(ECU News Bureau) -<lb />
East Carolina University stu-<lb />

meningococcal meningitis<lb />
and has been hospitalized at<lb />
Pitt County Memorial Hospi-<lb />
tal.<lb />
The student, Iris Lee Th-<lb />
ompson, 18, is a freshman<lb />
from Woodbridge. Va. He is a<lb />
walk-on member of the ECU<lb />
football team who lives in the<lb />
Scott Residence Hall on cam-<lb />
pus.<lb />
University officials have<lb />
begun contacting other stu-<lb />
dents who may have been in<lb />
close contact with Thompson<lb />
for screening and for preven-<lb />
tive treatment if necessary.<lb />
The preventive treatment is<lb />
an oral antibiotic adminis-<lb />
tered for two days. The entire<lb />
football squad will be<lb />
screened.<lb />
Jolene Jernigan, clinical<lb />
coordinator at the ECU Stu-<lb />
dent Health Service, said the<lb />
disease - an inflammation of<lb />
the brain- is not highly con-<lb />
tagious.<lb />
It can be spread through<lb />
direct intimate contact, such<lb />
as sharing living space or eat-<lb />

Students who attended<lb />
class with Thompson would<lb />
not be considered to have<lb />
been in direct contact with<lb />
him, she said.<lb />
At his residence hall, stu-<lb />

would be treated as having di-<lb />

Symptoms of the disease<lb />

headache, skin rash, stiff neck<lb />
and vomiting.<lb />
"There are lots of viruses<lb />
going around right now that<lb />
have some of the same symp-<lb />

She said State Health De-<lb />

of people be screened for<lb />
signs of the disease: The en-<lb />
tire football team, including<lb />
coached and support staff:<lb />
Thompson's roommates and<lb />
close friends: a girlfriend or<lb />
any woman he dated since<lb />
Sept 30; and anyone whose<lb />
house he visited since Sept<lb />
30.<lb />
Jernigan said that screen-<lb />
ings swill begin at the Student<lb />
Health Service at 8:30 a.m.<lb />
Thursday. Individuals who are<lb />
concerned that they should<lb />
be screened are encouraged<lb />
to call the center at 32&6841.<lb />

A recent Budget Resolution<lb />

balancing the federal budget by 2002<lb />
will decrease the amount of money<lb />
available for federal student loan pro-<lb />
grams over the next seven years in an<lb />
attempt to save $10.4 billion.<lb />
The impact on students and edu-<lb />

particularly because the federal gov-<lb />

One-half of all students in public<lb />

ECU's campus<lb />
expressed con<lb />
cern over the im<lb />
plications these<lb />
proposed cuts<lb />
will have on ECU<lb />
students.<lb />
"ECU would<lb />
have to pay a tax on the student loans<lb />

Stelma said. "We<lb />

Tuition to be used<lb />

Marguerite Benjamin<lb />
Senior Writer<lb />
Despite the efforts of student<lb />
organizations and some concerned<lb />
university business officials, at least<lb />
two schools in the UNC system are<lb />
expecting a $400 tuition increase.<lb />
Various groups at North Caro-<lb />
lina State University (NCSU) and<lb />
the University of North Carolina at<lb />
Chapel Hill (UNC) have been try-<lb />
ing for months to dissuade their<lb />
schools' board of trustees from ap-<lb />
proving the hike in tuition that will<lb />
mainly be use d to increase faculty<lb />
salaries.<lb />
This summer, the RC. General<lb />
Assembly passed a law that would<lb />
allow the board of trustees oi the<lb />
two campuses to decide indepen-<lb />
dently whether or not the increase<lb />
was necessary.<lb />
If the plan to increase tuition<lb />
is to be enacted, the General Assem-<lb />
bly decreed, "at least 35 percent of<lb />
the funds collected from the in-<lb />
crease would go into financial aid.<lb />
The rest of the money would be used<lb />
for meritbased faculty salary in-<lb />
creases, library funding or both<lb />
The president of the University<lb />
of North Carolina System, CD.<lb />
Spangier, has received criticism<lb />
since the beginning of the negotia-<lb />
tions because he voiced opposition<lb />
to the increase.<lb />
"I cannot discern the ecoi imic<lb />
justice of taxing students to raise<lb />
faculty salaries Spanglev said. -In-<lb />
evitably this will build up animos-<lb />
ity<lb />
Spangier said the tuition in-<lb />
crease would be unfair to students<lb />
from lower income families, and that<lb />
the act would create a situation in<lb />
which wealthy students would pay<lb />
tuition while poor students would<lb />
be on a type of "educational wel-<lb />
fare<lb />
Spangier said he could not see<lb />
the logic in taxing students whose<lb />
average family income is in the<lb />
$40,000 range to increase the in-<lb />
come of faculty members who "in<lb />
some cases earn twice as much<lb />
Spangier faced the N.C. State<lb />
Board of Trustees with several sug-<lb />
gestions and alternatives to the tu-<lb />
ition increase.<lb />
He suggested petitioning the<lb />
General Assembly to provide fund-<lb />
ing for the increases in faculty sala-<lb />
ries which already stand at $70,000<lb />
for full professors at NCSU and at<lb />
$74,700 for UNC professors.<lb />
Other suggestions Spangier<lb />
made to the board included: ex-<lb />
empting students already on finan-<lb />
cial aid from the tuition increase,<lb />
not allowing the increase (if<lb />
passed) to be used to pay profes-<lb />

