Weapons incidents<lb />
on campus increase<lb />
By Joe Horst<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The campus police have en-<lb />
countered an increasing number<lb />
of incidents involving weapons<lb />
over the last two years.<lb />
Last year, an ECU student<lb />
was shot by another student in<lb />
Garrett Hall when one of the stu-<lb />
dents was showing off his 9 mm<lb />
pistol. Also, non-students have<lb />
been stopped on campus and dis-<lb />
covered with weapons in their<lb />
possession.<lb />
"Weapons of any sort are<lb />
illegal on college or university<lb />
property said Ronald Speier,<lb />
dean of student life.<lb />
Along with a university<lb />
policy forbidding the possession<lb />
or use-of firearms, a North Caro-<lb />
lina General Statute exists that<lb />
also makes possession unlawful.<lb />
According to N.C.G.S. 14-<lb />
269.2, "it shall be unlawful for<lb />
any person to possess, carry,<lb />
whether openly or concealed, any<lb />
gun or any other weapon of<lb />
like kind" on property controlled<lb />
or owned by a university.<lb />
Weapons listed in the stat-<lb />
ute include BB and pellet guns,<lb />
nitroglycerine, springloaded pro-<lb />
jectile knives, detonators and<lb />
fuses for explosion of TNT, leaded<lb />
canes, brass knuckles and mar-<lb />
rial-arts related weaponry.<lb />
Students enrolled inarchery<lb />
classes may possess arrows, but<lb />
they must inform their residence<lb />
hall advisor prior to storing them<lb />
in their room.<lb />
Campus property includes<lb />
all of ECU's main campus, the<lb />
medical school, hospital grounds<lb />
and other buildings in Greenville,<lb />
such as the Chancellor's house,<lb />
that are ECU-controlled.<lb />
The Department of Public<lb />
Safety has jurisdiction over the<lb />
ECU campus as well as 10th and<lb />
Fifth streets in Greenville,<lb />
"We have joint jurisdiction<lb />
with other law enforcement agen-<lb />
cies over any streets that are ad-<lb />
joining campus said Chief Ron<lb />
Avery of Public Safety.<lb />
Any individual stopped on<lb />
campus and found in possession<lb />
of a weapon can be subject to<lb />
disciplinary actions including,<lb />
but not limited to, a fine, commu-<lb />
nity service andor suspension<lb />

Brits, Americans square off<lb />
for Quiz Bowl championship<lb />
By Chas Mitch'l<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
No controversy, no heated<lb />
discussion and no upset competi-<lb />
tors. This time.<lb />
On Saturday, the Student<lb />
Union Committee held it's an-<lb />
nual All-Campus College Bowl<lb />
at Mendenhall Student Center.<lb />
This year's field of teams con-<lb />
sisted of a myriad of students.<lb />
With nine teams competing for<lb />
top honors, the championship<lb />
matched featured No. 1 Pick-Up<lb />
verses Eureka.<lb />
Last semester, heated de-<lb />
bates and bellowingshouts of pro-<lb />
test overshadowed the event.<lb />
However, this year's participants<lb />
seemed to have had a more re-<lb />
laxed competitive approach.<lb />
"Competition wise, this was<lb />
a pretty good tournament said<lb />
Jamey Tisdale, a member of the<lb />
Phi Sigma Pi entry.<lb />
No. 2 Pick-Up, comprised<lb />
of Luong Ngo, Robert Joyner,<lb />
Curtis Griffin and Dana Monson,<lb />
finished the double-elimination<lb />
tournament in third place.<lb />
"It was fun there were a<lb />
lot of good teams" said Joyner, a<lb />
member of the 1992 ECU Quiz<lb />
Bowl All-Stars.<lb />
The championship match<lb />
pitted Eureka (a Great Britain ex-<lb />
change student team) against No.<lb />
1 Pick-up (a Student Union Com-<lb />
mittee entry). Eureka, surfacing<lb />
from the losers bracket, ran<lb />
against a buzz saw in the form of<lb />
No. 1 Pick-Up.<lb />
"Those guys were good, they<lb />
had pretty good chemistry says<lb />
one competitor of No. 1 Pick-Up.<lb />

The Inter-Fraternity Coun-<lb />
cil congratulated all East Carolina<lb />
campus fraternities for an excep-<lb />
tionally good rush last week.<lb />
Fraternity numbers are up<lb />
20 percent from last year. There<lb />
are presently 280 men who ac-<lb />
cepted bids and are pledging.<lb />
"I've been here five years<lb />
and these are the highest num-<lb />
bers I've seen said IFC presi-<lb />
dent Tommy Spaulding.<lb />
Spaulding attributes this accom-<lb />
plishment to a group effort by the<lb />
Inter-fraternity council.<lb />
iFC contains 41 members<lb />
including five executives, the<lb />
president of each of the 18 frater-<lb />
nities and one representative from<lb />
each as well. The group is similar<lb />
to the Panhellenic Council that<lb />
oversees campus sororities.<lb />
Up until two years ago, the<lb />
council served mostly as a "judi-<lb />
cial review" for fraternities with<lb />
few inter-fraternal relations.<lb />
Spaulding and the council have<lb />
worked to change this image.<lb />
Spaulding said, "When I was first<lb />
elected, I wanted to do more to<lb />
make the Greek system strong in-<lb />
stead of just using IFC as a judicial<lb />
body over all the fraternities<lb />
Although IFC enforces such<lb />
rules as those against fraternity<lb />
hazing and supporting alcohol<lb />
policies, its efforts go further. To<lb />
overcome the segmentation within<lb />
the Greek system, the council is<lb />
working hard to increase relations<lb />
among fraternities and sororities.<lb />
Spaulding's first goal was "for all<lb />
fraternity presidents to become<lb />
friends He said he is also work-<lb />
ing toward establishing a work-<lb />
ing relationship with Panhellenic.<lb />

