Seven members of the Alpha<lb />
Phi Alpha fraternity were suspended<lb />
from school in December by the Of-<lb />
fice of the Dean of Students for in-<lb />
volvement in an activity in which<lb />
ECU student Brennon Bohol was in-<lb />
jured. Five men were suspended for<lb />
a semester and two men were sus-<lb />
pended for a year.<lb />
On Oct. 26, Bohol was injured<lb />
when all nine members of the pledge<lb />
class were bound, causing bruises<lb />
to his ribs.<lb />
Although neither the ECU or<lb />
Greenville police became involved<lb />
and no one was arrested, the ECU<lb />
administration became involved be-<lb />
cause "students accused of hazing<lb />
will appear before the Student<lb />
Honor Board said Dean of Stu-<lb />
dents Ronald Speier.<lb />
However, the process did not<lb />
get that far.<lb />
"There were over 500 cases<lb />
requiring judicial attention for vari-<lb />
ous campus violations in total last<lb />
semester and the system allows for<lb />
some to settle through other com-<lb />
mittees, which is what happened in<lb />
our case said Rodney White, Al-<lb />
pha Phi Alpha area director and<lb />
adviser. "All men involved were held<lb />
accountable<lb />
Although<lb />
most men in the<lb />
fraternity will<lb />
not speak about<lb />
the incident, in-<lb />

Carter (who said<lb />
he "instructed<lb />
the members of<lb />
my fraternity<lb />
not to speak<lb />
about whatever mamm-<lb />
happened"). two<lb />
men spoke publicly last December<lb />
with Shanai Harris of WITN and<lb />
then, along with a few other Alpha<lb />
members, to The East Carolinian.<lb />
Alpha Phi Alpha member<lb />
Leondus Farrow said Bohol claimed<lb />
"his ribs were bruised and that his<lb />
doctor ordered him to stay in bed a<lb />
"All I know is<lb />
that I was a<lb />
pledge and<lb />
few weeks, but within two days he<lb />
was at the football (Homecoming)<lb />
game and a step show<lb />
"The young man who got in-<lb />
jured said that his parents wanted<lb />
him to press criminal charges<lb />
against us. but he didn't because he<lb />
said he told them it was an acci-<lb />
dent Farrow said. "The point is, we<lb />
didn't bruise his ribs. Nobody beat<lb />
him or bruised<lb />
him. We don't<lb />
know how he<lb />
got his ribs<lb />
bruised, we<lb />
think the<lb />
pledges fell on<lb />
him.<lb />
When<lb />
asked why<lb />
seven students<lb />
were sus-<lb />
pended despite<lb />
the fact that<lb />
the incident is<lb />
being termed an accident. White<lb />
said: "There were different levels<lb />
and circumstances involved White<lb />

Board delays<lb />
vote on clause<lb />
Board of<lb />
Governors<lb />
continues to<lb />
postpone vote on<lb />
sexual orientation<lb />
Ben Duran<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The UNC system's board of gov-<lb />
ernors (BOG) continue to delay voting<lb />
on an amendment to their code which<lb />
would protect gays and lesbians from<lb />
discrimination throughout the 16 state-<lb />
supported campuses.<lb />
The BOC planned to vote on the<lb />
measure in November, but the vote was<lb />
cancelled without explanation. The<lb />
amendment has not been brought to a<lb />
vote in the two subsequent meetings<lb />
of the BOG and has not been re-sched-<lb />
uled.<lb />
The proposed amendment which<lb />
was passed by the BOG's Non-Discrimi-<lb />
nation Committee in October, also ex-<lb />
tends protection from discrimination<lb />
based on age and or handicaps, as well<lb />
as sexual orientation.<lb />
The amendment has come un-<lb />
der fire from former Governor Jim Mar-<lb />
tin, said A Keith Dyer, president of the<lb />
Association of Student Governments<lb />
and a member of the board of gover-<lb />
nors. Dyer, an ECU undergraduate, is<lb />
the only student who serves on the<lb />
BOG. In a Jan. 12 article of UNC's Daily<lb />
Tar Heel Martin said he was seeking<lb />
clarification of the term sexual orien-<lb />
tation Martin did not return TEC's<lb />
phone calls.<lb />
"Any allusions to bestiality or<lb />
necrophilia really dodge what this leg-<lb />
islation is about" Dyer said. "This<lb />
amendment to the code sends the right<lb />
message - no one should be discrimi-<lb />
nated against because of their sexual<lb />
preference, there does not seem to be<lb />
any argument for the opposition to<lb />
stand on<lb />
ECU is one of 11 schools within<lb />
the UNC system which already has a<lb />
non-discrimination policy which in-<lb />
cludes coverage regarding sexual ori-<lb />
entation.<lb />
"We've had a non-discrimination<lb />
policy since I got here in '81. Last spring<lb />
we revised our policy to include sexual<lb />
orientation said ECU's equal employ-<lb />
ment officer. Dr. Mary Anne Rose.<lb />
While the measure has come<lb />
under fire from the former governor,<lb />
some BOG members are optimistic<lb />
about the amendment's chances.<lb />

For students and others inter-<lb />
ested in learning more about North<lb />
Carolina, the North Carolina Literary<lb />
Review (NCLR) provides readers with<lb />
insight into the literature, history and<lb />
culture of North Carolina.<lb />
"What we are trying to do is look<lb />
at historical and contemporary culture<lb />
and literature in a broad context pre-<lb />
sented in a way that serious readers,<lb />
and not necessarily academic special-<lb />
ists, will enjoy reading and learning<lb />
about the regions and culture (of North<lb />
Carolina) said Alex Albright, editor<lb />
of NCLR.<lb />
NCLR was begun by Dr. Keats<lb />
Sparrow, dean of the College of Arts<lb />
and Sciences in 1992. The magazine<lb />
comes out about every 10 months with<lb />
the next issue scheduled to come out<lb />
in March. It is put out by the ECU<lb />
English department and the North<lb />
Carolina Literary and Historical Asso-<lb />
ciation. The magazine recently received<lb />
praise from the Council for Editors of<lb />
Learned Journals. NCLR was awarded<lb />
the Best New Journal Award.<lb />
"That was a real nice award<lb />
Albright said. "It was good for the uni-<lb />
versity and the department. It speaks<lb />
well, I think, of what we have been try-<lb />
ing to do<lb />
Albright said NCLR does not<lb />
normally accept unsolicited material<lb />
from writers.<lb />
"We are not really looking for<lb />
open submissions, we publish thematic<lb />
sections Albright said. "We are inter-<lb />
ested in proposals or queries from any-<lb />
body, but our staff is too small to<lb />
handle a lot of unsolicited manuscripts.<lb />
"We have published graduate,<lb />
undergraduate students from here<lb />
(ECU) as well as professional writers<lb />
from all over the world<lb />
Albright feels the NCLR helps<lb />
to promote the eastern part of North<lb />
Carolina by informing readers about<lb />
its past and present.<lb />
"I like a magazine that is read<lb />
and appreciated and helps people real-<lb />
ize particularly how important the east-<lb />
ern part of the state is to the rest of<lb />
the state and region Albright said.<lb />
Albright said the design of the<lb />
magazine makes it different from schol-<lb />
arly journals.<lb />
"I think the way we are able to<lb />
bring design, the way we mix design<lb />
with content, that makes it a real<lb />
unique publication, much more like a<lb />
magazine than a journal, primarily<lb />
because of excellent design by the<lb />
School of Art, which has won 14 de-<lb />
sign awards<lb />
Albright also credited success of<lb />
the magazine to associate editors John<lb />
Patterson and Bertie Fearing along<lb />
with student interns and graduate as-<lb />
sistants.<lb />