as we proceed<lb />
On the tuition increases at N.C. State and Chapel Hill<lb />
"1 was asked what my thoughts were about these increases tat the<lb />
Faculty Senate meeting) and I said then that I think the idea of tying<lb />
increases in student tuition to faculty salary increases is simply bad public<lb />
policy. I find that to be not a good idea in both the short and long run. In<lb />
the short run, 1 think it clearly, in this case, benefits two universities to the<lb />
exclusion of 14 others. The other 14 universities have faculty who have<lb />
salary needs and we have faculty who are leaving us because they can find<lb />
better opportunities elsewhere. I find it difficult to distinguish the faculty<lb />
salary needs at two universities from the other 14. In the long ran. I think<lb />
it sets a dangerous precedent in a state in which the public's responsibility<lb />
has been long understood in terms of funding higher education. Higher<lb />
education is stated in our constitution as being a very important thing that<lb />
should be provided at the least practical cost. This legislation is a falling<lb />
away from the state's responsibility to provide higher education at the least<lb />
practical cost"<lb />
On the state-wide budget cuts<lb />
"At one point in the budget process, it appeared there would be major<lb />
cuts in not only East Carolina's budget but in the entire 16 campus system.<lb />
During the course of the process, from my vantage point, cooler heads<lb />
prevailed and we did not receive clearly what we had hoped for and asked<lb />
for, but our cuts were minor in many areas and in some areas indeed we<lb />
even had a recognition of inflationary and other cost increases. We were<lb />
able to weather that storm at this university and across the system in a way<lb />
that will not cause us to have to reduce our commitment to students and<lb />
their education<lb />
On the opening of the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center<lb />
"I'm personally quite excited about the opening of that center. It seems<lb />
to me we have been able to give that center a home that it deserves on the<lb />
campus I always personally viewed the previous site as being a very tem-<lb />
porary arrangement that didn't seem to be reflective of the efforts we are<lb />
making in terms of cultural diversity and in terms of trying to expand the<lb />
cultural horizons of all of our students<lb />
AID from page 1<lb />
these changes include Pell Grants.<lb />
Perkins loans. State Student Incentive<lb />
Grants (SSIG), Stafford loans, small<lb />
federal scholarships, fe! .vships and<lb />
the Federal Direct Stud Loan Pro-<lb />
gram. Approximately six million stu-<lb />
dents benefited from these programs<lb />
in the 1993-94 year, according to a<lb />
report prepared by the American<lb />
Council on Education in August of<lb />
1995. The impact of the fiscal year<lb />
1996 Budget Resolution will therefore<lb />
be of immense importance to students<lb />
and educational institutions.<lb />
Those who will be hurt most by<lb />
these proposed measures include the<lb />
thousands of students who major in<lb />
fields such as nursing, teaching and<lb />
social work, which require higher edu-<lb />
cation but are not highly paid profes-<lb />
sions, the Alliance report stated.<lb />
The Alliance is an organization<lb />
dedicated to making students aware<lb />
of unfolding government events that<lb />
will affect their ability to receive an<lb />
education. In addition, they want to<lb />
mobilize students and educational in-<lb />
stitutions.<lb />
The Alliance to Save Student Aid<lb />
conducted a public opinion survey<lb />
in January of 1995 in which 89 per-<lb />
cent of Americans voted that help-<lb />
ing students financially is second<lb />
only to social security in importance.<lb />
These voters voiced the opinion that<lb />
decreasing student aid is an undesir-<lb />
able way to reduce the budget defi-<lb />
cit. Ninety-two percent voted that fi-<lb />
nancial aid for students is an impor-<lb />
tant investment in America's future.<lb />
Over two-thirds think that if some-<lb />
thing has to be cut in order to bal-<lb />
ance the budget deficit, the defense<lb />
program should be re-evaluated be-<lb />
fore taking a bite out of federal stu-<lb />
dent financial aid.<lb />
Direct Federal student loan pro-<lb />
grams are also under fire by con-<lb />
gress. ECU does not participate in<lb />
the direct student loan program but<lb />
will still be affected by its elimina-<lb />
tion.<lb />
"If we lose the direct student loan<lb />
program than the incentives for banks<lb />
to be more competitive and receptive<lb />
to the needs of the students and the<lb />
institution is gone Stelma said.<lb />
Many believe that the strategies<lb />
of congress in their efforts to balance<lb />
the budget deficit are misguided. Af-<lb />
ter all. it has long been said in America<lb />
that education is the key to the fu-<lb />
MHnHMHmMMHmmaHBB<lb />
ture. Proposed student aid cuts, if<lb />
carried out, would mean that less stu<lb />
dents will be able to receive a college<lb />
education.<lb />
'These cuts will have a serious<lb />
long term impact on educational op-<lb />
portunities Stelma said.<lb />
Cutting student financial aid is a<lb />
short sighted measure when it is taken<lb />
into consideration that financial aid<lb />
more than pays for itself in the long<lb />
run by producing productive people<lb />
who increase the tax base and enable<lb />
America to be competitive on a glo-<lb />
bal scale, the Alliance report stated.<lb />
The Alliance to Save Student .Aid<lb />
is working to keep congress from en-<lb />
acting their proposed cuts. If you<lb />

"They have to find ways to attract<lb />

Getsinger said the reason<lb />
ECU, along with most of the other<lb />

Our View<lb />
Just when<lb />
tuition is being<lb />
raised at NC<lb />
schools, the<lb />
federal<lb />
government is<lb />
continuing to<lb />
push their<lb />
proposed<lb />
financial aid<lb />
cuts. If aid is<lb />
cut, many<lb />
students are<lb />
going to have<lb />
no option but<lb />
to quit school.<lb />
Is this what our<lb />
government is<lb />
aiming for?<lb />

Once again we are going to bitch about financial aid, only<lb />
this time we won't be pointing fingers at the unorganized op-<lb />
eration on our campus. Instead, we aim to find out why the<lb />
American government feels it is necessary to cut our financial<lb />
aid by $10.4 billion.<lb />
We may all be feasting on Macaroni and Cheese and Oodles<lb />
of Noodles by the time Congress is finished with us. If their<lb />
proposed plan goes through each of us will be forced to rely on<lb />
jobs and our parents to support us while we get an education.<lb />
With one half of all students in public schools needing fed-<lb />
eral support and ECU processing an average of $25 million in<lb />
loans each year, too many are going to suffer while in the pro-<lb />
cess of only bettering ourselves.<lb />
With cuts like these occurring in our government, is it any<lb />
wonder that high school graduates are opting to skip out on<lb />
college and go straight into the work force? Ever heard the<lb />
expression that you get more from doing less. Heck, we could<lb />
probably make out better drawing unemployment from the gov-<lb />
ernment and leaving the college education to those whose par-<lb />
ents can afford tuition (which by the way will probably be raised<lb />
before we know it).<lb />
By attempting to cut our financial aid, it seems as though<lb />
Congress isn't listening to the American people who expressed<lb />
that cutting aid is not the ideal way to reduce the budget defi-<lb />
cit.<lb />
If our opinions don't matter, why do we even bother to vote?<lb />
In a study conducted in January, 89 percent of Americans said<lb />
next to social security, financial aid is the one area the govern-<lb />
ment shouldn't touch. But, it looks as though Congress couldn't<lb />
care less what we think. We're only the ones who put them in<lb />
office. Our concerns are no longer important.<lb />
It seems as though the government is kicking itself in the<lb />
butt. Everyone claims that America is losing its priorities and<lb />
that we are taking our focus off the children who are our future<lb />
leaders. So what is our government saying about the value of an<lb />
education when they propose to end the six month grace pe-<lb />
riod (after graduation) and raise interest rates on all loans.<lb />
Several weeks ago, TEC received a press release straight<lb />
from the Oval House written by President Clinton claiming to<lb />
explain the need to cut financial aid. Is he concerned about us<lb />
or is he simply setting up his platform for '96? Our voices and<lb />
opinions need to be heard to stop Congress (those who already<lb />
have their degrees) from hindering our educations. One day<lb />
we'll be in their positions. Let's only hope we have more com-<lb />
passion for college students than today's government does.<lb />
Take action and call 1-800-574-4AID. It's free and let your<lb />
congressperson know what you think about these proposed cuts. If you 've<lb />
got an email address, get technical and write them at (student-<lb />
aid@nchemail. nche. edu).<lb />

Driving yourself to the grave<lb />
I am not here to preach. I am here<lb />
to remind everybody about how pre-<lb />
cious life is. I know this sounds like<lb />
the typical cliche you might find in a<lb />
typical article. However, it is not. I<lb />
want to remind everybody about the<lb />
idea of a designated driver, you know,<lb />
that person who gets to hang around<lb />
their drunk friends and almost babysit<lb />
them. It may seem like the worst job<lb />
in the world, but just think of the al-<lb />

If you are not there to drive your<lb />
friends home, you might not still have<lb />
those friend the next day. I am not say-<lb />
ing that all accidents are caused by<lb />
drunk drivers, what I am saying is that<lb />
the majority of them are.<lb />
A friend of mine was driving home<lb />
from a concert sober as could be. She<lb />
and her friends had the perfect<lb />
evening. She had just become a sister<lb />
in the sorority she had worked so hard<lb />
to join. Everything seemed perfect<lb />
After the concert she and her friends<lb />
were on the highway driving back to<lb />
her school when she got hit I do not<lb />
mean sideswiped or rear ended, I mean<lb />
a head on collision. The driver of the<lb />
other vehicle had apparently had way<lb />
too much to drink, and having climbed<lb />
into the cab of a jacked-up truck, com-<lb />
menced to navigate his way down the<lb />
wrong side of the highway.<lb />
She did not have any time to re-<lb />
act She turned the wheel of her little<lb />
Honda, but it was too late. The truck<lb />
plowed right into her, killing one of<lb />
Brian Lewis Burns<lb />