ISU professor sues school<lb />
An Iowa State University professor is suing several school<lb />
administrators and the Iowa Board of Regents after he was barred<lb />
from using a book he wrote as a required text in a class. John<lb />
Strong, an associate professor in human development and family<lb />
studies, claimed his First Amendment rights were violated be-<lb />
cause he couldn't use his book, "Unlocking the Communication<lb />
Puzzle as a primary text in his course. A student complaint in<lb />
1991 brought the matter to the attention of school administrators,<lb />
and a department committee later voted that the book should not<lb />
be used as primary text. It was also determined the book con-<lb />
tained no bibliography or cited scholars. "(The professor) feels<lb />
strongly that the university is interfering with his rights to select<lb />
his own materials said Anthony Renzo, Strong's attorney.<lb />

in 1990, offers talented graduates of Hartford city high schools a<lb />

A University of Michigan study has found that community<lb />

ings that found students who attended a community college area<lb />
at a "definite disadvantage" in earning a degree or going to<lb />
graduate school. Valerie Lee, an associate professor of education<lb />
who conducted the study, tracked 422 students who entered<lb />

October 1. 1992<lb />
Opinion<lb />
Page 4<lb />
Weapons policy protects students<lb />
Reports where students and non-stu-<lb />
dents are in possession of weapons on cam-<lb />
pus have increased substantially in the past<lb />
few years. Stricter enforcement and better<lb />
options for legal weapon owners are sorely<lb />
needed to combat this serious problem.<lb />
Last year, a student was accidentally<lb />
shot in Garrett Hall when his friend was<lb />
showing off his gun. There have also been<lb />
incidents where non-students have been<lb />
stopped by the campus police and discov-<lb />
ered with weapons on their persons.<lb />
Presently, a North Carolina General Stat-<lb />
ute exists that strictly prohibits weapons on<lb />
any state-owned property. In part, the stat-<lb />
ute states: . it shall be unlawful for any<lb />
person to possess, carry, whether openly or<lb />
concealed, any gun or any other weapon<lb />
of like kind in any public or private<lb />
school campus or other property owned<lb />
For ECU, this encompasses all of central<lb />
campus, the medical school and hospital<lb />
grounds and other related campus houses<lb />
in Greenville. If someone is stopped in one<lb />
of these areas, and is in possession of a<lb />
weapon, heshe would be subject to not<lb />
only sanctions on the university level, but<lb />
also on the state level.<lb />
The only exception to this university<lb />
policy is the owning of mace by individuals.<lb />
A SIDEWARDS GLANCE<lb />
All other weaponsincluding knives, TNT,<lb />
ni troglycerine and other martial-arts related<lb />
materials are forbidden on campus and<lb />
penalties start at possible expulsion from<lb />
the residence halls for residential students.<lb />
The Department of University Police<lb />
offers an alternative for hunters. They are<lb />
allowed to check in their rifles and guns at<lb />
no cost and can check them out again for<lb />
private use. Weapons will be logged, stored<lb />
and given out to the owners when they<lb />
leave campus.<lb />
Campus crime is an important issue in<lb />
today's college societies and the possession<lb />
of weapons only compounds the existing<lb />
problems.<lb />
The potential for harm is greatly magni-<lb />
fied when a weapon is introduced into a<lb />
situation and most introductions end in<lb />
bloodshed. Strict policies and even stricter<lb />
enforcement are a necessity to stay in pace<lb />
with the ever-increasing threat of violence.<lb />
Ignorance of the law can now not be<lb />
used as an excuse. Though the right to pro-<lb />
tect yourself is an integral part of our society<lb />
today, the monumental abuse of this right<lb />
dictates some regulations.<lb />
These statutes both state and univer-<lb />
sity based don't take the right away, only<lb />
protect against misuse.<lb />
JOE Of ALL TRADES<lb />
Horst<lb />
Stereotypes are the root of racist problems<lb />
By David J. Jones<lb />
The "power" of change is in the voters<lb />
I recently had the opportu-<lb />
nity to work with the Young<lb />
Democrats in setting up for the<lb />
political rally at which vice presi-<lb />
dential candidate Al Gore spoke<lb />
at Monday.<lb />
Part of that work included<lb />
handingout flyers to make people<lb />
aware of the fact that Gore was<lb />
coming and trying to get students<lb />
to go and show their support<lb />
When you are in a position of deal-<lb />
ing with the public so directly,<lb />
