Annual Camp Held<lb />
Cheerleaders Learn Fundamentals<lb />
By BETH WHICKER<lb />
Assistant News Kdiior<lb />
Champion cheerleading camp<lb />
a. held last week on the ECU<lb />
campus.<lb />
Two-hundred and seventy-<lb />
cheerleaders from 30 local high<lb />
schools, middle schools, and<lb />
junior high schools were taught<lb />
the basics of cheerleading by a<lb />
staff of 11 instructors.<lb />
In addition, cheerleading spon-<lb />
sors were taught the fundamen-<lb />
tals of coaching a squad.<lb />
Three of the camp instructors<lb />
are ECU cheerleaders.<lb />
Instructors were chosen at<lb />
tryouts in Raleigh. Contestants<lb />
were asked to create an original<lb />
dance, cheer, and chant as well as<lb />
perform tumbling stunts and<lb />
jumps.<lb />
Head instructor at the ECU<lb />
camp is Kimberly Pixton. Pixton,<lb />
a member of the award winning<lb />
N.C. State cheerleading squad is<lb />
a junior from Washington, N.C.<lb />
Pixton explained the instruc-<lb />
ting staff will conduct champion<lb />
cheerleading camps over the state<lb />
on local campuses such as UNC<lb />
at Charlotte and Wilmington.<lb />
The camps span a five week<lb />
period.<lb />
"The ECU camp is a<lb />
hometown kind of camp said<lb />
John Morris a senior<lb />
cheerleading instructor from<lb />
Hampton, Virginia.<lb />
"Student's from Greenville to<lb />
Manteo come annually to the<lb />
ECU camp he added.<lb />
"The most exciting and rewar-<lb />
ding aspect of the camp is seeing<lb />
the improvement in ability and<lb />
enthusiasm the girls gain accor-<lb />
ding to Myra Almond, a junior<lb />
instructor from New London,<lb />
N.C.<lb />
"Some of these gifl have<lb />
never been cheerleaders before<lb />
and the camp gives them a better<lb />
perspective of what cheerleading<lb />
is all about said Almond.<lb />
"The cheerleaders improve<lb />
and leave with a better attitude<lb />
said Morris.<lb />
Pixton added cheerleading<lb />
camp was a 'dress rehearsal'<lb />
preparing the squad for the fall<lb />
when the cheering season begins.<lb />
Champion cheerleading camp<lb />
instructors are compensated<lb />
monetarily, but according to Al-<lb />
mond the real satisfaction comes<lb />
in seeing team spirit and en-<lb />
thusiasm develop.<lb />
Cost for the four day camp is<lb />
$93 which includes food, board,<lb />
and instruction.<lb />
The intense instruction in-<lb />
cludes learning 75 chants, 6<lb />
cheers, 4 dances, plus partial<lb />
stunts and mounts.<lb />
Pep rally techniques and<lb />
methods are also included in the<lb />
four day instruction.<lb />
Throughout the camp activities<lb />
such as swimming and show night<lb />
were planned for the par-<lb />
ticipants.<lb />
During show night participants<lb />
entertained the staff and other<lb />
campers with skits and imitations<lb />
of instructors.<lb />
At the close of the camp<lb />
awards are given to the best<lb />
squads.<lb />
The supersharp award is given<lb />
to a squad with superior execu-<lb />
tion.<lb />
The super leadership award is<lb />
given to a person or squad that<lb />
exemplifies qualities necessary to<lb />
boost school spirit and en-<lb />

Rape Suspect Nabbed<lb />
By Campus Police<lb />
By LYNN WEAVER<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Early Monday morning ECU<lb />
Campus Police apprehended a<lb />
suspect in the July 6 rape that<lb />
started at the Mendenhall Stu-<lb />
dent Center. ECU Police grabbed<lb />
the suspect after the officers<lb />
observed a girl scream and flee<lb />
from the suspect.<lb />
At approximately 3 a.m Lt.<lb />
E. L. Suggs and Cpl. B. G. Hud-<lb />
son, who were parked in separate<lb />
vehicles in the parking lot located<lb />
at Ninth and Cotanche,<lb />
observed a white male and female<lb />
walking south on Cotanche<lb />
Street.<lb />
As the couple entered the park-<lb />
ing lot, the girl jerked away from<lb />
