ECU's expansion from a<lb />
teacher's college to the third larg-<lb />
est campus in the state of North<lb />
Carolina was a result of the active<lb />
leadership of ECU's fifth presi-<lb />
dent, John D. Messick.<lb />
Dr. Messick's impressive<lb />
and productive presidency<lb />
stretched over a 12-year period,<lb />
from 1947 up until his retirement<lb />
in 1959.<lb />
Messick spent his retirement<lb />
years in Wilmington, where he<lb />
died on Oct. 3 at the age of 95.<lb />
"During his presidency, East<lb />
Carolina really began its amazing<lb />
growth pattern Dr. Mary Jo<lb />
Bratton, ECU Historian and au-<lb />
thor of East Carolina University:<lb />
The Formatwe Years, said.<lb />
Under Dr. Messick, ECU<lb />
became coeducational and ex-<lb />
panded in student enrollment,<lb />
curriculum and faculty strength.<lb />
Also, during Messick's<lb />
presidency. ECU acquired ten new<lb />
major buildings, modified eight<lb />
existing structures and purchased<lb />
eighty acres of land. There was an<lb />
increase in degree programs, ex-<lb />
pansion of service functions and<lb />
legislative approval for the estab-<lb />
lishment of a nursing school.<lb />
Messick was a native of<lb />
South Creek, near Aurora, in Beau-<lb />
fort County. He pursued his col-<lb />
lege education at Kings Business<lb />
College and Elon College.<lb />
Before beginning his presi-<lb />
dency at East Carolina, he worked<lb />
as an educator in NorthCarolina's<lb />
public schools and at the same<lb />
time attended graduate schools<lb />
during the summer. Messick re-<lb />
ceived his Ph.D in administration<lb />
and supervision in 1934 fromNew<lb />
York University.<lb />
After his retirement in 1959,<lb />
Messick continued to visit ECU<lb />
and was present in 1983 for the<lb />
dedication ceremony of the the-<lb />
ater arts building, which now car-<lb />
ries his name.<lb />
"Dr. Messick was a very<lb />
ambitious and energetic person<lb />

in the state legislature to get the<lb />
funding and the support that was<lb />
required to convert it East Caro-<lb />

Feeling confused? Discover possible pathways to your future!<lb />

Staff Writer<lb />
Are you completely<lb />
clueless? Do you know what you<lb />
want to be when you grow up?<lb />
Are you considering ever grow-<lb />
ing up? Well, ECU is prepared to<lb />
handle dilemmas such as these.<lb />
ECU will host its annual<lb />
Majors Minors Fair on Wednes-<lb />
day, Nov. 3, from 12:30p.m. until<lb />
3:30 p.m. Located in the<lb />
Mendenhall Great Room, the fair<lb />
provides teachers and students<lb />
with a chance to ask questions<lb />
that students may have about<lb />
choosing a major and the career<lb />
opportunities within the major.<lb />
Over 45 different depart-<lb />
ments from the school will be at-<lb />
tending, plus co-op, counseling and<lb />
career services. The MajorsMi-<lb />
nors Fair also develops the thought<lb />
of different options that may not<lb />
have occurred to the students. For<lb />
example, the fair allows students<lb />
to choose a minor that corresponds<lb />
with their major or introduces them<lb />
to different departments that are<lb />
not as well known as others, such<lb />
as Human and Environmental Sci-<lb />
ences, Leisure Systems, Hospital-<lb />
ity Management and many more.<lb />
Jim Pinkney, a member of the<lb />
Career Education Committee, be-<lb />
lieves that the fair is a valuable<lb />
experience because students can<lb />
talk to other students who have<lb />
already been accepted by a spe-<lb />
cific department. "The informal<lb />
atmosphere and handou ts for the<lb />
students to take and read about<lb />
the different programs within<lb />
the university help them be more<lb />
relaxed about choosing a ma-<lb />
jor Pinkney said. "All of these<lb />
factors give the students the<lb />
comfortability of learning about<lb />
areas in which they are inter-<lb />
ested<lb />
Anyone who has not de-<lb />
cided on a major or minor, or has<lb />
questions concerning their col-<lb />
lege career, should visit the Ma-<lb />

