As the November election closes in, candidates are<lb />
introducing their policies on higher education. The variety<lb />
of different plans and ideas seem to always be aimed at<lb />
making college more affordable and accessible to middle<lb />
and lower class citizens.<lb />
Two key elections concerning North Carolina college<lb />
students are the North Carolina Governor's race and the<lb />
race for U.S. presidency. The three candidates for president<lb />
have developed higher education plans full of diversity,<lb />
often times including major spending increases. However,<lb />
each plan does promises to broaden the minority and lower<lb />
the economic level student base.<lb />
George Bush (R), the self-proclaimed "Education Presi-<lb />
dent plans to increase funding in existing programs without<lb />
changing the programs or creating new ones. However, the<lb />
president's "America 2000" does not mention how he plans to<lb />
change higher education. The plan does propose an increase in<lb />
the number of undergraduate and graduate students in math,<lb />
natural science and engineering programs. The president also<lb />
plans to increase the number of students, especially minorities,<lb />
who receive degrees from two-year scruxils.<lb />
President Bush's plan seems to be v ague about how<lb />
he hopes to accomplish his givils. Bush's plan carries a<lb />
heavy tax payers' burden of about $H50 million.<lb />
tt k<lb />
Bill Clinton (D) is<lb />
promising a national college<lb />
trust fund that would prac-<lb />
tically guarantee funding<lb />
for any student who needs<lb />
it. According to Governor<lb />
Clinton's plan, a federal loan<lb />
fund would be set up using<lb />
tax payers' money. After<lb />
graduation, students would<lb />
be required to pay back the<lb />
kwiby performing commu-<lb />
nity service or by reimburs-<lb />
ing the fund after finding a<lb /><lb />
Clinton's plan isexpen-<lb />
sive. The set-up costs will<lb />
likely be in the billions of<lb />
dollars. Clinton's biggest<lb />
problem could be raising the<lb />
funds.<lb />
Ross Perot's (I) plan is, at best, nonexist-<lb />
ent. Much like the rest of Perot's stands on is-<lb />
sues, there is nothing to consider as of vet. But in<lb />
his past record he has been very- influential in<lb />
changing education policies in Texas<lb />
During the mid-1930's, Perot led the fight to<lb />
persuade Texas football fans to adopt a "no pass,<lb />
no play" rule for high school athletes. He also<lb />
backed Governor Mark White's policv of compe-<lb />
tency testing for high school teachers. Perot also<lb />
campaigned to pass a bill giving the governor<lb />
control in appointing the state's school board<lb />
members.<lb /><lb />
The race for North Carolina's governor<lb />
Jim Hunt's (D) education record as governor from 1976 until 1984 was a strong one. His education plans do call for increased spending. In 1977, Hunt proposed a plan calling for a 65 percent increase in salary for university employees. Over 1980-81, the Governor budgeted $18.4 million for remedial programs at the elementary and high school levels. Hunt would like North Carolina's education statistics to speak for him. At the end of the Hunt Era, North Carolina ranked first in the nation in spending on higher education in relation to the percentage of total spending. Hunt spent 42.8 percent on state and kxral government spending toward education. Hunt also left North Carolina 10th in the nation in devotion to public schools. The race for North Carolina governor will play a more important role in the education of ECU students. Former Governor Jim Hunt is attempting to stand on his education record from his past two terms as governor. Lieutenant Governor Jim Gardner plans for drastic changes on some issues, which should cut state spending in areas.Jim Gardner (R) plans to cut waste spending in order to increase spending in education programs. Higher teacher pay, teacher tenure and smaller classroom sizes will all be paid for through "cutting the bureaucracy in Raleigh" Gardner's budget reform bill will ensure that the general assembly does not overestimate spending and be forced to make up for it with tax increases. Gardner would tike to see the N.C superintendent appointed by the state board of education. He also plans to allow parents more influence in their children's education. Under Gardner's plans, parents would choose where their children will attend school as well as what their busing situation would be. Profiles by Tony Rogers The East Carolinian<lb /><lb />
Alcohol cited as students' drug of choice<lb />
By Marjorie Pitts<lb />
Staff Writf<lb />
Drinking is the number one health<lb />
problem on college and university cam-<lb />
puses.<lb />
According to the Officeof Substance<lb />
Abuse Prevention (OSAP), between<lb />
240,000 and MQ,000 students will even-<lb />
tually lose their lives to drinking.<lb />
President Bush included alcohol in<lb />
the 1992 National Drug Control Strat-<lb />
egy, citing it as "the most abused sub-<lb />
stance by students<lb />
College students spend about $55<lb />
billion annually to purchase alcoholic<lb />
beverages, and alcohol consumption can<lb />
lead to dropouts, campus violence, risky<lb />
sexual encounters and death. Over half<lb />
of violent crimes are committed by per-<lb />
tons who have been drinking preceding<lb />
the crime.<lb />
According to a 1987 study, 285,000<lb />
serious crimes were committed on<lb />
America's campuses. In addition, there<lb />
were tens of thousands of incidents of<lb />
fighting rapes, vandalism and other acts<lb />
of violence that were never reported or<lb />
treated as crimes. A large proportion of<lb />
these were alcohol-related.<lb />
"Alcohol is our school's drug of<lb />
choice, and the number one addiction<lb />
substance said Dean of Students Dr.<lb />
Ronald Speier "We are not any different<lb />
from other colleges<lb />
Last year at ECU, four date rapes<lb />
involving alcohol were reported.<lb />
" Alcohol usually is involved in date<lb />
rape' said Lt. Keith Knox of ECU Public<lb />
Safety. "Date rape is usually set up<lb />
through alcohol<lb />
Last year at ECU, there were 35 li-<lb />
quor law violations, 43 disorderly con-<lb />
duct violations and 48 DWI's given on<lb />
campus.<lb />
"The majority of vandalism and dis-<lb />
orderly conduct violations involve alco-<lb />
hol Knox said. "Alcohol is the number<lb />
one contributor to all problems<lb />
Last year Greenville Police issued<lb />
104 DWI citations for people ages 18-24.<lb />
As of June 1992, Greenville Police have<lb />
arrested 22 people ages 18-24 for DWI<lb />
citations.<lb />
A majority of the tickets written for<lb />
students are underage drinking viola-<lb />
tions. A first-time offender of underage<lb />
drinking will receive a warning. A sec-<lb />
ond-time offender must visit a resident<lb />
hall counselor to see if he or she has an<lb />
alcohol problem. The third time a student<lb />
receives a warning, they are given a $25<lb />
ticket and must go to an alcohol abuse<lb />
class given on campus.<lb />
Some specific incidents of campus<lb />
alcohol abuse were cited in the OSAP<lb />
report<lb />
The father of an intoxicated 20-year-<lb />
old killed in a fall from a window of the<lb />
Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Clemson<lb />

the shooting deaths of two friends. Af-<lb />
ter travelling to a gravel pit to drink<lb />
beer, the youth shot his friends point<lb />
blank and then torched the car they had<lb />
ridden in.<lb />
Charges of rape against a Univer-<lb />

fied that she was too drunk to know she<lb />
was being sexually assaulted and the<lb />

that he did not realize at first that she<lb />
was not consenting.<lb />
A 1991 survey of high school se-<lb />
niorsandcollegestudents by Michigan's<lb />
Institute for Survey Research indicated<lb />
an increase in the number of "binge<lb />
drinkers (five or more drinks in a row)<lb />
and daily drinkers in the college-age<lb />
population.<lb />
One college study found that 15<lb />
percent of its undergraduates suffer<lb />
from alcohol-related injuries per year<lb />
and 29 percent had engaged in<lb />
"unplanned" sexual activity afterdrink-<lb />
ing.<lb />
Alcohol awareness programs are<lb />

