Children of baby boomers are ex-<lb />

two to three percent annually at uni-<lb />

UNC system president C. D. Spangler.<lb />
"We know where these children<lb />
are, they are in the third or fourth<lb />
grade, and the universities are prepar-<lb />

can benefit from higher education<lb />

and a new library is in the works said<lb />
Spangler. "With the addition of the<lb />
new rec center, they will have the fa-<lb />

Spangler said that while the ma-<lb />

More than a year after the Shared Visions campaign<lb />
reached its goal of $50 million, the campaign continues<lb />
to thrive.<lb />
Chancellor Richard Eakin announced on March 22<lb />
that the campaign exceeded its original goal by $15.5<lb />
million.<lb />
"Five years ago our consultants projected we could<lb />
raise between $35 million and $40 million Robert A.<lb />
Ward, co-chairman of the fundraising campaign said. "As<lb />
our first major campaign, even many of our friends<lb />
thought that $50 million was just too aggressive. Once<lb />
again, the East Carolina family rose to the challenge<lb />
The campaign began in 1990 to raise funds to en-<lb />

30 percent one year later at the close of the campaign.<lb />
"We read each day about the inequities of school fund-<lb />

is a tribute to our institution, our leadership, our alumni,<lb />
the 700 volunteers who helped identify and solicit gifts,<lb />
and the 12.000 individual donors whose gifts made the<lb />
project successful <lb />
Ward said that friends and alumni contributed the<lb />
most to the campaign, donating $17 million, or 52 per-<lb />
cent. Corporations and businesses contributed $12.7 mil-<lb />

A Raleigh man was severely beaten, a female Duke student was almost<lb />

The Duke students said that University Police refused to help the woman<lb />

THe students asked for an investigation into the events, as well as<lb />
identification and suspension of the officers involved.<lb />
Gold said that altercations occurred when a large group was not admit-<lb />

students given this award were three<lb />
of only fifteen selected nationwide.<lb />
The conference was held March<lb />
13-16 in Corpus Christi, Texas and in-<lb />
cluded over 300 SAM members. Vari-<lb />
ous sessions, seminars and competi-<lb />
tions were conducted. The students<lb />
were given the opportunity to network<lb />
with other students and gain experi-<lb />
ence in their field.<lb />
The case analysis competition<lb />
tested the students' skills in solving<lb />
business problems. The students com-<lb />
peted in teams of three and were sent<lb />
the case analysis problem approxi-<lb />
mately two weeks before the confer-<lb />
ence. They were not allowed help from<lb />
faculty members or any outside<lb />
sources, only the knowledge and skills<lb />
they have acquired over their years of<lb />
study.<lb />
"It's a great exercise faculty ad-<lb />
visor Stephen Childers said. "This type<lb />
of competition gives you a chance to<lb />
take everything you've learned and<lb />
apply it to a real world problem<lb />
ECU took six students to this con-<lb />
ference, the most they have ever taken<lb />
in one year, and because of the size of<lb />
the group were able to compete in both<lb />
the undergraduate and open divisions<lb />
in the case analysis competition.<lb />
The schools participating in the<lb />
conference were also judged and<lb />
ranked for the quality of their campus<lb />
business clubs. ECU placed third in this<lb />
competition, which was based on the<lb />
entire year's performance.such as<lb />
tours, speakers, and community ser-<lb />
vice.<lb />
Childers commented on the ECU<lb />
business club's community service in-<lb />
volvement<lb />
"We did some work with a home-<lb />
less shelter Childers said. "We gave a<lb />
couple hundred dollars worth to the<lb />
Salvation Army in clothes and house-<lb />
hold items<lb />
In order to be considered for the<lb />
award, the three winning students had<lb />
to first be nominated by their advisor.<lb />
Three is the maximum number a single<lb />
school is allowed to nominate, Childers<lb />
added.<lb />
All three of ECU's nominations<lb />
won at the Regional level and contin-<lb />
ued on to the National level, where all<lb />
three again won honors.<lb />
Meleah Barnhill was also elected<lb />
by her student peers at the conference<lb />
to serve on the International Execu-<lb />
tive Board. As a student member of this<lb />
board she will go to approximately four<lb />
meetings a year and represent student<lb />
interests.<lb />
Childers said no ECU student has<lb />

