Chapel Hill fire<lb />
still causing alarm<lb />
Chris Loga<lb />
News Writer<lb />
To officials of the UNC system<lb />
fire safety has become a big issue<lb />
among the individual schools and<lb />
administration.<lb />
The subject became an issue<lb />
after a fire erupted at the Phi<lb />
Gamma Delta fraternity house at<lb />
the University of North Carolina at<lb />
Chapel Hill. The fire began in the<lb />
early morning last Mothers Day and<lb />
sent a wake up call to students and<lb />
faculty. Since there were no sprin-<lb />
klers in the house, the administra-<lb />
tion has elevated fire safety to the<lb />
top of its priorities list.<lb />
Fraternity houses in North<lb />
Carolina are just part of the prob-<lb />
lem. According to a recent study of<lb />
state colleges, most are in need of<lb />
a sprinkler upgrade.<lb />
The study has shown that the<lb />
cost of the needed construction will<lb />
be $55 million at minimum. This<lb />
cost would include adding sprin-<lb />
klers in dorms at 16 campuses in<lb />
North Carolina.<lb />
State officials have also re-<lb />
ported the release of funds to start<lb />
the individual projects at certain<lb />
schools.<lb />
According to Manny Amaro di-<lb />
rector of Housing Services, a re-<lb />
ported $524,500 in funds that was<lb />
supposed to start construction at<lb />
ECL' has yet to be seen.<lb />
"At this time we have not re-<lb />
ceived, nor do we expect to see anv<lb />
of that money Amaro said.<lb />
According to Amaro, it would<lb />
take a projected $14 37 million to<lb />
complete the project over a period<lb />
of 10 years.<lb />
"This project will take so long<lb />
because each building has to be<lb />
shut down for the entire<lb />
processAmaro said.<lb />
While the totals are high, some<lb />
of the headache could have been<lb />
alleviated. Amaro said that during<lb />
the renovation to Slay and Umstead<lb />
Halls, there was a conflict between<lb />
the university's intentions and<lb />
state regulations.<lb />
"The university wanted to up-<lb />
grade (buildings) then, but the ex-<lb />
tra construction would have ex-<lb />
ceeded the sate building code<lb />
Amaro said.<lb />
Amaro expressed the need for<lb />
changes to the code, which limits<lb />
and regulates what construction<lb />
can be done to an existing build-<lb />
ing. Without these changes, no con-<lb />
struction can start.<lb />
This means that even though<lb />
the state may have good intentions,<lb />
the actual construction may not<lb />
start for years.<lb />
The delay on construction<lb />
could be detrimental for students<lb />
at other schools since some have<lb />
not evaluated the problem of fire<lb />
safety yet.<lb />
Since the Chapel Hill fire, the<lb />
only results have been studies on<lb />
safety in individual schools.<lb />

Students urged to guard against theft<lb />
Scott Hopkins<lb />
News Writer<lb />
As students return to school, the ECU Police Deptartment offers recom-<lb />
mendations that students can take to protect themselves and their personal<lb />
possessions<lb />
A recent study done by the Chronicle of Higher Education reports theft<lb />
to be the top concern on college campuses.<lb />
"The public puts a lo! on the police for protection from crime, we ask that<lb />
they(students) take just a minute to lock their rooms and possessions so they<lb />
can deter a crime instead of report one said Patrolperson Sara Harris.<lb />
Harris said everyone has to deal with theft and burglary. However, on a<lb />
college campus, security of students, self and their belongings should always be<lb />
paramount on the student's mind.<lb />
Students tend to take their security and safety for granted by leaving room<lb />
or car doors unlocked, giving their keys to friends or just leaving articles of<lb />
value lying around in public places.<lb />
Last year at ECU, there were 339 reported cases of larceny(petty theft) on<lb />

News Writer<lb />
ECU'S Child Development Laboratory received an accreditation from the<lb />
National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) this past<lb />
July.<lb />
This is the second time ECL' has received this three year accreditation.<lb />
The NAEYC is one of the nation's oldest and largest organizations of early<lb />
childhood professionals. Only five percent of early childhood programs nation-<lb />
wide have received accreditation from them.<lb />
Dr. Helen Grove, Dean of the School of Human Environmental Sciences,<lb />
said the accreditation was important to parents and educators alike.<lb />
"This accreditation assures the parents and the educators that the pro-<lb />
gram is of high quality and gives the children what they need the mostGrove<lb />
said.<lb />
The lab provides a preschool environment for 52 children, ranging in age<lb />
from two to five, of the communitv. staff, and students. The youngsters are<lb />
exposed to new ideas and ways of doing things, stimulating and rich experi-<lb />
ences which help each individual grow in his or her own way. The goal of the<lb />
program is to increase the child's curiosity, confidence, their eagerness to learn,<lb />
and to help the child feel good about them self.<lb />
"We have talented and committed faculty and staff who are dedicated to<lb />
working with each other, the children and the parents to achieve a common<lb />
goal Grove said. "Our program works closely with parents. They are the true<lb />
judges thai our staff is doing their job. Our parents are highly supportive, and<lb />
our program is as good as it is because of the support or our parents<lb />

