SGA Seeks Cabinet<lb />
Member Applications<lb />

There are currently five posi-<lb />
tions open in the Students<lb />
Government Association<lb />
Cabinet�positions that Steve<lb />
Cunanan, SGA president,want s<lb />
to fill within the next week.<lb />
"The basic purpose of cabinet<lb />
members is to get information<lb />
and bring it to the attention of<lb />
the SGA officers and<lb />
legislaturehe said.<lb />
The positions include<lb />
Secretaries of Minority Affairs,<lb />
Traffic and Safety, Academic Af-<lb />
fairs, Community and Consumer<lb />
Affairs, and Student Affairs.<lb />
The Secretary of Minority Af-<lb />
fairs, according to Cunanan, will<lb />
come into contact with all<lb />
minority organizations on cam-<lb />
pus, and "make sure the SGA<lb />
gets all of the information it<lb />
needs<lb />
The Secretary of Traffic and<lb />
Safety will serve on some of the<lb />
faculty-student committees, such<lb />
as the parking and sexual assault<lb />
awareness committees.<lb />
"Seeing that the students'<lb />
needs are being met here at the<lb />
university" is the purpose of the<lb />
person holding the position of<lb />
Secretary of Academic Affairs,<lb />
said Cunanan. This person will<lb />
also serve on several faculty-<lb />
student committees.<lb />
The Secretary of Student Af-<lb />
fairs will cover anything students<lb />
feel interested in, he said. "For<lb />
example, I know there's been talk<lb />
about cleaning up campus. It<lb />
would be this person's job to do<lb />
the research on it<lb />
Lastly, the Secretary of Com-<lb />
munityConsumer Affairs will be<lb />
in close contact with the SGA at-<lb />
torney, dealing with situations in<lb />
which students feel taken advan-<lb />
tage of, for example, by Green-<lb />
ville merchants or apartment<lb />
owners.<lb />
The only requirements, said<lb />
Cunanan. are a genuine interest<lb />
in student issues and the en-<lb />
thusiasm to work. "I would like<lb />
these people to go at it with the<lb />
same enthusiasm everyone else in<lb />
the SGA does he said. There<lb />
are no GPA requirements, he ad-<lb />
ded.<lb />
Students interested in applying<lb />
for any of these positions may do<lb />
so in room 228 Mendenhall bet-<lb />
ween 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.<lb />

The night transit bus, which<lb />
had been provided for ECU<lb />
students for over a year, was ter-<lb />
minated this year by the SGA Ex-<lb />
ecutive Council.According to<lb />
Brennen Collins, Transit<lb />
manager, the night transit was an<lb />
effort to prevent drinking and<lb />
driving.<lb />
Collins said the SGA decided<lb />
to terminate the service in<lb />
September because not enough<lb />
people were using the transit.<lb />
"The service worked in the<lb />
past, but the change in the drink-<lb />
ing age effected the project this<lb />
semester said Collins. "One<lb />
weekend only about twenty peo-<lb />
ple rode the buses<lb />
The buses picked up students<lb />
in the parking lot across from<lb />
Chico's from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m.<lb />
Service Terminated<lb />
The transits routes included Col-<lb />
lege Hill Drive, and most area<lb />
apartments.<lb />
"I believe if there is still some<lb />
interest in night transit that it<lb />
could work said Collins.<lb />
But, some students' opinions<lb />
of the "drunk bus as the night<lb />
transit is commonly known,<lb />
varied.<lb />
Tim Bowman said, "the buses<lb />
might use some of the SGA<lb />
money, but it could save some<lb />
lives in the long run<lb />
"I am against the drunk<lb />
buses said Eric Floyd. "The<lb />
only people who would probably<lb />
ride them would be those who are<lb />
to drunk to be disgraced<lb />
According to David Kornegay,<lb />
SGA money could be better<lb />
spentThe idea is good, but the<lb />
timing is wrong due to the change<lb />
in the drinking age<lb />

