FSU develops hi-tech college ID card<lb />
For students at Florida State University in Tallahassee, pay-<lb />
ing tuition and buying books can now be as easy as showing their<lb />
ID cards. The combination identificationdebit card can also be<lb />
used to buy food, clothes and tires from over 200 area merchants.<lb />
The FSU Card can even be used to pay for a haircut, make a long-<lb />
distance phone call, pay overdue library fines or get money from an<lb />
automatic teller machine. The card operates through Tallahassee<lb />
State Bank and is now covered by the Honor ATM and Plus<lb />
Network systems. The university is currently refitting exterior<lb />
doors in residence halls to replace keys with the FSUCard. Card<lb />
holders will also be able to receive financial aid from granting<lb />
agencies directly into their FSUCard account.<lb />
MIT settles antitrust suit<lb />
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Justice De-<lb />
partment have settled an antitrust suit that accused the school of<lb />
fixing prices that financial aid applicants paid to attend. MIT<lb />
contended that establishing such prices with other Ivy League<lb />
schools allowed the greatest number of talented, needy students to<lb />
receive a limited amount of aid. For years, MIT met regularly with<lb />
Harvard, Yale, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton<lb />
and Perm to agree upon proposed tuition levels for students who<lb />
had been admitted to more than one of the institutions. The U.S.<lb />
Justice Department contended, however, that such meetings vio-<lb />
lated the Sherman Antitrust Act. The schools denied any wrongdo-<lb />
ing, but agreed to stop meeting and sharing information. MIT<lb />
continued the case until December, when the school agreed to cease<lb />
the practice as well.<lb />

Towering textbook totals touches off talks j<lb />
What would you say to renting text-<lb />
books?<lb />
Let's be honest textbook prices are<lb />
ridiculously high. In some cases, student<lb />
bookstores have been known to jack prices<lb />
up 300 percent past normal retail price. Now,<lb />
come on inflation is one thing, but 300<lb />
percent? Really<lb />
Currently, ECU is putting together the<lb />
needed information and gathering opinions<lb />
about implementing a campus-wide system<lb />
where students could rent books. The idea<lb />
came from Appalachian State University.<lb />
ASU students rent their books each semes-<lb />
ter for a $48 fee, which is incorporated into<lb />
their student fees. If they like a book so<lb />
much that they want to keep it for their very<lb />
own (and hug it and squeeze it and name it<lb />
George), they can purchase the text at the<lb />
end of the semester for a 20 percent dis-<lb />
count.<lb />
If this system were implemented at<lb />
ECU, it could save students anywhere from<lb />
$50 and $175 each semester. Fifty bucks here,<lb />
a hundred bucks there it all adds up. The<lb />
average English major, for example, could<lb />
save $1,400 in four years. Not bad, when you<lb />
consider who ultimately gets this textbook<lb />
money those nasty, corporate cash-grub-<lb />
bers.<lb />
And it all starts with us. We are a cap-<lb />
tive audience. Putty in the hands of the<lb />
corrupt. We need textbooks, simply because<lb />
we're students in college and classes require<lb />
books. So where do we go? To one of two<lb />
places: UBE or Student Stores. Since these<lb />
people obviously know that we are in need,<lb />
they are free to charge as much as their little<lb />
hearts desire, above and beyond the extra that<lb />
the publishing houses are charging.<lb />
To look at it another way, first the pub-<lb />
lishers raise the prices a little to make a profit.<lb />
After that, the books are sent and the book-<lb />
stores themselves, in order to make a profit,<lb />
raise the price again. The end result a inno-<lb />
cent, needy student is stuck with a book (that<lb />
initially cost $20) costing $80, or an increase of<lb />
300 percent.<lb />
SGA Speaker Brynn Thomas would like<lb />
to see this implemented by the spring semes-<lb />
ter of 1995. Don't hold your breath, though.<lb />
Still in its infant stage, this plan has yet to be<lb />
mulled over by a committee. Also, the univer-<lb />
sity would initially have to invest money into<lb />
the program, which we all know is highly<lb />
unlikely (unless they're investing in some-<lb />
thing like a rec center or a pretty clock or<lb />
something). The question has also come up<lb />
about the fate of UBE, since it is not a univer-<lb />
sity-run store.<lb />
There's a lot of planning ahead, but hope-<lb />
fully, with a little insight, the university can<lb />
do something for us that we'll really care<lb />
about and appreciate. Books are wonderful<lb />
tools in the quest for a quality education, but<lb />
not if they cause a student to file for bank-<lb />
ruptcy in the process.<lb />
So keep your eyes peeled.<lb />

