TheHealth Education Depart-<lb />

successful student volunteer pro-<lb />
gram. Headed by Judy Baker, project<lb />
director and health education lec-<lb />
turer, the program has over 700 ac-<lb />
tive volunteers.<lb />
"Last semester we had 755 stu-<lb />
dent volunteers who worked 5,006<lb />

Four years ago the program<lb />
began with six agencies, and less<lb />
than 250 volunteers. Today the pro-<lb />
gram is volunteering for 42 agencies,<lb />
and has quadrupled the number of<lb />
volunteers.<lb />
"We have exceeded all our<lb />
goals and objectives every semes-<lb />

The program is designed to<lb />
promote volunteerism among col-<lb />

students are given the opportunity<lb />
to select agencies where they would<lb />
like to volunteer.<lb />
"Health 1000 is our primary<lb />
vehicle for obtaining volunteers<lb />
Baker said.<lb />
Debra Tavasso, Baker's assis-<lb />

member who said she uses her class<lb />
time to encourage the students to<lb />
become involved in this program.<lb />
Although the main source of<lb />
volunteers comes from health<lb />
courses, anyone is eligible to partici-<lb />

minimum of five hours of volunteer<lb />
work is required.<lb />
The ECU student volunteer<lb />

but Baker said the program was<lb />
awarded a continuation grant be-<lb />

Besidespromoting<lb />
volunteerismamongstudents,Baker<lb />
hopes that the students will become<lb />
more interested in their community.<lb />
"We hope that students will<lb />
continue tobe life-longvolunteers<lb />
Baker said. "Students can also use<lb />
the experience to look at career op-<lb />

Child vaccination studied<lb />
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP)<lb />
 The first U.S. study of vac-<lb />
cines for children with HI V will<lb />
be conducted in 12 cities, in-<lb />
cluding one in North Carolina,<lb />
to see if the inoculations will<lb />
boost their immune systems<lb />
against the virus, which causes<lb />
AIDS.<lb />
The vaccines have been<lb />
tested on adults, said thestudy's<lb />
chairman, Dr. John S. Lambert<lb />
of the University of Rochester<lb />
Medical School. Preliminary<lb />
evidence from tests on adults<lb />
has shown that some vaccines<lb />
can boost the immune system's<lb />
fightagainst HIV and stimulate<lb />
new immune responses, accord-<lb />
ing to the National Institutes of<lb />
Health, which is involved with<lb />
the study.<lb />
Ninety children will be re-<lb />
cruited for the study of three<lb />
experimental vaccines at 12<lb />
sites, including Rochester's<lb />
Strong Memorial Hospital. The<lb />
other cities are expected to be<lb />
New York City; Durham, N.C<lb />
Worcester, Mass San Francisco;<lb />
Boston; Syracuse, N.Y Los An-<lb />
geles; Houston; Denver; New-<lb />
Brunswick, N.J and Chicago.<lb />
The study will seek chil-<lb />
dren between 1 month and 12<lb />
years old, withdocumented HIV<lb />
infection but no symptoms other<lb />
than swollen lymph glands or a<lb />
midly swollen liver or spleen.<lb />
The children will be given<lb />
immunizations every four weeks<lb />
for six months, and then be moni-<lb />
tored for 24 weeks.<lb />
Lambert said he suggested<lb />
the study because some parents<lb />
of children with HIV asked that<lb />
their children get a vaccine in-<lb />
stead of the drug AZT, which<lb />
attacks the virus but doesn't<lb />
boost the immune system-<lb />

