Health Fair Offers<lb />
Healthy Guidelines<lb />
By PATTI KEMM1S<lb />
News Editor<lb />
From aerobic demonstrations<lb />
to breathalyzer tests,<lb />
Wednesday's 'Health Affair' of-<lb />
fered a wide number of booths<lb />
and demonstrations displaying<lb />
different alternatives for staying<lb />
healthy.<lb />
Sponsored by the West Area<lb />
Residents Council, the Student<lb />
Health Center, and Intramurals<lb />
Department, this was the Health<lb />
Affair's second year in action.<lb />
"We wanted to show everyone<lb />
different alternatives to staying<lb />
healthy explained Mary<lb />
Elesha-Adams, health educator<lb />
at the Student Health Center.<lb />
Healthy foods, such as yogurt,<lb />
fruit juices, apples and popcorn<lb />
were sold by West Area resident<lb />
halls.<lb />
"This was a great way to get<lb />
people to work together and pro-<lb />
mote our area said Neva Whitt,<lb />
director of Fletcher Dorm.<lb />
The Counseling Center, Bac-<lb />
chus, The American Cancer<lb />
Society and the Lung Association<lb />
are a few of the organizations<lb />
that participated by offering ad-<lb />
vice, pamphlets, and sometimes<lb />
extra surprizes.<lb />
Blood pressure and sugar level<lb />
was checked by the East<lb />
Carolinia Nursing Association.<lb />
There were also tables where<lb />
students could take a<lb />
breathalyzer test after drinking<lb />
mouthwash, and where they<lb />
could have their eyes checked.<lb />
Bacchus, the campus drug and<lb />
alcohol awareness group, was<lb />
making nonalcoholic mixed<lb />
drinks called mocktails. One Bac-<lb />
chus member said the purpose of<lb />
this was to show students an<lb />
alternative to alcoholic<lb />
beverages.<lb />
Food and educational informa-<lb />
tion was not all that was<lb />
available. There were also several<lb />
give-aways.<lb />
"I like the milk said Billy<lb />
White about Carolinia Dairies<lb />
donation to the Affair.<lb />
Coupons for putt-putt, in-<lb />
tramural activities, visors, but-<lb />
tons, and ballons were also given<lb />
away.<lb />
The Intramural Department<lb />
held two aerobic demonstrations.<lb />
According to Steve Gerber,<lb />
"aerobic observation" was a<lb />
prime reason for attending the af-<lb />
fair.<lb />
There was also an aerobic self-<lb />
defense demonstration held by<lb />
Doug Cobb, a karate expert.<lb />
"We really wanted to en-<lb />
courage students to learn good<lb />
health habits commented Janet<lb />
Johnson, West Area Coor-<lb />
dinator. "We're hoping the<lb />
things we show them (the<lb />
students) today will stay with<lb />
them over the years<lb />
According to Pam Cope, the<lb />
Health Affair was a great oppor-<lb />
tunity to pick up some tips on<lb />
health, watch a guy teach<lb />
aerobics and eat good, healthy<lb />
food.<lb />
"The educational aspects are<lb />
phenomenal said Edmund<lb />
Fish.<lb />

SGA Will Decide Future Of Loans<lb />
WARD<lb />
ECU Fraternities Cope<lb />
With Different Rushes<lb />
By CAROLYN DRISCOLL<lb />
Assistant News Editor<lb />
The Inter-Fraternity Council's<lb />
policy of dry (alcohol-free) rush,<lb />
in effect for a second semester,<lb />
has brought about many changes<lb />
to the greek system, according to<lb />
members of several different<lb />
fraternities on campus.<lb />
The most obvious difference<lb />
between this year's dry rush and<lb />
the rushes of the past seems to be<lb />
the number of the people atten-<lb />
ding.<lb />
"We usually had about 200<lb />
people each night during wet<lb />
rush said a Kappa Sigma<lb />
member. "But now we're only<lb />
seeing about 90<lb />
Mike Christitielo, a third-year<lb />
Tau Kappa Epsilon member also<lb />
noticed this trend. "We're<lb />
definitely seeing a lot less<lb />
people he said.<lb />
However, most fraternity<lb />
members agreed that although<lb />
fewer people are attending rush,<lb />
the "quality" of the people has<lb />
greatly improved under the new<lb />
policy.<lb />
Said Christitielo, "Dry rush<lb />
has brought in a lot of people<lb />
who are more interested in<lb />
becoming TKE's than in just<lb />
drinking our beer<lb />
Steve Cunanan, SGA president<lb />
and Sigma Phi Epsilon member<lb />
commented, "I think it's an ex-<lb />
cellent idea. It gives the frater-<lb />
nities a chance to show what<lb />
they're made of, not what<lb />
alcohol can do for them<lb />
While some fraternity<lb />
members said that dry rush is less<lb />
expensive for their organizations<lb />
because they no longer have to<lb />
supply prospective brothers with<lb />
beer, Rob Brugh, a Lambda Chi<lb />
Alpha member disagreed.<lb />
"It's costing us more money<lb />
because we have to pay for alter-<lb />
native types of entertainment,<lb />
whereas before, the kegs were the<lb />
entertainmenthe said.<lb />
Because campus sororities,<lb />
members of the National<lb />
Panhellenic Conference, have<lb />
been subject to dry rushes since<lb />
the 1960's, new drinking policies<lb />
have not affected them as much<lb />
as they have the fraternities, ac-<lb />
cording to Laura Sweet,<lb />
Panhellenic advisor at ECU.<lb />
However, according to<lb />
Christina Keene, an Alpha Delta<lb />
Pi member, the new drinking<lb />
laws will mean changes in the<lb />
sorority's social functions.<lb />
She said, "The new laws mean<lb />
that we can't have as many<lb />
socials, and they affect what<lb />
sisters can and can't drink<lb />
Keene added, "But even<lb />
though no one in the pledge class<lb />
made the drinking age, I think<lb />
the new laws brought in more<lb />
girls who were serious about join-<lb />
ing. Many see it as a good way to<lb />
meet people rather than going<lb />
downtown.<lb />
?<lb />
The Sept. 29 meeting of the<lb />
SGA Legislature will debate the<lb />
passing of the SGA Emergency<lb />
Medical Loan bill which was tem-<lb />
porarily reinstated by the summer<lb />
legislature.<lb />
The loan was to be terminated<lb />
last July 1, but John Eagan, SGA<lb />
treasurer, and Steve Cunanan,<lb />
SGA president, acting as the<lb />
summer legislation, temporarily<lb />
einstated the bill with two of<lb />
three signatures needed.<lb />
Last Spring, Eagan chaired a<lb />
Student Loan Advisory Commit-<lb />
tee to examine the fund. The ma-<lb />
jor problem they discovered con-<lb />
cerned the payback of the loan.<lb />
Several suggestions were offered<lb />
by the committee and were im-<lb />
plemented into the reinstated bill.<lb />
These additions include the<lb />
time span to repay the loan,<lb />
which went from six months to 60<lb />
days. This change took place<lb />
because once the funds are<lb />
distributed, there is no more<lb />
money until the student repays<lb />
the loan. It was also found that<lb />
once a student graduates, after<lb />
six months, they are harder to<lb />
find.<lb />
In addition, the first day that<lb />
payment of loan is overdue, the<lb />
borrower's name will be turned<lb />
over to the Greenville Credit<lb />
Bureau for collection.<lb />
Lastly, the penalty for late pay-<lb />
ment will be $30 with a process-<lb />
ing fee of $10.<lb />
"I think these guidelines will<lb />
keep people from not paying it<lb />
back stated Eagan.<lb />
He explained that the con-<lb />
troversy goes a little farther than<lb />
just the payback issue. Some peo-<lb />
ple are concerned that medical<lb />
loans aren't the business of SGA.<lb />
The loans of up to $150, can be<lb />
used to pay for expensive<lb />
medicine, doctor's visits, wisdom<lb />
teeth removal any of medical<lb />
reason. A student must have a<lb />
doctor at ECU Student Health<lb />
Center write a statement express-<lb />
ing a need for a loan. The student<lb />
then takes the note and his or her<lb />
ID to the SGA in order to sign the<lb />
loan. Once the doctor has written<lb />
a statement, the reason for the<lb />
loan is confidential and will not<lb />
be disclosed to anyone involved<lb />
with the loan (unless so desired).<lb />
"SGA is here to help the<lb />
students continued Eagan.<lb />
"Sometimes students who doni<lb />
have the finances need medical<lb />
assistance. This service is for<lb />
them just like refrigerator sales or<lb />
busing<lb />
Although the loans are present-<lb />
ly available, so far no one has<lb />
taken advantage of them, said<lb />
Eagan.<lb />
The fate of the bill will be<lb />
known after the September 29<lb />
meeting of the legislature. Accor-<lb />
ding to Eagan, this issue promises<lb />
to hold a lot of controversy.<lb />
Eagan concluded, we<lb />
brought it (the bill) back. Now<lb />
we're going to let the legislature<lb />
decidethey have the final say<lb />

