Book rental system<lb />
not impossible<lb />
System would<lb />
hinder flexibility<lb />
in class texts<lb />
Marguerite Benjamin<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The question has surfaced again.<lb />
Why doesn't the university introduce<lb />
a rental system in order to make ac-<lb />
quiring textbooks less of a cash-con-<lb />
suming hassle for students?<lb />
The first time the question rose,<lb />
the answer came in the form of the<lb />
Umsted Act which stated that it<lb />
shall be unlawful for any unit, depart-<lb />
ment or agency of the state govern-<lb />
ment to engage directly or indi-<lb />
rectly in the sale of goods, wares or<lb />
merchandise in competition with the<lb />
citizens of the State or to main-<lb />
tain service establishment for the ren-<lb />
dering of services to the public ordi-<lb />
narily and customarily rendered by<lb />
private enterprises<lb />
A lot of people took those words<lb />
to mean that since ECU is a state<lb />
agency, it is against the law for the<lb />
university to have a book rental sys-<lb />
tem that would introduce an unfair<lb />
advantage over ECU Student Store's<lb />
closest competitor, University Book<lb />
Exchange (UBE).<lb />
Thus the notion was abandoned,<lb />
but according to Assistant University<lb />
Attorney Greg Hassler the Act was<lb />
misinterpreted.<lb />
"If you were to read the entire<lb />
article thoroughly said Hassler,<lb />
"you would see that it doesn't pro-<lb />
hibit a rental system in any way. In<lb />
fact, in items b-8 and c-3 of the ar-<lb />
ticle, it clearly states that North Caro-<lb />
lina universities are exempt from the<lb />
act as far as 'articles of merchandise<lb />
incident to classroom work' and<lb />
books are concerned, and that the<lb />
Act does not prohibit 'business op-<lb />
eration established for the purpose<lb />
of producing income for educational<lb />
purposes "<lb />
"Essentially, the Act prohibits<lb />
the state government or any state af-<lb />
filiated agency from competing with<lb />
private agencies with the intent to<lb />
turn a profit which is not reinvested<lb />
into that state agency.<lb />
Hassler added that as long as the<lb />
university observes the guidelines of<lb />
the Umsted Act, it can introduce any<lb />
type of commodity including a book<lb />
rental system.<lb />
So if the Umsted Act is not the<lb />
answer to the question of why ECU<lb />
does not rent instead of sell text-<lb />
books, what is?<lb />
"A rental system for textbooks<lb />
really does not present much of an<lb />
advantage to students or to the fac-<lb />
ulty said Doris Parker, text buyer<lb />
for North Carolina State University.<lb />
"When you speak of a rental sys-<lb />
tem there are a lot of things you have<lb />
to consider such as faculty agreement<lb />
and fees students must pay when a<lb />
rented book is damaged Parker<lb />
stated, adding that though compet-<lb />
ing book stores would not be happy<lb />
about a university employing a rental<lb />
system, they really have nothing to<lb />
do with the decision.<lb />
Course Materials Manager of the<lb />
University of North Carolina at<lb />
Chapel Hill. Gina Mahalek, agrees<lb />
that a rental system holds no real ad-<lb />

ECU'S Student Government .Asso-<lb />
ciation (SGA) passed a bill last spring<lb />
which caused some confusion among the<lb />
executive council during the summer<lb />
session.<lb />
"The bill that was passed during<lb />
spring it was to protect SGAs money<lb />
as far as people giving any political fa-<lb />
vors former Treasurer Michael Cames<lb />
said. "People in SGA tell their friends<lb />
'wait until summer comes up, there's no<lb />
legislature It kind of puts a check in<lb />
place because there wasn't one before<lb />
The bill stated that organizations<lb />
which received more than $1,000 in an-<lb />
nual appropriations are ineligable to re-<lb />
ceive summer appropriations.<lb />
The Saltwater Fishing Association<lb />
(SWFA) was the first group to ask for<lb />
money.<lb />
The SWFA was approved more than<lb />
$1,200 last spring which went unused,<lb />
according to the SGA office. Cames said,<lb />
if an organization does not use approved<lb />
funds before the fiscal year ending in<lb />
June, the money reverts back to SGA.<lb />
The money was approved for use in pro-<lb />
moting the organization.<lb />
"When they (SGA) allocated that<lb />
money, they specified how it would be<lb />
used Dr. Al Matthews, vice chancellor<lb />
for student life said. He said the money<lb />
was to be used for services and supplies<lb />
for the organization.<lb />
Calhoun said he had been told he<lb />
could also receive summer appropria-<lb />
tions in addition to the amount approved,<lb />
and planned to enter a fishing tourna-<lb />
ment in June.<lb />
"We asked for summer appropria-<lb />
tions to fish a tournament" SWFA Presi-<lb />
dent Cameron Calhoun said. "We did<lb />
end up going, but not like we planned, it<lb />
was all out-of-pocket (funding)<lb />
He had been informed that he could<lb />
not receive SGA money the day before<lb />
the planned trip.<lb />
"It was really horrible, nobody knew<lb />
the rules to tell me about how to go about<lb />
getting any money Calhoun said.<lb />
Three people were named to attend<lb />
the tournament on the formal requisi-<lb />
tion, but Calhoun said more of the<lb />
group's members had planned to attend.<lb />
During the regular session, SGA gener-<lb />
ally ruled against funding sporting clubs<lb />
for events.<lb />
Matthews said the requisition for<lb />
the SWFA came to his office, but it was<lb />
later withdrawn.<lb />
"I questioned the procedures, not<lb />
the validity Matthews said.<lb />

The East Carolinian<lb />
Evacuees return home<lb />
(AP) - Evacuees were allowed<lb />
back home Saturday as exhausted<lb />
firefighters cleaned up a wind-driven<lb />
forest fire that had threatened high-<lb />
priced beach resort communities in<lb />
Eastport, N.Y.<lb />
Authorities said the 6,000-acre<lb />
blaze looked like arson, and critics<lb />
asked why promised federal airplanes<lb />
didn't arrive in time to help.<lb />
The sky was bright blue Satur-<lb />
day, minus the thick billows of smoke<lb />
that clouded eastern Long Island for<lb />
two days. Bulldozers had been used<lb />
to create a dirt ring around the pe-<lb />
rimeter of the 5-mile by 1.5-mile fire<lb />
zone.<lb />
Nonetheless, officials balked at<lb />
declaring the fire contained because<lb />
of the slight chance that it could flare<lb />
up again without warning in the midst<lb />
of million-dollar real estate. The area<lb />
<lb />
.<lb />
has not had rain in 19 days.<lb />
"It's amazing that we've lost over<lb />
6,000 acres at this point, and we've<lb />
not had a single fatality said Gov.<lb />
George Pataki. Some 40 firefighters<lb />
suffered an assortment of minor inju-<lb />
ries.<lb />
However, the blaze feeding on tin-<lb />
der-dry pines and oaks some 70 miles<lb />
east of New York City had destroyed<lb />
one home and a lumber yard, dam-<lb />
aged seven other homes and a train<lb />
station, and shut down railroads and<lb />
roadways.<lb />
Shortly after noon Saturday, some<lb />
400 evacuated Westhampton residents<lb />
got permission to return home. Some<lb />
had spent two nights sleeping in high<lb />
school gyms or even their cars.<lb />
Tourist business was getting back<lb />
to normal on the summer's<lb />
penultimate weekend, as visitors re-<lb />
turned to expensive summer h mes<lb />
and resorts.<lb />
Most highways and the Long Is-<lb />
land Rail Road had reopened, although<lb />
a section of the Sunrise Highway, the<lb />
main connection to the Hamptons, was<lb />
still closed as crews worked to clean<lb />
up the last embers.<lb />
Public accepts Clinton's<lb />
campaign against tobacco<lb />
(AP) - Most Americans oprjose<lb />
some of President Clinton's aggressive<lb />
efforts to shield teen-agers from to-<lb />
bacco advertising and promotion, an<lb />
Associated Press poll found.<lb />
Fifty-eight percent reject a pro-<lb />
posed ban on tobacco brand names<lb />
on T-shirts or in sporting events such<lb />
as auto racing's Winston Cup or the<lb />
Virginia Slims Tennis Tournament<lb />
And 53 percent oppose allowing only<lb />
black-and-white text on tobacco bill-<lb />
boards and in cigarette advertise-<lb />
ments in magazines read by many<lb />
young people.<lb />
Clinton ordered those restric-<lb />
tions Aug. 10 with the goal of cutting<lb />
teen-age smoking in half. The tobacco<lb />
industry immediately challenged him<lb />
in court. The Food and Drug Admin-<lb />
istration could begin writing the regu-<lb />
lations in November unless stopped<lb />
by the courts or Congress.<lb />
The poll of 1,007 adults, taken<lb />
Aug. 16-20, finds relatively weak sup-<lb />
port for the premise behind the regu-<lb />
lations. Only 40 percent agree un-<lb />
equivocally mat the tobacco compa-<lb />
nies actively use advertising and pro-<lb />
motion to try to get youngsters to<lb />
start smoking.<lb />
Forty-five percent adhere to the<lb />
tobacco company argument that ads<lb />
are mostly aimed at promoting brands<lb />
to people who already smoke.<lb />
"The president and the FDA com-<lb />
missioner both said very clearly and<lb />
loudly that they believe this advertis-<lb />
ing is targeted at kids. Well, appar-<lb />
ently, the public is not ready to buy<lb />
that assertion said Walker<lb />
Merryman, vice president of The To-<lb />
bacco Institute, an industry group<lb />
based in Washington.<lb />
The results are based on tele-<lb />
phone polling by ICR Survey Research<lb />
Group of Media, Pa part of AUS Con-<lb />
sultants. The margin of sampling er-<lb />
ror is plus or minus 3 percentage<lb />
points.<lb />
The sale of tobacco to minors is<lb />
illegal, and past polls have made clear<lb />
that the public is concerned that chil-<lb />
dren nevertheless find ways to smoke<lb />
and are starting at younger ages.<lb />
Some remedies included in the regu-<lb />
lations, such as a ban on cigarette<lb />
vending machines, have been popu-<lb />
lar in past surveys.<lb />
In the AP poll, 73 percent sup-<lb />
port Clinton's proposal that the to-<lb />
bacco industry be required to spend<lb />
$150 million a year on a campaign to<lb />
discourage teen-age smoking. Even 65<lb />
percent of smokers support that idea,<lb />
which the tobacco industry is fight-<lb />
ing as an illegal tax.<lb />
"What these numbers do show<lb />
is a solid base of support for reduc-<lb />
ing the appeal of these products to<lb />
our children said FDA spokesman<lb />
Jim O'Hara.<lb />
He said a study by the federal<lb />
Centers for Disease Control and Pre-<lb />
vention found that 86 percent of un-<lb />
derage smokers who purchase their<lb />
own cigarettes buy one of the three<lb />
most heavily advertised brands.<lb />

