The University of North<lb />
Carolina Association of Student<lb />
Governments kicked off their<lb />
lobbying campaign last Wendes-<lb />
day against Governor Martin's<lb />
proposal tuition increases<lb />
Governor Martin proposes to<lb />
increase in-state tuition 3.2 per-<lb />
cent and hike out-of-state tuition<lb />
12.3 percent.<lb />
The UNCASG wants both in-<lb />
state and out-of-state tui'ion to<lb />
remain at 1985-86 levels.<lb />
Steve Cunanan, SGA president<lb />
who represented ECU in the UN-<lb />
CASG, said Martin wants to take<lb />
the revenue earned in the tuition<lb />
hike and put it in the General<lb />
Fund.<lb />
L NCASG's position, accor-<lb />
ding to Cunanan, is to place any<lb />
revenues from any increases back<lb />
into the University system.<lb />
"If Martin does that (put<lb />
revenues in the General Fund)<lb />
Cunanan said, "we will never see<lb />
that money again<lb />
Cunanan reiterated, "If there<lb />
has to be an increase, the leas-<lb />
Martin could do is give the<lb />
money back to the schools<lb />
The UNCASG passed a resolu-<lb />
tion outlining their reasons for<lb />
opposing Martin's tuition in-<lb />
crease.<lb />
The resolution said that<lb />
because the Gramm-Rudman<lb />
Hollings Acl will reduce financial<lb />
aid to student- h 16.5 mil<lb />
dollars, the UNCASG claims the<lb />
cost of a public post secondary<lb />
educaton is past the ability of a<lb />
working class family to pay.<lb />
In addition, the UNCASG<lb />
maintains the cost of non-tuition<lb />
expenses like housing, books,<lb />
and food has increased faster<lb />
than inflation.<lb />
"We (the student body<lb />
presidents) don't think the<lb />
lawmakers understand what goes<lb />
into an education today<lb />
Cunanan said. "They don't<lb />
realize that just this year rent has<lb />
increased 33 percent<lb />
In their lobbying effort, the<lb />
UNCASG met with It. Governor<lb />
Bob Jordan and House Speaker<lb />
Liston Ramses and about 100<lb />
state legislators<lb />
Cunanan said, "They sym-<lb />
pathized with us about the in-<lb />
state tuition, but they were not<lb />
too positive about the out-of-<lb />
state increase<lb />
Cunanan said this dicotomv is<lb />
unfortunate bu: to be expected.<lb />
He said out-of-state and interna-<lb />
tional students add much to ;<lb />
lege life and to lose some because<lb />
they are unable to afford tuition<lb />
would be regretable.<lb />
While in Raleigh, the IV<lb />

funding for new facilities and<lb />

SGA Cabinet Positions Reactivated<lb />
ByRl'STA HARRINGTON<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Beginning next -emester, the<lb />
SGA will be re-activating it's<lb />
cabinet positions for the first<lb />
time in about four years, accor-<lb />
ding to SGA president Steve<lb />
Cunanan.<lb />
Cunanan believes this move<lb />
w ill make good his campaign pro-<lb />
mise to get more people involved<lb />
in student government, as well as<lb />
help the SGA executive council<lb />
make "better decisions, based on<lb />
fact, not on their own beliefs<lb />
"The purpose of this re-<lb />
activated body will be to advise<lb />
both the SGA senate and the ex-<lb />
ecutive council on issues said<lb />
Cunanan. who adds the legwork<lb />
done by the cabinet members will<lb />
help in a more qualitative deci-<lb />
sion making process.<lb />
The cabinet itself will consist<lb />
of six cabinet members, each con-<lb />
centrating on a specific area of<lb />
interest. Those areas consist of:<lb />
Academic Affairs, Community<lb />
Affairs, Minority Affairs, Inter-<lb />
nal Affairs, Consumer Affairs,<lb />
and Publicity. Cunanan said the<lb />
cabinet is basically designed on<lb />
the framework of the previous<lb />
cabinet system, but with a few<lb />
changes.<lb />
Heading the new cabinet wiil<lb />
be the SGA vice-president,<lb />
whereas under the old system, it<lb />
was headed by the president.<lb />
Cunanan believes the old system<lb />
was basically a good system, but<lb />
with the increased red tape and<lb />
"political appointments the<lb />
system had to be discontinued.<lb />
Under the new cabinet system,<lb />
Cunanan wishes to incorporate<lb />

A program designed to en-<lb />

ECU. Mary Ann Rose initiated<lb />
the first Science Track Enhance-<lb />

the assistant to the Chancellor for<lb />
special projects.<lb />
Twenty-five ninth graders were<lb />
selected for the program which<lb />
continues until July 3rd.<lb />
The students were selected<lb />
from RECAST, a community-<lb />
based group which focuses on en-<lb />

RECAST club in Greenville were<lb />
asked to reccommend applicants<lb />
for the program.<lb />
Students participating in the<lb />
program will be placed under the<lb />
guidance of an ECU faculty or<lb />
staff member with whom they<lb />
will assist with various science<lb />
and math projects.<lb />
Six to seven hours of the stu-<lb />
dent's day will be spent with<lb />
faculty projects. In return, they<lb />
will receive a small stipend for<lb />
their efforts.<lb />
ECU's faculty and staff will<lb />
act as "mentors" for the selected<lb />
students. "A caring and inspiring<lb />
individual can often make the<lb />
difference between pursuing or<lb />
abandoning a career choice<lb />
said Rose.<lb />
"When mentors adopt<lb />
students for the two week period,<lb />
we believe that there is greater<lb />
likelihood of their pursuing<lb />
science and mathematics<lb />
careers she added.<lb />
According to Christine Fitch,<lb />
director of STEP and grants of-<lb />
ficer for the ECU School of<lb />
Education, "One thing that's dif-<lb />
ferent about this program is that<lb />
we're not looking for gifted and<lb />
talented students; we're looking<lb />
for the average student who has<lb />
potential<lb />
"STEP will introduce students<lb />
to science careers, the world of<lb />
work, and aim at raising their<lb />
aspirations for college by ex-<lb />
posure to a university setting<lb />
she said.<lb />
Fitch explained that selected<lb />
students will experience the prac-<lb />
tical side of the jobs and learn<lb />
that jobs are not just glamour.<lb />
"They'll be exposed to the nuts<lb />
and bolts of the field of science<lb />
Students participating in the<lb />
program enjoy the challenge of<lb />
working with special projects as<lb />
well as the atmosphere of ECU's<lb />
campus.<lb />
Evenings are set aside for<lb />
seminars including topics such as<lb />
career choices, job expectations,<lb />
job performance and behavior,<lb />
and money management.<lb />
According to Fitch the<lb />
seminars will be lightly struc-<lb />
tured, yet educational. The<lb />
students wiil get a chance to share<lb />
their reactions with the other par-<lb />
ticipants since everybody will be<lb />
working in a different area.<lb />
The program is offered<lb />
through funding from ECU and<lb />
outside donations. There is no<lb />
cost for the students to attend the<lb />
program.<lb />
"Our intentions are to con-<lb />
tinue and expand the program<lb />
added Fitch.<lb />
dent life, which includes both the<lb />
campus and the community<lb />
"It will allow for more student<lb />
input, where before we just<lb />
couldn't get somebody to these<lb />
functions where the students<lb />
could voice themselves said<lb />
Cunanan.<lb />
"The cabinet will have no<lb />
powers outside of its advisory<lb />
and fact finding functions said<lb />
Cunanan, "but will hopefully<lb />
make more information available<lb />
to the senate, enabling them to<lb />
make better decisions<lb />
The SGA has already received<lb />
about 30 applications for the<lb />
cabinet positions, and Cunanan<lb />
hopes to work from a field of<lb />
about 60 applicants. The deadline<lb />
for filing an application will be<lb />
September 15, 1986, and ap-<lb />