Undergraduate students at<lb />

Himmelfarb, with Roper College<lb />

to Time magazine, higher educa-<lb />

Traditionally, in a gixvl eco-<lb />

at students as people with income<lb />
potential when they graduated and<lb />
began to work, said Paul Tedeschi,<lb />
president of Collegiate Marketing,<lb />
a Boston-based college marketing<lb />
firm. Howerver, in a bad economy,<lb />
corporations market heavily to stu-<lb />
dents for immediate sales.<lb />
Big corporations already have<lb />
,i strong presence on campuses in<lb />
uch venues as research money. In<lb />
a new twist to raising money for<lb />
needed campus projects, Pepsi and<lb />
Penn State recently- signed a $14-<lb />
millionagmment to exclusively sell<lb />
Tepsi products Tnretum, the school<lb />
received revenue for buildings and<lb />
programs.<lb />
But many corporations are fo-<lb />
cusing on the students.<lb />
Consider Barnes & Noble Book-<lb />

250campus books tores nationwide,<lb />
including stores at Columbia Uni-<lb />
versity, Northwestern University,<lb />
Texas A&M and University of Ne-<lb />
vada-Las Vegas. Its presence may<lb />
not be known by most student or<lb />
academicians, but the company is<lb />
the largest campus bookstore op-<lb />
erator in the United States, in terms<lb />
of sales. Another large operator is<lb />
Follett, which is based in Chicago,<lb />
"ltbringsa sense of profession-<lb />
alism to bookstores, "Tedeschi said.<lb />
"And it guarantees revenue to the<lb />
college<lb />
It is estimated that campus<lb />
bookstores are a $6.5 billion indus-<lb />
try, and it is one that is growing<lb />
every year, said Steve Johnson, an<lb />
official with the National Associa-<lb />
tion of College Bookstores in<lb />
Oberlin, Ohio. More institutions are<lb />
contracting with institutions to<lb />
manage campus bookstores, he said.<lb />
'There is a trend toward a grow-<lb />
ing number of contract-managed<lb />
stores Johnson said. "Their pro-<lb />
posals can certainly be attractive<lb />
when they contact a school's ad-<lb />
ministration<lb />
Most companies agree to give a<lb />

Barnes & Noble, in conjunc-<lb />

travels to campuses for two-day<lb />
stints. The Campus America tour<lb />
has scheduled to go to 25 campuses<lb />
this fall,Tedeschi said,and will pro-<lb />

Barnes & Noble, Reebok, Citibank,<lb />
American Express and Marvel<lb />

The firms have giveaways and<lb />

walk away with something; the<lb />
companies get exposure not only<lb />
for immediate sales, but for name<lb />
recognition and sales when the stu-<lb />
dents enter the work force after<lb />

Eric Weil, editor of Collegiate<lb />

about $150 million last year to reach<lb />
college students, which he said is<lb />
not a lot of money, considering the<lb />

He said there are about 50 gen-<lb />

Have patience with new freshmen<lb />
The three of them stand in the sh.idr of the<lb />
tree? in front of lovner Library. To ignore them<lb />
is impossible<lb />
Mom, D.td, and lohnny Freshman<lb />
Once again, droves of bewildered Incom-<lb />
ing freshmen have raided the ECU campus.<lb />
Thev carry with them the weight of unfamiliar<lb />
procedures, places and people. Orientation is<lb />
their goal and taking test after test and Standing<lb />
in line after line is their medium<lb />
But, to the untrained eye, some mav find it<lb />
hard to distinguish between these incoming<lb />
students and the rest of our fellow collegians<lb />
Here are three simple rules-of-thumb for spot<lb />
tmg orientation neophytes:<lb />
1) Watch for women carrying pocketbooks<lb />
The seasoned student knows there is no use for<lb />
&mm otwics, 1992. &wtion<lb />
a pocketbook on campus Back packs do the job<lb />
2) Look for any youngster followed closely<lb />
hv Mom and Dad. ECU professionals learn<lb />
quickly that it is not cool to hang out with<lb />
parents.<lb />
3) Check for the multiple-ECU-<lb />
paraphenalia-svndrome Any individual wear-<lb />
ing three or more ECU garments are sure to be<lb />
rookies of campus life.<lb />
Sure, they are all easy to spot, and at times<lb />
we may become annoyed by the continual ques-<lb />
tion: "How do I get to Spilman?" But, these<lb />
SOOn-tO-be freshman, will transcend into the<lb />
sparkling future of the school.<lb />
So, give them all some respect, try to keep<lb />
vour patience about vou,and remember that we<lb />
have all been there before<lb />
As we all know, blacks sometimes<lb />
say things that many other Americans<lb />
ckin't like Gmsequaitly, I propose that<lb />
the folkiwmg rvstncUons be placed on<lb />
blacks' speech<lb />
First if a black person wishes tnsw<lb />
anything publicly, a police officer should<lb />
inform him of thepnbableansecruences<lb />
at his statement by reading a set speech<lb />
prepared by the state legislature The po-<lb />
lice officer shoukl then suggest alterna-<lb />
tive, less offensive statements<lb />
Second: having been informed of<lb />
the probable consequences of his speech,<lb />
the black penon in quarttal should then<lb />
have to wait one hill day before making<lb />
his statement This is merely a axling-off<lb />
period, so we can tie sure the Mac k per m<lb />
wiTi't say anything rash<lb />
Third the proper authorities<lb />
should keep detailed records of every-<lb />
thing the Mack person siys records<lb />
which may of course be rvleasd to the<lb />
public at any lime<lb />
iNk te that none of these restrictxTis<lb />
prevents any black person from saying<lb />
anything he wants to say They're just<lb />
desigiied to nyulate sjuwh, not to pre-<lb />
vent it Whiff m re, such regulate MM<lb />
1 Iwirlv naCMMfV, MiKebLxksotten make<lb />
iH-ttwxsidered comments which they later<lb />
regret<lb />
Now, for the benefit of the irony<lb />
impaired: the preceding us irony No<lb />
(Tie especially not I would ever<lb />
propose such restrictions with a straight<lb />
face, in part becauseour country properly<lb />
does not alkrw the populace to vote to<lb />
restrict the constitutionally protected<lb />
nghtsofasegmentofthepopulatKm Not<lb />
unless they want tr amend the Omstiru-<lb />
rjon,anyway,suchrsrnctionswouJd cer-<lb />
tainly never be permitted if imposed at<lb />
any lower level.<lb />
But the Supreme Court has rust<lb />
heJd that al most exactly those restrictions<lb />
may be placed on another nght it deems<lb />
fundamental the nght to have an abor-<lb />
tion<lb />
It's a ludicrous decision One can-<lb />
not simultaneously maintain that abor-<lb />
tion is a nght and that the nght is subject<lb />
to such extensive regulation by the states<lb />
Not unless other nghts are in for the same<lb />
degree of "regulation" in which case<lb />
I'm leaving the country<lb />
Another deeply troubling aspect<lb />
of the court's ruling is its relocatxri of the<lb />
burden of pnxf Typically, in order to<lb />
interfere with a fundamental nght, the<lb />
KiTvemment must prove that it has an<lb />
overriding reastTi to restrict the nght For<lb />
instance, if I state wishes to limit free<lb />
speech, it must prove that the benefits of<lb />
the restriction tar outweigh the costs<lb />
The new "undue burden" stan-<lb />
dard rums that around, at least when it<lb />
aunestoabortnin Theatienvvhtsentfits<lb />
aretrampledcinhaskipn'vethattheaBts<lb />
of the restriction outweigh the benefits<lb />
It's as if the government amid<lb />
specify that votmgtx ths w m id be open<lb />
cnly from Sam ki H-05 am in voting<lb />
day, and you had to prove m court that<lb />
you couldn't ma lie it at that time<lb />
Further, thepatemalis.nexpesfied<lb />

the majonty, Ju.sticesO'G mnor, Kennedy<lb />
and Souter wrote, m part, "Though the<lb />

or antrnue her pregnancy before viabil-<lb />
ity, it does not at all folk rw thai the state is<lb />
prohibited from taking steps to ensure<lb />
that this choice is thoughtful and in-<lb />