"Our View"<lb />

a <lb />
Editor's Note: Outside of the doors of The East Carolinian<lb />
(TEC), the "masthead" is the list of staff members on the top<lb />
right side of this page. For lack of a better word, we use the<lb />
terms "Our View"and masthead" interchangably.<lb />
Have you wondered how we get the ideas that are expressed<lb />
in "Our View?" Well, wonder no longer, we are here to explain.<lb />
Each week all the editors and assistant editors in our re-<lb />
spected sections sit down and have our editorial board meet-<lb />
ing. Sometimes the meetings take hours, even days. OK, actu-<lb />
ally it only takes about 10 minutes to come up with topics, but<lb />
sometimes it seems like hours. We brainstorm topics that are<lb />
relative to the news of the week. It may be campus news, com-<lb />
munity news, world news and sometimes even sports gets thrown<lb />
in.<lb />
We try to write on subjects that not only interest us, but<lb />
you too. We don't want to write on dead-beat subjects. Some-<lb />
thing no one will want to read is useless and we know you<lb />
deserve the highest quality we at TEC can offer.<lb />
Everybody votes on two topics they like and the top two<lb />
vote getters on the list are the mastheads for the upcoming<lb />
weeks. Everyone is assigned to write the "Our View" each week,<lb />
so everybody gets a turn to write on subjects, that sometimes,<lb />
they really don't have a strong opinion about.<lb />
Thai a where the rest of staff comes into play. Because not<lb />
everybody thinks alike, after we choose our two topics, every-<lb />
one in the meeting throws out ideas on why they like the topic,<lb />
hate it agree with it or disagree. The writer for that masthead<lb />
jots down the ideas and incorporates those views into the col-<lb />
umn.<lb />
This makes it easier for whoever is summoned to write the<lb />
masthead. They can put their own input into the article as well<lb />
as six other people's ideas.<lb />
We try to express views that will generate the reader's in-<lb />
terests. We often get feedback on the mastheads and that is<lb />
what we are trying to do: codger up some interest and get people<lb />
thinking about certain topics.<lb />
Some may think it is a tedious process and sometimes it is.<lb />
But the whole reason for titling the section "Our View" is to let<lb />
the readers know what we are thinking. What you read isn't<lb />
just the opinion of one writer, it is a combination of all of us at<lb />
TEC.<lb />
So the next time your friend turns to you and says that<lb />
they can't believe that whoever wrote the "Our View" believes<lb />
what they do, you can set them straight and let them know that<lb />
the opinion is not just of one person, but of several.<lb />
We ail collaborate to make "Our View" as unique as our-<lb />
selves and we put them into one big melting pot to create many<lb />
diverse opinions. And when the boiling pot of opinions are fin-<lb />
ished brewing, that's when you have what we call "Our View<lb />
Letters to the Editor<lb />
N.C. Race: No room for moderates<lb />
- To the Editor:<lb />
The two party system has de-<lb />
prived North Carolina voters of any<lb />
jreal choices in the 1996 U.S. Sen-<lb />
ate face. Both parties have nomi-<lb />
fiJd candidates that represent the<lb />
extremes of their respective parties.<lb />
Republicans re-nominated<lb />
Jesse Helms, a card-carrying mem-<lb />
ber and leader of the far right move-<lb />
ment. Senator Helms has a long<lb />
record of regressive voting on edu-<lb />
cation, the environment and a long<lb />
string of other issues. The fact he<lb />
is a professional politician with 24<lb />
years under his belt in Washington<lb />
only worsens his standing.<lb />
The democrats nominated a<lb />
candidate that also represents the<lb />
extremes of their party. Harvey<lb />
Cantt opposes capital punishment,<lb />
favors racial quotas and has already<lb />
been rejected once by North Caro-<lb />
lina voters. Cantt cemented his left-<lb />
wing credentials by calling his op-<lb />

It is unfortunate two career<lb />
politicians that are willing to use<lb />
race to their advantage are the only<lb />
options in this Senate race. Moder-<lb />