It is not too<lb />
much to ask<lb />
for one person<lb />
to remain<lb />
sober for one<lb />
evening.<lb />
her friends immediately. My friend was<lb />
lucky enough to live until she arrived<lb />
at the hospital.<lb />
My friend would still be here with<lb />
me if that drivers' friends, who were<lb />
sober had taken his keys or had called<lb />
a cab for their friend. There were two<lb />
sober men in the cab of that truck<lb />
watching their drunk buddy at the<lb />
wheel. I was not the only person to<lb />
lose in this situation. My friend's par-<lb />
ents will never be able to see their<lb />
daughter again. Her friends will never<lb />
he able to hear her laugh or see her<lb />
wonderful smile again.<lb />
It is because of this guy and his<lb />
buddies that she is no longer with us.<lb />
This is why it is so important for people<lb />
have a designated driver. It is not too<lb />
much to ask for one person to remain<lb />
sober for one evening, ensuring the<lb />
safety of their friends.<lb />
The designated driver program is<lb />
perhaps one of the best ideas that I<lb />
have seen come around in a long time.<lb />
My fraternity has a program like this.<lb />
Every weekend night two people sit<lb />
at home and wait for a call from a<lb />
brother or a friend who needs a ride.<lb />
This goes on all semester long.<lb />
However you set up your program,<lb />
it is important that you know who is<lb />
the designated driver for that evening.<lb />
This simple little step could possibly<lb />
save you from having to face the real-<lb />
ization that you may never see your<lb />
friends again.<lb />
I do not recommend having to go<lb />
visit your friends in a hospital or even<lb />
worse, as I had to do, at the cemetery.<lb />
The hard truth is that when someone<lb />
who has been drinking gets behind the<lb />
wheel of a vehicle, they are selfishly<lb />
taking not only their life into their<lb />
hands, but anyone else who happens<lb />
to be on the road that night<lb />
Please, for your safety and that of<lb />
your friends, be responsible enough to<lb />
have a designated driver available ev-<lb />
ery time you are drinking. It can really<lb />
make a difference, and I don't want to<lb />
have to read about some poor indi-<lb />
vidual who could have been saved from<lb />
disaster by making one phone call to a<lb />
friend or for a cab.<lb />
It is now up to you. If you decide<lb />
to go out and drink, then you have to<lb />
call someone. Do not get behind that<lb />
wheel and take others lives in your<lb />
hands!<lb />
What happened to our role models?<lb />
Who controls the giving tree?<lb />
Many, many moons ago when I<lb />
was a small innocent and unblem-<lb />
ished child, my parents read me a<lb />
story. The story was of a tree that<lb />
gave a man all that it had and was<lb />
the solution to all his problems. Shell<lb />
Silverstien's book The Giving Tree<lb />
had me convinced that I was left out<lb />
in the cold, because the trees didn't<lb />
talk to me.<lb />
Well, many moons later I've<lb />
made it through my feelings of loss<lb />
and done so without becoming a se-<lb />
rial killer and blaming it on a lack of<lb />
attention from trees. And just when<lb />
I thought my problems were over 1<lb />
find that the giving tree is not just a<lb />
childhood short story. It exists in the<lb />
country of India.<lb />
No, this tree doesn't talk to any-<lb />
one (unless they are on some sort of<lb />
hallucinogen, in which case the sky<lb />
is the limit). But it does have the cure<lb />
to an awful lot of man's evils.<lb />
The tree in question is India's<lb />
Neem Tree. Its leaves and branches<lb />
are used to treat leprosy, diabetes,<lb />
ulcers, skin disorders and constipa-<lb />
tion. The seeds are used to form an<lb />
extract that has served as a natural<lb />
insecticide for centuries. It controls<lb />
lice, flies, beetles and mites. The<lb />
seeds can be used to kill small ro-<lb />
dents as well.<lb />
As with almost all problems, the<lb />
root of trouble is in control. The is-<lb />
sue is whether or not anyone has the<lb />
right to control ancient biological se-<lb />
crets.<lb />
Well, as of now, someone does;<lb />
W.R. Grace and Company. You see,<lb />
the company patented the Neem<lb />
seeds in America and is currently<lb />
doing quite well off them. They've<lb />
taken the original pesticide formula<lb />
and made it better then marketed it.<lb />
The conflict is being instigated<lb />
Chris Arline<lb />
Opinion Columnist<lb />
As with almo<lb />
all problems,<lb />
the root of<lb />
trouble is in<lb />
control<lb />
by the Foundation on Economic<lb />
Trends' president Jeremy Rifkin. A<lb />
self-proclaimed environmental watch-<lb />
dog, Rifkin leads a mass of about 200<lb />
scientists from 37 different countries.<lb />
Their claim is that it is unethical to<lb />
take a country's indigenous natural<lb />
resources and make a profit from<lb />
them.<lb />
They claim that the new flux in<lb />
demand will make it too expensive<lb />
for the native farmers, who have used<lb />
the tree and its seeds for generations<lb />
at virtually no cost to afford them.<lb />
The one thing they are overlooking<lb />
is that this patent is applied only to<lb />
the United States, not India, which<lb />
itself banned the patenting of agri-<lb />
cultural technology years ago.<lb />
Come on, you tree-huggin-cause-<lb />
hunting-little-crybabies. You are the<lb />
very little bunch that gives the envi-<lb />
ronmental watchdogs a bad name.<lb />
Let's face it, we are not dealing a<lb />
bunch of thugs cutting down people's<lb />
trees and not letting them use the<lb />
seeds. We are using the technology<lb />
they discovered to make the world a<lb />
better place.<lb />
But how do they stand to gain<lb />
from this change? They benefit the<lb />
same way the Chinese did when<lb />
Lipton started to export tea. The<lb />
same way the Hawaiians did when<lb />
Dole got into the pineapple business<lb />
(the single largest industry in the<lb />
rainbow state).<lb />
It's simple, by increasing the de-<lb />
mand for one of its biological re-<lb />
sources, another industry will be<lb />
sprouted in an underdeveloped na-<lb />
tion that desperately needs the in-<lb />
vestment and tax revenue.<lb />
We can also look at the future<lb />
opportunity this offers. With good<lb />
news like this coming from Asia,<lb />
think of the research that this stands<lb />
to spark in the region. When yields<lb />
of similar research operations in<lb />
South America have been minimal in<lb />
recent years, insiders may be look-<lb />
ing for new markets.<lb />
As far as ethics go, who's to say?<lb />
There is no such international ethics<lb />
board available to step in and call the<lb />
game. The petition filed by Rifkin and<lb />
his crew will fail because of the void<lb />
mentioned above. At best maybe their<lb />
cause will indeed spark up interest in<lb />
starting such an organization.<lb />
In no way, shape or form is this<lb />
meant to bash environmental watch-<lb />
dogs. I recycle and "give a hoot" more<lb />
than most people I know. The prob-<lb />
lem is with the poor cause that these<lb />
individuals have chosen.<lb />
If you're worried about India get-<lb />
ting ripped off, you are wasting your<lb />
time. They don't trust America any-<lb />
way. They would be the first to kick<lb />
out foreign exploiters just as fast as<lb />
the OPEC nations did, or at the very<lb />
least force them into profit sharing<lb />
agreements.<lb />
PS. My family uses the Neem<lb />
seeds to control moles, they work<lb />
great.<lb />
You gotta love Charles Barkley.<lb />
Why? Because like his counterpart,<lb />
"Neon" Deion (I don't give a damn<lb />
about the money) Sanders.his very<lb />
presence makes the sports world a<lb />
better, more exciting place.<lb />
But what happened to our real<lb />
role models in athletics, the guys like<lb />
Dr. J, or Walter Payton? The guys<lb />
who went to the gridiron, the base-<lb />
ball diamonds or the basketball are-<lb />
nas every day and were able to look<lb />
beyond the media's ridicule of them?<lb />
Where have those guys gone? How<lb />
about the same guys that don't en-<lb />
ter the national spotlight just to<lb />
shoot their mouth off as we, the<lb />
sports enthusiast have acknowledged<lb />
and shrugged them off with "Oh,<lb />
that's just Deion<lb />
It appears that Charles Barkley,<lb />
who has not one NBA Championship<lb />
ring on his finger, better recant his<lb />
statements about role models. I have<lb />
a feeling that in the near future nei-<lb />
ther he nor the American viewing<lb />
audience will hear the "I wanna be<lb />
like Charles" song unless it is uttered<lb />
in the same sentence as "retirement"<lb />
I have a problem with today's<lb />
professional athletes, who already<lb />
think that they are above society stat-<lb />
ing that they should not be role mod-<lb />
els to anyone, not even elementary<lb />
school children.<lb />
Looking back on the past month<lb />
in collegiate athletics, it was one tu-<lb />
multuous time that should probably<lb />
have gone by much quicker - that is<lb />
Eric Barteis<lb />
Opinion Columnist<lb />
What happened<lb />
to the real role<lb />
models in<lb />
athletics the<lb />
guys like Dr. J or<lb />
Walter Peyton?<lb />
if you are Lawrence Phillips, or de-<lb />
fending national championship coach<lb />
Tom Osbome (from Nebraska). After<lb />
losing his junior running back from<lb />
West Covina, Calif, because he was<lb />
accused of assaulting women, it was<lb />
rumored that Osbome may repeal his<lb />
original decision and allow Phillips<lb />
to rejoin the squad.<lb />
Now, is this logical? Who are we<lb />
dealing with here? Barry Switzer and<lb />
the Oklahoma Sooners of the mid<lb />
'80s? No, how about the Southeast-<lb />
ern Conference, who deserve to be<lb />
honored with the best football play-<lb />
ers in the nation while their coaches<lb />
and staffs are the best shysters.<lb />
Whose turn is it to take the athletic<lb />
probation challenge? We have already<lb />
seen Auburn, Kentucky and Florida.<lb />
Hey, how does Alabama sound?<lb />
First off, let us first commend<lb />
the antics of our foes from Tennes-<lb />
see. Nilo Sylvan sure did a number<lb />
on us back in early September, but<lb />
on his way to the big bowl, it appears<lb />
that Sylvan ran into the law, some-<lb />
thing much bigger than the Pirates.<lb />
Accused of rape, Sylvan will not plead<lb />
his case until mid-November and by<lb />
that time, coach Phillip Fulmer will<lb />
have plenty of reasons to insist that<lb />
his star wide receiver rejoin the team.<lb />
Especially for reasons like the Citrus<lb />
Bowl or Gator Bowl.<lb />
In any respect, (if that word "re-<lb />
spect" can be supplied in reference<lb />
to the SEC or the defending national<lb />
champions), what goes through these<lb />
coaches' minds? Do they think that<lb />
they can get away with violating<lb />
NCAA sanctions on recruiting as well<lb />
as let their players use calling cards<lb />
to call 1-900 numbers (UTenn.)?<lb />
The absurdities have amassed<lb />
over the last six months, especially<lb />
for the members in the SEC. Ala-<lb />
bama, who made "Bear" Bryant spin<lb />
a few times in his grave, rolled sev-<lb />
ens as they lost at the NCAA Sanc-<lb />
tions Crap Shoot a few months ago,<lb />
when it was revealed that Antonio<lb />
Langham was almost a Christmas<lb />
package for coach Gene Stallings to<lb />
unwrap around January 1. I'm also<lb />
sure that for Christmas that year<lb />
Langham was buying some good pre-<lb />
sents for his family.<lb />
And the children of our future<lb />
do not need role models? Now there<lb />
is a flaw in our society.<lb />

