
should have gone, but I understand<lb/>
that financially some people weren't<lb/>
able to go<lb/>
Still, the group maintains that<lb/>
their sole purpose for traveling is to<lb/>
uplift the Christian faith wherever<lb/>
the mad might take them.<lb/>

Burn Debris Disaster Free<lb/>
Smokey is counting on you to follow the rules for<lb/>
safely burning debris.<lb/>
1. Check local laws on burning.<lb/>
2. Don't burn on dry windy days.<lb/>
3. Clear a 30-foot circle around debris before<lb/>
lighting fire.<lb/>
4. Keep shovel, rake and water nearby.<lb/>
5. Don't leave fire unattended by an adult, even<lb/>
for a minute.<lb/>
6. Consider alternatives to burning: composting,<lb/>
recycling, or hauling to a landfill.<lb/>

i Despite an outcry from the student body at large and a formal resolution proposing that it be<lb/>
removed, the legislature of our Student Government Association (SGA) has voted against a<lb/>
reversal of the bill passed last spring that allowed the SGA Executive Council to have their<lb/>
tuition and books paid for out of student fees.<lb/>
Wfe really aren't really shocked by this decision, however. Certainly, no one in their right mind<lb/>
Would turn down a chance for free tuition and books. It's a great financial break, the best that<lb/>
any student could hope for. No matter how much we criticize the SGA, we're all really envious<lb/>
jof them. Aren't we?<lb/>
Vfcll actually, no.<lb/>
You see, they're not getting free tuition and books. Nothing in this world is free, especially<lb/>
pot an education. We, the student body of ECU, are the ones paying for their education.<lb/>
In fact, because the Executive Council doesn't pay tuition, they also don't pay student fees -<lb/>
the very place where the money comes from to pay for their tuitions. This means that they're<lb/>
not contributing even one red cent to their own education.<lb/>
i Add to that the fact that they get to decide where a major portion of the student fees are used,<lb/>
money that they don't even contribute to, and you can see why many students have a problem<lb/>
with the current situation.<lb/>
That is probably why the SGA decided to take an anonymous vote on the resolution to repeal<lb/>
the free tuition bill. There was a motion made to take the vote by roll call, but it was objected<lb/>
to. However, the objection itself wasn't challenged. Why not? Because those who want to keep<lb/>
the bill alive don't want anyone to know about it.<lb/>
Also, in a strange occurrence, 13 new day representatives were nominated and then accepted<lb/>
into the voting body of the legislature right before the vote on the resolution. These 13 people<lb/>
were not already-serving members of the SGA, but were instead new to the SGA, unfamiliar<lb/>
with its voting practices and unfamiliar with the resolution on which they were allowed to vote.<lb/>
We can't say how they voted. It was a secret; remember? But we can tell you that the final vote<lb/>
Was 26 to 11 against the approval of the resolution. Who knows how close the vote would h-ve<lb/>
been before these new people were added? ,<lb/>
We wishthis current situation were otherwise. We wish that those in control of our money<lb/>
jvould stawf up and identify themselves and take credit and criticism for what they have done.<lb/>
Nc have reported on the SGA's unethical actions in the past and we will continue to do so as<lb/>
ong as we believe the SGA is continuing to act in this manner.<lb/>

Housekeepers fight racism, privatization<lb/>
Everyone seems to have something to<lb/>
say about racism.<lb/>
Most people want to end aatism,<lb/>
end all the hate, end the discrimina-<lb/>
tion of people based on race. Will,<lb/>
here is your chance. The housekeep-<lb/>
ers at ECU are fighting against dis-<lb/>
crimination and outright racism. For<lb/>
too long the housekeepers here at<lb/>
ECU have been complacent out of<lb/>
fear of losing their jobs, but since the<lb/>
housekeepers made a grievance<lb/>
speaking out about Mr. Nichols' racist<lb/>
remarks, they have been moved into<lb/>
action. The housekeepers aren't ask-<lb/>
ing for much; all they want is tolerable<lb/>
working conditions (where racism is<lb/>
not present and workers are treated<lb/>
with respect), the dismissal of racist<lb/>
supervisor Nicky Nichols, a living<lb/>
wage ($9.50 in the U.S.)and a way for<lb/>
their grievances to be considered, not<lb/>
swept under the rug.<lb/>
Unfortunately, they can't accom-<lb/>
plish this alone. What they need is the<lb/>
support of the student body because<lb/>
we, as the student body, have the<lb/>
power. Ws are the ones paving for<lb/>
people like Nicky Nichols, and<lb/>
Nichols is not the only one. It's our<lb/>
money, and we have the right to speak<lb/>
out against the use of it in ways which<lb/>
we do not approve.<lb/>
Many of the housekeepers have<lb/>
reported being subjected to racist<lb/>
slurs or racism in the form of unjusti-<lb/>
fied pay cuts or dismissals.<lb/>
- Another fear of the house-<lb/>
keepers is the threat of privatization.<lb/>
If the housekeeping work at ECU is<lb/>
privatized, this could mean many of<lb/>
die housekeepers would lose their<lb/>
jobs or suffer pay cuts or hour cuts.<lb/>
The Chancellor, as of now, is opposed<lb/>
to privatization, but ultimately he is<lb/>
the one who will decide if ECU<lb/>
should privatize. The dining services<lb/>
arc already privatized and are under<lb/>
the control of Aramark, and we all<lb/>
know what kind of quality that has<lb/>
brought.<lb/>
W: need to stand in support of the<lb/>
housekeepers and their struggle<lb/>
against oppression. Speak out; call the<lb/>
Chancellor's office and tell him that<lb/>
we as students do not support the<lb/>
racism and discrimination directed<lb/>
against the ECU housekeepers!<lb/>
It's our right, and our responsibili-<lb/>

