Library hours extended<lb />
By CINDY BROOME<lb />
News Editor<lb />
Library hours will be extended<lb />
until 3 a.m. during final exams,<lb />
according to Reed Warren, SGA<lb />
vice-president.<lb />
"I'm very happy that we<lb />
received a response as quickly as<lb />
we did said Warren.<lb />
Warren discussed the matter<lb />
with Dee Brockman, circulation<lb />
librarian.<lb />
"We went after a 24-hour<lb />
study hall, but decided to keep it<lb />
open until 3 a.m<lb />
Warren said the library at<lb />
N.C. State operates the same<lb />
hours for final exams.<lb />
Two graduate students will<lb />
work until 3 a.m. and a coffee<lb />
machine will be set up in the<lb />
lobby for those who remain late.<lb />
The graduate students will not be<lb />
regular members of the librarian<lb />
staff.<lb />
"This is an experimental<lb />
thing to see if there's interest<lb />
said Warren. "If there's a really<lb />
good response, we'll try to go for<lb />
24 hours<lb />
Regular book check-out will<lb />
end approximately 11 or 12 p.m.<lb />
Money to operate the library<lb />
until 3 a.m. will come from the<lb />
library's budget, according to<lb />
Warren.<lb />
"Since they've gone to the<lb />
trouble of working it into their<lb />
budget, I urge students to use<lb />
it<lb />
'She (Blackman) was really<lb />
helpful said Warren. "If we<lb />
had gone into other channels fa<lb />
money, it may have taken long-<lb />
er<lb />
"Now people can work on<lb />
papers without being interrup-<lb />

Senior citizens heip fight crime-infested areas<lb />
in kiivo a,i 3(or coriac ro mM The elderly are easily victim- mmmH aimnd n.wu - k i- ia<lb />
In Marioopa County, Ariz<lb />
over 200 elderly citizens have left<lb />
their flower gardens and golf<lb />
oourses to form the Sun City<lb />
Possee-a group of amateur aime<lb />
fighters dedicated to running<lb />
burgulars, rapists, and murderers<lb />
out of town.<lb />
After a series of rapes last fall<lb />
in Washington, D.C neighbors<lb />
in t!ie Adams-Morgan District put<lb />
together an artist's sketch of the<lb />
man some of them had seen.<lb />
When the suspect, who lived in<lb />
the neighborhood, walked into a<lb />
liquor store one night, he was<lb />
recognized and held until the<lb />
polios came.<lb />
All over America, private<lb />
citizens are organizing just such<lb />
"posses" to fight aime in their<lb />
own neighborhoods.<lb />
While aiminologists cite the<lb />
severe winter cold as a major<lb />
factor in last years deaeased<lb />
crime rates, law enforcement<lb />
officials point to the growth of a<lb />
oommunity anti-aime movement.<lb />
Los Angeles Polioe Chief Ed<lb />
Davis aedits the proliferation of<lb />
neighborhood anti-aime groups<lb />
with a 25 per cent reduction of<lb />
crnne there.<lb />
But others, including some<lb />
polios and residents of poor and<lb />
black neighborhoods, see the<lb />
boom of amateur aime-stoppers<lb />
as a sinister threat liable to<lb />
promote racist attitudes and to<lb />
produce unofficial police spying.<lb />
"I think they could turn<lb />
into racists or into a bunch of<lb />
vigilantes warned John Jones<lb />
of Washington's Adams-Morgan<lb />
Organization (AMO), a commun-<lb />
ity action alliance that refused to<lb />
cooperate in the neighborhood<lb />
manhunt and seizure of the<lb />
alleged rapist.<lb />
AMO representatives point<lb />
out the citizen aime fighters were<lb />
mostly oomfortable, middle-aged<lb />
professionals who work for the<lb />
federal government-and that few<lb />
of them were blacks and Latinos<lb />
who recently made up most of the<lb />
neighborhood's population.<lb />
Despite AMO's criticisms,<lb />
many of the aime fighters are<lb />
clearly without racial motivation.<lb />
Black Men Against Rape, for<lb />
example, was organized in black<lb />
southeast Washington, D.C<lb />
after a series of rapes and<lb />
murders went too long unsolved<lb />
with insufficient attention from<lb />
the polioe department.<lb />
A loss of faith in the polioe<lb />
accounts for the evolution of<lb />
many urbm aime-fighting dubs.<lb />
"The police just can't handle<lb />
all the rapes and muggings<lb />
anymore says one dty cop.<lb />
People have to start standing up<lb />
for themselves. Two or three<lb />
years ago, we couldn't get any<lb />
information on a hit-and-run<lb />
aocident because people didn't<lb />
want to get involved. Now that's<lb />
changing. People are getting<lb />
involved-there's no longer a<lb />
choios about it.<lb />
Beginning with residential<lb />
security surveys and marking<lb />
property with identification num-<lb />
bers, Bowie Against Burglary, a<lb />
Maryland group, plans block<lb />
watches or block patrols. Armed<lb />
with maps listing their neighbors'<lb />
names, addresses and phone<lb />
numbers, volunteers look for<lb />
suspidous activity and immed-<lb />
iately report their suspidons to<lb />
their neighbas as well as to the<lb />
polioe.<lb />
"One block had a problem<lb />
with vandalism says Sherry<lb />
Ann Kinikin, who organized<lb />
Bowie Against Burglary, "and it<lb />
seemed like the inddents were<lb />
occuring around sundown when<lb />
everyone was having dinner and<lb />
putting their children to bed.<lb />
They patrolled the neighbor-<lb />
hood in groups of two during the<lb />
vulnerable time periods. They'd<lb />
had seven cases of vandalism in<lb />
two weeks; since the patrol<lb />
started, they haven't seen one<lb />
"Sure, you bet these groups<lb />
cut down on aime admits one<lb />
experienced Washington police<lb />
detective. "If I'd been in Germ-<lb />
any during Hitler's day, I'd have<lb />
done the same thing. If you've got<lb />
every second house on a street<lb />
oovered, naturally it'll cut down<lb />
on aime, but it'll also expand a<lb />
real polioe state<lb />
"The problem with them is<lb />
that they don't have experience or<lb />
arrest authority. They have to<lb />
turn to the police, and pretty soon<lb />
they're all working for the polioe.<lb />
Otherwise they become vigil-<lb />
antes<lb />
he elderly are easily vidim- composed almost entirely of<lb />
ized and more anti-aime dubs<lb />
are becoming geared to aime<lb />
prevention by and for senia<lb />
dtizens. In Marioopa County,<lb />
Ariz where 3,000 dtizens make<lb />
up the biggest volunteer law<lb />
enforcement program in the<lb />
country, the Sun City Possee is<lb />
senoir dtizens.<lb />
Yet despite the successes,<lb />
some aitics still question the<lb />
advisability of so much aime<lb />
consdousness. "Although I am<lb />
taking more security measures to<lb />
proted myself says one man<lb />
who's joined a aime prevention<lb />
dub in Washington, "I am left<lb />
with a new sense of insecurity.<lb />
I have more lights, more<lb />
locks, but everytime I come<lb />
home, I wonder if someone has<lb />
been here. And at night when I'm<lb />
lying in bed, I no longer think<lb />