There is no doubt that the<lb />

May I be so "self-serving" as to<lb />

Brandon Waddell<lb />
Assistant Lifestyle Editor<lb />
Born out of the need to enter-<lb />
tain sailors and other seagoing trav-<lb />
elers passing through New Orleans,<lb />
jazz is the only truly American clas-<lb />
sification of music. Ocean-going mer-<lb />
chants and visitors were entertained<lb />
and amused by jazz musicians who<lb />
had to consistently change their style<lb />
to keep folks coming back to a cer-<lb />
tain club.<lb />
Of course, much has changed<lb />
since jazz's early bayou years in the<lb />
late 19th century One example of<lb />
such alterations is the instrumental<lb />
changes over the century of jazz his-<lb />
tory. But the most vital element, the<lb />
improvisational nature of the music,<lb />
is still alive and well in the hands of<lb />
the newest generation of jazz musi-<lb />
cians.<lb />
In association with the Student<lb />
Union Popular Entertainment Com-<lb />
mittee, ECU's Jazz Department will<lb />
be showcasing their most gifted stu-<lb />
dents tomorrow night in the ongo-<lb />
ing Jazz at Night series.<lb />
"It's fun for us the jazz faculty<lb />
because we get to see our cats and<lb />
catettes jazz students in a more in-<lb />
timate setting stated Carroll<lb />
DeShiell, director of jazz studies. "We<lb />
get to see what they've learned. Then<lb />
we can work one on one to hammer<lb />
out any problems they have with<lb />
their performance<lb />
Each semester, there are a few-<lb />
major jazz recitals in Wright Audito-<lb />
rium. But a venue of Wright's size<lb />
doesn't lend itself very well to the<lb />
intimacy of the small clubs that pro-<lb />
pelled jazz into the public eye.<lb />
The structure of Wright makes<lb />
it impossible for audience members<lb />
to move about in the arena and. due<lb />
to the size of its stage. Wright intimi-<lb />
dates many musicians.<lb />
"Jazz at Night is similar to<lb />
Wright, but more like a coffeehouse<lb />
type situation a looser performance<lb />
that is very good for the cats and<lb />
catettes DeShiell contends. "It's not<lb />
necessarily a 'formal' concert; it's a<lb />
club setting the students' friends<lb />
and peers see them in a looser atmo-<lb />
sphere<lb />
"Friday's event is not only a<lb />
non-alcoholic alternative to down-<lb />
town, but will have many different<lb />
things in it. There will be some<lb />
Coltrane and Ellington, as well as<lb />
some contemporary jazz<lb />
The Jazz at Night program will<lb />
feature four instrumental leaders<lb />
from the jazz program and as many<lb />
as four vocalists.<lb />
The two featured reedmen on<lb />
the bill are tenor saxman William<lb />
Tynch and altoist Vaughn Ambrose.<lb />
Brassman Mitch Butler will also be<lb />
featured, sliding his trombone. A duet<lb />
is also scheduled between pianist<lb />
Dennis Figgs and Ed Combs, sure to<lb />
be a hit in itself.<lb />
An accomplished jazz bassist him-<lb />
self. DeShiell humbly gives credit for<lb />
the Jazz at Night event to the student<lb />
activities office and the students them-<lb />
selves.<lb />
"We've had great support from J.<lb />
Marshall assistant director of student<lb />
activities, and we've been working<lb />
closely together to make this happen<lb />
he stated. "It gives students the chance<lb />
to express themselves in their craft<lb />
Jazz at Night should last about<lb />
two hours in the Great Room at<lb />
Mendenhall Student Center. It's sched-<lb />
uled to start at 8 p.m and promises to<lb />
be just as productive for the perform-<lb />
ing students as it is entertaining for<lb />
audience members.<lb />
The concert is free to anyone who<lb />
wants to come out and enjoy ECU<lb />
music jazz-style, accented with a dis-<lb />
tinctive Cajun flavor.<lb />

