Pirates look to remain unbeaten at home<lb/>
Brian Paiz<lb/>
End Zone Writer<lb/>
ECU hopes there won't be a let<lb/>
down when they host the 3-7 Memphis<lb/>
Tigers on Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen<lb/>
Stadium. The Pirates assured them-<lb/>
selves of a second straight Liberty Bowl<lb/>
appearance with last Saturday's 28-7<lb/>
win over Tulsa, and Kentucky's win over<lb/>
Cincinnati. However, ECU still has a<lb/>
chance at an undefeated record at<lb/>
home. The Pirates, already 4-0 this sea-<lb/>
son in Greenville, are hoping to put the<lb/>
finishing touches on a perfect 1995<lb/>
home record.<lb/>
"We've got a chance for an unde-<lb/>
feated record at home, which was one<lb/>
of our major, major objectives that we<lb/>
set in the preseason said ECU Head<lb/>
Coach Steve Logan. "Our seniors are<lb/>
playing in their last game, and you al-<lb/>
ways want to send those guys out a win-<lb/>
ner. "We've got everything in the world<lb/>
to play for, and we have to get focused<lb/>
The contest between the Pirates and<lb/>
the Tigers has lost some of its luster<lb/>
from last season, as the game between<lb/>
these two teams in 1994 decided who<lb/>
would go to the Liberty Bowl. Memphis<lb/>
has struggled under first year Coach Rip<lb/>
Scherer, who came to Memphis from<lb/>
James Madison. The Tigers are averag-<lb/>
ing 13 points a game, scoring just 25<lb/>
points in their last four games combined<lb/>
and with our 1-2 in the Liberty Bowl<lb/>
Alliance, with their loan win coming<lb/>
over Tulane<lb/>
Logan and his Pirates know, how-<lb/>
ever, are not to overlook this Memphis<lb/>
squad. The last time the Tigers visited<lb/>
Greenville, they handed the Pirates a<lb/>
34-7 loss.<lb/>
"It's going to be a coaching job and<lb/>
the responsibility of our players to keep<lb/>
their act together, keep focused and get<lb/>
the job done on Saturday said Logan.<lb/>
Memphis has been plagued by turn-<lb/>
overs all season long. The Tigers have<lb/>
turned the ball over 32 times in 10<lb/>
games. Memphis has also not had a run-<lb/>
ning back rush for 100 yards in 1995.<lb/>
The Tigers have played a tough road<lb/>
schedule, thus far, losing to Michigan<lb/>
and SEC West champion Arkansas. One<lb/>
bright spot for Memphis, has been their<lb/>
defense, a strong point for Tiger squads<lb/>
in recent years. It is led by Jerome<lb/>
Woods, who has 115 tackles and five<lb/>
interceptions this season. Junior defen-<lb/>
sive end Marvin Thomas has six sacks<lb/>
on the year.<lb/>
"They've got a defense that they<lb/>
think they can win with said Logan.<lb/>
"They've been scoring with intercep-<lb/>
tions, fumble returns and all those kinds<lb/>
of things, which is characteristic of the<lb/>
number of blitzes and schemes that they<lb/>
employ<lb/>
On offense, the Tigers have used<lb/>
three different quarterbacks this sea-<lb/>
son, but look for junior Quadry Ander-<lb/>
son to get the starting nod against the<lb/>
Pirates. He scored his first collegiate<lb/>
touchdown last week against Southern<lb/>
Miss and he also had a 41-yard run<lb/>
against Tulsa.<lb/>

Marcus Crandell will lead the Pirate offense against the new 4-3<lb/>
Defense of Memphis. Memphis gave up 30 points last year to ECU.<lb/>
ing list. This season he has 31 recep-<lb/>
tions for 317 yards.<lb/>
ANALYSIS:<lb/>
If the Pirates can stay focused, they<lb/>
should be able to achieve their unde-<lb/>
feated season. ECU will be trying to<lb/>
send their seniors out with a victory,<lb/>
which includes linebacker Mark Llbiano<lb/>
who has 112 tackles on the year <lb/>
Mitchell Galloway leads the receiving<lb/>
corps with 44 receptions for 600 yards<lb/>
and two touchdowns Marcus Crandell<lb/>
needs two touchdown passes on Satur-<lb/>
day to tie Jeff Blake's record of 43.<lb/>
Crandell has already broken two of<lb/>
Blake's records, thus far, this season.<lb/>

Seniors bid farewell to Ficklen<lb/>
Cralg Perrott<lb/>
End Zone Writer<lb/>
This Saturday's game with Memphis will<lb/>
be the last time that the Pirate seniors will<lb/>
play in front of their home fans at Dowdy-<lb/>
Ficklen Stadium.<lb/>
It is the second year in a row that ECU<lb/>
has had a winning season and a Liberty Bowl<lb/>
berth. For those seniors that were redshirted,<lb/>
this will be the dose of their fifth year as a<lb/>
Pirate and their third bowl appearance in their<lb/>
college football career.<lb/>
"We consider ourselves fortunate be-<lb/>
cause not many people get to go to three<lb/>
bowl games in their career, especially two in<lb/>
a row said senior center Kevin Wiggins. "I<lb/>
didn't play any in the Peach Bowl. We won<lb/>
and it was fun and everthing, but being able<lb/>
to play in these last two makes it enjoyable<lb/>
for me. I'm making a difference on the field,<lb/>
that's what makes it so good<lb/>
According to Wiggins, to return to the<lb/>
Liberty Bowl is not the only thing on the<lb/>
minds of the seniors this year, they are look-<lb/>
ing to remain undefeated at home.<lb/>
"I don't want to be satisfied with just<lb/>
going to the Liberty Bow) Wiggins said. "I<lb/>
want to win nine games this season and ex-<lb/>
tend our home game winning streak. We<lb/>
haven't lost a game<lb/>
in Ficklen this year. I<lb/>
can't even remember<lb/>
the last time we lost<lb/>
here<lb/>
Last Saturday's<lb/>
game attendance was<lb/>
pitiful. The Memphis<lb/>
game coming up tHs<lb/>
weekend will be the<lb/>
last chance to see<lb/>
some quality seniors<lb/>
play in their home<lb/>
stadium. If anything,<lb/>
Wiggins hopes that<lb/>
another winning sea-<lb/>
son will lay a founda-<lb/>
tion for future Pirate<lb/>
fans.<lb/>
"If we keep win-<lb/>
ning at home, our fan support will be a lot<lb/>
better<lb/>
H-back Mithell Galloway echoes Wiggins'<lb/>
sentiments.<lb/>
"We're just going to try to leave some-<lb/>
thing on the field here that the fans can re-<lb/>
member for next year, and that these younger<lb/>
guys can take a hold of and just roll on with<lb/>
it Galloway said.<lb/>
Nevertheless, Galloway considers the<lb/>
Memphis game to be extremely important to<lb/>
These seniors will make theirfinal appearance in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Saturday.<lb/>
him personally, and his fellow classmates.<lb/>
"This is the one game that we will re-<lb/>
member as a senior Galloway added. "We're<lb/>
going to come out and play hard<lb/>
Last year the Pirates were soundly de-<lb/>
feated by Illinois in the Uberty Bowl 3(H).<lb/>
ECU moved the ball well between the 20-<lb/>
yard lines, but just couldn't punch it in for<lb/>
the score. Galloway believes that this year's<lb/>
outcome will be totally different<lb/>
"This year we're a little more focused,<lb/>
we're a little more attentive, and I think we'll<lb/>
get into the red zone and put some points on<lb/>
the board this year Galloway said.<lb/>
Senior defensive tackle Walter Scott is<lb/>
one of the elite Pirates that has a Peach Bowl<lb/>
ring. To him, the past four seasons since that<lb/>
miracle year have flown by, making this last<lb/>
game against Memphis even more spedal.<lb/>
"it's my last home game Scott said. "I<lb/>
can't believe these last five years have rushed<lb/>
away. I guess that's life<lb/>