T. J. Payne for<lb />
Speaker of Leg.<lb />
The 1977-78 SGA Legislature is elected and will<lb />
meet for the first time Monday. The first order of<lb />
business will be to elect a Speaker. FOUNTAIN-<lb />
HEAD strongly endorses Tommy Joe Payne, day<lb />
student legislator, for the post.<lb />
As a day student legislator last year, Payne<lb />
served on the Appropriations Committee and the<lb />
Communications Board. As one of the most active<lb />
members of the Appropriation Committee, Payne<lb />
knows the duties of the members and would be able<lb />
to make appointments to it as is the speaker's duty,<lb />
with foresight and assurance.<lb />
While on the Communications Board, Payne<lb />
demonstrated his interest and knowledge in<lb />
publications by persistent and consistent question-<lb />
ing. He accepted nothing at face-value. This not only<lb />
gives him the ability to competently appoint the two<lb />
members the Speaker does appoint, but it further<lb />
indicates his diligent conoern in the welfare of<lb />
students.<lb />
Payne has also served off campus as treasurer of<lb />
the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, thus sitting on the<lb />
fraternity's executive council. David B. Wright, Phi<lb />
Kappa Tau president, said Payne "set's objectives<lb />
and accomplishes them This determination is a<lb />
critical asset to a speaker of a legislature.<lb />
The president of the Intra-Fraternity Council,<lb />
Kirk Edgerton, describes Payne as "hard-working,<lb />
diligent, honest and capable These characteristics<lb />
are also vital to a person in such a weighty position as<lb />
Speaker.<lb />
Payne ran against Reed Warren last year for SGA<lb />
vice-president. Nevertheless, Warren says there is a<lb />
"strong tie of mutual respect" between the two of<lb />
them this year. Payne has said he wants to work with<lb />
Warren towards constructive ends. This proves<lb />
Payne's admiration for good work and leadership as<lb />
opposed to political party alliance.<lb />
SGA Pres. Neil Sessoms recently said, "Tommy<lb />
Joe is experienced and ambitious. He knows the<lb />
workings of the legislature and has a gift for getting<lb />
along with people. I'm sure if he's elected speaker,<lb />
the whole student body will benefit<lb />
Payne was top vote receiver in the day student<lb />
legislator election.<lb />
In the interest of valuable and honest govern-<lb />
ment, Tommy Joe Payne should be elected Monday<lb />
as the new Speaker of the Legislature.<lb />

Forum<lb />
Ramsey answers homecoming query<lb />
To FOUNTAINHEAD:<lb />
This is in response to the<lb />
letter which appeared in last<lb />
Tuesday's FOUNTAINHEAD<lb />
concerning the plans for Home-<lb />
coming night entertainment. (Sat.<lb />
Oct. 8th)<lb />
The letter asked why there<lb />
was to be no "traditional"<lb />
Homecoming Dance and inquired<lb />
about the status of the Carousel of<lb />
Bands which was originally plan-<lb />
ned for Mendenhall. First of all,<lb />
last year's "traditional" Home-<lb />
coming Dance lost over $3,100<lb />
even though it featured the<lb />
i nt er nat ional I y accl ai med Count<lb />
Basie Orchestra. This is reason<lb />
enough for us not to have one this<lb />
year. Besides in the four years I<lb />
have been at ECU the dance has<lb />
been the only one held at<lb />
Homecoming.<lb />
The Carousel of Bands has<lb />
been cancelled and in its place a<lb />
free concert featuring<lb />
"Delusions" has been planned<lb />
for the University Mall on Satur-<lb />
day, Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. The Carousel<lb />
of Bands would have cost well<lb />
over $1,000 whereas the concert<lb />
will cost only $500 and probably<lb />
entertain more people.<lb />
As it stands now, the Student<lb />
Union has well over $20,000<lb />
invested in Homecoming Week.<lb />
All the events are free except for<lb />
the Jimmy Buffett Concert on<lb />
Wed Oct. 5 which will cost the<lb />
students only $4. Of this we are<lb />
quite proud.<lb />

A new 'rubber-stamp' legislature in the making?<lb />
To FOUNTAINHEAD<lb />
That FOUNTAINHEAD has a<lb />
somewhat natural affinity to Neil<lb />
Sessoms is not surprising con-<lb />
sidering past associations, but<lb />
editorials such as the one in the<lb />
Sept. 20 issue of FOUNTAIN-<lb />
HEAD are both libelous and<lb />
ridiculous.<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD not only<lb />
blasts Sullivan but also last year's<lb />
legislature. This is nothing more<lb />
than guilt-by-association.<lb />
Also, who appointed Dennis<lb />
Ramsey and Co. as bastions of<lb />
honesty and integrity?<lb />
This obvious political fact-<lb />
ion (otherwise known as Student<lb />
for Honest SGA) would seek to<lb />
create for Neil the very thing<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD damned as<lb />
being representative of Sullivan's<lb />
administration: a rubber stamp<lb />
legislature.<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD is guilty of<lb />
the very accusations it has leveled<lb />
at "the Sullivan regime" (the<lb />
kettle calls the pot black?) This is<lb />
ironic. This is also very sad.<lb />
Kevin M. Shannon<lb />
Reader disagrees with film review<lb />
To FOUNTAINHEAD:<lb />
In the Sept. 27, issue of<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD, a reivew of<lb />
Lovers Like Us appeared in the<lb />
Trends section. Obviously, the<lb />
film ranked so far above the<lb />
reviewer that he was unable to<lb />
grasp the "finer points" which<lb />
make this film one of the finest to<lb />
show in Greenville since "King of<lb />
Hearts" in 1974.<lb />
I wish to thank you for the<lb />
detailed listing of the actors and<lb />
actresses previous film credits.<lb />
What purpose was achieved I do<lb />
not know, but the listing was<lb />
certainly complete.<lb />
True, Catherine Denuve is a<lb />
beautiful woman. It is a pity you<lb />
never let yourself progress past<lb />
this point to notice the brilliance of<lb />
character interpretation and<lb />
growth throughout the film. Miss<lb />
Denuve's superb performance is<lb />
due not only to her acting, but<lb />
also to the distinctive direction<lb />
she received.<lb />
If, as you stated, the film is<lb />
simply "boy meets girl, boy gets<lb />
girl why is it necessary for both<lb />
Nellie and Sanders to return to<lb />
their separate worlds? Also, why<lb />
do they live in separate homes of<lb />
their own volition when they are<lb />
alone on the island?<lb />
I have two more " fine points"<lb />
that seemed to slip your discern-<lb />
ing eye. One, Nellie did not marry<lb />
Vittorio until after the devastation<lb />
of the island. Two, Sanders<lb />
himself stated that he owned no<lb />
part of the perfume corporation;<lb />
he was merely its creative ele-<lb />
ment.<lb />
A critic must be aware.<lb />