GRETA!<lb />

Greta<lb />
This is Greta!<lb />
Jay Myers<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Greta is a competent pop rock<lb />
band. With their initial album, Xo Bit-<lb />
ing, they gained critical acclaim but<lb />
made no impact on the buying public.<lb />
As far as that goes, Greta breaks no new<lb />
ground with their sophomore record,<lb />
rhi.s .5 Greta! Although this is a listen-<lb />
able album with good production, it<lb />
makes no movement away from formu-<lb />
laic rock structures.<lb />
On No Biting, Greta established an<lb />
aural flip-flop between hard-edged<lb />
power pop and acoustic, jangly folk-pop<lb />
that alternated from song to song. It<lb />
had bite and soul at the same time. On<lb />
This is Greta, they have relinquished<lb />
both of those extremes in favor of a<lb />
happy medium that leaves them sound-<lb />
ing slightly bland and bored. There are<lb />
a couple of things that save this record<lb />
from the trash bin, though.<lb />
First the lead singer and major<lb />
songwriter for the band, Paul Plagens,<lb />
has an excellent voice which embodies<lb />
character and inflection, things that are<lb />
missing from most singers' repertoires<lb />
today. This flexibility enables him to give<lb />
dramatic readings to songs that would<lb />
otherwise be lost in the musical dol-<lb />
drums allowing them to embody anger,<lb />
sarcasm, indifference and reluctance.<lb />
People often forget that songs are a form<lb />
of poetic expression, and if they are read<lb />
with emphasis and articulation, instead<lb />
of simple screaming, they become some-<lb />
thing different (not that screaming<lb />
doesn't have its own benefits).<lb />
Also, these guys are excellent mu-<lb />
sicians. Greta's first line-up consisted of<lb />
Plagens and bassist Josh Gordon, along<lb />
with lead guitarist Kyle Baer and drum-<lb />
mer Brad Wilk. Plagens and Gordon<lb />
have been friends since their early days<lb />
in junior high and know each other's<lb />
musical styles so well that their playing<lb />
has become an organic experience that<lb />
shows up well in their studio work.<lb />
Just prior to Greta, Baer and Wilk<lb />
had been in a band called Indian Style<lb />
lead by a pre-Pearl Jam Eddie Vedder,<lb />
so that experience should establish<lb />

SNL" holds out new hope<lb />
Every paper has a TV critic, but<lb />
our critic is no normal couch potato,<lb />
no mere TV junkie. No, our man will<lb />
watch anything, anytime, regardless<lb />
of quality or good taste. Truly, he has<lb />
no shame, and that is why we call<lb />
him "The TV Whore<lb />

Staff Writer<lb />
I must confess. I really, really<lb />
wanted to be evil to last Saturday's<lb />
premiere of the new-and-somewhat-<lb />
improved "Saturday Night Live<lb />
I mean, after all, SNL's track<lb />
record hasn't been up to anyone's<lb />
snuff lately. This once-great sbple of<lb />
irreverent television comedy has been<lb />
floundering (no, make that drowning)<lb />
in a backwash of backbiting, in-fight-<lb />

unfunnyness. Making great comedic<lb />

Devil in a Blue Dress gives Denzel<lb />

the first novel about Rollins by Walter<lb />

seems perfect for Hollywood -film noir<lb />

life. Rollins has the serious, quiet flawed<lb />
character that can involve a viewer in<lb />
that character's life. Some of the deci-<lb />
sions Rollins make are questionable, but<lb />
the audience at least understands why<lb />
he made them, even if they don't agree<lb />
with them. Rollins is not portrayed as<lb />
superhuman either. In fact the finale of<lb />
the film catches the audience off guard<lb />
because the hero does not come in to<lb />
save the day.<lb />
Washington has quietly become<lb />
one of the most reliable leading men<lb />
working in films today. He confidently<lb />
gives Rollins the toughness and warmth<lb />
necessary to make the character come<lb />
alive. In a muscle top tee-shirt and a<lb />
thin mustache, Washington looks like<lb />
he was born to play Rollins. He could<lb />
have stepped out of a 1948 film.<lb />
Franklin works hard to create the<lb />
authentic feel of Devil in a Blue Dress.<lb />
From lue establishing shot which has<lb />
a stream of cars from that era rumbling<lb />
down a main street Franklin asserts his<lb />
intention to take a realistic look at post-<lb />
war life in Los Angeles.<lb />
Franklin does more than just a<lb />
perfunctory job of establishing Rollins'<lb />
life at home. I worried that an early<lb />
scene in which Rollins plants a tree in<lb />
his backyard would be the only one I<lb />
would see of Rollins oeing a real per-<lb />
son, instead of just a hard-boiled loner<lb />
embroiled in a case.<lb />
Franklin repeatedly shows Rollins<lb />
at home; sleeping on a chair on his<lb />
porch, rweeping off his sidewalk, look-<lb />
ing at his yard. Because of the charac-<lb />
ter development Rollins emerges as a<lb />
three-dimensional figure that makes<lb />
Devil in a Blue Dress feel like more than<lb />
just a two-dimensional image projected<lb />
on a screen.<lb />
Franklin also adeptly handles the<lb />
racial tensions of the era. Rollins is re-<lb />
cruited to find a white girl because she<lb />
has a "predilection for negroes The<lb />
police go easy on Rollins when they<lb />
suspect him of killing a black voman,<lb />
but come down hard when he is then<lb />
accused of killing a white man. The<lb />
boundaries between black and white<lb />
keep appearing, as when Rollins must<lb />
be sneaked into a section of a hotel that<lb />
is whites only<lb />

Staff Writer<lb />
From the Nobel prize winning author of One<lb />
Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of<lb />
Cholera comes a new novel. Of Love and Other De-<lb />
mons is only 147 pages long, so if you've never read<lb />
Marquez and don't have the time to get involved in a<lb />
novel as long as those mentioned above, this is the<lb />
book for you.<lb />
The story takes place in South .America during<lb />
the colonial era. At the center is a misunderstood 12-<lb />
year-old girl. Sierva Maria is the neglected child of<lb />
decadent aristocratic parents. She is raised by slaves<lb />
and completely ignored until the day she is bitten by<lb />
a rabid dog at the market in town. When this fact<lb />
comes to light her father at last decides to become<lb />
involved in her life. Unfortunately, this means disas-<lb />
ter for the girl. Months later, when she comes down<lb />
with a fever, he calls in a number of quack doctors<lb />
who do all they can to inflict as much pain and abuse<lb />
as they can onto the girl in the name of medicine.<lb />
This abusive experience results in a behavior similar<lb />
to that of rabies victims.<lb />
Sierva Maria's problems are further complicated<lb />
by the fact that she's largely ignorant of how to con-<lb />
duct herself in white culture. She speaks African lan-<lb />
guages more fluently than her own. She's never been<lb />
to church. Soon, however, she finds herself impris-<lb />