you expect to have to deal with all<lb />
kinds of radicals, both right and<lb />
left. With this knowledge as our<lb />
armor we went out to face the<lb />
masses and to distribute our fly-<lb />
ers.<lb />
What we met was not an on-<lb />
slaught of people ready to tell us<lb />
how wrong we were or how much<lb />
better their ideas were than ours.<lb />
We met lots of people who had no<lb />
opinion. They did not care who<lb />
was running in the election. They<lb />
certainly did not care to hear what<lb />
Gore had to say. We met a few<lb />
people who were not even sure<lb />
who Al Gore was much less what<lb />
his and Clinton's platform was.<lb />
Many people claimed to be<lb />
Republican but had no idea what<lb />
the Republican platform was.<lb />
These same people had no more<lb />
brains man to tell us mat the Demo-<lb />
crats were nothing but a bunch of<lb />
"liberals thathad been on the loose<lb />
too long and needed to be shut<lb />
down<lb />
Believe it or not folks, these<lb />
are the people that made me<lb />
happy. Why, you aslc? Because,<lb />
friends, at least these people had<lb />
something to say to us. As 1 said<lb />
earlier, most people greeted us<lb />
with blank stares. I began to feel<lb />
that all of our work to raise inter-<lb />
est was a futile gesture because<lb />
even if we could get people to go<lb />
to the rally, what good would<lb />
they do us on election day? The<lb />
answer is none. Have smear cam-<lb />
paigns and government inaction<lb />
turned so many people away from<lb />
politics?<lb />
Apathy is- not the answer to<lb />
solving problems within the land<lb />
thatyou live. If it were, there would<lb />
be no good in the world There<lb />
would be no care societies and<lb />
nobody willing to help fellow in-<lb />
dividuals. Most importantly ,there<lb />
would be no change. Change is<lb />
what makes this world work. Con-<lb />
stant change is an excepted part of<lb />
life.<lb />
No, this is not a pro Clinton<lb />
article. Even though I am a regis-<lb />
tered Democrat, lean see that the<lb />
concept of change for change's<lb />
sake is an idiotic one. What 1 am<lb />
saying is if you are not registered<lb />
to vote, get registered. You, as<lb />
voter do make a difference.<lb />
Yeah, 1 know the electoral sys-<lb />
temhasa few shortcomings. Many<lb />
people feel it is worthless because<lb />
it is such an indirect process of<lb />
voting on a president. That is not<lb />
an excuse to keep your voice si-<lb />
lent. If you don't like the system,<lb />
do something about it. You have<lb />
to put up with enough things in<lb />
life that you can't control. Why<lb />
put up with things thatyou can, to<lb />
a certain extent, control? The an-<lb />
swer again is that you should not.<lb />
Personally I see some real<lb />
faults with both candidates. 1 don't<lb />
care much for Perot either, but I<lb />
am still going to vote. Even if I<lb />
wind up writing in a candidate of<lb />
my choice,atleastlcansaylvoted.<lb />
I can say that I am unhappy<lb />
with the current system and that 1<lb />
voted against it. You would be<lb />
amazed at how much better that<lb />
can make you feel. Rather than<lb />
feeling the reluctance of realizing<lb />
that you could have made a differ-<lb />
ence, you feel the security of know-<lb />
ing that at least you tried.<lb />
This concept does not ju st ap-<lb />
ply to the presidential race. Within<lb />
the next couple of years there will<lb />
be an estimated 100 seats being<lb />
turned over in Congress.<lb />
You remember Congress,<lb />
don't you? They're the people that<lb />
change your life every time they<lb />
pass a law. I sound a bit sarcastic<lb />
here, but I'm doing it for a reason.<lb />
Go ask your best friend or your<lb />
roommate who is up for congres-<lb />
sional reelection in the next;few<lb />
years. Somebody out there write<lb />
me. I'd like to know what the per-<lb />
centages are on who did know<lb />
and who did not know. I'd be<lb />
willing to bet that the vast major-<lb />
ity did not know.<lb />
Why is this? Why don't we<lb />
care? Apathy will do no good.<lb />
You were given a mind, why<lb />
not use it? No, I 'm not saying agree<lb />
with me. I'm saying form your<lb />
own opinions, research things,<lb />
find out just what the heck is go-<lb />
ing on out there in our world.<lb />
If you disagree with things try<lb />
to change them for the better. Even<lb />
if you don't get what you want<lb />
done you will have started some-<lb />
thing. Voting is just a small part of<lb />
this process of changing things. If<lb />
you don't agree with what Bush<lb />
stands for thenJon't vote for him.<lb />
If you don't like Clinton's ideas<lb />
don'tvoteforhim.Butpleasevote;<lb />
voice your opinion.<lb />