Impressive new band Hawk<lb />

If you ventured downtown this<lb />
I past weekend in Greenville, you<lb />
may have been one of the many<lb />
people who enjoyed the music of<lb />
Hawk. This exciting, jm band,<lb />
with its impressive new material,<lb />
 is well worth watching.<lb />
The opening of Hawk's show<lb />
included many familiar songs<lb />
professionally performed. The<lb />
material, ranging from Fleet wood<lb />

instrumentally and vocally of<lb />
recording studio quality.<lb />
Harmonies were well bal-<lb />

varied enough so that each<lb />

Biology receives<lb />

ByLYNNCAVERLY<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The biology department at<lb />
ECU has been awarded an<lb />
$82,000 grant fa environmental<lb />
studies of state swamps and<lb />
faests.<lb />
According to Dr. Mark<lb />
Brinson, biology professor and<lb />
head of the studies, little is known<lb />
about this state's swamps due to<lb />
a lack of research. Swamps are a<lb />
prevalent feature of the eastern<lb />
N.C. landscape, said Brinson.<lb />
"In particular, we will be<lb />
looking at the nitrogen cycle<lb />
which involves the conversion of<lb />
nitrogen (compounds) into nit-<lb />
rogen gas said Brinson. "This<lb />
process is known as 'denitrifica-<lb />
tion<lb />
"We are trying to find out to<lb />
what extent swamps provide<lb />
for this conversion Brinson<lb />
said.<lb />
Brinson, and research assis-<lb />
tant, David Bradshaw, will con-<lb />
duct studies on the Tar River,<lb />
around Grimesland and the<lb />
Creeping River swamp near<lb />
Vanceboro.<lb />
"The reason fa studying the<lb />
swamplands on the Tar is due to<lb />
the fact that the river is typical of<lb />
the larger rivers which come from<lb />
the Piedmont Brinson said.<lb />
"The Creeping River is typical of<lb />
smaller rivers in the state<lb />
Brinson said he would like to<lb />
begin research in January and is<lb />
optimistic that this will be pos-<lb />
sible.<lb />

Wife jailed for murder<lb />
(PNS)-The defendant is Fran-<lb />
cine Hughes. She is 29, the<lb />
mother of four children-and the<lb />
ex-wife of a man police say she<lb />
tried to burn alive at their home<lb />
last winter in a small town in<lb />
Michigan.<lb />
Hughes, polioe said, set fire to<lb />
the house March 9 as her<lb />
ex-husband slept. Earlier in the<lb />
day, police had come to their<lb />
home to break up a fight between<lb />
the couple.<lb />
Later, they say, she set the<lb />
fire, bundled her children into the<lb />
car, and drove to the Ingham<lb />
County Sherriff's Department,<lb />
where she allegedly yelled to<lb />
deputies: "I did it. I did it. I<lb />
burned him up<lb />
When Francine Hughes<lb />
stands trial in October she will<lb />
bring with her a sheaf of police<lb />
reports and testimony from<lb />
friends and neighbors showing<lb />
that fa a decade James Hughes,<lb />
the dead man, had subjected her<lb />
to repeated beatings and psycho-<lb />
logical abuse.<lb />
"This case may well set a new<lb />
standard for self-defense said<lb />
attorney Nelson Brown, a founder<lb />
of the Francine Hughes Defense<lb />
Committee.<lb />
"We are not oondoning a<lb />
woman"s killing of her husband,<lb />
but we must give these women<lb />
(battered wives) alternatives to<lb />
deal with so this kind of tragedy<lb />
doesn't happen again said<lb />
Carrie Sandahl, another defense<lb />
committee member.<lb />
In 1973 FBI report found that<lb />
a quarter of all murders are<lb />
committed within the family-and<lb />
over half of those involve one<lb />
spouse killing the other.<lb />
The national crime report<lb />
estimated that there are at least<lb />
one million battered women in<lb />
American families-a factor that<lb />
figures prominently in family<lb />
murder casrr<lb />
Hughes is faced with two<lb />
charges: first-degree murder,<lb />
implying premeditation , and<lb />
felony murder, a charge used<lb />
when someone died during the<lb />
commission of a felony-in this<lb />
case, arson. Bail is normally<lb />
denied in first degree murder<lb />
cases.<lb />
Francine and James Hughes<lb />
were high school sweethearts in<lb />
Jackson, Mich and they were<lb />
married when she was in her<lb />
teens, before she completed high<lb />
school. They moved to nearby<lb />
Dansville. The four children were<lb />
born within six years.<lb />
But according to her friends<lb />
the marriage was marked from<lb />
the beginning by James Hughes'<lb />
videnoe toward his wife.<lb />
Betty Cover, Francine's class-<lb />
mate in secretarial courses at<lb />
Lansing Business University at<lb />
the time of James Hughes' death,<lb />
recalled that Francine went out of<lb />
her way to warn another class-<lb />
mate who had been hit by her<lb />
boyfriend to " be careful<lb />
Cover says Francine told her<lb />
Hughes beat her before their<lb />
marriage but that she expected<lb />
things to change.<lb />
"I was so naive Francine<lb />
told the woman.<lb />
In the six months before<lb />
James Hughes' death, Betty<lb />
Cover says she frequently noticed<lb />
large bruises on Francines body,<lb />
which Francine told her were<lb />
caused by "spankings" her ex-<lb />
husband gave her after the two<lb />
fought verbally.<lb />
"He was very jealous of her<lb />
Cover said, explaining that he<lb />
frequently showed up unexpect-<lb />
edly during an hour break in<lb />
Francine's classes to check up on<lb />
her.<lb />
The marriage ended in divorce<lb />
in 1971, and Francine moved back<lb />
to Jackson. Shortly after, how-<lb />
evern James was seriously injur-<lb />
ed in an automobile accident,<lb />
which occuredafter an argument<lb />
with Francine. According to<lb />
Francine's attorney, Hughes'<lb />
parents pressured her into return-<lb />
ing to Dansville to care for him.<lb />
Francine Hughes' enrollment<lb />
at the business school was an<lb />
attempt to get off welfare. Her<lb />
ex-husband's resentment over<lb />
her return to school was the focus<lb />
of the argument that brought<lb />
polioe to the Hughes home on the<lb />
afternoon of March 9.<lb />
James Hughes allegedly be-<lb />
came angered when Francine<lb />
began to prepare quick frozen<lb />
meals after returning from morn-<lb />
ing classes. During the fight<lb />
James tore up and burned some<lb />
of her textbooks and notebooks.<lb />
The house fire broke out<lb />
several hours later, after James<lb />
had fallen asleep in the bedroom.<lb />
Hughes died of smoke inhalation<lb />
and was found near the bedroom<lb />
door<lb />
Friends and her attorney,<lb />
however, report that Francine,<lb />
though bothered by a lack of<lb />
privacy in the small jail, feels free<lb />
from a fear that had overwhelmed<lb />
her for years.<lb />
Defense committee members<lb />
hope the case will go to trial to<lb />
demonstrate the stress and frust-<lb />
ration produced by long-term<lb />
abuse.<lb />