What's Up, Doc?<lb />
Rural medicine garners new<lb />
interest from medical residents;<lb />
could bolster medical outlook<lb />
The good old days.<lb />
The days when a person could ride into a town,<lb />
hitch their horse up outside of the saloon and down<lb />
a shot of whiskey. A time when you knew everyone<lb />
ranging from the Pony Express driver to the town<lb />
drunk who collapsed every night between the coun-<lb />
try store and the doctor's office.<lb />
That brings up the one person that every other<lb />
person in town was sure to know or meet at one time<lb />
or another the doctor.<lb />
Having to deal with quacks selling miracle rem-<lb />
edies, terrible hygiene and what society would now<lb />
consider prehistoric medical practices, doctors in the<lb />
olden days were faced with many a problem and<lb />
crisis. However, one thing that existed in those times<lb />
seems to have disappeared in this age of specializa-<lb />
tion and high-finance medicine.<lb />
That fading-fast aspect is the fact that you knew<lb />
your doctor and knew that he or she would come at<lb />
a moment's notice. This rapidly fading doctor is more<lb />
commonly known as the rural doctor, or just plain<lb />
"Doc<lb />
North Carolina has become only the fifth state in<lb />
this country to offer rural<lb />
residency programs to up<lb />
and coming doctors. The pro-<lb />
gram offers residents a one-year<lb />
intensive training period at the Uni-<lb />
versity Medical Center of Eastern<lb />
Carolina-Pitt County, then interns<lb />
them at either the Roanoke-Chowan<lb />
Hospital in Ahoskie or Martin Gen-<lb />
eral Hospital in Williamston for two<lb />
years.<lb />
Dr. Colin Jones, the site coordinator at Ahoskie,<lb />
aid the goal of the program is to get the residents<lb />
'accustomed to rural education, as well a& rural<lb />
' "ing<lb />
The biggest change that residents can expect in<lb />
this rural medicine program is the inability to defer to<lb />
a specialist in the event of a condition the doctor<lb />
cannot handle him or herself. The program teaches<lb />
the residents that they can handle almost any situa-<lb />
tion they might be faced with.<lb />
Rural medicine could prove to be a vital step in<lb />
the improvement of medical care in the United States.<lb />
By instructing medical residents in the mindset of<lb />
autonomy, the future of medicine can be replaced<lb />
with an emotion of hope rather than fear of retalia-<lb />
tion.<lb />
For too long, doctors have been afraid of practic-<lb />
ing medicine for fear of malpractice suits. Only re-<lb />
cently has the country pushed for laws to protect<lb />
doctors who render assistance to someone in need.<lb />
These "Good Samaritan" laws served as the first step<lb />
in a long walk that still needs to be undertaken.<lb />
Rural medicine takes the next step in this walk<lb />
and allows fledgling doctors to gain an equilibrium<lb />
and sense of being that is seldom found in the rat-race<lb />
of metropolitan hospitals. By having an immediate<lb />
and visible effect on the patients they treat, the doc-<lb />
tors acquire a sense of contribution that grows with<lb />
each patient.<lb />
In this day and age, where health care ranks as<lb />
one of the top concerns on the public's minds, rural<lb />
medicine could serve as an acceptable remedy where<lb />
all other attempts have just served as placebos. Al-<lb />
lowing doctors a "back-to-basics" approach, rural<lb />
medicine could also be a first step in another long<lb />
walk the one towards human security.<lb />