With all of the heavy cutbacks<lb />
in federal financial aid programs,<lb />
students are turning more to<lb />
private sources to aid in financing<lb />
their college education.<lb />
Higher Education Scholarship<lb />
Consultants is a nationwide ref-<lb />
feral service between students<lb />
and approximately 50,000<lb />
sources that assist students in fin-<lb />
ding information about awards.<lb />
There are over one billion<lb />
dollars available in private sector<lb />
scholarships, fellowships, grants<lb />
and loans.<lb />
A wide variety of scholarships,<lb />
many of which are not based on<lb />
the applicants financial need, are<lb />
also available.<lb />
Higher Education Scholarship<lb />
Consultants was established to<lb />
give an up-to-date accessible<lb />
source of information on normal-<lb />
ly hard to find awards.<lb />
"Higher Education Scholar-<lb />
ship Consultants is here to pro-<lb />
vide another sourcE of financial<lb />
aid to students said Scott Gard-<lb />
ner, president of Higher Educa-<lb />
tion Scholarship Consultants.<lb />
In addition to these valuable<lb />
financial aid sources. Higher<lb />
Education Scholarship Con-<lb />
sultants provides information on<lb />
internship programs, career<lb />
guidance materials, career pro-<lb />
jections and study tips.<lb />
To use the service, a studen'<lb />
must fill out a detailed question-<lb />
naire of all relevant information<lb />
including field(s) of study, family<lb />
history, group affiliations, etc.<lb />
Each applicant will receive a<lb />
refferal list that includes sources<lb />
offering financial assistance, ad-<lb />
ditional reference sources, in<lb />
structions on applying for<lb />
scholarship funds, internship<lb />
programs in the students major<lb />
field(s) of interest and at the ap-<lb />
plicants option, career guidance<lb />
material. It is then up to the stu-<lb />
dent to apply to the funding<lb />
sources.<lb />
The cost is S40 for an<lb />
undergraduate or graduate<lb />
search. The $40 will be refunded<lb />
if not at least 8 sources are found<lb />
for the applicant. Career<lb />

committee, we as faculty don't<lb />

Speaker of the legislature, Ben<lb />
Eckert, called attention to the<lb />
fact that the SGA may be ap-<lb />
propriating money to campus<lb />
organizations without really<lb />
understanding where that money<lb />
is going after the SGA passed six<lb />
out of eight bills brought before<lb />
them at Monday night's meeting.<lb />
According to David Tambling,<lb />
SGA secretary, by passing those<lb />
bills, $1,995 out of the SGA's<lb />
$25,000 budget was appropriated<lb />
by the legislature.<lb />
"It scares me that we represent<lb />
the students and we don't even<lb />
know what's happening said<lb />
Eckert. "When we approve ap-<lb />
propriations, we need to find out<lb />
if that group is the one that can<lb />
best use the money. If it is, fine.<lb />
If not, it is up to us to find out<lb />
who is and make sure that they<lb />
get it<lb />
He added, "This (serving on<lb />
the legislature) is not for a<lb />
resume. It is for the students. We<lb />
need to know what's going<lb />
on�we don't want to pass or fail<lb />
something that will come back to<lb />
us as not having been the best<lb />
way the money could have been<lb />
used<lb />
Tambling agreed, stating,<lb />
"People come in here and they<lb />
get elected to their positions. But<lb />
they sit, they watch, and they do<lb />
nothing. If you're elected to a<lb />
position, you must go looking for<lb />
information and learn some of<lb />
the procedures on your own. You<lb />
can't expect to be handed<lb />
everything<lb />
Elmer Meyer, vice chancellor<lb />
for Student Life said that it<lb />
works both ways. "The commit-<lb />
tee people should be making the<lb />
legislature more aware of what is<lb />
in a bill so they know exactly<lb />
where the money is goingand if<lb />
they don't, then questions should<lb />
be asked<lb />
It was also suggested at the<lb />
meeting that students who have<lb />
questions about where the money<lb />
is going can attend the appropria-<lb />
tions committee meetings<lb />
The bills that were approved<lb />
included an amended budget for<lb />
the Graduate Student Associa-<lb />
tion of Social Workers, which<lb />
was debated before it's approval,<lb />
appropriations to the Marching<lb />
Pirates and the International<lb />
Language Organization.<lb />
The legislature approved the<lb />
constitution of the Rugby Foot-<lb />
ball Club, the Industrial Arts<lb />
Honor Fraternity, the Interna-<lb />
tional Geography Honor Society,<lb />
and a change in the constitution<lb />
of the East Carolina Student<lb />
Club of Occupational Therapists<lb />
Association.<lb />
Appropriations for the An-<lb />
thropology Honor Society were<lb />
put on the unfavorable calendar.<lb />
The only debate that preceeded<lb />
the approval of any of the bills<lb />
revolved around the appropria-<lb />
tions for the Graduate Student<lb />
Association of Social Workers.<lb />
Bryan Lassiter, member of the<lb />
leglislature, who ended up voting<lb />
in favor of the appropriations,<lb />
questioned the money that would<lb />
go toward advertising ($50).<lb />
A representative of that group,<lb />
David Arney, explained that<lb />
March was National Social Work<lb />
Month, and that the appropria-<lb />
tions would be "put toward help-<lb />
ing to advertise that week and the<lb />
organizations activities<lb />