ECU will become host to a new<lb />
gerontology program that will go<lb />
into full swing for the 1987 spring<lb />
semester.<lb />
Gerontology, which is the<lb />
study of the aged, will kick off its<lb />
first year as a minors program<lb />
after being in the development<lb />
stage for four years.<lb />
"The demand is just starting<lb />
and students are becoming in-<lb />
terested said Jim Mitchell,<lb />
associate professor of sociology<lb />
and director of the gerontology<lb />
program.<lb />
Studies done by the U.S.<lb />
Ceremony<lb />
Planned By<lb />
AFROTC<lb />
The AFROTC Det. 600 of<lb />
ECU is sponsoring a formal<lb />
Retreat Ceremony on Thursday,<lb />
Sept. 18. The ceremony will begin<lb />
at 5 p.m. in front of Minges Col-<lb />
iseum.<lb />
The ceremony is in honor of<lb />
the Air Force's anniversary as an<lb />
individual organization. The Air<lb />
Force, which was once a part of<lb />
the Army Air Corps, became in-<lb />
dependant on Sept. 18, 1947.<lb />
The ceremony will include the<lb />
playing of the Retreat, the Na-<lb />
tional Anthem, and the lowering<lb />
of the flag. Leslie Garner, mayor<lb />
of Greenville, will be the guest<lb />
speaker.<lb />
Bureau of the Census show that<lb />
by the year 2020, the number of<lb />
elderly people will increase by 95<lb />
percent. In the year 2030, there<lb />
will be a 121 percent increase.<lb />
The increasing population of<lb />
old people is a good reason to in-<lb />
clude the program along with ma-<lb />
jors such as nursing, psychology,<lb />
sociology or even parks and<lb />
recreation.<lb />
"A person is likely to be<lb />
employed as a nutritionist, a<lb />
therapist or a social worker with<lb />
a minor in gerontology said<lb />
Mitchell.<lb />
He added, "It's broad enough<lb />
and interdisciplinary enough that<lb />
students can use it with a variety<lb />
of majors<lb />
To obtain a gerontology<lb />
minor, 24 credit hours must be<lb />
fulfilled. Courses range from In-<lb />
troduction to Gerontology, to<lb />
Physical Activities for the Aged<lb />
to Death and Dying.<lb />
The pattern of study of the<lb />
program begins with an Introduc-<lb />
tion to Gerontology and is<lb />
followed by elective courses.<lb />
Research into and a practicum in<lb />
gerontology follow. The program<lb />
is concluded with a seminar in<lb />
gerontology.<lb />
Gerontology, a relatively new<lb />
field of study, is an "excellent<lb />
opportunity for students, because<lb />
it provides them with flexibility<lb />
to go many ways in the field ex-<lb />
plains Mitchell.<lb />
He added, "Eventually one<lb />
will have to be confronted with<lb />
elderly people. Some of us are go-<lb />

Financial Cutbacks<lb />
Financial Aid Eyes Changes<lb />
WASHINGTON, D.C. (CPS) <lb />
Nearly four million students na-<lb />
tionwide may have trouble get-<lb />
ting student loans soon, a<lb />
bankers' association warned last<lb />
week.<lb />
The interest rates students pay<lb />
on new loans will rise while many<lb />
banks, says the Consumer<lb />
Bankers Association (CBA) in<lb />
Washington, D.C, may simply<lb />
stop making student loans if<lb />
Congress approves a proposal to<lb />
cut a special government<lb />
allowance the banks get for mak-<lb />
ing the loans.<lb />
"Many banks may just get out<lb />
(of the student loan business<lb />
completely said William<lb />
Clohan, the group's lawyer.<lb />
"Students are going to have to<lb />
look very hard for an institution<lb />
willing to loan them money ad-<lb />
ded Bill Kidwell of the National<lb />
Education Lending Center.<lb />
The last cut in the special<lb />
government allowance in March,<lb />
1986, convinced California - bas-<lb />
ed Security Pacific Bank to stop<lb />
making student loans. The bank<lb />
sold the loans it had already<lb />
made to Marine Midland Bank.<lb />
But even Marine Midland of-<lb />
ficials are not optimistic. "The<lb />
bottom line said bank official<lb />
Greg Lancaster, "is some banks<lb />
are going to sav 'Why are we in<lb />
this?<lb />
About 13,000 lenders are in the<lb />
Guaranteed Student Loan (GSL)<lb />
program now, Clohan estimated.<lb />
Their worry is a provision, ap-<lb />
proved three weeks ago by a<lb />
House - Senate conference com-<lb />
mittee, in the proposed Higher<lb />
Education Reauthorization Act<lb />
that would cut the special<lb />
allowance banks get.<lb />
To encourage banks to make<lb />
marginally profitable loans to<lb />
students, the government has let<lb />
the banks take an allowance<lb />
amounting to 3.5 percent higher<lb />
than the rate the government<lb />
charges for Treasury Bills.<lb />
Banks say they cannot make a<lb />
profit on student loans without<lb />
the allowance.<lb />
When the GSL program began<lb />
ten years ago, Kidwell<lb />
recalledCongress was literally<lb />
begging lenders to come in<lb />
"The incentives enticed them<lb />
to come in, and build im-<lb />
provements in the system he<lb />
said.<lb />
Congress, the Gramm - Rud-<lb />
man balanced budget law and the<lb />
administration have all helped<lb />
whittle the incentives down over<lb />
the last five years. The bill now<lb />
before Congress would shave the<lb />
allowance from 3.5 percent over<lb />
the T - bill rate to 3.25 percent<lb />
over the T - bill rate.<lb />
"For every dollar 1 lend out<lb />
Clohan said, "I get about one -<lb />
half a penny back (in profit).<lb />
And that doesn't even account<lb />
for the .25 percent incentive<lb />
reduction<lb />
Advocates of the reduction see<lb />
it as a way to help cut goverment<lb />
costs and balance the federal<lb />
budget.<lb />
"Yes, the department would<lb />
like to see the cut (because) it<lb />
would make the cost of operating<lb />
the GSL program that much<lb />
less said a Department of<lb />
Education spokesman. "The<lb />
total cost now is $3 billion a year,<lb />
which does not include the loans<lb />
themselves<lb />
The spokesman, who asked not<lb />
to be named, wouldn't speculate<lb />
about how many students would<lb />
be left without loans or might be<lb />
pushed out of school by the<lb />
measure, but did add students'<lb />
alternatives include the<lb />
students' own savings, scholar-<lb />
ships and parental contributions<lb />
to tuition payments<lb />