Halloween's success<lb />
By Jennifer Jenkins<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Halloween hit Greenville<lb />
Saturday night with a flow of<lb />
wildly-dressed individuals pour-<lb />
ing into the streets downtown,<lb />
yelling and screaming but, over-<lb />
all, not causing too many prob-<lb />
lems.<lb />
"Based on prior Halloweens<lb />
and their problems, this year's<lb />
Halloween went exceptionally<lb />
well stated Captain John E. Ennis<lb />
of Greenville Police Department.<lb />
This year, Halloween was an av-<lb />
erage weekend with the excep-<lb />
tion of the number of people and<lb />
the way they were dressed.<lb />
Working together to make<lb />
the weekend a success were the<lb />
City of Greenville, ECU's Stu-<lb />
dentGovernment Association, the<lb />
downtown area restaurants and<lb />
taverns, Inter-Fraternity Council<lb />
and the ECU administration.<lb />
There were over 100 officers on<lb />
duty throughout the weekend to<lb />
provide a safe environment for<lb />
the students. This success was<lb />
achieved through cooperation of<lb />
the students and their decision to<lb />
celebrate safely.<lb />
Lt. Keith Knox, of the ECU<lb />
Police Department "felt that the<lb />
weather pla"yed a major part in<lb />
the calmness of the weekend. The<lb />
rain kept some of the people in the<lb />
restaurants and taverns. And, it<lb />
kept some people at home. Nev-<lb />
ertheless, there was still an abun-<lb />
dance of people on the streets<lb />
EastCarolina'sSGAhad five<lb />
teams of student safety officers<lb />
stationed in the downtown area<lb />
to help control the crowd. Head<lb />
of the legislative committee, Brynn<lb />
Thomas, "felt that the weekend<lb />
could not have worked out any<lb />
better Thomas stated that more<lb />
people were inside the clubs than<lb />
in the streets which worked to<lb />
their advantage, because then the<lb />
people were not their responsibil-<lb />
ity. The weekend's goals were<lb />
accomplished because the stu-<lb />
dents had fun, the restaurants<lb />
and taverns made money and<lb />
the City of Greenville ensured<lb />
the safety of the town.<lb />
Each Halloween is becom-<lb />
ing more of a success because of<lb />
the working cooperation of the<lb />
students. Students are starting<lb />
to think while they are down-<lb />
town and choose other alterna-<lb />
tives to going downtown to cel-<lb />
ebrate. Over 2,000 students at-<lb />
tended "Midnight Madness" in<lb />
Mendenhall, which was quite<lb />
an increase in attendance from<lb />
last year.<lb />
The success of this year's<lb />
Halloween was reflected in the<lb />
decrease in crime on and off<lb />
campus, which has posed a<lb />
threat before. Prior to last year,<lb />
downtown Greenville re-<lb />
mained closed for Halloween<lb />
because of past violence and<lb />
vandalism.<lb />
Real blood, violence, fear<lb />
overshadow Halloween<lb />
(AP) Real fear edged out the<lb />
store-bought variety in some cities<lb />
this Halloween.<lb />
In Los Angeles, gunmen<lb />
howling "trick or treat" fired into a<lb />
church Sunday night, injuring a<lb />
woman standing at the altar, police<lb />
said.<lb />
"Many people started crying<lb />

The victim, 47-year-old Maria<lb />
de Jesus Garcia, was in serious con-<lb />

wound, police Lt. Earl Paysinger<lb />
said.<lb />
In Fullerton, Calif two 9-<lb />
year-old girls out trick-or-treating<lb />
were struck and killed by a pizza<lb />
delivery van Sunday evening.<lb />
The cousins were just a block<lb />
from home when they were hit,<lb />
police Sgt. Neal Baldwin said.<lb />
The accident was under in-<lb />

were not immediately released<lb />
pending notification of relatives.<lb />

In Denver, a teen-ager escort-<lb />

Carl Banks, 18, was in critical<lb />
condition early today at Denver<lb />
General Hospital, a nursing super-<lb />
visor said. He was declared brain-<lb />
dead two hours after the Sunday<lb />
evening shooting. Police said they<lb />
had no motive in the attack.<lb />
In Massachusetts, wary<lb />
parents in two communities kept<lb />
costumed children on a short<lb />
leashif they let them out at all.<lb />
In Sturbridge, where 10-<lb />
year-old Holly Piirainen was kid-<lb />

