Questions are now being raised<lb />
as to whether or not a group call-<lb />
ed CAUSA USA, which has been<lb />
circulating petitions on campuses<lb />
across the nation in the last few<lb />
weeks, is really a front for the<lb />
Unification Church and the Rev.<lb />
Sun Myung Moon.<lb />
According to Ronald Speier,<lb />
dean of Student Services,<lb />
CAUSA was on the ECU campus<lb />
last month. The group was spon-<lb />
sored by the Methodist Center.<lb />
"A Chinese-looking guy kept<lb />
bothering me whenever I was<lb />
around Mendenhall. Finally, I<lb />
stopped and signed his sheet<lb />
said ECU student Shannon<lb />
Short. "The sheet asked for mv<lb />
rame, address and phone<lb />
number<lb />
She added, "He said his group<lb />
was representing students against<lb />
communism<lb />
CAUSA The Confederation<lb />
of the Associations for the Unitv<lb />
of the Societies of the Americans<lb />
claim that their petitions are<lb />
asking for signers who support<lb />
the idea that there should be a<lb />
God-centered morality in the US,<lb />
that all people should be free and<lb />
that communism is dangerous.<lb />
Since September, petitions<lb />
have shown up in Utah, Ohio,<lb />
New Jersey, Alabama, Nebraska,<lb />
Minnesota, New York and North<lb />
Carolina.<lb />
Students at the above schools<lb />
have been complaining because<lb />
CAUSA members have belately<lb />
informed them they're followers<lb />
of Rev. Moon, while others claim<lb />
the group is just gathering names<lb />
of students to recruit for the<lb />
Unification Church.<lb />
Joy Garrett, CAUSA publicist,<lb />
told the College Press Service<lb />
that while some members might<lb />
belong to the Unification<lb />
Church, CAUSA itself was not<lb />
affiliated with the church<lb />
The Unification Church is a<lb />
nonprofit organization that<lb />
preaches that the Rev. Moon is<lb />
the sole true god who will reign<lb />
on earth after the apocalypse.<lb />
Ronald Hilton, professor<lb />
emeritus at Sanford and editor ol<lb />
World Affairs Report, contends<lb />
CAUSA is a Moon organization<lb />
"Moon has a very complex<lb />
network of organizations<lb />
Hilton said. "Within the network<lb />
of Moon organizations, there is<lb />
one called CAUSA International.<lb />
ai<lb />

more numerous than the<lb />
academic world suspects<lb />
According to Joseph Sanchez<lb />
president of CAUSA, his group<lb />
has obtained over seven milh i<lb />
signatures on campuses thi-<lb />
semester.<lb />
Sanchez said the group has not<lb />
decided what to do with the<lb />
signatures, but that they would<lb />
probably be used to let leaders<lb />
and politicians know how the<lb />
signees feel.<lb />
Garrett said the signees will get<lb />
more information about the<lb />
organization, including a sample<lb />
copy of CAUSA's newletter.<lb />

Campuses Face Problem Of Fake ID's<lb />
the event ol recent weeks<lb />
are any measure, the laus that<lb />
have pushed up the minimum<lb />
'egal drinking age to 21 in many<lb />
states have resuscitated an old<lb />
campus art form: manufacturing<lb />
fake identification cards.<lb />
Although there were 21 ECT<lb />
students charged with having<lb />
conterfeit IDs. ECV is not the<lb />
only university having problems<lb />
'ith the fake ID's.<lb />
At Marshall University in Hun-<lb />
tington. W Va . a student<lb />
newspaper stud found students<lb />
saying it was still easv to buy li-<lb />
quor, regardless of their age. The<lb />
most common method was using<lb />
falsified drner's licenses or col-<lb />
lege IDs.<lb />
"False IDs are a lot more<lb />
widespread now because students<lb />
who have been allowed to drink<lb />
for the past two years now can't<lb />
do it says Parthenon editor<lb />
Burgetta Fplin.<lb />
"And tew students have<lb />
qualms about breaking the law<lb />
because few of them agree with<lb />
it<lb />
West Virginia, like' all the<lb />
states in the union, was forced to<lb />
raise its minimum drinking age<lb />
from 19 to 21 by a federal law<lb />
which says states that don't com-<lb />
P'v will lose millions in federal<lb />
highway funds.<lb />
The first wave of new state law<lb />
went into effect in 1984. West<lb />
Virginia's became ettective in Ju-<lb />
ly, 1986.<lb />
As of August, only eight states<lb />
and the District of Columbia had<lb />
refused to raise their legal drink-<lb />
ing ages.<lb />
North Carolina raised the age<lb />
Oct. I. The penalty, if caught<lb />
drinking underage, is only a $25<lb />
infraction. An infraction does<lb />
not go on record.<lb />
In the rest of the union, col-<lb />
leges have had to make up ways<lb />
to force students - many of<lb />
whom, of course, are younger<lb />
than age 21 to change their<lb />
drinking habits Some have bann<lb />
ed drinking altogether. Others<lb />
have made fraternities and<lb />
sororities hold dry rushes, among<lb />
other measures.<lb />
But some students aren't giving<lb />
up their bottles so easily.<lb />
Marshall's Eplin says one<lb />
underaged student questioned in<lb />
the Parthenon survey convinced<lb />
an older friend to report his<lb />
driver's license missing Ihe<lb />
friend filled out the necessar,<lb />