In other wcrds, you may have <lb />
nght to ha ve an abortion, but the sta te ha s<lb />
a nght to keep you from having it while<lb />
they tell you what a bad decision you're<lb />
making That's the essence of (Tie of the<lb />
restrictions upheld by the court, and it's<lb />
perfectly insulting<lb />
People sometimes buy airs they<lb />
shouldn't buy They place bets they<lb />
shouldn't place They say things they<lb />

Media has become fourth branch<lb />
By J.William<lb />
Walker<lb />
Editorial Columnist<lb />
Good evening and welcome to<lb />
NCC news The president today used<lb />
three band-aids when hecut his hand<lb />
on a razor blade In Iraq today the<lb />
sheik Mohammed Al-Akbad du<lb />
Franahama sued People magazine<lb />
over allegations of slander against his<lb />
pet elephant In Oklahoma today, Fred<lb />
and Ethyl Srevensteve broke the world<lb />
record in marathon horseshoe pitch-<lb />
ing with 212 hours of straight pitch-<lb />
ing When asked about her marvelous<lb />
pitching phenomenon. Ethyl said "I'm<lb />
tired " And that's the news for this<lb />
Wednesday Stay tuned for more NCC<lb />
news at Eleven<lb />
The media is the fourth branch<lb />
of the government They feed the<lb />
masses with information on some of<lb />
the most useless topics The 'V2 presi-<lb />
dential campaign has been cluttered<lb />
with some prime examples Bill<lb />
Clinton, for instance, was asked nu-<lb />
menmsquestionsconcerning possible<lb />
(but not probable) adultery, draft<lb />
dodging, and marijuana smoking<lb />
(withoutinhaling) Noneoftheseques-<lb />
tions have anything to do with his<lb />
effectiveness as a leader<lb />
The scary thing is that portions<lb />
of the American public would rather<lb />
hea r about these worthless topics than<lb />
they would about Clinton's plans or<lb />
ideas ToloeQ Public,scamsofadul-<lb />
tery and drugs are much more entic-<lb />
ing. Mr Public can't even understand<lb />
some of the concepts on which the real<lb />
issues are based<lb />
Obviously, the media agrees<lb />
with me because they've noticed this<lb />
weak side of Americana, and have<lb />
capitalized on it The news today is<lb />
similar to daytime drama Every once<lb />
in a while a new character like Perot's<lb />
inability as a leaderor LA riots comes<lb />
onto the show, and people eat it up,<lb />
for a while. Then, that character gets<lb />
boring to Mr. Public, and the media<lb />
stops covenng it<lb />
The media gives us what sells<lb />
Stones of divorce and drugs are more<lb />
entertaining and better suited for tele-<lb />
vision than are stories of referendums<lb />
and House legislation. The problem<lb />
with the people is we allow them to<lb />
get away with it Nobody seems ready<lb />
to demand an answer to the questions<lb />
that really matter People are more<lb />
concerned with the Bush's dinner<lb />
menu for the fourth of July than they<lb />
are about who is being held account-<lb />
able for writing bad checks and what<lb />
legal action is not being taken.<lb />
With all of this muckraking<lb />
comesonlyone thing-more muckrak-<lb />
ing. The media has the American pub-<lb />
lic believing that ridiculous stories<lb />
concerning adultery and drug use are<lb />
more important man the real issues.<lb />
Not since this campaign began have<lb />
we een any deba te on the issues much<lb />
less any real talk about what the issues<lb />
signify<lb />
We now know all about the skel-<lb />
etons in Bill Clinton and Ross Perot's<lb />
closets, but we don't know what ei-<lb />
ther of them plan to do about the<lb />
deficit<lb />
And mat's the way JoeQ. Public<lb />
likes it He doesn't want stale charac-<lb />
ters on his six 'o clock soap opera, he<lb />
wants the latest, trashiest, tasteless,<lb />
prying, supermarket ragweed tabloid<lb />
info on the contents of George Bush's<lb />
garbage<lb />
Think of the impact of this prob-<lb />
lem We could conceivably elect a<lb />
president this November that has not<lb />
even addressed the issues confront-<lb />
ing America. As long as he is "elect-<lb />
able" and has a clean record, he's eli-<lb />
gible.<lb />
The simple fact is whether or<lb />
not Joe Politician smoked pot, screwed<lb />
his neighbor or spat on his mother<lb />
doesn't tell us anything about Mr.<lb />
Politician'sabilityasa leader. The heart<lb />
of the issues is being grossly ignored.<lb />
What about ol' King George?<lb />
There's no muckraking going on at<lb />
the oval office. Somehow, I have a<lb />
feeling that the Texas oil man has a<lb />
few dusty incidents from the past that<lb />
are being most graciously looked over.<lb />
But, that just goes to show that truly<lb />
the media is the fourth branch of the<lb />
government.<lb />
A few years ago syndicated id<lb />
umnist Lewis Cnzard. of whom lam<lb />
a loyal fan, underwent delicate sur-<lb />
gery to replace a heart valve that had<lb />
gonesour Cnardcamethrough the<lb />
operation awith flying colors and was<lb />
soon at his manual typewnter again,<lb />
banging out distilled bits of wisdom<lb />
and wit<lb />
Not onceduring this wholepro-<lb />
cedurv did I see any news hxtage of<lb />
animal rights activists protesting<lb />
CriZZafti'l operation, despite the fact<lb />
that his replacement heart valve came<lb />
from a pig<lb />
Now, fast forward to just last<lb />
week, to the University of Pittsburgh,<lb />
where a 3? year old man, (whom we'll<lb />
call John), dying from liver failure,<lb />
bravely agreed to be the first recipient<lb />
of a transplanted baboon liver<lb />
Remember Grizzard and his<lb />
pig? No protesters there But, you go<lb />
messing with a baboon, and brother<lb />
you've got tmuble!<lb />
Less than 4 hours after John's<lb />
operation, a legion of sign-carrying<lb />
zealots hit the sidewalk outside the<lb />
hospital where fie lay struggling tor<lb />
his life They picketed and shouted<lb />
and proclaimed that animals were not<lb />
to be used for spare parts for humans<lb />
Animals have rights, they said, and<lb />
are not here for us to abuse<lb />
Watching this vulgar display of<lb />
localized ignorance, (and seriously re-<lb />
considering the value of the first<lb />
amendment to the Constitution), I re-<lb />
alized that the only animal this group<lb />
didn't care about was Homo Sarirrt<lb />
The extreme insensitivity of the<lb />
protest was appalling To stage the<lb />
demonstration ust outside John's hos-<lb />
pital must have taken a remarkable<lb />
amount of callousness, not to mention<lb />
an equally remarkable lack of intel-<lb />
lect<lb />
1 can sympathize , at least on a<lb />
limited level, with John Last night ,1<lb />
was invaded with a nasty little virus<lb />
As I sit writing this column, I have a<lb />
fever of over 101 degrees 1 am expen-<lb />
encmg stomach cramps that must be<lb />
close to duplicating labor pains, and I<lb />
have 10 make a conscious effort not to<lb />
show everybody what 1 ate for break-<lb />
fast this morning And this is most<lb />
assuredly only a small fraction of the<lb />
pain and the complications a person<lb />
dying of liver failure goes though I<lb />
say bring m the baboon<lb />
Animals have no rights save<lb />
those we humans grant them We de-<lb />
cide what is ethical or not m our scien-<lb />
tific and medical dealings with other<lb />
creatures In so doing we have to be<lb />
careful that we don't confuse a dog or<lb />
a cat or a baboon with a human being<lb />
Our use of animals is dictated<lb />
by human need, always has been, al-<lb />
ways will be The same people who<lb />
protest the use of animal organs to<lb />
save human lives no doubt share the<lb />
same mentality of those who vandal-<lb />
ize fur coats, and who eschew eating<lb />
meat<lb />
While reducing the intake of<lb />
certain fatty meats does make good<lb />
health sense, ruling out meat alto-<lb />
gether ignores the fad that humans<lb />
are omnivorous, feeding on both ani-<lb />
mal and vegetable substances If you<lb />
s.iv it is wrong for humans to eat meat<lb />
you must flay the same for lions, bears,<lb />
eagles, and myriad .ther omnivores<lb />
and carnivores on the planet<lb />
As for the use of animal furs<lb />
and hides as clothing, a quick glance<lb />
at the history of man will reveal that<lb />
we have been doing this for thou-<lb />
sands of years<lb />
American Indians were mas-<lb />
ters of utilizing almost every part of<lb />
the animals they hunted, including<lb />
thehides, meat, and bones, yet 1 doubt<lb />
anyone would criticize them for this<lb />
practice<lb />
I agree that there are some in-<lb />
stances of animal use that border on<lb />
senseless abuse Testing a perfume's<lb />
reactivity by spraying it directly in to a<lb />
rabbit's eyes is an action nx'ted in<lb />
vanity, and as such, stretches most<lb />
ethical boundanes<lb />
On the balance, however, the<lb />
large maiority of experimentation<lb />
with, and medical uses of, animals is<lb />
highly beneficial to the human race<lb />
Getting back to the protesters,<lb />
and those m this column's readership<lb />
who share their philosophy, they may<lb />
see a happy end to their activist ef-<lb />
forts For it seems that other baboon<lb />
organs have been transplanted to hu-<lb />

