Bratton, professor and director<lb />
of graduate studies in history at<lb />
ECU, received the first runner-up<lb />
award in the Willie Parker Peace<lb />
History Book competition of the<lb />
NC Society of County and Local<lb />
Historians for excellence in the<lb />
w nhngs of East Carolina I niver-<lb />
sity: The Formative Years<lb />
1907-1982.<lb />
Bratton was presented the<lb />
award at the society's dinner in<lb />
Raleigh on Nov. 8th. Various<lb />
organizations from North<lb />
Carolina participated in this<lb />
weeks activities including the NC<lb />
Poetry Society, the NC State<lb />
I iterary Society, the Historical<lb />
Association, NC Society of<lb />
County and Local Historians, the<lb />
Victorian Society, and others.<lb />
According to Bratton awards<lb />
are given during the week for<lb />
various categories of books that<lb />
have been published during the<lb />
year<lb />
The Willie Parker Peace<lb />
History Book award is presented<lb />
annuallv to give special recogni-<lb />
tion to NC writers who have<lb />
published a book about a NC<lb />
county, institution, or individual.<lb />
The society was organzied in 1941<lb />
for the purpose of collecting and<lb />
preserving North Carolina<lb />
history, traditions and folklore<lb />
not only on a statewide basis but<lb />
also on a local and countv basis.<lb />
According to Bratton, the<lb />
writing of East Carolina Univer-<lb />
sity: The Formative Years<lb />
1907-1982 was initiated as plans<lb />
were being formulated to<lb />
celebrate the 75th anniversary of<lb />
ECU in 1982. Bratton said, "And<lb />
so, as we were looking to that<lb />
milestone, a number of people in<lb />
the administration and othe<lb />
said that it would be very good if<lb />
we had a history. Of course, we<lb />
could not have an instant history<lb />
ready before the 75th anniver-<lb />
sary, but those were the cir-<lb />
cumstances in looking forward to<lb />
that celebration that inspired the<lb />
idea<lb />
Bratton was selected to com-<lb />
pile and write the history through<lb />
an administrative decision. Brat-<lb />
ton commented on this challenge,<lb />
"It was a real pn liege to work<lb />
with so many people. I was very<lb />
impressed with our history. I was<lb />
not as familiar as I think most<lb />
people have not been with the<lb />
whole narrative, the whole focus<lb />
of our history over the years and<lb />
what an outstanding institution<lb />
East Carolina was from its earliest<lb />
period. So, I was both pleased<lb />
and delighted to see the sort of<lb />
heritage we do have<lb />
To compile the necessary data<lb />
for her book, Bratton did<lb />
research on campus and in<lb />
Raleigh at the State Archives<lb />
where a majoritv of records of<lb />
state institutions are kept.<lb />
Bratton substantiated this in-<lb />
formation with personal inter-<lb />
views. She interviewed approx-<lb />
imately 75 people who had been<lb />
knowledgeable about ECU at<lb />
one nme or another<lb />
According to bratton, many<lb />
interviewees were alumni from<lb />
the earlier years. One person in-<lb />
terviewed was a member of the<lb />
first graduating class. The fur-<lb />
therest Bratton travelled to inter-<lb />
view was to Florida where a<lb />
faculty member had retired. She<lb />
said he was extremely<lb />
knowledgeable about cir-<lb />
cumstances and events that took<lb />
place in the 1940s on the campus.<lb />
Bratton said, "I tried to select<lb />
representative people, not all<lb />
from any one period, but a sam-<lb />
ple from different student<lb />
generations through the years.<lb />
All of them shared one thing in<lb />
common: a real deep love and af-<lb />
fection for the institution<lb />
Major historical events of East<lb />
Carolina are portrayed in Brat-<lb />
ton's book. According to Brat-<lb />
ton, these include the glorious<lb />
days of Robert Wright who was<lb />
the first president of East<lb />
Carolina and who was so careful<lb />
and concerned that everything he<lb />
did be accomplished in a proper<lb />
manner as to establish the right<lb />
traditions for East Carolina; the<lb />
traumatic circumstances surroun-<lb />
ding the imprisonment of the se-<lb />
cond president in the 1940s for<lb />
the embezzlement of student<lb />
funds which caused a split of<lb />
loyalties within the faculty,<lb />
students, and community; to the<lb />
excitement of the transition from<lb />
college to university status in the<lb />
1960s and the establishment of<lb />
the East Carolina University<lb />
Medical School.<lb />
Bratton commented further,<lb />
"One thing was not an event but<lb />
a continuity of the institution<lb />
(which) from the time of its foun-<lb />
ding, was it's reaching out to<lb />
serve the region, not just being an<lb />
educational institution, but see-<lb />
ing it's function as one to<lb />
enhance the quality of life for the<lb />
people within the region. That<lb />
(goal) has been a consistent trend<lb />
that each head of the institution<lb />
has very consistently followed<lb />
To compile the necessary data<lb />
for her book, Bratton did<lb />
research at the East Carolina<lb />
campus and in Raleigh at the<lb />

Lecturer Focuses On World Hunger<lb />
By VIRCIMA 1.1V INt.hiON<lb />
Sff Vkrllrr<lb />
Dispelling the myths of hunger<lb />
was the focus of a speech given<lb />
by Joseph Collins Tuesday.<lb />
Collins is the co-director of<lb />
Food First, an Institute for Food<lb />
and Development. His work with<lb />
Food First has taken him to<lb />
Nicarragua, the Phillipines and<lb />
other third world countries. This<lb />
has given him first-hand ex-<lb />
periences with the causes of<lb />
hunger.<lb />
Collins said that Americans<lb />
believe that hunger is caused by:<lb />
not enough food in countries,<lb />
over population and lack of<lb />
technology in third world coun-<lb />
tries.<lb />
He said that if grain was the<lb />
only food considered there is<lb />
enough in the world today to pro-<lb />
vide 3600 calories for every man,<lb />
women, and child in the third<lb />
world. This is grain alone; not<lb />
other forms of food. Collins said<lb />
these Figures should convince<lb />
people that there is enough food.<lb />
He said that 60 percent of the<lb />
hungry are in such countries as<lb />
India, Indonesia and Brazil and<lb />
all of these countries produce<lb />
food for export.<lb />
The audience was visibly<lb />
shocked to hear how Indian<lb />
military forces guarded the grain<lb />
so the poor could not take it. He<lb />
said that rats were more increased<lb />
at those airfields.<lb />
Collins said African nations,<lb />
such as Ethiopia and Sudan,<lb />
where pictures of the famine stir-<lb />
red the American conscious<lb />
about hunger, were exporters of<lb />
grain.<lb />
Collins said the idea of the<lb />
world's high population con-<lb />
tributing to hunger was not true.<lb />
In countries where hunger was<lb />
prevalent, families had no<lb />
economic security so many<lb />
children had to become apart of<lb />
the labor force. Collins said in<lb />
Cuba and other countries "types<lb />
of reforms were set up to increase<lb />
the security of at least half of the<lb />
population which had led these<lb />
countries away from hunger.<lb />
Also, American farm<lb />
technology is not the way to help<lb />
alleviate hunger, according to<lb />
Collins.<lb />
Collins said usually the only<lb />
farmers who can afford the<lb />
technology are the elites (farmers<lb />
who use he poor as farm labor).<lb />
These clue farmers take 2 bushels<lb />
of every 3 bushels that the<lb />
sharecroppers produce. Accor-<lb />
ding to Collins, in situations<lb />
where the government does re-<lb />
quire poor farmers to invest in<lb />
technology, the farmer usually<lb />
ends up in debt and has to<lb />
remember to stay at resistance<lb />
level.<lb />
The final myth that Collins<lb />
discussed was the idea that<lb />
America's standard of living<lb />
would decline if the standard of<lb />
living in third world countries<lb />
would increase.<lb />
Collins said the amount of<lb />
money the U.S. spends in buying<lb />
products from third world<lb />
govenments to keep their market<lb />
below poverty level is equal to the<lb />
amount of money Americans<lb />
save by buying cheaper goods<lb />
that are made in these countries.<lb />
After presenting these views,<lb />
Collins began to talk about the<lb />
reasons of hunger.<lb />
Collins said the root cause of<lb />
hunger came from unfair practice<lb />
in the use of food resources. He<lb />
said "Government budgets skew-<lb />
ed the programs to benefit elite<lb />
farmers<lb />
According to Collins, it is the<lb />
elite farmer in third world coun-<lb />
tries that prevent reform from<lb />
coming about. He said farmers<lb />
benefit from having the masses of<lb />
people in their country remain<lb />
poor and hungry because they<lb />
will work for the lowest possible<lb />
wages.<lb />
In countries where land reform<lb />
takes place, farm owners will<lb />
often evict tenant farmers so they<lb />
do not have to comply to rules<lb />
dealing with tenants. This in-<lb />
creases the number of people w ho<lb />
are landless and without a means<lb />
of supporting themselves.<lb />
Collins said another contribu-<lb />
tion to the hunger problem,<lb />
which is not usually viewed as a<lb />
problem, is US foreign aid.<lb />
US aid, according to Collins,<lb />
usually doesn't go to feed the<lb />
poor and does not go to countries<lb />
who favor land reform.<lb />

