4<lb />
Our View<lb />
Just like Rodney Dangerfield, women's athletics at ECU get<lb />
no respect. They don't get much support either.<lb />
If you have attended a women's basketball game this sea-<lb />
son, no doubt you had plenty of places to sit. Then again, you<lb />
didn't see a reverse dunk over three defenders, did you? There<lb />
are no seven foot centers and cross-court alley-oops, either. That's<lb />
one reason women's athletics don't receive any support - be-<lb />
cause it's perceived as not being as exciting as a men's game.<lb />
This lack of interest and attendance leads to poor gate re-<lb />
ceipts, and when a sport doesn't make any money, it doesn't<lb />
receive much money from the athletic administration.<lb />
No support from the administration leads to poor recruit-<lb />
ing. No one wants to go to a school that has worn the same<lb />
uniforms for the past 12 years and no one attends the games.<lb />
Being in a top basketball conference remedies recruiting<lb />
problems real fast. UNC-Chapel Hill has a huge women's basket-<lb />
ball following. And when you talk women's basketball, you have<lb />
to talk about such women's powerhouses as Tennessee and the<lb />
SEC (Southeastern Conference). They have a packed house every<lb />
game.<lb />
What this all boils down to is winning. People go see teams<lb />
that win. Top basketball conferences are made of teams that<lb />
win. Recruits go to a school where they think they can win. It is<lb />
for that reason we need to give ourselves a little more time.<lb />
ECU has taken the first stride in becoming a winning program<lb />
by bringing in Hall of Famer Anne Donovan to coach the Lady<lb />
Pirates.<lb />
The support is also on the rise, partly due to Donovan. Like<lb />
N.C. State's Kay Yow (who graduated from ECU), people come<lb />
to see Donovan as well as the Lady Pirates. It's not every day<lb />
you get to see one of the handful of women in the basketball<lb />
Hall of Fame.<lb />
Our campus radio station WZMB does its part by covering<lb />
all of the Lady Pirate home games, and we at TEC provide<lb />
game coverage and all of the latest happenings in ECU women's<lb />
basketball. But that doesn't seem to spark enough interest to<lb />
fill the seats in Minges Coliseum.<lb />
There are other women's sports as well, such as women's<lb />
soccer (who will compete for only the third year this fall), vol-<lb />
leyball and softball who also need our support.<lb />
With fan support the school makes money. With money,<lb />
the teams get the latest in equipment and facilities. With that,<lb />
they get better recruits. With top recruits, you can build a win-<lb />
ning program. And with a winning program everyone wins.<lb />