ROME (UPI) Attorney<lb />
General Edwin Meese and In-<lb />
terior Minister Oscar Luigi<lb />
Scalfaro signed an agreement to-<lb />
day for Italy and the United<lb />
States to join forces in the fight<lb />
against international terrorism.<lb />
Meese said the accord provides<lb />
for "policy, procedure and doc-<lb />
trinal exchanges" of information<lb />
and intelligence and will make ex-<lb />
tradition easier between the two<lb />
countries in terrorist cases.<lb />
But, he said, it does not pro-<lb />
vide for any form of joint in-<lb />
tervention.<lb />
The agreement comes eight<lb />
months after U.S. Italian rela-<lb />
tions were strained when Italy<lb />
freed Mohammed Abu Abbas,<lb />
who is on trial for masterminding<lb />
the hijacking of the Achille<lb />
Lauro cruise ship.<lb />
The signing came at the end of<lb />
a two-day meeting of the Joint<lb />
Italian-American Working<lb />
Group to Combat Narcotics<lb />
Trafficking and Organized<lb />
Crime, which now will cover ter-<lb />
rorism as well.<lb />
FBI Director William Webster,<lb />
who accompanied Meese to the<lb />
meeting, will head a subgroup on<lb />
terrorism jointly with Antonio<lb />
Lattarulo, Scalfaro's chief of<lb />
Cabinet.<lb />
Meese told a news conference<lb />
in the Viminale Palace, which<lb />
houses the Interior Ministry, that<lb />
there is a clear link between nar-<lb />
cotics trafficking and terrorism.<lb />
"We have found instances<lb />
where terrorists have used nar-<lb />
cotics as a means of financing<lb />
their efforts and instances where<lb />
narcotics traffickers have used<lb />
terrorist tactics to protect their<lb />
activities from government in-<lb />
tervention The attorney<lb />
general said.<lb />
In answer to a question, both<lb />
Scalfaro and Meese said there is<lb />
concrete proof that Syria is in-<lb />
volved in international terrorism<lb />
but declined to give any details.<lb />
"Without doubt, magistrates<lb />
have taken concrete evidence that<lb />
one of the sources of terrorism is<lb />
also Syria Scalfaro said. He<lb />
said that at a meeting of Euro-<lb />
pean community interior<lb />
ministers in the Hague Britain<lb />
"indicated Syria is a definite<lb />
source of terrorism and the data<lb />
was confirmed on my last trip to<lb />
Egypt<lb />
Meese said the United States<lb />
has the same information.<lb />
The Italian-U.S. Committee<lb />
for the Fight Against Drugs and<lb />

Tuition Hike<lb />
Students Take Another Beating<lb />
Here we go again. Not a year<lb />
goes by without some one, in this<lb />
case Governor Jim Martin, propos-<lb />
ing a tuition increase for the UNC<lb />
system.<lb />
Last year, regardless of the fact<lb />
that out-of-state tuition for UNC<lb />
students was above the regional<lb />
average, the state legislature decid-<lb />
ed to raise tuition for out-of-state<lb />
students about 9 percent. This year<lb />
Martin proposes to increase in-state<lb />
tuition 3.2 percent and out-of-state<lb />
tuition an incredible 12.3 percent.<lb />
Think about it. That would in-<lb />
crease out-of-state tuition a total of<lb />
21.3 percent in only two years. If<lb />
this keeps up, we could see a signifi-<lb />
cant decline in out-of-state enroll-<lb />
ment in the future.<lb />
Granted, the increase isn't great<lb />
enough (about $200 per semester)<lb />
to initiate a mass exodus of out-of-<lb />
state students from the UNC<lb />
system, but if this becomes a trend,<lb />
it will make out-of-state students<lb />
think twice about coming to North<lb />
Carolina in the first place.<lb />
If these types of tuition increases<lb />
do have an effect on out-of-state<lb />
enrollment, it will be very unfor-<lb />
tunate. The blend of in-state and<lb />
out-of-state students has become a<lb />
very important part of our college<lb />
experience. It offers an education<lb />
that can't be found in any text<lb />
book.<lb />
What makes this tuition hike<lb />
especially intolerable is what they<lb />
plan to do with the money. Martin<lb />
proposes to take the revenue col-<lb />
lected from the increases and place<lb />
it in a General Fund. The state<lb />
legislature then decides where the<lb />
money will be spent. Put simply,<lb />
students will be expected to pay<lb />
more, but the odds are great that<lb />
they won't see a cent of it.<lb />
It sounds wonderful, doesn't it<lb />
Only if your name is Jim Martin.<lb />
Apparently, the man has forgotten<lb />
what it's like to be a student work-<lb />
ing his way through college.<lb />
Compounding the problem is the<lb />
Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Act,<lb />
which will reduce the amount of<lb />
financial aid available to students.<lb />
It's bad enough some students are<lb />
forced to find new resources to pay<lb />
for college; now Martin wants to up<lb />
the bill.<lb />
Naturally, this ill-conceived pro-<lb />
posal was designed to help the state<lb />
of North Carolina. How it's sup-<lb />
posed to accomplish that we don't<lb />
know. What it really does is hurt<lb />
the students. It seems we're getting<lb />
the short end of the stick once<lb />
again.<lb />
If there must be a tuition increase<lb />
we should raise in-statf and out-of-<lb />
state equally. It's only fair. Sure,<lb />
North Carolina residents pay state<lb />
tax. It's also true that many out-of-<lb />
state students tend to settle in North<lb />
Carolina after graduation. Also,<lb />
while they are here, if only tem-<lb />
porarily, they help fuel the state's<lb />
economy.<lb />
As for this General Fund<lb />
nonsense, it seems only right that if<lb />
there is to be an increase the money<lb />
it generates should go directly back<lb />
to the UNC system and ultimately<lb />
the students.<lb />
Governor Martin's proposed tui-<lb />
tion increase will hurt students<lb />
more than it will help. Perhaps if<lb />
the Governor dusted off his college<lb />
year book and looked back on the<lb />
good old days, he'd remember what<lb />
it was like to be a student and<lb />
understand.<lb />

