Students robbed at gun point on campus<lb />
By Maureen Rich<lb />
Assistant News Editor<lb />
Late-night walks through<lb />
campus have resulted in one<lb />
armed robbery and one at-<lb />
tempted armed robbery of ECU<lb />
students within three days, and<lb />
ECU police are warning students<lb />
to use common sense to prevent<lb />
further attacks.<lb />
Last Wednesday night, at<lb />
approximately 2:50 a.m two<lb />
Belk Hall residents were con-<lb />
fronted by two males in the park-<lb />
ing lot of Chico's restaurant on<lb />
Cotanche Street, according to<lb />
police reports. The assailants fol-<lb />
lowed the individuals onto cam-<lb />
pus, engaging in casual conver-<lb />
sation.<lb />
The four walked together<lb />
until they reached the secluded<lb />
area between Flanagan and Stu-<lb />
dentHealth Services. Atthattime,<lb />
the suspects drew two weapons,<lb />
identified by the victims as one<lb />
semi-automatic handgun and an-<lb />
other handgun of some type. Both<lb />
victims were ordered to lie on the<lb />
ground.<lb />
While neither of the victims<lb />
carried a wallet, both wore ex-<lb />
pensive gold chains which were<lb />
taken by the assailants. The vic-<lb />
tims estimated the jewelry to be<lb />
worth $1,000.<lb />
Tne suspects warned the<lb />
victims that if they got up, they<lb />
would be shot. The suspects then<lb />
fled on foot, and the victims re-<lb />
turned to Belk Hall, where they<lb />
contacted ECU police.<lb />
Both assailants in this inci-<lb />
dent were described as black<lb />
males, in their early 20s. The vic-<lb />
tims described suspect number<lb />
one as approximately 6'1 220<lb />
lbs with very short black hair, a<lb />
stocky build and a thin mustache.<lb />
The victims said suspect number<lb />
one has a deep voice and a me-<lb />
dium complexion. This indi-<lb />
vidual wore a tan, three-quarter<lb />
length jacket and boots.<lb />
Suspect number two was<lb />
described as approximately 5'6<lb />
165 lbs stocky build, no facial<lb />
hair and a lso with very short hair.<lb />
He wore a black stocking-cap<lb />
with white markings, a white<lb />
warm-up jacket with red and blue<lb />
sleeves and dark pants.<lb />
The second assault took<lb />
place Saturday night, Sept. 16, at<lb />
about 3:05 a.m. behind the Rawl<lb />
Annex, south of the General<lb />
Classroom Building. According<lb />
to police reports, two black males<lb />
grabbed an Aycock resident<lb />
walking by himself and pulled<lb />
him behind Rawl.<lb />
The assailants then hit the<lb />
victim's head against the wall and<lb />
proceeded to punch him in the<lb />
chest, arms and side .<lb />
The victim told the suspects<lb />
he did not have any money, but<lb />
they demanded his wallet. The<lb />
victim opened his empty wallet,<lb />
at which time the suspects<lb />
reached into their jackets as if<lb />
they had guns, and ordered the<lb />
victim to the ground. The sus-<lb />
pects then fled on foot.<lb />
In this attack both assail-<lb />
ants were described as black<lb />
males in their 20's. Suspect num-<lb />
ber one is about six feet tall, 200<lb />
lbs with short black hair. He<lb />
wore a white cap, a black, heavy,<lb />
down coat, black baggy pants,<lb />
and black army-style boots.<lb />
Suspect number two wore<lb />
the exact same attire, but without<lb />
a hat. He was described as 5'6<lb />
and 180 lbs.<lb />
"We strongly suggest that<lb />
individuals don't walk by them-<lb />
selves at such a late time said<lb />
ECU Crime Prevention Officer<lb />
Keith Knox. "If they have to get<lb />
somewhere, we prefer them to<lb />
use good common sense and call<lb />
someone for an escort<lb />
ECU police will provide a<lb />
security escort for any individual,<lb />
male or femab, Knox said. He<lb />
reminded students to use the<lb />
blue-light emergency phones,<lb />
found at various locations across<lb />
campus, if they are approached,<lb />
or even if someone is acting sus-<lb />
piciously.<lb />
"These individuals come<lb />
out of nowhere Knox said.<lb />
"We suggest walking in groups<lb />
of three or more and don't<lb />
take unnecessary chances.<lb />
"If someone asks for<lb />
money or property, cooperate<lb />
with them fully, because noth-<lb />
ing is worth your life. Get to a<lb />
safe area as soon as it is safe to<lb />
do so, and report the attack to<lb />
either ECU police if it's on-cam-<lb />
pus or Greenville police if it's<lb />
off-campus<lb />
"I recommend that stu-<lb />
dents don't wear flashy, expen-<lb />
sive jewelry Knox said, but<lb />
he reminded students that, as<lb />
in the second assault, anyone<lb />
can be attacked.<lb />
While no arrests have<lb />
been made, ECU police con-<lb />
tinue to investigate both inci-<lb />
dents.<lb />

The American Red Cross<lb />
Blood Services wants to thank<lb />

"What a great effort by stu-<lb />

sultant for the American Red<lb />
Cross. "Thanks for caring and<lb />
sharing the 'Gift of Life<lb />
Each of you who donated<lb />
helped exceed the Red Cross'<lb />
goal of 200 units. A total of 275<lb />
units of blood was collected.<lb />
"This was a tremendous<lb />
help toward our collection goal<lb />
of providing our area hospitals<lb />
contend that they have the author<lb />
ity to appropriate funds during this<lb />
time, while precedent dictates that<lb />
money is only spent over the sum-<lb />
mer in emergency situations.<lb />
The SGA approved the<lb />
spending of about $15,000. The<lb />
most controversial appropriation<lb />
was that of $280 for three members<lb />
of the Executive Council to pur-<lb />
chase parking stickers.<lb />
The president already re-<lb />
ceives a parkingsticker, but whether<lb />
or not the other three members also<lb />
need them in order to do work for<lb />
the president and attend meetings<lb />
throughout campus is currently<lb />
under debate.<lb />
The class of 1993 donated<lb />
$5,000 for the clock that is now<lb />
standing outside the Graham<lb />
Building. The Executive board<lb />
granted $1,600 for six members of<lb />
the Panhellenic Council to fly to<lb />
Orlando and $330 to the Inter-<lb />
Fraternitv Council for rush adver-<lb />
tising.<lb />
In addition to $700 for politi-<lb />
cal science speakers and $280 for<lb />
booklets outlining the Honor Re-<lb />
view Board, several other projects<lb />
were funded.<lb />
The total budget for the 1993-<lb />
94 school year is $224,000 minus<lb />
the $124,000 in annual appropria-<lb />
tions and $15,000 that were appro-<lb />
priated over the summer. The SGA<lb />
has extra funding this year due to<lb />
the $2 increase in student fees.<lb />