Foundation Calls For College Overhaul<lb />
WASHINGTON nr.roci <lb />
WASHINGTON. D C (CPS) -<lb />
Amencan colleges are in need of<lb />
a dramatic overhaul, a big new<lb />
report issued last week by the<lb />
C arnegie Foundation asserted<lb />
Among other things, the foun-<lb />
dation urged colleges to stop re-<lb />
quinni students to take standar-<lb />
dized admissions tests, to make<lb />
all students take a "core cur-<lb />
riculum" of courses and to have<lb />
all students write and defend a<lb />
senior thesis" before getting<lb />
their degrees.<lb />
A number of educators,<lb />
moreover, say there's a good<lb />
chance colleges may adopt manv<lb />
ol the suggestions in the near<lb />
tuture. Still others say the recom-<lb />
mendations are impractical and<lb />
much too expensive.<lb />
In pushing the three-year-old<lb />
school reform movement up to<lb />
the college level, the foundation<lb />
asserted colleges are "driven bv<lb />
careerism and overshadowed bv<lb />
graduate and professional educa-<lb />
tion<lb />
As a result, "many of the na-<lb />
tion's colleges are more suc-<lb />
cessful in credentialing than in<lb />
providing a quality education for<lb />
their students the report said.<lb />
In early October, U.S.<lb />
Secretary of Education William<lb />
Bennett leveled essentially the<lb />
same charges, adding colleges<lb />
sometimes are so concerned with<lb />
finding money to operate that<lb />
they don't educate students well.<lb />
In response. Harvard President<lb />
Derek Bok, Educational Testing<lb />
Service President Gregory Anrig.<lb />
and American Association of<lb />
University Professors General<lb />
Secretary Ernest Benjamin,<lb />
among others, blasted Bennett as<lb />
being hypocritical or short-<lb />
sighted.<lb />
Bennett later claimed an un-<lb />
named educator told him that, if<lb />
he continued such criticisms, no<lb />
college would rehire him as a pro-<lb />
fessor after he leaves the Dept. of<lb />
Education.<lb />
The response to the Carnegie<lb />
Foundation's version of the same<lb />
criticisms has been considerably<lb />
milder.<lb />
"We are always open to discus-<lb />
sion said Dr. Thomas Brewer<lb />
of Georgia state.<lb />
Some administrators were<lb />
quick to claim such reforms <lb />
especially in admissions tests and<lb />
requiring senior theses would<lb />
be good for others, but not for<lb />
them.<lb />
"Our view is that Dr. (Ernest)<lb />
Boyer (the report's author) is<lb />
primarily addressing smaller<lb />
undergraduate schools says Dr.<lb />
Bernard Cohen, vice chancellor<lb />
of academic affairs for the<lb />
University of Wisconsin-<lb />
Madison.<lb />
Georgia State's Brewer adds<lb />
"we would devise other admis-<lb />
sion standards" if the founda-<lb />
tion's case for doing so is good<lb />
enough.<lb />
Both Brewer and Cohen agree<lb />
Boyer's suggestion to make<lb />
seniors write and defend theses in<lb />
front of a panel of faculty<lb />
members would cause a<lb />
"logistical nightmare<lb />
"We would have lots of<lb />
logistical problems. The big<lb />
universities, the Universities of<lb />
Texas of the world, admit about<lb />
14,000 freshmen each year<lb />
Brewer says.<lb />
"There's no way to do that<lb />
Cohen says emphatically. "Our<lb />
graduating classes are about four<lb />
to five thousand now. To staff<lb />
and schedule the small seminars<lb />
(at which seniors would defend<lb />
their theses) would be an extraor-<lb />
dinary cost<lb />
The Carnegie Foundation also<lb />
proposed making all collegians<lb />
demonstrate English language<lb />
proficiency to graduate, and pass<lb />
a core of English, art, history and<lb />
science courses<lb />
The proposals, savs Robert<lb />
Hochstein of the Princeton-based<lb />
foundation, were reached after<lb />
three years of interviewing at 29<lb />
colleges of differing s:e and mis-<lb />
sion.<lb />
"Our goal is to make college<lb />
better for all students, period. If<lb />
in doing so, the colleges become<lb />
better known and more suc-<lb />
cessful, so be it he lays. "We<lb />
are driven by a concern that the<lb />
next generation be adequately<lb />
prepared to meet their respon<lb />
sibilities to not only students, but<lb />
adults as well<lb />
After years of previous school<lb />
reform reports from the Carnegie<lb />
foundation, the U.S. Dept<lb />
Education, the National Com<lb />
mission on Education in the<lb />
States and almost a dozen other<lb />
bodies, however, many schools<lb />
feel they're already on the road<lb />