Good.<lb />
Put aside your righteous in-<lb />
dignation for just one second, your<lb />
cries of "Who does this guy think<lb />
he is?" and let me tell you what all<lb />
of these people have in common<lb />
with each other.<lb />
Stereotypes.<lb />
Anyone who tells you that<lb />
they don't have a prejudiced bone<lb />
in their body is not really trying to<lb />
convince you they're also try-<lb />
ing to convince themselves. In this<lb />
day and age, it's damn-near im-<lb />
possible to subscribe to some (if<lb />
not all) of these generalizations. A<lb />
person may get them from their<lb />
parents, their grandpa rentshell,<lb />
even their great-grandparents. No<lb />
one can really trace exactly where<lb />
bias and prejudice begins, but this<lb />
is as good a place as any to start.<lb />
The South is infamous for<lb />
being the hotbed for racial tension<lb />
and prejudice. Don't let the people<lb />
tell you that blacks are on an equal<lb />
fooringhere in the lovely Emerald<lb />
Qtyjust go down to any one of<lb />
the local bars downtown and you<lb />
can count the number of African-<lb />
Americans on both hands.<lb />
How many people, when<lb />
walking down the street, have<lb />
crossed to the other side when<lb />
they saw a black person coming<lb />
towards them? That's not the only<lb />
area where African-Americans<lb />
have been stereotyped. From the<lb />
size of a black man's sexual organ<lb />
to his (supposed) superhuman<lb />
ability to play any sport, preju-<lb />
dices abound for anyone with dark<lb />
skin.<lb />
Mind you, African-Ameri-<lb />
cans aren't the only people stereo-<lb />
typed just the most visibleones.<lb />
Today, you can be stuffed into a<lb />
nice, neat cubby-hole based on<lb />
your sex alone. Allow me to paint<lb />
youasweetlittlepicru re and you'll<lb />
soon see.<lb />
 "Ward, 1 think you need<lb />
to talk to the Beaver<lb />
"Hi, honey, I'm home The<lb />
tired, hard-working man throws<lb />
his suit coat on to the easy chair<lb />
and tosses his suitcase on the cof-<lb />
fee table, mindless of the new<lb />
waxing that his wife has given it.<lb />
"How was your day at work,<lb />
dear?" His wife, clad in a check-<lb />
ered apron with a spot of flour on<lb />
her nose, leans forward and kisses<lb />
him chastely on the cheek. She<lb />
hands him the daily newspaper<lb />
and stands ready to perform any<lb />
feat of derring-do that her man<lb />
might ask of her.<lb />
"Oh, you know, the same<lb />
old 9 to 5 routine, nothing spe-<lb />
cial he answers, knowing that of;<lb />
course his wife would never be<lb />
capable of understanding what<lb />
real work is. He reclines back in<lb />
his La-Z-Boy, opens the newspa-<lb />
per with an official-sounding<lb />
rustle and asks the inevitable ques<lb />
tion, "So, what's for dinner?"<lb />
Put the weapon down and<lb />
hear me out.<lb />
Now that I've fully offended<lb />
half of this paper's readership with<lb />
my sarcastic segue, let me wrap<lb />
this up and make my point. It<lb />
doesn't matter what your sex is or<lb />
what your religious beliefs are <lb />
we're all in the same boat here,<lb />
people. This tired old stubborn-<lb />
ness to adhere to outdated beliefs<lb />
only makes one look stupid and<lb />
idiotic. There is no master race, no<lb />
Jewish (or Japanese, or whoever it<lb />
is now) plot to overthrow the<lb />
world we're all just trying to<lb />
live our lives and get through one<lb />
dayata time. Giving any credence<lb />
to the drivel that is spouted by<lb />
these hate groups and religious<lb />
sects only promotes more of it<lb />
Give mem an audience and they'll<lb />
go on forever.<lb />
Diverseness and differences<lb />
are what has made America what<lb />
it is today. A nation that recog-<lb />
nizes that not one single belief is<lb />
the right and only one. So when<lb />
you find yourself subscribing to<lb />
some prejudicial and biased opin-r<lb />
ion and you don't even remember<lb />
where you got it from, take a<lb />
minute and think about it.<lb />
Are they any different from<lb />
you;<lb />
I don't think so.<lb />

the Dead Sea Scrolls grasped in<lb />
my sweating palms instead of a<lb />
Chapel Hill Alu<lb />
While in Greenville this past<lb />
weekend for a friend's wedding<lb />
(Sept. 19), we picked up our first-<lb />
ever copy of The East Carolinian.<lb />
As students of The University of<lb />
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, we<lb />
were both impressed and disap-<lb />
pointed with your paper. We<lb />
found the layout and news com-<lb />
mendable for a campus paper. We<lb />
did, however, find one particular<lb />
column disturbing.<lb />
In David Jones' "A Bit<lb />
O'Thought" column (Sept. 17) we<lb />
found just that; only a Jit. Mr.<lb />
Jones described an "election" a<lb />
few years ago at Chapel Hill for<lb />
Student Body President. We don't<lb />
know which Chapel Hill Mr. Jones<lb />
was in mat year or what election<lb />
he was describing. Knowing most<lb />
daily rag read a little, and then<lb />
I return the paper and get my li-<lb />
cense back. And, you guessed it,<lb />
she writes again.<lb />
1 try to get my schedule<lb />
changed. After walking endless<lb />
miles and being told no, no, no,<lb />
no; I go to the Chancellor's office.<lb />
The secratary spots my bookbag<lb />
a critical mistake on my part <lb />
and she tells me, "the Chancellor<lb />
doesn't meet with students (On<lb />
campus, the book bag is equiva-<lb />
lent to the yellow star of david in<lb />
Nazi Germany: a definite sign of<lb />
mental weakness, moral deprav-<lb />
ity and social inferiority to most of<lb />
the beauracracy and the profes-<lb />
sors.) I hear a voice. Does he exist?<lb />
I think he's in his lair, shoulct I<lb />
chance it a shout, a bold en-<lb />
trance?<lb />
No. I make a few more feeble<lb />
attempts to get my schedule<lb />
changed, but my heart isn't in it. 1<lb />
give it up failure.<lb />
Now this is a great cumber-<lb />
some beauracracy or what? Where<lb />
no one has any authority except to<lb />
enforce the rules and regulations<lb />
of the beauracracy except the<lb />
Chancellor, and he is unavailable.<lb />
This letter is funny, isn't it?<lb />
Albert A. Joseph<lb />
Junior<lb />
mni remember SGA election<lb />
of the past decade's SBPs, it cer-<lb />
tainly wasn't the election I think<lb />
he wanted to describe or any re-<lb />
cent elections.<lb />
To borrow Mr. Jones' phrase,<lb />
"in a nutshell" he's wrong. Re-<lb />
membering the election and hav-<lb />
ing checked the documents, it can<lb />
be summarized as follows. There<lb />
really was a candidate named<lb />
Mark and one named Bill. So<lb />
much for anonymity! Mark, a<lb />
black student and friend of ours,<lb />
and Bill were runningagainst three<lb />
other students. To our knowledge<lb />
party affiliation was not, as Mr.<lb />
Jones suggests, a factor in the race.<lb />
One candidate lost who wanted to<lb />
fill The Tit with water and a foun-<lb />
tain, another friend John (Bill, re-<lb />
member him) lost after a strong<lb />
bid, and Jonathan just plain lost.<lb />
Mark and the real Bill did get into<lb />
a runoff. Bill was elected Presi-<lb />
dent, not anyone else, brought up<lb />
onchargesofdefacingjohn's signs<lb />
and was eventually acquitted by<lb />
the student court. There was never<lb />
anyone replaced. Nor was Mark<lb />
ever charged or rumored to have<lb />
funnelled money to his campaign<lb />
from campus funds. Your memory<lb />
isn't very good Mr. Jones.<lb />
To our friends at ECU, we<lb />
hope the rest of the article was not<lb />
flawed as its beginning. Other-<lb />
wise, we enjoyed the paper and<lb />
look forward to our next visit to<lb />
Pirate county.<lb />