Crane strives to return to starting line-up<lb/>
Junior LB patiently<lb/>
awaits the call to<lb/>
rise to previous<lb/>
prominence<lb/>
Amanda Ross<lb/>
End Zone Writer<lb/>
For some athletes losing a starting<lb/>
position might be the end of their ca-<lb/>
reer. But for B.J. Crane it just pushes<lb/>
him harder.<lb/>
This junior linebacker from College<lb/>
Park, Ga. didn't make ECU his first<lb/>
choice right away. He was intent on<lb/>
going to SMU, but after one visit to ECU<lb/>
he was hooked and there was no going<lb/>
back. It was at that point Crane decided<lb/>
he wanted to wear a little purple and<lb/>
gold.<lb/>
During the 1993 season, his fresh-<lb/>
man year, he recorded 49 tackles, in-<lb/>
cluding 22 solos. The four games he<lb/>
started in were against Syracuse, Cen-<lb/>
tral Florida, Memphis State and South<lb/>
Carolina. He posted impressive numbers<lb/>
starting as a true freshman. Against<lb/>
Memphis State, he forced and recovered<lb/>
a fumble, intercepted a pass against<lb/>
Central Florida and deflected a pass<lb/>
against Syracuse.<lb/>
The Syracuse game was Crane's first<lb/>
collegiate game. That game was nation-<lb/>
ally televised on ESPN. However, Crane<lb/>
says that game was nothing compared<lb/>
to his first scrimmage. Before that<lb/>
scrimmage Crane was second on the<lb/>
depth chart so he knew he needed to<lb/>
have an impressive showing to move up<lb/>
on the roster. Knowing he didn't want<lb/>
to redshirt that year, Crane came out<lb/>
and impressed the coaches enough to<lb/>
the point he was moved up to first on<lb/>
the depth chart.<lb/>
"Starting on national television my<lb/>
first game was cake compared to that<lb/>
said Crane.<lb/>
Going into his sophomore year,<lb/>
Crane knew how important his role was<lb/>
to the team. He finished the season with<lb/>
79 total tackles, with 44 solos. Those<lb/>
numbers allowed him to finish second<lb/>
best on the squad. Some of Crane's ac-<lb/>
complishments included 17 stops at<lb/>
Duke, 11 tackles against Temple and<lb/>
13 tackles against Syracuse.<lb/>
This year Crane has taken a differ-<lb/>
ent position. Despite having not started<lb/>
any games, he knows he still plays a<lb/>
big role in ECU's success.<lb/>
"Last year I was a starter and<lb/>
B. J. Crane<lb/>
started seven games, this year I haven't<lb/>
started any Crane said. "Coming off<lb/>
the bench I'd like to be on the field<lb/>
first, because that is what I am used to.<lb/>
But I've handled it well because I've<lb/>
grown up and because I know that in<lb/>
time my time will come<lb/>
This season he has recorded 58<lb/>
tackles. When he looks at his numbers<lb/>
he asks himself if he is making a play<lb/>
every five plays. This is what he wants<lb/>
to do and feels he is capable of han-<lb/>
dling that responsibility.<lb/>
"I think for the most part every five<lb/>
plays that I'm on ths field I've made a<lb/>
tackle. As long as I am that productive<lb/>
I feel like that's pretty good<lb/>
As with any athlete goals are a big<lb/>
part of the athlete's success. How well<lb/>
an athlete can accomplish the goals set<lb/>
before them shows their capability on<lb/>
the field. Crane's goals were altered just<lb/>
a bit after he found out he wouldn't be<lb/>
starting.<lb/>
"I wanted to one, help us get to a<lb/>
bowl; two, I wanted to be productive;<lb/>
three, I wanted to be a leader. I want<lb/>
people to say 'hey B.J. say something<lb/>
or do something<lb/>
Leadership is a key aspect in<lb/>
Crane's life. As a member of the Foot-<lb/>
ball Academic Leadership team he tours<lb/>
area high schools and motivates young<lb/>
students. Crane's ability to speak out<lb/>
not only helps him talk to students, but<lb/>
it also helps him on the field.<lb/>
"I want to be able to say something<lb/>
that might motivate somebody else to<lb/>
do it said Crane.<lb/>
Crane feels he is a very spiritual<lb/>
person, contrary to how people might<lb/>
perceive his demeanor. He believes God<lb/>
wanted him to come here, so he is go-<lb/>
ing to give it everything he's got.<lb/>
"Honestly more than anything I<lb/>
think it's just meant to be that I lead<lb/>
Crane said<lb/>
With some key<lb/>
linebackers leaving<lb/>
after this year<lb/>
(Libiano, Foreman)<lb/>
Crane will have to<lb/>
step up his play. He<lb/>
doesn't believe<lb/>
their leaving will<lb/>
effect them too<lb/>
much since players<lb/>
have been rotated<lb/>
in and out of the<lb/>
linebacker posi-<lb/>
tions. If there<lb/>
hadn't been the ro-<lb/>
tation then he feels<lb/>
their loss could pos-<lb/>
sibly hurt them<lb/>
more, but Crane<lb/>
doesn't see it as a<lb/>
big obstacle stand-<lb/>
ing in the way next<lb/>
year.<lb/>
"Regardless of<lb/>
how much or how<lb/>
little I'm on the<lb/>
field I'm going to<lb/>
take the initiative to<lb/>
lead these guys<lb/>
Never at a loss<lb/>
for words, Crane compares football to<lb/>
a ladder. Interestingly enough the anal-<lb/>
ogy he uses is one that could be used<lb/>
for life.<lb/>
"If you're going to push someone<lb/>
up a ladder you can't do it standing on<lb/>
the ground. If you're going to get them<lb/>
to go up that ladder you have to step<lb/>
up too. Every time you push them up a<lb/>
little, you have to step up a little. And<lb/>
if I help push this team up the ladder<lb/>
that means I'm going up too<lb/>
With ECU securing a Liberty Bowl<lb/>
bid for the second consecutive year,<lb/>
Crane advises opponents to watch out.<lb/>
ECU is coming full force, to avenge last<lb/>
years loss to Illinois.<lb/>
"I challenge anybody who plays in<lb/>
that game on Dec. 30 not to be ready<lb/>
because if they aren't they're going to<lb/>
go home like we did last year, because<lb/>
were coming to win a game<lb/>
Crane is positive that ECU will have<lb/>
a positive showing and people will no<lb/>
longer say EC- who? With growing suc-<lb/>
cess accredited to the football team,<lb/>
Crane feels in a lot of ways ECU has<lb/>
just arrived on the scene. With back-<lb/>
to-back winning seasons, ECU looks<lb/>
forward to continuing the good fortune<lb/>
for years to come.<lb/>
"Starting from Dec. 30 to eternity<lb/>
ECU will be one of the most respected<lb/>
Crane had 79 tackles in 1994, including 44 solo<lb/>
stops. His total was second best on the squad.<lb/>
teams in the nation said Crane.<lb/>
For Crane his father has been the<lb/>
biggest role model in his life. Crane's<lb/>
father is the one person who has<lb/>
shaped his thinking.<lb/>
"If you talk to my father he would<lb/>
be the same person that I am. He is<lb/>
my hero<lb/>
Crane says his father is just as<lb/>
much as a motivator as he is, and he<lb/>
believes that is where he obtained that<lb/>
quality.<lb/>
"All my idiosyncrasies have been<lb/>
formed by him<lb/>
Crane tries to live his life now, the<lb/>
way he would like to live it in the fu-<lb/>
ture. His family is important to him<lb/>
and one day he hopes to have a family<lb/>
of his own.<lb/>
"I live my life to shape myself to<lb/>
be the best son, and one day best hus-<lb/>
band and father that I can be<lb/>
As for his future career, Crane sees<lb/>
stars. No, he doesn't want to be an<lb/>
astronomer, he wants to be a star. He<lb/>
sees himself becoming a television per-<lb/>
sonality.<lb/>
"I want to be someone so when I<lb/>
walk into a room people will say 'there<lb/>
he is<lb/>
Is ESPN-calling? Who knows. But<lb/>
watch out Keith Olberman, you may<lb/>
have a new co-host.<lb/>