Education<lb />
How Should Teachers Be Taught?<lb />
What's one of the biggest problems<lb />
with the American education<lb />
system today? Teachers <lb />
specifically, teacher education.<lb />
The debate over teacher educa-<lb />
tion has been raging for sometime<lb />
and there is no doubt it will con-<lb />
tinue to do so far into the future.<lb />
Some, like American Educational<lb />
Research Association President<lb />
David Berliner, believe the key to<lb />
producing good teachers is educa-<lb />
tion courses.<lb />
The opposing camp, of which<lb />
Education Policy Studies Director<lb />
Denis Doyle is a member, feels too<lb />
much emphasis has been placed on<lb />
educaton courses and not enough<lb />
on subject matter.<lb />
These two professionals hae<lb />
been debating this issue for<lb />
sometime. But what can one say<lb />
about such a debate when both<lb />
sides are in the right?<lb />
Let's look at both positions brief-<lb />
ly. Berliner says, "In general,<lb />
knowing one's subject matter does<lb />
not necessarily make one a good<lb />
teacher<lb />
How true. Many is the time we've<lb />
come across a brilliant professor or<lb />
a knowledgeable high school<lb />
teacher only to discover they lack<lb />
the teaching skills to communicate<lb />
their knowledge.<lb />
Doyle, however, claims, "You<lb />
can't teach what you don't know<lb />
This brings back memories of the<lb />
coach teachers many of us en-<lb />
countered in high school. For those<lb />
of you fortunate enough not to<lb />
have met them, these are men for<lb />
whom teaching is a requirement for<lb />
coaching. They are often assigned<lb />
Health or History classes, classes in<lb />
which the subject matter taught is<lb />
not vital to college admissions,<lb />
unlike Math or English.<lb />
Our point is this: too much of<lb />
either one of these schools of<lb />
thought can produce an unprepared<lb />
teacher and prove detrimental to<lb />
the students' education. So why not<lb />
take the best of both worlds?<lb />
The Carnegie Forum on Educa-<lb />
tion and Economy released a study<lb />
examining the possibilities of<lb />
upgrading teacher training and<lb />
salaries. Included in the suggestions<lb />
made by the study was a proposal<lb />
to eliminate undergraduate educa-<lb />
tion degrees. Instead, students<lb />
Misconcepti<lb />
B JAMES FALLOWS<lb />
In his classic work of crackpot anthropology,<lb />
"The Japanese Brain Dr. Tadanobu Tsunoda<lb />
told his Japanese readers not to feel bad about the<lb />
difficulty of learning other languages. "Isn't it<lb />
remarkable he said, "that whenever you meet so-<lb />
meone who speaks English really well, he turns out<lb />
to be a drip?"<lb />
Japanese students learn English exactly the way<lb />
Americans (used to) learn Latin: through long, bor-<lb />
ing analyses of antique written passages. Not sur-<lb />
prisingly, most of them feel as comfortable making<lb />
English conversation as I would if Julius Caesar<lb />
strolled up for a chat. The few who do speak good<lb />
English have generally lived overseas- and have<lb />
become less Japanese.<lb />
Still, for all the peculiar Japaneseness of his senti-<lb />
ment, the spirit of Dr. Tsunoda is alive in America<lb />
today. It is reflected in the general disdain for bil-<lb />
ingualism and bilingual education, and in cam-<lb />
paigns like the one on California's ballot last week,<lb />
sponsored by the group called USEnglish, to<lb />
declare that English is America's "official"<lb />
language.<lb />
Yes, yes, everyone needs to learn English. We<lb />
have enough forces pulling us apart that we don't<lb />
want linguistic divisions too. But is there any reason<lb />
to get so worked up about today's Spanish-speaking<lb />
immigrants? I will confess that I once shared<lb />
USEnglish-type fears about Spanish language<lb />
separatism. But having spent a long time reporting<lb />
among immigrants, I'm not worried. And, having<lb />
been out of the country most of this year, I've come<lb />
to think that the whole language scare rests on two<lb />
bogus and parochial assumptions.<lb />
would be required to complete Bac-<lb />
calaureates in arts and sciences<lb />
followed by a proposed Masters in<lb />
teaching.<lb />
This would assure a fine balance<lb />
between education courses and<lb />
courses in the student teacher's<lb />
field of concentration.<lb />
Also proposed in the study was<lb />
the establishment of a board to set<lb />
nation-wide teaching standards for<lb />
teacher certification. At present,<lb />
certification is awarded by in-<lb />
dividual states according to varying<lb />
criteria. This places teachers in an<lb />
akward position as certification in<lb />
one state may not be recognized in<lb />
another until certain additional<lb />
training is complete.<lb />
For instance. North Carolina's<lb />
Teacher Certification is readily ac-<lb />
cepted in only 26 states. An<lb />
educaton major seeking work in<lb />
one of the reamining 24 states may<lb />
be required to complete additional<lb />
requirements set forth by that state.<lb />
Finally, the study proposes that<lb />
teachers who display progressive<lb />
levels of skill be rewarded with an<lb />
average annual salary of $35,000.<lb />
In creasing teachers' salaries is one<lb />
of the biggest steps we could take in<lb />
improving our education system.<lb />
As the National Education Associa-<lb />
tion has stated time and again, the<lb />
quality of education is linked to the<lb />
level of teachers' salaries.<lb />
The teaching profession has lost<lb />
many prospective educators to<lb />
private industry (especiallv in the<lb />
Math and Science fields) due to in-<lb />
adequate salaries. Few people are<lb />
willing to commit their lives to a job<lb />
worth, according to marketing<lb />
perceptions, $25,257 a year.<lb />
Do these proposals sound<lb />
idealistic? Do they present more an<lb />
educational Utopia than practical<lb />
steps to improve education in this<lb />
country? If so, then it may still be<lb />
to our advantage. Keep in mind,<lb />
one must know where he's going<lb />
before he sets out on his journev,<lb />
and believe us, the American educa-<lb />
tion system has quite a trek ahead<lb />
of it.<lb />
If we only make it half the<lb />
distance to these goals, then it is<lb />
still a long way from where we<lb />
stand now. And at present, from<lb />
where we're standing, the view is<lb />
not very good.<lb />

