Civil suit filed in fight case<lb />

One ECU student faces<lb />
criminal charges and a civil suit<lb />
and another student has with-<lb />
drawn from school following a<lb />
brawl at the ECU Syracuse game<lb />
held Thursday, Sept. 9.<lb />
ECU student Daniel Mar-<lb />
tin haspressed chargesagainst tified as a participant in the fight<lb />
nan Weaver after Martin was According to Carnes, university<lb />
A week later, Weaver was<lb />
taken into custody based on<lb />
Martin's civil claim and was held<lb />
under $50,000 bond. The civil ac-<lb />
tion seeks more than $10,000 in<lb />
compensatory and punitive dam-<lb />
ages.<lb />
Senior Michael Carnes, 23,<lb />
withdrew from school for "per-<lb />
sonal reasons" after he was iden-<lb />
punched in the face and left un-<lb />
conscious in the stadium stands.<lb />
Martin was taken to Pitt County<lb />
Memorial Hospital, treated and<lb />
released.<lb />
Later Thursday night,<lb />
Weaver was arrested and charged<lb />
with assault inflicting serious in-<lb />
jury. He was released that night<lb />
under $200 bond.<lb />
officials were warned that there<lb />
was trouble in the stands, but they<lb />
failed to intervene before the fight<lb />
occurred. Carnes said the officer<lb />
told a friend, whom he would not<lb />
identify, "Take care of it your-<lb />
self<lb />
Later, according to Carnes,<lb />
a video tape of the fight showed<lb />
Carnes' friend saying "I told you<lb />
so; I told you there was going to<lb />
be trouble<lb />
Chancellor Eakin did not<lb />
notice the conversation between<lb />
the officer and Carnes' friend.<lb />
"I don't recall that particu-<lb />
lar event in the video Eakin said.<lb />
"Most of my attention was di-<lb />
rected to the violence Eakin also<lb />
said that even if that happened,<lb />
the violence in the stands was not<lb />
justified.<lb />
According to Vice Chancel-<lb />
lor Richard Brown, Saturday's<lb />
gameagainstCentral Florida went<lb />
much more smoothly than the<lb />
previous game.<lb />
"I spent quite a bit of time<lb />
personally observing gates, but<lb />
aside from one individual who<lb />
brought alcohol in fake binocu-<lb />
lars, I did not see one instance of<lb />
inappropriate behavior Brown<lb />
said. Brown added that he had no<lb />
reports of problems on either side<lb />
of the stadium.<lb />
"The behavior in the stands<lb />
could not have been better he<lb />
said.<lb />
The two fraternities in-<lb />
volved in the fighting in the<lb />
stands, Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma<lb />
Tau Gamma, are being reviewed<lb />
in front of the Interfraternity<lb />
Council (IFC).<lb />
Pi Kappa Alpha has already<lb />
been banned from campus activi-<lb />
ties by the university.<lb />
The worst punishment pos-<lb />
sible for the groups by the IFC is<lb />
having their charter revoked. This<lb />
would result in the university no<lb />
longer recognizing the group as a<lb />
fraternity.<lb />

wants you to sharpen your de-<lb />

new ECU Forensics Society.<lb />
Boyd is trying to revive the<lb />
Forensics Society, the debate<lb />
club that was active on campus<lb />
until 1989. The group will hold<lb />
its inaugural meeting Wednes-<lb />
day, Sept. 22, from 7-8 p.m. in<lb />
room 212 in Mendenhall Student<lb />
Center.<lb />
"Considering the size of the<lb />
pool of talent at this university<lb />
and the fact that all other schools<lb />
of comparable size have them, I<lb />
think ECU deserves a debate<lb />
team Boyd said.<lb />
The team will compete in<lb />
two categories of debate par-<lb />

Parliamentary debate consists of<lb />
two-man teams that propose and<lb />
defend different positions. Fo-<lb />
rensics is a more general cat-<lb />

riety of techniques.<lb />
"I'd like to thank Doug<lb />
Kern, a world-ranked debater at<lb />
Princeton for helping me intro-<lb />
duce parliamentary debate to the<lb />
university Boyd said.<lb />
Boyd said he expects the<lb />
team to compete in events<lb />
around the area with local<lb />
schools as well as participate in<lb />
some larger debate competi-<lb />
tions.<lb />
"We plan to compete<lb />
heavily in local and regional<lb />
competitions with schools from<lb />
North Carolina and the ACC<lb />
schools. We also would like to<lb />
participate in two or three of the<lb />
big parliamentary debate com-<lb />

would face schools like Harvard,<lb />

Staff Writer<lb />
Andrew Parker Davis, a<lb />
senior at East Carolina Univer-<lb />

attend Bermuda College<lb />
through study abroad.<lb />
Davis is a psychology<lb />
major, with a minor in leisure<lb />
systems studies, and hehascho-<lb />

career. Although it is a two-<lb />
year school, Davis chose Ber-<lb />

hotel and business administra-<lb />

major programs at the college.<lb />
Davis is the son of Fred<lb />
Davis and of<lb />
Pam and Jim<lb />
Mullen, all of<lb />
Greenville.<lb />
According to<lb />
Pam Mullen,<lb />
Davis is en-<lb />