Early Registration<lb />
Students, Newspaper Get The Shaft<lb />
Business is business, but getting<lb />
the shaft is another story entirely.<lb />
That's just what this newspaper,<lb />
along with the student body, got<lb />
from the Registrar's office w:hen it<lb />
came to The East Carolinian's<lb />
'1986 Early Registration Issue<lb />
For years this newspaper has<lb />
been the source of the Earlv<lb />
Registration Issue, the semesterlv<lb />
issue containing a directory of class<lb />
schedules. And for years'we have<lb />
been publishing it at no charge to<lb />
the students or administration.<lb />
That is, until now. It seems the<lb />
Registrar's offke, unsatisfied with<lb />
our free service, has chosen to have<lb />
the class schedules printed<lb />
elsewhere.<lb />
What will this mean for the<lb />
students and the university? First<lb />
and foremost, a cost of several<lb />
thousand dollars. Instead of having<lb />
The East Carolinian (an entirely<lb />
student run publication) print the<lb />
schedules for free, the Registrar's<lb />
office chose to spend 5X800 of<lb />
university money to have both the<lb />
fall and spring issues done by a pro-<lb />
fessional printer.<lb />
What's worse, they chose to<lb />
spend that money with a New<lb />
Jersey firm. So, not only is our<lb />
money paying for something we can<lb />
get for free, but that money is being<lb />
fed into another state's economy.<lb />
The problem started last May<lb />
when Gil Moore. ECU Registrar,<lb />
and Tom Luvender, General<lb />
Manager of The East Carolinian,<lb />
met to discuss this year's Early<lb />
Registration issues. Present at the<lb />
meeting was David Rosenbloom,<lb />
Vice President of University Com-<lb />
munications, a New Jersey printing<lb />
company.<lb />
According to Luvender, Moore<lb />
was dissatisfied with the last Early<lb />
Registration issue and had begun<lb />
looking into the possibility of going<lb />
to another publishing source, thus<lb />
RosenblO'm's presence. During the<lb />
course of the meeting, Moore sug-<lb />
gested that Luvender and<lb />
Rosenbloom team up.<lb />
Luvender and Rosenbloom then<lb />
held a separate meeting in the of-<lb />
fices of The East Carolinian. At<lb />
that time, Rosenbloom offered<lb />
Luvender a 60 40 split. The plan<lb />
was for The East Carolinian to sell<lb />
the advertisements and University<lb />
print the<lb />
Communications to<lb />
schedules.<lb />
Luvender declined the offer<lb />
knowing full well that The East<lb />
Carolinian could realize a better<lb />
return, at no charge to the students,<lb />
if we printed the issue ourselves.<lb />
When the meeting ended, nothing<lb />
was finalized.<lb />
However, two weeks later, the<lb />
ECU Purchasing Dept. sent notices<lb />
to several printing companies<lb />
soliciting bids for the issues. The<lb />
East Carolinian was never con-<lb />
tacted. University Communications<lb />
won the bid.<lb />
Why? The anwser is unclear; in<lb />
tact, this is where questions<lb />
abound. The Registrar's office<lb />
claims the Purchasing Dept. was to<lb />
blame. The Purchasing Dept on<lb />
the other hand, says the Registrar's<lb />
office gave orders to omit The East<lb />
Carolinian from the bidding pro-<lb />
cess.<lb />
Now for the questions: Why<lb />
didn't we receive a bidding notice?<lb />
If the Purchasing Dept's story is<lb />
true, why wouldn't the Registrar's<lb />
office want us to know about the<lb />
bid? And finally, if the decision to<lb />
solicit bids hadn't been decided on,<lb />
much less the bids themselves<lb />
finalized, then when Luvender<lb />
spoke to Rosenbloom at the second<lb />
meeting, how could University<lb />
Communications offer The East<lb />
Carolinian a 6040 split?<lb />
The answers to these questions<lb />
have been eluding this newspaper<lb />
since May. All we do know is that<lb />
The East Carolinian, the newspaper<lb />
of the student body, stood to loose<lb />
$8,000 in revenue if we did nothing.<lb />
We saw this as a loss for the<lb />
students and the university as well<lb />
as for the paper. Luvender,<lb />
however, refused to stand for it.<lb />
On Thursday of this week, The<lb />
East Carolinian will release its own<lb />
Early Registration Issue. It will be<lb />
produced by the students, and in<lb />
the name of the students.<lb />
As Luvender puts it, "We have<lb />
no choice but to stand up for<lb />
ourselves and do what we feel is<lb />
right<lb />
We ask you now to support The<lb />
East Carolinian's Early Registra-<lb />
tion Issue, and those merchants<lb />
who placed their faith in this stu-<lb />
dent run newspaper.<lb />