In't worry much about being a crime<lb />
victim until (an. 17, 1988. I hat was the date the University of<lb />
(ieorgia sophomore was stabbed in the chest as she la in bed in an<lb />
offompus apartment. In the early morning hours, a man in a ski<lb />
mask and gloves slipped in through a sliding glass door and crept<lb />
past sleeping roommates in the apartment. Getzinger woke up with<lb />
a pillow over her face. She fought off her attacker and felt a sudden<lb />
pain in her chest. She thought the man had punched her, but the<lb />
blow turned out to be a knife that pierced her aorta and li er.<lb />
Thanks to several lucky circumstances an ambulance was in the<lb />
area and a cardiovascular surgeon was on-duty at the hospital <lb />
Getzinger was on the operating table in 16 minutes, and lived to tell<lb />
her story.<lb />
She later discovered there was no way students and parents<lb />
could make an informed decision about the safety of a particular<lb />
college, on or off campus, because no one was keeping statistics on<lb />
crimes involving students. After undergoing two heart operations,<lb />
Getzinger decided to do something about the situation. She founded<lb />
Safe Campuses Now, which influenced Georgia and Tennessee<lb />
legislators to pass laws that require police agencies to note in crime<lb />
reports whether a student was involved in a crime. This enables<lb />
groups such as Safe Campuses Now to track crimes against stu-<lb />
dents both on and off campus. So far, those are the only ones in the<lb />
nation where such statistics are being recorded.<lb />
In most states, "the schools have absolutely no responsibility,<lb />
except a moral one, to make students aware of crime that occurs off<lb />
campus, and that's where most students live Getzinger said.<lb />
"There's a false sense of security among students. They think<lb />
they're living in a safe haven No national agency keeps track of<lb />
crimes against students off campus, and the result is that colleges<lb />
can report that no rapes occurred on campus in 1992, when in fact,<lb />
four to five rapes might have occurred just a few blocks from<lb />
campus.<lb />
"Most college students live off campus, they party off cam-<lb />
pus, and most crime occurs off campus said Nancy Zechella,<lb />

Packwood diaries unlock controversy <lb />
It's another witchhunt, folks.<lb />
The Senate Ethics Committee is at it again.<lb />
Although few issues have caused more dis-<lb />
comfort than the subpoena for Sen. Bob<lb />
Packwood's diaries, the outcome of this de-<lb />
bate could really create problems if not handled<lb />
correctly.<lb />
The subpeona asks for Packwood's dia-<lb />
ries from Jan. 1,1989 to the present. The com-<lb />
mittee staff, with Packwood's cooperation, al-<lb />
ready has reviewed the prior 20 years of the<lb />
Republican's diaries.<lb />
Senator Packwood has been accused by<lb />
more than two dozen women of making un-<lb />
wanted sexual advances and some of the<lb />
women contend that there were attempts to<lb />
keep them quiet through threats to publicly<lb />
disclose aspects of their personal lives.<lb />
Packwood's accommodation ended when<lb />
committee staffers discovered potential crimi-<lb />
nal conduct by the senator that was outside the<lb />
original allegations of alleged sexual miscon-<lb />
duct and intimidation of witnesses. It was then<lb />
that the senator's lawyers refused to copy the<lb />
portions involving potential criminal viola-<lb />
tions. Packwood has stated that he will pro-<lb />
vide the committee only with portions directly<lb />
related to the original ethics charges.<lb />
And the air on the Senate floor stank of<lb />
the violation of someone's constitutional right<lb />
to privacy<lb />
Indeed, this issue brings about an inter-<lb />
esting debate: should a Seaietthjcs.Commit-<lb />
tee have the unalienable figrft to a public<lb />
official's private diaries simply because she is<lb />
a public official? Or are these protected under<lb />
the Constitution's right to privacy? Obviously<lb />
special favoring cannot be placed on senators,<lb />
but neither can the Committee be so bold as to<lb />
proclaim that it is Packwood's duty to hand<lb />
over diaries that otherwise would remain pri-<lb />
vate.<lb />
To be quite honest, Oregon's Sen.<lb />
Packwood could be the biggest sleazeball of all<lb />
time, committing numerous criminal acts, but<lb />
the Senate Ethics Committee still would have no<lb />
right to subpoena his diaries. Think of it this<lb />
way: Would you want someone pawing over<lb />
your diary, all the while legitimizing it by call-<lb />
ing on the rights of every American to know<lb />
your personal affairs? Besides, people pad their<lb />
diaries all the time; who knows whether it's fact<lb />
or fiction?<lb />
In this case, not only is the reputation of<lb />
Packwood on the line, but the reputations and<lb />
privacy of everyone in the diaries this is<lb />
where the witch hunt begins. For it certainly is<lb />
no secret that politicians are fodder for the<lb />
masses. Anyone and everyone loves a scandal,<lb />
especially a political one.<lb />
Now, it must be taken into consideration<lb />
that the original committee probe was specifi-<lb />
cally intended to reveal clues into the allega-<lb />
tions of alleged sexual misconduct and intimi-<lb />
dation of witnesses. With the unearthing of<lb />
information concerning possible criminal acts,<lb />
the committee licks its collective chops and hun-<lb />
grily awaits the feast.<lb />
But the feast must be postponed the<lb />
main course and his entourage began negotia-<lb />
tions aiming at striking a compromise for<lb />
Packwood to turn over only portions of his writ-<lb />
ings. No compromise has yet been met. Hope-<lb />
fully that Constitution that the senators hold so<lb />
dear will stand its ground.<lb />
Sit tight.<lb />

Our political leaders were not<lb />

Nevertheless, the government will<lb />

paying lip service to those in Los<lb />

outcome of die Denny case, but not<lb />
unhappy enough to riot.<lb />
There was no need for our<lb />