The major fault of this release from<lb />

pose of exorcism. It is here that she<lb />
meets Father Cayetano Delaura, the<lb />
priest who has been charged with her<lb />
exorcism. Father Delaura is bright<lb />
enough to figure out that the girl is sim-<lb />
ply frightened and not possessed at all,<lb />
but he's not bright enough to devise a<lb />
way to convince everyone else. He falls<lb />
in love with Sierva Maria, and she falls<lb />
for him as well.<lb />
The shadow of the Catholic church<lb />
looms over every aspect of this story.<lb />
Delaura, being a librarian, is fascinated<lb />
with books that were deemed forbidden<lb />
by the church. At one point in the story,<lb />
he is introduced to the illegal book col-<lb />
lection of a Jew and is amazed to find a<lb />
copy of Don Quixote. We begin to real-<lb />
ize that the church serves as a shield<lb />
for the ignorant and petty characters<lb />
of the story to hide behind, and in this<lb />
way it precipitates more evil than it elimi-<lb />
nates.<lb />
The politics of the church consist<lb />
mainly of persons in power pointing fin-<lb />
gers at helpless victims, such as Sierva<lb />
Maria, and once these victims are la-<lb />
beled as "evil" there is no saving them<lb />
from the wrath of the Church. This is<lb />
something that Delaura should realize,<lb />
since he himself has read many forbid-<lb />
den texts and has had the opportunity<lb />
to see the church isn't always right This<lb />
is a fact he can't accept, however, and<lb />
because of this he can't see that coop-<lb />
eration with the church isn't going to<lb />
work in his situation. Instead of rescu-<lb />
ing Sierva Maria from the Convent he<lb />
decides to wait until the whole nasty<lb />
business works itself out and Sierva<lb />
Maria is absolved.<lb />
In the convent where she is held<lb />
prisoner, Sierva Maria iives in a cell next<lb />
to an insane nun. In the house where<lb />
she grew up, an insane asylum for<lb />
women is next door. Her father has a<lb />
lifelong romantic involvement with one<lb />
of the patients. These crazy people are<lb />
much more harmless than the Bishop<lb />
that Delaura works for and the Abbess<lb />
who is in charge of the convent wk e<lb />
Seirva Maria goes for exorcism. Social<lb />
conventions and the church serve to get<lb />
in the way of everybody's happiness in<lb />
Of Love and Other Demons.<lb />
This novel isn't one of Marquez'<lb />
best, but that's not saying it's not a thor-<lb />
oughly absorbing and satisfying read.<lb />
The story contains the same richly tex-<lb />
tured settings as his other works, and<lb />
the characters are just as fascinatingly<lb />
unusual. The book is not as deep and<lb />
intricate as One Hundred Years of Soli-<lb />
tude or Love in the Time of Cholera.<lb />
but that's because it's so much shorter.<lb />

77e East Carolinian<lb />
DEVIL from page 6 SINL. from page<lb />
merit of Owfl Ai u Blue Dress, needs<lb />
plenty of minor characters. Tom<lb />
Sizemore is again effective as a seem-<lb />
ingly calm hoodlum with an anger that<lb />
can flair in a heartbeat. Jennifer Beats<lb />
is alluring as Daphne Monet, the girl<lb />
Rollins is recruited to find, and Don<lb />
Cheadle steals his scenes as Mouse, a<lb />
friend of Rollins with a penchant for<lb />
murder.<lb />
Devil in a Blue Dress lacks a<lb />
flamboyant style that may lessen its<lb />
appeal. Please believe this humble<lb />
critic that you would be doing your-<lb />
self a disservice to pass up this film<lb />
simply because it lacks glamour. The<lb />
methodical pacing and realistic atmo-<lb />
sphere allows the viewer to savor the<lb />
story and the characters. The atten-<lb />
tion to detail in the filming of Devil<lb />
in a Blue Dress may allow this to be-<lb />
come a minor classic.<lb />
Still. 1 worry about the audience<lb />
reaction. As 1 stood in line on Friday<lb />
night at The Plaza 1 listened to the<lb />
25 people ahead of me buy their tick-<lb />
ets and every one asked for tickets to<lb />
Halloween, The Curse of Michael<lb />
Myers. 1 looked behind me and saw<lb />
at least 50 more people and my hopes<lb />
raised a little. But when Devil in a<lb />
Blue Dress started there were less<lb />
than 3C people in the theater with<lb />
me. Why, I wondered, would patrons<lb />
pay $5.50 to see a derivative horror<lb />
film when they could spend the same<lb />
money and see what promised to be a<lb />
film with integrity?<lb />
Perhaps I'll never answer that<lb />
one. But 1 can answer whether Devil<lb />
in a Blue Dress is worth seeing. That<lb />
answer is yes.<lb />
On a scale of one to 10, Devil in<lb />
a Blue Dress rates an eight.<lb />
sconced in a death-shroud of crap.<lb />
This was followed by guest-host<lb />
Mariel Hemmingway's opening shtick.<lb />
a one-shot joke about Hemmingway's<lb />
"controversial" kissing of Rosanne<lb />
Barr. Thus, "SNL" hits its second<lb />
deadly sin after only ten minutes of<lb />
being on the air: the pretty funny joke<lb />
that goes on for an eon and makes<lb />
the viewer want to climb a bell tower<lb />
with a high-powered rifle, scream "Not<lb />
funny and shoot folks.<lb />
Already I was curled up, sneer on<lb />
my face and pen in hand, waiting to<lb />
pounce on this show that appeared<lb />
to have lost its last leg. Then came<lb />
"A.M. Ale<lb />
"A.M. Ale" was another in<lb />
"SNL's" bitingly funny commercial<lb />
parodies, showing a huge beer with<lb />
the pointed byline "Because you can't<lb />
wait "till afternoon Excellent, but<lb />
then again, these parodies have always<lb />
been good. Then another lame skit<lb />
featuring Ferrell (who is essentially<lb />
Kevin Nealon) as a shouting psycho<lb />
dad brought the show back down.<lb />
Finally, however, this new cast hit<lb />
its stride with a nasty "Nightline" skit<lb />
featuring a debate between Gen. Colin<lb />
Powell (Tim Meadows) and Sen. Bob<lb />
Dole (Norm MacDonald). MacDonald<lb />
was beautiful, barking like a mad dog<lb />
that Powell is a homosexual. When<lb />
Powell responds he is happily married.<lb />
Dole said, "Yeah, well, a lot of people<lb />
like to drive two cars<lb />
Also well done was a new skit.<lb />
Leg Up: A Show for Dancers About<lb />
Dancers hosted by Ann Miller (Sh-<lb />
annon) and Debbie Reynolds (Oteri),<lb />
who discuss the costars they've slept<lb />
with more than dancing. As these two<lb />
die-hard musical warhorses. Shannon<lb />
and Oteri perform the best female-<lb />
driven sketch comedy "SNL" has seen<lb />
since the premiere of Mike Myers'<lb />
"Coffee Talk" (oh, wait).<lb />
Following that was "Weekend<lb />
Update" and 1 believe that anchor<lb />
Norm MacDonald has almost hit his<lb />
stride here. Comparisons to Dennis<lb />
Miller still rage, but MacDonald is<lb />
making this bit his own with such<lb />
"news" bits as Johnnie Cochran try-<lb />
ing on the knit hat as O.J. yells out in<lb />
the courtroom "Hey, hey! Easy with<lb />
that! That's my lucky stabbing hat<lb />
The rest of the show floundered<lb />
afterwards, particularly David Spade's<lb />
new weekly bit "Spade in America"<lb />
(self-pandering and stinky). And the<lb />
attempt to bring back Mike<lb />
McKinneys bizarre Chicken Lady<lb />
character from his "Kids in the Hall"<lb />
days was horribly botched. But hey.<lb />
that middle part was excellent!<lb />
As far as standout members of<lb />
the new cast, only Oteri's Debbie<lb />
Reynolds comes to mind. The new<lb />
men are all pretty much Kevin Nealon<lb />
clones. 1 am hopeful for this new cast,<lb />
however. We often don't remember<lb />
how hit-or-miss the show was when<lb />
Ackroyd. Belushi. Chase, et. al. graced<lb />
"SNLs very early days. These days,<lb />
this new cast should be happy with<lb />
the hits it had. Anyway, it's better than<lb />