Elections Show Colleges Want Funding<lb />
(C PS) V r,r. O<lb />
(C PS) - Voters in states where<lb />
colleges issues were on the ballot<lb />
generally approved higher fun-<lb />
ding for their campuses.<lb />
November's election results<lb />
show.<lb />
Nevada. New Mexico. Maine.<lb />
North Carolina, and Rhode<lb />
Island voters all approved in-<lb />
itiatives and referenda that will<lb />
raise money for colleges.<lb />
Higher education observers say<lb />
some ballot measures votes in<lb />
Massachusetts. California. Mon-<lb />
tana and Oregon mav translate<lb />
into lower funding for campuses<lb />
there, however.<lb />
In many cases, the ballot<lb />
measures were a little obscure.<lb />
and their relationship to state col-<lb />
lege budgets hard to understand.<lb />
Nevada used to be the only<lb />
state to refuse to take its rightful<lb />
share of the estate taxes that the<lb />
federal government collects, and<lb />
then redistributes to the states.<lb />
But in approving Question 5,<lb />
voters said they want the $6<lb />
million to $9 million due them<lb />
each year the amount "depends<lb />
on who dies says Eugene<lb />
Paslov. state superintendent of<lb />
education - to go to the schools.<lb />
The proposal appeared on the<lb />
ballot two years ago, but "people<lb />
were not aware of it and didn't<lb />
know what is was about ex-<lb />
plains Karen Zupon, press<lb />
secretary for Nevada Gov. Dick<lb />
Bryan. "This year, the politi-<lb />
cians endorsed it, and it made a<lb />
difference<lb />
New Mexico voters approved a<lb />
$35 million bond issue to finance<lb />
construction projects for public<lb />
schools, state colleges and univer-<lb />
sities.<lb />
"We're very lucky the bond<lb />
issues have been passing says<lb />
New Mexico State University<lb />
spokesman Eddie Groth. "It's<lb />
important to us because we need<lb />
classroom space<lb />
Groth says the university had a<lb />
six percent enrollment increase<lb />
this fall, with especially heavy<lb />
growth in its engineering depart-<lb />
ment.<lb />
"Much of our $4.6 million<lb />
share will go to additions to that<lb />
department and to remodel ex-<lb />
isting facilities he notes. "All<lb />
15 state campuses have some pro-<lb />
ject approved through this bond<lb />
issue<lb />
Among the other higher educa-<lb />
tion isues on ballots in other<lb />
states:<lb />
 A Maine bond issue lets the<lb />
university system raise $7.7<lb />
million for library automation,<lb />
computers, facility improvements<lb />
and expansion.<lb />
A North Carolina constitu-<lb />
tional amendment will let state<lb />
agencies issue revenue bonds to<lb />
finance building for state col-<lb />
leges. The state will not<lb />
guarantee the bonds.<lb />
 The University of Rhode<lb />
Island won approval for its $8.7<lb />
million bond issue to build an<lb />
Oceanographic and Atmospheris<lb />
Laboratory and field house.<lb />
 Despite opposition by state<lb />
education officials, Montana<lb />
voters approved a measure to<lb />
freeze agricultural, commercial<lb />
and residential property taxes at<lb />
1986 levels unless the legislature<lb />
cuts will freeze and secures alter-<lb />
native funding. Opponents fear<lb />
the initiative will freeze state<lb />
teachers salaries, and prevent<lb />
future education bond issues.<lb />
 Oregon voters rejected two<lb />
opposing tax amendments. One<lb />
would have increased eduction<lb />
funding through a five percent<lb />
sales tax. The other would have<lb />
capped property taxes, and re-<lb />
quired voter approval for future<lb />
Thanksgiving Tips n<lb />
e heard that food noisonino I<lb />
increases.<lb />
In Massachusetts, voters ap-<lb />
proved Question 3, which pro-<lb />
hibits the legislature from raising<lb />
taxes any faster than the rise in<lb />
aggregate statewide wages and<lb />
salaries. Education officials fear<lb />
the measure - which passed by a<lb />
narrow margin - means skimpy<lb />
funding for higher education.<lb />
 Colorado's Amendment 4 -<lb />
which would have prohibited<lb />
state or local tax increases<lb />
without voter approval in a<lb />
general election met defeat.<lb />
Officials at colleges, which get<lb />
part of the money raised through<lb />
yearly tax adjustments, feared<lb />
the measure would force them to<lb />
defer spending endlessly until<lb />
voters could decide to pass new<lb />
tax adjustment.<lb />
 In California, voters ap-<lb />
proved a $400 million bond issue<lb />
for new campus buildings, but re-<lb />
jected proposals to raise<lb />
educator's salaries and to let col-<lb />
lege raise taxes without a vote.<lb />
California legislators opposed the<lb />
bond issu saying state college<lb />
enrollment has been dropping<lb />
since 1974 while education fun-<lb />
ding has been increasing.<lb />

I've heard that food poisoning<lb />
can occur around the holidays. I<lb />
thought it only happened in the<lb />
summer. Why is that?<lb />
Most holiday food poisoning<lb />
cases occur as the result of im-<lb />
proper thawing or storage of the<lb />
turke) Whether you are cooking<lb />
your own turkey or chicken or<lb />
ing with friends or relatives,<lb />
remember the following points:<lb />
Always thaw the turkey as<lb />
directed on the packages which<lb />
generally states thawing it in the<lb />
refrigerator or for a short time in<lb />
cold w ater.<lb />
If the turkey contains stuffing<lb />
(dressing), remove it immediately<lb />
after dinner. The stuffing can<lb />
promote the growth of bacteria if<lb />
in the turkey because the<lb />
turkev cavity keeps the stuffing<lb />
anm and moist.<lb />
THE HEALTH<lb />
COLUMN<lb />
By<lb />
Mary hlesfia-Adams<lb />
Refrigerate the turkev im-<lb />
mediately after eating. Don't<lb />
leave sitting on the counter.<lb />
Symptoms of food poisoning in-<lb />
clude:<lb />
1. Diarrhea with 8-48 hours<lb />
after ingesting organism<lb />
2. Fever<lb />
3. Nausea<lb />
4. Vomiting<lb />
5. Headaches<lb />
If you should develop these<lb />
symptoms, you should try to<lb />
drink as many liquids as possible<lb />
to prevent dehydration and eat<lb />
only foods that are bland. The<lb />
symptoms may indicate other il-<lb />
lness as well; if they do not clear<lb />
up within 24-48 hours, you<lb />
should consult your health care<lb />
provider for treatment.<lb />