Why don't<lb />
women's<lb />
athletics get the<lb />
respect they<lb />
deserve and<lb />
who's to<lb />
blame?<lb />
Procrastination stops efficiency<lb />
I've been meaning to write this<lb />
article for a while now In fact, I guess<lb />
you could say I have been putting it<lb />
off. This is about procrastination. I'm<lb />
actually thinking about finishing this<lb />
later.<lb />
OK. I'm ready to go now. How<lb />
often do you have the intention to<lb />
start or complete a task and then<lb />
something better comes along? For<lb />
me, it is a regular occurrence. I love<lb />
to procrastinate, it's a way of life.<lb />
As an English major, I have to<lb />
write an extremely large amount of<lb />
papers. Yet I always seem to wait until<lb />
the last minute. Why is that? What<lb />
causes me to want to wait until there<lb />
is no more time left and stress myself<lb />
until it's complete?<lb />
You could say it's laziness. You<lb />
could even say it's irresponsibility. The<lb />
plain truth is though, there is always<lb />
something better to do than what I<lb />
really am supposed to be doing.<lb />
Watching Highlander to me is more<lb />
fun than writing a long research pa-<lb />
per. Watching "People's Court" is even<lb />
more interesting than reading a book<lb />
about early Spartan societies and how<lb />
they coexisted with nature.<lb />
By being brought up in a society<lb />
that has so many leisure activities, I<lb />
have become accustomed to having<lb />
options and alternatives right at my<lb />
fingertips. If I don't want to read a<lb />
book or write a paper, I can play Sega<lb />
or go out and have a beer. As many<lb />
Brian Lewis Burns<lb />
Opinion Columnist<lb />
Why let a dismal<lb />
paper ruin your<lb />
weekend when<lb />
you can<lb />
procrastinate<lb />
until Monday?<lb />
students know, the most common al-<lb />
ternative to studying on a weekend is<lb />
to go out and drink and have a good<lb />
time.<lb />
There is nothing wrong with that.<lb />
Using the weekend as a chance to re-<lb />
lax and catch up on that sleep you<lb />
lost during the week is alright Unfor-<lb />
tunately, if there is a lot of work that<lb />
was not done during the week, the<lb />
weekend is the time to do this. I know,<lb />
no one ever wants to do this and so<lb />
they put it off until later. Hence forth,<lb />
procrastination is created!<lb />
Why sit down and read a book<lb />
and learn something when you can<lb />
procrastinate and go out and have<lb />
fun? Why let a dismal paper ruin your<lb />
weekend when you can procrastinate<lb />
until Monday? These are the moral<lb />
dilemmas that I have to deal with ev-<lb />
ery time something better comes<lb />
along instead of school work.<lb />
Yet procrastination is not found<lb />
solely in college students. Procrasti-<lb />
nation is a trait that can be found in<lb />
every person alive, perhaps even in<lb />
some that are dead. Do you see any<lb />
dead person hard at work completing<lb />
tasks that they should of done before?<lb />
I don't think so!<lb />
Procrastination whether big or<lb />
small, is found everywhere. When you<lb />
go to the mall and you want to go<lb />
look at some stores, yet you are hun-<lb />
gry. Do you put off eating until after<lb />
you shop, or do you put off shopping<lb />
until after you have eaten?<lb />
I am ready to move to<lb />
Procrastinationville. A place where<lb />
everyone is so lazy that the town was<lb />
never even built. That's the place for<lb />
me. I could go there, relax and have a<lb />
good time and put off all work until<lb />
later or, I could wait until later and<lb />
then move to Procrastinationville.<lb />
I think that without procrastina-<lb />
tion, this world would be more effi-<lb />
cient and better run. Of course I would<lb />
not want to live in a world where 1<lb />
actually do everything I am supposed<lb />
to do, when I'm supposed to do it<lb />
Well, I think that this pretty<lb />
much sums up procrastination, I have<lb />
more I would like to say about this<lb />

Man triumphs machine<lb />
Garry Kasparov, a 32-year-old<lb />
Russian and world chess champion,<lb />
has done what he said he would do -<lb />
beat IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer<lb />
in classical chess. Kasparov won in<lb />
the sixth game by trapping the bishop<lb />
and rook with his pawn. He took<lb />
home $400,000.<lb />
The event had been billed as the<lb />
ultimate contest. Man vs. Machine by<lb />
the sponsors, ACM, a New-York based<lb />
computer society, along with the print<lb />
and TV media. The match which took<lb />
place ih Philadelphia at the Pennsyl-<lb />
vania Convention Center, was watched<lb />
by literally millions on the World Wide<lb />
Web, at IBM's live site. An estimated<lb />
10 million people or five million on<lb />
Saturday and five million on Sunday,<lb />
Feb. 10th and 11th, accessed the site.<lb />
The chess-playing supercomputer<lb />
had been designed by IBM scientists<lb />
to beat chess champions. But what it<lb />
turned out to be was a failed experi-<lb />
ment What puzzles me though, is why<lb />
would scientists want a machine to<lb />
beat a man? What purpose would it<lb />
serve if it had beaten Kasparov?<lb />
Should we then surrender our lives<lb />
to the computer because it can beat<lb />
us?<lb />
What people seem to forget is<lb />
Neill Daiberg<lb />
Opinion Columnist<lb />
What people<lb />
seem to forget is<lb />
that compater<lb />
technology is<lb />
only a tool.<lb />
that computer technology is only a<lb />
tool. It is a tool useful in acquiring<lb />
and storing data, nt a ruler or po-<lb />
tential ruler of our lives.<lb />
Imagine a man who has just<lb />
purchased that convertible he's been<lb />
wanting to get for years. After he<lb />
buys it, he shows it to his wife who<lb />
says, "Honey, do you own the car, or<lb />
does the car own you?" Suddenly, he<lb />
doesn't know how to respond. He<lb />
wants to say "he" owns the car but<lb />
he realizes he's been spending a lot<lb />
of time with his car and not his wife.<lb />
The proper answer would be the car<lb />
owns him. We must not let the com-<lb />
puter own us.<lb />
Is it the scientist's goal to de-<lb />
sign a computer that owns us you<lb />
ask? I don't know exactly, but it is<lb />
our right to seriously question their<lb />
purpose, especially in a Democratic<lb />
nation such as this.<lb />
We must break the cycle. We are<lb />
using computer technology too much<lb />
as a crutch, we are becoming more<lb />
and more a lazy society that doesn't<lb />
want to leave our homes for work or<lb />
play. Take successful business corpo-<lb />
rations in a working situation; they<lb />
would rather fly to the customer to<lb />
make deals personally and close the<lb />
session with a handshake and a smile.<lb />
Shouldn't it be the same in the not<lb />
so successful workplace, where the<lb />
workers are together? This, specifi-<lb />
cally, is one area where computer<lb />
technology has become more than a<lb />
tool, here it has become the great<lb />
divider.<lb />
Finally, we have become a nation<lb />
of individuals. "Rugged Individual-<lb />