the first of a three part series reviewing<lb />
the ABM Treaty j<lb />
The Soviet Union was suddenlv<lb />

we ought to just renew the ABM treatv<lb />
for maybe 10, 15, 20 soars. Defense<lb />
Secretary Caspar Weinberger's reac-<lb />

tion was: No; this is an ambush. Bui<lb />
other voices have been heard, urging us<lb />
to go ahead, and perhaps to use the<lb />
forward momentum to a all those new<lb />
missile systems.<lb />
The president, meanwhile, had of<lb />
course announced that he would no<lb />
longer feel bound by the terms o'<lb />
SALT II, and the reaction to this was<lb />
as expected from the disarmament lob-<lb />
by. But the feeling is tha' the events o(<lb />
1972 (SALT I and ABM) and 1979<lb />
(SALT II) are in flux. It is time to<lb />
review the ABM treaty, because the<lb />
context of what happened bears<lb />
critically on good judgment in the davs<lb />
ahead.<lb />
During the period between the<lb />
Soviets' first atomic bomb (1949) and<lb />
1972, the United States was concerned<lb />
with protecting itself from a nucleat<lb />
enemy fusillade. The system went<lb />
under the name of Safeguard, and con-<lb />
templated complex radat stations,<lb />
fighter planes and missiles. (iraduallv.<lb />
this evolved into what was called an<lb />
anti-ballistic missile program.<lb />
But by 1972, several factors came<lb />
together to persuade the Nixon ad-<lb />
ministration to move in a different<lb />
direction. One of these was the huge<lb />
expense of developing the Safeguard<lb />
program, given the technology of the<lb />
day.<lb />
The second factor was the Vietnam<lb />
War: Congress was being fractious<lb />
with respect to anything that had to do<lb />
with the military. Yet another was the<lb />
spirit of detente. Mr. Nixon had just<lb />
opened the door to China, and now he<lb />
was traveling to Moscow to sign a trea-<lb />
ts designed to cut drastically the inven-<lb />
tory ol nuclear weapons indeed, one<lb />

rhere as a rosy glow in<lb />
Washington-Moscow, and there were<lb />
those who believed that true strategic<lb />
disarmament was finally under was<lb />
Accordingly, Mr. Nixon signed not<lb />
only SAI I I. which spoke of limits in<lb />
the numbei of launchers, but also the<lb />
BM treaty, (as modified in<lb />
W4i limited to a single site the use of<lb />
no more than 100 interceptor missiles.<lb />

has in place 10,000 ail defense radars<lb />
and more than 1,200 interceptor ail<lb />

Greatei Moscow is heavily defended<lb />
by anti-ballistic missiles, civil defense is<lb />

one Defense Department official. No<lb />
ef ort was made to harden our ICBMs<lb />
or leadership facilities. We have no<lb />
SAMs, 118 strategic air defense warn-<lb />
ing radars, and a mere 300 aircraft<lb />
assigned to defensive purposes.<lb />
What had begun as a common com<lb />
mitmenl to mutual assured vulnerabili-<lb />
ty had evolved into a Soviet Union not<lb />
by any means vet impregnable, but<lb />
headed in that direction at great speed,<lb />
while in the United States we were lying<lb />
on the beach, naked as a newh<lb />

then, in Julv of 1983, our<lb />
revealed what was happening a'<lb />
Krasnovarsk, in Siberia. There<lb />
Sovi m has built a phased arraj<lb />