It is hard to imagine a more dramatic<lb />
narrative than that which led to the case<lb />
of Joe McGinniss v- Employers Rein-<lb />
surance Corp.<lb />
On The Right<lb />
By<lb />
WILLIAM K. BUCKLEY Jr.<lb />
In 1979, an Army doctor was tried. It<lb />
was alleged that nine years hefore he<lb />
had murdered his wife and two<lb />
children. This astonishing charge<lb />
against Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald made its<lb />
way quickly into the headlines and at-<lb />
tracted to it, among others, Joe McGin-<lb />
niss, a talented journalist and author<lb />
who undertook to write a newspaper<lb />
column on the subject. He put in for an<lb />
interview with Dr. MacDonald and,<lb />
before long, the indicted doctor said to<lb />
McGinniss something on the order of:<lb />
Joe, 1 like the looks of you. You are<lb />
smart and a good writer. 1 need money<lb />
for my defense. I am, needless to say,<lb />
innocent. Let's make a deal. I will give<lb />
you the exclusive inside run on my<lb />
story, and you agree to write it up and<lb />
give me a substantial share of the<lb />
royalties. OK ?<lb />
McGinniss was interested it was a<lb />
big story, of many dimensions. But he<lb />
entered into an agrement with caution.<lb />
His terms were: 1) MacDonald would<lb />
agree to let McGinniss listen in on all<lb />
defense conferences; 2) McGinniss<lb />
would be free to write exacltv as he saw<lb />
the case as it developed; andMac-<lb />
Donald would sign a release, agreeing<lb />
not to sue McCiinnis tor libel in the<lb />
event he wrote other than what Mac-<lb />
Donald wanted to see in print.<lb />
The trial was a sensation, and the<lb />
evidence finally conclusive: This doc-<lb />
tor, who had been popular and esteem-<lb />
ed by his friends and associates, had in-<lb />
deed murdered his wife and children.<lb />
McGinniss himself had arrived at the<lb />
same conclusion. The intimate<lb />
knowledge McGinniss had, after hun-<lb />
dreds of hours of association with the<lb />
doctor made for a best-selling book,<lb />
Fatal Vision, followed by a successful<lb />
television movie. As the royalties came<lb />
in, abiding by the agreement. McGin-<lb />
niss sent MacDonald his share - until<lb />
MacDonald brought suit.<lb />
It isn't unusual for authors and<lb />
publishers to get sued by injured par-<lb />
ties, and, accordingly, the publishing<lb />
firm of Putnam took out, at a cost of<lb />
$40,000, an insurance policy with the<lb />
Employers Reinsurance Corp protec-<lb />
ting the publisher, and derivatively the<lb />
author, form legal expenses andadverse<lb />
judgments (with a $25,000 deductible).<lb />
The lawyer of the publisher assured his<lb />
client that it was fully protected.<lb />
Dr. MacDonald, sentenced to prison<lb />
to life, either himself thought up, or else<lb />
was introduced by an ambulance chaser<lb />
to think up, a clever means of getting<lb />
around the release he had given McGin-<lb />
niss. He would sue the author not for<lb />
libel or for invasion of privacy, both of<lb />
which the murderer had immunized<lb />
McGinniss from, but for "fraud<lb />
MacDonald now alleged that McGinniss<lb />
had really misreported what had gone<lb />
on between them, causing him great<lb />
damage and emotional distress.<lb />
Never mind for a moment how it is<lb />
possible to damage the reputaion of a<lb />
man sitting in jail for the balance of his<lb />
life for the crime of killing his family;<lb />
the law is capable of shoving aside such<lb />
considerations, at least for the time be-<lb />
ing. What then happened was that the<lb />
insurance company refused to defend<lb />
McGinniss. Ah, you see, said the<lb />
Employers Reinsurance Corp Mac-<lb />
Donald isn't suing for "libel he is su-<lb />
ing for "fraud<lb />
McGinniss replied as any sane man<lb />
would do. MacDonald. he said, is ob-<lb />
viously suing over what I said in Fatal<lb />
Vision. And the whole purpose of the<lb />
libel policy (what other purpose could it<lb />
have?) is to protect me and the publisher<lb />
from this kind of suit. That he should<lb />
think to call it "fraud" instead of libel<lb />
is purely an act of sematic invention.<lb />
He might as well have sued for aliena-<lb />
tion of affection - there is no question<lb />
that an account of how somei .<lb />

The first is a view of bilingualism as a kind of<lb />
polygamy. If a man gives it to one wife, there's not<lb />
enough left over for someone else. Similarly with<lb />
language: there's only so much room in a person's<lb />
brain, and if he speaks one language really well,<lb />
he'll be all filled up. And if his brain were not a pro-<lb />
blem, his heart would be, since he can be truly loyal<lb />
to only one language.<lb />
In America, it's easy to see why people feel this<lb />
way. Ninety-nine percent of Americans live their<lb />
lives speaking in and thinking about no language<lb />
but English. Foreign-language education has been<lb />
falling off, and except in unusual circumstances <lb />
wars, mainly it has never had much use anyway.<lb />
But suppose that mastering a second language is<lb />
more like having two children. Maybe there's not a<lb />
limit in the brain or heart, and spreading attention<lb />
among several languages like spreading love<lb />
among several children may enrich everyone.<lb />
Without going through the arguments showing that<lb />
bilingualism is possible and natural (one impressive<lb />
recent summary was Mirror of Language by Kenji<lb />
Hakuta), I will merely say that the two-child view<lb />
makes much more sense.<lb />
Everyone has heard about the Scandinavians and<lb />
Swiss, who grow up in a big swirl of languages and<lb />
can talk to anyone. Their example may seem too<lb />
high-toned in connection with today's Spanish-<lb />
speaking immigrants, so consider the more down-<lb />
to-earth illustrations of the multilingualism all over<lb />
Asia.<lb />
Malaysia, a one-time British colony, has three<lb />
ethnic groups: Malays, Chinese and Indians. Each<lb />
speaks a different language at home. But if you put<lb />
any two Malaysians together, it's almost certain<lb />
they'll be able to converse, since most people are<lb />
bilingual and many speak three or more languages.<lb />
I should emphasize that I'm talking about people<lb />
who in no way fit modern America's idea of a<lb />
rarefied intellectual elite. They are wizened Chinese<lb />
shopkeepers, unschooled Indian night guards,<lb />
grubby Malay food-hawkers, in addition to more<lb />
polished characters who've traveled around the<lb />
world. Yet somehow they all find room in their<lb />
brains for more than one language at a time. Is it so<lb />
implausible that Americans can do the same?<lb />
The second anti-bilingual assumption is that<lb />
English is some kind of fragile blossom, about to be<lb />
blown apart by harsh blasts from the Spanish-<lb />
speaking world. Come on! Never before in world<lb />
history has a language been as dominant as English<lb />
is now. In every corner of the world, people realize<lb />
that their chances to make money, have choices or<lb />
travel depend on learning English.<lb />
In Malaysia, in South China, even in linguo-<lb />
phobic Japan, my family's main problem has been<lb />
coping with people who spring from behind every<lb />
tofu stand, eager to practice their English. Malaysia<lb />
ships out tens of thousands of young people each<lb />
year for studies in the United States, Australia and<lb />
England.<lb />
Japan makes many more accomodations to<lb />
English than America does to Spanish.<lb />
Tokyo has four English-language daily newspapers<lb />
more than most American cities. The major train<lb />
and subway routes have English signs. Students ap-<lb />
plying for university admission must pass tests in<lb />
written English. Most shopkeepers, policemen and<lb />
passers-by can make sense of written-down English<lb />
messages. The nighttime TV news broadcasts now<lb />
come in a bilingual version you push a button on<lb />
your set to switch from Japanese to English. It is as<lb />
if the CBS evening news could be simultaneously<lb />
heard in Spanish.<lb />
Does all of this reduce the incentive to learn<lb />
Japanese? Hah! Each day brings reminders of what<lb />
you miss if you don't know the language. You can<lb />
read the mainstream papers, can't follow mosl<lb />
shows on TV, can't communicate above the<lb />
"please-give-me-a-ticket-to-Kyoto" level. Without<lb />
learning the language, you could never hope to win<lb />
a place as anything but a fringe figure.<lb />
The incentives for America's newcomers are<lb />
stronger. How are an immigrant's children to go to<lb />
college, get any kind of white-collar job, live<lb />
anything but a ghetto existence unless they speak<lb />
English? When are the SATs, Bruce Springsteen<lb />
songs and the David Letterman show going to be in<lb />
Spanish - or Korean, or Tagalog? If Malaysians<lb />
and rural Chinese see English as their route to a<lb />
wider world, are Guatemalans and Cubans who've<lb />
made it to America so much more obtuse? And if<lb />
they keep up their Spanish at the same time, whv<lb />
don t we count that as good? It makes their lives<lb />
richer and their minds more flexible, and it enlarge<lb />
the country's ability to deal with the rest of the<lb />
world.<lb />
The adult immigrants don't usually succeed in<lb />
learning English, any more than my wife and I have<lb />
become fluent in Japanese. The Cubans' and Mex<lb />
.cans children are the ones who learn, as previous<lb />
immigrants children have.<lb />
We don't want to become Quebec - and we're<lb />