Letters To The Editor<lb />
Is it too much<lb />
to ask?<lb />
To the Editor:<lb />
There is no question Pitt<lb />
County needs an ordinance to<lb />
regulate and control the devel-<lb />
opment and operation of shoot-<lb />
ing ranges At present, a shoot-<lb />
ing range may be located any-<lb />
where in Pitt County, next to a<lb />
school, a day care facility, or a<lb />
neighborhood. Our county is<lb />
growing and becoming more<lb />
densely populated As well, the<lb />
number of shooting ranges is<lb />
growing.<lb />
Given the hazards associ-<lb />
ated with .shooting ranges, we<lb />
can not allow them to be devel-<lb />
oped and operated without any<lb />
supervision. We as a county must<lb />
ensure they are developed and<lb />
operated safely, without being a<lb />
nuisance, environmentally re-<lb />
sponsible, and with consider-<lb />
ation for surrounding property<lb />
owners. Otherwise we are<lb />
doomed to repeat the mistakes<lb />
of other North Carolina counties.<lb />
We do not need a death lite<lb />
' i<lb />
Michele Sexton in Carrowinds or<lb />
a hazardous waste site like ths<lb />
Sir Walter Gun Club.<lb />
Every United States citizen<lb />
has the right to own and shoot a<lb />
firearm. But with that right<lb />
comes a responsibility to ensure<lb />
other's rights are not infringed<lb />
upon. Is it too much to ask Pitt<lb />
County shooting ranges to fol-<lb />
low nationally recognized safety<lb />
standards? Is it too much to ask<lb />
that these ranges be located in<lb />
less densely populated areas<lb />
away from neighborhoods? And<lb />
is it too much to require safety<lb />
zones, fencing and signs o iden-<lb />
tify the ranges?<lb />
Pitt County is in the final<lb />
stages of enacting a shooting<lb />
range ordinance to protect Pitt<lb />
County citizens while allowing<lb />
safe responsible shooting. But<lb />
there is one enhancement needed<lb />
in the proposed ordinance. To be<lb />
fair, this ordinance should require ex-<lb />
isting ranges to meet the same mini-<lb />
mum standards as a new range. We<lb />
hope the county will take quick action<lb />
to enact this ordinance.<lb />

A View From Above<lb />
Once again, droves ol bewildered incom-<lb />

Thev carry with them the weight ot unfamiliar<lb />
procedures, places and people Orientation is<lb />
their goal and Liking test after test ami standing<lb />

But, to the untrained eve. some may find it<lb />
hard to distinguish between these incoming<lb />

Here are three simple rules-of-thumb tor spot-<lb />

1) Watch for women carrying pocketbooks<lb />

news at Eleven<lb />
The media is the fourth branch<lb />
of thr government They feed the<lb />
masses with information on some of<lb />
the most useless topics The '2 presi-<lb />
dential campaign has been cluttered<lb />
with some prime examples Bill<lb />
Clinton, for instance, was asked nu-<lb />
merousquestjonsconcerning possible<lb />
(but not probable) adultery, draft<lb />
dodging, and marijuana smoking<lb />
(withoutinhaling) Noneoftheseques-<lb />
tions have anything to do with his<lb />
effectiveness as a leader<lb />
The scary thing is that portions<lb />
Mil<lb />
of the American public would rather<lb />
hear about these worthless topics than<lb />
thev would about Clinton's plans or<lb />
ideas To Joe Q Public, scams of adul-<lb />
tery and drugs are much more entic-<lb />
ing Mr Public can't even understand<lb />
someoftheconceptsonwhichthere.il<lb />
issues are based<lb />
Obviously, the media agrees<lb />
with me because they've noticed trtis<lb />
weak side of Americana, and have<lb />
capitalized on it. The news today is<lb />
similar to daytime drama tvery once<lb />
m a while a new character like Perot's<lb />
inability as a leader or LA riots comes<lb />
onto the show, and people eat it up,<lb />
for a while. Then, that character gets<lb />
boring to Mr Public, and the media<lb />
stops covenng it<lb />
The media gives us what sells<lb />
Stones of divorce and drugs are more<lb />
entertaining and better suited for tele-<lb />
vision than are stories of referendums<lb />
and House legislation The problem<lb />
with the people is we allow them to<lb />
get away with it .Nobody seems ready<lb />
to demand an answer to the questions<lb />
that really matter People are more<lb />
concerned with the Bush's dinner<lb />
menu for the fourth of July than they<lb />
are about who is being held account-<lb />
able for wnting bad checks and what<lb />
legal action is not being taken<lb />
With all of this muckraking<lb />
comes only one thing-more muckrak-<lb />
ing The media has the American pub-<lb />
lic believing that ridiculous stories<lb />
concerning adultery and drug use are<lb />
more important than the real issues.<lb />
Not since this campaign began have<lb />
we seen any debateon the issues much<lb />
less anv real talk about what the issues<lb />
signify<lb />
Wenow know all about die skel-<lb />
etons in Bill Clinton and Koss Perot's<lb />
closets, but we don't know what ei-<lb />
ther of them plan to do about the<lb />
deficit<lb />
And tnat's the way JoeQ Public<lb />
likes it He doesn't want stale charac-<lb />
ters on his six 'o clock soap opera, he<lb />
wants the latest, trashiest, tasteless,<lb />
prying, supermarket ragweed tabloid<lb />
info on the contents of George Bush's<lb />
garbage<lb />
Thinkof the impact of this prob-<lb />
lem We could conceivably elect a<lb />
president this November that has not<lb />
even addressed the issues confront-<lb />
ing America. As long as he is "elect-<lb />
able" and has a clean record, he's eli-<lb />
gible<lb />
The simple fact is whether or<lb />
not Joe Politician smoked pot, screwed<lb />
his neighbor or spat on his mother<lb />
doesn't fell us anything about Mr<lb />
Politician's ability as a leader. The heart<lb />
of the issues is being gnissly ignored.<lb />
What about ol' King George?<lb />
There's no muckraking going on at<lb />
the oval office. Somehow, I have a<lb />
feeling that the Texas oil man has a<lb />
few dusty incidents from the past that<lb />
are being most graciously looked over<lb />
But, that just goes to show that truly<lb />
the media is the fourth branch of the<lb />
government<lb />
A tew years ago syndicated i ol<lb />
ummst Lewis Grizzard, of whom lent<lb />
a loyal fan, underwent delicate sur-<lb />