Now<lb />
Summer school rocks<lb />
Welcome to the Jungle. Oh no,<lb />
I think that I have gone off of the<lb />
deep end. I have reached the point<lb />
of no return in my writing career.<lb />
Assuming this article gets printed I<lb />
have an actual printed record of<lb />
having used a quote from a Guns<lb />
and Roses song to introduce an ar-<lb />
ticle. I think this shows my madness.<lb />
Yes, there is a point.<lb />
I think that I am going mad be-<lb />
cause I chose to be in school for an<lb />
optional three months. This may<lb />
sound scary but you could be in the<lb />
same danger that I am in. You could<lb />
have this problem too, if you are<lb />
here of your own accord. Here's a<lb />
few things that can set off a person<lb />
with the madness. Read at your own<lb />
risk.<lb />
I chose to not be able to find<lb />
my way around a campus that I have<lb />
spent three years on. Being in sum-<lb />
mer school means a lot of things,<lb />
but this summer it means that on<lb />
anv given morning your favorite<lb />
area of campus could be fenced off<lb />
and closed from entry. This then<lb />
allows me to get to school everyday<lb />
with the anticipation of a lab rat<lb />
waiting to get his chance at the<lb />
maze. If you have class in the Gen-<lb />
eral Classroom building and you<lb />
need to use the ATM machine be-<lb />
fore you go to the food mobile or<lb />
whatever it is that they have wittily<lb />
called the " Wright Re-place then<lb />
strap on those running shoes and<lb />
put on a pack because it is almost<lb />
impossible to find your way.<lb />
For me, this is a summer of hav-<lb />
ing too,much homework for one<lb />
class. In my class we are doing at<lb />
Patrick Ware<lb />
Opinion Columnist<lb />
Now I can get<lb />
out of class and<lb />
head to the<lb />
beach and be<lb />
back for Punky<lb />
Brewster at 9<lb />
p.m.<lb />
least 15 pages of wriaen work a<lb />
night. Hello? What are they think-<lb />
ing? I would like to say that I love<lb />
my professor.<lb />
Being in summer school means<lb />
that you most likely have to find a<lb />
job. If you have ever lived in this<lb />
booming metropolis during the sum-<lb />
mer or even if this is your first sum-<lb />
mer here you will know that if you<lb />
don't get the coolest job in the world<lb />
befcre summer starts then you ei-<lb />
ther become poor because you can-<lb />
not find a job. or if you are lucky<lb />
enough to find one. it will most<lb />
likely stink.<lb />
I guess I need to figure out what<lb />
stage of childhood I missed while<lb />
daydreaming that taught people that<lb />
summer was supposed to be a work-<lb />
ing and stressing time of the year.<lb />
There is much to do except enjoy<lb />
the sunshine. Which brings me to<lb />
the lighter side and possibly the an-<lb />
tidote to the disease that caused me<lb />
to begin the later stages in my adult-<lb />
hood when I refer to bands long<lb />
stricken from the playlist of any ra-<lb />
dio station.<lb />
Greenville in the summer is hot.<lb />
You can spend your tree time, as-<lb />
suming that you can find some, bak-<lb />
ing in the sunshine. It is so nice also<lb />
to be so close to the beach. I grew<lb />
up more than five hours from the<lb />
coast so a beach trip was out of the<lb />
question except on the family vaca-<lb />
tion in late summer one week a year.<lb />
Now I can get out of class and head<lb />
to the beach and be back for Punky<lb />
Brewster at 9 p.m.<lb />
There I go again.<lb />
Summer is such a better time<lb />
to get to know people or to meet<lb />
them than fall or spring semesters.<lb />
This is getting a little corny. Let me<lb />
bring us back to reality.<lb />
It is good to meet people but<lb />
it's even better to spend time with<lb />
them if you have something silly to<lb />
complain about like the fences on<lb />
campus, the food or the homework.<lb />
I have convinced myself, which I<lb />
have become quite good at doing,<lb />
that the parts of life especially here<lb />
in wonder world that is ECU. that<lb />
are bad just give us something to<lb />
whine about.<lb />
As an opinion columnist. I am<lb />
so very thankful for any bone-head<lb />
moves by anyone in the public eye<lb />
or any part of college life that is silly<lb />
and give me something to write<lb />
about.<lb />
Welcome to Summer school.<lb />
May your days be filled with sun-<lb />
shine and your nights with good<lb />
sleep. I care about you guys. I love<lb />
you man. See ya next week.<lb />

Is it just me, or does the cam-<lb />

The ECU Playhouse has always<lb />

this year is no exception. Accord-<lb />

"to have a musical, a comedy, and<lb />
another play, one that has received<lb />

This year they've lined up Car-<lb />

Dyin Who's Got the Will? from<lb />
July 2-6 and Sleuth from July 16-<lb />

If you're craving a bit of culture<lb />
or just a break from your hectic<lb />
schedule, the Florida Printmakers<lb />

Exhibition, to be held in the<lb />
Wellington B. Gray Art Gallery,<lb />
might be just the thing for you. The<lb />
exhibition will run from July 15-<lb />
Sept. 7 and is free-of-charge to the<lb />
public.<lb />
The works of 48 printmakers<lb />
will be presented at this exhibition.<lb />
Two of the printmakers. Michael W.<lb />
Ehlbeck and Michael Voors, are cur-<lb />
rently members of the East Carolina<lb />
School of Art faculty.<lb />
Also, Tom Hammond, professor<lb />
of art and printmaking at the Uni-<lb />
versity of Georgia and an alumnus<lb />
of the East Carolina School of Art,<lb />
will be represented in the exhibition.<lb />
Hammond will give a lecture about<lb />
printmaking on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. in<lb />
Speight Auditorium.<lb />
This is the first year that this<lb />
particular exhibition will be held on<lb />
East Carolina's campus. According<lb />
to Dr. Gil Leebrick, director of Gray<lb />
Art Gallery, the purpose of the ex-<lb />
hibit, and the art gallery in general,<lb />
is "to educate students and to in-<lb />
form the faculty of what is going on<lb />
in art really to engage the Greater<lb />
Greenville community<lb />
Since the gallery is primarily a<lb />
teaching facility, the exhibition was<lb />
chosen to complement the curricu-<lb />
lum of the art department. Exhibits<lb />
are chosen so that every medium is<lb />
covered in a 2-3 year cycle. This ex-<lb />
hibit will, of course, represent the<lb />
print medium.<lb />
Examples of prints range from,<lb />
among others, intaglio (the incision<lb />
of lines that will hold ink into a<lb />
metal plate) and lithography (which<lb />
literally means "stone writing") to<lb />
relief (the exact opposite of intaglio<lb />
- in relief, the raised surface is<lb />
inked).<lb />