Risky: To Cheat Or Not To Cheat<lb />

So, you've waited until the morning<lb />
of your midterm to begin studying and<lb />
now you have only two hours before the<lb />
big test that will count 50 percent of<lb />
your final grade. Vou know that you<lb />
cannot possibly cram all of the<lb />
necessary information into your head in<lb />
that short amount of time, and you<lb />
can't drop the class because your<lb />
parents would kill you. So do you studs<lb />
as much as you can and pray that the<lb />
professor puts a 90-point curve on the<lb />
grades, or do you take another<lb />
alternative-cheating?<lb />
Sometimes students take that road to<lb />
dishonesty by deciding that they<lb />
couldn't possibly get caught. So they<lb />
make out that major cheat sheet or<lb />
write answers on their arms or anything<lb />
to keep them from having to really learn<lb />
the material. But what happens to those<lb />
students who get caught for cheating at<lb />
East Carolina University?<lb />
Cheating is one of four Academic In-<lb />
tegrity Violations that can result in<lb />
some severe consequences. Last year. 15<lb />
students were "reported for cheating.<lb />
However, many more were probably<lb />
caught and held accountable by their<lb />
professor. Those who were reported,<lb />
were either given an "F" for the course<lb />
or for the paper, test or project.<lb />
Let's use a fictitious person, John J.<lb />
to describe what would happen if so-<lb />
meone were caught for cheating at<lb />
ECU.<lb />
If a classmate sees John J. cheating,<lb />
they have the option of reporting it to<lb />
the professor, Department Chairperson<lb />
or member of the Academic Integrity<lb />
Board. If the professor catches John<lb />
cheating, they must summon him to an<lb />
interview within 3 class days after the<lb />
alleged violation has taken place.<lb />
John J. and the professor may each<lb />
have a non-participating observer at the<lb />
interview. The faculty observer should<lb />
be the Dean or Chairperson of the<lb />
Department or Associate Dean of the<lb />
School. John may choose another stu-<lb />
dent or faculty member as he wishes.<lb />
These observers are to watch the pro-<lb />
cedures unbiasedly and be prepared to<lb />
testify in the event of an appeal of the<lb />
judgment of the teacher.<lb />
During the interview, the faculty<lb />
member must present evidence in sup-<lb />
port of the charges against John. After<lb />
hearing the student, the faculty member<lb />
may give John an "F" in the course or<lb />
take other appropriate action. If so, the<lb />
action taken will be reported to Dr. Ron<lb />
Speier, Associate Dean of Students.<lb />
After the first interview is over and if<lb />
the professor feels that failing John is<lb />
inadequate disciplinary action, he may<lb />
turn the whole case over to the<lb />
Academic Integrity Board. Then a new<lb />
hearing will be held without regard to<lb />
the findings in the initial interview.<lb />
The Academic Integrity Board will<lb />
follow the hearing procedures establish-<lb />
ed by the University Honor Board, and<lb />
a majority of the Board will decide the<lb />
issue. The Chairperson shall vote only<lb />
in the case of a tie. Then John and the<lb />
professor will be notified of the decision<lb />
of the Board.<lb />
If the evidence is insufficient to sus-<lb />
tain charges against John, in order to<lb />
protect both the student and the pro-<lb />
fessor, continuation of the class must be<lb />
resolved by the Dean or Department<lb />
Chairperson.<lb />
On the other hand, if the evidence is<lb />
sufficient to support the charges, then<lb />
the Board may impose a charge of giv-<lb />
ing John an "F" for the course, suspen-<lb />
ding or dismissing John from the<lb />
University, or taking any other action<lb />
appropriate with the findings.<lb />
One point to make is that John has<lb />
the option to appeal the Board's deci-<lb />
sion at any time. If he wishes to do -his<lb />
he would appeal to Elmer Meyer,<lb />
Chancellor of Student Life.<lb />
Now, after examining she conse-<lb />
quences that can and will follow getting<lb />
caught for cheating, would vou try and<lb />
cram for that midterm at the las:<lb />
minute, or make out a cheat sheet0<lb />
Personally, I wouldn't have to think<lb />
about it long. I would rather studv for<lb />
:he little time that I had and settle for a<lb />

Reagan Right To Keep Star Wars<lb />
Editorial Columnist Wanted:<lb />
The East Carolinian is presently seeking a conservative columnist<lb />
to present views in opposition to the liberal column, "From The<lb />
Left. Applicants must be well versed in both national and cam-<lb />
pus politics. A writing sample is required<lb />
The disappointing failure of the Iceland summit mav bring<lb />
the debate over "Star Wars or the Strategic Defense In-<lb />
itiative, to new levels. At one point, the summit appeared to<lb />
be destined for the history books, but President Reagan and<lb />
General Secretary Gorbachev were unable to reach any kind<lb />
of agreement over SDI, so for now the world will have to wait<lb />
and see if long-range missiles and bomber arsenals will ever be<lb />
reduced by one-half. The possible elimination of all but 100<lb />
medium range missiles from both countries will also have to<lb />
wait.<lb />

doesn't like to "get involved Perhaps<lb />
you'd like to say something, but, then<lb />
again, who'd listen?<lb />
The Campus Forum, otherwise known<lb />
as letters to the editor, provides for a vir-<lb />
tual marketplace for your ideas, helping<lb />
students voice their opinions on the vital<lb />
issues of concern on campus. Space will be<lb />
made available for all letters, provided the<lb />
following guidelines are observed:<lb />
�All letters must be typed or neatly<lb />
handwritten and double-spaced on clean<lb />
white paper;<lb />
�Letters must not exceed two pages;<lb />
�Letters must focus on a pertinent issue<lb />
of concern � no personal attacks will be<lb />
permitted;<lb />
�All letters must be signed by the<lb />
author;<lb />
�Author's address, phone number, ma-<lb />
jor and classification must be included so<lb />
that letters may be verified;<lb />
�Students are limited to one letter every<lb />
two weeks;<lb />
�All letters are subject to editing for<lb />
style, grammar, libel and clarity, and<lb />
�Deadline for turning in letters is 5 p.m.<lb />
on Fridays for the Tuesday issue and 5<lb />

