SGA supports WZMB's downtown activities<lb />
By Joseph Horst<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The Student Government Associa-<lb />
tion passed a resolution expressing full<lb />
support to the campus radio station,<lb />
WZMB, in their fight to broadcast from<lb />
the downtown area.<lb />
The university attorneys have previ-<lb />
ously stated thata high risk of liability to the<lb />
university exists when campus organiza-<lb />
tions associate with events that serve alco-<lb />
hol. They have also voiced concerns about<lb />
FCC violations and the responsibility of<lb />
parties involved in functions where alcohol<lb />
is served.<lb />
The university attorneys concluded<lb />
that since neither the Media Board nor<lb />
WZMB is insured, the university could be<lb />
held liableasa "deep pocket" in any injurv<lb />
cases that could occur during an event.<lb />
TheSGA resolution statedinpartth.it<lb />
WZMB is ECU's only radio station, has<lb />
unfairly been singled out more man any<lb />
other campus organization, and has been<lb />
banned from sponsoring events in local<lb />
taverns.<lb />
"(T)hisformof restriction with WZMB<lb />
could lead to the start of allcampus organi-<lb />
zations being regulated in some way the<lb />
resolution stated.<lb />
Troy Dreyfus, chair of the Student<lb />
Welfare Committee and SGA chief of staff,<lb />
voiced concerns about this a rbitrarv I imita-<lb />
tion imposed by the university.<lb />
"I feel that WZMB was being unfairly<lb />
singled out by some university officials<lb />
Dreyfus said I think that everyone should<lb />
be allowed to hold their meetings where<lb />
they deem appropriate<lb />
Other non-media organizations on<lb />
this campus appear to be exempt from the<lb />
limitation placed on the campus radio sta-<lb />
tion. Wine and cheese socials are held on<lb />
campus by the American Marketing Asso-<lb />
ciation and both the ECU Philosophy Club<lb />
and Psi Chi, the national honor society in<lb />
Psychology,holdmeetingsatChico'sdown-<lb />
town.<lb />
I lie restriction on WZMB as a media<lb />
organization has raised questions and con-<lb />
cerns from various members in the SGA<lb />
and the Media Board. Courtney Jones, SGA<lb />
president, said the university needs to ap-<lb />
proach other alcohol-related functions.<lb />
"1 think before we single out WZMB<lb />
we need to look at other organizations<lb />
Jones said. "We also need to look at the<lb />
functions the organizations sponsor that<lb />
are alcohol related<lb />
Tim Johnson, general manager of<lb />
WZMB, also said risk to the university is<lb />
presentalready becauseof thecurrentmeet-<lb />
ingsheldon-campuswherealcoholisserved<lb />
or the off-campus meetings at bars down-<lb />
town.<lb />
"WZMB don't want to put anybody<lb />
at risk it seems the university is doing it<lb />
already he said.<lb />
ECU currently follows a Risk Man-<lb />
agement Polio initiated by the Fraternitv<lb />
Insurance Purchasing Group when han-<lb />
dling matters pertaining to fraternities, so-<lb />
rorities and alcohol. The policy states that<lb />
"no chapter may co-sponsor an event with<lb />
an alcohol distributor, charitableorganiza-<lb />
tion or tavern wherealcohol isgivenaway,<lb />
sold or otherwise provided to those<lb />
present<lb />
The policy further clarifies this state-<lb />
ment by defining a tavern as an "establish-<lb />
ment generating more than half of annual<lb />
gross sales from alcohol<lb />
The policy addresses the liability is-<lb />
sue by suggesting that members hold their<lb />
parties at establishments thathavea liquor<lb />
license. The liability then rests with the<lb />
establishment, and its bartenders are held<lb />

Incoming international students no<lb />
longer have a home.<lb />
The ECU International House has<lb />
closed as a haven to international students<lb />
upon their arrival in Greenville. After trav-<lb />
eling long distances from their homeland<lb />
students intending to live off-campus have<lb />
a couple days delay in which they need a<lb />
temporary residence.<lb />
The International House was taken<lb />
over by Academic Affairs in the summer of<lb />
1992 for the International Programs offices.<lb />
In the November - December 1992 edi-<lb />
tion of the International Spectrum, the inter-<lb />
national student newsletter, a notice was<lb />
posted requestingassistance in temporarily<lb />
housing new students upon their arrival in<lb />
January.<lb />
"We have had some response from<lb />
people interested in housing someone from<lb />
their own country said Dr. Lucy Wright,<lb />
assistant dean of student development and<lb />
director of special populations. "We think it<lb />
is better to place students with other stu-<lb />
dents than with a family. After a long trip it<lb />
is easier to feel more relaxed with a stu-<lb />