Earthquake casualties climb<lb />
(AP) - Powerful aftershocks rocked buildings and shattered glass in<lb />
Kobe Monday, and last week's deadly earthquake sent new shock waves<lb />
through Japan's political and financial establishment<lb />
The death toll from Tuesday's quake climbed k. 5.060, with 102<lb />
people still listed as missing, national police said. More than 26,284 people<lb />
were injured and 300,000 left homeless in Japan's deadliest quake in more<lb />
than 7u years.<lb />
Winter storms sweep through country<lb />
(AP) - A new Pacific storm snarled Southern California traffic Mon-<lb />
day with mudslides and water, and snow caused scattered school closings<lb />
yesterday across parts of the South.<lb />
Ohio had snowdrifts as high as eight feet after a stormy weekend.<lb />
A winter storm warning was in effect for Southern California through<lb />
Tuesday with up to eight inches of rain possible in the mountains, along<lb />
with two feet of snow above 2.000 feet, the National Weather Service<lb />
said.<lb />
A mudslide today blocked part of the Pacific Coast Highway in<lb />
Santa Monica, and on Sunday a rock slide killed two tourists on the<lb />
beach in La Jolla. Police today reported scores of stalled cars and spinouts.<lb />
In northern California, nearly three inches of rain fell in 24 hours<lb />
in the Sacramento Valley, and heavy snow was possible in the Sierra<lb />
Nevada.<lb />
In the Southeast, six counties in northern Georgia closed schools<lb />
this morning because of snow.<lb />

ing for a little more name recognition<lb />
as plans for the Cupola, a symbol of<lb />
East Carolina's past and future, swing<lb />
into high gear.<lb />
The Old Austin Cupola sat atop<lb />
the Herbert Austin building that, in<lb />
1908, was the first major academic fa-<lb />
cility on campus. The Cupola stood<lb />
24 feet above the apex of the Austin<lb />
building and, for years, was the high-<lb />
est point in Greenville.<lb />
"This particular cupola replaces<lb />
symbolically the cupola that was on<lb />
the old Austin building which was a<lb />
symbol of the university for years and<lb />
years said Richard Brown, Vice-Chan-<lb />
cellor of Business Affairs. "Its a re-<lb />
production of one and a half to two<lb />
times larger than the original<lb />
After tossing around the idea<lb />
of placing the Cupola by the new rec-<lb />
reation center and other sights, offi-<lb />
cials, including SGA President Ian<lb />
Eastman, decided on the Mall. "This<lb />
will be a place where a string quartet<lb />
could perform, a small band or place<lb />
to just gather and talk Brown said.<lb />
Six months from the start of<lb />
construction, the project is expected<lb />
to take six months to complete. The<lb />
Cupola will stand 30-35 feet tall and<lb />
will be visible from all buildings on<lb />
campus as well as Fifth Street provid-<lb />
ing the community and visitors an<lb />
instantly recognizable landmark.<lb />
Facilities Planners have also<lb />
taken steps to spoil the hopes of<lb />
would be vandals once the project is<lb />
complete.<lb />
"Lighting and material selec-<lb />
tion will be the focus in deterring<lb />
vandalism said Facilities Planner<lb />
Bruce Frye. The Cupola will have a<lb />
masonry exterior that will allow for<lb />
the removal of spray paint and will be<lb />
very well lit at all times.<lb />
ECU students that fear con-<lb />

be affected by this new structure can<lb />

ECU, of which the Alphas chose not<lb />
to be members. Instead, they are a<lb />
part of the National Panhellenic<lb />

fraternities and sororities.<lb />
As far as Batson is concerned,<lb />
"the community is suffering" from<lb />
the suspension of the members and<lb />
the fraternity as a whole. "Alphas<lb />
are very busy in the Greenville com-<lb />

said. "Our programs will be missed<lb />
One of the programs Batson<lb />
is referring to was the absence of<lb />
the 12th annual Martin Luther King<lb />

this, the Alphas have supported and<lb />
run the program, which used to be<lb />
considered the largest student-run<lb />
African-American program on cam-<lb />
pus.<lb />
Batson also stressed the univer-<lb />
sity will lose a lot of student leaders<lb />
with the suspension. "You need a 2.5<lb />
GPA to get into my fraternity, higher<lb />
than most other fraternities, and you<lb />
are based on you leadership , schol-<lb />
arship and service. The intake<lb />
progress is very rigorous<lb />
"And the community will miss<lb />
us because we feed the hungry and<lb />
clothe the naked. A lot of people are<lb />
going to be missing out Batson said.<lb />
Batson is not sure of his plans for the<lb />
future but one thing is certain to him,<lb />
"Alpha is is the heart, never to depart"<lb />
"I've washed my hands of Alpha<lb />
Phi Alpha but I'm not turning my back<lb />
on my fraternity Farrow said. "I<lb />
don't have any hard feelings against<lb />
Dean Speier because I recognize his<lb />
position but 1 don't think the suspen-<lb />