vantages for students, and that a<lb />
detailed analysis revealed that such<lb />
a system is not cost effective for stu-<lb />
dents when all variables are taken<lb />
into consideration.<lb />
"One of the first things that has<lb />
to be considered is book availability<lb />
Mahalek said, "and this is where the<lb />
size of the school makes a real dif-<lb />
ference, that and the fact that some<lb />
students want to be able to keep their<lb />
books. So the university is faced with<lb />
the problem of keeping the right<lb />
number of books available.<lb />
"Then you have to consider<lb />
those materials that are not eligible<lb />
to be included in the rental system<lb />
like lab manuals and workbooks with<lb />
tear-out pages, and lately there has<lb />
been a growth in products with CD-<lb />

According to Mahalek, the list of<lb />
reasons against having a rental sys-<lb />
tem goes on and on, but the system<lb />
seems to be working for at least one<lb />
university TEC came in contact with.<lb />
Appalachian State University<lb />
(ASU) has had a book rental system<lb />
since 1940 and has had no thoughts<lb />
to abandon the system to begin sell-<lb />
ing books.<lb />
"The area was more rural 50<lb />
some years ago, and the system was<lb />
geared more to the benefit of poorer<lb />
students, those students who grew<lb />
up on farms said John George, the<lb />
current but retiring textbook man-<lb />
ager at ASU.<lb />
"So far, we've had no real prob-<lb />
lems with the system, and it seems<lb />
to be working well for students. It<lb />
helps keep their expenses down<lb />
George added.<lb />
George said that as the univer-<lb />
sity grew, they just kept the same sys-<lb />
tem. Students pay a fee of $49 per<lb />
semester in order to rent books. Book<lb />
rentals are only available during fall<lb />
and spring. During summer school,<lb />
the books are for sale.<lb />
According to George and to Jack<lb />
Edwards, owners of UBE in down-<lb />
town Greenville, one of the keys to<lb />
a successful book rental system is<lb />
faculty cooperation. George said<lb />
that in order for a book to be ap-<lb />
proved for the rental system, all<lb />
teachers teaching the same subject<lb />
must agree to use that same book<lb />
for three years.<lb />
"Can you really see all of the<lb />
English teachers teaching the same<lb />
course (with the exception of maybe<lb />
the 1100 and 1200 levels) agreeing<lb />
on one book? 1 can't Edwards said.<lb />
"Book renting restricts the free-<lb />
dom of the faculty. No professor who<lb />
is a renowned expert in his field is<lb />
going to agree to using the same<lb />
book for three years<lb />
"Professors want to be able to<lb />
introduce cutting-edge information,<lb />
to use newer materials as they be-<lb />
come available, especially in com-<lb />
puter classes Edwards said. "With<lb />
technology and things changing so<lb />
rapidly, a rental system would just<lb />
hinder the process of the university<lb />
as a whole<lb />
Edwards estimates that starting<lb />
a rental system which would provide<lb />
enough books for ECU'S entire stu-<lb />
dent body would cost somewhere in<lb />
the neighborhood of $3 million.<lb />
Since students would be renting in-<lb />
stead of buying, there would be a<lb />
fund lay-out that could cause the<lb />
university to lose money in the form<lb />
of scholarships and book store<lb />
grants.<lb />
"I don't think any cutting-edge,<lb />
leading university can afford to op-<lb />
erate on a book rental system<lb />
Edwards said, "and if ECU is to con-<lb />
tinue to be a leading university,<lb />
these things have to be taken into<lb />
consideration<lb />
These factors hold the answer<lb />
to the $3 million question.<lb />
ECU will continue to sell books<lb />
instead of renting and thus continue<lb />
to offer faculty and students the use<lb />
of new and updated materials as<lb />
they become available.<lb />
Unfortunately, textbooks are an<lb />
expensive but necessary part of the<lb />
university experience.<lb />
to improve information flow throughout<lb />
the organization.<lb />
Vice President Dale Emery is plan-<lb />
ning to produce an appropriation packet<lb />
to make funding an easier process for<lb />
clubs on campus. SGA still has several<lb />
thousand dollars left unappropriated<lb />
from last year.<lb />
Treasurer Angie Nix wants to bring<lb />
all SGA recognized organizations closer<lb />
together through the Internet<lb />
"My goal for the project is for bet-<lb />
ter communications across campus Nix<lb />
said. She hopes to broadcast information<lb />
such as deadlines for appropriations and<lb />
billings.<lb />
Eastman said the executive council<lb />
approved $6,000 in appropriatioins this<lb />
summer, $12,000 less than last year's<lb />
summer council.<lb />
Nix said since no legislature is held<lb />
during the summer months, the execu-<lb />
tive committee decides on what appro-<lb />
priations can be made.<lb />
"(Emery, President Ian Eastman<lb />
and myself are the legislature, but in the<lb />
fall, the legislation also votes on the de-<lb />
cisions made during the summer Nix<lb />
said.<lb />
Eastman said a new branch of SGA<lb />
known as the Graduate Student Advi-<lb />
sory Council (GSAC), will provide fund-<lb />
ing for graduate organizations.<lb />
"Craduate students need to be rec-<lb />
ognized in order to help continue with<lb />
their growth Eastman said.<lb />
Nix said GSAC should receive<lb />
around $17,000 a year to fund appro-<lb />
priations for graduate organizations. The<lb />
money came from a reduction in SGA's<lb />
budget<lb />
Executive council members feel<lb />
strongly about establishing orientation<lb />
sessions for the fall legislature.<lb />

MINORITY from page 1<lb />
with the Maryland ruling said Dr.<lb />
Brian Haynes, director of minority<lb />
student affairs, "The thing is this,<lb />
we've got to figure out if in fact we<lb />
are out of line.<lb />
"Let me say what I mean. One<lb />
of the things that came out clearly<lb />
in that ruling is that that particu-<lb />
lar ruling only affected the<lb />
Bannaker Scholarships at the Uni-<lb />
versity of Maryland).<lb />
"So, we don't know how that<lb />
impacts what we're trying to do<lb />
here. We just don't know the direc-<lb />
tion that the program will head<lb />
next year. I will say though, as an<lb />
institution we are committed to pro-<lb />
grams of this nature, but we are re-<lb />
quired by law to bring programs<lb />
into compliance. While it might<lb />
appear that we're pulling away from<lb />
the program, I can assure you we<lb />
are very, very committed to these<lb />
issues<lb />
The Chancellor's Minority Stu-<lb />

in existence for five years and av-<lb />
erages 14 to 15 student partici-<lb />

Currently, 14 students are par-<lb />
ticipating in the program.<lb />
"We awarded these scholar-<lb />
ships prior to the ruling and be-<lb />
cause of that we had to honor these<lb />
scholarships for this year Haynes<lb />
said. "These students are receiving<lb />
scholarship money and are actively<lb />
participating in the program<lb />
Each student receives a one-<lb />
time $1,000 scholarship and partici-<lb />