So, don't just sit back and complain;<lb />
take action. Granted, a letter won't move<lb />
mountains. But, then again, it just might<lb />
be the first step towards getting something<lb />
done.<lb />
Why? The United States and the Soviet Union appear to<lb />
have completely differing views regarding a space defense<lb />
system from nuclear missiles. President Reagan believes that<lb />
SDI could eventually make nuclear weapons obsolete by com-<lb />
pletely eliminating their threat. Mr. Gorbachev claims that<lb />
SDI is only an attempt by the Reagan administration to gain<lb />
military superiority and make a historic technilogical<lb />
breakthrough.<lb />
Few people have trouble believing President Reagan's<lb />
sincerity regarding SDI, but Mr. Gorbachev's reaction is very<lb />
interesting, and indeed, very puzzling. Gorbachev has stated<lb />
many times that SDI cannot succeed and will develop into a<lb />
great failure. If so, why does he take such a strong stand<lb />
against SDI? It would seem that if he really thought it was<lb />
destined for failure, he would be glad to let Reagan spend<lb />
millions and billions of dollars on the system, for that would<lb />
work to the Soviet's advantage. Obviously, something about<lb />
SDI really bothers Gorbachev.<lb />
It may be that he believes that SDI could increase the<lb />
chances of nuclear disaster, but it could also be because he<lb />
sees SDI possibly giving the United States a strong military<lb />
advantage. Whatever the reason, the Soviet Premier stuck to<lb />
his guns, Reagan did the same, and the talks are dead.<lb />
Is SDI worth it? In order for it to work perfectly, or make<lb />
missiles obsolete, a leak proof system would have to be<lb />
designed. To be effective, SDI must be survivable and it must<lb />
be "cost effective at the margin To be survivable, a space<lb />
shield must be able to survive a pre-emptive attack. If an<lb />
enemy launched his missiles and knocked out the entire space<lb />
defense system, it would be worthless. "Cost effective at the<lb />
margin" means it must be cheaper to add new defenses than<lb />
to build new offensive systems.<lb />
SDI may not be able to survive a direct attack. It could be<lb />
easily damaged by anti-satellite weapons and space mines<lb />
According to the 1984 report of the Defensive Technologies<lb />
study team, which was chaired by James Fletcher, the head of<lb />
NASA, an effective space shield would have to be developed<lb />
with several different layers of weapons, all of which take<lb />
shots in sequence at incoming ballistic missiles. Each laver is<lb />
responsible for the different phases of a missile launch These<lb />
phases include the boost phase, when rocket engines present a<lb />
. bright target; the post-boost phase, when the vehicle is<lb />
dispensing its load of re-entry-vehicles (RV's) which are top-<lb />
ped with warheads; the 20 minute coasting phase, which is<lb />
when RV s can be hidden in a cloud of decoys; and the last<lb />
phase, when the RV's go through the atmosphere to their<lb />
targets at several kilometers per second.<lb />
This system leaves the possibility for manv problems<lb />
however. If one layer is over loaded, the entire system would<lb />
collapse, since it depends on the layers working in sequence<lb />
The system would probably be designed according to the<lb />
arsenal the U.S. thought an enemy could launch but if U S<lb />
estimates were inaccurate due to violations of an'arms treats<lb />
or the intentional escalation of missile stockpiles, then a space<lb />
shield might not be built strong enough to handle an attack<lb />
No doubt, any enemy would do anything to try and throw off<lb />
a space shield. Communications between the hard<lb />
waresoftware of different layers in a space shield are critical-<lb />
ly important, and any interruption could throw off the entire<lb />
system. Also, there is no guarantee that each laver would have<lb />
enough time to identify incoming missiles.<lb />
Based on the report of the Defensive Technologies studv<lb />
team a space shield that could survive a pre-emptive strike<lb />
would be very difficult. ,f not impossible, to develop. Would<lb />
the system be cheaper to develop than offensive missiles Pro<lb />
bablv not since SDI research alone is calling for m l! ons of<lb />
dollars. Also, the construction and deployment of such a<lb />
system would most definently cost millions more.<lb />
In conclusion, SDI is still, for the most part, a proposal<lb />
and few people would advocate ending all research. S2ET<lb />
ly, a great deal more needs to be learned, especially when a<lb />
space shield might not be like what James Fletcher's studv<lb />
team described. For this reason, President Reagan waspro-<lb />
bably right not to let Gorbachev negotiate awl SI<lb />
Research should be continued, but it should be watched<lb />
cautiously, taking into consideration that the Presidents mt<lb />