idents from the sculpture<lb />
department were chosen to do the<lb />
exhibit: Robbie Barber. Roger<lb />
:atore, Meneh Pilkey, Matt<lb />
I no. William Smith and Evan<lb />
Stanford. They call their col-<lb />
laborate e effort "3-D Picture<lb />
Show "<lb />
Quite an appropriate title, as it<lb />
turns out. From the entrance to<lb />
theater, attention is im-<lb />
drawn to the stage,<lb />
jix large screens (about 3<lb />
b 8 feet) stand in front of<lb />
pieces of sculpture. The<lb />
sculptures are brightly lit from<lb />
behind, so their shadows are cast<lb />
onto the screens. From the<lb />
theater seats, only the shadows<lb />
can clearly be seen.<lb />
Interestingly, viewers can walk<lb />
down to the stage and examine<lb />
the works close up, from behind<lb />
the screens. When they do this,<lb />
their shadows<lb />
"We've tried to do something<lb />
that would use the idea of the<lb />
place as a movie theater said<lb />
Stanford. "That's why we used<lb />
the screens<lb />
Although the six artists had on-<lb />
ly three weeks to complete the in-<lb />
stallation from the time they<lb />
found out about it, at least two of<lb />
them (Stanford and Pilkey) con-<lb />
structed their sculptures especial-<lb />
ly for "3-D Picture Show The<lb />
main concept was the work of all<lb />
six heads, however.<lb />
"At first we thought it was go-<lb />
ing to be in a regular gallery<lb />
said Barber. "Then we got here<lb />
and saw it was a real theater. We<lb />
all got together and brainstorm-<lb />
ed there was a lot of tension,<lb />
but we solved the problem so we<lb />
were all happy in the end, which I<lb />
think is kind of rare<lb />
The installation is in several<lb />
ways analogous to a movie. The<lb />
flickering, distorted images of the<lb />
actors are projected onto the<lb />
screen, where they form a two-<lb />
dimensional representation of<lb />
life. Individual actors, each uni-<lb />
que, come together under a uni-<lb />
fying scheme, or plot.<lb />
Though taken separately the<lb />
pieces of sculpture are unique,<lb />
the exhibit as a whole is concep-<lb />
tually unified.<lb />
The integrity and originality of<lb />
"3-D Picture Show" attest to the<lb />
possibility of constructive<lb />
cooperation among individuals,<lb />
as well as between neighboring<lb />
communities. Hopefully, the suc-<lb />
cess of this show will prompt<lb />
more exchanges like it and pro-<lb />
mote greater dialogue on matters<lb />
of significant culture.<lb />
When he was five years old, his<lb />
parents died in a plane crash.<lb />
Before anyone told Eric what<lb />
had happened, he began mimic-<lb />
ing a plane as though he was try-<lb />
ing to save his parents. Since the<lb />
tragedy, he has been obsessed<lb />
with flight.<lb />
The rest of the film deals with<lb />
Milly's efforts to help Eric come<lb />
out of his own world. As was the<lb />
sea captain in Conrad's The<lb />
Secret Sharer, Milly is actually<lb />
helping herself as she works with<lb />
Eric to help him cope with the<lb />
real world.<lb />
On one level, Eric is a<lb />
manifestation of Milly's own<lb />
feelings of loss and disjointment<lb />
in her new surroundings.<lb />
This doppelganger relationship<lb />
is symbolically depicted at one<lb />
point when Eric begins mimicing<lb />
Milly's every move.<lb />
There is a literary allusion to<lb />
Peter Pan very early in the film<lb />
when a falling star shoots bright-<lb />
ly across the sky (a la Tinkerbell).<lb />
Although Eric plays Peter Pan to<lb />
Milly's Wendy, he is actually<lb />
leading her to grow up; just the<lb />
opposite of his literary<lb />
predecessor.<lb />
Actually, they lead each other.<lb />
Both are refusing responsibility<lb />
by living in a never-never land to<lb />
avoid painful reality. Eric has<lb />
closed everyone out and Milly<lb />
refuses to accept that her father<lb />
killed himself; she insists he died<lb />
of cancer.<lb />
The Boy Who Could Fly is<lb />
reminiscent of the classic Jimmy<lb />
Stewart movie, Harvey, in that<lb />
both deal with an individual who,<lb />
because of outlandish claims, is<lb />
considered crazy by the people<lb />
Fred Savage plays Lewis, a disgruntled child who finds escape from his everyday life by pretending he cgn<lb />
fly. The film deals with believing in your dreams and those of others.<lb />
around him.<lb />
In Stewart's case, the claim<lb />
was that he had a giant invisible<lb />
rabbit as his best friend; Eric<lb />
claims he can fly. I won't tell you<lb />
if he can or can not, but the direc-<lb />
tor waits until the last possible<lb />
moment to tip his hand.<lb />
Although the leads were wisely<lb />
given to unknown actors, there<lb />
are a few familiar faces here.<lb />
Mindy Cohn of "The Facts of<lb />
Life" plays an overbearing, ob-<lb />
noxious friend of Milly's. Fred<lb />
Gwyne, best remembered as Her-<lb />
man Munster, plays Eric's<lb />
drunken sod of an uncle.<lb />
I might add that Gwyne strong-<lb />
ly favors Herman, even without<lb />
the green facial makeup (poor<lb />
guy). Bonnie Bedalia plays<lb />
Milly's mom, and Colleen<lb />
Dewhurst gives a good perfor-<lb />
mance as a sympathetic teacher<lb />
Also, look for the cameo of<lb />
film director John Carpenter<lb />
(Halloween) with his band "The<lb />
Coup Devilles" in a music video<lb />
glimpsed briefly during channel<lb />
changing on Milly's TV.<lb />
There's plenty of good craft -<lb />
manship here. The sound of<lb />
windchimes, usually announcing<lb />
Eric's appearances, suggests not<lb />
only flight, but that something<lb />
magical is about to happen<lb />
Also, when Milly walks in on<lb />
her new class in progress, the<lb />
camera takes her viewpoint as<lb />
everyone turns around and looks<lb />
at her. This puts the audience<lb />
members in her place and effec-<lb />
tively conveys her discoml<lb />
The actors are also in<lb />
form, rhe grief of Milly's fai<lb />
over her father's death is .<lb />