Senior Writer<lb />
Hollywood is always looking for<lb />
the next big marketable thing. A few<lb />
years ago, it was dinosaurs. Last year,<lb />
a man dressed as a bat made a come-<lb />
back. This year, nature rules at the<lb />
box office. As strange as it may seem,<lb />
tornadoes are the "in" thing at the,<lb />
moment, and Warner Brothers' new<lb />
film Twister taps into this current<lb />
phenomena.<lb />
Critics across the nation are al-<lb />
ready praising the film for its special<lb />
effects wiz-<lb />
ardry. The<lb />
special ef-<lb />
fects team for<lb />
Twister per-<lb />
f o r m<lb />
miracles with<lb />
their com-<lb />
puter tech-<lb />
nology. The<lb />
tornadoes,<lb />
If you're going to<lb />
bother with a<lb />
story at all, why<lb />
not put a little<lb />
effort into it?<lb />
which are the<lb />
selling point of this film, don't disap-<lb />
point. These twisters look amazingly<lb />
realistic as they destroy barns, hurl<lb />
live cows around, and throw transfer<lb />
trucks as if they were weightless.<lb />
While these critics praise the spe-<lb />
cial effects in Twister, they also are<lb />
quick to point out that the story is<lb />
weak, as are the characters. However,<lb />
these same critics forgive the filmmak-<lb />
ers because what really matters are<lb />
the tornadoes. Let me stray fipm the<lb />
pack for a minute. I admit that the<lb />
tornadoes are the focus of Twister, as<lb />
were the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park,<lb />
but I still don't understand why we<lb />
have to sacrifice an engaging story<lb />
and characters that are somewhat<lb />
complex in exchange for great effects.<lb />
If you're going to bother with a story<lb />
at all, then why not put a little effort<lb />
into it instead of following the typical<lb />
Hollywood formula?<lb />
Without going into any detail, the<lb />
basic premise of the story involves a<lb />
separated couple, Bill and Jo Harding<lb />
(played by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt<lb />
respectively), who find themselves<lb />
thrown back together when a record<lb />
outbreak of tornadoes occurs in Okla-<lb />
homa. As this couple, along with their<lb />
team of scientist companions, chase<lb />
one tornado after another with a sci-<lb />
entific invention they created to ana-<lb />
lyze and study torna-<lb />
does, we do witness<lb />
attempts at character<lb />
and story develop-<lb />
ment, but these at-<lb />
tempts prove to be<lb />
frail and even cliched.<lb />
Screenwriters<lb />
Michael Crichton and<lb />
Anne-Marie Martin do<lb />
their best to provide<lb />
characters with inter-<lb />
nal motivations, haunted obsessions<lb />
and human qualities, but the end re-<lb />
sult is more of a predictable paint-by-<lb />
numbers script than a surprisingly com-<lb />
pelling story. Not only that, Crichton<lb />
and Martin even resort to throwing in<lb />
such tired concepts as a sleazy corpo-<lb />
rate antagonist who, of course, is not<lb />
as skilled at chasing tornadoes as our<lb />
instinctive heroes.<lb />
The only really interesting element<lb />
in the story's concept is how the tor-<lb />
:, ,W'<lb />
nadoes themselves are given a lifelike<lb />
quality. The script plays around with<lb />
the notion that tornadoes are their own<lb />
entities, even to the point that these<lb />
tornadoes growl like some unnatural<lb />
beast But even this idea is not origi-<lb />
nal. Ron Howard did the same thing<lb />
with fire when he made Backdraft.<lb />
Still, Twister does deliver on the<lb />
action, and that's what really matters<lb />
here. Director Jan De Bont is perfect<lb />
for the job, especially since he already<lb />
proved he could make the mundane<lb />
fun with his previous hit, Speed. De<lb />
Bont's camera constantly moves in an<lb />
action sequence, creating a dizzying<lb />
sensation without being distracting.<lb />
Visually, De Bont does capture some<lb />
memorable moments. A night sequence<lb />
in which a huge tornado attacks a<lb />
drive-in theater is particularly fright-<lb />