'Love You Live'<lb />
Welcome back to pop culture with a new album from one of the<lb />
most consistent as well as durable rock and roll bands in rook history.<lb />
LOVE YOU LIVE, the fourth live Rolling Stones album in a 10-year<lb />
soan, has just been released in the United States. Following<lb />
BETWEEN THE BUTTONS, released in '67, the critically acclaimed<lb />
GET YER YA-YA'S OUT and the never-released in the U.S<lb />
GIMME SHELTER, with six live tracks, the new double album is a<lb />
milestone in the band's unpredictable history.<lb />
The Rolling Stones have been through numerous musical changes<lb />
since their formation in the early '60's: from their early roots in the<lb />
blues, to early rock, to an interest in social and political issues, to a<lb />
Gram Parsons-influenced fling with country-reck, to glitter, to disco,<lb />
and now recorded to be leaning to reggae. The Stones, however,<lb />
always remain loyal to their blues roots.<lb />
The Stones are a rhythm-centered band. With the emphasis on<lb />
guitars, as well as Jagger, the rest of the group is able to concentrate<lb />
on supplying the foundational rhythm. Possibly this is the reason that<lb />
Watts, Wyman, md Stewart have never received due recognition. This<lb />
new live album should bring some adulation to the rhythm foundation<lb />
of the group.<lb />
LOVE YOU LIVE comes complete with interesting, if not unusual<lb />
album package artwork by pop artist Andy Warhol.<lb />
Three of the sides were recorded in Paris; one side is the much<lb />
talked about Toronto nightclub recording. From a productional<lb />
standpoint, the Toronto recordings are the better of the two. But from a<lb />
critic's point of view, the three Paris sides are the most musically<lb />
exciting.<lb />
The album appropriately opens with a short excerpt from Aaron<lb />
Copland's "Fanfare For the Common Man In the early days of the<lb />
British invasion on American music, the Beatles were the four cute<lb />
moptop dolls of the bourgeois; the Stones, however, symbolized the<lb />
slummy English louts of the common sect. They, in time, became rock<lb />
'n rolls' Satan re-incarnation, with music that caused excitement, and<lb />
often, riots.<lb />
"Honky Tonk Women" starts things going with Keith Richard's<lb />
chugging opening guitar riff. Although the song has been covered by<lb />
many, the Stones still manage to own it. Jagger's vocals are as black'<lb />
as ever, but are mixed somewhat under the instrumental section, and<lb />
consequently, are often .inaudible. This fails to disrupt the flow of the<lb />
album, as the rhythm is the ever-important message. And the Stones<lb />
are the medium.<lb />
The first half of the "If You Can't Rock Me" "Get Off My Cloud"<lb />
medley is a sure fire highlight of the double album. Richard's rhythm is<lb />
solid, with former Faces guitarist Ron Wood adding the necessary<lb />
instrumental fills and solos. Charlie Watts on drums, and Bill Wyman<lb />
on bass, are dependable rhythm workhorses throughout the album.<lb />
Watts is an exceptional rock drummer, and Wyman could play bass for<lb />
most jazz-oriented groups, as well as most rock bands.<lb />
Happy with Richard on vocals, is a more uptempo version than<lb />
the single from EXILE ON MAIN STREET. If you liked it before, you'll<lb />
like it here.<lb />
"Hot Stuff" has Wyman leading the pack with his bass runs.<lb />
Richard's leads appear a bit clumsy, but after all, it is disco. The song<lb />
is pure Stones' funk, and leads into the rocker, "Star Star Originally<lb />
titled "Starfuoker this Chuck Berry-inspired number sticks in<lb />
the mind. Mindless rock and roll but plenty of fun.<lb />
Side two opens with one of my favorite Stones' singles, "Tumbling<lb />
Dice The song is presented in a sluggish, rhythm-laid manner, with<lb />
Wood's guitar out front. Billy Preston's organ work on the number is<lb />
noteworthy, along with Watts satisfying steady back-beat. Jagger is<lb />
apparently parodying himself, while working himself as well as the<lb />
audience in a frenzy. As with most of the other songs on the album, it is<lb />
kept at single length, with very little improvision.<lb />
Fingerprint File starts out on the tails of Tumbling Dice with<lb />
plenty of funk. The two rhythm guitars work nice together, but the<lb />
band allows the number to drag on, with very little direction in mind.<lb />
"You Gotta Move from STICKY FINGERS, remains fairly bland in<lb />
its live presentation. There should have been a rocker here, possibly<lb />
"Gimme Shelter or maybe the subtle "Time Waits Fa No One<lb />
The song does manage to pick-up towards the end.<lb />
"You Can't Always Get What You Want" concludes the side. Gone<lb />
are the accompanying female vocalists, but the number still manages<lb />
to defy time. Richard's exceptionally nice intro opens along with<lb />
mellotron. Jagger's vocals are as effective on the ballad as ever, and<lb />
when the rest of the band joins in, it turns into a chugging bar song.<lb />
The third side consJstsof the Toronto nightclub recordings, entitled<lb />
the El Mocambo Side. It could also be labeled the Rolling Stones roots<lb />
side. The music here is blues, the raunchy American blues that the<lb />
Stones used to excel in. This is the music that Jagger, Richard, Watts,<lb />
Wyman, and the late Brian Jones were raised on. The audience<lb />
is mixed in considerably louder, because of the immediacy between<lb />
the stage and the crowd.<lb />
"Mannish Boy an old Muddy Waters song, borderson the banal.<lb />
If you didn't know Jagger was Caucasian, you'd swear he was black.<lb />
He also adds some mouth harp to this bluesy number. But something is<lb />
missing. Wood does stand out on slide guitar, but the number slides<lb />
right down the drain. See STONES p. 8<lb />