opinion!<lb/>

Celebrate your single status; it isn't bad<lb/>
SKM1.<lb/>
submission will be assigned by the editor.<lb/>
Well, it's that time of the year again.<lb/>
Time for Cupid to start shooting his<lb/>
arrows. Time for flower deliveries to<lb/>
be seen everywhere. That's right<lb/>
everyone. Tomorrow is Valentine's<lb/>
Day<lb/>
For couples, it's the most romantic<lb/>
time of the year for celebrating your<lb/>
love. For singles, it's the most depress-<lb/>
ing day of the year on which you hope<lb/>
all the flower delivery vans get a flat<lb/>
tire.<lb/>
But, does Valentine's Day really have<lb/>
to be all that depressing for singles?<lb/>
Of course not! There arc plenty of rea-<lb/>
sons why you should be celebrating<lb/>
that you are single.<lb/>
The number one reason is money.<lb/>
Think about all the money you'll be<lb/>
saving on Valentine's Day. While<lb/>
everyone else is rushing out to the<lb/>
card store searching for the perfect<lb/>
card, you can take your nroney to<lb/>
Krispy Kreme and get a hot donut.<lb/>
What about all the other people who<lb/>
run out to Victoria's Secret to buy that<lb/>
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR<lb/>
sexy lingerie that they feel stupid<lb/>
wearing anyway? You can go buy a set<lb/>
of flannel pajamas, sit at home with<lb/>
your friends and make it a Blockbuster<lb/>
night.<lb/>
Another reason why being single on<lb/>
Valentine's Day isn't ail that bad is<lb/>
that you don't have to spend all day<lb/>
worrying about your appearance. You<lb/>
don't have to look, smell, or be nice for<lb/>
anyone.<lb/>
Of course, Valentine's Day is what<lb/>
you make of it. Yes, you can sit at<lb/>
home with that gallon of double fudge<lb/>
ice cream and feel sorry for yourself.<lb/>
Or, you can get motivated. Get up<lb/>
off that couch. Gather all your other<lb/>
single friends and hit the town. You<lb/>
never know who you'll meet that<lb/>
night. After all, it is the most romantic<lb/>
night of the year.<lb/>
So, go downtown, go bowling, or<lb/>
even go see a movie. You might even<lb/>
meet your destiny They could be the<lb/>
person who hands your bowling shoes<lb/>
to you. Or the one who checks your<lb/>
i.d. at the dub. It might even be the<lb/>
person who asks you if you want but-<lb/>
ter on your popcorn. The possibilities<lb/>
are endless.<lb/>
Now, if you don't want to feel left<lb/>
out of the gift giving on Valentine's<lb/>
Day, here's what you do. Send yourself<lb/>
some roses. Nobody will ever know<lb/>
who they're really from. Or better yet,<lb/>
find a buddy who is also single and<lb/>
agree to leave a card on each other's<lb/>
cars, so that everyone else thinks<lb/>
you're special. That way, you'll have<lb/>
something to look forward p on the<lb/>
most dreaded day of the year for sin-<lb/>
gles.<lb/>
Now I'm not saying that it's better<lb/>
to be single on Valentine's Day. But, if<lb/>
you are, don't let this glorious day get<lb/>
you down in the dumps. Make the<lb/>
most of it. Go out there and find your-<lb/>
self a die-hard romantic. Oh, and<lb/>
make sure you don't try to run over<lb/>
the flower delivery man; he could be<lb/>
carrying the flowers that you sent to<lb/>
yourself.<lb/>
Ridley supports voter redistricting<lb/>
To the Editor,<lb/>
I believe 1 know why the incum-<lb/>
bent Inez FVidlcy approves of the<lb/>
proposed redistricting that will affect<lb/>
her City Council seat. As of May of<lb/>
this year, the voter registration data<lb/>
from the Pitt County Board of<lb/>
Elections indicated that there were<lb/>
5,965 voters in City District 3. Of<lb/>
these voters, over 2,900 were under<lb/>
the age of 25. This fall, another.OOO<lb/>
younger voters joined our county's<lb/>
list of registered voters and the<lb/>
majority of these were in City<lb/>
District 3.<lb/>
In the last year, the younger voters<lb/>
and college students became a major-<lb/>
ity of the registered voters in this dis-<lb/>
trict. Now, Inez Fridley feels fine<lb/>
about a plan to remove over 1,000<lb/>
young voters from her district so that<lb/>
she will never have to run hard again.<lb/>
She can sit comfortably on her throne<lb/>
and push her incumbency even fur-<lb/>
ther beyond 12 years without fear of<lb/>
the democratic process.<lb/>
Inez Fridley will be able to com-<lb/>
fortably write and promote ordi-<lb/>
nances that affect the younger mem-<lb/>
bers of our community without the<lb/>
fear of us exercising our democratic<lb/>
rights at the ballot box. If the City<lb/>
Council allows this to happen to us, I<lb/>
plan to oppose every member<lb/>
whovotes for it. Let me be clear.<lb/>
There are now over 11,000 registered<lb/>
voters, under the age of 25 inside of<lb/>
the city districts of Greenville. By<lb/>
election day of this year, there will be<lb/>
at least 1,000 more. Each member of<lb/>
the Council who chooses to ratify<lb/>
this change that hurts the younger<lb/>
community can be assured that we<lb/>
will contact every voter in your dis-<lb/>
trict by phone and mail to inform<lb/>
them about what you did to us before<lb/>
election day. See you at the polls!<lb/>

John Davis<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
It's that time of year again,<lb/>
when the greeting card indus-<lb/>
try pumps out romance like<lb/>
fake snow machines pump out<lb/>
snow in ski resorts, when the<lb/>
little red-headed girl will not<lb/>
send Charlie Brown a card<lb/>
again. The mailbox will trans-<lb/>
form into a monster and growl<lb/>
at us, or leer and laugh, making<lb/>
fun one more time. All the<lb/>
romantic movies will be rerun<lb/>
on TNT, reminding us that,<lb/>
once again, we have no sweet-<lb/>
hearts on which to lavish our<lb/>
affections.<lb/>
There will be those few who<lb/>
do have dates, and they will be<lb/>
gracing restaurants and movie<lb/>
theaters with their darling loves. Hundreds of engagement rings will be dropped<lb/>
into hundreds of glasses of champagne. This is the day that red roses rue.<lb/>
Luckily, love is a year-round thing. Love is the subject of many a poem and<lb/>
many a song, and sometimes entire albums are dedicated to musical musings on<lb/>
the subject. There are probably hundreds of records out there devoted to the<lb/>
subject of devotion. Although I have no date this year, I do have the music for<lb/>
such a date, should it ever be realized, and I more than happily share these trea-<lb/>
sures with you now.<lb/>
In no particular order, here are John Davis' Top Five Romantic Records (and<lb/>
five runners-up): .<lb/>
Peter Gabriel - Us. After his breakup with Sinead O'Connor, Gabriel focused<lb/>
his creative energies on love, in<lb/>
alt her many shades and colors.<lb/>
Against a world-music-influ-<lb/>
enced, art-pop backdrop,<lb/>
Gabriel explores the beauty<lb/>
and pain of relationship. From<lb/>
humorous dance numbers like<lb/>
"Kiss That Frog to the con-<lb/>
tained passion of "Secret<lb/>
World Gabriel faces his sub-<lb/>
ject unflinchingly. "Blood of<lb/>
Eden" is a haunting post-pop<lb/>
ballad celebrating the union<lb/>
that sex creates, while<lb/>
"Washing of the Water" dives<lb/>
into the tendencies towards co-<lb/>
dependence in romance.<lb/>
Gorgeously composed and exe-<lb/>
cuted, Us is a soulful and pas-<lb/>
sionate treatise.<lb/>
U2 - Aduung Baby. U2 decided to reinvent themselves after Rattle ana Hum,<lb/>
which neatly coincided with Edge's divorce from his wife of nearly ten years.<lb/>
The result is the album that both transformed U2 and redirected the course of<lb/>
rock n' roll in the 90s. The album, which was composed and recorded in Berlin,<lb/>
approaches love from a musically disjointed perspective. The beauty of songs<lb/>
like "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" is their messincss, the polluted sonic<lb/>
landscape they develop. "One U2's radio smash, is an unflinching look at the<lb/>
breakdown of love, while "Ultraviolet" and Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around<lb/>
The World" ignite the spark of<lb/>
possible reunion. This is U2's<lb/>
best album to date.<lb/>
Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales.<lb/>
Sting finally married his lover of<lb/>
more than ten years and to cele-<lb/>
brate, he wrote a few songs.<lb/>
Much more radio-friendly than<lb/>
anything he's done since he left<lb/>
the Police, this record presents<lb/>
ten short stories, each picturing<lb/>
a different aspect of romance.<lb/>
Delightful and humorous (the<lb/>

SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
Editor's note: This is the second of a Im-<lb/>
part series. Tuesday's edition had the beginning<lb/>
of our interview with ECU abmrnus Kevin<lb/>
Williamson.<lb/>
Kevin Williamson had gone from<lb/>
Oriental, North Carolina to making<lb/>
deals with the big dogs of Hollywood.<lb/>
After his experiences with KUSng<lb/>
Mrs. Tingle, Williamson wanted to make<lb/>
sure Stream would be made. Miramax<lb/>
promised that the movie would be<lb/>
made, and the movie finished filming<lb/>
exactly one year - to the day - after it<lb/>
was bought. Wes Craven, who<lb/>
Williamson calls the "master of the<lb/>
genre directed the film.<lb/>
"He shot it just the way it was writ-<lb/>
ten Williamson said. "My script is the<lb/>
script that ended up on the screen<lb/>
Williamson said he was very pleased<lb/>
with the movie and gave credit to the<lb/>
"high-caliber" performances of the<lb/>
actors. Drew Barrymore, he said, gave a<lb/>
performance worthy of Janet Leigh in<lb/>
Psycho. He called Neve Campbell "the<lb/>
new Jamie Lee Curtis<lb/>
I told Williamson about a conversa-<lb/>