ening.<lb />
De Bont is also a master at plac-<lb />
ing his heroes in dangerous situations.<lb />
I have to admire any film that has our<lb />
protagonists run into a barn for shel-<lb />
ter from a tornado only to discover that<lb />
the barn is filled with blades, pitch-<lb />
forks, and shovels. Moments like this<lb />
make this ride an enjoyable one.<lb />
Twister is one of those films that<lb />
has many inexcusable faults, but it is<lb />
also a film I can't totally dislike because<lb />
the elements that work really work<lb />
jwelLWhen the action startstfce film's<lb />
flaws fade. However, whenever the film<lb />
takes a pit stop, the flaws are as un-<lb />
mistakable as any tornado.<lb />
My advice to everyone, though, is<lb />
to see Twister on the big screen, in a<lb />
theater with a digital sound system if<lb />
possible. I don't see this flick as trans-<lb />
lating to video effectively at all.<lb />
On a scale of one to 10, Twister<lb />
rates a six (an eight if you see it in a<lb />
really nice theater).<lb />
Evan and Jaron<lb />
Band<lb />
Not from<lb />
Concentrate<lb />
Derek T. Hall<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
From the depths of Atlanta<lb />
they came, with mirror images of<lb />
themselves to count on and an ar-<lb />
ray of new tunes. Evan and Jaron<lb />
are working it out! Working out the<lb />
club scene, that is. In only two<lb />
years, these identical twin brothers<lb />
have released Live at KaLo's Cof-<lb />
fee House, a self-published album,<lb />
and Not from Concentrate, their<lb />
debut studio CD.<lb />
And this seven-song EP is defi-<lb />
nitely an impressive debut. It opens<lb />
up with a tune called "Nature Co<lb />
a song that lists the necessary in-<lb />
gredients for human survival, one<lb />
of them being music, of course.<lb />
The most impressive song on<lb />
the disc is called "How Many<lb />
Times This tune allows Evan to<lb />
venture off into a world of his own<lb />
by letting loose on his Gibson, an<lb />
electric, custom-made guitar that is<lb />
perhaps one of a few in existence.<lb />
An electric sound is what the<lb />
band needs to put them over the<lb />
top. Not from Concentrate is defi-<lb />
nitely up beat. It shows you a to-<lb />
tally different side to these broth-<lb />
ers. Before, they were playing<lb />
acoustics in a coffee shop and re-<lb />
lied on nothing but themselves.<lb />
After selling over 8,000 copies of<lb />
Live at KaLo's Coffee House, they<lb />
decided to get a band and record<lb />
Not from Concentrate.<lb />
Don't get lured into thinking<lb />
that this twin duo is a repeat of the<lb />
Nelson boys or any other demented<lb />
twins that smiled for the cameras.<lb />
This band has respect, something<lb />
that most twin rockers can never<lb />
acquire.<lb />
The music on this disc is very<lb />
pop. Although the sound works, it<lb />
has been done before. Evan and<lb />
Jaron won't win many awards for<lb />
originality, but their poppy rhythms<lb />
do catch your attention. I think<lb />
that's what attracts people to this<lb />
band: their simplistic style makes<lb />
you wonder what you're listening<lb />
to, while you're enjoying it.<lb />
I've seen these guys play for a<lb />
packed crowd and an empty one.<lb />
Their best quality as a band is their<lb />
ability to hold the intensity of a<lb />
large packed room and also to ad-<lb />
just and play like they never have<lb />
before to an empty hall.<lb />
When all is said and done and<lb />
the disc player is dead silent, you'll<lb />
probably find yourself glad you<lb />
pushed that tepeafbuttonBe care-<lb />
ful though; playing it too much is<lb />
addictive.<lb />
Not from Concentrate suits the<lb />
band well as a title. It's not the or-<lb />
dinary dried-up crap you hear on<lb />
the airwaves. It's the real thing,<lb />
picked fresh like a Georgia peach<lb />
for your listening pleasure.<lb />
Be on the lookout for Evan and<lb />
Jaron at the Attic on May 30th. It's<lb />
a show that you don't want to miss.<lb />
Bucket<lb />