Graduate and Professional Student Federation President Katherine<lb />

regarding a new health insurance policy.<lb />
The policy, mailed to students through the U.S. Postal Service, is<lb />
underwritten by the Mid-West National Life Insurance Company of Ten-<lb />

Kraft said Tuesday she had never heard of the American College<lb />

Kraft said she was concerned the policy's claims would lead stu-<lb />

requesting advice on several legal questions she thought the policy<lb />

campus. This number is down almost<lb />
20 cases since 1994. Unfortunately, it<lb />
is still the one problem the police must<lb />
deal with the most<lb />
"Many of these incidents are from<lb />
residents simply not taking the time<lb />
to lock a door when going down the<lb />
hall Harris said.<lb />
There are many different choices<lb />
a student can make in order to deter<lb />
or dampen the effects of theft Insur-<lb />
ance is one of them.<lb />
Insurance may not stop the prob-<lb />
lem of theft, but if one's possessions<lb />
are properly identified and fully cov-<lb />
ered within the policy, it may lessen<lb />
the effects of the loss.<lb />
Students who live on campus need<lb />
to check with their parents'<lb />
homeowner's insurance policy to make<lb />
sure articles such as TV's, VCR's, and<lb />
computers are all covered by these<lb />
policies.<lb />
For students who live off campus,<lb />
independent insurance policies or rent-<lb />
ers insurance policies protect yourself<lb />
and your possessions.<lb />
According to ECU police, many<lb />
insurance companies require a photo<lb />
and engraved identification of all ar-<lb />
ticles that fall under their policies.<lb />
To help with this, the ECU police<lb />
department has implemented Opera-<lb />
tion ID.<lb />
"This program has been imple-<lb />
mented in order to protect the students<lb />
and help the police in tracking and<lb />
recovery of the articles Harris said.<lb />
The program allows students to<lb />
bring articles to the ECU police, who<lb />
will engrave the articles with the<lb />
student's license number and state.<lb />
The police will also catalog the items<lb />
by value and brand name.<lb />
Engraving allows police to iden-<lb />
tify stolen articles once they have been<lb />
found on the street and makes it pos-<lb />
sible to locate the owner.<lb />

Parking<lb />
problems are<lb />
not a new<lb />
issue. But is<lb />
ECU putting its<lb />
money into<lb />
projects which<lb />
suit the best<lb />
interests of all<lb />
students?<lb />
Complaining about parking at ECU has almost become a<lb />
cliche. Anyone who owns a car and has tried to park on or<lb />
around campus understands the problem. There are simply<lb />
not enough parking spaces to accommodate the increasing<lb />
population of ECU.<lb />
Admittedly, the university has tried its best to handle the<lb />
situation. Freshmen will temporarily be allowed to park in a<lb />
former shuttle parking area located at the corner of Charles<lb />
Boulevard and Ficklen Drive. Also, the university has suppos-<lb />
edly bought the block of land around the former Sub Station<lb />
II. This property became available when the formerly popular<lb />
student hang-out went out of business several months ago.<lb />
And let's not forget the fact that the university provides<lb />
free busing for its students so they can at least get to class.<lb />
Now, whether or not you qualify for busing privileges depends<lb />
on where you live. If you live too far from campus, you're<lb />
simply out of luck.<lb />
But the transit system is not a total solution even for those<lb />
who take advantage of it Apparently, parking is such a prob-<lb />
lem that more and more people are taking the bus, thereby<lb />
causing some serious crowding problems. One TEC employee<lb />
reports that overcrowding on ECU'S buses is so bad that stu-<lb />
dents are forced to sit on the steps leading out of the bus. Not<lb />
only is this form of seating very dangerous, but it also violates<lb />
some major traffic regulations. If a student were to be injured<lb />
because he or she was not provided safe seating on a campus<lb />
bus, ECU would have to find some cash in its seemingly empty<lb />
pocket<lb />
There really is no reason for parking to be this bad. We at<lb />
TEC acknowledge the budget cuts that this state has been<lb />
suffering, but we don't exactly accept this as an excuse for the<lb />
major parking problems ECU's population has been endur-<lb />
ing.<lb />
This campus needs many things. The restructured library<lb />
is a welcome gift We are a university, and we need a strong<lb />
library. The new recreation center, however, is something that<lb />
could have been trimmed a bit. If money is such an issue, then<lb />
take some of the money budgeted for the recreation center<lb />
and put it to sensible, effective use. Build a parking deck,<lb />
pave new lots, expand existing parking spaces, buy more buses,<lb />
do something.<lb />
We at TEC don't expect miracles. We understand how lim-<lb />
ited funds can constrain what one can do. Still, when you<lb />
break it down, ECU is a business, and any good business needs<lb />
to keep its customers happy. So, as cliched as the problem<lb />
may have become, parking is still a very real issue. And a?<lb />
paying customers, the student population demands better ser-<lb />
vice.<lb />