he enjoyed Scream in part because he<lb/>
didn't feel like an idiot when he left the<lb/>
theater (as he often did after viewing<lb/>
horror movies).<lb/>
"I wanted it to be smart he said. "I<lb/>
wanted the characters to have a brain in<lb/>
their head, and I also wanted it to be<lb/>
fun<lb/>
Williamson said he avoided the big-<lb/>
breasted bimbo syndrome that domi-<lb/>
nates many slasher flicks. Letting<lb/>
humor carry the plot from point A to<lb/>
point B instead made the film smarter<lb/>
and the characters more self-aware.<lb/>
He also tried to make a statement<lb/>
about cinema violence with Scream.<lb/>
"When I was writing the script, Bob<lb/>
Dole was screaming about Natural Born<lb/>
Killers? Williamson explained. "I was<lb/>
angered that he suggested violence was<lb/>
caused by movies<lb/>
"Movies can inspire they do not<lb/>
make us go out and kill<lb/>
Williamson experienced first hand<lb/>
the effects of Dole's tirade. Despite<lb/>
their promise beforehand, a northern<lb/>
California school board refused to allow<lb/>
Stream to be filmed at a local high<lb/>
school because the board felt the movie<lb/>
promoted violence. The school board<lb/>
nearly got sued as a result of its actions.<lb/>
Lawsuits aside, Williamson's main<lb/>
focus is scaring the hell out of people.<lb/>
Before we began the interview, he<lb/>
questioned a faculty member of the<lb/>
theatre department about air hoses,<lb/>
more specifically, the use of air hoses for<lb/>
other purposes than filling up tires or<lb/>
blowing off surfaces - death by exces-<lb/>
sive air pressure, possibly.<lb/>
Still, he said, when he wntes some-<lb/>
thing, he does not know if it will be<lb/>
scary on film or not.<lb/>
"For Scream, I put on scary sound-<lb/>
tracks and tried to figure out what<lb/>
scared me Williamson added.<lb/>
For a scene in the film in which a<lb/>
character is crushed to death in a garage<lb/>
door while trying desperately to escape<lb/>
through a pet door, Williamson consult-<lb/>
ed his assistant and fellow product of<lb/>
the ECU theatre department, Kathryn<lb/>
Willis. The garage door thing had been<lb/>
done before, he said, so he was looking<lb/>
for a new twist. As soon as Willis told<lb/>
him about the pet door her mother had<lb/>
insisted be placed on her family's<lb/>
garage door, he knew what to do.<lb/>
When he sold the screenplay for<lb/>
Kevin Williamson<lb/>
Scream to<lb/>
Miramax,<lb/>
Williamson<lb/>
included a<lb/>
five-page<lb/>
summary of<lb/>
a sequel,<lb/>
which<lb/>
would fol-<lb/>
low the lead<lb/>
character<lb/>
(played by<lb/>
Neve<lb/>
Campbell)<lb/>
to college,<lb/>
where she pledges a sorority and<lb/>
encounters another killer. Miramax sug-<lb/>
gested several universities where<lb/>
could do research for the sequel, but<lb/>
Williamson insisted on ECU.<lb/>
"ECU has opened the doors to me<lb/>
I couldn't have gone anywhere else he'<lb/>
said.<lb/>
He spent his time on campus<lb/>
recently touring sorority and fraternity<lb/>
houses and talking to the Panhellenic<lb/>
Council. He also observed acting class-<lb/>
es in the theatre department in prepa-<lb/>
ration for his directing debut in The<lb/>

ANDY TURNER<lb/>
SENIOR WRITER<lb/>
I felt an old man at the Attic on<lb/>
"Saturday night. I mean I felt Shi an old<lb/>
man at the Attic on Saturday night.<lb/>
The Vfeldt were on stage, playing<lb/>
their buttocks off, but I just couldn't get<lb/>
into it; it was not boredom really, main-<lb/>
ly disinterest and confusion. Whatever<lb/>
was the reason for these feelings, you<lb/>
query? Because I would have eaten up<lb/>
their funk-punk power rock thing a few<lb/>
years back, but the thrill was gone<lb/>
Saturday night.<lb/>
The Triangle-based band undoubt-<lb/>
edly put on an entertaining show for the<lb/>
majority of those in attendance. Women<lb/>
with big beer smiles were encouraged<lb/>
by the band to shake and fling about on<lb/>
stage. Males with bigger beer smiles<lb/>
stared spit-eyed at the stage as the<lb/>
shaking and flinging continued, until<lb/>
finally the testosterone kicked in and<lb/>
the males shook their heads furiously<lb/>
and slammed into one another.<lb/>
It sure was puny I would have cer-<lb/>
tainly enjoyed the glorious display as a<lb/>
freshmen, and, in fact, I did enjoy it<lb/>
when Follow For Now and Johnny<lb/>
Quest (I'll admit it, dammit) did the<lb/>
same thing back when the New Deli<lb/>
was still in existence.<lb/>
Still, the Veldt's music seemed old,<lb/>
like me. Energy and enthusiasm were<lb/>
plentiful; however, the music seemed<lb/>
like it belonged to the late '80s and<lb/>
early 90s, the gtory days of similar<lb/>
sounding bands such as Living Colour<lb/>
and 24-7 Spyz. The band, who once had<lb/>
a contract with Mercury Records and<lb/>
appeared in the Salt-N-Fepa video<lb/>
"The End isn't trendy (a good thing),<lb/>
but they aren't incredibly original either.<lb/>
You've heard it before, not necessarily<lb/>
any better, but you've heard it over and<lb/>
over again.<lb/>
I found the opening act, Nil Lara,<lb/>
unentertaining for reasons not relating<lb/>
to age. Boring. Boring. Boring. Lara and<lb/>
his band came off as sort of hellish cross<lb/>
between Live and the Dave Matthews<lb/>
Band wth a SpanishLatino music fla-<lb/>
vor. Two-thirds of that hybrid disgusts<lb/>
me. Have I ever mentioned that I like<lb/>
Los Lobos and the Gypsy Kings? Roots<lb/>
rockers, however, will more than likely<lb/>
not share my appraisal of Lara. He could<lb/>
probably be king of the root men if<lb/>
Dave Matthews ever gets offed.<lb/>
Not that I'm suggesting any offing.<lb/>

DALE WILLIAMSON<lb/>
ASSISTANT LIFESTYLE EDITOR<lb/>
Valentine's Day is one of those holidays<lb/>
that people either embrace with senti-<lb/>
mental pride, or cringe with nausea at<lb/>
the mere mention of. If you are of the<lb/>
latter group, then you won't appreciate<lb/>
what I am about to present - my per-<lb/>
sonal picks for the best romantic films<lb/>
available on video.<lb/>
Love takes on many forms, therefore<lb/>
the following list is an attempt to<lb/>
appease ail those eclectic romantics out<lb/>
there.<lb/>
Traditional love - Many may scratch<lb/>
their heads at this choice, but I have<lb/>
always considered It's a Wonderful Life to<lb/>
be an extremely romantic film. Jimmy<lb/>
Stewart and Donna Reed use their clas-<lb/>
sic star power to wonderful effect and<lb/>
make Frank Capra's fairy tale timeless.<lb/>
Classy love - British actress Emma<lb/>
Thompson and Chinese director Ang<lb/>
Lee are both highly respected for pro-<lb/>
ducing feature films with class, and<lb/>
their collaboration on Jane Austen's<lb/>
Sense aid SensMSty is no exception. This<lb/>
period piece ideally illustrates how class<lb/>
structures can't always conquer true<lb/>
love.<lb/>
Funny love - W: have a tie! I have to<lb/>
include Rob Reiner's Men Harry Met<lb/>
Salty, if for no other reason than the fact<lb/>
that it features Meg Ryan faking an<lb/>
intense orgasm in a restaurant.<lb/>
However, I can't praise Reiner's film<lb/>
without mentioning the film that obvi-<lb/>
ously inspired it: wfaody Allen's Annie<lb/>
Hall. Allen almost redefined the very<lb/>
notion of love with this hilarious, neu-<lb/>
rotic story of a metropolitan couple.<lb/>
These two movies would make a great<lb/>
double feature for most any couple.<lb/>
Tough love - While Peter War's film<lb/>
Witness is typically cited as a detective<lb/>
drama, it is also an exemplary romance.<lb/>
The detective plot, involving a young<lb/>
Amish boy (Lukas Haas) who witnesses<lb/>
a murder, is secondary to the love<lb/>
between the detective (Harrison Ford)<lb/>
and the boy's mother (Kelly McGillis).<lb/>
Ford and McGillis, in a hypnotizing<lb/>
scene, share one of the most passionate<lb/>
kisses ever captured on film.<lb/>
Twisted love - V&tching Nicolas<lb/>
Cage drink himself to death in Mike<lb/>
Figgis' Leaving Las Vegas is not as unnerv-<lb/>
ing as watching Elisabeth Shuc slowly<lb/>
fall in love with him. This romance<lb/>
between a dying alcoholic and a prosti-<lb/>
tute may not suit everyone's taste, but<lb/>
it is one love story that definitely<lb/>
impacts on the viewer.<lb/>
Violent love - When Quentin<lb/>
Tarantino (best known for writing and<lb/>
directing the ulira-violent films<lb/>
Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Return) and<lb/>
Tony Scott (the director of Top Gun and<lb/>
The Last Boy Scout) take on the theme of<lb/>
love, the resulting product can only be<lb/>
True Romance. Don't let the title fool<lb/>
Elizabeth Shue and Nicolas Cage win our coveted<lb/>
Twisted Love award for Leaving las togas.<lb/>