taking the fol-<lb />

can not work<lb />
because you<lb />
have to be a<lb />

"Just what are you doing with your life, anyway?"<lb />
Fighting, over-consumption of<lb />
alcohol at SU game presents an<lb />
unfair portrayal of the real ECU fan<lb />
We're not trying to beat a dead horse. Honest.<lb />
The consequences of last week's fighting a t the ECU-<lb />
Syracuse game will be felt for a long time. And not<lb />
because the media is forcing its longevity. Contrary to<lb />
popular belief, it has nothing to do with us; rather, it<lb />
lingers in the conversations at Mendenhall, in the Letters<lb />
to the Editor and in the much-needed disciplinary meet-<lb />
ings.<lb />
We, the media, are here to present an objective<lb />
overview of the situation and to offer a few solutions.<lb />
Then, and onlv then, can the controversy and rumors be<lb />
put to rest.<lb />
For the few people that have no clue as to the<lb />
incident that occurred on Sept. 9, we will expound. Vari-<lb />
ous members of Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Tau Gamma<lb />
fraternities were involved in a fight at the ECU-Syracuse<lb />
football game, held at Ficklen Stadium. Although inves-<lb />
tigations are still pending with the Interfraternity Council<lb />
(IFC), ECU suspended Pi Kappa Alpha from participat-<lb />
ing in activities on campus. No action was taken against<lb />
Sigma Tau Gamma. The IFC will now determine if Pi<lb />
Kappa Alpha will have their charter revoked.<lb />
There were 46 rows of bleachers damaged during<lb />
the game. The cost of repairing the bleachers before this<lb />
past weekend's game against Central Florida stands at<lb />
$6,200. The damage to the bleachers did not occur in just<lb />
the fight section, but also in group seating.<lb />
This brings us to our first point. The reckless over-<lb />
consumption of alcohol (legal or illegal) is the primary<lb />
component in problems that occurred during the game.<lb />
Whether anyone wants to admit it or bring it into focus,<lb />
this university has always had a problem with controlling<lb />
substance abuse. Especially during sporting events. And<lb />
it always seems to be a problem that is dealt with after the<lb />
fact. Thorough, viable options for the cessation of prob-<lb />
lems in the future usually don't see the light of day.<lb />
Our second point: this is not to say that people<lb />
haven't tried. What happens is that a solution is offered,<lb />
everyone gets really enthusiastic about solving the ills of<lb />
the university, and then when they try and fail, the issue<lb />
gets put on the back burner until the next time it occurs<lb />
Well, we're now asking the ECU community one<lb />
simple thing: to listen. Listen to a group of people who<lb />
would like to see the end of stadium fighting, alcohol<lb />
over-consumption and bad press. The Editorial Board of<lb />
The East Carolinian believes with strong conviction that<lb />
ECU never has to see another incident like the one at the<lb />
SU football game happen again.<lb />
We recommend that the controls that were enacted<lb />
for this past weekend's game be in effect throughout the<lb />
season and into the future. This means no group seating,<lb />
extra security personnel and a point-of-stadium entry<lb />
inspection. Those in possession of alcohol at that time<lb />
would not be allowed to enter the stadium.<lb />
In addition to this, we recommend that since ECU is<lb />
one of a handful of universities that has a section on<lb />
campus property for tailgating, that alcohol be strictly<lb />
limited, if not altogether prohibited, for questions of<lb />
liability.<lb />
The use of alcohol, when abused, has no place at a<lb />
sporting event. Most of the fans that were consuming<lb />
alcohol were not old enough to legally purchase it. And if<lb />
you're too drunk to stand up, then you certainly don't<lb />
belong at a football game. You should be there to support<lb />
your team and to enjoy the event.<lb />
Last week's incident hurt a lot of people, most im-<lb />
portant of whom are the ECU Pirates. If anyone is listen-<lb />
ing, make some real changes for them. Maybe then we can<lb />
honestly talk about the meaning of "Pirate Pride<lb />