Israeli Betrayal Of America Shakes Relations<lb />
The Ne" Republic<lb />
Prime Minister Shimon Peres is probably right in<lb />
charging that some highly placed individuals in the<lb />
U.S. government (and in the media, too, by the<lb />
way) want to use the espionage of Jonathan Jay<lb />
Pollard to "foul the atmosphere" of unprecedented<lb />
cooperation that now exists between Israel and<lb />
America.<lb />
There are always such people, including many<lb />
who are usually indifferent to security breaches.<lb />
What animates them on this occasion is not hard to<lb />
figure out. But it would be dangerously self-<lb />
deluding for Peres to think that only malice<lb />
motivates the skepticism that has greeted his<lb />
government's denials that there is more to Israeli<lb />
spying against the U.S. than this one unauthorized<lb />
instance.<lb />
The Israelis insist that Pollard's activities were a<lb />
unique and "rogue" operation, unacceptable to the<lb />
authorities. What makes this hard to believe is the<lb />
way two of the four Israelis implicated in the<lb />
Pollard case were treated when they returned to<lb />
Jerusalem.<lb />
Colonel Aviam Sella, a rising star of the air force,<lb />
has been promoted to brigadier general and ap-<lb />
pointed commander of a major air base.<lb />
Rafael Eitan, a veteran of Israel's highly touted<lb />
secret service, has been appointed chairman of<lb />
Israel Chemicals, a lucrative position at the head of<lb />
one of the country's most important state enter-<lb />
prises.<lb />
This is hardly punishment, especially for<lb />
something as serious as violating the implicit terms<lb />
of trust that should govern the relations between<lb />
Israel and its only reliable benefactor and supporter<lb />
among the nations of the world.<lb />
The United States deserves more from its ally<lb />
than the disrespect for our sensibilities and our in-<lb />
terests expressed in the Israeli government's unwill-<lb />
ingness to make people pay for their misdeeds.<lb />
There are always extenuating personal cir-<lb />
cumstances. Eitan is one of the unsung heroes of<lb />
Israel's long netherworld war against its<lb />
ungentlemanly enemies; he was among those who<lb />
apprehended Eichmann. Such a career, the Israelis<lb />
will say, should not be undone by one overzealous<lb />
act if it was just one overzealous act.<lb />
Sella is a brilliant military officer in a country in-<lb />
ordinately dependent, alas, on its brilliant officers.<lb />
The cost of retiring him would be enormous. Maybe<lb />
these considerations explain the almost indiscer-<lb />
nibly slight rebuke administered to the two of-<lb />
ficials.<lb />
But the suspicion lingers that there were other<lb />
factors, including the possibility that the com-<lb />
promised principals held the government hostage to<lb />
their knowledge of other acts of espionage against<lb />
the United States.<lb />
This conjecture is no mean-spirited fantasy. Only<lb />
last month, in the case of two Palestinian terrorists<lb />
who died after being captured during the hijacking<lb />
of a bus, the Peres Cabinet was inhibited by just<lb />
this sort of blackmail from allowing its attorney<lb />
general to pursue acts of perjury allegedly commit-<lb />
ted by another security agency.<lb />
Such damage-control rather, such blackmail<lb />
is especially effective if higher-ups were actually<lb />
what we used to call "witty" that is, if they ac-<lb />
tually knew of the operations about whose very ex-<lb />
istence they now feign surprise.<lb />
There is, then, something a bit too worldly-wise,<lb />
too smart-alecky and wanton, in Jerusalem's of-<lb />
ficial reactions to these two cases, and also in the<lb />
case of still another Israeli general implicated in an<lb />
illegal scheme to funnel American weapons to Iran.<lb />
Such callousness about law and lawlessness,<lb />
trustworthiness and treachery, may be endemic<lb />
even to democracies habituated to living under<lb />
siege. But that should comfort neither Israel nor its<lb />
friends.<lb />
The Pollard case was not even admirable in a<lb />
technical sense. The spy was a loose-lipped braggart<lb />
who would be trusted only by people who think<lb />
themselves too smart or too favored by fate to be<lb />
found out.<lb />
It is particularly disheartening that the erosion of<lb />
official ethics in Israel should come on the Labor<lb />
Party's watch, although Labor is hardly a free<lb />
agent in the present power-sharing arrangement.<lb />
The imminent return of Yitzhak Shamir of the con-<lb />
servative Likud Party to the prime ministry augurs<lb />
even worse for these standards.<lb />
Shamir and some of his Likud colleagues are men<lb />
without the scruples demanded of democratic<lb />
leadership. Many of them are thugs. This, they may<lb />
think, prepares them well for living in the Arab<lb />
Middle East. But it does not equip them for the<lb />
deeper kind of alliance with the United States, to<lb />
which Israelis aspire and which, at their best, they<lb />
richly deserve.<lb />
Even in imperfect circumstances, lsiael is a<lb />
valuable strategic asset of the United States. Both<lb />
its state of military preparedness and its proven<lb />
political commitments make Israel in any im-<lb />
aginable contingency a more certain ally than any<lb />
I<lb />
NATO country even Margaret Thatcher's United<lb />
Kingdom. Moreover, the valuable information we<lb />
get from Israeli intelligence is not rivaled by the<lb />
fruits of any other intelligence-sharing relationship.<lb />
V hat the Israelis apparently were after in the<lb />
Pollard case was not material on our arms or arms<lb />
control positions vis-a-vis Russia or China. Thev<lb />
were after information we possessed that might be<lb />
critically relevant to Israel's security, such as the<lb />
quantity and quality of Soviet weapons deployed in<lb />
the Arab confrontation states.<lb />
But much of this we provide anyway, and<lb />
everybody knows it. Still, one reason that neither<lb />
the State Department nor the Pentagon was eager to<lb />
see a Pollard trial was their reluctance to<lb />
demonstrate in open court just how much of what<lb />
we know about the Arabs is also now known by the<lb />
Israelis.<lb />
Of course, we also probably spy on the Israelis.<lb />
This raises the question as to why they're not entid-<lb />
ed to do in the U.S. what we presumably do in<lb />
Israel. The answer is that the relationship is in no<lb />
way symmetrical.<lb />
Our ties to Israel are based on conviction and<lb />
preference. Israel's ties to us are based on necessity<lb />
rooted philosophical and political affinities not-<lb />
withstanding, in their objective, desperate needs.<lb />
The U.S. has been more than understanding and<lb />
more than supportive of these needs and of Israel's<lb />
own definition of them. This American support<lb />
creates certain prerogatives for the U.S. It also<lb />
creates certain obligations for Israel, and one of<lb />
these is that it behave with scrupulous honor and<lb />
honesty to its friend.<lb />

if the president would use the oc-<lb />

O'Neill said he offered an op-<lb />
portunity for Reagan to appear<lb />
before a joint session today,<lb />
"just as I have done upon every<lb />
such presidential request<lb />
"My offer for a joint session<lb />
remains open he said. "On<lb />
Wednesday, the House votes on<lb />
contra aid for the third time this<lb />
year. If the House passes contra<lb />
aid in any form, the Senate will<lb />
have to act on the matter. Since<lb />
future congressional action must<lb />
occui in both houses, 1 believe<lb />
that the proper forum for an ad-<lb />
dress is the traditional joint ses-<lb />