you, though. This film features a young<lb/>
couple (Christian Slater and Patricia<lb/>
Arquette) who kill a drug dealer and<lb/>
race to California to sell a large supply of<lb/>
cocaine they've stolen. This is not the<lb/>
kind of love that Hallmark promotes on<lb/>
its Valentine's Day cards.<lb/>
Tender love - If you're in the mood<lb/>
for an innocent, coming-of-age, mod-<lb/>
em-day classic, then took no further<lb/>
than Sixteen Candles. Motty Ringwald<lb/>
was every teenage boy's dream girl<lb/>
when this film first came out, am<lb/>
Anthony Michael Hall was actualfi<lb/>
funny. The story, involving a young girl'<lb/>
awkward crush on the popular higl<lb/>
school jock, paints an ideal dream corrM<lb/>
true that can only happen in thi<lb/>
movies.<lb/>
Space love -1 can't resist includin<lb/>

Surf your way to romance<lb/>
Shakespeare was given a jolt of new energy last year when Leonardo<lb/>
DiCaprio and Claire Danes took on the romantic leads in William<lb/>
Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. While this film adaptation of the play is not<lb/>
Shakespeare, it still proves to be an effective exercise in interpretation.<lb/>
With its contemporary setting and hip sense of fashion, this Romeo & Juliet<lb/>
illustrates how there is more than one way to brush up your Shakespeare.<lb/>
Any loving couple looking for something to do on Valentine's Day should<lb/>
take advantage of this worthwhile movie. It's not exactly a happy love<lb/>
story, but it's still a love story.<lb/>

Even if you tend to pull failing grades<lb/>
when it comes to the school of love,<lb/>
there's no reason to be lonely this<lb/>

Several websites offer lessons in the<lb/>
art of romance. After a few hours of<lb/>
studying these sites' secrets, you can<lb/>
deliver your sweetheart a love poem<lb/>
Cyrano would envy - or even the stars<lb/>
in the sky.<lb/>
For example, the Love and Romance<lb/>
Home Pag! (www.electpress.comlove-<lb/>

find the love of your life, then keep the<lb/>
fires of love burning bright through the<lb/>
years<lb/>
According to the site, the way to<lb/>
catch your sweetie's attention, of<lb/>
course, is by sending a mushy love let-<lb/>
ter. In case the only rhyme you've com-<lb/>
mitted to memory is an off-color limer-<lb/>

example: "Your silken hair can<lb/>

the beauty of your lovely eyes<lb/>

if you'd like to impress your intended<lb/>

For a fee, cards with Shakespeare's<lb/>

Historians can learn more about the<lb/>
origins of Valentine's Day, or<lb/>
"Lupcrcalia" as ancient Roman wolf-<lb/>
haters called it, on the site Amoreonthe<lb/>

also a short biography of Cupid.<lb/>
Those who still need to sweeten<lb/>
their social skills might enjoy<lb/>
Sugarplums (www.w2.comvalentines.<lb/>

your kissabiliry") is set against a pink<lb/>
background of puckering lips.<lb/>
Sugarplums claims to celebrate "all that<lb/>
is romantic" and includes a lot of sen-<lb/>
suous recipes.<lb/>
Also, there are tips on which flowers<lb/>
to send. For instance, the gift of a cac-<lb/>
tus means "My heart burns with love<lb/>
for you whereas a geranium simply<lb/>
says, "You are my true friend<lb/>
Sugarplums even has the answer to<lb/>
the burning question: what does a <lb/>

STAFF WRITF.R<lb/>
People don't read poetry anymore and I blame the academia,<lb/>
the hundreds of professors and high school teachers who real-<lb/>
ly do teach poetry like the text in Dead Poet's Society - graph-<lb/>
ing the slope of meaning against the curve of language or<lb/>
something egg-headed liKe that.<lb/>
While those academics continue to spend more time get-<lb/>
ting their own work published than on making poetry excit-<lb/>
ing to their students, they have removed themselves from<lb/>
the flow of culture. Little do they realize that poetry has<lb/>
packed up shop and moved into the arena of popular music,<lb/>
with such writing geniuses as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen,<lb/>
Raul Simon, Michael Stipe, Bono, Sting, Q-tip, Nas and<lb/>
Tricky. In a literate culture, poetry has become the property<lb/>
of the common man.<lb/>
Of course, your professor won't admit that to you. That's<lb/>
why the poets of the cafe on East Third Street in New York<lb/>
City have released an anthology of their own work, AJoud,<lb/>
Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Cafe - to pull poetry down from<lb/>
the ivory tower and return it to people it was written for us.<lb/>
As editor Bob Holrnan writes in the intro to the anthology:<lb/>
This book dares to state the obvious - RAP IS POETRY -<lb/>
and its spoken essence is central to the popularization of<lb/>
poetry Poetry is no longer an exhibit in a dust museum.<lb/>
Poetry is alive: poetry is allowed<lb/>
The Nuyorican Poets Cafe is the gathering place fix (you<lb/>
guessed it) those who would call themselves Nuyoricans,<lb/>
once only a word describing those New Yorkers of Puerto<lb/>
Rican descent, now expanded to include any "denizen of the<lb/>
Nuyorican Poets Cafe The Nuyoricans consider them-<lb/>
selves and all poets "stateless people and if this is true,<lb/>
then Aloud is their Declaration of Independence and<lb/>
Constitution rolled up into one.<lb/>
The anthology moves alphabetically. The styles repre-<lb/>
sented range from classic modernism (Adriennc Su's<lb/>
"Address") to Hispanic hip-hop (Christian Hayc's "Sendin<lb/>
out a RB), to poetry of race and politics (Bob Hoiman's<lb/>
"1990") to language-poetry, combining Spanish and English<lb/>
(Jose Montoya's "El Sol Y 'L Rovato Loco") to pure rhythmic<lb/>
performance poetry (Emily XYZ's brilliant two-voice poem<lb/>
"Slot Machine").<lb/>
The poems are flavored by pop culture, classical educa-<lb/>
tions, Hispanic and ghetto traditions, TV ads, popular music,<lb/>
and the beauty of sound and meaning meshed together.<lb/>
Topics range from romantic to political, from tributes to pure<lb/>

Scream<lb/>
continued from page 6<lb/>
Faculty, a major motion picture due out<lb/>
around Halloween.<lb/>
Lessons he learned while in the<lb/>
theatre department pay off everyday,<lb/>
Williamson said.<lb/>
"I was very lucky to come here -<lb/>
this theatre department has a number<lb/>
of success stories, including dancers,<lb/>
production designers and so on he<lb/>
added. "They make a living at it<lb/>
Like those people, Williamson said,<lb/>
he hopes he has a "long-lasting, con-<lb/>
servative" career instead of flaming out<lb/>
quickly.<lb/>
Hb experiences at ECU outside of<lb/>
the theatre department also helped<lb/>
him out with Scream. He attributed<lb/>
some of the film's wickedness and<lb/>
aspects of its dialogue to his ECU<lb/>
experiences. Perhaps more important-<lb/>
ly, though, ECU taught him the skill of<lb/>
beer bong construction. Williamson's<lb/>
homemade hardware store beer bong<lb/>
is used during a party scene in the<lb/>
movie. The actors had to be instructed<lb/>
on proper funnel techniques.<lb/>
"Wes Craven didn't even know<lb/>
what a beer bong was Williamson<lb/>
explained. "I told him, 'You didn't go<lb/>
to ECU<lb/>
It should be no surprise that<lb/>
Williamson would be proficient in<lb/>
making a beer bong as his film credits<lb/>
include playing "the drunk American<lb/>
guy" in the 1994 movie Dirty Money.<lb/>
The success of Scream has made<lb/>
Williamson a man very much in<lb/>
demand in Hollywood. In addition to<lb/>
The Rtcuity, which he describes as The<lb/>
Breakfast Club meets Invasion of the Body<lb/>
Snatchers, and the Scream sequel, due<lb/>
out in the summer of 1998, Williamson<lb/>
is working on the screen adaptation of<lb/>
the suspense thriller novel, Know<lb/>