It is a question that has<lb />
plagued the sanity of college stu-<lb />
dents for ages, of that I am sure.<lb />
It's uses are unlimited: as a pick-<lb />
up line, an ice breaker at parties<lb />
and social gatherings, conversa-<lb />
tion stimulators, fill-ins for those<lb />
awkward momentsof silence. the<lb />
list goes on and on. It's the cattle<lb />
prod of progress that parents,<lb />
teachers and fellow colleagues<lb />
use to jolt you in the backside.<lb />
And during your final years of<lb />
college, this question is repeated<lb />
more often than old episodes of<lb />
The Cosby Shoiv. The question is:<lb />
"What are you going to do with<lb />
yourlife?"(Tobereadinawhiny,<lb />
nasal tone.)<lb />
Eeeeeeee-yuck. The words<lb />
alone make one's insides flop<lb />
with an abdominal squelch. The<lb />
meaning behind these words can<lb />
range from indifference to fanati-<lb />
cal devotion that may border on<lb />
molestation. Everyone, from<lb />
your Aunt Bertha (who remem-<lb />
bers when you were only this<lb />
high, you sweet little thang) to<lb />
the neighbors next door, will at<lb />
one time or another corner and<lb />
coddle you with small talk to<lb />
weaken your defenses. And then,<lb />
with your mind in a whirl, deliri-<lb />
ous with the deluge of questions<lb />
concerning classes, who you're<lb />
dating and your next haircut ap-<lb />
pointment, they swoop down<lb />
and plant the bomb.<lb />
"What are you going to do<lb />
with your life?" (Don't forget that<lb />
whiny, nasal tone.)<lb />
And if that isn't enough to<lb />
make you abandon all thoughts<lb />
of a career and take up needle-<lb />
point with the other loonies in<lb />
Belvue, here's one to really get<lb />
the ole self-esteem rocking. It's a<lb />
variation of the original that<lb />
smacks of hidden objectives, like<lb />
cynicism and sarcasm. How<lb />
many of you have been ap-<lb />
proached with this one?: "Well,<lb />
what are you going to do with<lb />
your life once you decide to grow<lb />
up? (Whiny tone, touch of su-<lb />
periority now.)<lb />
As E.T. so eloquently put it,<lb />
"Ouch<lb />
Oh, how I long to jump up<lb />
and yell in their faces. Tell them<lb />
I'm considering the field of axe<lb />
murdering and how I'd like to<lb />
use them as my first test subject.<lb />
Tell them I'm taking up Interna-<lb />
tional Terrorism and I'll have to<lb />
dispose of them for fear of giv-<lb />
ing away my identity. Tell them<lb />
anything, but just tell them off.<lb />
When I was younger and<lb />
asked about my career goals, I<lb />
thought little of it, just that it was<lb />
polite and a tad bit nosy for them<lb />
to be interrogating me. Now,<lb />
when people put The Question<lb />
to me, I feel like putting my hands<lb />
to my ears and screaming (like<lb />
Dustin Hoffman in Rainman<lb />
when he was in the airport), in<lb />
hopes of blocking out the inces-<lb />
sant chatter. Better yet, hitting<lb />
the accursed over the head with<lb />
a sock full of pebbles would cer-<lb />
tainly be a possibility. More grati-<lb />
fying to say the least.<lb />
At any rate, whatever my<lb />
choice of violent response, the<lb />
emotional status remains the<lb />
same. I can't speak for everyone,<lb />
but my indecision concerning my<lb />
purpose or lack of one terrifies<lb />
me. I have such hard feelings<lb />
towards people questioning<lb />
my future career choices<lb />
mainly because I'm already<lb />
pre-occupied with deciding<lb />
my goals.<lb />
And I'm not alone. Mil-<lb />
lions of students today worry<lb />
about what's ahead. Jobs aren't<lb />
a dime a dozen any more and<lb />
often the correct procedures to<lb />
get where you need to go are<lb />
hidden from view. And the last<lb />
thing we need are little remind-<lb />
ers popping up, reminding us<lb />
to get a life. As if we didn't<lb />
know.<lb />
So until we find our niche<lb />
in life, we'll continue the battle<lb />
of control. We'll rein in the<lb />
urge to pound the bejeezus out<lb />
of the ignoramuses who con-<lb />
tinue to poke and prod at our<lb />
indecision. And when they ask<lb />
what I plan to do with my life,<lb />
I can at least say I have one to<lb />
work with, and the opportu-<lb />
nity to actively influence its<lb />
outcome.<lb />
Letters to the Editor<lb />
Inappropriate actions at game disappoint fans<lb />
To the Editor:<lb />
Never before have I<lb />
been so amazed, amused, an-<lb />
noyed, angry, abused and fi-<lb />
nally, maybe apathetic (I guess<lb />
that takes care of the A's). I was<lb />
bumped, bruised, banged, bad-<lb />
gered, bemused, befuddled and<lb />
bitched at (so muchfor the letter<lb />
B). This brings me to my point-<lb />
(the letter C)confused and<lb />
concerned. To what am I refer-<lb />
ring? The football game Thurs-<lb />
day night against Syracuse and<lb />
the ECU student population.<lb />
In the spirit of "Purple<lb />
Pride I anxiously looked for-<lb />
ward to my first opportunity to<lb />
attend a football game. I stood<lb />
in line, got my ticket, arrived<lb />
early and found my seat. While<lb />
the pre-game festivities were<lb />
pleasant, I was appalled (another<lb />
A) at the conduct of my fellow<lb />
students during the "Star<lb />
Spangled Banner Surely, all<lb />
students, being high school<lb />
graduates, must know it is ap-<lb />
propriate to stand and if noth-<lb />
ing else, be silent during the<lb />
performance of our national an-<lb />
them. What I experienced was<lb />
cursing, drinking and shouting<lb />
until at last a TV camera was<lb />
pointed in our direction. Finally<lb />
the crowd rallied and sang the<lb />
final strains "and the home of<lb />
the brave Who says we aren't<lb />
media conscious? This was the<lb />
start of the end.<lb />
Although I had a ticket<lb />
with a seat number and a sec-<lb />
tion and row designation, I was<lb />
systematically shoved, shouted<lb />
at and sweared at until I ended<lb />
up in a completely different sec-<lb />
tion. Where was the usher? He<lb />
was three sections away trying<lb />
to restore order. At this point I<lb />
call it a little too late. If tickets are<lb />
too be given out, yea, even sold,<lb />
shouldn't someone take respon-<lb />
sibility for seeing that proper<lb />
seating is enforced? I doubt Sol-<lb />
dier Field in Chicago experi-<lb />
ences the same problem. I left<lb />
the stands and went below to<lb />
where the real game, the game<lb />
of reality, was being played. I<lb />
spentthe rest of the game watch-<lb />
ing the ambulances come and<lb />
go and the drunks stagger out.<lb />
This brings me to my final point.<lb />
I am concerned with<lb />
the conduct and image of our<lb />
university and its students.<lb />
Okay, so we have some semi-<lb />
reputation to uphold as a "Party<lb />
School Great, I love to tailgate.<lb />
I even indulge in drinking. My<lb />
priority is not to get so blitzed<lb />
that I am rude, unpleasant and<lb />
ignorant about common cour-<lb />
tesy. Is this what school spirit is<lb />
all about? I don't think so. I am<lb />
concerned that our campus se-<lb />
curity is so diligent in checking<lb />
for parking stickers and yet so<lb />
completely blind to the stagger-<lb />
ing amount of alcohol in the<lb />
stands. I am concerned about<lb />
the campus newspaper's over-<lb />
emphasis on banning the kegs.<lb />
This is not oppression; it is the<lb />
law for most of us. Did anyone<lb />
see a shortage of alcohol or<lb />
drunks at the game? NOT.<lb />
While I am at it, just what IS the<lb />
legal drinking age anyway?<lb />
(Never mind, just kidding)<lb />
Suffice it to say, I had<lb />
a negative experience. While this<lb />
unfortunate episode will not<lb />
diminish my support of the Pi-<lb />
rates and ECU, I will be a little<lb />
quieterwhenmyfriendsatState<lb />
and Carolina rib me about our<lb />
"Party Hardy" reputation and<lb />
the reasons we don't play<lb />
against each other. I would,<lb />
however, hope that someone<lb />
somewhere will reconsider their<lb />
inappropriate actions next time<lb />
they attend a football game. We<lb />
expect 3 and 4 year-olds to say<lb />
"please "thank-you" and "ex-<lb />
cuse me Is that too much to<lb />
ask of a college student wearing<lb />
purple and gold?<lb />