Adversity no match for Cooper<lb/>
Dill Dlllard<lb/>
End Zone Writer<lb/>
In the world of sports, there are so<lb/>
many victory stories. Often times some<lb/>
stories are overlooked or not empha-<lb/>
sized.<lb/>
When you look at just an ECU foot-<lb/>
ball roster and you look up senior<lb/>
cornerback Hank Cooper, you'll only see<lb/>
"6-0, 178 and 13 Now if you want<lb/>
the real story on Hank Cooper, seeing<lb/>
has to be believing. Off the field as well<lb/>
as on.<lb/>
Cooper, a native of Smyrna, Ga has<lb/>
had a rocky, but successful career as a<lb/>
Pirate.<lb/>
"I came into the program in 1991<lb/>
in the Peach Bowl year and I was red<lb/>
shirted. So I didn't get to play, but you<lb/>
can say I've been fortunate, being a part<lb/>
of three bowl teams in the five years<lb/>
that I've been here said Cooper.<lb/>
That's right. This wilt be the third<lb/>
bowi season for Cooper in his ECU ca-<lb/>
reer, but if all goes well, this will be<lb/>
Cooper's first time actually playing in<lb/>
a bowl. As said earlier Cooper was red<lb/>
shirted the Peach Bowl season, and it<lb/>
looked as if in '94 he would see action<lb/>
in Memphis until injury struck. After<lb/>
playing the first eight games, and start-<lb/>
ing in six of those contests, Cooper tore<lb/>
ligaments in his left knee during a play<lb/>
in a Liberty Bowl alliance bout with Cin-<lb/>
cinnati in Greenville.<lb/>
"It frustrated me not being able to<lb/>
play the last three games of the season<lb/>
and then miss the Bowl game, but I<lb/>
didn't let it get me down said Coo-<lb/>
per.<lb/>
Cooper was having a solid year reg-<lb/>
istering forty-four tackles, thirty of<lb/>
them solos, along with two intercep-<lb/>
tions. To say the least, Cooper lived up<lb/>
to his description of being one of the<lb/>
best open field tacklers on the team,<lb/>
upping his career totals to 108 total<lb/>
tackles along with five interceptions and<lb/>
one and a half sacks.<lb/>
"The season started out good with<lb/>
the exception of the loss to Duke, said<lb/>
Cooper. "When I was told that I was<lb/>
out for the rest of the season, I knew I<lb/>
just had to get back to work and try to<lb/>
get where I could contribute again<lb/>
Cooper added.<lb/>
It was David Hart who got the start-<lb/>
ing nod in place of Cooper, as the Pi-<lb/>
rates made it to the St. Jude's Liberty<lb/>
Bowl only to lose to Illinois 30-0.<lb/>
Despite the fact that Cooper missed<lb/>
his opportunity to face the lllini in Mem-<lb/>
phis his Junior season, Hank found him-<lb/>
self in a position to step up against prac-<lb/>
tically the same Illinois team this year<lb/>
in the regular season. Although the 7-0<lb/>
battle with the lllini went the other way,<lb/>
Cooper got his shot at the defending<lb/>
Liberty Bowl champs. Cooper took full<lb/>
advantage of his opportunity by mak-<lb/>
ing big plays, including two key inter-<lb/>
ceptions that kept the Pirates in the ball<lb/>
game on the road.<lb/>
"When we played at Illinois, I<lb/>
wanted to play well seeing that I missed<lb/>
the Bowl, but more than anything, I<lb/>
wanted us to win cause it's another sea-<lb/>
son Cooper commented.<lb/>
With the Pirates acceptance of the<lb/>
invitation to the 1995 Liberty Bowl this<lb/>
Saturday, it will be a special time. Along<lb/>
with it being Senior Day, and Cooper's<lb/>
last game in Dowdy- Fickien Stadium,<lb/>
it will also be a step closer to the Lib-<lb/>
erty Bowl and playing on national tele-<lb/>
vision, which is something Cooper en-<lb/>
joys.<lb/>
"Well, I'm excited because it is a<lb/>
bowl game, but more than that it'll be<lb/>
on television Cooper said. "Being<lb/>
from the Atlanta area, most of my fam-<lb/>
ily and friends have never seen me play.<lb/>
So, when we play in Memphis they'll<lb/>
get to finally get to see me play at the<lb/>
college level added Cooper.<lb/>
After the cheers have died down<lb/>
from Cooper's football career, Hank as-<lb/>