The International House had been<lb />
open since 1974. It served as a dorm and a<lb />
multicultural center to students from around<lb />
the world.<lb />
International students will now have<lb />
the options of living in the dormitories or<lb />
finding off-campus housing.<lb />
Wright said they have never had to<lb />

Blood mobile to roll on campus today<lb />
By Jason Williams<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Whether due to a decreas-<lb />
ing number of donors this year<lb />
or to the popularity of the new<lb />
Dracula movie, the American<lb />
Red Cross is in need of blood<lb />
once again.<lb />
As a result, the Bloodmo-<lb />
bile will make its annual fall<lb />
semester stop at ECU today in<lb />
Mendenhall from 12-6 p.m.<lb />
The blood drive is spon-<lb />
sored by the ECU Student Vol-<lb />
unteers Program and funded<lb />
by Z. Smith Reynolds.<lb />
The Assistant Director to<lb />
the program, Debra Tavasso,<lb />
saul the group recruited vol-<lb />
unteers from Health 1000<lb />
( lasses to help with the drive.<lb />
"We're hoping for a large<lb />
turnout in part because the<lb />
number of students donating<lb />
this semester has been down<lb />
ravasso said. She attributed<lb />
tlif low numbers to the colds<lb />
anil flu that have been going<lb />
around.<lb />
Giving blood is easv ac-<lb />
cording to the Red Cross. The<lb />
only requirements are that an<lb />
individual is in good health,<lb />
weighs at least 110 pounds, and<lb />
is 17 years of age or older.<lb />
You can go about your<lb />
normal activity shortly after<lb />
donating. All you need to do is<lb />
have something to drink to re-<lb />
place the fluid lost and avoid<lb />
heavy lifting for 24 hours fol-<lb />
lowing your donation.<lb />
It takes about 10 minutes<lb />
to donate a unit of blood, al-<lb />
though the entire process, from<lb />
registration to refreshments,<lb />
will take about an hour.<lb />
Tavasso said that no ap-<lb />
pointment is necessary, but the<lb />
waiting time is generally less<lb />
in the morning.<lb />
This blood drive will be<lb />
conducted by the Mid-Atlan-<lb />
tic Regional Blood Services di-<lb />
vision o( the American Red<lb />
Cross.<lb />
I his regional office pro-<lb />
vides blood for3.3 million resi-<lb />
dents in central and southeast<lb />
Virginia and eastern North<lb />
Carolina.<lb />
The Red Cross reports<lb />
that to meet our region's daily<lb />
blood requirements, some 605<lb />
units of blood must be col-<lb />
lected and processed each day.<lb />
Pete Dixon, an ECU jun-<lb />
ior, said he felt a duty to do-<lb />
nate blood.<lb />
"1 usually try to give<lb />
blood a couple of times per<lb />
year Dixon said. I know if<lb />
my family or friends needed<lb />
blood, I would hope the Red<lb />
Cross would have enough. You<lb />
never know when you might<lb />
need some blood too<lb />
Red Cross workers said<lb />
there is no substitute for hu-<lb />
man blood and would much<lb />
appreciate your donation.<lb />
"1 would like to encour-<lb />
age as many students as pos-<lb />
sible to donate blood to make<lb />
up for the low numbers who<lb />
donated previously 1 a<lb />
said<lb />
She said that you can give<lb />
blood every 56 days.<lb /><pb facs="00058355_tn_0002" /><lb />

The College of William and Mary will mark its 300th anniver-<lb />

chartered in 1693 by King William III and Queen Mary II of England<lb />
to bring education to colonists and Christianity to Native Ameri-<lb />
cans. William and Mary, a private, four-year university, will focus<lb />
its celebrations on two periods: Charter Week, Feb. 8-13, and home-<lb />
coming, Oct. 20-24. "In human terms, there are very few things that<lb />
reach the age of 300 said Henry Rosovsky, a member of the class<lb />
of 1949. "That, alone, is something to celebrate<lb />