Though he faces no oppo-<lb />
nent in the November 2 state-<lb />
wide election, CD. Spangler, Jr.<lb />
is in serious danger of losing.<lb />
And if Spangler loses this battle,<lb />
nearly everyone agrees that ECU<lb />
loses as well.<lb />
Spangler, the president of<lb />
the 16 campuses of the Univer-<lb />
sity of North Carolina, spoke to<lb />
the ECU Board of Trustees on<lb />
Friday in support of the univer-<lb />
sity improvement bond that goes<lb />
before the voters next month.<lb />
Two projects in the $310 million<lb />
UNC bond referendum are the<lb />
expansion and renovation of<lb />
Joyner Library at $28.9 million<lb />
and the acquisition of the former<lb />
Rose High School property at $5<lb />
million.<lb />
Accompanying Spangler<lb />
was Thomas Storrs of Charlotte.<lb />
The former head of NCNB, now<lb />
NationsBank Corporation, Storrs<lb />
is coordinating the statewide<lb />
campaign to secure passage of<lb />
the bond package. Both men<lb />
urged the Trustees and especially<lb />
the Chancellor to redouble their<lb />
efforts in fighting for the bonds.<lb />
"We have only 17 days left<lb />
to get this bond issue passed on<lb />
November 2. There is nobody left<lb />
on the face of the earth who<lb />
doesn't understand this must be<lb />
completed Spangler said.<lb />
Spangler blamed the reces-<lb />
sion of the late 1980s for having<lb />
to raise money through the<lb />
bond process for the univer-<lb />
sity system. At the same time,<lb />
he credited the General Assem-<lb />
bly for allowing the referen-<lb />
dum, which passed both<lb />
houses with only one dissent-<lb />
ing vote.<lb />
Whether or not the bond<lb />
passes depends largely on<lb />
people connected with the uni-<lb />
versity turning out a t the polls.<lb />
"We have the task of get-<lb />
ting the university family out<lb />
to vote. Probably one million<lb />
people would wake up today<lb />
and say they are friends of the<lb />
university<lb />
Storrs was more dramatic<lb />
in tone, defining his campaign<lb />
in military terms. "This is a<lb />
battle fought on 16 campuses<lb />
around the state. On those cam-<lb />
puses the field leaders will be<lb />
the chancellors he said.<lb />
Storrs said the chancel-<lb />
lors faced two challenges. "First<lb />
we have to let people know<lb />
what the facts are. Then we<lb />
have to get people who favor<lb />
us to go out and vote<lb />
Several things are work-<lb />
ing in the university's favor,<lb />
including a lack of organized<lb />
opposition and an "unforeseen<lb />
talent in the political field" on<lb />
the part of the chancellors,<lb />
Storrs said. The only disadvan-<lb />
tage he mentioned was a lack<lb />
of interesting political races<lb />

by an 1893 graduate. Merle Stauffer Boyer's will stipulated that<lb />
the college ultimately would receive all proceeds from a trust<lb />
established to benefit his two children, Kathrvn and Donald,<lb />
during their lifetimes. Boyer, a physician in Philadelphia, died in<lb />
1941. Kathryn died in 1979, and Donald died in 1993. They left no<lb />
heirs, so the trust was dissolved and the proceeds were given to<lb />
Gettysburg College. "What makes the Merle Boyer gift so special<lb />
is that students who will make their mark on the world of the 21st<lb />
century will have as their benefactor a graduate from the 19th<lb />
century said college president Gordon Haaland.<lb />

Chapel Hill High School is sus-<lb />

of the recommended works were<lb />
sexually explicit.<lb />
The move by Principal<lb />

photocopied excerpts from sev-<lb />

"It's not even appropriate<lb />

Royster, a school board member.<lb />
"I'm very disappointed that this<lb />

Pretty soon that is just what<lb />
sight-impaired eastern North<lb />

The Eastern North Carolina<lb />
Radio Reading Service (ENC RRS),<lb />
scheduled to begin broadcasting<lb />
by mid-November, will transmit<lb />
radio reports of local news to over<lb />
5,000 eastern North Carolina resi-<lb />
dents who are unable to read<lb />
newspapersor magazines because<lb />
of visual impairments or severe<lb />
handicaps.<lb />
"I cannot tell you how ben-<lb />
eficial this is going to be for sight-<lb />
impaired people said Ramona<lb />
VanNortwick, founder of ENC<lb />
RRS.<lb />
The service will broadcast<lb />
from a studio in the Brody build-<lb />

mission will reach 10 counties in<lb />
eastern N.C. and can be picked up<lb />
by special radio receivers pro-<lb />
vided free of charge by Services<lb />
for the Blind.<lb />
"Getting what you cannot<lb />
on regular newscasts is how Dr.<lb />
Ernest Phelps, ENC RRS coordi-<lb />
nator, describes the service.<lb />
Volunteers will read a wide<lb />
variety of local news including<lb />
advertisements, obituaries, reci-<lb />
pes and even Dear Abby. Cur-<lb />
rently, national news (Neiv York<lb />
Times, Newsweek and etc.) is of-<lb />
fered 24 hours a day. Until now,<lb />
local news hasheenunavailable.<lb />
The service works com-<lb />
pleted through volunteer ef-<lb />
forts, with the exception of one<lb />
paid employee. Auditions are<lb />
being held to recruit volunteer<lb />
readers. The broadcasters will<lb />
begin programming by reading<lb />
live from The Daily Reflector for<lb />
about an hour in the morning,<lb />
the shows will bebroadcastagain<lb />
later each day.<lb />
"The whole idea is that it's<lb />
a community project said<lb />
Phelps.<lb />
Over $25,000 has been<lb />
raised throughout the area in<lb />
order to make the ENC RRS pos-<lb />
sible. Organizations such as the<lb />
United Way, Burrough's<lb />
Wellcome, the Pitt County Com-<lb />
missioners, the Lions Founda-<lb />
tion, the Kiwanna's Club and<lb />
other professionals have all<lb />
helped to support the ENC RRS.<lb />
Money is presently being sought<lb />
not only for the purchase of ra-<lb />
dio receivers, but also for the<lb />
production costs.<lb />
"It's an effort that is going<lb />
to be very rewarding. A lot of<lb />
work has gone into it said<lb />
VanNortwick.<lb />
VanNortwick is hoping to<lb />
continue expansion of the ser-<lb />
vice to offer cooking shows, book<lb />

other beneficial programs.<lb />

"I chaired a committee on<lb />
safety in the workplace. I ain't too<lb />
sure, it the tire marshal didn't<lb />
come over here, he might not close<lb />
the library down.<lb />
"You've got students with<lb />
cubicles in the hallways trying to<lb />
get access. How do you come to<lb />
school and get an education with-<lb />
out access to books? You want to<lb />
read a book, or you need a book<lb />
for your research. So you have to<lb />
say to the librarian 'What time is<lb />
the next truck going to the ware-<lb />
house7 Sign my book on the list<lb />
and when the truck gets back,<lb />
bring it to me Is that a way to<lb />
educate our students?" Fitch<lb />
asked.<lb />
The reason the General As-<lb />
FAIR<lb />
sembly is using bonds to fund the<lb />
universities and other projects is<lb />
economics. Because interest rates<lb />
are low, and North Carolina has a<lb />
favorable bond rating, Fitch said<lb />
issuing bonds is preferable to ap-<lb />
propriating the funds outright.<lb />
Fitch praised the younger<lb />
generation and especially theCol-<lb />
lege Democrats. "I'm excited<lb />
about the way this organization<lb />
is leading the way on campus. I<lb />
differ from a lot of folks my age<lb />

Concluding his remarks,<lb />
Fitch made one last appeal on<lb />
behalf of the bond. "Do what I<lb />
know you will do. Take your<lb />
friends, take your relatives, en-<lb />
courage your friends. On the sec-<lb />

Everyone wins, for ex-<lb />
ample, at the crayon game. For<lb />
$2, players throw darts until they<lb />
hit a picture of a big crayon. Then,<lb />
they are awarded a 4-foot-long<lb />
balloon shaped like a crayon that<lb />
costs the operator about 75 cents,<lb />
said Mark Popovich, concessions<lb />
manager for the James E. Strates<lb />
Shows, which manages the mid-<lb />