The Pirate Club<lb />
Are They Out Of Bounds?<lb />
A recent article in the Raleigh<lb />
ens and Observer said that the<lb />
ECU Pirate Club has voted to place<lb />
a resolution that calls for the<lb />
resignation of ECU Athletic Direc-<lb />
tor Ken Karr on the agenda for its<lb />
January meeting.<lb />
The resolution cited dissatisfac-<lb />
tion with the leadership in the<lb />
athletic department. Among the<lb />
criticisms were: a lack of improve-<lb />
ment in facilities, a lack of progress<lb />
n the basketball program and<lb />
unrealistic football scheduling that<lb />
las brought about losing records in<lb />
iach of the past three seasons.<lb />
Admittedly, Karr is not the most<lb />
personable of people and will never<lb />
be compared to N.C. State's AD<lb />
Jim Valvano and his one liners.<lb />
However, we feel the disenchanted<lb />
members of the Pirate Club are off<lb />
base in attempting to get Karr to<lb />
eMgn.<lb />
First of all. a number of im-<lb />
provements hae been made to the<lb />
facilities while Karr has been in of-<lb />
fice. Among the improvements are<lb />
the renovation of Bunting Track,<lb />
'he air conditioning of Scott Dorm,<lb />
:he resurfacing of the playing floor<lb />
n Minges Coliseum and the enlarg-<lb />
g of the ticket office in Minges.<lb />
V hen these improvements are add-<lb />
ed to the planned expansion of<lb />
-icklen Stadium, it is clear that<lb />
Karr has not neglected the athletic<lb />
facilities during his tenure.<lb />
s for the criticism of the men's<lb />
asketball program, no one can<lb />
.cue that the Pirates have not won<lb />
as many games in the past three<lb />
,ars as Karr. Coach Harrison or<lb />
rate fans would have liked.<lb />
 wever, this year's team looks to<lb />
e the strongest at the school in<lb />
me time, and Karr should be<lb />
en credit for having the patience<lb />
vail for Charlie Harrison to put<lb />
the program on a solid foundation.<lb />
While Karr cannot be blamed for<lb />
Campus Forum<lb />
neglecting the facilities or the past<lb />
problems with the basketball pro-<lb />
gram, it is obvious that the football<lb />
schedule has been too difficult.<lb />
ECU's scheduling of schools such<lb />
as Miami (Fla), Penn State and,<lb />
Auburn was done to get the athletic<lb />
department out of debt, as the<lb />
Pirates make more money playing<lb />
these teams on the road then they<lb />
would playing a team of lesser<lb />
caliber in Ficklen Stadium.<lb />
With the financial objectives ac-<lb />
complished, the future schedules<lb />
look more realistic with series<lb />
scheduled against Cincinnati, South<lb />
Carolina, Virginia Tech and West<lb />
Virginia. An occasional game with<lb />
an Auburn or Penn State is good<lb />
for national exposure, but to play<lb />
them on back to back weekends (as<lb />
was the case this year), is suicide.<lb />
While Karr may not have been<lb />
perfect in carrying out his duties,<lb />
his performance on the job is not as<lb />
distressing as the attitude of some<lb />
Pirate Club members. The Athletic<lb />
Director as well as the running of<lb />
the Athletic Department is under<lb />
the control and auspices of the<lb />
university. While the Pirate Club<lb />
has proven invaluable in providing<lb />
financial support for ECU<lb />
athletics, this does not give them<lb />
the right to try and make personnel<lb />
decisions.<lb />
If the Pirate Club is successful in<lb />
getting Karr ousted, it would set a<lb />
dangerous precedent. Schools such<lb />
as Clemson and SMU have alreadv<lb />
run into a great deal of trouble with<lb />
their booster clubs getting too<lb />
powerful. In fact, at Clemson thev<lb />
actually caused the Chancellor to<lb />
resign. We feel that any decision<lb />
concerning Karr or any other per-<lb />
son employed by East Carolina<lb />
University should come from the<lb />
University Administration, not the<lb />
Pirate Club.<lb />

Are You Conservative Or Liberal?<lb />
What are you, politically that is? Do<lb />
you know the difference between the<lb />
right and the left? If someone was to<lb />
call you a lazy liberal pacifist or a right<lb />
wing conservative would you know<lb />
what they meant0<lb />
There are many ideological divisions<lb />
in the political spectrum of this eountrv<lb />
and most everyone is. in some degree,<lb />
on one side or the other. On the left we<lb />
have the Liberals and on the right we<lb />
have the Conservatives, where do vou<lb />
stand?<lb />
From The flight<lb />
By THK COALITION<lb />
Do you believe in promoting<lb />
economic growth and the market<lb />
economy? If so, you are more a Con-<lb />
servative than a Liberal, on this issue.<lb />
Liberals favor a large government and<lb />
strict market rules.<lb />
When it comes to moral values, it can<lb />
be argued that Conservatives exalt<lb />
traditional family values more so than<lb />
liberals. Proponents of homosexuality<lb />
find compassion with-in the Liberal<lb />
camp but surely not the Conservative<lb />
camp.<lb />
One of the biggest distinguishing fac-<lb />
tors between who's right and who's left<lb />
lies within the nation's foreign and<lb />
defense policies. What should be done<lb />
about the Soviets and the cancerous<lb />
growth of communism in the world?<lb />
While most everyone in the United<lb />
States hopes and prays that the Soviet<lb />
Union, with their oppressive communist<lb />
ways, will disappear or cease to exist, it<lb />
is the Conservatives who are more apt<lb />
to take a realistic approach toward a<lb />
communist-free world.<lb />
Perhaps it is an unattainable goal,<lb />
that of a communist-free world, but the<lb />
Conservatives will try to deter the<lb />
spreading of communism, as in<lb />
Nicaragua.<lb />
Defense is a social responsibility, not<lb />
just a cost. Protecting the freedom and<lb />
the rights of the citizens is a respon-<lb />
sibility of the government spelled out in<lb />
our Constitution. Protection shall not<lb />
be cost-free but it cannot be truly realiz-<lb />
ed without a strong deterring defense.<lb />
A Liberal likes a big central govern-<lb />
ment and the benefits there of, as long<lb />
as nothing hinders the social programs<lb />
of the welfare state. On the other hand.<lb />
Conservatives beleive in a streamlined<lb />
government payed for, not through<lb />
higher taxes, but through an efficient<lb />
allocation of needed revenue.<lb />
Liberals would let you believe that<lb />
Conservatives have no heart when it<lb />
comes to the system of welfare.<lb />
However, Conservatives believe govern-<lb />
ment has an obligation to help the elder-<lb />
ly, indigent and impoverished people<lb />
and not to let able bodied men and<lb />
women deprive those who are trulv<lb />
needy. Remember, give a man a fish; he<lb />
eats for a day. Make a man understand<lb />
that he must work and pay the ap-<lb />
propriate tax; he feeds his family, and<lb />
the nation shall prosper.<lb />