The Trial of Lee Harvey Oswald0<lb />
ABC network to screen controversial film<lb />
Richard Freed, producer and<lb />
guiding light behind the upcom-<lb />
ing ABC television movie, "The<lb />
Trial of Lee Harvey Oswald<lb />
believes several immediate fact-<lb />
ors are responsible for the<lb />
building public and industry<lb />
interest in the controversial film's<lb />
screening later this month.<lb />
The movie, a four-hour<lb />
drama, will be aired in two-fjour<lb />
segments on Frl Sept. 30 and<lb />
Sun Oct 2.<lb />
The film centers aruund the<lb />
trial that might have taken place<lb />
if Oswald, the alleged aaeaaatn of<lb />
President John F. Kennedy, had<lb />
lived to face prosecution, baaai<lb />
on known facts of the case<lb />
Freed first began working on<lb />
the project in 1965, but faces a<lb />
succession of delays and road-<lb />
blocks over the succeding 12<lb />
years. The time, according to<lb />
Freed, is now right.<lb />
"It's been 14 years sinoe the<lb />
assassination Freed comment-<lb />
ed. "After that many years, the<lb />
emotional shook for the public is<lb />
now over. Moreover, events like<lb />
Vietnam and Watergate have<lb />
stimulated the public's interest<lb />
According to Freed, the pro-<lb />
ject marks the first time the<lb />
American public will be able to<lb />
see a representation of Lee<lb />
Harvey Oswald as a person,<lb />
showing his relationship with his<lb />
family and associates.<lb />
The film is based entirely on<lb />
historical fact, containing inform-<lb />
ation which, until now, was either<lb />
unavailable to the general public<lb />
or fully examined. Scrutinized<lb />
closely are the case's conflicting<lb />
interpretations, information gaps,<lb />
sometimes mysterious evidence<lb />
and legal and moral dilemmas.<lb />
Freed's enthusiasm for the<lb />
project has not dimmed since he<lb />
started work on it in 1965, but he<lb />
acknowledged the rejections it<lb />
has enoountered.<lb />
"Four of the five major film<lb />
studios passed on 'The Trial of<lb />
Lee Harvey Oswald' when it was<lb />
first presented to them in 1966<lb />
he said. "I think they passed at<lb />
the time because the material was<lb />
highly sensitive and because it<lb />
was only three years since<lb />
Kennedy's death and the emot-<lb />
ional wounds were still quite raw.<lb />
I tried again with the project<lb />
in 1970, but the timing was still<lb />
not quite right. All three tele-<lb />
vision networks also turned it<lb />
down then. But I kept living with<lb />
the idea and am happy that it's<lb />
finally going to be seen by the<lb />
American public<lb />
Freed's enthusiasm is also<lb />
kindled by the uniqueness of the<lb />
film.<lb />
"First of all Freed stated,<lb />
"it presents fa the first time the<lb />
adversary point of view regarding<lb />
the events in Dallas. It's the first<lb />
time both sides of the case are<lb />
presented concurrently.<lb />
"The show gives the public<lb />
the chance to view Oswald as a<lb />
human being for the first time<lb />
they really haven't known much<lb />
about him.<lb />
"If nothing else, it will make<lb />
some people think a lot harder<lb />
about Kennedy's death. It might<lb />
even stimulate more interest in<lb />
the Congressional investigations.<lb />
"The American public was<lb />
obviously deprived of a Lee<lb />
Harvey Oswald trial by Jack<lb />
Ruby. The film gives them a<lb />
chance to experience it<lb />
Tracing Oswald's life in both<lb />
America and Russia, the movie<lb />
was filmed in the actual locations<lb />
where the events occured in<lb />
Dallas, Texas. These sites includ-<lb />
ed Oswald's apartment, the<lb />
theatre where he was arrested,<lb />
the Dallas Police Station where he<lb />
was incarcerated, interrogated<lb />
and finally killed, and the scene of<lb />
the actual presidential assassina-<lb />
tion-Dealy Plaza.<lb />
The trial setting takes place in<lb />
a small, unnamed town near<lb />
Dallas, which is chosen following<lb />
a change in venue. Freed and<lb />
others involved in the production<lb />

have been issued if the trial had<lb />
taken place.<lb />
"The Trial of Lee Harvey<lb />

Lane Greene as the prosecuting<lb />

John Pleshette as Lee Harvey<lb />

Continued from p. 7<lb />
"Crackin' Up" has a Jamaican f lava, thedirectiai that the band is<lb />
said to be taking. Everything is solid rhythm-wise, but the song can't<lb />
be survived. "Little Red Rooster" isa classic Willie Dixon 12-bar blues<lb />
tune. But the Stones' arrangement is somewhat too laid back.<lb />
"Around and Around a Chuck Berry tune, manages to rescue the<lb />
side. Both Richard and Wood are tutaed at Berry's guitar lines, and<lb />
evidently they know it as if it were their own. The tune rocks, just as<lb />
much as Glenn Miller could swing.<lb />
Side four oould be labeled the riot side Beginning with "It'sOnly<lb />
Rock n Roll the band has evidently warmed up and is building the<lb />
show into a climax. Jagger is out in front, with the two guitars, in all<lb />
brute face. "Brown Sugar" begins with the familiar intro, and<lb />
continues the fire that the band has managed to aeate.<lb />
"Jumping Jack Flash" lacks the face of the version on GET YER<lb />
YA-YASOUT but still justifies a need fa the Stones as long as rock<lb />
and roll carries on. The band has the aowd in the palm of their hands,<lb />
with Jagger the composer, and the guitars the music. Definitely a rook<lb />
and roll classic of the '60's.<lb />
Sympathy Fa the Devil is the encae. Sadly, the soig hurts f ran<lb />
a lack of a distinct guitar solo. It is clumsily done, except fa the<lb />
rhythm. After its years of repetition, possibly the group is unable to<lb />
psyche up to play it again, and again, and again. It should be discarded<lb />
faastroiger number, probably something fron their recent material.<lb />
LOVE YOU LIVE, like most live albums, has faults and<lb />
weaknesses. But LOVE YOU LIVE unlike some live albums, has some<lb />
classics, at least rock and roll classics. There was a need fa it. These<lb />
aging rock stars are undeniably still able to play some of the finest rock<lb />
and roll around. If ntf the best, the Rolling Stonesare indeed one of the<lb />
"Wald's Greatest Rook and Roll Bands Sure it's not Mozart, but<lb />
who cares. It's only rook and roll, and I like it.<lb />