Retro-mania:<lb />
the hip disease<lb />
of the 90's<lb />
Editor's note: In keeping with the retro-<lb />
craze, this column is being reprinted from<lb />
last semester. Our sincerest apologies. (But<lb />
read it anyway! You '11 be glad ya did!)<lb />
Sometime in the last 10 years, some-<lb />
one decided to put our culture into con-<lb />
stant retro and now we dwell in nostalgic<lb />
kitch. It's annoying. Most of our society<lb />
either refers or steals from the past 30<lb />
years.<lb />
Our popular music is a rehash jam-<lb />
boree that nods with affection or non-<lb />
creative envy at the blues-inspired swag-<lb />
ger of the '60s (Black Crowes, Ju-ju<lb />
Hounds) or at the shallow pap of the '70s<lb />
(the return of disco via Whitney Houston<lb />
and a plethora of Top 40 songs). Remem-<lb />
ber the Dirty Dancing craze?<lb />
Some of the homage is done with<lb />
sincere appreciation of respected works<lb />
(most beer commercials apply). Some is<lb />
in subtle or blatant mocking; Faith No<lb />
More covered The Commodore's "Easy"<lb />
and some thrash band did a rendition of<lb />
Air Supply's "Making Love Out of Noth-<lb />
ing At All Also there is Ugly Kid Joe<lb />
demolishing "Cat's In the Cradle" and<lb />
Michael Bolton (pick one) for whom death<lb />
itself is too good a punishment.<lb />
There's the hip fashions. USA TO-<lb />
DAY reported that the trends from Eu-<lb />
rope for Fall '93 would be "part '70s, part<lb />
swashbuckler, part Edwardian dandy<lb />
Yes, ladies, now you can freely admit that<lb />
the man of your dreams is a lanky, un-<lb />
washed fop in a poet shirt with the God-<lb />
help-us bell-bottoms that somehow<lb />
avoided bonfires in the '80s.<lb />
Even tattoos are the rage again,<lb />
which causes flashbacks of either "Fan-<lb />
tasy Island" or Schneider from "One Day<lb />
At A Time<lb />
These examples may seem trivial,<lb />
but at college, what else is there to put<lb />
effort into during personal time? Sure,<lb />
there's the pursuit of the opposite sex, but<lb />
what is she wearing? What are they<lb />
listening to at the clubs? Even recreational<lb />
drugs of choice on campuses across the<lb />
nation are the "old standards" mari-<lb />
juana, mushrooms and LSD. Everything<lb />
old is new again.<lb />
Diet Coke used stunning effects to<lb />
allow Paula Abdul to perform with Louie<lb />
Armstrong, Groucho Marx and<lb />
Humphrey Bogart. Do we need to be<lb />
entertained with plagiarized film clips of<lb />
dead entertainers in order to sell carbon-<lb />
ated syrup? More importantly, do we<lb />
need Paula Abdul?<lb />
We seem to be lost in a Jim Beam<lb />
magazine ad where our bathing suits,<lb />
Christmas trees and road signs reflect our<lb />
desire to "return to the basics Do we<lb />
tend to look upon the good old days with<lb />
too much enthusiasm? Are we losing our<lb />
originality to trends and nostalgia? It<lb />
seems too soon to write off progress en-<lb />
tirely.<lb />
And whose bright idea was it to<lb />
make The Brady Bunch cool again?<lb />