Through The Looking Cla<lb />
Love On The Rocks: An Ugly Sight<lb />
By ANDY LEWIS<lb />
SUfrtlf<lb />
It was 4:23 a.m.<lb />
I stood outside the door to<lb />
Carol's room. I knew Steve was<lb />
in there.<lb />
Steve, my best friend, was<lb />
looking pretty rough. He had<lb />
been seeing this girl Carol, and I<lb />
knew he was planning to give her<lb />
up tonight.<lb />
I only met Carol once before.<lb />
She was very affectionate, and<lb />
kept herself surrounded by lots of<lb />
friends particularly guys.<lb />
I knew Steve was doomed. He<lb />
told me he meant more to her<lb />
than all those other guys, but I<lb />
was still afraid he was about to<lb />
get trampled. I could see the foot-<lb />
prints on his face.<lb />
I've never understood why girls<lb />
go for the guys who give them the<lb />
most abuse. But then there's my<lb />
buddy steve, he tends to find girls<lb />
who do that to him.<lb />
I had to risk embarrassment. I<lb />
had to go in and make sure he<lb />
was okay. There had been a par-<lb />
ty; I hoped there were still other<lb />
people in there. I opened the<lb />
door.<lb />
What I saw there made me<lb />
wish I had taken a few shots of<lb />
EverClear beforehand. The floor<lb />
was littered with empty bottles<lb />
and orange juice containers. Two<lb />
girls (neither of them Carol) were<lb />
sitting on the bed where Steve<lb />
lay.<lb />
He looked dead. His limbs<lb />
were twisted about the messy<lb />
sheets and his face was complete-<lb />
ly pale. Footage from The Day<lb />
After couldn't compete with this<lb />
scene.<lb />
He was half mumbling, half<lb />
whining desperate words to the<lb />
girls.<lb />
I didn't know them, but I knew<lb />
that Steve would wish he hadn't<lb />
been born if he kept on emptying<lb />
his soul to these girls who hardly<lb />
knew him.<lb />
"Leave I said quietly, "or<lb />
I'm going to keep a picture of this<lb />
for evidence when you girls get<lb />
charged for raping this poor boy.<lb />
Hell, at this school, you might<lb />
even get a written warning for<lb />
that<lb />
I didn't know if they believed<lb />
me or not, but they left.<lb />
"Jesus Christ, Steve, what<lb />
have they done to you<lb />
I went over to him and sat<lb />
down. His eyes gazed up at me<lb />
without focusing. But suddenly,<lb />
he recognized me and grabbed<lb />
my hand.<lb />
"Andy, thank God you're<lb />
here. Do me a favor, man <lb />
shoot that goddamn mongoose<lb />
whose chewin' on my toes. He's<lb />
been making advances on me all<lb />
night<lb />
"Where's Carol I replied,<lb />
choosing not to deal with his<lb />
hallucinations for the moment.<lb />
He squeezed my hand and said<lb />
sadly, "I don't know. One<lb />
minute she's here. The next<lb />
minute she's not. I wish they had<lb />
a chart for Carol like they do for<lb />
tides. That way I'd know when<lb />
the best surfing was<lb />
He started laughing. But soon<lb />
his laughter turned into light sob-<lb />
bing.<lb />
"You know something, An-<lb />
dy he said wiping his eves.<lb />
"I'm evil<lb />
At this point I became a little<lb />
concerned. I knew that a state-<lb />
ment like this could only mean<lb />
that Steve's self-esteem was not<lb />
quite what it should have been.<lb />
"Steve, why are you saving<lb />
this0"<lb />
"Because love doesn't mean<lb />
the same thing for me as it does<lb />
for everybody else<lb />
I was getting tired, and Steve's<lb />
twisted logic was beginning to<lb />
take its toll.<lb />
"Don't you understand he<lb />
continued, "all I ever get from<lb />
love is pain and yet, I still need<lb />
it. Jesus, Andy, get that damn<lb />
mongoose off my leg or I'm<lb />
never going to speak to you<lb />
again<lb />
"OK Steve. What's the deal.<lb />
Did you tell Carol that you're<lb />
willing to let her go?"<lb />
"Yeah. Of course I did. You<lb />
think I'm a coward or<lb />
something1 Hell, she's going<lb />
marry some military guv<lb />
knows no she car. have security. i<lb />
can understand that. Can<lb />
understand0 '<lb />
"So she told v<lb />
other guy . right? '<lb />
"Yup<lb />
"So you're 01 gonna see her<lb />
anymore, righ?"<lb />
"NO he said angnlv. "She<lb />
still needs me. She told me that. 1<lb />
keep askin' her if she want-<lb />
stop seeing me, but she doe;<lb />
So I'll just wait here until she<lb />
needs me again<lb />
I pulled him so he was sitting<lb />
up. I straightened his collar and<lb />
said. "Steve, you're a mess "<lb />
He smiled and said, "I know,<lb />
but I know that someday she'll<lb />
respect me for hangin' in there.<lb />
Someday. I think I'll just lie here<lb />
a little. Okay Andy? I'll be<lb />
Okay-<lb />
He reached down and slapped<lb />
his leg saying, "Furry bastard<lb />
Then he lay back down on the<lb />
disheveled bed, closing his eves<lb />
I got up and wrote something<lb />
on a sheet of paper that I found<lb />
on her desk. I taped it to his chest<lb />
and quietly left the room.<lb />
I couldn't understand how she<lb />
could have left him there like<lb />
that, but I hoped the sign I left on<lb />
his chest would do some good.<lb />
It read: "Please use with<lb />

Stress On Brain: There's Not An Easy Cure<lb />
B D. A. SWANSON<lb />
What can a poor student do?<lb />
The stress and flu season is upon<lb />
his year with unprecedented<lb />
strength. Not only do the faculty<lb />
seem to be teaming up against us,<lb />
miserable and beaten as we are,<lb />
but all the rest of the great wide<lb />
world is coming down.<lb />
Just the other day I witnessed a<lb />
WZMB newscaster nearly self-<lb />
destruct from an anxiety attack.<lb />
She walked into the classroom,<lb />
threw up her arms, screamed,<lb />
and then sat down mumbling<lb />
something about tranquility and<lb />
the Nicaraguan border or was<lb />
that an automatic gun holder?<lb />
Anyway, she sat there glossy-<lb />
eyed until the relentless professor<lb />
walked in and began to lecture.<lb />
She began taking notes at<lb />
breakneck speed, apparently co-<lb />
pying everything that came out of<lb />
the prof's mouth, despite the<lb />
frantic shaking in her shoulders.<lb />
It was not a pretty sight.<lb />
Maybe I'm just getting older,<lb />
but it seems like in my earlier<lb />
days as an ECU student things<lb />
didn't get so crazy until a week<lb />
before exams. These days things<lb />
just go from bad to worse after<lb />
midterms without ever taking a<lb />
break.<lb />
Another symptom of stress or<lb />
school fatigue has been displayed<lb />
here at The East Carolinian.<lb />
Many staff members can be seen<lb />
darting about in a slightly<lb />
delerious state unable to supress<lb />
quiet, psychotic giggles. The only<lb />
explanation is that they have long<lb />
since bypassed the crying state of<lb />
anxiety.<lb />
A Gray Gallery employee<lb />
recently expressed the root of her<lb />
un-ending stress to me. "As soon<lb />
as one paper is done, another is<lb />
on the drawing board and still<lb />
another needs to be completed<lb />
When asked who was to blame<lb />
for the current state of bedlam,<lb />
she glared at me and almost tore<lb />
my head off. "I've been going<lb />
full steam for three weeks. I<lb />
don't get asked that question<lb />
anymore Then she brushed me<lb />

Situations like these are not<lb />
very uncommon. Most likely you<lb />
are going through this ordeal<lb />
yourself. But what to do? It all<lb />
seems hopeless.<lb />
My old cure for the bug-eyed,<lb />

Nowadays sitting quietly in the<lb />

all the time or energy I can af-<lb />

than the standard four hours of<lb />
sleep that I grudgingly allow<lb />
myself each night.<lb />
Needless to say, the old stress<lb />
monster is getting even more ugly<lb />
than ever. It has even become<lb />
something of a hot topic in the<lb />
wake of the new upward-at-any-<lb />

The Pirate defense, which has<lb />
seen some tough times during the<lb />

holding the Cincinnati Bearcats<lb />
to 19 points Satuday afternoon in<lb />
Ficklen Stadium.<lb />
ECU coach Art Baker, who<lb />
made a defensive backfield<lb />
change, telt the Pirates gained<lb />
some needed confidence on<lb />
defense with Saturday's victory.<lb />
"Our defense played much im-<lb />