President<lb />
Reagan would<lb />
be enough to<lb />
disabuse any-<lb />
one of such no-<lb />
tons" <lb />
T e m -<lb />
peramentally, as well as ideo-<lb />
logically. Bush was a classic<lb />
moderate. Any examination of<lb />
his record shows that Bush was<lb />
incapable of any sort of ideol-<lb />
ogy beyond a desire to be liked<lb />
and a near obsession with com-<lb />
promise, especially in domes-<lb />
tic policy.<lb />
There is nothing that<lb />
should irritate serious conser-<lb />
vatives than to hear the phrase<lb />
"Reagan-Bush administra-<lb />
tions because this suggests<lb />
that the two administrations<lb />
followed the same policies.<lb />
Bush inherited a vigorous<lb />
economy and a powerful po-<lb />
litical coalition of Americans<lb />
committed to limited govern-<lb />
ment, a strong na tional defense<lb />
and respect for the values upon<lb />
which society was built. Only<lb />
in these last two areas did Bush<lb />
even make even a passing at-<lb />
tempt to follow Reagan's ex-<lb />
ample.<lb />
The economy which Bush<lb />
inherited in January 1989 was<lb />
in its 75th month of continu-<lb />
ous growth. Eighteen million<lb />
new jobs had been created<lb />
since Reagan's tax cuts took<lb />
effect in 1983. Inflation was<lb />
down 13.5 from 1980, to only<lb />
4.6. The biggest economic prob-<lb />
lem he faced, the budget deficit,<lb />
had fallen for three consecutive<lb />
years. The Democrat-controlled<lb />
Congressional Budget Office<lb />
projected that it would be only<lb />
aHKHHHa $135 billion<lb />
in 1992, less<lb />
Bush was<lb />
incapable of any<lb />
sort of ideology<lb />
beyond a desire to<lb />
be liked and a near<lb />
obsession with<lb />
compromise <lb />
than 2 per-<lb />
cent of the<lb />
Gross Do-<lb />
m e s t i c<lb />
Product.<lb />
Instead, he<lb />
turned his<lb />
back on the<lb />
policies he<lb />
inherited<lb />
and agreed to the disastrous 1990<lb />
buaget deal. Predictably, this<lb />
biggest tax increase in history<lb />
(until President Clinton's bud-<lb />
get last summer) caused a reces-<lb />
sion and a dramatic increase in<lb />
the deficit.<lb />
Worse for conservatives<lb />
than the actual tax increases were<lb />
the loss of the ground which had<lb />
previously provided the best dis-<lb />
tinction betweei the two parties.<lb />
Had Bush but stood up to the<lb />
Congress (which throughout his<lb />
term was always, even at the end,<lb />
more unpopular than he) and<lb />
refused to budge from his cam-<lb />
paign promise, the American<lb />
people would have rallied to his<lb />
side, and the distinctions be-<lb />
tween the two parties would<lb />
have been fully seen. Instead,<lb />
Bush fueled the cynical belief that<lb />
there was no real difference be-<lb />
tween the two parties.<lb />
Bush also returned the<lb />
country to the Carter era policy<lb />
of over-regulation. He expanded<lb />
the number of federal regulators<lb />
back to the Carter level of 120,000.<lb />
He signed a new Clear Air Act,<lb />
which increased the cost of envi-<lb />
ronmental regulation from $25<lb />
to $40 billion, a nearly 33 percent<lb />