"I was only a semester away<lb />

White said. "Alpha does not believe<lb />

Our View<lb />
The recent<lb />
dissapearance<lb />
of a 19-inch<lb />
color<lb />
television<lb />
from<lb />
Williams<lb />
Arena lends<lb />
credibility to<lb />
the<lb />
suggestion<lb />
that ECU<lb />
students are,<lb />
and always<lb />
will be,<lb />
irresponsible<lb />
and<lb />
incorrigible<lb />
troublemakers.<lb />
It was too good to be true.<lb />
ECU spends $11.4 million to renovate Minges Coli-<lb />
seum, signals the change by renaming the joint, and<lb />
not three weeks goes by before someone breaks in and<lb />
rips something off.<lb />
One of the 27 brand-new Zenith 19-inch televisions<lb />
that encompasses the upper level of Williams arena was<lb />
stolen sometime after the James Madison dedication<lb />
game and before 9 a.m. on Jan. 16, the day of the Pi-<lb />
rates' next game.<lb />
This fact will indeed only lend credibility to the no-<lb />
tion, according to our friends in the Triangle (the Wolves,<lb />
Dookies and UNC Baby-Blues), that we East Carolin-<lb />
ians are criminally-minded troublemakers.<lb />
Maybe so, but we sure are crafty little devils.<lb />
Although our in-state rivals are adept at participat-<lb />
ing in celebratory park bench bonfires and interscho-<lb />
lastic downtown rumbles (all in good fun, of course),<lb />
one or more of our very own Greenvillites has found a<lb />
way to climb up and free a cable-ready gem from its<lb />
lofty perch above the Williams Arena lobby, escaping<lb />
unmolested to the nearest pawn shop or back to his or<lb />
her home.<lb />
Or maybe it was a collegiate Triangle spy working<lb />
undercover in purple and gold?<lb />
Nah. The safety and efficiency of this act obviously<lb />
borrowed from knowledge and skills learned by taking<lb />
good notes and.paying close attention in that hard-to-<lb />
find physicsengineeringHow To Be a Criminal block<lb />
course here at ECU. At least we can say that our school<lb />
prepares us for the real world.<lb />
It seems, looking back, that there could have been<lb />
some kind of a top-notch security system The Club<lb />
latched on the back of each TV set?) installed as part of<lb />
the renovation. At least they could have put serial num-<lb />
bers on them.<lb />
Seriously, what we are trying to say is that the re-<lb />
percussions of this rather, well, stupid act is topping<lb />
the list of any ECU information heading toward the Tri-<lb />
angle, and will only further damage our already-tainted<lb />
reputation in the area.<lb />
The opening of Williams Arena on Jan. 6 took ECU,<lb />
especially the basketball programs, to another level in<lb />
the collegiate world. However, we as a school need to<lb />
open our eyes and recognize that we will never be looked<lb />
at as scholastically and athletically on par with UNC,<lb />
N.C. State or Duke if we keep shooting ourselves in the<lb />
foot with actions such as this.<lb />
More sex education needed<lb />
Last week I watched a talk show<lb />
on teenage pregnancy. One of the<lb />
guests, Sherry, really shocked me. She<lb />
has given birth to a child every year<lb />
since she was 14 year? old. At the age<lb />
of 19 she was the mother of four kids<lb />
and was pregnant with another.<lb />
One out of every ten girls in the<lb />
United States today gives birth to a<lb />
baby before reaching the age of 18.<lb />
More than 500,000 of these teenag-<lb />
ers struggle just to finish high school.<lb />
Teen mothers without a high<lb />
I school education are twice as likely<lb />
to live in households receiving Aids<lb />
; to Families with Dependent Children<lb />
! (AFDC), compared to women with a<lb />
 high school education.<lb />
With little education and a large<lb />
demand for money, these young moth-<lb />
ers resort to the welfare system for<lb />
I economic support However, welfare<lb />
I is not a chosen means of support for<lb />
a few teenagers. If a job is offered they<lb />
 will accept<lb />
Having a baby out of wedlock<lb />
as a teenager is the surest road to<lb />
long-term welfare dependency. About<lb />
C 50 percent of all teenage mothers are<lb />
- on welfare within one year of the birth<lb />
- of their first child, and 77 percent are<lb />
J on welfare within five years, accord-<lb />
ing to the Congressional Budget of-<lb />
fice.<lb />
The public costs of these births,<lb />
including welfare, medical care and<lb />
Angela McCullers<lb />
Opinion Columnist<lb />
Half of all teen<lb />
moms on welfare<lb />
food stamps has been estimated at $30<lb />
billion in 1994. The cost may go up<lb />
this year.<lb />
Teenage mothers complete less<lb />
formal education than young girls<lb />
without children. On average, only 5<lb />
percent of teen mothers receive col-<lb />
lege degrees, compared to 47 percent<lb />
of those who have children at the age<lb />
of 25 or older.<lb />
One Center for Population<lb />
Research study found that at least 23<lb />
percent of teen mothers admitted to<lb />
intentionally becoming pregnant.<lb />
Most of these are unprepared for fie<lb />
experience of motherhood. A very few<lb />
number of teenagers have an adequate<lb />
idea of what it means to be a parent.<lb />
When 23 percent of these children<lb />
want children we have a serious cri-<lb />
sis facing our nation.<lb />
One-third of the daughters of<lb />
teenage mothers will go on to become<lb />
teen mothers themselves.<lb />
Many people think that sex edu-<lb />
cation in the school systems will solve<lb />
the dilemma of teenage pregnancy. I,<lb />
on the other hand, do not think so. I<lb />
believe that the schools cannot fight<lb />
this battle alone and win.<lb />
It is time for parents to step in<lb />
and take on their responsibilities.<lb />
There are some things that need to<lb />
be taught at home, not in the school<lb />
system. All parents should be respon-<lb />
sible for educating their children<lb />
about sex, values and morals. The best<lb />
education starts in the home.<lb />
Although most local school dis-<lb />
tricts are free to offer sex education,<lb />
a majority of students get no sex edu-<lb />
cation in their schools.<lb />
The high school that I gradu-<lb />
ated from (Smithfield-Selma High) did<lb />
not offer sex education classes at all.<lb />
We had wood design classes, home<lb />
economic classes and auto repair<lb />
classes, but not one single sex educa-<lb />
tion class.<lb />
Nonschool programs seem<lb />
more likely than school-based ones to<lb />
cover the more controversial topics<lb />
that are of most interest to teens, such<lb />
as contraception, sexual decision mak-<lb />
ing, values, feelings and premarital<lb />
sex.<lb />
Sex education is also offered<lb />
through religious organizations,<lb />
youth agencies, family planning clin-<lb />
ics, medical schools and other orga-<lb />
nizations.<lb />

Americans: Politically ignorant<lb />
The American political system<lb />
is broken. People are angry with their<lb />