"All you're doing is buy-<lb />
ing a balloon Bellamy said.<lb />
N.C. State University base-<lb />
ball standout and St. Louis Car-<lb />
dinal player Tracy Woodson<lb />
tested his considerable skills at<lb />
the fair at the request of The News<lb />
& Observer of Raleigh. He spent<lb />
$34 and walked away with sev-<lb />
eral hundred dollars worth of<lb />
prizes on Friday.<lb />
"They're winnable. You've<lb />
got to say that said Woodson,<lb />
who won seven of the 11 games<lb />
he tried. He picked up six big<lb />
stuffed animals and two gold-<lb />
fish.<lb />
The pyramid of three milk<lb />
bottles he knocked down is con-<lb />
sidered one of the midway's<lb />
hardest games. So is the bushel<lb />
basket toss, where a player must<lb />
throw two softballs into a slanted<lb />
basket without having them roll<lb />
out.<lb />
But Woodson said it was<lb />
tips provided by the game op-<lb />
erators that helped him win.<lb />
At the bottle toss, carny Bill<lb />
Bradley told Woodson most<lb />
prizes are won by young people<lb />
because their throws are more<lb />
level than throws by taller adults.<lb />
Woodson, who stands 6-<lb />
foot-3, said, "So i threw almost<lb />
sidearm so I was almost even<lb />
At the basket throw, a carny<lb />
told Woodson that softballs<lb />
would fly out unless they first<lb />
hit the basket near the rim. After<lb />
three tries, Woodson won a<lb />
stuffed dog.<lb />
Woodson also won prizes<lb />
throwing balls at beer bottles and<lb />
plastic plates games in which<lb />
someone with an accurate throw<lb />
would have an advantage.<lb />
He also picked up a 3-foot<lb />
purple-and-white stuffed mouse<lb />
after lofting a softball on his sec-<lb />
ond try into a milk can 5 feet<lb />
away.<lb />
"I can't believe it<lb />
Woodson said. He's played<lb />
games at fairs, carnivals and<lb />
amusement parks for years, "but<lb />
all I ever won was that measly<lb />
little stuff<lb />
Woodson lost at a pool<lb />
game, failing to sink four balls.<lb />
He was unable to pick up a beer<lb />
bottle with a ring suspended<lb />
from a stick, and he lost at a<lb />
second bushel-basket toss.<lb />
Odds aren't good of taking<lb />
home a prize from most games.<lb />
The ring toss has been a<lb />
midway staple for decades. Play-<lb />
ers pay a dime for small plastic<lb />
rings, which they aim for the<lb />
necks of hundreds of pop bottles<lb />
standing upright on the ground.<lb />
There is only one winner<lb />
out of every 1,000 rings thrown,<lb />
said John Willis, a game opera-<lb />
tor.<lb />
Willis said the game doesn't<lb />
generate as much profit as it<lb />
might seem.<lb />
For every $100 in revenue,<lb />
half goes for barkers and mid-<lb />
way rent. Additional costs of<lb />
transportation and insurance<lb />
leave operators a $15 profit,<lb />
Willis said.<lb />
He said players can win by<lb />
skipping the rings across bottle<lb />
tops, instead of aiming for a par-<lb />
ticular bottle. "Kids win more<lb />
because they're closer than<lb />
adults to the playing surface<lb />
Willis said.<lb />
Bellamy said he knows<lb />
enough about the midway's odds<lb />
to skip the games.<lb />
"That's why I spend my<lb />
money on the rides when I come<lb />
to the fair Bellamy said.<lb />
Continued from page 1<lb />
overwhelming turnout so that<lb />
these bonds and the future of this<lb />
state continue to move forward<lb />
instead of standing still<lb />
In an interview held earlier<lb />
with The East Carolinian, Fitch said<lb />
he is still undecided about run-<lb />
ning for Congress. "We're still<lb />
looking If we were to run, we<lb />
would be running to win, not just<lb />
running to run. I've never lost at<lb />
anything in life except marbles. I<lb />
wouldn't enter this race to lose<lb />
he said.<lb />
Fitch said this past session<lb />
of the General Assembly will go<lb />
down as one of the greatest in<lb />
history. Among the record num-<lb />
ber of laws passed were the bond<lb />
referendum, a tuition increase,<lb />
prison issues, rural economic de-<lb />
velopment issues and the .08<lb />
blood alcohol level.<lb />
The General Assembly also<lb />
killed the proposed governor's<lb />
veto power and the state lottery.<lb />
"The only way I can explain the<lb />
RED CROSS<lb />
veto is that it is dead. I'm glad it<lb />
is dead, because I don't think<lb />
that's the way to go Fitch said.<lb />
Though many have criti-<lb />
cized Governor Hunt for not do-<lb />
ing enough to attract Mercedes,<lb />
Fitch said he did too much. Rather<lb />
than promising $100 million<lb />
worth of incentives, Fitch said<lb />
North Carolina should have<lb />
bought $100 million worth of<lb />
stock in Mercedes, and would<lb />
thus have had a say in where to<lb />
build the new plant.<lb />
Fitch also defended the job<lb />
performance of President Clinton.<lb />
"I think he has a hard job. People<lb />
may expect a miracle overnight,<lb />
but it will not occur<lb />
He praised Clinton's budget<lb />
and deficit reduction plan and his<lb />
position on Somalia, but indicated<lb />
that he would oppose a tax on<lb />
tobacco to finance the health care<lb />
plan. "To tax tobacco to pay the<lb />
cost is as wrong as not taxing alco-<lb />
hol, and alcohol is not on the table<lb />

Assaults induce weapon discussion<lb />
It's starting to resemble "Mortal Kombat" out<lb />
there, folks.<lb />
Yes, we speak of Greenville. Who would have<lb />
thought that the quaint little town we call home<lb />
could be privy to an armed robbery and an at-<lb />
tempted armed robbery, both of which occurred<lb />
within three days of the other? And not only did<lb />
they take place in the fair Emerald City, but on the<lb />
ECU campus.<lb />
Last Wednesday night, two students were<lb />
confronted by two males in the parking lot of<lb />
Chico's restaurant, who proceeded to follow the<lb />
individuals onto campus, engaging in "lite" con-<lb />
versation. The four walked together until they<lb />
reached the secluded area between Flanagan and<lb />
Student Health Services. The suspects then drew<lb />
two weapons, one identified as a semi-automatic<lb />
handgun and the other a handgun of some type.<lb />
Both victims were ordered to lie on the ground, or<lb />
they would be shot. It is estimated by the victims<lb />
that more than $1,000 worth of gold jewelry was<lb />
stolen.<lb />
The second assault took place Saturday night<lb />
behind the Rawl Annex, south of General Class-<lb />
room Building. Twoblack males grabbed an Aycock<lb />
resident walking by himself and pulled himbehind<lb />
Rawl. The assailants then hit the victim's head<lb />
against the wall and proceeded to punch him in the<lb />
chest, arms and side areas. When the victim indi-<lb />
cated that he had no money in his wallet, the<lb />
assailants reached into their jackets as if they had<lb />
guns and ordered the victim to the ground.<lb />
Both of these incidents prove some very im-<lb />
portant things: Greenville is not immune to violent<lb />
acts and no one should get lulled into believing that<lb />
they can walk the streets without harm. Gone are<lb />
thedays when you couldeventhirikofleavingyour<lb />
doorunlockedorwalkingdownadarkstreetalone.<lb />
It's just not a pretty world out there, and unfortu-<lb />
nately it takes incidents like these to wake some<lb />
people up.<lb />
An important point to make is that one of the<lb />
assailants was in possession of a semi-automatic<lb />
weapon. Now, excuse us for getting a little upset<lb />
here, but honestly, there is no need in this world for<lb />
semi-automatic weapons in the hands of anyone,<lb />
and we challenge all readers to provide an instance<lb />
where said semi-automatic weapon is necessary.<lb />
It's hard to stomach the argument that Joe<lb />
Redneck needs one to shoot Bambi's head off in the<lb />
fierce sport that is hunting. It's not like the bear-<lb />
deer-moose-duck is standing around with a bullet-<lb />
proof vest and a semi-automatic of his own saying,<lb />
"Come on, man, lay it on me. I'm ready for ya<lb />
So the NRA gets in the middle of it, citing<lb />
freedom of expression and other such misinterpre-<lb />
tations of the Second Amendment. The Second<lb />
Amendment is extended only to those situations<lb />
having some "reasonable relationship" to the effi-<lb />
ciency of a well-regulated militia. This obviously<lb />
has nothing to do with private ownership of weap-<lb />
ons (or does it, to NRA members?).<lb />
The truth is, a ban on assault weapons (as<lb />
proposed in the Brady Bill) is not only constitu-<lb />
tional, but studies show it would also be effective.<lb />
The argument has been made that criminals get<lb />
their guns illegally, so why target legal sales? That<lb />
argument doesn't float in 1988, the Oakland<lb />
Police Department found that only 12 of assault<lb />
weapons seized in criminal activity were obtained<lb />
illegally. Fully 88 of them were bought legally<lb />
over the counter.<lb />
Obviously the supply needs to be dried up as<lb />
soon as possible, especially if we're faced, as<lb />
Greenville residents, with the fact that semi-auto-<lb />
matic weapons are here and being used on stu-<lb />
dents.<lb />
Wake up, everyone. This reality has found it's<lb />
way into Greenville, and you're kidding yourself if<lb />
you think its leaving anytime soon. Don't walk<lb />
alone and call an escort in every situation, if pos-<lb />
sible.<lb />