By Barbara Irwin<lb />
Americans obsessed with "real truth" dramas<lb />
increase, all for uncertain envi-<lb />
ronmental gains. His cabinet ap-<lb />
pointments, such as William<lb />
Reilly at the Environmental Pro-<lb />
tection Agency, saddled small<lb />
businesses withbillions in higher<lb />
costs, paperwork and criminal<lb />
penalties for honest errors, as<lb />
well as instituted a new wetlands<lb />
which threatened the life sav-<lb />
ings of thousands of small prop-<lb />
erty owners. Between 1989 and<lb />
1992, the regulatory burden on<lb />
small business increased by more<lb />
than 34 percent.<lb />
As if all this were not bad<lb />
enough for conservatives, Bush<lb />
also let the proud Reagan record<lb />
of the '80s be bashed as merely a<lb />
"decadeof greed" when only the<lb />
"rich got richer" and the only<lb />
jobs created were for burger flip-<lb />
pers. Not once did he rise to the<lb />
defense of the policies which<lb />
formed the core of the Republi-<lb />
can strategy.<lb />
Bush even refused to de-<lb />
fend himself when accused of<lb />
racism after the Willie Horton ad<lb />
in 1988. Bush did support a few<lb />
good programs: school choice,<lb />
capital gains tax cuts and term<lb />
limits. But as in all things, he was<lb />
incapable of expressing logical<lb />
reasons why they should be en-<lb />
acted.<lb />
So I wish that we would get<lb />
rid of all these "Don't Blame Me,<lb />
I Voted For Bush" bumper stick-<lb />
ers. I will admit that I voted for<lb />
Bush. Given the options (a loon,<lb />
a prevaricator, and Bush) was<lb />
there any choice? But whether<lb />
Mr. Clinton or Mr. Bush won,<lb />
the basic course of the country<lb />
would be unchanged from the<lb />
previous four years.<lb />
Instead of talking about the<lb />
end of the Reagan-Bush era, we<lb />
should rather realize that, as John<lb />
O'Sullivan says, we are really in<lb />
the second (and hopefully last)<lb />
term of the Bush-Clinton era.<lb />
When I first decided to do<lb />
an opinion piece on the world<lb />
famous King of Pop Rock,<lb />
Michael Jackson, I found for the<lb />
first time that perhaps I had no<lb />
opinion, or that my opinion is as<lb />
ambiguous as all the facts sur-<lb />
rounding this notorious man and<lb />
the compromising situation his<lb />
accuser seems to be found. Un-<lb />
less you have been living in a<lb />
cave, everyone knows as much<lb />
as the next person, so let's skip<lb />
the recap and concentrate on<lb />
where the matter rests.<lb />
This past week, both par-<lb />
ties agreed to settle out of court<lb />
with a sum of any where from $5-<lb />
$10 million going to the young<lb />
boy and his family who are ac-<lb />
cusing Jackson of sexual miscon-<lb />
duct. At first, I, like a lot of the<lb />
general public, believed that this<lb />
act of payment was out of guilt.<lb />
Why pay if you didn't play, right?<lb />
If Michael Jackson is innocent,<lb />
why doesn't he lay his money<lb />
into the hands of justice and let it<lb />
ride? No matter what the star's<lb />
overhead or extensive invest-<lb />
ments, we all know he's got the<lb />
money to do it. Furthermore, our<lb />
legal system is supposed to be<lb />
the best in the world for finding<lb />
truth, deciding mercy and pre-<lb />
scribing the respective laws of<lb />
fairness. Unfortunately, this is<lb />
not always the case. (No legal<lb />
jargon pun intended.)<lb />
If we reluctantly look back<lb />
to the Rodney King incident, we<lb />
recall how an impartial 12-per-<lb />
son jury aquitted the four offic-<lb />
ers for something the entire coun-<lb />
try believed to be a clear-cut case<lb />
of police brutality and an extreme<lb />
violation of an individual's Con-<lb />
stitutional rights. Even George<lb />
Bush declared that this was<lb />
"truly a dark day in the Ameri-<lb />
can legal system, for justice<lb />
surely was not served<lb />
And we all remember the<lb />
resulting chaos and mayhem that<lb />
followed.Likewise, my own per-<lb />
sonal jury about the Mike Tyson<lb />
case is still out. As violent as this<lb />
man may have been with his<lb />
words, he was just as violent in<lb />
the ring. He was, and perhaps<lb />
will be again, a great fighter. He<lb />
now serves time for a rape he<lb />
says he did not commit and the<lb />
questions will forever go on: Why<lb />
was the girl with him for the<lb />
majority of the evening in a bar?<lb />
What was she doing in his hotel<lb />
room at 3 o'clock in the morn-<lb />
ing?<lb />
Undoubtedly, there are so<lb />
many more documented cases<lb />
throughout our legal history,<lb />
unpublicized as they maybe, that<lb />
continue to raise questions for<lb />
those closely involved. There is<lb />
hardly a week that elapses into<lb />
time that we don't see or hear a<lb />
show on TV involving a ques-<lb />
tionable decision handed down<lb />
by our courts. It is usually the<lb />
true story of this or the true story<lb />
of that, and as some way of find-<lb />
ing rights to a major network<lb />
and allow the general public to<lb />
decide vainly the Tightness or<lb />
wrongness of what has already<lb />
become a closed case. How many<lb />
different accounts did we<lb />
muddle through with the Amy<lb />
Fisher story? How many more<lb />
will we witness before the<lb />
Menendez trial is over f I believe<lb />
by the end of the year we will<lb />
watch two or three "real truths"<lb />
involving Michael Jackson.<lb />
Whether from the viewpoint of<lb />
the allegedly abused child, or the<lb />
money-hungry sister, LaToya,<lb />
these shows will be aired.<lb />
Let us suppose for a minute<lb />
that Michael Jackson had every<lb />
intention of staying the course<lb />
and pursuing every legal avenue<lb />
all the way to court. If we con-<lb />
sider all the barriers, just getting<lb />
there would be a show of ama-<lb />
teur riders in a steeplechase. The<lb />
first problem would be in find-<lb />
ing a fair, impartial jury of 12<lb />
who know very little about this<lb />
case and have not been swayed<lb />
by the multitude of media moni-<lb />
toring Jackson's every move.<lb />
Once these cave-dwellers have<lb />
been selected, the trial will be-<lb />
come a theatrical stage for the<lb />
well-paid attorneys and a de-<lb />
cision will be made based on<lb />
who can best deliver, act, per-<lb />
suade and reason with these<lb />
individuals. The courtroom<lb />
would be SRO with ticket<lb />
prices going for triple the cost<lb />
of one of Jackson's own con-<lb />
certs. For those of you who<lb />
don't carry cable, don't worry.<lb />
C-SPAN would happily oblige<lb />
by allowing a major network<lb />
full coverage, blacking out all<lb />
the best soaps.<lb />
When it's all said and<lb />
done, has the smoke really<lb />
cleared9 Perhaps we will only<lb />
be led into further confusion,<lb />
blinded by legalese loopholes,<lb />
left wondering if justice was<lb />
really served, and pondering<lb />
all those questions of, "Did<lb />
the child receive enough com-<lb />
pensation?" or "Did we send<lb />
an innocent man to prison?"<lb />
Unfortunately, many<lb />
people do not realize that an<lb />
out-of-court settlement is not<lb />
an admission of guilt. Perhaps<lb />
Michael Jackson, through ad-<lb />
vice of his counsel, of course,<lb />
had decided the hassle, the<lb />
intrusion and the publicity are<lb />
not worth the real cause of<lb />
finding truth for all the world<lb />
to see. However differing the<lb />
intentions may be, the gen-<lb />
eral public also does not real-<lb />
ize that a multi-million dollar<lb />
man writing a check for $10<lb />
mjllion is equivalent to one of<lb />
us tossing a few quarters to<lb />
the person on the street so that<lb />
he may buy a cup of coffee.<lb />
Yet the American public<lb />
is obsessed with truth. We<lb />
scream for the facts so that we<lb />
may vicariously feel more at<lb />
ease with some abstract truth<lb />
involving an icon in our own<lb />
time. And scream with obses-<lb />
sion we will. For in all its<lb />
vague ambiguity, the one clear<lb />
tact remaining is that once<lb />
again, we will be left with<lb />
never fully knowing the real<lb />
truth behind the King of Pop<lb />
Rock.<lb />
Stuff you should know<lb />
Starting Feb. 7 (and possibly lasting through Feb. 21) Cotanche Street, between 10th<lb />
and Reade, will be closed to all through traffic. This special little inconvenience is due in<lb />
thanks to ECU's brand-new kid on the block the rec center. So far this jewel has taken<lb />
parking spaces, a few dozen healthy trees and now a through street that leads to the center<lb />
of Greenville. So now where will all the coo! people drive to show off their flourescent-lit<lb />
license plates, jacked-up trucks and the very special glowing neon undersides? They can<lb />
still hang at the Hardee's <lb />
Dr. Jack Kevorkian began a petition drive yesterday to make assisted suicide legal in<lb />
Michigan. He needs more than 250,000 signatures to place a measure to amend the constitution<lb />
on the state's Novemeber ballot. Interesting to note is that in a telephone poll of 601 likely voters<lb />
statewide, the Detroit Free Press found that 58 percent of those polled supported the concept of<lb />
assisted suicide. So Kevorkian may get his wish after all<lb />
It's really not that difficult. Writing letters may not be the most exciting<lb />
thing to do, but you'd be surprised how much stuff you can get off your<lb />
chest. So in honor of that weight we call stress, sit down and pen a letter<lb />
about something that's been bothering you. All such letters may be sent<lb />
to: The Opinion Editor, The East Carolinian, Publications Bldg ECU,<lb />