soon at his manual typewnter again,<lb />
banging out distilled bits ot wisdom<lb />

Not once during this wholepro-<lb />
cedurv did 1 see any news footage of<lb />
animal rights activists protesting<lb />
Grizzard's operation, despite the fact<lb />
that his replacement heart valve came<lb />
from a pig<lb />
Now, fast forward to just last<lb />

will John), dying from liver failure,<lb />
bravely agreed to be the first recipient<lb />

Remember Crizard and his<lb />

his life They picketed and shouted<lb />
and proclaimed that animals were not<lb />
to be used for spare parts for humans<lb />
Animals have rights, they said, and<lb />

Watching this vulgar display of<lb />

Letters To The Editor<lb />
Is it too much<lb />
to ask?<lb />
To the Editor:<lb />
There is no question Pitt<lb />
County needs an ordinance to<lb />
regulate and control the devel-<lb />
opment and operation of shoot-<lb />
ing ranges At present, a shoot-<lb />
ing range may be located any-<lb />
where in Pitt County, next to a<lb />
school, a day care facility, or a<lb />
neighborhood. Our county is<lb />
growing and becoming more<lb />
densely populated As well, the<lb />
number of shooting ranges is<lb />
growing.<lb />
Given the hazards associ-<lb />
ated with shooting ranges, we<lb />
can not allw them to be devel-<lb />
oped and operated without any<lb />
supervision. We as a county must<lb />
ensure they are developed and<lb />
operated safely, without being a<lb />
nuisance, environmentally re-<lb />
sponsible, and with consider-<lb />
ation for surrounding property<lb />
owners Otherwise we are<lb />
doomed to repeat the mistakes<lb />
of other North Carolina counties.<lb />
We do not need a death like<lb />
Michele Sexton in Carrowmds or<lb />
a hazardous waste site like the<lb />
Sir Walter Gun Club<lb />
Every United States citizen<lb />
has the right to own and shoot a<lb />
firearm. But with that right<lb />
comes a responsibility to ensure<lb />
other's rights are not infringed<lb />
upon. Is it too much to ask Pitt<lb />
County shooting ranges to fol-<lb />
low nationally recognized safety<lb />
standards? Is it too much to ask<lb />
that these ranges be located in<lb />
less densely populated areas<lb />
away from neighborhoods? And<lb />
is it too much to require safety<lb />
zones, fencing and signs to iden-<lb />
tify the ranges?<lb />
Pitt County is in the final<lb />
stages of enacting a shooting<lb />
range ordinance to protect Pitt<lb />
County citizens while allowing<lb />
safe responsible shooting. But<lb />
there is one enhancement needed<lb />
in the proposed ordinance Tobe<lb />
fair, this ordinance should require ex-<lb />
isting ranges to meet the same mini-<lb />
mum standards as a new range We<lb />
hope the county will take quick action<lb />
to enact this ordinance<lb />

One pitiful script<lb />
Thus describes ft?frrwn Returns.<lb />
Batman stormed into theaters<lb />
in the summer of 198 as one of the<lb />
most hyped films of all time. People<lb />
went to see Battmn not because of<lb />
positive word of mouth (although<lb />
that probably helped) but because<lb />
Warner Brothers convinced the<lb />
public that Batmivi was a major<lb />
event. Major advertisers bought into<lb />
the action. Batman was a media cre-<lb />
ated sensation.<lb />
Btitirum Returns hopes to create<lb />

The first of these is the first<lb />
single, "What Qris Want Aside<lb />
from beinga little sexist, this is a fun<lb />

the crap and deserves classic single<lb />
status. How could anyone resist a<lb />
chorus like this: "I want a man with<lb />
lips just like Mick Jagger Rod<lb />
Stewart's hair and Keith Richards'<lb />
stagger1"<lb />
The other very gixxl track on<lb />
Destination Universe is "Ballad of a<lb />
Lonelv Man Hard, fast and even<lb />
grungv, this one starts out as what<lb />
seems to be the story of a broken-<lb />
hearted man, as told to his bar-<lb />
tender. This somewhat predictable<lb />
pattern takes a sudden gut-rwisting<lb />
left turn, however, as the lonely<lb />
man opens his jacket to reveal the<lb />
gun he used to kill his cheatiri<lb />
woman. "You got a tale to tell the<lb />
man savs to the bartender. "Make<lb />
sure it's a headline Tell em that<lb />