"Also, remember many col-<lb />

programs he said.<lb />
The bankers themselves note<lb />
students who already have GSLs<lb />
probably won't feel the pinch.<lb />
But students who try to take out<lb />
loans after the incentive reduc-<lb />
tion goes into effect as soon as<lb />
Oct. 1 or as late as next Jan. 1 <lb />
will have to pay higher interest<lb />
rates on the money they can find.<lb />
"For the first four years (after<lb />
the reduction become law), the<lb />
interest will be eight percent<lb />
Clohan predicts. "From five to<lb />
ten years, it will go up to ten per-<lb />
cent<lb />
For a student who holds<lb />
$10,000 worth of loans, Clohan<lb />
said, the two percent interest hike<lb />
represents an extra $200 year, or<lb />
about $17 a month.<lb />
"It doesn't sound like a lot,<lb />
but many students hold more<lb />
than that Clohan said. The<lb />
average annual student loan is<lb />
$2,390.<lb />
But generally, Kidwell predicts<lb />
"money will be less available en<lb />

"Lower - tier schools serving<lb />

harder to come by<lb />
Kidwell believes "most banks<lb />
will try to continue, but they may<lb />
have to redirect (their efforts) to<lb />
loans (they can make) at a lower<lb />
cost (to themselves)<lb />
"You may see a bailout " of<lb />
banks from the program, he add-<lb />

Gender Intelligence Levels<lb />
Examined Through Study<lb />
LOUNDONVILLE, NY (CPS)<lb />
- Women get higher grades than<lb />
men, and probably do better in<lb />
college because they mature<lb />
faster, says a six - year study b a<lb />
sociology professor at Siena Col-<lb />
lege in upstate New ork.<lb />
"Women students consistently<lb />
did better (at college) than men<lb />
students said Prof. Paul Mur-<lb />
ray. "During their four years at<lb />
school, women seem to improe<lb />
their study habits. The men<lb />
don't<lb />
"It appears he said, "that<lb />
sometimes the academic end of<lb />
college becomes a secondary pur-<lb />
suit for males<lb />
Murray, in trying to figure out<lb />
why some students got better<lb />
grades than others, examined<lb />
students' academic and tamih<lb />
backgrounds, living ar-<lb />
rangements, extracurricular ac-<lb />
tivities and study habits before<lb />
noticing that gender seemed to in-<lb />
fluence their grades most of all.<lb />
No one is sure why women get<lb />
better college grades than men,<lb />
but Cynthia Secor, director of<lb />
Higher Education Resources Ser-<lb />
vices Mid America, hypthosises it<lb />
may hae something to do with<lb />
the way people become socializ-<lb />
ed.<lb />
"Girls are socialized to be<lb />
more verbal, more detailed and<lb />
polite Secor explained. "Girls<lb />
are socialized to be not as ram-<lb />
bunctious at boys<lb />
Women scored higher in Mur-<lb />
ray's classes than male students<lb />
did, and the disparity, he said,<lb />
'is much wider in up-<lb />
perclassmen<lb />
Although she does not disagree<lb />
with many of Murray's findings,<lb />
Secor added, "The real dif-<lb />
ference (in performances) is when<lb />
both get out in the real work<lb />
world.<lb />
"Women do better in school<lb />
gradewise than men, and then<lb />
don't do as well in the real<lb />
world she contended. "Men<lb />
will achieve more there<lb />
When he started, Murray<lb />
hoped to find the characteristics<lb />
that separated students who did<lb />
well in college from those who<lb />
didn't.<lb />
"My original focus was to<lb />
make only incidental reference to<lb />
sex differences Murrav said.<lb />
"but it began to appear that this<lb />
was the most significant finding.<lb />
There is a sex difference on<lb />
almost every variable<lb />
For example, the study shows<lb />
the sons of working mother<lb />
scored lower than boys whose<lb />
mothers didn't work outside the<lb />
home.<lb />
But women with working<lb />
mothers scored higher on Mur-<lb />
ray's tests than women whose<lb />
mothers stayed home. Secor<lb />
believes women emulate working<lb />
mothers and learn that "its okay<lb />
to succeed if you work<lb />
Murray's tests also indicate<lb />
middle - income families produce<lb />
high - scoring children, be they<lb />
male or female. Yet male<lb />

Medicine<lb />
Whose Body Is It Anyway?<lb />
The Naa HcpaMk<lb />
Research in modern biology laboratories<lb />
routinely requires human cells and DNA,<lb />
the hereditary material found in the cells of<lb />
all living creatures. Ordinarily no one gives<lb />
a passing thought to the donors. In nearly<lb />
every case, the cells will not yield anything<lb />
of commercial value. But lotteries do have<lb />
winners.<lb />
What happens if scientists examining a<lb />
person's cells find a protein that can be<lb />
made into an anticancer drug? Should the<lb />
profits go to the patient, whose cells were<lb />
essential to the project's success? Or to the<lb />
researchers, who transformed material<lb />
destined for the trash into a valuable pro-<lb />
duct? Whose body is it, anyway?<lb />
Consider John Moore, a recovered<lb />
cancer patient treated at the UCLA<lb />
Medical Center. His doctor removed<lb />
Moore's diseased spleen, and then carried<lb />
out research on cells from the organ. He<lb />
eventually developed a line of cells that<lb />
were commercially viable. UCLA patented<lb />
the line, a biotechnology company<lb />
developed a product based on it, and<lb />
Moore sued. The case is in litigation.<lb />
In congressional hearings, in journals, in<lb />
symposiums and in courtrooms, people are<lb />
trying to thrash out answers. Odd as the<lb />
questions sound, they are important.<lb />
Biotechnology is big business. The Com-<lb />
merce Department predicts that the market<lb />
for genetically engineered products, under<lb />
S100 million today, will increase to tens of<lb />
bilions by the 1990s.<lb />
Scientists tend to dismiss the body parts<lb />
debate as absurd, but they should be wary.<lb />
Their funding, stature and independence<lb />
depend on the public's trust, and that sup-<lb />
port is fragile.<lb />
The gravity of the issue is often belied by<lb />
the bemused tone of the discussion. Ex-<lb />
perts convened several months ago at a<lb />
symposium sponsored by the Office of<lb />
Technology Assessment, a non-partisan<lb />
government agency. Before long, the<lb />
panelists had been diverted from<lb />
"Patient's Rights in Human Biological<lb />
Materials" and found themselves instead<lb />
fighting the Great Cookie War.<lb />
Thomas Murray, medical ethicist at the<lb />
University of Texas, likened a patient who<lb />
had allowed researchers to use his tissue to<lb />
a cook who had shared a recipe: "You<lb />
make a gift of (family recipes) to your<lb />
neighbor. And two years later, they turn<lb />
out to be the heart of a best-selling<lb />
cookbook that your neighbor has publish-<lb />
ed Should you feel offended? Have you<lb />
been done an injustice? Do you have any<lb />
moral claim on a share of the profits from<lb />
the sales of this cookbook? I think that is<lb />
the question<lb />
The pace of technological advance<lb />
means there is no ducking these questions.<lb />
According to figures compiled by the<lb />
House Science and Technology Commit-<lb />
tee, "In the last five years, patent applica-<lb />
tions for university-owned inventions us-<lb />
ing human biological materials increased<lb />
over 300 percent as compared with the five<lb />
years preceding<lb />
Continue to expect more heat than light<lb />
from the argument over how those<lb />
"human biological materials" blood,<lb />
sweat, tears and the rest should be used.<lb />
Immense practical difficulties further<lb />
obscure philosophical and ethical ques-<lb />
tions. As Levine noted, "Most of the<lb />
timewe don't know who the human<lb />
materials came from. The researcher gets<lb />
the materials from the surgical pathologist,<lb />
and the surgical pathologist, in the interest<lb />
of preserving the patient's privacy, does<lb />
not tell the name or does not attach any<lb />
identifier to the tissue. And so there is no<lb />
way to find out anything<lb />
In many cases, research requires pooling<lb />
the contributions of hundreds or<lb />
thousands of subjects. Deciphering the<lb />
structure of one hormone required taking<lb />
pituitary glands from 7,000 cadavers. As<lb />
Levine put it, "Should we go back and of-<lb />
fer to share the proceeds with the estates of<lb />
7,000 dead people?"<lb />