I purchased two tires, for the<lb />

day. I requested tires sized P22575<lb />
15 but tires sized P2157515 were<lb />

"taller" than a P2157515 tire. I<lb />
wanted the same size tires all the way<lb />

sold me something I did not request.<lb />
I approached the tire center cus-<lb />

rectifying the problem. 1 was subject<lb />

statements such as, "You'll have to<lb />

"Sawyer" brings<lb />
mischief to Wright<lb />
Jennifer Cofeman<lb />
Senior Writer<lb />
Ah, to be young and carefree<lb />
again.<lb />
Those were the days. Nothing to<lb />
do but go fishin' and catch frogs and<lb />
do a few chores around the house and<lb />
maybe go to schooi, if you had to. The<lb />
lazy days - that was Tom Sawyer's<lb />
life.<lb />
And what adventures! Finding<lb />
pirate's treasure, being held hostage<lb />
by a real Injun, and rafting on the<lb />
Mississippi. Was there nothing that<lb />
this boy couldn't do?<lb />
It appears as though there's one<lb />
thing he hasn't done, but it won't be<lb />
that way for long. Tom Sawyer has<lb />
never been to ECU. But that's about<lb />
to change.<lb />
On Saturday, Feb. 24, the ECU<lb />
Family Fare Series will present Mark<lb />
Twain's "Tom Sawyer" as performed<lb />
by the American Family Theater<lb />
(AFT). The AFT has been performing<lb />
for 23 years in over 500 cities. Their<lb />
shows have been seen by aver 3 mil-<lb />
lion children and families.<lb />
"Tom Sawyer" is the story of a<lb />
rambunctious young boy who lived in<lb />
Mississippi in the late 19th century.<lb />
In fact, rambunctious might be too<lb />
mild a term to use in describing Tom.<lb />
He's a con man, swindler, trouble-<lb />
maker and clown all rolled up in one<lb />
cherubic face. His best friend is Huck<lb />
Finn, who is also the subject of one<lb />
of Twain's novels. Together the two<lb />
are like a miniature tornado, but they<lb />
can leave a trail of destruction that is<lb />
nowhere near miniature.<lb />
You might be inclined to think<lb />
that Tom and Huck can't get into any<lb />
more trouble than all boys do, but<lb />
think again. In the course of the novel,<lb />
Tom proves himself to be the greatest<lb />
swindler of all time by conning all of<lb />
his friends into whitewashing his Aunt<lb />
Polly's fence - a chore that Tom was<lb />
supposed to do. It's not as if his<lb />
friends couldn't do their own white-<lb />
washing, either. He simply convinced<lb />
them that he was having more fun<lb />
than he'd ever had before, and so of<lb />
course they wanted to join in. But oh<lb />
no, it was too much fun! So darn if<lb />
they didn't pay him to let them do it<lb />
How's that for a con artist?<lb />
Another of Tom's schemes is to<lb />
form a club. Sounds innocent doesn't<lb />
it? He probably formed a 4-H club<lb />
maybe, or a Boy Scout troop. Not Tom.<lb />
To get into this club, you have to com-<lb />
mit murder. But hey, it's all in good<lb />
fun, right?<lb />
I don't mean to make it sound<lb />
like Tom is a rotten apple. He's actu-<lb />
ally a pretty good kid. The whitewash-<lb />
ing thing - well, hey, I've been guilty<lb />
of trying to convince my friends that<lb />
'gullible' isn't in the dictionary, so I<lb />
can't really say anything. And the<lb />
murder thing - well, no one ever ac-<lb />
tually does it Underneath it all, Tom<lb />
Sawyer has a good heart<lb />
This story is a timeless classic. It<lb />
has been made into movies, cartoons,<lb />
short stories and plays, and has been<lb />
enjoyed by millions of children and<lb />
adults in each of its forms. Don't miss<lb />
this performance, sure to be as popu-<lb />
lar as last year's "Aladdin" (also per-<lb />
formed by the AFT).<lb />
Tickets are on sale now in the<lb />