Nor was there a need for them to<lb />

These are the messages being<lb />
sent by the jurors in the Reginald<lb />

Damian Williams faces a maximum<lb />

what that means? He might serve<lb />

Ithasbeenapparent for years<lb />

The scales of justice are tilted with<lb />

from that realm. But hey, folks,<lb />
this is big news here, and there<lb />
may even be a controversy you<lb />
can sink your teeth into. Inter-<lb />
ested? Read on.<lb />
Cloning, for those of you<lb />
who shy away from the biological<lb />
stint, is the medical art of taking<lb />
genetic material from a human, in<lb />
this case a human embryo, sepa-<lb />
rating it into its component cells<lb />
Halloween (at least in my neigh- (ouch!) and treating them. The end<lb />
cloning efforts, or<lb />
any geneticmedical<lb />
experimentation,<lb />
must be properly<lb />
supervised and acces-<lb />
sible to the public<lb />
eye.<lb />
borhood)<lb />
that not one<lb />
kid showed<lb />
up at my<lb />
door. I<lb />
imagine<lb />
children re-<lb />
mained in-<lb />
doors in-<lb />
stead,<lb />
huddled in<lb />
their cos-<lb />
tume on the bathroom floor, too<lb />
terrified to step out for fear of<lb />
offending some fanatic who'd<lb />
either shoot them or run a full<lb />
page ad in the local paper,<lb />
preaching blasphemy and de-<lb />
manding financial restitution.<lb />
Consequently, I'm stranded with<lb />
these huge bags of acne-inspir-<lb />
ing candy, untouched by<lb />
youngster's hands, and no real<lb />
desire to eat it. And I just wanted<lb />
to say thanks.<lb />
But seriously. Has any-<lb />
one been keeping up with the<lb />
latest in the realm of science? It<lb />
seems scientists from George<lb />
Washington University have<lb />
successfully concocted a method<lb />
result is multi-<lb />
embryos, each a<lb />
replica of the<lb />
original. Al-<lb />
lowed to de-<lb />
velop, they<lb />
would grow<lb />
into identical<lb />
copies of the<lb />
same person.<lb />
(Talk about<lb />
"m1 overexposure!)<lb />
That was, of course, the<lb />
Cliff Note's version of how it's<lb />
done; I don't claim to understand<lb />
the intricacies of genetic engineer-<lb />
ing. What I do know is, this is<lb />
quite a feat in the field of science<lb />
and another step towards under-<lb />
standing those fundamental ge-<lb />
netic blueprints of life we fondly<lb />
call deoxyribonucleic acid. It's also<lb />
the beginning of a moral dilemma.<lb />
(But then, what isn't these days?)<lb />
When news of the break-<lb />
through became public, the reac-<lb />
tions were swift and intense. Ac-<lb />
cording to the polls taken this past<lb />
week, three out of four Americans<lb />
were opposed to cloning, and 46<lb />
percent are in favor of banning it<lb />
tocloneahumanbeing. I'msure altogether. Seems that a majority<lb />
to most of you that sounds like of the public are concerned with<lb />
something right out of "Star scientists, and humankind for that<lb />
Trek and is therefore not worth matter, dabbling in affairs that may<lb />
listening to. Heaven forbid we be considered sacred and forbid-<lb />
den. As most people believe in<lb />
some supernatural presence re-<lb />
sponsible for our being, a sort of<lb />
for-God's-eyes-only deal, manu-<lb />
factured life justdoesn'thold well<lb />
at all.<lb />
Now I can see why hav-<lb />
ing a duplicate of yourself could<lb />
be a hassle. Everyone getting your<lb />
name wrong, photo ID mix-up,<lb />
your twin stealing your dates. I'm<lb />
sure it must be a living hell when<lb />
attending the family reunions. But,<lb />
somehow, I can't accept scientists<lb />
investing enormous amounts of<lb />
time and funds into isolating ge-<lb />
netic material, replicating it and<lb />
nurturing a new life for the sake of<lb />
a parlor trick! I mean, they aren't<lb />
just cloning around here.<lb />
For God's sake, people,<lb />
get off your bitch box and quit<lb />
whining. This isn't the medieval<lb />
ages, and the thought of a Fran-<lb />
kenstein complex is insane. I see<lb />
cloning as a step, not an end. Think<lb />
of it. What if we could perfect the<lb />
process to where we only clone<lb />
organs and limbs of patients who<lb />
have lost the original and have<lb />
been rendered handicapped. With<lb />
the knowledge we would gain,<lb />
we could learn to weed out hun-<lb />
dreds of the genetic diseases that<lb />
plague us all.<lb />
Yes, trying to bring back<lb />
dead dinosaurs may be too much<lb />
(thank yc i Mr. Spielberg). I agree<lb />
that clonL ig efforts, or any genetic<lb />
medical experimentation, must be<lb />
properly supervised and acces-<lb />
sible to the public eye. We cer-<lb />
tainly don't need scientists to get<lb />
carried away and do something<lb />
foolish, like clone Rush Limb' - jh,<lb />
or worse, Dan Cortese. But to ban<lb />
these efforts outright would be<lb />
denying us a science that could<lb />
benefit all humankind.<lb />