The band Widespread Panic<lb />
will be making their second ap-<lb />

night. They have a new release<lb />
called Everyday, and they have<lb />
just completed a successful<lb />
H.O.R.D.E. tour performing with<lb />
bands like Blues Traveler and<lb />
Phish. Widespread Panic has a<lb />
distinctive sound like no other<lb />
band. They have been described<lb />
by The Boston Globe as having "a<lb />

Answered by Jennifer Philips, Student Health Service<lb />
Question: What is jock itch<lb />
anyway?<lb />
Answer: The medical term<lb />
for "jock itch" is tinea cruris, a<lb />
fungal infection of the pu-<lb />
bic region. This type<lb />
of infection is more y<lb />
common among<lb />
majes than fe- .<lb />
males and it is<lb />
usually aggra- <lb />
vated by friction<lb />
and moisture. The 9<lb />
fungus frequently J<lb />
grows on athletic sup-<lb />
porters that have not been<lb />
washed.<lb />
Jock itch is characterized<lb />
by redness, oozing or some pe-<lb />
ripheral scaling and itching.<lb />
The symptoms of jock itch can<lb />
be minirnized by wearing boxer-<lb />
type shorts as opposed to close-<lb />
fitting shorts or jockey briefs.<lb />
The application of pow-<lb />
 i der to the infected<lb />
 area is often recom-<lb />
mended. Soiled or<lb />

Thumbs down for 'Blues'<lb />
By Ike Shibley<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Undercover Blues is a new movie<lb />
starring Kathleen Turner and Den-<lb />
nis Quaid. Both stars desperately<lb />
need a hit film to buoy their failing<lb />
careers. Undercover Blues is as far<lb />
from a hit as one could imagine.<lb />
Undercover Blues tells the tale<lb />
of Jane (Kathleen Turner) and Jeff<lb />
(Dennis Quaid) Blue, government<lb />
agents married to each other and<lb />
the proud parents of a little girl.<lb />
Both parents want time off to raise<lb />
their baby, Jane Louise (or Louise<lb />
Jane since the parents cannot agree<lb />
on the order of the names).<lb />
The running joke about the<lb />
baby's name is one of many con-<lb />
tinuing gags in Undercover Blues<lb />
thatelicits no laughter. Like almost<lb />
every joke in this boring film, this<lb />
joke is played as being exquisitely<lb />
cute, though it exhibits neither wit<lb />
nor wile.<lb />
As the film opens, Jane and<lb />
Jeff are seen at a party. Only later<lb />
does the viewer learn that they<lb />
only showed up to eat; they did<lb />
not even know who threw the<lb />
party. Their brash behavior indi-<lb />
cates the intellect of these two<lb />
agents. Jane and Jeff act smugly in<lb />
every situation so that after 10 min-<lb />
utes of film, I was tired of them.<lb />
Their sophomoric sense of humor<lb />
grates harshly upon the viewer.<lb />
The music is justplain terrible.<lb />
The most interesting part of this<lb />
cinema tic experience is seeing what<lb />
type of obvious soundtrack<lb />
rhythms would accompany the ac-<lb />
tion on the screen. Stealthy music<lb />
pulses while Jeff walks down a<lb />
dark alley; emotionally nauseat-<lb />
ing music wails while Jane tells<lb />
Jeff to be careful before he departs<lb />
for a dangerous rendezvous; and<lb />
jazz music shows up everywhere<lb />
else, since the tale unfolds in New<lb />
Orleans.<lb />
Just for fun (and out of sheer<lb />
boredom), I counted the number<lb />
of bands that appeared on screen.<lb />
To beat boredom in class, I re-<lb />
member counting the times some<lb />
teachers would say "urn and the<lb />
feeling during the film was simi-<lb />
lar. I found at least five instances<lb />
where musicians appeared on the<lb />
screen: in nightclubs, parades,<lb />
funeral processions and on street<lb />
corners. I suppose the film mak-<lb />
ers really wanted to get the idea<lb />
across that New Orleans is a city<lb />
filled with music. Either that or<lb />