celibate priests in the "St. Augustine<lb/>

More serious numbers express his<lb/>

Sting's jazzy-rock style fits the sub-<lb/>

Lyle Lovett - Love Everybody.<lb/>
Lyle got married, too. Remember the<lb/>
quick courtship with actress Julia<lb/>
Roberts? In a big-band mesh of coun-<lb/>
try and jazz, Lovett enjoys the spill-<lb/>
over of love into the rest of life. Being<lb/>
in love makes him love everybody, as -<lb/>
he demonstrates on the title track.<lb/>
Playfully acknowledging his "ugly<lb/>
duckling" status, he offers numbers<lb/>
like "Skinny Legs" and "Creeps Like<lb/>
Me Most of the time, he just glows<lb/>
with adoration though, as in "Ain't It<lb/>

is perfect for spring driving.<lb/>
Starflyer 59 - Starftyer 59 (Gold).<lb/>

drawing on the recording techniques<lb/>
and styles of the early 70's. Like a<lb/>
minimalist Billy Corgan or a cross<lb/>
between Hendrix and Brian Wilson,<lb/>
Martin crafts subtle, moving portraits<lb/>
of unrequited love. The emotion of<lb/>
the songs is in the stark guitar solos<lb/>
and the soulful arrangements. The<lb/>
lyrics serve only as a focus for the<lb/>
strong emotion of Martin's guitar.<lb/>
"Dual Overhead Cam" is a five-<lb/>
minute opus with only one line:<lb/>

The Runners-Up:<lb/>
John Coltrane - Lush Life. A synco-<lb/>

artistic peak of "surf rock<lb/>
Paul Simon - Graceland. Simon's<lb/>

the world of dating.<lb/>
Billie Holliday - Greatest Hits.<lb/>

Rodman has friendlier encounter with cameraman<lb/>
CHICAGO (AP) - Dennis Rodman ran into a cameraman - again - and<lb/>
responded with a smile and a tap instead of a kick. He also avoided a<lb/>
confrontation with a former head-butt victim.<lb/>
He battled Anthonv Mason, grabbed 14 rebounds and helped the<lb/>
Chicago Bulls beat the Charlotte Hornets 103-100 Tuesday night, a vic-<lb/>
tory that was delivered bv Michael Jordan's 3-pointer at the buzzer.<lb/>
As he walked off the court, Jordan hugged Rodman and said,<lb/>
"Welcome back<lb/>
Rodman's return from an 11-game NBA suspension - for kicking a<lb/>
cameraman in Minnesota on Jan. 15 - couldn't have been much better<lb/>
"He kept his composure said Jordan, who scored 43 points in the<lb/>
Bulls' 15th consecutive home victory. "He did just the opposite of what<lb/>
he did last time. He learned his lesson<lb/>
With 559 to play, Rodman fouled Mason and stumbled out of bounds,<lb/>
where he tripped over WGN-TV cameraman Tommy Skinner. Rodman<lb/>
smiled, patted Skinner playfully on the chest and apologized into the<lb/>
cumcrs<lb/>
"I just said. Are you all right? Are you all right? Please tell me you re<lb/>
all right u Rodman said.<lb/>
"Are you happy, David Stern?"<lb/>
Pa's day finally comes at Westminster<lb/>
NEW YORK (AP) - Family business kept Pa away from the Westminster<lb/>
Kennel Club Show last year.<lb/>
This year, the standard schnauzer with the dignified gray moustache<lb/>
finally got his chance. He made the most of it, winning the best in show<lb/>
award Tuesday at the nation's most prestigious dog competition.<lb/>
Pa - Ch. Parsifal Di Casa Netzer in the show ring - was the pick of the<lb/>
working group, one of hundreds of titles he has won as the nation's top<lb/>
standard schnauzer for the past three years.<lb/>
He sat out last year's Westminster because the best-in-show judge<lb/>
was Roy Holloway, father of his handler and father-in-law of one of his<lb/>
owners. ,<lb/>
When the victory was announced, Rita Holloway, the co-owner and<lb/>
wife of Holloway's son Douglas, burst into sobs on the sidelines. "Give<lb/>
me a Kleenex or something she said as friends threw their arms around<lb/>
her. A laughing Roy Holloway shook hands all around as the new cham-<lb/>
pion, nearly as silver as his trophy, posed for pictures.<lb/>
Belle gives lawsuit deposition; discusses gambling<lb/>
CLEVELAND (AP) - Albert Belle admitted in a deposition he recently<lb/>
lost as much as $40,000 gambling on pro football and college basketball<lb/>
games, a lawyer who questioned him said today.<lb/>
Belle, who made a free-agent move to the Chicago White Sox from<lb/>
the Cleveland Indians last fall, made the statement under oath Tuesday<lb/>
while answering questions for a deposition in a lawsuit filed over a con-<lb/>
frontation he had with Halloween pranksters, attorney Richard Lillie<lb/>
Lillie represents a teen-age boy whose guardian, Sandra Abdul-<lb/>
Razzaaq of Cleveland Heights, claims Belle injured the boy when chas-<lb/>
ing him in his truck on Oct. 31, 1995. The suit seeks $300,000 in dam-<lb/>
ages. . c<lb/>
The request for damages was reduced from an original amount ot<lb/>
$850,000, said Belle's attorney, Jose Feliciano.<lb/>
Feliciano would not comment on Belle's testimony Tuesday and did<lb/>
not return a call seeking comment today.<lb/>
He told The Plain Dealer that Belle, "like many other players, does<lb/>
bet on games outside his own sport Feliciano said. He characterized<lb/>
the matter as "silly and petty" and "no big deal<lb/>
Coach to successor: Get a long-term contract<lb/>
EVANSTON, III. (AP) - Outgoing Northwestern basketball coach Ricky<lb/>
Byrdsong says that unless his successor gets more support from the<lb/>
administration and a long-term contract, the program will continue to<lb/>
"I really feel it is and can be a good job said Byrdsong, who spoke<lb/>
publicly Tuesday for the first time since being fired the previous day by<lb/>
athletic director Rick Taylor.<lb/>
"But I stand firm on the fact that the coach-who inherits this job will<lb/>
find himself in the exact same state that I was. He can blame it on me.<lb/>
He can say it was a domino that started before he got here and he d be<lb/>
right. And he won't spin out of it unless they give him a long time. This<lb/>
administration is going to have to step to the plate<lb/>
In his first season, 1993-94, Byrdsong took the Wildcats to the Nl 1.<lb/>
But that team was full of uppcrclassmen. After that, he said, the cup-<lb/>
board was bare.<lb/>
"There were not bad players after them, there were no players,<lb/>
Byrdsong said. "And with our academic standards, you can't go to the<lb/>
junior-college ranks. We had to start this program over from scratch<lb/>
Johnson's high school gym named after him<lb/>
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - His No. 32 has been retired at Michigan State's<lb/>
Breslin Center and at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles.<lb/>
Magic Johnson's high school went a step further Tuesday night, nam-<lb/>
ing the school's gymnasium after the former Los Angeles Lakers guard.<lb/>
The ceremony was held at halftime of Iansing Everett's game against<lb/>
Jackson.<lb/>
"Every game here was special he said. "When you came to the gym,<lb/>
if you didn't get here by the junior varsity game, you didn't get a seat<lb/>
The school unveiled a banner bearing Johnson's No. 32 jersey hang-<lb/>
ing from one corner of the gymnasium. The school also installed a plaque<lb/>
in the gym hall and gave Johnson a plaque of his own.<lb/>
Johnson said his favorite memory was winning the state champi-<lb/>
onship for Everett in 1977 and returning to Lansing "with everyone<lb/>
blowing their horns. Everyone on the south side was going crazy"<lb/>
MIKE DAN!SKA<lb/>
STAFF WRITER<lb/>
As a new spring season of tennis rolls<lb/>
around again at ECU, the expecta-<lb/>
tions are high. The men's team, who<lb/>
look to improve on last year's fifth<lb/>
place conference finish, hope to<lb/>
turn the corner and make their pres-<lb/>
ence felt in the C. Meanwhile,<lb/>
the women hope to continue their<lb/>
steady improvement, which pro-<lb/>
duced a sixth place finish in confer-<lb/>
ence play last year.<lb/>
The men's team is lead by Head<lb/>
Coach Bill Moore, who, in his ninth<lb/>
season, has changed the course of<lb/>
the program.<lb/>
"When I got here Moore said,<lb/>
"it was a pretty bad program. But we<lb/>
are definitely getting better; we are<lb/>
going in a positive direction<lb/>
One quality that has made it eas-<lb/>
ier to succeed has been the rather<lb/>
easy friendship between Moore and<lb/>
his plavers.<lb/>
"We really like him Derek Slate<lb/>
said. "He helps us out mentally. He<lb/>
is a laid back guy, but he likes to<lb/>
win<lb/>
Another reason for Moore's suc-<lb/>
cess has been his ability to recruit<lb/>
top players in recent years, especial-<lb/>
ly his ability to recruit top foreign<lb/>
plavers, who compose half of the<lb/>
team's eight man roster. Starter<lb/>
Roope Kalajo and Daniel Prevelic of<lb/>
Sweden, Sreven Siebenbrunner of<lb/>
Austria and returning starter Nils<lb/>
Alomar of Spain have all helped to<lb/>
contribute to the team this year.<lb/>
Brett Rowley, Jason Freeman and<lb/>
starters Kenny Kirby and Wes<lb/>
Kintner round out this young and<lb/>
talented squad.<lb/>
"You don't have to have foreign<lb/>
plavers to win, but you have to have<lb/>
a strong tradition to attract the real-<lb/>
ly good American players Kirby<lb/>
said.<lb/>
So far this spring, the guys have<lb/>
been playing well, a reflection of<lb/>
their hard work during the individ-<lb/>
ual tournament season of the fall.<lb/>
"The fall season went really<lb/>
good. It is mainly to get everybody's<lb/>
game ready Slate said. "So far in<lb/>
the Spring season, we have played<lb/>
our best stuff ever<lb/>
The team is 3-3 overall and have<lb/>
notched wins over Georgetown,<lb/>
College of Charleston and confer-<lb/>
ence rival James Madison. While<lb/>
suffering setbacks to Wake Forest.<lb/>
South Carolina and East Tennessee<lb/>
State.<lb/>
"We have beaten the universities<lb/>
that we are supposed to beat<lb/>
Prevalic said.<lb/>
This weekend, the team travels<lb/>
to Charlotte to do battle with<lb/>
Davidson, UNC-Asheville and<lb/>
Pfeiffer.<lb/>
"We are a pretty young team this<lb/>
year, so we are building up the<lb/>
team Siebenbrunner said. "Next<lb/>
year we will be even better<lb/>
Those same sentiments ring true<lb/>
for the women's team, led by coach<lb/>
Jamie Holt. 24. While it may be only-<lb/>
he his first year on the job, he has<lb/>
the experience to back it up. Holt<lb/>
plaved for and was an assistant to<lb/>
the men's team. And just like<lb/>
Moore, the players really like him.<lb/>
"He is young and nice Anne-<lb/>
Birgette Svae said. "He is relaxed.<lb/>
He wants to accomplish a lot and<lb/>
puts a lot of effort in to the team. So<lb/>
far, he is doing a pretty good job<lb/>
Just like their male counterparts,<lb/>
the women's team plays a few for-<lb/>
eign players. Mona Eek and Svae<lb/>
both hail from Norway. The rest of<lb/>
this deep and talented team include<lb/>
Catherine Morgan, Jena McDonald,<lb/>
Corissa Cheek and team captains<lb/>
Rachel Cohen and Hollyn Gordon.<lb/>
While these talented players help<lb/>
the cause by beating other schools,<lb/>
thev also heip to motivate their own<lb/>
teammates to greatness.<lb/>
"They motivate me a lot Cheek<lb/>
said. "I like to watch their form a<lb/>
lot<lb/>
The women have yet to play a<lb/>
match this spring, but did well in<lb/>
the fall. They hope, however, to get<lb/>
a ranking in the region. To do this<lb/>
they will have to play to the best of<lb/>
their ability, however, because the<lb/>
CAA tournament and conference<lb/>
games are played in the spring.<lb/>
Their first test of the season will be<lb/>
on Feb. 21, when they travel to<lb/>
Davidson.<lb/>
"We have a good chance at beat-<lb/>
ing Davidson Svae said. "We have a<lb/>
good team and it is going to be a<lb/>
good match<lb/>
The women have only one senior,<lb/>
Gordon, so this young and talented<lb/>
group with some experience, should<lb/>
be even better next year. The team<lb/>
feels that it is heading in the right<lb/>
direction.<lb/>
"We are doing pretty good Svae<lb/>
said. "We have a good conditioning<lb/>
program and our coach is young but<lb/>
experienced. We are a better team<lb/>
now than last spring<lb/>
The next few seasons will be the<lb/>
testimony to these two team's tal-<lb/>
ent and determination. If they both<lb/>
continue to play better and come<lb/>
together as teams, their goals should<lb/>
be within reach.<lb/>