Nude scene cut from play at MSU<lb />
A scene from the play "Sleeping Beauty or Coma" was cut<lb />
from the student production at Minot State University because the<lb />
script calls for an actress to remove her bra with her back to the<lb />
audience. The decision was made by Minot State University Presi-<lb />
dent H. Erik Shaar, who said he was responding to public pressure<lb />
about the scene. He told the Red & Green newspaper that he had not<lb />
read the play. "I consider it good judgment Shaar said. "Censor-<lb />
ship would have been to close the play down without having seen<lb />
it or read it Shaar received many called to object to the scene.<lb />
Student Association President Scott Carlson disagreed with Shaar,<lb />
saying Shaar censored the play because he restricted artistic expres-<lb />
sion. "How do we decide who is to judge what is or isn't immoral?"<lb />
he said I would guess that most of the calls weren't from students.<lb />
And this is a student issue<lb />
Forty percent of instructors work part time<lb />
Nearly 40 percent of college and university instructors work<lb />
part time, creating academic and professional problems for the<lb />
instructors and their students, the American Association of Univer-<lb />
sity Professors said in a recent study. Problems with part-time faculty<lb />
will continue until two-and four-year institutions are willing to cut<lb />
back on the use of adjuncts and treat the part-time faculty more fairly<lb />
and equally, said Iris Molotsky, a spokeswoman for the AAUP.<lb />
Compiled by Elizabeth Shimmei. Taken from CPS<lb />

this alternative offered to fraternities<lb />

the narrow vision the university cur-<lb />
rently has.<lb />
Jones said she was pleased<lb />
that the SGA played a crucial role in<lb />
the student body at ECU.<lb />
"I'm pleased that the resolu-<lb />

that it will have an effect on the deci-<lb />

issue is important enough for the<lb />
student government to take a stand<lb />
on it<lb />
Terri Avery, Media Board<lb />
dhairperson,echoed Jones' sentiment,<lb />
but voiced reservations about the<lb />
resolution's effectiveness.<lb />
"I think it was a good thing<lb />
Avery said in reference to the resolu-<lb />

The Apple Computer Loan.<lb />
"I expected to pay a lot more than<lb />
$35 a month for a new Macintosh Ilsi<lb />
and a printer<lb />
Jennifer obtained an Apple Computer Loan that allowed her to<lb />
buy her Apple Macintosh Ilsi and an Apple Personal LaserWriter LS<lb />
printer. She knew that owning a powerful Macintosh computer for<lb />
her full course load and her work as a doctor's assistant was a smart<lb />
thing to do. And the Apple Computer Loan was the smart way to do<lb />
it: easy application, fast turnaround and low, flexible payment terms.<lb />
So Jennifer went to the only place that offers the Apple Computer<lb />
Loan, her Apple Campus Reseller. <lb />

To the Editor<lb />
First of all, let me say that I am<lb />
a Christian. Christians forma fairly<lb />
large group of people in mis uni-<lb />
versity. As Christians, we try to<lb />
live our lives to show others the<lb />
values and morals that we have,<lb />
hoping to instill these same mor-<lb />
als and values into other people.<lb />
But nobody is perfect. Everyone,<lb />
including Christians, will do<lb />
things in their lives that aren't ex-<lb />
actly the best things to do. So it is<lb />
time mat some Christians stop<lb />
being so idealistic about sex.<lb />
We all know thatabstinence is<lb />
the only safe sex. It would be nice<lb />
if we could preach abstinence and<lb />
know that everyone would ab-<lb />
stain. But not everyone will. It's<lb />
time to get real about the situa<lb />
The purpose of condom edu-<lb />
cation is to promote safer sex. True,<lb />
the only fool-proof method is ab-<lb />
stinence and it's only right that<lb />
abstinence should be a part of the<lb />
education process, but mere has<lb />
to be a back-up plan for those who<lb />
choose not to abstain. The pur-<lb />
pose of abstinence and condoms<lb />
is essentially the same: to protect<lb />
people from contracting the HTV<lb />
virus, not to mention to prevent<lb />
STDs and pregnancy. If we don't<lb />
quitbuttmgheads,theseproblems<lb />
will continue to get worse.<lb />
Some Christians will argue<lb />
that abstinence is not idealistic,<lb />
but personally, as a Christian who<lb />

urgeeveryone to really thinkabout<lb />
the controversy. The goal for the<lb />
two sides is the same so why<lb />
not support each other? Why not<lb />
promote the two together?<lb />
Some groups, such as Peer<lb />
Health Educators, are trying to do<lb />
this. Rather than saying, "Sex is<lb />
wrong. Don't do it which of<lb />
course makes people want to do it,<lb />
they say "abstinence is best, but if<lb />
you aren't going to abstain, use a<lb />