Boothe bowls over competition<lb/>
Cralg Perrott<lb/>
End Zone Writer<lb/>
At 6-foot-7, and 284 pounds, Charles<lb/>
Boothe towers above his competition. Since<lb/>
coming to ECU as a tight end in 1991,<lb/>
Boothe has gained 80 of those pounds. That<lb/>
could be credited to Boothe's father, who<lb/>
owns some bakeries in his hometown of Ft.<lb/>
Lauderdale. He is an impressive sight on<lb/>
the gridiron, using his size and leverage to<lb/>
dominate Pirate opponents.<lb/>
Boothe is a Pirate veteran that has seen<lb/>
his share of success. He, like his redshirt<lb/>
senior teammates, has been a part of three<lb/>
bowl games in his five year career with this<lb/>
year's Liberty bowl berth, and two consecu-<lb/>
tive winning seasons.<lb/>
"I'm just happy to be a part of it<lb/>
Boothe said. "I think as a team we've played<lb/>
great We've won the games we're supposed<lb/>
to, and we pulled out some tough games,<lb/>
like Syracuse<lb/>
Boothe went down with an ankle in-<lb/>
jury in that Syracuse game, and it has ag-<lb/>
gravated him all year.<lb/>
"I've had a lot of ups and downs be-<lb/>
cause of my injury, but the times I was in<lb/>
there I tried to play pretty good Boothe<lb/>
said.<lb/>
Fellow lineman Ron Suddith has also<lb/>
had a nagging ankle injury this year, and<lb/>
the offensive line for the Pirates has experi-<lb/>
enced some shuffling.<lb/>
"When me and Ronnie got hurt, we<lb/>
had other guys that stepped up and knew<lb/>
the system, so I don't think there was a fall-<lb/>
off Boothe said. "Depending on the de-<lb/>
fensive schemes, we stepped up to what we<lb/>
had to do. If we said we were going to throw<lb/>
it, or if we were going to come out and run<lb/>
it, I think we did pretty good and got better<lb/>
each week<lb/>
This week against Memphis, Boothe and<lb/>
the other Pirate frenchmen will face a 4-3<lb/>
front, new to the Tigers, due to the depar-<lb/>
ture of Memphis' defensive coordinator from<lb/>
last year. Memphis has been known in re-<lb/>
cent years to run a 50 defense.<lb/>
"They still run some 50 fronts with a<lb/>
flexed nose guard, but they basically run a<lb/>
bask 4-3 Boothe said.<lb/>
The Memphis game will mark Boothe's<lb/>
last home game as a senior. To him, the<lb/>
past five years have come and gone too<lb/>
quickly.<lb/>
"To tell you the truth, I can't believe<lb/>
it's here. It seems like not too long ago I<lb/>
was just coming in here and unpacking my<lb/>
stuff for my first year. It was the quickest<lb/>
five years I've ever seen<lb/>
Boothe has seen action at three differ-<lb/>
ent positions during his tenure at ECU, com-<lb/>
ing in as a tight end, being moved to defen-<lb/>
sive end and finally to offensive tackle last<lb/>
year.<lb/>
"I've played about 60 positions, it's<lb/>
been pretty bad Boothe said.<lb/>
Boothe is looking forward to returning<lb/>
to the Liberty Bowl this year, and is hopeful<lb/>
that the outcome will be different this time<lb/>
around.<lb/>
"We started the season with unfinished<lb/>
business, now we have a chance to finish it.<lb/>
Hopefully, we can go to Memphis and win it<lb/>
this time<lb/>
Boothe was one of the few left that<lb/>
were a part of the Cinderella 1991 Peach<lb/>
Bowl season. But looking back, the two<lb/>
consecutive Liberty Bowl appearances mean<lb/>
more than that championship won in Atlanta.<lb/>
"The Peach Bowl was great, you know,<lb/>
but it's different when you're standing on<lb/>
Charles Boothe<lb/>
the sidelines. When you're actually out there<lb/>
playing, it's a whole different experience<lb/>
Interesting Pirate Fact:<lb/>
Boothe was recruited by Cincinnati and Kan-<lb/>
sas. He turned down Cinci because it was in<lb/>
the city, and he wanted to stay out of trouble<lb/>
and the negative influence of city life. And<lb/>
Kansas?<lb/>
"It was just too far Boothe says with<lb/>
a 284 pound smile.<lb/>

Oldham reflects on Pirate football<lb/>
Brad Oldham<lb/>
End Zone Writer<lb/>
After covering Pirate football the<lb/>
last three years and attending the games<lb/>
the last four, this Saturday's final home<lb/>
game will be on the list of special last<lb/>
events as my senior year winds dcwn.<lb/>
Yes, people actually do finally<lb/>
graduate from this school, so as the fi-<lb/>
nal week of the regular season dwindles<lb/>
down to a couple of days, I've decided<lb/>
to take a look at the roller coaster ride<lb/>
that ECU football has been on over my<lb/>
last four seasons here.<lb/>
As a high school senior in 1991, I<lb/>
knew I wanted to attend a college that<lb/>
had a good football team, among other<lb/>
things. Nobody wants to be associated<lb/>
with a loser, so I have no problem ad-<lb/>
mitting that ECU'S 11-1 record that sea-<lb/>
son, as well as a Peach Bowl champion-<lb/>
ship had a pretty strong influence on<lb/>
my attending this school.<lb/>
I was actually lucky enough to make<lb/>
it down here that year and watch such<lb/>
stars as Jeff Blake and Robert Jones<lb/>
work their magic on the field. They<lb/>
played Akron that day, and won 56-20.<lb/>
It was a homecoming, I had never tail-<lb/>
gated before, and I went downtown to<lb/>
celebrate later that night. "Where do I<lb/>
sign?" I said to myself.<lb/>
I applied and got accepted early,<lb/>
giving me a jump on which residence<lb/>
hall to live in. I chose Scott Hall, which<lb/>
put me right in the middle of the foot-<lb/>
ball atmosphere. I moved in August, and<lb/>
was ready to experience ECU football<lb/>
as a true Pirate.<lb/>
I even remember how excited I was<lb/>
that first week, when brand new Head<lb/>
Coach Steve Logan sent me a letter in<lb/>
the mail explaining how valuable fan loy-<lb/>
alty was from students throughout the<lb/>
season. Sure, every other person at this<lb/>
school got the same letter, but hey, I<lb/>
was a freshman, and was just happy to<lb/>
be getting mail.<lb/>
I went to UBE, bought the brand<lb/>
new T-shirts and ECU hats, and pre-<lb/>
pared for the ESPN Thursday match-up<lb/>
on ESPN versus Syracuse. The drama<lb/>
was intense all week as Greenville and<lb/>
ECU prepared for the Orangemen. I<lb/>
don't know if they still do it or not, but<lb/>
a rebellious activity, I believe they<lb/>
termed "panty-raids was participated<lb/>
in by the male residence halls on cam-<lb/>
pus. I, of course, participated only to<lb/>
say that i had participated, among other<lb/>
things.<lb/>
Well, we lost bad to Syracuse, 42-<lb/>
21. That entire season was actually<lb/>
about as up-and-down as the dance floor<lb/>
at the Elbo was that year, another ac-<lb/>
tivity I participated in that crazy fresh-<lb/>
man year, among other things.<lb/>
The team ended up 5-6, not bad<lb/>
for a team restructured by a new coach<lb/>
and basically a new team after the many<lb/>
seniors departed after the dream sea-<lb/>
son the year before. '<lb/>
My sophomore year I crossed the<lb/>
line from fan to journalist as I began to<lb/>
cover ECU football for TEC and WZMB.<lb/>
One of the bright spots from the sea-<lb/>
son before, a young, maturing quarter-<lb/>
back named Michael Anderson was MIA.<lb/>
This meant that a fellow sophomore<lb/>
named Marcus Crandell, who sat next<lb/>
to me in Freshman & the University, was<lb/>
now a fellow sophomore who was given<lb/>
the task of leading this ECU football<lb/>
team. I always thought that Crandell was<lb/>
a real cool guy in class. He was very<lb/>
modest and soft-spoken. I began to re-<lb/>
ally know just how special he was as I<lb/>
began to cover him for the media. He<lb/>
showed as much character and compo-<lb/>
sition off the field as he showed poten-<lb/>
tial on the field. His first game, again<lb/>
against Syracuse and again on ESPN,<lb/>
he stole the hearts of ECU fans, mak-<lb/>
ing people ask Michael Who? as he led<lb/>
ECU in a valiant effort that culminated<lb/>
in defeat at the hands of the much tal-<lb/>
ented Orangemen.<lb/>
That's why it hurt so much the very<lb/>
next week, when Crandell's season was<lb/>
ended on a cheap shot, late hit, by some<lb/>
scrub on Central Florida's defense. This<lb/>
injury put an extreme amount of stress<lb/>
on Logan, who ended up using three<lb/>
different quarterbacks that season, end-<lb/>
ing a nightmarish 2-9 on the year. I defi-<lb/>
nitely picked the wrong season to be-<lb/>
gin to cover the Pirates, because the<lb/>
only positive aspects of the team I could<lb/>
talk about were the potential talent this<lb/>
squad had in seasons to come.<lb/>
My junior year, out of the dorms<lb/>
and into an apartment stocked with<lb/>
beer, among other things. Covering the<lb/>
Pirates became a bit easier, with early<lb/>
season victories over Southern Miss,<lb/>
and South Carolina. Life actually meant<lb/>
something again to the die-hard Pirate<lb/>
fans, you know, the ones who actually<lb/>
know where the field is after tailgat-<lb/>
ing?<lb/>
Logan finally got his first winning<lb/>
season under his belt, finishing 7-5 and<lb/>
going to the Liberty Bowl.<lb/>
Well, this season, you could say, is<lb/>
the one Logan has been talking about<lb/>
ever since he came to ECU. This is the<lb/>
The ECU defensive line will butt heads with a Memphis offense lead<lb/>
by receiver Ryan Roskelly. The Pirate "D" will be up to the task,<lb/>
year he has all veteran players and fi- careers.<lb/>
nally has veteran leadership at ail posi-<lb/>
tions. My fellow seniors Mark Libiano,<lb/>
Morris Foreman, Kevin Wiggins, Jerris<lb/>
McPhail, Charles Boothe, Dwight<lb/>
Linville, Aaron Black, Walter Scott,<lb/>
Hank Cooper, Emmanuel McDaniel,<lb/>
David Crumble and others have weath-<lb/>
ered the bad times in return for two<lb/>
great seasons to end their collegiate<lb/>
This is the year that everybody is<lb/>
truly happy to be a Pirate. We're going<lb/>
to a second Liberty Bowl, and I'm sure<lb/>
that years after I've left this campus for<lb/>
good, when fresh young journalists come<lb/>
in and replace the old geezers such as<lb/>
myself, the success of ECU football will<lb/>
result in great parties in Greenville down<lb/>
the road, among other things.<lb/>

