Alcohol program edi<lb/>
By LeClair Harper<lb/>
Assistant News F-ditor<lb/>
ECU offers educational pro-<lb/>
grams for students who violate<lb/>
University Policy on drug abuse, to<lb/>
help them learn about alcohol and<lb/>
its use.<lb/>
An alcohol education and coun<lb/>
selmg program is involved in disci-<lb/>
plinary actions taken against stu<lb/>
dents who have alcohol-related m<lb/>
fractions. University policy is not to<lb/>
punish students who seek rehabili-<lb/>
tation.<lb/>
The program operates on two<lb/>
levels according to Cheryl Colvin,<lb/>
an advisor with Boosting Alcohol<lb/>
Consciousness Concerning the<lb/>
1 lealth of University Students<lb/>
Hie first level is an alcohol edu-<lb/>
cation workshop which educates<lb/>
students about the consumption ol<lb/>
alcohol and its effects. It is usually<lb/>
mandatory fbrstudentswithoffenses<lb/>
such as drinking underage. Colvin<lb/>
said.<lb/>
Although it is disciplinary in<lb/>
nature, the program is Open to Stu-<lb/>
dents who an? interested in learning<lb/>
about alcohol and its effects.<lb/>
The second level is an eight<lb/>
session alcohol-education and treat-<lb/>
ment program run by a certified<lb/>
substance abuse counselor. This<lb/>
program is mandatory for students<lb/>
who commit niaior infractions such<lb/>
.is causing harm to oneself or to<lb/>
others<lb/>
Students mav participate in the<lb/>
second level ot the program only<lb/>
once before thev receive more strict<lb/>
punishment such as suspension<lb/>
Bush<lb/>
This program includesa $60 fee<lb/>
to students.<lb/>
rheeight-session pn igram starts<lb/>
with an assessment session and in-<lb/>
cludes sessions on the effects of al-<lb/>
cohol, diseases associated with al-<lb/>
cohol, stress, self esteem and time<lb/>
management. The program ends<lb/>
with an exit review.<lb/>
Thirteen students were involved<lb/>
in the program last semester Ac-<lb/>
cording to a report from Dr Frank<lb/>
Hawkins, who runs the program,<lb/>
most oi the students involved felt<lb/>
thev hat! gamed new information<lb/>
about alcohol.<lb/>
l"he sessions cm stress were<lb/>
particularly helpful according to the<lb/>
report.<lb/>
Every student involved said<lb/>
they had changed their drinking<lb/>
hahitshv either drinking more mod-<lb/>
erately or abstaining altogether<lb/>
According to I Van of Students<lb/>
Dr. Ronald Speier, alcohol is a major<lb/>
factor in disciplinary action taken on<lb/>
campus<lb/>
I he majority ot our violations<lb/>
ot the student code of conduct have<lb/>
alcohol involved in some wa he<lb/>
slid<lb/>
Hie universit) hopes to find<lb/>
ways to reach students off campus<lb/>
since the two currenl programs deal<lb/>
with students in voiced in infractions<lb/>
on campus, he said.<lb/>

Demonstrators seek same goal<lb/>
With the Persian Gulf War entering its<lb/>
third week, tensions at home are still growing<lb/>
Around the country, rallies and protests occur<lb/>
daily as Americans voice their sentiments and<lb/>
opinions concerning the conflict half-a-globe<lb/>
away<lb/>
Unfortunately, a portion ol the actors<lb/>
involved on both sides of this new-found<lb/>
activist ism are engaging in hate tactics based on<lb/>
misconception<lb/>
On Ian 23, ECU students held a rally on<lb/>
the Mall in support ol the U.S. troops, which as<lb/>
ol Monday numbered over 500,000 in the Per-<lb/>
sian (lull Several ol the pro-troops demonstra-<lb/>
tors accosted pro-peace demonstrators with<lb/>
insults and saliva.<lb/>
What transpired on our campus is only<lb/>
a small example of what is going on around our<lb/>
country, particularly in the large urban areas<lb/>
where greater outlets for expression are avail-<lb/>
able Manx of the Desert Storm supporters<lb/>
perceive the protesters as un-American, stand-<lb/>
ing against our tamilv and friends overseas<lb/>
both sides are, for the most part, wrong<lb/>
es, unfortunately, there are some<lb/>
people who are genuinely happy that we are at<lb/>
war, and want dead Arab bodies as an esteem-<lb/>
builder. There are also people who try to gain<lb/>
support against our system ol government. It is<lb/>
probably sate to assume, however, that these<lb/>
men tali ties are representative of minorities, and<lb/>
not fair assessments of either side<lb/>
You would think Americans would<lb/>
know the dangers ol Libeling by now, but evi-<lb/>
dently not. Viewing a group with a broad and<lb/>
short definition in mind is much easier than<lb/>
devoting a legitimate amount of thought to the<lb/>
subject Thai would mean admitting that people<lb/>
and wars ,ire actually complex.<lb/>
This is not to take either a pro-troops or<lb/>
pro-peace stance, but rather to state that both<lb/>
divergent camps ultimately have the same ob-<lb/>
jectives to bring our fighting people home and<lb/>
bring them back alive.<lb/>
Of course these activists are going to<lb/>
diametrically opposed ? one can only be so<lb/>
persuasive when trying to'cram an entire phi-<lb/>
losophy or belief on to a signboard orintoa two<lb/>
second newsbvte. This doesn't excuse anv of us<lb/>
from looking past the shouting and signs and<lb/>
using our reasoning ? the only tool which ends<lb/>
hostility.<lb/>
We already have one war going on in the<lb/>
Persian Gulf. We don't need another one here.<lb/>