The American bobcat<lb />
29 Septentxr 1977 FOUNTAINHEAD Pag 9<lb />
Fur industry threatens native cat survival<lb />
By MICHAEL HARRIS<lb />
Pacific News Service<lb />
For 35 million years, the<lb />
bobcat has roamed the marshes,<lb />
valleys and ridges of every state<lb />
in the continental U.S. While the<lb />
jaguar, ocelot and cougar have<lb />
vanished, the bobcat has survived<lb />
man's encroachment on its hunt-<lb />
ing territories, the decline of its<lb />
natural prey and 250 years of<lb />
bounty hunters.<lb />
Now, in a tragic irony, Ameri-<lb />
can concern for endangered spe-<lb />
cies elsewhere-and the fashion<lb />
whims of the American fur<lb />
industry-are threatening the sur-<lb />
vival of our last plentiful native<lb />
cat.<lb />
When Congress passec the<lb />
1969 Endangered Species Act to<lb />
prohibit the importation of furs<lb />
from tigers, cheetahs and leo-<lb />
pardshelping to save those<lb />
endangered Asian and African<lb />
cats-the domestic fur trade turn-<lb />
ed with a vengeance on the<lb />
bobcat. In the past two years,<lb />
bobcat pelt prices have soared,<lb />
sending the creature into a<lb />
population tailspin from which it<lb />
may never recover.<lb />
"When the price for an<lb />
animal's fur gets to $50, we start<lb />
to worry about that anirpal says<lb />
Henry Laramie, superintendent<lb />
of game management with New<lb />
Hampshire's Fish and Game<lb />
Department. "If the price gets to<lb />
$100, we really worry. And if the<lb />
price gets ever $100 a pelt, the<lb />
species may clearly be in dan-<lb />
ger<lb />
National fur exchanges are<lb />
now paying $400 fa prime bobcat<lb />
pelts.<lb />
By 1972-74, the bobcat popu-<lb />
lation was already in widespread<lb />
decline around the country-as<lb />
much as 89 percent in some<lb />
states-according to a study con-<lb />
ducted by the U.S. Fish and<lb />
Wildlife Service.<lb />
Where there were thousands<lb />
of bobcats in some areas just 10<lb />
years before, only dozens existed<lb />
by 1974. In some Midwestern<lb />
regions, the creature had disap-<lb />
peared entirely.<lb />
In mid-July the U.S. Interior<lb />
Department issued a notice of<lb />
review on the bobcat, a preli-<lb />
minary step toward .deciding<lb />
whether a not the cat should be<lb />
protected by placing it on the<lb />
threatened' species list.<lb />
According to a department<lb />
spokesman, the review will take<lb />
about four months, and a final<lb />
decision another three.<lb />
The department says it does<lb />
not know, and may not be able to<lb />
find out, exactly how many<lb />
bobcats are left in the oountry.<lb />
Some areas have shown very<lb />
substantial drops the spokes-<lb />
man says. "But no one has tried<lb />
to come up with definite informa-<lb />
tion<lb />
SUBJECT OF FOLKLORE<lb />
Anyone who has ever marvel-<lb />
ed at the stealth, gracefulness<lb />
and agility of an ordinary house-<lb />
cat can understand why the<lb />
bobcat has been the subject of<lb />
folklore and mystery since colo-<lb />
nial times.<lb />
Weighing from 15 to as much<lb />
as 40 pounds and often more than<lb />
three feet long, the bobcat moves<lb />
no less silently and much more<lb />
quickly than its domestic feline<lb />
cousin. The yellow-eyed, spotted<lb />
cat is a night hunter and seldom<lb />
seen by man. Even when disturb-<lb />
ed during the daylight it retreats<lb />
silently from its resting place,<lb />
often before the intruder ever<lb />
beoomes aware of its presence.<lb />
The backwoods hiker fortu-<lb />
nate enough to catch a glimpse of<lb />
a bobcat will find a tawny brown<lb />
creature whose ooat and white<lb />
underbelly are dappled with black<lb />
spots. Mature cats have tufts of<lb />
hair that protrude from behind<lb />
each ear, and they all have the<lb />
short, white-tipped tail for which<lb />
the animal is named.<lb />
The bobcat, technically known<lb />
as Lynx rufus, is also popularly<lb />
called the wildcat, a name that<lb />
stands in tribute to its character.<lb />
Normally a silent, solitary figure<lb />
that prefers to slink discreetly<lb />
away from danger, the wildcat<lb />
has also been portrayed as a<lb />
demon with unlimited oourage<lb />
when under attack. In fact, the<lb />
bobcat was known simply as<lb />
"lucifer" to early settlers.<lb />
When oornered by dogs or<lb />
man (the creature's only major<lb />
enemies), the wildcat screams a<lb />
blood-curdling cry, growls<lb />
viciously, spits, hisses and draws<lb />
back its lips ever flashing fangs,<lb />
all the while lashing out with<lb />
razor-sharp daws. The target is<lb />
usually the attacker's eyes and<lb />
throat.<lb />
Like all cats.the bobcat selects<lb />
the highest available ground to<lb />
make its last stand, forcing its<lb />
antagonist to fight a difficult,<lb />
uphill battle. It is an extraor-<lb />
dinary dog that can overpower a<lb />
wildcat singlehandedly, and an<lb />
unarmed human threatening a<lb />
young litter would be not match<lb />
fa the wrath of the kittens'<lb />
mother.<lb />
Like all wilderness .denizens,<lb />
however, the wildcat would rather<lb />
retreat than fight. This fact,<lb />
coupled with the cat's cautious<lb />
nature and nocturnal habits, has<lb />
enabled it to survive in agricul-<lb />
tural regions an even on the<lb />
fringes of urban areas as long as<lb />
any patches of woodland remain.<lb />
The bobcat fits neatly into the<lb />
predatay biological niche that<lb />
keeps the world from being<lb />
overrun by hares, procupinesand<lb />
many of the smalla rodents.<lb />
These prolific spedes are by far<lb />
the bobcat's most important<lb />
sources of food, and under namal<lb />
circumstances the bobcat popula-<lb />
tion of its prey.<lb />
When the intrusion of man's<lb />
adivities into the bobcat's hunt-<lb />
ing territay reaches extreme<lb />
proportion, the young cats learn<lb />
the most bitta lesson of all. If<lb />
the prey spades have been driven<lb />
away, the charactaistically in-<lb />
dependent and wary bobcat turns<lb />
to dvilization' s dumps and stock-<lb />
yards to sustain himself.<lb />
But the bobcat has one fatal<lb />
flaw. He is as curious as any<lb />
housecat, and can be trapped by<lb />
any 10 year old who is so indined<lb />
A rabbit skin dangling from a<lb />
piece of rope will move with the<lb />
slightest breeze, and a bobcat<lb />
cannot resist taking a swipe at it.<lb />
All it takes is a set of steel jaws<lb />
concealed below the skin to snap<lb />
shut the bobcat's freedom.<lb />
To a creature already faced<lb />
with development pressures<lb />
diminishing his range, unrestrid-<lb />
ed hunting and a long-term<lb />
dedine in the orttontail rabbit<lb />
population-his most important<lb />
food souroe-the stylish appeal of<lb />
his soft, white underbelly as a fur<lb />
oollar may be too musch fa the<lb />
species to withstand.<lb />
The bobcat has an important<lb />
role to play in the natural balance<lb />
of the spedes, but Nature's great<lb />
balance does not provide fa fur<lb />