Dear ECU Students:<lb/>
First, to those students who were in Dowdy-Rcklen Stadium last Saturday for the ECU<lb/>
vs Tulsa game, thank you for your loyalty, support and special effort to be in the stands<lb/>
for your football team You were a part of a fun afternoon and something special for your<lb/>
university.<lb/>
Last Saturday, your Pirates secured their second consecutive bowl game. This Saturday,<lb/>
your Pirates can earn an 8-3 record, are shooting for a Top 25 national ranking, an<lb/>
undefeated home season, and their first shut-out in since 1982. You can be a part of<lb/>
making this happen by being in your seats 20 minutes prior to the game, on your feet for<lb/>
the team entrance, get loud for ever' third down play by the opposing team, and cheer<lb/>
your fellow students on the football team on until the final hom.<lb/>
Realizing that Thanksgiving break begins this weekend, it will be easy for you to attend<lb/>
the game. The dorms will be open until Sunday, so whether you live on or off campus<lb/>
you can come to the game and still have a whole week's vacation with family. An<lb/>
exciting day is planned Saturday. It includes a band in the Tailgate lot before the game,<lb/>
honoring the senior football players, and a post-game Liberty Bowl invitation ceremony<lb/>
in the stadium.<lb/>
This football team is a special group of young men who deserve to play in front of a full<lb/>
stadium Saturday and 20,000 Pirate fans in the Liberty Bowl. This Saturday will be<lb/>
another special and exciting day for all who are in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.<lb/>
GET IN THE STANDS EARLY, BE PROUD, and GET LOUD!<lb/>

The End Zone<lb/>
East meets west in Liberty Bowl<lb/>
Brad Oldham<lb/>
End Zone Writer<lb/>
This year's 1995 St. Jude Liberty Bowl<lb/>
involves two teams that have about as much<lb/>
in common as the oceans they border on.<lb/>
First off, you have the ECU Pirates, a<lb/>
team that has been dying to get back to this<lb/>
Liberty Bowl ever since the last second<lb/>
ticked off the clock on December 31st,<lb/>
1994, after Illinois demolished them in front<lb/>
of a nationally televised audience, 30-0. The<lb/>
entire spring practice, pre-season, and regu-<lb/>
lar season has all led them to a unified goal<lb/>
of returning to Memphis to claim what was<lb/>
swiped out of the air from them the year<lb/>
before.<lb/>
"Unfinished Business" has been the<lb/>
resounding theme this year for head coach<lb/>
Steve Logan and his troops, and they are<lb/>
just one game away from finishing the busi-<lb/>
ness at hand.<lb/>
The Stanford Cardinal, however, had<lb/>
nowhere to go but up this season, as they<lb/>
were predicted to finish last in the Padfic-<lb/>
10 Conference by just about every publica-<lb/>
tion. They had a brand new coach in Tyrone<lb/>
Willingham, and questions were being asked<lb/>
about how he would lead this program af-<lb/>
ter former head coach Bill Walsh split town.<lb/>
Well, the Cardinal proved the experts<lb/>
wrong, as they turned in one of the best<lb/>
regular seasons in school history at 7-3-1.<lb/>
They finished fourth in the Pac-10 with a 5-<lb/>
Stephanie<lb/>
Lassiter<lb/>