bum is "Next Big Thing which,<lb />
truth be told, is onlv rrnxieratelv<lb />
gixxi.Musicalqualitvdoesn't stand<lb />
out from the crowd on this one, but<lb />
the lyrics do rise, however slightly,<lb />
above the mass of mediocrity. It's<lb />
about meeting an artsy girl in a bar<lb />
and 1 istening to her make fun of the<lb />
other patrons until she gets up and<lb />
leaves. Onlv an almost-love-song,<lb />
"Next Big Thing" mainly seems<lb />
gixxi because it's not riddled with<lb />
thecliches the more traditional love<lb />
songs here spout like geysers.<lb />
Consider, for instance, this sear-<lb />
ing lyric from "Everything "And 1<lb />
would give everything that I own<lb />
I'd give vou my heart and this skin<lb />
and theseN mes ITie sun. the moon,<lb />
the earth, the skv The motorcy cle<lb />
that 1 like to ride ' Note that not<lb />
onlv does this np off a couple oi<lb />
Motown tunes, but the final lines<lb />
don't even rhyme!<lb />
Or how about some deathless<lb />
poetry from "Whole Lotta Vou1"<lb />
"Don't cry or end it all cause I'll be<lb />
here for vou Sav goodbye to the<lb />
other one cause thev're nothing if<lb />
they're new Irten there's "Don't<lb />
You Think I Know "Hello starry<lb />
eves, it's just me And check out <lb />
well, never mind Finding bad lines<lb />
on this album is just tio easy.<lb />
In general, the lyrics that aren't<lb />
cliches are blatantly lifted from<lb />
other, better songs or else make no<lb />
sense whatsoever.<lb />
Occasionally an inventive line<lb />
or guitar lick sneaks in, but tor the<lb />
most part Material Issue follows the<lb />
mediocrity party line. I he most in-<lb />
furiating thing about it, more infu-<lb />
riating than the mediocrity itself, is<lb />
the band's attitude toward its stvle.<lb />
Lead singerguitarist lim<lb />
Ellison has been quoted as saving,<lb />
"l think it takes a lot more balls to<lb />
write songs with girl's names than<lb />
to am screwdrivers in the bridge ot<lb />
vourgmtar Tocopahipper-than-<lb />
thou attitude over such a diligent<lb />
pursuit of the mundane puts Mate-<lb />
rial Issue even lower on the focxl-<lb />
chainthan Destination Unxversedid.<lb />
And besides, at least screwdriv-<lb />
ers would be interesting.<lb />
repi irters for the past month that he<lb />
approached Batman Returns as an<lb />
onginal film versus a sequel. In<lb />
keeping with this idea, he created<lb />
completely new sets, radically dif-<lb />
ferent villains and even set the film<lb />
in winter to alter the time of year<lb />
from Batman. Yet the fact simply is<lb />
that Batman Returns is a sequel.<lb />
The tone has already been set<lb />
bv the previous film. The audience<lb />
knows to expect odd villains, a<lb />
mysterious hero and a dark atmo-<lb />
sphere. Warner Brothers knows this<lb />
is a sequel Thev greedily await the<lb />
dollars that are already coming in<lb />
because of the advertising dollars<lb />
thev have already corralled.<lb />
Biitman Returns succeeds only<lb />
in creating manv commercial ready<lb />
images. There are three, yes three<lb />
ma jor villains. Pen guin.Carwoman<lb />
and Max Shreak. The script spends<lb />
so much time making sure each<lb />
viMain gets enough screen time that<lb />
it forgets to tell a story.<lb />
Danny Devito's Penguin<lb />
waddles fnghteningly through his<lb />
wanes. With flippers for hands, a<lb />
beak-like nose and a penchant for<lb />
eating raw fish he looks every bit<lb />
like the animal from which he de-<lb />
nves his name. His parents threw<lb />
him in the sewer when he was a<lb />
babv because of his oddities like<lb />
eating the house cat.<lb />
The Tenguin's appetite for raw<lb />
fish is matched bv his lascivious<lb />

Gtv to retaliate for his miserable<lb />

Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman<lb />
also plots revenge. Herrevengecen-<lb />
ters around Max Shreak (Christo-<lb />
pher Walken). Selina Kyle,<lb />
Carwoman's real name, worked for<lb />
Shreak. When she opened Mime<lb />
protected files Shreak becomes irate<lb />
and tossed Selina out the window.<lb />
Upon being revived by cats, Selina<lb />
becomes Catwoman.<lb />
Toovercompensate forSelina's<lb />
meekness, Catwoman dresses<lb />
kinkily in a btxly tight black suit<lb />
and brandishesa whip. When Selina<lb />
smashes all her "nice" possessions,<lb />
she is destroying her old self.<lb />
The third important villain,<lb />
who gets nearly the screen time that<lb />
Penguin and Catwoman do, is Max<lb />
Shreak. He plans to build a power<lb />
plantthatwillcaptu re energy which<lb />
can then be sold back to the city at<lb />
an enormous profit. Unlike the other<lb />
two villains, Shreak's mask is not<lb />
visible. Shreak's mask is his philan-<lb />
thropy. He pretends to help the city<lb />
financially so that he can fulfill his<lb />
master plan.<lb />
Thelonehemtocombatall these<lb />
villains is Batman. et Batman gets<lb />
no more screen time than anv one<lb />
villain. This film would have been<lb />
more appropriately titled: Lunahc<lb />
Villains Return.<lb />
Deyito,PfeifferandWalkenare<lb />
all magnificent. They really sink<lb />
their teeth into their roles. The<lb />
trouble is that not nun h is there for<lb />
them to sink their teeth into. Each<lb />
actor gets a few moments of glory<lb />
but nothing more. Having only one<lb />
villain in the story would have al-<lb />
lowed a much fuller treatment.<lb />
Too manv villains trulv can<lb />
spoil a movie. So much effort is<lb />
spent to explain each villain's moti-<lb />
vation that no energy is left to pro-<lb />
pel the plot. Indeed the scenes are<lb />
stitched together as badlv as<lb />
Carwoman's outfit.<lb />
Perhaps because Jack<lb />
Nicholson's presence could not be<lb />
recreated the filmmakers thought<lb />
three villains could compensate.<lb />
Perhaps the commercialism sub-<lb />
verted the filmmakers' belief in their<lb />
artistry. The end result is a showy<lb />
film with no substance.<lb />
On a scale of one to ten. Barman<lb />
Returns rates a six.<lb />

Material Issue bombs with latest<lb />
Many incredible sets.<lb />
A plethora of talented actors.<lb />
A visionary director.<lb />
One pitiful script<lb />
Thus describes Batman Returns.<lb />
Batman stormed into theaters<lb />
in the summer of 1989 as one of the<lb />
most hyped films of all time. People<lb />
went to see Batman not because of<lb />
positive word of mouth (although<lb />
that probably helped) but because<lb />
Warner Brothers convinced the<lb />
public that Batman was a major<lb />
even t. M ajor ad vertisers bought in to<lb />
the action. Batman was a media cre-<lb />
ated sensation.<lb />
Batman Returns hopes to create<lb />
the .same mania. The television is<lb />
littered with Batman ads, from<lb />
Happy Meals to dolls to soft drinks.<lb />