The answer is deeper than many<lb />
of the answer pundits give us. They<lb />

Kinsley tells us voters in favor of term<lb />
limits are saying, "Stop me before I<lb />
vote again<lb />
Kinsley may have struck a glanc-<lb />
ing blow at the root cause of our po-<lb />
litical problems: the voters. We can-<lb />
not expect elected officials to answer<lb />
to an ill- informed and apathetic elec-<lb />
torate.<lb />
Nearly half of the adults in a<lb />
1994 poll did not even know the name<lb />
of their U.S. representative. Sixty-<lb />
seven percent of voters polled in a<lb />
1992 survey said television advertis-<lb />
ing was their primary source of infor-<lb />
mation on who to vote for. These<lb />
must be the same people who<lb />
Thomas W. Blue<lb />
Opinion Columnist<lb />
Who is your<lb />
representative?<lb />
wouldn't know what was funny if it<lb />
weren't for laugh tracks on network<lb />
television.<lb />
We live in a democratic society<lb />
where only half of the population<lb />
votes. Elected officials will not be<lb />
responsive unless we demand that<lb />
they be held accountable.<lb />
The Student Government Asso-<lb />
ciation (SGA) is a classic example of<lb />
this problem. Many students say the<lb />
SGA is not responsive to our needs,<lb />
yet anyone can join the organization<lb />
and try to change things. There are<lb />
even vacant positions because no one<lb />
cares enough to apply. This student<lb />
legislature spends over $150,000 of our<lb />
student fees.<lb />
It is unreasonable to expect SGA<lb />
to look out for our needs - if we are<lb />
unwilling to do it ourselves.<lb />
The same point can be illustrated<lb />
in local politics. Students often com-<lb />
plain about the Greenville City Coun-<lb />
cil. They say ordinances like the one<lb />
prohibiting more than three unrelated<lb />
adults from living in the same dwell-<lb />
ing are unfair.<lb />
However, there was not a crowd<lb />
of students to represent that view when<lb />
the Greenville board of adjustment dis-<lb />
cussed the enforcement of the ordi-<lb />
nance on January 19. Why should city<lb />
government respond to students' needs<lb />
if we don't bother to voice our con-<lb />
cerns? We cannot expect our politi-<lb />
cians, locally or nationally, to respond<lb />
to us unless we demand that they do.<lb />
The ordinance outlawing more<lb />
than three unrelated adults from liv-<lb />
ing in the same house may be enforced<lb />
in the near future. The legislature may<lb />
cut funding for higher education in<lb />
North Carolina. Congress may not deal<lb />
with many of the problems we want it<lb />
to.<lb />
However, people should not com-<lb />
plain about these or any other prob-<lb />
lems unless they are willing to get in-<lb />
volved or at least informed about gov-<lb />
ernment Changing our political sys-<lb />
tem is an individual responsibility. We<lb />
just can't afford to leave it up to the<lb />
politicians.<lb />

Letters to the Editor<lb />
To the Editor:<lb />
This reply concerns Patrick<lb />
Davis' letter in the Jan. 10th edition.<lb />
I thank you for commenting, but I<lb />
will stand behind my statement. Yes.<lb />
I did comment "Hey Jesse Helms,<lb />
you work for Bill Clinton and in<lb />
the literal sense, that is incorrect, but<lb />
there are many aspects of authority<lb />
a President enjoys over a Senator.<lb />
Don't insult my intelligence, Mr.<lb />
Davis.<lb />
The executive and legislative<lb />
branches are a "team" of sorts, work-<lb />
ing together to reform the country.<lb />
Senator Jesse Helms is definitely a<lb />
member of this unit, and I would con-<lb />
tend in this regard he works for the<lb />
Chief Executive Officer. The Presi-<lb />
dent spearheads the movement to<lb />
improve the country. His role is pri-<lb />
mary in the public eye, and with his<lb />
executive privileges (and his power<lb />
to veto legislation) he has leverage<lb />
over members of Congress. How<lb />
picky can we get, Mr. Davis? No, look-<lb />
ing at it technically, Sen. Jesse Helms<lb />
doesn't work for Clinton, but come<lb />
on Mr. Davis. I could write a weak<lb />
letter insulting someone else's aca-<lb />
demic integrity were they to make a<lb />
minor snafu such as this, but what<lb />
would the point be? Believe me. I<lb />
don't need any "basic lessons" other<lb />
than but what is offered by our fine<lb />
faculty. Perhaps I rushed through the<lb />
letter in my anger over Mr. Helms'<lb />
idiotic remark. What I need to leam<lb />
is how to deal with nit picky people<lb />
who can't understand creative writ-<lb />
ing. It is Helms, not I, who has a<lb />
"long way to go<lb />

This quote, attributed to Red<lb />

ears when I discovered it in the press<lb />

The problem is, it seems to be a sen-<lb />

Not so with Red Grammer. He<lb />

"A Drop in the Bucket" is<lb />
just what it claims to be: a very<lb />
tiny drop in the great screaming<lb />
bucket of American media opin-<lb />
ion. Take it as you will.<lb />
Ah, January! A chill is in the<lb />
air, North Carolina begins to hold<lb />
its breath for the slightest hint of<lb />
snow, and the fecal stench of award<lb />
shows fills the air.<lb />
I don't know about anybody<lb />
else, but these things have a bad<lb />
tendency to make my blood pres-<lb />
sure go up. Every year I let my cu-<lb />
riosity get the better of me and<lb />
tune in, at least for a few fateful<lb />
minutes. Inevitably, something stu-<lb />
pid happens (remember that disas-<lb />
trous Jethro Tull win for best<lb />
Heavy Metal album a few years<lb />
back?), I curse loudly and quickly<lb />
shut off the TV. The nominations<lb />
alone are often enough to set me<lb />
off. How long will it be before<lb />
somebody realizes that the music<lb />
of Kenny G is not good jazz? It's<lb />
not just TV awards either; maga-<lb />
zines make some bonehead picks<lb />
themselves.<lb />
For example, I recently sub-<lb />
jected myself to checking out Roll-<lb />
ing Stone's special awards issue.<lb />
In their Readers' Choice awards,<lb />
Nine Inch Nails competes with<lb />
Aerosmith and Soundgarden for<lb />
Best Heavy Metal Band. Excuse<lb />
me? I haven't listened to metal in<lb />
a long time, but I really don't think<lb />
any of those bands qualify. And to<lb />
make matters worse, Soundgarden<lb />
won the category! I guess recycling<lb />
Black Sabbath riffs pays off in the<lb />
long run.<lb />
Of course, the real problem<lb />
is that they're comparing apples<lb />
and oranges. How do you judge<lb />
whether Nine Inch Nails' heavy in-<lb />
dustrial rage is better than<lb />
Aerosmith's last-of-the-dinosaurs<lb />
sex-rock slickness, or that<lb />
Soundgarden's retro-acid<lb />
meanderings are the best of the<lb />
three? To be fair, Rolling Stone's<lb />
Critics' Choice list was a bit more<lb />
on-target, with Helmet, Pantera<lb />
and Metallica up for the metal<lb />
crown. But I don't recall Metallica<lb />
actually releasing anything in<lb />
1994, so I'm not sure why they<lb />
were even considered.<lb />
On a brighter note, the<lb />
Goiden Globes were this past week-<lb />
end, and their choices are always<lb />
at least entertaining. Less politi-<lb />
See BUCKET page 9<lb />
beauty through music.<lb />
Red Grammer began his career<lb />
as a pop-rock musician in the '70s.<lb />
His entire musical outlook changed<lb />
in 1981 when he was chosen to re-<lb />
place Glenn Yarborough in the fa-<lb />
mous folk group The Limelighters.<lb />
He stayed with The Limelighters<lb />
until 1990, when he and his wife<lb />
Kathy decided to concentrate fully<lb />
on children's music.<lb />
He could not have made a bet-<lb />
ter decision. While performing with<lb />
The Limelighters made him famous,<lb />
entertaining children has made him<lb />
happy. And he has made children<lb />
and their parents across the coun-<lb />
try happy in return.<lb />
In addition to performing his<lb />
songs in live concerts and on tele-<lb />
vision, Red Grammer has released<lb />
three albums: Can You Sound Just<lb />
Like Me?, Teaching Peace and<lb />
Down the Do-Re-Mi.<lb />
These albums have quickly<lb />
become favorites with children and<lb />
parents alike. He has made several<lb />
appearances on the children's show<lb />
Eureka's Castle and has his own<lb />
concert special on the Disney Chan-<lb />
nel. And now he's coming to ECU.<lb />
There are many reasons to<lb />
see this show. But the most impor-<lb />
tant is the message that Red<lb />
Grammer conveys. He not only be-<lb />
lieves that people can remember,<lb />
but he also helps them do it<lb />
through his music.<lb />
Give in to your "inner child<lb />
Red Grammer will be performing at<lb />
2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28. Tick-<lb />
ets are $5 for ECU students, $6 for<lb />
ECU faculty and staff and $8 for<lb />
the public.<lb />
Feel free to clap and laugh.<lb />
Enjoy yourself. And, when no one<lb />
is looking, sing along. But when the<lb />
show is over, don't forget what you<lb />
heard. Carry it with you and watch<lb />
the world change.<lb />