Celeste Wilson<lb/>

Manager<lb/>
Brad Oldham<lb/>

3 conference record, and Willingham went<lb/>
on to win the Pac-10 Conference Coach of<lb/>
the Year award, an accomplishment that had<lb/>
been achieved only one other time in school<lb/>
history, when Walsh won in 1977.<lb/>
The Cardinal started off the season with<lb/>
a 4-0-1 record, the best beginning in 44<lb/>
years for Stanford. Big wins over Oregon<lb/>
and Arizona State made the Pac-10 stop in<lb/>
their tracks as Stanford looked to be the<lb/>
Cinderella team of the west. The bubble<lb/>
burst in the middle of the year for the Car-<lb/>
dinal as they dropped three out of their next<lb/>
four games, to Washington, UCLA, and USC,<lb/>
arguably the best three teams in the Pac-<lb/>
10.<lb/>
Stanford ended the season with back<lb/>
to back wins against Washington State and<lb/>
California, and waited for their post-season<lb/>
destiny in the ever-confusing and unpredict-<lb/>
able world of bowl bids.<lb/>
When the announcement was made on<lb/>
Sunday, November 27th that Stanford would<lb/>
be traveling to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl<lb/>
to face ECU, it marked an ironic twist that<lb/>
while Pirate fans had waited an entire year<lb/>
to get to the Liberty Bowl, Cardinal fans<lb/>
considered this a dream come true to make<lb/>
it to any bowl following the bleak year that<lb/>
was foreshadowed upon them by the so-<lb/>
called experts.<lb/>
So now that both teams have a month<lb/>
to prepare for each other, what will they<lb/>
look to exploit in one another? Both coaches<lb/>
will admit that they're fairly unfamiliar with<lb/>
anything at all about the other's team. And<lb/>
why shouldn't they be? ECU and Stanford<lb/>
have never played before. Heck, Stanford<lb/>
has only played a team from North Carolina<lb/>
twice in their history, that being Duke both<lb/>
times. Plus, the distance between schools<lb/>
prevents ?ny real media coverage inform-<lb/>
ing either coach about the other team.<lb/>
And let's face ita Big East team was<lb/>
supposed to be playing us anyway, so there's<lb/>
no way that Logan could of had any idea<lb/>
he would be playing such an odd-ball choice<lb/>
as Stanford.<lb/>
As bad as Stanford was supposed to<lb/>
have been prior to the 1995 season, they<lb/>
still managed to get 13 players honored for<lb/>
All-Pac-10 awards. Three of these were First-<lb/>
Team selections.<lb/>
The first is senior left tackle Jeff<lb/>
Buckley, who at 6-5,300 pounds, heads up<lb/>
an experienced offense made up exclusively<lb/>
of juniors and seniors, ranging from 270-<lb/>
303 pounds.<lb/>
The second is senior place-kicker Eric<lb/>
Abrams, who will likely win the Lou Groza<lb/>
Award for the best kicker in the country.<lb/>
Abrams set two school records in '95 for<lb/>
points scored and PATs. He hit 16-of-18 field<lb/>
goals this season for an extremely solid 89<lb/>
percentage, the best single season average<lb/>
in Stanford history. Abrams has led Stanford<lb/>
in scoring for each of the past four seasons.<lb/>
If this year's Bowl game ends up anything<lb/>
like the Peach Bowl game did against N.C.<lb/>
State a few years back, the possibility of<lb/>
putting Abrams in for a do-or-die field goal<lb/>
might be money in the bank for the Cardi-<lb/>
nal.<lb/>
The last First-Team selection for<lb/>
Stanford this season is kickoff-returner<lb/>
Damon Dunn, who in just his sophomore<lb/>
season became the school's first all-league<lb/>
return specialist since 1987.<lb/>
That large offensive line mentioned<lb/>
earlier will benefit Stanford's Second-Team<lb/>
All-Pac-10 quarterback, senior Mark<lb/>
Butterfield. Butterfield was "the little en-<lb/>
gine that could" of this season's squad, as<lb/>
he took four seasons of bench-warming ex-<lb/>
perience to the table prior to this season in<lb/>
trying to win a starting nod from the rookie<lb/>
head coach. Butterfield did battle with jun-<lb/>
ior Tim Carey before earning the starting<lb/>
spot, which wasn't even dedded until a week<lb/>
before the season opener with San Jose<lb/>
State.<lb/>
Butterfield completed 194 of 333<lb/>
passes for a 58 percent passing percent-<lb/>
age, with 2,533 yards, nine interceptions,<lb/>
and 19 TD's.<lb/>
The running game is anchored by<lb/>
sophomore Second-Team All-Pac-10 selec-<lb/>
tion Anthony Bookman, who gained 872<lb/>
yards on the year, induding four 100-yard<lb/>
rushing games.<lb/>
Just as there's no letter "s" on the end<lb/>
of the team mascot Cardinal, there really<lb/>
should be no "D" at the end of Stanford,<lb/>
because the team lacks both depth and tal-<lb/>
ent on the flip side of the ball.<lb/>
The Cardinal ranks ninth in the Pac-10<lb/>
in total defense, giving up an average of<lb/>
26.2 points per game, as well as an incred-<lb/>
ible 412.6 a game average total yards. If<lb/>
there's one area that Logan and his team<lb/>
can exploit, its the Stanford defense.<lb/>
The lone bright spot on the Stanford<lb/>
defense is the inside linebacker duo of se-<lb/>
nior Mike Hall and sophomore Chris Draft.<lb/>
Hall leads the team with 182 tackles over<lb/>
the last two seasons, and has started 22<lb/>
straight games at ILB. Draft finished sixth<lb/>
in the conference with 103 tackles.<lb/>
ECU senior running back Jerris McPhail<lb/>
could have a huge game, considering the<lb/>
Cardinal gives up 184 yards rushing a game.<lb/>
Look for Crandell to exploit the Stanford<lb/>
defense both on the long and short passes.<lb/>
The way to look at this game without<lb/>
getting technical about the little things is to<lb/>
simply match-up both team's offenses and<lb/>
defenses in general.<lb/>
It's fairly obvious that our offense is<lb/>
much better than their defense. If the of-<lb/>
fense that shows up December 30th is the<lb/>
one that we saw against teams such as Syra-<lb/>
cuse and West Virginia, instead of the of-<lb/>
fense that showed up against Cincinnati and<lb/>
some of the other games in the middle of<lb/>
the season, when the Pirate defense dearly<lb/>
carried this ball-dub.<lb/>
Speaking of the Pirate defense, match<lb/>
them up against the talented Stanford of-<lb/>
fense and it's a harder call to make as far<lb/>
as which way the scale is leaning. Obviously,<lb/>
if this Pirate defense steps up like it has<lb/>
pretty much all season, especially seniors<lb/>
such as Morris Foreman and Mark Libiano,<lb/>
the chances of us matching up to<lb/>
Willingham's offense looks pretty good.<lb/>
And finally, and maybe the most im-<lb/>
portant factor above anything else, is the<lb/>
motivational issue. The true drive and de-<lb/>
termination that has lingered in the hearts<lb/>
of all the returning ECU players from last<lb/>
year's squad has catapulted them into the<lb/>
position of taking back what they lost last<lb/>
year. Sure, they've gone to the Liberty Bowl<lb/>
two years straight now, but without a win in<lb/>
either game, twenty years from now, who's<lb/>
going to remember?<lb/>

No doubt about it, ECU is heading to<lb/>
Memphis this year with something differ-<lb/>
ent in mind this year.<lb/>
Many players admit last year they re-<lb/>
ally didn't have football as their first prior-<lb/>
ity. They were Just happy to have gotten<lb/>
that far last season.<lb/>
Senior linebacker Morris Foreman<lb/>
admits that the team was enthusiastic about<lb/>
being in Memphis, but not for all the right<lb/>
reasons.<lb/>
"Last year was more of a celebration<lb/>
said Foreman. "We went down there to<lb/>
have fun. We wanted to win, but when we<lb/>
came out on game day there was no focus<lb/>
there and we knew that, and we didn't<lb/>
come out to play football<lb/>
For most players, last season's trip to<lb/>
Memphis was their first bowl game ever.<lb/>
For a few veterans, this was their second<lb/>
post-season game. Many of those same<lb/>
players who played on the 1991 Peach<lb/>
Bowl team and the 1994 Liberty Bowl,<lb/>
will be heading to their third bowl game of<lb/>
the year. So they know the importance of<lb/>
keeping their cool in pressure situations.<lb/>
Needless to say last year's bowl de-<lb/>
feat was heart breakingTor all the players,<lb/>
but many of those first year players were<lb/>
just excited to be there and their frame of<lb/>
mind wasn't necessarily on football.<lb/>
Consequently the teams motto this<lb/>
season has been "unfinished business<lb/>
Scott Richards knew this year's team<lb/>
the '94 Liberty Bowl loss on their mind at<lb/>
the start of this season.<lb/>
"We put on our shirts 'unfinished busi-<lb/>
ness' and we decided that was what we<lb/>
were going to work for all year said<lb/>
Richards.<lb/>
ECU hopes to go to Memphis and fin-<lb/>
ish that business and no team is going to<lb/>
stand in their way of what they are going<lb/>
there to come home with - a victory.<lb/>
"We're going to Memphis to win a<lb/>
game and it doesn't matter who the oppo-<lb/>
nent is said linebacker B.J. Crane. "If<lb/>
the Cardinal happen to be there so be it -<lb/>
our goals don't change<lb/>
The task of making it back to the Lib-<lb/>
erty Bowl for the second consecutive sea-<lb/>
son has not been easy. It's been a tough<lb/>
road, but one that has been well traveled.<lb/>
After a brutal Sept. schedule, which in-<lb/>
cluded Tennessee, Syracuse, Central Michi-<lb/>
gan, Illinois and West Virginia, the Pirates<lb/>
came out on top posting a 3-2 record. Most<lb/>
predicted that ECU would not come out<lb/>
that well, but the Pirates wanted to prove<lb/>
their skills from the very beginning this<lb/>
season.<lb/>
"We've had some tough opponents,<lb/>
but we came out strong and I think that is<lb/>
what is important said Richards. "We fin-<lb/>
ished this season getting better and bet-<lb/>
ter week-to-week<lb/>
The Pirates did improve ail the way<lb/>
to an 8-3 record. Since the Pirates do<lb/>
have some recent bowl experience behind<lb/>
them they will hopefully be able to handle<lb/>
the hype that goes along with bowl games.<lb/>
"We're much older now and we know<lb/>
how to handle that said Foreman.<lb/>
Quarterback Marcus Crandell, is<lb/>
proud of the way ECU has played this year,<lb/>
and the way they have stuck to their guns<lb/>
and accomplished what they set out to<lb/>
prove at the beginning of the year.<lb/>
"We set the goals at the beginning<lb/>
of the season and now it's happening<lb/>
said Crandell. "Right now we have to fo-<lb/>
cus on what we have to do to win and<lb/>
how we are going to do that<lb/>
Back-to-back winning seasons will<lb/>
also help the Pirates' momentum going<lb/>
into the Liberty Bowl, and should help<lb/>
seniors focus more on the last game of<lb/>
their career.<lb/>
Crandell adds that this season should<lb/>
be especially good for those seniors be-<lb/>
cause they helped contribute in ECU'S per-<lb/>
fect 5-0 home record. He believes the play-<lb/>
ers, fans and university should be proud<lb/>
of their accomplishments and hard work<lb/>
put forth by all members of the team.<lb/>