Asked why Reagan would not<lb />
accept O'Neill's offer to have the<lb />
president appeal before both<lb />
houses of Congress at the same<lb />
time, Speakes said: "The Senate<lb />
is occupied with the tax bill. The<lb />
House o Representatives is<lb />
working on it (the contra aid<lb />
plan), and that's who we want to<lb />
speak to<lb />
He said Reagan would send his<lb />
speech to Capitol Hill today in<lb />
the form of a written message.<lb />
"The president is deeply disap-<lb />
pointed Speakes said, adding<lb />
that he "would have sought to<lb />
outline the historical trends in<lb />
our hemisphere today, which are<lb />
directed toward democratization<lb />
and he would have discussed the<lb />
exceptions to this trend by such<lb />
countries as Nicaragua. His pur-<lb />
pose was to also outline what<lb />
type of negotiated settlement the<lb />
United States can support in Cen-<lb />
tral America "<lb />
White House and congres-<lb />
sional aides agreed Monday that<lb />
Reagan still lacks the votes to get<lb />
the aid program approved.<lb />
Speakes called it "ver close"<lb />
but acknowledged, "We're not<lb />
there yet<lb />
Two well informed congres-<lb />
sional aides, who aked not to be<lb />
identified, predicted the House<lb />
would approve an alternative<lb />
proposal by Rep. Dave McCur-<lb />
dy, D-Okla, to give $30 million in<lb />
so-called humanitarian aid now<lb />
and require a second vote after<lb />
Oct. 1 on Reagan's request for<lb />
$70 million in military aid. The<lb />
administration opposes any re-<lb />
quirement for a second vote,<lb />
which McCurdy says would allow<lb />
more time for peace talks in the<lb />
region.<lb />
Presidential addresses to a<lb />
single house of the Congress are<lb />
extremely rare. Of seven cases<lb />
cited by the White House, six<lb />
were before the Senate, and halt<lb />
those involved treaties, which on-<lb />
ly the Senate acts upon.<lb />
A survey of presidential ap-<lb />
pearances before Congress by<lb />
Congressional Quarterly shows<lb />
George Washington delivered his<lb />
Second Inaugural before the<lb />
Senate only. Woodrow Wilson<lb />
made his World War I "Peace<lb />
Without Victory" address to the<lb />
Senate, asked that body to ratify<lb />
the Women'sSuffrage Amend-<lb />
ment and appealed to the Senate<lb />
for ratification of the Versailles<lb />
Treaty. Harry S. Truman ad-<lb />
dressed the Senate upon submis-<lb />
sion of the United Nations<lb />
Charter. Richard Nixon made<lb />
separate addresses to the House<lb />
and Senate on the Vietnam war in<lb />
1969.<lb />
O'Neill's rejection is the latest<lb />
in a series of frustrations Reagan<lb />
has been dealt on the contra aid<lb />
issue. Reagan accused O'Neill of<lb />
unfair treatment when the<lb />
speaker refused in the spring to<lb />
permit a single up-or-down vote<lb />
on the aid issue, tying it instead<lb />
to a supplemental appropriations<lb />
measure that Reagan had promis-<lb />
ed to veto.<lb />
The administration fought for<lb />
another chance, and finally suc-<lb />
ceeded in getting a vote scheduled<lb />
for Wednesdav.<lb />

Depression is a mood distur-<lb />

Ladies in Retirement is a<lb />
comedy- suspense-thriller about a<lb />
housekeeper who murders her<lb />
employer in order to find a home<lb />
for her lovable, eccentric sisters.<lb />
Written with a good deal of<lb />
English wit and humor by Ed-<lb />
ward Percy and Reginald<lb />
Denham, the play opened in New<lb />
York in 1940 and was hailed by<lb />
t he critics as the hit of the season.<lb />
It is based on the facts of a<lb />
famous French crime of the<lb />
1880's, shoring up the bare facts<lb />
with a stagefull of unforgettable<lb />
characters and suspense and bus-<lb />
tle dresses from the 1880's. The<lb />
play is not a "who-dunnit"<lb />
because the identity of the<lb />
murderer is apparent even before<lb />
the crime is committed, but with<lb />
a delightful blend of horror and<lb />
humor it does investigate the<lb />
"why" of the crime.<lb />
Tickets for Ladies in Retire-<lb />

Macchio And Morita Return<lb />
For Ultimate Confrontation<lb />
Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita star in 'Karate Kid Part II now playing In Greenville.<lb />
ByEDTOSHACH<lb />
Hot on the heels of Poltergeist<lb />
II, The Karate Kid Part II is here<lb />
both to entertain us and to re-<lb />
mind us that for every hit movie,<lb />
a sequel awaits.<lb />
The Karate Kid Part II takes<lb />
up where the original ended <lb />
with Daniel (Ralph Macchio)<lb />
showering after his tournament<lb />
victory. It's a good thing, too,<lb />
because this allows for something<lb />
some of us have been waiting two<lb />
years for: a parking lot confron-<lb />
tation between Daniel's mentor<lb />
S Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita)<lb />
and the teacher of Daniel's<lb />
tormenters. Without giving away<lb />
too much it was worth the<lb />
wait.<lb />
Soon, Miyagi receives word of<lb />
this father's poor health and goes<lb />
home to Okinawa to settle af-<lb />
fairs. Daniel, wanting to help<lb />
Miyagi through a difficult time,<lb />
accompanys him.<lb />
Miyagi's arrival in Okinawa re-<lb />
ignites an old dispute with his<lb />
formr best friend, and he soon<lb />
finds himself challenged to a<lb />
fight to the death. Daniel, mean-<lb />
while is persecuted by the most<lb />
proficient student of Miyagi's<lb />
rival, and the stage is set for an<lb />
ultimate confrontation.<lb />
Unlike many sequels, there's a<lb />
lot of good that can be said about<lb />
The Karate Kid Part II.<lb />
Just as in the original,<lb />
Noriyuki "Pat" Morita is ex-<lb />
cellent as Miyagi. In this role,<lb />
Morita is sometimes profound<lb />
and sometimes comical, jux-<lb />
taposing the traditional aspects<lb />
of Miyagi's heritage and his ex-<lb />
posure to American culture to in-<lb />
fuse Miyagi with just the right<lb />
comic touch. For his perfor-<lb />
mance in The Karate Kid, Morita<lb />
was nominated for an Academy<lb />
Award, and in this sequel, he is<lb />
equally memorable.<lb />
Ralph Macchio also has done a<lb />
good job breathing new life into<lb />
the role of Daniel, and the<lb />
chemistry between he and Morita<lb />
has lost nothing.<lb />
Another plus for this movie is<lb />
the believability of the fight<lb />
scenes. Sound effects, although<lb />
enhanced somewhat, are not<lb />
overwhelming. When people are<lb />
hurt in Karate Kid II, they cry out<lb /><lb />
much as people in actual fights<lb />
do. Also, director John G.<lb />
Avildscn resisted the urge to<lb />
make the movie one long fight<lb />
scene and instead, with writer<lb />
Robert Mark Kamen, has made a<lb />
movie about honor and courage.<lb />
Despite its favorable points.<lb />
The Karate Kid Part II does have<lb />
a few problems. Throughout the<lb />
movie, actors who obviously<lb />
speak English quite well attempt<lb />
to deliver lines with the same<lb />
characteristic broken English that<lb />
Miyagi speaks. Although Morita<lb />
pulls off these lines quite well,<lb />
several of the other actors do not,<lb />
and they sound affected.<lb />
Another slight drawback to the<lb />
film is its length. Although the<lb />
climax requires some setting up,<lb />
the movie sometimes drifts<lb />
dangerously near overkill.<lb />
Ponderous would be too strong a<lb />
word, but it can surely be said<lb />
that a judicious cut here and<lb />
there wouldn't hurt a bit.<lb />
That said, however, Tht<lb />
Karate Kid Part II is ultimately<lb />
an enjoyable film. The<lb />
photography is often beautiful,<lb />
and the treatment of Okinawan<lb />
tradition is interesting without<lb />
being ethnocentric. And the final<lb />