Editor's note: This Miy ran fa<lb />
last Thursday's TEC with some print-<lb />
ing errors. Today we present it again<lb />
in Us correct form,<lb />
Ifs not going to get better<lb />
around here all at once; it comes in<lb />
small pieces. The ftrcolator Coffee-<lb />
house is one of those pieces. Lo-<lb />
cated right next to the Park The-<lb />
ater; it offers a great view of<lb />
fifth Street and some of<lb />
the best coffee<lb />
around It's not<lb />
lost the coffee that<lb />
makes it great,<lb />
however; the at-<lb />
mosphere h<lb />
stimulating and it<lb />
may just help to<lb />
put some culture iato<lb />
this 20 bar town.<lb />
The culture aspect comes<lb />
in the form of live acoustic musk ev-<lb />
ery Friday and Saturday night and<lb />
poetry readings (featured artist and<lb />
open mike) every Thursday. The Per-<lb />
colator also provi&is a space for art<lb />
shows: Any artist with enough mate-<lb />
rial can display their works without<lb />
charge for two weeks. So we have live<lb />
musfei poetry and ait all in the same<lb />
place. This is something Greenville has<lb />
needed for a long tin.<lb />
In talking with the two people<lb />
that make the place vvork (Greg and<lb />
Bradley), I got thorotighly educated<lb />
in the good and bad of making coffee.<lb />
They get their beans from an indepen-<lb />
dent supplier in Durham and make<lb />
sure there is very little time between<lb />
roasting, grinding and brewing of the<lb />
coffee to ensure optimum flavor. Cof<lb />
fee beans that sit around lose flavor<lb />
and that is the highest of crimes in<lb />
the coffee business. Their flavored<lb />
coffees are flavored after they are<lb />
made, which is the only proper-way to<lb />
do it The baked goods are supplied by<lb />
The Uppercrust Bakery just down the<lb />
street Everything in the place comes<lb />
to you fresh and pretty darn tasty.<lb />
Then there is what may argu-<lb />
ably be die best aspect of the place,<lb />
the price. The most expensive<lb />
drink in the house is a<lb />
Cafe Mocha at 2 dol-<lb />
lars. In fact there are<lb />
only two items that<lb />
cost over 2 dollars<lb />
and they are baked<lb />
goods. These prices<lb />
are especially good<lb />
for the perpetually<lb />
broke college crowd<lb />
On the inside<lb />
it is spacious with a<lb />
vast variety of seating that<lb />
can be shifted around for caffeine-<lb />
inspired group conversations. There<lb />
are also the intimate window seats<lb />
that are great for watching the world<lb />
go by. The Percolator's long business<lb />
hours (7 am. to midnight during the<lb />
week and 7-1 on weekends) can ac-<lb />

Robbins fails IQ test<lb />
New comedy<lb />
leaves a hollow<lb />
impression<lb />
Ike Shibley<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The comedies of the '30s and<lb />
'40s look so flawless on screen. You<lb />
watch a film like His Girl Friday or<lb />
Bringing Up Baby or Happened<lb />
One Xight and you start to beiieve<lb />
that making those films was easy. The<lb />
witty, urbane dialogue and the breezy<lb />
style seem effortless. Cary Grant.<lb />
Katharine Hepburn, Clark Gable and<lb />
Jimmy Stewart all seemed perfect in<lb />
their roles, like they stepped out of<lb />
life onto the screen. You might think<lb />
that recapturing that style would re-<lb />
quire little effort on the part of film-<lb />
makers, but you would be making a<lb />
hugeomistake.<lb />
The most recent evidence of<lb />
how difficult comedy can be comes in<lb />
the form of IQ. which stars Tim<lb />
Robbins, Meg Ryan and Walter<lb />
Matthau. Though IQ causes no real<lb />
harm, the film leaves the viewer feel-<lb />
ing somehow betrayed at having in-<lb />
vested time in such a hollow film.<lb />
IQ tells the romantic tale of Ed<lb />
(Robbins). a garage mechanic who<lb />
meets Catherine Boyd (Ryan) one day<lb />
at work and instantly feels an attrac-<lb />
tion. When Ed visits Catherine's<lb />
house to return a watch she left at<lb />
the garage he discovers that<lb />
Catherine's uncle is Albert Einstein<lb />
(Matthau). Set in 1955 in Princeton,<lb />
NJ, IQ weaves a tangled web of play-<lb />
ful deceit and love while clouding the<lb />
barrier between fact and fiction.<lb />
When Ed meets Einstein they<lb />
talk about Catherine and how Ed has<lb />
fallen for her. Because Einstein does<lb />
not want Catherine to marry the<lb />
stuffy, uptight psychology professor<lb />
to whom she is engaged, he agrees to<lb />
help Ed woo Catherine. Unfortunately,<lb />
Catherine will only become interested<lb />
in men with intellect. Thus Einstein's<lb />
challenge is to make Ed seem smart,<lb />
even though Ed had trouble finish-<lb />
ing high school. The ploy used by<lb />
Einstein is to make Ed the author of<lb />
a cold fusion paper that promises to<lb />
put the Americans in front of the So-<lb />
viets in the space race. The deception<lb />
eventually unravels, as the plot is wont<lb />
to do in a film of this sort, leaving Ed<lb />
and Einstein with a lot of explaining<lb />
to do.<lb />
One of the big problems with<lb />
IQ is the jarring mix of fact and fic-<lb />
tion. The space race in'the tyaus was<lb />
deadly serious to Americans at the<lb />
time, but in IQ the competition is<lb />
played for laughs. Also milked for<lb />
laughs is the idea of plagiarism. The<lb />
comedy is never broad enough to ob-<lb />
viate a discussion of the serious is-<lb />
sues, nor incisive enough to disarm<lb />
the seriousness. Instead, an odd mix<lb />
of truth and fantasy meld into an un-<lb />
comfortably tart concoction.<lb />
The stars all try their best.<lb />
Robbins is winning as the common<lb />
man. Yet the actor never makes a full<lb />
character out of Ed. Instead, Robbins<lb />
seems content to have him remain<lb />
pleasantly amorphous with no real<lb />
conviction other than winning<lb />
Catherine's heart. Meg Ryan shines<lb />
radiantly upon the screen, but her<lb />
character is also one-sided. The film<lb />
only modestly accentuates her intelli-<lb />
gence but plays up her clumsiness and<lb />
uncertainty. Matthau makes a great<lb />
Einstein but how much the fictional-<lb />
ized Einstein resembles the real one<lb />
is in doubt. Einstein's three scientific<lb />
friends make an odd combination who<lb />
evoke the biggest laughs in the film.<lb />
One scene in particular, involv-<lb />
ing all four scientists left me with a<lb />
huge smile. Ed agrees to allow test-<lb />
ing to determine his IQ in front of an<lb />
auditorium filled with people. The<lb />
questions are flashed on a giant<lb />
screen and Ed must answer 50 of them<lb />
in 18 minutes. Einstein and friends<lb />
arrange themselves in a row and each<lb />
coughs, or otherwise signals, when his<lb />
position (A,B,C,D or E) corresponds<lb />
to the right answer. If the answer is E<lb />
none of them do anything or else they<lb />
try to make Catherine, who sits next<lb />
to them, speak out. Though the scene<lb />
made me laugh at the time, in retro-<lb />