Wilmington, N. C.To kick<lb />
off the 1993-94 "Thalian Hall Pre-<lb />

has cooked up an evening that's<lb />
easy on the pocketbook and "Big<lb />
Easy" in style. The evening be-<lb />
gins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept.<lb />
23 at Thalian Hall with a concert<lb />
by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.<lb />
Direct from New Orleans, the<lb />
Dozen will dish out a potent mix<lb />
of jumping jazz, featuring music<lb />
from their latest Columbia re-<lb />
lease, Jelly, celebrating the music<lb />
of Jelly Roll Morton. After the<lb />
concert, roll on down to the Pilot<lb />
House where era wdads and more<lb />

cash bar will be available.<lb />
From the most prestigious<lb />
jazz festivals here and abroad,<lb />
from the Far East to the Midwest,<lb />
the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is<lb />
constantly on the road playing<lb />
their irresistible brand of New<lb />
Orleans music. The London Times<lb />
heralds the group as "one of the<lb />
two or three most enthralling jazz<lb />
acts in the world<lb />
The eight piece band takes its<lb />
name from the Dirty Dozen So-<lb />
cial and Pleasure Club, a descen-<lb />
dent of one of New Orleans his-<lb />
toric black "sou sous" or burial<lb />
societies. In recent times, the sou<lb />
sous have become pleasure clubs<lb />
and places where great music of<lb />
the city is perpetuated. The Dirty<lb />
Dozen Brass Band was born in<lb />
just such a club, created to keep<lb />
the city's dying funeral and<lb />
marching band tradition alive<lb />
while injecting fresh young tal-<lb />
ent and ideas into the these tradi-<lb />
tions.<lb />
In style, the band takes a mod-<lb />
ern attitude and combines it with<lb />
historic roots, adding bop, funk<lb />
and rhythm and blues to the<lb />
steamy mix of music that they<lb />
create. In concert, they'll move<lb />
fiom a street march to a soulful<lb />
ballad and finish off with a<lb />
bopping jazz romp. Overlaying<lb />
their performance is pure joy in<lb />
their music-making.<lb />
The band's eclectic appeal has<lb />

came to the Attic in Greenville,<lb />
everyone I talked to said it was<lb />
one of the best shows they had<lb />
ever been to. This year should<lb />
be even better with their new<lb />
album and gained experience<lb />
from the H.O.R.D.E. Festival.<lb />
The band enjoys playing on<lb />
the big national circuit, but they<lb />
seem to really like going back<lb />
and playing for small towns like<lb />
Greenville. John Bell says, "Play-<lb />
ing live for a different city each<lb />

shows flashes of genius, and I think<lb />
he too will one day be a superstar<lb />
(bytheway,that'sSlyStone,notSly<lb />

The album contains 23 tracks,<lb />
ranging from a few seconds to al-<lb />

ziness here and there. Foley mixes<lb />
a lot of modes in the tunes, some-<lb />
times dialogue, sometimes an in-<lb />

it all works together to create a<lb />
context from which to blast the so-<lb />

"Ain't No Class (N Da Middle)<lb />

"The Man and "Cum 'Round<lb />

"Better Not Die (N Amerika<lb />

nnis Quaid has always<lb />
proved annoying as an actor. His<lb />
cocky brashness seems to derive<lb />
more from conceit than good-<lb />
hearted bragging. His characters<lb />
continually grate on one's nerves.<lb />
He has never made a blockbuster<lb />
film mostly because he possesses<lb />
no charm as an actor.<lb />
Though he has made a few<lb />
vvatchable films, their success has<lb />
come about more in spite of than<lb />
because of Quaid.<lb />
Quaid's character in Under-<lb />
cover Blues displays exaggerated<lb />
conceit. A New Orleans police lieu-<lb />
tenant says at one point: "I hate<lb />
him. I really hate him I agree.<lb />
Kathleen Turner once made a<lb />
nation of cinema-goers turn its<lb />
head. Lately, mostof her films have<lb />
only turned stomachs. Her choice<lb />
of roles has been ill-advised since<lb />
1989's War of the Roses. The only<lb />
one of several films she has made<lb />
since then that I even remember<lb />
opening in theaters was V. I.<lb />
Warshawski, which closed almost<lb />
immediately after it opened.<lb />
Her work in Undercover Blues<lb />
shows off the same smart, sexy and<lb />
defiantTurner of Prizzi's Honor and<lb />
Body Heat, but the script gives her<lb />
nothing to say and little to do. This<lb />
film will move quickly to the back<lb />
of the video shelf along with all of<lb />
her other recent work.<lb />
One continuing joke in Under-<lb />
cover Blues provides some amuse-<lb />
ment if only because it gets carried<lb />
on way too long. Early in the film, a<lb />
crook who calls himself M uerte tries<lb />
to mug Jeff. Jeff quickly dispenses<lb />
of him with a baby stroller while he<lb />
holds his infant. If this is your idea<lb />
of a funny plot contrivance, you<lb />
may just like the film since most of<lb />
it is like this.<lb />
The assailant vows to kill Jeff<lb />
and continues trying to do so until<lb />
the closing credits. When Jane asks<lb />
about Muerte after Jeff encounters<lb />
him while he is out shopping, Jeff<lb />
tells her that "he could be useful<lb />
The director, Herbert Ross, obvi-<lb />
ously felt so too, since he has Muerte<lb />
show up in almost every scene.<lb />
Undercover Blues offers nothing<lb />
to its audience, not wit, humor, sus-<lb />
pense, good family funnothing. It<lb />
has a wafer-thin plot with uninter-<lb />
esting characters. As for Turner and<lb />
Quaid, they had better hope for bet-<lb />
ter scripts, because if they keep<lb />
making garbage like this, they soon<lb />
may find themselves working next<lb />
on television movies.<lb />
Yet even as a television movie,<lb />
Undercover Blues would have had<lb />
low ratings. Even television audi-<lb />
ences are more discriminating than<lb />
this.<lb />
On a scale of one to 10, Under-<lb />
cover Blues rates a two.<lb />