It's about pride; it's about determina-<lb/>
tion, and most importantly, it's about<lb/>
sticking together and fighting until<lb/>
the end.<lb/>
The ECU men's swim team fin-<lb/>
ished the 1996-97 season with the<lb/>
highest overall winning percentage in<lb/>
its history. Iead by team captains<lb/>
Lee Hutchens and Alex Vitier, the<lb/>
men are heading into the CAA con-<lb/>
ference championship next week<lb/>
with a 10-1 record, a lot of confidence<lb/>
and a winning attitude.<lb/>
Last year, the team ended their<lb/>
season with an overall record of 7-3<lb/>
and a fifth place finish at the confer-<lb/>
ence championships.<lb/>
According to Dave Rountree, a<lb/>
junior from Raleigh, this season's suc-<lb/>
cess has been the result of a truly<lb/>
united and dedicated team.<lb/>
"Last year, it seemed like every-<lb/>
one on the team was only out for their<lb/>
own personal win Rountree said.<lb/>
"This year, everyone has been so sup-<lb/>
portive of the team as a whole<lb/>
Rountree said that being part of a<lb/>
team that has offered him so much<lb/>
encouragement has helped him<lb/>
improve tremendously.<lb/>
"Everyone on our team really<lb/>
respects one another Rountree said.<lb/>
"We have all encouraged each other<lb/>
to push ourselves hard not only in<lb/>
meets but also at practices, and that<lb/>
is why we have lx:cn so successful<lb/>
Teammate Vitier agrees that team<lb/>
unitv has been what set this season<lb/>
aside from the rest.<lb/>
"Everyone gave 100 percent all of<lb/>
the time for the sake of the team.<lb/>
That's why we are here right now<lb/>
Vitier said.<lb/>
Among the most challenging<lb/>
teams the men faced this year were<lb/>
Old Dominion and UNC<lb/>
Wilmington. The Pirates edged out<lb/>
Old Dominion and claimed what is<lb/>
considered by most to be the most<lb/>
rewarding and exciting win of the sea-<lb/>
son. The match-up against UNCVV<lb/>
was the only loss the men turned in<lb/>
for the year.<lb/>
According to Hutchens. the most<lb/>
memorable moment of the season<lb/>
was when the team came out on top<lb/>
in the meet against ODl As he said,<lb/>
the victory was won "the right way<lb/>
"The people who sw am in the Old<lb/>
Dominion meet were the people who<lb/>
wanted it the most Hutchens said.<lb/>
"Everyone was giving it there all, and<lb/>
the whole team really concentrated<lb/>
on staying focused<lb/>
Hutchens said that this season<lb/>
was by far the most unbelievable of<lb/>
any in his experiences as a swimmer.<lb/>
In his opinion, it was the effort put in<lb/>
by the coaches that made the team<lb/>
really stand out and end the season<lb/>
with such an outstanding record.<lb/>
"Our coaches are always there for<lb/>
us, pushing us hard to keep going and<lb/>
stav focused Hutchens said.<lb/>
With the conference champi-<lb/>
onship only days away, the men are<lb/>
concentrating mostly on resting and<lb/>
keeping focused for the work that is<lb/>
yet to be done. Keeping up the ener-<lb/>
gy level in the water seems to be the<lb/>
primarv goal of each member of the<lb/>
team.<lb/>
According to Rountree, the high-<lb/>
light of the season will be seen at con-<lb/>
ference. Since the entire season is<lb/>
built around how successful the team<lb/>
will be in the championship, most of<lb/>
the men are finding it hard to con-<lb/>
centrate on anything but the meet.<lb/>
"We have a legitimate shot to<lb/>
come away from this meet as confer-<lb/>
ence champions Rountree said.<lb/>
"Everyone swims their fastest at<lb/>
CAA, so it is likely that some of our<lb/>
current records will be broken<lb/>
The men are certain this season's<lb/>
success will benefit ECU's sw im pro-<lb/>
gram in the years to come. By making<lb/>
such a strong showing at the meets<lb/>
this year, an extremely positive state-<lb/>
ment has been made about what goes<lb/>
on in the water in Pirate territory.<lb/>
"The program has nowhere to go<lb/>
but up from here Hutchens said.<lb/>
"The tetter we do, the better our<lb/>
recruits will be. As we continue to<lb/>
improve and more people begin to<lb/>
notice our talent, more athletes are<lb/>
going to be interested in coming to<lb/>
ECU and being a part of the team<lb/>
Vitier expects that a lot of people<lb/>
will be surprised to see the men from<lb/>
ECU make such a competitive show-<lb/>
ing at conference because not many<lb/>
people are aware of the drastic turn-<lb/>
around this team has made in terms<lb/>
of bringing in wins.<lb/>
It is predicted that the toughest<lb/>
team to beat at the conference cham-<lb/>
pionship will be JMU. The ultimate<lb/>
goal of the team is to come away as<lb/>
number one. but no matter what hap-<lb/>
pens at (AV these men are winners.<lb/>
The VCU Rams handed ECU a 66-<lb/>
73 overtime loss last night in Minges.<lb/>
The Pirates jumped out quickly<lb/>
and held a six point advantage, 10-4<lb/>
after two made free throws by Tom<lb/>
Parham. That would be the biggest<lb/>
lead the Pirates would have in the<lb/>
first half.<lb/>
At the half, ECU led 32-29, as<lb/>
Raphael Edwards led the way with 11<lb/>
points, followed by Othello Meadows<lb/>
with seven.<lb/>
Jonathan Kerner left mid-way<lb/>
through the first with a left hand<lb/>
injury and didn't return, and senior<lb/>
starter Tim Basham was out the<lb/>
entire game with the flu.<lb/>
The second half proved to be<lb/>
crazy. Questionable calls had the<lb/>
coaches and fans in a furry. At the<lb/>
7:39 mark ECU was down one, 52-<lb/>
53. At that point Meadows nailed a<lb/>
trey and on the next possession<lb/>
Edwards hit a lav up for the 57-53<lb/>
lead.<lb/>
VCU battled back and tied the<lb/>
game up at 60 apiece and a five<lb/>
minute overtime was in effect.<lb/>
VCU scored the first seven points<lb/>
before ECU took a timeout. With<lb/>
2:09 left in OT, Edwards fouled out<lb/>
with 16 points.<lb/>
Parham was the onlv Pirate to<lb/>
score in OT and had six points. ECU<lb/>
now falls to 7-5 in the CAA and is tied<lb/>
with JMU, while VCU improves to 8-<lb/>
5 and is tied with UNC-VV for the top<lb/>
spot in the conference.<lb/>
Meadows had 17 points for the<lb/>
game, while Parham had 12. and<lb/>
Morns (irooms finished with 10.<lb/>