On December 6, the ECU basketball team opens its<lb />
homeseasonagairBtCampbellUniversity.Thosefolkswill<lb />
be gunning for a win against our Pirates.<lb />
This basketball game is the first d .ance for the stu-<lb />

Greenville.<lb />
Very few of us were in Richmond and Winston-<lb />
SalemlastMarch when EddiePayne displayed thecoach-<lb />
ing ability mat led to his hiring two and a half years ago.<lb />
There is time for the administration to secure a<lb />
"packed" Minges Colesium on December 6. The effort to<lb />
do so must start now. This is to be the last season in the<lb />
Minges that we know and love. With proper leadership<lb />
from the administration, these games this year could be<lb />
sold out and filled each and every night. The team is going<lb />
to be the most competitive it has been in years.<lb />
Thestudentbody mustbechallenged likeithasbeen<lb />
challenged for certain football games. The students must<lb />
respond. It will be mis basketball season that will go a long<lb />
way towards our being considered for conference affilia-<lb />
tion for football Sounds strange, but true.<lb />
Thecheerleadersmusttakeitupon themselves to-<lb />
assure three to four thousand students come to every<lb />
home game. They must be allowed to make the atmd<lb />
sphere one of fun and craziness all wrapped into one.<lb />
This will require extra incentives to be done each night<lb />
with students and others.<lb />
These home games serve as "recruiting week-<lb />
ends" for the football team. If a party atmosphere is;<lb />
shown in Minges who knows, certam recruits thatmayl<lb />
enjoy basketbal will sign with Coach Logan that<lb />
maybe would sign in the triangle where basketball isl<lb />
established as a fun event<lb />

make basketball as fun as football. Go Pirates!<lb />

The University has abrogated its responsibility to<lb />

wake of recent attacks, I'm appalled that the only recom-<lb />
mendation to increase public safety is to walk in groups of<lb />
three or more. Will this really prevent crime? Doesn't it<lb />
merely promote vigilantism? If I get a big enough gang,<lb />
then we can walk the campus at will and feel safe. True,<lb />
there is stength in numbers, but this ignores the cause of<lb />
the trouble. Whatprevents those whoarecommittingthe<lb />
crime from roaming campus in ever increasingly larger<lb />
numbers?<lb />
What are the campus and local police doing? What<lb />
action is the Chancellor taking? Give us something more<lb />
than a in loco parents benediction, "Be careful tonight,<lb />
dear. Don't walk alone This is simply unrealistic. A<lb />
student's schedule is unpredictable; it is probably more<lb />
difficult to find two other people with the same study<lb />
habits than itis to meeta compatiblespouse. In theabsence<lb />
of action and leadership from those in authority, we, the<lb />
students, will be forced to divert time and effort from<lb />
studies and the process of growing up to protect our-<lb />
selves.<lb />
As an expert marksman capable of handling a<lb />

Should weformourown "Guardian Angels" chapterto<lb />

These are drastic steps that would impinge on<lb />
personal freedoms. Nevertheless, are not our freedoms<lb />

In an be-<lb />

it's nice to know that there are orga-<lb />

Greenville's New Garden of<lb />
Eden is one such organization. It<lb />
wasfounded b Hollis Lilley, a<lb />
former ECU student. The New Gar-<lb />
den of Eden has taken as one of its<lb />
goals to involve as many people as<lb />
possible in the fight to preserve the<lb />
natural state of the enviroment.<lb />
Lilley says that the battle has been<lb />
compounded by politics and igno-<lb />
rance, but that now is the time for<lb />
change.<lb />
Whereas many environmental<lb />
organizations tend to focus on par-<lb />
ticular species, Lillev would like to<lb />
cover all aspects of the issue. A lofty<lb />
goal, you might say, but Lillev in-<lb />