The Daniloff Affair<lb />
The Kremlin Wants Its Spy Back<lb />
Concerning the Daniloff affair, a few<lb />
observations:<lb />
1. It isn't easy to figure out what the<lb />
Soviet Union is up to. If what the gang<lb />
over there wanted was as simple as the<lb />
release of its spy Gennadi Zakharov, the<lb />
Soviets would have gone at it in another<lb />
way.<lb />
On The Right<lb />
By WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY<lb />
By acting so flagrantly against an<lb />
American journalist so flagrantly the<lb />
victim of a setup, the Soviet Union has<lb />
attracted attention to Zakharov he<lb />
would never otherwise have gotten.<lb />
Why didn't they just let Zakharov get<lb />
convicted, and then a few months later,<lb />
as happened in 1979, trade him for a<lb />
few dissidents?<lb />
The way in which the Kremlin has<lb />
played this argues both against the<lb />
likelihood of a release of Zakharov and<lb />
certainly argues against that happy arm-<lb />
in-arm march toward the end of the<lb />
rainbow together that the Soviet Union<lb />
has been promoting in various cultural<lb />
and political theaters ever since the<lb />
Geneva summit of last November.<lb />
2. In a word, the Soviet move is just<lb />
plain stupid, to judge from what it is<lb />
that the Soviet Union desires, namely<lb />
maximum pressure on the United States<lb />
to stall on our Strategic Defense In-<lb />
itiative. Speculation necessarily takes<lb />
one to the inner politics of the Kremlin.<lb />
It is by no means inconceivable that an<lb />
arm of the Kremlin the KGB, most<lb />
likely undertook the frame-up and<lb />
publicized the results of it in order to<lb />
put a different arm of the Kremlin on<lb />
the spot.<lb />
We must always bear in mind that the<lb />
majority of Russians, as distinguished<lb />
from the majority of Russian in-<lb />
telligentsia, believe what is told them,<lb />
and Izvestia and Soviet television have<lb />
been busy broadcasting the obvious<lb />
guilt of Nick Daniloff.<lb />
It is generally correct to assume that<lb />
the Kremlin is united, even as it is<lb />
generally safe to assume that the<lb />
Vatican is united. But there are factions<lb />
everywhere, and in the Soviet Union we<lb />
may be seeing in action a faction in very<lb />
high gear.<lb />
3. Whatever the division within the<lb />
Kremlin, there is certainly correspon-<lb />
ding division within the Reagan ad-<lb />
ministration. Every day the emphasis<lb />
seems to change, first in the direction of<lb />
toughness, next in the direction of con-<lb />
ciliation.<lb />
Mr. Reagan, when he addressed the<lb />
subject on his way back from Santa<lb />
Barbara, Calif was bluntly outspoken<lb />
in saying there would be no<lb />
"trade-off Zakharov (who is guilty)<lb />
in exchange for Daniloff (who is inno-<lb />
cent).<lb />
But on Wednesday, State Department<lb />
press officer Bernard Kalb, a gentleman<lb />
of very great sophistication, uttered the<lb />
following ominous words: "The objec-<lb />
tive here is .to win the release of Nick<lb />
Daniloff, rather than engage in<lb />
retaliatory actions<lb />
But the objective is not merely to win<lb />
the release of Nick Daniloff.<lb />
Presumably we could do that before<lb />
midnight, by giving the communists<lb />
back their spy. Our objective is to get<lb />
back Daniloff without giving anything<lb />
to the Soviet Union it does not now<lb />
have. And how can we effect this<lb />
without retaliatory action?<lb />
Such as? Well, one example is the<lb />
prospective cancellation of the "town<lb />
meeting" scheduled to take place in<lb />
Latvia. The whole idea of a "town<lb />
meeting" within the Soviet Union is<lb />
something like a black Mass, but we<lb />
have got together a pretty impressive<lb />
American delegation, including Sen.<lb />
Bill Bradley, Assistant Defense<lb />
Secretary Richard Perle, Robert<lb />
McFarlane, Helmut Sonnenfeldt, Jeane<lb />
Kirkpatrick and other luminaries.<lb />
Clearly the Soviet Union wishes that<lb />
town meeting to take place. Its cancella-<lb />
tion would bother them and would<lb />
clearly be interpreted as an act of<lb />
retaliation.<lb />
What else? One is reminded that, last<lb />
year, Caspar Weinberger remarked that<lb />
980 Soviet representatives were in the<lb />
United States, many under diplomatic<lb />
immunity, while the United States has,<lb />
over there, only 276 representatives.<lb />
Most of theirs are KGB agents, though<lb />
it doesn't really make much difference,<lb />
in dealing with the Soviet official,<lb />
whether he is a KGB agent or not.<lb />
A member of the KGB is merely<lb />
another Soviet communist trained in<lb />
specific artifices. Stalin wasn't a KGB<lb />
agent but did enough harm without that<lb />
special training. A Soviet diplomat is in<lb />
America not to protect Soviet tourists,<lb />
but to damage America.<lb />
Said Weinberger: Why don't we cut<lb />
down Soviet representation? And he<lb />
made that suggestion a year before<lb />
Daniloff. If we were to act now, it<lb />
would be viewed as a retaliatorv in<lb />
nature. So what, if it is an objective we<lb />
desire?<lb />
But we could get much more serious<lb />
than that. We could freeze agricultural<lb />
shipments; why, we could even close<lb />
our eyes and pretend that the Soviet<lb />
Union is South Africa.<lb />
Unhappily, Mr. Reagan is in a spot,<lb />
but he needs to remember that just as<lb />
his policy has not been to get our<lb />
hostages in Lebanon back at any cost,<lb />
so it can't be now primarily our objec-<lb />
tive to get poor Mr. Daniloff back.<lb />