Staff Writer<lb />
The Louisville Orchestra is<lb />
coming to Wright Audi torium on<lb />
Friday, Feb. 4. The orchestra has<lb />
been the leading musical resource<lb />
in Louisville, Ky. , for over 30<lb />
years.<lb />
The Orchestra performed its<lb />
first show at Memorial Audito-<lb />
rium on Nov. 8, 1937. Robert<lb />
Whitney conducted the perfor-<lb />
mance. In 1940, it started a series<lb />
of four annual programs for<lb />
school children called "Making<lb />
Music<lb />
During World War II, the fu-<lb />
ture of the orchestra was in seri-<lb />
ous question. Fortunately, in 1942,<lb />
the women's association for the<lb />
Louisville Orchestra was estab-<lb />
lished to help raise support.<lb />
In 1947 the orchestra started<lb />
a series of state-wide appearances<lb />
throughout Kentucky. At the end<lb />
of the 1947-48 season, many<lb />
achievements were accom-<lb />
plished, but a large financial debt<lb />
had been established.<lb />
In 1948, Charles P. Farnsley,<lb />
who later became the Mayor of<lb />
Louisville, met with conductor<lb />
Robert Whitney to discuss finan-<lb />
cial matters. As a result of their<lb />
meeting, they worked out a pro-<lb />
gram of commissioning works by<lb />
major composers written espe-<lb />
cially for the Louisville Orchestra.<lb />
Soon after the program was<lb />
established, the Rockefeller Foun-<lb />
dation awarded the orchestra a<lb />
$500,000 grant. With the grant the<lb />
orchestra was able toestablish First<lb />
Edition Records, its own record<lb />
label. The orchestra continues an<lb />
active recording schedule with<lb />
more than 150 discs, representing<lb />
more than 250 composers.<lb />
The orchestra also has a his-<lb />
tory of introducing music to audi-<lb />
ences of all ages through certain<lb />
educational programs, such as the<lb />
"Listen and Look" expose.<lb />
Lawrence Leighton Smith<lb />
started as the Orchestra's music<lb />
director in 1983. He has gained<lb />
international recognition through<lb />
his appearances with orchestras<lb />
in the Soviet Union, Japan and<lb />
England. During the summer of<lb />
1986, he became the first Ameri-<lb />
can to record with a Russian sym-<lb />
phony.<lb />
Tickets for the performance<lb />
are $25 for the public, $20 for ECU<lb />
faculty or staff, $12.50 for ECU<lb />
students and $12.50 for youth.<lb />