"I remember, Daddy would<lb />

to take us home. He said he'd<lb />
bring us back when he found a<lb />

on im you know it was, Mark. It<lb />
had to be. So he married Miss<lb />
Lizzie in August, and we went<lb />
back. Mama died in February, I<lb />
think. She was 28<lb />
I sat in the uncomfortable<lb />
chair at the nursing home, my jaw<lb />
hanging open in stunned disbe-<lb />
lief at the story that had just<lb />
spilled forth from my<lb />
grandmother's lips. In just one<lb />
minute, sandwiched unexpectedly<lb />
between complaints about grow-<lb />
ing old and the sad habits of her<lb />
next door neighbor, my father's<lb />
mother had set off a bomb in my<lb />
brain.<lb />
I had never heard anything<lb />
about my great-grandmother. In<lb />
the multitude of stories that my<lb />
family has told about the numer-<lb />
ous outrageous characters that<lb />
preceded me onto this Earth, she<lb />
had never been mentioned even<lb />
once. I guess she died so young<lb />
that she didn't have the chance<lb />
to collect enough eccentricities<lb />
for there to be any stories. But<lb />
that little snippet of my family's<lb />
history, that sliver of traumatic<lb />
time, filled in so many gaps in the<lb />
other stories.<lb />
For one thing, I now knew<lb />
who Miss Lizzie was. I had gath-<lb />
ered that she had helped raise my<lb />
grandmother, but I never guessed<lb />
she became part of the family.<lb />
The story also snapped an<lb />
important piece into place right<lb />
at the center of the enigmatic<lb />
puzzle that was my great-grand-<lb />
father, who was, near as 1 can tell,<lb />
a crusty, disagreeable old farmer<lb />
who ate mayonnaise sandwiches<lb />
every day for lunch and never had<lb />
an ounce of praise for anybody.<lb />
I've never been able to figure out<lb />
what made him that way, nor why<lb />
everybody loved him so much.<lb />
Now I think I've got some insight<lb />
into that first mystery (though I'm<lb />
still perplexed by the second one).<lb />
But all that history opening<lb />
up beneath me wasn't what<lb />
stunned me so much.<lb />
No, I was sitting there allow-<lb />
ing the flies free access to my ton-<lb />
sils because I knew that, in just a<lb />
few short months, 1 would be 28.<lb />
By the time she was my age, my<lb />
great-grandmother had married,<lb />
built a farm with her husband,<lb />
given birth to three children, and<lb />
died. Some would say that's a<lb />
pretty full life.<lb />
This got me thinking: what<lb />
have I done with my 28 years?<lb />
Well. I've come really close to fin-<lb />

Peppers cure pain<lb />
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - When<lb />
burning pain lingers months after<lb />
surgery, doctors say there is a red-hot<lb />
cure: chili peppers.<lb />
In a study, an ointment made with<lb />
capsaicin (cap-SAY-uh-sin). the stuff<lb />
that makes chili peppers hot, brought<lb />
relief to patients with tender surgical<lb />
scars, apparently b short-circuiting<lb />
the pain.<lb />
Patients undergoing major can-<lb />
cer surgery, such as mastectomies or<lb />
lung operations, are sometimes beset<lb />
by sharp, burning pain in their surgi-<lb />
cal scars that lasts for months, even<lb />
years. Sometimes the misery is so bad<lb />
that sufferers cannot even stand the<lb />
weight of clothing on their scar, even<lb />
though it is fully healed.<lb />
The condition, seen in about five<lb />
percent or fewer of all cases, results<lb />
from damage to the nerves during<lb />
surgery. Ordinary painkillers don't<lb />
work, and the standard treatment is<lb />
antidepressant drugs.<lb />
However, these powerful drugs<lb />
have side effects. So in search of a<lb />
better alternative, doctors tested a<lb />
cream made with capsaicin on 99 pa-<lb />
tients who typically had suffered pain-<lb />
ful surgical scars for at least six<lb />
months.<lb />
Patients preferred capsaicin over<lb />
a dummy cream by 3-to-l.<lb />
"The therapy clearly worked<lb />
said Dr. Charles L. Loprinzi, head of<lb />
medical oncology at the Mayo Clinic.<lb />
He released his data Monday at the<lb />
annual meeting of the American So-<lb />
ciety for Clinical Oncology.<lb />
The only side effects were red-<lb />
ness, burning and an occasional<lb />
cough when the patient caught a whiff<lb />
of the ointment.<lb />
Capsaicin is believed to work by<lb />
blocking substance P, a natural chemi-<lb />
cal that carries pain impulses between<lb />
nerve cells. That same blocking effect<lb />
may explain why people who eat hot<lb />
peppers all the time develop a toler-<lb />
ance to the burn.<lb />
Dr. Alan Lyss of Missouri Baptist<lb />
Medical Center in St. Louis called it<lb />
"a creative, new and very inexpensive<lb />
way to take care of some kinds of can-<lb />
cer pain<lb />
Capsaicin is sold in drug stores<lb />
without a prescription, and a tube that<lb />
lasts a month costs about $16.<lb />
It is commonly marketed for re-<lb />
lieving shingles, but Loprinzi said his<lb />
study, financed by the National Can-<lb />
cer Institute,<lb />
is the first to<lb />
look at its use<lb />
in post-surgi-<lb />
cal pain.<lb />
In the<lb />
study, the pa-<lb />
tients were randomly assigned to cap-<lb />
saicin cream or the look-alike placebo<lb />
four times a day for eight-week inter-<lb />
vals. Until the study was over, no one<lb />
knew which was which.<lb />
Patients kept score of their pain.<lb />
It went down 53 percent while using<lb />
capsaicin but only 17 percent while<lb />
on the placebo. About 10 percent said<lb />
their pain disappeared completely.<lb />
The doctors followed the patients<lb />
for two months after they stopped<lb />
using capsaicin and found that the<lb />
pain did not come back. A longer fol-<lb />
low-up will be necessary to see if the<lb />
treatment relieves the pain perma-<lb />
nently.<lb />
Three strengths of capsaicin<lb />
cream are commonly available in phar-<lb />
macies. In the study, doctors used the<lb />
middle strength. 0.075 percent.<lb />
Plans are under way to test a hot<lb />
candy version of the chili derivative<lb />
for treating lingering mouth pain.<lb />