Comics lose their underwear<lb />
Mark Brett<lb />
Ufestyle Editor<lb />
So you heard that comic books aren't just for kids any-<lb />
more, and you went to look for some grown-up comics. But all<lb />
you saw was superheroes, the same kind of stuff you outgrew<lb />
or didn't read when you were a kid.<lb />
It is true that the comic book maiket is still ruled by guys<lb />
who run around in underwear. They're fun if you're into<lb />
that kind of thing, but they turn many mainstream readers off.<lb />
Luckily, there are alternatives, if you know where to look.<lb />
To help you in this quest our diligent "Notes from the<lb />
Underground" staff has compiled the following list of alterna-<lb />
tive comics for your reading pleasure <lb />
Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore. Comics that ap-<lb />
peal to women are few and far between, but this is one of the<lb />
best Strangers is the story of Katchoo (an artist with a myste-<lb />
rious past who may or may not be a lesbian) and Francine<lb />
(Katchoo's ultra-neurotic roomate and best friend). It's about<lb />
relationships and the bad choices people sometimes make.<lb />
While Moore's characterizations are sometimes too broad for<lb />
their own good, the series is full of genuine human moments,<lb />
and the artwork is lushly beautiful.<lb />
Lost Girls by Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie. Lost Girls<lb />
is well, technically, it's okay, it's pornography. But if s not<lb />
the sweaty, groping, obvious kind of stuff we think of as pom.<lb />
The story of three women of various ages who meet at a hotel<lb />
in the early 20th century, Lost Girls explores female sexuality<lb />
and sexual morality in a world on the brink of sudden, sweep-<lb />
ing change. While the sex is graphic, there's not a sleazy mo-<lb />
ment anywhere.<lb />
From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell. From<lb />
Hell is a historical drama about Jack the Ripper. Part crime<lb />
story, part horror, part psychological thriller, part magic real-<lb />
ism, this is possibly the best comic on the market right now. In<lb />
much the same way that Lost Girls looks at sex, From Hell<lb />
looks at violence and its affect on history.<lb />
By the same author A Small Killing, Watchmen.<lb />
Sin City by Frank Miller. This book brings back crime<lb />
comics with a vengeance. Imagine hard men walking lonely<lb />
through rainy nights. Imagine smoky dames with barroom<lb />
eyes slugging back shots of hard liquor. Imagine Mickey<lb />
Spillane filtered through Clint Eastwood's Jagged Edge, and<lb />
you might begin to get the idea. If you like your fiction hard-<lb />
boiled, baby, it don't get any harder than this.<lb />