USC- ultimate test<lb />
by JOHN EVANS<lb />
Volleyball begins<lb />
Men'sand women's volleyball play began this week and the sign up<lb />
for these activities was just great! A record number of teams will<lb />
participate in both men'sand women'splay. 51 men's teams signed up<lb />
and 39 teams signed up in the women's division.<lb />
Because of the volleyball matches there will no longer be free play<lb />
for basketball buffs in Minges Cotiseun but the hours for use of<lb />
Memorial Gym will remain the same.<lb />
In case you didn't catch it in the newsletter, golf intramurals have<lb />
been rescheduled for spring quarter because Ayden Golf Course,<lb />
where the tournament is held, is reseeding their greens and wants to<lb />
keep as many people as possible off the greens. Volleyball will be<lb />
played from 8:15 to 1030 this week and until 11.15 next week.<lb />
The favorites in the women's tennis singles are still handing in<lb />
there, but one of the top-seeded players in the men's singles has<lb />
already hit the dust in a surprise two-set loss.<lb />
Top-seeded Janice McVeigh was still around going into her<lb />
quarterfinal match last night with Gayle Allen and the second seed,<lb />
Janet Hoeppel, had a quarterfinal matchup with Cynthia Crowell<lb />
scheduled for last night. The other three top seeds; Stevie Chepko,<lb />
Lora Dionis and Mary Sawyer, were also playing semifinal matches<lb />
yesterday. In all, six of the top eight seeded women made the<lb />
quarterfinals.<lb />
In men's play, Thomas Cunningham surprised Rick Bright in<lb />
straight sets 6-2, 6-1 toadvanoe into the quarterfinals and push his name<lb />
up into the rank of those dark-horses to beat for the men's title. Bright<lb />
had been ranked as one of the favorites in the men's singles.<lb />
Bright and his teammate Scott Wade are still alive in the men's<lb />
double play and so is Cunningham, and his doubles partner, Bill<lb />
McGee, after they took a pair of 7-5 sets for a win in the doubles<lb />
third-round over Paul Martin and Rick Bennett.<lb />
The women's flag football leaders really took a jostle this past week<lb />
as the Cotten Bunnies came up with a pair of stunning upsets to vault<lb />
into the top spot among the women. Last week the Bunnies knocked off<lb />
the Day Demons, 28-6, to set up a confrontation with the pre-season<lb />
favorites from Tyler Dam, the Tylermites. That game was played on<lb />
Tuesday and the Cotton Bunnies proved too strong fa the Tylermites<lb />
as they took a 22-14 win. Inboth games, Lillian Barnes led the Bunnies,<lb />
scaing a total of 42 of her teams 50 points in the upset wins.<lb />
The Greene Steam also pulled off a big upset with a 12-6 win over<lb />
Hypertension. The Steam and the Bunnies have thusly established<lb />
themselves as the teams to beat in the Dam league, while Sigma<lb />
Sigma Sigmaand Alpha Omicrai Pi are the dass of the saaity teams<lb />
so far.<lb />
In men's play there is a lot of competition and a lot of close races are<lb />
beginning to develop. In the fraternity division the Kappa Alpha team<lb />
is beginning to make believers out of all their Greek opposition as they<lb />
have rolled to a 5-0 reoord, including wins over Tau Kappa Epsilon and<lb />
Pi Kappa Phi. The Kappa Alphas hoi da slim edge over the Tykes, but<lb />
still have a big game scheduled with the unbeaten Kappa Sigma team<lb />
befae they can daim a toehold on the top fraternity spa.<lb />
The biggest log jam is in the independent, rankings, as three teams<lb />
head the field with 6-1 recads and a fourth stands at 4-1 due to a fafeit<lb />
loss. The Bogue A Dykes have na lost a game except fa a fafeit and<lb />
have defeated two of their top challengers in the Albanians and the<lb />
Time Ins, who both own 6-1 recads. Meanwhile the Albanians knocked<lb />
off the Time Ins, to drop the squad to 6-1 and a tie fa the lead.<lb />
Anything can still happen in that race. The Sadaharu Ohs also stand at<lb />
6-1.<lb />
In the dub division it boils down to a battle between the two Rugby<lb />
dub teams, the Leathernuts and the Ruggers, who both own 5-0<lb />
recads. The teams will meet on Thursday night in what pronises to be<lb />
a real do-a-die grudge match.<lb />
The damitay division isn't without its strong arms. Leading the<lb />
divisions with perfect marks are the Beltics meet division foe Lost<lb />
Gonzo Thursday afternoon, so one of those teams will drop from<lb />
the ranks of the unbeaten.<lb />
Although there isn't a whole la happening in the oo-rec Softball<lb />
league, an unusual play did occur last week when the Time Ins' Jackie<lb />
Brooks socked a roundtripper against the Blanks in a 17-8 win. Adually<lb />
Brooks had a little bit of help on her homer. She belted the ball a grand<lb />
taal of 15 inches, but four erras enabled her to race around the bases<lb />
and help her team to viday. Two aher home runs were socked last<lb />
week, by Dan McCombs and Mike Tanner.<lb />