Renowned art collection on display in Raleigh<lb />
:By Bridget Hemenway<lb />
; Staff Writer<lb />
There is a saying many people<lb />
use about art: "Art is what you<lb />
make of it Many people, how-<lb />
ever, don't know what real art<lb />
looks like. Famous and impor-<lb />
tant art is very seldom seen by<lb />
those who do not travel. All of<lb />
;that is about to change because<lb />
'on Feb. 5,1994, the North Caro-<lb />
lina Museum of Art will be fea-<lb />
turing a special collection of<lb />
works for North Carolina. The<lb />
exhibition includes 54 paintings<lb />
from 16 museums across the<lb />
country and the Musee du Lou-<lb />

pieces by Titian, El Greco, Rubens,<lb />
Van Dyck, Tiepolo, Watteau,<lb />
Goya and Ingres. This is the first<lb />

Samue! H. Kress started his<lb />
life as a young school teacher.<lb />
However, after investing his sav-<lb />
ings in properties, he quickly be-<lb />

IrC1896, Samuel opened the first<lb />
SIH. Kress & Co. five-and-dime<lb />
store which, by 1906, grossed over<lb />
$3million dollars through expan-<lb />
sion. Kress, who was now very<lb />
rich and successful, began buy-<lb />
ing paintings and furnishings<lb />
from Italy and having them im-<lb />
ported to his New York City<lb />
home. After his collection began<lb />
to grow, he generously donated<lb />
paintings as gifts to museums<lb />
throughout the country. In time,<lb />
he put most of his collection on<lb />
tour throughout the U.S. and per-<lb />
sonally made sure it arrived safely<lb />
at each stop.<lb />
The Depression was a trying<lb />
time for everyone, and Samuel<lb />
Kress believed that by bringing<lb />
these works on tour, he could<lb />
provide encouragement for a<lb />
more cultured understanding of<lb />
art. His belief in the concept of<lb />
sharing his collection with the<lb />
American public caused him to<lb />
become one of the found ing bene-<lb />
factors of the new National Gal-<lb />
lery of Art in 1939. At the dedica-<lb />
tion of this greatmuseum, Samuel<lb />
Kress spoke of his works. He<lb />
stated that the exhibitions were<lb />
formed "to provide for the study<lb />
and enjoyment of the public, as a<lb />
complete representation as pos-<lb />
sible of the Italian School of paint-<lb />

said that he "endeavored to ac-<lb />

when he wonders, "How are you<lb />

Perhaps 10 years into the future,<lb />
you will be able to pull out the<lb />

the answers to these questions. But<lb />
what is this technological entity that<lb />