1 was my great-grandmother, 1 would<lb />
die with an awful lot of important stuff<lb />
undone and my ghost would no doubt<lb />
be stuck haunting the sterile halls of<lb />
the General Classroom Building to the<lb />
end of time.<lb />
Now, I doubt I'll be dying any-<lb />
time soon, barring unforeseen acci-<lb />
dent. Medical science is much more<lb />
advanced now than it was in my great-<lb />
grandmother's day, and my life hasn't<lb />
been nearly as hard as hers must have<lb />
been. But on that day in the nursing<lb />
home I still found mortality staring<lb />
me in the face from the beginning of<lb />
the century, and boy was it ever ugly.<lb />
I'm not sure what point I want to<lb />
make here, what lesson I learned from<lb />
this story haphazardly picked from my<lb />
grandmother's brain. I guess it's just<lb />
the lesson that everyone learns, even-<lb />
tually, that death can strike at any<lb />
moment and we'd damn well better<lb />
make the most of our time. So what if<lb />
we'll probably live to a ripe old age?<lb />
We're still racing the clock.<lb />
This kind of realization adds a bit<lb />
more urgency to the unending crush<lb />
of day-to-day life, right down to the<lb />
most menial tasks. Let me tell you, a<lb />
little death urgency makes the soul-<lb />
crushing tedium of cleaning a sink full<lb />
of dirty dishes go by a whole lot faster.<lb />
And some days, that prospect is all<lb />
that gets me out of bed in the morn-<lb />
ing.<lb />
It's that kind of morbid irony that<lb />
makes life worth living<lb />

drops for the summer, however, the<lb />

Winning tradition halted<lb />
Baseball team<lb />
sees victory streak<lb />
end at 25 years<lb />
Amanda Ross<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
For 25 years, the baseball team<lb />
at ECU has had winning seasons. Not<lb />
since 1971 have they had a losing one.<lb />
Unfortunately, they broke that streak<lb />
this year.<lb />
After beating George Mason in<lb />
the first round of the CAA Champi-<lb />
onships in Kinston last week, ECU<lb />
dropped second and third round<lb />
games to Old Dominion and VCU, to<lb />
end their season 22-24.<lb />
The Pirates started the beginning<lb />
of the '96 year with a bang. They beat<lb />
top-rated Kentucky and Tennessee.<lb />
They then went on to win their next<lb />
15 of 23 games scheduled. However,<lb />
three of those games were postponed<lb />
due to rain. So by the end of March,<lb />
the Pirates had only dropped five<lb />
games. That's pretty impressive.<lb />
However, their luck changed dur-<lb />
ing the next two months. During<lb />
April, five games were won and 11<lb />
lost At that point they could only<lb />
hope that April wouid lead way into a<lb />
more successful May.<lb />
But it didn't. ECU finished May<lb />
with a 1-7 record before heading into<lb />
the tournament as the number five<lb />
seed. The tournament is set up in a<lb />
double elimination format. A team<lb />
isn't completely out until they drop<lb />
two games.<lb />
Last year, ECU dropped their first<lb />
two games in the tournament, first to<lb />
Richmond and then to William &<lb />
Mary. But this year, a first round win<lb />
over George Mason got ECU fans ex-<lb />
cited and the players pumped up. ECU<lb />
knew they had at least two more<lb />
games to play, hopefully more.<lb />
A 7-9 loss to Old Dominion and a<lb />
0-10 loss to VCU sent the Pirates away<lb />
with no championship. The last time<lb />
ECU won the title was 1993.<lb />
Many positive things came out of<lb />
this season. Six players earned 1996<lb />
All-CAA honors at the annual banquet<lb />
held before the tournament. Senior<lb />
second baseman Lamont Edwards and<lb />
sophomore pitcher Patrick Dunham<lb />
were named to the first team All-CAA.<lb />
Senior pitchers Bryan Smith and Jeff<lb />
Hewitt, sophomore first baseman<lb />
Randy Rigsby and freshman third<lb />
baseman Antaine Jones were honored<lb />
as second team All-CAA selections.<lb />
ECU had the most players hon-<lb />
ored by the CAA with the above six<lb />
mentioned, with ODU and VCU receiv-<lb />