Artist exhibits drawings, illustrations<lb />
By Mike Harrison<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
An ECU visiting artist is mak-<lb />
ing headlines in Washington, D.C<lb />
for a new exhibit thathas run through<lb />
the month of September.<lb />
Aglowingreview appeared in a<lb />
Washington, D.C,newspaper maga-<lb />
zineaboutCatherineWalker'swork.<lb />
The review read, in part, "Walker's<lb />
visions of light and movement ex-<lb />
amine sensuality, spirituality and the<lb />
dichotomy of human consciousness,<lb />
revealing a peculiar balance of real<lb />
and ethereal worlds<lb />
The self-deprecating Walker<lb />
guffawed when reading about her<lb />
works being, according to the re-<lb />
viewer, "a mastery of light and<lb />
shadow<lb />
Her works, particularly her<lb />
lithographs, are strong light and<lb />
shadow images thatmanage to radi-<lb />
ate a subtle, earthy glow.<lb />
Human bodies make up a large<lb />
portion of Walker's subjects for her<lb />
lithographs. The bodies frequently<lb />
come together in her works in com-<lb />
plicated, sometimes unclear visions.<lb />
Walker found her way to the<lb />
D.C. exhibit through the help of a<lb />
friend in New York. The friend told<lb />
her about a woman from Washing-<lb />
ton who wanted to start a gallery<lb />
ard would soon be searching<lb />
through New York for young,<lb />
emerging artists. Walker sent some<lb />
of her works to the woman. Feed-<lb />
back was favorable,andWalkerwas<lb />
then given a one-person show in<lb />
1991.<lb />
The current exhibit features 21<lb />
of Walker's drawings and nine of<lb />
her lithographs. The gallery has sev-<lb />
eral large showing rooms, which<lb />
display the work of vai ious artists.<lb />
Walker spends a huge amount<lb />
of time in her studio. She said she<lb />
loves to do her artwork, but added,<lb />
'Til do anything to procrastinate<lb />
Walker acknowledges a strong<lb />
interest in her work as a teacher, a job<lb />
which at first intimidated her.<lb />
She said she thinks people con-<lb />
sis ten tly see herasbeingself-assured;<lb />
but the thought of standing in front<lb />
of a group of students to perform her<lb />
teaching ritual scared her a lot at<lb />
first<lb />
Walker said her job experience<lb />
here has opened her eyes about as-<lb />
pects of teaching she never thought<lb />
about before.<lb />
"It takes an amazing amount of<lb />
energy to teach. 1 remember as a<lb />
student how hard I was working<lb />
and now I can look back at that time<lb />
and realize that I hardly recognized<lb />
what hard work was.<lb />
"It's amazing teaching begin-<lb />
ning students who know very little<lb />
because they improvesofast. It'sjust<lb />
really neat to see and they could<lb />
really get off on seeing how much<lb />
they improve<lb />
Walker was bom in London and<lb />
went to art school there for a year.<lb />
Twelve to 14 hours a day of school<lb />
was the norm and grades were non-<lb />
existent There was no pressure to<lb />
do the work because everyone had a<lb />
passionate interest in his or her work.<lb />
Walker said success in art de-<lb />
pends a lot on luck, but added, "You<lb />
can make your own luck by sending<lb />
stuff out all the time, by being made<lb />
as visibleas possibleYou start to be<lb />
recognized<lb />
Her works, particularly lier lithographs, are<lb />
strong light and shadow images that manage<lb />
to radiate a subtle, earthy glozv.<lb />