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) -<lb/>
Figure skater Tonya Harding says<lb/>
she was abducted outside her<lb/>
home vesterday and escaped with-<lb/>
out serious injuries when she<lb/>
drove her pickup truck into a tree<lb/>
and fled. . <lb/>
"This guv just hijacked her,<lb/>
said Damon Coates, a spokesman<lb/>
for the Clackamas County sheriff s<lb/>
office. . ,<lb/>
Harding said a "bushy haired<lb/>
man abducted her early today out-<lb/>
side her Oak Grove home and<lb/>
forced her to drive him to Mulino,<lb/>
about 30 minutes away.<lb/>
She said the assailant might<lb/>
have pressed a knife against her<lb/>
cheek, but she didn't get a good<lb/>
enough look to know if he carried a<lb/>
weapon.<lb/>
Coates said Harding received<lb/>
minor injuries when her assailant<lb/>
slapped her, but she was not sexu-<lb/>
ally assaulted.<lb/>
The skater said she escaped by<lb/>
driving her pickup into a tree along<lb/>
a country road, then running into<lb/>
the woods. She hid in the brush<lb/>
and, when her assailant ran past,<lb/>
ran back to her truck and drove<lb/>
into town.<lb/>
Harding's agent, David Hans<lb/>
Schmidt, said from Phoenix that<lb/>
she was up most of the night<lb/>
assisting investigators.<lb/>
"Tonya's resting safely, tie<lb/>
said. . . . ,<lb/>
Schmidt said the incident<lb/>
would not affect plans for Harding<lb/>
to begin a comeback with a three-<lb/>
minute skating exhibition Feb. ZZ<lb/>
in Reno, Nev.<lb/>
Coates said Harding used her<lb/>
cell phone to call her boyfriend<lb/>
when she got back into Oregon<lb/>
City, and one of the two called<lb/>
911 There was no indication the<lb/>
assailant realized the figure<lb/>
skater's identity, Coates said.<lb/>
The incident began about 1<lb/>
a.m. when Harding went outside<lb/>
to get cigarettes out of her truck,<lb/>
Coates said. He said Harding told<lb/>
investigators that she encountered<lb/>
a man "fooling around" under the<lb/>
hood of another vehicle on her<lb/>
property.<lb/>
Harding told police the man<lb/>
forced her into her pickup and<lb/>
made her drive from her Oak<lb/>

Game clock controversy<lb/>
spoils Virginia's hope<lb/>
CHARLOTTESV1LLE, Vi (AP) -<lb/>
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski came<lb/>
pretr close to apologizing tor the<lb/>
Blue Devils' 62-61 vkrton over<lb/>
Virginia Tuesday nisihr. a game that<lb/>
plunged into confusion in rhe final<lb/>
seconds because of a timekeeping<lb/>
dispute.<lb/>
"It's too had - it's a ven. difficult<lb/>
loss tor them Krzyzewski said<lb/>
after Tuesday's jjame. "I don'r want<lb/>
to win by any shenanigans. Wins<lb/>
are not that important<lb/>
Virginia coach Jeff Jones said his<lb/>
plavers were robbed of an upset.<lb/>
"They found a ua against a<lb/>
very good Duke team to win. and<lb/>
they took it away from them<lb/>
Jones said. "Basically, the officials<lb/>
blamed the clock operators<lb/>
Duke's Steve Wojciechou ski.<lb/>
who hit two free throws with sev-<lb/>
enth-tenths of a second left to win<lb/>
the game for the No. 6 Blue Devils,<lb/>
said there was nothing to apologie<lb/>
for.<lb/>
"A win is a win: they don't put<lb/>
any asterisks by it<lb/>
The score was tied at 60 when<lb/>
Virginia's Norman Nolan was<lb/>
fouled with five seconds remain-<lb/>
ing. He missed the first free throw,<lb/>
then made the second for a one-<lb/>
point lead.<lb/>
The horn then blew as Virginia's<lb/>
Willie Dersch tried to check into<lb/>
the lineup, but the referees didn't<lb/>
hear it over the noise of the crowd<lb/>
and didn't stop play.<lb/>
Wojciechowski took an<lb/>
inbounds pass and. with the clock<lb/>
not yet running, drove the length<lb/>
of the court.<lb/>
Asked whether he noticed that<lb/>
Virginia's defense was in disarray<lb/>
Wojciechowski said. "I saw a bunch<lb/>
of guys at the table (where players<lb/>
check in) and I kind of waved at<lb/>
them. I got to the basket and luck-<lb/>
ily I got fouled<lb/>
The clock showed 2.2 seconds.<lb/>
After a lengthy discussion and<lb/>
reviewing television replays, the<lb/>
referees reset the clock to seventh-<lb/>
tenths of' a second and<lb/>
Wojciechowski made both foul<lb/>
shots while agitated Cavalier fans<lb/>
screamed.<lb/>
"I didn't hear a thin when I<lb/>
was at the line Wojciechowski<lb/>
said. "Basically, I said. I've done<lb/>
this a million times. This isn't am<lb/>
different<lb/>
Ricky Price and Koshown<lb/>
McCleod each had 13 points for<lb/>
Duke (20-5, 9-3 Atlantic Coast<lb/>
Conference), which has won five in<lb/>
a row and nine of 10.<lb/>
Nolan had 16 points for Virginia<lb/>
(15-9, 5-7), which came in with a<lb/>
10-game winning streak at home,<lb/>
the longest in rhe(I.<lb/>
Virginia, which led most of the<lb/>
game, was trving to avenge a 19-<lb/>
point loss to I)ukc earlier this sea-<lb/>
son.<lb/>
Courtney Alexander missed a 3-<lb/>
pointer with 33 seconds left that<lb/>
would have put Virginia ahead by<lb/>
four. Then Wojciechowski also<lb/>
missed ,i 3-pointer with 1 1 seconds<lb/>
remaining before redeeming him-<lb/>
self.<lb/>
Asked why Dersch was not<lb/>
allowed in the game after Nolans<lb/>
free throw, referee Rick Hartell<lb/>
said. "We didn't see a sub there;<lb/>
we didn't hear a horn, fter the<lb/>
foul was called on the Virginia pla-<lb/>
er. the timer told us the clock was<lb/>
r.irred late.<lb/>
The officials then went to the<lb/>
television monitor, replayed the<lb/>
play twite and timed it with a stop<lb/>
Jones disputed the official ver-<lb/>
sion, lie said his plavers were con-<lb/>
fused and weren't readv to play<lb/>
defense, lie also said Hartell<lb/>
tried to wave Dersch in after the<lb/>
plaver told the referee rhar he was<lb/>
going in for Nolan.<lb/>
Jones protested that Dersch<lb/>
should have been allowed in and<lb/>
Duke should have the ball under<lb/>
the basket with 5 seconds left.<lb/>
"It's a shame the way the game<lb/>
ended Jones said. "It s hard to<lb/>
find anything to say to them that<lb/>
justifies what happened<lb/>
Krzyzewski said he feels fortu-<lb/>
nate the Blue Devils won. but<lb/>
added that "we made a winning<lb/>
play He said he tried to warn<lb/>
Jones and the referees that if they<lb/>
reviewed the tape. "Virginia was<lb/>
going to get messed over" because<lb/>
it the clock not starting.<lb/>
Despite the loss. Virginia led<lb/>
31-25 at the half and by as many as<lb/>
seven in the second half. The<lb/>
('avalicrs also out-rebounded Duke<lb/>
45-36 and outshot the Blue Devils<lb/>
43.6 percent to 35 percent.<lb/>
"The game's over, and we've<lb/>
got to start getting readv for<lb/>
Clemson (Saturday), as painful as<lb/>
it is Jones said.<lb/>