Contrary to the beliefs of Mime,<lb />

the ass of rock music Interesting<lb />
things can be done with them, de-<lb />
spite the fact that every band on<lb />
Earth has done one. The reason that<lb />
most love songs smel I is that they're<lb />
easy to write. Any son writer wor-<lb />
thy of the title i.in crank one out in<lb />
his sleep. No effort equals no qual-<lb />
ity, and the world is left with a junk<lb />
heap of crappy music.<lb />
That's where Material Issue<lb />
comes in. Their new est release, Des<lb />
f!rMffpnUm:rrsoschiKk-full(ifbad<lb />
songs about love. The music is so<lb />
stale it could have been done by any<lb />
bad alty band in the last 10 years,<lb />
anduVlvncsan-onlvslightlyabove<lb />
the level of Wilson Thillips. Weigh-<lb />
ing in at 13 Mings and 43 minutes,<lb />
the album is a lightweight effort all<lb />
the way around Hopefully, Desti<lb />
nation Universe will skip lightly<lb />
along to an early, painful death.<lb />
Until then, the public should be<lb />
made aware of how unbelievably<lb />
lame tliis album is. In the interest of<lb />
fairness, however, the three moder-<lb />
ately decent tracks should be trot-<lb />
ted out for examination.<lb />
The first of these is the first<lb />
single, "What Carls Want Aside<lb />
from being a little sexist, this is a fun<lb />
tune. With powerful, shouting vo-<lb />
cals hung over a truly infectious<lb />
guitar hcxik, this song rises above<lb />
the crap and deserves classic single<lb />
status. How could anyone resist a<lb />
chorus like this: "1 want a man with<lb />
lips just like Mick Jagger Rod<lb />
Stewart's hair and Keith Richards'<lb />
stagger?"<lb />
The other very gixxl track on<lb />
Destination Unnvrse is "Ballad of a<lb />
Lonely Man Hard, fast and even<lb />
grungv, this one starts out as what<lb />
MOV to be the story of a broken-<lb />
hearted man, as told to his bar-<lb />
tender. This somewhat predictable<lb />
pattern takes a sudden gut-twisting<lb />
left turn, however, as the lonely<lb />
man opens his jacket to reveal the<lb />
gun he used to kill his cheatin'<lb />
woman. "You got a tale to tell the<lb />
man says to the bartender. "Make<lb />
sure it's a headline Tell 'em that<lb />
you knew me well<lb />
The final good track on the al-<lb />
bum is "Next Big Thing" which,<lb />
truth be told, is only rrwxierately<lb />
gixxj. M usical quality doesn't stand<lb />
out from the crowd on this one, but<lb />
the lyrics do rise, however slightly,<lb />
above the mass of mediocrity. Ifs<lb />
about meeting an artsy girl in a bar<lb />
and listening to her make fun of the<lb />
other patroas until she gets up and<lb />
leaves. Only an almost-love-song,<lb />
"Next Big Thing" mainly seems<lb />
good because it's not riddled with<lb />
thecliches the more traditional love<lb />
songs here spout like geysers.<lb />
Consider, for instance, this sear-<lb />
ing lyric from "Everything "And 1<lb />
would give everything that 1 own<lb />
I 'd give you my heart and this skin<lb />
and these bones The sun, the rrx x n,<lb />
the earth, the sky The motorcycle<lb />
that I like to ride Note that not<lb />
only does this rip off a couple of<lb />
Motown tunes, but the final lines<lb />
don't even rhyme!<lb />
Or how about Mime deathless<lb />
poetry from "Whole Lorta You?"<lb />
"Don't cry or end it all 'cause I'll be<lb />
here for you Say gxxJbye to the<lb />
other one 'cause they're nothing if<lb />
they're new Then there's "Don't<lb />
You Think I Know "Hello starry<lb />
eyes, it's just me And check out <lb />
well, never mind. Finding bad lines<lb />
on this album is just hxi easy.<lb />
In general, the Ivncs that aren't<lb />
cliches are blatantly lifted from<lb />
other, better Mings or else make no<lb />
sense whatMX'ver.<lb />
Occasionally an inventive line<lb />
or guitar lick sneaks in, but for the<lb />
most part Material Issue follows the<lb />
medi(XTity party' line. The most in-<lb />
furiating thing about it, more infu-<lb />
natmg than the medix:rity itself, is<lb />
the band's attitude toward its style.<lb />
Lead singerguitarist Jim<lb />
ElliMin has been quoted as saying<lb />
"1 think it takes a lot more balls to<lb />
write Mings with girl's names than<lb />
to jam screwdrivers in the bridge of<lb />
your guitar To cop a hipper-than-<lb />
thou attitude over such a diligent<lb />
pursuit of the mundane puts Mate-<lb />
rial Issue even lower on the food-<lb />
chain than Destination timtrscdid.<lb />
Andbesides,atleastscrewdriv-<lb />
ers would be interesting.<lb />
rep irters for the past month that he<lb />
approached Batman Returns as an<lb />
onginal film versus a sequel. In<lb />
keeping with this idea, he created<lb />
completely new sets, radically dif-<lb />
ferent villains and even set the film<lb />
in winter to alter the time of year<lb />
from Batman. Yet the fact simply is<lb />
that Batman Returns is a sequel.<lb />
The tone has already been set<lb />
bv the previous film. The audience<lb />
knows to expect odd villains, a<lb />
mysterious hem and a dark atmo-<lb />
sphere. Warner Brothers knows this<lb />
is a sequel. They greedily await the<lb />
dollars that are already coming in<lb />
because of the advertising dollars<lb />
they- have already corralled.<lb />
hVitirwri Returns succeeds only<lb />
in creating many commercial ready<lb />
images. There are three, yes three<lb />
ma jorvillains: Penguin, Catwoman<lb />
and Max Shreak. The script spends<lb />
mi much time making sure each<lb />
villain gets enough screen time that<lb />
it forgets to tell a story.<lb />
Danny Devito's Penguin<lb />
waddles frighteningly through his<lb />
scenes. With flippers for hands, a<lb />
beak-like nose and a penchant for<lb />
eating raw fish he looks every bit<lb />
like the animal from which he de-<lb />
rives his name. His parents threw<lb />
him in the sewer when he was a<lb />
baby because of his oddities like<lb />
eating the house cat.<lb />
The Penguin's appetite for raw<lb />
fish is matched by his lascivious<lb />
one for young females and his spite-<lb />
ful one for his parents. He also plots<lb />
revenge on the young of Gotham<lb />

Farce debuts in 'Lend Me A Tenor'<lb />
By Joe Horst<lb />
Assistant Entertainment Editor<lb />
Farce in the theater is generally<lb />
used to define a particular form of<lb />
comedy. To quote Jessica Davis,<lb />
farce is "a dramatic work (usually<lb />
short) which has for its sole object to<lb />
excite laughter "Lend MeaTenor<lb />
the East Carolina Playhouse's next<lb />
installment in their 1992 Summer<lb />
Theater season, is a prime example<lb />
of this definition.<lb />
" Lend Me a Tenor" is the hilari-<lb />
ous story of mistaken identities<lb />
when a theater-owner's assistant is<lb />
pressed intoreplacingafamousltal-<lb />
ian tenor in their performance of<lb />
Verdi's "Otello Not only does the<lb />
assistant win the audience over in<lb />
the role, but he also beds his would-<lb />
be girlfriend impersonating the<lb />
tenor. Slamming doors, flying fruit<lb />
and bodies in the closet all combine<lb />
to create a zany and fun-filled night<lb />
of entertainment<lb />
John Shearin, director of "Lend<lb />
Me a Tenor has brought in out-<lb />
standing talent for this pnxiuction.<lb />
William McNulty will play the tenor<lb />
!l Stupendo and Paris Peet will be<lb />
"Max the assistant. Both Peet and<lb />
McNulty have worked together in<lb />
lastsummer's "The Nerd" and their<lb />
combination is sure to be a cawd-<lb />
pleaser.<lb />
Tickets for "Lend Me a Tenor"<lb />
are on sale now at the McGinnis<lb />
Theater box office. Prices are $1750<lb />
for adults, $1350 for senior citizens<lb />
and $750 for children under 12. The<lb />