Storyteller lectures on Appalachian Indians<lb />
By David Jones<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The Iroquois Indians and Joe<lb />
Bruchac what a combination!<lb />
Bruchac, a storyteller, started<lb />
off his Sept. 23 show with a few-<lb />
poems that have been published in<lb />
various magazines. "Transplanting<lb />
Trees" was about how life comes<lb />
from life and that when you trans-<lb />
plant a tree in order to save it, you<lb />
are preserving a literal jewel of the<lb />
earth.<lb />
Bruchac began the f i rst of many<lb />
short stories of the evening with<lb />
"The Story of the Peacemakers It<lb />
was a story of three Indians who<lb />
went around to the five major In-<lb />
dian nations of the northern Appa-<lb />
lachian mountains. They were able<lb />
to sway every leader to follow their<lb />
cause of peace except one warrior<lb />
chief. When all forms of reason went<lb />
for naught in terms of a persuasive<lb />
argument, the three Indians wrote<lb />
and sang a song to the chief. He was<lb />
so moved thatheimmediatelymade<lb />
peace with the other four tribes and<lb />
wenton to form the Leagueof Peace<lb />
which lasts through today. Oneside<lb />
of the American quarter pictures an<lb />
eagle holding arrows in its claws.<lb />
The arrows are representative of<lb />
the League of Peace showing that<lb />
five arrows bound together are<lb />
much stronger that one individual<lb />
arrow.<lb />
Bruchac then went into the ex-<lb />
tensive story behind the "Trail of<lb />
Tears" and the famous Apache<lb />
warrior Geronimo.<lb />
Many memorable quotes came<lb />
from Bruchac, including"Anything<lb />
in moderation is good, except<lb />
death He also spent a portion of<lb />
theevening reading selections from<lb />
many of his publications. He then<lb />
proceeded to throw copies of these<lb />
publications to the audience. He<lb />
did this in a manner not unlike the<lb />
way a drummer of a band throws<lb />
his or her sticks into a crowd after a<lb />
show.<lb />
Bruchac also sang songs. He<lb />
even tried to teach the audience an<lb />
Ind ian song. There was a rule estab-<lb />
lished at the beginning of the show<lb />
that whenever Bruchac said "Ho<lb />
the audience was to immediately<lb />
say "Hey It served to keep those<lb />
who were only partially interested<lb />
in the show very awake and alert.<lb />
Bruchac finished off theevening<lb />
with two poems.Thesecond of these<lb />
was "Birdfoot's Grampa Birdfoot<lb />
felt that his grandfather was intol-<lb />
erable because onenightwhen they<lb />
were driving home in the rain,<lb />
Grandpa insisted on stopping the<lb />
car every time he saw a frog to assist<lb />
it in crossing the street. Birdfoot<lb />
insisted to his grandfather that they<lb />
were in a hurry and simply did not<lb />
have the time tq stop for every frog.<lb />
Grandpa replied that the frogs had<lb />
places to go also and that humans<lb />
had no right to interfere with them.<lb />
This poem exemplified Bruchac's<lb />
attitude towards wildlife.<lb />

While bungee jumpingis fairly<lb />

an island in the Sou th Pacific within<lb />
a band of Vanitu Indians. They<lb />
would jump off bamboo towers<lb />
with vines tied around their ankles<lb />
to prove their "right to manhood<lb />
Bungee jumping then moved<lb />
to Australia and was brought to the<lb />
United States in 1985 by Peter and<lb />

Lawrence Lasker and Walter<lb />
F. Parkes, the Academy-Award<lb />
nominated writers of War Games,<lb />
wrote Sneakers with thehelp of Phil<lb />
Alden Robinson.<lb />
"In the 1960s, no one could<lb />
have anticipated what a powerful<lb />
tool the computer would be, or<lb />
how dependent the world would<lb />
become on it for storage and ma-<lb />
nipulation of information said<lb />
Parkes.<lb />
"For as much good as it would<lb />
contribute, the computer would<lb />
also present us with a tremendous<lb />
potential for crime. Suddenly, no<lb />
information is really secure, and<lb />
we are all faced with a threat to our<lb />
privacy<lb />
The idea for Stieakers originated<lb />
at a computer convention in 1981.<lb />
It was there that Parkes and Lasker<lb />
first heard the term "Sneakers<lb />
which referred to IBM's "kid pro-<lb />
grammers<lb />
Parkes and Lasker were later<lb />
told by a small computer maga-<lb />
zine editor the term was a label for<lb />
hired experts who test the securi-<lb />
ties of companies by secretly break-<lb />
ing into them.<lb />
Robinson, Parkes and Lasker<lb />
collaborated to write the draft of<lb />
the story. "The original idea was a<lb />
high-tech Dirty Dozen said<lb />
Robinson. "It didn't occur to us<lb />
that it was taking a long time until<lb />
we were about six years into the<lb />
project<lb />
The plot changed often<lb />
through the years as research con-<lb />
tinued and new political climates<lb />
emerged. "Weall loved caper films<lb />
and we never got bored with the<lb />
characters said Robinson. "But<lb />
our storylines ranged form "Three<lb />
Days of the Hacker' to 'Raiders of<lb />
the Lost Computer<lb />
Other real inventions used in<lb />
the movie include a Braille com-<lb />
puter keyboard, an access control<lb />
system known as the "Man Trap"<lb />
and a voice stress analyzer.<lb />
Sneakers also stars Timothy<lb />
Busfield and George Heam. It is<lb />
produced by Parkes and Lasker.<lb />
Branford Marsalis ("The To-<lb />
night Show with Jay Leno") pro-<lb />
vided the sounds of the soprano<lb />