Opinion<lb />
Page 6<lb />
By Amy E. Wirtz<lb />
Clinton aids Russia in bid for democracy<lb />
Russia is struggling; either<lb />
toward freedom or tyranny, no one<lb />
is quite sure. Russian president<lb />
Boris Yeltsin is at the helm of this<lb />
political jumble. Is it really all that<lb />
surprising that our own govern-<lb />
ment is skipping right alongside?<lb />
Yeltsin is faced with the chal-<lb />
lenge of demonstrating that de-<lb />
mocracy can be strong enough to<lb />
survive. He declares presidential<lb />
rule and calls for a referendum to<lb />
decide the issue between himself<lb />
and the old order. To carry this<lb />
agenda through, he needs political<lb />
security and aid from foreign gov-<lb />
ernments. Here is where Clinton<lb />
steps in.<lb />
President Clinton said Thurs-<lb />
day that America should heip "not<lb />
out of charity" but as a crucial in-<lb />
vestment in peace and prosperity.<lb />
He plans to fund the first phase of<lb />
his aid plan by using about $400<lb />
million the Bush administration<lb />
obtained but never spent. What is<lb />
included in this aid package, you<lb />
ask?<lb />
 A new programs to pro-<lb />
vide housing for Russian army of-<lb />
ficers withdrawn from the Baltic<lb />
states and Belarus.<lb />
 An "enterprise fund" of<lb />
$300 million over the next three<lb />
years to provide "sled loans" to<lb />
small businesses and working capi-<lb />
tal to private banks.<lb />
 Several small programs<lb />
aimed at reviving the Russian oil<lb />
and gas industry. The programs<lb />
include sending U.S. technicians to<lb />
advise Russians on extraction tech-<lb />
niques, starting an energy conver-<lb />
sation advisory program and of-<lb />
fering loans to finance U.S. oil field<lb />
equipment.<lb />
 More humanitarian aid in-<lb />
cluding infant formula, pharma-<lb />
ceutical and medical equipment.<lb />
Clinton also plans on press-<lb />
ing Yeltsin to control the central<lb />
bank, which has been printing<lb />
rubles with abandon. This has fu-<lb />
eled inflation that now runs nearly<lb />
one percent a day.<lb />
I think the world knows<lb />
what's at stake, nereis a rallying<lb />
cry of support for Yeltsin heard<lb />
round the globe, a cry led byClinton<lb />
himself. Clinton understands that<lb />
the last thing the world needs as it<lb />
emerges from the 20th century is a<lb />
Russia returned to its old ways.<lb />
Imagine the results just in the<lb />
Balkans and the Middle East alone<lb />
if Russia emerged again asa night-<lb />
marish communist super-power.<lb />
Clinton recognizes thisneed<lb />
of Yeltsin's to revive the spiiit of<lb />
democracy in the eyes of the Rus-<lb />
sian people. He admonished<lb />
Americans that we have a large<lb />
stake in the success of Russian<lb />
reform. Clinton also warned that<lb />
"if Russia were to revert to impe-<lb />
rialism or plunge into chaos, we<lb />
would need to reassess all our<lb />
plans for defense savings" po-<lb />
tentially costing billionsof dollars<lb />
in new spending.<lb />
Now certainly those are<lb />
wordsthatthepoliticiansandtax-<lb />
payerscan understand. Even more<lb />
important than our monetary in-<lb />
terests, we must recognize<lb />
Russia's struggle in its infant<lb />
stages of democracy and support<lb />
its first fumbling steps.<lb />

Cartoon offends pro-life supporter with message<lb />
To the Editor:<lb />
As a pro-life student, I<lb />
was highly offended by the<lb />
editorial cartoon on March<lb />
25. It disturbs me that one of<lb />
the few groups it is still po-<lb />
litically correct to stereotype<lb />
is the pro-life movement.<lb />
Being involved in sev-<lb />
eral pro-lifegroupsand hav-<lb />
ing discussed the killing of<lb />
Dr. Gunn extensively, I have<lb />
found no one who feels that<lb />
this act was justified. We are<lb />
adamantly opposed to sense-<lb />
less murders, that's what<lb />
makes us pro-life. All of us<lb />
findGriffinjustasbad as the<lb />
people who perform the<lb />
more than 4,400 abortions<lb />
per day.<lb />
I have been appalled by<lb />
the so-called representatives<lb />
of the pro-life movement the<lb />
media has interviewed about<lb />
the situation. Where did they<lb />
find these people, under a<lb />
rock? The vast majority of us<lb />
find these people an embar-<lb />
rassment to our cause.<lb />
Furthermore, I find it<lb />
very ironic that this hap-<lb />
pened at the same time the<lb />
bill that would make it a fed-<lb />
eral crime to exercise one's<lb />
freedom to protest by stand-<lb />
ing in front of an abortion<lb />
mill is before Congress. Let<lb />
me ask, who has more to gain<lb />
by the killing of Dr. Gunn?<lb />
Certainly not the pro-life<lb />
movement.<lb />