Assistant Spats Edita<lb />
When Steve Hale arrived at<lb />
East Carolina almost four years<lb />
ago he came in as one of the most<lb />
reauited players in tle. South.<lb />
While he quarterbacked at<lb />
Columbus, Geagia, Hale was a<lb />
do-it-all type of quarterback. He<lb />
won the Golden Helmet Award,<lb />
Most Valuable Back and Most<lb />
Valuable Offensive Player at<lb />
Columbus High. During his car-<lb />
eer as a prep he had fourteen<lb />
touchdowns to his aedit. When<lb />
he was a senior, Hale was<lb />
reauited by a number of South-<lb />
eastern Conference schools but<lb />
choose to come to East Carolina.<lb />
Befae Hale was even able<lb />
to take a snap from center at East<lb />
Cardina he was injured. The<lb />
injury was to his thumb and after<lb />
surgery he was no linger able to<lb />
grip the football enough to be a<lb />
quarterback. Steve's years as a<lb />
quarterback were over.<lb />
Instead of calling it quits,<lb />
however, Hale dedded to stick to<lb />
it and was oonverted to oaner-<lb />
back and safety The oily pro<lb />
lem was the fact that the<lb />
secondary was full of experience<lb />
at the time, with players like Jim<lb />
Bdding and Reggie Pinkney, so<lb />
Hale was used in a reserve role<lb />
fa three years. While doing so<lb />
Steve turned in solid perfam-<lb />
ances as backup and on spedalty<lb />
teams. Hale was now beginning<lb />
to develop into a top nach free<lb />
safety. When he had a chance to<lb />
get in on the adion, Hale was<lb />
known as a real hitter on tackles,<lb />
a player that would really stick to<lb />
it.<lb />
In the spring of 1977 Steve<lb />
had his chanoe and was outstand-<lb />
ing. With a fight brewing fa the<lb />
starting positiai left vacant by<lb />
Jim Bdding, Hale made most of<lb />
it. In two spring games he picked<lb />
off three interoeptions and in<lb />
general turned on a strong<lb />
perfamance.<lb />
This fall thus far Steve has<lb />
picked up where he left off in the<lb />
spring. He has played four out-<lb />
standing games against some<lb />
very tough opposition. So far this<lb />
year Hale has been rated a<lb />
"winner" during every game by<lb />
the coaching staff fa his sdid<lb />
perfamances, which is na an<lb />
easy task under the Pat Dye<lb />
rating system. During the game<lb />
with the University of Toledo,<lb />
Steve intercepted a pass to halt a<lb />

has provided the senia leader-<lb />

a 20-yard run to give them a 4-0<lb />
lead, the conversion kick being no<lb />
good.<lb />
ECU had a chance to score<lb />
three points before the half ended<lb />
but Scott Taylor's penalty kick<lb />
was wide to the right. At haJftime<lb />
the score remained Dan River 4 -<lb />

Soccer team on<lb />
road this weekend<lb />
By ANNE HOGGE<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
ECU'S soccer team will be<lb />
busy this weekend with a full<lb />
slate of games scheduled. The<lb />
Pirates travel to Guilford Friday,<lb />
will visit Appalachian Sunday and<lb />
return home to meet Duke<lb />
Tuesday.<lb />
Guilford has already defeated<lb />
the Pirates once this year (4-1 in<lb />
the Campbell Classic), but coach<lb />
Brad Smith has made some<lb />
changes in hopes that it won't<lb />
happen again. "We've made<lb />
some changes in the line-up since<lb />
we last met Guilford said<lb />
Smith. "We've made some<lb />
necessary corrections and I think<lb />
we can win The athletic<lb />
department must also think ECU<lb />
can win because the game has<lb />
recently been added to the<lb />
schedule, after the season sche-<lb />
dule was already made up.<lb />
Appalachian will also be a<lb />
tough competitor. Thsy are cur-<lb />
rently ranked second in the<lb />
southern division, behind Clem-<lb />
son. Appalachian plays the for-<lb />
eign brand of soccer and has an<lb />
astro-turf field, which will be new<lb />
to many of the Pirates. The<lb />
combination should prove fa a<lb />
tough fought match, one where<lb />
good ball control will be neces-<lb />
sary.<lb />
ECU should be traveling with<lb />
a full squad as those injured (Tom<lb />
Long, Charlie Hardy and Jay<lb />
High) should be ready for action.<lb />
"If they will be ready to play, it<lb />
will be all because of the Sports<lb />
Medicine program said Coach<lb />
Smith. "They have done an<lb />
excellent job and should be<lb />
commended<lb />

32 passes fa 177 yards.<lb />
That could mean real trouble<lb />
fa the Pirate secondary which<lb />
has given up 704 yards through<lb />
the air in four games fa an<lb />
average of 176 yards per game.<lb />
Flanker Zion McKinney and<lb />
split end Philip Logan are Bass'<lb />
favaite targets. McKinney has<lb />
caught 13 passes fa 172 yards<lb />
this year while Logan has 12<lb />
receptions fa 240 yards.<lb />
Although the Gamcocks were<lb />
held to just 98 yards rushing<lb />
against Geagia last week, half-<lb />
back Spencer Clark, George<lb />
Rogers, and Steve Dasey are all<lb />
capable running backs. Tailback<lb />
Casper Carter is another danger-<lb />
ous threat in the baokfield.<lb />
Ron Bass is one of the finest<lb />
quarterbacks around observed<lb />
Dye. "I would oompare him with<lb />
John Evans at N.C. State. They<lb />
also have four outstanding run-<lb />
ning backs with very little differ-<lb />
ence between them. Philip Logan<lb />
and Zion McKinney are both<lb />
great receivers<lb />

ECU'S Bob Davis oovered his own<lb />
pop kick in the end zone to the<lb />
game at 4-4, the conversion kick<lb />
being no good.<lb />
The momentum of the match<lb />
then shifted to ECU. At.this point<lb />
the scrum, which had been<lb />
waking poaly, got the ball out to<lb />
the wing. Some fine runs were<lb />
made by Matt Delbridge, Roby<lb />
Robertson and Alan Poindexter<lb />
who kept the ball at Dan River's<lb />
goal line.<lb />
With eight minuses left,<lb />
ECU'S Davis recovered a loose<lb />
ball five yards from Dan River's<lb />
goal line and pitched to prop John<lb />
Drew, who was unable to scae.<lb />
The caiversiai kick by Scott<lb />
Tayla was good and ECU led<lb />
10-4. ECU'S defense stiffened<lb />
and kept Dan River from scaing,<lb />
preserving a 10-4 victay.<lb />
In a hard fought B-side<lb />
match. ECU lost to Dan River 8-0.<lb />
In the first half both teams<lb />
missed scaing oppatunites and<lb />
the scae remained 0-0 at half-<lb />
time.<lb />
The second half started much<lb />
the same way, but after ten<lb />
minutes Dan River scaed on a<lb />
25-yard run by Peter Johnson.<lb />
The conversioi kick was blocked<lb />
by ECU'S Davis and Dan River<lb />
led 4-0.<lb />

ECU coach Mike Gouldner<lb />