The fine art of being a zebra<lb />
Recreational Services<lb />
There isalotmoretobeinga zebra<lb />
(also known as referees or officials)<lb />
than dressing funny and blowing an<lb />
annoying whistle. Zebras have many<lb />
more responsibilities. In fact, they do<lb />
all of them in the same instant. The job<lb />
of a zebra is not only to enforce the<lb />
rulesof the game, but they also have to<lb />
ensure that game conditions are equal<lb />
for both teams, make sure that playing<lb />
conditions and environment are safe,<lb />
control the flow of the contest, and<lb />
watch for un-sportsman-like behav-<lb />
ior and apply penalties when neces-<lb />
sary. Pretty impressive for those of us<lb />
who can't walk and chew gum at the<lb />
same time!<lb />
The most important aspect to re-<lb />
member about officiating is that ze-<lb />
bras are not your enemy. They are<lb />
there for your well-being and that of<lb />
fhegameitself.Sometimesit'shard to<lb />
look at it that way when you feel that<lb />
they have made a bad call, but no one<lb />
is perfect and zebras can't see every-<lb />
thing. Without them, sports would<lb />
be so unorganized that it wouldn't be<lb />
enjoyable. Zebras are your friends.<lb />
Not just anyone can be a zebra. It<lb />
takes special qualities to endure the<lb />
warm tempera hi res and hot tempers.<lb />
It takes dedication to do a good job at<lb />
officiating.<lb />
"Tobean effectiveofficial ittakes<lb />
someone with dedication, commit-<lb />
ment, and leadership assertiveness<lb />
Gaskins said. "It takes someone who<lb />
knows the rules and the spirit of them<lb />
and then how to apply them<lb />
Intramural officials are well<lb />
trained in these aspects through the<lb />
many officials meetings and clinics<lb />
before each season. The intramural<lb />
department holds three to fourclasses<lb />
for the officials to train them for effi-<lb />
ciency. They first learn the policies<lb />
and procedures. Then they instruct<lb />
of ficialson the rules and how to inter-<lb />
pret them. After that, officials are<lb />
taught about proper positioning.<lb />
Finally, the prospective officials<lb />
are ready to sport the polyester stripes<lb />
and power-demanding whistle.They<lb />
now get to step onto the court and<lb />
show their stuff in some practice<lb />
games with an experienced guide of-<lb />
ficial. This hands on training gets you<lb />
out on the playing field and teaches<lb />
you the ins and outs of conducting a<lb />
game.<lb />
It is a true art. The zebras of the<lb />
ECU intramural staff are well-trained<lb />
and seem to enjoy their work. Some<lb />
officials like Jeff Watson, have been<lb />
an official for three years now, have<lb />
mastered this art.<lb />
"I've enjoyed being an official<lb />
Watson said. "A lot of it is knowl-<lb />
edge. You are there to keep a fair<lb />
game anil hold the composure of the<lb />
game and it's players. You don't have<lb />
to be a master of rule interpretation.<lb />
Rules are important but you have to<lb />
ma keyour own decision. If it's not by<lb />
the rules, you have to use your best<lb />
judgement<lb />
Remember, if you go to a game<lb />

Most people think that buy-<lb />
ing a,pair of sneakers any more is<lb />
only slightly easier than choosing<lb />
sides in the debate over cold fu-<lb />
sion. And now comes one more<lb />
thing to think about.<lb />
Fakes.<lb />
Few people know it and<lb />
few could tell the difference even<lb />
if they did but there is a wealth<lb />
of counterfeit sporting goods<lb />
floodingworld markets rightnow.<lb />
The companies that make the<lb />
shoes and tennis rackets and golf<lb />
clubs that made this pasL week-<lb />
end of recreation possible (not to<lb />
mention expensive) assure us<lb />
there is no need for panic-yet.<lb />
Because beyond the T-shirt<lb />
vendors who pop up like mush-<lb />
rooms at the sites of many major<lb />
sporting events, very few coun-<lb />
terfeitgoodsappear to have made<lb />
their way onto these shores. And<lb />
the legitimate makers of those<lb />
same goods dropped a nice piece<lb />
of change last week to let the pub-<lb />
lic and the Congress know that<lb />
they intend to keep it that way.<lb />
In its first-ever campaign<lb />
aimed at customers, the Sporting<lb />
Goods Manufacturers Association<lb />
(SGMA) bought a quarter-page<lb />
advertisement in weekend edi-<lb />
tions of USA Todav headlined<lb />
"Knock-offs Are A Rip Off This<lb />
time-honored cry of "Buyer Beware<lb />
cost the association in the neighbor-<lb />
hood of $25,000 peanuts to a trade<lb />
group out to protect an industry<lb />
whose members shipped 531 billion<lb />
worth of product to retailers last year.<lb />
It sounds self-serving, but the es-<lb />
sence of the SGMA's message is that<lb />
you get what you pay for; that if you<lb />
happen on flea market stall where<lb />
those gel-cushioned, air-inflated, en-<lb />
ergy-absorbing sneakers are selling<lb />
at a price that sounds too good to be<lb />
true, it probably is.<lb />
"Consumers over here rarely, if<lb />
ever, come in contact with counter-<lb />
feit footwear said Mary Ann Alford,<lb />
legal counsel for shoe manufacturer<lb />
Reebok, one of the association's 1,800<lb />
member companies.<lb />
It used to be that on walked into<lb />
a store wearing leather street shoes<lb />
and walked out a few minutes later<lb />
in canvas ones with both your feet<lb />
and your wallet only a little bit lighter.<lb />
These days, though, you have to<lb />
wade through phonebook-sized<lb />
pamphlets extolling space-age ma-<lb />
terials and using incomprehensible<lb />
diagrams to explain every one of the<lb />
75 or so technical advances built in to<lb />
the shoes, racket, clubs, etc. Then<lb />
you have to decide whether the en-<lb />
dorser Bo, Michael, Magic, Dave<lb />
or Dan? best fits your image of<lb />
yourself at play.<lb />