To the Editor:<lb />
This letter is in response<lb />
to the article by Jason<lb />
Tremblay concerning the is-<lb />
sue of homosexuals in the<lb />
military. We feel that we need<lb />
to set matter straight concern-<lb />
ing his own personal opinion<lb />
as well as those of a factual<lb />
nature.<lb />
First of all, we must say<lb />
we do not believe homosexu-<lb />
als should be excluded from<lb />
society, but yes, at this time<lb />
homosexuals should be ex-<lb />
cluded from military service.<lb />
The real question is whether<lb />
we should cater to the wishes<lb />
of the minority while at the<lb />
same time endangering the<lb />
national security of the ma-<lb />
jority, lb it really worth it?<lb />
Tremblay wagered that<lb />
most people reading his ar-<lb />
ticle have not or never will be<lb />
in military service. While ci-<lb />
viliansenjoy basic rights guar-<lb />
anteed to them by the Consti-<lb />
tution, those who serve in the<lb />
military give up certain rights,<lb />
one of which is a personal<lb />
right to privacy. It is immedi-<lb />
ately apparent from reading<lb />
what you have to say that you<lb />
have never served in the mili-<lb />
tary in any capacity, so what<lb />
makes you an authority on<lb />
the subject? Anyone with ex-<lb />
perience in the armed services<lb />
understands why a publicly-<lb />
pronounced homosexual<lb />
would undermine morale,<lb />
discipline, unit cohesiveness,<lb />
espirit de corps and cause<lb />
unnecessary tension in any<lb />
unit. We would also like to<lb />
say that your notion that<lb />
"women are fully accepted in<lb />
the military" is not at all true.<lb />
After all, how would you<lb />
know? How can you make<lb />
such a statement when every-<lb />
one knows that women are<lb />
still not allowed to perform in<lb />
combat arms occupations?<lb />
Please, Tremblav, do your<lb />
homework next time!<lb />
Finally, we take offense<lb />
to your statement of "just how<lb />
much strength or machismo<lb />
does it take to fight in a war<lb />
todav?" Clearly, you are way<lb />
off target here. For example,<lb />
infantry combat has changed<lb />
very little in the past 200years.<lb />
If anything, infantry combat<lb />
has become more deadly in<lb />
light of the presence of weap-<lb />
ons of mass destruction. Sol-<lb />
diers must keep themselves<lb />
in a high state of physical fit-<lb />
ness at all times to ensure that<lb />
they can withstand the tre-<lb />
mendous rigors of the battle-<lb />
field. Again, another concept<lb />
with which you would be<lb />
unfamiliar. Technology does<lb />
not at all ease the burden of<lb />
carrying a 100-lb. rucksack,<lb />
or engaging in a 30-mile forced<lb />
road march in full combat<lb />
gear, or pulling guard duty<lb />
after being up several days<lb />
without rest in sub-zero tem-<lb />
peratures, or having to run<lb />
five miles or more to reach an<lb />
objective, or we think you<lb />
get the point.<lb />
In closing we would 1 ike<lb />
to say that serving in the mili-<lb />
tary is not like working for a<lb />
large corporation. Its goals<lb />
and objectives should not be<lb />
compromised by what some<lb />
feel is politically correct. We<lb />
vehemently disagree with<lb />
vour views concerning the<lb />
military and invite you to en-<lb />
dure six to 12 weeks of mili-<lb />
tary boot camp.<lb />

QVC serves as<lb />

QVC.<lb />
I know, many of you probably think<lb />
watering QVC is a mindless, empty exer-<lb />
cise, and it is. However, there's a lot to be<lb />
said for those fine folks at the Quality<lb />
Value and Convenience channel.<lb />
It must take a lot of hard work and<lb />
training to stand on a hot set and talk for<lb />
10 minutes about a crystal ashtray. What<lb />
can one possibly say about a crystal ash-<lb />
tray?<lb />
"Okay, this is item number J-10078,<lb />
the Caparaguzzi designer crystal ashtray.<lb />
Now, this ashtray is going to give you<lb />
years of quality ash-catching use. And<lb />
remember, it's a Caparaguzzi<lb />
These people always talk about the<lb />
merchandise in the future tense. They say<lb />
the phrase "is going to" a lot, as in, "This<lb />
nail puller is going to make your life so<lb />
much easier and "This fluorescent Mr.<lb />
Spock poster is going to be an excellent<lb />
conversation starter<lb />
Don't get me wrong, there are some<lb />
truly good deals on QVC. I saw a no-spill<lb />
coffee mug one night for $10.37 and a<lb />
special collectors' edition of a Wayne<lb />