The hard work that has been in-<lb />
volved with the beautification of our<lb />
campus is to be appreciated. The<lb />
lovely dome in the middle of the mall<lb />
gives a particular mystique to our<lb />
university. The labor involved with<lb />
doing-up the Wright Place has been<lb />
needed for quite some time. 1 don't<lb />
mind that my tax dollars, tuition and<lb />
university fees go toward these<lb />
projects. However, for me to continue<lb />
paying my fees to help out, I need to<lb />
be able to stay in school, right?<lb />
So, if you'll just follow me for a<lb />
second, I'll make it clear where I'm<lb />
going.<lb />
In order to help out around cam-<lb />
pus, my fees have to be paid. Check.<lb />
Therefore, I must maintain a cer-<lb />

I am allowed to continue paying those<lb />
fees for campus beautification. Check.<lb />

academic saline solution. Cut that off<lb />

Now I'm not going to pretend to<lb />
know all the reasons that our univer-<lb />

Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Which<lb />
is more important-the library staff<lb />

their work? <lb />
Nobody asked me.<lb />
Nor do I recall a last minute cam<lb />

on this issue. I do know that this uni<lb />

is compiled of a joyous number of<lb />

If I'm going to continue my edu-<lb />

there is not an answer. 1<lb />
Yet, I'm willing to keep an open'<lb />

After reading your article today<lb />
regarding the new budget for ECU, I<lb />
wjpited to remind TEC and the stu-<lb />

time to look closely at our budget<lb />
anfl who is responsible for it. Yes, the<lb />
underpaid teachers of North Carolina<lb />
wijj get a 4.5 cost of living raise.<lb />
Thf Republican legislature originally<lb />

a compromise. I suggest that TEC<lb />

Henry Aldridge is known nation-<lb />

The night was perfect. The moon was a radiant or-<lb />

The Dave Matthews Band was at Walnut Creek Aug.30.<lb />
As the night started, my friends and 1 gathered<lb />
ground our VIP table. We took a look around, had a few<lb />
drinks, and before we knew it the lights were off and<lb />
Dave was on.<lb />
And, boy, was he on. It was the most relaxed set I've<lb />
tver seen him play, especially to such a huge audience.<lb />
The band opened up with the fifth track on their new<lb />
album, Crash, a song called "41 It let everyone get<lb />
into the groove without wasting too much energy. By<lb />
the time the song was over, the crowd was captivated.<lb />
Dave then chose "Lie in our Graves This got the crowd<lb />

After a few more songs, I decided to take a stroll<lb />

I noticed the most amazing thing. It wasn't the music. It<lb />
wasn't the vibe that could be felt, almost like a physical<lb />