Old, usable books thrown out with trash<lb />
One of the hot topics of lo-<lb />
cal interest as the November elec-<lb />
tions approach is the bond refer-<lb />
endum which, if passed, will pro-<lb />
vide funds for renovations to<lb />
Joyner Library, among other<lb />
things.<lb />
At Saturday's Homecom-<lb />
ing football game between ECU<lb />
and Louisiana Tech, Pee-Dee<lb />
sported a sticker urging us to<lb />
vote "Yes" on the referendum.<lb />
Ficklen Stadium's scrolling mes-<lb />
sage board said the same thing.<lb />
I have mixed feelings about<lb />
the bond referendum. On the one<lb />
hand I know Joyner Library and<lb />
other schools in the UNC system<lb />
need capital improvements. Yet,<lb />
I also realize that we will have to<lb />
pay for these improvements<lb />
somehow, and as with most gov-<lb />
ernment-run endeavors, there's<lb />
sure to be a substantial amount<lb />
of wasted revenues.<lb />
One such area of waste is in<lb />
the discarding of old but per-<lb />
fectly usable books. I was brows-<lb />
ing through my father's library<lb />
the other day when I came across<lb />
a womhardback copy of The Scar-<lb />
let Pimpernel. Scrawled on the first<lb />
page of the book was the single<lb />
word "DISCARDED Probably<lb />
thrown out of a high school li-<lb />
brary a great number of years ago,<lb />
I surmised.<lb />
Leafing through the dingy<lb />
pages grown brittle with age, that<lb />
faintly sweet, old-book aroma<lb />
wafted up into my face. Immedi-<lb />
ately the affect waste of the lone<lb />
word "DISCARDED" occurred to<lb />
me. Here was a classic work of<lb />
literature as viable today as it was<lb />
when Orczy rested her pen from<lb />
its completion, and someone had<lb />
desecrated the book (apparently<lb />
with great celerity, judging from<lb />
the sloppy handwriting) with a<lb />
stroke of a word.<lb />
This nameless, faceless van-<lb />
dal, now surely faded into the mist<lb />
of time, proved on some warm<lb />
summer day, as students filed onto<lb />
buses for the last trip home of the<lb />
school year, that the pen is indeed<lb />
mightier than the sword.<lb />
Why, I asked myself, was<lb />
such wasteful and drastic action<lb />
taken? A book is not a car, to be<lb />
junked once the engine is eroded<lb />
by friction; a novel contains no<lb />
moving parts. Our fingers move<lb />
to turn the pages, and our eyes<lb />
move to read the lines written<lb />
down, but the book is innocent. If<lb />
the cover becomes ratty, or the<lb />
pages brown and crinkled and<lb />
lacking in aesthetic quality, then it<lb />
is we who are deficient, lacking<lb />
the ken to peer beyond these su-<lb />
perficialities to the true meaning<lb />
of the gift. What of a few torn<lb />
pages or faded ink? What can these<lb />
trifles amount to in the face of<lb />
genuine Art, with a capital "A" as<lb />
Sandburg would have it spelled?<lb />
Thinking these things, I<lb />
picked up the forgotten book with<lb />
"DISCARDED" scratched inside<lb />
and, gripping it firmly with both<lb />
hands, left the study and made<lb />
towards my home, where I placed<lb />
the novel on my bookshelf. It rests<lb />
there to this day, safe and appreci-<lb />
ated.<lb />
If the administrators of<lb />
Joyner Library care about curtail-<lb />
ing wastes such as this as much as<lb />
I do, then I say we should vote for<lb />
the bond referendum.<lb />
At the very least we'll have<lb />
more space to store old books<lb />
which otherwise mightbe thrown<lb />
out with the trash.<lb />

By Brian Hall<lb />
Bond referendum intricacies misleading<lb />
On November 2 the voters<lb />
of this state will decide whether to<lb />
borrow $310 million for capital<lb />
improvements at state universi-<lb />
ties, about $29 million of which<lb />
would be used to expand Joyner<lb />
Library. While not questioning the<lb />
necessity of library expansion,<lb />
there are several reasons this pack-<lb />
age should be rejected.<lb />
First, since the state wants to<lb />
borrow money, it must be short on<lb />
funds. Nothing could be further<lb />
from the truth. This state took in<lb />
over $14.5 billion in fiscal 1993. If<lb />
the state would only cut present<lb />
spending by two-tenths of one<lb />
percent, it could pay for our li-<lb />
brary in just one year.<lb />
Second, according to a pam-<lb />
phlet from the University Board<lb />
of Governors, we are assured by<lb />
State Treasurer Harlan Boyles that<lb />
"state taxes should not have to be<lb />
raised to meet payments of inter-<lb />
est and principal We have heard<lb />
this one from politicians before.<lb />
Two years ago in Charlotte, the<lb />
city council promised that taxes<lb />
would not have to be raised to pay<lb />
for bonds. Last year Charlotte be-<lb />
gan taxing rain that falls on houses.<lb />
Third, once the government<lb />
has this money, there is nothing to<lb />
prevent it from spending the<lb />
money any way it wishes. I know<lb />
of at least two cases in just the past<lb />
few years where bond money was<lb />
spent on projects the voters did<lb />
not approve.<lb />
Finally, this same pamphlet<lb />
says that North Carolina has a<lb />
triple-A credit rating, which will<lb />
keep the interest rate low. The in-<lb />
ference being that borrowing is a<lb />
good idea. Let me use an illustra-<lb />
tion to disprove this.<lb />
Suppose, to make the figures<lb />
more understandable, we use an<lb />
individual, making $20,000 a year<lb />
after taxes, to represent the state.<lb />
At that scale, all the university<lb />
improvements would cost about<lb />
$400. Our present state debt<lb />
would be about $950. Joyner ex-<lb />
pansion would cost about $40. So<lb />
we have a person, $950 in debt,<lb />
who needs to make $400 worth of<lb />
repairs in the next few years.<lb />
Which would be wiser? A) Bor-<lb />
row the money and pay interest<lb />
for many years to come, or B) Use<lb />
$400 that this person would have<lb />
spent on something else.<lb />
Our representatives are try-<lb />
ing to mislead us with these<lb />
bonds. After all, who is going to<lb />
vote against improving educa-<lb />
tion? They hope that we will vol-<lb />
untarily vote to increase spend-<lb />
ing so that they don't have to<lb />
make tough spending decisions.<lb />
Letters to the Editor<lb />
To the Editor<lb />
Flip down your radio dial, and you'll hear any<lb />
number of commercial radio formats on the air: Urban<lb />
Contemporary, Classic Rock,Top40,Country,etc. These<lb />
formats are dictated by such things as trends in record<lb />
sales, advertising revenues, opinion polls, and the musi-<lb />
cal tastes of the people in charge of radio stations. It's all<lb />
a very complex system, designed not only to mirror the<lb />
tastes of the public, but to predict and shape those tastes.<lb />
Andifwe'renotcareful,WZMBmaysoonjointhat<lb />
system. I've followed with great interest the saga of Beth<lb />
Arthur as it's unfolded in recent editions of The East<lb />
Carolinian. The accusation that Arthur has been sneaky<lb />
in trying to change the format of our campus radio<lb />
station seems to have struck a nerve. Arthur's written a<lb />
venomous letter in reply to those accusations, and now<lb />
in an October 7 headline article, she attempts to set the<lb />
record straight.<lb />
Exceptshedoesn't, really. Arthur says,inher letter,<lb />
"I have not discussed this with the staff at WZMB,<lb />
because I have not finished researching the subject of a<lb />
format change Then, in the Oct. 7 article, we are told<lb />
that Arthur said she spoke with the program director of<lb />
WZMB, Lee Judge. Now wait a minute. Either she talked<lb />
to somebody on the WZMB staff or she didn't. What<lb />
gives?<lb />
But this is only the first puzzling thing about the<lb />
story. If Arthur hasn't "finished researching the subject<lb />
then why did she, as the Oct. 7 article states, discuss a<lb />
format change with the Media Board? Why, in fact, did<lb />
she suggest Urban Contemporary and Country as for-<lb />
mat options? She felt comfortable enough with her<lb />
research to discuss these matters with her bosses but not<lb />
her employees?<lb />
Right. Arthur also talks about the stations played<lb />