$89.50.<lb />
Fortunately, QVC is purely an en-<lb />

outlet for purchasing things. I don't even<lb />
have a QVC membership card. However,<lb />
the network has other benefits.<lb />
I think the "V" in QVC stands for<lb />
Valium.<lb />
Suppose you're lying in bed one<lb />
night and you can't sleep because you<lb />
keep thin king about the plight of the spot-<lb />
ted owl.<lb />
Just turn on QVC so you can barely<lb />
hear it and then wait for Morpheus to<lb />
descend. It works like a charm.<lb />
Then there are those people who<lb />
call into QVC at 3:30 a.m apparently<lb />
unaffected by the soporific effect of the<lb />
QVC hosts.<lb />
Who are these people? What kind of<lb />
lives do they lead? What kind of rifle will<lb />
they use on the college kids?<lb />
I mean, just how empty does your<lb />
life have to be to need to converse with<lb />
Johnnv about a crystal ashtrav, or about<lb />
how much he has changed your life since<lb />
you've been watching? The conversations<lb />
are a sociologist's dream.<lb />
"Hi, this is Johnny, welcome to QVC,<lb />
you're on the air. Who's this please?"<lb />
(Three second pause.)<lb />
"This is Rose in Kneebuckle, South<lb />

While theGray Gallery hasconsistently pre-<lb />

didn't think they'd really do it<lb />
Suicide is one of those troubling topics<lb />
and traumatic events that makes all of us<lb />
anxious. Often, when we feel anxious about<lb />
something, we avoid talking or even thinking<lb />
about it, perhaps in the illusory belief that<lb />
Ignoring a danger will make it go away or,<lb />
Bonversely, out of a superstitious fear that<lb />
" acknowledging one might cause it to become<lb />
a reality. Depending on our own personal<lb />
anxieties, we may avoid discussing subjects<lb />
such as alcohol and drugs, terminal illness or<lb />
emotional problems like suicidal depression.<lb />
Nevertheless,itcanbevitalforstudentsto<lb />
be able to recognize warning signs of severe<lb />
depression and suicide in their peers and to<lb />
take appropriate action. Suicide, and suicid-<lb />
ally self-destructive behaviors (e.g. fatalities<lb />

drugs, unprotected sex or self-starvation) are<lb />
major causes of death in the college-aged<lb />

Those who have made previous attempts are<lb />
at especially high risk because they may try<lb />
again with greater lethality. Individ uals using<lb />
drugs or alcohol are more likely to act impul-<lb />
sively, sometimes without even consciously<lb />
planning to hurt themselves.<lb />
Here are some indications to watch for. 1)<lb />
A directly stated intention to kill one's self or<lb />
indirect remarks such as, "I have nothing to<lb />
live for Nobody would miss me if I died" or<lb />
"My friends and family would be better off<lb />

is when the depression begins to lift, and the<lb />

Bucs drop two of three to No. 25 ODU<lb />
By Michael Albuquerque<lb />
StarTWriteT"<lb />
NORFOLK, Va. No. 25-<lb />
ranked Old Dominion (20-4,2-1 in<lb />
the CA A) won two of three games<lb />
from the Pirates in weekend col-<lb />
lege baseball action to remain the<lb />
favorite to win the CAA regular<lb />
season title.<lb />
East Carolina (24-9, 6-3) ap-<lb />
peared to have the series won on<lb />
Sunday beforeeverything fell apart<lb />
with two outs in the bottom of the<lb />
eighth. Two Pirate errors and the<lb />
bullpen's collapse keyed ODU's<lb />
comeback with six unearned runs<lb />
in the eighth inning for a 9-6 win.<lb />
ECU struck early againstODU<lb />
left-hander John Smith as Jason<lb />
Head hit his fourth home run of the<lb />
season a two-run blast to right,<lb />
and Pat Watkinsand Chad Triplett<lb />
each hit two-run home runs (Nos.<lb />
13 and two, respectively) in the<lb />
sixth inning to complete the Pirate<lb />
scoring.<lb />
ODU closer Wayne Gomes (1-<lb />
1), a potential first-round pick who<lb />
throws a 92 mph fastball, pitched<lb />
the lasttwoinnings in relief of Smith<lb />
for his first win of the year.<lb />
ECU starter Mike Sanburn,<lb />
who threw 114 pitches in the game,<lb />
pitched brilliantly for the Pirates<lb />
but left the game after surrender-<lb />
ing a two-out single in the eighth.<lb />
Billy Layton (0-2) and Stancil<lb />
Morse followed in relief for ECU,<lb />
but three singles, two errors and<lb />
onewalk later, ODUhad scored six<lb />
runs to escape with its 20th win in<lb />
The Pirates looked on as ODU scored six runs in the eighth inning to<lb />
by two errors and the collapse of the bullpen.<lb />
1993 due mostly to a schedule<lb />
padded with weak NCAA Divi-<lb />
sion 1 and II teams.<lb />
The Monarchs came into the<lb />
weekend series thinking they were<lb />
world-beaters with a team batting<lb />
average of .364 and a team ERA of<lb />
2.49 and seemed a bit surprised<lb />
when the Pirates took game one on<lb />
Saturday 6-3.<lb />
ECU left-hander Johnny Beck<lb />
(6-2) allowed only five hits, struck<lb />
out six and walked one for thecom-<lb />
plete game victory. By outdeuling<lb />
ODU's lefty Sean Hennessy (5-2),<lb />
Beck now stands alone as the CAA<lb />
leader in wins.<lb />
Game two on Saturday fea-<lb />
tured another outstanding pitch-<lb />
ing performance.<lb />
However, this timeitwasODU<lb />
starter Geoff Edsell (5-0) who<lb />
pitched a gem, allowing only four<lb />
hits and one run while striking out<lb />
File photo<lb />
win 9-6. The comeback was keyed<lb />
seven in a seven-inning complete<lb />
game win.<lb />
Lyle Hartgrove (5-2) pitched<lb />
effectively for ECU allowing only<lb />
three runs in six-innings, but the<lb />
Pirate bats were unable to get to<lb />
Edsell until doubled to lead off the<lb />
fifth and Head followed with an<lb />
RBI single.<lb />
For theirnextgame, the Pirates<lb />
will travel to Buies Creek to play<lb />