those bands trying to capture the<lb />

bands like REM and the B-52's so<lb />

doing a pretty good job and show<lb />
great potential on their debut al-<lb />

This 11 song CD is filled<lb />
with songs that range from being<lb />
happy go lucky to melancholy and<lb />
bluesy. The first song on the album<lb />
happens to be the same as its title.<lb />
"Set in Motion" is a very upbeat<lb />
song that is filled with the power-<lb />

In this song she shows her amaz-<lb />

smooth as silk one minute to the<lb />
scratchy heartfelt abilities of Stevie<lb />

There is also a very big folk<lb />

song. "Giving Myself Away" has<lb />
beautiful acoustic backup by Rob<lb />

Tattooed shadow fromP7<lb />

GARY, Ind. (AP) - Maria<lb />
Rodriguez was so fearful of one day<lb />
being put on life support, she had a<lb />
living will tattooed on her stomach.<lb />
The 40-year-old nurse said she<lb />
has seen enough patients and their<lb />
families suffer when lives are pro-<lb />
longed.<lb />
"I would never want my famib'<lb />
to suffer seeing me in a vegetative<lb />
state, to have them mortgage their<lb />
homes and go broke paying for my<lb />
care she said Wednesday.<lb />
The red and black tattoo fea-<lb />
tures a red heart slashed with the<lb />
universal "no" sign and the words<lb />
"No Code The will reads: "Pain and<lb />
comfort only. Organ donor It ends<lb />
with her initials, "MR<lb />
Rodriguez said the 'No Code'<lb />
instructs hospital and ambulance<lb />
workers not to resuscitate her or keep<lb />
her alive by artificial means.<lb />
"When my name gets called, I<lb />
don't want anything holding me up<lb />
she said.<lb />
The will, however, may not be<lb />
legally binding.<lb />
Indiana's living will statute re-<lb />
quires the will to be dated and signed<lb />
by the person writing it and two wit-<lb />
nesses. Although her will doesn't meet<lb />
those requirements. Rodriguez said<lb />
she hopes it is respected.<lb />
"I don't expect people to agree<lb />
with me she said. "But this is my<lb />
body, my life and my belief. And I hope<lb />
they respect that"<lb />
Rodriguez got the tattoo last<lb />
month after suffering chest pains she<lb />
attributed to a June miscarriage, job<lb />
stress and Christmas. Her doctor said<lb />
it was nerves.<lb />
Convincing her husband of 24<lb />
years, Gilbert Rodriguez, 50, was<lb />
tough, she said.<lb />
"I never want to let her go he<lb />
said. "But I understand<lb />
Mulkey like syrup does pancakes.<lb />
The drum beats provided by Dusty<lb />
Edinger, who also sings on the al-<lb />
bum, are simple yet strong and en-<lb />
ergetic. For some reason this song<lb />
makes me think of some of Natalie<lb />
Merchant's past stuff, and it is a<lb />
very enjoyable ballad indeed.<lb />
The fourth song, "Common<lb />
Ground catches you completely by<lb />
surprise because Lori has been re-<lb />
placed by one of the two male vo-<lb />
calists in the band, but for the life<lb />
of me I couldn't figure out which<lb />
one it was.<lb />
They never really gave him<lb />
any credit. With him singing, the<lb />
band has much more of a Dave<lb />
Mathews feel to them. The fact that<lb />
they incorporate a male singer in<lb />
their band makes them much more<lb />
respectable to me because they<lb />
don't focus just on Thurman as<lb />
their main talent. This song has<lb />
many well-written harmonies in it,<lb />
but after four minutes, I started to<lb />
get bored.<lb />
My favorite song on the al-<lb />
bum is "Resolution It is another<lb />
really well written ballad that has<lb />
a slow beat with Lori singing her<lb />
heart out about how "He doesn't<lb />
know what makes me laugh He<lb />
doesn't know what songs I write<lb />
You don't know what I've gone<lb />
through And you don't know how<lb />
hard I've tried<lb />
As you can see, she is talking<lb />
about how her lover just doesn't<lb />
know her at all, and that's why she<lb />

The Shadowcaste has five<lb />
members whose influences range<lb />
from Led Zeppelin to Stevie Nicks.<lb />
They have all known from the be-<lb />