The Season Of Ghostly Stories Has Arrived<lb />

There you are. I've been<lb />
wailing for you.<lb />
A bit chilly this evening, eh?<lb />
Around the neighborhood, pum-<lb />
pkins have sprouted from cement<lb />
porches; grimacing jack-o-<lb />
lanterns lick their rotting mouths<lb />
with tongues of fire. Sssh. You<lb />
can hear their rustling cackle. A<lb />
few brittle leaves � dead things<lb />
� are scraping across the<lb />
driveway.<lb />
Enter freely and of your own<lb />
will. You want to talk about<lb />
fright? About what reallv scares<lb />
you?<lb />
The Wolfman? You laugh.<lb />
You say Lon Chanev, Jr. looks<lb />
like he has a rug stuck on his<lb />
face. The Creature? "Forget it<lb />
vou chuckle. "1 can seethe zipper<lb />
a mile away<lb />
Wait a minute. Look. See.<lb />
What about what you can't see?<lb />
Ah. That's a different story. A<lb />
ghost story.<lb />
I'll paraphrase Peter Struab. 1<lb />
won't tell you the scariest thing<lb />
that happened to me, but I'll tell<lb />
you the scariest thing that could<lb />
happen to me.<lb />
And maybe you.<lb />
A wind-swept country road on<lb />
an October night. The traveler<lb />
docs not know how long he's<lb />
been driving. Time isn't the same<lb />
out here when the sun goes down.<lb />
And the car clock is stuck at one<lb />
minute after twelve. The traveler<lb />
flicks the car light on to check his<lb />
watch and flicks it off again.<lb />
Only fifteen minutes. He was<lb />
sure it had been an hour! A very<lb />
long ride ahead.<lb />
Suddenly, the headlights flare<lb />
on a small form of white and<lb />
gold. A fallen angel? No! A little<lb />
girl. Alone out here?<lb />
His foot grapples for the<lb />
brake; the night wind catches the<lb />
tires' screech and stretches it out<lb />
like a scream from hell. He opens<lb />
the door; the red gaze of the<lb />
brakelights burns holes in the<lb />
night.<lb />
"What's wrong, honey?"<lb />
"I'm scared, mister. I'm<lb />
scared and I'm cold. I want to go<lb />
home. Take me home<lb />
"Sure, honey, sure He takes<lb />
her hand, a fistfull of snow in the<lb />
lingering Indian summer night.<lb />
He takes her inside the car and<lb />
drapes his coat about her.<lb />
"Where do you live?"<lb />
She stares ahead. "The first<lb />
house you come to. On the left<lb />
The traveler tries to ask her<lb />
questions, but his small passenger<lb />
remains distant. He doesn't<lb />
mind.<lb />
Finally, there is the house. He<lb />
pulls into the driveway. It is a<lb />
very ancient house. He turns to<lb />
his passenger.<lb />
She is gone.<lb />
The girl, his coat gone. He is<lb />
alone.<lb />
Alone at the house.<lb />
Or is he? He gets out of the car<lb />
but leaves the headlights on. The<lb />
wooden porch sounds old and<lb />
hollow under foot. He knocks. A<lb />
rattle, and the door opens slight-<lb />
ly.<lb />
A very wrinkled face stares<lb />
out. The eyes are glazed with<lb />
fear. He quickly explains, and the<lb />
fear in the eyes melts into a far<lb />
away look.<lb />
"Yes the woman's voice<lb />
cracks. "That was my little girl,<lb />
Sally. She was killed on this<lb />
stretch of road a long time ago.<lb />
She is buried out in the family<lb />
plot behind the house<lb />
"Crazy the traveler thinks.<lb />
But who? The old woman, or<lb />
him? He stumbles into the<lb />
backyard, his dew-soaked tennis<lb />
shoes cold on his feet.<lb />
There. From the graveyard so-<lb />
meone waves at him. No. It's on-<lb />
ly wind blowing a jacket. His<lb />
jacket, draped over Sally's tomb-<lb />
stone.<lb />
And he wonders if some nights<lb />
you might make a very wrong<lb />
turn on a very long road that<lb />
winds like the river Styx into<lb />
hades.<lb />
A familiar story, you say? A<lb />
common bit of folklore that ap-<lb />
pears in many collections of<lb />
ghost stories, that's all. I thought<lb />
the same.<lb />
And then I learned that the old<lb />
TV series, "One Step Beyond<lb />
which specialized in dramatiza-<lb />
tions of true supernatural tales<lb />
had adapted this old ghost story<lb />
in the episode, "If You See<lb />
Sally<lb />
Following the broadcast, forty-<lb />
five viewers wrote in and describ-<lb />
ed similar experiences.<lb />
Of course, we know it's just a<lb />
ghost story. But one word before<lb />
you go.<lb />
Maybe this Halloween you'll<lb />
find yourself on one of those<lb />
endless country roads with deep<lb />
woods on either side. You'll hear<lb />
something slither among the<lb />
branches, and you'll assure<lb />
yourself it's only the wind. That's<lb />
all.<lb />
Just the same, you might turn<lb />
up the radio and stare straight<lb />
ahead in the comforting glow of<lb />
your headlights as brittle leaves<lb />
flitter up before your car like bats<lb />
out of a cave at sundown. And<lb />
you'll get a chill because you'll<lb />
wonder if the sun never rises out<lb />
here and if the road never ends<lb />
Keep looking straight. Keep<lb />
driving until you're home.<lb />
Because a little girl is standing<lb />
at the road's edge. And she is<lb />
very pale and very, very cold<lb />