the man and started screaming<lb />
and ran away. The man turned<lb />
and began to chase the subject,<lb />
who fled west on 9th then south<lb />
onto Forbes Street.<lb />
The subject was apprehended<lb />
at the 900 block of Forbes Street<lb />
and taken to McDonald's park-<lb />
ing lot. The subject was placed in<lb />
the custody of Greenville Police<lb />
Sgt. Joe Simonowich.<lb />
Suggs and Hudson, then,<lb />
returned to search the scene. The<lb />
girl said the subject had a knife.<lb />
Suggs and Hudson located the<lb />
weapon and turned the evidence<lb />
over to the Greenville Police.<lb />
Lt. Keith Knox said, "We<lb />
would like to commend our of-<lb />
ficers for being so observant and<lb />
quickly apprehending and detain-<lb />
ing the suspect and rendering<lb />
assistance to the victim and to the<lb />
Greenville Police Department<lb />
He added, "We hope that the<lb />
cooperation between ECU<lb />
Department of Public Safety and<lb />
Greenville Police Department<lb />
will continue and improve, enabl-<lb />
ing us to provide a safer com-<lb />
munity in which to live in<lb />
often called "Star Wars" and<lb />
to await a report from three U.S.<lb />
envoys to Western Europe and<lb />
Asia.<lb />
The three emissaries, Paul H.<lb />
Nitze, Edward Rowny and H.<lb />
Allen Holmes, were to solicit the<lb />
views of allied governments.<lb />
White House spokesman Edward<lb />
P. Djerejian said Reagan would<lb />
send his reply within 10 days.<lb />
According to one of the of-<lb />
ficials, both of whom spoke on<lb />
condition of anonymity, the Pen-<lb />
tagon has sought to counter ad-<lb />
vice from other parts of the<lb />
government that Reagan should<lb />
pledge not to deploy the futuristic<lb />
technology for five to six years.<lb />
Gorbachev said at the summit<lb />
with Reagan last November in<lb />
Geneva that the Star Wars pro-<lb />
gram would extend the nuclear<lb />
arms competition into a<lb />
dangerous, new sphere. The<lb />
Soviets as do many U.S. arms<lb />
control experts contend<lb />
deployment is banned by the 1972<lb />
Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty.<lb />
The Soviets have proposed an<lb />
agreement not to deploy the<lb />
technology for 15 to 20 years, of-<lb />
fering in exchange to negotiate a<lb />
reduction of more than 50 per-<lb />
cent in U.S. and Soviet strategic<lb />
nuclear bombers, missiles and<lb />
submarines, the official said.<lb />
The Pentagon's suggestion that<lb />
Reagan turn Moscow down is<lb />
based on concern that the Soviets<lb />
eventually would try to extend<lb />
the ban indefinitely and that any<lb />
pledge to defer Star Wars deploy-<lb />
ment would send the wrong<lb />
political message to Congress, the<lb />
official said.<lb />
"The essential difference is<lb />
whether or not there is some par-<lb />
tial step in the area of SDI (the<lb />
Strategic Defense Initiative) he<lb />
said. The official stressed that the<lb />
president and all his advisers were<lb />
in agreement that research must<lb />
go on and that the Soviets' defini-<lb />
tion of the laboratory work per-<lb />
missible under the 1972 Anti-<lb />
Ballistic Missile Treaty was too<lb />
j)<lb />
program is under attack<lb />
on Capitol Hill because of an<lb />
overall budget squeeze and also<lb />
because of widespread skepticism<lb />
that a less-than-perfect shield<lb />
coid deter attack. Theadministra-<lb />
tion has requested $5.4 billion for<lb />
next year. The Senate Armed Ser-<lb />
vices Committee recommended<lb />
last month a reduction to $3.2<lb />
billion.<lb />
Reagan has said the technology-<lb />
would not be ready for deploy-<lb />
ment while he was still in office<lb />
and that he would consult with<lb />
the Soviets before he took that<lb />
step. Still, the Soviets are eager to<lb />
tighten the language of the 1972<lb />
ABM treaty, which permits either<lb />