was wrong.<lb />
"Savannah" is not about strippers<lb />

Bold, brave, artistic films appear<lb />

One has opened at the Buccaneer<lb />

this humble critic beseeches every<lb />
citizen who appreciates art to see it<lb />
The only way to encourage Carmike<lb />
Cinemas to show first-rate artistic<lb />
endeavors in Greenville is for patrons<lb />
to support the rare artistic film that<lb />
opens here.<lb />
As the final credits rolled on<lb />
Leaving Las Vegas, I sat stunned and<lb />
bewildered in my seat Only after the<lb />
lights came up did I realise that for<lb />
two hours I had not moved. The im-<lb />
ages on the screen before me had been<lb />
so engrossing, and so disconcerting,<lb />
that for two hours I focused entirely<lb />
on the film.<lb />
The subtitle of Leaving Las Ve-<lb />
gas is "a love story The uncondi-<lb />
tional love in this film will make many<lb />
an audience member reconsider their<lb />
own meager attempts at unconditional<lb />
love. The relationship between an al-<lb />
coholic named Ben Sanderson (Nicho-<lb />
las Cage) and a prostitute named Sera<lb />
(Elizabeth Shue) arises because of a<lb />
deep, urgent need on the part of each<lb />
to find companionship. Ben and Sera<lb />
must accept the lifestyle chosen by the<lb />
other in order to forge a meaningful<lb />
bond<lb />
To say that Leaving Las Vegas is<lb />
like no other film 1 have ever seen<lb />
would be unfair to the film because it<lb />
defies comparison. Leaving Las Ve-<lb />
gas blazes new territory in cinematic<lb />
storytelling. The lurid details of the<lb />
film - the drinking, the sex, the vio-<lb />
lence - place it on the border of por-<lb />
nography. But the only way to tell a<lb />
tale of this intensity is to include the<lb />
sordid scenes. The emotional inten-<lb />
sity of the storytelling breaks free of<lb />
Hollywood romantic cliches. Leaving<lb />
Las Vegas defies all standard, conven-<lb />

moviemaking.<lb />
Ben Sanderson bums his clothes,<lb />

they call it Or should I say, "Music for<lb />
the Minded which is how Schleigho<lb />
puts it It's kind of a big tide to slap on<lb />
yourself.<lb />
However, I must say that after lis-<lb />
tening to their self-titled debut this<lb />
powered quartet from Massachusetts is<lb />
exactly what they claim to be.<lb />
The band members compliment<lb />
each other very well. Each are good mu-<lb />
sicians in their own right When each<lb />
musician does his or her own thing to<lb />
contribute to the vibe presented, you<lb />
can expect a sound that is not fixated<lb />
around one instrument or individual.<lb />
You can also expect a band that is fo-<lb />
cused on playing for one reason: the<lb />
love of it<lb />
0 Their sound changes often. From<lb />
moody waves that Primus might have<lb />
sailed over to the funk of Phish to Chi-<lb />
cago-style blues, this band is all over<lb />
the place.<lb />
It seems as if they're not afraid to<lb />
try anything. To do that a band must<lb />
have consistency, and that is exactly<lb />
what drummer Erik Egol gives<lb />
Schleigho. His jazzy high hat enables<lb />
them to play off riffs that many bands<lb />
have only wanted to do.<lb />
As far as the band's direction goes,<lb />
I would have to say that the vocals are<lb />
not the focal point The singing stood<lb />
second in line to the outstanding<lb />
rhythm section laid down by guitarist<lb />
Suke Cerulo, and bassistvocalist Drew<lb />
McCabe.<lb />
That sound gives them groove like<lb />
no other, and shares it with everyone<lb />
else that they collaborate with. Groove,<lb />
in essence, is the most essential con-<lb />
cept for this band, as it should be for<lb />
everyone else.<lb />
I must say that another important<lb />
factor that made mis CD what it is would<lb />
be Jesse Gibbon's unbelievable talent for<lb />
vocals and keyboards. Just by the way<lb />
he played on this album, one can easity<lb />
tell that he has come close to master-<lb />
ing the art of jazz, a feat that not many<lb />
accomplish.<lb />
Combining all of the sources to-<lb />
gether that made this album possible,<lb />
(blues, jazz, funk, etc.), you get<lb />
Schleigho. A band whose name has no<lb />
meaning, but whose music does.<lb />
If you're looking for an album with<lb />
standard songs that may be written in<lb />
standard form, don't buy this album. It's<lb />
not even in the same universe.<lb />
If you're looking for an album that<lb />
breaks rules and regulations and gives<lb />
off a vibe that even the wildest cat can<lb />
mellow out to, buy this one.<lb />