Lilley commented that such<lb />
things have damaged the natural<lb />
landscape and its inhabitants, and<lb />
he fears that the same will continue<lb />
to occur if people don't begin to<lb />
address such problems.<lb />
The New Garden of Eden's ani-<lb />

consists mainly of domestic spe-<lb />

the organization's success, however,<lb />

has 40members, both hearing and<lb />

Oneof its most exciting activities<lb />

Last year the fraternity wrote a<lb />
play to address the issues faced by<lb />
deaf people in a hearing world. One<lb />
year Fantasy hosted a special Christ-<lb />
mas play. In the past, Fantasy did an<lb />
adaptation of the movie. Grease. The<lb />
group also performs for manv public<lb />
schools in the area. This year's play is<lb />
not only for deaf people, but also for<lb />
those interested insign language and<lb />
anyone who likes new experiences.<lb />
With the aid of an interpreter, I<lb />
had the opportunity to talk with Pat<lb />
Stiviand and Bryan Kennedy about<lb />
the play.<lb />
The story is about a deaf prince<lb />
who lives in a town where all of the<lb />
residents are deaf. Because of his ar-<lb />
rogance, he gets cursed and turns<lb />
into a beast. He also becomes able to<lb />
hear.<lb />
Some of the castle workers be-<lb />
come deaf, and others retain their<lb />
ability to hear, though they never<lb />
sign in front of the beast. The beast<lb />
does not have the ability to sign so he<lb />
can no longer communicate with the<lb />

Many of the animals that are<lb />
currently housed in the<lb />

bird population. Residents include<lb />
ducks, white and Indian blue pea-<lb />

Some of the refuge's most prized<lb />
possessions, and its only wild spe-<lb />

which Lilley said are rare birds.<lb />
You can become a member of<lb />
The New Garden of Eden for an<lb />
annual cost of S25 to $30. You'll<lb />

other information regarding impor-<lb />

scene, plus the satisfaction of know-<lb />

assist the survival and expansion of<lb />
plant and animal populations.<lb />
Lilley said that he realizes the<lb />
extremes that some organizations<lb />
can reach when trving to drum up<lb />
support, and that the New Garden<lb />
of Edena non-profit outfitfries<lb />
tostay away from tactics that would<lb />
alienate its patrons and harm its<lb />
animals and plants.The<lb />
organization's intent, for example,<lb />
is not to raise animals merely for the<lb />
sake of preservation in captivity.<lb />
Rather, Lilley would like to heip<lb />
certain populations to succeed on<lb />
their own in their own natural envi-<lb />
ronments.<lb />
He said that he understands<lb />
the problems with trying to solicit<lb />
support through such mediums as<lb />
the mail, and hehopes that people's<lb />
interest in environmental issues will<lb />
be strong enough to make them<lb />
want to join the cause.<lb />

Actor DeNiro tries<lb />
hand at directing<lb />
By Ike Shibley<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Robert DeNiro has been re-<lb />
garded as a magnificent actor for<lb />
almost 20 years. His chameleon<lb />
like ability to become the charac-<lb />
ter he plays has won him rave<lb />
reviews and garnered him an<lb />
Academy Award for his memo-<lb />
rable performance as Jake LaMotta<lb />
inRagingBull. Now DeNiro wants<lb />
to expand his horizons and move<lb />
behind the camera as well as in<lb />
front of it.<lb />
DeNiro's debut directorial ef-<lb />
fort , A Bronx Tale, the tale is one of<lb />
a young boy growing up in a<lb />
neighborhood run by a gangster.<lb />
A Bronx Tale opens and closes<lb />
with a monologue by the main<lb />
character, Cologero Anello (a role<lb />
filled by two different actors:<lb />
Francis Capra plays the nine-year-<lb />
old Cologero, and Lillo Brancato<lb />
plays the 17-year-old boy).<lb />
Cologero, later nicknamed<lb />
"C becomes fascinated by the<lb />
local mob kingpin, Sonnv (Chazz<lb />
Palminteri). He watches his every<lb />
move, knows all the members in<lb />
his gang and intently studies his<lb />
mannerisms. Cologero, for ex-<lb />
ample, notes that Sonny has five<lb />
fingers but that he only uses<lb />
threethe thumb, forefinger and<lb />
pinkiein a suave hand motion<lb />
that accentuates all that he says.<lb />
The one interesting feature of<lb />
this film, and the one that sepa-<lb />
rates it from so many other gang-<lb />
ster films, is that Cologero has a<lb />
family that cares for him. The<lb />
most interesting character in A<lb />
Bronx Tale is Cologero's father,<lb />
Lorenzo (Robert DeNiro).<lb />
Lorenzo drives a bus seven<lb />
days a week and proudly tells his<lb />
son the benefits of being an hon-<lb />
est, hard-working American.<lb />
Lorenzo refuses to drop off num-<lb />
bers for Sonny while on his bus<lb />
route even though it would mean<lb />
a lot of money for his family.<lb />
Lorenzo's virtues radiate across<lb />
the screen. They become so righ-<lb />
teous, though, that they threaten<lb />
to sink the character in a sea of<lb />
political correctness.<lb />
Lorenzo, thankfully, appears<lb />
much more human, because the<lb />
script allows the audience to see<lb />
othersidesof him. When Cologero<lb />
talks about dating a Afican-Ameri-<lb />
can girl, Lorenzo tells him that he<lb />
never will because he would not<lb />
dishonor the family in such a way.<lb />
Certain aspects of Lorenzo's per-<lb />
sonality make the audience aware<lb />
of his faults.<lb />
A Bronx Tale was written by<lb />
Chazz Palminteri, the actor who<lb />
plays Sonny, and is based on his<lb />
play. One of the strongest aspects<lb />
of the film is Palminteri's story.<lb />
Though its foundation proves<lb />
somewhat familiar( like a cross<lb />
between Goodfellas and Boyz in the<lb />
Hood) the main characters are<lb />
given such depth and complexity<lb />
that the story fascinates the viewer<lb />
throughout the film.<lb />
Palminteri gives a great per-<lb />
formance. Sonny exudes the fear,<lb />
distrust and confidence necessary<lb />
for his role with the perfect amount<lb />
of warmth.<lb />
As Sonny tells Cologero about<lb />
the two types of education he<lb />
needsone in school, one in the<lb />
streetthe audience can feel the<lb />
love he has for the boy. Sonny<lb />
treats Cologero like the son he<lb />
never had. In the process, he al-<lb />
most makes Lorenzo look prud-<lb />
ish.<lb />
The audience feels Cologero's<lb />
pain as he struggles to understand<lb />
the impact that these two differ-<lb />
ent men have on his life.<lb />
DeNiro provides workman-<lb />
like direction. He tells the story in<lb />
much the same way as Martin<lb />
Scorsese, who directed DeNiro in<lb />
a number of films, but without<lb />
Scorsese's famed technical flair.<lb />
Some scenes in particular cry out<lb />
for more direction.<lb />
A barroom fight in which<lb />
Sonny and his men maim a group<lb />
of bikers loses its kinetic intensity<lb />
because DeNiro never allows the<lb />
audience to see the horrific vio-<lb />
lence occurring.<lb />
Perhaps DeNiro wanted to<lb />
record the fight the way Cologero<lb />