A number of these students<lb />

Our View<lb />
t<lb />
Just like any<lb />
argument, the<lb />
smoking issue<lb />
has two sides.<lb />
So, who's<lb />
right?<lb />
For a smoker, there's nothing better than that first, long<lb />
drag off a cigarette. For a non-smoker, there's nothing more<lb />
annoying.<lb />
At its heart, this is the real conflict of America's great<lb />
smoking debate. People can argue all they want about the<lb />
rights of smokers versus the rights of non-smokers, but<lb />
that's what it's all about. When you get right down to it,<lb />
smokers like to smoke and non-smokers don't.<lb />
Remove all the political hand grenades about second-<lb />
hand smoke and the plight of the tobacco farmer, and you're<lb />
left with a simple difference of opinion. But it's a tough<lb />
difference to resolve. After a long and fruitless debate here<lb />
in the TEC offices, we're left with a stalemate.<lb />
But this is an important issue, and we felt some kind of<lb />
stand needed to be taken. So how about this? Let's look at<lb />
both sides of the issue. First, we have the smoker's point of<lb />
view:<lb />
I love my cigarettes. Smoking is more than a habit, it's<lb />
a way of life. Sometimes a cigarette is the only thing that<lb />
gets me through a tedious day filled with tension, frustra-<lb />
tion and the dirty looks of non-smokers who need to lighten<lb />
up and get off my back. Smoking looks cool, it soothes my<lb />
jangled nerves and I'm freaking addicted to it so leave me<lb />
the hell alone!<lb />
And now, here's the non-smoker's perspective:<lb />
Cigarettes stink. I mean, they smell like they would cause<lb />
cancer, and that just pisses me off. Every time I walk into<lb />
the same room as a smoker, the stench settles into my<lb />
clothes, hair and skin and I smell like death all day. It gives<lb />
me a headache, costs me a fortune in sinus medicine, and<lb />
just generally grates my nerves so get the hell out of my<lb />
sight!<lb />
How do we bring these two warring camps together?<lb />
Well, designated smoking areas are a good idea, as long<lb />
as they're not too inconvenient. Placing smoking areas out-<lb />
side, for example, just isn't fair to smokers; they freeze in<lb />
the winter and boil in the summer. As long as the smoking<lb />
area is comfortable and nearby, smokers shouldn't bitch.<lb />
Neither should non-smokers. Just because you may have<lb />
to walk by the smoking area on the way to the bathroom is<lb />
no reason to complain. That kind of contact is too minimal<lb />
to be important, and at least it's not right on top of you.<lb />
Basically what we're saying is, compromise. Don't get<lb />
your head stuck so far up your butt that you can't give up<lb />
some ground. Trust us, it'll make your life a lot simpler.<lb />
A Red-Tape Lynching Party<lb />
Special-interest groups are often<lb />
one of the biggest targets of the great<lb />
witch-hunt of public ridicule. Thanks to<lb />
the cartooning effect of the media spe-<lb />
cifically in movies and television, the<lb />
concept of protest and activism has been<lb />
painted up like a Barnum & Bailey<lb />
clown and relegated to the vacuum of<lb />
Saturday mornings and hippie-bashing<lb />
films.<lb />
The cliches arc seemingly iron-<lb />
clad. Protesters are radical agitators who<lb />
have nothing better to do than wave<lb />
their placards and shout Anyone who<lb />
voices their opinion that the world looks<lb />
just fine the way it is and doesn't need<lb />
a huge crack down the middle, cour-<lb />
tesy of a cluster of nuclear blasts, is filed<lb />
away under the meat-abhorring, blissed-<lb />
out peacnik moniker. Environmentalists<lb />
are a pack of self-righteous recyclers<lb />
who weep every time a tree gets cut<lb />
down.<lb />
Hard labels, indeed, but ones that<lb />
are comfortable. After all, they've given<lb />
us many laughs, and it's good to be able<lb />
to laugh at a society that would send<lb />
us screaming up the nearest light pole<lb />
to perch at the top, gibbering incoher-<lb />
ently, if we had to take it all too seri-<lb />
ously.<lb />
The problem is that often the seri-<lb />
ousness of an issue becomes obscured,<lb />
and the human element gets lost in the<lb />
joke. These groups that we laugh about<lb />
over beers arc comprised of individuals<lb />
selflessly dedicated to something they<lb />
believe in, and many have either fallen<lb />
by the side or are facing the chopping<lb />
block now.<lb />
This month of September will see<lb />
the trial of Captain Paul Watson, the<lb />
founder of the Sea Shepard Conserva-<lb />
tion Society. He has been charged with<lb />
three counts of criminal mischief in a<lb />
July 1992 confrontation with a Cuban-<lb />
flagged trawler off the Grand Banks, and<lb />
in the worse case scenario faces up to<lb />
two life sentences, plus 10 years, if con-<lb />
victed.<lb />
Against the repeated warnings of<lb />
conservationists, largtscale "drag trawl-<lb />

Often the<lb />

northern cod by hauling in tons of fish<lb />
directly from their spawning ground.<lb />
February 1992 saw the cessation of fish-<lb />
ing by Canadian cod trawlers due to the<lb />
scarcity of the fish, followed by an in-<lb />
definite moratorium declared by the in-<lb />
shore fishery.<lb />
Foreign trawlers, however, contin-<lb />
ued to haul in catches just outside of<lb />
Canada's 200-mile limit in international<lb />
waters, where, of course, the govern-<lb />
ment has no jurisdiction. The situation<lb />
worsened, when the Canadian Dept of<lb />
Fisheries and Oceans effectively render-<lb />
ing unemployed the in-shore fishermen,<lb />
who had relied on the hook-and-line<lb />
method from small boats.<lb />
Acting under the UN World Char-<lb />
ter for Nature, Captain Watson and a<lb />
crew of 27 volunteers set sail aboard<lb />
the Cleveland Amory for the Grand<lb />
Banks to intercept the Cuban-flagged<lb />
trawler Rio Las Casas before it could<lb />
lower its nets. Via radio, Watson, em-<lb />
powered with the authority of the Char-<lb />
ter, requested that the Casas cease its<lb />
activities and return to its home port<lb />
The Casas was ready to comply,<lb />
and the incident might have ended<lb />
there, but a Canadian Fisheries Patrol<lb />
vessel radioed the trawler that it could<lb />
continue its operation. When the Casas<lb />
again began to lower its nets, the Amory<lb />
crossed their stern, noi to damage the<lb />
other ship, but to force it to raise its<lb />
nets.<lb />
At the RCMP's urging, the Cubans<lb />
pressed charges against Watson for en-<lb />
dangering their ship and their lives,<lb />
and the Coast Guard informed Watson<lb />
that he was to be placed under arrest<lb />
Watson agreed to surrender himself af-<lb />
ter first crossing the Tail and Nose of<lb />
the Grand Banks "to inform and drag-<lb />
gers that we think they should leave<lb />
the Banks Later the same day, follow-<lb />
ing a verbal exchange between Watson<lb />
and a Spanish dragger fleet, the RCMP<lb />
boarded the Amory, arrested Watson,<lb />
and towed his ship to port<lb />
Watson was charged with two<lb />
counts of endangering the Casas and<lb />
its crew, and one count for endanger-<lb />
ing the lives of his own crew, none of<lb />
which claimed felt they were in any real<lb />
danger.<lb />
Twelve days after Watson's 1994<lb />
arraignment and pre-trial hearing, Fish-<lb />
eries Dept officers boarded the Pana-<lb />
manian trawler Kristina Logos, which<lb />
was 28 miles outside Canada's 200-mile<lb />
limit, ordered it to port and confiscated<lb />
its 100-ton catch of cod and flounder.<lb />
This past March, a Canadian patrol<lb />
ship fired a machine gun across the bow<lb />
of the Spanish trawler Estai, then seized<lb />
the vessel and its catch. Canada has<lb />
refused to recognize the International<lb />
Court of the Hague's jurisdiction in the<lb />
200-mile limit and upholds a policy of<lb />
seizing foreign trawlers in the interests<lb />
of protecting its Atlantic fisheries.<lb />
Paul Watson appeared to have beat<lb />
the CDFO to the punch. In the next<lb />
three weeks, he will go to trial and<lb />
though he never fired a single shot<lb />
damaged no property and did not board<lb />
another ship, faces life in prison. It ap-<lb />
pears now that one man is more easily<lb />
prosecuted than the gray area of an<lb />
entire government. These next few<lb />
weeks will tell if he will be more easily<lb />
condemned as well.<lb />