I appeal to these students who have no<lb />

Sue Havnie, for the past two years, has<lb />
seen working to get good quality speakers<lb />
grams to come to our campus.<lb />
ul time student, but she can still<lb />
find the time. Look at the members of<lb />
Students for Economic Democracy, Cen-<lb />
tral America Peace Project, Bread for the<lb />
World, and God forbid, the Young<lb />
Republicans I can't believe that every one<lb />
of these students doesn't have anything<lb />
else to do but go to school and organize<lb />
activities.<lb />
I attend school full-time, teach at night,<lb />
volunteer at other programs and make it a<lb />
point to attend programs on campus.<lb />
Sure, I don't make every program, but I<lb />
try to keep myself enlightened on other<lb />
issues going on in the world instead of on-<lb />
ly issues that directly affect me as a stu-<lb />
dent.<lb />
This kind of apathy doesn't only exist<lb />
on this campus. ie spoken with<lb />
organizers from many other campuses<lb />
that express disappointment when they try<lb />
to get a speaker or program on their cam-<lb />
pus. Students just aren't interested<lb />
enough in world affairs or even a sub-<lb />
ject like rape to make the time to at-<lb />
tend these programs.<lb />
We can't hide our heads in the sands of<lb />
ECU. We can't figure everything is going<lb />
to be okay because we'll have a job when<lb />
we graduate, maybe!<lb />
The issues that are being addressed on<lb />
this campus directly affect us now and<lb />
will continue to affect us in the future.<lb />
Students need to get informed about<lb />
what's going on, care about how our<lb />
politics, as a nation, is having an effect on<lb />
the rest of the world, and show some con-<lb />
cern. You can't hide from these issues.<lb />
Any university's first goal should be to<lb />
teach students how to think for<lb />
themselves. Students can't think for<lb />
themselves if they won't take the time to<lb />
get informed.<lb />
I'm sorry Barbara, but telling me that<lb />
you're too busy isn't a good excuse. As a<lb />

President Reagan is facing his greatest credibility crisis yet.<lb />
Before the 1980 election, he cast aspersions on Jimmy Carter<lb />
for negotiating with terrorists and bargaining for hostages.<lb />
For six years, he and his minions have declared they would<lb />
never do the same, and they have browbeaten allies for<lb />
allegedly lacking the courage to follow Reagan's example.<lb />
The administration proclaimed neutrality in the Iran-Iraq<lb />
war promoted an arms embargo to both sides and urged other<lb />
nations to join. Now it appears that all this has been a sham.<lb />
For the last 18 months, the administration seems to have been<lb />
securing arms for Iran reportedly $60 million worth, most<lb />
shipped through Isreal in hopes of winning the release of<lb />
U.S. hostages in Lebanon. The administration says this isn't<lb />
so, but it had better prove it.<lb />
The motive was humane: to save lives. Yet President<lb />
Reagan has derived political advantage by pretending to have<lb />
a special ability to withstand public pressure and coolly serve<lb />
the national interst in the face of terrorists and hostage-<lb />
holders. It appears this has been just an act.<lb />
If that's so, it undercuts his reputation both for strength<lb />
and for telling the truth. His enemies think he has always<lb />
dealt in rosy fictions, if not outright falsehoods. The<lb />
Democrats, sensing the chance to unmask their nemesis at<lb />
last, are planning any number of hearings and investigations.<lb />
The press, sensing that Reagan's damned Teflon is finally<lb />
scratched, is boring in.<lb />
Democrats and the press were after Lt. Col. Oliver North<lb />
of the National Security Council as the agent used for skirting<lb />
congressional restrictions on aid to the Nicaraguan contras.<lb />
Now they can go after him for helping funnel arms to Iran.<lb />
The NSC is also vulnerable, legitimately, for the botched ef-<lb />
fort at "disinformation" directed at Libya's Col. Gadhafi.<lb />
There is a serious and potentially dangerous tendency at<lb />
work here. It looks as though the NSC staff has caught a<lb />
whiff of the "executive action" disease that afflicted several<lb />
White Houses in the pre-Watergate era. Whenever it was<lb />
politically risky or just inconvenient to trust Congress, the<lb />
State Department or even the CIA, they resorted to covert<lb />
derring-do. Sometimes such activity is merited. Persisted in, it<lb />
inevitably leads to big trouble.<lb />
There is a pattern of incompetence to Reagan's recent<lb />
foreign policy behavior. After the Iceland summit, the ad-<lb />
ministration could not get its story straight. The "disinforma-<lb />
tion" flap made the administration look foolish. And,<lb />
merited or not, there is suspicion that the White House has<lb />
played politics. The offer to sell subsidized grain to the<lb />
Soviets certainly was an effort to save some Midwest Senate<lb />
seats. Will Democrats probe to see whether former national<lb />
security adviser Robert McFarlane was sent to Tehran in<lb />
September to produce a pre-election "October surprise<lb />
Will they ever.<lb />
Finally, if it develops that Reagan has been trading for<lb />
hostages after saying for so long that he wouldn't, his word<lb />
will never be fully relied upon again. His ability to lead will<lb />
have been hurt.<lb />
Top White House officials claim to understand the danger,<lb />
but they have not yet found an effective wav to deal with ii<lb />
White House chief of staff Donald Regan says that historv<lb />
will show that the administration has done the right thing,<lb />
and meanwhile everyone should please shut up because<lb />
hostages' lives are involved.<lb />
At the moment, officials are offering up mitigation, not<lb />
proof of innocence. They say, first, that whatever weapons<lb />
the United States might have allowed to get to Iran could noi<lb />
possibly tip the balance in the Gulf war.<lb />
Second, the administration says, the United States made-<lb />
contacts with Iran primarily for strategic reasons. It's impor<lb />
tant for Iran to remain an independent buffer between the<lb />
Soviet Union and the Gulf, and elements inside Iran's ruling<lb />
hierarchy want to reduce their country's isolation. This group<lb />
is believed to be led by Akbar Rafsanjani, speaker of Iran's<lb />
Parliament who's at odds with Khomeini's chosen successor<lb />
Hussein Ah Montazeri.<lb />
Opponents of the NSC gun-running policy sav the United<lb />
States had to know that its activities would come to light and<lb />
embarrass the very faction the United States was trving to<lb />
WOu S uC HUSe officials acknowledge that the publ.c.tv<lb />
probably has embarrassed Rafsanjani, but thev are pleased to<lb />
note that he is still saying he would welcome better relations<lb />
with the United States if it would just change policy.<lb />
A third line of defense is that Iranian-inspired terrorism<lb />
agains Western targets has declined. Even administration op-<lb />
ponents acknowledge that recently seized American hostages<lb />
HfJSbaT. n0t SCCm l haVC bccn rabtd bv groups iden-<lb />

To remedy the situation. Bell<lb />

- if ever achieved would make<lb />
college degrees less valuable and<lb />

Bell's goal is to double the<lb />

The week before, the Carnegie<lb />

students take a core curriculum<lb />
of certain liberal arts and science<lb />
courses, and write senior theises<lb />

Bell's report was more vague,<lb />
offering no proposal other than a<lb />
plea to spend a greater percentage<lb />
of the federal budget on colleges.<lb />
"Out of a federal budget of<lb />
S950 billion Bell told College-<lb />