Freshman quarterback Chris Hester stepped up big for the Pirates after Marcus Crandell was lost for<lb />

Crandell's season ended<lb />
by late hit from Ekiyor<lb />

Another solid performance<lb />
by running back Junior Smith,<lb />
combined with a much improved<lb />
defensive effort, helped belt ECU<lb />
to a convincing and emotional<lb />
victory over the Golden Knights<lb />
of Central Florida,41-17, in front<lb />
of a capacity crowd of 30,867 Sat-<lb />

However, the victory may<lb />
have been overshadowed by a<lb />
devastating and gruesome injury<lb />
suffered to starting quarterback<lb />
Marcus Crandell at the hands of<lb />
Knight outside linebacker, Emil<lb />
Ekiyor.<lb />
"Marcus Crandell suffered a<lb />
dislocation of his left ankle on the<lb />
field according to ECU team<lb />
physician Dr. John Spiegal. This<lb />
report came immediately after<lb />
the game.<lb />
Dr. Spiegal went on to say<lb />
that the degree of the injury<lb />
would determine Crandell's sta-<lb />

-case scenario came true:<lb />
Crandell will be out for the re-<lb />

Redshirt freshman Chris<lb />

a flawless performance in which<lb />
he completed 17 of 23 passes for<lb />
216 yards and a touchdown.<lb />
"When I saw Marcus go<lb />
down, I knew it was up to me to<lb />
come in and lead the team<lb />

ries, the guys had confidence in<lb />
me and I had confidence in my<lb />

Hester's presence was<lb />
quickly felt as he found the seams<lb />
and connected on numerous<lb />
short passing routes. He also hit<lb />
some crucial passes on third<lb />
down. Hester did a fine job of<lb />

ECU's 19-year-old quarterback, Marcus<lb />
Crandell, lay on his back with his left foot twisted<lb />
over 90 degrees, like his leg was made of play-doh.<lb />
It was hard to tell what was broken, and specu-<lb />
lation of a career-ending knee in-<lb />
jury ran through the stadium<lb />
along with vivid memories of Joe<lb />
Theisman's broken leg at the<lb />
hands of Lawrence Taylor.<lb />
Doctors operated on Crandell<lb />
for 2 12 hours to repair a dislo-<lb />
cated ankle and broken fibula. He<lb />
is expected to miss the remainder<lb />
of this season.<lb />
The person responsible for<lb />
this would not be so important<lb />
except that, unlike Taylor, Emil<lb />
Ekiyor hit Crandell late.<lb />
To the dismay of most ECU<lb />
fans, Ekiyor- was not ejected. He<lb />
found comfort in his coaches on<lb />
the sideline, who patted him on<lb />
the head.<lb />
"1 don't know if he clobbered him Central<lb />
Florida Head Coach Gene McDowell said.<lb />
Really? Simple physics would suggest that<lb />
Crandell's ankle would not have snapped from a<lb />
love-pat.<lb />
"(Ekiyor) claims that he was trying to catch him<lb />
and keep him from falling McDowell added in<lb />
defense of his player.<lb />
Well, Crandell would not have needed to be<lb />
caught if Ekiyor had not smashed into the freshman<lb />
from behind, after the play was over.<lb />
A player lacking true ability will rely on breaking<lb />
the rules: Ekiyor had one tackle during the game.<lb />
A coach lacking integrity will let his players get<lb />
away with breaking the rules: four minutes after<lb />
Crandell's season ended on a cheap-shot, Junior<lb />
Smith ran out of bounds and got tackled late by<lb />
linebackerCharlesAnderson(15-yard personal foul).<lb />
"That was just a horrible one on us McDowell<lb />
said.<lb />
On the next play, Jerris<lb />
McPhail got an eye full of fingers<lb />
and his face mask twisted (15-<lb />
yard personal foul).<lb />
"(It) was just a rake across<lb />
the face he didn't even grab<lb />
his face mask McDowell re-<lb />
plied.<lb />
Somehow, the UCF coach<lb />
seemed more confused about the<lb />
ill will towards his team than the<lb />
flagsandsaid, thecrowd,for<lb />
whatever reason, thought we<lb />
were the bad guys after (Ekiyor<lb />
injured Ciandell)<lb />
Seconds after Ekiyor rolled<lb />
off of Crandell, tight-end<lb />
Carlester Crumpler took off his<lb />
helmet, fell to the ground and his prayers were on<lb />
their way up. Ekiyor mulled around the field, took<lb />
a seat on the bench and waited for play to resume.<lb />
To protect Ekiyor from the brunt of angry spec-<lb />
tators, several additional security officers were<lb />
moved from the student section to the Central Florida<lb />
bench on the south side of the stadium.<lb />
Even though no one on ECU's football team<lb />
would offer any warning to Ekiyor after the game,<lb />
he may, again, need protection if the Golden Knights<lb />
ever face off with the Pirates again.<lb />
Ekiyor is now a wanted man.<lb />
Rugby kicks off<lb />
season with style<lb />
By William Ellis<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Wham, bam, thank you<lb />
ma'am.<lb />
The ECU rugby team opened<lb />
their new season with a work-<lb />
man-like win, 43-0, over North<lb />
Carolina State's Wolf Pack. The<lb />
Pirates dominated all phases of<lb />
the game as they smashed through<lb />
State at will.<lb />
Despite wet conditions, the<lb />
Pirate backs handled very well.<lb />
The halfback combination of Sean<lb />
Miller and Andy Horrocks kept<lb />
the ball steadily moving down the<lb />
line. For example: both wings and<lb />
fullback scored.<lb />
The Pirates were led by Rick<lb />
Snow's hat trick as he ran in three<lb />
tries from right wing. His cohorts,<lb />
fullback Opie Moss and left wing<lb />
MikeCulligart,alsoscoredagainst<lb />
ahard tacklingState defense. Moss<lb />
also added four conversions to<lb />
the total.<lb />
The forwards had a field-day,<lb />
too. Senior lock Jay Keller domi-<lb />
nated the lineouts, provided a<lb />
driving force in set scrums and<lb />
ran amok through a disorganized<lb />
State defense. Whenever State<lb />
tried to stabilize play, the Pirate<lb />
forwards drove in, knocked State<lb />
back, stripped the ball and passed<lb />
it to the backs who continued the<lb />
assault on State's goal.<lb />
ECU committed numerous<lb />
penalties as they aggressively<lb />
sought out Wolfpack ball carri-<lb />
ers. In a closer game, the minuses<lb />
would have crippled the Pirates.<lb />
On this day, the Pirates so thor-<lb />
oughly dominated State it did not<lb />
matter. The penalty total reflected<lb />
the reckless abandon with which<lb />
Pirate ruggers went after the<lb />
Wolfpack in all phases of the<lb />
match.<lb />
Forward domination was so<lb />
thorough that State nearly con-<lb />
ceded two pushover tries to the<lb />
Pirate forwards.<lb />
Captain Jason Webb cred-<lb />
ited his two scores to the forward<lb />
pack which relentlessly drove<lb />
forward.<lb />
TheWolfpackbacksnevergot<lb />
started because Webb and flank-<lb />
ers Scott Grieger and Dave<lb />
Gauthier harassed them unmer-<lb />
cifully, forcing them into numer-<lb />
ous errors.<lb />
"The backs moved the ball<lb />
as well as I've ever seen them<lb />
Pirate coach Larry Babits said,<lb />
"The ball movement got the for-<lb />
wards into support and we just<lb />
kept rolling<lb />
Babits said he worried about<lb />
State because they always have<lb />
tough forwards and it was the<lb />
Pirates' first game. The team lost<lb />