No respect for pizza man<lb />
Running across the room sliding<lb />
on pieces of mushrooms and bits of<lb />
cheese, Billy is in a traumatic state.<lb />
"Answer the phone. Top the pizzas.<lb />
Find out where Landmark street is<lb />
Fred the Manager says you need to<lb />
mop the floor and wash whatever<lb />
dishes are left in the back room<lb />
Tucked under one arm is a big red<lb />
bag carrying five pizzas, two orders<lb />
of wings, and an extra large order of<lb />
bread sticks. Billy unlocks the door<lb />
of his car with the other hand, and<lb />
sits down into the seat Turning the<lb />
key, steam from a small hole in the<lb />
top of the bag fogs up the rear view<lb />
mirror. Billy steps on the gas pedal<lb />
and drives off into the night<lb />
This scene occurs 50 times a<lb />
night in the life of a pizza delivery<lb />
driver. I like to call him: The Italian<lb />
Pie Crusader.<lb />
This person is a special breed. He<lb />
has been created with the ability to<lb />
withstand any kind of pressure.<lb />
Screaming children at birthday par-<lb />
ties, huge gorilla pit bulls in trailer<lb />
parks, and even the ungrateful dorm<lb />
resident cannot discourage the true<lb />
IPC.<lb />
So why are these sign-toteing<lb />
angels of mercy treated like trash.<lb />
People actually try to cheat the pizza<lb />
guy. Like Rodney Dangerfield they get<lb />
" no respect" I'll give you an example.<lb />
On a recent Saturday night a pizza<lb />
guyor IPCmade a trip to Wilson<lb />
Acres apartment complex. The name<lb />
and address of the accused have been<lb />
omitted to protect all of those in-<lb />
volved. This was a trip in which a<lb />
medium pizza was to be delivered. The<lb />
customer opted to prepay by credit<lb />
card over the phone, this meant that<lb />
the only thing that was needed from<lb />
the customer upon reception of his<lb />
pizza was a signature. Sounds simple,<lb />
right?<lb />
Somehow, when this dedicated<lb />
driver arrived at the door there was<lb />
no receipt Here's the dilemma. Does<lb />
the driver leave the pizza and risk<lb />
paying for it if he cannot get the sig-<lb />
nature? Well, this driver, concerned<lb />
solely about the needs of the cus-<lb />
tomer, decided that he would leave the<lb />
Patrick Ware<lb />
Opinion Columnist<lb />
The customer<lb />
was climbing<lb />
from the<lb />
neighbor's<lb />
balcony to avoid<lb />
payment<lb />
pizza in good faith that upon his re-<lb />
turn, the customer would render a<lb />
signature, and all would be well.<lb />
After finishing his run the driver<lb />
returned to the store, put the slip into<lb />
his pocket and made an extra trip out<lb />
to the home of this soon-to-be delin-<lb />
quent His only thought in mind: get<lb />
this finished so that you can get back<lb />
to the other needy people of<lb />
Greenville.<lb />
When this IPC arrived at Wilson<lb />
Acres he saw the customer walking<lb />
to the neighbors apartment Okay,<lb />
just knock on the door of this other<lb />
guy and you can get your signature,<lb />
he thought<lb />
" Is the guy from next door here?<lb />
I need him to sign this receipt for the<lb />
pizza that he bought said the IPC<lb />
to the belligerent college attitude<lb />
monger.<lb />
" Nope, he's not here As he said<lb />
this his eyes shifted to a point out of<lb />
sight to the pizza driver and focused<lb />
on someone, no doubt, hiding in the<lb />
closet. At this point the tired, hon-<lb />
est, apple-pie-loving driver understood<lb />
that he was in the process of being<lb />
shafted. The sound of the door slam-<lb />
ming in his face echoed through out<lb />
the complex.<lb />
Driving away in disgust, the IPC<lb />
happened to wipe the fog from his<lb />
mirror. What he saw was a picture of<lb />
complete immaturity and disrespect<lb />
The customer was climbing from the<lb />
neighbor's balcony back to his own<lb />
in an obvious attempt to avoid pay-<lb />
ment. Honking and screaming, the<lb />
Driver spun around and tried to ver-<lb />
bally persuade this misguided deviant<lb />
to change his course of action. The<lb />
sliding door closed on the balcony and<lb />
the curtain was drawn.<lb />
The moral of this story is not for<lb />
the pizza driver. This is not a call to<lb />
arms for IPCs to change their ways.<lb />
This is a wake up call for all of the<lb />
abusers out there who take the pizza<lb />
man for granted. Think of all of those<lb />
nights when you were studying late<lb />
and a trip to the local fast food res-<lb />
taurant might have meant a letter<lb />
grade off of your test score. Think of<lb />
the nights when you came home from<lb />
drowning yourself downtown and the<lb />
pizza man showed up in twenty min-<lb />
utes instead of thirty minutes. Remem-<lb />
ber the satisfaction of having a giant<lb />
pizza delivered to you while watching<lb />
a game on TV, never having to move<lb />
an inch because the pizza guy set your<lb />
lunch on the table beside you. Is there<lb />
no end to this charity?<lb />
You must love your pizza guy.<lb />
Next time he comes to your door find<lb />
out what his name is. Ask him to sit<lb />
down. Offer him a refreshment It is<lb />
the understanding of this writer that<lb />
most pizza guys don't want a slice of<lb />
what they have just brought you.<lb />
They will decline because of their<lb />
duty, but it is the thought that<lb />
counts. Tip your pizza guy. They<lb />
don't need much. Just show them<lb />
that they are appreciated.<lb />
Billy takes the plastic sign off of<lb />
his window and tips his cap up. The<lb />
birds are singing and soon it will be<lb />
morning. Walking into the store one<lb />
final time, he turns the lights off and<lb />
locks the door. In three hours he will<lb />
be in GCB. Rolling down the win-<lb />
dow driving home, he notices that<lb />
the traffic lights have come back<lb />
from their six hour slumber. Just a<lb />
few hours ago they had begun blink-<lb />
ing as tbey do in many small towns<lb />
at eleven o'clock. Tonight he has<lb />
served his fellow citizens. Tomorrow<lb />
he will do it all over again. The ques-<lb />
tion is, are we willing to be human<lb />
to this hard working public servant?<lb />
Can we love our pizza guys? I say<lb />
yes we can.<lb />
Letters to the Editor<lb />
To The Editor:<lb />
This is in response to the sec-<lb />
tion in the August 22 East Carolin-<lb />
ian in which you provide the new<lb />
students information about each<lb />
club in Greenville. I recently read<lb />
that where O'Rocks once was (RIP),<lb />
there is tentatively going to be a<lb />
dance club. I would like to make a<lb />
suggestion to the owners and op-<lb />
erators of this soon to be new es-<lb />
tablishment. I can't speak for the<lb />
whole population of Greenville, but<lb />
I can speak for the amount of<lb />
people I know.<lb />
My friends and I found it al-<lb />
most necessary to leave town the<lb />
first weekend that school was back<lb />
in session because our choice in<lb />
Greenville have become limited to<lb />
top 40, country and alternative.<lb />
I am not saying that any of this<lb />
is bad. But I'm sure that there are<lb />
people out there who would like to<lb />
go to a dance club and hear some-<lb />
thing different that the teeny-<lb />
bopper tunes that you hear every<lb />
our on the radio playing nightly in<lb />
not only one of the dance clubs in<lb />
Greenville, but all except the Pad-<lb />
dock Club. If Club Rumors in Jack-<lb />
sonville (a cheezy Marine pick-up<lb />
joint) can play decent dance music,<lb />
then I strongly believe that<lb />
Greenville could manage to have it<lb />
somewhere. Being from a big city,<lb />
I can understand the diversity of<lb />
people's needs, likes and dislikes. I<lb />
hope that 1 can open the minds of<lb />
dance club owners in Greenville and<lb />
maybe someone will try something<lb />
different.<lb />