In last Thursday's issue of The East Carolinian,<lb />
Gregory Dickens lamented the role of men in our society<lb />
and their continued struggle with the scourge of politi-<lb />
cally correct behavior. He may be pleased to know that<lb />
a strong resistance is forming to confront the faulty logic<lb />
of PC and that men are now able to walk upright once<lb />
more.<lb />
Inrecenttelevisionadvertisingforapopularmen's<lb />

guysbeen?"The manufacturer then asserts, with images<lb />
of virility, that, "menareback Andin themindsof most<lb />

The Brut commercial is one of many indicators tha t<lb />
sexually secure women desire a comeback of the tradi-<lb />
tional male persona. They have grown restless with the<lb />
"sensitive" man who nibbles on quiches and cries on<lb />
command. And they shun the impotenceof the Eighties'<lb />
male who dribbles Lord Byron, now favoring the more<lb />
penetrating stanzas of Garth Brooks.<lb />
It's no headline that scores of good men have been<lb />
missing in action for years; held in detention by a small<lb />
but vicious amazon assault squad and terrorized for<lb />
their inherent masculine ways. The resurrection of the<lb />
American male is a potent reaction to the doctrine of<lb />
these hellborn feminists and the crescendo lies of Anita<lb />
onthecampusbussystem,citingKISS102asapopular<lb />
choice. "That tells me something she said. It tells me<lb />
something, too. The buses play the most inoffensive<lb />
music they can. They want Elevator Music, something<lb />
so bland that no one could possibly complaui about it<lb />
Elevator Music KISS 102 Yeah, that tells me a lot.<lb />
I also have a hard time buying Arthur's claim<lb />
thatAltemativeandReggaewillcontinuetobeplayed,<lb />
when she's talking about going Country. I seriously<lb />
doubt you're going to hear a Clint Black tune followed<lb />
by the Revolting Cocks' "Steers, Beers, and Queers<lb />
But what an image that is, huh?<lb />
What it comes down to is mis: Beth Arthur and<lb />
Lee Judge have both expressed a personal dislike for<lb />
alternative music, and they're in charge. Never mind<lb />
that anyone who wants to hear mainstream music can<lb />
turn toadozen other frequencieson the dial thatsound<lb />
better than WZMB ever will. Never mind that Alterna-<lb />
tive Music has no other outlet (along with the Reggae,<lb />
Jazz, Heavy Metal, and other styles WZMB plays).<lb />
Never mind that Greenville has a fairly large popula-<lb />
tion of Alternative music fans who are being serviced<lb />
by WZMB and no one else.<lb />
Arthur has proposed a survey to decide the fate<lb />
of WZMB. But Alternativepeople are not likely to take<lb />
any survey very seriously. So I'd like to make a plea to<lb />
all the freaks (and non-freaks) reading mis. For once,<lb />
suppress those subversive tendencies. Don't give an<lb />
obviously fake name. Don't put Gregorian Chants<lb />
down as your music choice. Taike this seriously, and<lb />
save East Carolina's only dissenting voice, WZMB.<lb />

Concrete Blonde releases fifth hit<lb />
Photo courtesy of Capitol Records<lb />
Pictured above are members of Concrete Blonde. From left to right, Jim Mankey,<lb />
Johnette Napolitano and Harry Rushakoff. Mexican Moon hit stores two weeks ago.<lb />
By Sarah Wahlert<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Concrete Blonde has always been the<lb />
voice from the other side, the dark chil-<lb />
dren of Los Angeles' sunny skies. With<lb />
unflinching rage and passion, they record<lb />
events that would otherwise slip by un-<lb />
noticed. Their songs are often about the<lb />
things that happen in the back of people's<lb />
minds. They take ugly truths and mix<lb />
them with beautiful melodies, making<lb />
the experience universal.<lb />
Mexican Moon, their fifth album, and<lb />
first with Capitol Records, retains the ex-<lb />
citing intensity of their sound. Dramatic<lb />
and serious, this album is the perfect fol-<lb />
low-up to Walking in London, their fourth<lb />
endeavor. Before that album, Concrete<lb />
Blonde had been on the road almost con-<lb />
stantly.<lb />
There were hard times with manage-<lb />
ment hassles and record company prob-<lb />
lems. A couple of the band's members<lb />
decided to do outside projects. Singer<lb />
Johnette Napolitano took a break from<lb />
her native L. A. to experience London and<lb />
Europe, hoping to renew her creativity.<lb />
She decided to come home after the un-<lb />
fortunate L.A. riots.<lb />
Napolitano returned with a slew of<lb />
songs that turned into Walking in London.<lb />
After the success of that album, she<lb />
bought a house and involved herself in<lb />
community service. And with time to<lb />
spare, she started work on Mexican Moon.<lb />
Concrete Blonde was again a very<lb />
close unit. Jim Mankey had remained con-<lb />
stant as guitarist, and drummers Harry<lb />
Rushakoff and Paul Thompson both ap-<lb />
pear on the album.<lb />
"I've finally come to terms with what<lb />
I do Napolitano says. "I used to think,<lb />
'rockwho cares?' But I love what I do.<lb />
I'm supposed to be doing this, you know?"<lb />
Johnette Napolitano was meant for<lb />
her profession. After listening to Mexican<lb />
Moon, I'm sure many others would agree.<lb />
I instantly took a liking to the fast-paced<lb />
first song, "Jenny I Read<lb />
And as if that song wasn't catchy<lb />
enough, the enduringly romantic title<lb />
track followed.<lb />
Each song seemed to have a different<lb />
sound, which kept me very interested.<lb />
"Rain" is the perfect showcase for<lb />
Napolitano's beautiful voice.<lb />
"I Call it Love" and "Jesus Forgive<lb />
Me" are songs definitely more centered<lb />
around Jim Mankey's smashing guitar<lb />
talent.<lb />
The loneliness of constant travel is<lb />
revealed in the empowering "Close to<lb />
Home<lb />
To wrap up this wonderfully diverse<lb />
piece of work is "Bajo la Lune Mexicana<lb />
which is a second version of the title track<lb />
sung in Spanish.<lb />
"I've always wanted to sing in Span-<lb />
ish Napolitano says. The song is a trib-<lb />
ute to her favorite country.<lb />
Mexican Moon is an enjoyable treat.<lb />
Even if alternative music isn't your per-<lb />
sonal favorite, listeners can find at least<lb />
one song on this album that touches their<lb />
fancyif not a song, then the funny cover<lb />
design displaying two skeletons tearing<lb />
it up on the dance floor.<lb />
There's an even better reason to buy<lb />
it: give it to someone as a Halloween gift!<lb />
Magician<lb />