In delivering the paper in<lb />

criticized the Reagan administra-<lb />

Most of those cuts were made<lb />
during Bell's tenure as Secretarv<lb />

Since leaving the administration,<lb />
however, Bell has become an in-<lb />

Wherein Rome<lb />
By PAT MOLLOY<lb />
At ECU, nearly 100 students<lb />
are residents of foreign countries.<lb />
Among those students are two<lb />
atuens of France; and onlv one<lb />
of those two is involved with the<lb />
'nternational Student Exchange<lb />
Program.<lb />
Her name is Veronique<lb />
Fariello, and she comes to Green-<lb />
ville from Grenoble, France, a ci-<lb />
' overlooked by snow-capped<lb />
mountains and bordered by a<lb />
calm river.<lb />
Upon arrival at ECU in<lb />
August. Veronique was first<lb />
taken aback by the casual dress<lb />
of the students: shorts and tee-<lb />
hirts seemed to be the norm,<lb />
whereas students dress a bit more<lb />
conservatively in Grenoble.<lb />
The rate of tuition was her se-<lb />
Non<lb />
cond surprise. In France, tuition<lb />
ranges from $10 to $100, depen-<lb />
ding on your parents' income. At<lb />
ECU, tuition can range anywhere<lb />
from $300 to $2500 per semester.<lb />
She also found the system of<lb />
education in America to be dif-<lb />
ferent from what she was ac-<lb />
customed to in France. "The<lb />
classes are different here she<lb />
said. "In France when you<lb />
choose a major, a program of 19<lb />
to 21 hours per week is included.<lb />
1 took 24 hours and made good<lb />
marks she added, smiling.<lb />
Until last year, the length of<lb />
the school terms were also dif-<lb />
ferent. Instead of semesters, the<lb />
students attended classes on a<lb />
yearly basis, from October until<lb />
June. Like us, however, they are<lb />
now attending school on a<lb />
semester-based system.<lb />
Veronique has found<lb />
American teachers to be more<lb />
Paternalistic than those in<lb />
rrance. They are more willing to<lb />
neip students than are their<lb />
French counterparts. "It is<lb />
harder, more difficult to study at<lb />
home than it is here. The rela-<lb />
tionship between teacher and stu-<lb />
dent is more superficial there.<lb />
You must teach yourself<lb />
The laid-back attitude of<lb />
students in Greenville is in sharp<lb />
contrast to the competitiveness of<lb />
students in Grenoble. The school<lb />
 large, (35,000) and because of<lb />
the high unemployment rate<lb />
students are fiercly competitive.<lb />
"In France, students study by<lb />
themselves. Most of the time, stu-<lb />
dying consists of research. I think<lb />
that the students in France realize<lb />
that if they want a diploma, they<lb />
must work very hard to obtain<lb />
it she adds.<lb />
1 Ways<lb />
Veronique, who is majoring in<lb />
English, says that dating in<lb />
France is no different than dating<lb />
in America. However, people in<lb />
general are more friendly<lb />
hereI've found students here to<lb />
be kind, very open minded and<lb />
very friendly she says, "At<lb />
school in Grenoble, people are<lb />
just there to study. Everybody is<lb />
just so busy and preoccupied.<lb />
Here, I can walk down the street<lb />
and people will say hello, or ask<lb />
how I am doing<lb />
Veronique will be leaving for<lb />
France on Friday, after two days<lb />
in New York. She departs from<lb />
ECU with good memories and an<lb />
understandable eagerness to go<lb />
home. "Being an ECU student<lb />
was a marvelous experience for<lb />
me. I've met many people, and<lb />
everyone has been very nice with<lb />
me. I hope to see you again<lb />

"Circumstances guide us all,<lb />
and you never know what kinds<lb />
of turns life is going to take" said<lb />
Kevin Ousley, one of the many<lb />
non-traditional students return-<lb />
ing to school to finish their<lb />
education.<lb />
Ousley is one of the 1611<lb />
students on campus over 30, fre-<lb />
quently referred to as the "non-<lb />
traditional" student. You have<lb />
seen them on campus, and you<lb />
may have a few in your classes,<lb />
but who are they, and what made<lb />
:hem come back to school?<lb />
Ousley returned to college after<lb />
12 years in the work force, un-<lb />
satisfied with his work ex-<lb />
periences. He saw others around<lb />
him with more education, and<lb />
this provoked in him the desire to<lb />
finish his education and get<lb />
ahead. He has not decided on a<lb />
major yet, but feels that as long<lb />
as he is in a more productive en-<lb />
vironment and is trying his best,<lb />
he can achieve his goals.<lb />
Surprisingly enough, Ousley said<lb />
that things haven't changed much<lb />
since he went to school in the ear-<lb />
ly 70s. The "trappings" as he<lb />
referred to fashions, have chang-<lb />
ed somewhat, but students still<lb />
have one thing in mind when<lb />
coming up with new fads, and<lb />
that is "to shock the<lb />
mainstream "There will always<lb />
be the conservatives on campus,<lb />
just as there will always be those<lb />
who insist on being different he<lb />
said with a laugh as he shook his<lb />
head.<lb />
Some non-traditional students<lb />
return to school to move ahead in<lb />
their current job, some to gain<lb />
more mobility, some to fulfill<lb />
personal goals, some for the<lb />
sheer sake of learning and some<lb />
for the reward they get from con-<lb />
quering a challenge.<lb />
There are also sacrafices in-<lb />
volved in resuming a college<lb />
education. Randi Homer, a non-<lb />
traditional student who main-<lb />
tains a family while going to<lb />
school, said, "I found that com-<lb />
ing back to school is a major and<lb />
carefully thought out decision <lb />
one that's almost always more<lb />
complex because we (the non-<lb />
traditional students) have already<lb />
assumed other commitments and<lb />
responsibilities Homer said<lb />
that going back to school has an<lb />
impact on the very structure of<lb />
the non-traditional student's life.<lb />
While to some students<lb />
sacrifice may mean giving up a<lb />
steady income, to others it may<lb />
mean giving up a job until they<lb />
can return more knowlegeable in<lb />
their field. To some sacrifice<lb />
means giving up valuable time<lb />
that could be spent with the fami-<lb />
ly.<lb />
Margaret Brothers, 37, return-<lb />
ing to get her masters degree, said<lb />
she has learned how to deal with<lb />
this problem by being more<lb />
aware of time management so<lb />
that she doesn't take too much<lb />
away from her family. She says<lb />
she takes her time more seriously<lb />
than when she previously went to<lb />
school, and she has learned to<lb />
budget it effectively because of<lb />
the additional areas in her life<lb />
that require her attention.<lb />
Brothers said that with the help<lb />
of her husband and other outside<lb />
services she is able to maintain a<lb />
job and a family and to go to<lb />
school as well. This is not easy of<lb />
course, but as with most non-<lb />
traditional students, the desire to<lb />
learn is what pushes her.<lb />
Brothers noted that sometimes<lb />
she feels separated from the other<lb />
students on campus. She said,<lb />
"At times it is like being on the<lb />
outside looking in She said that<lb />
she is more studious now because<lb />
she knows her purpose. By com-<lb />
ing back to school she has gained<lb />
more leverage in her present job.<lb />
Non-traditional students are<lb />
not unique in their desire to learn<lb />
and succeed. Some traditional<lb />
undergraduates also exhibit this<lb />
eagerness. Although this<lb />
sometimes may be the case, said<lb />
Randi Horner, "Many of the<lb />
traditional students regard the<lb />
university experience as another<lb />
example of an adult-instituted<lb />
hurdle-one which they must get<lb />
over, around, or through before<lb />
they can fully engage in their<lb />
lives Horner said that the non-<lb />
traditional student views the<lb />
university as a privilege, and ap-<lb />
preciates more the opportunity to<lb />
be here.<lb />
There are many reasons why<lb />
some people come back to school<lb />
after so many years. But the most<lb />
common motivation the non-<lb />
traditional student gave was<lb />
simply, "I want to They all ex-<lb />
pressed that the desire to learn<lb />
outweighed the obstacles that<lb />
stood in their way.<lb />