Upon opening your pa-<lb/>

enraged to find that my re-<lb/>

pared down to a skeleton of<lb/>
unrelated paragraphs, com-<lb/>
pletely devoid of its original<lb/>
purpose and timbre.<lb/>
My intent was to decry,<lb/>
through the use of historical<lb/>
references, the constant<lb/>
building of parking lots<lb/>
around the campus proper.<lb/>
The butchered version read<lb/>
as though a republican had<lb/>
written it. But I suppose<lb/>
that's what can be expected<lb/>
from a conservative paper<lb/>
like The East Carolinian.<lb/>

To the Editor:<lb/>
I would like to say that I<lb/>
was very relieved to find that<lb/>
there are some students at ECU<lb/>
who are concerned enough<lb/>
about Operation Desert Storm<lb/>
to express what they believe in<lb/>
the face of opposition or com-<lb/>
placency.<lb/>
Campuses all across the<lb/>
nation are actively protesting or<lb/>
supporting Bush's decision for<lb/>
War in the Gulf. How about East<lb/>
Carolina?<lb/>
Often the media plays on<lb/>
one side of an issue, usually the<lb/>
majority. These flyers are just an<lb/>
attempt to educate the public as<lb/>
to what is really going on in our<lb/>
country and what the U.S. gov-<lb/>
ernment and this war is really all<lb/>
about.<lb/>
Lastly, I would like to com-<lb/>
ment on your editorial colum-<lb/>
nists, Scott Maxwell's and Tim E.<lb/>
Ha mpton' s addi rions to The East<lb/>
Carolinian issue on Jan. 15.1 was<lb/>
very impressed with both "Bush<lb/>

support both columnist's opin-<lb/>

Afterattending the "Support<lb/>

mall fan. 23, the actions of some<lb/>
participants compelled me to<lb/>
write this letter.<lb/>
Many of the troop support-<lb/>
ers who attended the rally<lb/>
screamed at, spat on, and ver-<lb/>
bally abused another smaller<lb/>
groupot supporters who tried to<lb/>
express a peaceful alternative to<lb/>
the death and destructionof war.<lb/>
Those in favor ot war<lb/>
chanted "U.S.A U.S.A at those<lb/>
in favor of peace, as if this were a<lb/>
football game and those in the<lb/>
home crowd might out-shout the<lb/>
opposition.<lb/>
Worst of all, many of those<lb/>
who consider themselves to be<lb/>
patriotic Americans, but who are<lb/>
in tolerant of populardissent, told<lb/>
the "peace people" to leave the<lb/>
country!<lb/>
The "peace people" are not<lb/>
the enemy. We are as American<lb/>
as any citizen of this country, for<lb/>
we were bom here, live here,<lb/>
work here, love here and pay<lb/>

of pertinent issues are positive<lb/>

So I wonderabout those who<lb/>

1 also wonder if the "pro-<lb/>

The Israeli-Palestinian<lb/>

are at the rwt of this conflict<lb/>
Neither will be solved with the<lb/>
destruction of Iraq or the death<lb/>
of Saddam Hussein (along with<lb/>
the deaths of many Americans<lb/>
and thousands of innocent Iraqi<lb/>
civilians).<lb/>
I don't support what<lb/>