I've just finished reading a<lb />

those of you not familiar with his<lb />
work from Saturday Night Live,<lb />
here are some examples of what<lb />
Handey terms Deep Thoughts:<lb />
 "You know what would<lb />

sentiments of some of you today.<lb />
"I bet for an Indian, snooting an<lb />
old pioneer woman in the back<lb />

Or, "I bet the main reason<lb />

saw a stuntman ram his motor-<lb />

Marijuana should be<lb />
legalized immediately. The<lb />
hypocrisy within the laws of this<lb />
"great country of ours" amazes<lb />
me.<lb />
The blind acceptance of the<lb />
people of America amazes me<lb />
even more. How is it that alcohol,<lb />
which kills a person every 7<lb />
minutes in a drunk driving<lb />
accident, is legal and pot is not?<lb />
Alcohol not only kills people<lb />
in drunk-driving accidents, it<lb />
kills millions every year as a<lb />
result of the various health<lb />
problems it inflicts on the human<lb />
body.<lb />
How many people have died<lb />
as a result of pot smoking? You<lb />
tell me.<lb />
And why is alcohol legal?<lb />
What term does the Supreme<lb />
Court use as an excuse? Social<lb />
drinking! It's time to stop fooling<lb />
ourselves. "Social drinking" is a<lb />
lie.<lb />
No, I'm not saying that the<lb />
drug problem is going to be<lb />
solved through legalization. The<lb />
drug problem is not the issue<lb />
here, freedom is.<lb />
I'm sick and tired of my tax<lb />

Everyday innocent people<lb />
die as a result of drug-related<lb />
violence, whether it's a middle-<lb />
aged man being stabbed to death<lb />
for his wallet or a three year old<lb />
child being shot in the head on a<lb />
playground as a result of cross-<lb />
fire.<lb />
The drug dealers aren't the<lb />
ones killing these people, though.<lb />
Maybe this is Uncle Sam's way<lb />
of eliminating minorities in this<lb />
country. If the government can't<lb />
legally kill people, why not pass<lb />
laws that make them kill each<lb />
other?<lb />
It's time to wake up America.<lb />
It's time to put aside your blind<lb />

One last note for mis column.<lb />
I've recently come across a few<lb />
tidbits of political humor on<lb />

Clarence Darrow. It reads: "When<lb />

When I was growing up, I was<lb />
taught that there were two things<lb />
that people either didn't or just<lb />
shouldn't talk about in public.<lb />
Politics and religion.<lb />
Well, this column will just go<lb />
to show how much I listened when<lb />
I was growing up. Since the<lb />
elections are over, mat leaves me<lb />
with the lesser of two evils (pun<lb />
definitely intended).<lb />
I grew up raised as a Catholic.<lb />
Going to a Catholic grade school<lb />
and high school, I spent a lot of<lb />
time in contact with the teachings<lb />
of the Catholic faith. Up until I<lb />
came to Greenville to go to college,<lb />
I never really had any exposure to<lb />
other religions. Sure, some classes<lb />
on religions of the world, but no<lb />
first-hand, hands-on experience.<lb />
Through my four years here<lb />
in the Emerald City, I have seen a<lb />
lot of different approaches to<lb />
religion than those I saw back in<lb />
my home town. Baptists and<lb />
Catholics have many similarities,<lb />
but also many major differences.<lb />
But one thing remains the same<lb />
throughout any religion I've ever<lb />
seen: its orientation.<lb />
Almost every religion<lb />
preaches that if you follow its<lb />
advice and teachings you will find<lb />
yourself in a better place after you<lb />
die. Buddhism preaches that if a<lb />
person lives a good life then they<lb />
will move to a higher plane of<lb />
consciousness, eventually<lb />
reaching the ultimate state of<lb />
nirvana;Catholicism preaches that<lb />
following the teachings of Jesus<lb />
Christ will allow a person to go to<lb />
heaven; the list goes on and on.<lb />
The question that comes to<lb />
my mind is this: Why isn't there a<lb />
major religion that is life-oriented,<lb />
instead of death-oriented?<lb />
Give mea religion that teaches<lb />
me how to cope with the everyday<lb />
problems that I might encounter<lb />
and I'll follow it forever. Show me<lb />
how to deal with the stress and<lb />
fear in my life and make me<lb />
complete; don't tell me that when<lb />
Idie, I will end up in a better place.<lb />
When I die, it'll be too late for me<lb />
to do anything about where I am.<lb />
That's got to be my biggest<lb />
complaint about the heaven-hell<lb />
concept: by the time I find out<lb />
whether there is a heaven or hell,<lb />
what can I do to change it?<lb />