People who know Batman only<lb />
through the old TV show will be<lb />
surprised by Miller's Dark<lb />
Knight. While the TV series was<lb />
campy and often ludicrous, Bat-<lb />
man: The Dark Knight is nothing<lb />
if not serious. Miller's Batman of<lb />
the future is somber, obsessive,<lb />
and sometimes downright mean.<lb />
Instead of kooky old villians like<lb />
the Penguin, he now fights<lb />
abominable young murderers<lb />
with razor-sharp batterangs and a<lb />
high-tech tank-like vehicle that<lb />
Robin once called the Batmobile<lb />
Robin, by the way, is long dead<lb />
in this future story, and the new<lb />
Robin is a girl.<lb />

GENEVA! UP!) Jorge Luis<lb />

Bias Death Mishandled Hardy speaks out<lb />
By Nation's Media<lb />
What happened last Tiursdaj on the University of Maryland cam-<lb />
pus was purely tragic. However, what may be even more tragic is the<lb />
way the that the media has pounced on the drug issue surrounding Len<lb />
Bias' death.<lb />
Although cocaine intoxication has been named as the cause of<lb />
death, prior to yesterday there was no proof of the cause of death <lb />
only speculation. Prince George Count) state attorney Arthur Mar-<lb />
shall admitted thai he didn't know what caused Bias' untimely death<lb />
and didn't know il cocaine was a contributing factor.<lb />
If this was the case, then why did the media stand so sternly to the<lb />
belief that drug use caused this death? Tins type of hypothetical jour-<lb />
nalism is usually confined to the grocery-store tabloids like The Na-<lb />
tional Enquirer.<lb />
The loss of a talent as greal as Bias is bad enough, why try to<lb />
damage the memories And the reputation of an already grieving family<lb />
and friends b printing innuendos that had no basis in fact.<lb />
Due to the circumstances surrounding the death, players and friends<lb />
are now being dragged into the affair. Marshall has said that he will<lb />
ask Maryland basketball coacl Charles "Lefty" Driesell, several<lb />
basketball plavers and other students and friends of Bias to answer<lb />
questions from a grand iur about drug sales on the school's campus.<lb />
Does it take a death of a talented athlete to get authorities concern-<lb />
ed about drug use' V e prefei to remember Bias where he was most at<lb />
home on the basketball court. Furthermore, to those who knew<lb />
him well, he was a respectable individual off the court as well.<lb />
A person of Bias' immense talents comes along once in a lifetime.<lb />
The sad thing is that his life was cut short and no matter what the<lb />
cause. Bias deserves more respect than to be scandalized by the<lb />
nation's media.<lb />
Tests performed before the NBA drat: (b the Celtics and Golden<lb />
State) showed no trace of any drug use. Bias was onl 22 years old and<lb />
made a fatal mistake. Rather than the media trying to harp on the<lb />
matter, it should be used to inform societ) on the hazards of drug use<lb />
rather than to ostracize a wronj<lb />
After all, we all make mistakes. Maybe we should learn from Len<lb />
Bias' apparent moment ol weakness.<lb />