side to withdraw from its restric-<lb />
tions after giving six months'<lb />
notice.<lb />
Reagan announced in May that<lb />
he would abandon another major<lb />
U.SSoviet treaty, the 1979<lb />
SALT II accord limiting various<lb />
kinds of strategic weapons. He<lb />
has accused the Soviets of<lb />
violating both accords.<lb />
At a White House ceremony-<lb />
Monday protesting Soviet control<lb />
of most of Eastern Europe, the<lb />
president said: "Meaningful pro-<lb />
gress can be realized by facing<lb />
our differences and not glossing<lb />
them over. I believe the Soviet<lb />
Union wants better relations It<lb />
is time to see the follow-through<lb />
to see deeds now and not<lb />
words<lb />
The Soviets made their latest<lb />
arms reduction proposal June 11<lb />
in Geneva, tying it as they<lb />
always do to restraints on<lb />
"Star Wars The Geneva<lb />
negotiations are in recess until<lb />
September.<lb />
The proposal and Gorbachev's<lb />
June 23 letter wree discussed at<lb />
the White House Friday. Ad-<lb />
ministration officials were reluc-<lb />
tant to provide any information<lb />
about the deliberations to the<lb />
public. An information leak last<lb />

Drinking<lb />
Dealing With The New Drinking Age<lb />
Sometime this week each student<lb />
will receive a polite letter from Dr.<lb />
Elmer Meyer, vice chancellor for<lb />
student life. The content of the let-<lb />
ter will explain the first and most<lb />
effective step ECU will take in<lb />
handling the change in the drinking<lb />
age.<lb />
The ietter says that even though<lb />
the state legislature has set Sept. 1<lb />
as the official deadline by which the<lb />
drinking age must be changed from<lb />
19 to 21, ECU has chosen to<lb />
recognize the change on campus ef-<lb />
fective Aug. 1.<lb />
The initial response to this state-<lb />
ment is usually something akin to,<lb />
"it's bad enough the state is raising<lb />
the drinking age, now the Universi-<lb />
ty has to beat them to the punch<lb />
But when you think about it,<lb />
there is nothing else they can do.<lb />
The administration is just doing<lb />
their best to avoid the inevitable<lb />
difficulties that are inherent in such<lb />
a law change. They're trying to<lb />
cope as best they can while main-<lb />
taining good studeniUniversity<lb />
relations.<lb />
The question that remains,<lb />
however, is how else will the law<lb />
change effect students and what is<lb />
the University doing to cope with<lb />
the situation?<lb />
Last October, Dr. Meyer assign-<lb />
ed the ECU AlcoholDrug Educa-<lb />
tion Committee to study the impact<lb />
on this campus of the new drinking<lb />
age law, and to make recommenda-<lb />
tions regarding how the University<lb />
should respond.<lb />
The resulting report was a reflec-<lb />
tion of an open minded committee<lb />
that chose to face the realities of the<lb />
situation with a healthy attitude.<lb />
The committee, for example,<lb />
took the approach that realisticly<lb />
there would be very strong feelings<lb />
concerning the new law and that<lb />
those feelings should be considered<lb />
while implementing new policies. In<lb />
short, the committee didn't make a<lb />
move without considering the<lb />
students first.<lb />
Another plus was the way in<lb />
which the committee chose to inter-<lb />
pret the new law. Keeping in mind<lb />
the new law allows for a maximum<lb />
fine of only $25, the committee sug-<lb />
gested a moderate approach to the<lb />
issue, one of "sensitivity, wisdom,<lb />
and reasonableness<lb />
This is not to say the University<lb />
will turn its back on on those who<lb />
break the law; rather it will ap-<lb />
proach the situation with<lb />
understanding. At least, this is the<lb />
philosophy expressed by the com-<lb />
mittee, application of said<lb />
philosophy is something we'll have<lb />
to see for ourselves.<lb />