lack the necessary skills. Recently there<lb />

Nov. 20, O'Rocks hosted a benefit<lb />
concert for the REAL Crisis Center in<lb />
Greenville. The bands that performed<lb />
were The Killkids, Skullbuckie and Rat<lb />
Sided Buffalo. According to Kim<lb />
Lingwood,a representative for theREAL<lb />
Crisis Center, the proceeds from show<lb />
willbeused forpaintingand renovating<lb />
anew location forthecenterdowntown.<lb />
The center is presently located at 312 E.<lb />
10th St. The money will also be used to<lb />
add an extra phone line.<lb />
The REAL Crisis Center is a non-<lb />
profit organization that deals with<lb />
crisis intervention and has been a cor-<lb />
ner stone of the Greenville commu-<lb />
nity for 20 years. REAL offers hotline<lb />
and walk-in counseling for suicide,<lb />
domestic violence and drug abuse.<lb />
The center also offers referrals for 430<lb />
agencies such as Alcoholics Anony-<lb />
mous. Accord ing to Lingwood, 90per-<lb />
centof the center's present volunteers<lb />
are ECU students. Training classes to<lb />
become a volunteer are offered three<lb />
times a year.<lb />
Sponsors of the benefit included<lb />
theHelioesand theIrates,twofrisbee<lb />
teams that are participating in the<lb />
upcoming Ultimax Tournament.<lb />
Other sponsors were Papa Oliver's<lb />
pizzeria, Student Volunteers for REAL<lb />
and WZMB, the campus radio station<lb />
who broadcasted live from the show.<lb />
The bands that offered their tal-<lb />
ent for the benefit displayed genuine<lb />
diversity and entertained the packed<lb />
house for a little over three hours.<lb />
The first band to perform was<lb />
Flat Sided Buffalo, new comers to the<lb />
Greenville scene. Their show was the<lb />
debut performance and judging from<lb />
their response they will most likely be<lb />
back at O'Rocks again in the near fu-<lb />
ture. Flat Sided Buffalo have a strong<lb />
pop sound with a sort of punk-rat<lb />
Benatar vocalist.<lb />
The next band was Skullbuckie, a<lb />
colorfully dark band that threw up an<lb />
hour set that only lacked Vaselineand<lb />
flour.<lb />
The last band to play were Green-<lb />
ville veterans The Killkids. This band,<lb />
for lack of a better comparison, is a<lb />
cross between the la ter two band s wi th<lb />
very smooth dual-guitar melodies,<lb />
and a semi-harsh rhythm section. Ac-<lb />
cording to Dave Mason, lead vocalist<lb />
for The Killkids, this show was the<lb />
band's way of helping a cause that<lb />
they really stand behind and support.<lb />

'Dracula' emphasizes sexuality over Gothic horror<lb />
By Ike Shibley<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />

Mina (Winona Ryder) is seduced by Dracula's (Gary<lb />
Oldman) eternal charms in "Bram Stoker's Dracula<lb />
Bram Stoker wrote his now famous novel<lb />
about vampires in 1897.<lb />
One hundred years has not yet passed since<lb />
its completion yet there seems to be more than a<lb />
hundred illegitimate offspring of this classic.<lb />
"Bram Stoker's Dracula directed by Francis<lb />
Ford Coppola, checks in as the latest entry in the<lb />
vampire saga.<lb />
A survey of films in the past ten years show<lb />
just how fertile the vampire genre is. "The Lost<lb />
Boys "Fright Night" and "Buffy the Vampire<lb />
Slayer" are just a few of the grotesque mutations<lb />
that have been wrought on the vampire legend.<lb />
Coppola claims that his interest in filming<lb />
this vampire story is because a filmic treatment<lb />
of Stoker's original story has never been written.<lb />
What Coppola has created is his own visu-<lb />
ally stunning, sensually erotic and ultimately<lb />
unsatisfying vampire yarn using Stoker's story<lb />
as the framework around which to construct his<lb />
vision.<lb />
The story itself proves interesting, although in<lb />
Coppola's hands the emotional impact becomes<lb />
muted. Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) travels to<lb />
Transylvania to transact a business deal wi th Count<lb />
Dracula (Gary Oldman).<lb />
During the visit he is kept as a prisoner in the<lb />
Count's castle while the Count himself races to<lb />
England to seduce Harker's fiance, Mina (Winona<lb />
Ryder).<lb />
Mina bears a remarkable resemblance to<lb />
Dracula's deceased wife, Elisabetha (also played<lb />
by Ryder). Dracula's wife killed herself after re-<lb />
ceiving false word that her husband had been slain<lb />
in battle.<lb />
Upon learning of the death of his beloved wife,<lb />
Dracula renounced God and began his reign as a<lb />
vampire.<lb />
The story itself has too many supporting char-<lb />
acters.<lb />
Coppola needed to concentrate on the rela-<lb />
tionship of Dracula and Mina if he wanted to<lb />
explore the emotional depths of this tale.<lb />
Instead, Coppola chose to create a showy,<lb />
cinematic story that relies more on MTV than<lb />
Victorian literature.<lb />
He emphasizes the -?xual over the emo-<lb />
tional and the grotesqueness over the Gothic<lb />
horror.<lb />
Some of the supporting characters whocould<lb />
have been eliminated, or at least scaled down,<lb />
are Lucy Westenra (Sadie Frost), Lucy's three<lb />
suitors (Richard E. Grant, Cary Ewles and Bill<lb />
Campbell) and R. M. Renfield (Tom Waits).<lb />
Obviously Coppola wanted to tell a tale of<lb />
visual splendor to titillate the audience's eyes<lb />
and ears.<lb />
In the process he leaves that same audience<lb />
emotionally bankrupt because he exhibits no<lb />
real affection for his characters.<lb />
When Mina is torn between remaining with<lb />
Jonathan in the real world or living forever with<lb />
Dracula in the Netherworld, theaudience should<lb />
be on the edge of their seats.<lb />

DECEMBER 1, 1992<lb />
Continued from page 7<lb />
Instead an emotional detach-<lb />
ment occurs and Mina's choice<lb />
makes no impression on the<lb />
viewer.<lb />
She could just as easily be<lb />
deciding whether to renew an<lb />
option on stock she owns.<lb />
The acting in the film is fine<lb />
but not sensational. Only Gary<lb />
Oldman deserves special men-<lb />
tion, if only for his make-up.<lb />
Oldman plays the young Count<lb />
Dracula in the 15th century, the<lb />
young Count Dracula when he<lb />
woos Mina (as a distinguished<lb />
gentleman), the old Count, the<lb />
werewolf who rapes Lucy and<lb />
the grotesque bat that appears<lb />
near the end of the film.<lb />
Oldman actually brings life<lb />
to each if these incarnations. His<lb />
accentsoundswonderfulandhis<lb />
expressions, even beneath the<lb />
make-up, are quite powerful.<lb />
The setsare remarkable. They<lb />
evoke the gloom of the Castle<lb />
Dracula as well as the splendor of<lb />
turn-of-the-century London.<lb />
Most remarkable of all is the<lb />
cinematography. The shadows<lb />
that move independent of their<lb />
owner ass an eerie touch. The<lb />
camera speeding to different lo-<lb />
cations accentuates the sense of<lb />
urgency in much of the pic'ure.<lb />
Coppola seems to have<lb />
achieved what he set out to do,<lb />
that is to create an eye-catching<lb />
treatment of a horror classic.<lb />
Unfortunately, a treatment<lb />
such as this requires more depth.<lb />
Watching this film is like eat-<lb />
ing ice cream as a main course.<lb />
While experiencing the film<lb />
you feel great but afterwards you<lb />
wonder why you did such a silly<lb />
thing. The mind, like the stomach,<lb />
reeds sustenance.<lb />
Too much junk will rot the<lb />
brain and leave an empty feeling<lb />
where emotions should be.<lb />
Films like "Dracula" rot the<lb />
brain. Therefore, "Dracula"<lb />
should ultimately be dismissed.<lb />