In a season that was slowly<lb />

"The Pirates are easily the most<lb />
athletic team in the league UNC-<lb />

the game. "We just don't have the<lb />
athletic ability that these guys do,<lb />
nor the speed<lb />
The Pirates moved their over-<lb />
all record to 11-7, and 3-4 in the<lb />
conference. The win comes after a<lb />
four-game losing skid.<lb />
"I thought that this was as<lb />
physical a basketball game that I<lb />
have seen in my three years here<lb />
coach Payne said. "It was a monu-<lb />
mental effort. I was really proud of<lb />
everybody that played<lb />
The Pirates were led by senior<lb />
guard Lester Lyons, who had 17<lb />
poin ts in the ga me, 13 of those in the<lb />
first half. The Seahawks got 22<lb />
points from junior guard Chris<lb />
Meighen, who had four 3-pointers<lb />
in the game.<lb />
The first half was plagued by<lb />
poor shooting from both teams.<lb />
ECU shot just 25 percent from the<lb />
field, while the Seahawks shot 39.<lb />
Lyons kept the Pirates in the game<lb />
the first half, hitting three 3-point-<lb />
ers.<lb />
The big momentum kick for<lb />
ECU was with 10 minutes to play in<lb />
the half, Pirate center Chuckie<lb />
Robinson drew a technical foul<lb />
on Darren Moore. The Pirates<lb />
went on an 11-point tear, taking<lb />
the lead and never looking back.<lb />
They were sparked by a Gill lay-<lb />
up and a dunk by Lyons that<lb />
brought the Minges crowd to its<lb />
feet.<lb />
"It was probably Anton Gill's<lb />
best defensive post game since he<lb />
has been here Payne said. "It's<lb />
gratifying that we can win a game<lb />
shooting 33 percent<lb />
With the Pirates up 21 -19 with<lb />
six minutes left in the first half,<lb />
ECL' forward Wilbert Hunter was<lb />
intentionally fouled on a lay-up<lb />
bv UNC-W forward Corey<lb />
Stewart. Hunter lay on the floor<lb />
for about two minutes before he<lb />
was helped off of the court, miss-<lb />
ing the remainder of the half.<lb />
Lyons hit a 3-pointer with a<lb />
minute left that would give the<lb />
Pirates the lead at halftime, 27-24.<lb />
Point guard Kareem<lb />
Richardson scored nine of his 11<lb />
points in the second naif. Using<lb />
hisspeed to push the ball upcourt<lb />