In any case, the University has<lb />
taken the right approach. They<lb />
understand that college students<lb />
will drink what they want when<lb />
they please, regardless of the legal<lb />
drinking age; and that any change<lb />
in drinking habits will come<lb />
gradually if at all.<lb />
In fact, the committee's report<lb />
quotes a survey conducted by Pro-<lb />
fessor Jerry Lotterhos with students<lb />
enrolled in alcohol abuse classes<lb />
here at ECU that helps to support<lb />
this point of view.<lb />
"Of 200 students surveyed, most<lb />
of whom can presently drink legal-<lb />
ly, but who will lose that right<lb />
under the new law, not a single stu-<lb />
dent said they intended to stop<lb />
drinking under the new law. Most<lb />
felt they would simply drink in<lb />
situations where they would not be<lb />
likely to be apprehended<lb />
Of course, this also means no<lb />
public drinking, which, in turn,<lb />
spells trouble for downtown mer-<lb />
chants. Perhaps the biggest and<lb />
most immediate effect the age<lb />
change will have will be on local<lb />
nightclubs. Most clubs will either<lb />
close down or turn private, serving<lb />
only persons 21 years of age.<lb />
To counter this effect the com-<lb />
mittee recommended that the<lb />
University support the establish-<lb />
ment of a non-alcoholic nightclub<lb />
which will offer good food and<lb />
quality entertainment; something<lb />
few of the nightclubs presentIv of-<lb />
fer.<lb />
Also, the University has foreseen<lb />
increased participation in campus<lb />
sponsored programs and athletics<lb />
and they will monitor these pro-<lb />
grams in the near future to see if ex-<lb />
pansion is warrented.<lb />
Undoubtedly, the change in the<lb />
drinking age will have a signifigant<lb />
and lasting effect on the campus<lb />
and the community. Fortunately<lb />
for us the University has an-<lb />
ticipated these effects and has<lb />
adopted a healthy, reasonable at-<lb />
titude toward working with the<lb />
students to deal with them.<lb />

Story May Leave False Impression<lb />
Dear Editor:<lb />
I am concerned that The East Carolinian<lb />
readers may form an erroneous impression<lb />
based on your article "Profs Harass<lb />
Women" in the July 16 issue. The piece<lb />
reports on a Glamour magazine article in<lb />
which administrators of colleges are said to<lb />
prefer that students who are being sexually<lb />
harassed cope with the problem privately<lb />
rather than acknowledge it.<lb />
This may be the case for some ad-<lb />
ministrators at other schools but it does<lb />
not apply to us. ECU has a policy pro-<lb />
hibiting sexual harassment and when such<lb />
an offense is reported to us, wc take steps<lb />
to insure that the harassment stops. But if<lb />
we don't know about the problem, we<lb />
can't help. If sexual harassment occurs,<lb />
students should report it immediately.<lb />

Defending The Porn Commission<lb />
The attack on the report of the por-<lb />
nography commission continues. Its<lb />
weapons are ridicule and simulated fear.<lb />
The ridicule centers on the idea of a<lb />
dozen investigators traveling in-<lb />
dustriously through pornland taking<lb />
notes; the fear is expressed in terms of<lb />
taking from the people what is theirs<lb />
On The Right<lb />
By WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY<lb />
through the patrimony of the First<lb />
Amendment.<lb />
It is worth, I think, a moment or two<lb />
to reflect on the inherent position of<lb />
those who find the whole anti-porn ven-<lb />
ture so preposterous. What emerges is a<lb />
contempt for those who accepted the<lb />
commission to investigate the volume<lb />
of the porn industry and the reaches ol<lb />
its perversity, and to inquire whether<lb />
that industry induces anti-social<lb />
behavior and a protective feeling<lb />
toward the porn merchants.<lb />