Jackson Picks Baseball<lb />
On a more positive note, Heisman trophy winner Bo Jackson turn-<lb />
ed some heads as he decided to play professional baseball instead of<lb />
pro football.<lb />
The Auburn tailback who was drafted as the top pick in the NFL by<lb />
Tampa Bay signed with the Kansas City Royals.<lb />
Jackson would have reportedly earned over one million a year with<lb />
Tampa, but 'went with his heart' in choosing to play major league<lb />
baseball.<lb />
Jackson is the first top-draft since 1979 to shun the NFL when Ohio<lb />
State's Tom Cousineau jumped to the Canadian Football League.<lb />
Jackson is also the fourth consecutive Heisman winner to split from<lb />
the NFL. Mike Rozier in '83, Herschel Walker in '84 and Doug Flutie<lb />
in '85 all went to the L'SFL.<lb />
However, although Jackson was offered bundles to play pro foot-<lb />
ball, he opted to be where he felt comfortable and would be happiest.<lb />
In turn, he followed his emotions, not his wallet.<lb />
On the subject of baseball, we see quite a turn as their seems to be a<lb />
different balance of power.<lb />
In the National League West, for instance, the once hapless San<lb />
Francisco Giants are in first place while in the American League West,<lb />
perennial patsy Texas is in front of California and last year's cham-<lb />
pion K.C. Royals.<lb />
The surprisingly powerful Boston Red Sox lead the American<lb />
League East as the ever-present N.Y. Mets rule the Big Apple as weli<lb />
as all of baseball.<lb />
The key to the Mets success has been starting pitching as Ron Darl-<lb />
ing, Bob Ojeda, Sid Fernandez and Dwight Goode" all have won eight<lb />
games.<lb />
However, that's not the surprise!<lb />
The biggest surprise is the fact that St. Louis, the defending Na-<lb />
tional League champion, is near the bottom of the division and play-<lb />
ing below .500 baseball.<lb />
To show how much the balance of power has changed, on the mdrn-<lb />
ing of Friday the 13th to make matters worse, the four last-place<lb />
managers were Sparky Anderson, Dick Williams, Pete Rose and<lb />
Whitey Herzog who have 18 World Series rings between them.<lb />
Former Teammate Remembers Bias<lb />
By JANET SIMPSON<lb />
iporti Writer<lb />
People like him don't come<lb />
along very often. He was to<lb />
Maryland fans what Michael<lb />
Jordan was to Carolina<lb />
followers, totally captivating<lb />
on the court, and charming<lb />
when off.<lb />
"I just couldn't believe it<lb />
said Scott Hardy about Len<lb />
Bias' death. "I'm still hurt, I<lb />
really am<lb />
Hardy and Bias were team-<lb />
mates in high school. They at-<lb />
tended Northwestern High<lb />
School in Hyattsville, Md<lb />
and were very good friends.<lb />
"We played together in high<lb />
school stated Hardy. "We<lb />
were close and we kept in<lb />
touch<lb />
Bias was able to dazzle peo-<lb />
ple no matter where he went.<lb />
Everyone who knew him, or<lb />
just knew of him was caught<lb />
up in his invisible yet magical<lb />
spell. "Len could affect peo-<lb />
ple who didn't even know<lb />
him commented Hardy.<lb />
"Keith Sledge had never even<lb />
met the guy. but when he told<lb />
me about his death, he had<lb />
tears in his eyes. That was just<lb />
the affect he had on people<lb />
His sophomore season at<lb />
Maryland was the year Hardy<lb />
felt Bias came into his own.<lb />
"His sophomore year he really<lb />
showed signs of brilliance<lb />
remembers Hardy. "He show-<lb />
ed me and everybody else mat<lb />
this kid was going to be a<lb />
player. He showed the people<lb />
in this nation that Len Bias<lb />
was ready to step forward and<lb />
accept 'superstar' status.<lb />
"He did (gain 'superstar<lb />
status') because his junior year<lb />
he came back loaded with con-<lb />
fidence Hardy added, "and<lb />
his junior and senior years just<lb />
speak for themselves<lb />
Speak they do. Not only did<lb />
Bias play very well, he also<lb />
had conference player-of-the-<lb />
year honors bestowed on him<lb />
twice. For two seasons he just<lb />
seemed to dominate the<lb />
league<lb />
"He dominated the ACC<lb />
stated Hardy. "In fact he was<lb />
the AC C. Bias did things his<lb />
senior sear that even surprised<lb />
it. However, when they went<lb />
to college it showed who was<lb />
the better player<lb />
Another ECU basketball<lb />
player Gus Hill, who played<lb />
against Bias in high school,<lb />
seemed really impressed by<lb />
him. "I really didn't know<lb />
him too well as a person Hill<lb />
said.<lb />
"The one time I played<lb />
against him I was a freshman<lb />
in high school. He was very<lb />
impressive as a basketball<lb />
player, and he definitely seem-<lb />
ed like a good person Hill<lb />
added. "Bias, with all that<lb />
"Everybody who knows himknows Len Bias<lb />
was a decent young man It would be a shame for<lb />
all the accomplishments he made in his life to just<lb />
be played down by the media if there was a drug<lb />
involvement<lb />
Scott Hardy<lb />
me.<lb />
During his senior season in<lb />
high school. Bias was over-<lb />
shadowed by some other big-<lb />
ger named players; however,<lb />
when he pulled that Maryland<lb />
jerses over his head, all those<lb />
shadows disappeared.<lb />
"His senior year he was<lb />
recruited by everybod. Vet he<lb />
still didn't get the recognition I<lb />
think he deserved com-<lb />
mented Hardy. "That year,<lb />
1982, everybody was talking<lb />
about Billy Thompson. Bias<lb />
deserved just as much respect<lb />
as Thompson but he didn't get<lb />
world of talent didn't show<lb />
off, he just played<lb />
Hardy may have been one<lb />
of Bias' hardest critics even<lb />
though it may not have seemed<lb />
that way. "People used to<lb />
always kid me that they<lb />
thought 1 gae Bias too much<lb />
credit stated Hard "Reallv<lb />
though, 1 never gave Bias<lb />
enough credit. I didn't give<lb />
him enough credit. 1 was<lb />
harder on Bias than anvbodv<lb />
else was because he was mv<lb />
friend and because we plaved<lb />
high school basketball<lb />
together<lb />
The implication of drugs in<lb />
relation to Bias' death -s one<lb />
subject that really is of interest<lb />
to Hardy. "Everybody who<lb />
knows him, or has ever seen<lb />
him play on television knows<lb />
Len Bias was a decent young<lb />
man commented Hardv. "If<lb />
he was involved with drugs in<lb />
any way, 1 never knew<lb />
anything about il. 1 just won't<lb />
believe it until the reports<lb />
come out and say it was the<lb />
cause of him dying then<lb />
that's just something I'll have<lb />
to accept. However, right<lb />
now, off rumor and hearsay, I<lb />
can't accept it.<lb />
"Bias just had too much ,<lb />
ing for him to risk it all on<lb />
drugs continued Hardy. "It<lb />
would be a shame tor all the<lb />
accomplishments that he has<lb />
made in his life to just be<lb />
played down by the media if<lb />
there was a drug<lb />
involvement<lb />
Keith Sledge also thought<lb />
highly of Bias "To me Len<lb />

Will Baseballers Continue Success ?<lb />
B TONY BROWN<lb />
"! Writer<lb />
Although Arizona won the<lb />
College World Series just a few<lb />
weeks ago. and professional<lb />
baseball is still in its early stages<lb />
of the season, ECU baseball<lb />
displayed a fine year, and one<lb />
that may be hard to repeat.<lb />
The baseball Pirates are going<lb />
to have a tough time in the '87<lb />
season maintaining the pace of<lb />
the past three years in that sport.<lb />
The torrid 106-3 mark notched<lb />
up over that period was largely<lb />
achieved due to the efforts of six<lb />
players who finished their col-<lb />
legiate careers this past 40-10<lb />
year.<lb />
Three of those departing<lb />
seniors were the number two<lb />
through four batters this past<lb />
season and each hit for better<lb />
than a .310 average. All together,<lb />
the six collected 43 of the team's<lb />
60 homers in '86, along with over<lb />
half the doubles ECU hit.<lb />
Their efforts spurred a large<lb />
number of all-time single season<lb />
records for the Pirates, both as a<lb />
team and individually. Those in-<lb />
clude runs (361, was 331), hits<lb />
(475, 462), RBIs (314, 384),<lb />
doubles (96, 83), homers (60, 53)<lb />
and total bases (760, 710).<lb />
One team record ECU would<lb />
rather forget was a new record<lb />
for number of errors, the second<lb />
consecutive year mistakes cost<lb />
them dearly in post-season play.<lb />
The biggest loss for ECU, ob-<lb />
viously is Winfred Johnson, a<lb />
pitcherfirst basemandesignated<lb />
hitter who has led the Pirates in<lb />
many hitting statistics since his<lb />
arrival in 1983. He has set virtual-<lb />
ly every offensive individual<lb />
record for both career and single<lb />
season hitting and was recently<lb />
named first team All-America.<lb />
The most noted of Johnson's<lb />
stats is the one for homers. He set<lb />
a season record in '84 with 18,<lb />
bettered that to 22 last year, put-<lb />
ting him in first, second and<lb />
third-place all time.<lb />
The powerful Johnson had<lb />
already established a new career<lb />
mark in homeruns in '85 with 51.<lb />
His perfomrance this year raised<lb />
that record to 70, with the<lb />
time spot behind Johnson's .432<lb />
mark the same year.<lb />
Hardison's strong point was<lb />
hitting doubles, collecting 43 in<lb />
three years of play. He trails only<lb />
Johnson again, but the latter had<lb />
tour years to do it in.<lb />
Third base will be another hole<lb />
to till as Mark Cockrell will be<lb />
gone He knocked in 31 runs and<lb />
got 33 hits in '86. including five<lb />
roundtnppers.<lb />
Other losses to graduation are<lb />
leftfielder Mont Carter and utili-<lb />
ty infielder Robert Langston.<lb />
Playing in 36 games Carter got 23<lb />
hits while walking 25 times, the<lb />
only Pirate to reach base via<lb />
walks more than hits.<lb />
Langston has been a steady<lb />
defensive stalwart in the infield<lb />
during his career. Last year he<lb />
stepped in for an injured Steve<lb />
Sides to cover second ba.se iie en-<lb />
tire season. His ability th the<lb />
glove will be sorely missed next<lb />
year as E I attempts to cut<lb />
down on the large number ol er-<lb />
rors of the past two seasons.<lb />
With such talent only a recent<lb />
memory, it seems ECU will be<lb />
hard-pressed to match the 40-10<lb />
vear amassed this year. It remains<lb />
to be seen if the '8' version can<lb />
continue to dominate the con-<lb />
ference as the Pirates have in the<lb />
pas! few years<lb />
On the bright side, the perfor-<lb />
mance of freshman Jake Jacobs<lb />
on the mound proved to be a<lb />
pleasant relief this year. He<lb />
See PETERSON. Page 9<lb />
Winfred Johnson<lb />
second-place record of Butch<lb />
Davis only 26.<lb />
Other single-season marks set<lb />
by Johnson include: most hits<lb />
(1st and 3rd), total bases (1,2,3),<lb />
walks3rd), doubles, (1). RBIs<lb />
(1,2,3), batting average 97 AB<lb />
(1,3) and slugging percentage<lb />
(1,2).<lb />
Career highs by him include:<lb />
hits (234), total bases (493), runs<lb />
(148), doubles (47) and RBIs<lb />
(221).<lb />
The loss of Johnson's bat is<lb />
not the only aspect of the Pirates'<lb />
game to suffer with his depar-<lb />
ture, however. He also proved to<lb />
be a strong performer on the<lb />
mound, winding up with a career-<lb />
record 35 wins. While not often<lb />
totally over powering his op-<lb />
ponents, he usually got the job<lb />
done.<lb />
The departure of centerfielder<lb />
Chris Bradberry (.333) and short-<lb />
stop Greg Hardison (.311) will be<lb />
hard to overcome as well.<lb />
Bradberry joined the team as a<lb />
walk-on in '84, then became a<lb />
starter part-time that same year<lb />
and went on to an excellent career<lb />
at ECU. His .405 average in '85<lb />
was good for the number two all-<lb />