"Another big factor (for the<lb />

defense hit hard all day. We<lb />

Indeed the Pirate defense did<lb />

sorry not this year Denny. We<lb />
give the preseason ranking to the<lb />
Hoosiers of Indiana from the Big<lb />
10 conference.<lb />
Don't laugh fool. Indiana will<lb />
probably drop a few games early<lb />
and in the rugged Big 10 race, but<lb />
who wouldn't? But, Bob Knight<lb />
will have his troops ready by<lb />
tournament time.<lb />
For those who still doubt our<lb />
prediction maybe you should<lb />
think back to last year when we<lb />
successfully picked Louisville in<lb />
the preseason Although the Car-<lb />
dinals dropped nine regular-<lb />
reason games, they rocked the<lb />
house in the NCAA tournament.<lb />
The Hoosiers will be paced by<lb />
senior guard supreme Steve<lb />
Alford. It seems like years ago<lb />
when Alford leJ the USA to the<lb />
gold in Los Angeles but he is<lb />
still tickling the twine with long<lb />
range bombs in Bloomington.<lb />
With the new three-point goal (19<lb />
feet, 9 inches) in effect, Alford<lb />
can hit all day long.<lb />
Throw in Ricky Calloway, last<lb />
year's Big 10 freshman of the<lb />
year, and two other returning<lb />
starters, Hoosier fans should get<lb />
their room reservations in New<lb />
Orleans (site of this year's Final<lb />
Four) now.<lb />
The number two spot we fee<lb />
goes to Louisville. Led by last<lb />
year's freshman sensation Pervis<lb />
"Never Nervous" Ellison, the<lb />
Cardinals will surely make<lb />
mincemeat of the Metro Con-<lb />
ference.<lb />
The loss of Billy Thompson<lb />
w ill deny a repeat performance of<lb />
the national title by Louisville,<lb />
however, they will fight till the<lb />
end.<lb />
The Tarheels get our nod foi<lb />
number three. True, they return<lb />
all-world point guard Kenny<lb />
"The Jet" Smith and recruit-of-<lb />
the-year J.R. Reid. but, the loss<lb />
of Brad Daugherty and defensive<lb />
stopper Steve Hale will cause<lb />
some of the thrill to leave Chapel<lb />
Hill.<lb />
The Runnin' Rebels from<lb />
Nevada-Las Vegas claim the fifth<lb />
spot in our illustrious poll, much<lb />
in part to the superb shooting of<lb />
senior guard Freddie Banks<lb />
Don't think Tark the Shark's<lb />
squad is a one man show as<lb />
powerful Armon Gilliam will rule<lb />
Center David Robinson should help Nav remain in the top-twenty of<lb />
college basketball teams this season.<lb />
the paint.<lb />
Number five is also a team<lb />
from this year's conference of the<lb />
year the Big 10. Purdue is our<lb />
choice as they return four starters<lb />
including all-conference center<lb />
Melvin McCants. Troy Lewis will<lb />
greatly benefit from the three<lb />
point range with his downtown<lb />
jumper as the Boilermakers of<lb />
Gene Keady will try to challenge<lb />
Indiana for the conference cham-<lb />
pionship.<lb />
The Kansas Jayhawks behind<lb />
multi-talented Danny Manning<lb />
earn the sixth position. True, the<lb />
Jayhawks lost Ron Kellogg. Greg<lb />
Dreiling and Calvin Thompson,<lb />
they do return steady point guard<lb />
Cedric Hunter and a host of<lb />
talented freshmen. While Larry<lb />
Brown's squad may not make the<lb />
Final Four this year, you can bet<lb />
that the battle cry "Rock, Chalk,<lb />
Jayhawk" will again be heard<lb />
often in Lawrence.<lb />
Number seven goes to SEC<lb />
power Auburn. No doubt, Chuck<lb />
Person will be missed, but the<lb />
Tigers have established a winning<lb />
program under once-maligned<lb />
Sonny Smith. Auburn returns<lb />
Frank Ford and Michael Jones,<lb />
which should be enough to lead<lb />
the Tigers to the SEC champion-<lb />
ship.<lb />
The Wildcats of Kentucky grab<lb />
the eighth spot even though Ken-<lb />
ny "Sky" Walker has left for the<lb />
NBA and Winston Bennett is out<lb />
for the year. The Wildcats do<lb />
return Ed Davender and James<lb />
Blackmon along with freshman<lb />
Rex Chapman, who should make<lb />
a killing from the thre-<lb />
range.<lb />
Without Mark Price and<lb />
Salley, many people thii <lb />