Here is a nice example. Robert Scheer<lb />
ol the I.os Angeles Times and Playboy,<lb />
describing the investigative activities of<lb />
the commission, came to an on-the-spot<lb />
visit to "one of those establishments" in<lb />
Houston that sells porn and otherwise<lb />
caters to its customers in individual<lb />
booths.<lb />
"As everyone watched, a bullet-<lb />
headed vice cop yanked open the door<lb />
(of a booth) and announced in a loud<lb />
voice, 'And here we have two men<lb />
engaged in an act of oral copulation<lb />
The men looked up in astonishment at<lb />
the eleven commissioners<lb />
Scheer's comment: "What business<lb />
was it of a U.S. Commission on Por-<lb />
nography to get down and dirty into the<lb />
pathetic attempts of some of this world's<lb />
most forlorn, desperate and lonely in-<lb />
habitants to find a few moments of<lb />
whatever brings them as close to joy as<lb />
they will get? These were two human be-<lb />
ings<lb />
It apparently docs not occur to the<lb />
critics that precisely it is a concern for<lb />
human beings that animates those who<lb />
worry about the volume of porn being<lb />
manufactured. The scene within the<lb />
booth was a pretty clear expression ol<lb />
the three-dimentional facilities being<lb />
provided by those porn merchants<lb />
whose services extend beyond merely<lb />
graphic displays of carnal activity.<lb />
And the intellectual argument has to<lb />
be rescued, that argument being that<lb />
society has a stake in what appetites are<lb />
being slaked and stimulated by the free<lb />
market.<lb />
The apparent rubric hv which they are<lb />
being guided is as simple as tins: I here is<lb />
manifestly an appetite for porn I here<lb />
are people willing to cater to this ap-<lb />
petite. Why should not the willing buyer<lb />
and the willing seller enter into conven-<lb />
tional arrangements'1<lb />
Surely the reason tor it is that lust is<lb />
an appetite that needs to be regulated.<lb />
We live in a free society that, just to<lb />
begin with, regulates that appetite by<lb />
authorizing only a single marriage at one<lb />
time. I he mere assertion of the authori-<lb />
ty to do so distinguishes the attitude ol<lb />
societ) toward sex as a civil relationship<lb />
from other appetites<lb />
If power is what you wish, you can<lb />
work for it subject to the restraints ol<lb />
the maket, namely democratic ac-<lb />
quiescence. And even then, you are sub<lb />
ject to certain denials in the exercise of<lb />
power specified by the Bill of Rights<lb />
Gluttony would be an example of an<lb />
appetite society adopts no legal position<lb />
about. Cooking editors and food writers<lb />
are free to cater to the obese in such a<lb />
way as to tempt them to even greater<lb />
obesity.<lb />
The only sanction against obesity in<lb />
our society is social: People are generally<lb />
put off by overweight, which is why<lb />
diets and diet books are also an industry.<lb />
But a sophisticated society<lb />
acknowledges that sex is often an unruly<lb />
passion, and for that reason lust is<lb />
stimulated with some sense of civil pro-<lb />
priety. It is still illegal to wander naked<lb />
down the streets, because modesty of a<lb />
rudimentary kind is acknowledged to be<lb />
a civil interest.<lb />
Sex leads to the creation of what Mr<lb />
Scheer, with an exclamation point,<lb />
would call a human being! A human be-<lb />
ing carelessly eventuating from booth-<lb />
type sexual encounters is a heavy respon-<lb />
sibility, ostensibly of the parents, actual-<lb />
ly of the state abandoned childrei<lb />
properly provided tor by the state.<lb />
What astonishes is that the porn mer<lb />
chants should suddenly find themse<lb />
the objects of concern by so mai <lb />
critics. Robert Scheer introduces<lb />
member of the commissiion as foil<lb />
"Father Bruce Ritter (is) a Car<lb />