Will The Democrats Fumble<lb />
By CHARLES LANE<lb />
Tto Nn Rpblk<lb />
Once, tax reform was a clearly<lb />
Democratic idea. Jimmy Carter called our<lb />
tax system "a disgrace to the human<lb />
race Liberal academics argued for a<lb />
simpler system with fewer loopholes. Sen.<lb />
Bill Bradley and Rep. Richard Gephardt,<lb />
both Democrats, introduced the first bill<lb />
in the current round of reform.<lb />
But in 1984, Walter Mondale refused to<lb />
call for tax reform, for fear of offending<lb />
various constituencies. Subsequently in<lb />
Congress, many Democrats balked at hur-<lb />
ting special interest-groups and business<lb />
PACs. This November, Republicans will<lb />
probably get most of the credit for the<lb />
new tax reform bill.<lb />
If Democrats don't want to miss the<lb />
next boat, too, they had better turn their<lb />
attention to the Social Security payroll<lb />
tax, or FICA. Including the employer<lb />
contribution, it will rise to 15 percent by<lb />
1990. After tax reform, this will be equal<lb />
to the top income tax bracket for 80 per-<lb />
cent of taxpayers.<lb />
FICA is terribly regressive. Everyone<lb />
pays the same rate right now 7.15 per-<lb />
cent, plus a matching share paid by<lb />
employers. The only income distinctions<lb />
benefit the well-off: income over $42,000<lb />
a year is FICA-free, as is income from in-<lb />
vestments.<lb />
Income-tax rates have been cut,<lb />
especially for the well-off, while FICA<lb />
has gotten more burdensome, especially<lb />
for the poor. As a result, the total tax<lb />
burden of a family of four at the poverty<lb />
line rose from 1.8 percent of income in<lb />
1979 to 10.4 percent in 1985.<lb />
The tax reform bill undoes much of this<lb />
damage. Households earning less than<lb />
$20,000 a year will see their total federal<lb />
tax bills cut by a fifth or more. Six million<lb />
poor families will be taken off the<lb />
income-tax rolls. But many still have to<lb />
pay Social Security tax. One of FICA's<lb />
worst follies is that it applies to the first<lb />
dollar a poor person earns.<lb />
FICA is a job destroyer, too. Money-<lb />
losing businesses don't pay income tax.<lb />
But they do have to pay FICA. New<lb />
businesses start paying Social Security<lb />
with their first hire. Companies struggling<lb />
to avoid bankruptcy get no reprieve. The<lb />
FICA tax amounts to a 14.3 percent<lb />
penalty on the decision of a company to<lb />
create a job and of a worker to take it.<lb />
Otherwise intelligent people cling to the<lb />
illusion that Social Security is like an an-<lb />
nuity that benefits are just the return<lb />
on the money you put in. Mechanically,<lb />
this is wrong. Today's FICA payments<lb />
pay for today's Social Security checks <lb />
they aren't saved and invested. Even<lb />
metaphorically, the "insurance" idea is<lb />
bogus. The money today's retirees paid<lb />
into Social Security over their lifetimes,<lb />
invested at a normal rate of return, would<lb />
pay for less than one-sixth of the benefits<lb />
a typical retiree gets.<lb />
Meanwhile higher FICA tax rates and<lb />
benefit reductions set for after the year<lb />
2000 mean today's workers may not get as<lb />
much out of the system as they put in.<lb />
Social Security is, in fact, a transfer<lb />
program. Democrats needn't apologize<lb />
for suppporting such programs. But this<lb />
one is a regressive transfer financed by a<lb />
regressive tax. The average income per<lb />
capita of the elderly is 15 percent higher<lb />
than that of the general population.<lb />
From 1973 to 1984, the average non-<lb />
elderly couple's real income didn't grow,<lb />
but the average elderly couple's did <lb />
thanks to Social Security benefits. That is,<lb />
families struggling to keep up with infla-<lb />
tion paid more FICA taxes so the elderly<lb />
could stay ahead of inflation. What is<lb />
liberal about that?<lb />
Social Security should be paid for like<lb />
any other program: through income<lb />
taxes. This makes even more sense now<lb />
that we're about to get a broad-based new<lb />
tax system. Increasing income-tax rates to<lb />
raise the same amount now raised through<lb />
FICA would make the overall tax system<lb />
fairer and more efficient.<lb />
Most people would still face lower total<lb />
tax rates than they do now. Simply cutting<lb />
FICA would achieve the same purpose.<lb />
But if revenues are cut, benefits must be<lb />
cut as well. We mustn't squander tne re-<lb />
cent reforms, which have brought the<lb />
Social Security system into financial and<lb />
actuarial balance.<lb />
Cutting Social Security poses a<lb />
philosophical challenge for Democrats.<lb />
Do they really believe in activist govern-<lb />
ment to help the needy? Or are they simply<lb />
protecting current programs and consti-<lb />
tuencies?<lb />
The issue isn't destroying Social Securi-<lb />
ty. The issue is saving it. There is no<lb />
liberal justification for refusing to amend<lb />
a system that, on average, takes money<lb />
from those with less and gives it to those<lb />
with more.<lb />
There are a number of ways to prune<lb />
Social Security without pushing those<lb />
who depend on it into poverty. One is to<lb />
tax benefits. Under the new lower rates,<lb />
this may not bring in as much as before.<lb />
But it's still a step in the right direction <lb />
especially now that the tax system won't<lb />
touch poor people.<lb />
Sometime soon, someone is going to<lb />
make an issue of Social Security and the<lb />
regressive, job-destroying FICA tax. Will<lb />
the Democrats grab the next tax reform<lb />
issue, or fumble it away like the last one?<lb />

'Star Trek' Celebrates Twentieth Anniversary<lb />
By MICAH HARRIS<lb />
MtWttta<lb />
Twenty years after its debut in<lb />
1966, "Star Trek" is still boldly<lb />
going where no man has gone<lb />
before. It remains a television<lb />
phenomenon, perpetually fresh<lb />
and intellectually and emotional-<lb />
ly stimulating.<lb />
A gala party was held at Disney<lb />
Land to celebrate it's twentieth<lb />
anniversary, reuniting the cast<lb />
and, more significantly, allowing<lb />
discussion of a forth-coming<lb />
movie, The Voyage Home.<lb />
Gene Rodenberry conceived<lb />
"Star Trek" as a "Wagon Train<lb />
to the stars He modeled his<lb />
hero, Captain Christopher Pike,<lb />
after the naval hero of literature,<lb />
Captain Horatio Hornblower.<lb />
The original pilot for the series<lb />
was entitled "The Cage The<lb />
only surviving character of this<lb />
episode was Leonard Nimoy's<lb />
"Spock who was in the em-<lb />
brionic stages of development. In<lb />
an early scene he speaks in a cold,<lb />
computer-like monotone; later,<lb />
he smiles in pleasure at an exotic,<lb />
alien plant.<lb />
NBC decided the concept was<lb />
okay but the pilot was deemed<lb />
too intellectual for television au-<lb />
diences. "Go back and make<lb />
another pilot they said. "And<lb />
one more thing get rid of the<lb />
dude with pointed ears<lb />
Happily, Rodenberry did not<lb />
compromise on an intelligent<lb />
script or the pointed-eared<lb />
dude. In fact, the second pilot<lb />
was more cerebral than the first.<lb />
"Where No Man Has Gone<lb />
Before" was a classic Greek<lb />
tragedy of the far future involv-<lb />
ing psionic powers thrust upon<lb />
two innocent crew members and<lb />
their progression to a godhood<lb />
thev were all too human to han-<lb />
dle.<lb />
There had been some personnel<lb />
changes on the Enterprise by this<lb />
time. The late Jeffrey Hunter<lb />
who had played Captain Pike<lb />
asked for a transfer, so Captain<lb />
Jim Kirk was assigned duty.<lb />
The Enterprise crew was also<lb />
becoming more familiar. Scotty<lb />
and Sulu also signed aboard in<lb />
this story.<lb />
The ordering of a second pilot<lb />
was a first for television; one of<lb />
several "Star Trek" would<lb />
achieve. It was also the first series<lb />
to be revived after cancellation<lb />
because of a flood of fan mail;<lb />
and the first to feature an inter-<lb />
racial kiss between Kirk and<lb />
Uhura in "Plato's Stepchildren<lb />
With Rodenberry at the helm,<lb />
the Enterprise was able to cir-<lb />
cumnavigate the network cen-<lb />
sors. Stories dealt with such con-<lb />
troversial subjects of the 60s as<lb />
racism ("The Devil in the<lb />
Dark"), and the Vietnam War<lb />
("A Private Little War").<lb />
The secret of "Star Trek's"<lb />
continual success can be at-<lb />
tributed to several things.<lb />
Debuting in turbulent times, it<lb />
offered an optimistic view of the<lb />
future and what it could be, (a<lb />
time of global peace in which<lb />
men and women of different na-<lb />
tionalities worked together to<lb />
reach the stars).<lb />
Another reason for "Star<lb />
Trek's" popularity is the actors'<lb />
determination to create<lb />
characters of depth to whom we<lb />
can relate and care about. Kirk,<lb />
Spock, and McCoy are all lonely<lb />
men in conflict with their emo-<lb />
tions, whether they admit to<lb />
them or not.<lb />
Although story continuity was<lb />
generally not stressed, William<lb />
Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and<lb />
DeForest Kelly took pains to be<lb />
sure that character consistency<lb />
was.<lb />
And again, "Star Trek" has<lb />
maintained a high profile via syn-<lb />
dication. It continues to gain new<lb />
fans every year. This constant ex-<lb />
posure keeps Trek enthusiasm<lb />
high as opposed to Star Wars in-<lb />
terest which is fizzling away<lb />
because there has been no Jedi-<lb />
related material presented in<lb />
three years.<lb />
The TV programs continually<lb />
promote interest in the new series<lb />
of feature films which were a<lb />
long time coming There were<lb />
rumors of a "Star Trek" movie<lb />
in the early 70's. Then it was to<lb />
be a new television series, and<lb />
finally a movie again.<lb />
Star Trek: The Motion Picture<lb />
was a major disappointment to<lb />
fans when it finally arrived. It<lb />
was what "Star Trek" should<lb />
never be dull. How a talented<lb />
director, good actors, fantastic<lb />
special effects, and an intriguing<lb />
concept combined to produce this<lb />
failure is a mystery of cosmic<lb />
proportions which Carl Sagan<lb />
would have difficulty unraveling.<lb />
Fortunately, the movie still<lb />
made money and Star Trek II:<lb />
The Wrath of Khan debuted a<lb />
few years later. For my money,<lb />
this remains the ultimate Trek<lb />
movie. It captured the feel of the<lb />
better episodes (interestingly, it<lb />
was conceived as a TV movie)<lb />
while updating them in style and<lb />
character.<lb />
The aging of the cast, instead<lb />
of being side-stepped, was used<lb />
as a springboard for a story large-<lb />
ly about Kirk's accepting of his<lb />
own and his friend, Spock's <lb />
mortality. Continuity was also<lb />
stessed by picking up a loose<lb />
thread and character. Khan,<lb />
from the series.<lb />
Star Trek III was perhaps the<lb />
most controversial of the movies<lb />
so far. Many fans wanted Spock<lb />
to be resurrected; others felt his<lb />
return made the beautiful and<lb />
touching previous film futile.<lb />
Equally pointless was the ap-<lb />
pearence of Kirk's son and (more<lb />
painfully) the Enterprise's<lb />
destruction.<lb />
The meaning of all this carnage<lb />
was to show the capacity of<lb />
human beings for self-sacrifice.<lb />
But somehow suspension of<lb />
disbelief was not achieved to this<lb />
end as in The Wrath of Khan. In<lb />
comparison. Star Trek III is a<lb />
sensationalistic movie.<lb />
The fourth movie should wrap<lb />
up the loose ends of the previous<lb />
picture and hopefuly bring the<lb />
story line begun in The Wrath of<lb />
Khan to a close; thus completing<lb />
a trilogy and allowing the Trek<lb />
characters to get on to other<lb />
things<lb />