No, it was the atmosphere. The moon was offset.<lb />

Okay, after two successful CDs and<lb />
a feature film, has anybody not heard of<lb />
the Jerky Boys? Just in case you haven't<lb />
these two guys (Johnny Brennan and<lb />
Kamal) make a living off of prank calls.<lb />
Basically, they call businesses and give<lb />
whoever answers the phone a really hard<lb />
time. Well, they're back with their third<lb />
CD, appropriately titled The Jerky Boys<lb />
3, and they're still the same old Jerky<lb />
Boys.<lb />
After the fame and notoriety that<lb />
came to them from their first two CDs,<lb />
the Jerky Boys found they had an un-<lb />
foreseen problem with their chosen pro-<lb />
fession - some people recognized their<lb />
voices. So in an effort to put a new spin<lb />
on things foi this record, they placed clas-<lb />
sified ads in local newspapers and pulled<lb />
their pranks on the neople calling them.<lb />
One such ad was for lawn equip-<lb />
ment. They apparently advertised a<lb />
chainsaw. a lawnmower, and a log-split-<lb />
ter for sale. The calls they got asking for<lb />
these items make up about six or seven<lb />
of the tracks on the CD.<lb />
The first one has the caller asking<lb />
where he can see the items for sale. The<lb />
answer he repeatedly gets from "Sol a<lb />
recurring voice used by the Jerky Boys,<lb />
is thai he can see the items in any hard-<lb />
ware store. Then when the guy asks<lb />
where "Sol's" items art, "Sol" replies, "In<lb />
my attic The guy takes one last chance<lb />
and asks where his attic is located, to<lb />
which "Sol" says, "At the top of my house<lb />
near the roof Another caller asks if he<lb />
can come get or see the items and is<lb />
promptly told. "Ummm no. Thank you<lb />
One of the outgoing calls is to a<lb />
party balloon supplier. "Frank Kizzo<lb />
another of the Jerky Boys' stock charac-<lb />
ters, asks for big balloons, "enough to<lb />
float my 11-year-old around the room<lb />
After explaining that they're planning to<lb />
use his son as sort of a pihata, "Frank"<lb />
even states that he'll probably take a<lb />
couple whacks at him, too. The scary<lb />
thing is that the salesman says that 200<lb />
balloons would probably do the trick and<lb />
goes right on with the sale.<lb />
Then, the Jerky Boys team up on<lb />
one call. While one Jerky calls a televi-<lb />
sion store about his television needing<lb />
repair, the other talks in the background<lb />
like a repairman. When the salesman says<lb />
not to touch anything on the back of the<lb />
television, the caller yells to the repair-<lb />
man, "He said to touch the back Then<lb />
all that is heard is a sound like an elec-<lb />
tric shock and screaming from the back-<lb />
ground. The caller then blames the sales-<lb />
man for the accident<lb />
Basically, The Jerky Boys never grew<lb />
out of their prank-calling phase of life<lb />
and are now rich because of it They are<lb />
funny, if this form of humor is your type<lb />
of thing. However. I really don't see pay-<lb />
ing full price for a CI) of prank calls. If<lb />
you feel like you have to have it buy it<lb />
used. Otherwise, just find a friend who<lb />
has it and is willing to share the fun.<lb />

Mocking the '70s is the hip<lb />
'90s thing to do, but for some rea-<lb />
son, the '90s generation is obses-<lb />
sively fascinated with the popular<lb />
culture of the '70s. Clothing fash-<lb />
ions are now '70s throwbacks; many<lb />
current "hot" musicians are water-<lb />
downed versions of the 70's music<lb />
scene (face it, Alanis Morissette<lb />
wishes she had the anger of Janis<lb />
Joplin); and Hollywood is con-<lb />
stantly transforming popular '70s<lb />
TV shows into feature films. Such<lb />
is the case with The Brady Bunch.<lb />
Unlike many, I'm fond of the<lb />
70s, and I'm probably the only per-<lb />
son who actually believes The<lb />
Brady Bunch Movie to be a bril-<lb />
liant cinematic achievement. The<lb />
Brady Bunch Movie magically cap-<lb />
tured the goofy, cornball fun of the<lb />
original show and blended the<lb />
show's bellbottomed innocence<lb />
with a biting, satiric '90s mental-<lb />
ity. The film proved to be more than<lb />
a lame remake of the show; it was<lb />
a film about cultural identity, cul-<lb />
tural shifts and generational gaps.<lb />
But most of all, it was fun and hi-<lb />
larious, especially for anyone famil-<lb />
iar with The Brady Bunch.<lb />
Since The Brady Bunch Movie<lb />
m<lb />
succeeded so wildly, it was only a<lb />
matter of time before the sequel<lb />
knocked on our theater doors. Now<lb />
I'm not of the popular belief that<lb />
all sequels are worthless or need-<lb />
less. Many great sequels have been<lb />
made. However. A Very Brady Se-<lb />
quel is not one of them.<lb />
The main problem with making<lb />
a sequel to Th" Brady Bunch Movie<lb />
is the simple fact that there is re-<lb />
ally nothing fresh to present. The<lb />
first film already satirized the<lb />
Bradys and their world view. Going<lb />
on that trip again only proves to<lb />
be blandly repetitive.<lb />
Still. A Very Brady Sequel does<lb />
have its moments for die-hard fans.<lb />