Keeping Latin America Solvent<lb />
TW Sr HrpaMk<lb />
The money it's going to take to keep Latin America solvent<lb />
can only come from three sources: (1) the United States, other<lb />
Western governments, and the multilateral lending agencies<lb />
Western taxpayers support; (2) the Latin countries<lb />
themselves; or (3) the commerial banks that loaned the money<lb />
in the first place.<lb />
So far, the first two have been stuck with the tab. Debtor<lb />
countries have gotten new credits from the International<lb />
Monetary Fund or the World Bank in exchange for adopting<lb />
economic austerity measures. These measures enable them to<lb />
keep up interest payments to the banks but punish their<lb />
already impoverished citizens.<lb />
And neither taxpayers north of the border nor campesinos<lb />
south of it have gotten much in return for their sacrifice.<lb />
Austerity measures have dried up what were once markets for<lb />
the goods American workers produce. Latin countries are no<lb />
longer able to sustain economic growth.<lb />
Meanwhile, falling oil prices once again have brought Mex-<lb />
ico near the brink of default. There is still an ominous<lb />
possibility that a major debtor, or a group of them, may<lb />
simply say "enough" and repudiate the debts.<lb />
Faced with the failure of the debt policy that the Reagan<lb />
administration has followed up to now. Treasury Secretary<lb />
James Baker introduced a new plan last October. Billed as a<lb />
comprehensive solution to the debt crisis, the Baker plan call-<lb />
ed for $9 billion in new lending by the World Bank and the<lb />
Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to Latin countries<lb />
over the next three years and $20 billion in new commercial<lb />
bank lending.<lb />
The conditions for these new credits would emphasize free<lb />
markets rather than austerity. Debtor countries would have to<lb />
trim their bloated state sectors, stop protecting inefficient<lb />
Firms from import competition, and open up to foreign in-<lb />
vestment.<lb />
But the Baker plan has never really gotten off the ground.<lb />
Even if the new credits it offered were sufficient which they<lb />
probably weren't relieving the debt burden by piling on<lb />
more debt is a dubious idea.<lb />
Nationalistic Latin governments bristled at making specfic<lb />
economic reforms a condition of U.S. aid, especially given<lb />
the harsh austerity they've already had imposed on them. In<lb />
any case, commercial banks were reluctant to throw another<lb />
$20 billion worth of good money after bad.<lb />
Senator Bill Bradley of New jersey has a better idea His<lb />
proposal for the debt problem also would have the World<lb />
Bank and development banks boost lending by $9 billion ovei<lb />
the next three years. But instead of counting on commercial<lb />
banks to lend more money, Bradley would require them Jo<lb />
slice three percentage points off both the interest and prin<lb />
cipal Latin debtors owe. (Government lenders would take the<lb />
same hit.)<lb />
That's $57 billion worth of relief over the next three years.<lb />
$42 billion of which would still have to make internal reforms<lb />
to qualify, but the specific measures would be left up to them<lb />
This has the advantage of actually reducing the debt burden<lb />
the Latin countries carry, rather than just providing them<lb />
with an opportunity to go deeper into hock. We're not sure<lb />
that it's really possible for the sclerotic Latin economies to get<lb />
growing again without taking some of the market-oriented<lb />
steps the Baker plan would have required.<lb />
It may well be, however, that the countries are more likely<lb />
to act if they feel the decisions are their own. And with the<lb />
poor already squeezed dry, maybe Latin governments would<lb />
take advantage of Bradley aid to go after the biggest untap-<lb />