The 'Worm' returns to Windy City<lb/>
CHICAGO (AP) - Dennis<lb/>
Rodman's momentum carried him<lb/>
past the baseline, where he stum-<lb/>
bled over a television cameraman.<lb/>
Yes, a cameraman. Again. What<lb/>
would Rodman do this time?<lb/>
His mind flashed back to Jan. 15,<lb/>
the last game he had played for the<lb/>
Chicago Bulls. On that chilly<lb/>
Minnesota night, he made the<lb/>
wrong choice, kicking cameraman<lb/>
Eugene Amos after falling out of<lb/>
bounds.<lb/>
That resulted in an 11-game sus-<lb/>
pension from NBA commissioner<lb/>
David Stem and a $200,000 out-of-<lb/>
court settlement with Amos. It also<lb/>
drew criticism from teammates<lb/>
Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen,<lb/>
from many former basketball stars<lb/>
and from President Clinton.<lb/>
So what would Rodman do when<lb/>
faced with an almost identical situa-<lb/>
tion Tuesday night, in his first game<lb/>
back from the second-longest sus-<lb/>
pension in NBA history?<lb/>
The right thing.<lb/>
He smiled, gentry tapped the<lb/>
chest of WGN-TV cameraman<lb/>
Tommy Skinner and walked away.<lb/>
And the Bulls went on to beat the<lb/>
Charlotte Hornets 103-100 on<lb/>
Jordan's 3-pointer at the buzzer.<lb/>
"It would have been a classic if I<lb/>
kissed him said Rodman, an occa-<lb/>
sional cross-dresser. "But he proba-<lb/>
bly would have sued me for slobber-<lb/>
ing all over him<lb/>
Actually, Rodman admitted his<lb/>
first thought was to avoid trouble, a<lb/>
curious thought for someone who<lb/>
has been suspended three times in<lb/>
the last 11 months.<lb/>
"I just said, Are you all right? Are<lb/>
you all right? Please tell me you're all<lb/>
right Rodman said.<lb/>
And, of course, he couldn't wait<lb/>
to take a dig at the commissioner:<lb/>
"Are you happy, David Stem?"<lb/>
Stem probably was happy, but no<lb/>
happier than Rodman's teammates,<lb/>
who want the tattooed forward to<lb/>
help them repeat as champions.<lb/>
Jordan and Pippen had grown<lb/>
increasingly dismayed about<lb/>
Rodman. Jordan says he and Rodman<lb/>
have "no relationship and Pippen<lb/>
says Rodman "doesn't give a damn<lb/>
about most things<lb/>
Both applauded Rodman's<lb/>
demeanor Tuesday - not to mention<lb/>
his 14 rebounds and body-to-body<lb/>
defense on Charlotte standout<lb/>
Anthony Mason. Jordan even<lb/>
hugged Rodman and said, "Welcome<lb/>
back after hitting the winning<lb/>
shot.<lb/>
Nevertheless, Rodman wasn't<lb/>
happy about the recent rebukes.<lb/>
"If you don't want to stick behind<lb/>
me, don't say nothing about me at<lb/>
all the league's top rebounder said.<lb/>
"My goal is just to win a champi-<lb/>
onship. I guess if I do that, people<lb/>
are going to love me again. If I do<lb/>
something wrong, people are going<lb/>
to hate me<lb/>
Rodman also took a shot at those<lb/>
among the 50 all-time NBA greats<lb/>
who used last weekend's All-Star<lb/>
festivities to give Rodman's act a<lb/>
thumbs-down.<lb/>
"A few of those guys said, 'Kick<lb/>
his butt out he said. "They're just<lb/>
bitter because their time is past<lb/>
Rodman's final dig on the night of<lb/>
his triumphant return was reserved<lb/>
for his father. Philander, who<lb/>
watched the game after having not<lb/>
seen his son for three decades.<lb/>

Skater<lb/>

to the Mulino area south of Oregon<lb/>
City.<lb/>
When he ordered her to turn<lb/>
down a country lane in the Mulino<lb/>
area, Harding said she decided to<lb/>
drive into a roadside tree in hopes<lb/>
of diverting her assailant's atten-<lb/>
tion and escaping.<lb/>
She said the man ran after her<lb/>
into the woods but ran past as she<lb/>
hid, enabling her to run back to her<lb/>
pickup and escape. Coates said<lb/>
investigators retracing Harding's<lb/>
route found the tree with marks on<lb/>
it where it was hit by the bumper<lb/>
of her truck.<lb/>
A former U.S. national figure<lb/>
skating champion and former<lb/>
Olympian, Harding was convicted<lb/>
of criminal charges for helping<lb/>
cover up the January 1994 attack<lb/>
on her Olympic rival, Nancy<lb/>
Kerrigan. She is banned from ama-<lb/>
teur competition by the U.S.<lb/>
Figure Skating Association.<lb/>
The incident is the latest of a<lb/>
number of run-ins in which<lb/>
Harding has sought the assistance<lb/>
of police:<lb/>
-While fighting to maintain her<lb/>
spot on the 1994 U.S. Olympic<lb/>
team, Harding reported to<lb/>
Beaverton police that she was<lb/>
assaulted late at night while walk-<lb/>
ing through a park from her truck<lb/>
to the suburban apartment where<lb/>
she was staying.<lb/>
-In May 1995, Harding called<lb/>
Clackamas County authorities from<lb/>
her cell phone to report she was<lb/>
tailing a car driven by a man she<lb/>
said had been stalking her. Police<lb/>
said they were investigating<lb/>
whether the car was the same one<lb/>
that damaged a planter in front of<lb/>
Harding's house.<lb/>
-In April 1996, Harding got a<lb/>
restraining order against her<lb/>
estranged second husband, saying<lb/>
he'd threatened her and kicked in<lb/>
her bathroom door after she locked<lb/>
herself inside.<lb/>