Former Brady<lb />
pays ECU a visit<lb />
tomorrow night<lb />
Dale Williamson<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Here's a story of a hunky Brady,<lb />
who is making an appearance at ECU.<lb />
That's right, Barry Williams,<lb />
a.k.a. Greg Brady, is going to be<lb />
speaking in Hendrix Theatre tomor-<lb />
row night at 8 p.m.<lb />
Most any TV junkie knows the<lb />
sensation that is "The Brady Bunch<lb />
in the early 1970s, the Brady's cre-<lb />
ated their own slice of Americana,<lb />
and their power is still felt today. The<lb />
show is still in syndication, and last<lb />
year fans witnessed the success of<lb />
The Brady Bunch Movie.<lb />
Barry Williams has enjoyed<lb />
much success from his association<lb />
Vith the Bradymania that is sweep-<lb />
ing the nation. His book Growing Up<lb />
Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg, was<lb />
on The New York Times Bestseller<lb />
List for over three months, and his<lb />
lectureperformance tour is pulling<lb />
in crowds from all walks of life.<lb />
Williams' road to success started<lb />
early in his life, when he landed his<lb />
first acting part in a school documen-<lb />
tary called "Johnny Can Read From<lb />
there, he went on to appear in such<lb />
shows as "Dragnet "That Girl and<lb />
"Comer Pyle Finally, in 1966, Will-<lb />
iams found out about this show<lb />
called "The Brady Bunch and he<lb />
beat out hundreds of other hopefuls<lb />
to win the part of Greg.<lb />
While modern audiences may<lb />
mock the show, "The Brady Bunch"<lb />
did branch into unexplored areas of<lb />
television. As Brady creator<lb />
Sherwood Schwartz points out in<lb />
Williams' book, TV was filled with<lb />
married couples as well as widows<lb />
and widowers, but "there wasn't any<lb />
show before "The Brady Bunch"<lb />
that revolved around the marital<lb />
amalgamation of two preexisting<lb />
families This was an area the Bradys<lb />
dared to conquer.<lb />
The show enjoyed five strong<lb />
seasons and made the Brady kids a<lb />
marketable item. The Brady kids, lead<lb />
by a dashing and sexy Greg, were ev-<lb />
erywhere: on lunch boxes, magazine<lb />
covers, dolls, coloring books, you<lb />
name it. They were so hot that ABC<lb />
produced a Saturday morning car-<lb />
toon show based on their escapades<lb />
with a talking, magical bird. Not only<lb />
that, but the Brady kids were also<lb />
transformed into a hit singing group<lb />
that sang such hip tunes as "Ameri-<lb />
can Pie<lb />
The Brady's were so strong that<lb />
even when the show was canceled,<lb />
they kept coming back from the dead.<lb />
Shortly after "The Brady Bunch<lb />
there was "The Brady Bunch Hour<lb />
which, according to Williams, fea-<lb />
tured the Brady's "devoting their<lb />
lives to putting on the best darn va-<lb />
riety show ever As nifty as that may<lb />
sound, Williams goes on to point out<lb />

When most great songwriting<lb />
duos decide that they want to try pur-<lb />
suing individual solo careers, the re-<lb />
sults are usually pale imitations of the<lb />
inspired work that the duo could cre-<lb />
ate together or, worse yet they pro-<lb />
duce complete crap.<lb />
Case in point, look at the solo<lb />
careers of Robert Plant and Jimmy<lb />
PJtge, neither of whom were able to<lb />
niatch the brilliance of their Led Zep-<lb />
pelin writing when they went out on<lb />
tteir own. Mick Jagger and Keith<lb />
Richards have also released solo ma-<lb />
terial that fails to create the magic<lb />
that's found in their Rolling Stones<lb />
songs. This is not the case with Jay<lb />
Flarrar and Jeff Tweedy, the<lb />
songwriting partners of Uncle Tupelo.<lb />
Uncle Tupelo was the Reese's<lb />
Peanut Butter Cup of bands: "Two<lb />
great tastes that taste great together<lb />
They make for a wonderful blend, but<lb />
tliey are two great individual tastes,<lb />
as well. When Uncle Tupelo split up<lb />
(fpr whatever reasons), Jay Farrar<lb />
wjent on to start his new band, Son<lb />
Volt, and Jeff Tweedy and the rest of<lb />
Uncle Tupelo began their new group,<lb />
Wilco.<lb />
; Some of you may have seen Wilco<lb />
pjay at this year's H.O.R.D.E. Festi-<lb />
val, or caught them as the opening<lb />
act on the Jayhawks' last tour. If you<lb />
did, and you liked their music, then<lb />
you'll definitely like S& Volt<lb />
; Whereas Wilco is smooth, sugary<lb />
ai)d rich like chocolate, Son Volt is<lb />
chunky, sticky and thick like peanut<lb />

makes this album so good. It has a<lb />

Have you ever heard of Sarah<lb />
McLachlan? How about Iris Dement?<lb />
No? Well Jane Kelly Williams fits, like<lb />
them, into the category of "Best New<lb />
Female Singer That You Will Never<lb />
Hear About"<lb />
Why is that? Before we answer<lb />
that question, let's discuss why Will-<lb />
iams is so talented.<lb />
Considering the popular music<lb />
that has grabbed our attention in the<lb />
past few months, Williams steers away<lb />
from angst-ridden Courtney Love,<lb />
Alanis Morrisette and the ranks of the<lb />
female 'rage' groups.<lb />
Williams takes on a mix of perso-<lb />
nas, but at the same time establishes<lb />
herself as an artist and songwriter.<lb />
Inspiring vocals and rhythms ranging<lb />
from an acoustic guitar to eclectic<lb />
drumbeats, Williams sounds very<lb />
much like Natalie Merchant but with-<lb />
out the nasally inflections. Other<lb />
times she sounds like Sheryl Crow,<lb />
especially on "Emotional Memory<lb />
Tapping the Wheel is a retrospec-<lb />
tive album that was developed on in-<lb />
spiration from everyday surroundings.<lb />
Williams takes several songs and<lb />
mixes her melodic voice into the<lb />
songs' rhythmic patterns.<lb />
Williams, who has a retarded<lb />
younger brother, Walter, wrote the<lb />
lyrics to "Carry Him which is the<lb />
best song on the album. Her concern<lb />
for his well-being is revealed as she<lb />
sings "I would like to fly with him<lb />
send a dove for me carry him for<lb />
me 'cause I can't find what he<lb />
needs<lb />
Williams comes from a southern<lb />

Any science fiction fans out<lb />
there? Anybody interested in gender<lb />

haven't read a romance in a long time<lb />
but are starving to? Ursula K.<lb />
LeGuin's Four<lb />
Ways to Forgive-<lb />
ness has something<lb />
for everybody.<lb />
This book does<lb />
require a little pa-<lb />
tience. LeGuin uses<lb />
somewhat the same<lb />
approach in this<lb />
work that she did in<lb />
Always Coming<lb />
Home which<lb />
means there's a<lb />
glossary of terms in<lb />
ne back and his-<lb />
torical notes on the<lb />
cultures she writes<lb />
about LeGuin has<lb />
created a very believable reality in this<lb />
book, a reality that sucks you right<lb />
in.<lb />
However, it is also an alien real-<lb />
ity and it's hard to get a handle on<lb />
what's happening at first It's not easy<lb />
to remember what the rules are and<lb />
what's going on the class structure<lb />
that LeGuin depicts, but that's be-<lb />
cause the reality of the work is so<lb />
solid. The reality within this book is<lb />
intricate and textured. LeGuin main-<lb />
tains the integrity of this fictional<lb />
reality by not writing down to her<lb />
readers and explaining every little<lb />
thing. This has a strong effect It gives<lb />
the reader the impression that the<lb />
book was not written for himher, but<lb />
that it is a record of something real,<lb />
almost like a history book.<lb />
Four people are focused on in the<lb />
four sections of the novel. They re-<lb />
veal to us the politics and cultural<lb />
ways of life inherent in living on the<lb />
worlds of Hain, Werel and Yeowe. In<lb />
"Betrayals an<lb />
old woman<lb />
named Yoss be-<lb />
friends the<lb />
fallen leader of<lb />
the slave upris-<lb />
ing on Yeowe.<lb />
Around Yoss we<lb />
see the disillu-<lb />
sion that comes<lb />
in the wake of<lb />
any great battle<lb />
to liberate and<lb />
save the world.<lb />
Abberkam, the<lb />
leader who fell<lb />
LeGuin maintains<lb />
the integrity of<lb />
this fictional<lb />
reality by not<lb />
writing down to<lb />
her readers and<lb />
explaining every<lb />
little thing.<lb />
because of his<lb />
corruption, finds that in the aftermath<lb />
of his fall from grace the kindness of<lb />
Yoss opens within him the potential<lb />
for a new beginning.<lb />
In "Forgiveness Day we meet<lb />
the Hainish envoy to Werel, a woman<lb />
named Solly. She quickly grows frus-<lb />
trated with the Werelian attitude to-<lb />
ward women, which is a lot like the<lb />
attitude toward women that existed<lb />
here a hundred years ago. She resents<lb />
the fact that she must have a body-<lb />
guard, and extends that resentment<lb />
to the man himself. This man is Teyeo,<lb />
and he resents the envoy's ignorance<lb />
of his culture.<lb />
However, these two wind up get-<lb />
ting kidnapped and held prisoner for<lb />
a while, and things get worked out<lb />
over the period of time that they<lb />
spend together. This is an interesting<lb />
story of how prejudice can be dis-<lb />
solved and replaced with intimacy.<lb />
In "A Man of the People we<lb />
watch a man named Havzhiva grow<lb />
up in and leave the insular, small com-<lb />
munity he was born in on Hain. He<lb />
goes on to become an envoy to Yeowe,<lb />
and there he finds his destiny in the<lb />
fight to liberate the women of that<lb />
planet. Yeowe began as a slave colony,<lb />
and in the aftermath of revolt and lib-<lb />
eration its women struggle to over-<lb />
come the legacy of being slaves of<lb />
slaves. The men of Yeowe are as much<lb />
oppressors as the slave owners they<lb />
drove out<lb />
"A Woman's Liberation" exam-<lb />
ines, the life of the woman who even-<lb />
tually marries Havzhiva. Here we get<lb />
a closer look at what it's like to exist<lb />
as the slave of a slave. This character,<lb />
Rakam, tells us that "It is in our bod-<lb />
ies that we lose or begin our freedom,<lb />
in our bodies that we accept or end<lb />
our slavery<lb />
This reflects the major lesson of<lb />
the book - that greater society is re-<lb />
flected in the relationships between<lb />
men and women, so oppression will<lb />
always exist unless it can be eradicated<lb />
on that level.<lb />
Four Ways to Forgiveness is<lb />
thought provoking and emotionally<lb />
appealing; a very good read if you can<lb />
have the patience to get into it<lb />
"A Drop in the Bucket" is<lb />
just what it claims to be: a very<lb />
tiny drop in the great scream-<lb />
ing bucket of American media<lb />
opinion. Take it as you will.<lb />