ECU swim team sets records<lb />
I've got it!<lb />
Eleven new<lb />
records set at<lb />
pentathalon<lb />
J. Miles Layton<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
The swim team set 11 new<lb />
pentatnalon records Wednesday in<lb />
Minges Pool. The men's team beat two<lb />
school records and the women's team<lb />
beat nine.<lb />
The team holds an annual<lb />
pentathalon before the first meet of the<lb />
seasoa Each swimmer must predict what<lb />
his or her time will be for each stroke for<lb />
points. Those closest to their assigned<lb />
times get the most points. The events<lb />
are the 200-yard individual medley which<lb />
features four 50 yard strokes of butter-<lb />
fly, front crawl, back stroke and breast<lb />
stroke. Following this, there are four sepa-<lb />
rate 100 yard strokes with a 12 minute<lb />
rest in between. The strokes are butter-<lb />
fly, breast front crawl and backstroke.<lb />
Coach Rick Kobe was very pleased<lb />
with the effort of this team before their<lb />
first meet<lb />
"We established 11 new<lb />
pentathalon records today Kobe said.<lb />
"The most we've ever set is four<lb />
The winner for the men's team was<lb />
freshmen Pablo Espada with 4500<lb />
points. Espada broke the 1978<lb />
pentathalon record for the 200-yard in-<lb />
dividual medley set by John Tudor at<lb />
1:58.64. Espada's time was 1:58 evea He<lb />
was surprised at his new record.<lb />
"I didn't think 1 was going that fast"<lb />
Espada said.<lb />
Sophomore Jim Broughal came in<lb />
second with 4080 points. Broughal won<lb />
last year with 2690 points.<lb />
Third went to junior, Chris<lb />
Bembenek who broke his own record set<lb />
in 1993 for the backstroke. His old time<lb />
in the 100-yard backstroke at 54:73 gave<lb />
way to a new 54:70.<lb />
Fourth place went to junior Brian<lb />
Wall who scored 2430 points and fifth<lb />
went to freshmen Edward Garguevic who<lb />
hau 2370 points.<lb />
The winner for the women's team<lb />
was junior Melanie Mackwoodwith 4000<lb />
points. Mackwood broke the 100-ard<lb />
butterfly record with a 1:01.48 which was<lb />
set by Melissa Phillips in 1993 at 1:01.73.<lb />
MackvoM also broke the 100 yard<lb />
front crawl record with a new time of<lb />
55:02 which had been set at 55:08 by<lb />
Hilary Stokes.<lb />
Mackwood didn't think she was<lb />
moving that fast<lb />
"I thought the race was like work<lb />
pace, hard, but not race pace Mackwood<lb />
said.<lb />
Freshmen Lynsey Bullington tied<lb />
with sophomore Sandra Ossman for sec-<lb />
ond place with 3460 points. Ossman<lb />
broke the 200-yard individual medley<lb />
record set by Kim Field in 1994 at 2:15.03<lb />
with a new time of 2:14.45. She also<lb />
broke the 100-yard butterfly record pre-<lb />
viously set by Melissa Phillips in 1993.<lb />
Senior Jackie Schmieder came in<lb />
third with 3450 points. Fourth went to<lb />
Amanda Atkinson who scored 3440<lb />
points and fifth went to Kim Field who<lb />
scored 3410 points and broke two<lb />
records. She broke the 200 yard indi-<lb />
vidual medley record and the 100 yard<lb />
butterfly record.<lb />

When ECU travels to Cincinnati<lb />
on Saturday to face the Bearcats, they<lb />
will be facing a college football team<lb />
that is not reflective of their record<lb />
of 14. Coach Rick Minter's squad has<lb />
played tough ail season long, losing<lb />
tight decisions to Kansas, Kansas St,<lb />
Miami of Ohio and Toledo. The<lb />
Bearcats one victory was impressive,<lb />
as they went to Blacksburg, Va. and<lb />
defeated Virginia Tech 16-0 on their<lb />
home field.<lb />
ECU leads the series with Cincin-<lb />
nati, 8-1 including last season's 35-21<lb />
victory in Greenville. However the last<lb />
time ECU visited Nippert Stadium in<lb />
1993, the Bearcats sent the Pirates<lb />
home with a 34-14 loss.<lb />
Cincinnati returned 16 starters<lb />
and 37 letterwinners from last year's<lb />
2-8-1 squad, and so far this season the<lb />
star of the Bearcat team has been jun-<lb />
ior wide receiver Robert Tate. The<lb />
Harrisonburg, Pa. native had 315 all-<lb />
purpose yards against Toledo last<lb />
week, including a career high 177<lb />
yards receiving. Tate has 987 total all-<lb />
purpose yards so far in '95, and is<lb />
ranked seventh nationally.<lb />

On Tuesday night the women's<lb />
volleyball team took on Campbell<lb />
University in Williams Arena. The<lb />
match consisted of five games, with<lb />
the Lady Pirates winning three of the<lb />
five.The scores were: Came 1 ECU<lb />
15-11, Game 2 Cambell 15-8, Game<lb />
3 Campbell 15-10, Game 4 ECU 15-8<lb />
and Game 5 ECU 15-6.<lb />
The night began with ECU tak-<lb />
ing the first game 15-11. Lady Pirates<lb />
Melanie Richards and Carrie Brne led<lb />
the game with five and eight kills re-<lb />
spectively. The Lady Pirates played<lb />
the first match very well with only<lb />
six errors.<lb />
The second match was a little<lb />
disappointing with ECU only scoring<lb />
eight to lose it 8-15. Five Pirates con-<lb />
tributed to the eight points scored<lb />
by ECU. The Pirates only had six er-<lb />
rors in the second game.<lb />
The third game brought disap-<lb />
pointment to the ECU team with the<lb />
Lady Pirates losing 15-10. The team<lb />
did hold down the number of total<lb />
errors to only five this time, but the<lb />
team total of kills was only 10, each<lb />
kill accounting for one point.<lb />
But the Lady Pirates came back<lb />
in the fourth game to win big 15-8<lb />
over Cambell. The Lady Pirates held<lb />
the total errors down to four in the<lb />
fourth game, and racked up 11 more<lb />
kills to win the game and regain their<lb />
momentum.<lb />
"We're glad we won, but for the<lb />
team it's not good enough and in or-<lb />
der to become better we need to fo-<lb />
cus more and play better ball said<lb />
freshmen Kristen Meininger.<lb />
The ECU comeback continued<lb />
into the fifth game with the Lady Pi-<lb />
rates winning again 15-6. In this fi-<lb />
nal game the Pirates recorded no<lb />
errors and five kills and once again<lb />
the majority of the kills were attrib-<lb />
uted to Richards and Bme.<lb />
Coach Kim Walker said the night<lb />
was a learning experience for the<lb />
team.<lb />
"Well we won sometimes flat<lb />
matches teach you more than great<lb />
matches and we were flat said<lb />
Walker. "We will stay positive and<lb />
work to get better<lb />
averaging 228 total offensive yards per<lb />
game, which ranks him 26th in the<lb />
NCAA. He was 19-38 for 302 yards<lb />
against Toledo. The Bearcats rushing<lb />
game is led by Craedel Kimmbrough,<lb />
a 5-foot-ll, 181-pound senior, who<lb />
after five games has 220 yards for<lb />
Cincinnati.<lb />
On defense the Bearcats returned<lb />
eight starters from the the '94 team.<lb />
The key to the Cincinnati defense is<lb />
6-foot4 215 lb Sam Games who had<lb />
134 stops a year ago. So far this sea-<lb />
son Games has 47 tackles from his<lb />
free safety spot, and was named Lib-<lb />
erty Bowl Alliance defensive player of<lb />
the week for his two interception per-<lb />
formance against Kansas St Line-<lb />
backer Muharn El-Mubarak leads the<lb />
Cincinnati defense with 62 tackles in<lb />
'95, which included 25 against Toledo<lb />
Outside linebacker Brad Jackson<lb />
has had a fine year up to date. In the<lb />
win over Virginia Tech. Jackson inter-<lb />
cepted two passes, recovered two<lb />
fumbles, and made 13 tackles. He was<lb />
named Conference USA and Sports<lb />
Illustrated Defensive Player of the<lb />
Week.<lb />
NOTES:<lb />
The game between ECU and Cin-<lb />
cinnati on Saturday will have the<lb />
nation's fifth oldest football program<lb />
in Cincinnati against the nations fifth<lb />
youngest in ECU Saturday's game<lb />
will be the first for both teams in the<lb />
Liberty Bowl Alliance. After the Cin-<lb />