Yes, that time of year is<lb />
already upon us again: that time<lb />
when the house is full of warm<lb />
kitchen smells, and outside the<lb />
air is crisp and you look at all the<lb />
barren trees putting forth twinkly<lb />
lights and you say to yourself,<lb />
"Say, wasn't it just Halloween<lb />
last week?"<lb />
Needless to say, the holiday<lb />
momentum is building even as<lb />
you read this and prepare for<lb />
Thanksgiving break. And what<lb />
would the holidays be like<lb />
without those TV Christmas<lb />
specials? Nowadays, there is such<lb />
a deluge of Christmas programs,<lb />
especially when you add those<lb />
available on video cassette, that<lb />
there is no way you'll be able to<lb />
see them all. Here is a guide for<lb />
holiday viewing so you can plan<lb />
for maximum enjoyment this<lb />
season.<lb />
There are two specials without<lb />
which it just doesn't feel like<lb />
Christmas. The first is Rankin-<lb />
Bass's "Rudolph the Red-Nosed<lb />
Reindeer perhaps the earliest<lb />
and certainly the best in their<lb />
long series of puppet-animated<lb />
holiday specials. An elusive spirit<lb />
enlivens Rudolph and his pals<lb />
and even the songs (which are<lb />
embarrassing in most kiddie<lb />
specials) are enjoyable.<lb />
Hey, has anyone else noticed<lb />
that "Rudolph" is the only<lb />
Christmas special to depict Santa<lb />
Claus as a jerk? Remember how<lb />
Santa joins in with everyone else<lb />
in rejecting Rudolph because of<lb />
his glowing nose? In later years,<lb />
I've wondered what sort of effect<lb />
that had on disabled children<lb />
Certainly a moment of bad taste<lb />
unique in holiday programming.<lb />
Despite this flaw, Rudolph re-<lb />
mains a classic. Who doesn't get<lb />
a lump in the throat when Clarice<lb />
(the sort of doe Wally Cleaver<lb />
would date if he were a deer)<lb />
starts singing "There's Always<lb />
Tomorrow And what about the<lb />
old tug on the heart strings you<lb />
feel when Santa finally says<lb />
"Rudolph with your nose so<lb />
bright Won't you guide my<lb />
sleigh tonight?" Sniff. Sniff. Ex-<lb />
cuse me. I seem to have<lb />
something in my eye<lb />
The second must-see-every-<lb />
year special is "A Charlie Brown<lb />
Christmas This was the first<lb />
Charlie Brown special and it set<lb />
the standard of quality which was<lb />
kept until the more recent<lb />
specials. The late Vince<lb />
Guaraldi's sensitive jazz score,<lb />
the use of real children (many of<lb />
whom were kids from the pro-<lb />
ducer's neighborhood) for the<lb />
voices, and animator Bill<lb />
Melendez's careful simulation of<lb />
the Peanuts newspaper strip com-<lb />
bine to create a successful and ge-<lb />
nuine innocence which is never<lb />
once condescending.<lb />
Linus's recitation of the<lb />
Nativity, so powerful in its<lb />
simplicity, is one of the greatest<lb />
single minutes in animation<lb />
history.<lb />
Do I need to say anything<lb />
about It's A Wonderful Life!<lb />
Okay, you twisted my arm. This<lb />
movie was originally entitled The<lb />
Greatest Gift and it remains the<lb />
greatest gift Hollywood has ever<lb />
sent us for Christmas. As you<lb />
probably know, there will be a<lb />
new computer colored version<lb />
making the rounds this year. If<lb />
you have a choice and you have<lb />
to choose, see it in black and<lb />
white. Director Frank Capra was<lb />
a true craftsman in his medium<lb />
and colorizing this film is sort of<lb />
like enhancing Gustave Dore's<lb />
work with crayolas.<lb />
Watch for Walt Disney's One<lb />
Magic Christmas, which is set to<lb />
debut on video this year. It's an<lb />
80s version of A Christmas<lb />
Carol. If anything has approach-<lb />
ed It's a Wonderful Life in recent<lb />
years, it's this movie. Character<lb />
have "seen his star in the east"<lb />
and arrive about two thousand<lb />
years too late (you know how<lb />
long it takes for light to travel).<lb />
The animation of the aliens is<lb />
particularly impressive.<lb />