The cost of the dating service is<lb />
$15 per month for students. This<lb />
discount rate guarantees at least<lb />

over to the next month if two<lb />

tee of the Student Union is offer-<lb />
ing, as part of their dinner theatre<lb />
series, an all you can eat buffet<lb />
followed bv Bill Manhoff's<lb />
Broadway comedy hit. The Owl<lb />
and the Pussycat.<lb />
Productions committee chair-<lb />
man Shari Clemens said, "Con-<lb />
sidering comparative prices of a<lb />
regular dinner theatre, this is<lb />
really a good deal. The average<lb />
dinner theatre would cost $30 a<lb />
couple or more, but we offer the<lb />
same quality evening for almost<lb />
half that amount Tickets for<lb />
the dinner theatre are $9 for<lb />
students and $16 for faculty and<lb />
the public.<lb />
In the past, the faculty turnout<lb />
has generally outweighed the stu-<lb />
dent turnout; this year, the Stu-<lb />
dent Union would like to see a<lb />
larger student interest in the<lb />
theatre. Clemens said, "We hope<lb />
to see a greater student interest<lb />
not only in the dinner theatre, but<lb />
also in the Student Union itself.<lb />

because patrons don't have to<lb />
hurry through dinner then drive<lb />
to the theatre. Rather, they can<lb />
just take their time. Students who<lb />
are old enough may also bring<lb />
their favorite wine to enjoy with<lb />
dinner.<lb />
The Owl and the Pussycat is a<lb />
comedy performed by the Alpha<lb />
Omega Players (Repertory<lb />
Theater of America), a nationally<lb />
acclaimed touring company bas-<lb />
ed in Rockport, Texas. The<lb />
Alpha Omega Players have per-<lb />
formed at ECU in the past in<lb />
such productions as California<lb />
Suite, Last of the Red Hot<lb />
Lovers, and other popular hits by<lb />
playwrights such as Neil Simon.<lb />
The comedy is about education<lb />
yet has nothing to do with school.<lb />
The two characters Doris and<lb />
Felix (played by Donna Orzano<lb />
and Scott Corey) constantly<lb />
engage in a sassy rendition of the<lb />
war between the sexes. The<lb />
unlikely couple � the dumb, kit-<lb />
tenlike, sexy girl with the body<lb />
and the smart, owlish guy with<lb />
the brains � could teach us all a<lb />
little something as they set the<lb />
pace for the race of who will<lb />
educate whom.<lb />
Judging from past experience<lb />
or not, most can easily imagine<lb />
the context of the conversation<lb />
which takes place between the<lb />
two mismatches (the owl and the<lb />
pussycat). The confrontation<lb />
develops into not only a comic<lb />
verbal battle, but also a contest<lb />
of missionary-like conversion in<lb />
which each contestant wins.<lb />

graduate of the University of<lb />
Georgia, will direct with technical<lb />
assistance by artist-in-residence<lb />
Jeff Whitman. Both have just<lb />
completed two years of touring<lb />
with the Players.<lb />

picture taken. Then Dixon will<lb />
try to find someone who will be<lb />
compatible with you and your in-<lb />
terests. It may take a while<lb />
sometimes. When Debbie finds a<lb />
match for someone she will then<lb />
give the person a name and phone<lb />
number. And from there,<lb />
anything could happen.<lb />