make them want to come back. Believe<lb />
it or not, "Melrose Place" has done this<lb />
very well, giving us characters that<lb />
range from the absurd and whirry to a<lb />
Lady Macbeth wannabe. "Savannah"<lb />
drags like a Georgia summer, with no<lb />
mint julips to keep you company.<lb />
What this show needs to do is play<lb />
with its characters a little more; make<lb />
them more interesting. All three ac-<lb />
tresses are gorgeous, but only Luner<lb />
seems to have a hold on the character<lb />
she'd like to play. Maybe her time on<lb />
the show "Just The Ten of Us" has made<lb />
her hungry for a real role.<lb />
I read somewhere that Sturges left<lb />
a daytime soap to do "Savannah I<lb />
think she was really canned for being<lb />
uninteresting.<lb />
Last, but not least Robin Lively is<lb />
the most disappointing of the three to<lb />
me. I remember (and loved) Lively on<lb />
"Doogie Houser, MD" and "Chicago<lb />
Hope where she played nice-girl<lb />
nurses with bizarre eccentricities. This<lb />
show makes her really boring. Why<lb />
can't she play the Smart One that has<lb />
a near-fatal car crash and comes out<lb />
of it wanting to be some sort of super-<lb />
villain? 1 don't know. I'm grasping here.<lb />
Something should be done.<lb />
Maybe they could get Ray Wise<lb />
to kill one of the girls, walk around<lb />
bug-eyed and crying, screaming, Bob<lb />
saw tl !em t'nsaw tl" into the mirror.<lb />
That would make this interesting!<lb />
As a last straw, what really amazes<lb />
me it that there is a parental discre-<lb />
tion warning at the beginning of each<lb />
episode. Why? There is nothing going<lb />
on here that you couldn't catch done<lb />
better on the Family Channel. Maybe<lb />
that's what "Savannah" needs, some<lb />
"NYPD Blue" level controversy. And<lb />
I'll bet any of the actors on "Savan-<lb />
nah" have a better butt than Dennis<lb />
Franz.<lb />
On a scale of one to 10, "Savan-<lb />
nah" rates a five. I'm gonna fetch me<lb />
another julip.<lb />

Miller, a creator who cut his teeth<lb />
on ninja superhero comics, has found<lb />
his calling here. Though he's told<lb />
more complex stories, he's doing<lb />
things with black and white art that<lb />
comics haven't seen before.<lb />

Cerebus by Dave Sim. Cerebus<lb />
started out 19 years ago as a Conan<lb />
parody featuring a funny animal aardvark.<lb />
It has since expanded into a genuine<lb />
political epic exploring the politics of<lb />
government, religion, romance and the<lb />
human mind. And it still stars the same<lb />
little grey aardvark. Sweeping, complex<lb />
and controversial, Cerebus demands com-<lb />

Black Hole by Charles Bums. One<lb />
of the most celebrated creators in un-<lb />
derground comics. Bums' first ongoing<lb />
series explores the weird and savage<lb />
world of teenagers. The twist? A strange,<lb />
sexually-transmitted disease is turning<lb />
teens into misshapen freaks. Fat-packed<lb />
with strange symbolism and grotesque<lb />
artwork, Black Hole is Dazed and Con-<lb />

Leaving Las Vegas is probably<lb />
the most forthright portrayal of alco-<lb />
holism ever made. The film unflinch-<lb />
ingly accepts the characters for who<lb />
they are just as they accept each other.<lb />
Just as in life itself, happy endings do<lb />
not always happen.<lb />
Director Mike Figgis has had a<lb />
difficult time in Hollywood, making<lb />
the subpar Internal Affairs and the<lb />
disappointing Mr. Jones. Nothing in<lb />
his past presaged the masterpiece he<lb />
would direct here. Figgis needed to<lb />
get away from Hollywood for a time<lb />
and then make a film completely on<lb />
his own without studio pressures.<lb />
Adapting John O'Brien's storv (sadly<lb />
O'Brien, an alcoholic himself, died<lb />
shortly before the release of Leaving<lb />
Las Vegas), Figgis opted for cinematic<lb />
realism at its purest level.<lb />
1 urge you to see Leaving Las<lb />
Vegas. It is easily the best film that<lb />
has opened in Greenville in the last<lb />
12 months and has garnered Oscar<lb />
nominations for Cage, Shue and<lb />
Figgis. Leaving Las Vegas is quite<lb />
simply a magnificent work of art that<lb />
will remain with the viewer long after<lb />
the theater lights have come on.<lb />
On a scale of one to 10, Leaving<lb />
Las Vegas rates a 10.<lb />