Costello's Newest Attracts<lb />
By D. A. SWANSON<lb />

and<lb />
Elvis Costello Blood<lb />
Chocolate (Columbia)<lb />
The Coolies dig? (DB Recs)<lb />
Will the real Elvis Costello<lb />
please stand up?<lb />
Who, really, is this man? The<lb />
album cover attributes the music<lb />
to Elvis Costello and the Attrac-<lb />
tions. The songs are all written by<lb />
McManus (Costello's real last<lb />
name). And a photo on the back<lb />
cover indentifies a Costello look-<lb />
alike and band member as<lb />
Napoleon Dynamite. Has<lb />
Costello become the new Eve of<lb />
three faces? Or is this all just too<lb />
much silliness?<lb />
Well, whether the musical -<lb />
chair names are silly or not, this<lb />
album, Blood and Chocolate, is<lb />
the least silly and most produc-<lb />
tive thing that the 'angry young<lb />
man' has done in years. Going<lb />
back to his simple rock-and-roll<lb />
roots and reintroducing the im-<lb />
portance of acoustic guitar that<lb />
highlighted his early work, Elvis<lb />
has turned around a tragic march<lb />
actor Hany Dean Stanton and toward obscurity.<lb />
Mary Steenburgen head up a Producing, and helping out<lb />
good cast. Cream of the crop. with the acoustic guitars, is Nick<lb />
To wrap things up, I'd like to Lowe, long-time Costello cohort<lb />
Hey, I thought Christmas was still a month away!<lb />
mention a few leaser known<lb />
Christmas gems which you may<lb />
not have seen but which are<lb />
especially wonderful the first<lb />
time around anyway. The first is<lb />
Canadian animation studio<lb />
Nelvana's Cosmic Christmas, the<lb />
story of three alien wise men who<lb />
His return to the production<lb />
room may also have a lot to do<lb />
with the return of the old sound.<lb />
It is not, however, a pure<lb />
return. Many of the pseudo-<lb />
psychedelic guitar breaks in songs<lb />
like the melancholic "I Want<lb />
You seem more indicative of a<lb />
contemporary influence. But pin-<lb />
ning down Costello, despite the<lb />
apparent similarity from tune to<lb />
tune, has always been somewhat<lb />
difficult because of his well posi-<lb />
tioned diversions.<lb />
"Battered Old Bird a ballad<lb />
about "The landlady's husband"<lb />
is his most obvious return to out-<lb />
and-out story telling, though<lb />
most of the cuts ("Crimes Of<lb />
Paris" and "Next Time<lb />
Around") are at least conceptual<lb />
tales from Europe.<lb />
The tinny tenor, with all of his<lb />
strange and obscure views of ur-<lb />
ban life, is back with Blood A<lb />
Chocolate, and thank goodness<lb />
for that. He may still be<lb />
somewhat self-concious and<lb />
painfully indirect in some of his<lb />
lyrics, but the music and the<lb />
psychedelic breaks are right on<lb />
the money.<lb />
What is Paul Simon saying<lb />
about the Coolies? With their<lb />
Atlanta, Georgia versions of<lb />
Simon's "Scarborough Fair "I<lb />
Am A Rock" and "Cecilia" on<lb />
their latest album, dighe must<lb />
either be in hysterics or tears.<lb />
The entire album, in fact, is<lb />
dedicated to old Simon and Gar-<lb />
fun kle ballads (except for Paul<lb />
Anka's "Having My Baby"), or<lb />
perhaps, the massacre of them.<lb />
But at least that attack has been<lb />
made with a semblance of<lb />
humor.<lb />
"Scarborough Fair" opens the<lb />
collection in a strange, droning<lb />
chant, only vaguely reminiscent<lb />
of the original, and "Bridge Over<lb />
Troubled Water" is so heavy and<lb />
convoluted that it might as well<lb />
be another tune. "Cecilia" is<lb />
played with a rockabilly beat.<lb />
It always sets me back when a<lb />
new band rewrites old classics. 1<lb />
have to make a few more than the<lb />
standard attempts at evaluating<lb />
the final quality. With dig?, the<lb />
verdict has to parallel what a<lb />
light-hearted slap-stick comedy,<lb />
would deserve. The novelty<lb />
alone, like Weird Al's classic<lb />
covers, will command attention<lb />
from the music listening com-<lb />
munity. Beyond that novelty,<lb />
though, the bounds of these<lb />
classic minstrel songs have been<lb />
stretched, in most places, beyond<lb />
the breaking point.<lb />
Still, there is something to be<lb />
said for the humor that these<lb />
guys inject into their renditions.<lb />
Clay Harper's voice has a very<lb />
versatile range, almost as though<lb />
he were trying on different<lb />
masks. It may even be that anv<lb />
success this album finds may be<lb />
attributed to his comic nack for<lb />
vocal exaggeration.<lb />
But a comic bent does not an<lb />
entire L.P. sustain. In fact the<lb />
best cut on the album is a very<lb />
fine instrumental version of<lb />
"Mrs. Robinson from the<lb />
soundtrack of The Graduate<lb />
These five lads hailing from<lb />
Hotlanta really do have talent<lb />
galore. Their humorous attitude<lb />

another Cuba if the contras do<lb />
not succeed in overthrowing the<lb />

But Hamer believes there is an<lb />
alternative. "Reagan has stated<lb />

tha' we, as Americans, should be<lb />

both sides of the issue. "There is<lb />
Jl1e row,rv thai students here<lb />

In talking to Nicaraguan<lb />

of their feelings on the war.<lb />
"Thev just want the war to end<lb />

people often wonder what hap-<lb />

According to Hamer, "Most<lb />
ol the distribution happens<lb />
through church channels . . . m<lb />

America candidates. Senior<lb />
tackle Jerome Brown leads the<lb />
line with 65 tackles while junior<lb />
free safety Bennie Blades leads<lb />
the Hurricanes with nine in-<lb />

ECU quarterback Charie<lb />

defense is certainly powerful and<lb />
that preparation will play an im-<lb />
portant role in Thursday's con-<lb />
test.<lb />
"Personnel wise, they have<lb />

preparation prior to this game<lb />
will be a definite key for us.<lb />
"We definitely look at this<lb />