James<lb />
Laid<lb />
00 0 0<lb />
In the early 80s, many bands<lb />
with strange and new sounds<lb />
came out of Manchester, England.<lb />
They had names like Joy Division,<lb />
New Order and The Smiths. In<lb />
1983, Manchester witnessed the<lb />
formation of James, after they<lb />
came to the attention of Factory<lb />
Records. Their first two singles on<lb />
this label, "What's the World" and<lb />
"Hymn from a Village immedi-<lb />
ately set them apart from nearly<lb />
all of their contemporaries. Their<lb />
music had hit upon a new, unex-<lb />
plored sound, the angularity of<lb />
new wave married to an almost<lb />
folkish tranquillity.<lb />
Their fame spread quickly<lb />
across England, and even<lb />
Morrisey, lead singer of The<lb />
Smiths, professed a public love<lb />
for the band and invited them to<lb />
tour with The Smiths.<lb />
In 1985, James signed with Sire<lb />
records and produced their first<lb />
twoalbums. Shifter and SfnpMmi<lb />
Although these albums received<lb />
much critical acclaim and were<lb />
great original works, they never<lb />
really reached an audience. James<lb />
left the label in 1988 and the band<lb />
V Take Your Chances<lb />
JWV Definite Purchase<lb />
expanded, adding more mem-<lb />
bers and different instruments<lb />
keyboard, trumpet and violin.<lb />
Phonogram signed the band,<lb />
and their next studio album, Gold<lb />
Mother proved to be a turning<lb />
point. Their fan base grew.<lb />
1992 saw the release of their<lb />
million selling Seven, estab-<lb />
lishing their position as a major<lb />
rock band, which brings us to<lb />
1993 and their new album, Laid.<lb />
The album takes off in a new<lb />
direction with more folk and<lb />
acousticoriented music that<lb />
gives a more stripped-down<lb />
sound.<lb />
This album is subtle in both<lb />
its lyrics and shifting nature of<lb />
the sound, which is due, in part,<lb />
to their first collaboration with<lb />
Brian Eno. "As a producer, he's<lb />
quite unlike anyone we've ever<lb />
worked with states Tim Booth<lb />
(singer), "Very balanced, very<lb />
focused and extreme' encour-<lb />
aging, he encouraged us to im-<lb />
provise and take chances<lb />
This album is full of power-<lb />
ful and compelling songs. The<lb />
interplay between the band's<lb />
musical fluidity and Booth's<lb />
plaintive voice has an almost or-<lb />
ganic result. Most of the songs,<lb />
like "Low, Low, Low" and<lb />
"Skindiving" have a soft lullaby<lb />
sound. Even the more upbeat<lb />
tunes like "Laid" and "One of<lb />
the Three" are sedate at their<lb />
cores.<lb />
Laid is James' best effort yet.<lb />
It seems as if their talents have<lb />
reached a pinnacle on this al-<lb />
bum. If you like relaxing and<lb />
thought-provoking music, this<lb />
one is for you.<lb />