though I balk at the label, one<lb />
thing I have as an "old guy"<lb />

been through that freshman<lb />
year (hell, I've been through<lb />
that senior year, too). Better<lb />
yet, I went through it ten years<lb />
ago. And now I'm here to spread<lb />
some wise words on your brain<lb />
like peanut butter on a nice,<lb />

some of them will stick.<lb />
First of all, decide for your-<lb />

the fun parts of college like<lb />

money on stuff you don't really<lb />

we get a trippy reference to the '70s<lb />
cartoon show based on the Brady<lb />
kids.<lb />
Unfortunately, inspired mo-<lb />
ments such as these are not enough<lb />
to keep this Brady adventure from<lb />
getting lost in its own gags. The<lb />
script tries too hard to have a sa-<lb />
tiric edge. Whereas the original<lb />
film had a natural, punchy comic<lb />
timing, this film meanders from one<lb />
forced joke to another. How many<lb />
sexuai innuendoes can an audience<lb />
take before they simply get bored<lb />
with the joke?<lb />
Worse yet, the plot to this se-<lb />
quel is lame and misleading. All of<lb />
the ads for the film push the Ha-<lb />
waii angle. Ail the fans of the show<lb />
fondly remember the two-part Ha-<lb />
waii adventure the original Bradys<lb />
tackled. It's a wonderfully cheesy<lb />
story that could have easily been<lb />
transformed into a feature film. In-<lb />
stead of pulling from their original<lb />
source, the scriptwriters (there are<lb />
too many of them to name) and di-<lb />
rector Arlene Sanford try to be cre-<lb />
ative and conjure up this ridiculous<lb />
plot involving a man masquerading<lb />
as Mrs. Brady's first husband just<lb />
so he can steal an extremeiy valu-<lb />
able horse sculpture which the<lb />
Bradys own. This husband plot<lb />
takes up over half of the film's time,<lb />
and we don't even get to Hawaii<lb />
until it's almost over.<lb />
The movie does get a huge<lb />
push from its perfect cast, however.<lb />
The entire Brady cast fit their roles<lb />
to perfection (especially Gary Cole<lb />
as Mr. Brady). Watching these ac-<lb />
tors bounce around in their happy,<lb />
little Brady world is a joy. Too bad<lb />
the writers couldn't create a world<lb />
more suitable for the Brady men-<lb />
tality.<lb />
A Very Brady Sequel is only for<lb />

als which the Bradys represented<lb />
and those of us who take pride in<lb />
being Brady geeks. But even true<lb />
Brady fans may not want to rush<lb />
out to see their favorite TV family.<lb />
The sequel does not carry the fresh-<lb />
ness of the first film, nor does it<lb />
carry the unique appeal of the<lb />
show. Those of you who don't care<lb />
about the Bradys but found the<lb />
first film to be fun, skip out on this<lb />

How to get the<lb />
best results from<lb />
your dryer<lb />
Here are a few basic rules re-<lb />
garding the proper use of your<lb />
dryer.<lb />
First, sort dryer loads so that<lb />
they contain similar weight fabrics;<lb />
towels with towels, jeans with simi-<lb />
lar fabrics, and lightweight synthet-<lb />
ics and permanent press items to-<lb />
gether.<lb />
Separate lint producers (tow-<lb />
els) from lint catchers (permanent<lb />
press); separate dark colors from<lb />
light And leave items plenty of<lb />
room to tumble freely.<lb />
For best results, mix large and<lb />
small items. By themselves, large<lb />
items m& tend to ball and roll, while<lb />
small items may "ride" without tum-<lb />
bling. However, do not mix heavy-<lb />
weight fabrics with lightweight<lb />
ones.<lb />
Make sure that any stains were<lb />
removed during the wash cycle.<lb />
Follow these suggestions and<lb />
you will automatically prolong the<lb />
useful life of your wardrobe as well<lb />
as your pride in its appearance.<lb />

I was. I wanted to prove it to my-<lb />
self.<lb />
The problem didn't dawn on me<lb />
at first Slowly I began to realize that,<lb />
the hole I had dug for myself dur-<lb />
ing my first year and a half was too '<lb />
deep for me to crawl my way out of.<lb />
Not knowing what to do, I took<lb />
the advice of a friend and switched<lb />
schools, hoping that my GPA would<lb />
be erased in the process. Although<lb />
my record at the new university<lb />
where I spent my senior year was<lb />
pretty good, my former failures still<lb />
haunted me. They have now become<lb />
a permanent part of my history on<lb />
paper. Nothing can change that.<lb />
That hard, cold fact brings me<lb />
back to my original piece of advice<lb />
decide for yourself whether you<lb />
really want to be here for college.<lb />
The education part of it, that is. If<lb />
you're just here to party and have a<lb />
good time, then do yourself a favor<lb />
and take a year or two off to get it<lb />
out of your system. I wish I had.<lb />
There is no written rule that<lb />
says that you have to attend college<lb />
directly after you leave high school,<lb />
no matter what your parents or<lb />
friends might tell you. Your parents<lb />
and your friends won't have to live<lb />
with your record for the rest of their<lb />
lives, you will.<lb />
If you're not ready to accept the<lb />
responsibility of making the best<lb />
you can of your college education,<lb />
then get the hell out. You'll be bet-<lb />
ter off in the long run.<lb />