By Laura Wright<lb />
Assistant Lifestyle Editor<lb />
When you hear the word "magic<lb />

psychic powers or rabbits in top hats?<lb />
Magician Gary Shelton, of New Bern,<lb />

On Thursday, Oct. 14, Shelton per-<lb />
formed before Dr. Frank Farmer's hon-<lb />
ors English class, "Love, Magic and Per-<lb />
suasion: Rhetorics Old and New The<lb />
purpose of his visit was to provide a<lb />

key role in the creation of a successful<lb />

He has won the "Tonight Show"<lb />

has been performed on "David<lb />

this shrinking population are Harry<lb />

Robert Cray falls back on the blues<lb />
By Kris Hoffler<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The Robert Cray Band will<lb />
release its eighth musical arrange-<lb />
ment this fall. Robert Cray has<lb />
come into his own with Shame & A<lb />
Sin; and in this album, he has re-<lb />
turned to the basic formula of his<lb />
roots, the blues.<lb />
Although he has been on the<lb />
scene for 20 years, Cray's break-<lb />
through came with his 1986 debut<lb />
on the Mercury-Hightone label.<lb />
The album Strong Persuader won<lb />
him a Grammy and yielded two<lb />
international'iiK "mokingGun"<lb />
and "Right Next Door (Because of<lb />
Me) He followed with the al-<lb />
bums Don't Be Afraid of the Dark<lb />
(1988), Midnight Stroll (1990) and<lb />
Was Warned (1992), all of which<lb />
have helped his steady growing<lb />
popularity with fans and critics<lb />
alike.<lb />
The past seven albums have<lb />
not been so attentive to the purity<lb />
ot the blues. Cray has drawn from<lb />
many genres in the past: r & b,<lb />
rock, pop, jazz and gospel all in-<lb />
fluence much of his previous work.<lb />
But in the case of Shame & A Sin,<lb />
the feeling is strictly straight-up,<lb />
12-bar blues, the music that is the<lb />
soul of America.<lb />
Some arti .s seem to be lean-<lb />
ing away from the over-produc-<lb />
tion that is the curse of the 90s.<lb />
Many of Cray's past excursions<lb />
have been an entity of much stu-<lb />
dio production, but not this time.<lb />
"We didn't go for the big produc-<lb />
tion thing says Cray. "We went<lb />
down to a small studio and just<lb />
had a good time It's easy to tell<lb />
this when listening to the CD; the<lb />
sound is pure and unfiltered.<lb />
Some of the songs on this re-<lb />
lease mix modern subject matter<lb />
with the aged methods of the<lb />
blues. "1040 Blues" and "I'm Just<lb />
Lucky That Way" aresongs tailor-<lb />
made for the recession-struck 90s.<lb />
Most of us have had a good dose<lb />
of the 1040 blues and long for the<lb />
day when we can tell the boss to<lb />
kiss off, because we just hit the<lb />
lottery.<lb />
However, most of the songs<lb />
adhere to the standards of the<lb />
blues subject matter. Heart break,<lb />
infidelity and an insatiable long-<lb />
ing for the opposite sex are the<lb />
archetypal notions that the blues<lb />
convey so well. "I Shiver "Don't<lb />
Break this Ring" and "Leave Well<lb />
Enough Alone" are new compo-<lb />
sitions with all the feel of old stan-<lb />
dards.<lb />

Staff Reports<lb />

Robert Cray has done it again. In his new album Shame and a Sin, Cray<lb />
explores his roots to bring a blues melody back into the new tunes.<lb />
Cray has hit a new level of<lb />
artistry with Shame & A Sin. There<lb />
are few, if any, artists of this cali-<lb />
ber in modern music. Citing Cray's<lb />
role in the continuation of the<lb />
blues, Eric Clapton told Rolling<lb />
Stone: "It's really down to Robert<lb />
Cray. He's the only player I know<lb />
who's absolutely, totally<lb />
authenticTf you like the blues<lb />
(and I don't see how anyone could<lb />
dislike it), this one is for you.<lb />
Freddy Jones Band debuts<lb />
By Kris Hoffler<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The Freddy Jones Band has its<lb />
roots in the heartland of America.<lb />
The ban is a Chicago-bred quintet<lb />
that has been playing the Midwest<lb />
forsometimenowandhaspickedup<lb />
a strong following along with a best-<lb />
selling independent release.<lb />
I Inthelateeighties,WayneHealy<lb />
and Marty Lloyd met as college stu-<lb />
dents in Indiana and began playing<lb />
together, feeding off of each other's<lb />
musical talent and wide-ranging<lb />
musical tastes. These two guitarist<lb />
became the band's founding mem-<lb />
bers. They were soon joined by bass-<lb />
ist Jim Bonaccorsi, drummer Simon<lb />
Harrocks. Jim's brother, Rob, joined<lb />
as the third guitarist and fifth mem-<lb />
ber of the group.<lb />
After their gigs on thissummer's<lb />
Hp.R.D.E. tour, The Freddy Jones<lb />
Band decided to get down to busi-<lb />
ness and make a studio album. The<lb />
result is Waiting For The Night, the<lb />
band's debut on Capricorn Records.<lb />
This album has manv stand out<lb />
The Freddy Jones Band<lb />
originals like 'Take the Time "In A<lb />
Daydream" and the countryblues<lb />
fusion ballad "Dixie Dynamite<lb />
There is even a remake of a blues<lb />
classic, "Crosscut Saw which has<lb />
been changed to fit the band's own<lb />
upbeat sound.<lb />
One of the best things you can<lb />
say about a band is that it is hard to<lb />
classify. The Grateful Dead, The<lb />
Allman Brothers and Blues Traveler<lb />
all bring to mindbothiock'n'roll and<lb />
country. A new soundcheck it.<lb />
'Demolition Man' explores<lb />
future with cliched action, lines<lb />
By Ike Shibley<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
In the year 1996, a cop named<lb />
John Spartan apprehends a notori-<lb />
ous criminal named Simon Phoe-<lb />
nix. In the year 2032,both men meet<lb />
again in a peaceful future not big<lb />
enough for the both of them.<lb />
In Demolition Man, Sylvester<lb />
Stallone plays John Spartan and<lb />
Wesley Snipes plays Simon Phoe-<lb />
nix. The pairing seems destined to<lb />
score huge points with the action<lb />
crowd, and the plot synopsis given<lb />
above is designed todraw in movie-<lb />
goers anxious to see the clash be-<lb />
tween these "sworn enemies<lb />
The film opens with a frenetic<lb />
scene taking place in a dilapidated<lb />
section of Los Angeles whereSimon<lb />
Phoenix holds 30 people hostage.<lb />
JohnSpartan, the "demolition man<lb />
decides to take matters into his own<lb />
hands and single-handedly cap-<lb />
tures Phoenix. In the process of<lb />
bringing Phoenix into custody, an<lb />
entire warehouse explodes and<lb />
crushes the hostages who are still<lb />