Noon Day Tunes is one of Student<lb />
Activities programs continuing into the<lb />
fall semester. Surprisingly high student<lb />
support for the program is the reason<lb />
for its continued life this year.<lb />
The first Noon Day Tunes for this<lb />
semester kicked off last Wednesday with<lb />
a performance by musician Victor<lb />
Hudson. Tomorrow, Virginia solo musi-<lb />
cian and storyteller Michael Mulvaney<lb />
will entertain and amuse students on<lb />
the brick patio of Mendenhall Student<lb />
Center.<lb />
Based out of Charlottesville, VA,<lb />
Mulvaney is currently on tour support-<lb />
ing his new album Everyone Is Blue. He<lb />
is a seasoned performer who has opened<lb />
for musicians such as B.B. King and The<lb />
Chicago Blues Allstars. Mulvaney's style<lb />
of music is what he describes as "pro-<lb />
gressive acoustic rhythm and blues<lb />
This will be Mulvaney's first time<lb />
on our campus. But he's no tenderfoot<lb />
to live performance. He has been a pro-<lb />
fessional musician for 25 years and trav-<lb />
els up and down the eastern seaboard in<lb />
support of his music.<lb />
Unlike many of Mulvaney's home-<lb />
town counterparts, his sole source of<lb />
income is his music.<lb />
In today's MTV society, checking out<lb />
a true music veteran is a refreshing<lb />
change. Mulvaney's show starts at 1:30<lb />
p.m. tomorrow at Mendenhall and is<lb />
scheduled to last about 90 minutes. The<lb />
show is free to everyone and promises<lb />
to be one of the Noon Day Tunes favor-<lb />

So WZMB has gone main-<lb />

Anyone who read "A Drop in<lb />

Fall knows how much I pissed and<lb />
moaned about this possibility. I<lb />
wrote long dissertations on how<lb />
college radio shapes the future of<lb />
music. On how the Nirvanas of<lb />
tomorrow will never happen with-<lb />
out college radio to give them ex-<lb />
posure. On how college radio,<lb />
along with NPR, is the last radio<lb />
format not controlled by record<lb />
companies out to promote their<lb />
latest overnight discovery.<lb />
And I could bitch more now.<lb />
I've really been listening to WZMB<lb />
this past week, and really giving<lb />
the new mainstream format a<lb />
chance. And if I wanted to I could<lb />
point out that, despite the<lb />
station's intentions to mix main-<lb />
stream music with "more obscure"<lb />
stuff, I've heard little else but<lb />
Hole, Green Day and Dave<lb />
Matthews.<lb />
I could talk about how much<lb />
this bored me, and how I finally<lb />
gave up in frustration last Friday<lb />
and dove deliriously back into my<lb />
CD collection. I could mention<lb />
that it's just occurred to me that<lb />
I've listened to most of the stuff<lb />
in my personal music collection<lb />
fewer times than I've heard 90<lb />
of the stuff being played on<lb />
WZMB, and that I listen to my<lb />
stuff constantly.<lb />
I could make the point that<lb />
while most of ZMB's playlist isn't<lb />
necessarily bad, I've heard it all ten<lb />
million times before in other places<lb />
and would really like something<lb />
different<lb />
But to Hell with all that I'm<lb />
sick of fighting. I'm sick of shout-<lb />
ing my throat hoarse and beating<lb />
my typing fingers down to bloody,<lb />
bone-exposed nubs. I'm sick of be-<lb />
ing a voice in the wilderness, of<lb />
pointing out that the emperor's<lb />
buck naked and a big old bee is<lb />
about to plants its stinger right in<lb />
his bloated imperial buttocks.<lb />
I'm sick of speaking up for the<lb />
sizable contingent of underground<lb />
music fans in Greenville who prob-<lb />
ably aren't complaining about the<lb />
format change because they<lb />
stopped listening the minute the<lb />
station turned into "Alternative<lb />
Nation<lb />
So to Hell with it all. I'm join-<lb />
ing the mainstream bandwagon!<lb />
I'm tossing out all my obscure discs<lb />
in favor of that hip stuff everybody<lb />
else is playing!<lb />
Out, Man or Astroman! I'll<lb />
hear no more cool surf-guitar<lb />
riffing from you!<lb />
Away, New York Ska-Jazz En-<lb />
semble! I don't need your ear-<lb />
friendly, toe-tapping sound and<lb />
stunning musical ability anymore!<lb />
Get thee hence, Sonic Youth!<lb />
Though you headlined<lb />
Lollapalooza and proved your-<lb />
selves to be the best band on the<lb />
planet your sound makes my new<lb />
mainstream friends look bad and<lb />
gives them headaches!<lb />
And why stop there? Why<lb />
don't I throw out that first Hole al-<lb />
bum, too? So what if it's a searing<lb />
exploration of coming of age for the<lb />
modern American woman that was<lb />
produced by Sonic Youth's Kim<lb />
Gordon? Nobody listens to it!<lb />
And while I'm at it I'd better<lb />
lose that first really pretty decent<lb />
Green Day disc too. What's that'<lb />
Yeah, they've got more than one<lb />
album. So do the Offspring for that<lb />
matter. And Nirvana recorded some-<lb />
thing called "Bleach" once, too. But<lb />
I don't guess anybody cares. Out it<lb />
goes.<lb />
Wow! My CD collection looks<lb />
so much better! All those strange<lb />
and different independent labels are<lb />
gone! Now everything can be care-<lb />
fully grouped by major record com-<lb />
pany logo! Sony here, Warner<lb />
Brothers here, the Big Freaking<lb />
Record Conglomerate of North<lb />
America over there<lb />
What? Sarcasm? Me? I'm hurt<lb />

ECU entered Neyland Stadium<lb />
Saturday night to play in front of 95,416<lb />
screaming fans, the largest crowd that<lb />
Pirate football has ever faced.<lb />
Yet despite the fact that this was<lb />
the home opener for the University of<lb />
Tennessee, one of the strongest fan-<lb />
backed programs in the history of col-<lb />
lege football, it wasn't the intimidation<lb />
factor that helped the Volunteers cruise<lb />
to a 27-7 win in Knoxville. True, Ten-<lb />
nessee loves its football, and the longer<lb />
the off season, the hungrier they get to<lb />
don the orange and white and sing<lb />
"Rocky-Top" with 95,000 of their clos-<lb />
est friends.<lb />
But ask coach Logan why his team<lb />
fell to UT head coach Phillip Fulmer<lb />
and his No. 8-ranked Vols, and the an-<lb />
swer you will get is poor execution at<lb />
critical moments.<lb />
"We didn't convert on our oppor-<lb />
tunities, and they did Logan said af-<lb />
ter the game. "That is to their credit,<lb />
and that was the difference<lb />
The Pirates received the opening<lb />
kick-off and surprisingly ran their of-<lb />
fense with ease. Junior quarterback<lb />
Marcus Crandell (20-35, 185 yards)<lb />
showed composure on his first drive of<lb />
his 1995 season, highlighted by a 22-<lb />
yard pass to sophomore splitend Larry<lb />
Shannon.<lb />
The drive ended shortly thereafter,<lb />
as ECU sophomore punter Matt Levine<lb />
entered the game for one of only two<lb />
punts for him in the game (35.5 avg.).<lb />
There was a total of four punts between<lb />
both teams in the ballgame.<lb />
For UT's first drive, the Knoxville<lb />
faithful were anxiously awaiting the<lb />
performance of their super-boy sopho-<lb />
more quarterback, Peyton Manning (17-<lb />
29,178 yards).<lb />
Manning started his drive on his<lb />
own 13-yard line, and used a conserva-<lb />
tive air-attack and the gains of junior<lb />
tailback Jay Graham (26 att for 146<lb />
yards) to travel to ECU's 2-yard line.<lb />
On fourth and one from the two,<lb />
Fulmer sent UT place-kicker Jeff Hall<lb />
onto the field with the woeful boos of<lb />
the Volunteer crowd culminating soon<lb />
after. Fulmer called a time-out and sent<lb />
Manning back into the game to the<lb />
crowd's appreciation. Two plays later,<lb />
Manning crossed the end zone on a yard<lb />
keeper to put the Vols up 7-0 with 2:57<lb />
left to play in the first quarter.<lb />
ECU's second drive began on a<lb />
sour note as special teams freshman<lb />
Scott Harley was called on a late block<lb />
on the kick-off. The penalty pushed the<lb />
Pirates back to their own 12-yard line,<lb />
where Crandell started a drive that<lb />
would take ECU to a fourth down and<lb />