Senior Offensive Line Shares Memories<lb />
B CAROLYN JUSTICE<lb />
Among ECU's list of seniors<lb />
you'll find seven who aren't your<lb />
ordinary group Robert Alex-<lb />
ander, Rich Autry, Ken<lb />
Bourgeois. Shawn Brady, Paul<lb />
Hoggard, Curtis Struyk, and<lb />
Greg Thomas are all offensive<lb />
linemen who call themselves the<lb />
"HOGS<lb />
Standing for "honor our great<lb />
strength it has made a bond<lb />
among these players that the end<lb />
of the season, graduation or<lb />
anything else could never break.<lb />
Five "hogs" began their<lb />
careers here at ECU together in<lb />
1982 with Guilford College<lb />
transfer Curtis Struyk joining<lb />
them in 1983 and Mississippi<lb />
Gulf Coast College transfer Ken<lb />
Bourgeois, coming in for the<lb />
1984 season.<lb />
They share positions and<lb />
rooms as well as memories and<lb />
goals. For all of them, the<lb />
ECU State games are definitely<lb />
the most memorable games.<lb />
Offensive guard Autry said he<lb />
will never forget the police escort<lb />
the team got all the way back<lb />
from Raleigh after the 1983 win.<lb />
Offensive tackle Alexander and<lb />
center Bourgeois enjoyed the<lb />
1985 game because, for both of<lb />
them, it was their first time star-<lb />
ting at ECU. For Hoggard, just<lb />
being able to play in front of all<lb />
those people made it memorable.<lb />
Offensive guardcenter Thomas<lb />
enjoyed beating State for one<lb />
simple reason: "I hate State he<lb />
said.<lb />
Louisiana native Bourgeois<lb />
and offensive tackle Shawn<lb />
Brady, a Pennsylvania native,<lb />
both have memories of their<lb />
chance to play at "home<lb />
"Where I come from said<lb />
Bourgeois, "LSU and Tiger<lb />
Stadium are the big things. I'll<lb />
never forget getting the chance to<lb />
play there (in last year's final<lb />
game)<lb />
"As I was growing up, my Dad<lb />
and I went to a lot of Penn State<lb />
games said Brady. "I always<lb />
dreamed of playing there, and<lb />
now I've been given the chance<lb />
Tackle Struyk, like all of the<lb />
"hogs takes his job very<lb />
seriously, and when he's on the<lb />
field he means business. But like<lb />
the rest, he has his share of amus-<lb />
ing moments.<lb />
"This year at Temple, I was<lb />
late coming out of the locker<lb />
room at the half because 1 was<lb />
hurt Struyk said. "As I came<lb />
out, the Temple fans were yelling<lb />
at me about being hurt, so I<lb />
started jogging on to the field, ac-<lb />
ting like there was nothing<lb />
wrong. I slipped and fell fiat on<lb />
my face. To make things worse, I<lb />
looked up and they had me on the<lb />
stadium's big TV screen<lb />
Mention falling to Alexander<lb />
and he'll laugh as he tells about<lb />
former coach Ed Emory. "Coach<lb />
Emory was watching drills at<lb />
practice. He was walking<lb />
backwards, not looking where he<lb />
was going and he fell over a pile<lb />
of dummies Alexander explain-<lb />
ed. "His feet flew up in the air<lb />
and everyone was afraid to laugh.<lb />
He got up, looked at us and said:<lb />
'If you see something that fun-<lb />
ny, you ought to laugh! So<lb />
everyone just cracked up<lb />
Autry remembers falling down<lb />
at practice or actually, it was be-<lb />
ing knocked down. "I thought I<lb />
was gonna be bad and knock<lb />
Terry Long down when I went up<lb />
on the line Autry said. "He<lb />
brought me back down to earth<lb />
after he knocked me back about<lb />
five yards<lb />
Cold weather reminds Brady of<lb />
one particular cold, embarrassing<lb />
practice. "We weren't given any<lb />
sweats, so I wore the only shirt<lb />
that I had brought with me out to<lb />
practice. It was a red flannel<lb />
shirt Brady remembered.<lb />
"Coach Emory voted me 'best<lb />
dressed' player of the day<lb />
For Bourgeois, one practice<lb />
will always come to mind when<lb />
talking about embarrassment.<lb />
"On my first day as starting<lb />
center, we went into the huddle<lb />
and coach 'Z' (John Zernhelt)<lb />
told me 'third down As center, I<lb />
was supposed to call the down,<lb />
but I was so nervous that I<lb />
forgot.<lb />
"He said 'say it Bourg, say it<lb />
1 thought he was trying to get me<lb />
fired up, so I started yelling 'All<lb />
right! Let's go said Bourgeois.<lb />
"Coach 'Z' said, 'No Bourg, call<lb />
third down I was so embarrass-<lb />
ed. Then when we lined up, no<lb />
one could keep a straight face<lb />
and everyone was snickering<lb />
Hoggard was nervous on his<lb />
first plane ride with the team and<lb />
it's something that he'll never<lb />
forget. "We were flying to<lb />
Florida and I was sitting between<lb />
former teammates Norman<lb />
Quick and John Floyd Hog-<lb />
gard recalled. "The plane hit<lb />
some turbulence and that scared<lb />
me. Then those two starting pray-<lb />
ing to God not to let us die. I<lb />
started praying too because I was<lb />
scared<lb />
As the season comes to an end,<lb />
all are looking towards the<lb />
future. Brady, a construction ma-<lb />

sylvania He has reached one<lb />
goal, the chance to play college<lb />
football. Because of his interests<lb />
in politics, his next goal is to<lb />
become a Senator.<lb />
Struyk's goal ; to play profes-<lb />

the "hogs they plan to teach<lb />

Kruger because of his wildness<lb />
and aggressiveness, Thomas<lb />
dreams of a medical career while<lb />
his immediate dream is for a<lb />
good game against Miami. He<lb />
said that's one thing he's learned<lb />
about playing football. "It<lb />
doesn't matter if it's a big name<lb />
school, it's the team that's most<lb />
prepared that's gonna win said<lb />
Thomas.<lb />
These years at ECU have been<lb />
special to the "hogs According<lb />
to Hoggard. he wouldn't have<lb />
traded it "for anvthing in the<lb />
world<lb />
Alexander probably said it best<lb />
when he summed up what being a<lb />
"hog" has meant to him. "Being<lb />

The Crimson Tide of Alabama<lb />
return premier shot-blocker Der-<lb />
rick McKey from the goldmedal<lb />
world championship team and<lb />
receive our vote for the 12th posi-<lb />
tion The Tide also have point-<lb />
niard Terry Coner in their<lb />
arsenal and should be in the thick<lb />
of the SEC race.<lb />
After waiting for super stars<lb />
Patrick Ewing and Walter Berry<lb />
to depart the Big East con-<lb />
ference, Pittsburgh will now have<lb />
a chance to prove their worth.<lb />
nd prove it they should as they<lb />
earn the lucky 13th spot. With<lb />
Charles Smith, Demetreus Gore<lb />
and Curtis Aiken. first-year<lb />
coach Paul Evans (former Navy<lb />
coach) will have the talent to<lb />
ossibry once again lead a team<lb />
to the final eight.<lb />
The 14th team, Iowa, is the Big<lb />
10's third representative in our<lb />
poll. Returning for the<lb />
Hawkeye's is Gerry "Sir Jam-A-<lb />
ot" Wright, Roy Marble and Al<lb />
: orenzen. The Hawkeye's only<lb />
major concern heading into the<lb />
reason will be the difficulty of<lb />
their schedule.<lb />
The ACC's third represen-<lb />
tative, Clemson, makes it's en-<lb />
hance in our poll at the number<lb />
15 position. The Tigers, who had<lb />
i great recruiting year, return<lb />
THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb />
NOVEMBER 20. 1986<lb />
Horace Grant, Grayson Marshall<lb />
and Anthony Jenkins. Add<lb />
Syracuse transfer Michael Brown<lb />
and the Tigers could surprise<lb />
some people on Tobacco Road.<lb />
Although talented guard Steve<lb />
Kerr suffered an off-season knee<lb />
jury in the World Champion-<lb />
snips, Lute Olson and his<lb />
Arizona Wildcats are number 16.<lb />
Sean Elliott, a rising talent at for-<lb />
ward, should be enough to boost<lb />
the Wildcats to the Pac-10 cham-<lb />
pionship.<lb />
At number 17, (out of respect<lb />
lor Marketing whiz John<lb />
AlthofO is the Fightin'IUini of Il-<lb />
linois. The return of Doug<lb />
Altenberger from injury and<lb />
senior center Ken Norman along<lb />
with seven highly touted<lb />
freshmen make Lou Hensen's<lb />
squad a force to be reckoned<lb />
with.<lb />
The surprise of the poll (for<lb />
now anyway) is Duke who gains<lb />
our vote for number 18. The Blue<lb />
Devils, although without the ser-<lb />
vices of Dawkins, Alarie,<lb />
Henderson and Bilas, are still<lb />
gonna give the ACC foes fits.<lb />
Duke returns Tommy Amaker,<lb />
Danny Ferry, Billy King, Kevin<lb />
Strickland and Quin Snyder.<lb />
They easily handled the tourin'<lb />
squad from the Soviet Union this<lb />
year. We guess Duke coach Mike<lb />
Krzyzewski scored a victory for<lb />
the Polish with the win over the<lb />
Commies.<lb />
At number 19 is Notre Dame.<lb />
Head coach Digger Phelps will<lb />
have no worries at the point<lb />
guard spot with the return of<lb />
speedy David Rivers. The Irish<lb />
also will have the services of<lb />
prep-all america Keith Robinson.<lb />
The final spot in the poll goes<lb />
to the Hurricanes of Miami, Fl.<lb />
With leading scorer Eric Brown<lb />
coming back along with all five<lb />
starters and the addition of the<lb />
much-travelled Tito Horford,<lb />
look for the Hurricanes to make<lb />
waves before the season is over.<lb />