year that shook the reggae world<lb />
at its very roots, the Bad Brains,<lb />
with Against I, shred any final<lb />
vestiges of the sun splash genre<lb />
(except for their dread-locks) and<lb />
go straight for the throat with an<lb />
undeniably metal ax.<lb />
This new album is either the<lb />
freshest and most vital thing<lb />
that's ever happened to heavy<lb />
metal, or the most unbelievable<lb />
artistic stretch ever taken in the<lb />
name of reggae. You decide.<lb />
Despite the very clean, very<lb />
slick production by Ron St. Ger-<lb />
main, the Bad Brains have com-<lb />
posed a collection of tunes that<lb />
rival and surpass just about<lb />
anything ever pumped through a<lb />
150 Watt Peavey before. The<lb />
guiatar licks on "Let Me Help"<lb />
are especially definitive of the<lb />
Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and<lb />
Van Halen musical influences<lb />
that permeate the new Brains.<lb />
The gut level energy roaring<lb />
from songs like "I Against I"<lb />
and "Re-Ignition while totally<lb />
contrary to the band's reggae<lb />
roots, is sufficient enough to<lb />
make these talented thrashers the<lb />
cross-over success of the year.<lb />
In contrast to the metal in-<lb />
strumentals, however, are the<lb />
lyrics. While they are sung in a<lb />
traditional rock and roll style<lb />
(sometimes David Lee Roth,<lb />
sometimes Bon Scott, sometimes<lb />
Robert Plant), they deal with<lb />
subjects more common to their<lb />
rasta roots, such as the spiritual<lb />
aspects of love, the insanity and<lb />
tragedy of violence and murder<lb />
and generally the universal inter-<lb />
nal struggles denoted under the<lb />
tide I Against I.<lb />
Despite its surface level ap-<lb />
pearance of commercial appeal,<lb />
this is a very penetrating album,<lb />
musically and lyrically. I highly<lb />
recommend it to any connoisseur<lb />
of heavy metal or even pro-<lb />
gressive music.<lb />
More in the mainstream of<lb />
Reggae style is the new album<lb />
from the prolific 'wailer<lb />
Yellowman. His newest release,<lb />
Rambo, does not stray very far<lb />
from his standard � a droning<lb />
yet musical rasta vocal set over a<lb />
solid reggae vamp.<lb />
With Sly Dunbar and Robbie<lb />
Shakespeare (playing drums and<lb />
bassbass synthguitar respec-<lb />
tively) behind the board as pro-<lb />
ducers, the sound is even more in<lb />
the mainstream and any hint of<lb />
Yellowman's past fame as an ex-<lb />
perimenter and driving force in<lb />
the genre is cut to a minimum.<lb />
There are, however, two in-<lb />
stances in which significant<lb />
strides are taken against the slow<lb />
and swaying norm. "Tarzan"<lb />
and "Computorize" both incor-<lb />
porate some synthesizer work<lb />
and syncopated stops which<lb />
should be just the thing to shock<lb />
you out of the hypnotizing effect<lb />
of the vamp without being too<lb />
disruptive.<lb />
On the whole, this is a very-<lb />
good, very clean recording of<lb />
Yellowman's sometimes political,<lb />
sometimes social and always self-<lb />
indulgent themes. The tunes are<lb />
kept simple, drawing greatly, it<lb />
seems, from such areas as nursery<lb />
rhymes and children's melodies.<lb />
It is very well produced album,<lb />
though perhaps a bit on the slick<lb />
side compared to his earlier work<lb />
in the early eighties. It's a good<lb />
L.P. to start with for someone in-<lb />
terested in the reggae style. That<lb />
is, if you don't take the over-<lb />
bearing ego too seriously. You<lb />
might see that Yellowman, with<lb />
his new album, is the David Lee<lb />
Roth of Reggae.<lb />

on an album from a new band,<lb />
Love And Rockets, called Ex-<lb />
press. We will also be taking a<lb />
short look at a band that is mak-<lb />
ing a lot of waves with the ever-<lb />
extreme, right wing Christian<lb />

Victorian melodies and gutter-<lb />

withstood everything from record<lb />
burnings to physical attacks on<lb />

won Saturday's homecoming<lb />
game and snapped the Pirates<lb />
15-game losing streak.<lb />
With :12 seconds remaining<lb />
in the game, placekicker Chuck<lb />
Berleth booted a 47-yard field<lb />
goal. It was his longest of the<lb />
season and gave the Pirates<lb />
their first win.<lb />
The junior walk-on from<lb />
Chicago, 111 kicked his sixth-<lb />
consecutive field goal of the<lb />
year. He is seven for nine<lb />
overall with his misses being a<lb />
blocked kick in the opening<lb />
game and a 42-yard attempt<lb />
versus West Virginia.<lb />

mance. "Chuck kicked a great<lb />
one. There was a lot of pr-<lb />
ressure packed kicking out<lb />

The Harper Junior College<lb />
transfer kicked 19 field goals in<lb />
his two years at the Palatine,<lb />
111 college. His longest was 50<lb />
yards while two of the 19 were<lb />
game-winning efforts.<lb />
Berleth came to ECU from<lb />
Harper JC along with team-<lb />
mate John O'Driscoll. "I heard<lb />
about ECU from John and<lb />
coach Wally Chambers. I knew<lb />
their kicker was graduating and<lb />
they needed someone. The<lb />
thing I like the best here is the<lb />
weather. In Illinois it's really<lb />
cold, but here it's really nice<lb />
and it doesn't affect mv kick<lb />