In the last decade, sports talk ra-<lb />

With the possible exception of baseball,<lb />
interest in major sports are at an all-<lb />
time high.<lb />
According to ESPN, over 150 ra-<lb />
dio stations today are dedicated solely<lb />
to sports talk, up from just four in 1990.<lb />
Additionally, over 1,200 radio stations<lb />
have sports talk programs in their line-<lb />
up. Here at ECU, WZMB 91.3 is no ex-<lb />
ception.<lb />
Sports Director Brian Paiz heads<lb />
up Pirate Talk, a one-hour talk show<lb />
devoted to Pirate athletics. With the<lb />
help of on-air talents Brad Oldham and<lb />
Aaron Wilson, Paiz takes listeners<lb />
through 60 minutes of opinion, fact,<lb />
quotes and quips on ECU athletics.<lb />
"I feel Pirate Talk can become an<lb />
outstanding medium to discuss all<lb />
sports at ECU, not just football said<lb />
Wilson. "It offers something for the die-<lb />
hard Pirate fan and the casual listener<lb />
who enjoys the talk show format Work-<lb />
ing with experienced guys like Brian and<lb />
Brad have made it easier for me to fit<lb />
into the show<lb />
Pirate Talk airs on Thursdays at 7<lb />
p.m. and welcomes listener call-ins. Be-<lb />
cause of its ability to land respected<lb />
sports authorities from across the na-<lb />
tion, as well as provide up-close and<lb />
personal interviews with ECU athletes,<lb />
Pirate Talk is the area's best source for<lb />
late-breaking news as well as for two-<lb />
way communication between fans and<lb />
athletes.<lb />
"Pirate Talk moved to Thursday for<lb />
exposure said Paiz, "so we could com-<lb />

want to make the show as professional<lb />
as I can. I would also like to have a guest<lb />
from another Division I program every<lb />
week<lb />
If you didn't tune in on Thursday,<lb />
here's what you missed:<lb />
University of Tennessee Athletic<lb />
Director Bud Ford said in his live tele-<lb />
phone interview that ECU was being<lb />
taken seriously by UT players and fans<lb />
alike. "1 think East Carolina is an out-<lb />
standing team said Ford. "I don't think<lb />
anybody has any doubts about their<lb />
capabilities. ECU is a team that we're<lb />
well aware of, they've had success in<lb />
the past and they have a fine young<lb />
coach who is capable of making them<lb />
play hard.<lb />
"We have several players from the<lb />
North Carolina area and I'm sure they're<lb />
telling our team 'you better be ready to<lb />
play when you play East Carolina<lb />
ECU football Head Coach Steve<lb />
Logan had high praise for UT sopho-<lb />
more quarterbach Peyton Manning.<lb />
"The young man's going to have a<lb />
chance to play pro ball said Logan.<lb />
"Right now he's physically underdevel-<lb />
oped. Last season he was thrown to the<lb />
wolves and wasn't ready, but he did a<lb />
beautiful job. He was surrounded by<lb />
enough talent that they could get away<lb />
with it"<lb />
Logan also let listeners in on the<lb />
role that his freshmen would play. "I<lb />
plan on playing a lot of football play-<lb />
ers in this game he said. "We've got<lb />
a lot of kids who've never played in a<lb />
Division I game and I'm going to throw<lb />
them out there and they're going to<lb />
play and I've told them that from the<lb />
moment they hit campus<lb />

and bounced off linebackers for extra<lb />
yards.<lb />
4pa "Our offensive line excecuted per-<lb />
fectly against a quality defensive line<lb />
Steve Logan said. "Jerris McPhail did not<lb />
surprise me at alL 1 would have liked to<lb />
see him carry it 30 times so he could break<lb />
a long run. He gets better as the game<lb />
goes on. In the fourth quarter, the UT<lb />
secondary was getting a little tired of tack-<lb />
ling him.<lb />
"He does the hitting. He is just a<lb />
superbly conditioned athlete at 212<lb />
pounds. I predicted before the season that<lb />
he would get 1,000 yards this year and he<lb />
is right on track after this game<lb />
Particularly effective for the ECU<lb />
offense was the zone dive play, in which<lb />
McPhail ran right up the middle of the<lb />
-s mmmmmmmm<lb />
UT defense. This power-oriented running<lb />
play may be even more effective Saturday<lb />
versus an undersized, quick Orangemen<lb />
defense whose biggest player in their front<lb />
seven weighs 250 pounds.<lb />
"We will try to attack Syracuse's<lb />
defense with that play senior center<lb />
Kevin Wiggins said. "That should slow<lb />
them down, along with us cutting a lot<lb />
and using our quick (short passing) game<lb />

With Saturday's loss to the Uni-<lb />
versity of Tennessee, the Pirate's<lb />
record against one of the nation's<lb />
powerhouse conferences, the SEC, fell<lb />
to 3-17.<lb />
The positive outlook that ECU<lb />
Athletic Director Mike Hamrick takes<lb />
on the UT loss however, is that for<lb />
two straight seasons the Pirates have<lb />
shown that they can hold their own<lb />
with teams such as nationally ranked<lb />
Auburn and Tennessee, as well as<lb />
upsets like South Carolina last sea-<lb />
son in Columbia on their homecom-<lb />
ing game.<lb />
To Hamrick, ECU put up a wor-<lb />
thy fight against the Vols.<lb />
"We ran well. We passed the ball<lb />
well. We played good defense. This to<lb />
me is not a discouraging loss<lb />
Hamrick said after the game.<lb />
"You hate to lose. I mean, I hate<lb />
to lose more than anybody, but there<lb />
was some good signs tonight and<lb />
we're looking forward to the rest of<lb />
the season<lb />
When comparing schools such as<lb />
East Carolina and Tennessee, the po-<lb />
sition of head coach is a good place<lb />
to start<lb />
There are some similarities be-<lb />
tween ECU Head Coach Steve Logan<lb />
and Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer. Both<lb />
men took over the helm of already<lb />
successful football programs from big-<lb />
name coaches in 1992.<lb />
Fulmer of course, had the assign-<lb />
ment of replacing the legendary UT<lb />
coach, Johnny Majors, who headed<lb />
Volunteer football from 1977 to 1992,<lb />
winning three SEC championships<lb />
along the way, in '85, '89 and '90. Like<lb />
Logan, Fulmer went from offensive<lb />
coordinator to head coach.<lb />
Logan replaced 1991 Peach Bowl<lb />
Championship<lb />
coach Bill Lewis, <lb />
who resigned<lb />
soon after the vic-<lb />
tory in order to<lb />
replace Bobby<lb />
Ross at Georgia<lb />
Tech.<lb />
Both<lb />
coaches used<lb />
their experiences<lb />
as offensive coor-<lb />
dinators to em-<lb />
bark on bold of-<lb />
fensive attacks in <lb />
their first seasons.<lb />
And both coaches can talk your<lb />
ear off about the devastating circum-<lb />
stances that correlate from quarter-<lb />
back injuries to a team's success.<lb />
After starting 1-3 through four<lb />
games last season, Fulmer battled two<lb />
harsh quarterback injuries before set-<lb />
tling in with freshman Peyton Man-<lb />
ning.<lb />
And Coach Logan is still wonder-<lb />
ing "what if?" after a season-ending<lb />
leg injury in just the second game of<lb />
the 1993 season that plagued rookie<lb />
redshirt freshman Marcus Crandell.<lb />
Crandell, now a junior, is still matur-<lb />
ing and developing every game as a<lb />
Pirate, despite sitting out that season<lb />
with questions arising on whether or<lb />
not he would ever play again.<lb />
"Until we win<lb />
these big games,<lb />
we are not going<lb />
to garner any of<lb />
the respect that we<lb />
are striving for<lb />
 Coach Logan<lb />
Through four seasons of coach-<lb />
ing, the two coaches' winning percent-<lb />
ages are the stark contrast Coming<lb />
into this season, Fulmer had amassed<lb />
a career record at UT of 21-6-1, a win-<lb />
ning percentage of .76. Logan's record<lb />
coming into this season is 14-20-0,<lb />
with a winning<lb />
percentage of .41.<lb />
The ultimate<lb />
ground that<lb />
stands firm be-<lb />
tween these two<lb />
men is the quest<lb />
to take their foot-<lb />
ball programs to<lb />
the next level. Ob-<lb />
viously for<lb />
Fulmer, being<lb />
ranked eighth in<lb />
the pre-season<lb />
gives him loftier<lb />
goals, while Logan is focused more<lb />
on revenge on Illinois and winning Ihe<lb />
Liberty Bowl. Thus, both teams can<lb />
learn very much from one another<lb />
because of a desire to compete and<lb />
bring success to their academic insti-<lb />
tutions through football.<lb />
"Until we win these big games,<lb />
we are not going to gamer any of the<lb />
respect that we are striving for<lb />
Logan said. "Therein lies the seed of<lb />
what we fight against and what we<lb />
fight for, and until we win, it doesn't<lb />
matter. Rome wasn't built in a day,<lb />
and I'm sure there will be people wail-<lb />
ing and mashing their teeth over this<lb />
loss. It's my job to not let myself get<lb />
too low. It's also my job to make sure<lb />
I don't get too high after a victory,<lb />
and I think I do a good job of that"<lb />
Lady pirates look for respect<lb />
Women's soccer<lb />