Barnes also led the team in trick skiing by<lb />

Leading the team in the jumping division<lb />

Don 'tlookdown! The Climbing Tower offersa recreation alternative to climbing the walls inyour room.<lb />
Climbing to new heights<lb />
And now you're going have to<lb />
rethink all this every time some-<lb />
bodv offers you a bargain?<lb />
In a word, yes. At least if you<lb />
plan to buy any of this stuff from<lb />
anvbody besides a front-line retailer.<lb />
According to the SGMA, some<lb />
of the counterfeit goods look so good<lb />
that they enter legitimate distribu-<lb />
tion channels with ease. The major-<lb />
ity of counterfeiters set up small,<lb />
mobile operations in Korea and tar-<lb />
get only those hard goods shoes,<lb />
shirts, tennis rackets and golf clubs<lb />
that can be knocked off cheaply<lb />
and have some quality-control steps<lb />
that on be cut out at a profit.<lb />
Some pr(xiucts,suchas balls and<lb />
baseball gloves, are made on mar-<lb />
gins too slim to accommodate fakes.<lb />
And other products, such as base-<lb />
ball bats and helmets, are avoided<lb />
because they can involve liability,<lb />
which in turn draws scrutiny and<lb />
ultimately, the authorities.<lb />
Which brings up the second<lb />
part of the campaign. Most mem-<lb />
bers of the SGMA apparently are<lb />
unhappv with the level of coop-<lb />
eration from a number of govern-<lb />
ments in the Far East, particu-<lb />
larly Korea. And in addition to<lb />
advertising, they plan to spend<lb />
money lobbying the U.S. govern-<lb />
ment to make those sentiments<lb />
known to someof it - trading part-<lb />
ners.<lb />

Recreational services now provides a new expe-<lb />

available for the use of students, faculty, staff and<lb />
occasional guests.<lb />
The tower is located in the Allied Health field<lb />
behind the Allied Health Building. It is a two-tiered<lb />
structure with the first level being 20 feet and the<lb />
second level 32 feet in height. The tower has six<lb />
stations for a six-person capacity.<lb />
The Hard Rock Tower is made of solid plywood<lb />
and has foot holds made of natural rock. The tower<lb />
is geared for various rangesof difficulty. Anyone can<lb />
use it, whether a beginner or a seasoned pro. The<lb />
hold settings are changed every now and again for<lb />
the continued enjoyment of the tower's climbers.<lb />
Instructional Workshops are held at the tower<lb />
for perspective users. Climbing I teaches the basic<lb />

When the Atlanta Falcons play at the Geor-<lb />
gia Dome, one of the plush sky boxes will be<lb />
fullof happy-go-lucky guests, compliments of<lb />
happy-go-lucky Falcons star Deion Sanders.<lb />
Officially,Sanderscutapersonalcheckfor<lb />
an estimated $100,000 for the suite. Unoffi-<lb />
cially, it was part of the delicate contract nego-<lb />
tiations that brought Sanders back to the foot-<lb />
ball team last week. The Georgia Dome offi-<lb />
cials had been quietly asked by the club to<lb />
reserve one of the suites for Sanders. He<lb />
received an extra $100,000 from the Falcons<lb />
in his complex package to use on the luxury<lb />
box.<lb />
Is it an outrageous act of generosity by<lb />
the Falcons? Not at all. In many ways, Sand-<lb />
ers was as responsible as anybody for selling<lb />
the Georgia Dome suites.<lb />
Without Sanders, the Falcons cannot play<lb />
the gambling, blitzing defense that has made<lb />
them successful.<lb />
Without Sanders, the Falcons would have a<lb />
reputation, but they wouldn't have a personal-<lb />
ity. Sanders, Vice President of Flayer Personnel<lb />
Ken Herock says, "is the greatest athlete I've<lb />
ever seen<lb />
Wait. What about Bo Jackson?<lb />
"Bo Jackson couldn't play corner Herock<lb />
says. "Deion can play wide receiver; he could<lb />
play tailback. He can do anything<lb />
Sure, it hurts that Sanders may miss Falcons<lb />
games, but considering the alternatives-Sanders<lb />
missing seven or eight games or not playing at all.<lb />
Noway the Falcons are contenders without Deion.<lb />