Bv CLAY DEANHARDT<lb />

1 have a suggestion; a pro-<lb />
posal, if you will, that I think will<lb />
nelp solve many if not all <lb />
the problems that face the world<lb />
'oday.<lb />
You see, I want to ban Mon-<lb />
days.<lb />
That's right, ban them.<lb />
Abolish them. Send them to the<lb />
Twilight Zone and let Rod Serl-<lb />
ing deal with them. Just plain get<lb />
rid of the things.<lb />
It's not really the day that's<lb />
bad; we can still have a seven day<lb />
week. The root of the problem is<lb />
really in the name. Monday. Can<lb />
you think of any worse name for<lb />
a day? It even sounds sick.<lb />
I've been told that Mondays<lb />
are named for the moon which<lb />
is bad news. After all, everyone<lb />
knows that weird stuff happens<lb />
because of the moon.<lb />
Werewolves come out, things<lb />
vanish, and even the Cubs win<lb />
because of the moon. 1 want to<lb />
know who the genius is who<lb />
decided to name a whole day<lb />
after it.<lb />
1 have m own theory, though,<lb />
and I think that monsters and<lb />
Mondays are somehow related.<lb />
The boogie man that scared us as<lb />
children really exists, and<lb />
somehow he manages to wreak<lb />
havoc once a week, on his day.<lb />
Over the course of the last few<lb />
months I have only had one Mon-<lb />
day when nothing went wrong,<lb />
and that doesn't count because I<lb />
spent the whole day in bed<lb />
hiding.<lb />
I couldn't even escape the<lb />
Monday monsters on my vaca-<lb />
tion. It was my first real vacation<lb />
in ovei two years, and on that<lb />
Monday my boat broke down, I<lb />
lost my wallet, and I sliced my<lb />

up with my girlfriend, the follow-<lb />
ing Monday I almost lost two<lb />
jobs, and the next, classes<lb />
started. It's got to be more than a<lb />
coincidence. It's the Monday<lb />
Monsters.<lb />
I'm not the only person the<lb />
Monday Monsters are after,<lb />
either. How many people can<lb />
really remember the last time they<lb />
had a good Monday? Ask your<lb />
friends. Those who say they can<lb />
are probably lying through their<lb />
teeth.<lb />
Mondays are days when you<lb />
find that your girlfriend is now<lb />
going with the geek down the hall<lb />
(the guy who drives dad's BMW)<lb />
and that your girlfriend (the<lb />
homely one) isn't really your<lb />
psych professor's daughter.<lb />
It's also the day you discover<lb />
that the paper due this Frida was<lb />
really due last Friday. You then<lb />
discover the drawer into which<lb />
you threw your dirty gym socks<lb />
last week just as the girl who<lb />
thinks you aren't sophisticated<lb />

People have told me all of this<lb />
stuff is just in my mind that all<lb />
of those things happen to me<lb />
because I'm just a klutz, which is<lb />
true to a point. But the clincher<lb />
for me came when I found out<lb />
that September 1 was a Monday.<lb />
Thai's right, remember it?<lb />
Even the drinking age went up on<lb />
a Monday That day the<lb />
Monsters had it out for<lb />
everybody bad. First you woke<lb />
up with a hangover; then you<lb />
remembered it was an illegal<lb />
hangover; then you had a quiz in<lb />
you first class which started five<lb />
minutes after vou rolled out of<lb />
bed.<lb />
Thursday's failed test wa<lb />
because of Monday's fight. And<lb />
that hijacking Friday was pro-<lb />
bably because some whacked-out<lb />
Libyan got indigestion the Mon-<lb />
day before. I read somewhere<lb />
that the Monday before he invad-<lb />
ed France, Hitler cut himself<lb />
shaving. Imagine that WWII<lb />
might have been avoided if Adolf<lb />
had only known that two day stu-<lb />
ble would soon be a fashion rage.<lb />
I would even be willing to bet<lb />
my entire checking and savings<lb />
accounts (all $.69) that Moham-<lb />
mar Gadafi, the Ayatollah<lb />
Khomeni, and Jesse Helms were<lb />
all conceived and born on Mon-<lb />
days. No lie.<lb />
So my plan is to save the world<lb />
by starting a campaign to end<lb />
Mondays. Since Fridays are<lb />
usually so nice, I think we'll just<lb />
have two Fridays a week.<lb />
Of course this means chancing<lb />

I'm not superstitious.<lb />
Moore And Lowe Turn Out<lb />
Top Performance In Movie<lb />
ByEDTOSHACH<lb />
MlWrhr<lb />
Can a one night stand be the<lb />
beginning of a meaningful and<lb />
emotionally rewarding relation-<lb />
ship? About Last Night asks just<lb />
that, and whether or not you<lb />
agree with the answer, the ques-<lb />
tion makes one heck of a movie.<lb />
In About Last Night, Rob<lb />
Lowe and Jim Belushi are<lb />
salesmen for a food service supp-<lb />
ly company who are both caught<lb />
up in the singles scene. Demi<lb />
Moore and Elizabeth Perkins are<lb />
roommates who show up at the<lb />
bar Lowe and Belushi frequent<lb />
after a softball game they all at-<lb />
tended.<lb />
After several lustful looks are<lb />
exchanged, Lowe and Moore go<lb />
back to his apartment, beginning<lb />
an explicit and provocative series<lb />
of one night stands. Belushi and<lb />
Perkins do their best to talk the<lb />
two out of their eventual decision<lb />
to move in together Belushi by<lb />
slighting Moore and constantly<lb />
mourning Lowe's lost freedom,<lb />
and Perkins by constantly<lb />
flooding Moore with her stereop-<lb />
typed ideas of the American<lb />
male.<lb />
Turns out the two sidekicks are<lb />
mostly worried about not seeing<lb />
much of their friends anymore, a<lb />
fear that comes true when Moore<lb />
moves into Lowe's apartment.<lb />
A lot of the good that can be<lb />
said about this picture has to do<lb />
with the screenplay by Tim<lb />
Kazurinsky of Saturday Night<lb />
Live and Denise Declue. Based<lb />
on the play Sexual Perversity In<lb />
Chicago, by David Mamet, its in-<lb />
telligent and witty dialogue is a<lb />
pleasure from beginning to end.<lb />
Most of the good lines go to<lb />
Demi Moore, but she deserves<lb />
them. She and Rob Lowe were<lb />
both in St.Elmo's Fire, and both<lb />
are developing well as actors.<lb />
Jim Belushi is sometimes very<lb />
funny as the unflattering<lb />
stereotype of an urban bachelor.<lb />
His character is at times allowed<lb />
to have a heart; this gives him a<lb />
human edge and makes him a lit-<lb />
tle more real.<lb />
Also turning in a nice perfor-<lb />
mance is Elizabeth Perkins as<lb />
Moore's cynical roommate.<lb />
Although mostly depicted as a<lb />
bitter, lonely person, she too has<lb />
a compassionate side that usually<lb />
turns up in scenes from her job at<lb />
a kindergarten.<lb />
Overall, About Last Night is a<lb />
good way to spend a couple of<lb />
hours. Although at times it is just<lb />
a tad long, the length is never a<lb />
real problem, as the movie takes<lb />
the time it needs to deal with its<lb />
different themes like sexual at-<lb />