placed there just for this evening. The<lb />
band must have thought so, too, be-<lb />
cause they placed a picture of the<lb />
moon on the widescrt ns around the<lb />
area. Witnessing such a spectacle<lb />
almost made me want to give up my<lb />
ViP pass and watch the show from<lb />
tbi lawn.<lb />
As I went back to my seat, I took<lb />
the sidewalk around the crowd. The<lb />
sotg "Tripping Billies" screamed out<lb />
so loudly that it could be heard for<lb />
miles, and I was once again in awe of<lb />
what was happening. As 1 walked be-<lb />

and the grass of the hill, spinning<lb />
dancers surrounded me on all sides.<lb />
The energy took me away. How free<lb />
ttoe people were at this show. Every-<lb />
one was having a great time with no<lb />
worries.<lb />
x By the time 1 returned to my<lb />
seat, the band again had my full at-<lb />

the most unbelievable jams. As you<lb />
can guess, most of the night was<lb />
unprov. One song after another, the<lb />
band was tighter than ever. Boyd<lb />

The night was coming to a close.<lb />

himself. He played a little ditty, and<lb />
then bassist Stefan Lessard came out<lb />
to join him. Dave streaked into Bob<lb />

Watching these guys grow as musi-<lb />

this band. Everyone feels like they're<lb />
a part of it.<lb />
The most impressive thing 1 saw<lb />
all night was the way the band con-<lb />
trolled the momentum of the crowd.<lb />
It started off smooth. Midway<lb />
through the show, everyone in the<lb />
house was dancing. By the end of the<lb />
night, it was pure pandemonium. I'm<lb />
surprised Dave could hear what he<lb />
was saying.<lb />
After the smoke had cleared and<lb />
the roadies had taken to the stage, I<lb />
glanced around at the crowd, a crowd<lb />
that surpassed the one at the<lb />
H.O.R.D.E. festival which had taken<lb />
place just a couple of days before. I<lb />
was impressed with the diverse group<lb />
of people assembled there, all of<lb />
whom were blown away by the Dave<lb />

ECU knows<lb />

Although Henry did not sus-<lb />

coaches to disallow tackling to the<lb />
ground. Coches just cannot afford<lb />
to lose players.<lb />
Players are allowed to hit, but<lb />
they cannot tackle the players to<lb />
the ground. The players wrap up<lb />

This "stay up" rule helps the<lb />

Despite the hot, 90-degree<lb />
weather, ECU was more than ready<lb />

Tech came out looking very strong<lb />
both defensively and offensively, mak-<lb />

opening minutes.<lb />
The Hokies started by making<lb />
many attempts at scoring, but their<lb />

Staff Writer<lb />
Barton College won't forget the<lb />
hurting they received by the highly<lb />
versatile ECU Women's Soccer Team<lb />
Saturday afternoon.<lb />
The Lady Pirates came out of the<lb />
locker room ready to let everyone<lb />
know they meant business and at the<lb />
end of the day the 7-1 score showed<lb />
they had practiced hard in the off sea-<lb />
son. They started off the first half by<lb />
almost exclusively keeping the ball<lb />
near Barton's defending goal.<lb />
Four shot attempts where made<lb />
in short intervals by the ECU offense,<lb />
before Stacey Schott powered one in<lb />
on the 16th minute of play.<lb />
Barton's defense was exceptional<lb />
during the first moments of<lb />
the game, but their spirit<lb />
seemed to be broken after the<lb />
second goal was scored by<lb />
Stacie Cause on a penalty kick.<lb />
ECU's defense was espe-<lb />
cially held strong by Dana<lb />
Durbin and Kelly Karras who<lb />
were not afraid to get physical<lb />
with Barton's offensive and<lb />
mid-field players. They pro-<lb />
vided the team with a large<lb />
number of steals and down-<lb />
field possessions.<lb />
Barton's first half goal<lb />
keeper was well acquainted<lb />
sage.<lb />
Ten minutes before the half, se-<lb />
nior Chris Padgett blasted a 30-yard<lb />
rocket to bring the score to 2-0, ECU's<lb />
favor.<lb />
At the half, ECU knew their mis-<lb />
sion was to hold fast and hang tough<lb />
against the Tech offense. This would<lb />
be the time the Hokies would be ex-<lb />
pected to pull out their big guns to<lb />
put some points on the board.<lb />
At the beginning of second half<lb />
play, Virginia didn't seem to pump up<lb />
their offense as much as their defense.<lb />
A great deal of mid-field play was the<lb />
story for the second half. But when<lb />
the ball went anywhere, it was usu-<lb />
ally to Virginia's defending goal. But<lb />
their goal box defense was almost im-<lb />
penetrable.<lb />
On the 89th minute of play, the<lb />
Hokies made a not-so-graceful play<lb />
that resulted in their only goal of the<lb />
game.<lb />
ECU's Davis had a spectacular<lb />
game, with 15 saves - all of which<lb />
were executed with the flare of an all-<lb />