Hopefully, Daniel Boone will<lb />
be able to overcome an arm in-<lb />
jury which put him out of action<lb />
almost the entire season. The ris-<lb />
ing senior six-footer posted a 5-1<lb />
mark in '85 and had been ex-<lb />
pected to be number two man on<lb />
the staff this year.<lb />
With so many positions to fill,<lb />
it will be harder than usual to<lb />
predict the line-up for next year,<lb />
but we'll give it a try<lb />
The coaches are on the<lb />
recruiting trail in Greensboro, so<lb />
the following prognostications<lb />
are straight from the mind of this<lb />
writer, using two years of cover-<lb />
ing the team as an excuse for any<lb />
foul-ups, bleeps or blunders.<lb />
I irst base is set with an ex-<lb />
perienced senior, Mike Sullivan.<lb />
He anchored that position while<lb />
lohnson was pitching and also<lb />
served as a designated hitter. His<lb />
314 average will likely make him<lb />
the clean-up hitter or the number<lb />
three man.<lb />
Sieve Sides returns ai second,<lb />
but he will need to cut down on<lb />
mistakes, having committed 25<lb />
s in '86. His 341 batting<lb />
average might move him to a<lb />
number two oi so batting spot<lb />
He tied tor second among<lb />
returners tor game-winning RBls<lb />
with tour.<lb />
At catcher, veteran Jim Riley,<lb />
another rising senior will be back<lb />
and will be expected to continue<lb />
his solid playing. Hatting .253, he<lb />
McCrady<lb />
Named<lb />
ICl junior Idward "Bern"<lb />
McCrady has recently been<lb />
selected to the NC'AS rowing<lb />
earn which will take place later<lb />
this month in Raleigh.<lb />
McCrady, who hails from<lb />
Greensboro, is a political science<lb />
majot who has been spending his<lb />
summer in Greenville while atten-<lb />
ding school. He hopes to possibiv<lb />
make the Olympic squad one<lb />
lay, but limits his hopes to the<lb />
'sheer enjoyment of the sport<lb />
played in every game in '86, but a<lb />
strong number two man will still<lb />
somewhat of a question mark.<lb />
Junior Jay McGraw will be an-<lb />
choring right field as usual, with<lb />
some stints as a relief catcher still<lb />
possible, though hopefully one of<lb />
the back-up catchers will progress<lb />
enough to not make that<lb />
necessary.<lb />
His 10 homers tied for second<lb />
this year and is first among<lb />
players returning. He tied for se-<lb />
cond with Sullivan in RBls,<lb />
knocking in 36 runs this year.<lb />
David Ritchie (.277) will pro-<lb />
bably take left field. His perfor-<lb />
mance as a freshman during the<lb />
early season led to a number of<lb />
games as a starter. He will likely<lb />
continue leading off on offense<lb />
since he had a good on-base<lb />
percentage with 26 hits and 19<lb />
walks.<lb />
Centerfield will be a true<lb />
unknown, since Chris Bradberry<lb />
has played virtually every inning<lb />
theie for years.<lb />
Senior Dean Fhehalt is the only<lb />
other player currently listed as an<lb />
outfielder, so presumbablv he<lb />
will move there, although the<lb />
outfield may be juggled to put a<lb />
more seasoned player there.<lb />
F.hehalt led the team with a .412<lb />
average, but j)layed in just 15<lb />
games and batted<lb />
only 17 times<lb />
Third base and shortstop ari<lb />
real question marks, as the only<lb />
returning player who had a<lb />
batting average 4X.)) I tt a<lb />
peared in only seven games, witl<lb />
five at-bats.<lb />
It seems likely that a new<lb />
should have a good si neol<lb />
these spots, barring the possibili<lb />
ty of a current player switi<lb />
positions.<lb />
At this time the list oi reel<lb />
signed for the '87 season ha<lb />
been released, so it is i<lb />
known what new players ma-<lb />
become starters or get a<lb />
playing time.<lb />
The prospects of possiblv<lb />
ting should be a tantalizing lute<lb />
for head coach Ciaiv Ovei<lb />