ECU Seeks First Win<lb />
Bucs Travel To 10th Ranked Auburn<lb />
Senior taiback Brent Fullwood, the second-leading rusher for Auburn<lb />
behind Bo Jackson last year, ran for 153 yards against ECU in last<lb />
year's game.<lb />
By RICK McCORMAC<lb />
The Pirates, still in search of<lb />
win number one in 1986, will<lb />
travel to Auburn Ala this Satur-<lb />
day to face the 10th ranked<lb />
Tigers.<lb />
The Tigers, who are coming<lb />
off an open date, defeated the<lb />
University of Tennessess-<lb />
Chattanooga 42-14 in their open-<lb />
ing game.<lb />
Auburn is led by an explosive,<lb />
well balanced offense. In addi-<lb />
tion to a fleet of talented running<lb />
backs, Auburn has improved<lb />
their passing game considerably.<lb />
In fact, in the UTC game, the<lb />
Tigers had more yards passing<lb />
than they rushing (248 passing,<lb />
167 rushing) for the first time<lb />
since 1984.<lb />
The Tigers operate offensively<lb />
from the Pro-I, although they do<lb />
employ a number of formations<lb />
depending on the situation.<lb />
Leading the way from the<lb />
tailback position are seniors<lb />
Brent Fullwood and Colis Camp-<lb />
bell. Fullwood was the second-<lb />
leading rusher last year with 684<lb />
yards rushing, with 153 of those<lb />
coming against the Pirates last<lb />
year.<lb />
However, Campbell a red-shirt<lb />
last year is the starter, due to<lb />
academic difficulties Fullwood<lb />
encountered this summer.<lb />
Fullwood was the leading rusher<lb />
in Auburn's opener with 73 yards<lb />
on just nine carries.<lb />
The fullback position is also<lb />
well stocked with junior Reggie<lb />
Ware and senior Tommy Agee<lb />
returning.<lb />
Jeff Burger, who started two<lb />
games last year, will be the<lb />
quarterback. Burger completed<lb />
16 of 25 passes for 245 yards and<lb />
three touchdowns. The 245 yards<lb />
was the highest total for a<lb />
Auburn quarterback since 1972.<lb />
Burger's principal targets were<lb />
Agee, who caught five passes for<lb />
84 yards and sophomore wide<lb />
receiver Lawyer Tillman who<lb />
caught four passes for 92 yards<lb />
Kobe Optimistic About 1986<lb />
Bv SCOTT COOPER<lb />
Co-Sporti Edhor<lb />
Fifth-year ECU head swim<lb />
coach Rick Kobe is nothing short<lb />
of optimistic for his Bucs and the<lb />
upcoming 1986-87 dual-meet<lb />
season as the team has just com-<lb />
pleted their third week of<lb />
workouts.<lb />
"I'm really looking forward<lb />
(to the beginning of the season)<lb />
Kobe said, "it's going to be<lb />
fun<lb />
As a matter of fact, the men's<lb />
and women's squads recently<lb />
finished their running program<lb />
with the annual biathlon. The<lb />
biathlon includes a two-mile<lb />
swim, a six-mile trail run, follow-<lb />
ed by another mile in the pool.<lb />
For the men, junior Patrick<lb />
Brennan finished first in one<lb />
hour and 30 minutes. Sophomore<lb />
David Killeen and senior Stratton<lb />
Smith finished second and third<lb />
respectively.<lb />
Three freshmen took first<lb />
second and third-place honors<lb />
for the women. Pam Wilbanks<lb />
was first with a 1:30.55 time<lb />
followed by Leslie Wilson and<lb />
Robin Wicks.<lb />
The optimism that coach Kobe<lb />
feels is due to the fact that the<lb />
Pirates have a gigantic incoming<lb />
freshman class. The newcomers<lb />
include a dozen freshmen (and<lb />
three additional JC transfers) for<lb />
the men and nine new faces for<lb />
the women.<lb />
"It's the biggest freshmen class<lb />
we've ever had over half our<lb />
team is new Kobe said. "It's a<lb />
talented group of people and<lb />
they're all from very fine<lb />
pograms. They're going to have<lb />
to carry on the tradition.<lb />
"It's by far the most talented<lb />
freshmen class for girls Kobe<lb />
continued. "It's always been the<lb />
philosophy of the team that<lb />
'you're only as good as your<lb />
freshmen class So if you want to<lb />
get better, you have to bring in<lb />
faster swimmers<lb />
Kobe feels that he has ac-<lb />
complished this feat and that in<lb />
order for his team to be suc-<lb />
cessful, they need to get adjusted.<lb />
"If there's a weakness, it's that<lb />
we're so young Kobe explain-<lb />
ed. "We have to get adjusted.<lb />
"Now we're a good swim<lb />
team, at the end of the year, we<lb />
could be a great swim team<lb />
Kobe added.<lb />
Kobe went on to say that the<lb />
team may have some added<lb />
pressure, due to their fine success<lb />
of a year ago. The men, who won<lb />
the conference championship;<lb />
and the women, who came in se-<lb />
cond (to James Madison) last<lb />
year, may face more pressure<lb />
from opponents.<lb />
"Winning again is twice as<lb />
hard Kobe said. "It's a tough<lb />
road to hoe. We have brought in<lb />
enough talent (for the women) to<lb />
catch James Madison this year<lb />
With the success that ECU<lb />
swimming has maintained<lb />
throughout the years, coach<lb />
Kobe sees his Pirates getting the<lb />
opposition's best efforts.<lb />
"Swimming has always been a<lb />
good sport at East Carolina<lb />
Kobe said. "We got a lot of<lb />
respect last year when we travell-<lb />
ed people know we've got a<lb />
good team.<lb />
"Our veterans are all-<lb />
conference performers and all are<lb />
top-quality swimmers and<lb />
divers Kobe said. "It's the best<lb />
mixture (of veterans and<lb />
newcomers) we've ever had<lb />
In terms of this year's competi-<lb />
tion, Kobe mentioned powers like<lb />
Carolina, N.C. State, Duke,<lb />
Navy, Old Dominion and Rich-<lb />
mond as being some of the stiffer<lb />
competiton for the Pirates in<lb />
1986-87. ECU will begin their<lb />
dual meet season on Thurs Oct.<lb />
9 in their own Pentathlon in<lb />
Minges pool.<lb />
Dye Not Taking Bucs Lightly<lb />
By TIM CHANDLER<lb />
xbtui Sporta Editor<lb />
Can the 11th ranked Auburn<lb />
Tigers take East Carolina lightly<lb />
this Saturday?<lb />
According to Auburn head<lb />
coach Pat Dye, they had better<lb />
not.<lb />
"We're not a good enough<lb />
football team at this point to take<lb />
anybody lightly said Dye in a<lb />
telephone interview Wednesday.<lb />
"We, too Oike East Carolina) are<lb />
in a rebuilding and regrouping<lb />
stage with our football team<lb />
Dye went own to comment that<lb />
at this point in the year, it<lb />
wouldn't matter who the opposi-<lb />
tion was, he would still be con-<lb />
cerned about the game.<lb />
"It wouldn't matter if it were<lb />
Tennessee that we were lining up<lb />
against Saturday commented<lb />
Dye. "My main concern now is<lb />
our own football team. We didn't<lb />
exactly set the woods on fire last<lb />
week against (Tennessee) Chat-<lb />
tanooga (42-14)<lb />
Dye also said that he did not<lb />
feel that his players would take<lb />
ECU lightly because of the 11<lb />
game losing streak the Pirates are<lb />
in now or because of the<lb />
preseason spot in the 'Worst 20'<lb />
poll.<lb />
"Our players are not stupid<lb />
said Dye. "They (the Auburn<lb />
players) played against East<lb />
Carolina last year and for the<lb />
first half it was very tough<lb />
(Auburn led only 7-0 at the half).<lb />
They (ECU) have good<lb />
players continued Dye. "They<lb />
hurt us here last year, especially<lb />
with their fullback (Anthony<lb />
Simpson)<lb />
Dye said that after looking at<lb />
the game film of the West<lb />
Charge!<lb />
Former ECU coach Pet Dye, now leading Auburn University, says his<lb />
team would be stupid to take the Pirates lightly this weekend.<lb />
Virginia contest that he was quite<lb />
impressed.<lb />
"I couldn't help but be im-<lb />
pressed with the play of the line<lb />
and and the fullback stated<lb />
Dye. "Defensively they played<lb />
good physical D It was a game<lb />
that East Carolina certainly<lb />
should have won<lb />
Dye expressed a great deal of<lb />
praise for freshman signal-caller<lb />
Charlie Libretto.<lb />
"Based on what I have seen of<lb />
him (Libretto), he is very poised<lb />
and confident said Dye. "I'm<lb />
sure coach Baker is very pleased<lb />
with his performance<lb />
Dye stated that he felt the<lb />
Pirates played a good game<lb />
against N.C. State except for the<lb />
turnovers.<lb />
"They (ECU) moved the ball<lb />
welgainstStateaswelsWest<lb />
"The fans in<lb />
Greenville just need to<lb />
be patient with the<lb />
players and the<lb />
coaches. The East<lb />
Carolina program will<lb />
grow, it is well<lb />
coached Pat Dye<lb />
Virginia stated Dye. "The tur-<lb />
novers in the State game was<lb />
what hurt them<lb />
When the subject of coach<lb />
Baker came up, Dye expressed a<lb />
great deal of respect.<lb />
"I have tremendous respect for<lb />
coach Baker commented Dye.<lb />
"If they (ECU) can win, then he<lb />
is the man to get the job done.<lb />
"If you trace back most of the<lb />
losses that Baker has had, you<lb />
will find that in most cases it was<lb />
because they (ECU) were over-<lb />
matched. But, he has played<lb />
some top teams very close and he<lb />
has had to do much of it on the<lb />
road.<lb />