ECU jumped out to its big-<lb />

Cowboys' Johnson may<lb />
be heading to Florida<lb />
(AP) In the exhilaration of<lb />
the moment, the final seconds of a<lb />
second straight Super Bowl<lb />
championship, Dallas Cowboys<lb />
coach Jimmy Johnson and owner<lb />
Jerry Jones put aside their differ-<lb />
ences and hugged each other<lb />
warmly.<lb />
Their caustic relationship is<lb />
heading toward a breakup for the<lb />
worst of reasons: Their egos are<lb />
getting in the way of their success.<lb />
They've been sugar-coating the<lb />
tension between them for a while<lb />
now, pretending in public there is<lb />
no serious trouble in private, acting<lb />
like a married couple who don't<lb />
want everyone to know they're in<lb />
the throes of divorce. It's easy to see<lb />
through that frosty veneer.<lb />
But at the end of the Cowboys'<lb />
30-13 victory Sunday over Buffalo,<lb />
Johnson and Jones shared one more<lb />
triumph that could keep them<lb />
together a little longer.<lb />
"I don't worry at all that we<lb />
will be losing Jimmy Jones said.<lb />
"We have a great opportunity to do<lb />
something that has never been<lb />
done, and that's to win three<lb />
straight Super Bowls. 1 know that<lb />
Jimmy enjoys the challenges, and 1<lb />
know that he will be here<lb />
Johnson wasn't so sure. He<lb />
hasn't decided on anything, he said,<lb />
though he imagined he would<lb />
return to Dallas next year. And he<lb />
hardly gushed over the hug with<lb />
Jones.<lb />
"He owns the team Johnson<lb />
said coolly. "He hired me, so he<lb />
deserved a hug<lb />
No one is sure when the split<lb />
will come. Not even Johnson or<lb />
Jones. They may gnash their teeth<lb />
and stick together for one or two<lb />
more runs at the Super Bowl.<lb />
Or they could take separate<lb />
paths starting tomorrow. Either<lb />
way, there's almost no chance<lb />
Johnson will stay in Dallas for the<lb />
next five years of his 10-year<lb />
contract<lb />
Johnson's next stop could be<lb />
the Miami Dolphins, should Don<lb />
Shula retire, or it could be the<lb />
expansion Jacksonville Jaguars, if<lb />
the right offer is made. Johnson has<lb />
never worked anywhere longer<lb />
than five vears, and he lusts for new<lb />
challenges. His heart is in Miami.<lb />
Thirty years ago, Johnson and<lb />
Jones were roommates on Arkan-<lb />
sas' national championship team,<lb />
smart and ambitious buddies<lb />
pointed toward great things.<lb />
Johnson says he's never met anyone<lb />
better at making money than Jones.<lb />
Jones says he's never known a<lb />
coach who can build a winner like<lb />
Johnson.<lb />
They seem a perfect match,<lb />
riding high after two straight Super<lb />
Bowls. But when titanic egos dash<lb />
sparks turn to thunderbolts. And if<lb />
Jones tries to enforce his threat not<lb />
to let Johnson go to another team<lb />
under any circumstances, folks<lb />
around them would line up for a<lb />
ringside seat to see that brawl.<lb />
As the rumors swirl that<lb />
Johnson wants out, Jones remains<lb />
adamant about keeping him on a<lb />
tight leash<lb />
"There is no equivocation in the<lb />

Lady hoopsters blown out by Dukes<lb />
(SID) Four James Madison<lb />
players scored in double figures as<lb />
JMU captured its fourth Colonial<lb />
Athletic Association win with a<lb />
79-55 road victory over East Caro-<lb />
lina in Greenville on Sunday.<lb />
Led by Krissy Heinbaugh,<lb />
who scored a game-high 19 points,<lb />
the Dukes controlled the game<lb />
from the start.<lb />
After scoring first with two<lb />
Heinbaugh free throws at 18:46,<lb />
and then taking the lead with a 17-<lb />
foot jumper by Danielle Powell at<lb />
18:06, JMU never looked back and<lb />
led 39-20 at the half. Heinbaugh<lb />
led the way with 10 points in the<lb />
first half.<lb />
ECU struggled, shooting 29.6<lb />
percent horn the floor and just 50<lb />
percent from the line during the<lb />
first half and dropping to 25 per-<lb />
cent from the floor in the second<lb />
half.<lb />
James Madison shot 51.7 per-<lb />
cent horn the floor for the game<lb />
and 73.7 percent from the line.<lb />
JMU also controlled the<lb />
boards, out-rebounding the Lady<lb />
Pirates 27-10 in the first half and<lb />
allowing ECU only four offensive<lb />
rebounds. For the game, the Dukes<lb />
had 54 rebounds to ECU's 33.<lb />
JMU's Sarah Schrieb led all<lb />
reboundcrs with 10.<lb />
During the second half, JMU<lb />
extended its lead to as much as 31<lb />
points with four minutes remain-<lb />
ing. A layup by Heinbaugh at the<lb />
4:05 mark gave JMU its largest<lb />
lead of the game (72-41). Kara<lb />
Ratliff (17 points), Schreib (12<lb />
points) and Powell (11 points)<lb />
joined Heinbaugh in scoring<lb />
double figures for JMU.<lb />
ECU placed just one player in<lb />
double figures with Tomekia<lb />
Blackmon scoring 12 points. Shay<lb />
Hayes led ECU's rebounding ef-<lb />
fort with seven.<lb />
With the win, the Dukes went<lb />
to 10-8 on the season and 4-2 in<lb />
CAA plav. East Carolina, with its<lb />
fifth straight loss, dropped to 2-13<lb />
on the season and 1-5 in the CAA.<lb />

Smith gets contract extension<lb />
Technical fouls: none Officials Ch.inlv<lb />