nighf s performance. Tickets bought<lb />

lar adult price.<lb />

City to retaliate for his miserable<lb />
youth.<lb />
Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman<lb />
also plots revenge. Her revengecen-<lb />
ters around Max Shreak (Christo-<lb />
pher Walken). Selina Kyle,<lb />
Catwoman's real name, worked for<lb />
Shreak. When she opened some<lb />
protected files Shreak becomes irate<lb />
and tossed Selina out the window.<lb />
Upon being revived by cats, Selina<lb />
becomes Catwoman.<lb />
ToovercompensateforSelina's<lb />
meekness, Catwoman dresses<lb />
kinkily in a body tight black suit<lb />
and brandishesawhip. When Selina<lb />
smashes all her "nice" possessions,<lb />
she is destroying her old self.<lb />
The third important villain,<lb />
who gets nearly the screen time that<lb />
Penguin and Catwoman do, is Max<lb />
Shreak. He plans to build a power<lb />
plant that wil 1 capture energy which<lb />
can then be sold back to the city at<lb />
anenormousprofit. Unlike theother<lb />
two villains, Shreak's mask is not<lb />
visible. Shreak's mask is his philan-<lb />
thropy. He pretends to help the city<lb />
financially so that he can fulfill his<lb />
master plan.<lb />
Thelonehero tocombat all these<lb />
villains is Batman. Yet Batman gets<lb />
no more screen time than any one<lb />
villain. This film would have been<lb />
more appropriately titled: Lunatic<lb />
Villains Return.<lb />
Devito,PfeifferandWalkenare<lb />
all magnificent. They really sink<lb />
their teeth into their roles. The<lb />
trouble is that not much is there for<lb />
them to sink their teeth into. Each<lb />
actor gets a few moments of glory<lb />
but nothing more. Having only one<lb />
villain in the story would have al-<lb />
lowed a much fuller treatment<lb />
Too many villains truly can<lb />
spoil a movie. So much effort is<lb />
spent to explain each villain's moti-<lb />
vation that no energy' is left to pro-<lb />
pel the plot. Indeed the scenes are<lb />
stitched together as badly as<lb />
Catwoman's outfit.<lb />
Perhaps because Jack<lb />
Nicholson's presence could not be<lb />
recreated the filmmakers thought<lb />
three villains could compensate.<lb />
Perhaps the commercialism sub-<lb />
verted the filmmakers' belief in their<lb />
artistry The end result is a showy<lb />
film with no substance.<lb />
On a scale of one to ten, Batman<lb />
Returns rates a six.<lb />

In these days of pinver tennis, Agassi<lb />
illustrated that thundering groundstrokes<lb />
can be just as important as rxxMning serves.<lb />
For three years, from 1988-90, Agassi<lb />
hadn't even bothered to show up at<lb />
Wimbledon preferring to stay home in Las<lb />

Wimbledon's predominantly white dress<lb />

Commentary I<lb />
Washington can only look back and remember<lb />
By Robert S. Todd<lb />
Assistant Sports Editor<lb />
Marc Washington is a huge man. He<lb />
can bench press over 500 pounds. Many<lb />
people thought he would be playing pro-<lb />
fessional football next season. Instead he<lb />
will probably be sitting in a jail cell think-<lb />
ing about what might have been. What a<lb />
waste.<lb />
He must bare the brunt of his actions<lb />
nobody put a gun in his hand and<lb />
made him rob a bank. He has no one to<lb />
blame except himself.<lb />
However, he is in no way an indict-<lb />
ment of all theathleteswhoworkhard to<lb />
live honest and meaningful lives.<lb />
Washington may someday realize<lb />
what a cruel system ftxrtball can be.<lb />
Universities take young men outof high<lb />
school and promise them fame and for-<lb />
tune. Their course schedules are made<lb />
for them, their food, books and tuition is<lb />
paid for in exchange for long, hard<lb />
hours on the field.<lb />
Football players are not allowed to<lb />
have jobs on the side. For players with-<lb />
out rich parents, this can cause envy of<lb />
those able to buy clothes, CDs, or even<lb />
visit family in a time of crisis.<lb />
The football program was respon-<lb />
sible f.r keeping him in school and that is<lb />
all. Washington was responsible for get-<lb />
ting by in class and pumping iron.<lb />
When his football career turned sour,<lb />
he apparently was not capable of dealing<lb />
with the pressure of a bleak future. He<lb />
seems to have gained nothing from ECU<lb />
except weight. This school has failed in its<lb />
promise to Washington. Not a promise of<lb />
football stardom, but a promise of a col-<lb />
lege education with the implication of a<lb />
better life.<lb />
Not all college graduates are saints<lb />
but society expects more from them than<lb />
bank robbery (at least insider trading).<lb />
Washington missed graduation by nine<lb />
hours.<lb />
Perhaps he felt the only thing in con-<lb />
trol of his future was football. When that<lb />
was gone, he lost all sense of the control in<lb />
his life.<lb />
it is truly unfortunate Washington<lb />
did not learn from the mistakes of his<lb />
brother, who is also in prison for bank<lb />
robbery. That he thought he could get<lb />
away with robbing a bank in broad day-<lb />
light in the heart of a large city is amazing.<lb />
What was he thinking?<lb />
He probably was not thinking at all.<lb />
Like him or not, you've got to give<lb />
Andre Agassi credit. The man who has<lb />
screamed "Image is everything" for two<lb />
years has realized that image isn't every-<lb />
thing, and maybe winning is.<lb />
Since he burst into professional tennis<lb />
in 1987, Agassi has been the rebellious,<lb />
sassy, bad-boy, but never the victor in a<lb />
Grand Slamevent. In the last rwoyears, he<lb />
has plaved in three Grand Slam finals, but<lb />
the trophv always bore someone else's<lb />
name.<lb />
Agassi seemed to step on the court as<lb />
the fans' favorite and walked off the loser.<lb />
His critics began taunting him three years<lb />
ago, saving he would never win a ma)or<lb />
tournament not for lack of talent, bu t for<lb />
lack of maturity and focus.<lb />
Ironically, Agassi displayed both fo-<lb />
cus and maturity duringhis stunning fort-<lb />
night at Wimbledon. Even in his three five-<lb />
set matches, the champion remained fo-<lb />
cused, never regressing to his old, childish<lb />
antics. He tossed not a single racket in<lb />
anger and he kept his shirt on when the<lb />
championship match was over. Not once<lb />
did the cocky teen-aged antics of previous<lb />
years return.<lb />
When asked about his success<lb />
throughout the tournament, Agassi ac-<lb />
knowledged those around him: his coach,<lb />
his family, even his opponents. He thanked<lb />
John McEnroe numerous times for his ex-<lb />
pert ad v ice and en ticism on the grass court<lb />
game. When asked before the final what it<lb />
felt like to play in his fourth Grand Slam<lb />
final, Agassi responded that it wasn't his<lb />
fourth Grand Slam final, it was Wimbledon<lb />
and "that's where it begins and ends He<lb />
knowingly put the tournament in an elite<lb />
class of its own, and eventually, the cham-<lb />
pionship put Agassi in an elite class.<lb />
Agassi truly acted the part of the ma-<lb />
ture tennis pro, and that is what he became<lb />
when Goran Ivanisevic netted the final<lb />
ball in the championship match Sunday.<lb />
Years of trying to prove his worth in the<lb />
tennis world came to an end. As he lay<lb />
face-down on the grass at the All-England<lb />
club, the world could finally acknowledge<lb />
that the long-hai red ,earring-wearing rebel<lb />
was finally a man to be reckoned with.<lb />
While in dollars, he has been worth<lb />
millions for three years or more, his win<lb />
Sundav improved his wealth in the tennis<lb />
world immeasurably. After the presenta-<lb />
tion of trophies, Agassi told reporters that<lb />
he would give up everything he owned to<lb />
keep the title.<lb />
This new-found humility and appre-<lb />
ciation for the game are the major factors in<lb />
his new, more likeable image.<lb />
Not only has Agassi finally won a<lb />
Grand Slam tournament, but he has also<lb />
won the approval of many of his former<lb />
critics.<lb />
Perhaps that is his greatest winning.<lb />