Good luck!<lb />

The Wofford Terriers had<lb />
planned to come into Minges and<lb />
pull off a victory, but the Pirates<lb />
sent them home with their tails be-<lb />
tween their legs.<lb />
ECU jumped out to a quick 2-0<lb />
lead when Von Bryant hit a shot<lb />
from underneath. Another Bryant<lb />
lay up pushed the score to 4-0. But<lb />
Wofford was stubborn in the first<lb />
half and just wouldn't go away.<lb />
With 10:18 left in the first half,<lb />
Wofford cut ECU'S lead to one point,<lb />
12-11, but a Damon Van<lb />
Weerdhuizen three pointer put ECU<lb />
back up by three 15-11.<lb />
The Pirates' biggest leads were<lb />
11 points and three different times<lb />
in the first half, ECU reached that<lb />
margin. The first time was from a<lb />
Chuck Jones free throw and the last<lb />
two times were both from Vic<lb />
Hamilton. With 2:44 remaining<lb />
Hamilton hit a 15' jumper and then<lb />
again with 1:28 left he hit an 18'<lb />
jumper.<lb />
Hamilton's jump shot continues<lb />
to improve with every game.<lb />
"I continue to come in an hour<lb />
early before practice and work on<lb />
my jump shot Hamilton said. "I<lb />
know that I have to step my game<lb />
up<lb />
At the half, ECU was ahead by<lb />
nine points, 30-21. Tim Basham,<lb />
Deron Rippey and Hamilton led ECU<lb />
with six points each.<lb />
The players knew just because<lb />
this was a non conference game with<lb />
a team that was 3-19, they couldn't<lb />
take them for granted.<lb />
"You can't look past any team<lb />
Basham said.<lb />
"Wofford is a great<lb />
team with excellent<lb />
shooters and they<lb />
came out ready to<lb />
play tonight"<lb />
Head Coach Joe<lb />
Dooley kept encourag-<lb />
ing his team to play<lb />
hard even throughout<lb />
the game.<lb />
"It wasn't pretty<lb />
but we played well<lb />
and we just out<lb />
hustled them Dooley<lb />
said. "All I kept telling<lb />
the team is that we<lb />
have to play hard. We<lb />
did just what we<lb />
needed to do<lb />
The Pirates shot<lb />
43 percent for the<lb />
- first half compared to<lb />
Wofford's 20 percent<lb />
From the three point<lb />
range ECU shot 37<lb />
percent while the Ter-<lb />
riers shot 12 percent<lb />
However, Wofford did out shoot the<lb />
Pirates from the line 88 percent to<lb />
to back victories<lb />

Senior forward Vic Hamilton shows his power inside last<lb />
Monday night. Hamilton had 21 points and seven rebounds.<lb />
ECU's 63 percent<lb />
The second half started off<lb />
slowly for Wofford.<lb />
ECU's Jonathan<lb />
Kerner scored first for<lb />
ECU in the second<lb />
half with a shot under-<lb />
neath. ECU again had<lb />
their lead back to<lb />
double digits 32-21.<lb />
The closest<lb />
Wofford came was<lb />
with 15:03 remaining<lb />
in the second half<lb />
when the Terriers<lb />
pulled within six<lb />
points. The next two<lb />
possessions were big<lb />
for the Pirates.<lb />
Basham hit a three<lb />
pointer and on their<lb />
next trip down<lb />
Hamilton slammed<lb />
one in to give the Pi-<lb />
rates an 11 point lead<lb />
with 12:51 remaining.<lb />
The Terriers<lb />
couldn't recover after<lb />
that, and ECU went on<lb />
to build up a 20 point lead when<lb />
Kerner nailed two free throws. Af-<lb />
ter that lead, the closest Wofford<lb />
came was 14 points.<lb />
Two slam dunks from Jones and<lb />
Kerner towards the end of the game<lb />
put the exclamation point on the<lb />
game.<lb />
Dooley was pleased with Jones'<lb />
performance; he came off the bench<lb />
and scored five points grabbed seven<lb />
rebounds and played quality minutes<lb />
for the Pirates.<lb />
"Chuck Jones stepped up and<lb />
did a very nice job tonight Dooley<lb />
said.<lb />
ECU won the game by 19<lb />
points, 79-60.<lb />
Wofford's Head Coach Richard<lb />
Johnson said this is the same sce-<lb />
nario his team has faced all season.<lb />
"You could go to any of our old<lb />
post game tapes and run those<lb />
Johnson said. "It's the same old<lb />
story. We played a pretty good first<lb />
half. We had some stupid turnovers<lb />
and no pressure. We limited their<lb />
second half opportunities, but when<lb />
you are shooting 20 percent you are<lb />
not going to beat anybody<lb />
Hamilton again came off the<lb />
bench and had a big night for ECU<lb />
as he poured in 21 points and<lb />