In fact, they changed their name<lb />

their own record label, Barfly<lb />
Records.<lb />
Set in Motion was produced<lb />
by John Keane who has worked<lb />
with such acts as the Indigo Girls.<lb />
Michael Stipe has heaped great<lb />

toured with acts such as Toad the<lb />

all that they claim.<lb />
So, if you like bands that<lb />

in their own special stylings to a<lb />
genre that is often emulated and<lb />
rot innovated. The Associated<lb />
Press, Boston Globe and Guitar<lb />
World have all praised Bloodline as<lb />
being a new band adding new life<lb />
to an old style of rock.<lb />
Bloodline has just finished<lb />
their first untitled full length album<lb />
on EMI records. It is a 12-track re-<lb />
lease with sounds that range from<lb />
heavy Southern rock to soft and<lb />
twangy acoustic blues. The open-<lb />
ing track "Stone Cold Hearted" is<lb />
a jam sounding much like Stevie<lb />
Ray Vaughn's "Crossfire The<lb />
rhythm is driving and the solos are<lb />
technical and flashy. The rest of the<lb />
tracks follow in this format. The<lb />
band lays down some very tight<lb />
rhythms that are danceable and<lb />
funky, and Smokin' Joe adds in<lb />
much solo improvisation that seems<lb />
way tof good to be the sounds of a<lb />
17-year-old.<lb />
"The Storm the one instru-<lb />
mental track on the CD, really<lb />
shows the talent contained in this<lb />
band. They alternate from jazzy to<lb />
ballistic funk, and Smokin' Joe is<lb />
definitely in the Joe Satriani mode<lb />
with his solos. "Bad Girls" is a blues<lb />
tune complete with slide guitars<lb />
and a sound reminiscent of Bo<lb />
Diddly.<lb />
With a few exceptions most<lb />
of the songs on this CD are upbeat<lb />
and supported by driving funk<lb />
rhythms. In the song structure and<lb />
overall sound they are an Allman<lb />
Brothers for the '90s, Southern<lb />
rock with a hard edge. The hard<lb />
edge is accentuated by the flashy<lb />
leads of Smokin' Joe, whose talent<lb />
is undeniable. Davis' drumming is<lb />
surprisingly far from jazz most of<lb />
the time; he is a rock drummer<lb />
without a doubt. For such a young<lb />
band they have produced some very<lb />
impressive sounds, yet I think they<lb />
could use some more experience,<lb />
not musically, but in life. I am con-<lb />
vinced that the human condition is<lb />
a great force for the shaping of an<lb />
artist, and anything with a major<lb />
blues influence needs to be driven<lb />
by the trials and tribulations of liv-<lb />
ing. For example, there is no doubt<lb />
that Robert Johnson and Jimi<lb />
Hendrix had lived what they were<lb />
playing.<lb />
Bloodline are some very<lb />
young bloods, they are overloaded<lb />
with talent, but even the best steel<lb />
must be tempered in the fire to<lb />
reach its potential. I'm sure they<lb />
will be around for awhile, their first<lb />
album is good but not great. Just<lb />
give them some time. Bloodline will<lb />
be playing The Attic on Tuesday<lb />
night where you can judge their<lb />
talent for yourself.<lb />
IQ<lb />
from p. 7<lb />
that auditorium could figure out<lb />
what was happening. Suspension of<lb />
disbelief is necessary in a film, but<lb />
IQ stretches those limits to the break-<lb />
ing point and then keeps tugging.<lb />
The plot becomes unnecessar-<lb />
ily complex. Charles Duming plays<lb />
a character whose function is never<lb />
fully explained. In one scene<lb />
Durning's character tells Catherine<lb />
to get close to the record player in<lb />
an oddly sexual way. The inclusion<lb />
of Dwight Eisenhower into the plot<lb />
served no purpose. The president's<lb />
presence does nothing to further the<lb />
plot or to help define the charac-<lb />
ters. The script for IQ needed some<lb />
intelligence.<lb />
The directing falters too,<lb />
which is unusual for Fred Schepisi,<lb />
whose Roxanne is one of Steve<lb />
Martin's best films. Schepisi twice<lb />
employs a slow-motion shot of a<lb />
motorcycle in mid-air for no appar-<lb />
ent reason. The flow of the film gets<lb />
interrupted by shots like this, and<lb />
the seamless comedy starts to show<lb />
signs of wear. The best comedies of<lb />
the '40s did not need camera tricks<lb />
but instead relied on the timing of<lb />
their stars.<lb />
A poor script, ill-advised direc-<lb />
tion and stars that cannot compen-<lb />
sate for the lack of the first two<lb />
doom IQ. I find the situation ironic:<lb />
A film titled IQ treats its audience<lb />
as if it has no brains.<lb />
On a scale of one to ten, IQ<lb />
rates a four.<lb />
BUCKET from p. 7<lb />
always at least entertaining. Less<lb />
political and genre-biased than the<lb />
Oscars and Emmys, the Golden<lb />
Globes usually represent a clearer<lb />
picture of the year in television and<lb />
movies. I was pleased to see Mar-<lb />
tin Landau win Best Supporting<lb />
Actor for his role as Bela Lugosi in<lb />
Ed Wood, for instance.<lb />
But the big surprise for me<lb />
was X-Files winning Best TV<lb />
Drama. Up against stiff competition<lb />
from such shows as ER, Picket<lb />
Fences and NYPD Blue, the Fox<lb />
Network's weird mysterysuspense<lb />
show didn't seem to stand a chance.<lb />
At first I thought it might have been<lb />
a political decision, giving TV's big-<lb />
gest cult show the award just to<lb />
create controversy. But X-Files does<lb />
things with, cameras that are un-<lb />
heard of in network television (that<lb />
is to say, it moves them around<lb />
rather than just settling for a hand-<lb />
! .<lb />
ful of standard shots) and its act-<lb />
ing and scripts can stand respect-<lb />
ably beside anything on the screen.<lb />
So I must applaud the<lb />
Golden Globes for having the guts<lb />
to recognize quality wherever it<lb />
lurks. But that doesn't mean any-<lb />
body else out there has a clue. The<lb />
Oscars, Emmys and Grammys are<lb />
still to come, and while they may<lb />
surprise me, I'm not holding my<lb />