FILM<lb />
Continued from page 6<lb />
deal with Phoenix is to than Spar-<lb />
tan.<lb />
Demolition Man tries its best to<lb />
be more than a typical shoot-em-up<lb />
action picture, but aside from a few<lb />
bits of humor, it does not succeed.<lb />
The sets look like they were bor-<lb />
rowed from some futuristic TV<lb />
show, i.e. they look cheap. The dia-<lb />
logue is clunkier man usual in these<lb />
types of pictures and the preposter-<lb />
ousness of the various fist and gun<lb />
battles boggles the imagination.<lb />
The villains in this film areeven<lb />
poorer shots than most bad guys in<lb />
action films. Phoenix has Spartan<lb />
directly in front of him several times<lb />
yet never even wings him. Though<lb />
movie-goers have come to expect<lb />
invincibility in their heroes, the ab-<lb />
surdity of Demolition Man wears<lb />
thin. Why can't the filmmakers just<lb />
avoid giving Phoenix so many<lb />
chances to aim his gun directly at<lb />
Spartan?<lb />
Stallone plays his usual self,<lb />
which is meant as neither criticism<lb />
nor praise. He grunts and slurs<lb />
words and occasionally zips in a<lb />
one-liner, so he gives a performance<lb />
that fits the role. Snipes does little<lb />
more than snarl throughoutthe film.<lb />
He has a limited number of lines<lb />
which results in little character de-<lb />
velopment.<lb />
Plot elements are addressed<lb />
haphazardly in Demolition Man.<lb />
After he is released from cryo-<lb />
prison, Spartan questions the po-<lb />
lice about his wife and daughter.<lb />
They tell Spartan about his wife<lb />
but not his daughter. Once, an of-<lb />
ficer (Sandra Bullock, a former ECU<lb />
student) tries to locate her, butSpar-<lb />
tan stops her because he is not sure<lb />
if he wants to see his little girl in a<lb />
world that he dislikes. His daugh-<lb />
ter is never again mentioned even<lb />
at the end of the film, when the<lb />
future looks to be changing for the<lb />
better.<lb />
Demolition Man does demon-<lb />
strate a pleasant comedic touch<lb />
that distracts the viewer from much<lb />
of the preposterousness taking<lb />
place on screen. Spartan complains<lb />
that he cannot find any toilet pa-<lb />
per, and the entire precinct breaks<lb />
outlaughing,becauseSpartandoes<lb />
not know how to use the "three<lb />
shells Spartan calmly walks to a<lb />
machine that monitors language.<lb />
The machine issues demerits by<lb />
spirting out a sheet of paper for<lb />
every profanity uttered. Spartan<lb />
cursesnon-stop until enough sheets<lb />
have come out to obviate his need<lb />
for toilet paper.<lb />
If Demolition Man teaches any-<lb />
thing about cinema, it is that good<lb />
action pictures are almost as diffi-<lb />
cult to make as good comedies. Paul<lb />
Verhoeven made Total Recall look<lb />
so easy that the audience some-<lb />
times forgets how much artistry is<lb />
involved in crafting iirst-rate fu-<lb />
turistic action picture that is not<lb />
mired in cliches.<lb />
On a scale of one to 10, Demoli-<lb />
tion Man rates a four.<lb />

NEW YORK (AP) The pro-<lb />
ducers of "Scientific American<lb />
Frontiers" got more than they bar-<lb />
gained for in Alan Alda, their host<lb />
for the fourth season of their<lb />
monthly science magazine show<lb />
on PBS.<lb />
"I'm at a point in my life where<lb />
I can do things that are interesting<lb />
to me. I feel it's my reward said<lb />
Alda, a five-rime Emmy winner for<lb />
"M-A-S-H" as actor, writer and<lb />
director.<lb />
On the Oct. 18th season pre-<lb />
miere, titled "Bionics and<lb />
Superhumans Alda gleefully gets<lb />
himself strapped into a mechani-<lb />
cal exoskeleton called a<lb />
"springwalker Lo and behold,<lb />
it's the bionic man!<lb />
Looking like an extra in<lb />
"RoboCop" or "Aliens Alda<lb />
leams how to lope about in the<lb />
device. Its designers hope one day<lb />
to create a powered suit that would<lb />
let humans carry heavy loads over<lb />
rough terrain at 25 mph.<lb />
Alda also visits experimental<lb />
programs for paraplegics. They lit-<lb />
erally plug themselves into por-<lb />
table computers that fire sequences<lb />
of electrical impulses into their<lb />
muscles, letting them stand, walk,<lb />
even climb steps.<lb />
This is still basic research in its<lb />
early stages, but we also get to<lb />
meet people who are direct benefi-<lb />
ciaries of bionics:<lb />
We encounter a man whose<lb />
failing heart is augmented by an<lb />
electric, air-driven pump while he<lb />
awaits a human transplant, and<lb />
another man who "sees" his grand-<lb />
son for the first time through pro-<lb />
totype "electronic glasses" that<lb />
compensate for his visual impair-<lb />
ment.<lb />
"I love science said Alda. "I<lb />
particularly like looking at an as-<lb />
pect of the world through the eyes<lb />
of several different disciplines. That<lb />
gives you a fresh perspective and,<lb />
at the same time, lets you grasp the<lb />
1?ig picture<lb />
The Nov. 3 program moves to<lb />
Germany, where Alda rides the<lb />
autobahn in a car that guides itself<lb />
and examines the problem of recy-<lb />
cling two million Trabants the<lb />
tiny, two-cycle East German cars<lb />
built before reunification.<lb />
December's program looks at<lb />
science-based competitions, includ-<lb />
ing the race across America in solar-<lb />
powered cars; January'sshow looks<lb />
at "rescues" in the natural and<lb />
manmade world, and February's<lb />
looks at the science of baseball.<lb />
Educators should know that<lb />
"Scientific American Frontiers"<lb />
also has a classroom outreach pro-<lb />
gram, giving teachers off-air tap-<lb />
ing rights "in perpetuity<lb />
In addition, teachers' guides<lb />
with reproducible classroom<lb />
activies for each show are avail-<lb />
able.<lb />
Alda says he is intrigued by<lb />
what he calls "the emotive power<lb />
of science and tried to leamabout<lb />
science by reading journals like<lb />
Scientific American for more than<lb />
25 years.<lb />
"For years, science has been<lb />
regarded as dull and nerdy he<lb />
said. "It's almost been a way of<lb />
identifying yourself as an Ameri-<lb />
can to know nothing.<lb />
"I hope this program will help<lb />
communicate that it's stupid to be<lb />
stupid, it's fun to be smart, and it's<lb />

Artist Mark Balma reaches back to Renaissance fresco for meduim<lb />
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) In the<lb />
steel and glass heart of the city, amid<lb />
the glare and glitz of cold, bold build-<lb />
ings, Mark Balma reached back to the<lb />
Renaissance for tools to give form to<lb />
a vision.<lb />
It slowly has taken shape on the<lb />
arched atrium ceiling of the Univer-<lb />
sity of St. Thomas, in the rich earth<lb />
pigments of Michelangelo's era:<lb />
golden ochre from central Europe,<lb />
red sinopia from Greece, black from<lb />
charred grapevine, cobalt blue from<lb />
Germanyallpaintedonplasterrhe<lb />

When it's finished, it will be one<lb />
of the largest public frescoes in the<lb />
United States. Four of seven panels<lb />
spanning the 17-by-112-foot ceiling<lb />
are complete; Balma will return next<lb />
summer to do the last three.<lb />
The $700,000 project is a labor of<lb />
art and spirit for the 36-year-old<lb />
Balma, who grew up in a Minneapo-<lb />
lis suburb and lives near Assisi, Italy.<lb />
He's oneof a handful of artists work-<lb />
ing in an ancient medium known as<lb />
the mother of all painting.<lb />
Like fresco masters of the Re-<lb />
naissance, he's using the form to con-<lb />
vey a spiritual messagein this case,<lb />
the seven virtues outlined by univer-<lb />
sity namesakeStThomasof Aquinas:<lb />
faith, justice, prudence, hope, tem-<lb />
perance, fortitude and charity.<lb />
The finished panels representan<lb />
eclectic blend of religious traditions.<lb />
A turtle symbol of the Earth in<lb />
American Indian spirituality car-<lb />

picting creation, or faith. A scholar<lb />

illustrating prudence. A young<lb />
woman raises a baby skyward, to-<lb />

of hope.<lb />
"Because frescoes are a commu-<lb />
nicating and enduring art form, you<lb />

spent two years designing and revis-<lb />
ing the fresco before he first put plas-<lb />