Being consistent is the key to<lb />
wins and a win is exactly what the<lb />
women's basketball team got from<lb />
Campbell.<lb />
The Lady Pirates hosted the<lb />
Lady Camels Tuesday night, and<lb />
ECU never gave up their double<lb />
digit lead which they gained half-<lb />
way through the first half.<lb />
Campbell won the tip off and<lb />
jumped out to a 0-2 lead. ECU's<lb />
first score came from Justine<lb />
Allpress who nailed a shot from the<lb />
three point arc. Campbell answered<lb />
with a shot of their own and ECU's<lb />
head coach quickly called a 20 sec-<lb />
ond time out<lb />
After that time out, the Lady<lb />
Pirates went on an 8-0 run and<lb />
made the score 11-6. ECU kept<lb />
building on that lead and eventu-<lb />
ally, they built themselves a 21<lb />
point lead after a LaTesha Sutton<lb />
jumper. That same mm<lb />
momentum was<lb />
with them<lb />
throughout the<lb />
rest of the game.<lb />
ECU sported<lb />
a 16 point lead at<lb />
half time, 37-21.<lb />
Two Lady Pi-<lb />
rates were in<lb />
double digits.<lb />
Allpress had 11<lb />
points while<lb />
Danielle<lb />
Charlesworth<lb />
added 10 of her<lb />
own. Other lead- mmmmmmmm<lb />
ing scorers were<lb />
Tracey Kelley with six and Sutton<lb />
and Shay Hayes each contributing<lb />
four each<lb />
Leading scorers<lb />

ECU shot 55 percent from the<lb />
field and from three point range.<lb />
Allpress and Charlesworth com-<lb />
bined to hit five of nine three point<lb />
shots.<lb />
Campbell only hit 33 percent<lb />
 of their shots<lb />
in the first half.<lb />
The Lady<lb />
Camels never<lb />
got their of-<lb />
fense in sync<lb />
and were never<lb />
a real threat to<lb />
the Lady Pi-<lb />
rates.<lb />
ECU con-<lb />
tinued to ex-<lb />
pand their lead<lb />
in the second<lb />
half. The Lady<lb />
Pirates never<lb />
 let the lead get<lb />
below 12<lb />
points.<lb />
Tomekia "Fruiky" Blackmon<lb />
scored the first bucket for ECU<lb />
when she hit a shot from three feet.<lb />
Two Lady Pirates<lb />
were in double<lb />
digits. Allpress<lb />
had 11 points<lb />
while Danielle<lb />
Charlesworth<lb />
added 10 of her<lb />
own.<lb />
From that point on a steady stream<lb />
of ECU shots found themselves at<lb />
the bottom of the net. With 16:47<lb />
left in the game, Charlesworth<lb />
drilled another three pointer.<lb />
The closest Campbell came was<lb />
with 9:23 remaining, when the Lady<lb />
Camels cut the lead to 12. That was<lb />
due in part to the full court press<lb />
Campbell put on the Lady Pirates.<lb />
According to Charlesworth, the<lb />
team worked on breaking the press<lb />
in anticipation of the Lady Camels<lb />
press.<lb />
"We concentrated on it a lot"<lb />
Charlesworth said. "I think we took<lb />
care of it for the most part and we<lb />
had a couple let downs, but I think<lb />
we were well prepared for it"<lb />
However, ECU didn't give in<lb />
and they mounted their own come-<lb />
back and with 1:47 remaining, the<lb />
Lady Pirates had a 24 point lead.<lb />
The game ended with a 19<lb />
point lead in favor of the Pirates,<lb />