Special teams under "the gun<lb/>
II<lb/>
Dill Dillard<lb/>
Staff Writer<lb/>
When an average football fan hears<lb/>
the term "special teams many foot-<lb/>
ball fans think of the kicker and the<lb/>
punter. To a football coach the special<lb/>
teams are just that"special You'll<lb/>
hear time and time again how vital spe-<lb/>
cial teams are to a football team during<lb/>
this Liberty bowl season when the Pi-<lb/>
rates take on evenly matched Stanford,<lb/>
Dec. 30.<lb/>
Now if you want to talk ECU spe-<lb/>
cial teams, E.J. Gunthrope's name will<lb/>
pop up nine times out of 10.<lb/>
Gunthrope, a 6-foot-2, 212 pound<lb/>
junior safety, is seeing his third year of<lb/>
action this year after being redshirted<lb/>
in his first season at ECU. Gunthrope,<lb/>
a native of Winston-Salem and Parkland<lb/>
High School, chose ECU over other<lb/>
nearby programs.<lb/>
"I really liked the people and sur-<lb/>
roundings when I visited here, and I had<lb/>
some friends that were already here<lb/>
said Gunthrope.<lb/>
Coincidentaily, fellow defensive<lb/>
backs and Winston-Salem natives David<lb/>
and Daren Hart were some of the friends<lb/>
of Gunthrope that he spoke of that were<lb/>
Greenville bound out of high school.<lb/>
Despite the fact Gunthrope has<lb/>
never been looked to as far as a start-<lb/>
ing role goes, Gunthrope has certainly<lb/>
made his impression in his three years<lb/>
of play. In his first eligible year, "the<lb/>
Gun" saw action in nine games followed<lb/>
by an outstanding '94 season capped<lb/>
off by being named Outstanding Spe-<lb/>
cial Teams Player of the Year by the<lb/>
coaching staff.<lb/>
"I feel that special teams is one of<lb/>
the most important parts of the game<lb/>
Gunthrope added. "Most people don't<lb/>
take special teams seriously and don't<lb/>
really pay attention to it. Like the big-<lb/>
ger schools, they feel it's insignificant,<lb/>
but special teams win and lose ball<lb/>
games for us ended Gunthrope.<lb/>
After three years of playing a re-<lb/>
serve and special teams role, for<lb/>
Gunthrope, this year has been no dif-<lb/>
ferent. Once again Gunthrope has been<lb/>
a mainstay for the Bucs in special teams<lb/>
tackles for most of this year, and is im-<lb/>
proving every game.<lb/>
"I've definitely seen improvement<lb/>
in my game from my first year here,<lb/>
especially on special teams said<lb/>
Gunthrope. "The past two years I've<lb/>
worked on skills that wouid enable me<lb/>
to contribute Gunthrope added.<lb/>
As many Pirate fans have noticed<lb/>
not only the special teams have im-<lb/>
proved, but the ECU defense has also<lb/>
improved as a whole.<lb/>
"Oh, I have definitely seen an im-<lb/>
provement in our defense since I've<lb/>
been here. Coach (Steve) Logan has<lb/>
brought in some of the best coaches in<lb/>
the country here to ECU and it has<lb/>
helped the team a lot said Gunthrope.<lb/>
As vital as depth is in a defensive<lb/>
backfield, Gunthrope feels that he could<lb/>
see more time as a safety in the future.<lb/>
"I've worked hard on my game and<lb/>
going into the bowl game all the way<lb/>
into my senior season, I'm sure because<lb/>
of my improvement I'll have to be ready<lb/>
to go as a safety added Gunthrope.<lb/>
Gunthrope, an exercise and sports<lb/>
science major, has ambitions of becom-<lb/>
ing a school principal. Looking at<lb/>
Gunthrope's past present and future as<lb/>
a Pirate, it is plain to see that he sticks<lb/>
to the quote he lives by: "Good things<lb/>

It's not easy having a brother, much<lb/>
less a twin.<lb/>
in last year's Liberty Bowl, David Hart<lb/>
won the Defensive Player-of-the-Came<lb/>
Award. Now, a year later, he's stiil hang-<lb/>
ing it over his brother's head.<lb/>
"I hear it all the time. 'You did this,<lb/>
but who got the trophy? Daren Hart said.<lb/>
"He's got it sitting in our room, and it<lb/>
ain't small, it's a big trophy. I would love<lb/>
to have a trophy to put beside his so he<lb/>
won't have that bragging right, but I al-<lb/>
ways tell people that I had more tackles<lb/>
that game. I had 15 and he had 12<lb/>
"I felt good for him, though, because<lb/>
he brought the award to the house, so to<lb/>
speak<lb/>
David may have the trophy, but Daren<lb/>
dominates the stat books. The 5-10, 195<lb/>
lb. safety is second on the team in tack-<lb/>
les with 91 and has four sacks this sea-<lb/>
son. He also has three interceptions this<lb/>
year, including a 15-yard interception re-<lb/>
turn against Central Michigan. In the Illi-<lb/>
nois contest this season, Daren set single-<lb/>
game superlatives for the team with 20<lb/>
total tackles and 12 initial stops. Daren,<lb/>
a native of Winston-Salem, considers him-<lb/>
self a motivator that carries with himself<lb/>
a positve attitude and a will full of deter-<lb/>
mination.<lb/>
"I just try to be consistent and do my<lb/>
job Daren said. "I just make the plays<lb/>
that come to me. The coaching staff is<lb/>
beginning to believe in me, and put me<lb/>
in the position where I can make big<lb/>
plays<lb/>
The defense has kept the Pirates in<lb/>
every game they have played this season.<lb/>
In years past, it has been the offensive<lb/>
unit that has bailed out the defense. With<lb/>
this reversal of roles, Daren realizes that<lb/>
no matter what happens, the defense must<lb/>
keep playing hard and pick up the slack<lb/>
when necessary.<lb/>
 Dar DefensivS&Ud<lb/>
en Hart e stats Total 91INT 31 Sacks 4<lb/>