"This was a great win for the pro-<lb />

a direct result of a late first half as-<lb />
sault led by Karen Blake and Karras,<lb />
who both scored.<lb />
With a halftime score of 3-0, in<lb />
favor of ECU. Barton needed to<lb />
change their game plan. Barton Head<lb />
Coach Scott Ginn started off by<lb />
switching goal keepers and subbing<lb />
his bench.<lb />
But they couldn't beat the major<lb />
advantage ECU had over the Barton<lb />
squad. The ECU squad has a very deep<lb />
bench overflowing with talent and<lb />
Head Coach Neil Roberts knew how<lb />
to use it<lb />

more intense action in the second half<lb />
and it showed with the way they<lb />
played, ready to attack the goal.<lb />
Karras christened the new goal with<lb />
a powerful kick to the upper right<lb />
corner, upping ECU's lead to 4-0.<lb />
Then the game briefly took an<lb />
unfortunate turn when a Barton pen-<lb />
alty kick turned into their first point.<lb />
This didn't discourage the ECU squad<lb />
and they showed it when Blake drove<lb />
the field to make her second goal of<lb />
the day.<lb />
Barton's second half goal keeper<lb />
did a bit better than the other, but<lb />
ECU was too pumped up and ready<lb />
to score.<lb />
Jennifer Reiley "nade an explosive<lb />
play when she slide-kicked the ball<lb />
after it had been unsuccessfully recov-<lb />
ered by the Barton goalie.<lb />
In yet another unbelievable play,<lb />
Blake ran a half-field sprint to score<lb />
her third, and final goal for the day.<lb />
leaving the final score. ECU 7 <lb />
Barton 1.<lb />
After the game, Roberts said he<lb />
was very impressed with this team.<lb />
"They have come out and set a<lb />