Dr. Henry VanSant, associate di-<lb />

spending a quiet night away from cam-<lb />

"It is a common practice all over<lb />

When the team gets to the hotel,<lb />
players go to meetings to discuss the<lb />
upcoming game. There are strategy<lb />
sessions held about defensive and of-<lb />
fensive game plays. VanSant said the<lb />
time away gets the players to visualize<lb />
and focus on the game.<lb />
"Focus is very<lb />
important" he said.<lb />
"We try to get them<lb />
to visualize the<lb />

VanSant said<lb />
the team used to<lb />
spend the night in<lb />
Greenville at the<lb />
Comfort Inn three<lb />
years ago, before<lb />
new ownership<lb />
raised prices. The<lb />
team then moved to the Holiday Inn<lb />
in Williamston before finally moving<lb />
to the Comfort Inn in Kinston.<lb />
VanSant said the moves have been<lb />
based on price, but he hopes the team<lb />
may again move back to Greenville.<lb />
"We may move back to Greenville<lb />
if we can find what we are looking<lb />
for he said.<lb />
VanSant said most other teams<lb />
do not sleep in hotels the night be-<lb />
fore the game because it would be<lb />
"Basketball and other teams may<lb />
have two or three games a week ver-<lb />
sus football which has five home<lb />
games a year he said.<lb />
VanSant recalled Ihe days when<lb />
he was a coach and explained that get-<lb />
ting the team together the night be-<lb />
fore a big game is important because<lb />
it bonds the players and coaching staff<lb />
together.<lb />
"This is a pretty good thing for<lb />

Staff Writer<lb />
ECU swimmer McGee Moody's<lb />
hard work and dedication have fol-<lb />
lowed him throughout his swimming<lb />
career. Since the age of four he has<lb />
been swimming in summer leagues<lb />
and since the age of ten has been<lb />
swimming all year round.<lb />
Moody, a senior from<lb />
Albertville, Ala was recruited by<lb />
three other schools. But his first<lb />
choice was ECU.<lb />
He had gotten of-<lb />
fers from Ala-<lb />
bama, Auburn,<lb />
and Ohio State,<lb />
but when he vis-<lb />
ited ECU he had<lb />
a good feeling for<lb />
the swim team.<lb />
In fact after he<lb />
visited ECU he<lb />
canceled his trip<lb />
up to Ohio and<lb />
told Ohio State<lb />
he had made his<lb />
decision.<lb />
"A lot of guys made me feel re-<lb />
ally welcome, like they really wanted<lb />
me as a part of this team Moody<lb />
said. "Now that I am here, I know<lb />
how important it is to get people<lb />
here<lb />
Moody feels this is going to be<lb />
a good season. A lot of new talent<lb />
and many people stepping up their<lb />
leadership skills, has helped the<lb />
team build confidence going into a<lb />
season where many of the oppo-<lb />
nents look to be tough. Some of<lb />
those challenging meets might come<lb />
from ODU, who Moody believes is<lb />
going to surprise a lot of teams or<lb />
possibly JMU who is also an oppo-<lb />
nent that has in the past had a strong<lb />
swim team. Their biggest rivalry<lb />
comes from UNC-Wilmington, always<lb />
a strong contender in the CAA.<lb />
"We could not have won a meet<lb />
all year, and they (UNC-W) could be<lb />
undefeated and it's still going to be<lb />
a close meet Moody said.<lb />
Before a meet Moody starts the<lb />
day early, getting in a morning swim<lb />
and some breakfast During the day<lb />
he tries to keep his mind off the<lb />
meet, until he arrives at the pool.<lb />
"Once we're there and warmed<lb />
up, I try to keep my mind off my race<lb />
and watch everyone else and cheer<lb />
them on he said.<lb />
When he steps up on the start-<lb />
ing block, Moody concentrates on<lb />
one thing, having a perfect race.<lb />
Before he begins, he will go over<lb />
three or four things in his head and<lb />
envision himself swimming without<lb />
flaw.<lb />
"I expect nothing less than a<lb />
perfect race he said.<lb />
Moody said the swim team is like<lb />
one giant family that sticks together<lb />
and helps each other out when<lb />
things might<lb />
 look slim.<lb />
"We're al-<lb />
ways patting<lb />
each other on<lb />
the back and<lb />
picking each<lb />
other up<lb />
Moody said.<lb />
When the<lb />
going gets<lb />
tough. Moody<lb />
advises his<lb />
teammates to<lb />
keep going and<lb />
hang in there.<lb />
He constantly tries to pump his team-<lb />
mates up.<lb />
Pablo Espada, a freshmen who<lb />
broke a school record for the 200<lb />
yard individual medley this week,<lb />
said Moody is a team leader.<lb />
"He is a team leader with a high<lb />
spirit, who always keeps us going<lb />
when we're having a tough practice<lb />
said Espada.<lb />
One thing Moody is very proud<lb />
about is the fact there isn't much<lb />
"He is a team<lb />
leader with a high<lb />
spirit, who always<lb />
keeps us going<lb />
when we're having<lb />
a tough practice<lb />

all try to help one another out,<lb />
whether that be in the pool or out of<lb />

Phis dedicated swimmer gives a<lb />
lot of credit to his fellow teammates.<lb />
lie believes much of this season de-<lb />
pends on the freshmen, who he sees<lb />
as being wry fast this year. He doesn't<lb />
forget the other swimmers though.<lb />
Moody said it is a group effort that<lb />
everyone contributes toward. The fact<lb />
that many people have helped out one<lb />
another makes everything a team ef-<lb />
fort They all pull together, no matter<lb />
how tough things may get.<lb />
A typical practice the swimmers<lb />
endure is very intense. It requires the<lb />
hard work and determination of ev-<lb />
eryone. Not only do the swimmers<lb />
practice hard but so do the coaches.<lb />
"Everyone gives 110 percent in-<lb />
cluding the coaches he said.<lb />
Every team has a team motto so<lb />
it is appropriate that the swim team<lb />
have one also. Their theme has to do<lb />
with staying focused and staying on<lb />
track. Moody said the motto is about<lb />
keeping on the right track.<lb />
"You may be on the right track,<lb />
but if you're sitting still you're still<lb />
going to get run over Moody said.<lb />
He said it's a motto that applies<lb />
not only to swimming but applies to<lb />
life itself. It is something that Moody<lb />
strongly believes in and takes to<lb />
heart before every meet.<lb />
When Moody isn't in the pool<lb />
you'll find him relaxing and possibly<lb />
even watching a little football with<lb />
some of his teammates. While he is<lb />
relaxing he tries to think of swim-<lb />
ming as little as possible.<lb />
This talented swimmer would<lb />
like to put his knowledge about the<lb />
sport to good use when he graduates.<lb />
He sees himself coaching, hopefully<lb />
here at ECU. He is a double major,<lb />
majoring in business administration<lb />
and psychology, so if coaching<lb />
doesn't work out he will have a back<lb />