"When the offense wasn't playing<lb/>
well, the defense stood behind them and<lb/>
said 'you were there for us when East<lb/>
Carolina used to score a lot of points and<lb/>
the defense was struggling, so we're go-<lb/>
ing to be there for you now It all evened<lb/>
out in the end<lb/>
If the offense plays poorly, and the<lb/>
defense can't get started, then the Pirates<lb/>
rely on their special teams to carry the<lb/>
load.<lb/>
"It's three phases to the game, and<lb/>
we go out and try to win at least two of<lb/>
them. If we do that, we usually come out<lb/>
on top<lb/>
The 1995 Liberty Bowl will feature a<lb/>
different ECU team than last year's out-<lb/>
ing. It is a Pirate squad that is more fo-<lb/>
cused and intent on accomplishing their<lb/>
"unfinished business The team was ex-<lb/>
tremely lax last year in Memphis, but the<lb/>
fun and games will be cut out this time<lb/>
around in an effort to achieve their goals.<lb/>
"The difference between this year and<lb/>
last year is we expect to win. We've been<lb/>
there before, and we go out thinking that<lb/>
we're better than the other teams. If we<lb/>
lose, we're disappointed<lb/>
Last year ECU was soundly defeated<lb/>
by Illinois 30-0. It is a score that has been<lb/>
on the minds of players, coaches and fans<lb/>
for the past 12 months. The Pirates are<lb/>
more experienced this year, and are yearn-<lb/>
ing to bring home a Liberty Bowl Cham-<lb/>
pionship.<lb/>
"We're not going down there to lose<lb/>
two in a row Daren said. "Our offensive<lb/>
players are picking it up because they<lb/>
think nobody can shut them out. It's go-<lb/>
ing to be a good game<lb/>
ECU will face a Stanford offense that<lb/>
can put a lot of points on the board.<lb/>
"We watched the film of the Califor-<lb/>
nia game, and we think their going to try<lb/>
to run the ball and establish a running<lb/>
game against us Daren said. "Hopefully<lb/>
we can get them into their passing game,<lb/>
because we think we can take advantage<lb/>
of that situation<lb/>
Daren and David<lb/>
combined for 124<lb/>
tackles last year, and<lb/>
will be back in 1996<lb/>
as seniors to hope-<lb/>
fully lead the Pirates<lb/>
back to a third con-<lb/>
secutive Liberty Bowl<lb/>
appearance.<lb/>
"I love the<lb/>
game, and all I'm<lb/>
about, in any situa-<lb/>
tion, is winning. I<lb/>
don't care how we do<lb/>
it<lb/>

"On the road again. I can't wait to get<lb/>
on the road again I'm up for taking<lb/>
Willie's advice and once againg heading to<lb/>
Memphis.<lb/>
A lot of students think the 15-hour<lb/>
drive to Memphis is too much, especially<lb/>
considering last year's disappointing out-<lb/>
come, but it's a new year and a new team<lb/>
with a new philosophy. Besides, did you<lb/>
get to see everything there is to see in<lb/>
Memphis last year?<lb/>
Go ahead a book your room for a few<lb/>
extra nights because there is a lot to do in<lb/>
Memphis and you might as well make a<lb/>
vacation out of it. Spring break is a long<lb/>
ways away.<lb/>
Graceland is a iust. Yes, Chip, ECU<lb/>
fans will go to Graceland. Elvis was a Pi-<lb/>
rate, ya' know? For the tow price of $9<lb/>
you can see Elvis' 15-foot yellow vinyl<lb/>
couch, his burial site (next to his twin<lb/>
brother's), his Taking-Care-of-Business-in-<lb/>
a-Flash diamond ring, his gaudy Jumpsuits<lb/>
and his never ending walls of Golden<lb/>
Records.<lb/>
But, that's not all. Graceland will be<lb/>
decorated for Christmas just as Elvis deco-<lb/>
rated it prior to his death in the '70s. The<lb/>
blue lights strewn across the lawn will take<lb/>
you down memory lane to when you were<lb/>
a wee little one helping mom decorate the<lb/>
snow-flocked artificial pine.<lb/>
If you want to see EMs' plane, the<lb/>
Lisa-Marie, it'll cost a little more, but isn't<lb/>
it worth it to see a bed with seat belts?<lb/>
So maybe you aren't the biggest Elvis<lb/>
fan. Try heading toward Mississippi to try<lb/>
your hand at gambling. To enter you must<lb/>
be 21 years old.Turt the drinks are free -<lb/>
it's a cleaver method for getting you to<lb/>
drop more coins into the slot machine. If<lb/>
you hang around the Roulette tables you'll<lb/>
begin to see why people jump off bridges<lb/>
and throw themselves in front of 18-wheel-<lb/>
ers. Gambling is the quickest way to lose a<lb/>
lot of money and to run yourself into bank-<lb/>
ruptcy.<lb/>
The trip to Mississippi seems like<lb/>
something out of a horror movie. The 30-<lb/>
something-mile trip is long and never end-<lb/>
ing thanks to the dark, empty fields along<lb/>
the straight road. You'll half expect Freddy<lb/>
to jump out in front of your vehicle, but<lb/>
just when you think you'll never get there,<lb/>
bright lights will illuminate the sky. Lady<lb/>
Luck, Harrah's and Circus Circus neon signs<lb/>
will invite you to the land of lost dollars.<lb/>
It's another world, one worth at least an<lb/>
hour's time.<lb/>
You can't leave Memphis without<lb/>
checking out the ducks at the Peabody.<lb/>
True, the Peabody was the scene to Tom<lb/>
Cruise's first dealings with the firm in The<lb/>
Firm, but the ducks are what the Peabody's<lb/>
really about. Twice daily, at 11 a.m. and 5<lb/>
p.m the Peabody ducks march on red<lb/>
carpet to the tune of "King Cotten March<lb/>
It's such a big attraction that the Peabody<lb/>
has a restaurant named Mallard's and their<lb/>
official logo is the duck.<lb/>
Last year, the owner of Silky<lb/>
O'Sullivan's bar on Beale Street was so<lb/>
enthused with the Pirates that he offered<lb/>
a pail of a specially concocted purple bev-<lb/>
erage. Pirate fans turned out in droves for<lb/>
the colorful, tasty drink. In fact, Silky's<lb/>
was so packed with Pirate fans that I just<lb/>
hung around outside the bar. Butthisyear,<lb/>
I think I'll try to make my way in<lb/>
If a 15-hour trip is too long for you<lb/>
and your pals to make in one day, take a<lb/>
rest. Pigeon Forye is the home to Dolly<lb/>
Parton and Dolly Wood. It's also an ideal<lb/>
place to spend some of that Christmas<lb/>
money Santa left in your stocking. It's the<lb/>
home to outlets, outlets and more outlets.<lb/>
If you would like to see a spectacular<lb/>
display of Christmas decor, stop in Nash-<lb/>
ville at the Opryland hotel. The grounds of<lb/>
the hotel are enough to leave you moan-<lb/>
ing and sighing for days, but the hotel's<lb/>
interior is also a must. Yes, a hotel's inte-<lb/>
rior is worth stopping to see. When my<lb/>
parents suggested it, I, too, was skeptical,<lb/>
but I'm glad I opted for the tourist attrac-<lb/>
tion and not a night cooped up in a hotel<lb/>
room with my folks. Visiting the hotel is<lb/>
free and it's something you won't see in<lb/>
Greenville. Besides, it makes a good rest<lb/>
ing place and you just might get the chance<lb/>
to see Reba, in case you miss Elvis al<lb/>
Graceland.<lb/>
Don't let this exciting travel opportu-<lb/>
nity pass you by. Get a group of friends,<lb/>
pile into someone's mom's wag and head<lb/>
to Memphis. Order your tickets today and<lb/>
support your Pirates. Let's show Stanford<lb/>
who really has the class and fill the stands<lb/>