In fresco "fresh" in Italian<lb />
hand-groundpigmentsareappliedto<lb />
wetplaster mixed with lime. If all goes<lb />
well, the colors become a permanent<lb />
part of the surface: they're literally set<lb />
in stone. The only way an artist can<lb />
change the image is to chip it off and<lb />
start again.<lb />
With his bushy beard, Balma at<lb />
work evokes a Renaissance artist; he<lb />
lacks only a smock and tights to re-<lb />
place his paint-speckled white shirt,<lb />
black Levi's and si'spenders. He is<lb />
dong what he always has wanted to<lb />
do, what he has done since he was a<lb />
boy who drew the Beatles on his bed-<lb />
room walls rather than hanging post-<lb />
matter what it took<lb />
It took hours of pounding the<lb />
pavement, a portfolio of portraits<lb />
under his arm, before one gallery<lb />

in Milan later that year brought in<lb />
more portrait commissions.<lb />
ers.<lb />
At 15, Balma began an appren-<lb />
ticeship tohonehisdrawing andpaint-<lb />
ing skills.<lb />
In 1980, he went to Italy to ap-<lb />
prentice under master fresco artist<lb />
Pietro Annigoni.<lb />
"I wanted to just gostand in front<lb />
of a painting from the 14th century<lb />

So far this season things have<lb />

on both sidesof the ball have slowed<lb />
the team toa2-4 record justover half-<lb />

are a team. We still have some games<lb />
left this year. I think that it's very<lb />
important to have a winning season<lb />
this year, especially in terms of re-<lb />
cruiting. It's no fun being in a losing<lb />
season. Last year was probably my<lb />
first losing season since little league.<lb />
Recruits look to see if a<lb />

One of the biggest<lb />
adjustments that Letcher<lb />

After an injury put<lb />
Marcus Crandell out for<lb />

27,103 (estimated) saw the East<lb />
Carolina Pirates defeat the Bull-<lb />
dogs of Louisiana Tech 31-28 on<lb />
Saturday at Ficklen stadium. Mak-<lb />
ing his first collegiate start for the<lb />
Pirates was true freshman Perez<lb />
Mattison, who was called to re-<lb />
place starter Chris Hester. Hester<lb />
will likely miss the rest of the sea-<lb />
son due to surgery on his thumb.<lb />
The win moves the Pirates<lb />
record to 2-4 on the season, but to<lb />
head coach Steve Logan this game<lb />
was a crucial stepping-stone for<lb />
ECU football.<lb />
"It would have been nice to go<lb />
out there and win this game 40-to-<lb />
nothing today Logan said. "After<lb />
the game I told my team that I was<lb />
glad to win the way we did. We<lb />
could have folded, but we played<lb />
hard. This game could really start<lb />
us in the right direction. After ev-<lb />
ery loss this season, I've said that<lb />
what's inside these kids is good.<lb />
This victory rewards their efforts<lb />
The Pirates received the open-<lb />
ing kick-off and started their first<lb />
drive of the game with a disap-<lb />
pointing three-and-out. A short<lb />
pun t by Bill Wilson gave the Bull-<lb />
dogs good field position to start<lb />
their first drive. On their third<lb />
play from scrimmage, Tech run-<lb />
ning back Jason Cooper ran wide<lb />
left past the ECU defense and<lb />
into the end zone.<lb />
With the Bulldogs gaining<lb />
the early 7-0 lead, it was time for<lb />
Mattison to step up and lead the<lb />
offense. Mattison led the Pirates<lb />
down the field with the help of a<lb />
high catch by sophomore half-<lb />
back Jerris McPhail to give ECU<lb />
the first down. After a 27-yard<lb />
completion by wide-out Morris<lb />
Letcher, the rest was up to run-<lb />
ning back Junior Smith. Smith<lb />
ca ught a 26-yard gain on a screen<lb />
pass to put the Pirates in scoring<lb />
position, and, on first and goal<lb />
from the seven, Smith followed a<lb />
key block by offensive tackle Ken<lb />
Carroll to find the end zone.<lb />
The Bulldogs ran the kick-<lb />
off back to their own 38-yard line<lb />
after poor coverage from special<lb />
teams. ECU got a big play on<lb />
second-and-six, whenTechquar-<lb />
terback Jason Martin threw an<lb />
interception to linebacker Reggie<lb />
Robinson, who ran the ball back<lb />

did not quit. After coming hack<lb />
to tie the score at 14, the Rams<lb />
kept the pressure on, and came<lb />
through at the end to win the<lb />
game 16-14. The match was tied<lb />
at one game each.<lb />
In game three, the Pirates<lb />
were obviously down from los-<lb />
ing the prior game. It showed as<lb />
VCU jumped on the Pirates from<lb />
the start, taking an early 9-2 lead.<lb />
The Rams controlled the entire<lb />
tempo of the game. Losing 13-5,<lb />
ECU called a time-out to try to<lb />
putsomething together, but it was<lb />
toolate. The Rams won in a romp,<lb />
15-5. Virginia Commonwealth<lb />
now led two games to one.<lb />
The Pirates came back to life<lb />
in game four. It wasa hard fought<lb />
game by both teams. The Pirates<lb />
play was sparked by outside hit-<lb />
ter MelanieRichards, who helped<lb />
keep the team focused duringthe<lb />
game. With the score tied at 12,<lb />
ECU applied pressure. The Pi-<lb />
rates dominated the net and<lb />
jumped ahead of the Rams to take<lb />
game four 15-13.<lb />
The scene was set for a dra-<lb />
matic game five. Tied at two, both<lb />
teams were obviously playing on<lb />
adrenaline alone. VCU played<lb />
tough early, getting a 6-1 lead.<lb />
fhis caused the Pirates to play<lb />
G i ten- up the rest of the game. East<lb />
Carolina rallied back, scoringsix<lb />
straight points to take the lead, 7-<lb />
6. A time-out called by the Rams<lb />
gave Kith teams a chance to get<lb />
ready for the final stretch.<lb />
In an extremely action-<lb />
packed game, the Pirates got great<lb />
play again from Brne, who helped<lb />
ECU get a 12-10 lead. Chances to<lb />
put the game away were blown<lb />
three straight times by ECU, who<lb />
failed to execute on serves when<lb />
it counted. The Rams capitalized<lb />
on the errors, and brought the<lb />
score back to 12-11. ECU called a<lb />
time-out with their one-point<lb />
lead. With two very questionable<lb />
net calls by the officials, VCU<lb />
moved out in front to 13-12. The<lb />
Pirates didn't cave in though.<lb />
They roared back to tie the game<lb />
at 13.<lb />
ECU got the break they<lb />
needed, and with game-point on<lb />
the I ine, the Pi rates' Gwynn Baber<lb />
served what appeared to be the<lb />
game-winning point.<lb />
A call from the official said<lb />
otherwise, saying that an ECU<lb />
player was touching the net. At<lb />
14-13, Richards took control and<lb />
got a spike which gave the Pi-<lb />
rates a 15-13 win and the match.<lb />

ECU continued its abysmal<lb />

Eventually I just liked football more<lb />
than anything else. You know, as a<lb />
kid you'll fantasize about playing.<lb />
You will be out there in the yard<lb />

you're Lynn Swann. Yeah, I d id that,<lb />

For now, with Letcher's final<lb />

onfootball.Itisontbiefield that Letcher<lb />
has garnered the reputation as a per-<lb />

Letcher said. "I'm able to bounce up<lb />

life that I have been playing football,<lb />
I've been bruised up here and there<lb />
and just been able to play with the<lb />
pain. Fortunately, I've just been<lb />