season opener<lb />
Eric Bartels<lb />
Senior Writer<lb />
Beginning a new season is al-<lb />
ways tough, but for the Lady Pi-<lb />
rates soccer team, wins are just not<lb />
that easy.<lb />
Saturday afternoon was no pic-<lb />
nic for ECU as they hosted the Lady<lb />
Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne. Going into<lb />
the game, the Lady Pirates had ev-<lb />
erything to gain including respect<lb />
- respect that they didn't have a<lb />
year ago with a 2-15 record.<lb />
However, the Lady Bears<lb />
scored early to the dismay of the<lb />
Lady Pirate defense. Not even two<lb />
minutes into the game, Natalie<lb />
Daniel sent Patti Muzik a pass into<lb />
the middle of the ECU defense for<lb />
the early 1-0 lead.<lb />
At the 16:28 mark, Lenoir-<lb />
Rhyne scored again, this time an<lb />
unassisted shot from Daniel.<lb />
"We were disorganized in the<lb />
midfield early in the game coach<lb />
Roberts said. "They were very op-<lb />
portunistic - we had chances but<lb />
were unable to finish them<lb />
Fortunately, the Lady Pirates<lb />
got on the board, closing the gap<lb />
to 2-1 just before the intermission.<lb />
Junior Mandy Gaster sailed a rocket<lb />
into the upper corner of the Lady<lb />
Bears net at the 30:13 mark.<lb />
With a new goalkeeper in the<lb />
second half for ECU, Coach Rob-<lb />
erts intended<lb />
to give the<lb />
Lady Pirates<lb />
new hope.<lb />
However,<lb />
Tara Healy<lb />
would all but<lb />
slam the door<lb />
shut on<lb />
ECU'S<lb />
chances.<lb />
Trailing<lb />
2-1, Healy re-<lb />
ceived a Tara<lb />
Cristian pass<lb />
that would<lb />
eventually<lb />
slip through<lb />
the fingers of<lb />
goalie Jenni-<lb />
fer Venters.<lb />
Finally, at the<lb />
72:53 mark, Healy received a<lb />
Natalie Daniel pass to close out the<lb />
scoring, 4-1.<lb />
On a brighter note, earlier last<lb />
week (Aug. 31), ECU hosted Barton<lb />
College in a victorious scrimmage,<lb />
5-0.<lb />
Freshman Stephanie Capozzoli<lb />
from Charlotte, led all scorers with<lb />
two goals in the first half to devas-<lb />
tate the Bulldogs.<lb />
"It's a different atmosphere<lb />
than in high school - it's definitely<lb />
more competitive Capozzoli said.<lb />
"Coach Roberts has helped me<lb />
make the transition to collegiate<lb />
soccer he's pushed me to do<lb />
better<lb />
Junior forward Mandy Gaster<lb />
would add one goal to the scoring<lb />
barrage, as well as two other pre-<lb />
mier freshmen. Iten Magliocchetti,<lb />
from Fairfax Station, Va and<lb />
Kristen Thor, a Pittsford, N.Y. na-<lb />
tive, wrapped up the scoring for the<lb />
Lady Pirates in the second half.<lb />
"It feels good - it was a good<lb />
icebreaker Magliocchetti said, af-<lb />
ter making her first collegiate ap-<lb />
pearance as the Lady Pirates'<lb />
sweeper. "Since I played the same<lb />
position in high school, it was easy<lb />
to fit in to the lineup<lb />
After settling into the friendly<lb />
confines of the East Carolina Soc-<lb />
cer Complex, the ladies will have<lb />
much to look forward to the rest<lb />
of the season. In fact, Wednesday<lb />
Sept. 6, the Lady Pirates will host<lb />
Methodist College at 4 p.m. Later<lb />
on in the week, ECU will kick off<lb />
its conference schedule as the Pa-<lb />

he said. "You could tell it was his first<lb />

The Pirates are planning on running<lb />
15 minutes of first offense against first<lb />
defense, using Syracuse's option offense<lb />
during practice this week.<lb />
The game on Saturday will be the<lb />
seventh meeting overall, between the<lb />
Orangemen and the Pirates, with Syra-<lb />
cuse holding an all-time series lead. This<lb />
will be the first time ECU has traveled to<lb />
the Carrier Dome, since 1991 when Jeff<lb />
Blake and crew upset the Orangemen<lb />
23-20. WNCT-9 in Greenville will carry<lb />
the game live starting at noon on Satur-<lb />
day.<lb />
The Liberty Bowl Coalition teams<lb />
were all in action last weekend as South-<lb />
em Mississippi came away as the lone<lb />
team with a victory. The Golden Eagles<lb />
defeated Northern Illinois 3S13.<lb />
The Memphis Tigers came up short<lb />
against Mississippi St 28-18 in Starkville,<lb />
Mississippi on Saturday. The Bulldogs<lb />
built a 21-0 lead, but Memphis rallied<lb />
back for new coach Rip Scherer to cut<lb />
the lead to 28-18, but the Tigers could<lb />
not get any closer, and the Bulldogs held<lb />
on for the win.<lb />
Maryland used their run and shoot<lb />
offense to post a 29-10 victory over<lb />
Tulane. The Green Wave rushed for only<lb />
39 yards and were held to just one touch-<lb />
down on the night<lb />

When East Carolina travels to Syra-<lb />
cuse on Saturday to face the Orangemen,<lb />
they will be battling yet another team<lb />
that has earned a birth as one of the<lb />
nation's top 25 teams.<lb />
The Orangemen helped gain a spot<lb />
in the Top 25 by defeating nationally<lb />
ranked North Carolina 20-9 in Chapel<lb />
Hill on Saturday. Who would play quar-<lb />
terback for Syracuse was answered when<lb />
red-shirt freshman Donovan McNabb got<lb />
the starting nod.<lb />
McNabb was 10-16 for 120 yards,<lb />
causing havoc all night for the Tar Heel<lb />
defense as Syracuse continued to run<lb />
the option against UNC. Malcolm Tho-<lb />
mas and Tebucky Jones rushed for touch-<lb />
downs for Syracuse, as they moved into<lb />
the 20th spot in the CNNUSA Today<lb />
Poll and 22nd in the AP Poll. Syracuse<lb />
wide receiver Marvin Harrison also con-<lb />
tributed as he had five catches for 67<lb />
yards.<lb />
ECU head coach Steve Logan was<lb />
impressed with the Orangemen.<lb />
"Syracuse went to Chapel Hill and<lb />
got off that bus and wasn't sure if they<lb />
could beat UNC, but as the game went<lb />
on they reached down deep, played hard.<lb />

With 13:41 left in the second quar-<lb />

his offense.<lb />
Manning returned on his second<lb />

his first On fourth and six on the ECU<lb />
19-yard line, Hall converted a 36-yard field<lb />
goal to give the Vols a 10-0 lead.<lb />
There's always one play that fans<lb />
and media like to pin on a team's loss.<lb />
The very next play from scrimmage for<lb />
the Pirate offense could have very well<lb />
been that play.<lb />
On first and 10 from their 20-yard<lb />
line, Crandell flipped the ball back to<lb />
freshman running back Daryl Jones, who<lb />
attempted to hurl a bomb to flanker Ja-<lb />
son Nichols. The pass was picked off by<lb />
left comerback Deron Jenkins for UT,<lb />
who returned the ball 22 yards to ECU's<lb />
31-yard line. Two plays later, Manning<lb />
hit a wide-open Nilo Silvan in the end<lb />
zone to boost UT's lead to 17-0.<lb />

Crandell said. "We hurt ourselves<lb />