mond. This game was a homecoming<lb />
for him; Basham grew up in Roanoke.<lb />
Va. before playing his last year of high<lb />
school in Maryland.<lb />
"I just came out and got a couple<lb />
shots Basham said. "I was just feeling<lb />
it I was getting better looks against the<lb />
zone<lb />
This game was also a homecom-<lb />
ing for ECU freshman point guard Tony<lb />
Parham, who grew up in Washington<lb />
D.C. Parham scored 10 points in front<lb />
of a large group of family and friends.<lb />
"It was a special night for me,<lb />
coming back home Parham said. "You<lb />
don't want to go back to your univer-<lb />
sity with a loss from your hometown. I<lb />
was just hoping to go in there and not<lb />
turn the ball over<lb />
Going into this game, the high-<lb />
scoring Patriots were expected to run<lb />
away with the win using head coach<lb />
Paul Westhead's up-tempo strategy to<lb />
their advantage. This was not the case.<lb />
George Mason struggled to get good<lb />
shots against the larger and taller Pi-<lb />
rates, shooting a dismal 15 percent from<lb />
behind the three-point arc.<lb />
"It was good. Sometimes we don't<lb />
jump on teams like we are supposed<lb />
to Basham said. "This time we jumped<lb />
on them and stuck to it"<lb />
"I thought our team did a good<lb />
job and played the kind of game we<lb />
wanted to Pirate head coach Eddie<lb />
Payne said. "We established a flow, and<lb />
kept them from getting into their flow.<lb />
I think, in terms of the overall game, it<lb />
was big. We had some big performances<lb />
- first time we had six guys in double<lb />
figures<lb />
Big men Chuckie Robinson and<lb />
Anton Gill also played well, each scor-<lb />
ing 11 points while controlling the paint<lb />
defensively. Shooting guard Skipp<lb />
Schaefbauer bounced back from a 1-of-<lb />
6 shooting night against Richmond by<lb />
going 7-12 from the field en route to 15<lb />
points.<lb />
Mason fell to 5-10 for the year<lb />
and has yet to win in conference despite<lb />
averaging nearly 100 points per game.<lb />
"It's easier to make shots when<lb />
you've won your last two, three, four or<lb />
five games Westhead said. "You have<lb />
to win a game first to get things going.<lb />
It was just a flat game, but I also think<lb />
East Carolina did a fine job. They ex-<lb />
ecute well. It's a tribute to Coach<lb />
Payne<lb />
On Wednesday. ECU took a 69-<lb />
67 win in Williams Arena over the Uni-<lb />
versity of Richmond Spiders. Point<lb />
guard Tony Parham converted with 25<lb />
seconds to go to give the Pirates their<lb />
first conference win of the season.<lb />
"1 knew those shots were good<lb />
when they left my hand Parham said.<lb />
The Pirates were led by a career-<lb />
high 20 points by small forward Tim<lb />
Basham. including six three-pointers.<lb />
"I just came in and stepped up<lb />
my game Basham said. 'They were<lb />
sagging down on Anton Gill) and<lb />
Chuckie Robinson, so I hit my outside<lb />
shot to free them up<lb />
Basham scored several of his<lb />
points on assists from Parham, who had<lb />
a careeer-high eight assists.<lb />
Leading 67-65 with a minute to<lb />
go, UR's Adam Ward missed a uncon-<lb />
tested layup, killing their momentum.<lb />
After getting the rebound, the Pirates<lb />
worked the ball inside to Chuckie<lb />
Robinson, who tied the score and set-<lb />
ting the stage for Parham's game win-<lb />
ning shots.<lb />
Defensively in the second half, the<lb />
Pirates turned up the intensity by bot-<lb />
tling up Kass Weaver, who scored most<lb />
of his 24 points in the first half.<lb />
The win was ECU'S first over<lb />
Richmond since January 10,1987. ECU<lb />
had lost 16 of their last 18 meetings<lb />
with the Spiders, and holds an all-time<lb />
record of 2345 after the game.<lb />

Junior guard Keri Chaconas led the<lb />
way with 19 points for Mason, who<lb />
improved to 4-10 (2-2 in the CAA).<lb />
Tomeika "Fruky" Blackmon scored<lb />
all of her team-high 16 points in the<lb />
second half for ECU (4-9 overall. 1-<lb />

The Lady Pirates led 29-28 at<lb />
the half, but could not contain<lb />
Chaconas, who also had five assists.<lb />
The last time the Lady Pirates had<lb />
the lead was at the 16:15 mark of<lb />
the second half, when Blackmon hit<lb />
a eight-foot jumper. Coach Jim Lewis<lb />
of George Mason switched defenses<lb />
against ECU.<lb />
"We always try to get our play-<lb />

Another key to GMU's victory<lb />

of our freshman Krista Jay. She had<lb />
not practiced in 10 days due to an<lb />

On Friday night. Danielle<lb />

with two-tenths of a second left gave<lb />
the ECU Lady Pirates a 87-85 over-<lb />
time win over American University.<lb />
The win was the Lady Pirates first<lb />
in CAA conference play.<lb />
The victory broke a 16-game<lb />
CAA losing streak for Coach Rosie<lb />
Thompson and ECU. Sophmore<lb />
Shay Hayes sent the game into over-<lb />
time with two free throws, while<lb />
Tomekia "Fruky" Blackmon scored<lb />
nine of her 12 points for the Lady<lb />
Pirates in the overtime period.<lb />
Blackmon led the Pirates with<lb />
26 points and eight rebounds, and<lb />
junior Danielle Charlesworth con-<lb />
tributed 23 points. Justine Allpress<lb />

Phillips gave a great performance<lb />
in the 200 Fly, and sophomore<lb />
Lesley Hawley captured the 200<lb />
Back for the ECU.<lb />
The Lady Pirate diving team<lb />
was not as fortunate, failing to cap-<lb />
ture victory in either the one meter<lb />
or the three meter dives. Sopho-<lb />
more Beth Hanna placed second in<lb />
the one-meter dive, while the three-<lb />
meter became an exhibition.<lb />
As the Pirate men also ripped<lb />
through a young and less-talented<lb />
Spiders team, they evened their<lb />
record and looked to this coming<lb />
weeks' meets.<lb />
The 400 Medley Relay team<lb />
of sophomores Brian Wall, Alan<lb />
Pritchett, Erik Griffin and Jay Noles<lb />
produced the first of the Pirates'<lb />
points.<lb />
Junior McGee Moody and<lb />
freshman Andy Wright finished<lb />
strong as the Pirates swept the Spi-<lb />
ders, 139-91. Moody was challenged<lb />
by teammate James Baker in the 50<lb />
Free, but held on to win it and the<lb />
100 Free. Wright added to the Pi-<lb />
rate thrashing contributing victo-<lb />
ries in the 1000 Free and the 500<lb />
Free.<lb />
Other top finishers were se-<lb />
nior John Donovan, who collected<lb />
the 200 Free, freshman Jim<lb />
Broughal, who captured the 200<lb />
IM, sophomor Ryan Barlowe add-<lb />
ing a victory in the 200 Fly and<lb />
sophomore Chris Bembenek top-<lb />
ping off the swimmers with a 200<lb />
Back win.<lb />
Pirate divers struggled to<lb />
overtake the Spiders behind senior<lb />
Scott Kupec and freshman Stephen<lb />
Barnes, as Richmond diver Jay<lb />
Carroll stole both the one-meter<lb />
and three-meter dives. Barnes had<lb />
the better finish as he took second<lb />
in the one-meter, while the three-<lb />
meter dive became an exhibition.<lb />
On Tuesday, the Pirates will<lb />
travel to Chapel Hill in a non-con-<lb />
ference meet with the Tarheels.<lb />
Kobe and the Pirates will re-<lb />
turn on Saturday, January 28 to<lb />
host the final meet of the season<lb />
before the CAA Championships.<lb />
Coming to Greenville will b"e the<lb />