Protest will not stop Gulf War now<lb/>
As a sergeant in the Marine<lb/>
Corps Reserve facing the possi-<lb/>
bility of deployment, I watch<lb/>
the news with a en tical eye. Have<lb/>
you noticed what I have?<lb/>
America's overwhelming<lb/>
support for the Gulf War is<lb/>
getting lost on the evening news,<lb/>
and in some papers, and people<lb/>
are being mislead into believing<lb/>
that a big part of America is<lb/>
against this war.<lb/>
No rational person I know,<lb/>
who is well read, and informed,<lb/>
is against the war. I realize that<lb/>
for many it'shard to see through<lb/>
the "anti-war" protests.<lb/>
Facts suggest these protest-<lb/>
ers are only a fraction of the<lb/>
population, making up for their<lb/>
small numbers by being bois-<lb/>
terous.<lb/>
Additionally, their protests<lb/>
offer editors and producers a<lb/>
convenient counterbalance to<lb/>
the heavily covered action in<lb/>
the Gulf.<lb/>
Other than the internal strife<lb/>
in the Soviet Union, not much<lb/>
else is going on, just the War<lb/>
and the protests.<lb/>
On the news on Jan. 21, I<lb/>
heard one soldier say, "We're<lb/>
ready to go in there and do the<lb/>
job, no matter what any pro-<lb/>
testers say<lb/>
I can tell you first hand, the<lb/>
last thing I would want on my<lb/>
mind on the way into combat is<lb/>
doubt about support back home.<lb/>
Soldiers who are mentally<lb/>
preparing to kill and possibly<lb/>
die would like to think that it is<lb/>
what their country back home<lb/>
would like for them to do. Any<lb/>
doubts about this are highly<lb/>
damaging to morale<lb/>
Most evidencesuggests that<lb/>
sanctions may not have worked,<lb/>
no matter how long we waited.<lb/>
The protesters do not seem<lb/>
to realize that talk about sanc-<lb/>
tions now is just idle chatter.<lb/>
There is no point in even dis-<lb/>
cussing it. We will not call off<lb/>
the war and return to sanctions,<lb/>
so drop it.<lb/>
These protesters claim,<lb/>
"This isn't like the Vietnam pro-<lb/>
tests; we're for the troops, we just<lb/>
want them home Well, sure<lb/>
you do, and they want to be home,<lb/>
safe and sound. But unfortu-<lb/>
nately, sanctions, negotiations,<lb/>
and pleading did not influence<lb/>
Iraq.<lb/>
The threat of war with a<lb/>
multinational force of a half-a-<lb/>
million men made no difference<lb/>
to Saddam. We are at war.<lb/>
Members of the armed<lb/>
forces of the international coa-<lb/>
lition face the most trying, bar-<lb/>
baric and revolting capabilities<lb/>
of man ? war.<lb/>
Many of them are my<lb/>
friends, and I may soon be there.<lb/>
My feelings are similar to<lb/>
most military members; I don't<lb/>
look forward to going, but feel<lb/>
that there are good reasons for<lb/>
driving Iraq from Kuwait, and<lb/>
putting an end to Saddam<lb/>
Hussein's aggression.<lb/>
In dosing, I must say that<lb/>
America is wonderful. Not only<lb/>
can we protest; we do protest<lb/>
Not enough censorship, too<lb/>
much censorship; abortion, no<lb/>
abortion; bum the flag, don't<lb/>
bum the flag.<lb/>
If the United States had done<lb/>
nothing about the Iraqi inva-<lb/>
sion, I'd be willing to bet that<lb/>
these same protesters would be<lb/>
marching around, beating<lb/>
drums for the poor citizens ol<lb/>
Kuwait; much as they've dom<lb/>
about South Africa, China and<lb/>
the Eastern Bloc countries , <lb/>
Europe<lb/>
Protest isgood. It stimulates<lb/>
thought. The problem with the-<lb/>
"anh-war" protests, though is<lb/>
timing. The time for protest<lb/>
marches was back in August, or<lb/>
October, or even December<lb/>
Protests now warn not going to<lb/>
stop the war, or bring the troops<lb/>
home.<lb/>
And even worse, just be-<lb/>
cause "we care about the<lb/>