Dye said that he still has fond<lb />

"I still have strong feelings for<lb />
East Carolina said Dye. "I still<lb />

Sports Fact<lb />
Tues. Sept. 16,1930<lb />
Cleveland pitcher Bob<lb />
Rhoads throws a no-hitter<lb />
against the Boston Red Sox.<lb />
Two years earlier, on an exhibi-<lb />
tion tour of Texas, Rhoads had<lb />
saved the franchise in a most<lb />
unusual manner: the Indians<lb />
had run out of money and<lb />
needed $1,600 for railroads<lb />
tickets from San Antonio to<lb />
Fort Worth, where their next<lb />
game was scheduled. Taking<lb />
matters into his own hands,<lb />
Rhoads visited the local gambl-<lb />
ing establishment, the Crystal<lb />
Palace, and won $1,800 at the<lb />
crap tables. (On the subject of<lb />
crap, the sports team has taken<lb />
quite a hit of it lately, so if this<lb />
is a blank next week, you'll<lb />
know why!)<lb />
and a touchdown.<lb />
The offensive line is anchored<lb />
by center Outland Trophy can-<lb />
didate Ben Tamburello and<lb />
junior tackle Stacey Searels.<lb />
Defensively, Auburn uses a 5-2<lb />
defense similar to the one the<lb />
Pirates faced last week against<lb />
West Virgina. However, the ma-<lb />
jor difference according to Pirate<lb />
assistant Rex Sponhaltz is that<lb />
Auburn is "just as big but<lb />
faster<lb />
Leading the way is sophomore<lb />
All-America candidate Tracy<lb />
Rocker, who was Auburn's<lb />
leading tackier last year with 92<lb />
stops.<lb />
The secondary returns<lb />
preseason All-America candidate<lb />
Tom Powell at free safety and<lb />
junior cornerback Tom Powell.<lb />
One area that looked to be a<lb />
weakness for Auburn in the<lb />
preseason was at the punter spot<lb />
as ALL-America Nate Colbert<lb />
graduated. However, Brian<lb />
Shulman, a sophomore, averaged<lb />
49.8 yards a kick in his first varsi-<lb />
ty game two weeks ago.<lb />
The Pirates will be somewhat<lb />
shorthanded on the trip, as two<lb />
starters will not be able to play<lb />
due to knee injuries. Senior of-<lb />
fensive guard Greg Thomas and<lb />
junior slot back Ron Jones both<lb />
will be out of action due injuries<lb />
from the West Virginia game.<lb />
However, offensive guard Rich<lb />
Autry is expected back in the<lb />
starting lineup, while split end<lb />
Amos Adams also is expected<lb />
back.<lb />

Men Netters Excel In<lb />
Opening Tournament<lb />
By DON RUTLEDGE<lb />
The ECU men's tennis team<lb />
competed in the ODU Fall Invita-<lb />
tional this past weekend, Sept.<lb />
13-14 at the Old Dominion<lb />
University tennis facility.<lb />
Teams competing in the two-<lb />
day event were: ECU, William &<lb />
Mary, Penn State, Maryland and<lb />
ODU. Team scores were not kept<lb />
so that the event would count as<lb />
only one date of play, but ODU<lb />
was "strong all the way-<lb />
through according the ECU<lb />
assistant coach John Anthony,<lb />
and would have earned the most<lb />
points had they been tallied.<lb />
All teams took eight players,<lb />
who were them divided into three<lb />
levels A, B, and C flights. The<lb />
"A" flight players would be the<lb />
best players for each team, the<lb />
"B" flight would include the next<lb />
best, and the "C" flight the last<lb />
spots on the eight-man teams.<lb />
ECU, a young team, with only<lb />
two seniors this year, did better<lb />
than expected against the more<lb />
experienced teams. In particular,<lb />
Jon Melhorn and Dan LaMont<lb />
were impressive, as they com-<lb />
peted in the "A" flight and won<lb />
against veteran opponents.<lb />
Melhorn played exceptionally<lb />
well, winning two tough matches<lb />
against ODU's Schanck and<lb />
Penn State's Mercer, before bow-<lb />
ing in Sunday's championship-<lb />
round final to ODU's Wolf.<lb />
Assistant Coach John Anthony<lb />
lauded Melhorn's performance<lb />
saying, "He played really tough<lb />
all weekend. He could have<lb />
beaten anyone<lb />
LaMont, also competing in the<lb />
"A" flight, lost his first-round<lb />
championship-round match to<lb />
William A Mary's Harvie, but<lb />
turned in a great effort to win an<lb />
exciting match against an ag-<lb />
gressive Sebastian of Penn State,<lb />
a big hitter who charged the net<lb />
behind his powerful shots.<lb />
LaMont, playing "a really in-<lb />