ped source of funds in their society: the billions in capital<lb />
flight dollars their elites have socked away in U.S. and other<lb />
foreign banks.<lb />
But best of all, the Bradley proposal would finally make the<lb />
commercial banks pay their share of the cost of managing the<lb />
debt crisis. Back in the 1970s, the banks were only too happy<lb />
to lend Latin America all the money it wanted, but they have<lb />
so far managed to stick others with the losses they deserve for<lb />
their folly. It's way past time for the banks to pay their share,<lb />
and the Bradley plan would make them do so. After all, a<lb />
round of defaults is a bigger threat to them than to anyone<lb />
else.<lb />

Directed by Edgar Loessin and<lb />
starring Joseph Mascolo and<lb />
Frank Runyeon (both of daytime<lb />
television fame), Deathtrap is a<lb />
proud addition to ECU Summer<lb />
Theatre's superlative season.<lb />
Deathtrap is a sometimes<lb />
tense, sometimes hilarious play-<lb />
that centers around Sidney Bruhl<lb />
(Mascolo), a has-been mystery<lb />
playwright who receives a<lb />
guaranteed-hil play in the mail<lb />
from young protegee Clifford<lb />
Anderson (Runyeon) who desires<lb />
Bruhl's opinion on this, his first<lb />
pla. Bruhl is envious of Ander-<lb />
son's work and jokingly suggests<lb />
to his wife Myra (Tracy<lb />
Donohue) that he would even kill<lb />
for this story. From this beginn-<lb />
ing evolves a winding plot that<lb />
gives as many suprises as laughs.<lb />
The dialogue in Deathtrap <lb />
especially Bruhl's is witty in a<lb />
relaxed, intelligent way that pro-<lb />
vides a refreshing contrast to the<lb />
anxiety created by the storyline.<lb />
Mascolo delivers these lines well,<lb />
and with the calm, intellectual<lb />
tones that they deserve. Mascolo<lb />
really works Bruhl's comic side,<lb />
and brings to the role experience<lb />
gained in television, film and<lb />
Broadway plays.<lb />
Also deserving of more than a<lb />
few good words is Frank<lb />
Runyeon as the young would-be<lb />
mystery writer Clifford Ander-<lb />
son. Runyeon is most well known<lb />
for his role on CBS' "As The<lb />
World Turns" as romantic hero<lb />
Steve Andropoulous, but adapts<lb />
quite well to the sometimes<lb />
childlike, sometimes intense and<lb />
worldly character he plays in<lb />
Deathtrap.<lb />
Fine performances were turned<lb />
in as well by Tracy Donohue (of<lb />
ECU's Theatre Arts Department)<lb />
as Myra Bruhl, and Rick Rhodes<lb />
as Sidney Bruhl's lawyer Porter<lb />
Milgrim. Especially funny in her<lb />

After the show, Poole said that<lb />

Sequel To 'Alien9<lb />
Retains Dark Mood<lb />
By ED TOSHACH<lb />
Greenville band Soul Train played at the New Dell Saturday.<lb />
In a medium flooded with se-<lb />
quels, it's easy to dismiss the<lb />
newest "part tl" without a se-<lb />
cond thought. The regular movie<lb />
patron who avoids Aliens,<lb />
however, will be cheating himself<lb />
out of one of the best science fic-<lb />
tion movies in years.<lb />
At the end of Alien.<lb />
predecessor to Aliens, Ripley<lb />
(Sigourney Weaver) had finally<lb />
defeated the acid-blooded slob-<lb />
bering monster that had killed<lb />
her crew, and was settling in for a<lb />
trip home in suspended anima-<lb />
tion. The creature was vanquish-<lb />
ed; everything was hunky-dory.<lb />
Aliens begins as Ripley's<lb />
escape craft is found and Ripley<lb />
is brought out of suspended<lb />
animation. We find that while<lb />
she had been sleeping peacefully,<lb />
the planet where the crew of the<lb />
Nostromo had encountered hun-<lb />
dreds of eggs like that from<lb />
which the creature came has<lb />
been colonized. Since com-<lb />
munications have been<lb />
mysteriously cut off with that<lb />
planet, the company that Ripley<lb />
works for recruits her to accom-<lb />