Edwards staring in<lb />
two sports for Pirates<lb />
'Neon' Deion and Bo<lb />
may soon know Lamont<lb />
By Warren Sumner<lb />
Assistant Sports Editor<lb />
ECU outfielder Lamont<lb />
Edwards is much like any<lb />
other student-athlete at ECU.<lb />
He goes to class, goes to prac-<lb />
tice and plays in games, just<lb />
like any other athlete in the<lb />
ECU program. What separates<lb />
Edward s from many other ath-<lb />
letes is the fact that he does all<lb />
of these things during the<lb />
course of two different ath-<lb />
letic seasons.<lb />
Edwards,<lb />
a native of<lb />
Clinton,<lb />
N.C plays<lb />
both football-<lb />
and baseball<lb />
at East Caro-<lb />
lina. While<lb />
playing in his<lb />
freshman<lb />
year of base-<lb />
ball eligibil-<lb />
ity, Edwards<lb />
is simulta-<lb />
n e o u s 1 y<lb />
practicing<lb />
hard in ECU<lb />
football's spring practice drills<lb />
as a receiver.<lb />
Edwards, an extremely<lb />
versatile athlete, has experi-<lb />
ence adapting to different<lb />
sports from his high school<lb />
days, as he was an all-confer-<lb />
ence player in football, bas-<lb />
ketball and baseball. Edwards<lb />
said that this experience pre-<lb />
pared him for participating in<lb />
both sports, but things are a<lb />
little tougher on the college<lb />
level.<lb />
"College sports are a lot<lb />
harder to get used to<lb />
Edwards said. "The level of<lb />
competition is a lot higher<lb />
Steve Logan has asked<lb />
Edwards to return to the Pi-<lb />
rate football team early this<lb />
spring, to help shore up weak-<lb />
nesses in the receiving corps.<lb />
Edwards will have to fill a<lb />
position at the wide-out slot<lb />
and adapt to the intricacies of<lb />
a Pirate offense adapted to fit<lb />
a two-back set.<lb />
Rumor has it that Logan<lb />
was at first displeased with<lb />
Edwards' participation in<lb />
baseball, but Edwards said<lb />
that it was just Logan's con-<lb />
cern blown out of proportion.<lb />
"He only wanted me to<lb />
play baseball if I got (playing<lb />
time) Edwards said. "He<lb />
didn't want me to split my<lb />
concentration if I didn't get to<lb />
play Edwards said that be-<lb />
ing a part of ECU football this<lb />
year was a great experience for<lb />
him, but admits that he was<lb />
nervous, despite his lack of<lb />
playing time.<lb />
"Even though I didn't get<lb />
to play that much it was still<lb />
exciting to be on the field. To<lb />
have all those people in the<lb />
stands screaming can make<lb />
you a little nervous. There's a<lb />
big difference between seeing<lb />
around 100<lb />
people in the<lb />
stands for<lb />
baseball, and<lb />
30,000 for<lb />
football<lb />
However ex-<lb />
citing ECU<lb />
football is for<lb />
Edwards, it is<lb />
quite appar-<lb />
ent that his<lb />
first love is<lb />
baseball.<lb />
Edwards<lb />
was coached<lb />
by Jimmy<lb />
Raynor, a<lb />
former pitcher for the Los An-<lb />
geles Dodgers, at Clinton High<lb />
School. He said that the em-<lb />
phasis put on getting an edu-<lb />
cation at Clinton has prepared<lb />
him for the commitment that<lb />
he said ECU has for its ath-<lb />
letes.<lb />
A computer science ma-<lb />
jor, Edwards said he hopes to<lb />
work for a technical organiza-<lb />
tion like IBM when he gradu-<lb />
ates from college, but still har-<lb />
bors a dream for going pro.<lb />
"I don't want to rely on<lb />
going pro because a lot of play-<lb />
ers get bounced around in the<lb />
pros, but it is definitely my<lb />
dteam to play in the big<lb />
leagues Edwards said.<lb />
Edwards said that his<lb />
athleticism and speed may pro-<lb />
vide him with an advantage<lb />
when the professional scouts<lb />
look his way in a couple years,<lb />
but right now he is concentrat-<lb />
ing on "giving 100 percent" in<lb />
both sports and hopes he can<lb />
gain success in each.<lb />
"It would be a big fantasy<lb />
of mine to help ECU (football)<lb />
win a big bowl game, and then<lb />
turn around and win a NCAA<lb />
baseball championship<lb />
Given Edwards' potential<lb />
at both sports, avid fans of ECU<lb />
athletics can expect to see much<lb />
more of him in the future.<lb />