"Getting hurt and growing<lb />

Curry said about his new album<lb />
ft's Only Time.<lb />
"Itneverstops. Lifehurtsand<lb />
you write about it. Maybe it's go-<lb />
ing to make someone else smile,<lb />
you never know.<lb />
"When you're 14 years old,<lb />
life looks pretty grim. Every-<lb />

To understand Curry's mu-<lb />
sic, one must understand the life<lb />
that Curry has lived.<lb />
Although reluctant to talk<lb />

For more info call Bill at<lb />

about his past, Curry did say he<lb />
was kicked out of his home at the<lb />
age of 14. He moved to Reno,<lb />
Nev. and spent his time watching<lb />
older people gamble.<lb />
After he move from Reno,<lb />
Curry jumped backand forth from<lb />
Sacramento to Los Angeles, play-<lb />
ing music with various bands.<lb />
These bands' styles ranged<lb />
from "deathcore metal" to "gut-<lb />
ter funk<lb />
His favorite bands and influ-<lb />
ences were Metallica, Motorhead,<lb />
Seven Seconds, Kiss, ACDC and<lb />
The Beatles.<lb />
Curry now resides in Sacra-<lb />
mento, Caafter yea rsof roaming<lb />
the southwest looking for noth-<lb />
ing in particular.<lb />
After all he has been through,<lb />
Curry's music leaves much to be<lb />
desired. He sings odd, depress-<lb />
ing songs about dead dogs and<lb />
mudpuddles with a voice that<lb />
sounds like a cheap imitation of<lb />
Bob Dylan. If his lyrics were any<lb />
good, it might be a redeeming<lb />
quality and his music may be<lb />
worth listening to.<lb />
Instead, he writes his lyrics<lb />
about how he sees everyday life.<lb />
The lyrics of "It Musta Been<lb />
Jo" describe the decomposition of<lb />
a puppy in graphic detail.<lb />
"It must have been Jo that<lb />
dug up the dog and tore it apart<lb />
all over the lawnIt smelled like<lb />
death so I took a deep breath<lb />

"Everybody perceives it in<lb />
The East Carolinian<lb />

their own way. They can jack off<lb />
to it, I don't care<lb />
It is good that Curry's atti-<lb />
tude towards his music reflects<lb />
that he really does not care what<lb />
people think about his style.<lb />
Unless someone suffers from<lb />
a severe case of manic-depression<lb />
or has had a fifth of Jack Daniels,<lb />
they probably will not appreci-<lb />
ate, or even like, Curry's off-beat<lb />