Of ECU,<lb />
Top Powers<lb />
The ECU Pirate football<lb />
team got an inornate amount<lb />
of criticism from one of the na<lb />
tion's top sports publications in<lb />
the Nov. 24 issue of Sport. Il-<lb />
lustrated<lb />
The article, entitled "It only<lb />
hurts for a little while by<lb />
Rick Reilly frequently slams<lb />
the Piiates while offering<lb />
criticisms about the nation's<lb />
top football powers scheduling<lb />
weaker opponents for sure<lb />
wins.<lb />
One exerpt from the article<lb />
noted, "Macho scheduling is<lb />
out. Bake-sale scheduling is in<lb />
 a cupcake here, a creampuff<lb />
there. Bowling for bucksthe<lb />
money is too big to trv<lb />
anything else. And it's a<lb />
strategy that's limited only hv<lb />
the number of games Past<lb />
Carolina can play "<lb />
But wait, there's more<lb />
"And about the time you sit<lb />
down to Thanksgiving dinner,<lb />
Miami will be kicking off<lb />
against East Carolina. You like<lb />
the baked, stuffed or<lb />
mashed<lb />
Now are the Pirates really<lb />
that bad. After watching ECl<lb />
last week, we think not<lb />
Remember, Cincinnati almost<lb />
defeated Penn State (23-17).<lb />
Also, the Pirates stayed close to<lb />
the Hurricanes in last year's<lb />
contest before losing 27-15<lb />
while Miami slipped past E I<lb />
12-7 in '83.<lb />
We're not saying that the<lb />
Pirates are the favorite here,<lb />
but a little respect would be ap-<lb />
preciated.<lb />
Reilly finishes the story by<lb />
saying that fans shouldn't at-<lb />
tend games that are apparent<lb />
mismatches, and that there<lb />
should be a playoff to deter-<lb />
mine the true national cham-<lb />
pion.<lb />
In the final paragraph of the<lb />
story, Reilly could not resist a<lb />
parting shot at the Pirates as<lb />
thev prepare for No. 1 ranked<lb />
Miami. He said, "Changes<lb />
need to be made for the game's<lb />
sake. And if not for the game's<lb />
sake, at least for East<lb />
Carolina's<lb />
Hopefully, the only change<lb />
will be in Penn State's post-<lb />
season travel plans, as a Hur-<lb />
ricane loss would send Penn<lb />
State to the Orange Bow 1 with a<lb />
battle with Big-8 champion<lb />
Oklahoma.<lb />
Questions To Be A nswered<lb />
By TIM CHANDLER<lb />
Var sports ft<lb />
Several questions about the<lb />
state of Ladv Pirate Basketball<lb />
will be answered this Saturdav<lb />
when ECl tips off the 1986-87<lb />
season at the Lady Eagle Classic.<lb />
The tournament, which is be-<lb />
ing held at Georgia Southern Col-<lb />
lege, will showcase the Pirates,<lb />
Tulane, Georgia Southern and<lb />
perennial power South Carolina.<lb />
Among the questions to be<lb />
answered about this edition of<lb />
the Lady Pirates is how will they<lb />
adjust without the three leading<lb />
scorers from last year's team<lb />
(Lisa Squirewell, Sylvia Bragg<lb />
and Lorraine Foster).<lb />
Another question that has yet<lb />
to be answered is the condition of<lb />
the Delphine Mabry, the Pirates<lb />
hopeful starting point guard.<lb />
Mabry suffered an injury dur-<lb />
ing preseason practice drills and<lb />
it is not yet known whether the<lb />
injury is a stress fracture or not<lb />
according to Pirate head coach<lb />
Emily Manwaring.<lb />
The probable starting lineup<lb />
for ECU in its opener will be<lb />
returning starter Alma Bethea,<lb />
Monique Pompili, junior college<lb />
transfer Valerie Cooper, Pam<lb />
Williams and Mabry.<lb />
Manwaring stated that if<lb />
Mabry was unable to play that<lb />
she would be replaced in the<lb />
lineup by either Jody Rodriquez<lb />
or Chris O'Connor.<lb />
Manwaring went on to say that<lb />
freshman standout Irish<lb />
Hamilton, who suffered an in-<lb />
jury early in the practice season,<lb />
could also see considerable play-<lb />
ing time.<lb />

"It's not a very predictable<lb />
situation now because of<lb />
the injuries we've had. He<lb />
have yet to have a practice<lb />
where all five starters have<lb />
played together<lb />
Emily Manwaring<lb />
Manwaring said that it was<lb />
hard to say at this point just how<lb />
well the Pirates will play as a<lb />
team.<lb />
"It's not a very predictable<lb />
situation now because of the in-<lb />
juries we've had. We have yet to<lb />
have a practice where all five<lb />
starters played together said<lb />
Manwaring. "We've had three<lb />
intra-squad scrimmages and we<lb />
did not have all the starters for<lb />
any of those either<lb />
The Pirates, along with South<lb />
Carolina, will be the favorites in<lb />
the Lady Eagle Classic according<lb />
to Manwaring.<lb />
South Carolina took the title in<lb />
the Metro Conference last year<lb />
and gained a berth in the NCAA<lb />
tournament enroute to posting a<lb />
19-11 record, however, according<lb />
to Manwaring the Gamecocks<lb />
face much the same situation as<lb />
do the Pirates.<lb />
"They (South Carolina) face<lb />
much the same situation as we do<lb />
as far as losing players said<lb />
Manwaring. "They also lost their<lb />
three leading scorers from last<lb />
year<lb />
Tulane enters the tournament<lb />
hoping to get off to a good start<lb />
and a hopefully better record<lb />
than last year's J6-12 mark The<lb />
Green Wave however also lost i<lb />
lot of firepower from las; year's<lb />
team as they only return three ol<lb />
five starters.<lb />
Georgia Southern returns three<lb />
backcourt starters from last<lb />
year's 13-14 team, one of which is<lb />
Regina Daves, the New South<lb />
Conference play er-of-t he-year<lb />
last year.<lb />
Daves averaged 21 points and<lb />
nine rebounds a game last vear<lb />
and led the NCAA's in shooting<lb />
percentage with a sparkling 70 5<lb />
percent from the floor.<lb />
The Pirates first appearance at<lb />
home will beTues Dec 2 when<lb />
they take on the Universm of<lb />
Wnmpeg (Canada). The game is<lb />
scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. t.poff<lb />

sion, Patrick Ricci in the men's<lb />
intermediate and Mike Graves in<lb />
the men's open division.<lb />
The best match of the tourna-<lb />
ment came in the men's in-<lb />
termediate finals. Patrick Ricci<lb />
was pitted against David<lb />
McEwan. The first game was<lb />
closer then the score indicated as<lb />
both playes were just getting<lb />
warmed up. Ricci won this game<lb />
15-2. The second game, however,<lb />
was probably the best game of<lb />
the tournament. McEwan led<lb />
most of the way and it looked as<lb />
though he would win easily, but<lb />
Ricci came roaring back with<lb />
some good defensive play and a<lb />
nasty serve that tied the score at<lb />
14 all. After exchanging serves,<lb />
McEwan finally came out on top<lb />
17-15. Ricci served the tie-<lb />
breaker game and built an insur-<lb />
mountable lead that McEwan<lb />
couldn't overcome. The final<lb />
score was 11-5.<lb />
The first place winners each<lb />
received IM Champion T-shirts<lb />
and the second place finishers<lb />
won ECU-Pirates mugs. These<lb />