The East Carolina volleyball<lb />

of the season this weekend at<lb />
Minges Coliseum. The Pirates<lb />
picked up their first win of the<lb />
season in the Colonial Conference<lb />
witha 15-13,15-5,and 15-3victory<lb />
over the Dukes of James Madison<lb />
on Friday night. The Pirates were<lb />
not as successful against the Tribe<lb />
of William & Mary though, losing<lb />
the match in three games, 8-15,12-<lb />
15, and 2-15 on Saturday after-<lb />
noon.<lb />
"We played well against<lb />
JMU said ECU head coach<lb />
Martha McCaskill. "William &<lb />
Mary was just much better. We<lb />
needed to step up a notch against<lb />
them to win, but we didn't. The<lb />
service errors cost us game two,<lb />
and wecameoutflatingame three.<lb />
Hopefully, we can learn from this<lb />
game. We blocked well, ran the<lb />
offense fairly good,buthad trouble<lb />
passing the ball. The Tribe just has<lb />
a class team<lb />
The Pirates jumped all over<lb />
the Dukes Friday night. Freshman<lb />
Carrie Brnehad 11 kills and setter<lb />
Sarah Laurent had 34 assists in the<lb />
victory. On defense, Bme had six-<lb />
teen digs, while Staci Winters had<lb />
two solo blocks and three block<lb />
assists. Sophomore middle-hitter<lb />
Tara Venn also helped the Pirates<lb />
in the win with strong play at the<lb />
net.<lb />
With the Tribe of William &<lb />
Mary, it was a different story alto-<lb />
gether. William & Mary controlled<lb />
the first game early, taking an 8-0<lb />
lead behind the serving of junior<lb />
Kathy Bell. The Tribe stopped all<lb />
attempts by ECU to spike at the<lb />
net. A late game rally by EastCaro-<lb />
lina fell short, as they lost 15-8.<lb />
The Pirates came out tough in<lb />
game two, jumping out to a 4-1<lb />
lead. The Tribe fought back be-<lb />
hind juniors Tanya Mitchell and<lb />
Heather Burke. The Pirates again<lb />
got good play from Bme, along<lb />
with sophomores Melanie<lb />
Richards and Tonya Collins to<lb />
keep thingsdosetheentiregame.<lb />
Although ECU played tough,<lb />
they lost game two 15-12.<lb />
It was obvious the Pirates<lb />
were drained after the second<lb />
game. The Tribe came out in<lb />
game three and destroyed the<lb />
Pirates 15-2,controlling virtually<lb />
every aspect of the game.<lb />
The Pirates are now 10-19<lb />
overall, and 1-3 in the CAA. ECU<lb />
travels to UNC-Wilmington on<lb />
Tuesday for their last regular sea-<lb />
son conference match. The CAA<lb />
Championship is scheduled for<lb />
November 20-21 in<lb />
Williamsburg, Va.<lb />
"I feel good about where we<lb />

We need to stay focused. We're<lb />
playing well for the most part<lb />
McCaskill said.<lb />
"Right now we need to re-<lb />

I'm psyched about going to the<lb />
tournament, though Bme said.<lb />

By W.W. Ellis<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
With the North Carolina Col-<lb />

stake, the Pirates did not pick a<lb />
good time to come up short. Satur-<lb />
day, the Tirate ruggers were de-<lb />
molished 23-6 by an experienced<lb />
University of North Carolina team.<lb />
For the first rime this season, they<lb />
could not cross an opponent's goal<lb />
line.<lb />
Carolina scored first on two<lb />
penalty goals. When the Pirates<lb />
came back, Carolina scored tolead<lb />
13-3. Just before the half, Rich Moss<lb />
added his second penalty goal to<lb />
make it 13-6.<lb />
Down by a try, thePiratescame<lb />
charging out in the second half, but<lb />
just could not get the ball over the<lb />
line. They were repeatedly turned<lb />
away by a determined Tarheel de-<lb />
fense. In their enthusiasm to score,<lb />
ECU created their own downfall.<lb />
Any Carolina offensiveeffort which<lb />
got past the initial ECU defense<lb />
was bound to go a long way be-<lb />
cause the Pirates were crowding<lb />
forward on offense and playing<lb />
close to the edge.<lb />
Eventually, Carolina forced<lb />
another ECL' penalty and added<lb />
three points. Then, they a ppiied the<lb />
coup de grace with a long run for<lb />
another try. Whena Piratedefender<lb />
high-tackled the ball carrier, the<lb />
point for the conversion attempt<lb />