Each team was loaded with talent and<lb />

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) Jimmy<lb />
Hensley, the 1992 Winston Cup rookie<lb />
of the year, is the choice to take over the<lb />
driving duties for the late Alan Kulwicki,<lb />
according to a published report.<lb />
"Alan told me a year ago that if<lb />
something happened to put Jimmy<lb />
Hensley in the car Felix Sabates told<lb />
the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch for<lb />
a story the newspaper published today.<lb />
Hensley, a resident of Ridgeway,<lb />
Va hasbeen looking for a Winston Cup<lb />
ride since his 1992 team owner, Cale<lb />
Yarborough, replaced him with former<lb />
Daytona 500 winner Dernke Cope.<lb />
Sabates, whoowns the WinstonCup<lb />
cars driven by Kyle Petty and Kenny<lb />
Wallace, has been a close friend of<lb />
Kulwicki's for years. At the request of<lb />
Kulwicki's father, Gerald, Sabates has<lb />
been helping to handle Alan Kulwicki's<lb />
affairs since the reigning Winston Cup<lb />
champion was killed in a plane crash<lb />
Thursday.<lb />
Sabates said he had not discussed<lb />
the matter of the racing team's future<lb />
with Kulwicki and would not do so until<lb />
after the funeral, which is scheduled for;<lb />
Wednesday in Greenfield, Wis.<lb />
"Thursday morning, I'll ask Mr.<lb />
Kulwicki what he wants to do, then go<lb />

Alan Kulwicki left his racing team<lb />
to his father in a recently drawn will<lb />
Sabates said. But Gerald Kulwicki, he<lb />
added, "is not in a position financially<lb />
to take over this team. He has to have<lb />
time to think it through.<lb />
"Alantook good care of his finances.<lb />

percent of them. Going through his af-<lb />
fairs, I've seen how well he looked after<lb />
things<lb />

Kulwicki's affairs has not been difficult,<lb />
even though he has two other teams to<lb />
run.<lb />
"This is more important than all of -<lb />

The sanitation department's<lb />

Because for all the anah sis all<lb />

wasn't anywhere near the first<lb />

his father now makes his living as<lb />