In fact, Curry's music would<lb />

He who breaks the law: Head Coach Eddie Payne will be running a tight ship as<lb />
they sail intothe Colonial Athletic Association. The season begins tonight in Minges.<lb />
ECU's Wendy Schultz named<lb />
to All-CAA volleyball team<lb />
Pirate basketball coach Eddie Payne faces<lb />
a difficult season this year, as he will try to lead<lb />
East Carolina intoatoughCAA conference and<lb />
improve on last year's 10-18 season. In his<lb />
second year of coachingat EastCarolina,Payne<lb />
faces the difficult task of building a winning<lb />
basketball program, a luxury ECU has not<lb />
enjoyed forovera decade. But Payneisoptimis-<lb />
tic despite the poor tradition and said, with the<lb />
new offense the Pirates have adopted, he ex-<lb />
pects this year's unit to be exciting to watch in<lb />
conference action<lb />
"We're running a motion offense that is<lb />
geared towards the jump shot he said. "It<lb />
encourages and rewards team play. I believe it<lb />
is conducive to the personnel we have here.<lb />
What that will translate into as far as wins and<lb />
losses, I'm not sure, but I believe well be able to<lb />
compete Payne said he is extremely pleased<lb />
with the effort he has seen his players put forth<lb />
in early practices, and has already seen an<lb />
upgrade in player intensity from last year.<lb />
"Some of the new players have tremen-<lb />
dous drive and ambition he said. "I have<lb />
noticed increased consistency from our veter-<lb />
ans and we have made great improvements in<lb />
conditioning and strength gains Payne said<lb />
that the Pirates' talent level had increased this<lb />
year, and that the return of seven experienced<lb />
players will provide the team with tremendous<lb />
opportunity. Payne said he will rely on these<lb />
veterans for on-court leadership.<lb />
"In practiceLester(Lyons)and James Lewis<lb />
have provided consistent, error-free play that<lb />
will be needed as the year goes on"<lb />
Payne said he is enthusiastic about the<lb />
progress center Ike Copeland is making from<lb />
last season's knee injury on Jan. 15. Copeland<lb />
was out for the last 16 games of the season.<lb />
"As Ike gets moreconfident, 1 hope to see<lb />
more production from him Payne said. "He<lb />
is starting to get back to his rhythm While<lb />
Payne is encouraged by the attitudes of his<lb />
veterans, he will rely on his new players to<lb />
make immediate contributions to the team.<lb />
Payne mentions newcomer Simpson<lb />
Toli ver, who could play as forward or center,<lb />
as the team's most athletic player. The 6-foot-<lb />
8-inch freshman will back up Copeland or<lb />
Gill. The Pirates are also fortunate to have<lb />
recruited Don Douglas, who at 6-feet-10-<lb />
inches, 220 lbs. is the Pirates' largest player.<lb />
Douglas will likely see action in the middle<lb />
this year. Payne said the improvements that<lb />
lured Douglas to ECU produced the recruit-<lb />
ing success the school enjoyed mis year.<lb />
"There isa strongphilosophical commit-<lb />
ment at this university to allow student-ath-<lb />
letes anopportunitytograduate'Payne said.<lb />
"At ECU, there is a sense of caring for them as<lb />
people, wewantthemtoachieve. Graduating<lb />
players is simply the right thing to do, it's the<lb />
good business thing to do for the commu-<lb />
nity Payne said that this commitment is<lb />
what drew him towards ECU, along with the<lb />
commitment to develop first-class athletic fa-<lb />
cilities. "We now have one of the finest sports<lb />
medicine facilities in thecountry. This helps to<lb />
raise the perception of our program<lb />
Payne said tha t the team and administra-<lb />
tion at ECU is working hard to take steps to<lb />
become a championship-caliber program. By<lb />
projecting enthusiasm with the team and<lb />
through the program, Payne hopes he can<lb />
speed up the process and motivate everyone<lb />
involved with ECU basketball.<lb />
Payne hasacatch phrase thatsymbolizes<lb />
this motivational philosophy, "Enthusiasm is<lb />
caught, not taught"<lb />

Women's soccer ties to finish season<lb />
By Jaimeson Pierce<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The East Carolina Women's Soccer<lb />
Team finished its most successful season<lb />
ever on November 22 as they tied the<lb />
UNC Chapel Hill Club 1-1.<lb />
ECU trudged through the rain-<lb />
soaked field and took an early 1-0 lead<lb />
as forward Amy Warren scored her<lb />
sixth goal of the season.<lb />
The Pirates continued to pound at<lb />
the Tar Heel goal but many shots sailed<lb />
just wide of the net. Fullbacks Court-<lb />
ney Bucka and Missy Cone, as well as<lb />
forward Toni DeRose, struck near<lb />
misses. ECU kept the pressure on,<lb />
led by halfbacks Peg Rustand and<lb />
Heather Seanor. Time after time,<lb />
UNC's attack was shut down by the<lb />
Pirate defense led by goalkeeper<lb />
Jaime Pierce and fullback Katy<lb />
McNiff. With just two min-<lb />
utes left in the game, a<lb />
UNC forward broke<lb />
through and tied the score<lb />
ECU was scheduled to<lb />
finish out their fall season at home<lb />
on December 6, but N.C. State can<lb />
celled due to their exam schedule. The<lb />
Pirates' final record was 6-4-2, with<lb />
early season losses to Virginia Tech<lb />
and Raleigh.<lb />
"I can't express how proud I am of this<lb />
team Coach Chip Hudson said. "They,<lb />
vorked extremely hard all season, and<lb />
became a cohesive unit as the season<lb />
progressed<lb />
The Women's Soccer Team<lb />
will play a spring schedule<lb />
starting in February, and they<lb />
will look to improve on their<lb />
record and win their division<lb />
in the North Carolina Women's Soc-<lb />