pany, as advisor, a platoon of in-<lb />
terplanetary marines assigned to<lb />
check out the colony. Without<lb />
giving away too much, things get<lb />
real messy real fast.<lb />
Fans of the dark, serious mood<lb />
in Alien will not be disappointed<lb />
with the sequel; there are plenty<lb />
of scenes with creatures hiding<lb />
around dark, high-tech corners.<lb />
Like its forerunner. AHens means<lb />
business from the word go. The<lb />
special effects, although<lb />
superlative, are never the center<lb />
of attention; rather they are the<lb />
natural backdrop for the setting.<lb />
Even under such conditions, it is<lb />
impossible to take the effects and<lb />
futuristic hardware for granted.<lb />
The Aliens themselves are im-<lb />
peccably lifelike, especially in the<lb />
multi-legged stage whe the em-<lb />
bryos are deposited in human<lb />
hosts. We never look at the alien<lb />
creatures as technological con<lb />
structions, but accept them as<lb />
characters. Mean characters<lb />
Another plus for -Miens is a<lb />
slight change in overall tone from<lb />
the first movie. Aliens is not just<lb />
a scary tale about people being<lb />
salivated on by malevolent ex-<lb />
traterrestrials, but it is the story<lb />
of a battle. The characters are<lb />
heroic yet human and the plot has<lb />
given up some (but not much) of<lb />
the stark terror of the original for<lb />
the constant tension of a conflict.<lb />
The acting is, without excep-<lb />
tion, of good quality, and<lb />
especially fine performances are<lb />
turned in by Weaver as Ripley<lb />
and Michael Beihn as Hicks, a<lb />
marine who gracefully handles a<lb />
command thrust on him by cir-<lb />
cumstances.<lb />
Much more can be said about<lb />
A Hem, but not without giving<lb />
away some of its many surprises.<lb />
It is one of the best movies so far<lb />
this year, so don't miss it.<lb />

Artifacts<lb />
Found Under<lb />
Corn Field<lb />
Continued from page 5<lb />
In May of 1985, Green and<lb />
James Holley, a research assis-<lb />
tant, set out to conduct a brief<lb />
follow-up survey near the area<lb />
where the other archaeologists<lb />
had searched. After one and one-<lb />
half weeks and nearly 700 disap-<lb />
pointing acres, Holley found<lb />
some small pieces of pottery in a<lb />
corn field next to a field thai had<lb />
been checked the year before.<lb />
The pottery shards were of the<lb />
type associated with the late 16th<lb />
Century coastal Indian culture.<lb />
"They were the first artifacts<lb />
from the last portion of the late<lb />
Woodland Period (circa A.D.<lb />
1500-1650) that had been found<lb />
in Hyde County Green said.<lb />
Combing the field, they col-<lb />
lected more pieces of the pottery<lb />
called "Colington Simple-<lb />
Stamped Ware The pottery is<lb />
characterized by the mixture of<lb />
crushed shell in the clay and a<lb />
surface that is stamped with a<lb />
crude criss-crossed pattern of<lb />
lines. They also picked up<lb />
numerous pieces of smoking<lb />
pipes and flakes of stone that had<lb />
been chipped off in the process of<lb />
making projectile points and<lb />
other tools.<lb />
"We felt that it was not a tem-<lb />
porary camp site. It appeared as a<lb />
good possible candidate for the<lb />
village of Pomeiooc Green<lb />
said.<lb />
With the possible discovery of<lb />
Pomeiooc, ECU and Green have<lb />
received $10,000 in grants from<lb />
the America's 400th Anniversary<lb />
Committee for additional studj<lb />
at the site. An acre of corn was<lb />
purchased and was scraped away<lb />
with several inches of topsoil<lb />
Beneath the topsoil. Green found<lb />
hundreds of dark, round stains<lb />
where posts had once been<lb />
driven.<lb />
Work at the site, this year, will<lb />
continue through next week.<lb />
Green said that future work will<lb />
depend on the availability of fun-<lb />
ding.<lb />