very pleased with the reserves. The<lb />

New rule changes outcome<lb />
Overtime rule now<lb />
used in college<lb />
football games<lb />
Dill Dillard<lb />
Assistant Sports Editor<lb />
Rules, rules and more rules. It<lb />
seems like every time you turn<lb />
around, college football changes the<lb />
rules in some form or fashion. Well<lb />
folks, they've done it again, but this<lb />
time it's a change most everybody<lb />
likes.<lb />
The officials of the NCAA ad-<lb />
justed their football rule book to fit<lb />
an overtime rule for Division I foot-<lb />
ball play.<lb />
As everybody knows, the ugliest<lb />
three letter word in a sports fans vo-<lb />
cabulary is tie. The new rule change<lb />
will insure that there will be a win-<lb />
ner if there is a tie at the end of regu-<lb />
lation which pleases most college<lb />
football fans. This rule nixes compro-<lb />
mising situations such as at the end<lb />
of the season. Two teams vying for a<lb />
bowl trip, winner goes bowling, loser<lb />
stays at home, and both teams New<lb />
Year's are ruined due to a tie. Oh no,<lb />
say good-bye to that.<lb />
No doubt about it, there will be<lb />
a serious love affair between the new<lb />
OT rule and the fans, not to mention<lb />
the television networks. Despite this<lb />
match made in football heaven, the<lb />
making or breaking of the new rule<lb />
will depend on the feelings of the<lb />
masters of the X's and O's.<lb />
Fans will love the fact that they<lb />
will fill a stadium and will be guar-<lb />
anteed that their will be a winner<lb />
when they leave. The coaches on the<lb />
other hand, have mixed emotions<lb />
about the new change. One may<lb />
think that it<lb />
would change<lb />
the mentality<lb />
of most<lb />
coaches to a<lb />
more conser-<lb />
vative ap-<lb />
proach to-<lb />
wards the end<lb />
of the game,<lb />
but for others<lb />
it doesn't<lb />
change a<lb />
thing.<lb />
"We'll ap-<lb />
proach the<lb />
end of the<lb />
game just like<lb />
we always have Head Coach Steve<lb />
Logan said. "If we're on the three<lb />
with a chance to end it, I'll be<lb />
doggone if I'm going to move it back<lb />
out to the 20 (yard line) in overtime,<lb />
we're going to go for the win<lb />
For those who are unfamiliar<lb />
with the overtime rule, it is totally<lb />
different from pro football's sudden<lb />
death over time where the team that<lb />
strikes first wins. The rule itself al-<lb />
lows both teams to answer back from<lb />
the other's score and whoever is<lb />
ahead at the end of the overtime pe-<lb />
riod wins the ballgame.<lb />
"I feel the rule is more fair than<lb />
the pro sudden death rule Logan<lb />
said, "I mean, whoever wins the toss<lb />
has a huge advantage and has the<lb />
opportunity to end it on the first<lb />
Each team will have<lb />
equal time of possession.<lb />
It will not be a<lb />
sudden death<lb />
playoff like in<lb />
professional<lb />
football.<lb />
drive of the period<lb />
Will this change the complexion<lb />
of ECU footbal'? With Logan's coach-<lb />
ing style, that's doubtful, but it'll<lb />
make a few games this season a bit<lb />
more interesting to watch.<lb />
"I'm sorry, I'd rather win it or<lb />
lose it and get the headache over<lb />
with, but it should be an interesting<lb />
year with the new rule Logan said.<lb /><pb facs="00058640_tn_0010" /><lb />

JKing and Queen of the Halls.<lb />
The festivities take place this<lb />
jThursday, September 5 from 4-6<lb />
r,3.m. on College Hill. This event is<lb />
Composed of a variety of fun and<lb />
xciting activities and the famous<lb />
crowns and scepter.<lb />
King and Queen of the Halls is<lb />
a battle between every residence<lb />
hall to become King, Queen or<lb />
Crown Jewels of the halls. King and<lb />
Queen of the Halls started in 1988<lb />
when it was called King and Queen<lb />
of the Hill.<lb />
When word got out of how<lb />
much fun it was, Central and West<lb />
Campus wanted to participate. In<lb />
1989, every residence hall received<lb />
the opportunity to battle it out to<lb />
become King or Queen in, "King<lb />
and Queen of the Halls Ironically,<lb />
in 1989 when the title changed and<lb />
every residence hall competed, only<lb />
one hall on College Hill become roy-<lb />
alty.<lb />
Garrett Hall was the first King<lb />
and Belk Hall won Queen of the<lb />
halls. For six consecutive years<lb />
Garrett's reign continued until last<lb />
year when Scott Hall dethroned<lb />
Garrett and became King of the<lb />
halls.<lb />
Winner's among the women's<lb />
residence halls vary from year to<lb />
year. In the past, it has been a close<lb />
battle between Belk, Fleming,<lb />
Greene and Tyler. In the coed halls,<lb />
the halls who won Crowned Jewels<lb />
were Fleming in 1992 and 1993,<lb />
Jones in 1994 and Aycock last year<lb />
in 1995.<lb />
To determine the best resi-<lb />
dence hall of them all, this year's<lb />
scoring is as follows:<lb />
The first scoring criteria is<lb />
the percentage of residents in at-<lb />
tendance from each residence hall.<lb />
The men's, women's and coed resi-<lb />
dence hall which have the highest<lb />
percentage of participants as deter-<lb />
mined by sign-up sheets at the ac-<lb />
tivity site (based on a percentage<lb />
of residents in their respective<lb />
halls) will receive points based on<lb />
their ranking8 0 0 f i r s t,<lb />
700second place, 600third place,<lb />
500fourth place, 400fifth place,<lb />
300sixth place, etc)<lb />
The second criteria is the<lb />
number of points accumulated per<lb />
residence hall. Points will be<lb />
awarded to each participant when<lb />
they successfully complete each<lb />
gameactivity. The residence hall<lb />
in each category which collect the<lb />
most points will be awarded the cor-<lb />
responding point values800-first<lb />
place, 700second place, etc)<lb />
The third criteria is a tug of<lb />
war. The top two men's and<lb />
women's residence halls who have<lb />
the highest scores will compete in<lb />