(AP)The University of North<lb />
Carolina at Chapel Hill has reaf-<lb />
firmed its love affair with basket-<lb />
ball coach Dean Smith.<lb />
The UNC board of trustees<lb />
amended Smith's contract Friday<lb />
to allow him to lead the team into<lb />
the 21st century.<lb />
The contract revision calls for<lb />
Smith to remain as head coach<lb />
through June 30,2001. Smith, who<lb />
was named head coach at the start<lb />
of the 1961-1962 season, will be 70<lb />
in 2001.<lb />
"You (media)guysdidn't think<lb />
we were going to let that guy get<lb />
away, did you?" board member<lb />
John Harris said after the meeting.<lb />
Smith said he considered the<lb />
revised contract as a clarification,<lb />
rather than an extension.<lb />
Smith signed a contract in 1981<lb />
to remain head coach until June 30,<lb />
1996, at which time he would be<lb />
allowed to serve in another posi-<lb />
tion at the school until June 30,<lb />
2001. Smith said he understood that<lb />
the original contract was meant to<lb />
run through 2001. One page had<lb />
that date, while another page had a<lb />
conflicting date of 1996, he said.<lb />
Smith said he first noticed the<lb />
error in the mid-1980s, but did not<lb />
act. UNC athletic director John<lb />
Swofford noticed the conflict last<lb />
summer and asked the board to<lb />
amend the contract to run through<lb />
2001, Smith said.<lb />
"Thatdoesn't mean I will coach<lb />
until then said Smith, who has the<lb />
option to terminate the contract at<lb />
any time with 120 days' notice.<lb />

The book by Terry Phelps, wife<lb />

Mrs. Phelps, a law professor at<lb />

They talked about how being mar-<lb />

It wasn't all glamor and glory,<lb />
Phelps said.<lb />
"Fans always say 'Do you get<lb />

"Most of us say 'Ugh' and you<lb />

because you want to be supportive.<lb />
You've got to be there. You can't<lb />

State prosecutor<lb />
probes skier's death<lb />
(AP) Was Ulrike Maier's<lb />
death on the Garmisch ski slope<lb />
simply a tragic accident that could<lb />
have happened anywhere?<lb />
Or is her policeman boy-<lb />
friend entitled to sue the race or-<lb />
ganizers because the course was<lb />
too dangerous?<lb />
Opinion appearsdivided fol-<lb />
lowing Saturday's accident that<lb />
stunned the world of skiing only<lb />
two weeks before the Winter<lb />
Olympics are due to start.<lb />
Maier, 26, the mother of a 4-<lb />
year-old girl, broke her neck in a<lb />
terrifying crash in Saturday's<lb />
downhill race and died 2 12<lb />
hours later.<lb />
The state prosecutor opened<lb />
a routine probe Sunday into<lb />
Maier's death and examined the<lb />
scene of the crash. It's believed<lb />
Maier, a two-time world cham-<lb />
pion, slid off line and collided<lb />
with a timing post, causing her<lb />
helmet to come off.<lb />
Helmut Schweighofer,<lb />
Maier's boyfriend and the father<lb />
of Melanie, also visited the spot<lb />
and broke into tears.<lb />
He strongly criticized FIS, the<lb />
international ski federation, and<lb />
World Cup officials for what he<lb />
said were insufficient safety mea-<lb />
sures and indicated the family is<lb />
planning to sue for damages<lb />
It won't bring Ulli back, but<lb />
I intend to fight FIS he said. "It<lb />
may save another life.<lb />
"They only talk about im-<lb />
proving safety, but they never do<lb />
anything. I can't understand that<lb />
the timing post was padded only<lb />
with straw.<lb />
"Somebody will die again<lb />
next year unless they really do<lb />
something he said.<lb />
Other competitors, including<lb />
American skier Krista<lb />
Schmidinger, criticized the track.<lb />
"It was like sheer ice, like<lb />
trying to survive your way<lb />
down she said. "The conditions<lb />
on the hill were poor. It was a<lb />
really inconsistent track, a sheet<lb />
of ice in some sections and soft in<lb />
others. The whole race was very<lb />
unfair<lb />
But race officials and several<lb />
coaches said it was safe.<lb />
"It could have happened at<lb />
50-60 spots on any downhill in<lb />
the world said Hubert Ostler,<lb />
head of the organizing commit-<lb />
tee.<lb />
Chief race referee Kurt Hoch<lb />
said the timing device was pad-<lb />
ded with straw-filled sacks, about<lb />