I hate to see baseball come to an<lb />
end. Some of the most spectacular<lb />
plays I have ever seen were made at<lb />
Harrington Field this season. The<lb />
double plays, stoien bases, strikeouts,<lb />
diving catches and homeruns. ECU<lb />
has one of the most talented ball clubs<lb />
in the country. Of course that is bi-<lb />
ased but I am a die hard ECU fan. I<lb />
believe any person who saw a game<lb />
would say the same thing.<lb />

What started out as a surprising<lb />
season for Gary Overton's young Pi-<lb />
rates ended sooner than the Bucs had<lb />
planned as the VCU Rams handed the<lb />
ECU baseball team their dismissal<lb />
from the CAA tournament last week<lb />
in Kinston.<lb />
After a better start than expected,<lb />
beating 15 out of their first 20 oppo-<lb />
nents of the season, Overton's troops<lb />
hit a seven game skid that went into<lb />
the CAA tournament This skid was<lb />
topped off in Richmond when the Spi-<lb />
ders surprised the Pirates by sweep-<lb />
ing the purple and gold in the last<lb />
regular season CAA series. This<lb />
knocked the Pirates from second seed<lb />
to fifth seed all in seven games.<lb />
With all of this in mind most<lb />
young squads like Overton's would<lb />
hang their heads when they heard<lb />
that their first round opponent would<lb />
be George Mason, a team that was<lb />
predicted by some to win the CAA.<lb />
Oh, but the contrary. Sophomore All-<lb />
Conference selection Patrick Dunham<lb />
took the mound and blanked the Pa-<lb />
triots 1-0 to advance the Bucs to the<lb />
winner's bracket This set the match<lb />
up between the Pirates and the even-<lb />
tual CAA champion Monarchs of Old<lb />
Dominion who started that seven<lb />
game skid during the regular season.<lb />
"I was proud of our club perfor-<lb />
mance against Mason Overton said.<lb />
"Patrick Dunham pitched an out-<lb />
standing game<lb />
As the 1-0 score indicates, defense<lb />
was the name of the game as both<lb />
teams' aces were on the mound<lb />
duking it out in an old fashion<lb />
pitcher's duel.<lb />
"Our defense played an outstand-<lb />
ing ball game, but the lack of offense<lb />
did concern us going into the second<lb />
game with number one seed ODU<lb />
Overton said.<lb />
The Pirates looked for offense<lb />
and got it as the Bucs went back and<lb />
forth the whole way, trading the lead<lb />
with the Monarchs. The Pirates not<lb />
only put up the multiple hits against<lb />

ECU ended thier season at this year's CAA tourney, 22-24.<lb />
the conference, but they also pushed<lb />
across seven runs. Despite the im-<lb />
proved offensive production and a late<lb />
game rally, it was not enough for the<lb />
good guys as they dropped into the<lb />
loser's bracket 9-7 against the even-<lb />
tual champs.<lb />
"We played tough against ODU<lb />
and we fought hard, but things just<lb />
didn't fall our way Co-captain<lb />
Lamont Edwards said.<lb />
The phrase "out of the frying pan<lb />
and into the fire" comes to mind when<lb />
the Pirates had to play the confident<lb />
VCU rams in their next game.<lb />
"VCU is a team with a lot of con-<lb />
fidence who believes they should be<lb />
here and believes they can win it all<lb />
Overton said.<lb />
Gary Overton was not joking and<lb />
neither were the Rams as the VCU<lb />
lineup jumped all over Jeff Hewitt<lb />
early, registering six runs off of seven<lb />
hits in the first three stanzas. The<lb />
Pirates would look to junior Chad<lb />
Newton, who lasted only until the<lb />
sixth inning when Newton couldn't<lb />
find the umpire's inconsistent strike<lb />
zone.<lb />
Overton would then look to one<lb />
of his youngsters, freshman Kevyn<lb />
Fulcher, who closed out the game<lb />
with a strong performance. However,<lb />
it was too late as the Pirate offense<lb />

over three assists and three steals a game<lb />
for East Duplin. A two time All-East Cen-<lb />

83-16, won 84 percent of its games and<lb />
won the 1994 State 1-A championship.<lb />
In that '94 championship game, Melvin<lb />