good effort vs.<lb />
By Kerry Nester<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Heading into Saturday's<lb />
Wake Forest Invitational, the ECU<lb />
cross country team did not expect<lb />
to be so competitive. The women<lb />
finished second behind the Dea-<lb />
cons and the men finished a close<lb />
third out of five teams.<lb />
The meet featured last year's<lb />
runner-up, UNC-Charlotte, and<lb />
nationally ranked powerhouse,<lb />
Wake Forest University. East<lb />
Carolina proved itself danger-<lb />
ously competitive in both the<lb />
men's and women's cross-coun-<lb />
try races.<lb />
The Lady Pirates went into<lb />
the race fresh off an overall first<lb />
place finish at Pembroke State last<lb />
week and was looking forward to<lb />
the challenge of racing against the<lb />
49ers and Demon Deacons who<lb />
were the definite favorites going<lb />
into the race.<lb />
Heading the pack once again<lb />
for ECU were freshmen twin sis-<lb />
ters, Dava and Tara Rhodes, who<lb />
are quickly making a name for<lb />
themselves very early in the sea-<lb />
son.<lb />
Dava finished in overall<lb />
fourth place with a time of<lb />

in-state foes<lb />
18:33.03, just 16 seconds behind<lb />
meet champion Stevenson of<lb />
Wake Forest who won with a time<lb />
of 18:17.95. Tara came in at<lb />
19:06.18 which earned her a sev-<lb />
enth place finish three spots be-<lb />
hind her sister.<lb />
"Dava and Tara went after<lb />
them from the start and never let<lb />
up Assistant Head Coach<lb />
Charles Justice said. "And all the<lb />
girls, right on down the line, re-<lb />
ally did great<lb />
For the men, a third-place fin-<lb />
ish was more than respectable<lb />
against tough competition. Sean<lb />
Connolly led the way for the Pi-<lb />
rates with an overall eighth-place<lb />
finish with a time of 16:26.<lb />
Eric Adamski was the senior<lb />
leader for ECU placing a respect-<lb />
able 17thplacewithatimeof 16:57.<lb />
Also running well for the Pirates<lb />
was Mike Jolley, who ran a per-<lb />
sonal best on a track that was<lb />
considered extremely slow be-<lb />
cause of the difficulty of the turns<lb />
and hills.<lb />
